UPFRONT OPPORTUNITY ZONES WILL ONLY ENRICH INVESTORS IF THERE’S NOT A CONCERTED PUSH FOR EQUITY

INVESTORS NATIONWIDE ARE rubbing their hands together as they wait for the full set of rules from the U.S. Treasury regarding Opportunity Zones, the new federal tax incentive that targets highpoverty census tracts for economic development. Investors will be able to postpone or forego capital gains taxes if they invest those gains in the zones via “Opportunity Funds” created for such investments.

In Cleveland, a cohort of leaders are trying to ensure that the majority of these dollars don’t flow into already prosperous areas. Parts of Tremont, Ohio City, downtown and University Circle are among the local designated Opportunity Zones.

They were selected based on input from the city of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County and a handful of local economic development organizations, including the Greater Cleveland Partnership and the Fund for Our Economic Future.

The think tank Policy Matters Ohio, in a report published this week, said that the tax incentive might enhance poor communities, but unless the program is implemented carefully, it could also increase inequality.

The program is intended to direct the investment of capital gains, 64 percent of which, in Ohio, belong to the richest 1 percent of tax fi lers (average annual income of $1.2 million or higher). They’ll benefit greatly from the tax cut.

But as Policy Matters reiterates, tax cuts drain scarce resources from the public sector, which, unlike the wealthy investor class, isn’t focused on maximizing its profits to the exclusion of all other considerations.

“The effect on low-income residents of Opportunity Zones is less clear,” Policy Matters wrote in its report. “Tax incentives have not been very effective in creating jobs. Investment capital does not address the pressing needs of people living in or near poverty.

Pricey new residential development could force rents up and drive some low-income residents out of

their neighborhoods. Cuts to food aid and health care that federal legislators are considering to pay for last year’s tax overhaul (including the Opportunity Zone program) would hurt low-income families. Reporting requirements, transparency, local oversight and enforceable community benefit agreements should be an essential part of the program to ensure residents are helped and not harmed.” (Italics added.)

One likely outcome is that, without intervention and safeguards, investors will merely flock toward the highest possible returns and pour money into projects like nuCLEus, the Quicken Loans Arena and the Flats East Bank, all of which already have received (or could potentially receive) significant public subsidies.

Earlier this month, in a summit about the Zones, roughly 100 public, private and nonprofit leaders gathered to discuss strategies for ensuring sustainable, equitable development. Writing about that summit for the Brookings Institute, Rachel Barker and Alan Berube noted that investors do tend to seek out projects with higher projected returns. This is a no-brainer.

“In Cleveland, for example, the

typical home value in Opportunity Zone communities ranges from just $52,000 [around] the Opportunity Corridor, to $137,000 in Ohio City/ Tremont/West 25th Corridor. As one expert noted, this dynamic could lead to just 10 to 15 percent of the “hottest” Opportunity Zones capturing the lion’s share of investment. Preventing this outcome, and ensuring that Opportunity Zones deliver a social benefit commensurate with the revenues that the U.S. Treasury foregoes, won’t happen by chance.”

So there needs to be a concerted effort around “truly equitable investment,” said Brad Whitehead, president of the Fund for Our Economic Future, when Scene asked about the summit and its key takeaways.

Though all the rules aren’t out yet, Whitehead said there are a number of strategies that economic development organizations can pursue, including identifying investors across the country “who are applying a social lens” to their investments, “utilizing measurement mechanisms to score investments on their social impact,” and leveraging philanthropic dollars to “structure deals that make sense both financially and

socially.”

Cleveland on the Brink of Surpassing 100 Homicides for Fifth Straight Year Last Wednesday night marked the most recent deadly shooting in Cleveland after gunfire erupted in the parking lot outside the Zelma George Recreation Center during a youth-league football game.

A 15-year-old boy was shot in both legs, and a 21-year-old-man was killed. The man was the eighth homicide between Sunday and Wednesday, including a 94-yearold-woman who was beaten to death during a Slavic Village neighborhood home invasion.

From these eight homicides, only a few arrests have been made, including Dettrick Walker, 18, who was arrested Thursday on charges related to the Sunday murder of Victor Maar II, 35, in the West Park neighborhood.

Forbes lists Cleveland as the ninth most dangerous city in America; we rank ninth in teen gun violence; and the Major Cities Chiefs Association listed us as having the fifth highest murder rate per capita in 2017, with four out of every five homicides related to gun violence.

Cleveland’s parking tax rate. The tax was established in 1996 not to fund transit, but to pay for the construction and upkeep of the Cleveland Browns Stadium.

the 133 homicides that marked 2016 as one of the deadliest years in the city in decades. So far, Cleveland has 98 homicides for 2018. At this rate, we’ll reach 134 homicides by the end of the year.

The city is currently two homicides away from its fifth consecutive year of 100 homicides or more. This is the first time this has happened since the war on drugs in the 1990s.

At a press conference last week, the Cleveland Police addressed the rash of violence and said that the police were working diligently to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Deputy chief Harold Pretel opened the conference noting that the crimes have been committed on both Cleveland’s east and west sides, and that there have been enhanced efforts in response to the violence. “We’re turning over every stone, we’re doing everything we can, but we need the public’s assistance,” he said.

While there haven’t been arrests made in many of these homicides, the police have identified persons of interest and are continuing their investigations, according to Lt. Ali Pillow.

The FBI and Crime Stoppers are offering $7,500 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in any of these cases.

There are two FBI special agents and investigative analysts assigned to Cleveland’s homicide unit.

Cleveland Police continued to stress the importance of public assistance and support in bringing these cases to justice.

“We need any information, no matter how small it might be,” Pillow said. “It might be the piece we need to close this case. If you saw something, if you think you know something, call us.”

Cavs Beat Reporter Joe Vardon Departing Cleveland.com for The Athletic Cleveland.com, which earlier this year lost some folks through voluntary buyouts and which has, in recent months, lost its meteorologist and a key member of the Columbus bureau staff, lost a big name on a big beat Monday.

Joe Vardon announced that after four years with the outlet, he’s departing to join The Athletic Cleveland to cover the Cavs and the

NBA. It’s an interesting time, to say the least, for Cleveland.com. Guild negotiations between the Plain Dealer union and parent company Advance Publications haven’t really begun yet, but with the contract set to expire in February of 2019, it’s only a matter of time. (It’s worth remembering here that Advance created the “digital first” Cleveland. com side basically and essentially to gut and kill the union.)

Anyway, there are rumblings that Cleveland.com can’t hire replacements until that all gets sorted out in February, and chances are they’ll probably semipromote from within and perhaps cut back on sending reporters on road trips this season, which, with a LeBron-less Cavs likely scraping the middle of the Eastern Conference at best, might make the decision easier than it would have been otherwise. — Vince Grzegorek

YOU’RE LIVING IN A TOWN THAT’S DRUNK ON THEATER So drink up, with dozens of theater companies and scores of productions

I’VE BEEN A THEATER CRITIC for about 20 years, so people will sometimes ask me how many plays I see. I tell them it averages out to two or three a week, and they always seem surprised. Especially since I don’t typically review shows at our vast array of accomplished and industrious community theaters, such as Chagrin Valley Little Theater, Clague Playhouse, Cassidy Theatre and TrueNorth Cultural Arts.

But that shouldn’t be so surprising, since there are dozens of theater companies or theater-involved organizations presenting familiar scripts as well as brand-new ones to the area. So let’s look at a small sampling of the shows on deck for this fall. And later, I’ll give you a Google-ready list of other theaters you should check out for yourself.

If familiar scripts are your thing, the Beck Center is staging Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, written more than 55 years ago but still a powerful piece. It’s a knock-down, drag-out battle between a husband and wife (and their multiple demons) that opens Oct. 5.

Of course, you like your plays even older than that, so how about a classic romantic comedy, Pride and Prejudice at the Great Lakes Theater? Ms. Bennett and Mr. Darcy are at it again in this adaptation of the Jane Austen novel that’s so love-struck you may find yourself looking for a fainting couch. It opens Oct. 5. And there’s also East of Eden, the American epic based on the John Steinbeck novel, on the boards at Ensemble Theatre beginning Oct. 19. Sorry, James Dean is not involved.

Familiar theater also comes in musical form, as Hello, Dolly! will prove when it visits Playhouse Square starting on Sept. 30. This revival features awesome Betty Buckley as the irrepressible matchmaker at the turn of the 20th century. And in another musical vein, the 15–year-old wit and wisdom (i.e., “Everybody’s a little bit racist”) of Avenue Q hits the stage at Blank Canvas Theatre on Dec. 7.

of the hysterical troupe working at Conni’s Avant-Garde Restaurant. It’s a play performed during a five-course meal served to the audience by the performers — with kitchen utensils used in remarkably naughty ways.

The crazy opens on Dec. 4.

Fortunately for those who relish new stuff, several theaters specialize in producing new material. While Dobama Theatre’s current tagline is “Cleveland’s Off-Broadway Theatre,” that was more true three or four decades ago than it is now. To wit, at None Too Fragile Theater, a play titled Freakstorm, by Matt Pelfrey, probes a moral dilemma with a touch of macabre comedy. It opens on Sept. 28.

And more off-Broadway style material is on the boards at Convergence-Continuum Theater, where wedded bliss is a target in This Much (Or an Act of Violence Toward the Institution of Marriage). ’Nuff said; it opens Oct. 12. And yes, Dobama is also in the game with the play John by Annie Baker, which will take us into a mystical puzzle composed of toys, figurines, and a very odd American Girl doll. The mystery begins on Oct. 19.

Forum, will give us a taste of something different in Plath and Orion, two one-act plays — one by Lanford Wilson and one by company founder and artistic director Greg Cesear. Each features dialogue between the two women. It is running now until Oct. 27. And beginning on Oct. 25, all the black people from one town suddenly disappear in Day of Absence at Karamu House.

Wrapping up the plays you haven’t see before is Sweat, at the Cleveland Play House, a Pulitzer Prize-winning drama about union lockouts and worker layoffs in a small Pennsylvania town. That opens Oct. 13.

As you know, all these theaters are producing other plays during this season, so it would behoove you to visit their websites for further details on that impressive galaxy of upcoming plays.

Still, this only scratches the surface of the activity in this theaterdrunk town. So your assignment is to check out the productions at these other venues. Here they are, with a small sampling of their wares: Near West Theatre: An intergenerational production of Newsies running now until Sept. 30.

Ohio Shakespeare Festival: A

family theater experience, Treasure Island: An Adventure with Music, opens Sept. 28.

Talespinner Children’s Theatre: The Boy Who Stole the Sun, adapted and directed by theater founder Alison Garrigan.

Weathervane Playhouse: The Hunchback of Notre Dame, opening Oct. 11.

New World Performance Lab: An energetic, engrossing and bilingual telling of Don Quijote (That’s Spanish for Quixote), running now through Sept. 29.

Also, keep an eye out for productions by Playwrights Local, Lakeland Civic Theatre, Maelstrom Collaborative Arts, Powerful Long Ladder Ensemble and the Ohio City Theater Project.

And that’s not even mentioning the theaters that only perform in the summer: Mercury Theater Company, Cleveland Shakespeare Festival, Cain Park, Porthouse Theatre and the Oberlin Summer Theater Festival.

That’s enough to float you away on a permanent theater-induced high.

Ah, and what a glorious glow it will leave!

The new Cleveland Ballet heads into its fourth season with a Playhouse Square residency

THERE’S A NEW CLEVELAND Ballet in town, the moniker’s third iteration. Most Clevelanders probably only remember the Cleveland Ballet that jetted off to San Jose full time in 2000 after its finances crumbled.

The departure left the city without a homegrown professional classical ballet company, a fact that didn’t seem to bother some folks in town. After all, prestigious, worldrenowned companies still come to Playhouse Square semi-annually, and there are plenty of other local dance troupes performing around town.

Artistic director Gladisa Guadalupe, who co-founded the new company in 2015, wants people to wake up.

“Every major city needs a professional classical ballet company,” says Guadalupe from her Bedford Heights studio last week, pointing out that Cincinnati, Columbus and even Dayton have professional companies.

Cleveland Ballet executive director Michael Krasnyansky, who shares an office with Guadalupe, explains the situation like this: “Would you

want to get rid of the Cavs with the promise that every few months there would be an exhibition game here?

Would you want to see the Pistons or the Knicks play in Cleveland? Or do you want your own professional team? Of course you do.”

Guadalupe, a Puerto Rico native and principal dancer and teacher with the previous Cleveland Ballet, and Krasnyansky, a businessman who immigrated from Russia 30 years ago, started the non-profit Cleveland Ballet with their own capital. They say that no one was willing to help finance the new company through grants or an endowment. Many local arts donors had been burned when the previous troupe left town.

“We had to prove ourselves from the beginning,” Guadalupe says.

“We’re still proving ourselves.”

But somehow, in a time when many national ballet companies are folding and audiences are graying, the new Cleveland Ballet is working.

Through each season, the company has expanded its roster of paid dancers, blooming to 14 this year. Its board and donor lists have grown.

And last season’s performances of Alice and The Nutcracker were completely sold out, culminating in an invitation to become the resident ballet company at Playhouse Square earlier this year. That means more marketing, and first dibs on scheduling higher-profile marketing, greater access to rehearsal space and priority in scheduling.

“Unfortunately, some people in Cleveland still don’t know we exist,” Guadalupe says. “We don’t have a $6or $8-million budget, we’re a belowmillion-dollar budget company. To be honest, it’s a miracle. I don’t know how we did this. How did we do it?”

But as their fourth season kicks off next month with a performance called Fall Collection, most of which Guadalupe choreographed, it’s apparent that this new company has learned from the past.

First, the School of Cleveland Ballet, which Guadalupe has run since 2000, is a separate nonprofit organization from Cleveland Ballet, making each company more stable.

Second, while other companies spend profusely on sets, Cleveland’s ballets are sparse, and the costumes, while

still intricate and beautiful, aren’t all sewn by an in-house designer, which saves money. As they work toward their goal of a $3-million budget, a number still far below that of other Ohio ballet companies, the quality of the dancing is the highest priority.

“Even if I had the budget of other cities, I’d put that money into doing more performances and hiring more dancers,” Guadalupe says.

Down the hall in a mirrorlined room, the company’s willowy dancers are running the upcoming performance’s first 20-minute number, set to Felix Mendelssohn’s “Piano Concerto No. 1.” Not all the moves are effortless yet, it’s still just practice. But seeing it all up close with the sweat dripping and the pounding of the pointe shoes shows athleticism at its finest.

As Guadalupe knows, these dancers are the magic. They are the thing that brings people through the door. With dancers from all over the world now in the company, ranging in ages from 15 to 29, Guadalupe is ceaselessly excited to work with her artists and finesse their craft. Most of all she wants to create a company culture that feels like a family.

“We have great dancers who care about this,” Guadalupe says. “It is a startup company yes, but we have a great product already.”

Guadalupe and Krasnyansky know their dreams are massive, but there’s nothing they’d rather be doing. The goal is to get Cleveland back on the map in the dance world.

“You know what I said when they took the LeBron banner down downtown?” Krasnyansky recalls of telling a Cleveland Ballet board member. “I said, ‘Why not put Cleveland Ballet up there? We’re not leaving, he came and left. We’re not leaving.’”

Cleveland Museum of Art’s annual performing arts series features world premieres

FOR ITS ANNUAL PERFORMING Arts Series, the Cleveland Museum of Art regularly brings artists from around the world into town to perform at the museum. This year, the program gets even more adventurous as it will incorporate a major commissioning program featuring six internationally acclaimed composers into the mix.

In the series, co-sponsored by the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion program, the composers will appear in Cleveland over the next two years. They’ll take inspiration from a piece or exhibit at the museum that piques their interest, return to their respective homes and compose a piece based on whatever inspired them.

“For the first time ever, the Cleveland Museum of Art is launching a committed, top-level commissioning program,” says Thomas M. Welsh, the museum’s director of performing arts. “In 100 years of concerts and a wonderful, rich tradition of music at the museum, there’s always been one missing component. The museum has not commissioned new works by living composers in a globally ambitious way. That changes this year as we jump in with both feet.

We identified six composers to invite to the Cleveland Museum of Art to find something here that inspires them after they immerse themselves in our collection and our works.

Out of that will spring six new compositions. It’s a grand adventure.

Each work will undoubtedly be different because each artist has a unique voice.”

It all starts with CMA’s popular series of chamber music in the galleries featuring young artists from the Cleveland Institute of Music and from Case Western Reserve University’s early and baroque music programs. They’re slated to perform in the museum’s galleries on the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m.

(Oct. 3, Nov. 7, Dec. 5, Feb. 6, March 6, April 3 and May 1). “It’s a pleasure to feature the rising stars of the classical field in the intimate settings of our galleries,” says Welsh.

early-music vocal ensemble Vox Luminis, which performs at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, gives over 60 concerts a year. The group has played in Belgium and across Europe, releasing 12 albums during the course of its career. The CMA show will feature special guests Anthony Romaniuk (organ) and Ricardo Rodriguez Miranda (viola da gamba). “This is one of the finest choral music groups bringing a program of Bach,” says Welsh.

“They’re absolutely wonderful. In the last several years, we’ve had some of the greatest choral groups come through, and we’re excited to add Vox Luminis to this list with their first performance at the museum.”

Regulars at the museum, the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble returns to perform at 2 p.m. on Nov. 11. Timothy Weiss conducts the group that features guest pianists Sarah Gibson and Thomas Kotcheff and includes works by composers-in-residence at Oberlin.

“This is one of our ongoing series,” says Welsh. “I believe that Tim Weiss and the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble are among the finest new music ensembles of our time. This group plays as well as any of them, and Tim is a major force. Presenting

them over the course of the season greatly expands the repertoire offered to Cleveland audiences.”

Another ongoing series comes from a relationship that the museum has with Saint Louis Cathedral in New Orleans. The cathedral regularly hosts organists from Europe and then sends them to Cleveland to participate in the Performing Arts Series. At 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, Paul Goussot from the medieval Abbey of StCroix in Bordeaux, France, will perform. He recently won first prize for improvisation at the 26th International Organ Festival in Saint Albans. “This is a nice partnership for us because the New Orleans cathedral has a channel to the great organ conservatories of Europe and with them we get a first look at some young stars of the organ world,” says Welsh. “They’re typically playing not only their first Cleveland concerts but their first U.S. concerts.”

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2016, composer Henry Threadgill has been called “perhaps the most important jazz composer of his generation.” He and his ensemble Zooid will team up with the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble for a world-premiere performance of

an “expanded and improvising” chamber ensemble. Part of the Creative Fusion-sponsored commissioning series, the concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11. “The plan with Henry is that given this wide opportunity, he wanted to have his band Zooid, an extraordinary five-piece ensemble based in New York, be expanded or attached to a chamber music ensemble and have this flexible chamber music group that’s neither classical nor jazz but living in a new form. Tim Weiss and the Oberlin Contemporary Music Ensemble are the perfect collaborative partners.

By commissioning artists, it’s like a high wire act with no net. I know about his work, and I have an understanding of the music he has made in the past, but we don’t know what this piece will sound like because we’ll hear it for the first time in January.”

At 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, conservatory musicians from the Cleveland Institute of Music’s Organ Studio will present an afternoon recital of works for solo organ on the museum’s McMyler Memorial Organ.

“In conjunction with the two young artists coming from France, we have a regular and ongoing commitment

FEATURE to presenting organ recitals including young artists from the studio of Todd Wilson at CIM,â&#x20AC;? says Welsh.

Another composer in the commissioned series, Japanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Aya Nishina will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 8. She will debut â&#x20AC;&#x153;Symphonia,â&#x20AC;? a multi-movement work inspired by the â&#x20AC;&#x153;opened-mouth creaturesâ&#x20AC;? she found throughout the museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collection. The work is for choreographed voices and mixed large ensemble. â&#x20AC;&#x153;For many years, she has split her time between Tokyo and New York,â&#x20AC;? says Welsh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s currently back in Tokyo and has visited us and has fallen in love with the museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collection, particularly in the Korean and Japanese collections.â&#x20AC;?

Turkeyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cenk ErgĂźn, an improviser whose work has been performed by So Percussion, JACK Quartet, Alarm Will Sound and Yarn/ Wire, concludes the series with a performance that takes place in the museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s atrium in May (the exact date hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been announced yet). â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cenk is also part of the composer series,â&#x20AC;? says Welsh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He is Turkish but has lived in New York for many years.

Welsh says the museum also hopes to host pre- or post-concert talks with the Creative Fusion composers. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I intend to organize some events in October and November when the next three composers will come through,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The next three composers will have their premieres in the 2020 season, so the whole thing happens over a two-year arc. One of the crucial things to do is to give people access to young living composers. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a rare thing, and it also humanizes the entire experience.â&#x20AC;?

A SILVER SCREEN TRIP AROUND THE WORLD The Chagrin Documentary Film Festival has a bounty of cinematic excitement in store

LET’S SAY YOU DECIDED THAT you wanted to spend some time rubbing shoulders with filmmakers.

(And we’re not talking here about filmmakers such as the recently outed and thoroughly disgusting Harvey Weinstein.) We’re talking about people who have a passion to create films that tell unique stories about important social issues, emotional aspects of the human spirit, and sometimes even frivolous topics.

Well, lucky you! Because dozens of filmmakers will soon be descending on Chagrin Falls when the Chagrin Documentary Film Festival launches its yummy onslaught of films Oct. 3 to 7.

This is the ninth annual Chagrin Fest, and it is now well-established as one of the leading film festivals in the world. Indeed, MovieMaker Magazine has named it one of the “Top 50 Film Fests Worth the Entry Fee” for six years running! By most counts, there are about 3,000 active film festivals in the world, so when you’re in the top 50, repeatedly, you’re in elite company.

Since this is a documentary film festival, it touches a lot of bases, subject-wise. Farming in Sudan?

Check. Sammy Davis Jr.? Got it.

Refugee tragedies? Yep. Bathtubs Over Broadway, which explores the corporate video musicals made for employees in the 1950s? Oh, yeah.

Declining eagle habitats? Certainly.

Men and women who live with and love their silicone doll pals? Why, of course.

Speaking of that last one, Melody Gilbert is the filmmaker who created the 70-minute film called Silicone Soul. And she is stoked about coming to Northeast Ohio for the CDFF. “I’m very excited to come to Chagrin Falls for this festival. I particularly enjoy the conversations I have with people after the screening of the film, and it seems the Chagrin Fest is set up to encourage that kind of connection between audiences and filmmakers.”

And so it is. The founder and director of CDFF, Mary Ann Quinn Ponce, established the festival in honor of her son David Ponce, a

documentary filmmaker (The Lost Sparrows of Roodepoort) who lost his life to leukemia at the age of 20. As she says, “The Festival is all about the filmmakers. We treat them like gold, providing an opportunity for them to meet their audiences whenever possible, and the chance to network with other filmmakers from around the world.”

This year, there will be 89 films from 31 countries that encompass a variety of lengths: one-minute docs, short films, and feature-length movies. This treasure trove includes world premieres, Midwest premieres and Ohio premieres. And Ponce expects about 75 directors, producers and film subjects to be in attendance during the five-day festival, which has projectors running from morning to night at seven venues in and around Chagrin Falls.

Since this charming town is small, it will be hard not to bump into filmmakers when you go out for a bite to eat or stop for a refreshing beverage or ice cream cone. There are also special events and parties scheduled, including 10 panel discussions and film events.

As Ponce notes, the Chagrin Fest is not your usual film festival.

“We are different because we are

situated in beautiful Chagrin Falls at a gorgeous time of the year.

We’re not stuck in a single building, nor are we spread out over a wide expanse in a large city. Since we are embedded in this lovely town, it allows everyone to enjoy the films and conversations in a relaxed and friendly environment.”

Of course, it’s impossible to see everything, so how do you choose which films to see? Festival director Ponce has a suggestion. “Why not pick a film on a subject you’re not interested in or haven’t looked into in any depth? I think people will be surprised how involving these films can be, particularly when the movie in question is providing a glimpse into a part of the world or a slice of humanity that is unfamiliar.”

It’s probably fair to say that, for most of us, Gilbert’s film Silicone Soul fits into that category. As she explains, “We have a variety of different people in the film who have chosen life-size silicone (not blowup) dolls as their partners or companions. These are expensive dolls costing around $10,000 each, so there is a substantial commitment involved. The subjects in the film range from a man who is ‘married’ to a doll to a woman, a well-respected

photographer, who has 12 female doll girlfriends.”

As a chronicler of various subcultures, Gilbert sees the humanity in these subjects. “We all have a need for companionship and love. Who are we to judge people who find what they need in these dolls?”

OKAY, YOU’RE A PLAYWRIGHT (or wannabe playwright, or just an interested person) in Cleveland. You want information about that craft, you want to meet people who write plays. And yet, you have no money.

Well, you’re just the person they’re looking for at the fourth annual Cleveland Playwrights Festival, sponsored by Playwrights Local.

This one-day fest is all about being a playwright — in the world and in Cleveland — and it’s free.

David Todd, artistic director of Playwrights Local, says this event is all about the playwrights. “We want to promote and draw attention to the budding and established playwrights

on “Writing Plays That Get Produced;” and a performance of the tabletop play The Events of the Warren County Fair as Observed by a Young Astronaut, by Amy Schwabauer and Mikc Geither, followed by a talk-back session.

As a special event, there also will be a screening and talk-back of the new, locally created web-series Upstairs, with production contributor Robert Hunter and others. All these events are free and open to the general public.

The fall classical music schedule is jam packed with something for everyone

WITH A LENGTHY SCHEDULE of concerts and recitals in Northeast Ohio, choosing a few events to recommend is like throwing darts at the list. Here are some especially interesting performances.

ORCHESTRAS The first big production of the Cleveland Orchestra season will be Mahler’s “Resurrection Symphony” led

by Franz Welser-Möst, with soprano Joélle Harvey and mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke on Oct. 4, 5 and 6.

German violinist Christian Tetzlaff will be featured in Alban Berg’s concerto, along with music

by Webern and Schoenberg, on Oct. 25 and 27.

Composer John Adams will lead the orchestra on Nov. 29 and 30 and Dec. 1 in two of his own works, including “Scherazade.2” with violinist Leila Josefowicz.

As part of the Severance Hall holiday festival, Jane Glover will lead four performances of Handel’s “Messiah” from Dec. 6 to 9.

Jeannette Sorrell’s period instrument ensemble Apollo’s Fire begins its season with three performances of Magnificent Mozart from Oct. 12 to 14, then launches a new series, Baroque Bistro. AF continues its exploration of Middle Eastern music with “O Jerusalem!” and celebrates the holidays with Handel’s “Messiah” and a revival of “Christmas on Sugarloaf Mountain.”

Akron’s Tuesday Musical will present Montreal’s Les Violons du Roy with countertenor Anthony Ross Costanzo in an Oct. 16 E.J. Thomas Hall program of music by Glass and Handel.

Vinay Parameswaran will lead the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra in its first concert on Nov. 16 in Severance Hall, when violinist Célina Béthoux will be featured in Samuel Barber’s “Concerto.”

The next evening, Nov. 17, the Contemporary Youth Orchestra will play music by Michael Daugherty, Christopher Rouse and Michael McIntosh under Liza Grossman in Waetjen Auditorium at Cleveland

State University.

And on Dec. 12, in Finney Chapel, Atlanta Symphony conductor and Oberlin alum Robert Spano will lead Oberlin Orchestra in the premiere of Stephen Hartke’s “Cello Concerto” with Darrett Adkins.

OPERA Two conservatories are offering unusual titles in November. Oberlin Opera Theater’s production of Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti (along with music from Candide and West Side Story), and CIM opera’s staging of Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol and Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges will run simultaneously between Nov. 7 and 11.

CHORAL MUSIC Oberlin College Choir offers the rare opportunity on Oct. 18 to hear Igor Stravinsky’s “Le Noces (The Wedding)” for chorus, soloists, four grand pianos and percussion.

The Finney Chapel performance includes Sofia Gubaidulina’s “Canticle of the Sun.” Composer Margaret Brouwer has revised her “Voice of the Lake,” an oratorio about Lake Erie’s slide toward crisis, for a performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music on Oct. 19. Domenico Boyagian conducts, and soloists include soprano Angela Mortellaro, tenor Brian Skoog and bass Bryant Bush.

Jay White takes the reins of

Quire Cleveland this season. Its first concert at St. John’s Cathedral on Nov. 2 includes Requiem Mass movements and elegies. In December, the French Baroque ensemble Les Délices will join Quire under guest conductor Eric Milnes for three performances of Charpentier’s charming “Midnight Mass.”

The Cleveland Museum of Art will kick off its performing arts series in Gartner Auditorium on Oct. 24 with a concert of Bach Motets by the Belgian choir Vox Luminus, Lionel Meunier conducting.

Among a number of community chorus concerts, Good Company’s Nov. 4 performance of music by Ola Gjeilo at Lakewood Presbyterian Church stands out. The composer will be present.

CHAMBER MUSIC AND SOLO RECITALS Les Délices continues its chronicle of Mozart’s visit to Paris with three concerts on Oct. 4, 6, and 7 in Akron, Lakewood and Shaker Heights featuring fortepianist Sylvia Berry.

The Cavani Quartet will appear in two concerts with poet Mwatabu Okantah: the Arts Renaissance Tremont series at Pilgrim Church on Oct. 14, and the John Knox Performance Series in North Olmsted on Nov. 2.

Baldwin Wallace saxophone professor Steven Banks will be featured in an Oct. 14 Music from the Western Reserve recital at Christ Church in Hudson.

Burning River Baroque (soprano/ cellist Malina Rauschenfels and harpsichordist Paula Maust) will bring 18th century music into the #metoo era with performances of “Destructive Desires” on Oct. 19 in a private home, and on Oct. 20 and 21 in Cleveland Heights and Lakewood.

On Oct. 26, Keith Fitch’s CIM New Music Ensemble will mark the centennial of Igor Stravinsky’s “A Soldier’s Tale (L’Histoire du Soldat)” with the premiere of a new video by Kasumi, along with other Stravinsky and Kasumi pieces and Esa-Pekka Salonen’s “Catch and Release.”

The Baltimore Consort will visit Akron’s Arts at Holy Trinity Lutheran series on Oct. 28 with a program of early and traditional Scottish music.

On Nov. 3, at First Unitarian Church in Shaker Heights, the celebrated Los Angeles Guitar Quartet will be a highlight of the fall Cleveland Classical Guitar Society’s season.

Heights Arts will begin its four-performance Close Encounters season with “We Too,” works by women spanning a millennium.

Cleveland Orchestra members will play music from Hildegard von Bingen to Joan Tower on Nov. 11 in a private residence in Herrick Mews.

Canadian violin virtuoso James Ehnes will bring his quartet to the Cleveland Chamber Music Society at Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights for Haydn, Elgar, and Bartók on Nov. 13.

And finally, fans of former Cleveland Orchestra assistant conductor James Feddeck will want to catch his Gala Serenade Evening on the Rocky River Chamber Music Society series at West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church on Nov. 19. He’ll conduct Cleveland Orchestra members and friends in serenades by Dvorák and Brahms.

WHEN IT COMES TO THE places that host significant international performing arts festivals, which cities spring to mind? Avignon, France! Edinburgh, Scotland! Cleveland, Ohio? (Add record needle scratch here.)

But wait, that’s not such a crazy idea, because plans are afoot to launch the BorderLight Festival of International Theatre next summer, right here in downtown Cleveland.

Co-directors Dale Heinen and Jeff Pence are leading the way on this project, and they’ve summoned local talents and resources to make this festival a reality.

Heinen and Pence plan to follow a European model for the festival, with most of the activity happening between Public Square and Playhouse Square along the Euclid Avenue Corridor. In addition to using established theaters, many additional spaces will be utilized, including storefronts and the street.

As Heinen notes, “Cleveland has an amazing theatrical infrastructure. Playhouse Square is the second-largest performing arts center in the country. And our city boasts other neighborhoods, such as Gordon Square, where communities have been reinvigorated by theater.

Along with our renowned Cleveland Orchestra and Cleveland Museum of Art, this city has become a leading cultural center. And BorderLight will only enhance that image.”

Of course, it will take a lot of activity to fill the space between Tower City Center and the Connor

Palace Theatre. So Heinen, Pence and BorderLight board members have developed a multilevel plan. There will be a core festival featuring performing arts companies that they will import from around the world. Then there will be shared events in which local Cleveland performing artists and groups will collaborate with similar and complementary groups from across the U.S. and internationally.

And third, there will be a “fringe festival” with unique theatrical offerings.

And, as they say, you’ll get all that plus much more: Puppetry, circus acts, clowning, choirs, youth performances — you name it. “This is an exciting concept,” says Heinen, “and because we’re establishing an advisory council with national credentials, we believe BorderLight can be a cultural fixture that will draw people from around the world.”

So if you’ve been practicing juggling toasters in the basement and you’re ready to go public, or if you are active in any of the myriad performing arts, keep an eye out for the BorderLight announcement inviting Requests for Proposals.

That notice will be sent out in October. The Festival itself is scheduled to take place July 25 to 28, 2019.

FEATURE WHAT NEXT?

As the inaugural Front Triennial wraps up, a conversation on what it actually did for the Cleveland arts community

THOSE OF US INVOLVED IN the arts in Cleveland know that it is, and has been, a cultural destination for decades. But what about the rest of the city?

And what, if anything, will change after the Front Art Triennial, which has received plenty of positive press since its debut? As we near the end of its three-month stint, which runs through Sept. 30, Scene reached out to participants, organizers, artists and people on the street regarding what worked and what could be built upon for the next triennial.

“What is Front? Seriously, I don’t know what that is.” That’s what Amber, in Lakewood, said when we asked her about it.

She’d heard rumblings of a big art show, but didn’t understand what all the fuss was about. One gentleman, who wished to remain anonymous, thought it was “a hoity-toity event that nobody cared about within the city limits unless they were actually involved in the arts. Which begs the question: Could the organizers at Front have pushed harder for the attention of and participation from everyday Clevelanders?

Liz Maugans, the chair of Front’s local artist advisory board, told us, “I think that more support, resources and efforts could be put into programs with young school-age and college students to be involved (with) tours, docents, activators of the Front sites and partnering shows.

On all fronts, they relied on partnering organizations to do this. This could be boosted across the board. Young people need to see this work and be involved.

I loved the show at Spaces because of this. (John) Riepenhoff connected to other artists, curated them into his interest in gun violence as an American City theme, particularly with Cleveland and the tragic death of Tamir Rice. It was specific, immersive and an authentic experience for those involved with Cleveland youth (like Amanda King).”

As artist and author Arabella Proffer stated in her recent observations of the triennial, “The marketing of Front and its choices of artists was to serve the purpose of bringing people in. In fact, almost all marketing efforts were targeted to those beyond a 500-mile radius of Cleveland. Does a gorgeous spread in Architectural Digest inspire a culture junkie in Seattle or a diehard art collector in Dallas to make a weekend out it?

As though we are on a hamster wheel, always something to prove, Cleveland has a hurdle that most other cities with arts events don’t have: the stigma of being Cleveland. Let’s face it, Prospect New Orleans, Art Basel Miami, and the Venice Biennale take place in places people want to visit, anyway.” Proffer astutely continues, “The process of selecting artists was to choose those who have started to ascend, or have already made a splash in other biennials, triennials, and various degrees of academe in the art world. The list of international artists is staggering for a first-time art triennial in any capacity.”

We couldn‘t agree more. “The American Library,” a sequel to “The British Library” created in 2014, is the quiet and visually stunning installation by Yinka Shonibare at the Cleveland Public

Library’s downtown branch. It presents books wrapped in African wax cloth printed with the names of first or second generation U.S. immigrants and African Americans affected by the Great Migration. It certainly tackles the American immigration debate.

We witnessed several visitors participating with the artwork’s interactive features.

And, of course, there was the outcry by the local community that there were no regional artists chosen, although this turned out not to be the case. Six artists were, in fact, chosen to participate, including Elizabeth Emery. Emery, a sculptor whose modus operandus is breaking boundaries and the tension of that containment, is presenting “Hear Her Sports” in Front. “‘Hear Her Sports Glenville’ is one of the biggest projects I’ve ever done,” she says. “I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to do it.

Talking to almost 100 sporty girls and women had a personal impact beyond what I could have expected.

Such wonderful women told their stories: seniors at Glenville Rec Center; Tia Blackmon Mosely, the manager there; Coach Crider a stellar basketball coach and her players; Ms. Destiny, a cheer and drill coach at the FDR Academy Boys & Girls Club; the Glenville Panthers Cheerleaders.” The project began as screen prints

looking back on the lack of media coverage that beleaguers women in sports.

The rogue exhibitions surrounding Front, such as the CAN Triennial turned out with some triumph and even a bit of controversy. Dana Depew’s magnificent and very funny installation piece, “Your Art Sucks,” was perched at the entryway to the 78th Street Studios complex. It did not sit well with some in the local arts community. It did, however, open up dialogue within the general public, which is an arguable measure of success.

The thing that nobody can deny in the city and within its arts community was that the spotlight was on us. From ArtNet to the New York Times and art bloggers, this triennial brought national and international media attention, which is more than we’ve ever seen. Front sparked many opportunities for our own artists, as well.

“Some of the later programs on residencies and Midwest studios, galleries and collective spaces was very good for engagement moments and gave information and connectivity to local artists for the future,” says Maugans.

“I have nothing but admiration for Front and now that they have this foundation year tucked under their belt, new curators and partnerships, new iterations and programming all are ways that possibilities can open up for local artists and continue the impact of Northeast Ohio being a great place to be an artist.”

There is still time to take in the citywide exhibitions, and we’re certainly curious about what Fred Bidwell and the Front team will bring in 2021.

A mind-melting beautiful trip with the paintings of Eileen Dorsey

“IT’S LIKE VAN GOGH WALKED through the forest while on a fever dream,” remarked one visitor during Third Fridays at the 78th Stree Studios, accurately describing artist Eileen Dorsey’s paintings. Dorsey has been on our radar for some time.

From “Watch It Wednesdays” at the studios, where patrons can watch artists at work, to the Dice Game, Dorsey’s Friday Facebook post where anyone can purchase a featured painting at a discount determined by a roll of the dice, her dedication to her craft has definitely pushed the artist into the public eye.

We took the opportunity to hang out with Dorsey recently in her studio/gallery to talk about her work as she prepares for the throngs of people who walk through each Third Friday. We notice immediately that she has a new style emerging. The painter is known for her landscapes, thick impasto of oil paint on the surface. One might say that it’s as if the Fauvists met up with the Impressionists and did some hallucinogens. “I can’t tell you how many times people have told me my paintings look like acid trees,” says Dorsey. She continues after a laugh, “I have actually been approached at least once by a guy asking me if I had any LSD. I’m like, are you serious? You think I actually have that and that I’m selling it during Third Friday? No, no, absolutely not, dude.”

Her paintings are meaty and textural. The leaves seem to almost pop off the canvas and into a pile underneath them. On one side of studio, the work is very leafy; and on the other, not so much. “I try to change it up every Third Friday. I want to showcase some of my newer work, as well as keep some work that people are more familiar with.”

We talk about acrylics versus oil paint. “With the acrylics, I’m almost trying to play a game with your eye,” says Dorsey, “I start with an established palette of (my own) premixed colors and start with a background. I build each layer and then take the original colors and try to distort what the background and the foreground is, but still have

these shapes that float on top, where one’s eye moves around and tries to figure out what’s going on. With the oil paintings, there’s an established source (lighting) in the foreground and background.” We talk about tools of the trade, and she continues, “I apply the oils with a palette knife and mostly I’m only using one size; I have a favorite one and it has the right give. I’ve had palette knives break on me because I’ve been too aggressive with the way I was painting. The acrylic paintings, I’m using different size brushes. I have a spray bottle in my non-painting hand and work instinctually with spraying and wiping down the surface and re-working it. The colors are a bit more vivid in the acrylic paintings.”

Dorsey used to work on panels but, as she put it, they always seemed to chip on the sides and no matter how much gesso she put on the supports, over time she felt like the oil paint just sucked into the wood, causing the paintings to dry unevenly. She now works with canvas mounted onto panels.

“I started putting the canvas over the panels and it’s just easier to transport them that way,” she says. “When it’s just canvas there’s

the threat of puncturing the canvas or bruising it (imagine someone punching the canvas and leaving an indentation), and over time that’s going to break down the paint.”

The new work is branching off the big mural in her studio. It’s looser, more gestural. “I did a small section of that mural during the second Watch it Wednesdays,” she says. “It was one of those things I did on a whim and wanted to work big, and I had nothing to paint on, so I painted on the wall, thinking I would cover it up. It came naturally that I did a wooded scene. I thought, ‘Oh cool, people can see that I do murals,’ because people don’t seem to associate 2-D artists with doing murals, as strange as that sounds.”

Last September, Dorsey collaborated on a large mural on the Stockyard Meats building with Chicago-based artist Ish Muhammad in conjunction with Graffiti Heart, Land Studio and Gordon Square Arts District.

“People love to see paintings in progress,” she says. “I’m painting from background to foreground.

Often people think they are winter scenes when they are halfway finished, which is interesting. If they are regular Third Friday visitors, they stop by to see how the paintings

are moving forward.”

This spring, Dorsey started creating a series called Hogsback Lane, based around multiple visits to the same spot on the Valley Parkway, in the Metroparks. “There are some really beautiful trees at the bottom and I started taking reference photos last fall and have been getting good responses from those paintings in progress,” she says.

One can almost hear the wildlife when looking at Dorsey’s paintings.

“I love these dense, wooded areas.

The temperature changes, the sounds, the smells ... it takes you out of wherever you are , in your day-today. That’s why people connect with it.

“You make work and you are, like, you hope people will like it, and you like it, and you are on a constant journey of discovery.

Making a living off what you love doing is insane, and I can’t believe it’s real sometimes.”

It’s almost like a fever dream.

Fall means a full slate of horror films and festivals to scare you silly

Sure, streaming options from Netflix, Hulu or Shudder abound.

But fortunately for Clevelanders, we’ve got a wide array of big-screen options for anyone looking to get a frightening fix this Halloween season. Between one-night only specialty screenings or buttnumbing movie marathons, there’s something for everyone, no matter what age or how strong-willed you might be.

Cinema Wasteland (Holiday Inn, 15471 Royalton Rd., Strongsville) Strongsville is invaded twice a year by one of the oldest and rowdiest alternative film conventions in the country, Cinema Wasteland. This year’s fall show contains classics on 16-mm, new releases of independently made horror films and countless cult favorites, but the central focus will be the cast reunion and screening of the original 1981 slasher classic, My Bloody Valentine.

Wasteland Weekend is Oct. 5 to 7 and a full lineup of events and ticket purchases can be found at cinemawasteland.com Cleveland Cinematheque (11610 Euclid Ave.) The good people behind the Cleveland Cinematheque at the Cleveland Institute of Art curate some of the most unique screening opportunities imaginable, serving as one of the “premier repertory movie theaters” in the country, according to the New York Times.

This fall, the Cinematheque slate features first-time screenings as well as all-time favorites.

Dementia 13, a Roger Corman produced Psycho knockoff and one of the earliest films from Francis Ford Coppola, will have its Cleveland revival premiere and show throughout the month.

The often forgotten Targets, about a psychopathic sniper and a has-been horror movie star (Boris Karloff) who has retired because scary films can no longer compete with the terrors of everyday life, will screen in 35-mm.

My Bloody Valentine comes to Cinema Wasteland.

Goblin keyboardist Maurizio Guarini will present a live performance of his original score to the first-ever feature film produced in Italy, Dante’s Inferno, showcasing horrific cinematic imagery decades before such giallo classics as Dario Argento’s Deep Red and Suspiria, both scored by Goblin and Guarini.

Newly restored double features of Argento’s The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and Cat O’ Nine Tails keep the giallo running red, and triplefeature nights of The Fog, Evil Dead and Evil Dead II offer a little more name recognition among horror favorites.

Aut-O-Rama (33395 Lorain Rd. North Ridgeville) As is traditional, the Aut-O-Rama Drive-In will close out its season with special screenings of retro horror classics, including familyfriendly options. On the scarier side of things, the new reboot of Halloween is scheduled to play alongside three of the following four

films: Hellraiser, The Thing, Return of the Living Dead or Evil Dead 2.

For families, Goosebumps 2, E.T., Ghostbusters and Corpse Bride are slated to screen with Little Shop of Horrors serving as the backup for Goosebumps 2. As of now, all of the scheduled films are tentative and will be confirmed closer to the show date on Oct. 21.

Cedar Lee Theatre (2163 Lee Rd., Cleveland Heights) The Oct. 6 midnight screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show is an absolute must this fall, but the schedule of scary movies at the Cedar Lee is pretty solid for 2018. The Addams Family plays on Oct. 6 and 7, as does the wildly dark and twisted Await Further Instructions. As part of the National Theatre’s stage-to-film productions, viewers can see Danny Boyle’s stage adaptation of Frankenstein with Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular creator’s monster on Oct. 22 and 24 or Jonny Lee Miller on Oct. 29 and 31. In honor of the 50th anniversary of Night of the Living Dead, there will also be celebratory screenings on Oct. 24 and 25.

Tower City Cinemas (230 West Huron Rd.) In conjunction with the most popular horror movie website in the world, Bloody-Disgusting.com’s Retro Nightmares cinema series is coming to Tower City with the 1983 slasher classic, House on Sorority Row on Sept. 27, a double-feature of the underseen sequels Amityville: The Evil Escapes and Amityville: It’s About Time on Oct. 4, and a double feature of the totally underrated Sweet Sixteen and cult-favorite nunsploitation flick The Convent on Oct. 11.

Capitol Theatre (1390 West 65th St.) Opening up the haunting season, the pregnancy nightmare film featuring horror icons Scout TaylorCompton, Sid Haig and Bill Moseley, Cynthia hits on Oct. 1. On Oct. 24, the only “true” horror film to ever win a Best Picture Oscar (Silence of the Lambs is a crime drama; fight me), The Exorcist, will spider-walk its way into the theater as part of the Happy Hour Classics series, which means a spooky specialty cocktail hour precedes the screening. For the 40th anniversary of the horror classic, producer Richard Rubinstein has made a new digital 3-D version of Dawn of the Dead, which will screen starting Oct. 26.

However, the crown jewel of Cleveland’s horror movie screenings is the annual 12 Hours of Terror on Oct. 20. Curated each year by Cleveland Cinemas’ Dave Huffman, this Halloween highlight event will feature Phantasm, Bubba Ho-Tep, Candyman, The Human Centipede, Event Horizon, The Hills Have Eyes and the highly debated and coveted “secret screening.” We’ve featured this event as the “Best Place to Binge Watch Movies That Isn’t Netflix,” because absolutely nothing beats the all-day marathon of gruesome goodness.

Additionally, The House with a Clock in Its Walls, Halloween, Goosebumps 2 and HellFest all have wide-release screenings in theaters all across Cleveland and the surrounding area.

Shanty Circus Acrobats explore, breach, and dismantle the physical boundaries that society imposes on daily interactions, exposing the walls we erect to shield ourselves from trust, love, and intimacy. We’ll tumble, balance, swirl from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Cabaret, using bodies, traditional circus props, and even our post-industrial landscape!

Accidental Comedy Producing some of Cleveland’s best independent stand up comedy shows, Accidental Comedy Club is a collective of performers dedicated to enriching the arts in Cleveland thru live comedy and other productions.

Velvet Hearts! Cleveland Ms. Lavender Bitters and the Velvet Hearts are an eclectic and diverse group of performers. As advocates of the queer burlesque community, they’ve broken barriers in the performance art world. Founder of the first LGBTQ burlesque troupe in Cleveland, Sonia Restivo, hopes to open the doors for performers of all types, shapes, sizes, and backgrounds to come together and express themselves in ways they couldn’t elsewhere, creating a safe haven for artists of all shades of grey.

The Manhattan Project Cleveland Lab The Manhattan Project performs numerous events throughout the year, including Play Labs open to anyone who wants to participate as an actor. Designed to build community through unexpected locations and a wide range of audiences, The Manhattan Project even adopted several new performers from the audience after past performances at IngenuityFest.

This show demonstrates the nature of scientific inquiry into the unseen, both measurable and knowable. It is also about the “air” that encompasses us socially, our shared joy and responsibility. In Pneumatica, we celebrate the engineering that has driven our success as a species, while referring to the other meanings of pneuma: breath, spirit, weather. Well, how about five of your friendly neighborhood bookstores? Here’s what you should be putting on your nightstand before 2018 checks out.

From Loganberry Books (13051 Larchmere Blvd., Shaker Heights): The Real Lolita by Sarah Weinman. Weinman is an international expert on crime fiction, but this is her meticulously researched and grippingly told true crime book on the real events that inspired Vladimir Nabakov to write Lolita.

Sea Prayer by Khaled Hosseini.

Halfway to CIFF 43 To mark the halfway point to the 2019 iteration of the Cleveland International Film Festival, the Capitol Theatre will host a special screening of shorts at 9 tonight.

Sacred Hair, a film about a chance meeting between an ill boy and a Muslim woman in a Montreal park, will screen. It won the CIFF’s 2018 award for best live-action short. Other winners, such as The Driver is Red, Spice Sisters, Zion, Bagheera and Stag, will screen as well. The screening will also include a sneak peek of one of the shorts that will show at the 2019 festival. STAGE THRILLS AND CHILLS? MORE LIKE YAWNS AND SHRUGS A ghost story evaporates before your eyes in The Woman in Black at the Cleveland Play House

IF YOU’RE A FAN OF COUNT Floyd, the host of SCTV’s “Monster Chiller Horror Theater” that was on the tube from the late 1970s to early 1980s, have I got a show for you! Well, not really. Because Count Floyd’s sketch bit, as enacted by comedian Joe Flaherty, was intended to be a sendup of the cheesy TV horror film genre. And it was hilarious.

However, The Woman in Black, which was staged last year by our local community theater, Clague Playhouse, is now on a national tour and is playing at the Cleveland Play House. It tries desperately to be scary, but it’s about as frightening as Count Floyd, wearing his cheap vampire drag and speaking in his corny Bela Lugosi voice, trying vainly to scare little kids.

This play, which is definitely not a parody although it seems like one, has been a big hit in London for the past 30 years, which explains a lot about the British, who made Benny Hill a star. Based on a novella by Susan Hill (who evidently is no relation to Benny and who also is no Edgar Allan Poe), this adaptation by Stephen Mallatratt as directed by Robin Herford is long, boring and laughably inept when it comes to being scary. Indeed, you could visit any of the countless local Halloween haunted houses next month and get several bigger jolts than this play ever produces.

Let’s put it this way: If you were chaperoning a gaggle of kids on vacation in a cabin in the woods and you knew those children possessed rather fragile natures, you might tell them a mildly diverting 20-minute spooky ghost story before beddy-bye. You might even point a flashlight in their eyes and make loud sounds now and then, to give them some shivers.

But there would be nothing too terribly upsetting to disturb their sleep.

Well, the creators of this play have taken that concept and

extended it beyond two hours, filling the time with interminable skeins of direct address storytelling. This format results in, of course, lots of telling and very little showing, a style that quickly becomes tedious for anyone over the age of 9. Or frankly, anyone under 9.

Admittedly, the play begins with some promise, as we are introduced to a young Actor who has been contracted to help an older gentleman, Arthur Kipps, dramatize terrifying events he experienced years before. Since the elderly chap is not a performer, the young fellow steps into his role and Kipps is persuaded to play other characters in the story.

This conceit is amusing for a while, as the old guy struggles to read his words with any sense of character, but that one-joke pony gets tired after a while and eventually elderly chap turns into an accomplished thespian so the story can slowly (oh ... so ... slowly) unfurl.

Since this play-within-a-play is set in the early 1950s, with extended flashbacks to 30 years earlier, it’s performed in period costumes and, apparently, with an absence of any contemporary

suddenly opens and, you know, things covered in sheets. All that’s missing is Abbott and Costello and a portrait on the wall with roving eyes. Young Arthur (as played by the Actor) prowls around the place and meets some quaint gentlemen (as played by the real Arthur).

Then young Art starts seeing apparitions, such as a woman in black who mysteriously appears

theatrical effects that might enliven the proceedings. Indeed, at one point an invisible dog is rescued from an invisible pit of mud, resulting in a non-existent sigh of relief.

The story itself is so predictable it verges on a spoof. There’s a foreboding castle in a foggy bog where an old spinster died. The joint is called Eelmarsh House (oooh, scary!), and it’s full of long hallways that we never see, dark rooms, a locked door that

and disappears in, you guessed it, the nearby graveyard. And on it goes. And on, and on.

Seriously, it feels like we’re all being played and this is really an attempt at a fiendishly clever satire that doesn’t quite work.

The clues are many. The pre-show announcement carefully cautions people not to let their phone screens light up during the show, lest the production’s delicate, low lighting effects be disturbed. Hell, you could have the house lights

up full for the whole show and it wouldn’t negatively affect anything.

Also, in the program there is an invitation: “Wowed by the set?

Feel free to snap a photo before the show.” This supposed wow-inducing set amounts to gray drapes, a chair, a stool, a wicker trunk and a clothes rack covered with a sheet.

Eat your heart out, Les Miserables.

Credit must go to the two performers, Bradley Armacost as Kipps and Adam Wesley Brown, who plays the Actor. They work diligently and generate some muchappreciated chuckles from time to time, as this rickety ghost story lumbers to a close. Chloe Baldwin also participates briefly in the title role, a character so minimally impactful they forgot to include her in the program’s cast list.

Are there any chills to be had?

There are a couple tragic events at the very end of the play that, of course, happen off stage and which we are told about briefly. Don’t want to give anyone bad dreams. ’Night, kids ...

EAT SECOND COMING The Dinerbar on Clifton marries favorites from its predecessor with delightful new offerings

DURING A PHONE CALL, OWNER Perry Drosos confirmed my own personal observations regarding the premium for seats at the newly opened Dinerbar on Clifton, the successor to the long-running restaurant of the (almost) same name. Two separate mid-week visits revealed dining rooms filled to the brim with fervent guests, patios that were operating at full capacity, and yet more hopeful diners shuffling their way up to the host stand. I can only imagine the scene on a sunny Saturday morning.

“We kind of wanted to start slowly, but it wasn’t at all like that,” said Drosos, adding that the latest reports tally a staggering 500-diner-per-day average.

Who knew that the smartest play in the restaurant world is to shut down, take a 2-year hiatus, and then reopen at a completely different address?

While the Diner’s last few years of existence (and nonexistence) reads like the plot line from a maudlin soap opera, the story appears to be coasting toward a pleasant denouement. The big winner in all of this, of course, is Drosos, who never again has to endure the loathsome question: “So, when are you opening?”

Loyal fans of the original diner, which operated for 17 years just 160 meters away, will quickly observe how much has changed.

But they will also appreciate how much has stayed the same. A double-sided menu is long — too long, perhaps — because it blends old favorites like garden vegetable chowder, mac and cheese and patty melts with new arrivals like crab cakes, risotto balls and a poke bowl.

There’s still a counter at which to belly up, but this one curves its way through the heart of the space. And if you couldn’t discern from the new moniker, all of the above now comes with a sidecar of beer, wine and cocktails.

In keeping with the “Modern American Diner” tagline, Drosos and his team transformed a featureless commercial space into a sleek, stylish and subtly retro

interior that manages to conjure the spirit of a neighborhood gathering place. Graphic Fornasetti wallpaper provides an Insta-worthy backdrop. Chrometrimmed Formica tables fit the part, but they’re paired with cushy leatherette chairs and booths.

Double the square footage of the old spot means diners now get a main-level restroom. We also get a patio, which is elevated above the street and sidewalk.

Of diners we require few things, among them broad menus, breakfast all day and snappy service. Dinerbar nails two out of

meaning when it includes a bracing margarita ($9) as a side dish. Wellmade corned beef hash ($9.95) is delicious any time of day, especially when it features fat and salty chunks of meat, tender potatoes and sweet sauteed onions beneath a roof of over-easy eggs. The dish is joined by a handful of other egg dishes that can be ordered clear up till close. Items such as French toast, pancakes and eggs Benedict, on the other hand, are reserved for mornings and weekend brunch.

three and is well on its way to a near-perfect score. New tablet-style order systems seem to gum up the works, especially when they double as the wine list, requiring the server to hand it over. One night on the patio, we watched with empathy and agony as a threesome cooled their jets (and food) while waiting for one of the entrees to arrive.

Service at the bar, on the other hand, was swift and efficient.

Breakfast for dinner takes on new

include a plate of bacon and cheddar topped fries ($7.95) with ranch dipping sauce for snacking, before landing at a classic like the tuna melt ($9.95), paired with crackly onion rings, or the hot roast turkey ($10.95) with mashed potatoes. The thin-sliced meat is surprisingly flavorful, the potatoes unusually silky-smooth, and the steamed green beans a dead ringer for those from a can.

Dinerbar excels at the basics,

like BLTs, club sandwiches, wraps, burgers and patty melts. The entree section alone approaches two dozen dishes, most of which I can’t personally vouch for. But if you can’t decide between a New York strip steak, chicken Parm or shepherd’s pie for dinner, this is the restaurant to visit. That shepherd’s pie ($11.95) takes some liberties with the time-honored recipe, but the result is every bit as savory, satisfying and filling.

One of the brightest storylines at Dinerbar is the sweets program, overseen by pastry chef Annabella Andricks. A glass-fronted display case literally taunts guests with mile-high salted caramel cheesecakes, giant swirled Ho-Hos and rainbow-colored “funfetti” cakes fit for a unicorn.

Owner Drosos, who’s been working this beat since the Clifton Lunch days, has seen it all. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t liking what he sees.

“I’m very grateful for the business,” he tells me. “People loved my old place and are very connected to it and the food. It’s all very touching and humbling to know that people appreciate what you do.”

AN ECLECTIC AFFAIR 10 BANDS TO SEE AT THIS YEAR’S INGENUITYFEST

A MULTI-MEDIA ART AND music exposition that aims to showcase underground artists and bands, IngenuityFest takes over the Hamilton Collaborative space in the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. James Carol, the local promoter who runs Cleveland Music City, has booked an eclectic mix of bands. Here’s a guide to some of the acts worth catching.

of the band’s latest release, last year’s Young Lovers/Dystopian Future, stems from lengthy sound experiments at a home studio in Gates Mills. Surrounded by guitars, cameras and a warm, wooden ambiance, the guys ran sounds through an old Hammond Auto-Vari analog drum machine. What came out on the other end were stunning, polyrhythmic backbones that formed the genesis of this new material.

1. AUTOMATIC WEAPONS

2. CEREAL BANTER

Automatic Weapons made a splash last year in the local music scene without so much as an opening slot at the corner bar. The multi-instrumentalist duo — Vinny DiFranco and Michael Bashur — hail from Ohio Sky, which scorched Northeast Ohio with an ethereal blend of heavy riffs and soaring soundscapes for about a decade.

The artsy, Flaming Lips-like Cereal Banter formed a few years back, and the local group’s debut single, 2010’s “Edible Confetti,” a song that features squiggly guitar riffs and echoing vocals, established just how off-kilter the band could be. Recently, band leader Joseph Joseph teamed up with singerbassist Nicholas Gunzburg, a local musician who was a fan of the band.

They collaborated on the cassetteonly Oatmeal Outburst and quickly recorded another album, Junk Jazz.

You should expect the unexpected with this avant garde act.

3. THE DREEMERS Pay no attention to this Akron act’s misnomer of a name. This isn’t some dreamy, hippie bullshit group; instead, the Dreemers are one of the most raucous and riotous bands around. As the group told Scene late last year, “We’ll have a punkier song or a bluesier song and then throw some kind of riff at the end, and it will go into doo-wop or some other genre. We just jam a lot and when we do that we blend styles together.”

All of those styles can be heard on the group’s debut album Beach Mode, which is by far one of the most fun locally released records of last year. The three-piece, together since 2015, could easily roll into schtick

Kingsized, this Denver-based indie rock act’s most recent album, offers the perfect mix of Dressy Bessy traditionalism and successful experimentation and comes across as an excellent representation of the band. Although often branded as twee or bubblegum pop on account of an early association with the Kindercore record label, Dressy Bessy has matured to embrace rock ’n’ roll attitude. Not infrequently, singer-guitarist Tammy Ealom evokes the vocal gruffness of the Deal sisters or Kim Shattuck of the Muffs as she sings over fuzzedout guitars. New tracks like “Pop Phenom,” “Kingsized” and “Make Mine Violet” will invite fans

Herzog is a Cleveland rock band through and through. Since forming in 2000, the group has brought its super relatable brand of rock ’n’ roll to venues all over town. Not that we’re complaining. In fact, for those in need of a new Herzog record, it seems something is on the way. The group hasn’t put out a new album since 2014’s Boys, but according to its Facebook page, a new full-length could be fully cooked by the end of the year. That means more of Tony Vorell’s wise lyrics (yes, just like Elton John, the band has a lyricist who never performs on stage) paired with Nick Tolar’s melodies. The group’s songs run the gamut from straight-up party music to more lyrical and insightful tunes. Their IngenuityFest performance is sure to pull out all this and more. (Morrison)

6. ILLUMINATI HOTTIES An L.A.-based indie-pop outfit fronted by singer Sarah Tudzin, Illuminati Hotties just released its debut album Kiss Yr Frenemies to wide acclaim. The lead single, “Cuff” features soft vocals and dreamy synthesizer riffs before distorted guitars kick in and Tudzin begins to let loose on those howling vocals.

We’ve written about this band a lot, and with good reason: Mourning [A] BLKstar offers fresh surprises nearly every day. The group’s debut album, Blk Muzak, is out now, awaiting eager ears.

It’s a perfect entry point as James Longs, LaToya Kent and Kyle Kidd’s enveloping vocals wrap around RA Washington’s dynamic beats. They’ve been playing shows and festivals all over town for more than two years now (they topped our 2017 Bands to

Watch list), and each show is another surreal, enigmatic experience that treats listeners to a heady, groovy experience. (Sandy)

8. OSHUN As one of IngenuityFest’s headliners, the duo Oshun truly embodies what the event is all about. Combining the digital with the acoustic, in beats and layered harmonies, the duo’s music acts as a connector between hip-hop’s past and future. Meeting as students at NYU, D.C.-area transplants Thandiwe and Niambi Sala found that making music together made getting through school all the more enjoyable — and it didn’t hurt when the local scene and mainstream music outlets started paying attention either. The group’s debut album, bittersweet vol. 1, which dropped earlier this year, shows a culmination of all things spiritual, analytical and even political. Yes, their earlier single, “Not My President,” should also bring the house down tonight. (Morrison)

9. PUNCH DRUNK TAGALONGS

Punch Drunk Tagalongs come from a long tradition of bands led by fierce female singers. Anchored by equally vulnerable and ferocious lead singer Alisha Stahnke, the band writes songs that run the gamut of emotional intensity. The band tours extensively throughout Ohio and surrounding regions, continuing to develop an easy chemistry. On “Hazy,” a tune from their debut album, pulsing guitar work glides along and spikes, matching Stahnke’s bursts of frenetic energy. Inspired by the grunge and riot grrrl movements, Punch Drunk Tagalong’s live shows allow their frenzied instrumentals to come alive.

10. TIME CAT Named after a children’s book, the Akron-based indie rock group Time Cat has recently gained momentum.

The online music magazine Noisey published a profile of the group last year, and the band just recorded a live album at the new Akron Recording Company (ARC) recording studio.

Locals Ben Patrick of the Dreemers and Nate Butcher of See Creatures founded the studio, which offers both analog and digital recording.

The band’s music features a mix of psychedelia and stoner rock as songs such as the Zeppelin-inspired “Into the Ocean” start slow before building a momentous wall of sound. (Niesel)

MUSIC A MIDWESTERN SENSIBILITY Singer Brett Eldredge talks about growing up in ‘the middle of nowhere’

WHEN COUNTRY SINGER Brett Eldredge stopped in Cleveland last summer to perform with superstar Luke Bryan at Progressive Field, he tried to spend some time in the city and not just hole up in his hotel room before heading over to the stadium for the concert.

“I got to roam around Cleveland that day,” says Eldredge in a short 10-minute phone call from a Denver tour stop. He comes to Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica with opener Devin Dawson at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. “I love the vibe there.

There are cool new restaurants there. I’m a big believer in checking out the cities where I play. I can’t sit on the bus for a long time. I really love Cleveland and can see the city’s charm.

I’m excited to be back as the headliner now. Being there with Luke at the baseball stadium was amazing.”

Eldredge’s affection for Cleveland probably has something to do with his Midwestern upbringing. He grew up in Paris, Illinois, a city he describes as “the middle of nowhere.”

“Coming from a place like that, you really create your own connections with people, and I think that’s why some of the most amazing people in the world are from the Midwest,” he says, adding that his biggest inspiration was crooner Frank Sinatra. “I love the values I was brought up with and have carried on through my life and the connection with people. I think that’s why I love music so much.”

A late bloomer, Eldredge didn’t start writing his own songs until his junior year of college. He then moved to Nashville where he became inspired by the people there who he says were “standing up on stage, telling their own stories in front of people and playing guitar.”

“At that point, I realized that I needed to figure out how to do all that stuff,” he says. “I

developed a love for country music and never looked back.”

“I didn’t push myself on any labels because I wanted to be ready,” he says. “I took my time.

In 2010, he released the single, “Raymond.” The song made a decent splash on the Billboard charts, but when

the followup single flopped, Eldredge says he knew it wasn’t going to be easy to kickstart his career.

“I got that first song out there, and it got me into the dance,” he says. “My second single didn’t even chart. I knew then that I needed to dive in and get it right. I wanted to make that debut album happen. [The album] went No. 1, but it didn’t happen overnight. I’m glad it didn’t happen overnight. I think if my first song would have gone to No. 1 right away, I would’ve thought it was easy.”

With his latest album, a selftitled effort, Eldredge says he sought to “dive even deeper.” The twangy album opener, “Love Someone,” sets the tone for the album. “I’m falling for you over and over again,” Eldredge sings over a tapestry of acoustic guitars and mandolins. With its sonic swells and exuberant vocals, “Superhero” has pop/ rock crossover potential, and the ballad “The Long Way” shows off Eldredge’s soulful voice. The midtempo “Cycles,” a ballad that finds Eldredge talking more than he sings, chronicles falling in and out of love with the same person. “[With Brett Eldredge], I wanted to show more of the depth that I have, and I want to continue to grow,” he says.

“It’s got big vocal moments and songs about my honest relationship with love. It’s not just about being in love but struggling to find love too. I don’t wanna hide anything. The more honest I can be with my music, the more special [the songs] come out. I think the album came out really special because of that. It’s got some breakup songs on it, but I think it’s a ‘reality of love’ record. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows.

It’s ups and downs, and I’ve sure been through all of them.

I relate to that experience a lot, and when I start writing about that, I just can’t stop.”

Khan reportedly entered therapy before making the album.

While we wouldn’t want to insist he take that approach each time he records a new album, it certainly reaped dividends this time around.

AN ACOUSTIC FOUNDATION: All the songs were constructed as acoustic tracks, and then the band ďŹ&#x201A;eshed them out for the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s debut, Between You, Me and the Cherry Tree. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I really like the other guys in the band, and I feel like Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m in a band with four clones of me,â&#x20AC;? says Joyce. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We decided to cut a record with some songs that are as old as 12 or 13 years old.â&#x20AC;? Joyce and the albumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s producer, Kevin Koch, actually started playing music together years ago in the local indie rock act

I’m a 62-year-old woman. I was married for 33 years and left five years ago. We hadn’t gotten along for years, but he never stopped wanting or valuing me for sex — in spite of treating me like a household appliance and cheating on me regularly. Not long after the marriage ended, I met a guy online (my same age) who ticked nearly every box on my partner checklist — one of which was an ongoing interest in maintaining sexual relations. In the beginning, things were hot and crazy — but they cooled after a few months (going from once or twice a day to maybe once a month). Other than that, the relationship continued to grow and we enjoyed being together.

I tried to carefully broach the subject, but he was not forthcoming. I’m not proud of it, but I checked his internet history. Big surprise: LOTS OF PORN. No animals or children, but pretty much everything else, with an accent on trans. Eventually, I admitted my sleuthing and asked if his viewing habits were an indicator of his interests or the reason he had turned away from me. After the anger subsided, he explained that he had been single most of his life and had more or less gotten used to taking care of business solo. The bottom line is that we are compatible in most every other area and have built a comfortable life together. The struggle for me is more ego-driven. I’m no raving beauty, but I am reasonably fit and attractive for my age, and (used to) enjoy feeling desired and valued sexually. Can I get to the place of letting go of that and enjoy the rare occasions of physical congress?

This relationship doesn’t just sound unfulfilling sexually, SAP, it sounds infuriating generally. You entered into this relationship under

false pretenses. You let your partner know that “an ongoing interest in maintaining sexual relations” was a priority for you, and he allowed you to believe it was a priority for him. In fairness to him, SAP, he may not have known himself to be incapable of sustaining a strong sexual connection, seeing as he’s been single for most of his life. But even if he wasn’t aware he couldn’t meet your needs then, that doesn’t change the fact that you aren’t valued/fucked the way you want to be valued/fucked now.

“I think her best option is to stay friends with this guy but start dating and having sex with others,” said Price. “She could continue to have occasional sex with this man if they both agree to a nonexclusive, friendswith-benefits arrangement. Or they could become platonic pals, if that’s better for them. But it’s imperative that she talk candidly with him.”

You write that you tried to “carefully broach the subject, but he was not forthcoming,” but Price wonders whether you were forthcoming yourself. “‘Carefully broach’ usually means ‘I was vague,’” said Price. “Suppose, instead, she said, ‘I really value you, but I don’t think we’re well-matched sexually. How can we adjust our relationship so we’re not putting sexual pressure on each other and we’re both free to find other sexual outlets?’” Do you have to exit this loving relationship to get your needs met, or can you stay with your current partner, a man who meets your emotional and social needs, while getting your sexual needs met elsewhere?

“SAP deserves a partner who matches her sexually,” said Price. “I know from personal experience and from the swelling of my inbox that many of us find hot, fabulous sexual partners in our 60s, 70s, and beyond.

It’s never too late. She shouldn’t settle for sex that’s less than satisfying, and neither should he. If that means she looks for new partners and he returns to his solo pleasure with the porn he prefers and the hand that knows him best, they might both be happier.”
