THE BEAUTY OF A WORLD LIES IN THE DIVERSITY OF ITS PEOPLE.

F

rom its earliest days, Tampa has thrived on the diversity of its people. Cuban cigar rollers and African-American musicians helped lay the foundation for a modern metropolis that remains a magnet for fortune-seekers from across the country and around the world. Every newcomer adds their own unique flavor to the mix of local life. Visitors may even get to read about the city in their native tongue thanks to La Gaceta, the country’s only trilingual newspaper. Simply put, its multicultural charm is Tampa’s greatest treasure.

An essential ingredient in this melting pot? The city’s diverse LGBTQ community. Their energy and style helped foster the creative ferment of Ybor City, where fabulous celebrations like Guavaween and legendary night spots like Tracks brought together a cross-section of the city, from artists to politicians to entrepreneurs. In 2007, gay and gay-friendly businesses in the area formed the GaYbor District Coalition, which helped revive annual pride celebrations. The Tampa Pride Diversity Parade and Street Festival, as well as events like Pride on the

Mayor Castor concurs. “One comment that I hear more than anything is how friendly this city is, and how accepting we are of everyone. I don’t know if you could boil a city’s reputation down to one sentence that would be better than that.” Tampa has a unique sense of community and, as Rev. Glenn Dames, Ph.D of the Allen Temple AME Church said, “Everyone seeks to make you family.” The city is big enough to have everything you could want, but small enough to make you feel important. “You get that feeling that ‘I’m at home.’”

t’s a great time to be a Tampa Bay sports fan, and that’s putting it lightly. 2020–21 saw all four of Tampa Bay’s top-level men’s pro teams in their league’s finals—with, of course, two of those taking home the trophy. With the recent wins of the V i n c e L o m b a r d i Tr o p h y, Stanley Cup, American League pennant and USL Eastern Conference Championship, it’s safe to say Tampa Bay is the City of Champions.

Sunday means football and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the area’s gridiron gang. Believe you me, this pirate krewe doesn’t need swords to win. Playing under head coach Bruce Arians, famous for his aggressive “no risk-it, no biscuit” coaching style, our boys are bringing home plenty of bread. Thanks to their 31-9 win against the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV, the Bucs became the first team in NFL history to play—and win!—a Super Bowl hosted at their home stadium. Considered the best quarterback of all time, Tom Brady moved down to Tampa Bay in 2020 and led the team to secure their second Super Bowl win. Combine the QB’s scoring power with a consistently suffocating defense and you’re in for a treat when you watch what this champion team can do on the field at Raymond James Stadium.

GOT THE CUP? YUP On the rink at Amalie Arena, the Tampa Bay Lightning took home the Stanley Cup in 2020 and 2021. Awarded annually to National Hockey League’s playoff champions, the Cup can only be hoisted by the best team in hockey. And the Bolts won it twice in a row. But that’s not the only hardware our boys have brought home. Trophies our all-star Bolts hold proud include the Art Ross Trophy, Conn Smythe Trophy and Rocket Richard Trophy, and Andrei Vasilevskiy, the best goaltender in the game, has the Vezina Trophy to prove it.

The Tampa Bay Rays made it to the World Series in 2020 and won their second straight American League East title in 2021 with a record 100

Get your heart beating out of your chest with an exhilarating change of pace by Sam Kent Some people like to relax and just lie around on vacation, and others want adventure and excitement. I'm in the latter group, and these are my top spots in Tampa Bay to get my heart beating a million miles an hour.

There’s nothing like getting back to nature, but add two motorized wheels and it’s even better. At Adventure Family Motorsports, they offer private dirt bike sessions at their ranch. Yes, a dirt bike ranch is a thing and it’s awesome. The ranch has a lot of different terrain to cover, from woods and open fields to sand, and my favorite, mud. Just try not to be behind me when I’m going through a muddy puddle. It’s also a great place for beginners, ages seven and up, as the ranch offers safety training with every package. They’ve got everything from safety equipment to snacks, so you can head over and get riding in no time. Zipping through Florida scrub pines and palm trees is an amazing sensation, and Empower Adventures is a great location to do it. Located in the beautiful Mobby

Bayou Wilderness Preserve, Empower has several features that will dial up the adrenaline on your vacation. Start with the 2½-hour zipline adventure to get your blood going. They also have a 200-foot suspension bridge unlike anything I’ve ever seen—but try not to look down. Try one of their moonlight zip tours and it’ll be just you and the wind howling in your ears as you dart through the darkness. Life feels a little different as you’re sliding down a steel cable. You might be a little tired after zipping through the sky, but there’s no time for lounging around. How about a different kind of rush—like coming face-to-face with ferocious felines, or getting close with some of the more than 1,000 animals from around the world at the award-winning ZooTampa at Lowry Park. Witness wild manatees getting life-saving care, meet a rescued Florida panther, or go behind the scenes to learn more about the incredible conservation work happening each day for the many endangered

Explore Tampa Bay's natural wonders and find your next adventure

Mountain biking in Florida? You bet. At this state park, there are steep grades and trails so challenging that the International Mountain Bicycling Association has given it an EPICS designation. Whether you’re a beginner or expert, there’s a trail for you. Just rent a bike at the fullservice shop and hit the trails for a day full of adventure. For a break, consider fishing at one of the park’s many small lakes, where bass, bluegill and catfish abound; explore the more than 20 miles of hiking trails; or go paddling on the winding Alafia River.

by Jessica Vander Velde

BOYD HILL NATURE PRESERVE Just minutes from sunny Gulf Coast beaches, you’ll discover a quiet park with a variety of landscapes circling tranquil Lake Maggiore. Walk past marshy wetlands or peaceful hammocks featuring Florida’s unique mix of tropical palms, saw palmetto and Spanish-moss-draped oaks. Picnic along the sparkling water of the lake or press farther on the three miles of trails, keeping an eye out for the many species of birds that can be found at this park.

HILLSB OROU GH RIVER STATE PARK For a taste of Real Florida, a visit to the Hillsborough River State Park is a must. Here, alligators sun themselves along the riverbanks and water flows and breaks along the curves of the always-changing river. Hiking trails pass Class II rapids and even include a suspension bridge built by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression.

USF BOTANI CAL G ARDEN S Just minutes from Tampa’s theme parks and nightlife lies 16 acres of exotic plants, including orchids, begonias, palms and carnivorous plants. The botanical gardens are part of the University of South Florida’s School of Geosciences, and they feature more than 3,000 plants, animals and natural habitats. Check the calendar before your visit, as the gardens are host to all sorts of special workshops, yoga classes, plant sales and more.

B OK TOW ER GARD ENS It’s hard not to feel like you’re in a dream as you listen to the carillon’s melody ring out over the lush landscape, swans paddling past. It’s no surprise as this garden was designed by a master: Frederick Law Olmstead, who also designed New York’s Central Park. With separate milieus all over the grounds— hillside resting spots, tropical enclaves, a reflecting pool, wetland boardwalk and butterfly-attracting flowers—it’s easy to find some space and tranquility at Bok Tower Gardens.

TAMPA RIVERWALK

The odds are high that you’ll spot a dolphin or manatee while walking along the 2.6 miles of sidewalk through downtown Tampa. Start at the natural springs at Water Works Park and end at Sparkman Wharf, where there’s a plethora of dining and drink options. Grab an extra moment of Zen by lounging on the vast lawns at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park or by walking the labyrinth at the nearby Tampa Convention Center.

AL LOPEZ PARK Even though this large central Tampa park is just a stone’s throw from Raymond James Stadium, home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, you’ll feel like you’re a world away. The tucked-away boardwalk path circles a lake that’s home to turtles, gators, herons and ducks. Take a rest under towering slash pines or just sit on the dock looking out on the lake as the sun sets.

Setting Tampa Bay apart is that, having been built on the Hillsborough River, it built upon its heritage by combining an entertainment district, recreational trail, pedestrian walk, shopping district, bicycle path, historic district and several urban greenspaces into an all-encompassing

I N T H E BEG I NNI NG Although the Hillsborough River flows from north to south, the Tampa Riverwalk distance markers roll from south to north. The TECO Line Streetcar offers complimentary transportation across much of downtown and stops by the South Plaza where the Riverwalk’s artistic collage of more than 500 waterfront images provides a sneak preview of what lies ahead. From nearby Port Tampa Bay cruise ships set sail into the Gulf of Mexico, but for a peek at what’s hidden beneath Gulf waters, just step into The Florida Aquarium. Afterward, get lost amid Sparkman Wharf, a creative complex of shops ranging from retail to restaurants. Cotanchobee/Fort Brooke Park could be considered the rapids of the Tampa Riverwalk. It was at Cotanchobee, the Seminole word meaning “where the big water meets the land” — that a military installation was established in 1824. This chapter and more of the region’s history, including 12,000 years of its pre-Columbian past, is explored in the richly detailed Tampa Bay History Center.
