THE CITY OF CLEVELAND THIS week came to an agreement with the family of Kenny Smith that will pay the family $3.7 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit stemming from the night of March 10, 2012, when an off-duty Cleveland police officer shot and killed the 20-yearold aspiring rapper downtown.

Smith had gotten caught up in the tense aftermath of a show at Wilbert’s. Someone fired a shot; things escalated. Smith hopped in a car with some friends from his neighborhood. Police were looking for a suspect in a Saturn, and officer Roger Jones, who was in the area at a bar having a drink, went out into the streets, finding Smith and two others in a car. Jones claimed Smith lunged for a gun before Jones fired.

Scene featured the case in a September 2012 cover story.

Then-prosecutor Tim McGinty in 2014 ruled the shooting justified and praised Jones for “correctly and heroically [taking] action to protect the safety of the citizens of Cleveland.”

Police suspected the driver of the car, Devonta Hill, was the one who fired the shots that got everything started, and the prosecutor’s office criminally indicted him for Smith’s death, among other charges. Hill would eventually plead out to lesser charges, but not before years of legal wrangling and waiting.

Smith’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Jones, one that would present a whole host of discrepancies with the officer’s version of events. A federal jury found in their favor, that Jones, not Hill, was responsible for Smith’s death, and that Jones had used excessive force. They came down with a $5.5-million judgment.

Cleveland appealed, of course, and considered using a dubious legal strategy it applied in the case of David Ayers, who was wrongfully convicted of a 1999 murder and spent 11 years behind bars before being exonerated.

In that case, a jury awarded a

$13.2 million judgment against the two Cleveland police officers behind the conviction after a 2013 civil trial.

That judgment though, was against the officers personally, not the city.

Cleveland then hired bankruptcy attorneys to help the officers through that process, getting the judgment wiped out in the bankruptcy, despite the fact the officers had the right to indemnification. Basically, the city should have been on the hook for the payout. That issue remains very much up in the air and is currently before the Ohio Supreme Court.

An appeals court earlier this year upheld the jury verdict in the Smith case, as well as the decision by the previous judge to reduce the judgment to $4 million. But lawyers for the Smith family entered into negotiations with the city specifically because of what happened with Ayers. Though Jones didn’t file for bankruptcy like the officers in the other case, there was still murkiness on the question of whether Cleveland would pay, and when.

“We didn’t want to go through the same kind of litigation that David

Ayers went through,” attorney Terry Gilbert told Cleveland.com.

Last week’s $3.7 million settlement still needs to be approved by a federal judge and probate court. It’s a large number, one of the largest the city will have ever paid out, but Cleveland has put Smith’s family through six and a half years of stress and struggle to get here, and you wonder what kind of justice that is.

Cuyahoga County Passes LGBTQ+ Protection Ordinance, Despite Idiot Parade’s Return For more than four hours last Tuesday, upwards of 200 people poured into the council chambers of the Cuyahoga County Administrative Headquarters to speak on record either against, or in favor, of the county’s proposed LGBTQ+ discrimination protection ordinance.

Current protections for Cuyahoga County include race, color, religion, military status, national origin, disability, age, ancestry and gender.

The ordinance proposed would add sexual orientation and gender identiďŹ cation to that list.

Six cities in Cuyahoga County already have these protections, including Cleveland, covering 43 percent of county residents; the ordinance would move that number to 100 percent.

The ordinance also creates a Cuyahoga County Commission on Human Rights, so if someone experiences discrimination, they can take the complaint to the commission which could award attorney fees, enforce civil penalties and order the discriminating party to stop.

Those in opposition presumably arrived early, because they somehow managed to snag chairs while a majority of supporters were left standing along the walls and occupying the overow rooms. Members in support of the ordinance, and countless members of the LGBTQ+ community were easily identiďŹ able, all wearing rainbow ribbons provided by Equality Ohio.

The ordinance passed with a vote of 8 to 3, split along party lines.

District 1’s Nan Baker, District 6’s Jack Schron and District 5’s Michael J. Gallagher, who has an openly gay son, were the three votes in opposition.

Baker, Schron and Gallagher, all Republicans, cited the “broad languageâ€? of the ordinance as their reasons for voting no — Schron was bafed there wasn’t a religious exemption — while many council members in support recognized that

UPFRONT although imperfect, this ordinance was a step in the right direction, and amendments could be made in the future to truly make the ordinance as perfect as possible.

This was a historic vote, yes, and the benefits of adding the LGBTQ+ community as a protected class will have immeasurable benefits to Cuyahoga County. However, it absolutely must be acknowledged the strength, perseverance and resilience of the queer community, particularly the transgender community, that had to sit through four hours of disparaging and downright hateful comments, another parade of “ignorant idiots,” if you will.

LGBTQ+ people are no strangers to being openly discriminated against with ignorant rhetoric, but being forced to sit in a room with fellow neighbors’ false information and painfully incorrect beliefs touted as facts, without the ability to comment in retaliation, was extremely difficult.

Opposers of the ordinance compared transgender people to perverts and pedophiles, discounted

the validity of their gender identity and accused transwomen of being potential rapists in a dress, hoping to use the bathroom as a hunting ground. There were a lot of tears being held back, a lot of fists clenched in anxiety and an exhibition of strength from our transgender community that will be forever unmatched.

Transphobic people are straightup obsessed with the bathroom. If we all took a shot every time some

religious nut went up to talk about “the bathroom,” we’d all have died of alcohol poisoning within an hour.

It’s important to note, this ordinance is not a “bathroom bill,” and even if it was, as Kevin Schmotzer, Mayor Frank Jackson’s newly appointed LGBTQ+ liaison for the City of Cleveland came for a second week to report, North Carolina lost over $3.76 billion after passing their wildly offensive bathroom bill.

The woman continued pointing and yelling at the council as security had her removed from the chambers, audience members applauding and cheering for her to get out.

All of the arguments of the opposition began to run together after so many hours, but there was some unintentional comedic relief when a woman asked, “Do you remember the scene from Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ?”

A white woman comparing the “christian persecution” of not being able to legally hate gay people to that of the crucifixion of Christ — as well as name dropping the notoriously bigoted Mel Gibson — was too much for people to handle.

Laughter exploded, and president Brady had to remind the audience to be respectful, no matter how much we disagree with what’s being said.

There were some moments of relief, including Townhall owner, Bobby George who came to publicly disavow the comments made by his father, Tony George, at the previous meeting and to speak in full support of the ordinance. Taking such a public stand couldn’t have been easy, but there was a sense of solace from those that recognize the power George has in this county, and hearing that he was on our side.

As the hours passed, people began to leave. A majority of those who spoke in opposition would leave immediately after saying their piece, leaving the council chambers filled with supporters of the ordinance, who were mostly people who will actually be impacted by the passing of the legislation.

University Heights mayor Michael Dylan Brennan spoke in favor of the ordinance, leaving the audience gobsmacked by saying, “We live in an area where you can be married to the love of your life on a Saturday and be fired from your job over it on a Monday.”

The 8-3 vote didn’t come as a shock to anyone, but there was an eruption of cheers and tears the second the ordinance’s tally was announced. Cuyahoga County did a good thing last week, and took a historic step for equality in Northeast Ohio, and the entire country.

Cleveland-Based Season 3 of Serial Notches Best Debut Numbers Yet for the Series What did the producers and hosts of Serial expect when the long-awaited third season of the hit podcast dropped last week? Probably not the biggest debut in the show’s history.

To be fair, no one knew what Serial was when it launched, so it’s hard to judge in-the-moment stats from Season 1 (the first episode was only downloaded 86,000 times on the first day). But after its headline-making trek through the true-crime case of Adnan Syed, Season 2, tackling the Bowe Bergdahl story, was highly anticipated. The first-day downloads of the first episode came in at 1.34 million. The first day of the second episode, only 1.24 million came back.

Season 3, as you know by now, is set in Cleveland and focuses on a handful of cases large and small in the Cuyahoga County criminal justice system. (They’re great, by the way.)

And they’ve set new high marks for Sarah Koenig and crew. Episode 1 was downloaded 1.46 million times on the first day; that number was 1.43 million on the first day for Episode 2.

“One of the things that’s stressed me out about Serial the last few years has been audience expectation. That we’re supposed to be true-crime, or just one deep investigative story, or some other easy descriptor,” Serial co-creator and executive producer Julie Snyder told Vulture. “So to come out this season and say, ‘Instead we’re gonna do a bunch of stories from Cleveland!’ Well … we were admittedly a bit nervous before the release. So these launch numbers — and the response to the episodes in just the first few days — have been so gratifying. Because we really believe these stories are important. The world is crazy now and there are so many podcasts and there’s such wonderful journalism being produced … it’s heartening that people are excited for us to keep going.” — Vince Grzegorek

Wanda C. Jones on Judge Daniel Gaul: What Good is Experience if You’re Biased?

During a judicial candidates’

forum last Tuesday night at the South Euclid United Church of Christ, Wanda C. Jones, an AfricanAmerican Republican candidate running against incumbent Daniel Gaul (of Serial fame) for a seat on the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas, said her lack of experience, relative to Gaul’s, shouldn’t be a deciding factor in the race.

“What good is experience,” she said, “if you’re not unbiased?”

Jones has practiced law for just under seven years, and is currently a partner at a private practice, Axner & Jones, in Solon.

She said that even though her opponent, Daniel Gaul, has nearly 28 years on the bench, his behavior in the courtroom, as captured in Episode 2 of the popular podcast, demonstrates personal bias.

When moderator Leon Bibb asked Jones if she’d heard the Serial podcast, Jones said that she had. She referenced her six children — African-American sons and Hispanic stepchildren — and said that she’d treat the people who came before her with respect.

She mentioned how hard she’d worked to obtain her law degree, attending Cleveland-Marshall at night while working and raising a family during the day, and said she brought her life experiences with her to the courtroom.

In a brief audience Q&A, she referenced her Plain Dealer endorsement interview, during which, she said, she and Gaul had disagreed on a number of issues.

Among them was the value of “alternative dockets,” which Jones said she recognizes and supports.

The Plain Dealer/Cleveland.com editorial board narrowly endorsed Jones this weekend, finally recognizing that Gaul’s prejudicial behavior was a pattern.

The forum was a survey of many of the judicial candidates who voters will encounter on the ballot in November, though several did not attend (including Gaul). For each contested race, moderator Bibb invited the candidates to outline their experience and qualifications and then asked one or two questions about issues like bail reform, drug-related offenses, and the criminal justice system’s racial and socioeconomic biases.

(While the forum was nonpartisan, and the church has not endorsed individual candidates, it does endorse Issue 1, the drug treatment and rehabilitation initiative designed, among other things, to decrease incarceration.)

Before the questions for the candidates began, Bibb — the

NewsChannel 5 anchor who is also an active member of the South Euclid UCC congregation — invited the 50 to 60 gathered attendees to stand in an exercise. He then asked the women to sit down. Then the black people. Then all other minorities. Then anyone who didn’t own property. Those who remained, he said, were the only people eligible to vote in 1776, when the country was founded.

Only six were left standing (including this correspondent). Four of them were candidates.

Gaul, in a statement issued to NewsChannel 5 for a story on Serial’s coverage of him, said that in his 28 years of service on the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas, “there has not been one credible complaint of discrimination raised against [him] based on race, religion, or sexual orientation.” The statement is at odds with his own comments on the podcast, in which he acknowledges that he has been called, among other things, a racist, a bigot and a misogynist, and that he doesn’t care. He’s not on the bench, he insisted, to be politically correct.

Antonio Mason was a student and basketball player at Cuyahoga Community College when he was paralyzed from the chest down by a drunk driver. He was denied compensation because, when he was 16, he was convicted in juvenile court of drug trafficking.

AFTER HIS FATHER WAS murdered in Sarasota, Florida, in 2015, Anthony “Amp” Campbell was in shock. Not only had he lost his role model and supporter, he also worried about coming up with $10,000 to pay for the funeral and burial.

Campbell, an Alabama State University football coach, emptied most of his savings but still could not cover the whole cost. Sarasota police urged him to apply to Florida’s crime victim compensation fund for help. Every state has such a fund to reimburse people for the financial wallop that can come with being a victim.

The answer was no. His father, Johnnie Campbell, had been convicted of burglary in 1983 after a late-night break-in attempt at a local business, and Florida law is clear: People with certain types of felonies in their past cannot receive victim’s aid. It did not matter that the elder Campbell had changed in 30 years — the Sarasota City Commission called him a “prominent citizen” a month

after his death — or that his son had never committed a crime.

Florida is one of seven states that bar people with a criminal record from receiving victim compensation.

The laws are meant to keep limited funds from going to people who are deemed undeserving. But the rules have had a broader effect: An analysis of records in two of those states — Florida and Ohio — shows that the bans fall hardest on black victims and their families, like the Campbells.

“Nobody came and questioned or asked. It was just, ‘no,’” said Campbell, 43, who lives in Montgomery, Alabama. “I just felt like they turned their backs on us.”

Administrators of the funds do not set out to discriminate. They must follow state law directing who can receive compensation. But critics call the imbalance a littleknown consequence of a criminal justice system that is not race-blind.

Multiple studies show, for example, black people serve harsher sentences than white people for the same

crimes and are more often charged with drug offenses, even though they use and sell drugs at about the same rates as white people.

“People with money and power are treated differently in our justice system. They’re not policed the same way,” said David Singleton, a Cincinnati civil rights attorney and executive director of the Ohio Justice and Policy Center.

In Florida, the ban applies to anyone who has been convicted as an adult of one of a constellation of felonies, including burglary and aggravated assault. In that state, about 30 percent of people who listed their race when applying for victim compensation in 2015 and 2016 were black. But black applicants made up 61 percent of people denied aid for having a criminal record, according to the analysis by the Marshall Project and Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting, in conjunction with the USA Today Network.

The racial disparity was similar in Ohio, which denies compensation

to people not just convicted of a felony in the past 10 years but simply suspected of certain felonies, even if they were never found guilty or committed the crime as a juvenile.

In Ohio, 42 percent of victims who applied for reimbursement in 2016 and listed their race were black. But 61 percent of people turned down for having a record were black.

Some compensation funds struggle to cover costs, bolstering one argument in favor of limits: Money should be saved for the most worthy victims. But the funds in Florida and Ohio routinely close out the year with lots of leftover cash.

Florida ended 2017 with a balance of $12 million, and Ohio with $15 million.

Matthew Kanai, chief of the crime victim services division for the Ohio state attorney general, which administers that state’s compensation fund, said funds have to follow rules set by legislators.

general, declined to comment on that state’s ban other than to note that they, too, must comply with the law.

Victims and their families said the rigid policies make it seem like states are separating crime victims into two kinds of people: those who matter, and those who do not. Many said the rejection letters are written in cold and confusing legalese.

Andre Winston, 38, was fatally stabbed in July 2015 when he tried to protect a woman who was being threatened at an apartment complex in Fairborn, Ohio, prosecutors said.

Kenna Rodriguez, the mother of his fiancee and grandmother to his child, stepped in to pay for a funeral.

She took out payday loans and maxed out her credit cards to cover the $4,500 bill and then applied to the state victims’ compensation program for help.

But Winston had been convicted of possessing cocaine in 2008, so Rodriguez’s application was denied.

About a quarter of the 552 denials for having a criminal history in the Ohio analysis were families applying for help after a loved one’s murder. And in 74 percent of those homicides, the murder victim, like Winston, was black.

Rodriguez appealed to the Ohio Court of Claims. Her attorney argued the state should adopt a “good

Samaritan” exception for people like Winston, but she lost.

“He gave his life so someone else could live,” Rodriguez said. “And then they just say, ‘The dude was a felon, too bad.’”

*** Every year, hundreds of thousands of victims apply to state compensation funds, which in total paid out more than $348 million in 2016, the most recently available federal data. Court fees and fines support most fund budgets, with an additional chunk coming from the federal government. To get reimbursements — which are capped anywhere from $10,000 to nearly $200,000 — victims first must exhaust all other resources, such as insurance.

States set their own eligibility rules. Most deny reimbursement to victims who refuse to cooperate with law enforcement or who were committing a crime that contributed to their injury or death. States with bans — which also include Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Rhode Island and North Carolina — go one step further, scouring the victim’s past.

FEATURE didn’t start out that way. In Ohio, the changes were fueled by outrage over a reputed mobster.

John Nardi, an alleged associate of the Cleveland crime family, was killed by a car bomb in 1977, and his widow collected $50,000 in victim compensation. The backlash was fierce. Lawmakers unsuccessfully sued the attorney general to block the payment, and by 1982, the first version of Ohio’s felony restriction law sailed through the legislature.

Nardi had never been convicted of a crime, leading lawmakers to include an unusual provision: The ban would apply not just to people with convictions but also to people whose records show a “preponderance of evidence” that they may have committed a felony in cases involving violence or drug trafficking.

That standard means that even though juvenile records are technically not convictions, Ohio courts have ruled they still count as a strike against victims.

In 2014, Antonio Mason was a student and basketball player at

Ohio victims can get up to $50,000.

But Mason was disqualified because when he was 16, he was found guilty in juvenile court of drug trafficking. Drug trafficking is among the most common reasons people with criminal histories are denied aid in Ohio. The most common — 1 in 5 denials — is drug possession.

“They always say that your juvenile record is sealed, they can’t use it against you as an adult. And yet they still found a way,” Mason said.

Ohio also has ruled out people based on just an arrest or indictment, victims’ lawyers say.

“The fact that a prosecutor has looked at all the evidence and decided not to pursue a case, that doesn’t stop the attorney general from using that information to deny a victim’s claim. I think that’s very wrong,” said Matthew Shaughnessy, a former police officer and firefighter who now works as an attorney

specializing in victim compensation appeals. “It’s disheartening.”

After Nakesha Phillips, 31, was stabbed in Toledo, Ohio, in 2016, she missed months of work at her job with a window installation company.

Her request for reimbursement was denied because a year earlier she had been charged with a felony: assaulting a police officer who came to her house to investigate a noise complaint. The officer said she was scraped when Phillips shoved her into a screen door; Phillips said the officer pushed her and hit the door during the confrontation. The case was reduced to a misdemeanor, but the officer’s accusation was enough to disqualify Phillips.

“When they denied me like that, it was like being stabbed again,” she said.

*** The question of which crime victims deserve financial help has been raised since states first started setting up compensation programs in the 1960s and ’70s.

Until 1999, North Carolina denied claims involving women injured or killed by a live-in partner because cohabiting before marriage was a misdemeanor. Utah used to routinely deny claims from sexual assault

victims over a lack of evidence or refusal to cooperate with law enforcement. Now, the fund starts with the assumption that women are telling the truth, said Gary Scheller, the director of Utah’s Office for Victims of Crime.

Louisiana first started banning payouts to people with criminal histories in the mid-1990s, said Bob Wertz, who has overseen the state’s Crime Victim Reparations Board since 1986. “It was set up to assist true innocent victims of crime,” Wertz said. “Innocent meaning not just at that very moment, but what’s the history of that particular person.”

Louisiana’s 11-member board has the discretion to overlook a victim’s criminal record and award compensation, but that almost never happens, multiple board members conceded.

Having a criminal past is one of the most common reasons people are denied in Louisiana, and the families of young black murder victims bear the brunt.

Louisiana, whose fund is chronically short of money, does not track the race of its applicants. But a review of 91 victim claims that were denied solely because of a criminal history from 2015 through 2017

FEATURE showed that close to 80 percent were black crime victims or their families.

Most of the victims were men under 35 years old, and the vast majority of them had been murdered.

Louisiana’s ban used to apply to anyone who had been convicted of a felony or was under correctional supervision — including probation or parole — in the five years before becoming a victim. But last month, at the request of the board, that period was reduced to three years. The ban does not apply to claims from sexual assault victims.

“We just felt five years was maybe a little harsh, but we thought it was important to keep the rule in place,” said Gary “Stitch” Guillory, a police officer named to the board in 2017, one of several recent appointments that turned the board majority black.

“When you get arrested, you lose certain rights. And I think that should be one.”

Mississippi also reduced its restrictions in 2013, narrowing the review period from a lifetime to anyone under correctional supervision for a felony in the past five years. In

late August, Missouri ended its ban, which had denied compensation to anyone convicted of two felonies, at least one involving drugs or violence, over the previous decade.

But just to the south, in Arkansas, the Crime Victims Reparations Board voted last year against asking legislators to lift the state’s lifetime ban on people with certain felony convictions. The Rhode Island legislature has declined to take up a proposal that would make the state fund pay for any victim’s funeral, regardless of previous criminal record.

*** Kanai, of the Ohio state attorney general’s office, said that his office has tried to work with the legislature to widen eligibility. In recent years, the office eliminated a two-year statute of limitations for victims to file claims.

After years of considering other changes, Republican Attorney General Mike DeWine, who is running for governor, submitted a measure to the legislature last month that would expand the definition of victim, allow people with criminal histories to get help on behalf of a minor, and reduce the review period from a decade to five years. The analysis of Ohio’s denials found that the median time between

a felony conviction and becoming a victim was about four years.

His announcement came while this story was being reported. It took the Marshall Project almost a year and the intervention of a lawyer to obtain records from Ohio, which has faced some public criticism of its stringent rules.

In Florida, a measure was introduced last year to remove lowlevel burglary convictions from the list of disqualifying felonies. The bill went nowhere. Burglary was among the most common reasons Florida denied compensation to 1,069 people with criminal histories in 2015 and 2016.

Limiting the review period in Florida would likely bump up the number of people who could get help.

The median time between the year someone was convicted of a felony and when he or she became a victim was about 10 and a half years, the analysis showed. In nine cases, at least 40 years had passed.

For 65-year-old Broward County resident John Phelis, the time between those two events was close to half a century. Phelis almost died when his throat was slit by a roommate in 2015, but he was disqualified from receiving victim compensation because he stole beer off a truck in 1970, when he

was 17. Phelis said he has repeatedly tried and failed to get the conviction expunged.

The murder of Johnnie Campbell, who was fatally shot by a neighbor over a petty dispute, still pains his son. He said he is comforted by memories, including one from 1998, when Amp Campbell was a Michigan State University football standout. His NFL prospects ended when he was nearly paralyzed on the field during a game. His dad moved in with him for almost a year, helping him bathe and dress until he recovered.

“He was always there for all of his kids,” said Amp Campbell, who has four siblings.

For years, Johnnie Campbell lay in an unmarked grave because his son could still not afford the $4,000 headstone. A small flag was staked there in the interim, and several times it was swept away in bad weather.

The stone was finally placed on the gravesite in March, when Amp made the last payment.

Chagrin Documentary Film Festival Once again on MovieMaker Magazine’s list of “50 festivals worth the entry fee,” the annual Chagrin Documentary Film Festival kicks off today with a screening of Love, Gilda, the documentary movie about comedic actress Gilda Radner. It shows tonight at the Chagrin Valley Little Theatre; a red carpet reception begins at 6:30, and the movie screens at 7:15. Tickets are $20.

The festival runs through Sunday and will feature 89 films from 31 countries. Eighteen movies with local ties will be screened as well.

Cleveland Stories Dinner Party Cleveland Stories Dinner Party is a weekly series that pairs fine food with storytelling. Cuyahoga Valley National Park Concert Series Presented by the National Park Service and the Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Concert Series aims to celebrate the cultural legacy of the Cuyahoga Valley with a variety of folk and roots rock concerts at the Happy Days Lodge. Hoppy Hour The Cleveland Botanical Garden offers an educational take on beer tasting with its weekly Hoppy Hour, which comes ’round again today from 5:30 to 8:30. Project Zero The folks at the local running store Fleet Feet have teamed up with Platform Beer Co., Mizuno and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for Project Zero, a special fundraising event that takes place tonight at Platform. A special taproom release of Project Zero, a brut IPA, will be available all night.

Platform Beer Co. will donate $1 to the foundation for every Project Zero beer it sells tonight. Sous chef Dana Reale and Adam Lizak, executive chef from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, will prepare a small appetizer menu for purchase. All food proceeds will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

The event kicks off with a short 1-mile walk or 3-mile run that starts and ends at the brewery. Cleveland Jewish FilmFest Now in its 12th year, the Cleveland Jewish FilmFest aims to bring the best of international Jewish cinema to Cleveland. It features a mix of documentaries, features, comedies and shorts, and films will screen at five local theaters and venues. The fest kicks off tonight with a screening of The Last Suit at 7 at Shaker Square Cinemas.

The drama tells the story of an 88-year-old Holocaust survivor who travels across Europe to Poland as part of a promise to a friend who helped him escape. East Bank Bacon Festival The Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland aims to reduce hunger in Cleveland by providing nutritious food to over 45,000 residents each month, more than 31 percent of whom are children. Cuyahoga County’s largest direct emergency

food distribution network, the nonprofit serves 6.5 million meals per year as it allocates 94 percent of every dollar raised to buying food for those in need. Today, the Hunger Network hosts the second annual East Bank Bacon Festival, a fundraiser that takes place from noon to 10 p.m. on the East Bank of the Flats. Admission is free. The day will feature a “bacon-infused menu” catered by local restaurants and chefs. The food will be paired with craft beer, and there will be live music. All proceeds go to the Hunger Network. Speedbump Fest Jaclyn Wright, the organizer of the annual Speedbump Fest — a benefit that began as a memorial concert to friend Garrett Janos, a suicide victim — has said she would like to think of Speedbump Fest as “aimed at not only celebrating his life but also building trust and an openness to our community.” For the third annual rendition of the festival, which will again serve as a benefit for mental health, Wright has recruited the underground bands Mockingbird, Face Value, Fringe Candidate, the Repos, Nullum and Slut Bomb to perform. STAGE BURNING DOWN THE OLD BOYS’ CLUBHOUSE Male sexual privilege has been a refuge for the morally repugnant, as shown in Freak Storm

THERE’S A KNOCK ON THE door. The man inside doesn’t want to open it, because he knows it’s the end for him, and those like him. But the woman to whom he’s engaged has the courage to open the door. And then what happens is …

That’s how the play Freak Storm at None Too Fragile Theater concludes. But if you think it also serves as a spot-on metaphor for what’s happening to the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, you wouldn’t be accused of hallucinating.

This play, written in 2002 by Matt Pelfrey, is a darkly comical and shivering look inside the male psyche, built around a gang rape three men committed when they were younger. Turns out that woman, Jana, is not only a victim, she is either a real or spectral presence that the guys see following them wherever they go.

It’s a little amazing that this one-act play, scheduled months ago and directed by Sean Derry, opened a day after the riveting hearing about the alleged sexual assault of Catherine Blasey Ford

by Judge Kavanaugh when they both were in high school. The juxtaposition of these two events — one of immense national and even international significance, and the other happening at a tiny theater in Akron — speak to how art and culture can align in surprising and revealing ways.

Both the play and our current reality bring into sharp focus how insanely out-of-balance the power dynamics between men and women are. In Pelfrey’s incisive and shocking piece, two guys, Ian and Gil, are on the road to attend the wedding of their old pal Adam, who is marrying Lynn. But both the dudes in the car are visibly stressed by something. As Ian says, “This is all an attempt to scare us.”

We have no idea what he’s talking about until they arrive at the small crib where Adam and Lynn are playing kissy-face and attempting to get it on. But as Adam looks out the window, he sees a gaunt woman standing silently in the rain, staring at

the house. He ignores her as just another homeless woman, a person of no consequence.

But once his buddies arrive and they start interacting, the cracks start showing. Ian, played splendidly with bully-boy bravado

by Brian Kenneth Armour, has no problem putting the others in their place. Ian, an African-American, shuts up Gil with some “ghetto” put-downs, insults the masculinity of Adam, and attempts to silence Lynn when she objects to his

times, pulling uneasy laughs from the audience.

As Adam watches all this unfold in his living room, while keeping an eye out for the woman outside, he tries to keep his relationship with Lynn on course. James Rankin morphs nicely from a guy enjoying his last few hours of bachelorhood to a man pursued inexorably by his past. And Kelly Strand — the only woman who speaks since Madison Ellis as Jana simply stands and stares —

And that’s not surprising since he’s toting two large glass jars containing the evidence of the rape of Jana years before. And there is supposedly a third jar, one for each of the rapists. What’s in the jars? Well, let’s just say the contents are soaked in formaldehyde. Gregorio underplays his lines beautifully at

makes the most of her words as she fights against the flow of toxic testosterone around her.

In a way, it seems surprising that a play like this was written more than 15 years ago, long before the Kavanaugh-Ford drama was injected into our civic bloodstream.

But in another way it’s not surprising at all since the casual, pro forma, and often invisible sexual assault and abuse of women has been going on for eons. It only gets our attention when a woman of enormous courage such as Dr. Ford emerges to tell her story.

Or when a man, such as Ian in this play, attempts to eliminate the evidence by stuffing the contents of one of the jars down the garbage disposal.

Apparently, that’s what it takes to finally raise the awareness of what has been happening to women since time immemorial. Those small sexual digs and slights can eventually lead to verbal attacks and then, in some cases, physical assaults ending in rape and even murder. Yet many men — let’s call it a storm of freaks from priests to politicians and from esteemed athletic coaches to anonymous factory floor supervisors — seem offended that such behavior would even be commented on or reported, let alone punished. Such is the unassailable bastion of entitled, oblivious and condescending male privilege.

But we are in the middle of a week when that bastion is being challenged. Challenged by art such as Pelfrey’s incisive play and by women and their male allies who will not back down. There is a knock on the door; women are answering it.

And what must happen next is … change.

MOVIES A MOVIE STAR IS BORN Gaga, Cooper wow in remake of classic music industry love story

By Sam Allard LAST WEEK, LADY GAGA announced that “Shallow,” the hit single from the new film A Star is Born had been released on Spotify, and I’ve been listening to little else since. It’s a slow-burn duet, performed by both of the film’s stars, Bradley Cooper and Gaga, and in addition to being a powerhouse ballad, it’s also one of film’s best and most joyous moments.

Rockabilly star Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) has already met young Ally (Lady Gaga) at a gay bar after one of his concerts.

They go for drinks, and he is immediately smitten with her and her songwriting chops, though Ally admits she never sings her own songs because the music industry “loves how she sounds, but hates how she looks.” Though it takes some coaxing, Maine manages to get his driver to bring Ally, via private jet, to his gig the next night, and bring her backstage.

Ally can scarcely believe what’s happening to her. She’s standing in the wings when Maine walks over and tells her that he has arranged a song she’d sung pieces of the night before. He wants her to sing it. She protests.

“I’m singing it either way,” he says, and shrugs playfully.

But Maine’s aim is not to steal

Ally’s song; he wants to celebrate her talent, to showcase an artist who has moved him. (He’s an alcoholic who hasn’t found much joy in performing in some time.)

“Shallow” begins, and Cooper, who affects a gravelly twang in his dialogue, acquits himself admirably on the mic. Ally, in disbelief, psyches herself out and joins him on stage to perform her song, taking over the second verse and then the soaring chorus and bridge. (While you’ll have to suspend your disbelief with respect to the successful arrangement and the impromptu harmonies, it’s an incredible moment.) The film opens Friday in wide release and is an early buzzy favorite for this year’s award season.

The film, then, focuses on Ally’s rise and Maine’s decline. After touring with Maine and performing a solo encore that brings down the house, Ally gets noticed by a major producer and soon becomes a pop sensation. Maine descends further into alcoholism and, soon, musical irrelevance. Their love is complicated by what Maine perceives as Ally’s selling out, and

by Maine’s own boorish behavior under the influence of substances.

Punctuated by Lady Gaga’s showstopping vocals and by more

than one devastating scene of embarrassment brought on by drunkenness, the fi lm presents a uniquely complicated love story that also portrays celebrities as sympathetic human beings. The fi lm is a remake of a familiar story. Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand both played the Gaga role in earlier versions. It is also Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut. He received an Oscar nod for his turn as the mentally unstable protagonist in Silver Linings Playbook, and may nab another for his performance here,

as a man damaged and salvaged in other ways. His twang never stops sounding like a “voice,” but he is redeemed in his desperate adoration of Ally. Lady Gaga, rest assured, is just as magnetic on screen as she is on stage. One can’t help seeing Gaga herself in her character: a working-class girl beloved by outcasts with a voice as vast and mighty as the Pacific.

SPOTLIGHT: CLEVELAND JEWISH FILMFEST NOW IN ITS 12TH YEAR, THE Cleveland Jewish FilmFest aims to bring the best of international Jewish cinema to Cleveland. It features a mix of documentaries, features, comedies and shorts, and films will screen at five local theaters and venues.

The event kicks off on Thursday with a screening of The Last Suit at 7 p.m. at Shaker Square Cinemas. The drama tells the story of an 88-yearold Holocaust survivor who travels across Europe to Poland as part of a promise to a friend who helped him escape. A dessert reception takes place in the lobby after the screening.

Another highlight, the documentary Let’s Dance, shows how

modern dance has become one of Israel’s greatest cultural achievements.

It screens at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Cedar Lee Theatre.

At 10 a.m. on Sunday, the Cedar Lee Theatre hosts a screening of Sammy Davis Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me, a new documentary about the late singer and actor who converted to Judaism in 1954. A drama set in Paris in 1941, Bag of Marbles centers on two young Jewish brothers who try to escape persecution by fleeing to a demilitarized zone. It screens at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Cedar Lee Theatre.

A new documentary about the small group of Israelis and Palestinians who met secretly in Norway in 1992, The Oslo Diaries

screens at 1 p.m. on Monday at the Cedar Lee Theatre. Who Will Write Our History, a documentary about the Warsaw Ghetto, screens that same day at 7:30 p.m. at the Cedar Lee Theatre.

The Invisibles, a drama which shows at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Cedar Lee Theatre, centers on the 7,000 Jews who lived in Berlin in 1943 after Germany declared the city to be “free of Jews.”

As part of a “classic” series, the 1975 drama Hester Street, a “poignant recreation of Jewish life at the turn of the 20th century,” screens at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, at the Cedar Lee Theatre.

The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque hosts a screening of

the 2017 drama Promise at Dawn at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, and the Atlas Theatre shows the documentary Mossad: Imperfect Spies at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14.

The festival closes on Sunday, Oct. 14, with a screening of Heading Home: The Tale of Team Israel, a movie about how the Israeli team qualified for the 2017 World Baseball Classic. It screens at 7 p.m. at the Cedar Lee Theatre.

EAT THE SWEET STUFF Gonzalo and Lilliana Egozcue are the couple behind your favorite spoonfuls of gelato across Cleveland

IF YOU’VE SAVORED A POSTmeal swirl of gelato at your favorite neighborhood Italian restaurant, chances are good that it came from Gonzalo Egozcue’s petite Old Brooklyn commissary. After leaving this kitchen, the creamy concoctions work their way to the coolers at Vero in Cleveland Heights, Presti’s Bakery in Little Italy, Osteria di Valerio downtown, In Forno Pizza in Avon, and dozens more eateries scattered about in between.

These days, gelato is a commonplace treat. But when Egozcue first began making it in Cleveland, it was a rare curiosity often billed as “Italian ice cream,” a description that feels about as accurate as calling spaghetti “Italian ramen.” One of the first pioneers to introduce it locally was Valerio Iorio, owner of Valerio’s Ristorante in Little Italy. In 2002, he realized a professional dream when he opened La Gelateria in Cleveland Heights, one of the first gelaterias in the region if not the nation. When he went looking for a gelato master, Egozcue answered the call.

“My family had a gelato company in Uruguay,” says Egozcue, who started stirring batches in that country as young as 13. “It’s very, very big there; more than here.”

While a very small handful of Italian restaurants offered gelato at the time, almost all were purchasing pre-made products from importers or American-based food service wholesalers. At La Gelateria, each batch was made the old-fashioned way using quality ingredients like whole milk, sugar, fresh fruit and nuts. Despite the learning curve, the shop was an immediate success, prompting Iorio to open a second outpost at Legacy Village two years later.

When the shops closed in 2011, Egozcue moved his operation to Old Brooklyn, where he and his wife Lilliana focus on supplying wholesale accounts under the brand name GelatoStar (216-741-9766, gelatostar.com).

In the case of gelato, proximity

to the source is more important than it is with ice cream, Egozcue argues, because of the way it is made. Gelato has less fat, sugar and air than its American counterpart, all of which help extend the shelf life of conventional ice cream.

“Gelato is 50-percent lower in fat and has 20- to 50-percent less air whipped in,” he explains.

The result? A denser, creamier, silkier product bursting with flavors unimpeded by fat or excessively cold temperatures, as gelato is kept and served at slightly warmer temps than ice cream.

The proof is in every spoonful of Sicilian pistachio, tiramisu and stracciatella, where the intense, unadulterated flavors seem to burst into vivid life when they hit the tongue. In addition to the dairybased gelatos, GelatoStar produces fruity sorbetti, the water-based version of gelato made from fresh, seasonal fruits, fruit extracts and sugar. Unlike granita, which is often grainy in texture, sorbetto

has a velvety-smooth mouthfeel.

The rise of gelato shops here and away, even those that make their own products on site, is the result of large corporations like PreGel that sell everything a person needs to make it “from scratch.” The company stocks a full line of flavorings, stabilizers and shelf-stable bases that literally require nothing but water to bring them to life. Egozcue elects to continue doing it the way he learned from his father, using real ingredients, even though it is significantly more expensive to do so.

Last year, the Egozcues opened Molto Bene (18401 Detroit Ave., 216-273-7333), a casual Italian eatery in Lakewood. Initially, the aim was to use the restaurant as a vehicle to sell more gelato, as it tends to be a seasonal product.

“The summer’s too short and the year is too long, so now we are doing a restaurant,” Egozcue told me in advance of the opening.

Who could predict that the

attractive, 30-seat restaurant would become one of the buzziest little trattorias on the west side?

Since opening 14 months ago, Molto Bene has been packed with appreciative diners who have been gobbling up pizzas, pastas, entrees and, of course, gelato. A prominently displayed cooler offers 16 flavors for dine-in and takeaway enjoyment. Soon, a liquor license and patio will further enhance the experience.

At the same time, Egozcue continues to grow GelatoStar by adding new products to extend the brand’s portfolio. Confections like caramel semifreddo, readyto-serve spumoni and tartufos, attractive layered desserts, come in flavors like lemon cream, raspberry cheesecake and passion fruit.

Expect to start seeing them at your favorite neighborhood Italian restaurants.

WHILE COMBINING FOODS FROM Mexico, the Caribbean and even the Far East on a single menu might sound ill-advised, nobody can argue with the results.

Next month, Johnny Mango will celebrate its 22nd birthday, a milestone for any concern, but a downright outlier in the cutthroat restaurant business.

Since this quirky pie-shaped eatery opened in Ohio City, everything around it has changed, especially the neighborhood just outside its doors. In that time, restaurants too numerous to name have come and gone, but Johnny Mango keeps chugging along with nearly the identical menu of “healthy world food” that it introduced more than two decades ago.

“When we opened, we found out really quickly that the neighborhood was looking for a comfortable gathering placelike spot with real food that was a break from all the mundane franchise offerings that most places were serving,” explains owner Shelley Underwood. “And that’s what we gave them.”

In 1996, Underwood and former chef-partner Gary Richmond introduced people to Johnny Mango, a fictional epicurean who was way ahead of the curve when it came to global, and often meatless, cuisine. That flavorful food was dished up in a sunny, tropical dining room that borrowed design cues from an island beach bar. If the festive chow and atmosphere didn’t brighten your day, the fruity margaritas made with top-shelf tequilas surely would.

Johnny Mango has lasted this long thanks to consistency in staff, service and food, yes, but also an adoring local following that treats the place like a home away from home.

“We have the most loyal customers,” says Underwood. “It’s not unusual to see the same faces in here three to seven times a week.”

Almost without exception, those customers order the same dish

during every visit, whether it’s the black bean quesadilla, shrimp fried rice, pad Thai, Bangkok BBQ chicken or fiery Jamaican jerk chicken.

Over the years, Johnny Mango has served as an unofficial proving ground for chefs just setting out on their culinary journey.

Momocho’s Eric Williams, Melt’s Matt Fish and Salt’s Jill Vedaa all have made their way through this bustling kitchen.

JT Haynes started here as a dishwasher, working alongside some of those chefs. Today — and for the last decade and a half — he’s been the chef. It might seem monotonous to crank out a menu that was set in stone long before you ever picked up a spatula, but Haynes relishes the task.

“This is the kind of menu I thought never needed to change,” he explains. “It’s unique and it’s all I know. It feels good to be able to keep this going; staying consistent without getting complacent is hard work.”

Another longtime staffer is Mandy Kiczek, who happens to be Underwood’s sister. She’s been a part of this business since day one, when she was just 17 years old. On Monday, Oct. 1, she and Haynes became the proprietors of Johnny Mango, as Underwood cedes ownership of the operation.

“I’m simply ready for a change,” states Underwood. “I’m looking forward to new adventures, new challenges. And when you have these two fabulous people here willing and capable to take over, it makes the transition kind of meant to be.”

Not that she needs to, but Underwood assures customers that little will change going forward in terms of the day-to-day operation of her “baby.” And more importantly, she promises not to be a stranger.

“Ohio City is my favorite neighborhood,” she says, surprising nobody.

Chris Hillman dissects the Byrds’ groundbreaking 1968 album, Sweetheart of the Rodeo SINGER-BASSIST CHRIS HILLMAN, a third-generation native of California, launched his career back in the early 1960s with the bluegrass act the Scottsville Squirrel Barkers. He would then go on to found the Byrds, a truly innovative country-rock group that also featured singer-guitarist Roger McGuinn and the late singer-guitarist Gram Parsons.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the band’s influential album, Sweetheart of the Rodeo. To mark the occasion, Hillman and McGuinn have teamed up with Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives to play the album in its entirety. They perform at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the Akron Civic Theatre.

“The Byrds’ Sweetheart of the

Rodeo recording stands as a milestone in American music,” says Stuart in a press release announcing the tour.

For the tour, Stuart is playing the famous 1954 Fender Telecaster originally owned by country-rock pioneer Clarence White, a contributor to the recording.

“I bought my first copy of the record in 1972,” Stuart says. “Upon my first listen, I was mesmerized at the effect of the combined power that country music, rock ’n’ roll, bluegrass, gospel and folk music had on me.

From that day forward, I considered Sweetheart of the Rodeo a blueprint as to how I should live my musical life.

It is truly an honor for me and the Superlatives to get to go out and play music from Sweetheart with Roger

[McGuinn] and Chris [Hillman]. We love and greatly admire both of them, and I have to believe this is a show not to be missed.”

Reached via phone, Hillman echoes Stuart’s enthusiasm.

“It’s been such a blast and every night has gotten better,” he says.

“We’re having a great time, and the songs have taken on a whole new meaning 50 years later. We haven’t changed anything. It’s the same arrangements as when we recorded the songs in 1968, but the execution now is so much better, and we have Marty and His Fabulous Superlatives, which is one of the best bands I’ve ever been around or played with. They’re so good.”

The show features two segments.

The first segment includes songs that led up to Sweetheart of the Rodeo. The second segment features the album in its entirety. An encore will feature a few Byrds hits.

“We were doing country songs back in 1966,” says Hillman. “It was a clear-cut pathway to get to the point of going to Nashville in 1968 for Sweetheart of the Rodeo. The album didn’t even get reviewed positively when it came out. It was not the best-selling Byrds record at all. It was probably the worst-selling Byrds album, but it did become accepted. I do believe it was the first country-rock album, and it opened the floodgates.

We asked Hillman to talk about each of the disc’s tunes. Here’s what he had to say.

“That was written by Bob Buchanan and Gram Parsons. Gram gets a lot of the credit for it, which is okay, but Bob Buchanan is an old friend of mine, and he contributed to a lot the writing. It’s a beautiful song. It’s a classic. We do it in the show. I sing it and people just love it. There’s a great connection with people in that song.”

“You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere”

“One Hundred Years From Now”

“It’s just such a great song. Bob [Dylan] sent the demo out to us along with ‘Nothing Was Delivered,’ and we loved the song. It was a great song. It was the second time we were blessed with a great Dylan song. The other was ‘Mr. Tambourine Man.’ They were divine gifts. We had Lloyd Green kick it off with steel guitar.”

“We arranged and did it in the sense of a Byrds groove, so to speak.

Gram [Parsons] brought two great songs into the project: ‘Hickory Wind’ and ‘One Hundred Years from Now.’ Sweetheart is the only Byrds album that Roger [McGuinn] and I did not write songs for. I don’t know why but it just happened that way.”

“I Am a Pilgrim” “Merle Travis wrote that song, and I had heard it when [guitarist] Clarence [White] had played it as an instrumental in the Kentucky Colonels, a bluegrass band he had.

Clarence and I have known since we were 16 years old. Roger [McGuinn] and I just put a new arrangement to it.

I love it.”

“The Christian Life” “I’m pretty sure Ira Louvin wrote the song. It’s a great song approached with more depth and meaning now in our later years than when we first cut it.”

“You Don’t Miss Your Water” “William Bell was an R&B singer who recorded for Stax. He’s still active.

I heard Taj Mahal do this years ago, and then we cut it. It’s a great tune.”

“You’re Still on My Mind” “It’s a classic honky-tonk song.

George Jones had a hit with it. Gram [Parsons] sang it originally, but here we are doing it. It has worked out great in the set.”

“Pretty Boy Floyd” “Roger [McGuinn] brought that in.

It’s a great tune by Woody [Guthrie], who wrote such great story tunes. I love the lyrics and how well-crafted it is. I played mandolin on the original and Marty is doing it on stage, which is fine because Marty is such a great player. He has a great approach to mandolin on that song.”

“Blue Canadian Rockies” “I heard that song originally by a group from Canada when I was working on this country show, Cal’s Corral, when I was 18 years old. Canadian Sweethearts did it, and I heard it in a Gene Autry movie. It just stuck in my head. I remembered it when we started working on Sweetheart of the Rodeo and wanted to include it because it’s a sweet love song.

Cindy Walker wrote that, and she was a terrific prolific songwriter who’s now passed on.”

“Life in Prison” “We decided to do all the tunes from Sweetheart, and at first I didn’t think we should do ‘Life in Prison’ because it’s such a silly song. But we’ve been doing it, and Marty [Stuart] sings it, and he makes it sound so good. He’s such a good singer that he can make that song come alive.”

“Nothing Was Delivered” “I’m not sure what it’s about. I like the way Roger sings it. It has many sub-texts to it. I think Bob wrote this song and ‘You Ain’t Going Nowhere’ when he was laid up with a broken leg from his motorcycle accident. That’s how he came up with the songs.”

MUSIC FACING THE MUSIC AGAIN After a hiatus, singer-songwriter Jennifer Knapp embarks on a new journey

JENNIFER KNAPP WAS ONCE A beloved contemporary Christian music artist, with multiple Grammy nominations to her name. Her willingness to write songs about faith that faltered and was anything but perfect shone brightly against a backdrop of overly produced CCM schlock. But in 2004, she walked away from her career. Journeying through the wilds of Australia and her own mind, Knapp eventually resurfaced nearly seven years later. Her announcement of why she left sent shock waves through religious circles and beyond. It wasn’t just that she was tired and overworked and needed a break: She’s a lesbian.

These days, Knapp still writes songs full of honesty, but rather than singing exclusively about Jesus, she talks about everything the world has to offer.

“In my first career, behind the scenes, there was pressure to live a certain way,” Knapp recalls via phone from her Nashville home. She performs at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Musica in Akron. “[In making Christian music], I wasn’t interested in propaganda. I was always wanting to talk about the faith.

Back then, as an artist, I was willing to look at that. But at a certain point, it felt constrictive.

It was offensive to me to say that the experience that I have is the experience you should have.

That’s not to say that all people who write about their faith are engaged in propaganda. I’m still on the same journey; it’s just the language I use has changed.”

Knapp says she’s thrilled to get back on the road this fall, including her Thursday stop in Akron, playing songs from both Career 1.0 and Career 2.0, as she calls the two halves. This time she’ll be out on stage not just with her acoustic guitar but also with Louise, her electric guitar.

“How do I get inspired to play songs that are 20 years old?”

Knapp asks. “Part of that story is with my fan base. In the time I’ve struggled to go back to these, my fans have told me that

these songs have been pivotal to their lives. At the same time, I’ve been tired of playing it the same way. So changing up the instrumentation is key.”

Growing up in Kansas in a non-religious home, Knapp didn’t find God and the guitar until college. As detailed in her autobiography Facing the Music, she always knew that coming out would mean alienating some

the LGBTQ+ communities. In order to speak on the subject of religion even more intellectually, Knapp went back to school, just recently finishing up a Master of Theology degree at Vanderbilt University.

“It’s true; I’m a theologian now,” she says. “I think some people in my classes, knowing who I was, were surprised that I could actually read and write.

The Christian church itself is divided on the subject of homosexuality, with some denominations allowing openly gay pastors and others preferring parishioners and pastors alike remain steadfastly in the closet. That’s why Knapp founded the nonprofit Inside Out Faith in 2011 to open the dialogue between the faith and

The idea that I was capable of being intellectually engaged — I think some people were surprised that it was legitimate.”

Although she released her sixth album, Love Comes Back Around, last year, Knapp hasn’t been touring much of late thanks to school work. But with that done and the new tour about to unfold she says she can’t wait to live inside these

songs again. “It’s my deepest look at love yet,” she says of the album.

And here, plain and simple, you can see a maturation in her work. The classic alto croon is still there, but it’s now deepened.

Her guitar work, always bold and strong, is even more masterful. If you listen deeply enough, her faith still cascades through the lyrics, just not overtly so.

So who’s coming out to the shows to hear these songs?

Some fans are those who just like singer-songwriters, but she says there’s no doubt she has a core following.

“Standing the test of time are people who love music,” she says.

“Especially in Ohio, I’ve gotten to know people. It’s weird when I talk about my fans or audience; that’s too cold a term for the audience I do have. I will say 50 percent of my audience has been with me for 20 years. We don’t like to talk about it, but we’re getting older.”

Crystal Bowersox: An early bloomer, singer Crystal Bowersox started performing at age 10. She played at bars in the Toledo area, busked at train stations and hit the open mic circuit even though she only knew about 10 songs at the time. In 2010, she placed second on American Idol — not bad for someone who didn’t really feel compelled to compete and only auditioned at the request of friends who suggested she had the talent to do well on the program. Since American Idol, she has performed alongside acts such as Harry Connick Jr., Joe Cocker and Alanis Morrisette. The songs on Bowersox’s 2013 album, All That for This, run a wide gamut.

Tunes such as the harmonicaand-horn-driven “Home” possess a Blues Traveler vibe, and Bowersox’s supple voice — she sounds a lot like Jewel — packs a real punch.

Carbon Leaf/Freddy & Francine: If you went to college in the early ’90s, chances are you attended at least one keg party. Campus regulations were looser back then, and students took advantage.

Studying at Randolph-Macon College at the time, the guys in Carbon Leaf benefited from those conditions. They put together a cover band and regularly gigged at backyard parties and frat events. These days, the band is known for playing an eclectic mix of original music that draws from blues, folk and rock. The current tour supports its latest album, Gathering: Volume 1, a nice collection of traditional sounding ballads and mid-tempo tunes. The tour also celebrates the band’s 25th anniversary. By Jeff Niesel MEET THE BAND: Jonathan Capeci (vocals) and Joey Beretta (guitarist) THE PHILLY SOUND: When growing up outside of Philadelphia, Nightly singer Jonathan Capeci listened to modern rock radio and got a good dose of bands such as the Police, U2 and the Killers. “Those are the three main bands we love,” he says. “We’ve grown up with that kind of music, and that’s our favorite music.” Capeci and Beretta grew up together and played together in a couple of bands that had performed on Warped Tour.

By Dan Savage Is it even possible for a couple that stopped having sex to start back up again? My girlfriend and I (we’re both women) have been together for four years, and we haven’t had sex for two. I thought the sex was good, but apparently she was going through the motions. She’s a sex worker, and it took her a while to figure out she was not being present, and she wanted to stop having sex with me until she could figure out how to change that.

I get that and respect it. We have an open relationship, so I started having more sex with other people. And while it’s fun, I do find myself wishing I could have sex with someone I actually care about — and I only care about her. She says she wants to start having sex with me again, but we don’t really know how to do that. Everything is kind of terrifying and awkward. I love her more than I knew I could love a person, and if we never do figure out how to have sex together, I’ll still stay with her. But for two people who are both highly sexual and want to have sex with each other, we sure are perplexed at how to make this work.

— Sex Or Romance Dilemma “Let’s cut to the chase: Yes, it is possible for a couple that has stopped having sex to start having it again,” said Dr. Lori Brotto, a clinical psychologist and a sex researcher at the University of British Columbia.

You ended on a note of despair, SORD, but Brotto sees two good reasons for hope: You and your girlfriend are completely open and honest with each other, and you’re committed to staying together whether or not the sex resumes. Your communication skills and that rocksolid commitment are the bedrock on which you can rebuild your sex life.

“There are two aspects of SORD’s question that jump out at me: One, the reference to wanting to be present for sex, and two, the description of the situation as terrifying and awkward,” said Brotto. “SORD’s girlfriend likely perfected the practice of ‘going elsewhere’ during sex while at work, which meant that it became almost automatic for her.

This is classic mindlessness, and it is why mindfulness — the state of full awareness to the present moment in a kind and compassionate way

— may be a tool for her to consider implementing.”

Mindfulness is the subject of Brotto’s new book, Better Sex Through Mindfulness: How Women Can Cultivate Desire.

“The practice is simple,” said Brotto. “It involves deliberately paying attention to sensations, sounds, and thoughts in the present moment — and noticing when the mind gets pulled elsewhere and then gently but firmly guiding it back. Mindfulness is also about not berating yourself for finding it challenging or judging yourself for the thoughts you have.”

In her practice, Dr. Brotto has seen research subjects successfully use mindfulness to cultivate and/ or reignite sexual desire and relieve the awkwardness and fear that some people experience with sex.

“The uncertainty surrounding what will happen when they try to reintegrate sex can be terrifying for some couples,” said Brotto. “What if it doesn’t work? What if neither of them has desire? What if the sex is just plain bad? If SORD and her partner are worrying about the anticipated sex, that can make it damn near impossible to remain in the present.

The good news is that mindfulness can help with the tendency to get lost on the thought train.”

So here’s what you’re going to do, SORD: Order a copy of Dr. Brotto’s new book and read it with your girlfriend. And while you wait for the book to arrive, you’re going to try a mindful touching exercise called “sensate focus.”

“She will invite her girlfriend to touch her from head to toe, minus the genitals, for 15 minutes — without the goal of triggering arousal or desire,” said Brotto. “SORD’s role is to pay attention to the sensations emerging, and curtail any thoughts by redirecting attention to the here and now. After 15 minutes, they switch roles so SORD becomes the giver and her girlfriend is the receiver. This is not foreplay. It is not manual sexual stimulation. It is a mindfulness exercise designed to teach a person to remain in the present while receiving sensual touch.”
