After completing the remainder of Martinez’s term, Freedman was twice elected Mayor of Tampa, serving from 1987-1995, so she’s seen what it’s like to be on both sides of city hall.

“The city council certainly needs to pay close attention to things and they need to speak up

“I was glad to see Mayor Castor finally talk about transparency,” Lewis wrote in an email.

“It is past time for transparency in this administration. I would like to see transparency in civil rights complaints, employment discrimination, affordable housing, MBE participation, neighborhood development in East Tampa, police misconduct, police lawsuit settlements, and many more. What took so long?”

Patrick Manteiga, editor and publisher of La Gaceta has discussed Tampa politics in his paper for decades, following the tradition of his family, which founded the trilingual paper 100 years ago.

“I’ve never seen the mayor get so involved in city council business, it’s unprecedented,” said Manteiga. “The mayor says she wants accountability from council, but where was that during her police chief search and appointment of Mary O’Connor? And where was the transparency when the city handed the Hanna Avenue project to a contractor in a private bid?,” he questioned.

Councilmen Gudes, Dingfelder and Carlson have been outspoken about the problems with the administration’s police chief search and the Hanna Avenue project, which experts say may have violated Florida law when Castor’s administration handed over $100 million of city funds to a contractor without a required public bidding process, among other problems.

“People are saying, ‘Stop this fighting’, but there’s a reason for the fighting, and I haven’t seen the administration say, ‘We’re going to get back in our lane,’” Manteiga told CL. On the show “WaveMakers” on WMNF, President of Tampa Tiger Bay Club and longtime Tampa political reporter and editor Tom Scherberger echoed the sentiments of unprecedented levels of conflict at city hall.

“I have been covering Tampa politics for 40 years and have never seen anything like what is going on at city hall these days,” Scherberger said during his show. “All three council members also happen to be outspoken critics of Mayor Jane Castor’s favorite, but controversial proposals.”

Tom’s wife, Janet Scherberger, a former reporter at the St. Petersburg Times and communications expert, said that while there have often been issues between council and the mayor, things have reached a new level of animosity.

“Historically, there’s been tension between the City of Tampa mayor and council, I think you could say that, frequently, there is some continued on page 13

ocal political experts, a former Tampa mayor, and civic leaders are sounding off about the disruptive tension between Mayor Jane Castor’s administration and Tampa City Council.

The comments from local leaders come in the wake of former councilman John Dingfelder’s resignation over a public records lawsuit, and as Orlando Gudes faces allegations of creating a toxic workplace through caustic, inappropriate, language and behavior. Meanwhile, the mayor’s administration has been accused of practicing questionable political maneuvers against council, using the local media to do so.

“I have watched or covered City Hall since 1988 and have never seen this level of animosity from a mayor toward council members,” said Wayne Garcia, an award-winning reporter for the St. Petersburg Times, Tampa Tribune and Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. Garcia, Master Instructor at USF’s Zimmerman School of Advertising & Mass Communications, continued, saying that “the whole thing just looks horrible.”

“You have only the council members who have opposed the mayor come under this fire, and the private attorney involved shows up in both cases against two different council members, and shows up talking with the City Attorney on the side,” he said.

Former Councilman Dingfelder was forced to resign and not speak to the press as part of a public records lawsuit settlement in which City Attorney Gina Grimes refused to represent him, citing his breach of city rules. Soon after, CL discovered that Grimes used her personal cellphone to communicate with the attorney who sued Dingfelder, Ethan Loeb, and failed to maintain public records in the city’s files when she communicated with Loeb’s client, developer consultant Stephen Michelini.

Two weeks ago, a press conference was canceled on the spot by Grady C. Irvin Jr., the attorney who originally represented Gudes’ accuser. The next day, it was announced that the accuser switched to Loeb, who, according to his website, specializes in complex business litigation.

Garcia went on to refer to a presser last week, where Mayor Castor accused the local media of being inaccurate in its reporting, which led to a

Freedman said she would regularly discuss issues with council during her time as mayor.

Meanwhile, multiple Tampa City Council members have claimed that Castor rarely communicates with them, even about important issues.

“Civil discourse only occurs when people

have a level of trust. And the only way to build that is to do it quietly,” Freedman said.

While Castor’s administration has called for transparency and accountability from council, some have pointed out that there needs to be more of that from the administration itself.

Yvette Lewis, President of the NAACP Hillsborough County Branch, said she welcomes open talks with the mayor.

But I think what we seem to be seeing here is just a concerted effort by the administration to attack people and compromise their position on the city council.”

Tom agreed that it does seem to be the case, and added that, “It’s hard to defend some of the things that have come out regarding Gudes, and it looks like John Dingfelder was sloppy with his public records.”

The allegations against Gudes were left alone in 2020 by city staff, but were pursued again by the administration in August of 2021, the same month that Michelini’s public records request was submitted to Dingfelder.

CL contacted the city’s Communication Director Adam Smith, who questioned if the people who weighed in on this story were fully informed about Dingfelder and Gudes’ cases, writing, “Did you share with them the records the explain what happened with John Dingfelder and Orlando Gudes?”

“There is zero animosity from the mayor toward the city council, “ Smith continued in his email. “Zero. No one is responsible for scandals circling John Dingfelder and Orlando Gudes except for John Dingfelder and Orlando Gudes.”

Stephanie Poynor, President of Tampa Homeowners Association of Neighborhoods (THAN) says that communication and transparency issues from the administration are problems that need to be confronted. “City council is the red headed step child of the Mayor,” Poynor told CL. “They must ask for everything from the Mayor, and she seems to want no interaction with them. You must have give and take.

The Mayor only wants to give information, not take it, from the citizens or Tampa City Council.”

Poynor—who was named in Dingfelder’s lawsuit—also spoke out on Scherberger’s show, saying, “It’s really an attack on the neighborhoods, not just necessarily those city councilmen. Large developers have been in charge of the city for many, many years with no voice for the citizens in the neighborhoods.”

In February, when Castor said rent stabilization would kill development, CL found that her Tampa Strong PAC is over half funded by development interests.

Since 2019, Poynor has reached out to the mayor and her administration about neighborhood issues several times and said she’s never received a response.

“I think that people are human beings and will make mistakes,” Poynor said to city council last Thursday. “But when the pot is calling the kettle black, I have some issues with that.”

Meet Lynn Hurtak, your new Tampa city councilwoman.

W

hen Amanda Lynn Hurtak’s name was announced as Tampa’s newest city council member last Tuesday, it felt completely surreal for her. She was frozen with the realization for just a moment, before the media frenzy snapped her right back into reality. The news cameras surrounded her and she responded to an array of questions with the professionalism of a council member who has been at the job for years. On the inside, though, she still felt a bit like a deer in the headlights as she rapidly adjusted to her new role.

“All I could think at the moment they called my name was, ‘Wow, this really happened,’” Hurtak said.

She now represents all of Tampa in her District 3 at-large seat and is the only woman currently on council.

Born in Tampa at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital on July 1, 1977, Hurtak is the daughter of working class parents who named her after the Jimmy Buffet song, “There’s Something So Feminine About A Mandolin.” In her youth, she went by “Mandy”, but to her chagrin, people kept singing her the Barry Manilow song with the same title, so by middle school she had decided she wanted to go

Still fond of her parent’s given name, she has a mandolin hanging on the wall in her house in Seminole Heights, where she cut her teeth in local civic activism before also joining Tampa’s Charter Review Commission in 2019 and was appointed to the Variance Review Board after that. She’s the current Vice President of the Old Seminole Heights Neighborhood Association and is also involved with Tampa NOW, the League of Women Voters of Hillsborough County, and Tampa Bay Beagle Rescue.

Before returning to Tampa and getting involved in local groups and politics in 2015, Hurtak lived in Gainesville and attained a bachelor’s in political science and a master’s in elementary education. It was during college that she realized she wanted to work in public service.

At the University of Florida, she took a course called “The Politics of Poverty” and read, “Savage Inequalities: Children in America’s Schools” by Jonathan Kozol. It was a game changer and soon after, Hurtak was volunteering at nearby Idylwild Elementary.

She was 20 at the time, and an educator named Carrie Geiger, who is now principal of P.K. Yonge Developmental Research School in Gainesville, took Hurtak under her wing. “She was just amazing, she became a mentor to me,” Hurtak said. “She said, you’re really good at this, you should become a teacher.”

Hurtak worked as an aide and then a substitute teacher while putting herself through school before being hired full time in 2002 for around $36,000 a year. She was a proud member of the Alachua County Education Association, and a union representative at her school. “That experience really means a lot to me, and I look forward to hearing what local unions have to say,” Hurtak said.

After dedicating seven years of her life to teaching, she switched careers, went independent and became a technical editor for the U.S. Agency for International Development in 2010—she still picks up work for USAID editing reports and evaluations for food security, monitoring, evaluation and capacity building projects.

Being involved in large social groups wasn’t easy for Hurtak. She’s naturally an introvert, and her quiet hours at home are where she recharges. But when she was young, her father, Tom, used to encourage her engage with people on his business trips and when out in public. Her mother, Diane, was a social worker during her upbringing, who interacted with a wide intersection of people. This gave Lynn insight into communities beyond her own.

Family is also how she bonded with her husband, media consultant and nationally renowned journalist Tim Burke, who has also has a byline in

Hurtak added that this does not mean she is anti-police, but that in any organization, there are issues that need to be dealt with, for the health and well being of everyone in the community.

Hurtak is bringing all her progressive values with her to council, and they aren’t going to change now that she’s elected, she said.

But in a moment of vulnerability, she revealed a fear of hers as she takes the council seat. “I’m worried that people think that I’m coming to council with solutions to these issues in the city, but I don’t have all of them,” Hurtak said. “What I really want to do is listen to the community.”

In a year, the community will also tell Hurtak how they feel when she goes up for reelection. And there are important concerns from the citizens of Tampa, from the raging housing crisis, to transparency with the city’s development projects.

Hurtak’s appointment comes in the wake of former councilman John Dingfelder’s resignation over a public records lawsuit, and as Orlando Gudes faces allegations of creating a toxic workplace through caustic language and behavior.

Meanwhile, the mayor’s administration has been accused of shady political maneuvers against council. When asked about the chaotic politics going on, Hurtak said that she wants to stay focused on the big picture.

“I owe it to my colleagues and my constituents to focus on becoming the best I can be as a council member,” Hurtak said. “It is in my nature to do what I can to get to know people, get along with them on the areas I can, and to listen to people. Because they know what they need.”

The gathering was at a Howard Johnson off 50th Street in Tampa. “It was a primo, primo location,” Hurtak said, laughing. “Tim came up to me and we had a five minute conversation about baseball, and all sorts of other things.”

They stayed in touch, and when Hurtak needed to write her grandmother’s eulogy, Burke, a speech professor at the time, offered to help.

“There wasn’t a dry eye in the building, and now I’m my family’s eulogy person,” Hurtak said.

Burke drove up the weekend after to meet her in Gainesville, and while driving around, something hit her. “I just looked at him, and I remember thinking, ‘I could marry this man,”’ Hurtak said.

Five years later, on Dec. 12, 2012, they were hitched in New York. She and Burke flew Hurtak’s mother up there, her father had passed away the year before, and Burke’s family as well.

They chose not to marry in Florida because marriage equality didn’t exist at the time here; they wanted to wed in a place where anyone could honor their love legally. Along with being staunch supporters of the LGBTQ+ community and union advocates, they also stand behind the Black Lives Matter movement.

“We’re saying Black Lives Matter, because right now this is a community that has historically been discriminated against, not not only by police, not only by the city, not only by the government, not only by real estate,” Hurtak said.

“I mean, historically, there are a lot of marginalized communities. But that’s what we’re saying now, is, ‘Yes, I hear you, and I stand with you and I see what you’re saying.’”

St. Pete’s committee meets Thursday, April 14, at 1:30 p.m. to review the matter further. “We’ll discuss what’s possible,” Floyd told CL. “And what a program might look like.”

Last month, Mayor Welch agreed to meet with delegates from the People’s Council.

“It was a productive conversation in which we were able to share the progress we’ve already made, discuss our future and ongoing goals, and share ideas on additional, transformative action,” Welch told CL. “We believe success is best found through collaboration and have agreed to ongoing meetings with the group to remain inclusive of its needs, including by welcoming additional members to participate in conversations.”

Brother John Muhammad, of the People’s Council and a lead organizer with Florida Rising, was one of the delegates that met with Welch and spoke last week about that discussion.

“No longer do we want to have subject matter experts or researchers,” Muhammad said. “We want to have the people who are living this day in and day out at the table to make those decisions.”

Muhammad says Welch and his team agreed to another People’s Council meeting to plan the sit-in on Wednesday, April 20. The city sent the list of current and upcoming affordable housing projects: Delmar 745 will have 65-units for 30%-60% AMI incomes, and Skyway Lofts with 65-units for 30-80% AMI incomes. The Skyway Lofts answering machine says all applicant appointments are filled, but a waitlist is available.

ayor Ken Welch has detailed how St. Petersburg will distribute $34 million in ARPA funds. The breakdown comes after his March meeting with the People’s Council of St. Pete, which just wrapped its latest strategy meeting last Wednesday.

Two months ago, over a hundred residents rallied outside St. Petersburg City Hall and demanded rent control and a housing state of emergency. Two months before that, over 600 people signed and presented a petition to the City Council asking for substantive aid in the rapidly rising housing costs across the city.

Last week, about 70 people attended the People’s Council of St. Pete’s Wednesday meeting at Allendale United Methodist to discuss strategy. After the two-hour meeting, the group reached a consensus: residents unanimously voted for rent control and guaranteed housing.

And over 76% voted to conduct a sit-in in hopes that continued pressure on city leadership will produce more immediate results than they’ve seen thus far.

“People still have no idea we are going through these things,” St. Pete’s Stacy Rush said. “When we become their eyesore, that makes them do something.”

Rush was displaced earlier this year after her rent went from $600 to $1,300. She put her life into storage, staying with friends and family until she can find housing again.

After a presentation from legal in February, the Housing, Land Use, and Transportation committee decided that even giving residents the right to vote on rent control was too legally risky. In addition, the committee voted 3-1 against council member Richie Floyd’s motion to declare even a symbolic housing state of emergency.

“Just because they voted rent control down... doesn’t mean anything; the fight is still on,” Karla Correa with the St. Pete Tenants Union said.

“Everyone in this room has been part of inspiring a statewide movement for housing justice.”

In recent weeks, St. Pete City Council voted to allocate $34 million in ARPA funds for housing. CL asked Mayor Ken Welch how the city is spending those funds moving forward.

Welch said ARPA funds will be allocated as follows: • $20 million for affordable multi-family development. (Currently working on RFP)

“Skyway lofts had 1,800 applicants for 65 units,” Floyd told CL. “I’m not sure if those numbers are exact, but that’s what I’ve heard.”

CL contacted Skyway Lofts via email to confirm this and hasn’t heard back yet. The city says it’s upped down payment assistance for first-time homebuyers, home rehabilitation assistance, and developer incentives for affordable housing projects.

“We increased the amount of down payment assistance from $40,000 to $60,000 for those earning at or below 80% AMI, with a full loan forgiveness option after 10 years of continued occupancy in the home,” Welch told CL. “This puts homeownership within the reach of additional residents.”

Welch also told CL that the city expanded its South St. Pete CRA Developer Land Acquisition Incentive, giving up to $40,000 (up from $10,000) to developers with projects that target those at or below 120% AMI. And existing homeowner rehabilitation funds increased to $60,000 from $45,000 (with forgiveness for those at or below 80% AMI after 10 years).

“This encourages more affordable housing and will help build stock,” Welch told CL.

Two more affordable projects are underway: the Shores at 31st Street S and 26th Avenue with 51-units, and Jordan Park with a new 60-unit affordable housing building and renovation on 206 rental units. There’s also CRA-funded construction of 10 single-family homes at 12th Ave. S. and 16th St., sold to those at or below 80% AMI ($59,040 for a family of four). But even with more money from the city for renters, homeowners, potential homebuyers, and developers, those at Wednesday’s meeting say it still isn’t enough.

“I have applied for emergency assistance that could take six months to get,” resident Carolyn Ballinger said. “That’s just for emergency assistance.”

The next People’s Council meeting is Wednesday, April 20, location TBA, with a sitin in the works. As far as the People’s Council is concerned, the fight for emergency rent control is still in play. And how much would it cost the city to fight the legal battle for rent control if it meant housing for thousands, not a few hundred, currently at risk of losing their homes? “This movement is growing like a wildfire,” Correa said. “Because this emergency is not going away anytime soon without serious intervention.”

Hillsborough’s transit agency to bump pay for some.

ome Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART) employees will receive a pay bump of 5%. The news comes after a Creative Loafing Tampa Bay published a story about employees leaving the organization in high numbers. On March 28, CEO Adelee Le Grand sent a memo to the HART Board of Directors, advising them that some employees will receive the increase in pay.

“HART employees have worked tirelessly to keep our services operating for the Hillsborough County community,” Le Grand wrote. “This has been done while managing the stress associated with the impacts of a global pandemic historical increases in cost-of-living.”

Le Grand went on to write that, to provide some relief, all HART non-bargaining unit employees will receive the cost-of-living increase, which will be instituted retroactively starting from Jan. 1, 2022. The memo was sent three days after CL published a story which found that over 50 administrative level employees left HART over the past year under Le Grand’s leadership. Some employees claimed a toxic workplace, while Le Grand said HART is moving in a new, more efficient direction that is not for everyone.

County commissioners pointed to lack of funding, leading to less competitive pay for employees, as a reason for the exodus.

Union members, who are struggling with HART leadership to agree to a contract that includes higher pay, will not be included in the increase.

“To date, we are still actively negotiating the ATU Local 1593 and Teamsters Local Union No. 79 contracts,” Le Grand wrote. “Once approved by the union membership, the new contracts will be brought before the HART Board of Directors for approval. CL reached out to both unions involved in the current negotiations, and the Teamsters responded via email.

“I agree that HART is still technically in negotiations with Teamsters Local 79, because although we have reached a full and complete tentative agreement, there is clarification needed from the Employer on one issue before the Union will report that the tentative agreement has been ratified by our members,” wrote John Sholtes, Secretary-Treasurer, Business Agent and Director of Organizing. “Further, I agree that if our full tentative agreement is ratified by both the members and the HART Board as negotiated on 3/24/22, that a 5% increase for non-bargaining employees would be fair and equitable.”

Hillsborough County Commissioner and HART Board Member Mariella Smith said the pay increase offers help to employees who are facing increasing cost of living.

“I’m glad to see this is happening, I’m always advocating for higher wages in our area and in all the boards I sit on,” Smith told CL. She went on to say that with the area’s ongoing affordable housing crisis, the pay increase could help some who have seen their cost of living skyrocket over the past year.

Non-bargaining employees who are still in their probationary period will still receive an increase, but at 1.25%. Le Grand wrote that the costs of the increases, can be absorbed in the Board approved fiscal year 2022 budget.

“To ensure that we are providing transparency in our budgeting process, we are planning to present a fiscal year 2022 budget amendment to include American Rescue Plan funding and any projected increases associated with labor negotiations and other expenses,” Le Grand wrote. “You will hear more from me as we navigate many exciting developments and changes that fiscal year 2023 will bring.”

Old is new again It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world.

I

n Texas last week, a woman was arrested for murder and jailed on a $500,000 bond for taking medication to induce an abortion—something that is not a crime in Texas, although the state’s lawmakers have banned the sale or delivery of medications that terminate pregnancies.

In Oklahoma—where Texas women began obtaining abortions after Texas’ six-week ban kicked in—the legislature made providing an abortion a felony. If that proves a bridge too far for even this Supreme Court, Oklahoma will likely replicate Texas’ law, which allows vigilantes to sue anyone who helps a woman obtain an abortion after a fetal “heartbeat” is detected. So women will have to drive to Louisiana, Kansas, or New Mexico—where clinics are already full—and, at least in Louisiana and Kansas, it’s probably just a matter of time before Republican legislatures follow Texas’ lead.

And then there’s Alabama, which made it a felony for doctors to provide gender-affirming health care to people under 19. Gov. Kay Ivey, after giving the issue the rigorous consideration it deserved, justified signing the legislation thusly: “If the Good Lord made you a boy, you are a boy, and if he made you a girl, you are a girl.”

Ivey signed a second law replicating Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” legislation and banning trans kids from using school bathrooms that conform with their gender identities—reminiscent of the so-called “bathroom bill” that turned North Carolina into a national laughingstock in 2016.

(We’ll come back to that.)

Speaking of Florida, Gov. Ron DeSantis’ newest appointee to the state’s board of education, Esther Byrd—a QAnon lunatic who has defended the Proud Boys and Jan. 6 rioters—publicly congratulated a “whistleblowing” parent who complained about a high school teacher who wore a “Protect Trans Kids” T-shirt on Transgender Day of Visibility. Of course, DeSantis and his allies assured everyone that the state isn’t bullying LGBTQ kids but rather “protecting small children from the predations of adults,” so I suppose Byrd was simply pleased that the school district had strictly enforced its ban on T-shirt slogans.

Or maybe she, like DeSantis’ spokeswoman, believes the teacher is “probably a groomer.”

(We’ll come back to that, too.)

DeSantis can claim that the law doesn’t attack LGBTQ kids because its language is

imprecise. Take its most controversial provision: “Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.”

The law enables parents to sue school districts if they’re offended by what their child has heard.

In theory, it’s only supposed to prevent teachers from “encouraging” “inappropriate” conversations, but in practice, what counts as encouraging or inappropriate is anyone’s guess. A secondgrade math problem that mentions a same-sex family? That qualifies as “instruction on sexual orientation,” according to a bill sponsor. But what about a first-grade teacher who answers a student’s question about why another child has two dads? A fifth-grade teacher who tells the class that she has a wife? A ninth-grade history class that discusses the Stonewall riot? An AP English teacher who assigns a book with a trans character?

Who knows?

Winning lawsuits isn’t the goal. Vague laws like this are difficult to enforce. But they still intimidate educators into avoiding “controversial” subjects. So Republicans kept the law vague enough for DeSantis to score points with his base while criticizing Democrats and “woke corporations” for “overreacting” to efforts to protect kids from predators.

Which brings us back to DeSantis spokeswoman Christina Pushaw, who tweeted: “If you’re against the Anti-Grooming bill, you are probably a groomer or at least you don’t denounce the grooming of 4-8 year old children.”

She “explained” her line to Florida Politics: “There is no reason for 3- to 8-year-olds to learn about sex in school, and anyone who wants to teach kids that young about sex—particularly over parental objections—is creating an environment where grooming can easily occur. … Pedophiles groom kids by talking to them about sex.”

Notice how Pushaw casually equates sexual orientation with “sex”: Queers = perverts = predators. And here I thought Anita Bryant had been pied into obscurity 40-odd years ago.

But everything old is new again. The attacks on women’s rights have simmered for decades, waiting for a Supreme Court willing to play

Critical race theory is but another means of stoking white anxiety, like school busing but with less grounding in reality. The current attack on LGBTQ “instruction” in schools is a natural follow-up to critical race theory: Invent a problem, then create a solution that targets a marginalized group.

The new trans-people-as-bogeymen strategy first surfaced in North Carolina in 2016, a year after the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage. The legislature overrode Charlotte’s antidiscrimination ordinance and forbade trans people from using public restrooms that didn’t

conform to their gender identity, based on a myth that trans women are men who want to get pervy in ladies’ bathrooms.

HB 2’s passage led to national boycotts, latenight mockery, and ultimately, the Republican governor’s defeat.

Yet six years later, Alabama passed a similar law, and it barely merited mention. And during Kentaji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearing, Republicans made clear that they want the Supreme Court to revisit same-sex marriage.

Hell, maybe interracial marriage, too.

Progress isn’t a straight line. Rights aren’t always permanent. Don’t get comfortable; they’re just getting started. This train is rolling, and no one knows where it will end up. Populists will always need another target.

Boston Manor w/Trash Boat/Higher Power/Anxious Warped Tour alum Boston Manor released one of its newer songs at a really strange time. “Everything Is Ordinary,” the lead single off of the U.K. group’s latest album Glue was released in February 2020.

That was a time when you could still tell yourself that everything seemed normal. One pandemic later, with a new, more appropriately-titled LP (Desperate Times Desperate Pleasures) under its belt, Boston Manor is back in Tampa Bay for the first time since its 2017 show at Transitions Art Gallery. Joining the group are fellow British pop-punk groups Trash Boat and Higher Power, as well as Anxious, which was just at the same venue last month, opening for Knuckle Puck and Hot Mulligan. In a series of Facebook videos, the multiple BOTB-winner with a siren’s vocal has “documented” her drummer Charlie Douglas Wells booking a show, in full “The Office” style. In reality, Geri X’s first show back since COVID-19 hit takes place this week in Ybor City, and is sandwiched between a set from author-turned-musician Brett Newski, and Goodnight Neverland songwriter Kerry Courtney, who also appeared on Season 15 of “American Idol.” (Crowbar, Ybor City) Kateri and James If a jazzy voice from Nashville is your bag, you might wanna head down to Hooch and Hive tonight. When Kateri Farrell picks up her flute–be it solo or with Jason Eskridge at her side—your world freezes and the walls come down.

When she’s not with Eskridge, Kateri is half of soul-jazz duo Kateri and James, alongside James Sonnentag, a multi-instrumentalist.

He doesn’t sing a great deal, but perhaps Kateri will, at some point, step away from the mic and perform something masterful, while James steps away from the keyboards and onto the mic. There’s no cover for this show, but it wouldn’t hurt to buy a bunch of merch.

Kateri’s working on her first studio album as a solo artist, and we do want a record from the duo at some point, right? (Hooch and Hive, Tampa) Martina McBride It’s outrageous that of all 14 times that country singer-songwriter Martina McBride has been nominated for a Grammy, not one little gramophone has made it onto her mantle. It’s been a minute since we’ve been graced with new music from the 55-year-old country star, but the good news is that we’re about to witness her second Tampa Bay area performance in six months. Right before Christmas, she

took the Mahaffey Theater stage for her “Joy of Christmas” tour, as one does. Only four months later, McBride is about to hit Tampa’s newish Hard Rock Events Center for the first time. Bon Jovi Five years ago, Bon Jovi famously (locally speaking) played to a packed Valentine’s Day crowd at Amalie Arena.

Because why go to a fancy dinner when Mr. “Bed Of Roses” is in town? This time around, it isn’t V-day, but to kick off Easter weekend, the group that graced us with “Livin’ On A Prayer” is back in town with music birthed during the pandemic. And we give the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted group major props for continuing on its tradition of having a local band open the show. This year’s opener is still unknown, but with Tampa

Bay’s music scene, you just can’t go wrong.

(Amalie Arena, Tampa) C Don Felder If you caught the Eagles’ return to Tampa in late February, you may have noticed that the guy holding the doubleneck guitar on “Hotel California” was not Don Felder, who originally dueled Joe Walsh on the song’s guitar solo. The 74-year-old is not with the band anymore, but he’s still going strong, from what we can tell. Felder will showcase an Eagles greatest hits set in downtown Clearwater, along with a smattering of tunes from his solo career. And if you want to know why Felder was axed from the band in 2001…well, why don’t you ask Don Henley? (Bilheimer Capitol Theatre, Clearwater) C Evan French A veteran of No Vacancy Media, local “music troubadour” French just released his debut album, Back To Square One, in the summer of 2020, right after Florida came out of its very brief lockdown.

French’s Dylan influence leaks throughout the record, and it’s a dream of his to open

for the Nobel-laureate. In the meantime, he performs at Studio Public House in Grand Central this week, where Pom Pom’s used to stand. Grab a sammy and give Evan your undivided support. He just wantsta play music. (Studio Public House, St. Petersburg) Mike Love w/Cas Haley/Brett Wilson The Hawaiian-born singer who unfortunately shares a name with one of rock and roll’s biggest douchebags is actually a reggae artist.

Love has a sound that crosses reggae and Rastafari, and is currently in the process of recording his fourth album, set for release at some point in 2022. He’s a mainstay at reggae festivals around the globe, and almost exactly a month after missing Reggae Rise Up— where he appears to have made his Florida debut in 2018—the Oahu-born crooner is bringing his full band to show St. Pete the kine of good time his Hawaii fans already know.

Allen–on the heels of releasing a new record, True Orleans 2—just kicked off his 2022 run of shows in Atlanta. Whether he’s playing for Barack Obama at Governor’s Ball, or running a gun exchange program—in which children can turn in a weapon of sorts and be rewarded with a free trumpet—music is never off of his mind. Before taking on the rest of the U.S. this year, Allen has a series of shows in Florida, having already rocked St. Augustine last week. His penultimate Sunshine State show takes place at Hooch & Hive before he spends his Easter Sunday Eve all the way down in Sanibel. (Hooch and Hive, Tampa)

Todrick Hall Hall finally concluded his “Haus Party” trilogy of EPs last February, and only months later, he unveiled his first full-length studio album since 2018. Femuline features contributions from the legendary voice of Chaka Khan, and fellow LGBT activists of Todrick’s, Brandy and Ts Madison. Todrick is back in Tampa Bay this week for what appears to be the first time since his Straight Outta Oz tour in 2016. This time around, the historic Tampa Theatre hosts this absolute queen, once told by Simon Cowell that he’d “never amount to anything beyond a Broadway actor.” It looks like Cowell can kiss Todrick’s femuline ass, because tickets are going quickly. Claptone Eternally masked German DJ Claptone is one of the club scene’s most

enigmatic figures. Aside from a handful of studio albums, including one just released, there isn’t much background on the gold-beaked DJ. Although, he’s done remixes of Dua Lipa and Elton John, and has teamed up with the likes of Barry Manilow, Seal, and Nathan Nicholson. Without any of these names present, Claptone is doing a very limited run of U.S. shows this year, and his spring trio of shows closes this weekend. (The Ritz, Ybor City) Push Button Rocket In January, Tampa Bay’s newest rock and roll four-piece, Push Button Rocket was supposed to make its debut at Skipper’s. Amity even named its latest full EP, Somewhere Beyond The Blue, after a message sent to Kennedy before his death. Bisexual female in an open/monogamish relationship with a heterosexual male. My partner and I have some friends in the swinging lifestyle that invite us to parties and group sex events. They recently picked up gonorrhea at a hotel takeover and did not find out until after hosting 20 people at a sex party. So, the group is now dealing with a gonorrhea outbreak—mostly oral infections, as we are all very diligent about condom usage for PIV. We are being treated, but I am pretty upset. The thing that bothers me most is how nonchalant they are being about the situation! One person even called this an “inconvenience” and compared it to “the common cold.” (WTF?) While some STIs are easily treated, gonorrhea is treatment-resistant and something like herpes, HPV, or HIV would obviously be a very big deal and permanent. They don’t plan to retest after getting their shots and are already planning group sex events in the next few weeks, which I find concerning. I don’t think I’m comfortable engaging with their group if they are not going to take things like an STI outbreak more seriously. So, my questions are: 1. My test came back negative (my partner was positive) but shouldn’t they ALL retest after treatment? Especially if it is an STI known to be antibiotic resistant?

2. Am I overreacting or being unfair to our friends? Is this just part of the swinging lifestyle territory that we all have to accept?

3. If we decide to not engage with the group because of their attitude towards STIs, how do we get back into the lifestyle? We are afraid we will lose access to events and people in the scene, as these friends have introduced us to everyone we know in the scene and have gotten us access to all the events we’ve been to before.—Completely Lost About Panicking

“Gonorrhea can still be easily treated with a single injection of an antibiotic called ceftriaxone, and there is almost no resistance to that drug in North America,” said Dr. Park. Which is not to say gonorrhea is no big deal or that things couldn’t get worse. “Those of us in the business of STI research do worry about an outbreak of multidrug resistant gonorrhea, but luckily it hasn’t yet happened,” said Dr. Park. “The bad news is that over half of the gonorrhea strains circulating in the US are resistant to at least one class of antibiotics, and one-in-five are resistant to two or more classes of antibiotics. We currently only have one antibiotic in the U.S. that can reliably treat gonorrhea. But there is one new antibiotic in late-stage clinical trials, although nothing is immediately available if standard treatment fails.”

Which it hasn’t, CLAP, at least not yet.

So, that means you and partner and all your sex friends—if you get treated and tested again in two weeks—can emerge from this experience gonorrhea-free.

2. Your friends are underreacting—gonorrhea shouldn’t be compared to the common cold—but you’re overreacting. While contracting an STI isn’t anyone’s goal at a sex party, whenever you’re having sex outside the bounds of a committed and sexually exclusive relationship, CLAP, you’re running the risk of contracting or spreading an STI. And since people in monogamous relationships cheat, there’s no guarantee you won’t contract an STI in a committed and sexually-exclusive-intheory-but-not-in-practice relationship either. The only way to eliminate your risk of contracting an STI is to never have sex with anyone ever again, CLAP, including your partner.

If the pleasures of attending sex parties aren’t worth the increased risk of contracting an STI, you shouldn’t attend sex parties. You could still have an open relationship, CLAP, but you’ll have to be a lot choosier and make the other people you fuck jump through a lot of hoops. You can ask all prospective new partners to get screened for STIs, provide you with proof of their negative tests, and then refrain from fucking anyone else for a few weeks before meeting up with you. Not everyone is going to wanna jump through those hoops, CLAP, which

And while she thinks your sex friends who aren’t getting a follow-up test after being treated for oral gonorrhea are making a mistake, she explained that you’re wrong about gonorrhea.

I regret to inform you that the people you wanna fuck could lie to you about abstaining from fucking other people after testing and before meeting up to fuck you a few weeks later, just like people in monogamous relationships sometimes lie. So, to ensure your other partners aren’t fucking other people during that time, CLAP, you’ll have to lock them in your basement.

3. Swapping hosts—going to sex parties and swinger events organized by people who haven’t already given you gonorrhea—isn’t the magic amulet you seem to think it is. Anyone who regularly goes to sex parties to fuck 20 other people is going to be exposed to HPV on a regular basis and is essentially volunteering to be exposed to and very likely contract herpes. (If you aren’t already vaccinated against HPV, get vaccinated.) If you’re using condoms religiously and correctly, and there’s no man-on-man action at these parties (and there usually isn’t at events organized by and for opposite-sex couples), your risk of contracting HIV is very, very low. You can reduce your risk of contracting gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia orally by using condoms and

latex barriers for cunnilingus and anilingus, but STIs that are passed through skin-to-skin contact are almost unavoidable when 20 people pile into a living room with a dozen mattresses spread out on the floor.

If you can’t live with those risks or you’re going to fall to pieces if or when you contract another STI, CLAP, sex parties aren’t for you.

At that moment, CONCERNED, the word “faggot” is not an insult. It’s an affirmation.

That said, not all gay men enjoy degrading dirty talk, and the fact that some gay men get off on tossing the word “faggot” around during sex does not give straight people license to use it.

But if you’re hearing the f-word every time your roommate has a guy over, CONCERNED, you can rest assured: it’s not happening by accident.

The men calling your roommate a faggot when they’re fucking his face aren’t suddenly blurting that word out. They’re saying it at your roommate’s request.
