UPFRONT CLEVELAND’S PER-CAPITA HOMICIDE RATE OUTPACES CHICAGO’S

THIS WEEK

IT WAS HARD NEWS TO HEAR — harder to stomach — on what ended up as the biggest ra-ra Cleveland day of the fall (World Series game 1! Cavs get their rings!); it was also news that runs headlong against the Cleveland Comeback narrative that’s being force fed to us by everyone from CNBC to our own local biz community. But hey, you gotta look the truth in the eye: Cleveland crossed a grim milestone, racking up 100 homicides in the 2016.

The 100th homicide was a particular ugly one: On Oct. 21, police found a bag of human remains on Dribble Avenue off E. 55th Street. More bodies have fallen since, bringing the total to 109 as of Oct. 29, which puts us on on par with 2015, the second bloodiest year in the last decade.

This kind of news deserves a quick time-out to chew over the implications, especially considering we’re in the middle of a presidential rochambeau where murder stats have turned into a political football.

But Cleveland’s 2016 numbers track with a long-term trend that unfortunately puts the city in an troubling position.

Your inner Cleveland booster might be screaming right now: but we’re not as bad as Chicago! That midwestern hub, besides being the hometown of a certain soon-to-berunner-up for all the World Series marbles, has also been turned into a de facto stand-in for urban American violence. It’s a convenient place to point fi ngers, considering Chi-town’s murder count in 2015 was 478, well above cities like New York, Baltimore, and Cleveland.

But the sheer numbers don’t tell the whole story. The Trace recently

published a look at the murders per capita in 20 American cities between 2010 and 2015.

Based on that assessment, Chicago had seen 16.4 murder per every 100,000 residents. That rate is actually lower than 17 other American cities, including Cleveland. Over the same time period, Cleveland numbered 20.0 murders per 100,000 residents.

Only seven cities (New Orleans, Detroit, St. Louis, Baltimore, Oakland, Kansas City, and Cincinnati) outpaced the Cleveland rate, and we actually have a higher murder rate than places like Atlanta, Philadelphia, Memphis, Washington, D.C., and Miami.

a rising murder rate — a frequent bark coming out of a certain presidential wannabe — is both accurate but missing the point, a point that directly applies to Cleveland. The National Institute of Justice found that the murder rate across American rose 11 percent in 2015, “jumping more last year than it had in nearly half a century,” the New York Times reports.

But the push behind the jump is actually only coming from a few cities. According to the times, half the national increase has come from just seven cities: Baltimore, Chicago, Houston, Milwaukee, Nashville, Washington, and, yup, Cleveland.

mark, think about it like this: these deaths aren’t part of a national increase, we’re not passively being caught up in a tide of violence; instead, Cleveland’s rising body count is literally driving the national increase.

Sellers told Scene that the 37 troopers were pulled from all across the state on a volunteer basis. The number of troopers was determined, he said, based on the impact to regular operations.

Sellers said he hasn’t heard much in the way of protests to the OSHP’s decision to send personnel, but a Change.org petition was mounted in the immediate aftermath, addressed to Governor John Kasich. It noted, among other things, the discrepancy between the treatment of native protesters and the Oregon gunmen who occupied a Federal wildlife refuge last winter.

“The militarized police crackdown on a peaceful gathering of unarmed indigenous people in North Dakota happened on the same day,” read the petition, “as white men who carried out an armed 41-day siege of a nature preserve in Oregon were acquitted of all charges.”

The patrolmen from Ohio will be working alongside other state police and private contractors in North Dakota. One of the private outfits is called TigerSwan. It’s a security firm tied to Blackwater that has received millions of dollars in government contracts for surveillance and security work in Iraq and Afghanistan.

WEWS ANCHORS FIRED FOR ‘POLITICAL ACTIVITY’ (STANDING IN LINE FOR JAY-Z TICKETS) According to a TV industry news and gossip site, News Channel 5 morning news anchor Jackie Fernandez and weather anchor Somara Theodore were fired after posting to their social media accounts that they were standing in line to get free Jay Z tickets on company time. The Jay Z concert was in support of Hillary Clinton.

Channel 5 has already removed Fernandez’s and Theodore’s bios from their staff page.

“Insiders” advised that both women were popular with viewers, but that Scripps, Channel 5’s parent company, “had no choice” but to let them go, especially after they’d sent out a memo advising staffers not to participate in political activities before the election.

CLEVELAND GETS 150 NEW TREES The City of Cleveland announced last week that it had received a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Forest Service as part of the agencyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

With the funds, the city will plant and maintain 150 new trees in Cudell and Buckeye-Shaker, the two neighborhoods serving as pilot areas in the implementation of the Cleveland Tree Plan, launched by the city last year.

One hundred and ďŹ fty trees sounds like quite a few, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a drop in the bucket compared to the 100,000 trees that Cleveland has lost since the 1940s â&#x20AC;&#x201D; back when it was still known as the Forest City â&#x20AC;&#x201D; impacting issues as diverse as air quality and home values.

The cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collaborative plan to restore the urban canopy wants to mitigate the estimated 97 acres of canopy lost every year.

Unsurprisingly, the best way to do that is by planting trees, and every tree is a step in the right direction. If we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t plant more trees, Cleveland ofďŹ cials said last year, the city could fall to about

14 percent tree cover in 2040. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s at 19 percent now, signiďŹ cantly lower than coverage in cities like Pittsburgh (40 percent), Cincinnati (38 percent), and even New York (24 percent).

The announcement of the grant cited numerous beneďŹ ts to the upcoming plantings, among them: improved air quality; energy conservation; stormwater management; and, not to be overlooked, residents engaged in environmental stewardship activities.

SMASH-AND-GRAB THEFT RINGS IN SIGHTLINES OF POLICE, FBI Reports of a series of Cleveland police raids and arrests swept across news outlets last week, with all the raids being connected to an organized â&#x20AC;&#x153;ringâ&#x20AC;? of ATM â&#x20AC;&#x153;smashand-grabâ&#x20AC;? crimes committed over the past few months. Two men were charged for their roles in a Sept. 19 incident in University Circle; a third man was arrested in October for â&#x20AC;&#x153;engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity.â&#x20AC;? All have ties to the Wade Park gang.

Investigators have connected the

gang to more than 50 â&#x20AC;&#x153;smash and grabâ&#x20AC;? crimes around the city â&#x20AC;&#x201D; incidents that see criminals crash a van (often stolen) into a storefront and then steal the ATM within.

If recent headlines make it seem like the Year of the Smash And Grab, well, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not far from the truth.

The recent raids follow a separate investigation that led to 11 men being charged with those sorts of crimes back in August. In that indictment, a whopping 74 pages of records reveal how the men carefully plotted 10 runs across ďŹ ve counties over the previous year. All told, the group garnered â&#x20AC;&#x153;hundreds of thousands of dollars.â&#x20AC;?

As Prosecutor Timothy McGinty pointed out at the time, these crimes are not simply ďŹ nancial; the method behind the thefts was often quite dangerous. (â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were greatly worried that someone was going to be killed,â&#x20AC;? he said at the time.)

In a feature on the rise of ATM thefts, Time reported that most machines hold anywhere from $10,000 to $200,000.

CARFENTANIL. Before this summer, the word meant absolutely nothing to most Ohioans, unless you happened to work at a zoo. Even there, though, it’s not exactly an everyday term.

But then a flash flood of headlines rolled in and suddenly the general public was very well aware of what carfentanil is: an opiate used to knock out elephants during surgery.

They knew that because the heroin crisis has gotten worse. An entire generation of addicts is dying in American bedrooms and bathrooms and cars, in fast food restaurants and bars.

In July 2016, Akron alone saw 236 overdoses in three weeks. The numbers were shocking, which is saying something — Cuyahoga County, Summit County, Ohio and America at large are subjected to numbing and record-setting overdose stats every month at this point. But an abrupt spike of 200 was unheard of in Akron.

FEATURE Something was different.

That difference was highlighted publicly when Akron police chief James Nice announced that carfentanil was suspected in some cases. The word blindsided observers. Long used as a sedative for large animals like elephants and rhinoceroses, carfentanil had somehow seeped into the heroin supply.

The introduction of the powerful prescription painkiller fentanyl into the heroin chain had a lot to do with that. But that process unfolded slowly over decades. The potency in 2016 is advancing tenfold, thanks to tiers of American drug dealers “stepping on” their product and cutting a buffet of chemical analogs of fentanyl, like carfentanil, into the supply.

And so we come to the next wave of the opiate overdose crisis. This summer introduced addicts and the general public alike to carfentanil, the most powerful commercial opiate in the world. (It’s prohibited from use in war under the Chemical Weapons Convention.) And it’s killing Americans in droves.

Carfentanil, marketed under the brand name Wildnil, has a long and mostly niche history in the annals of American pharmaceuticals. For years, the drug rested on the shelves of zoologists and veterinarians specializing in large animals. It’s a uniquely powerful sedative.

“There’s no human use for carfentanil,” Keith Martin says.

charge of the Cleveland office of the Drug Enforcement Agency. His office has been closely tracking the movement of carfentanil in Ohio.

“And even when they use carfentanil for [sedating large animals], it’s used in small doses,” Martin says. “And it’s not always guaranteed that they’ll be able to bring that animal back to life. For someone to be putting into their body or their system carfentanil, knowing that it can possibly kill a large animal — I mean, it’s almost like playing Russian roulette.”

Carfentanil is 100 times more powerful that fentanyl, which itself is 80 times more powerful than heroin.

That comparison can be found in any number of news articles, but it’s hard to grasp what that even means. In very simple terms: When it comes to carfentanil, all it takes is a snowflake-sized amount to kill a human, even through seemingly benign skin contact. Unwitting heroin addicts, duped by dealers with dollar signs in their eyes, are shooting this stuff into their veins.

(Animal clinicians and, now, first responders must wear protective gloves and masks when dealing with the stuff.)

The U.S. Department of Defense has long identified the drug as a potential weapon in the hands of enemy nations. Lately, the U.S. has grown concerned that ISIS operatives could begin using the drug in

various biological attacks. It’s a grave and known concern. In 2002, Russian special forces deployed gaseous carfentanil in a counterattack at a Moscow theater; there, some 40 Chechen terrorists had taken 850 hostages. The opiate killed all of the attackers, along with 133 hostages. (Naloxone was used to save some hostages.) The U.S. later deemed the actions justifiable.

But when it comes to American addictions, the drug falls in line with a trend toward synthetic opioids — a different beast altogether than Oxycontin and Vicodin prescriptions, which, through government regulations and public stigma, are on the decline nationally.

For the most part, carfentanil is being created in clandestine laboratories in China, where oversight remains far more lax than in the States. The drug can be purchased online via the “dark web” on the encrypted Tor network

and shipped right to one’s doorstep here in the U.S. (Go ahead and Google it. See for yourself how easy it is to find.) The drug is a Schedule II controlled substance, according to the DEA’s oversight, and remains illegal to possess outside of properly outfitted animal clinics, such as the zoological medicine department at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. Because the drug is coming in through the mail, like an Amazon Prime order, the standard investigations that end with indictments against a ring of regional dealers don’t really work in this new climate. Still, investigators say that cartels play a role. The manufacturers in China may not be directly in cahoots with them, but Mexican cartels long familiar with the opiate business are getting their hands on these uniquely powerful synthetics and introducing them into | clevescene.com | November 2 - 8, 2016

Martin points out that, naturally, money has driven this trend. The proďŹ t margin on fentanyl and carfetanil (and other analogs, like acetyl fentanyl and U-47700) is dramatic. Only a small amount is needed; you can smuggle in a brick of carfentanil and have enough supply to cut a mountain of heroin. The drug that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re selling becomes stronger, and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more to go around. More money.

The U.S. and China continue to discuss the matter of rising overdose deaths and border seizures â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the DEA maintains an ofďŹ ce in Beijing where agents work to clamp down on clandestine manufacturers â&#x20AC;&#x201D; though itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unclear how far along those talks have progressed. China has not yet scheduled the control of the drug. This year, the Associated Press took a close look and identiďŹ ed 12 Chinese businesses that said they would export carfentanil to the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Belgium and Australia for as little as $2,750 per kilogram.

As part of that investigation, the AP contacted business owners in China. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We can supply carfentanil ... for sure,â&#x20AC;? a saleswoman from Jilin Tely Import and Export Co. wrote to reporters in a September email. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of our hot sales product.â&#x20AC;?

addiction, via legally prescribed painkillers, ďŹ lled hospital waiting rooms to the brim, this second wave has driven patients to the streets.

That, combined with the proďŹ t motive, has prompted the ďŹ&#x201A;ash ďŹ&#x201A;ood of fentanyl- and carfentanil-laced heroin.

Demand soars, and supply follows.

Ohio, once ground zero for opiate prescriptions in the late 20th century, has become the â&#x20AC;&#x153;test tubeâ&#x20AC;? for highpowered synthetic opiates, according to a theory pushed by Hamilton County coroner Lakshmi Sammarco. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The very intense and focused spike brought up a lot of fears ... that our community was being used as a test tube,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What are [the dealers] learning from it? Are they looking to see how many people itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s going to kill or how quickly our ďŹ rst responders can respond? And how many customers is that going to generate for them?â&#x20AC;?

The answers to those questions are unclear. (Martin maintains that the ďŹ ght against opiates in Ohio is a â&#x20AC;&#x153;â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s see what happens todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;-type thing.â&#x20AC;? Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no telling whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on the horizon.) But the bottom line is clear: Last year in Hamilton County, which includes Cincinnati, there were more deaths attributed to fentanyl than to heroin.

And while Ohio may be the â&#x20AC;&#x153;test

tube,â&#x20AC;? itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not alone; carfentanil was linked to 19 recent deaths in and around Detroit, two indictments near Louisville, Kentucky, and, for the ďŹ rst time ever, Alberta, Canada.

Which led us to this summer in Ohio. By September, carfentanil had become the buzzword of a crisis.

The drug was so off-the-radar that Sammarcoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce and the federal government had to leap through hoops simply to acquire a testing sample of the stuff to verify what had killed victims. With the help of U.S. Sen. Rob Portman and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, a sample of carfentanil was acquired, and coronerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ces around the state could begin testing recent overdose victims for the presence of this powerful elephant sedative. Right away, Sammarco said, her Cincinnati ofďŹ ce began conďŹ rming that carfentanil was involved in at least eight recent overdose deaths, with more to come. She began the process of retroactively testing other victims.

What that meant in real terms for EMS personnel, for instance, was a need to double-down on reactive efforts like the use of naloxone, the drug that counteracts the effects of an opioid overdose. To bring a victim back from a heroin overdose, a paramedic might need to use 4

milligrams of naloxone in what’s become a frighteningly common routine for first responders. But when carfentanil is involved in the overdose, paramedics may need to use 12 milligrams of naloxone or more.

Even then, nothing’s guaranteed.

To return to Martin’s point: Sometimes even elephants don’t come back from the drug.

“I’ve not seen anything like I’m seeing today,” Martin says. After 22 years with the DEA, he says, this year has quickly become the most harrowing era in the country’s relationship with drugs.

With the introduction of elephant sedative into both the heroin supply and the heroin conversation, the American public has begun to slowly reframe the problem: Replacing the word “epidemic” with “public health crisis” is a start.

“If I was to describe it like a triage situation, we’re bleeding profusely and we need a tourniquet.

It’s not going to take a Band-Aid and it’s not going to take someone telling us to put pressure on the wound and it will all be better. We need real action and we need it now,” said Newtown police chief Tom Synan.

He leads the Hamilton County Drug Coalition Task Force, a new type of intergovernmental organization that’s popping up in counties around the country, including here in Cuyahoga County. “The time for talk is done. We need action.”

What’s going to happen?

There’s an adage that will come up in any conversation about the crisis: You can’t arrest your way out of the problem. “I’ve said it a thousand times, but it’s true,” says Aaron Marks, a member of the Cuyahoga County Heroin and Opioid Task Force. “Even with the fentanyl now, people are like, ‘Oh, we’ve got to get these dealers off the street!’

They’ll just keep coming. You’ve got to figure out other things.”

The group looks at the problem from both a macro and a micro angle: addressing individuals’ addictions and health problems while working to stop the runaway train of society’s addiction to opiates.

“It’s very frustrating,” Marks says, “because you’re trying to figure out what to do. And laws start to change, and things you work on for a year and a half are finally starting to get implemented — and then a whole new piece of the puzzle shows up. And of all the sudden you’re going, ‘Oh, wait. Naloxone’s not working for people who are on carfentanil. Now what?’

“This thing’s going to be a decade

long,” Marks says. “It keeps evolving and changing.”

As of Oct. 6, 385 people have fatally overdosed in Cuyahoga County this year. Stakeholders anticipate that we’ll see 500 by year’s end. The crisis is becoming visible and unavoidable, in all corners of the county and state. Pictures of addicts passed out in cars spread like wildfire.

“And of all the sudden you’re going, ‘Oh, wait. Naloxone’s not working for people who are on carfentanil.

Now what?’”

This month, the Cuyahoga County Heroin and Opioid Task Force will be honored with the Attorney General’s Award, the “most prestigious award within the Department of Justice,” according to U.S. attorney Carole Rendon. Her office works closely with the task force to craft new drug policy and prevent the public health crisis from getting worse. The Attorney General’s Award recognizes that the task force is doing great work against profound odds.

Earlier this year, the DEA seized 900 oxycodone pills in Ohio.

“But it wasn’t oxycodone. It was fentanyl, disguised as oxycodone.

Imagine that: Somebody pulls out a bag of what they think is oxycodone and gives it to 10 kids. You’re dead,” Martin says. “I hate to be doom and gloom, but that’s my world right now.”

At least one problem that makes this crisis unique is that the people who are dying do indeed know that these drugs are becoming less and less predictable. They’re aware of the heightened dangers contained in a bag of heroin. “At the same time, opioid addiction is extremely powerful,” Steven Kurtz, the director of Nova Southeastern University’s Center for Applied Research on Substance Abuse and Health Disparities, told Fast Company last month, “so having them stop isn’t usually an option.”

ART KNOW YOUR ROOTS Zygote Press turns spotlight toward wide network of Spaces’ interns

By Josh Usmani BEHIND THE SCENES, THE interns at local, non-profit arts organizations are always working hard to help the organizations and their art initiatives throughout Northeast Ohio. To celebrate these hardworking interns and their efforts, Zygote Press conceived its In-Turn exhibition to showcase their talents.

“I was an intern many years ago at Spaces, and I pay much of my schooling in the arts due to my time spent there learning the ropes, meeting artists, prepping slides for jurying and installing shows,” says Liz Maugans, executive director of Zygote Press. “I met so many people from my intern experience, and it gave me a leg up in what I would know was going to be an art life that I am experiencing now. Having interns was essential from day one to Zygote, and I am blessed to have so many wonderful artists helping us do the good work. I am indebted to them for their ideas, abilities and skills.”

This year’s In-Turn exhibition is curated by Frances Lee, former Zygote intern and current MFA candidate at the University of Chicago.

“The represented organizations are all workshops in town,” Lee says. “These art nonprofits rely on intern labor to remain open

and accessible to the public. In exchange for monitoring an open studio, or helping to hang a show, the artists are provided the tools and space necessary to hone their practice. There is an irony to artists professionalizing their practices in the context of unpaid work, but this work-exchange economy is robust in Cleveland.”

Dennis Barrie is the founding executive director of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, and famously brought Robert Mapplethorpe’s controversial photography exhibition to Cincinnati as director of the Contemporary Art Center.

RACE TO THE BOTTOM The dregs of racial conflict are played for cringe-worthy laughs in the spectacular An Octoroon at Dobama Theatre

By Christine Howey THE OPENING SCENE OF AN Octoroon, now at Dobama Theatre, is one of the most disarming lidlifters for any play in recent memory.

Ananias Dixon, a black actor, walks out on the stage in his underwear and addresses the audience as BJJ, a doppelganger for the playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. Smiling engagingly, he proceeds to share his feelings about how, as an AfricanAmerican writer, he’s always accused of deconstructing the race problem in America, even when he writes a play featuring talking farm animals.

Of course, this is an obvious feint since that is exactly what JacobsJenkins is about to do. As BJJ applies white face paint to himself, he complains that he can’t find any white actors to play the white people in this show, which is based on an 1859 melodrama by Dion Boucicault titled The Octoroon. Boucicault’s original tale was a florid story of a mixed race love affair between the white owner of a declining Louisiana plantation, George Peyton, and Zoe, who is an octoroon.

According to the laws of that antebellum time, a person who had one-eighth black blood was considered an octoroon and thereby stained, rendered less than human. And the playwright’s stylized version of that old theatrical chestnut forms the bulk of this fascinating, disturbing work. Shifting smoothly from high melodrama to meta-theater to contemporary language and

performance customs, the proceedings are often confusing — especially in the first act.

But the acting, under the superb direction of Nathan Motta, is always fully on point and riveting. After the opening scene, we are introduced to Boucicault (sharply rendered by Abraham Adams), the hard-drinking Irish playwright who authored the original piece. As he dons red face paint, to play a couple more characters later on, he regales the audience with his theatrical innovations (“I invented the matinee!”) along with other random complaints.

The face painting is completed when Boucicault’s assistant arrives and dons blackface so he can play two of the slaves on George’s property, Pete and Paul. Once all the faces are in place, we slide into Jacobs-

speak in contemporary slang, with one calling the other “ghetto” and referring to their owners as “coolass white people.” It is arresting and jarring to see these women — played with sass and style by Katrice Monee Headd, India Nicole Burton, and Maya Jones — gossiping about their slavery as people today would talk about working at Target. And it brings home the heinous everyday truth of that time with full force.

Of course, every melodrama needs a villain and that role is also handled by Dixon, who plays the evil McCloskey by putting on a black cloak and snapping on a wiry black mustache.

In a performance that has to be seen to be believed, Dixon inhabits each of his characters fully while staying true to the essentially artificial nature of the entire play. He has scenes where

Dixon reemerges, his white-face now carefully applied, as the dapper George, a man of the world who recently inherited the plantation from his uncle. From the get-go, he is actively being pursued by Dora, a blonde who lives over yonder mountain. But George only has eyes for Zoe, his uncle’s daughter.

One reason the play is a challenge to track is that three of the characters, female house slaves at the mansion,

he plays both George and McClosky in rapid succession and even has a dramatic fight with himself, throwing himself head-over-heels at one time.

In all, it is simply a tour-de-force achievement.

As Dora, Anjanette Hall flutters and flirts with all the intensity of a petticoated barracuda, and her scene when she collapses in tears after learning of George’s affection for Zoe is a gem of intentional overacting. Rachel Green also stands out as the simpering

Zoe, accepting her fate as a person stained by her blood and mincing about with her arms bouncing puppetlike, as if they were attached with strings to her ankles.

The slaves are “led” by the compliant older slave Pete, and Arif Silverman plays him to the hilt, sidling sideways across the stage. After these scuttling movements Silverman perpetually finishes in the classic “Black Sambo” pose, arms and legs akimbo, fingers spread, and always, always smiling. Nathan A. Lillu also registers powerfully in the second act in the small but telling role of Ratts.

There is so much to admire in this production it almost seems unfair to point out some weaknesses. But there are a few. The overdone melodramatic acting begins to feel tiresome after a while. And the entire play ends on an anti-climactic note as two of the female slaves (Headd and Burton) chat absently about the future and the fact that the other slave (Jones) might have killed herself. It is at this point that one longs to see BJJ again, to wrap up this most challenging look into race in America.

Or perhaps it should finish on the one projected image near the end of the show, an actual photograph, that still sends chills down the spine of anyone who believes freedom should be more than just a word.

MOVIES LIFE AND (EXPLODING) LIMB! Despite sappy Christian stuff, Mel Gibson’s latest is accomplished war drama

By Sam Allard THE U.S. SOLDIERS IN MEL Gibson’s WWII drama Hacksaw Ridge, out Friday in wide release, must ascend a vertical ridge on the island of Okinawa to confront thousands of caped Japanese combatants who, according to the wartime mythology of the time, could not wait to die on the field of battle.

In some of the grittiest and most well-coordinated battle cinematography since Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, Gibson has produced what may be classified as a great war movie. But for a tailspin into heavy-handed Christian imagery late in the film, Hacksaw Ridge is an accomplished visual and emotional feast for the ultraconservative Gibson.

Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spiderman, The Social Network) stars as Seventh-day Adventist Desmond Doss, a true-life conscientious objector who nonetheless wished to serve as a medic in WWII. He was deployed to the Pacific theater and was ultimately awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism, the first conscientious objector to be thus decorated. Garfield, a Brit, tries out a neighborly Carolinian drawl for the role; and he’s nearly as successful as his countryman Jude Law, who played Carolinian Thomas Wolfe in this year’s Genius.

Doss falls in love with a nurse, Dorothy (Teresa Palmer), on the eve

of basic training, a courtship no less romantic for its brevity; in fact maybe more so, given that the stakes had rarely been so high for American lovebirds, stakes that Doss’ father, a WWI vet (Hugo Weaving), knows all too well. “Better to have loved and lost,” right? Doss is buttressed by his love for Dorothy (and, if his trusty bible is any indication, for God) as he’s mocked and beaten by the other soldiers in his division, cornfed beefcake Smitty (Luke Bracey, from Point Break) chief among them.

Despite the best efforts of his superiors (Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington), Doss prevails in his quest to serve without bearing a weapon, per the dictates of his faith.

The second half of the film, then — after all these back and forths about the ways religion and morality fit into the messy realities of war — recounts the battle which made Doss a WWII legend. During a gruesome amphibious assault on the ridge and a sustained battle thereafter — grenades, bullets, bayonets, body parts — Doss refuses to retreat. He singlehandedly collects more than 70 injured soldiers on an active battlefield.

The attacks and counterattacks on the ridge recall Saving Private Ryan’s Normandy beach invasion in more ways than one, and add to Gibson’s impressive “epic” action credentials (Braveheart, and Apocalypto, a personal fave).

The big downfall of the movie was its late-arriving reliance on syrupy heavenly imagery. Most of us are either uneasy or actively perturbed watching sappy religious stuff onscreen, if seldom actually moved by it. And the thing is: Doss’ miraculous feat, his relentless bravery in the face of death, is already so profoundly moving — so gripping, too — that attempts to amplify it along an evangelical bandwidth weaken what’s already been conveyed in the story. We know that Doss is a super religious guy. We know his faith has been integral to his actions (though a personal history with violence seems equally important). And we’ve seen those who doubted Doss adjust their

opinions.

So why must Gibson inundate us with these dime-store Heaven is for Real gags: this slo-mo postbattle baptismal cleansing, for example; these beatific pleas, from Doss, during an active battle, for his bible; these gooey cumulous clouds, suffused with light, as Doss makes his angelic gurneyed descent to the beach? Show, don’t tell, the old saying goes. But in the final 20 minutes of Hacksaw Ridge, Gibson is no longer content to show; he feels compelled, for whatever reason, to preach.

SPOTLIGHT: TROLLS ANIMATED FLICKS SUCH AS THE SECRET Life of Pets, Zootopia and Finding Dory currently sit on the list of the year’s top-grossing movies.

While Trolls might not make it into the Top 10, it’s another solid addition to the list of the year’s animated releases. Thanks to the star power provided by Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Zooey Deschanel and Russell Brand, among many other top-shelf celebs who provide their vocal talents, Trolls, a 3-D computer-animated musical based on the dolls of the same name, succeeds in entertaining both adults and kids even if it delivers its message with a heavy-handed approach. The movie opens areawide on Friday.

The plot centers on the eternally optimistic Poppy (Kendrick) and the curmudgeonly Branch

(Timberlake), two Trolls who team up after Chef (Christine Baranski) captures several of their Troll friends, including Troll Creek (Russell Brand). Poppy is on a mission to redeem herself after Bergen crown prince Gristle Jr. (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and his father, King Gristle Sr. (John Cleese), banished her from the Bergens’ village in the wake of the Trolls’ escape during one of the annual Troll-eating rituals.

Despite their very different personalities, Poppy and Branch set their differences aside as they head to the Bergens’ village on a rescue mission. There, they befriend the shy maid Bridget (Zooey Deschanel) and make a deal with her. If she frees their friends, they will help her get a date with Gristle Jr., who has become king

after his father’s death. The Trolls give her a makeover in the process, and the date goes well even though Bridget flees into the night like Cinderella when it’s over.

On numerous occasions, the film’s characters wax philosophical about the importance of finding happiness. That sentiment comes through in the cheery songs as well. Not that there’s anything wrong with espousing the virtues of a positive attitude. Timberlake, who serves as an executive producer for the film’s music and contributes the original song “Can’t Stop the Feeling!,” deserves credit for giving the soundtrack a contemporary feel and making the music, like the film itself, appealing to both adults and children. — Jeff Niesel | clevescene.com | November 2 - 8, 2016

TASTY TRAVELS 811 Kitchen takes diners on a mostly smooth trip around the world

By Douglas Trattner IF YOU WERE TO STAPLE YOUR collection of take-out menus onto the wall, hurl darts at them, and fuse the pitted results into a menu, it might very well resemble the one found at 811. The globe-trotting document takes diners on an around-the-world journey from Japan to Korea to India to the diner down the block.

811 is both the past and future of Cleveland restaurants. Long before savvy operators started building hyper-focused restaurants around niche products like grilled cheese and tacos, the trend was to take a more egalitarian approach. Sweeping menus that offered something for everybody were the name of the game.

Today, in an attempt to please today’s unprecedentedly finicky dining populace, restaurants appear to be reverting to shotgun-style menus.

Few operators personified the oldschool edict of doing one thing and doing it well better than partners Brad Friedlander, Jonathan Bennett, Peter Vauthy and Jon Gross, who have built a small fortune by selling fat slabs of prime beef at Red in Beachwood and South Beach.

“When we grew up, if you wanted seafood, you went to a seafood restaurant. If you wanted barbecue, you went to a barbecue restaurant,” Bennett asserts.

But times have changed. These days we tend to eat out more often and in larger groups, which means smaller budgets and broader diets to satisfy. That brings us to 811, where the menu ricochets among cuisines like a bumper car with no brakes. That can make for a mighty fun ride in the right hands, or it can spell certain disaster in the wrong ones. Even in capable hands, like those of executive chef Andrew Bower, there are bound to be some flubs.

The ride starts in China thanks to a bamboo steamer basket filled with crispy, colorful shrimp chips in place of the traditional bread basket.

The frilly poofs are fun to snack on with a beer or glass of wine while you scrutinize the wide-ranging menu and

than hot and with absolutely no char on the meat, which is the reason we bother to grill foods in the first place.

There is range and excitement to spare in the appetizer section. Spicedusted pork rinds ($3) are as good as they get, and the meaty “Chinese TakeOut Ribs” ($11) are head and shoulders above the sticky-sweet versions dished up in countless Chinese-American eateries. The Korean fried chicken nuggets ($9) remind me of an Indian pakora thanks to the spice profile, but these dark, crunchy and addictive snacks might be the perfect bar snack.

Everybody but the most obsessive sushi disciples will find something to like in 811’s roundup of rolls. Well-built models come filled with tempura-fried shrimp and avocado ($13), yellowtail

endeavor to chart a course.

An interesting place to start is in the robata section, a collection of skewered and grilled foods. Priced at $3 to $4 per stick, the idea is to mix and match items like chicken with scallions, southern-style shrimp, octopus or shishito peppers. On one occasion, a few of the items arrived less

and scallion ($11), and spicy tuna ($9).

The sushi rice was close to perfect in flavor and texture, but we found the nori to be tough and chewy, making one roll particularly clumsy.

In an apparent first for Cleveland restaurants, there is an entire section devoted to hummus. A base of nutty, creamy hummus ($8) can be

augmented with options like pickled onions and chiles or a more traditional garnish of za’atar, olive oil and fresh parsley. Each order comes with a pile of soft, warm pita bread.

Sections devoted to sandwiches and larger plates present diners with just as much diversity, though there were bound to be some miscues. The first came in the form of a Philly-style steak and cheese sandwich ($14), a gloopy mass of chopped meat and cheese sauce poured into a sub bun. An otherwise excellent pork ramen bowl ($16) was bogged down by the noodles, which clumped together in too many places. But there were zero misfires on the Korean-style short rib dish ($18), tender and flavorful cross-cut pieces of beef paired with fiery kimchi and chiles on a bed of jasmine rice.

The contemporary 180-seat dining room also offers something for everybody: casual lounge seating, which takes advantage of warm breezes flowing through open glass panels; a lengthy bar and comfortable high-tops; and sleek, elegant booths.

811 might not add up to a perfect 10, but there’s more than enough diversity, substance and style to satisfy all but the most obstinate diners.

on size and ingredients, these desserts can save both money and time. Reeves attended the Pennsylvania Culinary Institute, working at a French bakery in Pittsburgh until moving back to Cleveland and opening Simply Delicious Pies with her sister in 2012.

The menu is divided into fruit pies, cream pies, specialty, seasonal, potpies and quiches available in sizes ranging from 6-inch to 10-inch rounds. They’ve recently expanded into wholesale and hope to start catering more special events and weddings.

For the four-year anniversary, a redesigned website with an online ordering system was put into place, providing an additional option to placing orders in person or by phone. “Thanksgiving just gets crazier and crazier every year,” says Reeves, who whips out an oldschool book of carbon copy receipt slips to prove it.

“We’d fill up at least two of these books,” she says. “I’d have to tear out the page and separate them, alphabetize names, read everybody’s handwriting … . It was just awful.” For the petite staff

of three, ordering must stay as streamlined as possible in order to pump out enough pie.

On Nov. 25, 2015, a line wrapped around the block as customers waited to pick up dessert to take to dinner. With the exception of cream pies, most can be frozen and reheated by following simple instructions provided on each package, so you can skip the Thanksgiving equivalent of Black Friday. Order online and have them ready to pick up by next day, but be warned that it may take extreme self-control to make it home without a piece missing.

Today, the holidays are far enough in the distance to genuinely enjoy the scent of fresh baked crust and spices permeating the showroom. An enameled antique oven reflects the glow of a neon sign reading, “Open, Pies.” A few varieties of sweet and savory pie sit on shelves awaiting walk-in customers, but soon enough they’ll disappear. Reeves stands behind the counter, pointing at the chicken potpies in the display case.

“We can’t make them fast enough!” she grins.

RYAN KASTON JUMPS FROM EXECUTIVE CHEF TO OWNER OF POPULAR BISTRO 185

He says that the jump to owner is an inevitable one for culinary professionals who strive to work as hard and smart as they can.

“Too many times I’ve found myself in a sous chef position or an executive sous position or executive chef position running that operation as if it were mine,” he explains. “It’s something that’s instilled in you, something you just do. Once I realized that I was just going to continue to run everyone’s operation like it was my own, then I might as well go out on a limb and have my own.”

Now, perhaps, the Levines finally will get that retirement they always planned on having.

“Instead of retiring a little over 10 years ago like most people do, we opened a new business,” Ruth says.

“This was a seamless transition. Marc and I want Ryan to be successful.

We’ve been talking to our customers about the transition. Ryan really likes being on the floor. I think it’s really good to have that kind of facetime with people.”

Management notified the public via the following message: “Pacos Tacos has permanently closed as of October 22, 2016.

Chef Art Pour Restaurant Group also operates M Italian in Chagrin Falls and Burntwood Tavern, which is up to eight locations.

COCKTAIL PIONEERING VELVET TANGO ROOM TO CELEBRATE 20 YEARS OF SPIRIT SUPERIORITY While most of us were too busy getting buzzed on Zimas, Cosmos, White Russians and Chocolate Martinis to notice, Paulius Nasvytis was quietly launching a cocktail revolution in a gritty corner of Cleveland. Next month will mark the 20th anniversary of the Velvet Tango Room (2095 Columbus Rd., 216-2418869), Cleveland’s first real cocktail lounge that continues to set the bar for quality and style to this day.

“In some ways it feels like two years and in some ways it feels like 50,” Nasvytis says. “When I opened, this was a bar that was held to a different standard and it was a bar that held its customers to a different standard as well, which a lot of people couldn’t fathom. We’ve kept to those roots but through the years I’ve always tried to keep upping the game.”

A lot has changed over those two decades, both in terms of the local cocktail culture and the neighborhood VTR calls home. Years before Ohio City became the food and drink hub it is today, Nasvytis purchased a falling-down building on a dog-eared block and had the balls to start selling the city’s most expensive cocktails when he finally opened his doors in 1996.

“The neighborhood was really, really rough,” he recalls. “It was like the no-man’s land between the few sparkles that Ohio City had back then and Tremont, which was still in the infancy of its transformation.”

That he managed to maintain the same level of quality and consistency for 20 years is both astonishing and admirable. While many other operators dumb down their product to chase profits and maintain the bottom line, Nasvytis continued to improve his bar and business year in and year out.

His was one of the first bars to go non-smoking by choice, and his bartenders were employing fresh fruit juices and housemade mixers long before the rest. VTR still offers its guests live entertainment, in the form of a three-piece jazz band or a pianist, every day of the week.

To usher in the next decade, Velvet Tango Room will unveil a new cocktail book that is smaller and more modern in both design and character. It contains all the classics plus a few new selections, but it also has stripped away a lot of the nowsuperfluous verbiage that helped to educate customers. Thanks to people like Nasvytis, that need has all but vanished.

“The cocktail game in Cleveland is on a very different level now,” he says.

Of course, there are still those customers who prefer to sip their White Russians and Chocolate Martinis, wholly oblivious to modern cocktail forces.

“To this day, not everybody gets it,” Nasvytis says. “But I’m good with that; not everybody has to.”

FUZZY FIDELITY Local indie rockers Cereal Banter return with another noisy new effort

BY INDIE ROCK STANDARDS, Joseph Joseph was a late bloomer.

Joseph, who leads the highly prolific locally based experimental indie rock act Cereal Banter, didn’t play on stage until he was 24.

But that hasn’t stopped him from devoting a serious amount of time and money to the band. The group will celebrate the release of its latest effort, the cassette-only Oatmeal Outburst, with a show at Now That’s Class. And the group has another album, Junk Jazz, slated for release in January.

“I’ve played drums since I was 14,” says Joseph one afternoon from Platform, the Ohio City brewery that’s not far from his Hingetown home. His drumming skills even landed him a feature in DRUM! Magazine. “As a kid, I recall being able to do algebra in my head without showing my work. And teachers would deduct points from my grade, thinking that I cheated. I was in honors math classes because I was able to ace multiplication quizzes

faster than anyone in the class. I liked the rhythmic drumming of someone like [Rush’s] Neil Peart or [Smashing Pumpkins’] Jimmy Chamberlin; it spoke to me.”

He asked his father for a drum set and then set it up in the living room, where he practiced relentlessly.

“From that point on, I became obsessed with drumming,” he says. “I would put on the Cranberries album and follow the snare work. I’ve never had lessons. I’m so passionate about it but I can’t teach someone to play like me. I have no technical knowledge. I sawed my bass drum in half just so it fit in my Honda Accord at the time.”

One night — when he says he was high — he had the realization that he was good enough to play in front of people. He subsequently joined a punk band, called You Are the War That I Want, at Youngstown State University.

“It was a tight-sounding band, and I developed the ability to play in the pocket,” he says.

The band would split up and Joseph would start a short-lived alt-weekly in Youngstown before he moved to the Cleveland area to take a job as a proofreader at a company in Independence. Eventually, the company promoted him to an international marketing role, which he held down for several years.

After moving to Cleveland, he joined Scotfree & the Guilty Plea.

In that band, he met bassist Tony Moscorelli.

“We formed the notion of the Cereal Banter concept in 2009,” he says. “We had the same mindset and wanted to get away from the singer and guitarist model and have this two-piece thing. We had enthusiasm for minimalism, for what we could do with a drummer and a highly technical other player.”

The Flaming Lips’ album Embryonic made him think forming his own band was doable.

“It was a very thin-sounding album

but also very complex,” he says. “It has these Miles Davis moments with the instrumentation and noise and these dark and stark Krautrock stompers.

The drums are distorted and louder than they should be and everything surrounding it sounds supplement.

We were obsessed with how fast we could play and how interesting we could make something minimal sound.”

With the group’s debut single, 2010’s “Edible Confetti,” a song that features squiggly guitar riffs and echoing vocals, the band set out to show just how off-kilter it could be.

“If you listen to the song, you can hear David Bowie vibes as far as the vocal approach goes,” says Joseph. “It’s full instrumentation — synthesizers, guitars and bass, and acoustic guitars for the layering. We put out that single with bedroom-type recordings on side B.” After releasing some live material, Joseph asked Molly Pamela to join the | clevescene.com | November 2 - 8, 2016

“I saw something special and wanted to keep it moving forward,” he says. “We played one big show at the Grog Shop, which was great just because it was the Grog Shop and that was a goal. We were doing lots of shows at the [now shuttered] Bela Dubby and the Grog was a step up.”

The band recorded the subsequent album, Lights Lights Lights, live at WRUW. One reviewer asked how high they were when they made the album.

“It was a new approach,” Joseph says of the album. “I was playing drums with a new person who didn’t know how to play anything at all.

But we found a way to play in this freeform fashion. We put that out on the basis of how exciting it was. It was improvisation and just had that vibe.”

In the wake of the release of 2012’s Sunblur, the band played “tons” of shows. Pamela played loop pedals and Joseph played synths with his left hand and drums with his right.

“We did whatever we had to do with the two-piece,” he says. “I was adamant about sticking to the two-piece. I didn’t want it to be a traditional band. I wanted it to be an egocentric project, which it is in the nicest fashion.”

Recorded in Greenpoint, New York, at Lone Pine Road Studio and engineered/mastered by Guardian Alien bassist Eli Winograd, the band’s 22-minute song/album, Sties of Pigs Flying with Flowers, Fields of Green Watered by Showers, is another step forward. The song/album offers good, noisy fun that starts slow with some stuttering drum beats but picks up

It’s all unscripted and reminiscent of Lightening Bolt or anything of that nature with a visceral sound. The second side has this fuzzy fidelity that goes with the mentality of what we set out to record.”

At the time of the recording, they didn’t realize it would become a studio release. But they liked the jam session so much, they decided to officially release it. They’ve even finished a new album, Junk Jazz, due out in 2017.

“The intent is to write compositions and put out more of a concept than two guys thrashing,” he says of Junk Jazz.

“If you listen to Junk Jazz, we want it to be more sophisticated and pop tune heavy but retain the improvisation and drum fills going to the next part and stuff like that. That’s what makes our music special. You don’t know what will happen next. It’s conceptual, not so much lyrically but musically, in the sense that there’s a similar theme in the opening as there is in the closing track. We use a different synthesizer on every recording just so you can identify which era of the band you’re hearing.”

Joseph admits the band’s music can be a difficult listen. And finding a local audience hasn’t been easy either.

“I think we’re a little too pop for the straight-up noise scene and too obscure for the rock scene,” he says.

“It’s not so much a challenge, but it seems like bands in Cleveland are one thing or another. We try to be more versatile. For the Happy Dog, we play more of the pop stuff and for Now That’s Class, we can turn up the volume and no one will remember a mistake, which is a nice approach.”

serious steam by song’s end as Pamela provocatively screams, “We’re all animals,” over pulsating synthesizers.

“I wanted to take it to a place like that with people who understood what we were going for,” says Joseph.

“We did a 30-minute piece with improvisation and scripted sections and cut it down to a 22-minute single.”

Joseph says he and Pamela wore themselves out playing shows. Last year, Joseph teamed up with singerbassist Nicholas Gunzburg, a local musician who was a fan of the band.

They’ve collaborated on the new cassette-only Oatmeal Outburst.

“The tape is two different tracks that Nick and I wrote,” says Joseph.

“I’d like to make a mono type recording where the drums are panned, kind of like the early Beatles records,” he says. “They sound like something is turned off. That’s the only concept. We just want to turn ourselves on if we want to keep doing this. We don’t want to play the same songs. It’s about winning the audience over with energy more than anything else and not playing the songs as they sound on the recordings.”

MUSIC GLORY DAYS Singer-guitarist Steve Earle revisits his terrific debut album, Guitar Town

By Jeff Niesel RELEASED 30 YEARS AGO, GUITAR Town established singer-guitarist Steve Earle as a tremendous talent in the alt-country world. Inspired by a Bruce Springsteen concert, Earle penned songs with a narrative approach, and they struck a chord.

When he performs at Music Box Supper Club, Earle will play the album in its entirety, something he’s doing in only a handful of cities. “It’s a cool show,” says Earle in a phone interview.

“We play the album and then we take a break and we come back and play a long set of whatever we feel like playing. You’ll get to hear a lot of stuff.”

In our interview, Earle talked a bit about each song on the album.

“Guitar Town” It was the first song written for the album. I had been in Nashville for a long time, almost 13 years. I had had a record deal with Epic. I got signed because I had made this rockabilly record that was out on an independent label. My publisher basically put it out. Epic Records signed me because it was at the height of the rockabilly thing. I knew that wouldn’t hold me forever, especially as a songwriter, but it was fun, and it got me playing electric guitar for the first time. I was still pretty down, but I had signed a new publishing deal with SilverlineGoldline, and the guy who ran it, Noel Fox, told me to write whatever I wanted to write and he’d get me another record deal. I had had a few songs recorded over the years but not that many. Justin, my son, had been born by that time, so I was in a little bit of a panic. A friend took me to see Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. I saw Bruce walk out and play “Born in the U.S.A.” first, and three hours and 10 minutes later I walked out of there and knew exactly what to do and I went home and wrote “Guitar Town.” That’s where the line “good rockin’ daddy down from Tennessee” came from.

It was unapologetic. I was surprised it became a single and a hit because it had such a specific purpose to me, which was to be the opening track on the record and the opening song of the show.

“Goodbye’s All We’ve Got Left” Springsteen and I are drawing on the same thing for sure. I had heard “Glory Days,” but I’m from San Antonio, Texas, and that’s where we both got that sound from. I knew [singer-songwriter] Doug Sahm from the time that I was 14 or 15 years old.

“Hillbilly Highway” The stuff they call rockabilly is just real country music. Jimbeau Hinson and I wrote it. It was his idea. He read Loretta Lynne’s book and she refers to what’s now I-65 running north out of the South to get you to Detroit. That was the idea behind it. Bill Golden and the Oak Ridge Boys had a house where Jimbeau and Tony Brown and I went and wrote two or three songs on that trip.

“Good Ol’ Boy (Gettin’ Tough)” There was always going to be rock songs on the album. It’s a rock song with a very country story. The character is not me. There are people who thought it was me. The only bad review I remember of Guitar Town was somebody at the Boston Phoenix who thought I was some sort of proto Toby Keith or something. He didn’t realize that I wasn’t necessarily the character who was singing. Then he found out that Dave Marsh liked me and wrote a different take on the record for another publication. I don’t read reviews anymore, thank god. In those days, I definitely did. People become shocked now when I write something political but this is a very political song.

“Someday” I definitely was that guy in the song. My parents were wonderful people, but I started running away when I was 14. I was running to something and not from anything. It was inspired by something I saw just a couple of years earlier. When I had the rockabilly band, we were coming back from Tulsa, I think, and were in Jackson, Tennessee, and had just pulled off and were looking for gas.

Maybe something was wrong with the van. I can’t remember, but we ran into this kid. He was in a Last of the Mohicans old-fashioned gas station, and he was working on his own car in the bay. We had to honk the horn three times to get his attention. I hung it all on that kid.

“Think It Over” That song and “Good Ol’ Boy (Gettin’ Tough)” were co-written with Richard Bennett, the guitar player on the whole record. As I had the first few songs and knew I was writing the album and I had a record deal, I got on the Oaks’ buses and Deadheaded it out to the West Coast, where the busses were being ferried for a tour which the guys flew to. “My Old Friend the Blues” I wrote it just before that trip to [Golden’s house]. It was maybe the second or third song for the album.

It’s one of the best songs I’ve written still to this day. I don’t know where it came from. There was something in me. As many times as I got married in the ’80s, I spent a lot of time alone.

And loneliness is a pretty dependable source for this kind of music.

the bus driver and got to L.A. I did a few different trips. I stayed at Richard Bennett’s house. He was playing guitar with Neil Diamond and had been for 17 years. He was a big influence. He was on the last tracks I did for Epic and produced some songs on the Rollin’ Rock record label in the early ’80s. I knew about him from that and there was a connection from [country singer-guitarist] Rodney [Crowell]

because he was in Rodney’s band the Cherry Bombs. We wrote that track.

Every note on it is Richard. We made a demo where Richard played all the instruments. We couldn’t beat it.

We tried doing it with the band in the studio. Finally, I stood there and sang and Richard played acoustic guitar and Harry Stinson played the snare drum. Richard went back and overdubbed the upright bass and the electric guitar. It’s all Richard and then Harry’s snare drum and me snging.

“Fearless Heart” It kind of is a power ballad. It was the ’80s, and I was trying to get laid. I always thought of it as a Roy Orbisonlike song. I’m don’t sing good enough to make it really a Roy Orbison song, but it’s as close to a Roy Orbison song as I could get.

“Little Rock n Roller” It was written right after I signed the record deal. I had written up most of the songs of the album. I had spilt up with my son Justin’s mother and was single for a moment. I missed JT and I wrote it.

“Down the Road” I wrote “Down the Road” second, after “Guitar Town.” I knew I had the opening, and I wrote it to be the ending of the album. Tony Brown is a writer on it because he gave me the first line, “on the blue side of evenings.” That’s his line, and the rest of it is mine. I gave him half of it. It’s too complicated to divide songs any other way. The mandolin is not me. It’s Emory Gordy, and he owns a Lloyd Loar-signed 1924 F-5. It’s a great mandolin. He got it from Ricky Skaggs about six months before we made the recording. That’s him playing mandolin on it.

GOD-GIVEN TALENT Spiritually minded rapper Lecrae brings his anticipated Destination Tour to town

By Jeff Niesel CHRISTIAN RAPPER LECRAE grew up in a household where music “was being constantly played around the clock.”

“There was never a moment when my mother wasn’t cleaning and listening to music or we weren’t driving listening to the radio,” says Lecrae in a recent phone interview.

The rapper had a secular hit with 2014’s Anomaly, which debuted at the top of the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and was recently certified gold.

In the wake of that album’s success, Lecrae signed a deal with Columbia, which will release his forthcoming album; he says that upcoming release is “about 90 percent done.”

In the meantime, Lecrae has announced a fall tour he’s dubbed “The Destination Tour, You’re Accepted.” He performs at House of Blues on Nov. 4.

“Even as a kid, I had to wrestle between watching cartoons on Saturday morning and watching MTV on Saturday morning,” he recalls. “I would eat, sleep and breathe music.

My cousins were big hip-hop heads and aspiring break dancers and DJs. They were older than me and they always made sure that I was inspired by old school hip-hop as well. They would always critique the latest and juxtapose that with classic hip-hop.”

When he was 11, he teamed up with some next-door neighbors who were in an aspiring R&B group. From that point forward, he considered hip-hop more than just a hobby.

When the rapper decided to release his first album, 2004’s Real Talk, he couldn’t find a label willing to take a chance on him, so he formed his own record label “kind of by default.”

“I was creating hip-hop, but at the same time I also embraced my newly found faith,” he says. “I wanted to

know who wanted this music. The doors were closed on both sides. The faith-based world thought it was rap. It wasn’t the traditional style of articulating what you believe in. The mainstream side thought it was good rap, but there were lots of spiritual references and didn’t know what it is.

I just wanted to bring it direct to the consumer. That was the route we took.

We wanted to take it directly to the people who could appreciate it.”

It wasn’t easy. At the time, Lecrae held down a day job installing cable TV. “Every night, I was going home to produce this album on a beat machine that I had gotten from Sam Ash or something like that,” he says. “It was rejuvenating to work on it every night.

To see the 9 to 5 job disappear was great.”

Lecrae has released several studio albums, and now that the climate has changed for spiritual hip-hop, he finds himself on the verge of becoming a household name.

“Kanye kicked some doors open with ‘Jesus Walks,’ and Chance the

produced the album. Album opener “Freedom” features rapid-fire raps and references to slavery over a soulful chorus and booming bass beats. The song sounds like a cross between Rage Against the Machine and Kanye West.

“It was really fun to make [the mixtape],” Lecrae says, adding that he considers S1 to be “one of my great friends.” “S1 and I just have a similar vision and passion artistically. To put something out that was timeless was a passion project.”

Another album highlight, “Gangland,” combines dance music, spoken word and rapping. “’Gangland’ is really an articulation of how African-American gangs, the Bloods and the Crips, had their origins,” says Lecrae, who spent a good portion of his youth in what he calls a “gang neighborhood” in Texas. “People don’t understand the gang’s origins. They were doing the best they could to protect their environments. It turned on them and imploded and became a volatile problem within the urban community.

Rapper has all kinds of spiritual references,” he says. “Kendrick Lamar is the same way. Hip-hop used to have this tough edge and bravado to it. Now, Drake can come out and be himself.

He’s not a gangster or a tough guy. I think that also opened the door for me to be myself.”

For his recent effort, Church Clothes 3, he teamed up with a slew of producers, including S1 (Beyonce, Kanye and Jay-Z), who executive

suffered the consequences of that lifestyle. I’ve lost friends and family.

There’s a lot of condemnation that comes down on the current state and the current gang members without people understanding the origins and how it came to be. You’re a little more compassionate and empathetic when you see the origins of it.”

In 2013, Lecrae partnered with NBA player Dwyane Wade, filmmaker Art Hooker, and Joshua DuBois,

former head of the Office of Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships under the Obama administration, to create the “This Is Fatherhood” campaign.

“For us, we want to provide a tangible example of fatherhood,” he says. “It lives on in us in examples. D. Wade is a great visible father for his children and I’m trying to see tangible expressions of fatherhood too.”

For Lecrae, a rapper who’s particularly sensitive to political and social issues, the recent social unrest suggests latent problems with socioeconomic conditions in the country “I think [socio-economic and racial] issues never went away,” he says.

“They were pacified and subdued.

It’s similar to keeping the peace and making the peace. If it’s a married couple and nobody is fighting, you’re keeping the peace. Maybe there are some underlying issues that you need to resolve. To deal with them, you have to bring them up. I hope we bring up these things and make peace and will actually deal with them and resolve them collectively as a nation.”

Expect to hear that message on his current tour, which draws inspiration from the production-heavy tours of other spiritually minded artists.

“I love live production and bringing a show,” he says. “The music is only a portion of it. I’m a performer. I love for people to feel and taste and experience the show. Kanye, Beyonce, Kings of Leon and U2 put on these incredible shows. I want to emulate that. It’s all preceding an album which I feel will be a timeless piece of work that articulates what we need to hear in this day and age.”

FINDING HIS FOOTING Singer Gary Louris reunites the classic Jayhawks lineup

By Jeff Niesel WHEN SINGER GARY LOURIS first started the Jayhawks, a pioneering alt-country band that formed in Minneapolis in 1985, he didn’t set out to craft a sound from roots rock and country.

Rather, he confesses that he was initially an “Anglophile” when it came to music.

“I was a prog rock guy and an art rock guy and a punk and pop and rock fan,” he says in a recent phone interview. “That influence came to me later in life. I don’t think of it as the foundation. I think of it as one of many influences within the band. At the time, I had stumbled upon American music and so had [co-founder Mark] Olson. We had a meeting of the minds, and it felt like we had found something that nobody else was doing. It was a smaller part of where our hearts lay, which is in many different types of music.”

The band had a great run in the ’90s, but Olson left in 1995 and the band went through various lineup changes (and even took a hiatus in 2004). Now, after various lineup changes, Louris has reunited the group’s celebrated late-1990s lineup (bassist Marc Perlman, drummer Tim O’Reagan and keyboardist Karen Grotberg) for Paging Mr. Proust, an album the group recorded at Martine’s Flora Recording & Playback in Portland, Oregon.

The album shows off the band’s psychedelic side as the group expands its sound with songs such as the shimmering “Lost the Summer,” a track with a distorted guitar riff and woozy vocals. Other tunes such as “Leaving the Monsters Behind,” “The Devil Is In Her Eyes” and “Quiet Corners & Empty Spaces” employ the keen harmony vocals and gentle harmonies for which the band is known. Louris, R.E.M.’s Peter Buck and Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Modest Mouse, My Morning Jacket) co-produced the disc.

“I was writing a lot of songs and trying to find my footing,” says Louris when asked about the decision to bring the band’s classic lineup back together. “I found that I really missed the structure of the band and the people in the band themselves. After

and you’re creating, it’s good to have some kind of structure. We have a musical vocabulary together, so that drew me back to them.”

Louris says he didn’t write the songs immediately after leaving rehab.

“You have to be careful if you start writing too quickly,” he says.

“You can write about everything being rosy. I gave it some time and started writing with no particular destination for the songs. I didn’t know what they would be or how they would take form or with whom.

When I first started writing again, I played a lot with electronic sounds and more droning-ness. Then, once I figured out it would be a Jayhawks record, I started picking through them to find the ones that would be most like a Jayhawks’ song. I think

going to rehab [in 2014] and getting off the opiates and almost dying and coming back and getting out of my head and seeing the world for what it is instead of in a distorted way, I kind of have had a new appreciation for a lot of things in life, including the members of the band. that’s why it’s a little more diverse than other records. Some songs were written when I knew they would be with the Jayhawks and we collaborated and jammed a bit.”

The album’s name comes from a friend who was traveling in Europe at the Amsterdam airport and heard what she thought was a

page for writer Marcel Proust. She wrote Louris an email about the experience.

“I immediately thought it was an affirmation of what I think, in that the world needs to reach out and connect with the ideas of someone who preached about slowing down and being where you’re at and not speeding everything up,” says Louris. “It seemed to fit with some of the songs and took on a life of its own. I suppose she could have heard the announcement clearly, but it’s unlikely. I think it’s one of those misheard things which can work well for lyric writing too. You hear things and make them your own.”

Thirty years down the road, Louris says his love for songwriting continues to inspire him.

“It’s what I do is write songs,” he says, adding that the Jayhawks plan to go back into the studio in 2017. “It’s what I feel like I’m best at. The fact that we have enough fans to keep us going helps too. We are something of a cult band. That also means that there are people who are rabid fans.

We’re important to them. As long as there are songs coming out, I’m still interested. I don’t have any interest in just going around and strictly playing the old stuff.”

To celebrate the label’s 10-year anniversary, the U.K. metalcore band Asking Alexandria has embarked on a headlining tour in support of its new album, The Black. The disc shows new singer Denis Stoff’s incredible range as he alternately screams and croons on tunes such as the title track and “The Lost Souls.” Tonight’s six-band bill celebrates Sumerian’s decade of delivering bands that Alternative Press can put on its cover. Dopapod/Pigeons Playing Ping Pong: Growing in stature and talent since 2014’s Never Odd or Even, Dopapod have reached that point where they’ve developed their own language as a band, their own cultural framework. The band forged a tight-knit sense of musical improvisation, and their songs have taken on lives of their own as “jam vehicles” and fan favorites.

The band has become a community.

Furthermore, just this past September, Neal “Fro” Evans, the band’s original drummer, return to his post. The chemistry thickens!

Skinny Lister/Lincoln Durham/ Trapper Schoepp: Since issuing its full-length debut, Forge & Flagon, in 2013, the U.K. punk band Skinny Lister has been plenty busy. After Forge & Flagon’s release, it toured with Flogging Molly and played big festivals such as Coachella. Last year, it issued its second full-length, Down on Deptford Broadway, and has been on the road in support of it ever since its release. Band members come from all over England. They met in London and the group came together in 2009. Lorna Thomas’ brother, singer-mandolin player Max Thomas, initially formed the band with singer-guitarist Dan Heptinstall; the two knew each other from playing folk clubs in Greenwich, an old naval town that’s just down the river from London.

They put the group together and started playing traditional tunes at house parties. With Down on Deptford Broadway, which the band recorded at historic Rockfield Studios in Wales with producer

Ted Hutt (Dropkick Murphys), the band honed its songwriting skills.

Album opener “Raise a Wreck,” features fervent call-and-response vocals and the tender “Bonny Away” allows Thomas to show off her supple voice. “Trouble on Oxford Street,” a song about a real brawl that involved Heptinstall and a gang of punks, sounds like vintage Clash. Expect a rowdy performance tonight at the Grog, a venue which the band plays often.

C-NOTES MOSSOM ISSUES ANTHEM FOR INDIANS

By Jeff Niesel LOCAL SINGER-BASSIST DAVID Moss, who heads up the local power duo Mossom, has deep ties to Northeast Ohio. He grew up in Amish country in Geauga County and moved back to Northeast Ohio in 1999 after attending college out of state.

As a tribute to the Tribe’s first trip to the World Series in nearly 20 years, he’s released the hard-driving anthem “Tribe Rallycry,” which he’s offering as a free download.

“It’s our thank you for the energy and excitement this team has brought our fans and our city in a year we are truly living the dream,” he says in a press release. “As some of you may know, [Mossom drummer] Russ Herbert is a former minor league player, who spent a decade on the mound with White Sox, Phillies and Astros clubs. [He] now currently supports local heroes as a pitching coach here in Greater Cleveland.”

The Tribe’s quick run through the first two rounds didn’t make it easy for the guys to crank out the tune.

“We had to move fast to keep pace with the sweeps and a victorious series against the Jays,” says Moss, adding that he tracked his vocals immediately following the Tribe’s ACLS victory. “Hats off and special thanks to multi-platinum producer and dear friend, Michael Seifert, who brought the magic.”

ANNIVERSARY PARTY Founded in 1912 by Almeda Adams, the Music Settlement ranks as one of the nation’s oldest community schools of music. It has provided early childhood education since 1955 and music therapy since 1966. To celebrate its 50th anniversary of offering music therapy, the Music Settlement will host a free concert on Sunday, Nov. 6, and a ticketed event the following evening.

At 3 p.m. on Sunday, the Music Settlement will host a concert as part of its Arts for Us series, which provides “a way for people with special needs to enjoy high-quality cultural experiences with their families and caregivers in a welcoming environment.” The

concert, which takes place at the Glick Recital Hall at the Music Settlement’s University Circle campus (11125 Magnolia Dr.), will feature the music therapists of the TMS Center for Music Therapy performing as a group and as soloists. The concert is open to the public.

Then, on Monday, Nov. 7, the Music Settlement will offer tours of the music therapy studios at the Music Settlement’s University Circle campus.

There will also be a special recognition honoring the first director of music therapy, a keynote address and performances by clients of the Center for Music Therapy.

“We’ve trained interns and supervised students, helping to prepare subsequent generations of music therapists,” says Ronna Kaplan, the second leader ever of the TMS Center for Music Therapy, in a press release. “We have contributed to the body of literature regarding music therapy both in MT journals and journals or organizations of related professions; plus, we’ve been a model for other like institutions.”

The evening’s honoree will be Anita Louise Steele Markland, MM, MT-BC, the first director of music therapy at the Music Settlement.

“Louise was a leader in our profession and her work was groundbreaking,” Kaplan says. “It will be a distinct pleasure and privilege to honor her for her contribution to music therapy at large as well as her leadership at the Music Settlement.”

Michael Silverman, Ph.D, MT-BC, and director of music therapy at the University of Minnesota, will provide the keynote address. The evening will also feature musical performances by clients of the Center for Music Therapy, some of whom have been achieving therapeutic goals for decades through music therapy at TMS. “Just because someone has a disability does not necessarily mean that they have a disability in music,” Kaplan says. “For example, the percentage of individuals with diagnoses on the autism spectrum who have perfect pitch is higher than in the general population.”
