Critics provide a key role in the artistic ecology of a healthy and thriving community. It is their job to educate, support, and at times question the product on stage, all with the goal of pushing the region to new levels.

That is why the recent words from the Creative Loafing critic in his review of “School Girls; or, the African Mean Girls Play” were not only shocking but deeply offensive in their nature.

We will not quote the critic’s review. However, to summarize, he found the casting choice for one of our lead roles to be questionable and disruptive to the experience through the lens, as a white man, of his standard of what beauty is. He went to great lengths to inform readers that having an African American woman with curves play a young woman that would go on to win a beauty pageant was not only historically inaccurate, but then proceeded to assume

that audiences would not be able to connect to the story because of this.

Here at American Stage it is clear that the critic’s words were written from a place of misogyny, and body-shaming. He uses historical examples in an attempt to defend his argument, while his argument itself is rooted in a disgraceful history of white men qualifying the beauty of African American women as a means of oppression and control. If the critic had taken a moment to look beyond his perspective of history from a caucasian, western point of view he might have come to understand how our casting reflects the world we live in both then and now.

The review ends by the critic using a line from the show that a duplicitous character uses as justification for using deceptive and underhand methods to win at all costs and correlates it with the present chance of the United States Supreme Court having its first African American woman on the bench. He

makes it clear that a historical moment in our nation’s history and the highest honor bestowed upon an African American woman who has worked honorably for this opportunity comes down to dishonest methods and a selfish need to be seen.

For us at American Stage this was a sad realization that although the theatre may be progressing to a more educated and inclusive space, Creative Loafing has actively made the decision not to. It is 2022 and we as a nation know better and are doing better, as the critic himself stated. ound up your pumpkin and honey bunny because a re-creation of the “Pulp Fiction” soundtrack is going down on Thursday as part of the “Reel Deal Thursday” series at Crowbar. The soundtrack for Quentin Tarantino’s classic 1994 film is a surf-rock and ‘70s soul gem, so promoter MNE Presents has tapped a stacked lineup of local talent to help start the concert at 10 a.m. after the movie screens at 7 p.m.

King State’s new St. Pete facility opens next month.

“You can it here, you can store it here, you can brew it here—you can do it all,” McTague tells CL in a phone call. “We can really be an incubator or expansion model for anyone who really fits the mold.”

Young and McTague are looking to work with anyone who boasts the Brutalist ethos of straightforward, good beer. Although no official deals have been made and no affiliated breweries have been confirmed (besides Flying Boat which will continue to brew in the same building,) both Young and McTague say that they’re looking to make long term relationships with new tenants (the facility can host as many as five or six at a time). Some Tampa-based breweries that they are interested in working with are Woven Water

rutalist art and architecture rose to prominence in the '50s for its bare-boned, geometric style. King State owners Nate Young and Tim McTague will apply that same straightforward methodology to their new St. Petersburg contract brewing facility and taproom that shares a name with the minimalist-inspired era. The Brutalist and its taproom counterpart the Temple of Beer will soft open on March 10 during the very first King State Lagerfest—a new Tampa Bay Beer Week heavy hitter that will be the first opportunity to taste Brutalist’s first beers.

Flying Boat Brewery had its last day at 1776 11th Ave. N on Jan. 30, before the somewhat seamless transition begins. Although the backto-back Brutalist and Lagerfest announcements seem like a mark of exponential growth for the Tampa-based roaster, brewery, and brick-andmortar cafe Young and McTague tell Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that it all feels like a homecoming in a sense since brewer Aric Parker has been brewing King State beer at Flying Boat for almost three years now.

“We have King State beer in Flying Boat’s tanks now, and come Feb. 1, they will just become our tanks,” Young says. “Flying Boat is where we were able to grow into the brand we are now.

The Brutalist will be able to brew as much KS beer as we need, but the goal long term is to add enough tank space to provide a full service to other breweries, in the same way we’ve been helped by others.”

Parker was recently joined by Vinny Giusto, who’s known for his brewing work at Tampa Heights-based Hidden Springs Ale Works. The dynamic duo will “touch every drop of beer coming out of Brutalist,” according to Young and McTague.

Although the Brutalist will be associated with King State itself—with KS beer in the tanks and its coffee roastery making the move to the new St. Pete headquarters—the multifaceted contract brewing facility will serve a niche need in the Tampa Bay boutique beer community, completely separate from the KS brand. A full counter-pressure canning line will be installed in May, an aspect that both owners think will set Brutalist apart from its counterparts in the Bay area.

While expansion and build out happens on the backend of the brewing facility—with over 90 new barrels already installed—the customerfacing tap room will also experience a facelift, again inspired by the Brutalist era of design.

The Temple of Beer’s aesthetic will be simple, yet inviting, and definitely won’t distract customers from the star of the entire Brutalist model—really great beer.

In-house beer from the Brutalist, King State, Flying Boat and other contract brewers will occupy the rotating 20 beer tap list at the Temple of Beer. And although there will be some sort of food element, the taproom itself won’t have a kitchen, and the Flying Boat tradition of having semi-permanent food trucks might start again someday soon.

Although The Brutalist and the Temple of Beer are slated to soft open during King State’s Lagerfest in early March, the duo understands that not all of the details will be hammered out by then.

Alongside King State’s in-house brews and the beer of tenants, a Brutalist beer will also be made at the new facility. “The idea of stripping everything down to the very raw elements will be the methodology for the brewing side of the Brutalist,” McTague shares with CL. “It’ll be straightforward single hop and single malt beer that doesn’t necessarily fit the KS brand.”

After Lagerfest, the Brutalist will have an official grand opening event that will be announced via Instagram (@thebrutalist.beer). And in terms of the highly-anticipated King State Lagerfest, it won’t be the over-the-top debut you may be expecting. The exclusive beers showcased will be affordable and straightforward.

“A lot of Beer Week events have live entertainment and food trucks, and we are going to do a little bit of that,” Young shares. “But Lagerfest will really be a return to the Brutalist

ethos—with a focus on the brewers and their killer beer.”

Alongside exclusive merchandise, Lagerfest will feature many collaborations with other small-batch breweries. The KS owners teamed up with beer event veteran Kris Marino, known for his Miami beer fest “Free the Whales,” to create the unique celebration that is Lagerfest.

“Every day the lineup is getting cooler and cooler. There are breweries that we’ve looked up to since the beginning who are part of it,” McTague says. As of Feb. 21, two dozen breweries are on the lineup, including BarrieHaus, Zydeco Brew Werks, Good Word Brewing, Magnanimous and others.

Although patrons of Flying Boat will miss its 11th Ave. N location, Young and McTague want to reassure the surrounding St. Pete community that the neighborhood-feel isn’t going anywhere.

While their loyal customers can still sip on their brews at the Temple of Beer, Flying Boat is working on opening another brick-and-mortar somewhere else in the greater Tampa Bay area.

“We like that Brutalist is in a neighborhood in the same way that King State is in a neighborhood—that’s what we love about it,” McTague says. “We hope the community values us as much as we value them. It’s honestly going to be just an easy transition.”

And speaking of easy transitions, Young and McTague—who also play in popular hard-rock bands, Anberlin and Underoath,respectively— are just as surprised that the King State brand has exponentially expanded since the debut of its cafe in 2019. Taking away the COVID years, King State is only about nine months old. Even with this major delve into the world of production and facility management, the owners have not expanded their investor pool at all.

“At this point, we have all of our original investors, which are mostly our friends, family, and some people we know from the music industry,” McTague says. “We haven’t really needed to branch out beyond that. There’s no major players or real estate money coming in.”

Both Young and McTague credit King State’s success to the strong relationships they’ve made with collaborators and loyal customer base.

“There’s been a lot of ebbing and flowing and dodging and weaving, but our relationships have really led us here,” Young says. “It’s amazing to be in this spot and I really credit our entire team. It’s been a wild couple of years.”

“To be able to grow this much during a pandemic is really rare, but amazing,” McTague noted.

From educational sessions that delve into the science and culture of brewing, to King State’s St. Pete debut of Brutalist Brewing—every type of beer will be showcased at this week-long celebration.

Tampa City Council reverses course to adopt ‘tenants bill of rights.’

ampa City Council’s journey to passing the “tenant’s bill of rights” had its ups and downs.

In January, council voted 6-1 to move the ordinance past the first reading, with only Charlie Miranda voting against it. But then, on Feb. 3, council flipped during second reading and voted 4-2 against the ordinance, with only councilman Orlando Gudes and Guido Maniscalco voting in favor of the ordinance. But on Feb. 17, they voted unanimously to approve it.

During the meeting, several councilmen said that the flip-flopping had left their constituents wondering why they were wavering on basic renter’s rights.

The ordinance calls on Tampa landlords to provide tenants with a notice of their housing rights and a list of tenant assistance resources, should they so need them. And just like a nearly identical resolution Hillsborough

County commissioners passed 5-1 last year, the city’s bill would have also prohibited landlords from discriminating against renters who use Section 8 vouchers.

The assistance is most often used by lowincome families, disabled and elderly people—the most vulnerable of Tampa’s residents. The government support is often the barrier between those vulnerable people and homelessness.

Between the initial approval and the subsequent denial of the ordinance earlier this month, Creative Loafing Tampa Bay discovered that landlords and lawyers had reached out to council about the ordinance. One email in city council records from a local attorney advised them against passing the bill.

But in the end, council voted to move the ordinance forward, with all seven councilmen voting yes.

Viera had pushed to bring back the ordinance back before council after it was denied earlier this month when he was absent from council, attending to personal matters “We have a housing crisis right now,” Viera said. “This is step one that we can do in terms of policy, to make housing more accessible to people.”

John Dingfelder, who was previously one of the most vocal opponents of the ordinance, had a change of heart during the meeting, saying that the city might get pushback from landlords, but that it’s worth it to protect renters.

“I’ll support this tenant’s bill of rights and will go along with the county, we’ll see how it goes,” Dingfelders said. “But it’s such a drop in the bucket. We have to do a better job on all these other areas before we can start patting ourselves on the back.”

For Dingfelder, the other areas that need addressing include tackling the city’s need for housing that more people can access by expediting permits, fee waivers, and having more flexibility and density of affordable housing.

Gudes, who had originally brought the ordinance to council for its first reading, said that

many people are going “transient” in Tampa, and that the ordinance will help get things going to protect Tampa renters as the housing crisis rages on.

“People are hungry about this. They’re adamant about it,” Gudes said. “And I don’t think it’s going to hurt people in different communities.”

By different communities, Gudes meant landlords who might be affected by the ordinance. Dingfelder had several times mentioned “mom and pop” landlords, who would have to deal with the ordinance’s rules. But in the end, just about all councilmen came to the conclusion that protecting Tampa’s most vulnerable residents was the right thing to do.

After the vote, Viera told CL that he was thrilled to see the ordinance pass unanimously, “Sometimes, a second look will yield better results,” he said.

He said that the anti-discrimination aspect of the bill is important to addressing what all of council agrees is an ongoing housing crisis.

“During this time of economic dislocation, the people are watching and I am glad that all council members, all of whom have good hearts on this issue, voted yes. It made right a wrong.”

Tensions rising

St. Pete City Council skirts rent control, but activists say they want it now.

ver a hundred citizens, maybe more, crowded outside St. Petersburg’s City Hall last Thursday night demanding “rent control now,” while declaring that “housing is a human right.”

The mass demonstration, organized by the People’s Council of St. Petersburg, came after residents voted to escalate cries for rent control amid rising rental costs.

More vigil than protest, locals like Carolyn Ballinger shared stories in hopes someone inside city hall might help. Ballinger, who’s disabled, her disabled daughter and 5-year-old granddaughter received a notice of non-renewal for their rental four days before Christmas last year.

Their income is $50-$75 too much to qualify for rental vouchers recently motioned for by city council from the American Rescue Plan Act, designated for those making 60% AMI or below (around $60,000). But Ballinger’s family doesn’t make enough to get into regular housing costing close to $1,800 a month (which requires proof of income at three times that amount) either.

“We’re stuck making too much for affordable housing,” Ballinger said, “and not enough for regular housing.”

She, like many in St. Pete, are left with nowhere to go and no city-funded programs to help those caught in-between. That’s why she’s speaking up for the city’s seniors, folks on disability, and workers that find themselves struggling with stagnant wages and rising housing costs.

“If we have no homes, they have no services,” Ballinger said. “They get to clean their own toilets. They get to cut their own lawns. Because we are the people that keep the city running.”

Tangela Butler has worked as school bus driver in Pinellas County Schools for over 17 years. Last month, Butler spoke about being on the brink of homelessness despite working full-time. She’s since found housing for an increased $500 a month in rent from her previous home. She got a raise last year, 50-cents an hour, which isn’t enough to cover the raised rent but she’s grateful to have found something.

“I joined this fight when I found myself in the struggle as well,” Butler said. “It’s ridiculous how many children are homeless, I stop my bus and I watch kids walk through the gates of motels because that’s where they have to stay.

They don’t have a home.”

Butler runs the Renters Lives Matter Facebook page, where many in the area tell their stories. She says single moms on Section 8 housing are losing their certificates when they’re only given three months to use them.

“These women have waited on these lists for years,” Butler said. “They finally get their voucher and they get kicked off because they can’t find a place.”

Voices calling for homes could be heard by the City Council inside city hall chambers, during the council’s weekly meeting. Citing legal concerns, last week’s Housing, Land Use, and Transportation Committee voted down a motion by council member Richie Floyd to declare a housing state of emergency for consideration by the full council.

Nick Carey, organizer with Faith in Florida and People’s Council of St. Petersburg, was in city hall and spoke to the council about the

council members Ed Montanari, Gina Driscoll and Brandi Gabbard.

“They decided with their vote not to name this the emergency that it is,” Oliver said.

“Shame on them. Anytime we hear electeds tell us, ‘that goes too far,’ it’s always the electeds that benefit from the status quo staying the same.”

Members of the People’s Council ultimately voted to escalate if the city doesn’t take action before their next meeting. If St. Pete’s real estate fox continues to guard the affordable housing hen house, citizens plan to respond accordingly. The People’s Council gathered signatures from citizens willing to occupy a tent city on city hall’s steps, knowing the risk of arrest. For many, arrest is a lesser risk than sitting and waiting for St. Pete’s leadership to act on the housing crisis.

“We are outside demonstrating because we’ve petitioned our government by every means we know how to and we need help now,” Carey said Thursday. “The people outside right now need to know what the plan is to stop them from being displaced.”

Council didn’t discuss Carey’s comments or even acknowledge the residents gathered outside. Instead, they moved on, wishing council member Deborah Figgs-Sanders a happy birthday before adjourning for the night. Floyd, for his part, did step outside city hall after the meeting to speak with protesters.

Report: Tampa renters spend 42% of income on rent.

ampa is the fourth worst city in the U.S. when it comes to changes in renting affordability, according to a recent Online Mortgage Advisor study.

The “2022 Priced Out Property” report analyzed purchase data in 218 cities around the world and rental data in 345 cities. The study compared each city’s average monthly net salary to the average rental cost of a one-bedroom apartment in a city center between 2017 and 2021.

The report found that in that time period, Tampa’s rental affordability worsened by 5.2%, growing from 36% to 42%.

Only Boise (21.7%) Reno (9.5%) and Milwaukee (6.2%) saw more dramatic rises.

The findings display the severity of being rent burdened, which according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, happens when over 30% of income is spent on rent.

“Severely cost burdened poor households are more likely than other renters to sacrifice other necessities like healthy food and healthcare to pay the rent, and to experience unstable housing situations like evictions,” the Coalition wrote.

Additionally, the report compared the difference in the square-footage that a person earning the average annual net salary in each city could afford to buy in 2021 compared to 2017. For this, the study compared the average price of one square foot of an apartment in a city center to the average annual salary in those years.

Tampa ranked ninth, with buyers able to afford 15 less square feet in 2021 than they could in 2017, dropping from 54.4 to 39.6 square feet. So, yeah, say bye to that big closet for now, Tampeños.

Jacksonville—where someone on an average annual salary can afford 40 square feet less in those years—was the only other Florida city to appear in the ranking, coming in at no. 3.

On the flip side, Jacksonville saw a positive change when it came to renting. Renters only spent 26% of their salary on rent in 2021, compared to 37% in 2017—a decrease of 11%.

The worst two cities in the square-footage findings were Cleveland and Oklahoma with a 63 and 55.5 square foot difference.

Despite needing council approval, a controversial pick for police chief has been running TPD since Feb. 8.

t last Thursday’s City Council meeting, Mayor Castor’s Chief of Staff John Bennett attempted to address widespread concerns over police chief Mary O’Connor, who was selected by Castor on Feb. 8 but has yet to be confirmed by council members. But by the end, several councilmen were unconvinced, and more concerns were raised.

During the meeting, Bennett said that O’Connor has been running the Tampa Police Department (TPD) since Castor hosted a press conference with her on Feb. 8, despite a critical lack of support from council and the community.

Since O’Connor’s appointment, questions have swirled around the choice; several councilmen said their phones haven’t stopped ringing and their email inboxes have been flooded since the nomination, with constituents upset about the selection.

A lot of people wanted Ruben “Butch” Delgado, Tampa’s former interim police chief to get the job, others are concerned about O’Connor’s past felony arrest for assault on a fellow law enforcement officer. Some who spoke at during public section brought up O’Connor’s involvement in the controversial policing program “biking while Black” when she served on the force before she retired in 2016.

But despite the citywide outcry, Bennett told council that O’Connor started running the department since early this month. Gudes had asked Bennett who was currently running the day-to-day operations of TPD, because he and other council members had not been informed.

“It’s Mary O’Connor. She was hired on February 8,” Bennett said.

At the Feb. 8 press conference Castor claimed that council still had to approve O’Connor, and that, “she could start as early as next week,” not indicating that O’Connor had started the job that day. During his comments on Castor’s chief selection, Gudes highlighted problems with the process. “We can’t sugarcoat what this is,” said Gudes. “We have a city in chaos right now... people are upset about the process.”

When Castor appointed O’Connor as chief, the councilmen said that none of them had yet met with her. They only got the opportunity after the mayor selected—and hired—her.

Bennett and City Attorney Gina Grimes explained that city charter says the mayor has 90 days from Feb. 8 to submit O’Connor as chief to council; after the submission council has 15 days to vote on her. In an email to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay, City of Tampa Communications Director Adam Smith there’s “no rush” on submitting O’Connor as Castor’s

pick but that “the confirmation may be next week.” But without any concrete date for submission, O’Connor could potentially spend more than 100 days running the department before a vote on her confirmation happens.

Since the conference, all of the councilmen have met her, with different takes on their meetings.

But councilmen Joe Citro, Guido Maniscalco and Bill Carlson were all explicit about a lack of community support for the chief.

“I just met the candidate a couple days ago she was very nice, experienced, very direct. If the

he doesn’t have a preference either way. He wrapped up his comments by saying the administration shouldn’t try to sell the community, and should instead respect the concerns. “My recommendation is, instead of selling the public and forcing the public to agree with a certain candidate, talk to the public but if ultimately they’re not convinced pick a different candidate,” Carlson said.

Councilman Viera reiterated that he, along with a lot of his constituents wanted Delgado.

But he added that he met O’Connor and considered her a “very nice woman.” Still, he suggested

t’s one hell of a time to live in Tampa Bay. Over the course of the pandemic, countless people have relocated to our neck of the woods to either work remote or leave their jobs for something better altogether. While Gasparilla Music Festival (GMF) lifers will come flocking to downtown for the 11th straight year, there will undoubtedly be some in the crowd who’re experiencing Tampa’s premier multi-genre, homegrown, 100% independent-as-fuck, and driven-by-volunteers nonprofit music festival.

With that in mind, Creative Loafing Tampa Bay simply wanted to welcome newcomers and time-tested GMF-ers to one of the live music calendar’s best weekends by running down 26 things to know about the party. We can’t wait to be in the park with you all.

remixed fall version of GMF was an exception, but every year has featured a gospel choir opening the mainstage on Saturday. You don’t have to believe in a higher being to be overwhelmed by the power of a couple dozen voices—always backed by the best musicians in Tampa Bay—singing praise classics.

Hip-hop Since its inception, GMF has embraced the local hip-hop scene, and over the last five or six years sets in the Kiley Gardens amphitheater have made legends of rappers like Dynasty, Mike Mass, Queenofex and Pusha Preme. This year is no different, and while Orlando producer Kaelin Ellis (Lipe Fiasco) provides one hell of a warmup on Friday, all eyes will be on Tampa expat Vinny Virgo and Wave Theory rapper K.III who play in the amphitheater and Tibbetts’ Corner, respectively, on Saturday. Bonus points if you get to the Tibetts’ on Friday to see what GMF alum Sam E. Hues has in store for his return to the festival. And if you’re trying to get absolutely lit, catch Orlando collective Seeyousoon playing on Friday, too.

International Talent buyers have never been afraid to pepper the lineup with sounds from outside the U.S., and this year is no exception. Cimafunk is an Afro-Cuban rock star who would’ve made the folks at Ybor City’s Sociedad La Union Marti Maceo proud, and his sound brings rhythms of the Caribbean to fans who’ve long-known what critics are starting to discover (Cimafunk’s 2021 sophomore LP El Alimento was ranked no. 3 Best Spanish-Language and Bilingual Albums of 2021 by Rolling Stone, listed on NPR’s Best Latin Music list that year and topped the Latin Music favorites in French newspaper LaMonde).

And while Cha Wa calls New Orleans home, its Grammy-nominated, brass and Mardi Gras aesthetic feels like it’s from another planet.

Kids fest Children 12 and under get in free at GMF, and after a scaled back Kids Fest last fall, 2022 sees the return of a more full-blown version featuring a graffiti wall, tie-dye station, plus Sunday performances and appearance from Disney+’s Imagination Movers (1:45 p.m.) and the Rays’ DJ Kitty (2:30 p.m.) Nearby will be art installations from the Crab Devil crew. Prudes, be aware that beer and liquor are part of the equation at GMF, so folks get more loose as the sun crawls across the sky. “ …mid afternoon to evening, it is not recommended for young children. There also may be some music with profanities during those times,” GMF writes online.

Locals When it comes to booking a multi-genre spread of the best acts that live in Tampa Bay (and sometimes just beyond in nearby parts of Florida), GMF has no rival. Since the first year when locals carried the load, to this weekend when they’re scheduled next to some big national names, your neighbors are the best reason to always come to the festival.

CL’s mentioned a few of its favorites in this guide, but others you should try to catch include psychsurf band The Venus (Sunday), feel good funk and soul trio Treis & Friends (Friday), “Voice” contestant and bonafide Dover-born country star Kenzie Wheeler (Sunday), unapologetic pop songwriter Camille Trust (Friday) and perennial Americana favorite Have Gun, Will Travel appearing Saturday in support of a new single “Buyer’s Remorse.”

Ortrotasce It’s not everyday you see Nic Hamersly playing outside of The Bends or Emerald Bar, but the analog-loving producer and composer heads over the bridge to play his beautiful brand of dance music, utilizing modular synths. If you’re looking for a darkwave-flavored, nostalgic injection of synthesizer-porn, don’t miss his Saturday set (7:30 p.m.).

Pinegrove Admittedly, I might have also labeled this one “problematic.” Musically, Pinegrove (playing a sundown set on Sunday) was one of the most promising bands in America. Its 2016 album Cardinal is emo-country-rock that's introspective, meticulously arranged and ready to turn on a dime, going from quiet, almost lonely laments on life in the suburbs to shouted, jangly odes about breaking away. Frontman Evan Stephens Hall is a Kenyon College product with a literary streak that makes its way into every lyric, but he also got caught up in the #MeToo movement in 2017.

Hall explained—in his trademark longwinded manner—that he’d been accused of “sexual coercion.”

The news sent Hall to therapy and aloof fans trying to figure out exactly what that meant (it’s “the act of using pressure, alcohol or drugs, or force to have sexual contact with someone against his or her will”). Going forward Pinegrove—which almost played its first Bay area shows at the since-shuttered Transition Art Gallery DIY space before the gig was moved to Ybor City—was either canceled or consumed in private by fans still drawn to the intimate character sketches and heartbreak on a 2018 album, Skylight, and warmth of 2020’s Marigold. In January, Pinegrove released another deeply layered album, 11:11, which its supports this weekend. There are emo DJ nights that won’t play Pinegrove anymore, and I’m still conflicted on all of it. However, I’ve never missed a Florida show from the Montclair, New Jersey outfit, and I doubt I’ll be outside of earshot at GMF.

Moonthing Jeff Fox has been the secret weapon for a lot of Tampa bands including at least one iteration of punk legend Pink Lincolns, but he’s found his calling in the shadows of this night crawling, vintage gear-toting psych-rock outfit that likes it sound to wear a little sunscreen but also live in “the space between ‘The Shining’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’” with a side of grunge.

Nobody’s watching Actually, a lot of people will be watching you when you step into the Kiley Gardens Silent Disco, but only you will hear the sounds coming from any one of the three channels available and all curated live and in-person by some of the best local selectahs including DJ Casper, DJ Friki Donya, DJ Deacon and Von Garden Jr. Keep your self-contained party on the dancefloor (aka

Questions GMF has one of the most no-frills layouts in the local festival scene, and its infrastructure has been emulated by other organizers trying to pull off similar large-scale events at The Curt. That doesn’t mean you can’t get confused. Luckily, the festival is staffed by what feels like an army of volunteers all wearing “Roadie” and “Crew” shirts. Almost all of them have the exact answer you’re looking for, so don’t be afraid to ask.

Recycled Tunes Folks seem to always overlook that for the last 11 years, GMF has raised money for its foundation,

QUIET PART LOUD: You won’t be able to hear everyone watching you in the Silent Disco. which helps propel a Recycled Tunes program that collects musical instruments year round, sends them to Don Banks Music for refurbishing, then redistributes them back into local music programs. There aren’t very many things that feel better than giving a kid an instrument, and GMF does it over and again year in and year out. Catch the Tampa Metro Youth Orchestra in action on Sunday (1:15 p.m.) to see the fruits of the effort.

Soul Despite past sets from queens like Erykah Badu, seeing Mavis Staples on the 2022 GMF lineup feels like a major coup that really puts GMF on a lot of new fans’ radars. The 82-year-old is a global festival favorite and still enjoying a major indie-scene resurgence on the heels of collaborations with Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy.

Staples’ appearance will be bittersweet, however, because her longtime backup singer—Skylark’s Donny Gerrard—died early this month at the age of 75 after a bout with cancer. Expect Staples to pay tribute to him, perhaps with a cover of Skylark’s 1972 hit “Wildflower.”

Underrated There are a lot of good things about GMF in this preview, but I still think the festival punches above its weight. A really big chunk of that credit goes to a fanbase that bought in 11 years ago, kept coming back, bringing their kids, and some who even took their devotion a step further by volunteering. It’s heartwarming to see a few dozen unpaid volunteers (I think there are, maybe, five, paid positions in the organization) come together each year to make this happen.

Views There might come a day when GMF outgrows its home at the Curt and Kiley Gardens, but we hope like hell they never leave and just expand to four days instead. While you’ll be surrounded by friends and great music this weekend, don’t forget to pause and just take in the vistas featuring the Hillsborough River and minarets at University of Tampa. The Aces, Band of Horses and Allman Betts band own the sunset sets on the mainstage this year, and from anywhere in the park, the scenery at golden hour will be unforgettable.

Tickets They’re still available online, and easy to get at the gate. Early birds are always the best deal, but $45 for a single-day ticket and $70-$95 GA two and three-day passes aren’t bad either.

Also coming back is Margo Price, who first played the festival in 2015 under a different band name (Margo & the Pricetags). Price went on to sign to Third Man Records which released her 2016 breakout Midwest Farmer’s Daughter.

Since then, she’s become an icon of the new outlaw country movement and left the storied label for Loma Vista, a division of Concord which is releasing her still-unnamed new album.

Zzzz This is going to be an unpopular take, but don’t be afraid to do nothing at GMF. There’s a lot of open space on the festival grounds, and if you can find a place to sit—and maybe even some shade—take a beer nap. With all the ambient entertainment programing on deck you might wake up to the sound of a second line blaring tuba music as the sun goes down. And even if you totally sleep on GMF altogether this year, I’m willing to bet you’ll get a chance to make up for it in 2023.

Mak daddies

Meet Tampa indie-pop band Mak before its GMF set on Saturday.

pon entering a quiet, yet packed Temple Terrace coffee shop, the guys of Mak wore warm smiles to contrast their collected demeanor. The group exudes an inherently boyish energy reflected in multi-instrumentalist Drake Morgan’s green hair. A beaded angel charm dangles from frontman Ian Makrianes’ ear.

Sitting together in a hidden corner of the room, the band talked about their upcoming performance at the Gasparilla Music Festival (GMF), set for Feb. 25-27 in downtown Tampa.

Mak (stylized, “MAK” in an homage to the family name) takes the stage early on Feb. 26 as part of a Saturday lineup that includes indie-pop bands Peach Tree Rascals, DBMK, and Billboard chart topping New Orleans rock band The Revivalists.

Mak also includes Ian’s brother Aiden Makrianes on bass and cousin Evan Makrianes on drums. The indie-pop quartet has a self-described “hydrophonic” sound—and no need to look up the word, folks, the band says they made it up.

“It means wet sound,” Ian told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay while laughing to himself, “Drake and I were probably a little stoned, but we asked ourselves, ‘What’s a word we can use that’s like … stupid but works?’. People that are nerds about guitars and tone describe them as wet, referring to the effects and stuff–and our guitars produce that sound.”

The band buzzes with an almost palpable excitement when they talk about their Gaspy Fest slot, a milestone performance that is also

Mak’s first festival set ever. “We’re so grateful for the opportunity. The festival is a staple in the Tampa music scene. It’s great to finally get a chance to do it,” Ian said, noting the opportunity to play for folks who’ll be seeing the two-yearold band for the first time, too.

Mak says “No Mercy” from their latest EP, Party Noise, is the cut that best represents who they are. “It’s a pinnacle of all our skills in one song and showcases all of our individual strengths,” says Aiden.

“It’s fast-paced, it’s loud, it’s rowdy— but still chill and indie-ish, two mediums we strike,” adds Ian. Morgan—who’s been best friends with Ian since high school— is attracted to the song’s “forward” yet “emotional” energy, marked by Ian’s vibrato vocal and guitars that pick up speed around him.

What’s next after GMF? A new single, “The Way You Look,” set for release the week after the band’s performance. Evan says it’s his favorite Mak song to date, and fans can expect to hear it at the band’s first-ever Emo Night Tampa appearance on March 5 in Ybor City. And local gigs are where fans can keep up with Mak, which currently has no plans for a headlining tour in the near future.

And even if you don’t make it to Mak’s set, you’ll still probably hear them off in the distance. “Bring earplugs,” Morgan jokes before Ian quickly cuts him off, adding, “Don’t bring them, don’t taint the sound. It’ll be loud—experience it.”

Emma Hedrick with the Helios Jazz Orchestra (Saturday, Feb. 26) Manson founded the 18-piece Helios band about 13 years ago. “It was funny—I call it the ‘accidental big band’,” he says. “I was wanting to do a jazz band evening with retirees and students, and I wound up with a bunch of pro players.

We’re pretty diligent. We actually rehearse every two weeks.”

Helios will perform instrumental pieces as well as back vocalist Hedrick, a 21-year-old student at Frost School of Music at University of Miami. “I was struck by the maturity of her voice,” Manson says. “I’m super-picky about vocalists. In fact, I’m terrible about it. I don’t like the ones who adopt a particular affection, who combine different legendary singers

into their voice. Emma’s singing sounds very authentic.”

Chris Dingman Trio (Sunday, Feb. 27) The New York-based vibraphonist/composer— who has worked with Hancock, Shorter and other prominent artists—is coming in from New York and will team up with Miami musicians Carlo DeRosa (bass) and Rodolfo Zuniga (drums).

Dingman’s deeply resonant tone mines the bell-like quality of his instrument. He matches that with a formidable technique and improvisational imagination. His recorded music is by and large calm and ethereal. (For you jazz aficionados, it’s reminiscent of the ECM Records sound.) Manson has a hunch that the ad hoc trio will “spike up the energy” for this gig.

C Chuck Owen and the Jazz Surge: The Making of Within Us The big band music on Within Us is more like orchestral jazz, and Chuck Owen’s is complex and challenging, but melodic and intrinsically listenable. It employs a panoply of rhythms beyond swing. The music incorporates elements of classical, rock, blues, Latin and more, and features a consistently intriguing flow of texture and color. For Jazz Surge’s 25th anniversary the 67-year-old who ran the jazz program at USF from 1981 until he retired, released the album, and on Thursday he’ll screen a documentary about the Within Us ’ creation, with splices of the release show at New York City’s Birdland Jazz Club mixed in. There’s no performance afterwards, but a Q&A will go down.

Emo Night headliners typically start around midnight, so make sure you’re nice and amped up before the “lo-fi, fuzz-worshiping” Las Nubes takes the stage. Our southern neighbor is no stranger to Tampa Bay either, as Las Nubes has played various venues in the area including Lucky You Tattoo and Crowbar in 2019—the same year the shredders performed Iggy Pop’s “I

It might have been released too late in the year to have received a Grammy nomination, but if it wasn’t, shame on the Academy. In the meantime, the DJ is no stranger to Tampa Bay, having lived in Miami for much of his life, so his Friday night Ybor City show—part of the Ritz’s #Pound Fridays series—is a pleasant addition, but no massive surprise. Shaq’s most likely only going to be there in spirit, but you can still go in person. Tickets are still available, and as always, the show starts ultra late. But it’s on a Friday, so who gives a shit? C Rutterkin (album release) w/You Vandal/Bad, Bad Things In October, St. Pete indie punk band Rutterkin finally released its long-awaited debut album A Portal For Spirits, and even sold limitededition splatter vinyl copies on Bandcamp.

Unfortunately, the band just hasn’t had a safe enough state of mind to play a show promoting the release. “COVID curtailed our plans for doing it earlier,” the band told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. Finally, four months later, Ryan Metcalf, Chris Stellern, Dave Conrad, and James Pendleton are ready to hold an official release party, with some killer local support beside them. Gainesville pop-punk band You Vandal opens Rutterkin along with Bad, Bad Things, featuring members of Career. (The Bends, St. Petersburg)

P.M. Tiger w/Witch Hiatus/Hovercar/ Silverpeak On Friday, Clearwater-based rock band P.M. Tiger is releasing My Love Music to all platforms. The dance-rock

group—which released its new “8-Ball” single in December—is hitting the road for a brief Southeast tour, with stops in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. Closing it all is a homecoming gig of sorts, taking place at Ybor City’s beloved Crowbar the day after the album drops. Joining in to support are fellow local favorites Witch Hiatus, grunge duo Hovercar, and Silverpeak. If you’d like to go see these guys the day the album actually does release, there’s a show at Orlando’s Henao Contemporary Center as well. Just a thought. (Crowbar, Ybor City)

The upcoming Feel The Void reunites the band with early producer Brian McTernan behind the console. Around this time last year, Engelbert Humperdinck lost his wife, and on Valentine’s Day last week, he canceled a virtual concert due to a family member being killed in an accident the night before. But after over 60 years, the guy behind “A Man Without Love” understands that on no account do you ever just quit music. He’s even bringing his seemingly constant tour to Ruth Eckerd Hall as part of the venue’s “Adults At Leisure” matinee concert series, which has previously hosted afternoon shows from the likes of Tony Orlando and the late B.J. Thomas. After all, we don’t want to keep the 85-year-old’s fanbase up hours past its bedtime. Or for that matter, Engelbert’s. C The Eagles Not that it’s a surprise that the surviving members of the Eagles are charging hundreds of dollars for concert tickets, *cough cough Hell Freezes Over* but without the late Glenn Frey onstage, Don Henley’s got a lot of nerve. But if you really want to hear Joe Walsh shred out that “Hotel California” solo without Don Felder to duel with, you have your chance to do so on Monday. Henley, Walsh, and Timothy B. Schmit will play the album of the same name front to back, with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey beside them. Yep, it really takes two to replace Glenn. (Amalie Arena, Tampa) Keb’ Mo’ Keb’ Mo’ made sure to keep ultra busy during COVID-19’s more-or-less lingering presence last year. He released three singles—one of which live debuted in Clearwater—and last month, his first studio record since 2019’s Oklahoma (unless you count his Christmas album from the same year). Last February, the 70-year old blues virtuoso played a fully solo,

socially-distanced show at Ruth Eckerd Hall.

This time around, Keb’ does a full-capacity gig at the Cap in downtown Clearwater with his three-piece backing band. Tickets are still available, and if this show lives up to last year’s stripped down performance… well, tell everybody you know. (Bilheimer Capitol Theatre, Clearwater)

Komrads w/I Ya Toyah/Stclvr In terms of its lineup, Komrads has taken a Panic! At The Disco turn. Like Brendon Urie—before recent controversy—Zach Burnett, the band’s main creative force, is now using the band as a solo project. Co-founding members Jesse Hellstead and Sam Langley have parted ways, leaving Burnett to establish the project’s latest, nine-track album The Wolf on his own. We’re not sure who exactly is backing Burnett up while on the road, but you can find out next week. Opening the show will be self-described “industrial electronic one-woman army” I Ya Toyah, and harsh industrial-pop from enby icon Stclvr. (Hooch and Hive, Tampa)

Theory of a Deadman Two decades years after opening for Nickelback (wait, don’t leave yet!) Theory of a Deadman is still active both on the road and in the studio.

Maybe six weeks before COVID-19 hit, the band behind “Bitch Come Back” unveiled Say Nothing, which hit no. 5 on the Billboard Top Alternative Albums. It ain’t no. 1, but it’s something! You have the chance to go party with the Canadian quartet at the Hard Rock Event Center in Tampa on Wednesday, without the aid of an opening act. Enough already Dear Oracle, I constantly feel like I’m not doing “enough.” Enough for my job, enough for my passion projects, enough to take care of myself—I’m not even doing enough to relax!

I just constantly feel like time is running out, but instead of doing things I love, I just feel exhausted and end up looking at my phone for hours. Any advice on how to deal?—Enough isn’t enough

Dear Oracle, like you, I identify as a witch. I would love to join up with others to worship, but my practice is fairly eclectic, and I don’t know what that would look like. While I started out as a Wiccan, I no longer identify with that or any really established tradition. Should I start my own tradition? Join another tradition’s coven even if I don’t 100% agree? Keep being solitary?— Witch Way to Go?

Cards: The Lovers reversed, Ten of Pentacles reversed, Six of Pentacles Dear Enough, first, you should get more sleep.

I don’t say this to be patronizing, as if you’re a fussy toddler; I say it because you sound like you have a textbook case of burnout. Insomnia is a classic symptom of it, and chronic insomnia can lead to emotional dysregulation (like a looping negative thought that you’re not enough), feeling exhausted, and wanting to numb out with the iPhone. It throws everything off and makes it harder to deal with your health. If you aren’t sleeping well, I highly encourage you to speak to your primary care doctor or a psychiatrist for treatment.

The second thing is that you need to cut yourself some serious slack. With that giving Six of Pentacles coupled with the reverse Lovers, I think you are overdue for some genuine selfcompassion. With that Ten of Pentacles, you might come from a “rise and grind” kind of family, or it could be your job is running you ragged, but you need to be honest and meet yourself where you’re at.

If that sounds too soft-handed for you, think about it this way: without tending to yourself now, you’re not going to have the energy to pour into your passion projects and relaxation later.

Being the only major arcana, The Lovers card is the emotional powerhouse in this spread.

It’s not just a card about love and relationships—it’s also about all of our strong emotions and about what we value. Unfortunately, there does seem to be a disconnect between what you value and how you feel you can get there.

While there are dozens of articles about dealing with burnout with some suggestions that are alright in the moment (ordering dinner if you feel overwhelmed, being around a supportive friend group), they don’t cut to the underlying reason and may not be enough for treatment.

Burnout is often coupled with anxiety and depression, and if you can, I’d highly encourage you to speak to a therapist.

I’m so sorry that you’re going through such a rough time right now. I hope you’re able to talk to someone and take time for yourself. I know that’s easier said than done, but I sincerely hope that for you.

Cards: Queen of Cups, New Moon, Seven of Wands reversed, Seven of Cups Dear Witch Way, if I had to choose a single word to describe my spiritual path, it would be “lonely.” While my faith includes a powerful relationship between me and my deity, I don’t have a lot of other things that make up a communal religion. I don’t have a book like The Bible I can turn to. The history of my tradition is fractured, so I don’t have precise rituals to follow. I don’t have the fellowship that comes with joining a church, which is something I miss, and I don’t have anyone locally to circle with.

I understand exactly how you feel—and others do, too. Most other witches I know are also solitary and not necessarily by choice.

If spirituality is a large part of your life, it’s natural to want to share it with others, though that might be difficult to do. If you aren’t from an established path such as Wiccan, with shared iconography, prayers, and ceremony, it can be difficult to “click” with others because what feels profound to one person might feel silly to another.

As the Queen of Cups, you are someone who sits well with profound mystery. Pair that with the creativity of the New Moon card, and it’s no wonder you’re an eclectic witch. You are someone who can feel around in the dark and out of that blackness create something new.

I’d guess that with this ability, you probably won’t like working in a more rigid tradition, and it doesn’t surprise me at all you’d want to create your own.

But take heed, high priestess: not all paths are good. We also have two “seven” cards, Wands and Cups. While the Seven of Wands can show the world what you’re made of, it’s also a card that says “protect your neck.” The Seven of Cups is similar, with both great and terrible options laid out before you.

If you do decide to start your own tradition—which, honestly, you’d probably be good at—you’d have to walk a tightrope to make sure your ego is in check and that you are inviting in people with energy you not only want to mingle with but also help guide. A priest is a priest, after all.
