eth Lynn is one of Tampa Bay’s most unique live music offerings, and on Jan. 17 he showed Tampa’s Rivercrest neighborhood (near South Seminole Heights) just why. “Anyone here seen a harp played live before?” he asked a crowd gathered on a front lawn at and across from the corner of N River Boulevard and W South Avenue.

As part of Katara Trio, Lynn performs with the multi-levered instrument—which he first learned about when he was a student at East Ybor magnet school Phillip Shore—at his right side and a dual-keyboard and sampler set up to his left. The compositions could definitely fall into jazz, but they’re sprinkled with flourishes that’ll intrigue fans of both pop and J Dilla, too. Refund the police

Tampa’s police budget grew more than any other major U.S. city, says report.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Tampa saw a 36% rise in violent crime during the first five months of 2020, compared to the same period in 2019. Overall, the city saw a 10% increase in violent crime, which is defined by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) as any of four offenses: aggravated assault, rape, robbery, and murder and non-negligent manslaughter.

The increase followed a yearslong trend of budget boosts for the Tampa Police Department.

The increase came despite calls from local protestors, who repeatedly issued demands for the city to cut funding from the police department and reinvest those funds into the community.

Tampa’s increased violent crime last year, and the mayor’s devotion to boosting the resources the Tampa Police Department has at its disposal to police communities, does provoke questions about what can effectively address the root causes of local violent crime.

Dr. Christy Lopez, a law professor at Georgetown University, told Bloomberg that hiring more officers doesn’t necessarily translate to reduced crime. Although Tampa police were not directly implicated in the city’s surge in violent crime last year, according to reporting by the Times, use of force data from the department has painted an alarming picture— certainly one that complicates the notion that a well-funded police force translates to a stronger public safety system.

ast year, following the police murders of Black Americans such as George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor, calls to “defund the police” were prevalent in just about every major city in the nation. Consequently, many of the U.S.’ 50 largest metros responded to this movement by reducing police budgets—except for a handful of cities like Tampa.

A recent Bloomberg report found that the city of Tampa increased its police department budget by 8.6% for the fiscal year of 2021. Based on CityLab data, this was the largest police budget increase among all 50 cities included in the analysis, followed

by Fresno, San Diego, Sacramento and Atlanta.

Among cities analyzed, Tampa also saw the biggest boost to its general budget, with an increase of 11.9%. Fresno saw the secondlargest general budget boost at 10.4%, followed by a 7.3% general budget boost in Seattle.

The report adds that out of the 42 cities where Democrats picked up more votes in the 2020 election cycle, Tampa was identified as one of 24 that moved to increase police spending for the 2021 fiscal year.

In August, Tampa City Council unanimously approved Mayor Jane Castor’s proposal to increase TPD's budget by $13 million for 2021 to nearly $176 million in total.

Bloomberg’s reporting shows that Tampa wasn’t alone in its budget increase. Twenty-six of the 50 cities included in the analysis moved to increase their police budgets.

But not all of the cities’ police departments received similar boosts. Data compiled by CityLab shows that several cities with strong activist networks—including New York City, Minneapolis, Seattle, and Denver—saw cuts in their police budget spending.

In Austin for instance, a broad coalition of grassroots groups such as Communities of Color United, Austin Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Austin Justice Coalition, and even some elected officials organized around cuts to the city’s police department. And it showed: last August, the Austin City Council unanimously voted to cut the city’s police budget by 33%—or $150 million—over the next year, with $20 million in funds to be immediately redirected towards violence

These calls were spurred by the murders of Floyd and Taylor, and have been bolstered by the murders of Jonas Joseph and Dominique Mulkey—both 26-years old—by TPD in the past year.

Before Mayor Castor—who was previously TPD’s chief for nearly six years—shared her proposal for the budget increase, and in the months since, community members continued their calls on the city’s elected officials to reallocate Tampa’s police department budget and demand accountability for police violence.

At the time, Tampa city officials pointed to gang activity as a major contributing factor for this increase, according to the Times’ reporting.

Much of the violent crime documented by TPD involved gun violence—an issue that has persisted throughout Tampa Bay. Castor, for her part, has boasted the city’s success in reducing crime by a reported 80% over the last 17 years, which she attributes to efforts by the police department to “forge policecommunity trust.”

According to crime data from the FBI, the number of violent crimes reported by TPD dropped from 5,733 in 2003 to 1,598 in 2018.

Why can’t we be friends?

The people who tried to overturn an election want to sing ‘Kumbaya.’ Hard pass.

onald Trump’s second impeachment last week presented House Republicans with a Gordian knot.

Trump will leave office with an approval rating at 29%, fewer jobs than when he started, and U.S. COVID fatalities about to top World War II deaths. He’ll depart under the ignominious cloud of a pathetic, anti-democratic, and ultimately violent attempt to overturn the results of an election he lost by 7 million votes. He’s been abandoned by allies, deprived of his biggest megaphone, and faces the possibility of criminal charges. Historians will soon rank him alongside James Buchanan and Andrew Johnson as the Worst President Ever.

Yet 46% of Republicans say Trump bears no responsibility for the insurrection, and 64% believe he won the election.

So to vote for impeachment would expose Republican officials to the base’s vitriol—provoking primaries and, some reportedly feared, death threats. But to defend Trump’s malevolence would further alienate both reality-based voters and corporate funders. It might also remind the country that more than half of them parroted Trump’s voter-fraud delusion, which nearly led to lynching of Vice President Pence.

The middle ground on which all but 10 House Republicans settled went something like this: Trump went too far, but impeachment was “divisive.” To cite a random example, Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina: “Rather than lashing out at our political opponents, every one of us needs to ask ourselves what we can do to tone down the temperature of the rhetoric, the rancor, and the violence.”

In other words, holding Trump accountable for whipping his supporters into a frenzy that got a cop killed will lead to more violence, so we shouldn’t hold Trump accountable. (And here I thought we didn’t negotiate with terrorists.)

Hudson, a proud member of the Sedition Caucus, is no more disingenuous than the 137 others who both did the rioters’ bidding and voted to give Trump a pass. (Tom Rice of South Carolina was the only election objector to vote for impeachment.) In the week between insurrection and impeachment, “unity” became a party line.

Look no further than Sen. Lindsey Graham’s letter this weekend to incoming Majority Leader Charles Schumer, demanding that Schumer dismiss the “meaningless” impeachment. Not doing

so, warned Graham—who asked Georgia election officials to throw out all mail ballots from certain counties—would mean “delaying indefinitely, if not forever, the healing of this great Nation.”

To Republicans, it seems, healing can only exist on their terms. Unity is a one-way street. For Democrats, the question is what’s to be gained from making nice with a party that cannot unyoke itself from Donald Trump—or, for that matter, a party that just two weeks ago was willing to overthrow democracy in service to its Mad King. According to history, nothing. There can be no healing with those who feel entitled to supremacy and are willing to burn down institutions to get their way. The more you give, the more they take. The more they take, the more they demand. The dog chases its tail.

More important, the pursuit of unity comes at a cost—not to those for whom politics is a game to be played or a profession to be monetized, but to those whose rights wind up sacrificed on the altar of comity.

In the run-up to the Civil War, for instance, the government desperately sought to alleviate Southern concerns about abolition: the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, “Dred Scott,” all things that benefited enslavers. After one lost election, the South seceded anyway. The North couldn’t compromise enough.

The South’s fear was democracy itself: before the war, of evolving Northern opinion repudiating human bondage; after the war, of formerly enslaved people demanding equal rights. But for nine decades after Reconstruction, the center held on the South’s terms. With the two major parties ideologically incoherent, white hegemony went unchallenged, and the country remained “unified.”

That ended with the Civil Rights Act. Over a generation, as the South became a Republican stronghold, the increasingly orthodox GOP grew increasingly evangelical, anti-intellectual, antagonistic to civil rights, and authoritarian. By Barack Obama’s election in 2008, the party had morphed into a far-right movement steeped in grievance and racial anxiety, radicalized by a propaganda machine that perpetuated an alternate reality in which white Christians were oppressed by popular culture, educational institutions, tech companies, and the mainstream media.

I THOUGHT WE DIDN’T NEGOTIATE WITH TERRORISTS: Unity is a one-way street for GOP chuds like Sen. Lindsey Graham.

As the saying goes, to those accustomed to power, equality feels like discrimination.

Like the South 160 years ago, democracy—specifically, the wrong kind of people participating in democracy—has become the enemy. Since 2013, when the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act, this has led to myriad attempts to make voting more difficult, usually couched in pretextual concerns about “fraud.”

After Trump’s defeat, cowing to pressure from the MAGA base, 147 Republicans in the House and Senate attempted the once unthinkable.

They sought to discard (Black) votes in Atlanta, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Philadelphia as illegitimate and reverse unambiguous election results.

With the bloodless coup doomed from the start, Trump’s supporters—convinced by months of gaslighting that they were on the vanguard of a revolution against corrupt forces—stormed the Capitol while the president watched on television.

Now that both bloodless and bloody coups have failed, these Republicans want to forgive and forget so the country can “heal”—and, of course, so they can rehabilitate their reputations and refashion themselves as “serious” lawmakers whose inevitable sighs about Joe Biden’s “radical agenda” should be taken seriously.

That universal condemnation of Trump would also be unifying—and good for the country —never seems to have crossed their minds. But that’s how it goes: Anything that demands courage from them is “divisive.” And that’s the lesson for Democrats: As long as Republicans define “unity” in terms of their own comfort, they don’t deserve the presumption of good faith.

It’s not unity they’re after. It’s surrender.

Noise citations and fines dropped for Pasco BLM protesters.

T

he City of New Port Richey’s attempts to make Black Lives Matter protesters literally pay for speaking out loudly about police reform have met a dead end.

On Jan. 14, at least three protesters facing fines related to noise violations told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay that their citations have been dropped. Those protesters include Marlowe Jones, Christina “Nina” Boneta and Stephanie Hinkle.

Jones said he accrued in between $2,500$3,000 in fines, and Boneta said she had racked more than $2,500 in fines. CL reviewed the nolle prosequi (stop prosecution orders) filed by the City of New Port Richey, which show that at least five different protesters saw their cases dismissed.

Joshua Sheridan represented Boneta and a handful of other Pasco activists hit with noise violations. He told CL that the ordinance—originally meant to crack down on bars, but used broadly by police this summer to try and muzzle protesters—is “poorly written and rarely used.”

In a social media post from Sheridan’s firm, the Tampa lawyer wrote that a team of attorneys including Laurie Chane, Luke Lirot and James Shaw Jr. did all the heavy lifting, adding that, “Today we were pleased to learn Pasco County finally dismissed those citations.”

Both Jones and Boneta told CL that the New Port Richey city attorney also tried to offer them $75 plea deals.

“It was obviously an attempt to do what they always do—scare people. Like, ‘Hey you can either fight this and pay all this money, or why don’t we give you a good little number, you know $75, and plead guilty or no contest,’” Boneta said. “That was their last attempt. They know that they were wrong, and they knew that they were targeting us.”

CL left a message for New Port Richey City Attorney Tim Driscoll, which has yet to be returned.

Boneta said that in the next few days, BLM protesters are laying low due to the possibility of violence in the wake of the insurrection at the Capitol, but added that local activists would continue to demonstrate and call for change. One particular agency of interest for Boneta is the Pasco County Sheriff which the Tampa Bay Times says has been monitoring and harassing Pasco residents using a cutting-edge intelligence program meant to curb crime.

Over the summer and into the fall, Pasco BLM activists—who’ve caused zero property damage according to NPR PD officials—dealt with intimidation from not just Trump supporters and Confederate flag-wavers, but Proud Boys, too. In September, a Facebook user posted about the group, saying, “Burn their house burn their cars fuck their shit up taste of their own medicine.” In response, NPR PD Deputy Chief Lauren Letona told CL that the department “does not condone acts of violence and take threats very seriously.”

NPR PD Chief Kim Bogart told WFTS that his officers cited a counterprotester for covering his license tag and turned a video—which Bogart says showed a counterprotester displaying a gun—over to the State Attorney’s Office. In late September, The NPR PD told CL it no longer employs an officer who allegedly gave a pro-police Facebook user information on the whereabouts of a Black Lives Matter demonstration.

Jones, who told CL he’s received death threats to the home he and his family keep, has vowed to keep demonstrating. “We definitely have to think about safety always,” he said. “But we’re definitely still going to be very active in the Pasco community at every level.”

Sky Puppy Brewing moving into former New World site in Ybor City.

I

n the wee hours of Sept. 24, 2017, I watched Danielle Vergnaud and Matthew McKinnon get engaged outside of New World Brewery.

The proposal happened just outside the beloved Ybor City bar, restaurant and music venue’s wrought iron gates, less than an hour after last call on New World’s last night of business after a 22-year-run in the historic district.

For years prior, I’d shared many a conversation, glance and clink of the pint glass with the residents of the historic district. From wherever my drunk ass was hiding, I felt lucky to watch the moment; seeing two people affirm their love for each other certainly made saying goodbye to my favorite bar sting just a tiny bit less.

New World has since re-emerged at a new location—and the residential development that forced the venue’s closure is still not open—but McKinnon and Vergnaud are bringing beer and community back to 1313 E 8th Ave. with a new endeavor called Sky Puppy Brewing, which will live at the historic firehouse that shared a wall with New World’s kitchen.

The loaded feelings that come with bringing a brewery back to the very address you loved for years is something the couple said they’ll unpack with Creative Loafing Tampa Bay in the days to come, but for now, Matthew and Danielle wanted to be clear that there’s no hard opening date or range set for the project.

“Because of the historical nature of Casa Bomberos Number 2 we are currently in a holding period on projection dates,” the couple wrote in an email to CL. The building Sky Puppy is moving into was built in 1892 and was home to the second fire house of Tampa Bay. The couple

told CL it was waiting to hear back from builders and architects sometime last week.

Full disclosure: I have a past with McKinnon. We worked downtown Tampa’s Oktoberfest festivals together at a pre-development Water Works Park and continued to manage Oktoberfest’s bar operations when the party moved to Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.

I’ve been in the kitchen of his Ybor City loft and sipped on the many different beers that earned him more than 40 medals on the state home brew circuit, and I have been a visitor to both Coppertail, where in 2015 McKinnon landed his second full-time professional brewing job, and TBBCo. where he’s tended bar.

I am a fan of his work, but McKinnon insists that it’s never been just him behind the beers he makes.

“I have been a part of various teams throughout the years that have made award winning beer,” he wrote. He does not believe that in a production setting that any one person is responsible for an award winning beer. “Each person who makes contact during or downstream of recipe development with a batch of liquid that is deemed deserving of a medal is part of the magic, these accolades are shared or should be.”

That’s why I’m excited to learn what he and Danielle—a leader and influential person who’s managed teams of 30-plus people in her retail industry job as a visual merchandising manager for 17 years—have in store for the neighborhood.

Safe-ish outings and something to look forward to in this new A&E roundup.

Fairgrounds, St. Petersburg’s immersive arts experience, announces massive list of participating artists If you have yet to hear about Fairgrounds, let us give you a quick summary. The immersive arts experience spans throughout a 15,000-square-foot space with Florida-inspired installations. Last April, Fairgrounds founders Liz Dimmitt and Mikhail Mansion issued a call for artists to submit ideas for featured installations. This month, Fairgrounds finally shared the more than 60 participating artists who’ll flex their weird and wacky ideas within the grounds.

One of those is former Creative Loafing Tampa Bay cover girl, Macy Higgins and her partner Emiliano Settecasi. The duo is part of Fairgrounds’ inaugural immersive experience called “Strawberry Room.” The mixed-media installation celebrates Florida strawberries and pays homage to the culture that surrounds strawberry production in the greater Tampa Bay region. According to the website, “The Strawberry Room, located in the Mermaid Star Motel, presents a celestial theory for the origins of the beloved fruit, while acknowledging how the berries are grown and harvested today, and showcasing the folksy decadence that defines strawberry culture and cuisine.”

Zulu Painter is on the roster and tasked with creating a mural that “echoes the energy of Fairgrounds Projects” Zulu Painter’s design is “meant to bring the viewer further into the environment of the Mermaid Star Motel, with a goal to help make the experience as unforgettable as possible.”

Nashville video game engineer Shay Willard, whose worked for Disney’s Imagineering department, is also included in the lineup.

Another participating artist is Chad Mize.

Known for his colorful murals and his very own gallery, Mize (stylized “MIZE”), the artist will be creating his signature doodle walls for the entrance and exit of Fairgrounds. According to a recent post by Mize, the doodle will take inspiration from the narrative and installations inside the experience, foreshadowing

Largo’s Highland Recreation Complex hosts a weekly lightsaber choreography class Tampa Bay nerds, geeks, and Sith Lords: there’s a choreography class for you.

Unite on Wednesdays for “Art of Lightsaber Choreography” happening at Largo’s Highland Recreation Complex. The class is taught by Kevin Daniels, a School Resource Officer with the Pinellas County Schools Police Department.

Daniels, who’s favorite Star Wars movie is “The Empire Strikes Back,” and his wife also owned Largo’s Waypoint 6 Tavern and Geekery before it closed last year—yet another 2020 bar and restaurant casualty.

Don’t let the term “choreography” fool you though. The class teaches not dance but stage combat—something Daniels has been teaching for years.

“I have had the privilege to teach for the theater department at St. Petersburg College, American Stage, Eckerd College, Studio @ 620 and numerous renaissance festivals over the years,” Daniels told CL. He said it all got started when he and his pals needed a practice space for the “Saber Guild,” a LucasFilm-recognized costuming group that focuses on lightsaber choreography. After contacting Highland, they asked Daniels if he’d like to teach a class there.

Of course, he said yes.

Students should not come in full costume, but wear clothes that are movement-ready. “My Saber Guild team, The Batuu Temple, does not wear our costumes until we are ready to run dress rehearsals for shows,” Daniels added.

Though the classes are inside, they do take other COVID-19 precautions. “We wear masks inside the facility, and if someone borrows a lightsaber from us, we make sure we disinfect the saber after every use,” Daniel said.

“Luckily, the stunt sabers length makes physical distancing easy when practicing. You don’t want to be too close to your opponent!,” he added. The classes—suitable for sixth graders through adults—start at basic moves. They also have extra Lightsabers to borrow if yours in the shop. Still hesitant? Don’t be.

“Whereas Master Yoda would say, ‘Do or do not. There is no try,’” Daniels said, “I disagree. Try.” Art of Lightsaber choreography happens on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Registration is $7 and up, and the Highland Recreation Complex is located at 400 Highland Ave. in Largo. Canopy conundrum

As Florida grows, can its sacred native trees be saved?

“L

ife begins at the end of your comfort zone,” says Capt. Barney Waterbury, of Gulfport, with a swashbuckling grin. He would know: the 64 year old’s resume includes a range of adventuresome careers, including high ropes course facilitator and sail captain.

Together with wife, Leta Woloshuk, he performs in the tribal-disco-gypsy-bluegrass duo Urban Gypsies of Florida. He’s a tree climber, too, and that’s what I’ve come to see him about today.

We’re setting ropes to climb one of the two ancient camphor trees in his front yard. We pick two sturdy limbs—at a safe social distance—and he deftly arcs a weighted line up and over then tugs a rubbery tube called a cambium saver into place, ensuring our ropes won’t cut into the tree’s bark as we ascend into its canopy. We tie a series of elegant knots which will allow us to gradually hitch and shimmy, like human inchworms, up our lines to branches 30 feet above.

We slide into climbing saddles that grip our waists and legs, keeping us heads-up in case of a fall. As I click into my line and take my first uncertain steps into thin air, I decide not to tell him—at this point at least—that I am afraid of heights.

There are tree climbing clubs all across the country, where climbers of all ages come together in search of “tree time”: a state of mind only found in the green universe of the tree canopy, a joy of movement that would probably make our arboreal ancestors proud. Waterbury first experienced it in 1999, while working with Pathfinder Outdoor Education, a local nonprofit that promotes community and personal wholeness through outdoor adventures. He was introduced to technical tree climbing (the “technical” part means using ropes and saddles) at a conference in Georgia, and saw the connection right away. “Getting out of our comfort zone makes us more comfortable with ourselves,” he explains, teaching us how to deal productively with conflict and fear. He estimates that Pathfinder served about 5,000 young climbers each year through work with school and community groups and open climbs.

I’ve hit the dreaded 10-foot point where, according to seasoned climbers note, acrophobia starts to set in. “This tree is my friend,” I remind myself. And how true: urban trees benefit cities by cooling buildings, scrubbing the air of pollutants, and slowing stormwater overflows

during heavy rains. They are important allies in the fight to slow climate change, with Florida’s urban forests alone sequestering the equivalent of 65 million tons of greenhouse gasses every year. They provide habitat for countless plant and animal species; writer Richard Preston calls the world’s tree canopy a “secret ocean” above our heads, whose depths of biodiversity are only now being plumbed. For all these reasons, city planners are starting to see trees the way climbers do, as an important public good.

I’m starting to get it. Now cradled in the friendly crook of a limb, I’m listening, bobbing my head and singing along, as Waterbury belts out a song he wrote about the joy of climbing trees. The guitar he’s strumming, which can also double as a canoe paddle, is covered with the signatures of many of the kids he has climbed with before. Even retired, it’s clear that he is still adept at building community. We’re looking down over the parcel he and Leta have lovingly transformed into an oasis, including a yard full of fruit trees, Leta’s massage clinic (The Art of Massage), and even a Bucky-domed pavilion for gathering and playing music (R. Buckminster Fuller was a geodesic dome advocate). While we’re aloft, visitors filter in and out: Chris Kendrick from Tampa’s famous Sweetwater Farm delivers mulch (payment for an upcoming Gypsies show at the farm), an arborist who wants to discuss technique, and two girls walking home from school who stop and smile quizzically at the man singing in the tree. Our tree has become a connection point.

And then the tree moves. My branch, caught in a gust of wind, seems to gently rise and fall, as if taking a deep breath.

It’s a tiny movement that sets my internal balance sensors into low-grade panic mode. Just a touch treesick, perhaps, but still loving the journey.

Barney spots the trouble from his branch and smiles knowingly.

“You felt that, didn’t you? Like being in a boat.

So many people never get to feel that.”

There’s a lot to that statement. For all the contemporary proponents of urban tree cover, not everyone is feeling the connection. There’s a countervailing national trend of loosening regulations on tree removal as infill presses into cities and house sizes increase. In July 2019, Florida passed a Private Property Rights law which placed the authority to judge whether trees on private property merit removal in the hands of arborists, rather than local

WHEN YOU CAN’T GO OUT, GO UP: Just another afternoon with Capt. Barney Waterbury in a camphor tree. governments, and struck down local regulations requiring property owners to replace trees that have been removed. Time will tell, but some arborists worry that tree canopy will thin as removals go undocumented. In Gulfport, one local artist was concerned enough about the increasing pace of removals to stage a tree memorial event, spanning two city blocks and featuring 3,763 individual markers dedicated to trees fallen and removed in 13 Pinellas municipalities in 2019.

Cities change, and so do urban trees.

Barney’s house sits on Tangerine Avenue, a reminder of large groves that flourished early in the town’s history, now lost to streets, homes, lawns, and greening—a cherished sour orange tree in Barney’s yard is battling the disease.

The real challenge is that decisions we make about urban trees now will not have their full impact until decades into the future. Barney points to several laurel oaks planted along his property line in a later stage of the city’s development, favored because they grow fast and provide good shade. But this choice came at a price, as these trees, prone to heart rot, have recently begun to die, creating serious hazards in the process. Urban climbers, he tells me, won’t go near these widowmakers.

Back on solid ground, Barney shares one more treasure with me: a fine collection of old and reclaimed lumber stacked neatly under his carport, including luxuriant boards and blocks of heart pine, one of which he cradles like a brick of gold (it’s almost as heavy). This fat pine, taken from Florida’s ancestral forests, was the preferred material for Gulfport’s earliest houses, including the homes on his property (one is an AirBnB). The wood waits for a new project and saves Barney a trip to what he calls the “Hell Depot,” where quick-grown, low-quality, highlydepressing lumber is the only choice.

Hearing him reflect on the life in these ancient boards, on reading the wind, on helping young folks set their roots, I am reminded of the poet W. S. Merwin, whose understanding of trees went way beyond biology and crossed into the realm of thinking like a tree. Merwin spent most of his adult life reforesting the washed-out Maui pineapple grove that was his home, cultivating an inner directive to “put life back into the world.” After his own fashion, I think this is what Barney is doing, too.

And me? I’ll be back in a tree before too long, I suspect, trading some me time, which the pandemic has given me far too much of, for some tree time. When you can’t go out, go up.

After Top Gun, a triathlete wonders what 2021’s race season will look like.

S

unday morning finds me with my feet in the sand and my heart beating fast. I focus on the serenity of my surroundings: Palm trees, salt water, white sand beaches. And 200 other people showing varying degrees of nervousness.

Fort DeSoto has always been a favorite spot of mine. Born and raised in St. Petersburg, I grew up climbing its cannons and wandering through the tunnels of the fort, running down the sandy beaches, riding my bike along the trails, searching for sand dollars in the salt water.

Today, though, I won’t have time to hunt for sand dollars on my swim. My bike ride will be a bit faster-paced too. My run will cross the finish line instead of the boundary of a campsite. I came to Fort DeSoto early this morning to race in the Top Gun Triathlon—my first tri in nearly a year and a half.

Because of coronavirus, gym closures and working from home became the norm. Our lifestyles became more sedentary, stress levels rose but most of all our healthy outlets were shut down. In a global pandemic—when it is more important than ever to maintain a healthy lifestyle—many things have gotten in the way of doing just that.

Not today.

Despite most races being canceled or rescheduled indefinitely, the Top Gun Triathlon pulled through. Logistics—road closures, extra pay for hired police officers and paramedics, the requirements of volunteers and more—mean race directors need a certain number of participants just to break even. Putting on a race takes a great deal of work under normal circumstances; with county ordinances mandating small numbers and limits to the number of participants permitted to sign up, most directors this past year have been forced to cancel their races.

I am pinching myself just to be here. There is an exceptional challenge in racing a tri, and it has been disappointing to have race after race canceled. My fellow participants seem just as excited to be here.

The swim portion is self-seeded today. This is different from pre-COVID races when large packs of swimmers gather at start line, and today we’re entering the water in groups of just two people. I wander closer to the back of the pack. A middle-aged man with nipple piercings jokes that he only does triathlons so he can drink more beer, and I laugh along with him.

I have found my people.

I am nervous to the max, but when I look across the sand I see my boyfriend approaching.

He came to see me off, and I couldn’t be more

grateful. I dart over for a quick good luck kiss before getting back to my spot.

Soon it’s my turn. I think of my reasons for being here today as I charge out into the water: I am here because I want to be better than I used to be. I am here because I want to be healthy.

Strong. Confident. I am here because I know I can’t wish away insecurities, fears, anxiety— but I can feel insecure and afraid and anxious, and then do the damn thing anyway.

I am here because I am an athlete. I may not break any records—but I sure as hell will tri.

The water is cold but invigorating and I don’t know whether it’s the temperature, the fact that I finally get to do a triathlon again, or the image of my boyfriend on shore but I have the best swim of any tri I’ve raced in. I stumble out of the water feeling dizzy, but happy. I shake the water from my ears and slog up the shore. One quarter-mile done; 13 to go.

At transition I rinse and dry my feet, hop on my bike and get ready for the next 10 miles.

There are a lot of strong athletes out here, and I get passed by a handful of elites. Still, though, I hold my own and am able to pass several other riders. My breath is rapid but as I reach midway I look across the clearing and see nothing but diamond-studded waters and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Miles of paradise. I cheer out a

few hoots and despite not getting any reply from fellow racers, I feel good. This is living.

When I reach transition for the second time, I down an energy gel, peel off my helmet and take a few gulps of water.

I start my run strong and steady. There are less volunteers and people cheering than at most races, so the ones who showed up really make a difference. I pass the giant fort I used to climb around as a kid. As I turn the corner, I hear music playing and see a man standing next to a boom box blasting the YMCA. I sing and dance with him. My boyfriend is there, too, and I feel my pulse quicken as my heart dances along.

It’s just what I needed to get me through the last leg of this race. I keep a steady pace for each of the 3.1 miles, smiling and cheering fellow athletes on as we all make our way to the finish.

The man I began the swim with has donned a viking cap for the run, and I laugh as we cheer out to one another. I knew that guy was cool.

As I approach the finish line I pick up to a sprint, pumping my arms to propel my legs forward. I remember my reasons for being here.

All of the things that brought me here, all of the things I fought against that almost stopped me from being here, all of the reasons I will continue moving forward from here.

Rather than a medal, today I receive a face mask upon crossing the finish line. There is no photographer or post-race party. Still, though, crossing that finish line makes me feel so alive.

I am healthy. I am strong. I am confident.

Some days are tougher than others and I’ve still got a long way to go. But no matter what—I will continue to tri.

Against all odds, race director Fred Rzymek made it happen. I spoke with the longtime race director after the triathlon to gain some insight.

Rzymek believes it will be “well into the third quarter of 2021 before events are even close to what is considered normal.”

Normally, the Top Gun tri gets several hundred to 1,000 athletes. This year, Pinellas County capped the race at 250.

“After 30 years of producing events, this has been the hardest time I can remember—and I have seen a lot. We have produced during recession, hurricanes, oil spills, red tide—nothing as bad as this,” says Rzymek. What moves him to push forward is the athletes. “We all need to stay motivated in the best and worst of times… keeps the crazy away.” Indeed.

I also spoke with Chris Lauber who, with his wife Rya, runs the Florida Road Races. Lauber has been directing races for 20 years and calls race directors the “motivators and facilitators.”

This year, the race director duo is focusing on building virtual races until in-person races can resume. Participants can join Facebook groups and post about their training to help motivate others; virtual race participants receive medals once they submit their results.

As person who uses fitness to maintain both physical and mental health, I can appreciate everything race directors are doing to help athletes stay motivated.

Will 2021 be a typical year for athletes?

Not by a long shot. But with race directors like Rzymek plus Chris and Rya Lauber, I am confident it will be as good as it possibly can. All we can do is tri.

The good news is that, finally, Dorothy, Sean and her brother Julian (a remarkable Rupert Grint) may all be working toward a common goal, which is finding baby Jericho, who last was seen being carried off by Leanne and the cult last year.

Being a film and TV critic has its perks, and while I can’t tell you what happens in the first seven episodes of the second season, I am happy to report that things get even crazier and the stakes become significantly higher as it appears the Turners may have incurred some Biblical wrath for their poor parenting choices.

“Servant” is the kind of show that people watch just to get a glimpse behind the curtain at how the inexplicably wealthy and privileged live and operate. It features characters who don’t drive themselves, or they own self-driving cars. They

★★★½ 30 minute-episodes, Apple TV+ It’s a complicated relationship that I share with M. Night Shyamalan. On the one hand, three of his films—“Signs,” “Unbreakable” and “Split”—are among my favorite genre movies of all time. But then I wrote a pretty scathing review of “Glass,” and honestly, I haven’t heard from him since. I’m not sure if he’s ghosting me or what.

Regardless, there’s no denying that Shyamalan is a master when it comes to crafting a story hook, and clearly he has an eye for when others do it too. Case in point, Tony Basgallop, who created “Servant,” one of the flagship shows exclusive to Apple TV+, which Shyamalan both serves as executive producer and occasional director.

“Servant” is a wacky stew of conflicting narratives that somehow manages to keep you engrossed. If you’ve seen the first 10 episodes from Season One, then you know exactly what I mean. The show chronicles the personal struggles of Dorothy and Sean Turner (Lauren Ambrose and Toby Kebbell), two mid-level Philadelphia celebrities—he’s a chef and she’s a local television reporter. The Turners lost their son, Jericho, in a tragic yet avoidable accident, Dorothy lost her mind and Sean agreed to a cockamamie scheme to lure Dorothy back to lucidity by introducing a Reborn doll in Jericho’s place.

The first season explored the consequences of tricking Dorothy, which included her hiring a nanny, Leanne (Nell Tiger Free), to care for the doll and the revelation that Leanne had the ability to resurrect Jericho, or a facsimile of the child. It ended with a bunch more batshit revelations, including that Leanne was born into a religious cult and the tease that she might be divine, as in receiving orders straight from God. Whoa.

throw dinner parties that are nearly upended by not one, not two, but three seismic events, and yet they continue on toward dessert undeterred.

They work, but not in the same way that you and I work. And they’re assholes, truthfully, with few redeeming qualities, and yet we still tune in.

All of this is meant as complimentary because it’s those arms-length differences that make the Turners so infuriatingly compelling.

I’m not sure if I’m hooked because I hope to see some grand comeuppance or because I’m secretly jealous of Sean’s massive wine cellar and his gorgeous four-story brownstone. This, however, I do know: “Servant” is a better show in its second season, and that’s what matters.

“Bloody Hell”

★★★★ 93 minutes, streaming One of the best festival favorites from 2020 has finally arrived to stream, and I simply cannot implore you enough to rent or buy “Bloody Hell.” From Ben O’Toole’s masterful, almost effortless turn as Rex, a douche-y but lovable lunk, to writer Robert Benjamin’s unbelievably twisted scenarios, “Bloody Hell” is a gory fairy tale that never fails to surprise or delight.

After Rex goes full action hero to singlehandedly thwart a bank robbery in Boise, Idaho, only to be tried and convicted because one of

the robbers killed a teller, Rex leaves the U.S. after eight years in prison to seek peace in Finland. What he finds instead is literal hell.

He’s captured, loses an appendage and finds himself strung up by a cannibalistic family of psychopaths. He also meets Alia (Meg Fraser), the only sane one of the bunch, and rediscovers his inner action hero to save the day and get the girl. “Bloody Hell” is bloody, indeed, not to mention hysterical, and wholly original.

“Battle in Space: The Armada Attacks”

★★½ 90 minutes, streaming Pro tip: If ever you find yourself scrolling through titles on your favorite streaming platform and you come across a new production by Hewes Pictures, it’s a safe bet that you won’t be disappointed.

“Battle in Space” is the third sci-fi or horror film that I’ve seen from Hewes, and they all share the same hallmarks. They’re typically told in short stories, like an anthology, showcase above-average special effects and usually feature solid acting. While this may be my least favorite Hewes title, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a watch, especially if you’re stuck at home and you’ve nearly depleted your Netflix queue.

A record residential sale went down in Clearwater late last year.

n iconic home in Clearwater with a history of record sales, has once again sold for a historic price. Century Oaks, a massive compound in Clearwater, was listed as high as $19.75 million over the last couple years, but recently sold on Dec. 23 for $9.3 million, according to Multiple Listing Service data.

The transaction was actually the biggest residential sale of 2020, reports the Tampa Bay Times.

The home had two listing agents, Jennifer Zales and Martha Thorn of Coldwell Banker Residential Real Estate. The identity of the buyer is unknown.

Located at 802 Druid Rd. S, this 28,000-square-foot estate comes with a 16,000-square-foot main house and a

5,200-square-foot guest house, which have a combined 16 bedrooms and 20 bathrooms. It also includes two pools, two tennis courts, a grand ballroom, a movie theater, a historic bell tower, terraced gardens, a ten car garage, and a 60-foot covered boat dock.

Essentially, you’re buying a personal resort.

Named after its giant trees, Century Oaks was built in 1915 on the same site as Fort Harrison, which was a strategic military post during the Second Seminole War. The property changed hands quite a few times over the years, but just three years ago it was purchased by a couple from Dubai, who bought the estate for a record $11.18 million. Designated Safe And Sound Venue On Jan. 18, Florida added more than 8,000 new cases of coronavirus and 142 deaths; Tampa Bay posted 1,435 coronavirus cases and 42 deaths Sunday. On Monday, The Tampa Bay Times pointed out that large local hospitals, like Tampa General Hospital and Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, only had “a handful of ICU beds available as of Sunday afternoon.” And while more than a million people have been vaccinated in a state where the positivity rate is averaging 11% weekly, the latest state numbers offer several thousands of reasons to stay home.

That’s several thousand reasons to stay home, but the local music scene is still trying to figure out how to get back on its feet.

We’ve marked the gigs at venues that have joined a local (for now) Tampa-based “Safe & Sound” initiative that pledges to strictly enforce limited capacity, mask wearing and social distancing.

Local newgrass-folk outfit Boxcar Hollow pays tribute to Phish frontman Trey Anastasio & co. this weekend at Hideaway Cafe. Whether its cover of “Bouncing around the Room” is a shorter album-style take or an hour-long multi-directional jam, the Matt Weiss-led band should do justice to Phish’s vision. Black Honkeys Multiple Best of the Baywinning band Black Honkeys is hitting Northern Pinellas at Palm Harbor’s Bogota Kitchen and Bar’s Soul Food Sunday. The funk-jazz ensemble has tried to keep busy in the pandemic, though it can’t compare with the full time gigs it got pre-Covid.

And while you absolutely shouldn’t out your boyfriend, WEASS, you could raise the general subject of sexual safety and see how this guy reacts. If he seems reasonable—particularly if he mentions being on PrEP too—he’s probably not gonna freak out about your boyfriend being HIV-positive for the exact same reason you didn’t: there’s zero chance your boyfriend could infect him with HIV. (We’re both assuming this guy isn’t HIV-positive himself, WEASS, which he might be.) If he seems reasonable you should encourage your boyfriend to disclose to him. Being told it’s no big deal from someone your boyfriend wants to fuck before he fucks him could help your boyfriend feel less insecure about his HIV status.

Finally, you can’t order your boyfriend to come out to his mom about being HIV-positive, WEASS, but you might inspire him to. He obviously worries people will judge him or shame for being HIV-positive; that’s one of the reasons he hid it from you—and, yes, he should have disclosed his HIV status to you sooner. He obviously underestimated you: you didn’t reject him when you stumbled over his meds after tearing apart the cupboards in his absence while you were searching for—what was it again? Oh, right: a multivitamin.

(Sure.) Anyway, WEASS, tell your boyfriend he’s most likely underestimating his mother in the same way he underestimated you—then let him make his own decisions about who to tell and when.

I don’t think your boyfriend is morally obligated to disclose that he’s HIV-positive to a casual sex partner, WEASS, but in some states he is legally obligated to disclose that fact. While rarely enforced, these HIV disclosure laws almost always have the opposite of their intended effect. Instead of creating a culture of testing and disclosure, these laws disincentivize getting tested—because someone who doesn’t know they’re HIV-positive can’t get in trouble for failing to disclose.

These laws were passed decades ago, back when contracting HIV was perceived—mostly accurately—as a death sentence. But they don’t reflect what it means to have HIV today or to sleep with someone who has HIV today. Having even unprotected sex now with someone who is HIV-positive and has an undetectable viral load is less risky than having protected sex with someone who hasn’t been tested. Condom or no condom, the HIV-positive guy with an undetectable viral load—undetectable thanks to meds like the ones your boyfriend is taking—can’t infect someone with HIV. Undetectable = untransmissible.

But a guy who assumes he’s HIV-negative because he was the last time he got tested or because he’s never been tested? That guy could be HIV-positive and could infect someone with HIV—even if he does
