UPFRONT PUBLIC SQUARE REMAINS BUS-LESS AS CITY STUDIES OPTIONS

THIS WEEK

THE CITY OF CLEVELAND HAS now completed its studies of traffic patterns on Public Square, according to a City Hall spokesman.

The studies were undertaken at the behest of Mayor Frank Jackson, who wanted intel gathered postRNC to determine whether or not buses should be allowed on Superior Avenue, in the lane through the Square built expressly for them.

The city is now reportedly “in discussions” with partners and stakeholders, but the spokesman could not offer a timeline for when those discussions would conclude.

It has now been exactly one month since buses were supposed to have been let back on Superior Avenue following the RNC. As others continue to note, the current “studying” seems redundant, given that the firm Nelson Nygard conducted a $120,000 study in 2014 which concluded that keeping Superior Avenue open to buses made the most financial sense.

The $50 million Public Square was designed according to those recommendations.

City Hall confirmed that RTA is and always has been part of the studies, discussions and decisionmaking processes, but some have wondered why Joe Calabrese hasn’t been more vocal about the issue.

According to Nelson Nygard estimates, RTA could lose $2.6 million per year if Superior Avenue were to remain closed. That’s an enormous sum of money for an agency that just imposed a fare hike and made small service cuts to plug its current budget hole.

“I don’t feel that I’ve been quiet,” said Joe Calabrese in a recent interview with Scene. “What I’ve said since day one was that the

When information is gathered, there will be a sit-down and hopefully the best decision will be made.”

Calabrese said that, in fact, Mayor Jackson’s decision to restrict bus access on the Square on August 1 did not come as a surprise. (It certainly did to us.)

“Discussions between the city and RTA were happening well prior to August 1,” he said. “We had long known that during the RNC it would be used as a significant asset, which it was, and that the earliest we’d be getting in was sometime

around August 1, which was a date I did throw out there in the MayJune time frame. Really, the Mayor just wants to do the right thing, and ask his traffic people and security people, safety people, along with input from my staff, to look at the situation to come up with the best plan possible for the future. It’s as simple as that.”

They were discussing the previous

four days of media coverage surrounding the bizarre and tragic events of Aug. 27 that led to 29-year-old Matthew Desha killing 52-year-old Deborah Pearl at the intersection of Richmond and Solon roads.

The group vented and insisted that, at this point, there should be more concrete answers and less speculation over Desha’s troubling past. Samad said it’s hard to shake the feeling that the investigation so far has been “more of a search to find an excuse as to what he did than to get to the bottom of it.” See, in the wake of the shooting, the spotlight has been focused squarely on Desha’s history of post-traumatic stress disorder following a four-year stint with the U.S. Marine Corps.

Shortly after 7 a.m. on Aug. 27, Desha drove through a red light and speared the driver’s side of Pearl’s Ford Taurus. (Pearl, of course, was driving through a green light. She was on her way to work at the South East HarleyDavidson dealership.) Desha’s SUV rolled several times and ended up on its roof. Both drivers survived the impact, but when they emerged from their vehicles, Desha was seen by witnesses gripping a Stag Arms AR-15 rie. He approached Pearl and shot her multiple times, killing her.

Desha was charged with murder.

His case will be sent to a Cuyahoga County grand jury.

Outside Solon City Hall last week, local community leaders and representatives from activist organizations wondered aloud how the case will be treated by the press, by the prosecutor, by the people.

Desha was white, and Pearl was black. Several people oated the idea that this could be considered a hate crime, the targeted murder of a black woman with no other clear motive. “Mr. Desha murdered Mrs. Pearl in a violent, cruel and thoughtless way,â€? Judy Martin said. “This is a hate crime because this is a white man who targeted a black woman speciďŹ cally.â€?

Investigators and police have not publicly determined a motive in the killing. For Pearl’s family and a Northeast Ohio community already ecked with increasing rates of violent crime, a sea of frustration and confusion oods the proceedings. “I’m angry because he did not have to kill her. It was no reason to kill her,â€? Bernita Ashford, one of Pearl’s relatives, said last week at Bedford Municipal Court. “And shoot an innocent woman? Innocent!

Defenseless! She survived the crash, and you murdered her! You murdered her! You murdered Little Deb! You took her away from us.�

The group urged for greater transparency than the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s OfďŹ ce has provided in past high-proďŹ le cases.

OBERLIN PRESIDENT STEPPING DOWN In a statement to the Oberlin community Tuesday morning, president Marvin Krislov said that he will be stepping down at the end of this school year. His ďŹ nal day will be June 30, 2017.

He called serving the Oberlin community an “honor and a privilege� and said that after 10 years at the helm, he knew this was the “right moment� to seek new professional challenges.

Also on his mind, no doubt, was the campus tumult that seemed never to desist last year.

Before Christmas break, Krislov and the Oberlin Board of Trustees were presented with a list of student demands, a list which accused Oberlin of being an “unethical institution� and insisted that the college meet certain diversity hiring and admissions targets, on pain of “a full and forceful response from the community [they] fail to support.�

Krislov responded: “I will not respond directly to any document that explicitly rejects the notion of collaborative engagement.

Many of its demands contravene principles of shared governance.

And it contains personal attacks on a number of faculty and staff members who are dedicated and valued members of this community.�

Speaking of the faculty: In February, assistant professor Joy Karega posted to her social media pages conspiracies about Israeli involvement in 9/11 and tirades blaming Jews for, among other things, the creation of ISIS. Karega’s activities made national headlines and Krislov was caught between the need to defend academic freedom for Karega (who is black, and well-liked on campus) and the urging from the board to “challenge the assertion that there is any justiďŹ cation for these repugnant postings.â€? Karega, last month, was suspended with pay as administrators review her social media posts.

Oberlin has found itself at the center of a number of campus speech and activism issues that overtook the national news cycle in 2015 and 2016. It was the focus of a New Yorker feature by Nathan Heller that examined the views of modern college students who feel maligned and victimized. Connor Friedersdorf at the Atlantic called Oberlin’s campus an instructive outlier.

“Oberlin, where the subculture is unusually influenced by ‘social justice’ activism, can starkly illuminate the particular character of that ideology’s excesses,” he wrote, in a post stemming from student allegations of cultural appropriation in the dining hall.

Krislov did not cite a reason for his imminent departure.

He merely stated that for the upcoming academic year, he will work to be raise additional money for scholarships and support implementation of the college’s Strategic Plan.

“I take great pride in all we have achieved,” he wrote, “and I look forward to working during the coming year to make Oberlin even stronger and to help chart its future.”

NEXUS PIPELINE OPPONENTS ALLEGE FORGERY IN PUBLIC COMMENTS The public comment period for the NEXUS pipeline’s environmental impact statement has ended, and opponents of the project are crying foul. Banding together, representatives from multiple groups are requesting an investigation into what they deem to be hundreds of forged letters of public comment — all in support of the pipeline project.

Michigan resident Paul Wohlfarth spent much of the last month investigating letters from 14 people that praise the pipeline (which is set to run in part through Lorain and Medina counties). He said he contacted those people listed as the authors, and what he learned cast doubts upon the record of public comment. In all, Wohlfarth flagged “possibly 200 comment statements” of dubious origin.

“This is an extremely serious matter,” attorney Terry Lodge wrote in a filing with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission last week. “In one instance, the party purportedly signing the letter has been deceased since 1998.”

“I believe that the FERC comment docket is viewed by some persons and entities as a popularity contest vote for the NEXUS pipeline,” Wohlfarth wrote.

“It appears that there is a belief, which may be accurate, that the Commission will take note of total numbers of comments for an against construction of the pipeline.

Therefore, it is likely that the docket is being treated as the ballot box for this popularity determination and it is deliberately, intentionally and fraudulently being stuffed by persons or entities unknown for the purpose of boosting the seeming public support for the pipeline.”

It remains to be seen what sort of action FERC will take on this matter.

The commission will decide whether to approve the project sometime in the first quarter of 2017.

NEWS LOCKED UP National prison strike turns spotlight toward industry’s problems

By Harlan Spector THANKS TO A MASS INFLUX of inmates, the prison industry is humming like General Motors in the 1960s, except the labor is way cheaper. Exploited is the word, according to prisoners and their advocates. So on Sept. 9, prison inmates are planning what’s said to be an unprecedented national work strike, “a call to action against slavery in America.”

It’s a story you may not hear much about, but one worth paying attention to. Prison demonstrations have been growing across the country in reaction to overcrowding, poor living conditions and unpaid labor at the hand of prison systems and the corporations that profit from them.

In April, inmates at seven Texas prisons went on a work strike to protest living and working conditions.

Prisoners in Alabama, Michigan, California and Wisconsin this year have organized work stoppages and hunger strikes. We’re now looking at the first national strike, maybe the largest coordinated act of resistance in U.S. prison history. The date, Sept. 9, is the anniversary of the nightmarish Attica prison rebellion in 1971. More than 1,000 inmates took over Attica in western New York, demanding better conditions.

Gov. Nelson Rockefeller ordered state police to storm the place, and they shot and killed 29 inmates and 10 hostages.

Prison conditions overall improved after the 1970s, largely due to lawsuits and court orders, says Marc Mauer of The Sentencing Project, a non-profit advocating for criminal justice reform. But with the 1980s crack epidemic came the start of mass

incarceration – tough-on-crime laws that locked up many more low-level offenders, a disproportionate number of them black, for longer periods of time.

The number of people in U.S. prisons and jails is five times what it was in the ‘70s. Ohio’s prison system was built for 38,000 inmates, but it houses more than 50,000 and is expected to grow more. We’re among the worst states for over-incarceration in a country that leads the world in incarcerating its citizens.

There’s enormous profit potential in captivity. Corporations now own a prison in Ohio (the first state to sell a prison), and operate prisons throughout the land. For-profit companies have a piece of the action in health care and food services.

Prisoners work on farms and in factories, and staff call centers

for corporations. They often earn nothing or up to a few dollars a day.

Starbucks, Boeing and McDonalds all have profited off prison labor.

Private prison companies have spent millions lobbying for stricter laws to keep the inmates flowing, and they have occupancy quotas in their contracts. Ohio guarantees payment to Corrections Corporation of America, which owns Ohio’s Lake Erie Correctional Institute, for 90 percent occupancy.

The U.S. Department of Justice in August underscored the failings of corporatization with a stunning announcement that it would end the use of private prisons. The DOJ concluded private prisons are too dangerous, their programs and services are subpar, and they don’t save much money. But that’s only a piece of the federal prison system.

Meanwhile, Ohio insists corporatizing prisons is a money-saver. Through legislation passed last year, the state plans to sell a second state prison, the North Central Correctional Institution in Marion. This is after the 2011 sale of Lake Erie Correctional in Conneaut prompted a state inspection committee and the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio to expose terrible conditions there -- increased violence, rampant drug use, unsanitary food and general dysfunction. There was no running water in certain areas, forcing inmates to shit in bags. The ACLU made a film about it, Prisons for Profit, which premiered at the Cleveland International Film Festival last year.

“Privatization, exploitation of labor, this all branches off the same rotten tree, which is our mass incarceration system,” Mike Brickner of the Ohio ACLU says. “Because of that, all these problems come cascading down.”

North Central Correctional Institution is already privately operated by Management and Training Corp. JoEllen Smith, spokeswoman for the Ohio prison system, says both privately operated facilities “perform in a manner that is safe and secure, as demonstrated by their contractually required accreditation status by the American Correctional Association and compliance with Ohio internal management audit standards.”

Smith did not comment on the prospect of a Sept. 9 prison strike, nor would she answer questions about contracting out prison labor.

But at least one person who helps organize prisoners from the outside said Ohio is among states she expects to have strong participation.

for the Incarcerated Workers Organizing Committee, a new labor organization that has had a hand in strikes in various states. The labor group two years ago spun off from Industrial Workers of the World, a union formed in 1905 and headquartered in Chicago, after prison organizers and outside supporters sought help addressing working and living conditions.

Crispino said more than 800 prisoners affiliate with the group, and there are more supporters who don’t want to be known as members for fear of punishment.

“The prisoners who are getting paid a wage at all for their labor is rare,” she says. “The system is doing exactly what it’s designed to do: Extract as much money off the backs of prisoners as possible.”

A few months ago, incarcerated organizers put out the call to action: “On Sept. 9 of 2016, we will begin an action to shut down prisons all across the country. We will not only demand the end to prison slavery, we will end it ourselves by ceasing to be slaves.”

It would be nice to know how it plays out, but those involved say prisons most certainly will black out communications to whatever extent possible. Ohio had a prison watchdog – a maverick named Joanna Saul, who exposed troubles at Lake Erie Correctional and who called out the state’s food-service vendor for serving up maggots. It’s hard to argue against the need for a watchdog. But Saul apparently ruffled too many feathers in a Republican legislature gaga over corporatizing public services. They forced her out in June.

FEATURE BIG SCREEN PASS Browns tight end Gary Barnidge is a Pro Bowler with a new contract, but he mainly wants to talk about movies and art THE KETCHUP IN BROWNS TIGHT End Gary Barnidge’s B-spot platter — an extra platter requested expressly for said ketchup — has now assumed the precise dimensions of a Cracker Barrel pancake. He’s continuing to squirt, though, and in the meantime he’s asking me to pull no punches in my appraisal of Suicide Squad.

“Be honest,” he says.

I shrug my shoulders and tell him I didn’t care for it.

But that’s not good enough for Big Play Barnidge. The man wants details. He wants analysis. He’s a cinephile, after all, easily the Browns’ most obsessive moviegoer. Every week during the season, he takes 10 lucky fans to the cineplex. It’s a tradition he began during his final season with the Carolina Panthers and one he’s eager to continue for a fifth straight year. The only reason we’ve met here at the Crocker Park B-Spot is because it’s in the shadow of Regal Cinemas, Barnidge’s home theater and the place you’re most likely to find him outside of Berea, FirstEnergy Stadium, and his Westlake home. He’s seeing Sausage Party in 45 minutes.

“Out of 10,” he probes, “what would you give it?”

“Three?” I hazard. “Maybe threeand-a-half.” (I really did not care for Suicide Squad.)

“I give it a five out of 10,” Barnidge says matter-of-factly. “Look, the story was super weak. There was no development with the bad guys, the sister and the brother — I still don’t know who that person is. And for talking that movie up for over a year, you would expect it not to be so poorly executed. Such a poor story. The action was good. Some of the comedy was good. But I felt like it was a Harley Quinn / Deadshot movie, not a Suicide Squad movie.”

Pretty solid takeaways from an NFL player; even from a Renaissance Man like Gary Barnidge, a man on an eternal quest for personal growth. “I’m never satisfied,” he says. “I’m always trying to better myself in some way or another.”

Just recently, for instance, Barnidge bought a piano, having always wanted to play a musical instrument. Among other things, he’s the co-founder of

an international nonprofit, American Football Without Barriers, that hosts a camp abroad every year, hoping to encourage the popularity of American football overseas and nurturing foreign talent in the process. Barnidge is a traveler — three new locations per year is his stated goal — an art enthusiast, and a guardsman and guru of the horror film genre, his personal favorite. He also stands 6’5”, weighs 240 pounds, and is one of the most sticky-fingered tight ends in professional football. In 2015, he was the Browns deadliest Red Zone weapon and he parlayed his success into a 3-year $12 million contract extension he signed with the team in December.

But Gary Barnidge does not want to talk about football.

“Out of ten,” he says, dragging fries through his swamp of ketchup, “what would you give Jason Bourne?”

About football, though, briefly: Barnidge arrived in Cleveland from Carolina for the 2013 season. At the time, he was thought of foremost as a blocking tight end. And besides, the Browns had Jordan Cameron, the athletic stud from USC (who’s also involved with Barnidge’s AFWB Foundation), who was presumed to

be riding the precipice of a career year. In each of Barnidge’s first two workhorse seasons with the Browns, he collected just 13 receptions. He was an unknown and largely untested quantity as a receiver.

That all changed in 2015. Cameron had shorn his locks and set sail for South Beach — those electric teal unis too good to pass up — and Barnidge emerged over both the workaday Jim Dray and the newly acquired Rob Housler as the team’s premiere receiver among the tight end corps. He became a fantasy favorite, anchoring many a team with his 1,043 receiving yards and eye-popping nine touchdowns. (I picked him up, like most people, after his gaudy week three performance against Oakland: six receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown.)

“Did you win your league?”

Barnidge asks.

“Sadly no,” I report. “Third place.”

“Everybody who tells me they won, I tell them I want my three-percent fee.”

Barnidge says he doesn’t feel any pressure or additional burden to repeat his success from last year. Part of that has to do with his team-first attitude — “I don’t really care about individual stats,” he professes — but it also has to do with what he describes as the

exciting young roster.

“We have so many talented weapons around us that I hope they all [put up big numbers]. Then we can spread it out and everybody gets that opportunity.” Barnidge is barreling through an ‘Old-School,’ B-Spot’s take on a fried bologna sandwich. “Then it makes it harder for the defense, too.

I always just want to go in there and do what I’m supposed to do to help the team, do what I can, and that’s all that matters. Everything else will fall into place. I’d take 5 catches and 10 wins and I’d be happy.”

In addition to the roster being exciting, however, it remains undeniably inexperienced. As such, the wins Barnidge so desires may be hard to come by. Still, he speaks highly of the tenor of new Head Coach Hue Jackson’s leadership.

“Hue’s so fast-paced and so energetic,” Barnidge says. “He wants things done and changed now. Not tomorrow, not next week, not next year.

Now. And I think everybody’s buying into that. As long as the guys buy in, everything’s gonna be good and that’s what we’re looking for.”

Barnidge is entering his eighth year in the league, and he knows that, as a veteran, he’s looked up to on and off the field. In the locker room, he says he does what he can to ensure that his tight ends know routes inside and out.

Off the field, he encourages players to interact with fans and give back to the community.

Lest there be any confusion, Gary Barnidge’s favorite movie of all time is Forrest Gump. His favorite horror movie is The Night of the Living Dead, the original version, George Romero’s seminal black-and-white zombie flick from 1968. But the movie that got him into movies, irrevocably, is The Goonies. He was a kid growing up in Jacksonville, Florida. And when he saw The Goonies, on VHS in 1993 — he remembers the year — Barnidge knew he was hooked for life.

“It was a movie that was an entertaining adventure,” says Barnidge, “and as a kid, I was like, ‘This is awesome; I get to go with these guys to find this gold.’ To me, movies give me an escape. It gets me out of | clevescene.com | September 7 - 13, 2016

FEATURE reality for that two-hour block, and I think Goonies got that started.”

He estimates that in 1995, he started watching horror movies in a fanatical way. He fell in love with the genre, in particular the classic fare from the ’80s — Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween.

“It’s an just an escape,” Barnidge reiterates, “and you don’t get many of those in life.”

When Barnidge talks about football, he does so with the recognition that he’s a representative of the Cleveland Browns organization, and that he’s talking to a reporter. He’s heard all the questions before, and his answers, though by no means insincere, are clearly variations on familiar themes.

(E.g. “It’s not about the individual stats; it’s about the team.”) But when he talks about movies, he’s off-script. Across the B-spot booth, crowned in a Red AFWB ballcap and presiding over his premovie meal, he’s in his element.

He comes right out and says that he’s been disappointed with the crop of blockbusters this summer, an opinion with which I enthusiastically agree.

Water.

One of the lesser-known ways Barnidge has come to certify his horror-film fandom is through commissioned works of art. Though he was never an artist as a kid, art is something he says he’s come to appreciate as an adult. He’s converted the basement of his current home outside Jacksonville, where he lives in the offseason, into a home movie theater. He’s decorated it with artwork based on characters from horror movies, all original commissions that he dreamed up.

“For example,” says Barnidge, pleased to explain, “I wanted a picture of Candyman” (The Hellish central villain in the 1992 Virginia Madsen vehicle Candyman). “I thought to myself: Candyman is known for candy, and he always has bees around him.”

He snaps his fingers. “Okay, I got it. I’ll have Pooh Bear sitting down, digging in his honey comb, and Candyman behind him with his hook and the bees everywhere.”

He’s constantly checking out the work of new artists online, both in Cleveland and across the country.

When he stumbles on someone whose work he likes, he’ll buy a piece or two of original art and then inquire about commissions.

“I say, here’s my idea, but you’ll

get free rein. You do what you do.” Barnidge estimates that he’s commissioned work from 10 artists.

Recently, from a local artist, Barnidge commissioned a painting that depicted a roster of horror villains in the boxes of the Mortal Kombat character-select screen.

“I like that one because you have to think about who would beat who, and how they’d do it,” Barnidge says. “It brings up a conversation.”

The piece he’s currently waiting on is a mixed-media “3D-esque” painting of Pennywise the Clown (from the 1990 miniseries IT, based on the Stephen King novel) arm-wrestling one of the Killer Klowns from Outer Space (from the 1988 horror-comedy Killer Klowns from Outer Space) while the other two Killer Klowns stand behind watching.

“It’s funny, but it’s also characters I love,” says Barnidge.

Barnidge loves Pennywise the Clown so much that he dressed up as the villain for Halloween last year. During Joe Thomas’s annual Halloween party at his home, Barnidge says he freaked out his teammates with the costume.

“Joe’s got these two columns in his house,” Barnidge says, “and I stood between the columns with my mask, holding my balloons. They guys thought it was fake, thought it was like

a statue. They’d be like, ‘this is new,’ and when they’d come up I’d jump and scare them.”

Every Wednesday this season, as in seasons past, Gary Barnidge will Tweet a trivia question to his followers.

is more family-oriented, because of Thanksgiving. December might be Christmas movies.”

And it’s not like these weekly excursions are the only times Barnidge goes to the movies. He says that despite the busy NFL season, he usually manages to go twice a week, and watches more at home. His personal collection of DVDs and Blu-Rays is the stuff of locker-room legend. He watches TV too, of course. (He’s currently catching up on The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, if you were curious.)

But one of the most important elements of the weekly outings for Barnidge is that it gives players a regular opportunity to interact with fans. Barnidge invites his teammates, and often, a handful will tag along.

“Some of the guys have really bought into it,” he says. “I tell them, get there 30 minutes early. I say, I want you to talk with people, interact with them. This is just one way we can give back. The fans come out and support us every week and without the fans, we wouldn’t be anything. This is just one way of repaying that.”

Hip to Barnidge’s popularity, one of the local Hollywood publicity companies reached out to Barnidge and now occasionally lets him “host” an advance screening with an increased number of tickets to distribute. His social media presence is dominated by movie posters and invitations to these special events. Last Christmas, when Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened, Barnidge rented out an entire auditorium at Crocker Park and opened it up to fans, first-come, first-served. He plans to do the same this year.

And there, Big Play Barnidge will walk among the fans in the aisles, making small-talk about their favorite flicks, a benign king among his subjects, a superhero among mere mortals— “I just wanted to say,” says a younger guy in khakis and a buttondown, who has tentatively approached our B-spot booth. “Go Browns.”

“Thanks, I appreciate that,” says Barnidge.

If the tight end’s weekly movie outings seem superheroic to Cleveland fans, his efforts with his nonprofit American Football Without Barriers should seem doubly so. It’s Barriers, not Borders, Barnidge stresses, because their work isn’t exclusively international and because they like the idea of “breaking the mold.” Along with co-founder Breno Giacomini, who plays for the New York Jets,

Barnidge hosts football camps in the United States and abroad targeted at low-income, at-risk youth. The AFWB camps are 100 percent free and are open to both boys and girls.

“We want these kids to enjoy the sport and love it like we do,” he says, “give them the opportunities that we had. Especially internationally, these kids don’t get that opportunity. We’re trying to give them another outlet and teaching teamwork and camaraderie.

That’s what it’s all about.”

In addition to the camps, when Barnidge travels he cherishes the opportunity to experience foreign cultures. When AFWB hosted a camp in China, he visited the Great Wall.

When they went to Brazil, he saw Christ the Redeemer. When they were in Egypt last year, he ventured off to see the Pyramids and the tomb of King Tut. Next year, Barnidge says, they’ve narrowed down their options to either Japan or Finland, and the cultural opportunities in both locations excite him.

“We want to mix it up,” Barnidge says, “do as many continents as possible.”

Barnidge intends to continue his nonprofit work after he retires, ramping up the international outreach to three camps per year and expanding to seven in the U.S. Barnidge says he approaches traveling with the Browns for away games in the same way he approaches international travel. “You just have to dive in,” he says. And he says he approached Cleveland, where he’d never been before he arrived on the roster, the same way.

“You definitely have to see what Cleveland has to offer,” he says. “I’ve been to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I’ve done all the museums downtown. I’ve been to the Christmas Story house. I’ve done Cedar Point.

I’ve been to the Flats. I’ve seen what Cleveland has to offer. And it’s awesome.”

But what about the fans?

“The fans are very diehard,” he says. “And that’s what you want as a player. You don’t want it when you’re not doing well, because that’s when everybody starts coming at you, but it’s all in good fun. Obviously, this is a hardworking, tight-knit community, and it’s awesome, but it is eye-opening just to see how die-hard they are.”

Asked, then, if he thought the ESPN documentary Believeland captured the spirit of Cleveland’s tortured sports history, Barnidge shakes his head.

“I haven’t seen it yet,” he admits.

“But it’s on my Netflix to-do list.”

One of the last living auteurs, the guy puts some serious time and effort into the making of an album. With One More Time With Feeling, director Andrew Dominik delves into the “tragic backdrop” of the writing and recording of Cave’s new album, Skeleton Tree. Interwoven throughout the Bad Seeds’ filmed performance of the new album are interviews and footage shot by Dominik, accompanied by Cave’s intermittent narration and improvised rumination. is one of the most talented groups of artists in the region. They proved it earlier this year by winning the annual Drawn & Quartered event at HEDGE Gallery – defeating Dr. Sketchy Cleveland, Murray Hill Life Drawing Group and West Side Markers in the eighth annual live drawing event. For this year’s annual NOIS member show, the group’s theme is “All Things Cleveland.” Drawing inspiration from our city’s history, environment, people, cityscapes and more, NOIS members have created new work for this CLE-centric art show.

Separate Solo Shows Returning from a brief summer break, 2731 officially reopens its doors this weekend with a reception for its latest exhibitions, pairing artists Andrea Joki and Pipo Nguyen in separate solo shows. Andrea Joki’s Flickering Sky features new paintings on canvas and works on paper created during her recent residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts, a repurposed army barracks located across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.

Similarly, Pipo Nguyen-duy’s AnOther Expedition was created during a threemonth residency in Monet’s Garden

in Giverny, France. During his stay, Nguyen-duy created 800 cyanotype prints on French watercolor paper.

The prints were created using samples collected from Monetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famous garden.

Gospel Brunch The monthly Gospel Brunch has been a spiritual Sunday staple for years at the House of Blues, but it recently added a new choreographer.

AGAINST THE GRAIN Oberlin gallery hosts works by conceptual artist Fred Wilson

ON TUESDAY, AUG. 30, OBERLIN’S Allen Memorial Art Museum debuted both a new exhibition and site-specific installation by world renowned conceptual artist Fred Wilson. Locals may remember Wilson from his solo exhibition, Fred Wilson: Works 20042011, at the Cleveland Museum of Art from December 2012 to May 2013.

Returning to Northeast Ohio, Wilson draws inspiration for his new work directly from Oberlin’s history.

Born in the Bronx in 1954, Wilson earned his BFA from SUNY Purchase College. Wilson has represented the U.S. at both the Venice Biennale (2003) and the Cairo Biennale (1992).

A 1999 recipient of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation’s “genius” grant, Wilson is best known for his re-interpretation and re-contextualization of museum collections. Challenging assumptions of culture, history and display practices, Wilson has been encouraging viewers to reconsider how we see and what we think we know since his innovative 1992 exhibition Mining the Museum at the Maryland Historical Society. Simply put, by altering objects’ context, Wilson changes their meaning.

At Oberlin, the New York based artist presents a new perspective on the history of Oberlin College and the Allen Memorial Art Museum’s collection with a site-specific installation in the museum’s King Sculpture Court. Drawing objects from the Allen Memorial Art Museum’s 14,000 piece collection and other local collections, Wilson

will juxtapose objects and concepts from Oberlin’s 183-year history.

Wilson’s Wildfire Test Pit returns the King Sculpture Court to its origins as a space for displaying classical sculpture.

“We are delighted to collaborate with Fred Wilson and to present his insightful perspective on the Allen Memorial Art Museum’s collection and Oberlin history,” says Denise Birkhofer, the museum’s curator of modern and contemporary art. “The Allen is particularly excited to be the first museum to organize two simultaneous exhibitions by Wilson, juxtaposing his fabricated artworks with his installation-based practice.”

Wilson’s primary inspiration for Wildfire Pit Test is renowned artist Edmonia Lewis, who began her art studies at Oberlin College. After a controversial incident with “spiked” wine, Lewis was put on trial and

international success in Europe.

Simultaneously, the museum’s Ellen Johnson Gallery showcases works created by Wilson to similarly encourage viewers to rethink assumptions of traditional historical narratives and display practices.

Black to the Powers of Ten includes work created from 2003 to 2014.

Exploring concepts of race, memory, meaning and time, the exhibition includes glass works, paintings, sculpture, prints and video.

On Thursday, Sept. 8, Wilson will be on hand for an opening reception for the museum’s fall exhibitions.

Wilson will be discussing his work informally during the reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Later this fall, Wilson returns to Oberlin for a more formal presentation on his recent work and influences, as well as his previous installations at other museums and cultural institutions. Wilson’s talk

beaten by unknown local townspeople at a time during the Civil War when Oberlin wasn’t as progressive as its college. Although ultimately acquitted, the incident continued to plague Lewis, and about a year later, she was accused of stealing art supplies from the college. The Allen Memorial Art Museum was founded in 1917, primarily as a teaching museum, serving as a resource for students, faculty and staff at Oberlin, as well as the surrounding community. Five years ago, the museum underwent two years’ worth of renovations, which received USGBC LEED Gold certification. The museum is known for its art rental program, dating back to the 1940s. Each semester, students camp out in front of the north gate of the museum for first selection of original prints and paintings by renowned artists such as Dali, Warhol and Picasso. For $5 each semester, students can hang these pieces of art history on their dorm room walls.

MOVIES LANDING ON WATER Sully struggles to turn a flight captain’s heroic act into cinematic gold

By Jeff Niesel DIRECTOR CLINT EASTWOOD (Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby, American Sniper) loves a good story about an American hero. If the hero has a flaw, as was the case with American Sniper, all the better. As a result, Eastwood is the perfect guy to helm Sully, a film about how US Airways pilots Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger (Tom Hanks) and First Officer Jeffery “Jeff” Skiles (Aaron Eckhart) landed US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River to save the lives of their passengers.

Sully and Jeff don’t call themselves heroes — they maintain that they were just “doing their jobs” as they made a split second decision to land on the water after a “bird strike” took out both of their engines.

While the film features some terrific highly dramatic moments as it captures both the rescue and the courtroom-like drama that ensued in the wake of the crash landing, it also struggles to provide a compelling narrative. There’s lots of repetition here as we see the plane’s lift off and emergency landing take place several times. And few characters other than Sully are fully developed. Even the 100 or so passengers on the plane essentially remain nameless in the movie. It opens area wide on Friday.

An adaptation of Sullenberger’s book Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters, the film details the stress Sully felt as a result of the subsequent FAA investigation that suggested he might have been able to safely land the plane at a nearby airport. Eastwood goes to great lengths to show how these

claims disturbed Sully, who often has nightmares about crashing into buildings or being vilified in the media. In fact, the movie starts with a scene in which Sully imagines flying into a building rather than successfully landing on the Hudson.

Even his heart rate remains elevated in the wake of the landing.

Eastwood initially takes us to the airport. We see Sully grab a sandwich at the terminal before he heads to the gate. He and Jeff run through a checklist to make sure everything on the plane works. The takeoff goes smoothly until they hit a flock of geese and both engines lose propulsion. The two remain calm as they mentally calculate (“I eyeballed,”

Sully later tells investigators) whether they can make it to a landing strip. When they realize they won’t make it to an airport, Sully yells out, “Brace for impact.”

The plane swooshes into the freezing Hudson River, and passengers scramble to get off the thing and avoid falling into the frigid waters.

The real drama comes in the wake of the landing, and the film’s second half benefits as a result. Hanks really shines as the embattled Sully who gets grilled by investigators and then has to put up with his nagging wife Lorraine (Laura Linney), who regularly calls to remind him of pending bills and urge him to return to flying as soon

as possible so they can continue to pay their mortgage.

While Hanks is terrific throughout the movie as the conflicted Sully, Linney fails to make Lorraine more than a caricature — though the script might really be to blame for the character’s shortcomings.

Be sure to stay through the credits to see footage of the real crash and of the crew and passengers, who assembled as a group to celebrate their survival story.

EAT A “WHAT’LL YA HAVE” HIDEAWAY Mike and Dee’s Diner keeps it simple and delicious ALONG WITH EVERY ADDITIONAL barstool, table, chair, menu item, specialty cocktail and employee comes untold additional headaches. Add too many to the mix and we’ll likely be seeing that business on the next episode of “Restaurant Impossible.” While some operators elect to go big or bust, others follow the mantra that the smaller and simpler, the better – both for them and us diners.

For 20 years, that’s been the unwavering path of Mike Moyer.

In 1997, Moyer purchased Alvie’s Gateway Grille, the last of a trio of popular downtown Alvie’s branded restaurants birthed

by Alvin Friedlander, father to Moxie and Red founder Brad, proof that restaurant ownership is a hereditary trait. Moyer ran that well-trafficked spot just off Public Square for 16 years before jettisoning the greet-and-seat grind for the boxed-lunch life of corporate catering, a sideline he developed and expanded while running Alvie’s.

“But I’ve always wanted to go back to doing the breakfast and lunch thing, serving this kind of food – I’ll call it comfort food,” Moyer says. Asked what specifically he favors about this type of restaurant, he adds, “It’s the hours – being able to have a life.

At least that’s the way it’s been for most of my life, but right now, we’re working our butts off.”

The other half of that “we” is wife Diana, who’s been at his side every step of the way. And the reason they are working their tushies off is a little breakfast and lunch diner called Mike & Dee’s, a gem of a joint tucked inside the Holiday Inn Express on Euclid. Formerly Sammy’s Grille, the spot changed hands earlier this summer.

For such a small operation, there’s no shortage of things to do, Moyer assures me. From making the matzo ball soup and “famous” ranch dressing to frying up bacon and hand-forming the Angus beef burger patties, it’s a bottomless todo list. “And originally, I thought it was too small,” he says of the 48seat diner.

In the morning, that flattop fills up with breakfast chestnuts like french toast, pancakes and three-egg omelets. At lunchtime, that expanse of hot steel is buried beneath an acre of oozing patty melts, grilled cheese sammies, and quesadillas, long a staple in Moyer’s repertoire.

No complaints from my breakfast companion, who ordered the #1 ($6.50), a pair of eggs, home fries, bacon and toast. Breakfast sandwiches – on toast, bagels or muffins – and wraps are popular with the grab-and-go commuters who work in the immediate area.

This is a bona fide “what’ll ya have” hideaway, where servers greet regular customers by name and genuinely seem to care about the answer to the question “how is everything?” Weak coffee fills the mugs until your corned beef hash ($6.95) makes a landing, topped, in my case anyway, with over-easy eggs and accompanied by buttered

with the kind of meat you don’t have to close your eyes to enjoy. Real roast turkey (not that slimy, watery stuff) and smoky ham are interwoven among three slices of toasted Italian bread along with bacon, lettuce, tomato and ranch dressing. A mountain of crispy, salty fries were pulled from the fryer at the optimal moment in time. Corned beef is

king here, served straight up on rye, griddled with swiss and kraut Reuben-style, or shoehorned between two fried potato pancakes for those whose only plans include a long nap in a cool, dark room.

Homemade soups like split pea or matzo ball ($4.50), a flavorful, peppery broth overtaken by one large, soft, airy orb, are served with the customary packets of Saltines.

Chili and other substantial brews and broths will begin making cameos as the weather cools down.

For now, there are only a handful of heartier entrees like hot open-face turkey or roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy on the menu, but Moyer intends to step up his comfortfood game when he’s got a better handle on the fledgling operation.

After 20 years on his own, not to mention the decades spent toiling for others, he knows not to bite off more than he can chew.

ON THE CORNER OF LINCOLN Park in Tremont, Merchant Street Provisions & Eatery (2391 W. 11th Street, 216-415-5865) is the new kid on the block. The casual market and sandwich shop has been open for just six weeks, but already there have been some big changes as restaurateur John McDonnell gets a feel for the surrounding neighborhood.

Launched with a different chefpartner, Merchant Street is now in the hands of Robbie Ackerman, formerly of Toast, who has stepped up to the plate to design the current menu. This casual corner storefront offers made-to-order sandwiches including a Cuban Press, Chicken Salad, and Veggie, all priced at either $7.50 or $8.50.

“In about two weeks we’ll have a whole new menu that’s much larger with more made-to-order seasonal items,” Ackerman explains. “People haven’t really been receptive to the grab-and-go food we’ve done.” Those items included quinoa bowls, black bean and corn salad, and pasta salads.

Flying under the radar for the brief time they’ve been open has allowed McDonnell to get a feel for how best to utilize the space.

“I’ve always been in restaurants, so the market concept is new to me.

It’s been a learning curve. I loved the building, but always hated how they broke it up; it was very disconnected. We tried to figure out the space,” he says of the building that previously housed Ligali’s, Porcelli’s, Bistro on Lincoln Park and Sage Bistro, to name a few.

Initially, the idea for the bright and airy storefront was to stock shelves lining the north wall with bagged grains and spices from Urban Herbs, fine olive oils, sauces and pastas. “We’re going to keep some of this stuff, but definitely focus more on cheeses, charcuterie, sandwiches, salads and our wines,” McDonnell notes.

The cheese and sliced meat selections have been a hit, most

of which is procured from the Catanese Brothers and Mondo Italiano. Ackerman and McDonnell both gush over the quality of the produce the shop receives on Saturdays from Patrick McCafferty, who sources to a select few area fine restaurants. The produce not used in the kitchen is sold out of open coolers, but by the time I arrive midweek only a handful of heirloom tomatoes, zucchini and yellow squash remain.

“There’s no invoice, it’s just whatever he feels like bringing,” says Ackerman. “I come in Monday to a big surprise.” It’s that type of improvisation that has kept Market Street on its toes, being able to adapt to the changing needs of customers.

“We’ve had an opportunity to tweak things and nail down a solid menu.”

Beers and wine pours ($5, $7, $9) can be enjoyed in the Provisions section of the space, out on the patio overlooking the park, or in an adjacent sunroom that serves as the wine showroom and sitting area. “We want to beef this up, too,” McDonnell says, gesturing at the sparse shelves filled with reds.

Though they’re focusing more on charcuterie boards and wine pairings during the late afternoon, they’ll still tie all of the products sold in the store with the menu of the market and eatery. Merchant Street Provisions is open from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

In the adjacent space, a fresh coat of paint is being rolled onto the wall where a long bar and 50-seat dining room will welcome guests to Market Street Eatery. “We’re putting two sexy booths in the back like we had at Fulton Grill,” McDonnell says, adding that he hopes for the space to be ready in two months. The restaurant will be full service and serve a Cal-Mediterranean menu.

“People are finally starting to get us,” he says.

SHABU-SHABU FANS WERE elated at the news that USHABU (2173 Professor Ave.) would open in Tremont. But two years have passed since Scene broke the news and diners were right to question if the hot pot joint would ever open.

Rest assured, says management, the restaurant is on track to open before the end of September.

Owners Hsiao Jung Liu and Haowei Chiu have been busy readying the 700-square-foot eatery, formerly home to Eye Candy Gallery, into an elegant 25-seat bistro that will serve traditional shabu-shabu and Asian-style small plates.

Each individual seat is outfitted with its own induction burner topped with a clay hot pot. The soup pot is filled with a choice of three broths – ginger-chicken, spicy miso, and kombu dashi – in which various meats, fish, seasonal veggies and noodles are cooked and eaten Thinly sliced pieces of heritage breed pork, wagyu beef, lamb or seafood are briefly dunked in the simmering broth (the term shabushabu translates to swish-swish, the movement of the ingredients in the soup) to cook them. They are then dipped in sauces like sweet sesame, ponzu and soy-vinegar and eaten with rice. Udon noodles are added to the remaining broth and consumed last.

Pan-Asian small plates like

Taiwanese oyster omelet, Hakkastyle squid stir fry and a few other starters will join the concise menu.

For the time being, USHABU does not have a liquor license.

General manager Michael Flaherty, who has worked at L’Albatros and EDWINS, says there’s a certain beauty in the scale and scope of USHABU that attracted him to the position.

Of large, ambitious eateries, he says, “It’s hard to staff, it’s hard to train and it’s hard to put out a consistently high-level product and experience. With a tiny place and small staff you can really create a culture where you’re training people, bringing them up to be very attentive to detail, very hospitable and gracious.”

The name USHABU is a play on the phrase “you shabu.”

FAUX BRITISH TAVERN THE PUB HAS CLOSED ITS BEACHWOOD SPOT The Cincinnati-based Tavern Restaurant Group has pulled the plug on its last remaining freestanding Cleveland-area Pub concept. The Pub, located at 26300 Cedar Rd. in Beachwood, closed abruptly last month. That location lasted just two years.

“This was not an easy decision, but closing our Beachwood location allows us to focus on other, more profitable restaurants and is therefore in the best interest of our company,” David Bell, Director of Operations for Tavern Restaurant Group, said in a release. “We are very grateful to the Beachwood community for their patronage and to our team members for their

CHARDON-BASED NOCE GOURMET PIZZA TO OPEN SPOT IN TREMONT You can soon add Noce Gourmet Pizza to the list of pizza providers in Tremont. The popular Chardonbased restaurant has been going strong for almost a decade, but management feels the time is right to install an outpost in the big city.

“We want to be downtown and the opportunity popped up, so we’re rolling the dice,” explains owner John Tomlinson, who along with son Jay run the operation.

“We’ll see what happens. We think we have a good product. There’s not a lot of science behind it.”

Noce made news a couple years back when it claimed honors as “Northeast Ohio’s Best Pizza” in a vote-herding competition spearheaded by the Northeast Ohio Media Group. But for years before that, the popular pizza shop has been pleasing customers with its fresh take on the Italian staple.

“It’s kind of a combo between New York style and West Coast,” Tomlinson adds. “The crust is like a baguette consistency — thin, crispy. crusty.”

Unlike Neapolitan-style pies, Noce’s undergo a long, slow bake in moderate oven, allowing the crust to support a generous array of fresh toppings. Those toppings come from small farms like New Creation and Great Lakes Growers, among others. Staples like that airy dough as well as salad dressings are made in-house.

Unlike the full-service Chardon location, the Tremont spot will be a strictly take-out and delivery operation. The 1,000-square-foot storefront, formerly Big Guy’s Pizza (2539 W. 10th St.), will carry the same menu of salads and two dozen pizzas, with versions available in slice or pie form.

Look for Noce to open in the next couple months.

MUSIC TALKING THRASH Slayer’s Kerry King and Anthrax’s Scott Ian reflect on 35 years of making mayhem

By Jeff Niesel IN THE EARLY ‘80S, SLAYER AND Anthrax took elements of punk rock and heavy metal to form thrash metal, a new genre. Along with Megadeth and Metallica, the bands became known as the Big Four. Thirty-five years on, Slayer and Anthrax, who kick off a fall tour here at Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica, are still going strong.

Despite the tragic loss of founding guitarist Jeff Hanneman, Slayer has soldiered on with guitarist Gary Holt, who adds some vicious guitar work to the band’s latest album, Repentless.

And despite various lineup changes, Anthrax continues to tour and record. The band recently released a new studio album, For All Kings.

In separate phone interviews, Slayer guitarist Kerry King and Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian provided some perspective on just how the onceunderground bands have managed to persevere.

Both bands first formed 35 years ago. How much did you know about the other guys in the beginning?

King: I didn’t know much about them because they were from the other coast. Obviously, we knew about Metallica because they were originally from Southern California before they moved to the Bay Area, and Megadeth came out of that. But I couldn’t tell you when I first heard of Anthrax. Back then, there wasn’t the internet, so getting information wasn’t as easy. Back then, you had to search and find mom and pop stores with European magazines because the American press wasn’t covering any of this yet. I’m sure Scott [Ian] has better memories of our first encounter because he didn’t drink for the better part of his life like I did.

Ian: I heard the first Slayer record when it first came out. I didn’t meet them until 1985. They were in New York around the time of [the 1985 Slayer album] Hell Awaits. We all happened to be at a Mercyful Fate show. That’s the first time I remember meeting them and having drinks together. For every one beer I had, those guys were having six to seven.

What do you remember about your first-ever show?

King: Back then, it was a big time glam and hair metal scene. We didn’t want to be any part of that. That drove us to be as extreme as we were. We liked extreme music anyway. Having that as fuel for our fire just made us angrier. Our first show was a battle of the bands. We sucked. I was 17 and had been in a band with [Slayer singer-bassist] Tom [Araya] prior to that. We had even played the same battle of the bands a year before that.

It was fun. I’m sure we had a couple of things we nailed and a couple of things we failed.

Ian: Our first-ever show was in a church basement in Flushing, Queens.

We didn’t necessarily rent it out.

Someone knew somebody who ran this actual church, and they let us use this room to play. We did a lot of cover songs of Priest and Maiden. We were playing obscure Priest and Maiden, and they weren’t super popular yet.

We sold tickets for three dollars to anyone we could, mostly our friends who felt guilty probably. We borrowed a PA from somebody. Other than thinking it was rad to be on stage, I don’t know what it sounded like. It was probably terrible, but it was fun. I

remember it being a great experience to stand on a stage even though it was only in front of about 25 people.

What drove you to go against the grain?

King: There was so much rock ’n’ roll party music, but me and Jeff [Hanneman] weren’t into that. Jeff was getting into punk. We just blended Motorhead and Venom with hardcore punk, and that’s basically what Slayer came from.

Ian: We were just playing the music we liked. We were playing music that made us bang our heads.

We were having fun, and that’s what it came down to.

Talk about how difficult it was to scrape together the money to record your very first album.

King: The only one who had a job was Tom. I was just getting out of high school. I didn’t have a job. Jeff didn’t have a job. We got a little bit of money from Metal Blade Records.

We got a little bit of money from my family and from Tom’s family.

Ian: It definitely seemed like an impossible task. In 1981, nobody knew how to climb that hill, but we were going to do our best. I just wanted to do something band-related every day.

I started college in the fall of 1981,

but I would walk around campus with my headphones on listening to Iron Maiden and Run DMC. I wasn’t very focused. I would get out of school at noon and work as a messenger in the city, and I spent most of that time on 48th Street, which is where all the guitar shops were at that time. There was a whole block with music stores.

I was friends with those guys and would check out new equipment and constantly try to push the name of the band.

And what was the tour behind your first album like?

King: We went out in Tom’s Camaro and a U-Haul. It was an adventure. I think we took turns driving the Camaro. For our second or third tour, we graduated to a passenger van. Everyone drove that too. We didn’t get a tour bus until our third record. We’re not like the bands today that have the entitlement of tour buses immediately. We went the old school route and earned it. There’s far more history in tour buses now, so a much younger and less established band can have one because there are some old beat up sons of bitches out there. I’d hate to see the bus we had on the Reign in Blood tour if it still exists. That was 30 years ago. That bus has got to be crying. | clevescene.com | September 7 - 13, 2016

MUSIC Ian: We were in a van in the summer of 1984 opening for Raven.

We played Cleveland and I’m pretty sure we played the old Agora. If I remember correctly, we stayed at Swingos. I’m pretty sure we stayed there. As shitty as it was, it was amazing to be out of New York and New Jersey. Western New Jersey would have been the furthest we had played outside of New York City. To just be out of our zone and out of the tri-state area opening for a band we loved and doing out thing. Our album had come out and people were starting to catch on. People knew the songs and it was unbelievably exciting.

How the hell did thrash metal become so popular in the ’80s?

King: I think people’s tastes adjusted. I’m a fan of metal. I always have been. I just base it on how I progressed. There was no way to find it back then. Growing up in L.A., I didn’t know who Judas Priest was.

After British Steel cam e out, they started getting played on the radio because they had more accessible songs. It’s a natural progression.

When you find the sound you like, that’s where you end up. People didn’t know what thrash metal was. They were just experimenting with it and maybe seeing a show. There were some college stations that were good to us back then too.

I connected with Priest and Maiden, there was an unattainable element, maybe because of the age difference at the time. I was 16 and those guys were in their twenties and were already doing it. People just connected with us and Slayer and Megadeth and Metallica in a way they couldn’t with those bands that came before us because they were larger than life.

Talk about the approach on the new album. Did you set out to do anything differently?

King: Basically, just having something that sounded relevant and songs that sounded different to each other. We used one of Jeff’s leftover songs. I think the lyrics are pretty typical. I always try to keep it really street. If we do demonic songs, of course, that’s just fictional thoughts I made up in my head. The political ones like “Take Control,” I write in such a generic form that anyone can get something out of it. I’m not just bitching about my government.

Everybody wants to take control because the government sucks. Look at our scenario. People are thinking about voting for Donald Trump. What kind of farce is that? The two parties are so polarizing, but they provide ammo for songs until the end of time.

Ian: Nope. We work the same way.

We get in a room and start writing songs that make us want to bang our heads. Nothing’s changed. The lineup changes don’t matter.

Ian: There are so many factors, timing being one of the major ones.

It was the right time for these bands.

The audiences were really connecting.

By 1984 and 1985 and 1986, Priest and Maiden had blown up and become massive arena bands. Even a band like Motorhead was certainly popular.

Along came bands like us. We were our audience. We weren’t on some unreachable level. Priest and Maiden were literally gods. Our attitude was that if those bands already exist, we would just do our thing as well as we could. We didn’t dress like those other bands. The fact that we looked our audience and felt like our audience. We loved the bands that came before us. That’s who we were. It just so happened that we had guitars and wrote songs and were playing to people our age. That connection was what was different. As much as

The band’s gotten some of the best reviews of its career. How has it been able to sustain such a high level of recording and touring?

King: I’m proud that people came out and supported this record the way they did. It was world-wide No. 2, which is unheard of for a band like us, and it’s unheard of for a band with a deceased guitar player and a carousel for drummers. MUSIC STRAIGHT OUTTA THE SOUTHSIDE Bluesman Toronzo Cannon makes a statement with his latest album

By Jeff Niesel ON THE HARD-DRIVING “STRENGTH to Survive,” one of many highlights on singer-guitarist Toronzo Cannon’s latest album, The Chicago Way, Cannon sings about how “real life” is getting in the way of his dreams.

He describes himself as a “broken man” who can’t look at himself in the mirror. It’s heavy, emotional stuff, and the riveting guitar solos possess a real weight too.

“That’s one of the more autobiographical songs on the album,” says Cannon, who has held down a day job as a Chicago city bus driver for 24 years, via phone from his Chicago home. “It’s about the things I do. I’ve been to France, Germany and Denmark, the whole thing. For some of the gigs, I’ll play the weekend and be on the bus the next morning. I will leave that Thursday and come back on Sunday to drive the bus on the bad side of Chicago. I want to tell someone I just came from Switzerland. They don’t care. They’re just trying to get to work. When I do drum up a conversation, they don’t even believe it.”

Cannon isn’t bragging. He’s just telling it like it is. He says his hope is that the everyday person will identify with feeling frustrated with his or her life and wanting to be a better but not quite getting there.

“I write from the angle that I hope someone else is living the same life as me,” he says. “Sometimes, you need the motivation to get to work because you have things you want to do.

That’s what I try to do when I write. I write for my audience. I see guys 50 and over. Chances are, the guys who are 50 and over have gotten a divorce so they know what [the song] ‘Bad Contract’ is all about.”

Born in Chicago, Cannon grew up on the city’s notorious Southside. He says he didn’t initially know it had such a rich blues history.

“At first, I didn’t know the blues club Theresa’s Lounge was right in my neighborhood,” he says. “In my house, it wasn’t blues. It was just

music. Later, you find out there’s genres. I just knew it as daddy’s music. I really dig radio when I go to Europe. They just play everything.”

Because his uncles would patronize Theresa’s Lounge, Cannon used to go there as a child before he was even allowed in.

“I knew that they would hang out there, so I’d wait for them there,” he says. “They had wild stories. One of my uncles almost got shot. He had a girl waiting for him downstairs.

He went across the street to make sure this other woman had her shoes tied. I mean he had to make sure her hot water was boiling — for eggs, of course. When he came back to check on the other girl, she came across the street with a gun. He didn’t get shot, but it was a story you hear at the dinner table or a family reunion.”

A late bloomer, Cannon bought his first guitar at age 22. He was the assistant manager at a movie theatre, so he had a plenty of free time while the movie was playing. He would go upstairs to the office and “try to get some chords together.”

“My sister bought me four lessons, and I got through three of them,” he says. “I couldn’t get through the fourth one. He was teaching me country and Western. I just wasn’t into it. I think I owe my sister some money for that. I feel guilty every

stuff. I learned to keep my eye on the frontman.”

A few years ago, he embarked on a solo career and since a show stopping performance at last year’s Chicago Blues Festival, his career has taken off. With The Chicago Way, his first album for the blues label Alligator, he comments on the violence taking place in the Windy City. The album opener, “The Pain Around Me,” openly addresses the state of things on the city’s Southside.

“Sometimes, people get nervous to write about something political, but there’s no political correctness in the blues,” he says. “Man is always saying a woman is no good.

time I talk about it in interviews. I hope she doesn’t read the interviews”.

Throughout the late ’90s and early 2000s, he found steady work as a sideman.

“My first gig was a high energy guy named Tommy McCracken,” he says. “He would stop a song in the middle. As a guy who just started to play guitar, I was seeing the audience from that vantage point and was really exited. Then, he would give out signals and do all this James Brown

without going for the obvious lines about the needle hanging out of some guy’s arm. I think it worked.

I can be wordy sometimes in my songs. [Producer Bruce Iglauer] wanted me to say it in the least amount of words. That was my challenge. I think I delivered.”

For the searing “Jealous Love,” he teams up with big voiced Melon “Honeydew” Lewis,” who matches his boasts with her powerhouse vocals.

“I knew her from the Southside,”

he explains. “She would come down after hours late at night, and we would let people sit in and jam. She had this big voice. I wanted to break the monotony of my voice. Bruce said it should be my CD, but I didn’t know anyone who [added a duet], and I wanted something different. I don’t want to be the same Chicago blues man. I need to push the envelope a bit. I just wanted a female voice. If we could have afforded a choir, I would have got a choir from the Southside.

Maybe on the next album.”

Horns bring a real vibrancy to the punchy “Midlife Crisis.”

“I want to break the monotony of hearing organ, guitar, drums and bass guitar,” Cannon says. “I want to turn people around. I like real horns where you hear the guys breathing, and you can even hear the spit.”

Cannon says he writes songs quickly, so he’s ready to start on his next album.

“When I played basketball, I used to trash talk a lot,” he jokes.

‘When you trash talk, it has to be immediate. You have to trash talk now in the moment. You can’t be thinking that you’re going to get him later. So things come to me quickly. I have stuff in mind. We have a few songs we even cut that didn’t make the album.”

LIVEWIRE acclaim in the U.S. and Canada, the Sheepdogs drifted into their latest album -- last year’s Future Nostalgia -- with confidence and finely honed songwriting chops. You’ve got examples of upbeat riff heaven, like “I Really Wanna Be Your Man” and “Back Down,” slathered across the album. It’s fun as hell, and this is how rock ‘n’ roll should sound: full-bodied and red-blooded. Pat Carney of the Black Keys produced the Sheepdogs’ prior album, and that’ll give you a pretty good sense of where this band is coming from.

Jahman Braham/Treespeak: Known regionally for upbeat shows and great jamming, this Columbus-based outfit has been catching a nice buzz over the past few years of shows.

The band’s 2010 debut, NewFields, is a cohesive collection of summery funk. Songs like “A Screw Loose (Or So…)” contrast melodically tight verses with wider moments of “shred ’n’ flow,” as the band members have described it. Album opener “Life (Give and Take)” really sets the table nicely, falling back on a simple chord progression accented with delightful keys work and singer Justin Brown’s enthusiastic lyrics. (Tune your ears into the playful tempo games in that one.) The band has dropped a number of live sets online, so check them out and then check in with them later tonight. (Sandy), 8 p.m., Free. The Revivalists/Temperance Movement: Blending the New Orleans musical ethos and legacy with a contemporary jam band outlook and style, the Revivalists have been consistently thrilling for years. We’ve reviewed a number of Revivalists shows over the years here in Cleveland, and the band always brings its funky heat and high energy. Take a spin through their catalog; everything from the recent Men Amongst Mountains

to earlier stuff like Vital Signs is fresh as hell and varied enough to keep listeners involved for the whole ride. ABOVE THIS FIRE HARDCORE HEROES: When Morgan joined in 2009, Above This Fire had already been going strong since the other members had formed the group while still in high school. The band played its ďŹ rst-ever show with the post-punk act Thursday at the old Blind Lemon (now the Foundry).

From that point on, the band became a major player on the local punk and hardcore scene. Morgan, a drummer with the terriďŹ c local hard rock act Disengage, joined the group when Disengage started to wind down. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We played some shows with them in the past when I was in Disengage, and I got to be good friends with them and loved the energy of the live shows,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was important to play with people who got it and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have wild expectations of making it big and becoming the next big thing. We just want to have fun.â&#x20AC;?

WICH ONES: About six years ago, Magnotto wrote to let us know that the bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s favorite greasy spoon, Georgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kitchen in Westpark named a sandwich after the band.

Apparently, the restaurantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s owner saw a press photo of the group that was taken in front of his diner and was so thrilled that the guys frequented his place, he decided to give them their own dish, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Above This Fire Buffalo Chicken Sammy.â&#x20AC;?

Last year, Fat Headâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Brewery named a sandwich after the band. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any new sandwiches in the works, but we can use this article as an open call,â&#x20AC;? says Morgan.

No one wants sex work going on around minors, of courseâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;on or around minorsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;so thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not what makes the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Actâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; an Orwellian piece of bullshit.

Laws regulating sex work in Canada were rewritten after Terri-Jean Bedford, a retired dominatrix and madam, took her case to the courts. The Supreme Court of Canada ultimately ruledâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;unanimouslyâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; that criminalizing sex work made it more dangerous, not less, and consequently the laws on the books against sex work violated the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. But instead of decriminalizing sex work, Parliament made it legal to sell sex in Canada but illegal to buy it, aka the â&#x20AC;&#x153;end demandâ&#x20AC;? approach to stamping out sex work.
