THURSDAY AFTERNOON, MAYOR Frank Jackson joined County Executive Armond Budish to announce that Cleveland had submitted its bid to land the tech giant Amazon’s second headquarters — the so-called “HQ2.” Cleveland joined more than 100 other cities across the country in efforts to lure or beg for what could be an investment of $5 billion and 50,000 high-paying jobs.

Budish, in keeping with custom, was “very excited” about the bid. He said that more than 20 organizations and 90 individuals had worked days, nights and even weekends over the past several weeks to assemble the package. We know the bid was submitted by TeamNEO and the Greater Cleveland Partnership on behalf of the public entities, but that’s all we know.

The bid itself, for undisclosed reasons, remains “proprietary,” meaning no specifics have been revealed. Neither the proposed location(s) for the Amazon site nor the financial incentives attached, nor even the ways that Cleveland chose to promote itself, were shared with the media. Reporters were left to convey the excitement itself or else to complain about the lack of details.

Though Frank Jackson remained subdued as ever during the press conference, Budish’s exultations — “I truly believe that this is the best location for Amazon in the country” — were unaccompanied by evidence.

Other cities, like Detroit, released their bids with splashy videos and literature. Some cities elected not to reveal key details, like the proposed site location, but nevertheless sketched out the central points of their bids. Denver highlighted the talent and education of its workforce, for example. Other cities, like Columbus, did not actively promote their bids, but provided the information when local media

submitted public records requests.

In Boston, information from the bid led to a report that transportation accessibility and commute times had been generously overstated.

In Cleveland, we have nothing, and the city refuses to say why.

Frank Jackson told Channel 5 that the information would be provided “in a few weeks,” but with no explanation for the delay. The bid exists, we have to assume — it was submitted last week — so what’s the hold-up? As we noted Friday, if officials are so excited about the bid, why not share what’s so exciting?

When Scene requested clarification from the city — what made the information in question “proprietary,” we asked — we received a public records tracking number. Given the city’s notorious hostility toward transparency and public records, the tracking number may as well have been a honking middle finger.

The Plain Dealer interviewed Mayor Frank Jackson and Councilman Zack Reed last week in preparation for a mayoral endorsement, and they pressed Jackson on this issue.

mentioned that their lawyers were currently negotiating with the city’s law department over public records and that a significant lawsuit may be forthcoming.

“We’ve been around a long time,” said Quinn, “and there’s nobody who has had a worse record with public records… This has been a big problem. The media does not have the money to launch what would be an expensive lawsuit.”

Jackson responded, “Whatever you’re entitled to is what you should have.”

MAYORAL DEBATE AND CAMPAIGN ROUNDUP Last Thursday, two days after the PD endorsement interview, Jackson and Reed took their best shots in what Jackson has made certain will be the only public mayoral debate before the Nov. 7 general election.

Both men presented themselves as the man with the plan and their opponent as “all talk.”

Indeed, “conversation” and “dialogue,” which are generally regarded as signs of responsive leadership, were Thursday decried as the enemies of action. Jackson several times accused Reed of doing little but talk about issues.

He repeated a version of the “what have you done” speech with which he closed the primary debate in August, and reiterated something he told Reed at the PD interview: Sooner or later, Reed would have to do something.

But Reed leveled similar charges at Jackson. He said it was the mayor who was all talk, while he was the candidate who would reverse the decline of the past 12 years. “He talked about the future,” Reed said in a closing statement, “but he didn’t lay out what he was going to do.”

These back-and-forths were at times virtually indistinguishable from bad absurdist theatre, though the debate was not without substance. Moderator Rick Jackson, from Ideastream, and a panel of local journalists — WKYC’s Russ Mitchell, Ideastream’s Amy Eddings, and Cleveland.com’s Chris Quinn — presented a series of incisive questions that forced the candidates into uncomfortable admissions and tense responses.

In what was far and away Reed’s weakest moment, Russ Mitchell asked him about the five police officers who’d taken part in the shooting of Timothy Russell and Malissa Willliams, (in the infamous #137shots incident), who were reinstated on the Cleveland Police force. How did Reed feel about this news, Mitchell asked him, and prefaced the question with Samaria Rice’s request that Reed disavow the endorsement of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association.

UPFRONT Reed said. “It doesn’t matter what I think about it. I have to follow what was laid out [in the Constitution and the City Charter].�

When Mitchell doubled down, Reed dodged again — “I may not agree with it,� he said. But in light of the CPPA endorsement, the answer came off as a direct appeal to the police and incredibly weak-willed.

Jackson scored big points when, a moment later, he characterized the answer as a pattern of Reed’s: “You change how you feel depending on which way the wind is blowing politically,� Jackson told his challenger.

Jackson, however, had plenty of weak moments himself. Multiple times, he accused Reed (and his former primary challengers) of not owning up to mistakes. He accused Reed of attacking him, though wouldn’t acknowledge a recent campaign attack of his own.

When he mailed out literature highlighting Reed’s three DUIs, Jackson said, it “wasn’t about the councilman’s drinking and driving.�

It was merely to show an error in judgement, and to highlight Reed’s preternatural unwillingness to accept responsibility, he said. (That’s an awfully convenient spin on a negative campaign ad.)

Jackson also said that the other candidates, and certainly Reed, couldn’t admit when they make mistakes. Jackson then proceeded to give himself a C+ on the Cleveland Schools, to totally mischaracterize the debate over Public Square and to qualify the city’s population loss as “population gain in certain areas.�

In a question about policecommunity reconciliation, Reed talked about being open and transparent, and received a phone call during his answer. “Right on time,� said Jackson.

The moment turned out to be a strong one for both candidates. For Reed, it highlighted his accessibility.

He said he has given out his cell phone number on the campaign trail, and lo and behold, here was an example. Reed said, further, that he would hold ofďŹ ce hours at City Hall every Saturday so that anybody in the community could come speak to the mayor one-on-one.

It was a strong moment for Jackson, also, because he laughed. It was frankly a delight to see Jackson amused by an amusing moment.

and vitriol, and Jackson is always so dour and sleepy anyway, that it was refreshing to see him smile. —Allard

CSU STUDENTS CALL FOR PRESIDENT’S OUSTER AMID HATE SPEECH INCIDENT CSU students and community members decried the administration’s response to an anti-LGBTQ poster that appeared on campus last week.

During the rally and subsequent march to President Ron Berkman’s ofďŹ ce, students repeatedly insisted that the minority populations at CSU feel less safe than they had earlier this month. They expressed concern that university leadership was looking the other way under what many viewed as a legal guise. “The law should not be and cannot be our moral compass,â€? event organizer Molly Stachnik said. “Regardless of whether or not this

She was referring to Berkman’s rather opaque invocation of Brandenburg v. Ohio, which presents public agencies with a responsibility to protect speech that doesn’t directly incite or produce “imminent lawless action.” In a public statement on the poster, Berkman had written, “CSU also is committed to upholding the First Amendment, even with regard to controversial issues where opinion is divided.”

About 200 people gathered in the main courtyard off of Euclid Avenue to hear Stachnik and another 20 or so students speak. Most of the comments were aimed at Berkman’s statements; “When I read the second email, it broke my heart,” one student said.

While there was a brief reference to demands for more all-gender restrooms (and a crackdown on vandalism thereof), the general plea among students was for a more nuanced and sensitive conversation around hate speech and what the university can do to ensure students’ safety. One student suggested that the university should craft more specific speech policies that go above and beyond state law — much like CSU and other schools regulate

possession of weapons in a different way than the state might.

Students also urged their classmates to tune in and join the conversation — even if they themselves haven’t felt threatened by the poster.

“It’s pretty scary,” one transgender woman told the crowd.

“A lot of us are scared. I’ve heard a lot worse than what was on that poster.” She pointed out that many people were simply walking by the rally, and said that a lot of students don’t have the opportunity to ignore this situation.

A smaller group of students marched to Berkman’s office, though he was not available to meet. An office spokesman did, however, promise more formal conversations in the future to augment campus protests — “which we support,” he said.

Berkman addressed students during a forum last Wednesday.

Throughout that conversation, Berkman repeatedly folded back into the Brandenburg argument — that his institution’s hands are tied, though he would like to maintain the spotlight on this discussion in future public settings.

At one point a student asked him point-blank if he supported white

supremacy. While being interrupted multiple times by the student audience, Berkman assiduously denied any and all support of white supremacy. —Eric Sandy

BETTY SUTTON’S CAMPAIGN FOR GOVERNOR ATTRACTS HEAVY-HITTER ENDORSEMENTS In our early-campaign coverage of the Ohio governor’s race, we turn to former U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton, who has attracted the attention of labor organizations and state politicians from Cleveland to Cincinnati. Last week, she added U.S. Rep. Marcia Fudge to her endorsements.

The two women stood before the script “Cleveland” sign at Voinovich Bicentennial Park to announce the deepening of a partnership between Sutton’s campaign and her friend in Washington. The partnership, they agreed, would be a boon to Ohio voters as the 2018 Democratic primary looms.

“We have to be very, very serious about who we elect to public office,” Fudge said, alluding to the results of last year’s presidential election.

It’s a powerhouse endorsement seven months out from the May 7 primary election, which will pit Sutton against Democratic

challengers Nan Whaley, Connie Pillich and Joe Schiavoni. (Richard Cordray, Dennis Kucinich and Jerry Springer, all Democrats, have teased the possibility of running, as well.)

For Sutton, the Fudge endorsement solidifies a through-line from Columbus to Washington.

“We are going to have a partner who understands that this needs to be a state with an economy that works for everyone,” Sutton said.

She said she intends to organize a Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, a move that would return the state government’s workforce relations to the public sphere. (Gov. John Kasich has spent his two terms touting the private nonprofit corporation JobsOhio, which has been largely exempt from public scrutiny.)

And with Washington bookending one side of the state’s partnerships, Sutton’s gaze is fixed on local communities too. “We have to stop cutting all of our local government funds and pushing the crisis down onto our communities.” — Sandy

To make matters worse, Phyllis Cleveland faced a stiff challenge in her September primary race, against the Boys and Girls Club’s Richard Starr. The possibility of only one woman on a body that is meant to represent a city of 385,000 loomed.

The history of women on Cleveland City Council is distinguished, though sadly limited.

Only 38 women have ever held the office. In January 1924, Helen Green and Marie Wing were appointed as the first two women on the body.

They each served single four-year terms.

The 1950s witnessed the long council tenures of Margaret McCaffery; Jean Murell Capers, the first African-American woman to serve; and Mercedes Cotner. In the ’70s, there were powerhouse political names like Mary Rose Oakar and Mary Zone, the mother of current councilman Matt Zone. She assumed the west side seat of her husband Michael after his death in 1974 and stayed on through 1981. In the ’80s and ’90s, there was Fannie Lewis, of course, and Helen Knipe Smith and Odelia Robinson.

But female representation has declined precipitously during Frank Jackson’s tenure as mayor. Or perhaps it has merely returned to its typical low. Jackson’s swearing-in, in 2006, coincided with a high-water mark: Women then occupied six of the 21 total council seats, nearly 30 percent. We need not belabor the point, though we will, that “nearly 30 percent” is a disgraceful “highwater mark.”

Nina Turner and Phyllis Cleveland were both serving their first terms. They joined Dona Brady, who’d been on council since her appointment in 1999; Sabra Pierce Scott, who had defeated Bill Patmon in 2002 with the aid of former mayor Michael White; Patricia Britt, who first took office in 1995; and Fannie Lewis, who’d been serving faithfully and vocally since 1980.

But by the end of 2008, Nina Turner had gone to the statehouse, to be replaced by Terrell Pruitt.

Fannie Lewis had passed away, to be replaced, via special election, by T.J. Dow. When Sabra Pierce Scott abruptly departed in 2008, she appointed Shari Cloud to replace her, but Cloud only served eight months before she lost to Jeff Johnson.

Patricia Britt also tapped a woman to

replace her when she became council clerk: Mamie Mitchell.

On Nov. 7, voters in seven of Cleveland’s wards will see a female candidate on the ballot for City Council. Dona Brady and Phyllis Cleveland will seek re-election, and five challengers will take on powerful incumbents. Scene spoke with all challengers but Shalira Taylor, in Ward 12, who did not respond to multiple attempts to contact her.

To our great disappointment, neither Phyllis Cleveland nor Dona Brady wanted to be involved in this coverage either. In fact, neither responded to our direct inquiries at all. They were made aware that we wanted to highlight the candidacies of all female council candidates. But only through a council spokesperson were we informed that neither would participate, for “differing reasons.”

Here, then, are four of the female council challengers, taking on the man.

GAIL SPARKS - WARD 4 Gail Sparks, 54, is going up against the city’s longest tenured councilman, Ken Johnson, in Ward 4. Johnson is a pony-tailed leisuresuit aficionado who first took office in 1980, the same year as Cleveland’s longest-serving councilwoman, Fannie Lewis.

Shockingly, since Lewis’s first term, only nine other councilwomen have served on the body, two of whom (Emily Lipovan, in 2005, and Shari Cloud, in 2008) were appointees who served less than a calendar year.

Sparks wants to increase that number. But more importantly, she wants Ken Johnson gone. She has been incensed over the incumbent’s strong-arm campaign tactics. He sent mailers to residents before the primaries advising them that only he would be able to maintain critical funding for infrastructure and continue beloved programs for senior citizens.

“My opponents WILL NOT be able to continue any of our unique senior programs regardless of what they have told you,” Johnson wrote. “My ward 4 programs are almost totally run by Councilman Johnson’s volunteers.

These dedicated residents have volunteered for me for many years. When I leave office—By Law—all of our unique Ward 4 programs (mowing grass and snow removal for both seniors and the disabled, holiday gift cards,

and etc.) must end.�

It was an outrageous statement — by law, these programs must end? — and Sparks said that Johnson was exploiting seniors and “holding them captive,� and

Gail Sparks that he ought to be reported to the ethics commission. More recently, a PAC calling itself the the Friends of Good Government Against Fake Politicians put out

a mailer with lies about Sparks. The return address was fraudulently listed as Sparks’ own campaign ofďŹ ce.

For her part, Sparks told Scene, politics has been in her blood for decades. She joked that she ran for class president at Corlett Elementary in the 1970s. Her mother was a precinct committeeperson and her parents were both active in the street club. Sparks is a lifelong Clevelander, “a native Buckeye,� and an ’81 alum of John Adams High.

She now lives “a stone’s throw from Zelma George� off MLK.

Sparks has worked in the County Department of Health and Human Services and, more recently, as an entrepreneur. She has a small business on Larchmere that sells apparel and accessories.

Additionally, she and her husband own property, she said, and rent to low-income tenants.

She said that the biggest issues in Ward 4 are also probably the most visible. “It’s the same story. I’ve connected with almost 2,500 people and it’s the same story echoing,� she said. “It’s the jobs and the transportation and the dilapidated housing.�

She said Ken Johnson has been disconnected from his constituents for years, and that residents no longer feel that they have ears or eyes at City Hall. “I think he’s been taking our

votes for granted and I think he needs to retire,� she said. “He has no new ideas, no innovation, no creation. We have no ward meetings. We are disconnected. We have no way to bring grievances to his attention. And money is being misspent.�

Sparks said Johnson seems to be preoccupied with spending money on a waterpark at the rec center which bears his name. How can you spend millions on enclosing a water park, Sparks wanted to know, with all the battered homes and the limited access to jobs?

When asked about her own policy priorities, she responded immediately. “Job training programs and housing rehabilitation,â€? she said, adding that it will be necessary to re-establish ward meetings to get feedback from residents about what types of speciďŹ c programs they’d like to see. She also said that 23 percent of her ward does not have access to a car, and that transportation funding and policy need to be aggressively pursued.

FEATURE trail. She said that residents are often so disenfranchised it’s been a challenge just to help them understand that they deserve fair representation, “that they can make their councilperson accountable and transparent.”

And she said, from her point of view, that while women are a dominant force, particularly in the black community, communities need be represented fairly before leaders should be celebrated.

“Phyllis Cleveland is the only woman of color on city council,” Sparks said, “and she’s not representing us at all.” Sparks said she suspected Phyllis Cleveland was under Council President Kevin Kelley’s thumb, and cited her support of the dirt bike track, the Q Deal, and her opposition to a minimum wage increase as prime examples. Sparks said she sees herself differently.

“I’d follow in the footsteps of Zack [Reed] and Jeff [Johnson],” she said, and added that she wouldn’t be afraid to represent her residents, even if it meant voting against council leadership. “I see myself as a cross between Maxine Waters and Fannie Lewis.”

conceived as a direct rebuke to a sitting incumbent. Burk, 54, admitted that she hadn’t prepared “a stump speech” and had only

general ideas for improving her Old Brooklyn ward, where she’s lived for four years. But she is animated in her distaste for her current representative, City Council President Kevin Kelley.

“Our councilman has stopped us from voting twice this year,” Burk told Scene, when asked why she decided to run. (She was referencing the squashed minimum wage ballot initiative and the Q deal referendum.)

“I realized that local politics are so important. They affect our day-to-day even more than the upper echelons.”

I figured we need somebody who’s going to represent the people, and not whatever interests he has in his ear.”

Burk grew up in Willoughby, but has lived in Cleveland for 30 years.

She now works in the accounting department at the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities and is an active member of her union, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1199. Burk said that she got involved in union activities almost as soon as she started working at the county, and that in doing so she experienced a kind of political awakening.

“I realized that local politics are so important,” she said.

“They affect our day-to-day even more than the upper echelons.”

Other than candidate Alex Karrfault, who is challenging Matt Zone in Ward 15, Burk is the only candidate who is also an active member of SEIU, which has become a political force in town. Burk is in fact an executive board member, and her political platform hews closely to the priorities of that organization. She said she wants to “better people’s lives” and spoke ardently about the Q Deal and the $15 minimum wage issue. On both

of those critical issues, in her view, Kevin Kelley was on the wrong side.

“In my Plain Dealer [endorsement] interview, they said I got my facts wrong about the minimum wage, but I think they just disagreed,” she said.

(She added that she’s been so bothered by the Plain Dealer’s coverage that after she advanced in the primary, beating third-place finisher Rocco Crisafi by only seven votes, she didn’t return a message when the paper called to see if she had anything to add.)

In Ward 13, Burk said the most important task for a councilperson is being open and responsive to residents. On specific issues, she said that the opioid problem is getting more prevalent in Old Brooklyn, but that she doesn’t think pursuing legislation is the best way to combat it.

“I don’t think we can legislate against addiction,” she said. “It’s got to be more grassroots.” (Burk worked at a local methodone clinic in the past, she said, and has seen the ravages of opioid addiction firsthand.)

Ward 13 isn’t home to as many abandoned houses as other wards, Burk said, but it is home to old houses, full of lead-based paint. She said she wants to make sure lead legislation is executed. “And I don’t think the burden should be put on homeowners.

I think the burden should be put on the paint companies.”

On council, Burk said she sees herself as a vocal dissident. And like most other challengers, she has been angered by council’s rubber-stamp mentality. She also agreed that the number of women serving on council was far too low.

“There’s another woman running, Gail Sparks,” said Burk. “I’d love to be able to work with her.”

JASMIN SANTANA - WARD 14 Jasmin Santana, 38, is taking on incumbent Brian Cummins in Ward 14. The race has become one of the city’s tightest and most contentious — Santana was one of only two non-incumbents to win a ward primary in September. And the two campaigns, with their complex webs of support, haven’t been shy about attack and subversion. In its endorsement of Cummins, the Plain Dealer aptly dubbed the race a “stew of distemper.”

Cummins was elected to council in 2005, one of a minority who attained his position via election, not appointment. But Santana told Scene that after more than a decade with Cummins, “it’s time for some Latino representation in the city’s highestconcentrated Latino area.

“As women, we’re natural nurturers. And we’re able to switch hats,” she said. “I’ve mastered changing my hats within one day: the mom hat, the wife hat, the community hat. All these hats shift quickly. That type of experience, and being goaloriented — all of these things that you just grow up with as a woman — are valuable when you bring them to the table at City Hall. I’m going in there with fresh eyes, and I know that women want to be healthy and they want to feel safe.”

ELLEN CLEARY - WARD 16 Ellen Cleary, 30, is a St. Joseph Academy alumna with deep ties to the west side. She’s taking on incumbent Brian Kazy, who was appointed to his seat by departing Council President Martin Sweeney in 2014. Cleary told Scene she couldn’t sit by and watch him get re-elected without a fight.

“In my mind, it’s not a democracy if you just get to waltz right in,” she said.

While this is her first time running for office, Cleary has worked in or adjacent to politics for many years. In high school, she volunteered at Dennis Kucinich’s Lakewood office. In college, she worked for a Green Party Senate candidate in Illinois.

She graduated from Loyola Chicago in 2010 and thereafter worked in San Francisco, managing a real estate firm worth $850 million. She returned to Cleveland to work on the Uptown Project — “my baby,” she calls it — where she coordinated with public and private partners and gained experience in urban planning and economic development.

“I was surprised, though,” she said, “by the lack of engagement by the city councilpeople.”

That lack of engagement, Cleary argued, has resulted in declining quality of life for residents in Cleveland’s neighborhoods on the east and west sides. | clevescene.com | October 25 - 31, 2017

“I was away from Cleveland during the recession,� she said. “And I was really shocked, when I came back, by the progress downtown and the obvious regression in areas like West Park, Bellaire-Puritas and Jefferson. Crime, poor infrastructure and vacant storefronts are now abundant in what were once very stable neighborhoods.�

Cleary grew up in West Park.

Her mom has been school teacher for 20-plus years at CMSD’s GarďŹ eld Elementary, where Cleary started a youth arts camp for students when arts funding was slashed. Cleary’s mom also started the neighborhood community garden, and Cleary proudly still maintains a plot. These days, she works at Case Western Reserve University as the Assistant Director of Housing.

While she has no personal beef with councilman Brian Kazy, Cleary said she worries that because he was appointed to his seat, he is beholden to council leadership. “He can’t be his own independent person,� she said. “He’s voted with everyone else 98 percent of the time.

Cleary is a member of the Cuyahoga County Progressive Caucus and is endorsed by that group as well as the Cleveland Action Democrats. But she said she did not run at the behest or suggestion of any group. She decided to run on her own and is, at least for

Cleary said that creating an adequately trained, not to mention healthy, workforce is good for businesses like PPG and good for Cleveland. Cleary said sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also interested in environmental legislation, lakefront development and the pursuit of national businesses in the innovation economy.

If elected, Cleary would join Ward 3â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Kerry McCormack as the only other millennial on council.

And like the other female challengers taking on male incumbents, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s aware of the vast discrepancy in Clevelandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legislative body. So, too, are some of the voters in Ward 16. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve run into a lot of women who have said they will vote for me speciďŹ cally because Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a woman,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had other people who say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Tell your dad he should do X or Y.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; They assume Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not the candidate. Cleveland Stories Dinner Party Cleveland Stories Dinner Party is a weekly series that pairs fine food with storytelling. Through it, the folks at Music Box Supper Club hope to raise awareness of the mission of the Western Reserve Historical Society’s new Cleveland History Center. The goal of the Cleveland Stories Dinner Party is to “bring to life some of the fun, interesting stories about Cleveland’s past — from sports, to rock ‘n’ roll, to Millionaires’ Row,” as it’s put in a press release. Your dream has come true in the funny, touching and entirely charming musical Waitress, based on the film written by Adrienne Shelly and now beginning its national tour at Playhouse Square. In it Jenna, a waitress at the unambiguously titled Joe’s Pie Diner, makes glorious pies for the joint before her shift begins. And she gives these pies unique names reflecting her emotional state at the time.

Those emotions cover a lot of ground because Jenna is married to Earl (nasty Nick Bailey), a coarse oaf who steals her tip money while hacking away at her self-esteem. But once she discovers she’s pregnant, she meets a cute-quirky gynecologist, Dr. Pomatter, and starts to look for other life options with the help of her waitress pals Dawn and Becky.

Jenna’s pie name for this moment?

“The ‘I Wanna Play Doctor with My Gynecologist Chocolate Mousse’ Pie.” This is more than just a fluffy meringue of a story, and it no doubt has some added heft since all the creators are women. That is a first for a Broadway show, which is a fact both heartening (you go, girls!) and a bit depressing (the first time ever?

Really?). With music and lyrics by Sara Bareilles, book by Jessie Nelson and choreography by Lorin Latarro, the show glories in its female-centric point of view.

That perspective adds much to the proceedings in both humorous and dramatic moments. It’s hard to imagine a man writing a better scene when, early in the show, Jenna uses a pregnancy test stick at work to find out whether her episodes of nausea are caused by, uh-oh, a bun in the oven.

That hilarious scene, which features the song “The Negative,” is studded with specific references as Jenna, Dawn and Becky sing and pray for a postive (meaning negative) result. As

you might imagine, Jenna’s pie at this time is called “The ‘Betrayed by My Eggs’ Pie.” Near the end of the show, the song “She Used to Be Mine” perfectly reflects a woman’s mindset as Jenna delivers a powerful ode to the conflicting feelings most women carry around with themselves all the time.

It begins with “It’s not simple to say/ That most days I don’t recognize me” and is filled with revealing lines that as she remembers the girl she once was, and how she became who she is:

brings to the role of Jenna a bracing, no-nonsense attitude that allows for plenty of vulnerability. And she is well supported by her posse of other waitresses. Lenne Klingaman as the somewhat scattered Dawn explodes now and then in fits of excitement or pique, and she will make you laugh out loud. That laughter only increases after she meets endearing Ogie, who mirrors Dawn’s eccentric hobbies (they are both Revolutionary War re-enactors). As Ogie, Jeremy Morse brings down the house with

“Sometimes life just slips in through a back door/And carves out a person and makes you believe it’s all true/And now I’ve got you/And you’re not what I asked for.”

That’s heady stuff, and it is sung powerfully by Desi Oakley, who

his rendition of “Never Getting Rid of Me” in a performance that defies description, except to say it’s brilliant.

As Jenna’s other gal pal, waitress Becky, Charity Angel Dawson lends a bit of sarcastic leavening to the proceedings, which is much needed

at times. But her Act One opener “”I Didn’t Plan It,” feels a bit forced as Becky defends her tryst with Cal (Ryan G. Dunkin), her usually scowling boss at the diner.

But when the songs fit the storyline and drive it forward, the tunes by Bareilles work splendidly. This is demonstrated at the end of Act One when Jenna and Dr. Pomatter (played as a slightly nervous but quite adorable fellow by Bryan Fenkart) share their feelings, and a medical exam table, in “Bad Idea.” In this intricately choreographed encounter, the passionate duo confronts their doubts and decide to knock boots anyhow.

As directed by the esteemed Diane Paulus, this show is sweet but never saccharine and it goes down real smooth. If I were Jenna, I’d call it “The ‘You’ll Laugh, You’ll Cry, You’ll Sigh with Delight’ Pie.” Yum.

MOVIES ROCKIN’ ROBIN Story of Winnie the Pooh creator and his son is an October gem

You saw him in Ex Machina, Brooklyn, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. You’ll recognize the ginger locks, the gangly frame, the timid lips. You may know that he’s the son of the much girthier Irish actor Brendan Gleeson, and you’ll no doubt recall your introduction to him: as Bill Weasley in the final installments of the Harry Potter films. Gleeson now assumes the role of British writer A.A. Milne, the creator of Winnie the Pooh, in Goodbye Christopher Robin, which opens Friday at select theaters.

Early in the film, Milne and his wife Daphne (Margot Robbie) move to the English countryside with their young son Christopher Robin, whom they call Billy Moon. Milne is haunted by memories of the First World War and seeks the peace and quiet of cottage life so that he might continue writing plays. Daphne, a socialite, longs to return to London and finally does, promising her husband that she won’t return until he bucks up and puts pen to paper.

Alone with his son, then, Milne invents the fictional world that would become the Hundred Acre Wood and the famed characters still beloved today: Winnie the Pooh, Eeyore,

Tigger, Piglet, Kanga.

To the Milnes’ surprise and delight, the Winnie the Pooh stories become national bestsellers. The whimsical children’s tales help heal the national wounds inflicted by the Great War, help dry the tears of children missing their fathers, of mothers missing their sons. But as an unwanted side effect, young Billy Moon --- the real-life Christopher Robin! – becomes a national celebrity.

He is soon carted around the country for live radio interviews, photoshoots and appearances at toy stores. The film presents the Milnes as a kind of precursor to the Kardashians, though an unhappy one. Milne is at times jealous of his son, and Billy

grows resentful of the father who betrayed him.

In substance and in style, Goodbye Christopher Robin is easy to compare to 2004’s Finding Neverland, another sentimental literary origin story. Like that film, this one stars a young boy forced to grow up too quickly in ways he’d rather not. Christopher Robin, played by Will Tilston, has a perfect face. It arches in anger and creases in laughter at a moment’s notice. In a heartrending scene, the 8-year-old Billy Moon pleads with his nanny (Kelly Macdonald) to marry him because he’s terrified that she’ll abandon him, just as his parents have.

(Incidentally, Marc Forster, the director of Finding Neverland, has his own Christopher Robin film coming out in 2018, starring Ewen McGregor as the boy all grown up.)

Macdonald (the voice of Merida in Pixar’s Brave) is in fact the star of the show. As Christopher Robin’s nanny, she is closer to him than anyone and often seems to be the only one who truly loves him.

She is the only one, at any rate, who bothers to notice what fame has done to him. Still, she gets no respect from Daphne, who has the audacity to question her loyalty in the film’s tensest scene.

Daphne makes no secret of the fact that she’d always hoped her son would have been a girl. Boys, she glumly reports, grow up and go off to war. And sure enough, Christopher Robin comes of age just in time for World War II. As he boards the train headed for the front – at last, on his own terms – the Hundred Acre Wood and the childhood that produced it, like all childhoods, seem fleeting and far off indeed.

SPOTLIGHT: HUMAN FLOW CHINESE ACTIVIST AND filmmaker Ai Weiwei’s sprawling new documentary shines a bright light on one of the most dire human events on the planet right now: the refugee crisis that has funneled millions of people out of war, oppression and climatic danger in countries like Syria, Myanmar and Afghanistan.

Their destination? On one hand, these populations are seeking asylum in places like Germany; on the other hand, it’s profoundly complicated and always in flux. Tragedy is the sole constant.

The scope of Weiwei’s portrayal is remarkable, transcending the Western headlines that crawl across transitional scenes. You might remember this one: “Migrant chaos mounts while divided Europe stumbles for response.” That’s Sept.

3, 2015, in the New York Times, and it works handily as a foundational thesis for Human Flow.

The film opens Friday at the Cedar Lee Theatre. (Cleveland Cinemas has partnered with the Migration and Refugee Services of the Catholic Charities’ Cleveland Diocese for an audience discussion following the 4 p.m. showing on Oct. 28.)

Throughout the film, we rarely spend more than a few minutes on any individual person or family.

Rather, Weiwei alternates between close-up shots -- brief exchanges of anguished looks while a group plans how to ford a river in northern Greece -- and expansive sweeps across a countryside, hundreds of refugees wending inland across long, lonely roads.

We hear about the murder of

Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and we hear about itinerant bombing in Jobar (a municipality in war-torn Damascus), but the filmmaker doesn’t linger. The sheer magnitude of this crisis, unseen since World War II: That is the story here.

In times of great human strife, where is everyone supposed to go? How are the rest of us supposed to respond? What’s the moral responsibility? Throughout the artistic inquiry, Weiwei is omnipresent. He walks alongside long lines of men, women and children, filming their progress through the lens of his phone and frequently interacting with them: questions, jokes, laughter.

Behind those fleeting moments, the global problem grows ever more dire.

In Jordan, border security agents describe the influx of refugees through sanctioned entry points and through unofficial crossings. In all, that country is facing a population increase of 1.4 million refugees. The agent compares that to 60 million new refugees in the U.S., a global superpower that has capped its 2018 refugee limit at an historic low of 45,000. With more border walls than the world has seen since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the ramifications of the worsening refugee crisis grow deeper. This is where the immediate impact of Weiwei’s work is laid bare. There is no rational excuse not to see this film.

SHELL GAMES What has two claws and needs to step it up? The reborn Lobster Pot in Willoughby Hills

By Douglas Trattner THERE LITERALLY IS ALMOST nothing easier to cook than a live lobster. For something so decadent, so delicious, it really is remarkable that all a home cook needs to know how to do is boil water and set a timer.

The real hassle, as anybody who has done the deed can attest, is everything else, from sourcing a fresh specimen to cleaning up the bloody mess afterwards. Cumbersome stockpots need to be scoured, butter-stained linens must be treated and laundered, and a million tiny shell fragments have to be hoovered off the floor before the dog chokes half to death. And then there’s the smell, a clam-shack perfume that lingers long after the memories of the feast have faded.

Fortunately, there are places like the Lobster Pot, where diners can enjoy all of the good while leaving most of the bad to others. The Willoughby Hills restaurant is a reprise of an old favorite that existed for 30-odd years in South Euclid.

This new spot was opened, a few months back, by Chris Haffey, the son of the original owner. Like the previous haunt, this one happily leans casual, where music from the adjacent barroom seeps into the dining room and spontaneous conversations between tables are commonplace.

arrived perfectly steamed and was a breeze to eat and enjoy. If we had to guess (and because we left our hanging scale at home, we did), the small lobster fell short of the advertised weight of a pound and a quarter. But we were more disappointed by the fact that we had no choice at all when it came to the size of our dinner. Our dreams of pigging out on a jumbo crustacean were dashed by a menu notation stating that anything above the standard size requires a two-day notice.

Initial plans called for Haffey to install a live lobster tank, but the only tank in sight was filled with tropical

ominously viscous, a condition that is only partially corrected by the addition of sherry, which is served as a sidecar to the bowl. A complete and utter absence of lobster meat doesn’t stand in the way of the deep, rich and comforting flavors of the bisque.

Rounding out our lobster-themed dishes at the Lobster Pot, the lobster roll ($19 for a pair of small buns) violated three of the four cardinal rules: the filling was over-dressed, excessively garnished and, worst of all, it wasn’t even 100-percent lobster meat. Inside the buttered, toasted split-top bun (point!) was a mix of chopped meat, whole langoustino tails, and loads of sliced celery in a watery

fish, none of which looked large enough to eat. Our server explained that, for now at least, daily orders from the fishmonger would replace a large tank filled with variety. While that lobster did come with warm drawn butter and a pair of sides, it did not include the offer of a pre-meal bib or post-meal Wet-Naps until requested.

I never made it to the first Lobster Pot, but its fine reputation for lobster bisque endured long after its demise.

The version served here ($7) arrives

mayo-based dressing. Additional lobster-based menu items include a lobster pizza, twin butterflied tails, and lobster Newburg served atop a bed of risotto.

If that risotto is anything like the risotto that propped up our seared sea scallops ($26), it likely is gummy, pasty and largely congealed into one solid mass. We picked the four sweet, garlicky scallops off the top and left the risotto largely untouched. Sadly, the situation was nearly identical in

the case of the shrimp sauté ($24), whereby four plump, perfectly cooked shrimp bathed in lemon butter were presented atop a nest of angel hair pasta so overcooked that it was mushy.

We had more fun splashing around in the starter section. Deep-fried whole-belly clams ($12) really did remind us of a Downeast feast. The golden brown nuggets were fat, fleshy and clean tasting. Nearly a dozen specimens were served with fresh lemon and tartar sauce. Same goes for the fried smelts ($10), which had an herbed breading and firm, fresh texture. A quartet of golf ball-size hushpuppies ($6), while more dense than airy, possess a comforting corn flavor.

Service throughout our meal was gracious and unceremonious – so unceremonious, in fact, that our server felt comfortable sweeping up around us as we finished our meal at 9:30 p.m. It’s not like the dining room is built for lingering. In an attempt to introduce character to a generic shopping plaza space, management hung a few off-the-shelf nautical knick-knacks. The tactic is about as effective as hanging a poster of a Lamborghini in hopes of mimicking the sizzle of South Beach.

FOOD HALL ACCELERATOR COMES TO OHIO CITY

By Douglas Trattner AT FIRST GLANCE, SMALLMAN Galley, which opened in Pittsburgh’s Strip District in 2015, is a public food hall populated by various and unique restaurant concepts. But this is not your average food hall, which typically features satellite outposts of already thriving, popular brands.

Just four operators were selected for an 18-month residency designed to give new operators an opportunity to fine-tune their startups while providing them with advice, mentoring and assistance on the path to opening a brick-and-mortar establishment.

In Pittsburgh, participating chefs are provided with a fully built-out kitchen within the 200-seat space.

They are granted total creative license to create their own brand and market that concept with help from Galley Group’s national public relations team. Along the way they receive business resources, strategy help and mentorship, including training in restaurant operations, help with drafting a business plan, and securing financing.

In addition to coffee, lunch and dinner service, the tenants act as caterers for a whole host of public and private events that take place in the historic building, which has a property-wide liquor license, two bars, and professionally run beverage program. The concept has been so successful, it even landed a collective spot on NEXTpittsburgh’s annual roundup of Best New Restaurants.

When Galley Group co-founders Tyler Benson and Benjamin Mantica open a Cleveland location in the fall of 2018, the playbook will largely be the same. The number of participants may vary, as might the residency length, but the goal will be the same: help nascent food-based businesses establish proof of concept on their path to success.

“The Galley Group team is very excited about our new food hall project in the Ohio City neighborhood of Cleveland,” says Mantica, Co-CEO of Galley Group. “There are a ton of talented

chefs in the Cleveland area ready to run their own restaurant, we are thrilled to be able to offer aspiring restaurateurs that opportunity.

We look forward to becoming a meaningful part of the incredible food and beverage scene in Cleveland.”

The venture will be taking over the ground floor of the Forest City Bank Building at the corner of West 25th Street and Detroit Avenue, a turn-of-the-century structure on the National Register of Historic Places.

That property is being redeveloped by the Snavely Group, which is also behind the largeQuarter project across the street.

Galley Group will occupy the 7,500-square-foot space presently operated as Massimo Da Milano Italian restaurant. The restaurant, which was opened in 1990 by partners Antonio Di Iorio and Rocco Esposito, now functions largely as a private-events facility and will continue to do so until the middle of January.

As we get closer to opening day, expected to take place next fall, we will continue to share more details about the project, including when and how chefs can apply for the first term of residency.

FIRST LOOK: BOSS DOG BREWING IN CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OPENING SOON It’s been 15 months since Josh and Jason Sweet were handed the keys to the building that for 20 years was home to Lemon Grass Thai Cuisine in Cleveland Heights.

In the meantime, the pair has completely transformed the property from a dim and dated eatery to Boss Dog Brewing (2179 Lee Rd.), a crisp new bar, brewery and pub. With the finishing touches now being applied, the owners have announced opening day as Thursday, Nov. 2.

tile floors jack-hammered up, drop ceilings removed, basement footers added, support columns and beams installed, concrete slabs poured, and a shiny 10-barrel brewhouse prominently positioned so that it’s visible to guests and passerby alike.

The Sweets teamed up with Richardson Design to achieve a cohesive look. Attempts were made to bring the brewery into the dining room, says Josh. In addition to the large picture windows that separate brewhouse from bar, there’s a dramatic light fixture assembled out of repurposed kegs. Mini fermentation tanks will become patio accents.

Apart from opening and brightening up the entire interior, the most significant improvement was the installation of a large glass garage door panel. Not only does it introduce a ton of natural light into the dining room, in warm months it will open directly onto the patio, which is in the process of being tripled in size from its original dimensions. Guests will be able to enter the brewery from either the front or the rear of the building.

Jason, who worked for years at Fat Head’s production facility, has been busy brewing the pub’s initial offerings. By opening day, four beers – Chief Chinook Pale Ale, Buck IPA, Dog Pound Brown, and a double IPA – should be ready for consumption.

The plan going forward is to have 10 house beers supplemented by another 10 guest beers from Ohio producers.

In addition to onsite enjoyment, the suds can be popped into a crowler or growler for take-away.

An all new kitchen will turn out “gastropub” fare that should appeal to most tastes and budgets.

“This will be a family place where you can bring everybody,” Josh says of the brewpub.

Bar snacks like chipotle-maple nuts and garlic knots will be paired with small plates like Korean-braised beef sliders and smoked blue mac and cheese. Soups, salads and deckoven pizzas join a short rib torta, pulled pork sandwich and beef or black bean burger. A half dozen entrees, priced in the $19-24 range, include braised short rib, cedarplank salmon and bone-in pork chop.

A build-your-own pierogi option lets diners mix and match fillings with toppings.

Boss Dog will be dinner-only to start, with weekend lunch coming online a few weeks after opening.

HARLOW’S NOW SERVING UP WOOD-FIRED PIZZA IN LAKEWOOD On a recent morning, John Sweeney is kneading pizza dough while chatting about his newlyopened Lakewood restaurant, Harlow’s (14319 Madison Ave., 216712-6502). He’s been at work since 6:30 a.m. and, except for a lunch break with his kids, won’t leave until late into the night.

Sweeney says the goal, before he and fiancee Emily Flamos even opened the spot, was to perfect the dough and menu and come up with the best product possible. So first they traveled to Italy to find out how to make traditional pies.

“It is just pizza,” Sweeney admits. “But you know, we went to Naples and we went to New York and we went to Toronto, and we felt that west side was missing out on a certain style of pizza. So we’re sticking to traditional Neapolitan recipe here.”

The 12-inch pies, which Sweeney makes individually himself, are made with fresh ingredients and precision. The menu only offers five of choices — Marinara, Margherita, Bianca, Salami and Leonardo — and no substitutions are allowed. Once assembled, the personal pizza is popped into the mouth of the 800-degree woodfired oven for 60 to 90 seconds.

The pizza is then meant to be eaten immediately (although the spot will do carryouts).

Harlow’s, which is named after the couple’s daughter, also offers a small selection of wine, beer, spirits and sodas.

Regarding the Mexican-style decor and open-air atmosphere of the small 1,000-square-foot place, Sweeney says, “We didn’t want you to walk in and hear Frank Sinatra, and we didn’t want it to look like other old-school Italian shops.”

After a few weeks up and running in Lakewood, Sweeney says the feedback has been positive, although some wait times have grown quite long on busy nights.

But he says he’s not willing to compromise quality for speed.

“I can see people, it’s the head nod when they take that first bite.

FINDING HER ROOTS A road trip through the Smoky Mountains inspired the songs on Tori Amos’ new album

WHEN WE LAST TALKED TO singer-songwriter Tori Amos in 2014, she had just released Unrepentant Geraldines, a collection of songs that center on the theme of growing older. At the time, Amos had just turned 50. When we remind her of our conversation, she almost sounds apologetic as she explains her state of mind at the time.

“If we just talked when I was 50, I was probably in the middle of menopausal hell,” she laughs during a call from London, where she had just wrapped a Euoropean tour in support of her new album, Native Invader. She comes to the State Theatre on Sunday. “I’m on the other side of that now, and I am

sparkling and smiling, and I feel the energy so that’s good. There’s a light at end of the tunnel, but you don’t know it when you’re in the middle of the tunnel.”

Amos’ fifteenth album, Native Invader, an “intense feast of melody, protest, tenderness and pain,” as it’s put in a press release describing it, stems from a road trip she took through the Smoky Mountains. She says she wanted to reconnect with her mother’s family, who were from the area.

Just a year ago, Amos and longtime friend and manager John Witherspoon took that road trip as Amos, a North Carolina native whose maternal grandparents had Eastern Cherokee grandparents,

sought to discover her roots.

The venture became a formative experience and informs many of Native Invader’s tunes.

“I was hoping to get closer to my mom’s dad and the stories he told me,” Amos says of the road trip.

“That’s where he grew up. I wanted to be in the vicinity and with nature to see if I could feel closer to him.

He was my favorite person — Poppa.

He was an amazing weaver of a tale.

He could tell you anything. He’d light his pipe, and you couldn’t look away as he began talking. I was a kid, and he died when I was nine and half. When he died, I cried and cried because I couldn’t hear the stories anymore.”

She says she started to remember

his stories a few years ago, and their fragments began to inform her songwriting.

“It’s almost like his spirit came back,” she says. “So I wanted to go and feel that, yet songs weren’t coming right away. I wanted to be there and listen and just ‘be’ in the Smokies.”

Then the U.S. presidential election took place. A few months later, Amos’ mother Mary suffered a debilitating stroke and lost the ablity to speak or communicate in any fashion. After all that, Amos says “the songs started to come like a sonic tsunami.”

MUSIC Hawley, holed up at Martian Engineering, Hawley’s studio in Cornwall, England, and began shaping the songs. Though the album features string arrangements and dense layers of synthesizers and electronic instrumentation, Amos says she and Hawley played most of the instruments themselves.

“Everything except ‘Reindeer King’ and ‘Mary’s Eyes’ is just me and Mark [Hawley],” she says.

“We played everything else, and we’re not divorced yet. It was very challenging. We’re both dealing with our mothers’ health. Trying to organize schedules -- when you can work with people and when you can’t -- is difficult. We just said, ‘Screw it.’ And we rolled up our sleeves and did it ourselves. It became an adventure.”

With distorted bluesy guitars and a bit of old school organ, “Broken Arrow” possesses a great roots rock feel. Amos says the song’s narrative helped determine her approach to the music. She passionately sings, “Have we lost her” over distorted synths that suggest the anguish at the tune’s core.

“I knew what the song was saying, and that made the choices in that arrangement,” Amos explains.

“We were pushing each other. I wanted to make the Native peeps proud.”

She says a call from her sister’s friend, who’s part of the Association of American Indian Physicians Community, helped trigger the lyrical content.

With its refrain “good Lord willin’ and the creek don’t rise,” “Up the Creek,” a song that features chirping strings and fluttering electronic noises, includes a reference to her aforementioned grandfather.

“Anytime you’d ask him anything, he’d say, ‘Good Lord willin’ and the creek don’t rise, granddaughter,’” Amos says. “[The song is] a shout out to him because he was always somebody that made sense to me. When [my mother] couldn’t talk anymore, it became really important that I valued what storytelling could do and the power of words and the power of voice.

It’s not like Mary can pick up an iPad and start typing. We’re just not there yet. I’m flying to see her tomorrow before the tour starts. To look into her eyes, you still get that love. I know she’s frustrated because she’s trapped.”

As much as grim realities inspired the songs on the album, it’s not a downer. With their dramatic piano flourishes and rich vocals, songs such as “Benjamin” and “Reindeer King” come off as vintage Tori Amos tunes.

“The Muses kicked my ass,” says Amos. “They said to me, ‘You have to shift your vibe. We are not bringing destruction. We are not bringing Boys for Pele. You did that 20 years ago. You did that tour. That’s your bloodletting album. It’s not what you need to

“She’s been in that community since the late ’70s,” Amos explains.

“I got sent some messages. With everything going on and the references to President Jackson, I started to dig up my history lessons, and I remembered hearing my grandfather talk about Andrew Jackson and the Indian Removal Act and all of that. It seemed [like an] essential [issue] with the water protectors and what is going on with the EPA and the Department of Interior. All of that is in play and layered in that song. Jackson’s life was saved by a Native American person who years later regretted it.

be doing at almost 54 right now.’

They told me something different is coming, and that I have to shift.

It showed me a sonic wildwood, so that whatever emotional whiplash is happening that day in the news or all the tragedies that seem to be happening, whether it’s hurricanes or floods or fires or ‘other,’ they’re sending music whereby people can hopefully step into it. If they need resilience at that moment, they’ll find it in one of the songs. If they need magic mushrooms sonically, they might find that too.”

MUSIC GRECIAN FORMULA Barb Wire Dolls take an old school punk rock approach on their new album LIKE SO MANY CUTTING-EDGE bands that came before them, Barb Wire Dolls got by with a little help from a certain Rodney Bingenheimer. Before most Americans knew anything about the Grecian punk rock act, the influential DJ began playing the band’s music on his radio program, subsequently building a stateside buzz for the indie act that had only self-released its albums at that point.

“Somehow, Rodney Bingenheimer discovered our music and starting playing us,” says singer Isis Queen in a recent phone interview. Barb Wire Dolls perform on Friday at Musica in Akron. “He discovered bands like David Bowie and the Sex Pistols and Guns N Roses. He got our music and started playing our demo on his radio show. That was the best thing that ever happened to us. He invited us to play a show in L.A. We accepted and sold everything we had right then and there [to get to the States]. We sold out the [L.A. club] Roxy and got signed by [Motörhead’s late singerbassist] Lemmy Kilmister.”

To hear Queen explain it, growing up in Greece in the late ‘90s and early 2000s wasn’t that much different than growing up in the States where acts like Eminem and Jay-Z ruled the airwaves.

Queen, however, had different musical interests than her peers.

“I have always gravitated toward rock ’n’ roll even though my generation was all about hip-hop and rap,” she says. “My go-to music was ’50s Motown and rockabilly. That was natural for me. I then gravitated to punk rock because later on, I was fed up and sick of all the music that was pushed in the mainstream. I loved old rock ’n’ roll from the ‘70s, even classic rock, because the lyrics meant something and the music had a real energy. All the music from my generation is just flash-in-the-pan stuff that had no real emotion to it.”

Originally, the band formed when members met in what Queen describes as “an artist commune” out in the mountains of Crete. Queen cites punk acts such as the Ramones, X and the New York Dolls as influences.

“The commune that we lived in was a 600-year-old group of houses,” she explains. “There were

international artists that were there.

I wanted to express myself so we started a punk band just for the fun of it. We couldn’t play shows because no one wanted to listen to punk rock, and no one would book us. We had to go to Athens, and we found a bar that would let us play on Sundays. We’d get whatever bands were just forming and would do it every weekend. It was great. Somehow, a scene started.”

Thanks to some very supportive fans, the band self-funded its first few releases and even managed to record its debut album, 2012’s Slit, in Chicago with engineer extraordinaire

friends. Every album we created — somehow our fans have pitched in.”

When it came time to record their latest album, Rub My Mind, band members decided to work with Jay Baumgardner, the guy who produced their previous effort, 2016’s Desperate.

The group had plans to record at Rancho De La Luna, the Joshua Tree studio where Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss had recorded their albums.

“We were invited to record there,” says Queen. “It’s a huge honor. We accepted that invitation. When we were driving there, we were just finished up our tour and on the

“We have great fans,” says Queen.

“Our families didn’t put a dime into it. They can’t help us out that way because they’re not capable. We had to find jobs. I worked in a surf shop for the first year when we lived in L.A., but it wasn’t enough. Now, we just stay at our friends’ houses. We don’t even have a home here in the States.

phone with [Eagles of Death Metal guitarist] Dave [Catching] when he was on tour in Europe. Ten minutes later, the attacks happened in Paris.

It was a terrifying situation. We literally just got off the phone with him, and an hour later we found out about the shooting. We didn’t intend to record the album anymore. It was a crazy situation. Dave contacted us and said he still wanted us to

come to the studio. We told him we thought the sessions were over. He said, ‘The music must go on. They can’t take this from us.’ That inspired everything.”

At that point, the group had only written a couple of songs. But inspired by Catching’s resilience, it quickly wrote the rest of the album’s tracks.

“The songs were written by the emotions and frustrations and pure shock of it all,” says Queen. “We’re very proud of the album.”

The Green Day-inspired “If I Fall” features a rolling bass riff and hiccupping vocals while “Desert Song,” a track that includes a mix of acoustic and electric guitars, comes off as a classic power ballad.

“We’re all looking for answers,” says Queen when asked about “Desert Song.” “The only thing that’s certain in life is death. You have to overcome those fears you have about living your life. It’s about being free. It’s about breaking free from all those things you’re brought up with and finding the power that’s inside of you.”

MUSIC BACK TO THE BEGINNING Our Lady Peace’s new EP captures the magic of its early material AS A CLEVELANDER, IT’S EASY to take for granted how easily one can hop in the car and in about five hours be on the Canadian side of things in Toronto, Ontario. Thanks to that relative close proximity, fans have often had the benefit of connecting with bands from the Canadian scene whose music filters this way. Eventually, things build to the point that the groups end up coming here to play shows, closing the gap on a long-distance love affair that finally becomes permanent.

Thanks to active radio support from both WMMS-FM The Buzzard and alternative crosstown rivals, WENZ-FM, 107.9 The End, a diverse slate of Canadian bands found their way into many a CD collection in the ‘90s. One of the most interesting sounding groups to emerge during that era was Our Lady Peace, the Toronto-bred band led by charismatic frontman Raine Maida, who released their debut album, Naveed, on Sony Music Canada in early 1994. Their album wouldn’t arrive officially in America until a year later, finally seeing a release here in the States on the Sony subsidiary Relativity Records in March of 1995.

The muscular rocker “Starseed” took hold at both rock and alternative radio -- and listening to the track now, it’s not hard to hear how the song found an audience. As you dig deeper into the album, the depth and confidence that the group had on display so early in its career is astonishing — the title track remains a stunning epic that clocks in at nearly six minutes, musically stacked with layers of complexity that made the band sound like a seasoned veteran rather than the relatively green players that it was at that time.

Reflecting back on the experience of making that first album, Maida now says “it’s either confidence or being naive,” when discussing how far along the developmental path the band’s music sounded in those early days.

“When we signed our record deal, Sony didn’t really give a shit, they were like, ‘Oh, there’s some good songs, go do what you’re doing,’” he says in a phone interview. “We were making demos and they kind of sounded like that anyway, so

they just said, ‘Yeah, keep going’ and never really paid attention to us. I think not knowing anything about the music business was perfect. Naveed was this incredible journey where we were able just to do whatever we wanted to do. We didn’t have to answer to anyone and, again, we didn’t know anything. We didn’t even care about radio [potential]. We never talked about that — ever. It was never like, ‘Oh, what’s going to be the single?’ Until we finally delivered the record, none of that shit ever came up. So it was really like art at its purest form.”

In late August, the band released a new EP, comprising the first four songs —including “Drop Me in the Water.” It’s an impressive and strong sampling of what will eventually be their next full-length album, Somethingness. They’re releasing the material from the album in two installments with a second EP release tentatively slated for December if Maida has his way. “I was arguing with my manager the other day,

ready, they went into Jackson Browne’s studio in Santa Monica, California, where they tracked the material live for the first time as a band, with Maida estimating that they kept about 80 percent of what was put down in those initial sessions, successfully resisting the urge to go back and revise what they had done.

“It puts a unique pressure on a band, and Jackson’s place is setup to do that,” he says. “The sightlines for everyone are amazing, the sounds are great and you hit record and you go for it and that’s what comes out. There’s just no other way to get the energy like we have on these two volumes without doing that. It just doesn’t work. There’s something about playing together and the anticipation and just knowing that you can’t go redo stuff. It just brings out a different side from an artist and a musician, and I think we’re thrilled by it.”

he’s like, ‘Well, we have to wait until January to put the new thing out’ and I was like, ‘No fuckin’ way, man.

I can’t wait that long.’”

He says that the new material emerged over the past three years with demos going back and forth.

When it felt like the songs were

in quite some time. Fans will essentially be rewarded with two shows for the price of one. First, Maida and the group will open with a heavy selection of material from the Clumsy album, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Following a short break, they’ll

finish out the night with a second set which features a mix of both fan favorites and also material from both installments of the Somethingness EPs — Maida is perfectly fine if fan recordings of the unreleased material from the second EP circulate. “We’re going to be playing those songs live,” he says. “People will hopefully record them and trade them around.”

As Maida remembers, when they were working on the Clumsy album, their record label became anxious and wanted to hear the new material to get a hint of what they might expect from the group.

“We had them come in, and they heard ‘Clumsy’ and a few other songs and they were like, ‘Okay, this is great, when do you guys think you’re going to have it done?’ That might have been something to do with it, but after they left, that’s when I went and wrote those other songs and then when we handed in the final thing, they were just flipping out,” he says. “It was really exciting. It was still really pure for us, because you never know what’s going to happen and we really wrote those songs from our heart and it was still close to Naveed in terms of nothing Machiavellian. We weren’t really trying to take over the world.

We weren’t really thinking about singles, but we were feeling like, okay, as artists, there’s something more personal about this that maybe people are going to connect to more.

We could feel that. So when the label was hyped about it, it was like, okay, maybe we got to where we wanted to go.”

Looking back at what they accomplished with the success of Naveed and Clumsy, Maida feels a good amount of the same spirit in the songs that will be released later this year on the second EP. “It really feels somewhere back to those first two records in terms of the way the music speaks to you and the way the music feels,” he says.

“Sonically and stuff, it’s different, obviously. But I get that same feeling, which is really amazing.”

Gabriel Alegria’s Afro Peruvian Sextet: As far-fetched as it might seem, the Gabriel Alegria AfroPeruvian Sextet that performs at the Bop Stop tonight has ties to Ohio.

Band leader Gabriel Alegria was born in Lima in 1970. His father, the playwright Alonso Alegria, was a visiting professor at Kenyon College, and while Gabriel Alegria was there in the mid-’80s, he attended high school in the area. Alegria then

studied at the National Conservatory in Lima and at Kenyon College. He earned his master’s in jazz studies at City College in New York and completed his doctorate in jazz studies at the University of Southern California. Twelve years ago, while at USC, he formed his sextet. The Bop Stop performance will celebrate the release of the band’s sixth CD, Diablo en Brooklyn. (Niesel), 8 p.m.

By Jeff Niesel MEET THE BAND: Thor Platter (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Paul Kovac (banjo, guitar, drums, vocals), Paul Lewis (bass, vocals) BLUEGRASS AND BLUES: Born and raised in Buffalo, local singersongwriter Thor Platter received a good dose of classic rock as a youth when his sister introduced him to her record collection. She had albums by guys such as Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.

His motherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s love of traditional Irish music and her Beach Boys obsession left a lasting impression too. Platter also dug into his fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collection of bluegrass and blues, giving him a fairly eclectic musical background, all of which heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s channeled into his own music.

A CLEVELAND TRANSPLANT: In Buffalo, Platter played with the Fatbacks, a group that regularly played the local circuit and hit up regional festivals. He left Buffalo and arrived in Cleveland a few years ago. In 2013, he issued Looking for Sunshine, an album of songs that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d written over the course of the previous decade. He followed it up with 2015â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Long Road Ahead, which he recorded locally at Blue Buddha Studio with Jim Wall, the guy who owns the place. Recorded and produced by local musician David MayďŹ eld at his Tiger Spa studio in Akron, Platterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new album, Take Time, features the singer and songwriter and a trio of musicians. Platter met Lewis shortly after he moved from Nashville back to North Ridgeville and recruited him to play in his band. He then recruited Kovac, a local guy whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s played in a number of different ensembles. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At the end of last year, the band ďŹ nally came together, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been able to play out of town as a trio and get a great response,â&#x20AC;? says Platter, adding that he doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t consider him a bluegrass musician even though he plays some music that approximates bluegrass. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I consider myself Americana,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I thought for a second I could be called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;new acoustic,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; but I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how you would describe my music. We just approached the album as singer-songwriter stuff, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve immersed myself in playing bluegrass leads on the

Take Time opener â&#x20AC;&#x153;Destinedâ&#x20AC;? features a bit of banjo as Platter reďŹ&#x201A;ects on feeling a bit wanderlust one day on â&#x20AC;&#x153;a dark snow in Buffalo.â&#x20AC;? The song certainly reďŹ&#x201A;ects his Midwestern mentality. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I remember sitting in my room at my home in Buffalo one day, and it was miserable out,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was dark and gloomy, and if you didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get out to plow the driveway, you werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t getting out for the day.â&#x20AC;? Platter wrote â&#x20AC;&#x153;Open Up Your Heartâ&#x20AC;? when he was only 18. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the songs all go together, and they come from a place of growing up in another Midwest town. Buffalo and Cleveland are really similar, but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re also really different from each other.

I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t imagine moving now. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great here now.â&#x20AC;? Since most of the songs on the record date back a few years, Platter and MayďŹ eld plan to start recording another album in January with the songs that Platter has just written.

by Dan Savage Dear Dan, In a frank exchange early in our courtship, I told my girlfriend that I have no kinks. As a faithful reader of Savage Love, I’m obviously not opposed to kinks—but I’ve never had any inclinations in that direction and am probably a typical hetero vanilla. As a result, I’m damn near clueless in that area. Last night, my girlfriend placed my hands around her neck and asked me to choke her.

My instant reaction was to say no, not out of any objection in principle but because I thought it might be dangerous in my inexperienced hands.

Later I did comply, but I was definitely holding back. I dearly love my main squeeze—clever pun there, huh?—and I want to be GGG, but… well, you see my misgivings. I know about safe words, but can we count on them when the recipient’s larynx is being compromised and she may be close to passing out? For the record, I had no difficulty in acceding to her request to be bitten, as I know where and how hard I can do that without causing damage, but choking is an area of darkness for me. And let me note that my girlfriend has no grounding in medicine, physiology, or anything that would lead me to be comfortable trusting her judgment about choking.

veins—the neck is a crowded place, it’s vulnerable, and putting sustained pressure on someone’s neck is extremely risky.

Matisse also noted: “The person doing the choking needs to be aware that they’re on the hook legally—for at least manslaughter charges—if the person who asked to be choked should die.”

Jay Wiseman, author of SM 101, not only takes a similarly dim view of choking, CHOKE, he’s served as an expert witness at the trials of people who choked someone to death during sex.

“It’s always inherently lifethreatening, and it’s always inherently unpredictable,” said Wiseman. “It’s more dangerous than suffocation, as you can get into deeper trouble more quickly. People have died from a few seconds of being choked. There simply are no landmarks—meaning, you can’t say to a reasonable degree of medical certainty that if you ‘only’ choke someone for 30 seconds, they’ll be okay.”

I’m tempted to leave it there, CHOKE, because I worry that anything else I might say—anything remotely equivocal—could result in one idiot choking another to death. But the fact of the matter is that choking, despite the risks, is a relatively common kink, and almost all deaths related to breath play occur during solo scenes, not partnered scenes. So I’m going to give you a little advice about meeting your girlfriend’s particular needs safely, i.e., without wrapping your hands around her neck.

“What most people who are into choking want is to feel controlled,” said Matisse. “So put your hand over her mouth. Grab her hair, wrap an arm around her shoulder—not her neck— and put your other hand over her mouth. That should satisfy the urge.”

Another option, CHOKE, is a gas mask. If it’s not too disturbing a look— if it’s not a boner-killer—you can put a gas mask on someone, cover the breathing hole with the flat of your hand, and cut off your partner’s air.

All they have to do when they need a breath is shake their head, which will break the seal created by your palm.
