t took a little while, but Ice Cube started balling at a young age, because the older kids telling him he couldn’t do it gave him the challenge that he needed. “It made me want to play that much more,” Cube told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay during an interview this week.

Now, 48 years later, Cube is five years into running the BIG3 Basketball League that he co-founded in 2017. Since then, the league has become a magnet for NBA players looking for new challenges, and the premier place for fans to watch three-on-three basketball.

This Sunday, Aug. 14, Cube’s league brings its playoffs to Tampa for the first time, where the top four teams will battle it out for a chance to make it to the championship in Atlanta.

Housing remains the biggest concern for residents Live polls were broadcast on the slideshow as word clouds during the last four meetings. Over and over, the words “public housing,” “city-owned housing,” “mixed-income,” and “social housing” appeared on the screen.

That housing needs to be attainable for working locals. City leadership has talked a lot about workforce housing for the project. But most people don’t make enough to afford those rates. Workforce housing rates in Pinellas are roughly 80% AMI to 120% AMI or $46,000 for a single person up to $69,000. “I feel like they’re not actually looking for feedback. They just want to appear like they are,” Karla Correa with the St. Pete Tenants Union told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. “But despite that, people are still coming out in huge numbers to demand public housing.”

It’s going to be mixed-use “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for impactful and inclusive progress,” Welch said last Thursday. “But this is not a stadium project.

It’s a community redevelopment project. But a stadium does remain at the heart of the project.

The city’s economic director, Gary Jones, presented on Chicago’s Wrigley Field, San Diego’s Petco Park, San Francisco’s Oracle Stadium, and Washington D.C.’s Nationals Park. Those sites were chosen specifically because of the focus on “mixed-use,” combining a stadium with housing,

Booker Creek waterfront In the 1970s, the I-175 development effectively cut off the Gas Plant district from Campbell Park, where Booker Creek flows. Booker Creek runs three miles along the south side from west of I-275 to the southernmost edge of USF St.Pete, under Central Avenue, along Tropicana Field, and south to Campbell Park and Roser Park. The space has a long history of broken promises, which Mayor Ken Welch is trying to amend.

He remembers those broken promises, having grown up in the area before interstate I-175 bulldozed many Black homes and businesses.

That was the focus during the last of four community conversations on the future of the Gas Plant District Redevelopment.

The talks came after Welch scrapped the Tropicana redevelopment RFP back in June, gathering feedback for a new RFP to launch in August. Welch estimated that the talks had reached close to a thousand residents overall.

The discussion was divided into three parts: live, work, and play, including breakout discussions. Feedback will be shared with city leadership. The city is slated to choose a new developer for the site by the end of this year.

Continuing to grow, public spaces for the arts in the city seemed to have a lot of support from residents. “We have the opportunity of a lifetime to build our Grand Ole Opry of the 21st century,” Dr. Alex Harris, co-founder of the Arts Conservatory for Teens, said at the meeting.

Youth services Apprenticeships for local youth and access to youth services at the new site are likely. “I spoke to people at my table about public daycares, with childcare you don’t have to pay for,” Correa of the St. Pete Tenants Union told CL. “Just more public spaces for young people in general, and keeping it for the actual benefit of people who live here and not just the money grab.”

Public Transit It wouldn’t be mixed-use without public transit, and the Gas Plant redevelopment will need it, too. St.Petersburg and the Tampa Bay area aren’t shining beacons on this issue, but many believe the project could be an opportunity to reopen the conversation on mass transit again.

One step closer

St. Pete City Council inches towards putting rent control on the ballot.

ast Wednesday night, 25 residents slept on the steps of St. Petersburg City Hall in hopes of raising support for a rent control referendum. Councilmember Deborah Figgs-Sanders heard them and made the motion for a resolution declaring a housing state of emergency at Thursday’s city council meeting. The motion was seconded by Councilmember Lisa WheelerBowman and passed 4-3 with Councilmembers Richie Floyd and Copley Gerdes also in support.

“This has affected me three times in the past 30 days. I understand wholeheartedly what people have been experiencing because it’s in my home now as well,“ Figgs-Sanders said, adding that she recently had to help a family member pay rent and had another member of her family threatened with eviction.

“My reality is drastic change calls for drastic measures,” Figgs-Sanders added.

In February, the Housing, Land Use, and Transportation committee heard a presentation from the city’s legal department on the possible consequences of declaring a housing state of emergency for one year in order to put rent control on the ballot. Floyd made the motion then to declare a housing state of emergency and explore rent control. Councilmembers Brandi Gabbard, Ed Montanari, and Gina Driscoll voted against the measure then and voted against it again last Wednesday.

“I’m trying to be tactful here but honestly I’m sick of living in a world where we don’t respect people who need help the most,” Floyd said.

“I can’t look at people suffering on the street and not want to face ramifications if and when they come.”

in the similar position to St. Pete. But last Thursday, landlords and City of Tampa staff talked councilmembers out of it, with council voting 4-2 against the first reading of an ordinance that could’ve put the rent control measure in front of voters on a November ballot (see p. 15).

Orange County passed similar measures in recent weeks. St. Pete’s motion for resolution faces an uphill battle but it’s a start for the many residents facing rising rental costs.

“I slept outside last night because you’re not listening,” Taro Cole said. “Housing is a basic human right. Let us vote.”

Peggy Alias told council about living in a motel with her two toddler-aged granddaughters after being evicted last year. Despite getting Section 8 housing vouchers, she and her family possibly face yet another eviction. She broke down and begged the council to consider letting voters decide on rent control for themselves. “We’ve got nowhere to go,” she said. “I’m on a fixed income and I don’t know what to do.”

The city’s legal department said the state’s rent control statute calls for an ordinance, not a

resolution, then urged that there isn’t time to conduct either. Councilmember Driscoll said a study was needed on rent control. Councilmember Montanari called the motion “reckless.”

“If legal challenges come, they come, we are supposed to lift each other up,” Councilmember Lisa Wheeler-Bowman said. “How can I go home knowing Miss Peggy is about to be evicted? I know this lady, I don’t need a study to know I want to help you, Miss Peggy.”

After months of pleas from residents, Those in attendance voiced concerns about the growing housing crisis and frustration with leadership being unwilling to allow voters to decide.

The resolution will have its first reading and hearing next Thursday, Aug. 11. If it passes, the resolution will be submitted to the supervisor of elections by Aug. 16 so that it can make the November ballot.

“When there’s this much pain in a community from housing, we have to take drastic measures,” Karla Correa with the St. Pete Tenant’s Union said. “All eyes are watching St. Pete.”

Landlords and City of Tampa staff talk council out of putting rent control on November ballot.

fter city council voted to declare a housing state of emergency and put rent control up for voters decide, landlords and city staff came to city hall last Thursday to talk council out of it. The effort worked, and council voted 4-2 against the first reading of an ordinance that could’ve put the rent control measure in front of voters on a November ballot.

Councilmembers Lynn Hurtak and Orlando Gudes voted in favor of the ordinance. Councilmembers Charlie Miranda, Luis Viera, Guido Maniscalco and Council Chair Joe Citro voted no. Councilman Bill Carlson, who has been most vocal against rent control, was absent.

The proposed ordinance shot down by Tampa City Council was similar to one in Miami-Dade, which has already declared a housing state of emergency and seeks to cap rent increases during the housing crisis. The vote came just one week after council voted 6-1 to implement a local housing emergency and craft an ordinance that would let voters decide on rent control.

Throughout the council meeting, both renters and landlords spoke out about the housing crisis, with renters pleading about being on the verge of

homelessness while landlords argued that their bottom lines were being affected by economic issues. Still, renters outnumbered landlords in their plea for the city to control rents.

Over the last few weeks, and even last Thursday at city hall, several council members believed that recent rent increases were egregious and that something must be done to cap rent gouging. Landlords thought differently.

“What we’ve seen, according to the data, is that rent control actually hurts [housing] supply,” Eric Garduño, Director of Government Affairs for Bay Area Apartment Association, argued during public comment.

Garduño said he is not a Tampa resident.

Echoing an argument that landlords made, Nicole Travis, Administrator of Development and Economic Opportunity, gave a presentation claiming that rent control would negatively affect both renters and landlords.

“If it [rent control] does pass, you can guarantee that landlords are going to hike their rents,” Travis told council. “They’re going to shoot their rents up knowing that they’re going to be stable for a 12 month period, and when that 12 month period is over, they’re gonna shoot their rents

up again in case that [housing] emergency continues, and the people that are most affected by that are mostly people of color and our poorest people in our community.

But Robin Lockett of Florida Rising, who has pushed for rent control, and spends many of her days with tenants who are in desperate positions, told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that that rent gouging is already happening, and that the city decided to allow that to continue. In the Tampa-St. Petersburg area, rents have increased by more than 28% over the past year, from $1,561 in February 2021 to $1,999 last month, according to an analysis by Florida real estate academics.

“The landlords are raising the rents right now,” Lockett told CL. “She [Travis] couldn’t even get her talking points together. What’s the difference if landlords are already gouging their rents?

The city needs to be asking, ‘How can we fight greed?’ not give in to it.”

In cities like Los Angeles and New York, among several other municipalities, rent control measures have existed for decades.

During the meeting, landlords said they wanted to find solutions to the housing crisis, but that rent control is not the solution. Councilman Gudes, who introduced the motion for the city to draft the ordinance, asked the landlords where they’ve been in the months since renters have been showing up to detail their desperation.

Councilwoman Hurtak supported the ordinance and also called for more funding to go to rent relief.

Councilman Viera and others had questioned the ordinance during the meeting, which was adjusted by the city’s legal staff to remove the 5% rent increase cap that council had suggested. City legal staff also decided to insert a laundry list of exemptions for landlords under the ordinance.

After the vote, Viera told CL that he intended to suggest that the ordinance be examined, and that it be considered for a March ballot so there’s more time to flesh out the details before passing it.

He still hopes there’s an opportunity to get another version of the ordinance on a ballot in March.

Hillsborough judge under scrutiny over ‘woke’ attack ad, which experts say flouted state law.

A

n advertisement against a candidate for Hillsborough County judge is under scrutiny because it is linked to an opponent and did not contain a disclaimer, which is required by law.

Local attorney Nancy Jacobs is challenging incumbent Jared Smith for Hillsborough County Circuit Court Judge, Group 37. An ad, which was uploaded to social media in late July and has since been removed, claims she has sided with “woke” and far left groups and would have an “activist agenda” as judge.

Under Florida Election Law, a disclaimer is required when a candidate or any entity linked to the candidate takes out an ad against an opponent. However, no disclaimer was attached to the attack ad. What’s more is that judges are not supposed to say disparaging, non-objective claims about each other or other candidates, especially during political races, under Canon 7 of the Canons of Judicial Ethics.

Campaign finance records show that Smith—who was endorsed by the Tampa Bay Times despite a troubling history—paid a total of $1,000 on July 17 to Social Media Ad Group (SMAG) located at 3310 W Cypress St. Suite 206 in Tampa. Under the “purpose” section of Smith’s $1,000 contribution to SMAG, it says: advertisement. The very next week, the ad against Jacobs appeared on social media.

On a phone call, Jamie Arellano, a representative from SMAG, confirmed to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that Smith is their client and that the company released the ad. “He’s a regular client of ours, we handle his social media distribution,” Arellano said, adding that Smith has “been our client for months.”

Upon further questioning about the ad, Arellano handed the phone to Matt Wolf of the Ivanov and Wolf Law Firm who said, “We don’t comment on any of our clients.”

Ivanov and Wolf was caught up in a foreclosure scandal in 2017 with Michael Chancey, whose name is listed as the registered agent, or owner, of SMAG. Arellano later sent an official statement claiming that SMAG put out the ad against Jacobs without his input, despite Smith being their client and paying them the money the week before.

“Neither Judge Jared Smith nor his campaign authorized the creation of or distribution of the video we had posted about Nancy Jacobs that was previously accessible through the following link,” wrote Arellano. “We are being paid by Judge Smith’s Campaign to increase the reach of the social media posts that Judge Smith’s campaign posts on their campaign Facebook page only. Neither Judge Smith nor the campaign have ever authorized any negative advertisements related to Nancy Jacobs. Judge Smith did

not see the video prior to us posting it and knew nothing about the video whatsoever. We took the video down immediately when asked to do so.”

When asked who requested the ad to be removed, SMAG did not respond.

choice. “What makes this kind of misinformation or disinformation so sad is that people are already struggling to get good information about judicial candidates,” MacManus said. She also agreed with Planas’ legal assessment of the ad, and added that because judge candidates are restricted in what they can say, they sometimes turn to third party groups.

A negative mailer ad about Smith is also circulating, which calls him out on abusing his judicial discretion in trying to prevent a 17-year-old from getting an abortion. This ad, unlike SMAG’s, has a disclaimer showing that it was paid for by “Progressive Youth PC” political action committee.

Jacobs told CL that she had nothing to do with that ad and declined to comment on the content of SMAG’s ad.

On July 22, the Tampa Bay Times editorial board endorsed Smith despite his troubling abortion decision. CL responded by highlighting the problems with the Times’ candidate, and first reported that Smith’s wife told a Christian church that Jacobs “needs Jesus” despite her practicing Judaism. Smith sits on the board of the Idlewild Foundation, a religious non-profit aligned with the Idlewild Baptist Church.

The Times told CL that the endorsement “speaks for itself” even though the paper did not actually explain why the editorial board chose Smith over Jacobs. A few days later, the Times published a story framing the situation as two candidates attacking each other. The paper noted that Jacobs filed a complaint against Smith with the state Judicial Qualifications Commission, accusing Smith of “disparaging the faith of an opposing candidate.”

Nowhere in the article did it mention that the Times editorial board endorsed Smith.

The alarm was first raised to CL about Smith’s ad by John T. Fox, a local political consultant, and by Samuel Ronen, a Jewish activist from the group Florida For Change.

“You would think that judge Smith and his wife spouting anti-Semitic rhetoric would be the lowest he could go as a judicial candidate, but here we are,” Ronen told CL. “I can’t tell if it’s more disappointing that Smith thinks so little of us that he didn’t cover his tracks better, or the fact that Tampa Bay Times still won’t yank their endorsement of this man. If these are the things we can find with a few minutes of googling, what else is he up to?”

Judge Smith has not responded to multiple requests for comment. Florida’s 2022 primary election is already underway and runs through Aug. 23.

DeSantis suspends Hillsborough State Attorney after he said he wouldn’t prosecute abortions.

By Colin Wolf Dugan called Warren “a fraud” and referenced his decision to drop charges on several Black Lives Matter protesters following the 2020 George Floyd protests. Though it should be noted that Warren did in fact pursue charges against protester Jamie Bullock, in a case was later dropped due to lack of evidence.

Besides signaling his support for gender-affirming care and abortion access, Warren—who was elected in 2016 and then reelected by a large margin in November of 2020—has been a consistent critic of DeSantis, and has also stated that the governor’s “antirioting” bill was tearing off “a couple corners of the constitution.”

Following DeSantis’ announcement, numerous state and local leaders voiced their concerns over his decision.

“I was a HS classmate of [Warren], & even back then could see the integrity and honesty that

would come to define his public service,” tweeted Tampa City Councilwoman Lynn Hurtak. “We, the voters of Hillsborough County, elected him to apply his prosecutorial discretion in accordance with our viewpoints & he has done so.”

State Rep. Anna Eskamani also criticized DeSantis for today’s decision.

“State Attorney [Warren] is the ONLY State Attorney in FL to sign a pledge saying he would NOT prosecute women who end their own pregnancies. Let it be known that DeSantis not only wants to ban abortion in FL but he wants to ARREST people who seek self-managed abortion,” tweeted Eskamani. “And now DeSantis is attempting to suspend him — this is a sick overreach by our Governor who is taking away our personal freedoms and punishing

the very people who are fighting to protect us.

DeSantis could go after price gouging landlords but instead THIS is what he does.”

Congresswoman Kathy Castor also chimed in, and called DeSantis’ decision “extreme and dangerous.”

“The governor’s actions constitute an extreme abuse of power - a new low for DeSantis who fails our great state with his mean-spirited, selfish and fiscally-irresponsible focus on his political ambitions alone,” tweeted Castor.

“The Republican abortion ban in Florida is outrageous and cruel + DeSantis is turning women and doctors into criminals for personal health care decisions. And it’s crystal clear now that they will go much farther, into territory Floridians view as extreme and dangerous.”

ast Thursday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended State Attorney Andrew Warren of the 13th Judicial Circuit in Hillsborough County, due to “neglect of duty.” While speaking at a press conference in Tampa, DeSantis cited Article IV, Section 7 of the Constitution of the State of Florida for his decision to issue the executive order, and specifically pointed to Warren’s decision not to pursue charges against abortion patients or doctors, as well as his public support of transgender healthcare.

“State Attorneys have a duty to prosecute crimes as defined in Florida law, not to pick and choose which laws to enforce based on his personal agenda,” said DeSantis. “It is my duty to hold Florida’s elected officials to the highest standards for the people of Florida. “ Last July, Warren called Florida’s 15-week abortion ban “unconstitutional.”

“This 15-week ban is an unconstitutional law. The Legislature is hoping courts ignore the Florida constitution. But I’m upholding the law and protecting the fundamental rights of all Floridians,” said Warren.

In his announcement, the governor said Warren will be replaced by Susan Lopez, who he appointed in 2021 to serve as judge on the Hillsborough County Court. “I have the utmost trust that Judge Susan Lopez will lead the office through this transition and faithfully uphold the rule of law,” DeSantis stated.

The suspension of Warren, who is a Democrat, is not a permanent removal from office, and can be disputed. DeSantis noted that he did not speak to Warren regarding the suspension before his announcement.

“Today’s political stunt is an illegal overreach that continues a dangerous pattern by Ron DeSantis of using his office to further his own political ambition,” said Warren in a statement.

“It spits in the face of the voters of Hillsborough County who have twice elected me to serve them, not Ron DeSantis. In our community, crime is low, our Constitutional rights—including the right to privacy—are being upheld, and the people have the right to elect their own leaders—not have them dictated by an aspiring presidential candidate who has shown time and again he feels accountable to no one. Just because the governor violates your rights, it doesn’t mean they don’t exist.”

DeSantis was joined at the press conference by harsh critics of Warren, including former Tampa Police chief Brian Dugan, Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, and others.

Another bit of irony: The DA he suspended won reelection in 2020 with 53% of the vote, whereas DeSantis won in 2018 by 0.4 percentage points while getting stomped in Hillsborough.

So maybe he should take a pass on what the people there want.

The governor’s bumbling attempts at dictatorship might be darkly comedic if he weren’t a frontrunner for the Republican presidential nomination. But if and when the little tyrant becomes everyone’s problem, our democracy will need Republicans willing to stand against him at their own political peril.

When Democrats shiv someone like Meijer, they’re making that less likely— and lending credibility to Trumpian claims that their concerns about democratic erosion are nothing more t h a n p o l it i c a l posturing.

This is an important point: Either Trump and his acolytes pose an existential threat to our democratic institutions or they don’t. If they do—and they do—why elevate them?

Michigan’s 3rd District is a tossup. But it won’t be the tossup on which Congress turns. To keep control of the House, Democrats have to win all the races that FiveThirtyEight currently rates as tossups— plus a handful that favor Republicans. So it’s worth asking whether the juice is worth the squeeze.

But the real danger lies in the message Democrats sent: If you do the right thing, we’ll fuck you for it. What incentive do Republicans have to take “courageous” stands if they know that not only will their party ostracize them, but the other guys will pour fuel on the fire?

That’s not to say that Democrats should help Republicans win reelection. But they shouldn’t go out of their way to defeat the ones who respect the rule of law. It’s not like the GOP is getting less authoritarian.

In Dallas this week, the Conservative Political Action Conference invited autocrat Viktor Orban, the prime minister of Hungary— whose close adviser recently resigned while calling a racist speech he made “pure Nazi”— to open its event. Orban delivered a grievanceridden address about “globalists” and “communists” and “fake news.” Trump, Sen. Ted Cruz, and other Republican luminaries followed.

Meanwhile, in Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis wielded his executive powers in an unprecedentedly autocratic fashion. He suspended a twice-elected district attorney for what DeSantis called “incompetence”: signing pledges not to prosecute doctors who provide reproductive and genderaffirming health care services—and criticizing DeSantis for his authoritarian actions.

Ironic, huh?

DeSantis, of course, is the governor who revoked Disney’s longstanding tax benefit in retaliation for the company criticizing his

t’s possible, if not likely, that John Gibbs would have beaten Michigan Rep. Peter Meijer without Democrats’ help. While the $450,000 they spent exceeded what Gibbs raised during the campaign, it paled in comparison to Meijer’s arsenal. Besides, Gibbs had Donald Trump’s endorsement, which is worth twice that sum in Republican primaries.

But to the degree it mattered, the meddling paid off. Democrats got the matchup they wanted: Instead of challenging a normie incumbent in November, Hillary Scholten will face an election-denying, possibly anti-Semitic former Trump staffer who promoted the weirdass conspiracy theory that Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager participated in satanic rituals. A seat they’d probably lose became a seat they’ll probably win.

This wasn’t the first time this cycle that the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) tried to game a Republican primary on behalf of a MAGA mouth-breather. It was, however, the first time their preferred opponent won. Machiavelli would be proud.

But the DCCC is playing a very dangerous game, one whose short-term benefits are far outweighed by its long-term risks.

Meijer was one of only 10 Republicans—and the only freshman—to vote for Trump’s impeachment following the Jan. 6 insurrection. Quite appropriately, Democratic leaders praised his “courage and integrity” while denouncing “opportunistic politicians who desire to rule at all cost.”

Meijer’s party, meanwhile, joked about assassinating him.

But as soon as Democrats no longer found it useful to pit Good Republicans against Trump’s Lackeys, they dropped nearly half a mill reminding Michigan Republicans that Gibbs was Trump’s guy and shrugging off the hypocrisy by quoting Jean-Paul Sartre: “In politics, we all have dirty hands up to our elbows. Nobody’s pure,” Rep. Jamie Raskin said.

The day before the primary, Meijer wrote that it was nauseating to watch “my Democratic colleagues to sell out any pretense of principle for political expediency—at once decrying the downfall of democracy while rationalizing the use of their hard-raised dollars to prop up the supposed object of their fears.

Paul Guzzo broke the news of the Ybor City eatery’s closure last week, when its third-generation owner Larry Scaglione told him that it’s simply just the right time to close his restaurant. Although the restaurant itself will close next month, 60 year-old Scaglione will continue dishing out his hearty Italian meals through his catering business which shares the same name as his soon-to-close eatery.

Customers of Tony’s Ybor Restaurant have a little under a month to head to 2001 N 22nd St. for one last taste of its beloved chicken alfredo and baked ziti. After Sept. 2, its doors will remain closed until Scaglione finds a tenant to rent the space for their own concept.

Hope you made it out to last Tuesday’s drag queen bingo at Punky’s Bar and Grill— because it was the last one ever. After seven years open in downtown St. Petersburg’s booming Grand Central District, Punky’s Bar and Grill at 3063 Central Ave. has suddenly closed. Its last day in operation was Wednesday, Aug. 3. In a farewell letter posted on Punky’s Facebook, owners Lynn Deibert and John Burt honored the legacy of their queer haven.

“We have become a place of safety for the LGBTQ+ community, a melting pot for people from ALL walks of life…and their pets! We have celebrated victories, survived struggles, mourned losses and came together to help each other and the community,” the post reads. The statement also emphasizes that Punky’s has raised over $150,000 for various local charities throughout the years. Its owners are also helping their employees find new jobs in wake of the restaurant’s sudden closure, in addition to distributing the kitchen’s remaining food amongst the former staff.

Punky’s was known for its events—like outdoor markets, drag queen bingo and live music—cheap drinks, a large outdoor patio, and welcoming atmosphere for all walks of life.

The Central Avenue-facing restaurant offered a no-nonsense menu of burgers, wings, flatbreads, salads and sandwiches, in addition to a wide variety of beer, wine and signature cocktails.

Right now, it’s unsure what the Punky’s building will become. A former employee told Patch that a sports bar will take over the space, although the claim cannot be confirmed yet.

Punky’s opened in December of 2015, filling the gap that Georgie’s Alibi left when the popular gay bar and club closed that same year.

Seven years later, a plethora of queer-owned and friendly businesses populate downtown St. Pete, following in the footsteps of Punky’s and its predecessors. The old Georgie’s Alibi building at 3100 3rd Ave. N will soon take on a new life, as the space is currently being transformed into the upcoming Cider Press Gastropub—slated to open within the next few months.

And although Punky’s has shuttered its doors for good, downtown St. Pete’s Grand Central District still has many other LGBTQ+ friendly restaurants and bars, including Central Avenue stalwart Old Key West Bar & Grill, Cocktail, Salty Nun, and the upcoming Zoie’s restaurant.

According to the restaurant’s website, the eatery has feen family owned and operated since 1929. Large portraits of its previous owners—Tony Scaglione and his father Nunzio Scaglione—still grace the walls of the quaint restaurant. In 1967, Tony purchased the Ybor City eatery from his father for $1 and soon after changed its name from Americus Restaurant to his own namesake, due to his larger-than-life personality.

The spacious outdoor patio, which once belonged to Foundation Coffee’s now-closed Tampa Heights cafe, is furnished with various types of plants and seating arrangements. The trellis-like ceiling filters out some sun, but it can definitely still get pretty hot out there. But luckily, Elevation and Flower Crown Kombucha sell a variety of iced drinks that can help you endure the Florida summer.

Elevation opened its second location out of the co-work space Brave Haus earlier this year—just two buildings over from its brand new Tampa Heights location. At Brave Haus, Elevation had a small bar that served a somewhat-limited menu of caffeinated beverages, but at its new location, it shares a full service counter with Flower Crown.

Alongside kombucha, coffee, tea, lattes, nitro cold brew and mocktails, the joint location also offers several pastries and sweet treats like macarons, muffins and cookies. Flower Crown—which debuted on Franklin Street in January of 2021— offers a consistent rotation of kombucha on tap, as its current flavors include key lime mojito, pink passionfruit and “pineappley” ever after. And yes,

the kombucha spot often honors its namesake by selling fresh flowers inside of the taproom.

Elevation also recently started serving breakfast burritos at its new Tampa Heights location, which can be ordered with steak and chicken—but also can be made vegan. Hummus, its signature waffles (which include gluten-free options), oatmeal and other small plates will soon be added to Elevation’s menu alongside its breakfast burritos.

According to Elevation’s social media, the Tampa-based roaster and cafe will soon add a line of exotically-spiced drinks that have a “unique flavor profile that you have to taste to believe.” A representative of the specialty cafe also told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that its new Tampa Heights location will soon host a variety of events like latte art competitions, coffee cuppings and even a coffee club.

Its new shared Tampa Heights cafe is now open from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sundays And although Foundation Coffee closed out of the same space in 2020, its Ybor City and Riverview locations remain open. Elevation’s

Gin Blossoms headlines Florida Aquarium’s ‘Rhythm & Brews by the Bay’ next month After a two-year hiatus and a slight name change, The Florida Aquarium finally brings back one of Tampa’s best parties. Rhythm & Brews by the Bay— a concert experience with unlimited beer tastings—returns to 701 Channelside Dr. on Friday, Sept. 16.

There are both $125 general admission tickets and $175 VIP tickets for sale at flaquarium. org. Both ticket tiers come with unlimited local beer samples, a complimentary beer stein, access to the live music, scenic views of Hillsborough Bay and all of the aquarium’s critters—but the VIP tickets grant guests early access, in addition to a complimentary bar and dedicated concert viewing area.

A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will also support The Florida Aquarium’s mission programs, which focus conservation, research, education and outreach.

Gin Blossoms is no stranger to the Tampa Bay area, as the five-piece band brought its notable songs like “Hey Jealousy” and “Til I Hear it From You” to St. Petersburg’s Palladium Theater just last fall. And although the alt-rocker band has released a slew of music since the early ‘90s, some of its most popular singles are still from its 1992 LP, New Miserable Experience.

Opening for Gin Blossoms is Ken Block and Andrew Copeland of Florida-based band Sister Hazel, who will kick things off with an acoustic set at 7 p.m. The entire event should run until 11 p.m., so you have about four hours to sample as many beers as possible.

Tampa Chick-fil-A owner fined $12K for violating child labor laws A local Chick-fil-A is facing a steep penalty after authorities discovered middle school-aged employees were being overworked. On Aug. 2, a Tampa Chick-fil-A franchise, located at 2551 N Dale Mabry Hwy., was fined by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) for violating child labor laws.

Investigators found that between Labor Day and June 1, the fast-food restaurant, which is owned by Brito Enterprises of Tampa Inc., allowed 17 workers, ages 14 and 15, to work past 7 p.m. or more than three hours during a school day. As a result of violating child labor provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, the owner of the franchise was fined $12,478 in civil money penalties.

“Employers must familiarize themselves with the working conditions that come with hiring minor employees. While gaining meaningful work experience is a good thing, it should not interfere with a child’s educational opportunities,” said Wage and Hour Division District Director Nicolas Ratmiroff in a statement. “We encourage employers to access our Youthrules.gov website or contact the Wage and Hour Division to learn how to keep these young workers safe on the job.”

This isn’t the first time that Chick-fil-A has been in the news for questionable labor practices.

Last month, a Chick-fil-A in Hendersonville, North Carolina was under fire for offering to pay “volunteers” with chicken sandwiches for working the drive-thru line. After heavy criticism, the Chick-fil-A revoked their proposal and released an apology statement.

A new round of 2022-23 theater announcements.

t. Pete’s freeFall Theatre has a packed schedule in store for its upcoming season.

Tickets are now available for a season filled with two world premieres, classic adventures, romance and more. In addition to the shows, the theater will also bring back gameNights, movie screenings, concerts and cabarets to its packed schedule.

Single tickets start at $45.

Guests can also take advantage of the theater’s new monthly subscription: $29 for admission to all ticketed events during that month.

The season kicked off on July 29 with American playwright Neil Simon’s final play and witty romance “Rose & Walsh” which runs through Aug. 28. Oct. 5-23, freeFall Theatre—located at 6099 Central Ave. in St. Petersburg—will hold the world premiere of “All Things Equal: The Life and Trials of Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” by Tony Award winner Rupert Holmes. freeFall’s hit holiday show, the hilarious and heartwarming “The Night Before,” follows, running Nov. 25-Dec. 24.

Other season shows include Chicago-based drama “Blues in the Night” (Jan. 27-Feb. 26), Ken Ludwig’s “Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery” (March 24-April 23), and the world premiere of freeFall’s “Oz” (June 2-July 9). freeFall’s Tandem Series will also make a comeback for the 2022-23 season, bringing audiences concerts, shows and a variety of experiences. The theater’s popular gameNights and Movies with Matthew are also returning this season.

The first play, “A Doll’s House, Part 2” directed

by Stephanie Gularte will run Nov. 3-20, with a bitingly humorous sequel to the classic original.

“The Elephant Man,” directed by Stuart Fail and onstage Feb. 2 -9, will bring audiences on a journey alongside the dramafilled life of a physically deformed man living in nineteenth-century London. The final show, “All My Sons,” directed by Christopher Marshall, revisits the World War II-classic and premiers June 1-18.

Tampa Repertory Theatre announces plays for 2022-23 season kicking off this fall Three new plays are coming to The Tampa Repertory Theatre for its 2022-23 season starting this fall. Across three Tampa stages, the theater will present “A Doll’s House, Part 2,” “The Elephant Man” and “All My Sons.” This season’s theme revolves around ideas of social and individual responsibility, the self and the challenges of being human. The shows will run from November 2022 to June 2023.

Play centered on Tampa’s civil rights lunch counter sit-in is part of Stageworks Theatre’s 40th anniversary season Tampa Bay’s longest running professional theater company, Stageworks Theatre, celebrates its 40th anniversary with new season announcements. Stageworks Theatre’s 20222023 six-show season will mark one of its most ambitious yet, with titles like “The Color Purple,” the premiere of Tampa playwright’s “When the Righteous Triumph” and many more.

The season kicks off Sept. 9 with jazz-filled classic “The Color Purple” which is also the largest musical the theater has performed. All season shows will be held Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m.. Matinee shows are Saturday and Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m. The Cubancentric holiday story “Christmas Contigo” begins (Dec. 2), followed by anti-love comedy “The Smell of the Kill” (Feb. 10).

After that, Tampa playwright, and former Creative Loafing Tampa Bay theater critic, Mark E. Lieb retells the story Tampa’s civil rights lunch counter sit-in with “When the Righteous Triumph,” taking the stage starting March 17.

“Stageworks has for many years shown itself to be attentive to human rights issues,” Leib, whose plays have appeared in New York, Chicago, and locally,” Lieb wrote in a a press release. “And Artistic director Karla Hartley was enthusiastic about ‘Righteous’ from the start.”

NIGHT MOVES: freeFall’s hilarious and heartwarming ‘The Night Before’ opens in November.

A staged reading happened last spring, ahead of this fall’s full production. The play takes place in Eisenhower-era America. Local heroes of the civil rights movement—the barber Clarence Fort, who started the sit-ins, Reverend A. Leon Lowry of the NAACP, who brought the force of his organization behind the downtown protests, and Major Julian Lane—all show up in the work, alongside students from Middleton and Blake. The F.W. Woolworth Department Store on the corner of North Franklin and East Polk Streets in downtown Tampa is where the sit-in began on Feb. 29, 1960, just one mile away from where Stageworks is located at 1120 E Kennedy Blvd. in Channelside.

“Cody Fowler, who led negotiations between the Black community and white store owners, and the mysterious Joseph Dasher, a maverick

figure who organized large protests that threatened to swamp NAACP efforts,” also figures into the reading, according to Lieb, who added, “I researched the sit-ins closely and spoke with anyone I could find from that time and after. It’s a great story and one that the local population should know. I’m honored that Stageworks commissioned me to tell it,” Lieb added.

To honor late stageworks founder Anna Brennen, “Talking With…,” featuring monologues from 11 idiosyncratic characters, will happen on April 28. The final show of the season, “The Great American Trailer Park Musical,” will have audiences laughing alongside Florida’s most exclusive trailer park starting June 9.More information about Stageworks Theatre and season tickets can be found via stageworkstheatre. org.

It starts out acoustic, but gradually evolves into a more electric piece, which you know will be cause for a stirring moment at a live show. The 26-year-old singer is expected to lean on that song, as well as a few originals of all genres, plus covers of

Bowie, Elton, and Leonard Cohen. (The Attic at Rock Brothers Brewing, Ybor City) Urbane Cowboys There’s no telling what Urbane Cowboys will do with two hours, but saddle up because the fellas have the time at this free gig that promises to go heavy on the group’s brand of Whiskeytown, Social Distortion and Hank Sr.-influenced “ass kickin’, beer drinkin’, boot stompin’ rock n’ roll.” Here we go again. Chris Brown and Lil Baby One of the most problematic pop stars of the last 10 years is returning to Tampa this weekend. Brown last played here in 2019 at Amalie Arena, with one reviewer noting that they didn’t notice any remorse in the singer’s eyes. Remorse, Brown’s critics would argue, should come in the wake of the 33-year-old’s long history of violence, including a 2017 altercation with a Tampa photographer where charges were eventually dropped. His supporters will point to bipolar and PTSD diagnoses, plus Brown’s time in therapy, as evidence that he’s trying to turn over a new leaf. The album isn’t eclectic like 2014’s Gotham City, but it’s for sure an upbeat return to Chris Travis’ roots. The trap star has dropped new albums every year for the last decade, so he’ll have plenty of material to lean on—some of which may not even be out yet (Pegasus Lounge, Tampa) C Crywank w/Chastity/MrENC You can probably guess where Crywank’s moniker came from, but you won’t be able to predict how you’ll feel after a full set of mildlydepressing, ineffably potent anti-folk from this U.K. outfit that makes music for fans of Daniel Johnston and The Moldy Peaches.

was a pleasant surprise to fans who thought the band was over after a 2019 breakup announcement, and while Dan Watson gave Jay Clayton the blessing to do that album solo, they’ll both be present for this show that’s part of Crywank’s first-ever U.S. tour.

The sad and rad vibes are amplified by Chastity whose new album Suffer Summer is the punk and grunge 2022 release you need to be listening to right now—and you’re a damn fool to not get there early to catch a set from Mrenc, Lakeland’s patron saint of scuzzy art-pop noir. (Crowbar, Ybor City) C Daddy Kool’s Punk Flea in the A/C: Kick Dicker w/Suck Brick Kid/Except You/Big Sad/Silver Alert Lakeland’s punkrock flea market is very, well, outdoors, and let’s face it: it’s hotter than balls out there, and the only thing worse than balls is sweaty ones. That’s why the party heading west this weekend and (mostly indoors) for St. Pete’s Warehouse Arts District where about three dozen vendors get to sell their wares inside while five vend outside (as punishment?) for six hours. Five bands— including Ft. Meyers thrashpunk outfit Except You and Orlando pop-punk group Suck Brick Kid—get the music started at 1 p.m., and yes, there’ll be folks selling food, too. (The Factory, St. Petersburg)

Tempo Daylife Pool Party: Illenium For better and worse, EDM shows are a dime a dozen in Tampa Bay, and while Markus Schulz is at the WTR Pool off the Courtney Campbell on Sunday, Grammy-nominated Nicholas Miller (aka Illenium) gives Tampa Bay its best untz this weekend with an epic poolside set at the Hard Rock where he’ll play a bold and progressive strain of beats that flirt with future bass, trap, drum and bass, dubstep, and even pop-punk and rock.

The show is mostly sold-out, so consider yourself lucky if you get in (and take a spin on some slots, in that case, too). (Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Tampa)

C Christopher Cross Call your yacht-rock loving parents, because the genre’s king is, um, sailing, his soft and groovy sounds into Clearwater for the second time this year. In March, he appeared at Ruth Eckerd Hall alongside Todd Rundgren and Denny Laine on his second “It Was 50 Years Ago Today” Beatles tribute tour. The Cap has a much smaller capacity, and the 71-year-old—who was temporarily paralyzed after a pre-vaxx bout with COVID—shouldn’t have a problem selling it out. C Chael Blinya w/Heyeyella/Dennis Amadeus Tuesday is usually really good for local hip-hop heads thanks to a pair of open-mic style events at Tampa Heights’ Shuffle and King State, but Chael Blinya has a Wednesday bill to get you to come out for a midweek treat just a few miles up the road. Driven by three lyrics-forward Bay area emcee-poets (Blinya, plus Heyella and Dennis Amadeus) this community-centric affair includes cake tasting and a pay-whatyou-can cover charge. Dear Oracle, I love my partner. I’m in love with my partner. But I hate it here. I hate the South and want to move. I’ve never been quiet about hating Florida and make jokes about leaving often. But I’m actually, seriously considering moving (either out of the country altogether or to a major city with more opportunities in general) in a couple of years, but I haven’t *truly* discussed this with my partner because I’m afraid they won’t come with me—and what’s the point of saying it now and maybe ruining things when I could wait? If I stay, I feel like I’ll grow to resent them for “keeping me here” but if I don’t it might be a solo move.—Caged Bird Cards: Two of Wands, The Hermit, Two of Swords, The Fool (reveresed), The Knight of Cups, The King of Cups Dear Caged Bird, I doubt there’s a reader out there who has not been in your position at some point in their lives—loving someone and worried that somehow, saying a want out loud will jeopardize the whole relationship. I know I’ve been there. I was debating on what kind of spread to pull for you because this wasn’t a typical “stay-or-go” situation. But, to me, it felt like the most pressing issue was that you haven’t told your partner your truest desire out of fear of losing them, so I drew cards for the conversation you haven’t had yet.

I know you want a future with your partner and that (to you) a move might jeopardize this. And I’ll be real with you: there’s a chance they might not want to move. Leaving your homeland—be it region or country—can be very difficult. It’s hard to move somewhere where you have no ties, or family, especially if you’re immigrating to a country and don’t speak the language. There are a lot of things to consider.

But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have the conversation because there’s a 50% chance they will want to ramble on with you.

I want to start with the last three cards of the spread: The Fool, The Knight of Cups, and The King of Cups. The Fool is a card of new beginnings, journeys, and general newness all around. The idea of you moving is “new” in the sense that nothing is in motion yet. It’s all theoretical, which can be a really fun place to start. I drew you as The Knight of Cups—a little more gung-ho, a get-shit-done kind of romantic partner—while your partner was The King of Cups reversed.

I don’t think your partner would do well with a spontaneous plan, like deciding to move to Chicago because you liked “The Bear.” Instead, I think your partner needs a minute to wrap

their head around an idea, to give it some deep contemplation.

So start with asking if there’s anywhere they’ve wanted to travel to or visit. Plenty of couples go on vacation, fall in love with a place, and move house. Who knows? Maybe your partner has always wanted to see Scotland, and then next thing you know, you’re looking up real estate agents in Glasgow.

For the actual conversation, we have both the Two of Wands and the Two of Swords, both of which represents balance. The Two of Wands is about balancing hope with the future, and the Two of Swords is about maintaining objectivity and not losing your head.

When you talk to your partner, tell them why you’re unhappy in the South, what your hopes are with a move. Then you need to really listen to their answers, whatever they may be. If they’re not down, don’t just make a joke about it and never bring it up again. Keep a level head (remember, this is all theoretical right now) and press them a bit on their objections. Are these deal breakers for them? Or are they milder concerns?

I also suggest doing a bit of objective soulsearching on why you want to leave the South.

What specifically do you hate about it? What do you hope to gain by moving elsewhere?

I ask because I was a child of the South, born and reared and hated it, who left California at age 18 with zero intention of ever coming back

to Dixie. Four years later, I moved to Texas.

It turns out what I hated about “the South”—the racism, homophobia, casual sexism, Christian nationalism, anti-intellectualism— was just what I hated about America. All those issues existed in California too. (Plus a hella annoying sense of cultural superiority.)

So don’t be devastated if you see issues of the South showing up in other places in the Western World. But a new home might also give you things the South can’t, like universal health care or the option to wear a sweater in September. Whatever those reasons are, know they’re important to you.

The Hermit shows that you know what your soul needs, and I encourage you to honor that.

Because if you stay and grow resentful—a fear you named in your question—then that will dim your light and cause the love to wither. Then, it wasn’t a choice to ‘save’ the relationship or not.

It was to end it quickly or prolong it.

The idea of moving is not necessarily a death blow to the relationship. After lots of thought, your partner might decide to join you in this adventure.

But even if the worst-case scenario happens and you bring up a wish for the future, and your partner breaks up with you, you still did right by you. You know what you need, and as dark as those feelings might be, the light of The Hermit’s lantern can guide you home, wherever that may be.

I’m a 36-year-old married woman who fantasizes about her husband of 10 years being intimate with other women. This isn’t a new thing for me.

I’ve fantasized about this for years, but we’ve never acted on it. He is intrigued but afraid that it might somehow damage our relationship. But I’ve done some research on it and it’s something I’m eager to try. (With my husband’s consent, of course!) But in all my research, I’ve found different and sometimes conflicting definitions of what it means to be a “cuckquean.” I’m interested in watching my husband pleasure and be pleasured by another woman in a purely physical way. I’m not interested in being “cheated on.” No flirty texts, no unsanctioned coffee dates. I’ve read accounts of women who are turned on by the humiliation and insecurity of their partner being with others, often women the husband knows “in real life,” either through work or through social life.

In my case, I would rather my husband not even know the name of the other woman. And he would only be able to sleep with her with my consent and I would want to be “in control” of the situation. Venus is right: there are guys out there who call themselves cuckolds but aren’t subs and don’t wanna be humiliated or degraded. But I would argue that these guys aren’t cuckolds, WTCAI, just as I would argue that you aren’t a cuckquean.

We have lots of words to describe letting your partner fuck other people—open, monogamish, swinging, mate-swapping, hotwifing, hothusbanding, stag and vixen, CNM—but we only have one word to describe letting your partner fuck other people while getting off on being humiliated and degraded: cuckolding. And since most people understand cuckolding to involve humiliation and degradation, telling someone you’re a cuckold when you’re not into those things is like telling someone you’re a power bottom when you don’t like anal or telling someone you’re into impact play when you don’t like having your ass so much as tapped. It confuses rather than clarifies.

What’s worse, tell someone you’re a cuckold/cuckquean and they might start degrading you while they’re fucking your partner, which would ruin everything for everybody.

As for setting up a sex date for your husband with an anonymous woman, Venus had a practical suggestion.

“There are a lot more men out there looking for casual sex than there are women,” said Venus, “which makes WTCAI’s fantasy difficult to pull off. But I know a woman whose wife wanted to be blindfolded and then have a group of women come in—all strangers to her—and go down on her. Not an easy fantasy to pull off either! So, they hired a sex worker to facilitate things and it was amazing. Perhaps this would be an ideal solution—hiring a sex worker— because then WTCAI would be in total control.”

Re-reading your letter it sounds to me like what you really wanna do is whore your husband out. It’s an expression I’ve heard gay men use to describe setting up an anonymous encounter for their boyfriends or husbands. You find someone you wanna see fuck your husband—taking care to find someone your husband would wanna get fucked by—and all your husband needs to know is when and where. Cuckolds and cuckqueans are subs and a sub can “top from below,” as the saying goes, but at least officially a cuck doesn’t have the power. Someone who’s whoring his husband out, on the other hand, has all the power. And that’s what you want, right?

They’re being “cheated on” by their wives. And cuckqueans aren’t sharing their husbands. They’re being “cheated on” by their husbands. Cuckolds and cuckqueans, by definition, don’t just wanna see their spouses fucking another person, they also want their partners to humiliate and degrade them. (I put “cheated on” in quotes because the “cheating” is consensual and symbolic; likewise, “sharing” is in quotes above because spouses aren’t property.)

“But cuckolding and hotwifing have a really wide spectrum of practices and dynamics,” said Venus. “Some cucks are submissive and get into degradation and some cucks really aren’t subs or into degradation at all. I don’t see why hothusbanding/cuckqueaning can’t be just as varied.
