UPFRONT ZACK REED UNDER FIRE

CLEVELAND ATTORNEY SUBODH Chandra and Samaria Rice have called upon mayoral candidate Zack Reed to “disavow, repudiate and reject” the endorsement of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association, the police union for rank-and-file officers.

That organization endorsed Reed last week, but Chandra and Rice said that under the leadership of Steve Loomis, the CPPA has become an “extremist, anti-reform, pro-Donald Trump” union.

In a Monday morning press conference, both Chandra and Rice read prepared statements. The intent was to demand action from Reed: that he reject the endorsement, return any financial contributions from the union and apologize to Clevelanders for his “poor judgement and moral bankruptcy.”

But the majority of the prepared material directly attacked Loomis himself. It was a storm of hostility that represented both a continuation, and an exaggeration, of the war of words between Chandra and Loomis that waged throughout the Tamir Rice legal proceedings.

Loomis was “morally depraved,” Chandra said. He was “smallminded” and “mean-spirited.” He was a “cancerous force” on the Cleveland Community Police Commission. He was “abnormal.” An endorsement from a Loomis-led organization was an endorsement “of lawlessness, a lack of accountability, a corrupt approach to governing, and the

white nationalism represented by Donald Trump.”

Chandra cited specific comments from Loomis about Tamir Rice and the Consent Decree — he told Trump it was a “waste of time” — and lashed out at the CPPA lawyers who had facilitated the “coddling treatment” of officers Timothy Loehmann and Frank Garmback during the Tamir Rice grand jury proceedings. The officers were permitted to read prepared statements but were not subjected to cross-examination. Chandra said that any competent prosecutor would have rigorously cross-examined the officers, and the fact that Timothy McGinty did not was evidence of a “manifestly corrupt” relationship between the union and politicians.

The CPPA had endorsed McGinty in 2012.

Chandra cited language from an Oct. 11 Zack Reed Tweet — “Thank you to the brave men and women of

the CPPA for your endorsement. I am extremely honored! #safetyfirst #zackreedformayor and asked how Reed, who previously criticized Loomis for the CPPA’s endorsement of Donald Trump, could now be “extremely honored” to receive the organization’s backing. He wondered whether the union “had anything” on Reed.

“With his three DUIs,” Chandra said, in a provocative moment, “what will happen the next time he’s pulled over by Cleveland Police?”

Chandra clarified that the press conference was not an endorsement of incumbent Mayor Frank Jackson, but rather an attempt to sound an alarm: that any endorsement by the CPPA under its current leadership should be considered “politically toxic.”

“Cleveland is better than its police union,” Chandra said. “Is Zack Reed?”

“Steve Loomis and his union have been working to undermine the consent decree, and work against fairer, safer bias-free policing that would save lives, and better policing that would have saved my son,” she said.

Rice said the CPPA “acts like white supremacists,” and said she was insulted by how they frequently change the “Black Lives Matter” phrase into “All Lives Matter” or “Blue Lives Matter.”

She said Reed had offered sympathy over the weekend, but that she wasn’t interested.

“Please spare me, Zack Reed,” she said. “If you were sympathetic, and were sincere and actually cared about my grief, then you would not have said you were extremely honored.”

UPFRONT Reached by phone after the press conference, Zack Reed said that he did not intend to reject the CPPA endorsement, but also said he stood by his previous comments about Steve Loomis.

When asked how he reconciled his opposition to Loomis in the past with his acceptance of the union endorsement now, Reed said there was nothing to reconcile.

“The Union is more than Steve Loomis,” Reed said. “They voted 27-0 to endorse me, 27-0. If I’m Mayor, I’m working to enforce the Consent Decree. I’m not trying to undermine anything.”

When asked directly if Loomis or the Union “had anything” on him, Reed said no. Nor was the endorsement something he sought.

He said that the last he’d heard from Loomis, the Union wouldn’t be endorsing either candidate in the race, so the news came as a surprise.

“All [Subodh Chandra] is doing is driving a wedge in between the police and the community,” Reed said. “I’ve cried with Samaria Rice.

I’ve sympathized. What I’m trying to do is improve police-community relations.”

NEXUS PIPELINE CONSTRUCTION IS IMMINENT IN OHIO The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission granted final approval to the Nexus pipeline construction job, which is now set to begin within the month. This formal decision comes two months after new Trump appointees suddenly advanced the project’s certification process.

The 36-inch natural gas pipeline will traverse northern Ohio, from the Utica shale play along the OH-PA border to the Dawn hub in Canada.

In all, we’re talking 255 miles of pipeline. The project clocks in at $2.1 billion.

Compared to the numerous other pipelines in the mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions, Nexus encountered a concerted pushback from property owners along the proposed route.

While the Rover pipeline was given fast approval (and has subsequently

spilled millions of gallons of drilling mud into Ohio wetlands), Nexus ownership was pulled into legal battles in multiple jurisdictions.

FERC granted approval to the project’s environmental impact last fall, igniting a fair amount of press attention at the same time that widespread protests were breaking out against the Dakota Access pipeline in North Dakota.

Community meetings along the pipeline route in Ohio underscored the safety and environmental concerns that grew in each county — Summit, Medina and Lorain

seeing particularly vocal opposition.

A lawsuit was filed against Nexus and FERC in May, seeking an injunction against the pipeline and citing the Taking Clause of the Fifth Amendment (because Nexus will be drawing natural gas from the U.S. and sending it immediately to a foreign country, bypassing any domestic customer base in Ohio or Michigan). That case, playing out in the Sixth District of Ohio, is still an open and active docket. In the event that the case is dismissed or that the judge rules in Nexus’ favor, there are administrative rehearing

FIREWORKS BILL PASSES THROUGH OHIO HOUSE Fireworks occupy a divisive point of discussion in Ohio each summer: You can purchase them here, but you must transport them out of the state within 48 hours. The only items that are allowed to be used in Ohio are “trick and novelty� doodads, like sparklers and bang snaps.

Of course, as many next-door neighbors can attest, plenty of people ignore this law outright.

With a 77-12 vote this week, though, the Ohio House moved forward a bill that would fully legalize the use of ďŹ reworks in Ohio at all times and on any day of the week. This includes all your heavy hitters: the spleen splitters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, HĂźsker DĂźs, HĂźsker don’ts, cherry bombs and nipsy dazers (with or without the scooter stick).

LET’S DO A HYPOTHETICAL. You’re in University Circle with some friends from out of town. Maybe you’re enjoying a bite in Little Italy or gazing in awe at the world-class collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art. It’s been fun. Your friends are thrilled. What about Lake Erie, though? It’s close, isn’t it? They’ve never seen a Great Lake before and want to bask in the freshwater wonder before leaving town. Any lakefront parks close by that you can take them to?

You think for a minute and rattle of the options: Mentor Headlands 30 miles to the east; Huntington

Beach 20 miles to the west; East Ninth by the Rock Hall, a pier not a park; and Edgewater Park about 10 miles away just west of downtown.

Maybe you check Google to make sure you haven’t missed anything else — that’s it, right? — or maybe some trace of a memory emerges and you say, oh yeah, there’s one more option: the Gordon Park area -- with its fishing piers and boat launch ramps -- just three miles north, a nice ride down MLK Jr. Dr. through Rockefeller Park. Seems like the obvious choice, right?

But then you give this some thought for a minute. Is there really

anything there? Hardly anyone talks about it. And it’s certainly not on any lists of Best Places to Enjoy Lake Erie or Best Places to Take a Visitor published in this mag or elsewhere.

A freeway interchange more than a park, there’s certainly no beach.

Slivers of sidewalks wedge in the few feet between the six-lane Shoreway and the water, and besides some fishermen, the only action one might catch is a car backing into a parking spot and flashing its lights for an untoward meeting.

This is no show-off-your-city spot. It’s more of a reminder of what the city was 30 or 40 years

ago, when the lakefront parks were afterthoughts full of filthy diapers and used heroin needles on the ground.

But what this eastside lakefront span once was and could be is now in the thought process of business leaders and city planners. The FirstEnergy Lake Shore power plant – built on this prime lakefront location in 1911 – was torn down earlier this year. And there is talk of taking the 60 acres of land the razed plant yields and turning that into some combination of park, trendy housing, business campus or whatever the moneyed interests and | clevescene.com | October 18 - 24, 2017

FEATURE political officials (and maybe community groups) want.

In other words, lots of talk that will likely go on for decades about who cleans up what, why public financing is needed to make neighborhood investment work on this side of town, and how to integrate public parks into the lives of Clevelanders who live in those neighborhoods a few miles away, all in pursuit of making good on long hollow and stalled promises to engage the waterfront. Oh, and the little matter of moving the Shoreway 500 yards south of the water to merge the FirstEnergy expanse with Gordon Park proper, the only way some advocates foresee the possibility of truly creating an Edgewater East.

A whole lot of people look at that lengthy and complex process and figure fixing up this shitty little park simply isn’t going to happen.

Others see a unique opportunity for Cleveland to plan and follow through on a major civic project, one with a generational impact, that would quite literally change how a large portion of the city’s population can

engage with one of its prime assets.

“The east side of Cleveland needs their own park, like Edgewater is for the people on the west side,” says Dick Clough, executive board chairman of the Green Ribbon Coalition, a waterfront use advocacy group. “The lakefront belongs to the people. We find ways to invest all

Cleveland city councilman Zack Reed, who is running for mayor against Frank Jackson, agrees.

“When people talk about Gordon Park, I usually have to correct them in how they refer to it,” he says.

“Because how we develop this land that is so near so many east side residents, so near to University Circle, and connected to Rockefeller Park, will have implication on this city for this century and beyond,” Clough continues. “And just about everyone agrees that moving that freeway so that it doesn’t cut the park in two is important. We just need to acknowledge that this is

neglected Gordon Park. We need to stop neglecting such important places like this in Cleveland.

“It is not a coincidence that the Gordon Park area has been neglected,” Reed continues. “The political and business powers in this city firmly believe that property and investment areas that are not downtown or on the west side of the city are really not part of the city.”

There is a lot of truth to what Reed says. Because if you look at the history of the Gordon Park area, its

rise to prominence came when the white power structure of Cleveland lived in Glenville and Hough. And its slide into deterioration began in earnest when that white power structure moved away as AfricanAmericans moved in after World War II. It is neglect. Nothing else.

The Cleveland Public Library has a great map collection. If you want to get some sense of how important now-neglected Gordon Park once was, there are the engineering plans for the park property from the early 1900s. They show bath houses and a big pavilion for festivities and gatherings, with gravel paths and roadways running through, and designs for arbor areas to provide shade for the bathers and their families. In fact, Gordon Park, in its early years, was known as a place where visitors would come at night to escape the heat, to spread their blankets on a hillside overlooking the beach and the let their children run around until they dozed off with their grandparents.

There are three important names on these old plats: Tom L. Johnson, William Stinchcomb, and Charles Schweinfurth. Johnson was the famed “progressive” mayor of the city at the time, and Stinchcomb was the city engineer, who later

—Ted Ferringer was responsible for the creation of the “Emerald Necklace” and the Metroparks. Schweinfurth was the city’s most well known architect back then, the designer of about 20 mansions on Euclid Avenue’s “Millionaire’s Row,” and also, more notably in history, as the architect who designed the bridges (with their winding staircases) that still arch over MLK Dr. in Rockefeller Park.

The reason these men, the best and brightest U.S. urban planners of the time, jumped on this 120-acre piece of property on Lake Erie where the Shoreway’s MLK Dr. interchange sits now was that this property was gift to the city to be used as park.

When William J. Gordon, who made his fortune in the wholesale grocery and iron ore businesses, died in 1892, he donated that land under the condition that it would forever remain a free, public park.

Ironically, around that very same time, Cleveland industrialist Jacob Perkins gifted a similarly sized property he owned to the city that would eventually become Edgewater Park.

Both became hugely popular in the early 1900s -- the Cleveland Orchestra even played concerts at both the east and westside parks on holidays in the 1920s.

But bad things started happening to Gordon Park. In 1911, the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co. built its coal-fired power plant just west of Gordon Park. They chose that site because Lake Erie was its front yard (for the water needed to cool the equipment), and behind it were railroad tracks to deliver the coal itself. Because Lake Erie water flows west to east, Gordon Park was downstream from power plants, and its beach quickly became washed with industrial filth.

Then came the 1930s and 1940s, when Cleveland was building the Memorial Shoreway spreading

east and west from downtown. It’s interesting to see how Edgewater and Gordon parks got treated in this era of transportation expansion.

Because of where the power plant was situated, the city decided to put the freeway right on the lakefront, and then have it swing slightly south through the park as it lined up with the freeway planned through Bratenahl.

At Edgewater Park, there was no power plant to avoid, and the railroad tracks were not as close. So the Shoreway ran far enough away from the beach that it remained intact over the years. By contrast, the freeway running next to the lake near Gordon Park effectively killed that beach and sliced the park in two.

Edgewater wasn’t immune to various pressures that also caused its decline over the years, but it was maintained, geography-wise. That made it a practical opportunity for a comeback, which is exactly what happened when the Metroparks scooped it up, cleaned it up, and just last year invested $3.3 million in a new 12,000-square-foot beach house for the westside gem.

For Gordon Park, however, there were few such reasons to invest, and the freeway made prospects of a resurgence all but impossible.

“The freeway and the power plant brutalized Gordon Park and the people stopped going there,” says Ted Ferringer, the architect who helped design the Edgewater Park beach house. “Edgewater Park would be the same way if the freeway cut through it back then like it did to the east.

“What has happened in Cleveland, especially going out on the east side, is that the property near the lake has been separated into little islands by the railroad tracks and freeways and developmental planning,” Ferringer continues. “We have an opportunity

to change things now that will have an impact for 100 years. We know now that putting a freeway on the waterfront is not a good idea. So it just makes sense that we should move it now before getting into developing that land better.”

Everyone contacted for this story who has some knowledge of urban planning and developing and the way people use parks – and the importance these days of parks with water access -- had the same opinion: that moving the freeway makes a lot of sense.

“Without moving the freeway, the [FirstEnergy] property becomes an island, and it makes its ability to

be used – and its connection to the neighborhood – much more difficult to accomplish,” says local real estate developer Dick Pace.

What Pace and others point out is that in order to do real estate development near the newly-opened power plant property – such as the St. Clair/Superior neighborhood just to the south – the area needs to have access to lakefront park property.

Most used the example of Battery Park, just south of Edgewater Park, as an example of how this could work on the east side.

“You could end up with a better development area if the freeway were moved,” Pace says. “Not to say that it is a sure deal, that neighborhoods

nearby will see some economic benefit, but it is safe to say there is a better chance of that happening if the freeway is moved.”

Andrew Brickman, principal owner of Brickhaus Partners, another big real estate development company, says the market is definitely leaning toward condo lofts and apartments that have lakefront access, or at least nearby.

“Lakefront access in Cleveland is going to be at a premium,” Brickman says. “Especially if it is close to downtown like this is. It could be a blank canvas to work with, park and development property in the same place.”

Where we are in the process

now is very early and very vague.

The city has hired a New York real estate consultant to present options, and a few of the options they have presented would move the freeway 10 to 20 yards away from where it now abuts the lake. That movement would do little more than make the walkways between the freeway and the water a bit wider than they are now.

No decision will likely be made for years. The reason for that is how complicated this all becomes when the issue of property transfers come into the picture. FirstEnergy still owns the 57-acre site of their demolished plant, and the requirements of the Environmental

Protection Agency on who is responsible for cleanup differ depending on how the land would be used. For example, land used for housing has to be cleaned up more than land used for a park.

To make this more complicated, the title transaction of the property from the electric company to the city, a private developer or a foundation could make the new titleholder responsible for cleanup as part of the deal. Prices can vary depending on who takes responsibility for the cleanup.

The difďŹ culty now is that no one knows how much cleanup there might be and how much it will cost. This is more than likely not a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Superfundâ&#x20AC;? cleanup site, but there was a lot of buried coal and chemicals on the property, as well as ashes from burning coal on the property for more than 100 years.

In a statement from the city of Cleveland, Ed Rybka, chief of regional development, left open many possibilities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The plan presented by the Green Ribbon Coalition is consistent with Mayor Frank G. Jacksonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vision and goal of improving citizen access to the lakefront and to the waterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s edge.

The City Planning Department is vetting approaches to create quality green space along the lakefront that connects with the Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s neighborhoods and residents. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goal is to build upon and better connect the current open space at Gordon Park, the Lakefront Metroparks and the Lake Erie Nature Preserve (Dike 14). Part of the Cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current lakefront planning process includes the former First Energy facility site. The Green Ribbon Coalition plan is attractive in that a large park space would be created,â&#x20AC;? Rybka continues. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The cost to move the East Shoreway, however, is signiďŹ cant.â&#x20AC;?

As usual, in a city without as many people and as much capital as it once had, the cost of creating a beautiful lakefront park and housing/ofďŹ ce development out of an industrial dump site does not come cheaply. Just moving the freeway could cost $75 to $100 million, according to some preliminary estimates. Adding a beach to where the power plants used to suck in water and dump out aquatic sludge might be tens of millions more.

Getting street connections under the railroad tracks and relocated freeway would add even more to the cost.

It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop there. No one really knows how much the developers might need in economic grants to get the process started, or how much the Metroparks might need to spend in conjoining all the properties now separated by the freeway and adding bike paths to do just that.

Oh, and one more thing. Doan Brook, the little stream that runs through Rockefeller Park, goes underground into a culvert when it hits Gordon Park near the freeway crossing. The Green Ribbon Coalition wants to resurrect Doan Brook from down under and allow it to ďŹ&#x201A;ow freely into the lake above ground near the nature preserve. Like the rest of the parts to this project â&#x20AC;&#x201C; saving a park, moving a freeway, cleaning up centuries of detritus, building a beach â&#x20AC;&#x201C; no one really knows how much it costs to make a dead stream real again.

If you do the math outside of the dollars and cents, you can see more clearly exactly what moving the freeway does in terms of acres. As it currently exists, there are three separate properties, because of the freeway, totaling 129 acres. Only 60 of those are on the lake. Move the freeway south, and you create 160

That doesn’t even include the 88 acres of the Lakefront Nature Preserve, which would also be connected to the park property.

What the freeway move would mean, in real terms, is that one could stand where the Gordon Park baseball diamonds are now and walk directly to the lake with grass underfoot the whole way. To get there now, one would have to drive their car down East 72nd Street to hit water from the ball diamonds, or walk across the pedestrian bridge, overgrown with weeds and bearing every indication of neglect, over the freeway.

Grace Gallucci is executive director for the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA), and she might hold the key to how this is all sorted out. NOACA is the clearinghouse for many transportation projects in five Northeast Ohio counties (Lorain, Geauga, Cuyahoga, Lake, and Medina) and has 45 members from those counties on its board.

This summer, NOACA approved $15.8 billion worth of transportation projects over the

next 23 years. So how would this affect a 1.5-mile freeway move plan that is not on that list?

“It’s entirely possible that

something like this could be added in to long-range planning as either a tradeoff, or because we are ďŹ nding we are savings funds because of the cost reduction on another project,â&#x20AC;? Gallucci says.

In other words, maybe NOACA ďŹ nds that the $278 million to replace decks of the I-480 bridges and construct a third bridge is not needed as much as they thought, and the cost of the project goes down to $200 million. Then NOACAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s board could decide to use those funds for something else, like a freeway relocation near a park on Clevelandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s east side.

Gallucci said NOACA is going to complete a study, which is expected to be ďŹ nished in the next month, â&#x20AC;&#x153;to see if there are merits to the ideaâ&#x20AC;? of moving the freeway.

But even if NOACA ďŹ nds â&#x20AC;&#x153;meritâ&#x20AC;? to moving the freeway, there are a number of hoops this project would have to jump through to get it done. Among them: the city of Cleveland would have to support the freeway move completely; the ďŹ ve-county NOACA board members would have to approve it, perhaps over their own projects; the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration would have to weigh in; and NOACA would have to decide whether an inner-city park project makes more sense to fund with its limited resources than a new freeway interchange out in sprawl land. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We will be looking at this in the concept of many things, trafďŹ c and safety certainly, along with perhaps that one of the main reasons of doing this is to open up this property to park land,â&#x20AC;? Gallucci says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make policy of land uses but we certainly look at things like this for transportation connection issues. There is truth to the statement that the east side doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have really true lakefront access and the transportation design may have something to do with that.â&#x20AC;?

As Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m riding my bike north on MLK Dr. through the cultural gardens, I see a seven-foot tall Mother Teresa blessing me from the Albanian garden as I ride by. I think of what this saint once said: â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of the greatest diseases is to be nobody to anybody.â&#x20AC;? Cleveland City Councilman Zack Reed says something similar, that Gordon Park was â&#x20AC;&#x153;neglected to everybody.â&#x20AC;?

The neglect does become very apparent as you move out of Rockefeller Park. Just past

mother Teresa, the sidewalk ends. Doan Brook ďŹ&#x201A;ows under the Schweinfurth arching railroad bridge. There is no car or bike entrance to the baseball ďŹ elds on your left; in front of you there are no bike lanes any more.

As you move farther north, toward the lake, you ďŹ nd yourself in a mess of freeway entrance and exit ramps, Lakeshore Boulevard twisting through this mess, and no real hint that this is a park at all. More concrete than grass, more parking spaces than places to ďŹ sh, and certainly no places to even get your toes wet.

It is quite odd in some respect, but these two parks that were connected by design in the early 20th century, and celebrated by the cognoscenti of its time as great urban planning and progressive thinking, are now unconnected and have no relationship to each other.

It gets one thinking about why that is. There are many reasons, of course, but the core reason is very simple: Freeways and cars and railroad tracks and trains and electricity and power plants have always held prominence over people going to a park and taking a swim in Cleveland. Especially if the people who want to dip their toes in the lake donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have much money.

At least thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been during most of Clevelandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history.

But then, instead, you maybe think of William A. Stinchcomb, that early 20th century city engineer and architect who created the Emerald Necklace and Metroparks, which we so dearly treasure today. And maybe you heed his words from back in 1929, when great parks for the masses counted, and maybe you see some historical value in moving the freeway from where it is now and tackling something wildly ambitious for the good of the people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Natural resources are the things which Nature gives us . . . forests, streams, lakes, fresh air -- all of these are great resources and their recreational value to city dwellers far exceeds their commercial value as timber to be cut down and water power to be harnessed by industry.â&#x20AC;?

Stinchcomb signed the paperwork for Gordon Park in 1902. Maybe, a century later, Cleveland will again listen to his wise words.

An Artist Talk In conjunction with her current exhibition at Zygote Press, the organization hosts an artist talk with Laura Ruth Bidwell from 10 a.m. to noon today. During an artist residency at Zygote Press, Bidwell has created a new series dubbed Mondegreen.

A mondegreen is a mishearing of words or phrases, and Bidwell’s new body of work references a childhood mis-hearing of lyrics to Eartha Kitt’s “C’est Si Bon,” as well as the unreliability of memory. Along with her husband Fred, Bidwell is the cofounder of Transformer Station. She studied painting at the University of Akron, and after a career as a graphic designer in advertising, works on photography, video and on-demand book projects. Mondegreen remains on view at Zygote Press through Nov. 11.

The Cleveland Bazaar Formerly known as the Bazaar Bizarre Cleveland, the Cleveland Bazaar is the longest-running indie craft show in Northeast Ohio. FROM TIME IMMEMORIAL Notes on the industrial Zen of Dawn Tekler

By Dott von Schneider ENCAUSTIC PAINTING IS ONE of the oldest artistic methods out there in the sport of eyeball excursions. The Egyptians employed this technique in the Fayum mummy portraits.

It has also been noted that the ancient Greeks would use wax in sealing their ships’ hulls, then, as pigments were added, they employed this technique to paint their warships.

This slow and methodic procedure is exceptionally labor intensive. Using hot wax (typically beeswax and adding colored pigment, an artist applies his or her own alchemic concoction to either wood or any other acceptable surface. Much like popular painting media, it can be manipulated from transparent to opaque and lightweight to heavy depending on how many layers are applied. It is more immediate, however, and once the wax has cooled it becomes hard and impermeable.

As I walk through the entryway of Dawn Tekler’s studio/gallery, the smell of melted wax intoxicates the air with its comforting and nostalgic perfume. The hot plate is on her workbench. It is Friday night and she will be working nonstop, building stories upon each wax stratum.

Tekler hasn’t always worked in

this medium. The artist earned her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art with a major in photography and minor in video and film history. She would photograph objects in people’s homes. Her interest rested in documenting the surroundings -- to investigate, but not invade.

“There is an intimate disconnect,” she says, but she couldn’t capture what she wanted like she now can with buildings and structures.

Subsequently her photographs evolved, as did her approach to material.

“Early on in my work I started — Dawn deconstructing photographs, adding various collage materials and encaustic wax. “I’m drawn to the idea of encasing a subject to be studied at a later date.”

We discuss our very different approaches to subject matter. With my own artwork there is a tactile understanding from gathering soils and colors from various, but

mostly desert locales; for Tekler it is the aura reflected off the waters that bejewel Cleveland’s industrial landscape and the artist certainly has the tools to transcribe those experiences.

The painter explains, “For me it’s more about the energy, the sky and the elements, the breeze and the moment. I have to focus in order to translate that into my art.” With the voyeuristic approach to her work, Tekler again investigates, but does not invade, bringing back the energy, sky and the elements to her studio.

Her focus isn’t solely born of artistic intent; Tekler it also to keep her from falling off her paddle board into the lake as she inhales and sketches her surroundings. She brings a waterproof bag that holds her sketchbook, which she always has with her on these excursions.

forces me to be present in the moment. which is what my yoga training has also enforced. [With painting] all these practices are starting to weave together.”

Standing in front of Tekler’s paintings we relive the vantage point the artist has intended for us to receive. The quality and subject matter combine to create a sort of industrial Zen. “It’s what every artist wants but they use their own words,” she says. “Everyone creates art for the same reason and it’s gets to the end goal and how they get there is their own personal journey and what makes the art so powerful.”

Asking if other people see things (as in shapes or personages) in her work that she doesn’t, Tekler responds that if they do it doesn’t resonate with her as much as when they see another detail. We finish our visit on this note from the artist, “It is my hope, it is my goal that people see growth in my art not only in my technical ability but also in my emotion and my feeling and the time in my moment that I felt really powerful and I think that that comes out in the work.” We think so too.

PIXEL PEOPLE Hologram versions of family members chat up the living in Marjorie Prime

By Christine Howey MANY OF US HAVE FRIENDS named Siri and Alexa, helpful voiceonly assistants who are always available to answer questions in a flash and help us navigate our days. These digital creations of the Apple and Amazon mega-universes are becoming omnipresent in a certain segment of the world that is plugged in and loving it.

But imagine the time (probably not too long into the future), when Siri and Alexa, and others like them, acquire a life-size visual presence via hologram technology, so that they can sit across from us, smiling and ready to do our bidding. At that point, the relationship will become much more personal, making it gratifying on some level and deeply creepy on another.

This is part of the concept behind Marjorie Prime by Jordan Harrison, now being given an exceptional production at Dobama Theatre. When we meet 85-year-old Marjorie, she is sitting in a mildly futuristic room with a young man named Walter of about 30. Through oblique references in the dialog, we learn that Walter is actually a “prime,” a hologram of Marjorie’s long-deceased husband, as he looked some 50 years earlier. He’s a computergenerated repository of all of Marjorie’s

memories of Walter, which have been downloaded into Walter’s memory bank, so she can talk with and relate to this near-version of husband.

In this way, Marjorie Prime enters the almost-here science fiction world trod by the outstanding British TV series Black Mirror (streaming now on Netflix), in which contemporary human beings are confronted with slight but powerful sci-fi tweaks to their existence. In the case of Marjorie, who lives with her middleage daughter Tess and her son-in-law Jon, she finds comfort conversing with the image of Walter even though his still-developing memory runs into data dead-ends now and then.

Written in a spare, almost poetic

for us as individuals than losing the ability to remember who we are, what we’ve done, whom we love.

As the 90-minute play progresses, it dives deeper into this subject as a couple other “primes” show up, each one altering and increasing the stakes for everyone involved. And these layers are revealed with devastating precision thanks to the fine four-person cast under the deft direction of Shannon Sindelar.

In the title role, Cleveland theater icon Dorothy Silver captures the full character of this woman with remarkably few words. We see Marjorie’s feisty, curmudgeonly side as well as aspects of the impish, sensual woman she once was—even as some memory fragments slip from her grasp. But the most compelling part of Silver’s performance happens later, after Marjorie’s transition from one state of being into another.

style, the play gradually reveals how dependent all of us are on a functioning memory to define our humanity. As far too many people have experienced, when memory leaves the mind of a friend or loved one, through disease or some other cause, that person essentially ceases to exist. And there are few more terrifying thoughts

when a person is actually nothing more than a collection of pixels arranged in space. And this reflects one of the themes that Harrison touches on, the idea that all of us carbon-based life forms are nothing more than molecules floating about, asserting our fragile humanity by being able to incorporate memory into

our daily lives. Without that, we are just pixels on parade ourselves.

As Tess, Derdriu Ring flashes with the kind of edgy attitude that seems a direct genetic link to Marjorie. And also like her mother, Tess’s transition later on feels particularly poignant as she tries to help her husband. Steve Sawicki plays Jon as a seemingly bland, supportive man with just the right amount of ambiguity, never revealing whether Jon is a saint or just trying to make it through the day.

This is one of the rare times when the enormous Dobama stage seems perfectly right for a small play. As designed by Jill Davis, the set is a vast and open expanse, registering both as somewhat futuristic home design while giving the characters—real and “digitally-conjured”—the space to confront their own demons from the past as well as the present.

On one hand, one could wish for a more dramatic confrontation between these people as some of them evolve from one form to another. Surely, such an experience would generate passions of some sort, and those are notably missing in this rather sterile piece.

But the elegance of Harrison’s exposition-free writing and the finely modulated performances exert a quiet drama all their own. If you don’t find yourself mulling that over as you leave, you’d better check the status of your own humanity.

MOVIES HATCHET JOB Writer-director Adam Green returns to his infamous horror trilogy

By Jeff Niesel WRITER-DIRECTOR ADAM GREEN says that after Hatchet III came out in 2013, he was “done” with his Hatchet horror trilogy and had no intention of revisiting the series. In fact, he’d even become “disenchanted” with filmmaking.

“If you were to ask [filmmakers] George Romero or Wes Craven, they all created these things that became very big,” he says in a recent phone interview. “But they never got anything for it. I would see the [Hatchet] comic books and Halloween masks and wonder how I have never gotten a dime. I was starting to hate it.”

Then, he went through what he describes as “a horribly dark period” of his life during which a friend overdosed on heroin and died. Green also filed for divorce, and then his friend Craven died.

“When [Craven] died, everyone started calling each other,” he says.

“The common feeling among my generation was that we haven’t done anything that mattered. We couldn’t compare to the guys we idolized.”

Two months after that, Romero asked him to moderate a panel. At the end of the panel, he put his arm around Green and gave him so advice on how to soldier through setbacks.

“He said I have to be crazy if I don’t see that Hatchet is that [special] thing,” Green says.

And with that, Green set out to create Victor Crowley, a sequel that takes place ten years after Hatchet III. The film, which screens at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the Capitol Theatre, centers on Andrew Yong (Parry Shen), the lone survivor of a 2007 incident in which 49 people were torn to pieces in Louisiana’s Honey Island Swamp. Young claims that Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder) was responsible for the massacre.

When Crowley is mistakenly resurrected, Andrew must face the man.

Green will attend the screening at the Capitol and be on hand for a Q&A afterward.

Green says that Hodder, the veteran horror film actor who played Victor in the previous films, will continue to

play Victor as long as he has a say over the matter.

The setting is significant. Years after the killing took place at Honey Island Swamp, the place has become a theme park.

“That’s a commentary on our society and the way we celebrate serial killers,” Green says of the setting. “In the film, there’s a group of filmmakers trying to make a mock trailer to raise money, which is what we [literally] did to make the first [Hatchet film].”

Much of the movie takes place inside an airplane, and Green says that challenged his skills as a writer.

“Because of the claustrophobic setting, you have to work on the characters,” he says. “That’s added a layer of suspense to this one that the other films didn’t have. The other ones weren’t scary. They were fun and violent and gory. This one has some great scares in it. I see people [in the audience] cowering and covering their eyes. It’s something new for the series.

I can’t wait to get on the road and see how people react.”

SPOTLIGHT: THE FLORIDA PROJECT THE FLORIDA PROJECT, THE NEW film from director and co-writer Sean Baker (Tangerine) that opens on Friday at the Cedar Lee Theatre, has created plenty of buzz at prestigious film festivals like Cannes and Toronto.

Shot on the tourist strip of U.S. Highway 192 in Kissimmee, Florida, the film follows a single mom, Halley (Bria Vinaite), and her daughter, Moonee (Brooklynn Prince), as they eke out a semi-homeless existence while staying at the Magic Castle, a garishly purple run-down motel.

The film isn’t going to receive many appreciation awards from tourism groups like Visit Florida, but its humanist depiction of families on the fringe of society – an experience that is too often erased from the narrative we tell ourselves about the place where we live – makes it essential viewing.

It opens on Friday at the Cedar Lee Theatre.

The film is delivered mainly from the perspective of Moonee,

an adorable young girl who runs around the premises of the Magic Castle and neighboring hotels with her friends Scooty (Christopher Rivera) and Jancey (Valeria Cotto).

Almost completely unsupervised, the trio spend their summer spitting off railings, climbing trees, sneaking into abandoned condos and spying on grown-ups. The kids in these motels, whose families are often paying week-to-week to have a roof over their heads, are exposed to more of the seedy side of life than most children their age, including violence and drug use from the adults around them. But their spirits are still those of children, finding adventure and play – and sugar – wherever they can.

But the adult world is always there, even if Moonee can’t see it. “We’re going to take bikini pictures,” Halley tells Moonee after her perfume-selling hustle is shut down by a security guard at a neighboring swanky resort. Moonee may think it’s a fun

game, but an adult audience knows that something’s up when Halley takes a split second to make sure Moonee’s not reflected in the mirror as she takes a picture of her mom pouting at the camera in a skimpy bathing suit. Moonee’s frequent extended bath time play sessions – accompanied by a radio playing full-blast – are interrupted one night when a man walks into the bathroom as we hear Halley yelling at him.

Willem Dafoe plays Bobby, the manager of the Magic Castle, in a performance that seems predestined for a Best Supporting Actor nomination. An inversion of his trademark over-the-top performances in films like The Boondock Saints or Shadow of the Vampire, Dafoe’s Bobby is a gentle soul – a Florida Man in all the best ways – who brings a small semblance of order to the lives of the children who often fall under his supervision.

Despite hints that there’s a history

of conflict within his own family, he sets boundaries for the kids even as he butts heads with Halley, whose deep-set combativeness threatens to get her and her daughter kicked out of the motel.

The title of the film is actually a reference to the codename that Walt Disney had for Walt Disney World back when it was in the planning phases – back when he and the Disney corporation used dummy companies to buy up large tracts of land in an attempt to secure the cheapest possible per-acre price.

Baker’s film could be read as an indictment of the economic impact that a tourist economy has on the people who live in the area, but that would be a too-simplistic interpretation of a tragically beautiful film. —Thaddeus McCollum

EAT PUTTIN’ ON THE… TURN Bar + Kitchen brings upgraded food and looks to the Ritz

By Douglas Trattner DESPITE WORLD-CLASS CULINARY talent, impeccable service and posh surroundings, Muse has always struggled to attract diners who were not sleeping at the Cleveland RitzCarlton. Impediments like pricey valet parking, a sixth-floor address and a conservative menu – not to mention the explosion of competition since Muse opened its doors a decade ago – prevented the eatery from becoming a truly local restaurant.

The goal of TURN Bar + Kitchen, which debuts Friday, Oct. 27, is to completely change perceptions about dining at the swanky hotel, unravelling decades-old stereotypes while attracting a fresh new clientele. As part of a multi-milliondollar hotel-wide renovation that has taken 18 months to complete, TURN is destined to become the social nucleus of the entire facility.

More than a straightforward concept and menu rebranding, TURN was built from the studs in and the ground up in the former home of the Lobby Lounge. Sharing the sixth floor with reception, the open-concept bar, restaurant and gathering spot is a complete 180-degree turn, pun intended, from what has long been the staid habitat of cucumber sandwiches and steaming pots of tea.

“The Lobby Lounge of the past was grandma’s living room, with flowered chairs, dead ancestors on the walls, and naval battle paintings,” explains executive chef Richard Arnoldi. “That’s all gone.

TURN is going to be very modern and sociable. I want this space to be a freestanding restaurant that just happens to be six floors higher than most typical restaurants.”

Separated from reception by a glassy two-sided fireplace, and anchored at the other end by a dramatic, illuminated onyx bar, the contemporary space seats 90 guests at a combination of traditional and soft seating. Whereas Muse is tucked away in a windowless corner of the hotel, TURN boasts a wall of windows that better connects guests and visitors to diurnal rhythms. The space will evolve over the course the day to suit peoples’ moods and needs, from coffee and breakfast

in the morning, to a mid-afternoon snack, to a nightcap before turning in. Six different “mood periods” will be achieved through various combinations of lighting, music, food and drink.

Second only to the room, the menu is the biggest departure from the repast of Muse, which will become private event space once the new restaurant opens. In place of a Continental cuisine that took its cues from abroad, TURN trains its gaze

on its surrounding neighbors and neighborhoods for inspiration.

“When I stand in the epicenter of this city, which I consider to be this building here, everywhere I turn, all the neighborhoods that are around, there’s something new for me to taste,” says the chef, with emphasis on turn. “I’ve lived all over the world and I think this is one of the most unique culinary scenes because there are such little blocks of ethnicity and cultural diversity that

from the Far East to the East Side, a comforting bowl of matzo bowl soup expands the cultural embrace.

Our Eastern European roots are represented by an uber-crisp and wafer-thin chicken schnitzel, kept on the light side thanks to a green salad with tender potatoes in a bright mustard vinaigrette. A dry-aged beef filet is gilded with a link of smoked sausage from Dohar Meats at the West Side Market. While the ahi tuna certainly isn’t local, its

preparation is intended to satisfy a Midwesterner’s craving for meat.

The sandwich roster is like a Lolly the Trolley ride through town, with pit stops for corned beef, falafel and Polish Boys, all of which get the Ritz treatment.

For dessert, there’s Slavic Village paczki, Little Italy cassata cake and a nostalgia-inducing root beer float made with Mitchell’s vanilla ice cream and served in a salted caramel pretzel rimmed glass.

At the bar, there’s been a big push to bring the cocktail program into the modern era by looking backwards. Classics like daiquiris, punches and Sazeracs have been dusted off, reimagined and sharpened. Three interactive cocktails are sure to draw the attention of nearby tipplers. Both at the bar and at your table, Manhattans and Old Fashioneds are infused before one’s very eyes with wood smoke in a theatrical feat of pyrotechnics. Local breweries are represented on the beer list.

SWEET LOCAL Skip the convenient store and stock up for Halloween at one of these local sweet shops

By Billy Hallal HALLOWEEN DRAWS NEAR, AND soon adults across America will be schlepping out to big box stores and pharmacies to load up on candy. But Clevelanders need not settle for the same bags of bite-sized Snickers every year. The Greater Cleveland area plays host to a number of locally owned sweets shops that will elevate your trick-or-treat game (or get something for yourself; we won’t judge).

The sweets shop model may seem antiquated, but the businesses here are run on more than just novelty and nostalgia.

Rocket Fizz (530 Euclid Ave., 216-505-5225, rocketfizz.com), an independently operated branch of a California store, took over the closed Radio Shack at East 6th and Euclid in the spring of 2015. Owners Susan and Robert Hale have turned this prime real estate into a delightful downtown haven for sweet-heads.

Rocket Fizz’s specialty is variety.

They have well over 1,000 varieties of candy, from old-fashioned wax lips to exotic products from Europe and Asia. There’s even a chocolate-covered bugs section. Don’t think it’s just for the shock value; according to Susan, people buy them all the time.

The Hales have considered opening a second location in the area, but those plans could be put on hold for a while.

On Nov. 7, Susan’s name will be on the ballot for mayor of Cuyahoga Falls.

When Elisabeth Sapell began looking for rental space for a candy store, she could hardly find a building that would lease to her. Five years on, All City Candy (746 Richmond Rd., Richmond Hts., 216-487-7070, allcitycandy.com) is thriving in Richmond Heights, and this week marks the opening of their second location in Mentor.

All City’s selection includes a solid

oldies aisle, five-pound gummy bears and a picturesque selection of handdipped chocolates (their wonderfully redundant Cookies-and-Cream-dipped Oreo is a highlight). They offer a candy buffet catering service which will, with its attractively-packaged offerings, add a veneer of class to a room full of adults stuffing their faces with sweets.

Jeff Campbell’s father had run a series of popcorn shops in malls across Northeast Ohio. Once those stores were bought out, Campbell decided to give them new life as a stall at the West Side Market. Campbell’s Sweets Factory (2084 W. 25th St., 216-965-0451, campbellssweets.com) now offers popcorn, cupcakes, and hand-dipped chocolates, and has added locations in Lakewood and Ohio City to its portfolio. A third will open in downtown’s Arcade on Nov. 14.

There’s an environmental component to Campbell’s too: the company works with Ohio farmers to supply corn for their business, and has made a Keep Cleveland Sweet pledge to not use GMOs in their products.

We would be remiss not to mention the largest candy store in North America. b.a. Sweetie’s (6770 Brookpark Rd., 216-739-2244, sweetiescandy.com) started as a basement candy distributing operation in the 1950s. Today, it’s a 40,000-foot warehouse with an attached miniature golf course. Sweetie’s recently added an old-timey Soda Shoppe to the premises.

Sweetie’s warehouse can be overwhelming, and their mascot is a little creepy. But creepiness and candy are what the season’s all about.

FOLLOWING THIS PAST SUNDAY’S brunch service, Graffiti Social Kitchen (1261 W. 76th St.) closed its doors. The restaurant, operated

by Brian Okin and Adam Bostwick, took over the former Reddstone space in Detroit Shoreway just under three years ago. The reasons behind the closure are two-fold, the owner says.

“Winter is a slow season over there, so we saw that coming,” explains Okin. “But I seriously believe in our meatball concept.

I don’t want to be the guy who spreads himself so thin that I don’t do it right – and it just makes sense to do it right now.”

This time last year Okin, in partnership with Stefan Was, announced plans to launch Polpetta at Porco, a meatball-themed concept that operates within the four walls of Porco Lounge and Tiki Room.

The team greatly improved the small bar kitchen to accommodate the new concept. From the start, the aim was to establish proof of concept and grow from there.

“Obviously, the Porco kitchen is small and the focus there isn’t the food,” Okin adds. “It was a way to test and perfect the concept for future brick-and-mortar locations.

With Cork and Cleaver and Dinner in the Dark, we couldn’t physically be at Porco that often. We want to change that as we move forward with that concept.”

Plans already are in the works to open that brick-and-mortar location, notes Okin, which might happen in the coming weeks or months.

The timing also corresponds with Cork and Cleaver’s busiest time of year, Okin explains, as that suburban eatery picks up in the cooler months as residents tend to stay closer to home.

2017 officially will forever be referred to as The Year of the Donut. In recent months we’ve welcomed the arrival of City Girl Donuts in Rocky River and Brewnuts in Detroit Shoreway. In

the coming weeks, we’ll say hello to Bigmouth Donut Co., which will take the place of Young Kings record store (1418 W 29th St.) in the Hingetown area of Ohio City.

Courtney Bonning, chef-owner of the former Bonbon Cafe in Ohio City, is teaming up with Kelly Brewer, formerly with the Cleveland Visitors Bureau and Ritz-Carlton to open the Bigmouth Donut Company.

Together they will launch “a truly unique donut experience never seen before by the donut-craving masses.”

The pair share a love of donuts and a simpatico philosophy that dictates that donuts should always be handcrafted from scratch using the finest ingredients and served hot and fresh. These particular confections, as the name implies, will be “a little fatter than the normal donut.”

“We believe that a great donut is not one that is dipped in chocolate and then topped with some candy,” Brewer explains. “We believe that a finely made donut has four distinct and recognizable components: the dough, the filling, the glaze or finish, and the toppings. All four of these components complement each other to bring a combined flavor that can’t be described until people try them.”

During extensive cross-country donut R&D, the team uncovered a certain unwavering feature present at all great donut shops: the owners all loved talking about donuts, which proved helpful to Brewer and Bonning’s new venture.

“We learned a lot and had a lot of fun researching donuts, and we continue to find great donut shops across the county,” reports Bonning. “Like these great donut shops, we love talking about donuts. We love seeing other people get excited about donuts. Donuts always make people smile. We will provide that experience in our stores and also throughout the area and a lot of great events this fall.”

STILL GROOVIES AFTER ALL THESE YEARS Guitarist Cyril Jordan and singer Chris Wilson reflect on the garage rock band’s remarkable legacy

By Jeff Niesel IN 2013, FLAMIN’ GROOVIES guitarist Cyril Jordan and charismatic lead singer Chris Wilson reunited after three decades to play sold out tours in Japan and Australia. They came through Cleveland that year too.

After getting their musical sea legs back, the guys have now released Fantastic Plastic, their first studio release in more than a decade, and the first album to feature both Jordan and Wilson in 38 years.

The Stones-like opening song, “What the Hell’s Goin’ On,” serves as a swaggering indictment of our times.

The album also capably shows off the band’s power pop sensibilities with tunes such as “End of the World” and “She Loves Me.” In separate phone interviews, Wilson and Jordan spoke about the garage rock band’s lengthy history that dates back to the ‘60s.

The group performs at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Beachland Ballroom.

The band formed in San Francisco in the 1960s. What was the music scene like there at that time?

Jordan: There was a place on Fisherman’s Wharf, and we’d see William Penn and his Pals play there.

They were a Paul Revere and the Raiders copy. They had the coats and the hats, and they played “Louie Louie” and stuff like that. They were part of a garage scene that sprang out of the high school dance scene. There were bands like the Count Five. They’re probably one of the only ones that got all the way into the charts. What was cool about the scene back then was that it would go through different phases and morph into something else.

When Chris joined the band in 1971, the band went in a new direction. Talk about the shift that took place.

Wilson: I was getting ready to leave San Francisco when Cyril and George

[Alexander] and Danny [Mihm] sat me down and said [singer] Roy [Loney] had given notice. They had a bunch of gigs coming up. They said, “We need somebody. You fit the bill. Would you like to be in the band?” I thought, “What the hell.” I gave them my assent and packed up my gear from where I was sleeping on the floor and got a Murphy bed at Danny’s house. Then, I moved in with Cyril and his mom, who kind of became my mom. I was there for the next eight years. In those days, the sound didn’t change right away.

The change slowly came as Cyril and I started to find our feet as songwriters.

That didn’t happen until 1972. We’d written a few things back then, including, “Let Me Rock,” which is on the new album. Shake Some Action was really the beginning of our sound.

Jordan: There was this weird notion that we changed when Roy [Loney] left, but even after he left, we

were doing “Slow Death” and there was still an R&B side to our sound.

Because Chris and I could sing like the Everly Brothers, we could do these different tunes that had nice harmonies that wasn’t possible with the lineup we had with Roy. The tools changed. We got better tools and I’ll be damned if we weren’t going to use them. Chris is an incredible mimic. He can do Daffy Duck and Little Richard.

He can do everybody. I thought I could write a Rolling Stones-type song and we can have a Jagger-type vocals. He was an incredible tool of talent. I try to explain that the Flamin’ Groovies format is basically a showcase for all their different talents. At this point in time, I look at the band, because of how many members have been in it and left, that I found these people and brought them into the band. I even brought Danny into the band. MUSIC the music of the band since Flamingo.

That’s when I really kicked in. Roy and I drove back from L.A. one night and wrote like eight songs on the drive back. By the time we got to San Francisco, we had an entire album.

What did you like about working with Dave Edmunds?

Wilson: Dave was fantastic. We were over at our pot dealer’s house and we’d be playing records and chatting and doing what not. Cyril had brought [the Edmunds single] “I Hear You Knocking.’” The guitar sound just blew me away. It just wiped me out. I went, “That’s what I want to sound like.

That’s the kind of music I want to do.”

Folk rocky but powerful as shit with lots of guitars, and Cyril said, “That’s me too.”

Jordan: It was surreal. I’m still pinching myself. It was like it was too fuckin’ good to be true. We heard [his] “I Hear You Knocking,’” and we were like, “Holy shit. What the fuck is this?” I found out it was cut at this place called Rockfield. I immediately realized that Rockfield had a sound as unique as Sun Records or Goldstar, where Phil Spector worked. I told them we had to go there. Everyone laughed at me. Three years later, I pulled it off.

I went to London and did a deal with United Artists. He had set up these interviews with Melody Maker and these other magazines. They asked me who was going to produce the album. I told all these guys that Dave Edmunds was going to produce us. Edmunds hadn’t been notified. He didn’t find out until the afternoon of the session when he read about in Melody Maker. He went to the studio and the owner told him that he was producing us.

Most of the songs on the new album are new ones?

Wilson: Most of the songs are new.

They were recorded in the last three years. Their collaborations mostly with Cyril and I. Cryil wrote some of

Magic Christian, I never wrote so much in life. I was playing the guitar five hours a night. We cut about 50 originals. We only released about half of them. There’s another 25 without vocals and lyrics. I would write a song that was just for the Flamin’ Groovies, but I’d shelve it. All of a sudden, we were forced to put out the album out and did a deal with Severn.

We used two session guys that work with the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

We had to finish it and I took one of the shelved Magic Christian tracks, which is the instrumental. I shelved it because it was too Flamin’ Groovies like. It’s the first album that was kind of a hash job. This album took three years because people don’t live in San Francisco anymore. The only time we could record was when we were rehearsing for a tour.

Where did you go to record Fantastic Plastic and what was the experience like?

Wilson: We recorded at Studio D in Sausalito with our produce Joel Jaffe, who has a couple of Grammys under his belt. He’s a wonderful fellow to work with. Nothing but helpful.

There wasn’t anything we needed that we couldn’t get. It worked out really well. I’m extremely happy with how it turned out. I haven’t been this happy with anything I’ve recorded in many years. I’ve done lots of records with other bands too, but I think there’s something special in a lot of these songs.

Do you anticipate it’ll be another 14 years until you release your next studio album?

Wilson: I certainly hope not. You never know. I can’t see myself at 77 but then again I hope I still am making records at 77 if the Lord gives me the wherewithal to stick around ’til then.

Jordan: I don’t know. I don’t think I’ll be around that long. I had polio when I was a kid. I was going to die.

I had six months to live but survived it. It gave me this idea that every day I could die, I could drop dead. Now that I’m old it’s glaring me in the face.

MUSIC WILD AT HEART Northeast Ohio native Suzanne Santo exorcises a few demons on her solo debut

By Jeff Niesel AFTER MOVING FROM LOS Angeles to Nashville and living in the Music City for several years, singer-songwriter Suzanne Santo, a Northeast Ohio native who plays in the twangy alt-country duo HoneyHoney, moved back to Los Angeles.

She loosely documents the life changes she’s recently experienced on her solo debut, Ruby Red. “I’ve been back in L.A. for over two years,” she says via phone from L.A. She performs at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Music Box Supper Club, where she opens for Willie Watson. “Nashville just wasn’t for me. Everyone is in the music industry, so it gets annoying after a little while. There’s not a lot of culture there. I like different people and food, and I was tormented by allergies there. It’s a moldy valley. I was always sick and getting bit by mosquitos. I was like, ‘Fuck this.

I’m moving.’ So I moved back to Los Angeles.”

Since forming in 2006, HoneyHoney has released three albums. Those albums have established it as a major act in the Americana/alt-country scene. But Santo says the last HoneyHoney record really “burned” the band out, so she and bandmate Benjamin Jaffe decided to take some time away from the group. Since Santo had met producer Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, All Time Low) last year, she thought he could help her whip some songs she’d written into a solo album. Her instincts proved correct. Ruby Red features a terrific collection of songs that veer from HoneyHoney’s alt-country approach.

“It was such a blast working with [Walker],” says Santo. “It worked itself out. Ben and I had both been wanting to do solo projects for a while. It helped that Butch came into my world and wanted to make this album.”

Santo worked with Walker at his Santa Monica studio, a space she found particularly conducive to letting her explore her creativity.

“It was my favorite place to

work,” she says. “It has natural light. It’s an old garage. We would work from noon to 8. It was perfect.

You’re not super burnt out. I’m not into working all through the night.

It was great. I named my record after his studio. There’s something to be said about the spaces we work in. A lot of studios are like caves and you get in there and it’s immediately dark. I get tired in settings like that. I can’t say I’ve done my best work in a cave. I loved working at Ruby Red.” One of the album’s many highlights, “Ghost in My Bed” recalls R.E.M.’s hit “Losing My Religion” with its moody vocals, folk-y acoustic guitars and chirping strings.

“There’s a journalist that totally came up with their own idea and wrote an article about it and said it’s about being in a relationship with an alcoholic,” she says. “That’s not true at all. I’ve never been in a relationship with an alcoholic. It’s about being destructive and then being accountable for it. It’s loosely inspired by the Stevie Nicks lyrics ‘Don’t blame it on me/Blame it on my wild heart.’ Right when I moved back to L.A., I was recalibrating my life and I could feel the ghosts of my vices.”

The sparse piano ballad “Best Out of Me” represents one of the album’s lighter moments.

“Just about every song has this common thread of accountability and reconciliation and sifting

common serial killer disorders, for example. I’m fascinated by almostgenetic hand-me-downs of anger or sadness or impulsiveness. I look at myself and realize it’s something that’s like my grandmother or my dad and having to be pissed about it and then get over it.”

With its pounding drums and gritty guitars, “Love Fucked Up” comes across as a rousing bluesbased dirge.

“There’s a lot of sex and booze on this record,” says Santo. “That’s just a fun shit kicker song. It’s loosely inspired by dating. I’m

through parts of ourselves that aren’t savory,” says Santo. “I’m always putting in an effort to examine my choices and make sure they’re the best ones or the right ones. When they’re not, I try to figure out the not-so-great parts of myself. I’m fascinated with psychology and where things come from. It’s fascinating to learn about

trying to use my words carefully here. That one is just about lust at the nucleus.”

While HoneyHoney isn’t at work on a new album, guest appearances on the hit TBS show Guest Book have kept it plenty busy.

“We perform at the end of every episode in the strip club,” she says of Guest Book. “The music is great.

We wrote the theme song, and we’re an interesting part of the show. We just found out it got picked up for a second season. I don’t know if we’ll still be on the show, but it did a lot for us.”

Santo says Jaffe’s forthcoming solo effort is “so good,” and she says she’s happy to help promote the effort.

“He’s looking to release it later this year,” he says. “He likes to shoot from the hip. He’s releasing content through social media that’s worth checking out. Right now, giving each other out solo projects their due is important. We’re PRing for each other, which is cool.”

Santo says her live show at the Music Box won’t be a tepid affair.

Rather, it’ll feature “a lot of rock n’ roll.”

“There’s a good split of midtempo songs and ballads,” she says.

“There’s great guitar riffs, and I take my fiddle and put it through a fuzz pedal for ‘Blood on Your Knees.’ It’s one of the most fun things to play. It’s been great.”

MUSIC THE COMEBACK KIDS Fall Out Boy’s arena tour builds momentum for its forthcoming album, Mania

By Jeff Niesel SAVE ROCK AND ROLL, THE 2013 album that emo rockers Fall Out Boy recorded with producer Butch Walker (Taylor Swift, P!nk), represented a remarkable comeback for the Chicagobased band.

The group had been on hiatus prior to its release; members reconvened in secret with Walker to lay down the tracks at his Santa Monica studio.

“Man, it was kind of crazy because we came back, and people made records differently,” says bassist Pete Wentz in a recent phone interview.

The band performs on Friday at Quicken Loans Arena as it brings the tour in support of its forthcoming album, Mania, to town. “The producers we were into made songs differently.

Butch helped us figure that out. He has this nuanced, super subtle thing.

He can understand how to make rock bands sonically relevant in the landscape of 2014 or 2016 or whenever.

It’s threading the needle, and he does it in such a graceful way. I think it’s because he’s written giant pop songs with P!nk but is a rock guy at heart.

He was the perfect guy to re-launch [our career].”

Initially, Wentz and the other members of the band played in hardcore bands before forming Fall Out Boy on a whim in 2001. The group was supposed to just be a side project, but it quickly evolved into something much bigger.

“The interesting thing about punk rock at that time was that the stages were small,” says Wentz. “It wasn’t a leap to think you could be in one of those bands. That’s how it was. We were in a million terrible bands. It was just fun. We didn’t have enough of a music scene to have strictly hardcore or punk shows. It was ska and hardcore and pop-punk. It was really diverse. Because of that, you had bands that are influenced in ways they wouldn’t have otherwise. I also think that Chicago is the bastard child city of the other cities. People overlook it, and that’s good because you can form in your own petri dish because there’s nobody paying a ton of attention.”

Thanks to hits such as “Sugar We’re Goin Down” and “Snitches and Talkers Get Stitches and Walkers,” the group had a good run throughout the early ’00s, but then it hit rock bottom

after the release of 2008’s Folie a Deux.

Fans started booing the group during live performances, and the guys decided it was best to take a break.

“I think that it was an odd time to be making music in general,” Wentz says when asked about the turmoil that led the band to nearly calling it quits. “The world became very, very pop. Pop music became dance music.

“It all got a little twisted,” he says. “Taking time off and allowing ourselves to become real life adults instead of guys who follow bodyguards through the airport was good. When you’re in a band or making a movie or whatever it is that has pop value, you want to keep the machine going. As long as the machine was going, that’s what others want. Doing a hard reset

He says the group wasn’t constructed to be on MTV’s TRL or grace the covers of music magazines.

was important. We realized we needed each other.”

Wentz says some of the songs that will appear on Mania have been in the works for some time now. One good example: singer-guitarist Patrick Stump played him a working version of “Young and Menace” a couple of summers ago.

“I thought the song seems of the

time, and we should put it out,” he says.

But the band retooled it and finally released it this year. With its soulful vocals and pulsating synthesizers, it features a flurry of dub step beats that sound like they could have come from a Skrillex song.

“We put the song out without realizing we didn’t have any other songs that were done,” says Wentz. “It started the stopwatch, so we started making lots of music. I remember looking at [singer-guitarist] Patrick [Stump], and I thought he loved it. He thought I loved it. The record was fine, but no one really loved it.”

A result, the band pushed back Mania’s release. Now, the album won’t come out until next year.

“If we keep putting out new music, it has to be something that’s great,” Wentz explains. “Otherwise, what’s the point? That’s when we wanted to take some time and make a record we really love.”

The jittery “The Last of the Real Ones,” another single from Mania, features upper-register vocals and a catchy piano riff.

“Those lyrics have been kicking around for a while at this point,” says Wentz of “The Last of the Real Ones.”

“It was one I tried to push Patrick to make on the last record. There just wasn’t a song that served it. We were driving to our producer’s house in two separate cars, and Patrick was writing in the car on the way, and those lyrics just happened to work with what he was writing.”

Wentz says that Jason Schwartzman’s character in the cult flick Rushmore inspired the tune “Champion,” an anthem for anyone who ever felt he or she didn’t fit in.

“I played sports in high school, but I was kind of a loser,” says Wentz.

“I didn’t fit the mold. That’s who that song is for. So much of life to me is about getting through the hard parts.

That’s what the song means to me.

It’s a ‘champion’ for people who don’t believe in champions.”

Wentz says the band’s concert at the Q will be an elaborate affair that he hopes will live up to fans’ expectations.

Low Cut Connie/The Yawpers/ Hamilton Handshake: Low Cut Connie singer-pianist Adam Weiner grew up in New Jersey in the ’80s and absorbed plenty of classic rock ’n’ roll in the process. He initially took piano lessons and then got the “the rock ’n’ roll and country and blues and country bug.” A stint in Memphis set him “on a path,” and he absorbed as much blues as is humanly possible. He then began playing the gay bar circuit after moving to New York. Over the years, about 15 people have come through Low Cut Connie, which came together in 2010 and now calls Philadelphia home. The band recorded its fourth studio album, Dirty Pictures (Part 1), live-toanalog tape at Ardent Studios in Memphis. It contains “Revolution Rock N Roll.” One of the year’s best singles, the tune that features a bit of barroom piano, bristles with raw energy. “Touch my body/touch my soul,” sings Weiner as the song lifts off. Elton John’s a fan of the band, and his endorsement speaks volumes to the group’s promise.

Midnight Album Release Party: Jamie Walters (aka Athenar) originally played in the local metal band Boulder before forming Midnight just over 10 years ago.

The group is just a solo project, though Walters employs a guitarist and drummer for the live shows. On Dec. 15, the highly regarded metal band will release its third album, Sweet Death and Ecstasy. Amplify Peace: Saving Syrian Lilves with Omar Offendum/Bassel & the Supernaturals/Kayem/Ronnie Malley & Turath Ensemble/DJ Bella Loki: Bassel Almadani, the singer who fronts the Chicagobased soul/funk group Bassel and the Supernaturals, has deep ties to Northeast Ohio. Born and raised in Kent, he blossomed as a songwriter here, where he regularly attended shows. After moving to Chicago a few years ago, he started listening to the music of Otis Redding, Al Green, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder; their “emotionally saturated” music inspired him to put together his own damn band, Bassel & the Supernaturals. As a first-generation Syrian-American — his parents were born and raised in Aleppo — he’s particularly troubled by the crisis happening in the country.

Now, his band along with Omar Offendum, Kayem, Ronnie Malley & Turath Ensemble and DJ Bella Loki has embarked on the Amplify Peace Tour: Saving Syrian Lives.

by Dan Savage Dear Dan, My only child is 16 years old. He was curious about sex from a very young age and very open with me, so his interest in sexual matters gave me ample opportunity to talk with him about safety and consent.

He went through a cross-dressing phase when he was small—mostly wanting to wear nail polish and try on mascara—and I felt like I navigated those waters pretty well, but his father made attempts to squelch those impulses. (He and I are divorced. He has since remarried and is less involved.) That’s the background. I’ve always accepted that he is who he is and done my best to help guide and educate him.

Then last year, I caught him trying to shoplift a pair of panties. I’m not the sort of mom who freaks out, but I made him put them back and talked to him about his actions. When I asked him why he stole them, he refused to tell me. I asked: “Did you want them to masturbate with? Did you want to wear them?” He said he wanted to try them on. I told him that if he wanted to explore, he needed to do that with a legal purchase and in the privacy of his own room. Today, I found a girl’s bra in the laundry. He says he doesn’t know whose it is or how it got there, but this isn’t my first rodeo. What on earth do I do? If I send him to a therapist and this is about being trans or cross-dressing tendencies, I’m afraid that will shame him.

However, this is now something of a criminal/ethical concern, and I want to nip that in the bud. He is in every way a wonderful human: kind, smart, funny, athletic, no drugs.

Is this just the same kid who has always been curious about sex? Or are these warning signs of some sort of sexual deviance? Please help.

He knows you’ve always accepted him for who he is (but a reminder never hurts), so if this is about his gender identity, well, you’ll have to trust that he’ll share that with you when he’s ready. But if this is about a kink, he may never share that info with you, because why on earth would he? Kinks are for sharing with lovers, not mothers.

Give your son some space, including the space to make his own mistakes. As teenage misbehavior goes, swiping a single pair of panties isn’t exactly a crime spree. If you suspect he snuck into the girls’ locker room and made off with a bra (there has to be an easier way for a guy to get his hands on a bra!), you’ll want to address that with him—not the “Why do you want a bra?” part, but the risk of getting caught, suspended, expelled, or worse. There are too many prosecutors out there looking for excuses to slap the “sex offender” label on teenagers—especially in the Bible Belt.

My hunch is you don’t have a sex offender on your hands or a kid drifting into organized crime. You have a slightly pervy teenage boy who’s curious about sex and who may, like millions of other men, have a thing for women’s undergarments.

You should emphasize the Not Okay–ness of shoplifting panties from stores or stealing bras from classmates (or the siblings of friends or Laundromats or thrift stores) and the possible consequences should he get caught—theft charges, suspension/expulsion, losing friends, coming into the sights of a sexnegative prosecutor.
