UPFRONT SHAKER HEIGHTS SUSPENDS TWO STUDENTS FOR EXPOSING RACIST COMMENTS, PROTESTS ENSUE

THIS WEEK

IN AN ILLUMINATING MOVE last week, Shaker Heights High School top brass decided to suspend two students who had a hand in exposing another student’s racist comments in the wake of the presidential election.

The controversy began through a series of screenshots taken via Snapchat and Twitter: One student posted online that she did not support black rights, “because they don’t work for it and as a culture scary, violent, rude and needy. They expect to be catered to.”

The two students who publicly shared those comments — Elena Weingard and Myahh Husamadeen — were suspended by the school district for “disruptive behavior.”

The student who originally posted those comments has not been disciplined.

According to a text from a Shaker Heights teacher sent to Scene, “Parents were screaming at each other. The white girl is fearing for her life” (referring to the student who first posted the prejudiced messages). The teacher added that students have been heard harassing others at school, citing at least one student “being called a fag and a n lover.”

On Friday, students participated in a walkout — “partly in reaction to the presidential election, but also in protest of disciplinary action against two students,” according to The Shakerite. Students walked through the halls, chanting “Fuck Donald Trump” and “We need justice.”

Ahead of the planned protest, the district posted this message: “We

have been made aware that some students may be planning a walkout at noon to express dissatisfaction with a student issue. However, we want you to know the student issue has been resolved with all parties.

The law doesn’t allow us to discuss student issues with the public.”

The Shakerite shared students’ reactions following the week’s events: “I was shocked and disturbed by the texts but even more by the school’s reaction,” said junior Molly Amolsch. “The student body, myself included, wanted justice, but the school seemed to want to shut down the outspoken students. It was wrong that they were disciplined and [the student who made the comments] wasn’t. Elena and Myyah have the support of their peers, even if the school doesn’t want to support their own teachings.”

Shaker Heights High School dismissed students early on Monday, just prior to our print deadline.

Police were searching the building after three anonymous bomb threats had been called into the school.

Nonetheless, administrators told the public that there was “no evidence of a credible threat.”

Ohio has been fumbling its lethal injection protocol for years — dating back most notably to a failed execution in 2009 — and a series of events are about to collide in a most unpredictable manner.

Ronald Phillips was sentenced to death for the 1993 rape and murder of his girlfriend’s 3-yearold daughter. He is scheduled to die on Jan. 12, 2017, the first state execution since the widely criticized lethal injection of Dennis McGuire. Last week, Phillips once again asked the state to delay the execution. He’s raising questions about the state’s three-drug “cocktail,” and he’s not alone in his legal concerns.

Casting Phillips’ personal history to the side for a moment — and recognizing how often the public conflates inmates’ criminal cases with the ramifications of subsequent civil litigation — it’s worth a moment or two to analyze the circuitous path Ohio has taken in its capital punishment policies.

Phillips’ latest court fi ling, two months out from his scheduled death, lends an important opportunity.

For years, Ohio used a blend of three drugs to execute death row inmates, and, for years, reports showed that the drug combination frequently caused painful, prolonged deaths. The Eighth Amendment was cited in critiques, and Ohio Revised Code mandates that execution protocol “quickly

and painlessly cause death.”

In 2009, executioners spent two hours prodding and stabbing Romell Broom with needles.

They could not find a vein, and the execution was called off. (“I tried to assist them by helping to tie my own arm,” Broom later recounted.) The event prompted some governmental soul-searching, and the state decided to abandon its three-drug mixture in favor of a single barbiturate, like pentobarbital or sodium thiopental.

The state insisted that complete secrecy was needed to obtain those drugs and that the public was to be shut out of all information on the matter of lethal injection protocol.

State lawmakers agreed.

In 2014 — after failing to procure those drugs, and instead using the sedative midazolam in another questionable combination — the state executed Dennis McGuire. He gasped and snorted audibly and took more than 15 minutes to die once the drugs were injected, once again placing scrutiny on how Ohio was carrying out its executions.

Last month, the state surprisingly announced a return to a three-drug mixture — this time including midazolam, along with rocuronium bromide, a paralytic drug, and potassium chloride, which stops the heart — just in time for its first execution in three years: Ronald Phillips.

leaders] have now made clear that they didn’t mean anything they said,” Phillips asserts in his latest request to delay his death. He alleges that the known properties of midazolam and the state’s history make it so that executions cannot be carried out in a constitutional manner. “There are no safeguards — training, IVs, etc.

A jury trial has been requested on certain claims in Phillips’ latest complaint.

“With this new execution procedure, Ohio is moving backward toward a procedure that poses greatly increased risks of pain and suffering,” Allen Bohnert of the Federal Public Defender’s Office said last month.

STILL NO UPDATES ON PUBLIC SQUARE. WHAT IS THE CITY EVEN DOING? Thanks to publicsquander.com, anyone with an internet connection can now monitor in real time the money that RTA is losing due to the re-routing of buses on Public Square. As of Tuesday at noon, that value had eclipsed $448,000.

The new Public Square was unveiled to wide acclaim immediately before the Republican National Convention in July. It was scheduled to open to bus traffic on August 1. Recall that the Square was designed specifically with bus traffic in mind. A 2012 study recommended keeping Superior Avenue open to buses, having considered alternatives. It pegged the costs of re-routing buses around RTA’s most important hub at $1,550,000 annually.

But Frank Jackson, who

always preferred the idea of a “unified” Public Square, and his administration, have refused to allow buses to return. In the intervening three-plus months, Jackson’s spokesmen have claimed that the city is “meeting with stakeholders” and “discussing the situation” before they move forward on a decision — closing the Square to buses on weekends has been the compromise speculated among City Hall folks for months.

But we suspect that there’s no official movement, and hasn’t been for some time. Jackson has said before that he often has his spokespeople spit out stock phrases to the media if he hasn’t developed an opinion, or else to buy time, and that’s what this feels like. RTA remains in the dark and continues to eat the costs, even as it’s staring a growing financial crisis in the face. RTA’s spokesperson has not yet responded to Scene’s most recent request for comment.

When Scene requested an update from the city last week, we asked that, if they still claimed to be meeting with stakeholders, they provide a schedule of meetings and the stakeholders who attended. Dan Williams, the city’s media relations

director, was out of the office at the time, but replied over the weekend that there were “no new updates.”

Publicsquander.com links to the Ohio Organizing Collaborative, where concerned residents can send a letter to Frank Jackson. The site is an outgrowth of the Sunlight Foundation’s Transparency Camp, hosted in Cleveland last month, and was created by Melanie Mezanec.

FAT HEAD’S BREWERY TO EXPAND SIGNIFICANTLY “We’ve really outgrown our space — and I’m really proud of that,” Matt Cole, brewer-owner of Fat Head’s, tells Scene. “When I hit this roadblock, I started looking at other buildings.”

Cole managed to find just the spot, an 8-acre site just off I-71 and Bagley Road in Middleburg Heights.

When all the construction is complete, the new brewery will have 75,000 square feet within which to work, triple the space of the current production facility that Fat Head’s opened in 2012.

What’s more, the company will have another 50,000 square feet into which they can expand down the road. Fat Head’s opened its North

Olmsted brewpub in 2009.

Costing north of $10 million, the ambitious project will net a 75-barrel brewery with packaging line, restaurant and patio.

“It’s a big undertaking and hopefully the last brewery that I ever have to build,” Cole adds. “It’s kind of fun to be able to design it from the ground up. We’re finally going to be able to upgrade to a new German brewhouse, a new packaging line, a new canning line, a kegging line … .”

The new setup will facilitate the production of up to 150,000 barrels of beer per year.

“It will put us within the top 50 breweries in the country,” Cole adds.

“It might take us five or 10 years to get there.”

The shiny new brewhouse will be prominently exposed behind the taproom bar, but guests will have amazing views of the entire process, Cole says.

“We’re setting it up so you can do self-guided tours that horseshoe people around the whole process, from open fermentation to malt handling and hop storage to canning, packaging and kegging.”

Unlike the current production brewery and taproom, the new

one will have a full-service 225seat restaurant and beer hall with attached 3,000-square-foot patio.

Guests in both spots will be able to enjoy Texas-style barbecue like pulled pork, ribs and brisket prepared in a traditional manner.

The project is expected to take a year. During the process, Cole says that he intends to find a taker for his current brewery.

“Not only are we going to try and create a new brewery, but we’re going to try and keep this existing brewery functioning as is,” he says.

Faces of CLE by Laura Wimbels For the past two years, local photographer Laura Wimbels has been documenting Cleveland through portraits of its people.

The Cleveland Comedy Festival Now in its ninth year, the Cleveland Comedy Festival returns to Playhouse Square tonight with comedy performances and contests and free comedy happy hours. Cleveland Stories Dinner Parties Earlier this year, Music Box Supper Club launched Cleveland Stories Dinner Party, a weekly series that pairs fine food with storytelling. The series aims to help raise awareness of the mission of the Western Reserve Historical Society’s new Cleveland History Center. The club’s owners consider the Cleveland History Center to be “one of the most interesting museums in Cleveland” and “an unknown gem that Clevelanders should know more about and support.” The goal of the Cleveland Stories Dinner Party is to “bring to life some of the fun, interesting stories about Cleveland’s past — from sports, to rock ’n’ roll, to Millionaires’ Row.” Each week features a guest speaker and a custom prix fixe menu — a full three-course meal for only $20. The popular series resumes tonight at 7:30 with Funky Winkerbean creator Tom Batiuk, an Akron native and Kent State University grad. Admission is free.

The Third Annual International Exhibition Each year, Harris Stanton Gallery presents new acquisitions from gallery owner Meg Harris’ trips to Europe.

Jim Tews A former Clevelander, comedian and writer Jim Tews, the man behind The New York Times bestseller Felines of New York, is a rising star in the comedy world. He made his standup television debut on Last Comic Standing and has been featured in an episode of Louie. He was one of 2011’s “New Faces” at Just For Laughs Montreal and has performed at the Bridgetown Comedy Festival and the Eugene Mirman Comedy Festival as well as at the SF Sketchiest. Tews also recently created, co-wrote and starred in The Undone Sweaters web series about “a sociophobic Weezer cover band.” Funny or Die and Nerdist.com posted the series. As if that weren’t enough for the comic’s resume, Tews also created the HBO Labs’ web series The Opener and recently directed Make Fun, a feature length documentary about Cleveland’s independent comedy scene. The Blood of Jesus The film and video distribution company Kino Lorber has worked for years on a DVD boxset of early, regionally made African-American films. The boxset has finally arrived, and this month the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque will screen DCP versions of some of the best titles. At 5 p.m. today, you can catch one of the most successful “race” films of all time, The Blood of Jesus. Set in a rural village, the film focuses on an angel of god and an agent of satan as they fight over a woman’s soul. During this period, works on paper were increasingly valued, collected and exhibited. As the exhibition reflects, the period was marked by richly diverse creativity and experimentation in the use of these materials. Almost Like Being in Love: The Songs of Lerner & Loewe Often considered the last of the great Romantics, lyricist Alan Jay Lerner and composer Frederick Loewe wrote four of the most renowned musicals of all time: My Fair Lady, Camelot, Brigadoon and Gigi. They wrote for stars such as Rex Harrison, Julie Andrews, Richard Burton and Leslie Caron. The Musical Theater Project’s Almost Like Being in Love: The Songs of Learner & Loewe pays tribute to the two writers. Vinyl Night While sales of CDs continue to decline, vinyl has seen a resurgence.

In fact, the recent Jack White album became the fastest-selling vinyl album since Nielsen Soundscan began compiling vinyl sales figures in 1991. Jukebox owner Alex Budin has described his 1,350-square-foot music-focused bar in the Hingetown ’hood as “a place where people can expect to hear and learn about music of multiple genres, all of which is concentrated in a constantly evolving jukebox.” In keeping with that spirit and recognizing the burgeoning popularity of vinyl, the club hosts a vinyl night every Tuesday that serves as a listening party for new releases.

The ArtSpot also showcases student work from the CIA at regular intervals year-round. usually start with a CIA alumni party, offering students an extra opportunity to network and gain crucial firsthand insight from artists, designers and industry professionals who were once in their position.

“On the trip, students visit museums, Chelsea and Lower East Side galleries, artists’ studios, and spend time at the Armory show,” says Michael Meier, lecturer in painting, drawing and foundations at CIA, as well as director of the ArtSpot student gallery. Together with the painting department at CIA, Meier helps organize the 100 Show. “We also often meet with curators and art professionals who talk about their time and experience in New York as well as give tours and talks about exhibitions and projects they are involved with. In 2014, we were given a tour and curatorial walkthrough by Michelle Grabner when she curated the fourth floor of the Whitney Biennial. This offers students a level of insight into the market, curatorial and studio practice, and professional, artistic and creative living that surrounds the visual arts in a cultural center like New York.”

All works are priced at $100, and donated by CIA’s students, faculty, alumni and friends. Half of the proceeds help offset the costs and the other half goes directly to the artist. “We believe that artists should be compensated for their time and effort, especially in Cleveland,” Meier says.

The 100 Show takes place from 7 to 10 p.m. this Friday. Guests are encouraged to arrive early for the best selection; sales are on a first-come, first-served basis. However, any unsold work will remain on view and for sale through Nov. 25.

the work for me rather than trying to drive it a certain way. It’s been very interesting hearing other people’s interpretations, since they aren’t as literal as my previous work.”

Thanks to a grant from the Ohio Arts Council, Proffer was able to pursue this new direction, creating paintings that interpreted a visual representation of her illness and the interior of her body on a microscopic level.

“This was the second time I’ve worked on a solo show while recovering from surgery and being sick without knowing it; sometimes they are kind of like creatures or organisms reflected back at me of what’s going on with my own physiology,” Proffer says. “People always say they are amazed I can create a solo show while going through the things I have, but if I didn’t paint I’d be a typical invalid wallowing in my own misery and pity; that’s not how I operate. I was so grateful to finally make this a cohesive show, thanks to the Ohio Arts Council. My artist friends all think this is going to be my true work, and I hope it’s a good introduction.”

STAGE UPHILL STRUGGLE Anchored by great acting, Annapurna lacks something more at None Too Fragile Theater

By Christine Howey IS CLIMBING A MOUNTAIN, even one as daunting as the one mentioned in the title of this show, a good metaphor for a relationship between a man and a woman? Well, it’s difficult to make such an ascent, so you need commitment, trust and passion for the towering task at hand.

That is the image playwright Sharr White is working on in his two-person one-act, Annapurna, now at None Too Fragile Theater. And while the metaphor creaks pretty badly over the 100 minutes of this play, the actors do everything in their power to keep the script from tumbling down the craggy face of its own conceit.

Speaking of craggy, Ulysses is a middle-aged guy living in a squalid trailer somewhere in Colorado, waiting to die. We learn he was a former professor of poetry, known for his own books of verse, but his life went down the tubes when his wife, Emma, walked out on him with their young son. And now, Emma has shown up on his doorstep, 20 years later with suitcase in hand, looking for some sort of reconciliation.

It all begins with some bracing absurdity, as Ulysses stands there, literally butt-naked with an apron covering his tender bits as he cooks up some sausage (oddly not accompanied by sound effects of sizzling meat, which would make the scene more deliciously uncomfortable). Utilizing quick blackouts to indicate the passage of a few seconds or minutes, this first section of the play augurs well for what’s to come.

Unfortunately, White falls into the old playwriting trap of having characters talk about the past instead of fully occupying the present. So the remainder of the play involves Emma trying to bring some organization to Uly’s trailer while they rehash what happened way back then. Sure, White populates that past with plenty of details.

she and Peter ran as an on-the-side enterprise. About the friend from college who’s now writing (under a pseudonym) romance novels “with shirtless Indians on the cover.” But these anecdotes, full of scholarly pretension and some snobbery, feel like beads being threaded on a string that has no meaningful connection to what’s happening now.

Occasionally the play dips into some meaningful stuff, as when Emma admits that Ulysses was

always the “real thing,” and that he made it possible for her to forget about herself. “It was like we were in a cult of two,” she reminisces.

Are we supposed to assume that’s a good thing? Or is she just the kind of woman who transitions from one abusive relationship to another, trying to work out some inner demons? The playwright doesn’t give us enough information to make that judgment, and then Emma reveals that their now grown son

is on his way to visit his estranged dad. But since this is a two-person play, the audience can easily cop to the conclusion that he’ll never show up.

The dialogue is all well written but still a bit of a hard slog, made deceivingly palatable by two fine actors. As Ulysses, the usually elegant Jeffery Grover looks like five miles of bad road, playing this booze-addled guy who has multiple medical challenges and wears an oxygen tube attached to his nostrils.

Grover effectively portrays a college prof gone to seed, and he deftly lands most of the funny lines in the play.

He is paired with the talented Derdriu Ring as Emma, and Ring does what she can with a part that feels like it’s been written off-center from the start. We are never given a credible idea about what has drawn her to this isolated trailer and this, um, rather offensive man.

To stop the son? To settle accounts with her ex-husband? To do some housekeeping?

The challenge for both actors is that, apart from talking endlessly about the past, there is nothing clearly at stake for the two. The play’s structure — an arguing couple (one of whom is a professor) and an unseen child — creates an echo of a vastly better play: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? But while Edward Albee found a way to have his contestants fight volubly and compellingly in the moment, while referencing the past, White resigns his characters to mostly blabbing about the past. And when the present does intrude, it’s not in a particularly interesting way. (Uly has rotten meat in his mini-fridge, it smells bad, ecch.)

If the message is that love is a messy affair, and a big challenge, consider it received. But despite two fine performances and apart from the promising opening, this production as directed by Sean Derry lacks the necessary sizzle, sausage-wise and otherwise.

MOVIES THE CERTAIN AGE OF AQUARIUS … if you’re in the mood for a low-key Brazilian drama

By Sam Allard THE EASIEST THING TO SAY about Aquarius, the Brazilian drama that appeared at Cannes this year to rave reviews and opens Friday exclusively at the Cedar Lee, is that it’s a movie for the Cedar Lee crowd. We say that a lot here, but given the November bumper crop of Oscar-caliber films (looking at you, Arrival), and the Friday release of Fantastic Beasts, it’s doubtful that this long, intimate story about a woman in her 60s refusing to leave the apartment she’s occupied for decades will generate widespread interest in the Cleveland market, even among cinephiles who might be enticed by reports of the film’s “marvelous portraiture.” For our money, Aquarius doesn’t quite transcend its lead performance.

Which, make no mistake, is excellent.

Sonia Braga (who some readers might recognize as Soledad from the Netflix original series Luke Cage) plays Clara, an imperious matriarch who survived breast cancer in 1980 and now lives an unhurried life on the beach of Recife, Brazil. Her apartment, bursting with books and records and photos and wine, is an anthology of her life’s experience, a life of trail-blazing as a female journalist and music writer. But her apartment is under siege. A construction company and its sleek project manager have already acquired the neighboring properties and convinced the other residents

to move. Clara is the last remaining occupant of the Aquarius complex and vows to abandon her cherished home only upon her death.

Clara’s relationships — with her three children, her friends, her housekeeper — are thereafter colored and sometimes embittered by her stubbornness. Most everyone wants her to move on, to accept the company’s generous offer. And the company (less the generic Evil Corporation and more the specific assholes within) pressures her by increasingly bizarre means: personal appeals to friends and relatives, legal maneuvers, orgies in the unit directly above, shit on the stairs, rowdy church services in the corridors. But Clara is resilient in her opposition. She refuses to be bullied.

Braga, in the lead role, is a powerful force onscreen. In one tense scene with her children, she calls her daughter an “idiot” in one moment and cradles her in the next. In another, when the project manager mentions Clara’s children, she screams in his face that he has no character, an indictment with tremendous force coming from a woman of such entrenched principles. She is queenly and unrepentant, dancing to “Fat Bottomed Girls” while sipping red wine, going for daily swims even when the water is rough, lounging in her apartment’s hammock with her hair down, and eventually

digging up dirt on the construction company to fight fire with fire.

But the movie is languorous in its effect. The conflict between Clara and the company never has much urgency, the finale and the parking lot confrontation mentioned above excepted. Instead, it functions as a prism through which to view the other relationships of Clara’s life.

And indeed, as a deep, slow-burning portrait of a woman, Aquarius is a great success. You know her exceedingly well by the end of its two-hour-and-twenty-minute run time: You know her mind and, indeed, you know her body. But one wonders at certain tangents in the script: a lengthy toast, with graphic

sexual interludes, to Clara’s Aunt Lucia, at a birthday party in 1980 that opens the movie; a B-storyline about Clara’s nephew and his love interest from Rio; the memories of a maid from Clara’s youth. Do these enrich the portrayal of Clara or do they detract from it?

Writer-director Kleber Mendonça Filho, himself a product of Recife, has produced an accomplished character study regardless, of a woman who relishes the past but lives fiercely and forever in the present.

SPOTLIGHT: LEVELS FILM FEST WHEN LOCAL RAPPER DAVID “VIGATRON” Norris originally met local rapper Mark “BKA Watts” Watson at an open mic night at the B-Side Liquor Lounge in Cleveland Heights, the two discovered they not only shared a love for spoken word and hip-hop, but also for film.

“We performed there a bunch and we had a respect for each other and started seeing movies together,” says Norris, who has teamed up with Watson to present Levels Film Fest, a short film fest mostly devoted to music videos.

The festival takes place on Thursday, Nov. 17, at Tower City Cinemas. “When I proposed the idea for a film fest about a year or two ago, he

was into it. This is an opportunity for directors, artists and actors to have their shorts shown on the big screen at Tower City Cinemas.”

Norris says he initially was more interested in film than music. But he started out making albums and performing live at various rock and hip-hop clubs around town and developed a reputation for theatrical live shows. Now, he’s hoping some of that success will carry over into the film festival.

“I thought I would get music out of the way and then focus on film,” he says. “I really want to get into fi lm and acting so people can see that side of me. I’ve directed a few promos and

short vignettes over the years. That’s as far as I’ve been behind the camera. Eventually, I want to direct some bigger projects.”

The film festival, which takes place from 7 to 9 p.m., will feature 17 short fi lms. Eleven of them are music videos and the other six are skits. After the screening, participants and patrons will converge at the Take 5 Jazz Lounge for an after-party where Norris says he hopes they’ll discuss “future business.”

Tickets are $10 for the film fest and $10 for the Take 5 event, but only $15 for both events.

EAT A centuries-old Asian tradition is the main dish at Ushabu in Tremont

By Douglas Trattner I GLANCED OVER AT MY tablemate as she proceeded to add one ingredient after another into her pot of simmering broth. Vegetables, tofu, meat, udon noodles — all of it left to languish in the roiling concoction like some kind of Yankee Doodle Stew.

“You’re doing it wrong,” I said in a tone that I hoped would convey both import and alarm.

“I don’t care,” she countered with a sly grin that suggested that she really did not care.

It took a centuries-old Asian tradition to finally deliver a brand new dining experience to Cleveland.

Yes, a diner can find shabu-shabu at one or two restaurants in town, but the brand new Ushabu is a singleminded adventure built around Japanese hot pot. Every aspect of the tranquil, elegant and spare Tremont dining room has been configured around the interactive, immersive and pleasurable act of cooking meat in broth.

There might be no perfect way to enjoy shabu-shabu, but there most certainly is a wrong way. Diners will look to the servers at this young restaurant to guide them through the intimidating process, a conversation and exchange that will continue to develop and improve as time goes on, says general manager Michael Flaherty.

“With a tiny place and small staff you can really create a culture where you’re training people, bringing them up to be very attentive to detail, very hospitable and gracious.”

Traditionally, Japanese hot pot is a communal dining experience, one during which diners huddle around a single pot of simmering broth.

Though Ushabu gives each and every diner his or her own induction burner, thereby eliminating the need to commingle comestibles, the intimate 25-seat setting combined with the atypical endeavor preserves the collective nature of the meal.

Diners start by choosing a broth and a protein. The soup base options include chicken ginger, spicy miso and kombu-based (and veganfriendly) dashi. Those more familiar

with Chinese or Korean style hot pots will find that shabu-shabu broths are significantly milder in flavor (some use plain water) so as not to overpower the subtle tastes of the high-end meats and seafood.

That said, management has tweaked each recipe since opening day in response to comments.

Protein choices are Berkshire pork ($20), Ohio Wagyu beef ($23), Australian lamb ($20), a combination thereof ($22) and seafood ($26). A vegetable-only version ($17) also is available. Servers sink heavy enameled vessels into the recessed burner, fill each one with the appropriate broth, and set down a wide bowl brimming with spotless vegetables, a dish of steamed rice and a trio of sauces.

Once the pot hits a nice simmer, go ahead and drop in items like the assorted varieties of mushrooms, carrot, radish, corn and napa cabbage as they’ll cook slowly and help flavor the broth. But thinshaved meats like that beautifully marbled beef and pork literally cook in seconds, so a quick dip into the brew is all it takes. The same holds true for the thinly sliced scallops, flounder and salmon in the seafood option, but the hard-shelled clams and meaty head-on shrimp on the same plate will take longer to fully cook.

Cooked veggies, meats and seafood are dipped into sauces like sweet sesame, ponzu and soy-vinegar and eaten with rice. The tangle of thick and chewy udon noodles at the bottom of the vegetable bowl is typically saved for late in the meal, when it gets added to the broth and enjoyed last.

As subtle and sublime as the shabu-shabu is, it’s the small plates that arrive first that make the biggest impact. The stunning and innovative Asian dishes from chef de cuisine Jacob Cohen appear like art and unfold into delicious gratification. Sweet and briny clams ($10) are frothed with uni foam and garnished with “edible sand,” an umami-rich blend of panko, dried anchovies and shichimi togarashi.

Succulent cubes of seared Wagyu beef ($12) come with wasabi-spiked edamame puree. Scallop ($9), pork belly, quail egg and caviar somehow unite in perfect harmony. Taiwanesestyle five-spice chicken ($8) is paired with pickles and slaw.

Do yourself a favor and make reservations as early as possible.

Ushabu has just a few booths and a handful of seats at the bar. Smaller parties will be seated at the bar or paired with other small parties in booths. Who knows, your new friends might even share their

(BYOB for now) bottle of wine or sake with you.

Come January, the restaurant will add quicker lunches starring ramen and udon soups, donburi rice bowls, and crispy katsu plates.

As busy as Ushabu has been in the weeks since opening day, it will only get busier. It’s hard to imagine a more winter-friendly destination than this steamy little Asian schvitz.

CLEVELAND’S WEST SIDE HAS always been a melting pot of ethnic families and foods. At first, Italian and Irish immigrants dominated West Park, placed between West 117th Street and Rocky River Drive, filling the gap between Lakewood and Brookpark.

Today, the area boasts one of the highest concentrations of Middle Eastern immigrants, hailing from Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Syria, Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon. With more than an estimated 17,000 people of Arab ancestry living in Cuyahoga County, the area has become home to dozens of Arabic businesses, including fast food establishments, restaurants and groceries.

“We’re a neighborhood full of small businesses,” says Rachel Napolitano, neighborhood marketing specialist at the Bellaire Puritas Development Corporation. “There are few vacancies either commercial or industrial in our neighborhood.” Over the past months, the area has seen some beloved eateries go out of business, including Café Falafel and Cuisine du Cambodge. However, for every business that fails, two more seem to pop up.

“Immigrants tend to be very entrepreneurial because they can be their own boss; it’s an easier way to find employment. There are those opportunities in our neighborhood and we’re happy that immigrants continue to find our neighborhood a good place to start out in America,” Napolitano says as we prepare to take a tour of some of her favorite lunch spots she’s accumulated in the 13 years she’s worked for the CDC. Bylo Gyro Bob’s (14007 Puritas Ave., 216-252-8670) is our first stop.

Wedged between a cell phone store and a barbershop, the business has been in the same location since the 1980s though it has changed ownership. Three stand-up broilers take center stage behind the counter, where customers gaze up at a billboard-sized menu as eclectic as the community that frequents the store, especially during lunch.

Falafel, shawarma, spinach pies and stuffed grape leaves are

scattered throughout the menu, along with corned beef, kielbasa, catfish or perch sandwiches, and of course their gyros. Served on a fluffy piece of fresh pita with tomatoes and sauce, the seasoning as well as their homemade hot sauce are standouts on this sandwich.

Their daily special board advertises two gyros for $8.

An advertisement is taped to the wall for a neighborhood summit organized by Napolitano and her employers. “I think having a meal together is a great way for people to get to know each other, their neighbors. It’s a critical part of community building,” she says.

Next, we travel to Arabian Village Market (12926 Lorain Ave., 216-938-9260) where large pans of halal meats, fried vegetables, rice and everything Mediterranean await those craving lunch or dinner takeout. “It’s something different everyday,” the man assisting us says as he points to each dish, pronouncing the names slowly.

Maqluba and kofta are available today, along with many honey soaked pastries including baklava, lokma and mshabak. The store is also a grocery where specialty items can be purchased for a steal, like a bulk-sized container of dates for $5.

Further down Lorain is Assad’s Bakery (12719 Lorain Ave., 216-2515777, assadsbakery.com), founded by Mike and Fred Assad in 1989. The bakery specializes in fresh wholesale pita bread, similar to Aladdin’s.

Their grocery stocks specialty olive oils, cheeses, hummus, baba ghanouj and much more.

The Middle Eastern community within West Park is made up of refugees, first- and secondgeneration immigrants, and Americans with mixed ancestry.

Within this hotbed of cultural activity resides food too good to not do a little exploring on your own, if only to get acquainted with a few neighbors.

CHEF CHRIS DILISI AND HIS WIFE Krista were pioneers. Three years ago they took a chance on an exciting new neighborhood on the banks of the Cuyahoga. With the help of their landlords at the Wolstein Group and Fairmount Properties, the DiLisis opened Willeyville, a progressive American restaurant that made everything from scratch using the best possible ingredients.

The pair quietly closed the restaurant three weeks ago.

“We put everything we had into it: mentally, emotionally, financially,” Chris DiLisi says. “I spent 20 years honing my chops and waiting for this opportunity. But you have to follow the deal. I wish we could have written a better ending. It’s sad. I’m definitely sad about it.”

“Following the deal” means taking a chance on an untested location like Flats East Bank instead of holding out for a different location in, say, Tremont or Ohio City or Chagrin Falls.

“I think we were executing on a high level,” adds the chef. “I’ve never been more proud of the food we put out, the service has been great, the ambiance, I thought, was great. I mean, we hit on every single mark.

You put the restaurant in Hudson or Moreland Hills and we’re killing it, which is frustrating.”

Other East Bank closures have included Ken Stewart’s, Crop Rocks and Crop Sticks. New spots like Bold, Coastal Taco, Alley Cat, Flip Side, Big Bang, Beerhead and Punch Bowl Social have arrived. Margaritaville and Rascal Flatts are also coming soon.

New developments often take time to sort out, level off and find a groove.

But DiLisi says that he and his wife were not prepared to weather another cold and windy winter to find out.

“That area, at least at this point, is pretty challenging,” he says. “I also feel that there’s an oversaturation of the Cleveland market. It seems that every two weeks there are four more places opening, three others going down.”

nounced its winners for the Rising Stars Awards of the “Rust Belt” — their term — a region that includes Cleveland, Detroit and Pittsburgh. The awards “celebrate up-and-coming chefs and culinary professionals, who represent the vanguard of the contemporary American dining scene.”

Editors, writers and photographers from the online magazine visited the region this past spring, tasting the works of 130 chefs, pastry chefs, bartenders, sommeliers, brewers, coffee roasters and other culinary artisans.

“So many Rust Belt chefs left the region to train and work in Chicago, New York, and San Francisco, but at the end of the day, they came back because they believed in the potential of their hometowns,” Will Blunt, managing editor of StarChefs, explains.

“The Rust Belt’s industrial footprint left no clearly defined regional cuisine, making way for a diverse, vibrant, and idiosyncratic restaurant scene — one that’s open to a whole sway of immigrant influences,” adds editor Caroline Hatchett. “It’s a region marked by individualism and unencumbered by trends.”

Local winners like Brett Sawyer from The Plum and Will Hollingsworth from Spotted Owl are understandably thrilled to have been selected.

“We were insanely excited to even be considered for StarChefs,” says Sawyer. “To actually have been chosen among all of the great restaurants and talented chefs is an honor.”

The 21 award winners will be honored at a gala at the Westin Cleveland on Wednesday, Dec. 7, that will showcase their food and specialty products, along with beverage pairings and cocktails by the winning sommeliers and bartenders. General admission to the gala is $85. VIP tickets are $125 and include a private reception with cava and caviar. Tickets are available for purchase at starchefs. com.

MUSIC BRITISH INVASION Up-and-coming acts to play BBC Presents showcase

By Jeff Niesel THE INAUGURAL BBC PRESENTS tour of the U.S. features an eclectic lineup of bands including Izzy Bizu, Sundara Karma and Spring King. The bands all sound quite different from each other and should complement one another nicely on the tour.

Singer Izzy Bizu channels Amy Winehouse with her vintage sound, indie rockers Sundara Karma deliver righteous post-punk anthems, and the Manchester-based Spring King bills itself as “a small-scale, art-pop-punk project.” In separate transatlantic phone interviews, we spoke to Bizu, Sundara Karma singer-guitarist Oscar Pollock, and Spring King’s singer-drummer Tarek Musa about the tour.

Talk about the BBC Presents tour. It’s a really eclectic group of artists.

Bizu: I’m really excited because I’m going to be on the road with two different bands who are really indie and rocking. It will be interesting for me. It’s the first time we’ve ever toured America, and I’ve always wanted to go to cities like Detroit and Cleveland.

We’re going to tour in support of the new album.

Pollock: We’re very excited about Spring King

it. We’ve never played any shows in the States. We want to be on the road and meeting loads of really eccentric people. I’m making it very cinematic in my head. I’ll probably just be a hung over drunken mess.

Musa: It’s the first time the BBC has ever done anything like this where they brought three different bands together, which is really cool. The BBC plays us a lot. We’ve been putting out music for over three years and they’ve always been behind us. They have a channel for upcoming bands who want to showcase their music. It’s called “The BBC Introducing.” It brings a bit of

exposure to bands who don’t normally get radio airplay.

Talk about your background.

Bizu: Growing up in London was really cool. When I was 7, I moved out of London with my dad and I came back and I went to music college where I met my guitarist and we started writing music together.

When we were in college, you could pick what type of band you went into to do a band performance. We were both quite shy. It was our first year of college and no one knew each other very well. There was one practice session where I told him I liked his guitar licks. He liked the way I sang.

For the last exam, we played together and I thought he was a mad good guitarist. We were mates before we started in music. It was just based on jamming and having fun.

Pollock: We all met at school. I’ve known [bassist] Haydn [Evans] since I was 8, and we’ve all been together for about six years now.

Musa: I just finished university and had nothing to do. I always wanted to try my hand at writing music. I’ve always been on the other side of the glass doing the recording and engineering, but I wanted to try to write my own music. It started as a bedroom project. [Guitarist] Pete [Darlington] was living at my house at the time. He kept hearing the demos and convinced me to start a band. It spiraled from there really. Now, we’re

a fully fledged four-piece. The lineup we have now has been solid for the past three years. I play drums and sing lead vocals. It’s a Phil Collins thing. It’s a full body workout. It’s so hot on stage. My clothes are drenched for three days after the shows. It’s not exaggeration. We put the drum kit at the front of the stage and I get a riser. People are confused when there’s a drummer singing so you have to make it obvious. It works out.

A lot of people come to the shows and have never seen us but only heard the albums so they’re surprised. No one sees it as a novelty. It’s not intentional.

I used to play the guitar and three or four days before our first-ever show our drummer left. I just picked up the drums, which I already played anyway.

Who do you consider your influences?

Bizu: I like Amy Winehouse and Ella Fitzgerald and Marvin Gaye. My guitarist inspires me a lot when I start writing music too.

Pollock: They’ve changed a bit.

We listen to everything. I couldn’t tell you because we don’t control what comes out in the songs. You could say we listen to a lot of the Beach Boys but that’s not necessarily going to come out in the songs. When we first met, we listened to a lot of the Doors.

We never really got into BritPop, but recently I’ve grown to appreciate Blur.

MUSIC Clash. We all agree on the Clash. We grew up on bands like At the DriveIn and Fugazi. Somewhere along the line, the Clash became an obsession.

For me personally, I like the Beach Boys. I’m a massive Brian Wilson fan. I’m all about punk energy with pop sensibilities.

Talk a little about your new album. What were your initial songwriting sessions like?

Bizu: I left school early and I started writing the songs during a confusing time. The songs helped me get through it, and then I fell in love as well and all that happened and about all the consequences of that.

It’s funny growing up and having all these new feelings that I wasn’t used to before. Everything just happened all at once. I look back on it now and so much has changed since then.

That was two years ago. It’s almost like a diary of what had happened. If I hadn’t written the songs, I wouldn’t remember the things that I do now.

Pollock: I think it was a collection of songs we had at the time. It’s the most instant tracks we have on the album. They give a good impression of what we’re about right now. I don’t think the songs have been available in the States prior to the album’s release, though they were out in the U.K. Musa: It’s a mixed bag really. A lot of those songs had been written as demos a long time ago and the other half have been recorded at a studio. We’ve always recorded at my house. Everything we’ve done has been recorded at my house. It

essentially in a shed but a really cool shed. He had cool guitars. And some of it was recorded in my bedroom.

It’s a mix of stuff.

Pollock: We recorded a lot of the album in Berlin and some of it here near Oxford and in Brixton and some in a boat in London.

Musa: We got to the studio and because I was engineering the record, we didn’t need an assistant.

The studio provided one and he must have thought we were crazy. We recorded the drums in the studio but it was a residential studio and we recorded the guitars in the bedroom.

We didn’t even use a microphone on the guitars. We had it for three weeks and he couldn’t believe it because there was an amazing studio downstairs. Sometimes, it’s hard to get outside your comfort zone. We had finished one tour, and the next day we went to the studio. It was a chaotic time but it was great. The moment we finished the album, we went back on the road.

What do you have next on the horizon?

Bizu: The rest of the year will be beautiful. At Christmas I’ll get my family together and then there’s a European tour. So far, that’s as much as I know. I’ll have another single out by then. We do things by three months.

Pollock: Hopefully, more touring, to be honest with you. And focusing on album No. 2. We started writing the songs and I’m really excited about it. I think the new songs are just a little more us, if that makes sense, and a little more honest.

Musa: This is the last thing for the year and December is a laid-back affair. We want to take some time

proves you don’t need an expensive recording studio. When it came to the album, we were going to do it all at my house and my brother moved home and had a baby and I couldn’t make noise so we went to a professional studio for the first time ever. We did half the album there and half at my house. It was a very inspiring time for us. We just wrote “Rectifier” on the spot in the studio one night.

What about the studio sessions?

Bizu: We jammed in a room and played instruments and recorded as we went. Another place was

with our families. We’ve been nonstop since March. It’s going to be a laid-back December. I want to make the most of the U.S. tour. There are so many places I’ve never been.

I’ve never been to Ohio. All these drives will be interesting. I hear the weather will be freezing cold. I’ve been to Detroit, which is why we wrote a song called “Detroit.” My exgirlfriend is from there. I’m excited to be in the U.S. because I love it. I love the craft beer there. I’m ready for it.

MUSIC A PERFECT PAIRING R&B singer Maxwell aims to ‘keep soul alive’ with his King and Queen of Hearts tour

By Jeff Niesel EARLIER THIS YEAR, R&B/SOUL singers Maxwell and Mary J. Blige announced they would tour together for the first time on the King and Queen of Hearts World Tour, a 24show run of dates that comes on the heels of a dozen European dates.

Talking via phone from New York where he had just been the surprise guest at Harry Belafonte’s Many Rivers To Cross fest, Maxwell speaks enthusiastically about the pairing. “[Mary J. Blige] came up at a time when young kids were buying old records and making new things with them,” says Maxwell. “There was Biggie and Puff. It was such a ’90s thing. She blossomed and was able to sing with Bono and Andrea Bocelli and is known and respected. I think people thought she’d be around for a few months or maybe a year or two, but she has staying power. She’s definitely iconic, and her voice is a national treasure. We’ve been friends for a while, and we’ve been trying to make this happen. I bow to Mary.

The queen has all the moves in chess anyway. I think she’s special.”

Both have new albums to support.

Maxwell released the second installment of his musical trilogy, blackSUMMERS’night, earlier this year, and Blige has nearly completed her 14th studio album. Maxwell says the timing for the tour is “interesting.”

“R&B is currently popular within the boy-band world,” he says. “I’m a fan of everybody, by the way, and I have no beef with anyone, especially if you’re under 22. There’s no way I could be mad at you. They love R&B, but I feel like it got lost in the shuffle with pop and house, and all those things that have taken over. This is a way to reintroduce R&B to people. Mary and I are about keeping soul alive and getting people through their pain.

She’s badass, and I’m grateful to be doing this thing. I’m glad we put this together after four years of trying to make this happen.”

Born in Brooklyn to a Haitian mother and a Puerto Rican father, Maxwell says he never really sang in the church, though he did go to church several times a week.

“I was very devout,” he says. “I’m still Christian, but I have Jewish friends, and I have Muslim friends, so

it’s hard for me to think that they’d all be going to hell if they don’t believe what I believe. I come from a different state of spirituality now and have the idea that everyone can have their own idea of god. I love soul music and gospel and funk. It spoke to me as a kid. It’s never been a thing that I don’t care about. I kept working away trying to convince people that I have a little bit of that going on.”

When he started writing songs in his late teens, he took inspiration from a variety of secular sources.

“I would definitely say Prince and, of course, Marvin Gaye and Sade and Anita Baker, for some reason,” he says when asked about his influences. “I just loved [Baker’s] music. I feel like Mary [J. Blige] was the offspring of Anita Baker’s success because she was so jazzy.”

By the early 2000s, Maxwell had established himself as a major star in the R&B world. At that time, he also realized he had only three records left on his contract with Columbia, so he launched a trilogy that began with 2009’s BLACKsummers’night.

He’s just issued the followup, blackSUMMERS’night. With songs such as the atmospheric “All the Ways Love Can Feel,” the album features old-school soul and funk tunes that make it sound like it a product of the ’70s, even if the themes are quite contemporary.

“It was all spawned by deep psychological issues based on my issues with women and my mom,” says Maxwell when asked about the album. “It’s very cathartic to me. I’ve realized that I’ve healed through the songs. I think sonically we wanted to have more space with blackSUMMERS’night. It’s subtle. I don’t like to beat you over the head and guide the audience in that way. I have too much respect for intelligence of those who listen to what I do with the meanings of things. I think good songs tell you what they are and become what they’re supposed to be for the people who listen to them.

The third album will close this entire scenario in a very cool way I think.

You’ll go, ‘Aha!’ I at least hope you’ll go, ‘Ah.’” While Maxwell’s career includes Grammy and Soul Train Music Award wins, the singer says he’s most proud of the upcoming tour with Blige.

“For me, this tour is the highlight of my career,” he says. “I was shopping deals when Mary was on the radio every day. If she wasn’t on her own songs, she was coming up on a WuTang song or a song by Biggie or Puff.

Now, I get to go back in time, and I get to reintroduce our era not only to the people who are now reviving it — I look at fashion and I can’t believe what people are wearing again. The ’90s are very hot right now, and I feel like this is a good look right now. It’s great. It’s music-based and love-based. There’s no negativity. That’s what we’re here to express to the world.”

MUSIC A CASUAL AFFAIR Singer Peter Wolf takes a collaborative approach on his latest album

By Matt Wardlaw FOR PETER WOLF, MUSIC HAS long been a thing that fills a necessary space in his world. So as he was looking to launch his latest solo album, he decided to call it exactly what it is. “Music has always been my cure for loneliness and that’s where the title came in,” he shares during a recent phone conversation as he preped for the tour that will bring him back to the Music Box. “A Cure For Loneliness is not unlike the previous records I’ve had, Sleepless, Midnight Souvenirs or Fool’s Parade,” he says. “I start to do some writing and thinking about it, and I gather the same talented artists, and we just get together. I love collaboration, and I love their input, so for me, it’s a very exciting process, just seeing certain songs come alive.”

The process of bringing those songs to life is something that Wolf and the members of his band experimented with a lot during the period that they were working on material for the new album, which was released in April. They recorded the songs live on stage and also in the studio and went through and cherrypicked their favorites.

“Every song on there has been recorded live. The only argument we had, there was a song called ‘Fun for a While,’ and some people really liked the live version and some people liked the studio,” he says. “Bob Ludwig, who is a great mastering engineer, [worked on it]. I said, ‘Bob, you make the decision. Because there seems to be a civil war here,’ and he picked the studio version. But yeah, we had everything live and studio. It was just a unique way of doing it, because the same band I tour with is the same band I use to record.”

The resulting studio recordings retain a similarly loose and casual feel next to the live versions. No matter what the setting might be, it’s hard to imagine Wolf and the band getting hung up on anything for too long. “We enjoy getting together,” he confirms.

“We bring enough ammunition to keep things lubricated and the fun happening.”

As is the case with a lot of Wolf’s solo work, the material has an introspective feel to it, and that’s something which he’s always looked for in the music that he enjoys

personally, although he realizes that there is a certain balancing act to find the right mix.

“I enjoy the musicians, the artists that you can connect the singer with the song. I think that’s why the early Stones and the early Beatles were so kind of powerful, is because they seemed personal,” he says. “I think that’s why someone like Dylan is so powerful, or Leonard Cohen or even the great blues artists and the great country artists. You know, the old honky tonk guys, if they were singing about heartbreak, you really believed

unexpected update. Of the 12 tracks on the new record, the well-known classic is one of two songs from the live recordings that made it to the final album. If Wolf had gotten his way, it might have just remained as a fun spontaneous moment that happened one night on stage.

“We were sitting around. I had the pleasure of getting to meet a couple of times, Bill Monroe, who many consider the father of bluegrass.

We were doing some Bill Monroe songs backstage and we had some of Kentucky’s Finest, a bottle of that,

that it was a life experience for them.

That’s the kind of music that I value most. So in writing, you try to do both.

You try to do things that hopefully has some content to it and also, in the spirit of rock and roll, there’s something about ‘Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On’ or ‘Rip It Up.’ You know, sometimes getting too introspective is not necessarily the best thing ever. You try to find the right balance.”

He reaches back into his J. Geils Band history to give “Love Stinks” an

and we were all having some fun,” he recalls. “I started going into ‘Love Stinks,’ and we decided to go out and do it. It happened to be one of the nights that we were recording and we went from a Bill Monroe song into ‘Love Stinks’ and when we were thinking of songs to put on the album, everybody when they heard that, they said, ‘Oh, you’ve got to put that on.’ I said, ‘Ah, I’m not sure about that.’ But I was vetoed, so there it is.”

Wolf and his Geils colleagues are

once again on the list of nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

This is their fourth time on the ballot and he calls it “a great honor to be nominated,” quipping that, “Maybe the fourth time’s the charm!”

He has a long association with the Hall, inducting Jackie Wilson (“one of my heroes”) in 1987 and more recently, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, during the 2015 ceremony in Cleveland. And if asked, it’s likely that he’d be happy to do the honors again for Joe Tex, the Southern soul singer who has been eligible since 1990 and is nominated this year for the fifth time to potentially be included with the 2017 class.

“Amen!” he says, when presented with the suggestion. “It’s funny, because Don Covay put together this group called the Soul Clan and Joe Tex was part of it. I got to spend some time with Joe Tex. You know, he wrote a lot of great songs and produced a lot of great stuff. He is somewhat forgotten unfortunately, but it’s great to see his name on the ballot.”

A Cure for Loneliness brings out a song from Wolf’s collaborations with the late Covay, who passed away in January 2015. It’s one that he had forgotten about and when he rediscovered it, he thought it would be a good candidate to record with another one of his musical heroes.

Wolf heads back out to the “highways and byways, doing what rock and rollers do” on his latest round of touring. Coming back for a second round at the Music Box on the heels of his sold-out show there in June, Wolf guarantees a good time will be had by all.

“I really like to move the set around and I think there’s seven or eight solo albums and there’s a whole bunch of repertoire from the Geils stuff and a bunch of songs that I just haven’t recorded or got yet, so there’s a mixture of all of it and I just hope that it will be an interesting, enjoyable evening of rock and roll,” he says. “I know for one thing, there’s going to be some great musicians on stage. That I can guarantee.”

MUSIC GOOD GROOVES Medeski Martin & Wood celebrate 25th anniversary with two On Air Studio shows

By Jeff Niesel WHEN THE JAZZ/GROOVE OUTFIT Medeski Martin & Wood first came together some 25 years ago, keyboardist John Medeski admits he didn’t really think that the band, which also includes bassist Chris Wood and drummer Billy Martin, would be still kicking some 25 years later.

To celebrate their anniversary, the guys are playing two shows at On Air Studio. Each night, special guests and lifelong collaborators such as guitarist Marc Ribot, trumpeter Steven Bernstein and percussionist Cyro Baptista will join them to jam.

Turntablists DJ Logic and DJ Olive are also on the bill.

“From the beginning, we knew that we would stop doing it if it ever ceased to be creatively engaging or stopped growing or stopped being fun,” says Medeski in a recent phone interview.

“We toured around the U.S. and played a lot of rock festivals and opened for a lot of bands. We saw what can happen if you are stuck playing the same stuff for 40 years and you all hate each other and are still getting on stage together. We didn’t want to do that. We didn’t even talk about it. It was never an option. I wouldn’t have expected that it would still be fun every time we play, but in retrospect I’m not surprised considering the chemistry and the kind of music we play and who we are as people. We’re a trio, and there’s no major ego in the band.”

In the ’90s when the band started performing at downtown New York clubs such as CBGBs Gallery, the Knitting Factory and Tonic, the scene was already going strong.

“I don’t know if I would call it jazz,” says Medeski of that scene. “It was a lot of improvisational music. It was creative music that had nothing particular to define it. There was an aesthetic that was happening, but it didn’t require certain chords or anything. It was wide open. All of us were attracted to that. As much as I love jazz and study jazz, what I love about jazz is its spirit more than the notes and rhythms that define it. All of us are like that. The spirit of jazz is about being music in the moment and for the moment. When you just copy what someone did 30 years ago note for note and phrase for phrase, you’re not really in the moment, are you? We just gravitated to the downtown scene

because it was more creative and more fun and more alive. It was what the jazz scene was like in the 1950s. It’s that spirit.”

On its first album, 1992’s Notes from the Underground, the band adhered to jazz-based time signatures but added woozy horns to songs such as “Uncle Chubb” and turned to improv for tunes such as “United,” suggesting an ability to jam and mix genres. ”We were excited about it, and it inspired us to go out on the road,” says Medeski when asked about the album.

“What we did on the road got us our first record deal with Gramavision and that grew until we ended up on Blue Note. We had great runs with

normally hosted indie rock acts.

“Honestly, [the jazz clubs were] stuffy and pretentious, and we wanted to play for our people,” he says. “We didn’t want to play for critical guys with beards. We wanted to play for people who were looking for something relevant, which jazz was at one point before it was co-opted by the historical society.”

On 1996’s Shack-man, the band delved into soul and funk. The pulsating organ riffs on the funky album opener, “Is There Anybody Here That Love My Jesus,” suggest the sonic shift.

“That was one aspect of our music,” explains Medeski. “Each record has

each record company we were with. It was challenging because no one knew how to market us and we had to do that ourselves. We are lucky to have a record deal at all given the climate now.”

At first, the band played jazz clubs.

a certain focus. We try to make our records be records. Every live show was available and would be traded. The idea of doing a record that was live seemed stupid because everything was out there.”

Shack-man evolved out of the band’s winter retreats in Hawaii in

the depths of winter.

“We would spend January and February in the jungle with no electricity,” he says of the album. “We’d play music and swim. We worked on our rhythmic connection. We would groove for hours and play the same thing over and over. That was what that space provided. The shack itself had an incredible resonance with the thin plywood. When the next record came up, we took the budget and recorded there. The record company was terrified and didn’t trust us so they crimped our budget. We used our budget to buy solar panels and inverters and rent some equipment. We spent two weeks carving a record out.

That’s the record that happened. In our weird way, we were trying to create musical nuggets and not stylistically like the Meters. Conceptually, it was our version of that sort of thing without a lot of soloing.”

Over the years, members have played with various side projects, and Medeski says that has helped to keep the band together.

“It helps everything,” he says.

“We’ve been growing and then cultivating our chemistry and language as a band. By doing other things, we have things to add to it.

Getting better as musicians comes into play when we create music together.

It’s key. I say it all the time, that it’s why we’re still together.”

Medeski recently formed the group Saudade with Chino Moreno (Deftones, Team Sleep, Palms, and Crosses), guitarist Dr. Know (Bad Brains), bassist Chuck Doom (Crosses, Team Sleep) and drummer Mackie Jayson (Cro-Mags and Bad Brains).

As far as the anniversary shows go, Medeski says they’ll be a “celebration.”

“There will be older music brought into play,” he says. “We have different people each night. We have guitar players and horn players. We’ll cover a lot of material we’ve done in the past as well as create some new music for the shows. There will also be spontaneous compositions that will only be available that night. We’re filming the shows and they’ll be part of a documentary about us. These will be our only MMW shows this year so we will be pumped.”

Thee Oh Sees/New Planet Trampoline/Ma Holos: Drop a nickel in the slot and the robot band jerks to life, creaking out lo-fi garage-folk tunes with a sinister air. Such is the early work of San Francisco-based Thee Oh Sees, who (at that time) sounded more like an off-kilter group of banjo-plucking toothless Joes than a cornerstone of the 21st century garage rock revival.

Now known for raucous rock shows where mosh pits shake floors, the band still delivers bits of that folky drawl. Originally referred to as OCS, which stood for Orinoka Crash Suite, or Orange County Sound, or whatever other acronym singerguitarist John Dwyer dreamt up that day, the group released its first album as Thee Oh Sees in 2006. Ever

since, the band has put out at least one album per year, and sometimes two, for a total of 15 releases to date.

This year is no exception with A Weird Exits dropping in August and An Odd Entrances poised for release on the day of the band’s Cleveland appearance. Thee Oh Sees’ 2015 show at the Beachland sold out, so don’t hold onto that nickel for too long. (Bethany Kaufman) 9 p.m., $17.

Alejandro Escovedo/Jesse Malin: Veteran Austin-based singerguitarist Alejandro Escovedo has persevered through three decades of rough-and-tumble rock ’n’ roll and lived to make an album about it. He’s seen his ballyhooed punk/ garage bands the Nuns, Rank and File, and the True Believers come and go. He’s also eluded death after a really bad bout with hepatitis. All the while, he’s delivered one stellar album after another but hasn’t had anything resembling a hit. And yet, he’s a phenomenal live performer.

His last album, Burn Something Beautiful, taps into his garage and punk rock sensibilities. The music’s invigorating and Escovedo always delivers in the live setting. (Niesel) 7:30 p.m., $25 ADV, $28 DOS. Music Box Supper Club.

An Evening with War: Consider tonight a throwback night at the Kent Stage with Southern California legend, War. Known for the infectious and socially conscious hits, “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” and “Low Rider,” and for bending and blending genres, War has long since solidified their place as musical legends since they released their first album in 1970. War, which always had a revolving door of backup and featured musicians, has gone through some serious lineup changes since a dispute between band members and their management in the mid-1990s. Leroy “Lonnie” Smith, the only remaining original member, picked up the pieces and carried on the music and the message with a worthy backing band. By Jeff Niesel MEET THE BAND: James McKeivier (vocals, guitar) BACK AFTER A BREAK: McKeivier grew up in the Canton area and started writing songs back then. He moved out of town and then back to the area in 2003. He began writing songs once again and really started taking the craft seriously in 2008. “I met up with some old friends then, and we started a band,” he says when asked about what drew him back to singing and songwriting. “I always wanted to be a songwriter. I was influenced by the Beatles and Bob Dylan. [The 1967 documentary film] Don’t Look Back was a big influence on me.” Another local singer-songwriter, Bill Fox, encouraged McKeivier along the way.

He was roommates with a friend and when Fox got back into playing out again, McKeivier played alongside him in 2008 and 2009. He recorded his first album in Fox’s basement. “We used anything we had around,” he says of that album. “We had friends stop in and they would end up on the record. It was a lot of fun putting that together and getting it out there.

Releasing it was just a document of what we had been doing. It was really an afterthought. We recorded about 20 songs but only 10 songs made the album.”

A PROPER LP: On The Lucky Ones, his second full-length album and first proper LP, McKeivier shows off his supple voice on sparse songs that recall Dylan, the Byrds and Leonard Cohen. Local guitarist Stelianos Simantriris (Charles Hill Jr) and Cleveland multi-instrumentalist BillMike (Forgotten Souls of Antiquity) back him on the disc. The tracks “Because of You” and “Only in Dreams” have an alt-country feel,

but the album also includes pop (“If We Are Set Free”) and jazz (“How We Wonder”). McKeivier says he started writing the songs for it about two or three years ago. The rest were written in the past year. He’s been recording for about a year. “I wrote them by myself in my room, and worked with BillMike on the recording,” he says. “The recording was smooth.

We recorded my vocals and guitar in one-take tracks. In two short sessions, we had the basis for all the songs and then layered on everything else.

BillMike can play anything. He was able to put bass and piano on some songs. Whatever it needed, he was right there with it. It was just a ‘let’s figure it out as we go’ type of thing.

Some of the songs came really quickly.

Once the base tracks were done, it was easy to go from there.”

WHY YOU SHOULD HEAR HIM: A song like “See Them Move” has a classic folk sound and features baritone vocals and some intricate guitar work. It possesses a distinct, quiet intensity.

McKeivier says he’s already started writing songs for a followup album.

“I have some ideas and I’ve been writing more of late,” he says. “We’ve been done with the recording part since May, so I want to be ready to record another one.”

by Dan Savage Dear Dan, I’m a longtime fan and part of the 47 percent of white women who did NOT vote for Donald Trump. To say I’m disappointed, horrified, scared, and mad about the election is woefully insufficient.

I donated $100 to Planned Parenthood this morning because I honestly felt like there was nothing else I could do.

That being said, I wanted to share that I had one of the most weirdly charged, hottest, and sexiest orgasms. A little buzzed (dealing with those election results) and sad, my boyfriend and I turned to each other for consolation. One thing led to another, and before I knew it, we were fucking as Trump came on the TV to give his acceptance speech.

As that orange blowhard spewed more bullshit about being our president, I rode my boyfriend’s big, beautiful dick until I came. It was the perfect way to say, “Fuck this. Now fuck me.” I encourage all your readers to fuck out the stress from this election. Yes, we should donate and volunteer and speak up and protest and vote and not give up hope, but we should also keep doing it and taking care of each other. Because love trumps hate, and fucking trumps … well, I’m not sure what fucking trumps. But it sure makes life better.

They’re too polite over at GoodTherapy.org to include “fucking the shit out of someone” on their list, but what you did on election night — which just so happens to be the exact same thing I did on election night — certainly meets all the criteria.

And if anyone out there who did the same on election night is feeling the least bit guilty, please know that millions of Americans did the exact same thing after 9/11. We used a different term to describe all that post-9/11 fucking: “terror-sex,” which New York magazine defined as “urgent, unguarded, end-of-

the-world coitus inspired by that day’s sudden jolt of uncertainty and fear.”

Sex, partnered or solo, makes life better — and people shouldn’t feel guilty about fucking someone else and/or fucking/jacking/dildo-ing themselves at this uncertain and fearful moment in our nation’s history. Yes, we must donate and volunteer and protest and vote, all while reminding ourselves daily that Hillary Clinton won the popular vote.

And we must commit to defending our friends, neighbors, and coworkers who are immigrants (documented or not), Muslims (American born, immigrants, or refugees), people of color, women seeking reproductive health care, trans men and women seeking safety, lesbian and gay men seeking to protect their families, and everyone and everything else Trump has threatened to harm, up to and including the planet we all live on.

But we must make time for joy and pleasure and laughter and friends.

During the darkest days of the HIV/ AIDS epidemic, when Republicans and religious conservatives controlled the federal government and were doing everything in their power to harm the sick and dying, queers organized and protested and volunteered and mourned.
