UPFRONT WHAT, PRAY TELL, IS COUNCILMAN KERRY MCCORMACK DOING? ON MONDAY, MAY 21, Cleveland Ward 3 councilman Kerry McCormack proposed an ordinance that would make approaching someone in an aggressive or intimidating way on a sidewalk, in a park or at an outdoor ATM a misdemeanor.

McCormack is claiming the ordinance is in response to complaints from visitors downtown regarding verbal abuse and being followed. McCormack’s ward encompasses much of downtown, including Progressive Field, The Q, East Fourth Street and the Jack Casino, areas that are frequented by panhandlers in addition to downtown patrons.

While ordinance 758-18 does not explicitly mention panhandlers, solicitation or homeless individuals, it also does not clearly identify what constitutes “aggressive behavior.”

The ordinance says that no one may: APPROACH, SEEK, OR FOLLOW a person if that conduct is intended, or likely to cause, a reasonable person to (i) fear bodily harm to oneself or another, (ii) fear damage to or loss of property, or (iii) be intimidated; INTENTIONALLY OR recklessly touch or cause physical contact with another person without that person’s consent if the touching or physical conduct is likely to cause a reasonable person to feel restrained or intimidated; INTENTIONALLY OR recklessly block the safe or free passage of a person or vehicle by any means, including unreasonably causing a pedestrian or vehicle operator to take evasive action to avoid physical contact; INTENTIONALLY OR recklessly use obscene, abusive, or threatening language, or gestures, toward a person.

Many of these specifications are completely subjective, and having

such an open-ended ordinance would allow Clevelanders to call the cops on any behavior that makes them afraid, even if the fearful person is absolutely in the wrong.

Touching without consent is a clear violation of boundaries, but by these descriptions, we’d all be able to call the cops on a Celtics fan screaming “Fuck Cavs fans!” at a bar and charge them with a misdemeanor.

The language used in this ordinance is so broad that simply asking someone for directions while they pump gas could be cause for a police investigation.

Given the likelihood that police wouldn’t be able to respond to most complaints, there’s cause for concern that uneven enforcement of the ordinance would occur.

Police disproportionately respond to calls from white people “concerned” with black individuals, meaning it’s safe to assume that this ordinance would disproportionately impact people of color seen as a threat by nervous white people.

If the West Park neighborhood crime watch Facebook group is any indicator, there would be a whole lot of calls from people concerned that black people, just simply existing, are a direct threat to someone’s safety.

Back in 2017, Cleveland reached a settlement with the Ohio American Civil Liberties Union regarding an ordinance criminalizing panhandling that was found to infringe on the First Amendment rights of panhandlers and homeless people looking for assistance.

In the press release regarding the settlement, ACLU Ohio staff attorney Elizabeth Bonham said, “The First Amendment does not allow the state to choose who may speak in a public space — and that includes folks who are asking for help.”

and it’s difficult not to perceive that McCormack’s new proposal is attempting to loophole around the previously removed ordinance.

Individuals have a right to feel safe and should not have to live in fear of the aggressive harassment that does and can occur on public streets, but until the wording on McCormack’s proposal has a more precise definition of “harassment,” this ordinance is a powder keg.

McCormack evidently heard the vocal negative response to the ordinance. Later in the week, the councilman froze the legislation and said he was going to be holding a community conversation to help craft something better.

“The work of creating equitable, safe and welcoming public spaces is difficult,” McCormack tweeted, “but I am fully committed to an inclusive process to make sure we achieve that goal. Moving forward, I will be convening a broad array of stakeholders to take part in a deliberate process to craft policy that will broaden the conversation

to one that focuses on poverty, equity and safety.” — BJ Colangelo

Lead Legislation Likely Forthcoming by Year’s End Last week, the Health and Human Services Committee of Cleveland City Council hosted a hearing to review legislation and hear testimony from local organizations working to help eliminate childhood lead poisoning.

Led by committee chair Blaine Griffin, the hearing was part of an ongoing campaign to inform council members and the general public about solutions to Cleveland’s lead crisis in the hopes of passing legislation before the year’s end.

UPFRONT Organizer Spencer Wells said the group’s plan was simple. “Our plan is to make landlords responsible for making properties lead-safe,â€? he told Scene. “The thrust of the plan is that the landlord is responsible to have a lead-risk assessment. They then follow an assessor’s recommendations to get a lead safe certiďŹ cate, which will be on ďŹ le with the City of Cleveland.â€?

The proposal would “create universal coverage� of all rental housing built before 1978 and could stimulate job growth by creating opportunities to train and employ specialized inspectors.

Wells said the reaction from the committee was one of surprise — it seemed so straightforward!

He said there were some “really insightful comments� from council members who agreed that the issue merited serious attention. He said there wasn’t much pushback, but that councilman Tony Brancatelli, who chairs the Development and Sustainability Committee, said that the city already holds landlords responsible. The key is enforcement. “We tried to explain that enforcement is pretty easy in our proposal,� Wells said. “Either the landlord complies or he doesn’t. It’s not like the city needs to send out inspectors.�

Wells said that the only “area of fuzzinessâ€? in the group’s proposal was a recommendation that the city help low-income landlords with lead remediation (estimated to cost anywhere from $100 to $5,000 per home). In a PowerPoint presentation, the group proposed some options, including a “revolving loan fundâ€? ďŹ nanced by local philanthropic organizations and corporations, but that area remains unclear.

Ordinance 990-17 was crafted last year after CLSN approached councilman Johnson, and Johnson worked with Legal Aid over a series of meetings to draft it. Wells said Johnson was not a “passive bystander who just signed his name.� He said Johnson was active in shaping the legislation and feared that mayoral politics may have hampered its earlier adoption.

(Johnson ran for mayor in 2017.)

After Monday’s meeting, Wells said that GrifďŹ n will meet with the philanthropic community to brainstorm and that the Health and Human Services and Development and Sustainability committees will then meet with the council president

to produce a piece of legislation that represents the broadest consensus. Wells said 990-17 will likely be incorporated into the new ordinance, which ensures that Jeff

While council spends the summer thinking and “arguing behind the scenes,” CLSN plans to do outreach in Cleveland communities, Wells said.

“Our plan is to tell people about our idea and tell them to tell their councilperson about it,” Wells said.

“What we’ve really wanted was to present an alternative to the current method, which is to wait until children get poisoned and then inspect their houses. We just think that’s ass-backwards.”

Wells said he was generally optimistic after the hearing.

“Right now, we’re on the verge of the sausage-making,” he said. “We think our plan makes a lot of sense, but we’ve got to see what comes out the other side.”

In other lead news, the Ohio 8th District Court of Appeals ruled late last week that the city of Cleveland has 30 days to place warning placards outside homes with known lead hazards that have gone unremediated.

Cleveland had been notoriously slow in placarding homes with dangerous levels of lead — the city’s inaction lead to the lawsuit by Legal Aid last year — but it placarded 38

homes in May 2017, 42 homes in April, and intends to placard 189 homes in June.

“We know making Cleveland lead-safe is challenging, and placarding homes is a last resort, but we must protect the health of our most vulnerable residents,” said chief of public affairs Natoya Walker Minor, in a press statement.

Houston, We Have a Conference While millions of dollars have been pumped into repairing Cleveland’s streets after the passage of the 2017 city income tax hike, there’s plenty of work left to do and the subject remains contentious: There have been arguments contending some wards are left behind while others reap allotments for work; persistent reporting by the dogged team at Channel 5 about how the city decides which roads get fixed and why roads that desperately need attention are ignored; and questions from city council about why repairs made as

recently as two or three years ago have already failed.

That falls under the auspices of Michael Cox, the director of public works, and his streets commissioner Rand Scott.

“Believe me, we use all the best practices we can find,” Cox reassured councilmen Basheer Jones and Kevin Conwell in February when they questioned whether the city was doing all it could to fix its streets.

Coincidentally, Cox noted, the pair were actually slated to attend a conference in a matter of weeks — the World of Asphalt expo in Houston, which began March 6.

Attend they did, but Channel 5 had some questions about the trip.

Namely, why did the pair spend more than $5,000 on the trip to Houston for the World of Asphalt expo when the National Pavement Expo and Conference, which they didn’t attend, happened right down the street from Cleveland City Hall at the Cleveland convention center in early February? The station pointed out that about half of the vendors at the Houston conference appeared at the Cleveland expo.

Secondary to that guiding question was the usual dive into exactly how taxpayer-friendly

the travel arrangements were, including the $470 car rental (plus $136 to park the car) and $3,550 for lodging ($443.43 per night for each of the rooms). There was also a registration fee and a food per diem.

These are totally legitimate queries, even if, in the grand scheme of a city with a $1.7 billion budget for 2018, $5,000 is a tiny, tiny drop in the bucket, and represent much-needed accountability reporting on City Hall by Cleveland news organizations.

They also, once again, illuminate the city’s woeful communications department, a deep, impassable and intentionally built pothole itself whose sole purpose under Frank Jackson is to obfuscate and prevent reporters from collecting anything approaching answers. When the department isn’t petulantly ignoring questions and actually deigns to respond, it’s typically to gleefully decline interview requests with top city officials or to pass along statements so wholly lacking in substance they could be confused for a speech by the mayor himself.

FEATURE DESIGN BY COMMITTEE Amid divisions big and small, real and exaggerated, the battle for control of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party

THE COMMITTEE THIS YEAR, SHAKER HEIGHTS nurse Lisa Nguyen was one of many first-time candidates who sought a seat on the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party’s central committee. Members of the central committee, in theory, are neighborhood-based party loyalists who rustle up votes in their precincts during election season. At full capacity, the central committee would include roughly 900 representatives countywide.

But only about 600 of the seats are currently occupied.

Nguyen didn’t become active in politics until recently, and her political motivations grew out of her professional ones: She wanted to become a more effective patient advocate. Through her union, National Nurses United, Nguyen worked on the Bernie Sanders presidential campaign in 2016 and has since lobbied for major reforms in the national healthcare system — Medicare for All, notably.

When Scene contacted Nguyen to ask about what we’d been told prematurely was her victory in the May 8 primary, Nguyen was stunned.

“Wait, for reals?” she responded in a text. “I won? The last time I checked, I thought it was tied.”

Nguyen was correct. In her race for a central committee seat in Shaker Heights Precinct A, the unofficial results had her in a dead heat with her competitor, Mary O. Boyle: 80 to 80.

In Cleveland’s Ward 15 (councilman Matt Zone’s ward, which includes Detroit-Shoreway, Edgewater, and parts of Cudell), activist Christopher Stocking ran for a central committee seat as well. He’s an organizer with Clevelanders for Public Transit and a member of the Cleveland chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America.

He told Scene that he ran for a central committee seat

with the goal of organizing his neighborhood and pushing the county party “further left,” or at least making the party more democratic in its procedures.

Like Nguyen, Stocking wasn’t the only candidate running for his precinct’s committee seat. And like Nguyen, his race was tight. After the unofficial count, he was leading his competitor, Adam Rosen, by only a single vote: 57 to 56.

In Fairview Park, Kim Mann ran for the central committee too. She told Scene she decided to run to “motivate Democrats to vote, and to help [the party] become more engaged.”

She defeated the incumbent committee member, Ms. Troy Greenfield, by an unofficial tally of 60 to 50. Though Greenfield had encouraged Mann to run — and Mann said the race was amicable — Greenfield was the president of the Fairview Park Democratic Club and a vice chair of the party’s executive committee, having been appointed to that post by the county party’s interim chairwoman, Shontel Brown. In that regard, Mann’s victory was an upset.

These hyperlocal races for central committee seats were of course much lower profile than others on May 8: the governor’s race, for example, in which Richard Cordray defeated Dennis Kucinich; or the assorted statehouse contests, in which Sandra Williams, Nickie Antonio and Kenny Yuko all won their races for Ohio Senate seats and Kent Smith, Terrence Upchurch, Juanita Brent, Michael Skindell, and Bride Sweeney won contested races for state representative. Some of them will face Republican or write-in candidates in November.

But the central committee races tell an important, emerging story in county politics. It’s proof, some say, of a strategic insurgency by Newburgh Heights mayor Trevor Elkins and the Cuyahoga County

Progressive Caucus. It’s a “power grab.”

Elkins recently announced that he would be running once again for party chair. Last week, he posted a video featuring him alongside former judge and Cuyahoga County councilwoman C. Ellen Connally, who was announced as his vicechair. Then Friday, Elkins and Connally announced that Connally, not Elkins, would be leading the ticket and Elkins would be running as vice-chair. The move was reportedly made with the blessing of the Progressive Caucus, and Elkins told Scene that he and Connally would be treating their roles as co-chairs.

“This was never about Trevor

Elkins being king,” he said. “And this isn’t about Ellen Connally being queen. This is about making the party stronger.”

Elkins was defeated by Shontel Brown last summer when outgoing chair Stuart Garson voluntarily vacated the seat a year early to make way for new leadership.

Garson had served as chair since 2010, after Jimmy Dimora’s ignominious departure, and had quietly, effectively restored an air of professionalism to the fractious party. His stated reason for stepping down — to provide a longer runway for a new chair and to prevent internal feuds — seemed invalidated by the contentious race between Elkins, Brown and Sandra | clevescene.com | May 30 - June 5, 2018

“Any prospective Chair who attempts to pick between candidates before endorsement or engineer a predetermined result will be moving the party back to a dysfunctional past instead of building on the fragile progress we have achieved up to this point,” he wrote.

But Brown had the backing of powerful politicians — congresswoman Marcia Fudge chief among them, but also county executive Armond Budish and the majority of Cleveland City Council — and she cruised to victory. The upcoming vote on June 9 will be for a full four-year term. Elkins, under the Ellen Connally banner, is now counting on new progressive members of the central committee to push their ticket over the edge.

It’s a bold strategy, one in keeping with the bottom-up leadership philosophy of the Progressive Caucus. But it’s also a long shot, some insiders say.

In any case, Connally and Elkins will have to wrest control from Brown and the powerful factions backing her: Marcia Fudge in one corner; and in the other, the back-slapping old guard known colloquially as the “Parma Boys” —former county prosecutor Bill Mason, Bedford clerk of courts Tom Day, former Parma mayor Dean DePiero, and Cleveland City Council president and party vice chair Kevin Kelley.

The Cuyahoga County Progressive Caucus’ political director, Steve Holecko (who also ran for a statehouse seat, losing to Bride Sweeney in District 14), told Scene that Trevor Elkins was active in recruiting candidates to run for the central committee. He said that the progressive coalition was now about 250 strong.

“We have to get as many of our people to show up [on June 9] as possible,” Holecko said.

But Nguyen, Stocking and Mann, who are all Progressive Caucus members, said that if indeed they are elected after official results are tabulated, they wouldn’t automatically vote for Elkins for chair. Presumably, they’d feel similarly about Connally.

“I like a lot of what Shontel Brown has to say,” Nguyen told Scene. “I remember attending a meeting, and she was talking about reaching out

to independent voters. She said a lot of their values are Democratic, and we should be getting them to vote Democrat. That said a lot to me.”

“You have to earn my vote,” Stocking said. “I’ll have a series of questions for the candidates, and I’ll vote based on their responses.”

Mann said that she was in the dark about the whole process. She’d received no word from anybody about what comes next, but she knew there would be a vote on June 9.

She said she likes Elkins’ platform (which Connally has committed to), particularly his recommendation that the party stop endorsing candidates in primary races with open seats. But she said she thought it was a mistake to exaggerate the Progressive Caucus insurgency.

“I think certain factions, they see us coming and call it a ‘power grab,’” she said. “In a sense, it is, but only if you’re holding onto power so tightly that there’s no room for more voices.

Until the two-party system is fixed, the Democrats need to move over a little bit. ‘Progressive’ shouldn’t be the dirty word that it has become.”

Nguyen also felt stories about a “rift” in the party, which are often conveyed as a carbon copy of the Hillary vs. Bernie / Establishment vs. Progressive rift in 2016, are too readily imposed upon local politics.

“Honestly, I think it’s a bit overblown,” Nguyen said. “I don’t think there’s much of a rift. But times are changing, and there are a lot of people in the party who haven’t been used to change. If you really want the party to stay strong, you have to take note of that change and ride with it.”

THE INSURGENCY TREVOR ELKINS, THE insurgent himself, has the flavor of a blue-collar populist. His political ambitions, which encompass anything up to and including the President of the United States of America, are outsized, if you ask his opponents. After all, he’s the mayor of Newburgh Heights, a village with a population, at approximately 2,100, that is less than one-tenth the size of an average Cleveland ward, and only slightly larger than the student body of Euclid High School, where the Democratic Party holds its meetings.

Elkins’ electoral success is a mixed bag, too. While he ascended the ranks of Newburgh Heights quickly, and has served as mayor there since 2011, he also lost his primary bid for state representative in 2004. And this year, he was creamed in his bid for the state

of Ohio’s Democratic Central Committee. Each state senate district is represented by one man and one woman. Elkins earned only seven percent of the vote in that race, which former Cleveland City councilman Jeff Johnson won handily, with 53 percent of the vote.

Current councilman Blaine GrifďŹ n came in second, with 22 percent.

In a conversation with Scene a few days after the primaries, Elkins said that he thought the media portrayal of a centrist vs. progressive ďŹ ght within the party ought to be recalibrated. “That’s just not an accurate assessment of what’s going on,â€? he said. “The ďŹ ght that’s occurring today is a generational ďŹ ght. It’s a ďŹ ght between a new generation of leaders that are ready to take a different approach to authority and power and the very transactional leadership that exists.â€?

Elkins’ campaign for party chair consisted of a series of procedural recommendations. He called them “a set of essential rule changes designed to eliminate backroom horse trading� in a press statement announcing his candidacy. Elkins said Connally was committed to the same measures.

more fundamentally as a rebuke to the powerful factions that, according to Elkins, believe they are entitled to control in perpetuity. He believes that the old-guard style of machine politics is not only outdated, but ineffective. And he thinks Shontel Brown is a puppet for the machine. “The big takeaway from the primaries is that the county Democratic Party has to do better,� he said. “It only delivered in three of the eight competitive races it endorsed in, which is an abysmal record. We have to be better if we’re going to have any credibility with voters. I think the primaries tell us that this current interim leadership [Shontel Brown] just doesn’t deliver for candidates. And that doesn’t bode well for November.�

The Democrats endorsed in 34 primary races, including seats at the Ohio Statehouse, on the county bench and on county council. Ten of those races were contested, meaning more than one candidate ran for the seat.

In Elkins’ analysis, incumbent Ward 3 county councilman Dan Brady and statehouse candidate Kent Smith were such prohibitive favorites that their races couldn’t be considered “competitive.� He also thinks that the party’s successful

backing of Sandra Williams in State Senate District 21 deserves an asterisk, because congresswoman Marcia Fudge supported challenger Jeff Johnson in that race, a maneuver thought to be retaliatory after Williams challenged Shontel Brown for party chair last year. “How can the county party take credit for a win that they tried to prevent?� Elkins asked. “They tried to knock Sandra out of the box.�

The only other two races in which the party backed winning candidates were for state rep seats on Cleveland’s east side: Terrence Upchurch defeated a crowded ďŹ eld, including former city councilman TJ Dow, in the 10th District; and Juanita Brent bested her challengers in District 12, which includes a handful of southeastern suburbs stretching from Bedford to MayďŹ eld Heights. (Yvonka Hall, the Progressive Caucus candidate in District 12, told Scene that she never received an application for the county party’s endorsement, and that Juanita Brent’s credentials remain as unclear as they were in the Plain Dealer endorsement interview.)

But in other races, the party endorsement failed to be the golden ticket that it has long been considered. On the west side, party-

endorsed candidate Marty Sweeney fell to Nickie Antonio in Senate District 23. Party-endorsed candidate Tom Bullock fell to Michael Skindell in House District 13. Both Antonio and Skindell were backed by the Progressive Caucus, and their victories testiďŹ ed to the group’s organizing power, especially on the west side. The Progressive Caucus is headquartered in Lakewood.

All of the statehouse races mentioned above were for open seats, meaning there was no incumbent.

And one of Elkins’ four “essential rule changesâ€? is a proposal that the party stop endorsing candidates in those races. “Why is the county party picking sides amongst Democrats?â€? He said. “Let them all run, and whoever wins, that’s our candidate. Then we all get around that person. The reason that the structure exists the way it does is because it allows a few power brokers the opportunity to preserve their ďŹ efdoms. A divided party is what some of these folks actually want. That’s the environment they thrive in.â€?

FEATURE Ohio Young Black Democrats, labor groups — to participate in races without being in conflict with the party at large. Elected officials who are also ward or city leaders would be able to publicly support the candidate of their choice as well (Nickie Antonio, for example).

They are technically prohibited from doing so by the party’s “unity rule,” which forbids members from publicly supporting non-endorsed candidates.

For races without open seats, incumbents in good standing are generally expected to win the party endorsement. And when state senator Kenny Yuko failed to earn the party’s backing, in February, for his seat in District 25, it was portrayed as yet another example of the widening rift. Yuko had backed Elkins for party chair last year, and Shontel Brown’s abstention from the Yuko endorsement vote was seen as payback. Committee members from Warrensville Heights (home of Marcia Fudge and Shontel Brown) voted unanimously for Yuko’s challenger, John Barnes.

At the time, Yuko called his nonendorsement “politics at its ugliest.”

He defeated John Barnes by 10 points.

One important issue for bushytailed new central committee members to understand is that the central committee does not make endorsements on behalf of the party.

Scene heard anecdotally that several candidates for the central committee were inspired to run specifically because of the party’s endorsement of Marty Sweeney over Nickie Antonio. Feelings that the party’s endorsement was a grave mistake — a betrayal, even, given that the endorsement vote was held on the same day as the Women’s March, and Sweeney settled a sexual misconduct suit in 2005 — were amplified when reporting by Scene revealed that Sweeney had paid multiple people, for “consulting,” who then shifted their allegiance from Antonio to Sweeney, leading to pivotal endorsements.

But the endorsement duty falls to the party’s executive committee, which is composed of up to 400 elected representatives from the ranks of the central committee and up to 350 additional members appointed by the county chair. (The appointed members are essentially “super delegates,” according to Steve Holecko, and they allow the party

chair and appointed cronies to tip the scales.)

That’s why another one of Elkins’ four “essential rule changes” is making the entire executive committee elected. The goal is to endorse candidates representative of the party membership, not its leadership.

“My position, overall, is that we have to change from being this top-down hierarchy that is designed around preservation [of power],” Elkins said, “and move to really being about creating a political organization, a political apparatus, that will be able to go out and deliver for voters to win elections.”

THE CALL, AND POST THE BIGGER AND MORE calamitous endorsement story, arguably, concerns the judicial races, and the “chaotic pushback” that congresswoman Marcia Fudge generated when she inserted herself into the party endorsement process in an attempt to win support for her preferred candidates.

Local journalist Richard Andrews, writing for his solo outlet the Real Deal Press, penned a series of scorching articles about Fudge’s meddling in January.

“It would be hard to imagine a more ill-conceived and ineptly concealed private maneuver,” Andrews wrote on Jan. 20, “than what [Fudge] unveiled last night during a telephone conference that was leaked before it was over.”

During the conference call, which Scene independently confirmed, Marcia Fudge sought to convince the conferees — almost all of whom were current black elected leaders on Cleveland’s east side and in the eastern suburbs — that if the party executive committee failed to endorse Fudge’s favored judicial candidates, Andrea Nelson Moore and Deborah Turner, Fudge’s allies should advance a “scorched-earth” policy, i.e., no endorsements at all.

Shontel Brown was reportedly an active participant in the discussion and continually asked Fudge how best she could accomplish the congresswoman’s desired outcomes procedurally.

“Shontel’s job is to do what Marcia needs done,” one conferee told Andrews.

Long before the call, a deal had been cut — rumored to have been brokered by Parma Boy Tom Day — between the Fudge coalition and Bill Mason’s bloc. According to the agreement, Mason’s Parma faction and the committee members they

controlled would not interfere with the endorsement of Andrea Nelson Moore and Deborah Turner if Fudge and her allies would not interfere with two of the Parma Boys’ preferred judicial candidates: Andrew Santoli and Emily Hagan.

Of the above four candidates, the two that were endorsed by the party — Andrew Santoli for Mason and Andrea Nelson Moore for Fudge — lost their races, to William McGinty and Ashley Kilbane, respectively.

The two that failed to receive a party endorsement — Emily Hagan for Mason and Deborah Turner for Fudge — prevailed.

Before the filing deadline, the relevant power brokers had approached competitors, including Ashley Kilbane (in the Andrea Nelson Moore race) and Karrie Howard (in the Deborah Turner race), asking them to switch races or wait their turn, to “fall in line like good soldiers,” one source with knowledge of the deal told Scene.

“They decided to throw Ashley Kilbane overboard, believing that she couldn’t win without them.

They thought she’d follow orders like so many candidates had done before her.”

Kilbane declined an interview, saying she learned a lot as a

candidate but was “not an analyst” and had no special insight about the state of the party or how others ran their campaigns.

When Scene spoke with Karrie Howard, he confirmed that he’d been approached about waiting his turn.

“My view is that there is a new wave of people who have been told to sit down and wait their turn who are just tired of that,” Howard said. “I’m 41 years old. If I wait six years for a seat, I’m 47. Why should we have to wait? I’m not just talking about on the bench. I mean city council, municipal seats. They all benefit from innovative ideas. If we wait, the ideas may still be innovative, but they’ll be coming from old people. There has to be some kind of pipeline.”

Howard, who began his judicial campaign a year-and-a-half out, and who canvassed the entire county, managed to obtain the endorsement of the Plain Dealer, the Stonewall Dems and even Cleveland mayor Frank Jackson, who broke with Marcia Fudge to back Howard.

Howard would have been the only black man in the Court of Common Pleas general division, and journalist Richard Andrews, for one, blamed Howard’s failure to win the endorsement of the party on Marcia

“He was a Fudge casualty,” Andrews wrote, “deprived of a significant advantage he had labored to win for more than a year.”

And later, in one of Andrews’ most incisive observations: “[Howard] needed 60 percent approval [for the party endorsement] but was held to 59.3 percent by Fudge allies. Consider the irony: a black man wins support from white people on the content of his character and his accomplishments; meanwhile, some black people fail to support him based on an agenda that has those same black people calling out white people for bias.”

Howard was incredulous when Scene spoke with him about his failed endorsement, too.

“I got zero votes from Warrensville Heights, and zero from Cleveland Ward 10,” Howard said.

“This was after I’d been assured by ward leaders in Warrensville that I had their support. I came in with votes from Parma, Lakewood and North Royalton, but I get nothing in Warrensville and Ward 10?”

On the Marcia Fudge conference call, Euclid ward leader Kent Smith (who won his race for state rep in District 8) reportedly acknowledged that Howard had substantial support in Euclid and would work to sway committee members to Turner.

Howard said he only received two votes from Euclid.

Turner was not endorsed, but she nevertheless defeated the largest judicial field in the primary elections, including Karrie Howard, John J. Gallagher, and William Vodrey.

“It’s the #MeToo effect,” said a party insider, speaking on background. “Look at that race. It was five males and one female. That’s why Turner won.”

SHONTEL-ALL EVEN IN THE FACE OF WHAT some called a poor primary showing, and after the endorsement circus, Shontel Brown is still winning enthusiastic support from the party’s leaders and constituent groups before the vote on June 9.

In a press release issued before Brown even publicly announced her candidacy, the Cuyahoga County Young Democrats unanimously endorsed her for chair.

“Shontel earned the support of the Young Dems,” said that group’s president Ryan Puente, “because she is delivering results and proving to be a strong voice for our local party.”

events and programming director (who also lost to Bride Sweeney in the District 14 state rep race), said that Brown shouldn’t be dinged for the performance of endorsed candidates in the primaries. He said he thinks the value of a party endorsement is diminishing anyway, and felt that Trevor Elkins was using the endorsement debate as a wedge issue. He questioned Elkins’ commitment to doing away with endorsements in open-seat primaries.

For her part, Brown told Scene that she intends to continue to move the party forward. And she was not interested in dissing Elkins.

“I have consistently run on my past performance, professionalism and perspective on policies, and I don’t intend to change,” she wrote in response to a series of questions.

“I have been and will continue to be open to recommendations of my fellow democrats, because I fully understand this is a democracy, not a dictatorship. My philosophy has always been rooted in consensus building and collaboration because I know we yield better outcomes when we work together.”

In response to a question about the performance of party-endorsed candidates in the primary, Brown said that the party’s outreach — via mailers, primarily — had a strong impact on them. She said that nearly 20,000 more Democrats voted this year than in the 2014 primary, an increase of 13 percent.

As for the “unholy alliance” between Marcia Fudge and Bill Mason’s crew, and the subsequent endorsement embarrassments, Brown referred to them as rumors.

“I will continue to work hard to dispel rumors relative to my leadership ability and capacity,” she wrote, “especially those that are counterproductive to unifying the party.”

On that note, she said that it’s exciting to see so much energy at the precinct level and a good sign for the party’s overall health. Like Connally and Elkins, Brown felt that building unity will build electoral strength.

“The state of the party is energized,” she wrote. “Whether it’s the ‘progressive’ or ‘establishment’ wing, I think you need both in order to fly and that is the thing I appreciate most about the Democratic Party. It is diverse, so rather than focus on things that divide, I will continue to focus on the things that we can agree on, because that is what we will need in order to win in November.”

ART FRAGILE THINGS Things aren’t what they seem in Matthew Gallagher’s Research & Development exhibit at Hedge

By Dott von Schneider WE ARE STANDING IN FRONT of “Magnetic Field Fossil,” a small, organic sculpture created with white iron and acrylic. “It looks like a sea urchin of some kind, or a bulb,” says an admirer at the opening reception of Matthew Gallagher’s solo exhibition, Research & Development , currently on view at Hedge. Gallagher’s work had people trying to figure out the enigma of process while discovering new forms with their minds’ eye. “They are all latching onto something, like they are formed out of nothing,” continues another viewer.

Chewy cityscapes, dynamic drawings, moments in time and crunchy aliens comprise some of the craziest artworks we have seen come out of this city in a while.

Combining science experiments with art is certainly not a new thing, but Gallagher somehow elevates and equalizes the tension between these two forms of creative endeavor.

Again we are enthralled by the small sculptural works, which are created using magnets.

“I’m pretty transparent about the technique,” Gallagher says as we walk through the exhibition a few days after the opening. “There’s still mystery about it. The pieces look like explosions, but they are really imploding. Whether you are exploding or imploding, it looks the same. The iron is building on itself, but in a way where they are trying to get to the most magnetic power. The iron wants to get to the strongest point in the magnetic field so it is climbing over itself to get to it.” When asked if he has filmed the process, Gallagher admits that it’s difficult to do so since the work is labor intensive.

“If there’s a misstep and something falls on the side of the plexiglas box, then I consider the piece ruined.”

The cityscapes and many of the encaustic works look like shafts of shelf fungus, that half-moon shaped ’shroom that one mostly sees on fallen tree trunks. All of

the encaustic works are encased under protective cover. We assumed correctly that the plexiglass is used to keep people from touching, but also to protect artworks from dust, as they are quite delicate.

They resemble artifacts in this way — cities under glass, organisms.

Gallagher points out that, “I grew up in Boston and the Harvard Natural History Museum displayed specimens under glass. The labels were handwritten and yellowing.

They had fuzzy rocks and minerals there and you are dying to touch them, but they are so incredibly fragile that a brush of a hand would result in collapse.”

There’s a very cool, inner tension that Gallagher’s work draws from us, as if we ourselves are being manipulated by a magnetic pull.

We want to reach in and scrape the materials under our fingernails, even knowing that would completely destroy the piece. The feeling is akin to being a child in the candy shop who wants to touch everything, but knows she would be in a load of trouble from Mom. Among the more sculptural works, there are paintings under polycarbonate. “These are the newest and the riskiest paintings in the show,” the artist admits.

However, the two paintings, “One Pole” and “Two Pole,” are simple and serene with yellow and sage pigments with iron waving

beneath the smooth, shiny surface like shifting fields of grain or undulating seaweed.

As we move into the smaller of the two gallery rooms, we encounter Gallagher’s experimental drawings. They are deceptive in how they resemble watercolor paintings or even prints. Here he uses assorted markers with acetone, which have a different

public was asking at the opening reception.

On the opposite wall, the 30-by30-inch ballpoint pen drawings are flowing grids that disorient and hypnotize at once. When we think about artwork being alive, we usually consider salt or oxidization or melting; we don’t necessarily think about a solvent continually blowing out a drawing due to

humidity. These grid drawings employ a slow-moving dynamic.

The rigid grid is there, but no longer evident. The lines bleed out, heaving and surging to simulate a convincingly vibrating effect.

The two large paintings in the smaller room are the last pieces we discuss. Both are created using a magnet to manipulate and pull the iron through the surface. One is yellow with hints of red ochre and black, and the other looks like it has been smudged. “This (second) one is titled ‘Real Life Blur Tool,’” Gallagher says, “because it reminds me of the Photoshop tool. STAGE M IS FOR MOM, AND MISERY Convergence-Continuum does justice to the injustice in Suzan-Lori Parks play In the Blood

By Christine Howey “SUFFERING IS AN ENORMOUS turn-on!” That line, which is said by a character in the middle of In the Blood by Suzan-Lori Parks, may explain everything. For those of us who find ourselves in the living nightmare of the Trump administration, as the government tries to make life more miserable for everyone but the 1 percent, that may be the answer: Suffering is an aphrodisiac for certain government leaders.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Now at ConvergenceContinuum Theater, this play premiered about 20 years ago and is Parks’ reimagining of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Hester Prynne as Hester La Negrita, an impoverished African-American mother of five kids from five different men. None of those dudes are there to help, but a couple of them do show up as the play progresses.

She and her brood live under a bridge (effectively rendered by scenic designer Scott Zolkowski in Con-Con’s small space), where they simulate a normal family’s daily dynamics — the children learn and the parent provides sustenance.

Except in this case, the kids are barely able to learn anything since their mother is illiterate. In one of the many references to Hawthorne’s classic, the only letter she can come close to writing is a scrawled “A.” As for food, Hester cooks up a bowl of fantasy soup and tells her children that it has everything in it including meat and pumpkin pie. It is clearly established that Hester is a deeply flawed but essentially goodhearted woman and a loving mother, but there are forces out to destroy her. Someone has written “slut” on the wall of their little den and her oldest child Jabber is the only member of the family who can read it and understand what it means.

Even though he erases the word, Hester’s past can’t be erased. She calls her kids her “five joys,” and freely admits that they are bastards.

But one can see that 13-year-old Jabber, eldest daughter Bully, youngest daughter Beauty, 10-yearold Trouble and toddler Baby are a burden as well as a pleasure. And when her prostitute friend Amiga

Gringa encourages her to approach some of the baby daddies for financial help, it sends Hester off on a desperate and doomed journey.

Among the many bold strokes of imagination at work in Parks’ play is the technique of having the adult actors who play the five children also play five different grown-ups in Hester’s world. In addition to Amiga Gringa (played effectively by Grace Mitri, who is also Beauty), two of the adult characters are part of the community of professionals who are there, ostensibly, to assist people in Hester’s tenuous position.

Playwright Parks is playing with these archetypes to make a non-too-subtle point about how this country treats women of color who have children and no fathers. These women, as condemned now as H. Prynne was by the Puritans, were suffering 20 years ago when this play was written. And things are

Trouble) gives Hester a cursory medical exam, doing the world’s worst pelvic inspection while she stands with her feet spread legs as he slides under her on a skateboard and peers up with a flashlight. And then later, he explains how he had sex with her because he was helpless to resist her charms.

Speaking of fathers, Hester encounters two of them. When she visits the street preacher Reverend D, she throws his good advice back in his face as she shows him a photo of his child, Baby. The remarkable performer Anthony X brings each of those characters to life, morphing from the impulsive and gurgling

Baby to the smooth and shallow Rev. But Hester’s biggest dream is to reconnect with her first love, and Jabber’s father, Chilli. And he does show up, sweeping her off her feet with a new white dress, an engagement ring, and a glorious dance that captures the blushing innocence of their first young love.

But if you think that’s the end of their story, you’re entitled to one more think.

All of this is held together by an outstanding performance by Jeannine Gaskin as Hester. While she exudes maternal warmth and an appealing innocence, her rage is not far from the surface. And surface it does. Director Cory Molner brings interesting interpretations out of his actors, even when there are moments when a flat line readings or missed beats impair the flow.

In the Blood is a play that is as powerful and instructive now as it was when it opened. And that’s a sad commentary on where we are now —living under that metaphorical bridge and hoping it doesn’t collapse on us.

EAT UNCONVENTIONALLY CONVENTIONAL Ushabu’s new 13-course tasting menu is a Michelin-star-worthy adventure through Cleveland and Japan

By Douglas Trattner TASTING MENU PROTOCOL practically dictates that diners will advance along a predictable course that steadily builds in flavor, intensity and drama until the apogee, at which point the guest is gently returned to base camp. But under the direction of Ushabu’s chef Matthew Spinner, we careen from an umami bomb of grilled fish with uni to a study on a single asparagus spear and back up the mount again to smoky yakitori.

It isn’t as haphazard as it sounds; in fact Spinner is working within the very rigid framework of kaiseki, a Japanese multi-course experience that was recently unveiled at Ushabu. Our 13-course ride was a Michelin-star-worthy adventure that proved to be a hyper-seasonal expression of culinary craft and ingenuity.

“With this menu we’re trying to treat Cleveland as if it were a prefecture of Japan,” Spinner explains as we begin. “We are doing Cleveland things with Japanese techniques or Japanese things with a Cleveland spin.”

Following an amuse-bouche of pickled green strawberries, we’re presented with an arrangement that demonstrates the amount of deliberation that goes into each dish.

On the preprinted, personalized menu, that course is labeled “Season Tickets.”

“I thought about what spring means to me, and one thing I always look forward to after a long winter is baseball,” Spinner recounts. “This is my homage to the Yomiuri Giants, who is the sister team to my San Francisco Giants.”

Atop a baseball scorecard “placemat” from an actual game, the chef sets a plate that marries two popular Japanese snacks, crispy fried cabbage and battered octopus.

This version features uber-crispy tempura-fried napa cabbage that’s topped with sesame-pickled tentacles.

To drink, there’s cold Japanese lager in a plastic cup.

between two slices of soft Hokkaido milk bread is a wedge of pankofried A5 Japanese wagyu, quite literally the highest rated beef in the world. The phrase “melt in your mouth” is often hyperbole, but in the case of this exquisite beef, it’s a matter of fact. The wee sandwich is lubricated with truffle mayo and wild onion marmalade and crowned

poached Burgundy snails provide an earthy, “muddy” baseline.

In keeping with kaiseki code, the fifth course is always a “lidded dish,” in this instance a dashi steamed artichoke, which is followed by a grilled fish course.

with a dollop of fine French caviar for a blast of brine.

“I grew up on a farm about 25 miles west of here and on the farm we call spring ‘mud season,’” Spinner says while presenting the next course. “This dish is kind of my homage to mud season.”

His epicurean interpretation of “dirty sheep standing in a muddy pasture” showcases a supple American lamb chop nestled into a springtime bed of pea shoots, chives and wild flowers. A smattering of black miso butter-

Spinner’s next dish, an asparagus salad, is subdued by comparison, designed to refocus, realign and revive our senses.

“The way I feel about kaiseki is that it is different movements in the same symphony, an ebb and flow that reels you out and reels you in,” he says. “I feel that your palate has less to do with it than your attention span. Some dishes are

designed to wake you up.’

It’s difficult to not contemplate a dish like this one, a fat spear of asparagus that’s sliced down the middle, trisected into thirds, and showered with attention. Each section is prepared differently — peeled and blanched, hickory smoked and grilled, raw — to achieve various textures and flavors.

Turkey is often relegated to Thanksgiving and ho-hum subs, but here heritage breed meat is threaded onto skewers along with smoked parsnip and grilled yakitori style — a nod to turkey season on the farm.

Spinner’s last savory course is an interpretation of tomewan, a simultaneous serving of rice, soup and pickled vegetables that ensures that no guest leaves hungry. This version does that and more thanks to caramelized miso soup, foie gras with pickled wild asparagus, and a poached egg-topped bowl of rice.

There’s been a quiet revolt against tasting menus taking place in America and I roundly fall into the camp of insurgents. Few diners want to plant their butts in a seat for four hours while the chef attempts to show off. At Ushabu we breezed through 13 courses in under two hours, thanks to crisp pacing that anticipated our every move. And at $150 per person, it is a remarkable value. The five-course version, which does not require advance notice, offers a more affordable taste.

It’s no coincidence that the kaiseki options debuted to coincide with the arrival of spring, when shabu-shabu loses some appeal (though it shouldn’t), but given the chef’s passion for all things Japanese, don’t expect the bloom to fade anytime soon.

“I really love the idea of introducing Japanese cuisine to the city that isn’t just sushi, tempura and teppanyaki,” says Spinner. “To drive home that Japanese cuisine and culture is larger than what many expect it to be.”

friends. And slowly it turned into a nagging question of, okay, how do I turn this into a profession, because I obviously have a passion for it.”

Smith says that she quit her job, moved to Milwaukee and apprenticed for nearly a year at a wine shop and bar. There, she expanded and sharpened her palate, observed what was and wasn’t working in terms of customer satisfaction, enrolled in business classes and drafted a business plan.

It was around that time that she was shown the former Latitude 41n space.

“I immediately walked in and fell in love with it. It’s cool and quirky and immediately I started to see Flight come to life there,” she says.

The property will feature two distinct spaces, one devoted to a large bar and soft seating like sofas, armchairs and banquettes. The opposite side will be dedicated to the tasting room and retail bottle shop.

Wines will be poured from a nitrobased, temperature controlled wine dispensing system that holds 29 varieties. If you try something you like, pick up a bottle to go from the retail area stocked with some 400 labels.

As the name suggests, wine flights will be offered that showcase various wine styles, regions and varietals, all in an attempt to get people to experience new things.

“The whole goal is to strip away some of the pretense and bring in a little more fun, a little more adventure, and a little liveliness to wine because, let’s be honest, it’s just fermented grape juice — it doesn’t have to be so serious,” Smith says.

In addition to the flights there will be tasting pours, glass pours and bottles can be purchased at retail and enjoyed on site for a reasonable corkage fee. Smith says that she’s aiming to highlight value-conscious wines in the $10 to $30 range, but will offer some higher-ticket labels as well.

Three draft taps will be dedicated to craft beer, plus a few shelves will be stocked with bottles of beer as well.

In terms of food, Smith says that she’ll leave the heavy lifting to her neighbors. At Flight, she’ll stick to approachable snacks like charcuterie, cheese, olives and nuts.

When she opens Flight this fall, it will be all according to plan, she asserts.

“This neighborhood is where I wanted to be from the get-go,” she says. “I wrote my business plan and crafted this whole thing with the intention of being in Detroit Shoreway. I’m excited about it. I

think it’s going to be fun and I hope it will complement everything else that’s happening here. That’s really the goal.”

This past weekend, Western Reserve Distillers (14221 Madison Ave., 330-780-9599) welcomed its first public guests after years of planning, design and construction.

The Lakewood-based distiller will begin offering tours of its facility on Friday evenings and throughout the day on Saturdays and Sundays.

Ann Thomas, who runs the business with her husband Kevin, says that groups will be kept to between 16 and 20 people in order to lend an intimate feel to the proceedings.

“We want to share this with everyone, and we want everyone to have that personal experience when they come in,” she says.

The tours will last between 90 minutes and 120 minutes and cost $10 per person. Reservations are very strongly encouraged given the number of requests already received by management.

Guests will be told all about the process, from the farmers and allorganic grain to the distillation and bottling.

“Every time we do a tour, there will be something happening on the distillery floor,” Ann adds.

The tour will end with samples of Western Reserve’s only current product, a corn-based vodka, and the opportunity to purchase bottles for $19. Down the road, the vodka will be joined by gin, rum, bourbon, rye and other specialty spirits.

Next up is the restaurant component of the complex, Distill Table, a farm-to-table eatery with Eddie Tancredi as chef; that should come online by late June or early July. The windows and doors are in, the drywall is up, the bartops have been poured, and the kitchen equipment has been ordered, reports Thomas, all good news for a project years in the making.

“My husband and I started this journey almost four years ago, so the fact that we are finally open and we have something to sell and to bring the public in to enjoy what we’ve been passionate about for the past four years is just aaaaaaaaahhhh,” she says with a huge sigh of relief.

MUSIC FIDDLING AND SKIDDLING Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly team up for their first co-headlining U.S. tour

By Jeff Niesel IRISH PUNK ROCK BANDS Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly have co-existed for the past 20 years and have even toured Europe together. But they’ve never toured the States together.

Until now. For the first time, the groups will embark on a coheadlining tour of the U.S. The tour’s first date is Friday at Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica.

In separate interviews, Flogging Molly singer-guitarist Dennis Casey and Dropkick Murphys drummer Matt Kelly speak about how the tour came together and reflect on their band’s legacies.

HOW DID THE TOUR COME ABOUT? CASEY: We’ve been talking to [the

guys in Dropkick Murphys] for years about touring the States together. You have scheduling things that get in the way. We played a show in Milan, Italy, and there were like 8,000 people there going crazy. We talked about the show and decided we needed to do [a co-headlining tour]. We booked a European tour that was overthe-top great. We played Germany and Austria. We wanted to bring it to America. We’re going to do the Eastern side of the country and then the Western side later on.

KELLY: Well, the European tour we

did with Flogging Molly earlier this year went so well, and the demand from fans here was so high, we figured it made sense to bring it to these shores. Plus, the bands get along well and have known each other for going on two decades.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR TOUR MATES? CASEY: Personally, they’re great

guys. Musically, they’re different.

Our singer Dave [King] is from Ireland. He has a different perspective lyrically and sonically.

The Dropkick Murphys are from Boston and have that aesthetic going for them. What ties it all together is that there are IrishAmerican roots in both bands. We share that passion for Celtic culture

should pat ourselves on the backs.

In rock ’n’ roll, 10 years is a long time. The Beatles and Led Zeppelin only lasted about 10 years. Now, 20 years into it, we’re a family.

We’ve all met our families. We’ve had kids. The roots have grown really far down, and we’re a solid unit. I always wanted it to continue.

It would’ve been hard for me to fathom it would have been going for 20 years. It’s not that I didn’t think the band was good enough, but it’s a tough business, and I consider ourselves fortunate. We also have a wonderful fan base.

It’s part of what keeps us going. If you had told me 20 years ago that I would have been playing in these venues that we play in, I would have laughed at that.

KELLY: I wasn’t sure what the hell

MUSIC I didn’t want to bag groceries and work in warehouses for the rest of my life. I knew I liked this band a lot and basically prayed for the best. It has changed my life in multifarious positive ways that I won’t even begin to bore you with.

LAST YEAR, YOU RELEASED A NEW STUDIO ALBUM. TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU TRIED TO DO DIFFERENTLY WITH THAT ALBUM. CASEY: We hired a different

producer. We had a new drummer.

We went back to where we recorded our Float album. We didn’t want to do something really different. It was six years since we put the last record out, and life happens. My father died, and Dave’s mother died.

These things stepped in the way but also inspired the record. There were songs about Dave’s mother and my father. Life carries you forward, and you just reflect on it. I like to say that a record is like that moment in time. It’s about who we are at that time.

KELLY: First off, we recorded it in

Tornillo, Texas, on the border of Mexico. We spent three weeks there banging out track after track. We had never recorded outside of the Boston area before, and this was a big change for us. But the isolation gave us the ability to focus on recording the songs and fleshing out the few that needed that extra attention. Additionally, we wanted to give the songs a big, anthemic quality, so it wasn’t all breakneck speed and a quick shout here and there. Sonic Ranch studio was just inspiring, and the staff were so cool that it made it a pleasure. We weren’t pining to go home at every second.

TALK ABOUT THE YEAR YOU’VE HAD SO FAR. YOU’VE BEEN TOURING STEADILY, HAVEN’T YOU? CASEY: I love playing on New Year’s

Eve, and we played two nights in Chicago. It’s a fun thing to do, being in a band like ours. We sold out the Palladium in Los Angeles.

I saw Nirvana there and Bjork and Tool — all these great bands.

That was a great show. We did our annual Filthy Dog Cruise. We do it every year, and that’s what you would call too much fun. It takes a week to recover. It’s non-stop day and night. Every band that does it wants to do it again. It’s a great

festival on a boat, and you don’t have to go back to your car and drive somewhere at the end of the night. I grew up on Lake Ontario in Rochester, and you can relate to what it’s like to go to Florida in the winter. I don’t need to explain to you that it’s a wonderful break.

KELLY: Our last gig was March 18 at

the end of our annual St. Patrick’s run. Great, great tour this time around, with our old friends and my personal heroes Agnostic Front. It had been 20 years since we’d toured with them, as well as 21 years since we’d toured with the other band on the bill, our friends Bim Skala Bim. It was an absolute blast. The gigs were almost all sold out, and the reaction to the bands went anywhere from appreciative to jubilant. We count ourselves very lucky to be doing what we’re doing.

YOU’VE BOTH PLAYED CLEVELAND NUMEROUS TIMES. WHAT’S YOUR BEST MEMORY OF THE CITY? CASEY: Mighty Mighty Bosstones

took us out on one of our first tours. Sum 41 opened. We played the Agora, and we got up to some hijinks. I think someone had brought a bottle of whiskey. We got pretty tipsy, and I don’t know why, but there were these tricycles backstage. We rode them out onto the stage during the Mighty Mighty Bosstones set. They got a kick out of it.

KELLY: The Euclid Tavern in 1997.

During our set, there was a huge rumble with different factions of skinheads, punkers, etc. We attracted a rough crowd back then, some of which from time to time we’ll see at our gigs. I saw cue balls being chucked around, tables and chairs being used as weapons and shields, etc., and it was kind of a happy-go-lucky sort of rumble, violent but not malicious, if you can imagine. I remember it being a really fun set, and we just played on, bemused at the insanity unfolding before our eyes. Classic stuff from a sadly bygone era. No cellphones, no social media — just good old-fashioned having fun at the gig. Other than that, a former member of our band, Ryan Foltz, is from Cleveland … . So it made it extra fun when we played your fair city.

MUSIC THE FIRST OF MANY MUSICAL FESTIVALS 10 bands to see at this year’s Spring Fling V IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR when every weekend brings with it another festival.

Over the weekend of June 2 and 3, the Agora Theatre and Ballroom will host the fifth incarnation of its annual Spring Fling.

The Front Bottoms will headline Saturday night and indie rockers Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness will headline Sunday night.

Here’s a rundown of some of the noteworthy acts slated to perform.

Phoebe Bridgers Phoebe Bridgers makes simple music. The tracks on her most recent album, Stranger in the Alps, share DNA with the classic folk songs of America’s past. The album features bare-bones songwriting, sparse, plucky guitar work and an alone-in-alarge-room singing style. Each of the Los Angeles-based musician’s songs can hold their own as a self-contained story, but a full album run-through is necessary to fully appreciate the artist. Songs like “Smoke Signals” and “Georgia” work in tandem to highlight Bridgers’ musical strategy. She invites her listener in with an uncanny ability to deconstruct the magic and devastation of a relationship at every stage. (Michael Wu)

Cherry Pools With only three songs released to date, Cherry Pools offers listeners the unique satisfaction of discovering a band right before they blow up. The four-piece band possesses influences from Phil Collins to MGMT. This convergence of the old and the new embeds itself in the Toronto-based group’s sound, with a catchy electropop energy and booming vocals fused with atmospheric, feel-it-in-the-airtonight synths. Cherry Pools’ debut EP is set for release this fall, but in the meantime, the band has had their fair share of performing experience, touring the country alongside pop/ rock groups PVRIS and I Don’t Know How But They Found Me. Kevin Devine “No Why,” the rollicking opening number from singer-songwriter Kevin Devine’s 2016 album, Instigator, shows off the guy’s power-pop sensibilities and makes Devine sound like a juiced-up version of indie rockers Built to Spill. Last year’s We Are Who’ve Always Been takes the songs from Instigator and strips them to the core. The acoustic versions lack the power-pop punch of their predecessors but have an undeniable beautify nonetheless.

Devine’s tender vocals in the acoustic renditions of “Instigator” and “Magic Magnet” show off his more sensitive side. With its political subtext, folk-y ballad “Both Ways” has a Bright Eyes vibe.

The Front Bottoms Shortly after forming in 2006, the indie-rock duo the Front Bottoms caught on with fans of folky acoustic music. Their latest 2013 release, Talon of the Hawk, debuted on seven Billboard charts and ranked third in the Top New Artist category.

Lead singer Brian Sella’s voice isn’t conventionally great, but its raw quality in songs like “Au Revoir” and “Twin Size Mattress” give the lyrics a neat conversational quality and help the band stand out. Earlier this year, the band dropped its latest release, the EP Ann. (Jacob DeSmit)

Andrew McMahon In the Wilderness with Allen Stone Andrew McMahon, of Jack’s Mannequin and Something Corporate, released his new “Ohio” single earlier this month, just in time to headline the Spring Fling music festival. The song depicts his family’s cross-country move from Bexley, Ohio, to California as a boy. We’re also thrilled to see that Washington state soul singer Allen Stone is accompanying McMahon on stage. The pair have recently toured together, and we can only hope for a killer collaboration on stage. (Laura Morrison)

Brianna Hunt’s project, the ethereal Many Rooms, is hard to nail down. On the debut album, There is a Presence Here, released earlier this year, Hunt’s voice rarely climbs above a haunting whisper. This brand of singing is an appropriate vessel for the bracing intimacy of the big ideas Hunt concerns herself with

Formed in 2012, Seafair expanded to a four-piece when singer-keyboardist Chayla Hope and bassist Joshua Riehl recruited drummer Ryan Kelly and a cellist to join them. The group then added guitarist Mike Flaherty and violinist Andrea Belding.

The band now includes violinist Megan Sullivan, and creates lush soundscapes that have rightly drawn comparisons to Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene. (Niesel)

Tigers Jaw Born out of Scranton, Pennsylvania, in the mid-aughts, Tigers Jaw has seen much growth under frontman Ben Walsh’s leadership. Keyboardist and singer Brianna Collins, who’s the only other current band member, enhance the band’s shimmery indie vibes. We can only hope those old emo vibes are strong with this performance.

“Freakin’ Me Out,” the single from 2016’s Where’d Your Weekend Go, features call-and-response vocals and a vigorous mid-song guitar solo.

It’s a snappy tune that sits well with the other snappy tunes in the band’s ever-growing catalog. (Niesel)

When the Wonder Years played the Agora three years ago, we wrote that “the slow instrumental buildup of ‘Brothers &’ was a perfect way to start the show as it built tension and riled the crowd up.”

Expect something similar this time.

The band’s latest album, Sister Cities, opens with the hard-driving “Raining in Kyoto” and doesn’t let up. Even mid-tempo tunes such as “Pyramids of Salt” and “It Must Get Lonely” simmer with intensity thanks to Dan “Soupy” Campbell’s raspy vocals. (Niesel)

The disc’s first single, “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)” isn’t a huge departure from what the band’s done in the past. Prosperity Social Club to launch Whiskey & Women music series EARLIER THIS MONTH, Prosperity Social Club announced that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll launch the inaugural Whiskey & Women music series this summer.

By Dan Savage I’m a cis woman and recently came out as a lesbian after identifying as bisexual for three years. After having sexual encounters with men and women, I finally admitted to myself that I am gay. Now that I’m finally out, I don’t want to do anything that would make me feel like denying it again. My question is, am I a bad lesbian if I sleep with a guy? I’m currently working 50 hours a week and going to school. I don’t have time for a relationship, and finding casual hookups with women is difficult. A male friend I know and trust recently propositioned me. At first I said no, but now I’m rethinking it. Sex with men doesn’t compare at all to sex with women for me. But my mind says, “It’s still sex!” and I would enjoy it to a point. I feel like I’d definitely have to hide this from my friends. And if I feel guilty enough to hide it, maybe I shouldn’t do it?

Finally identifying as a lesbian was like breathing out for me. But I worry that even being willing to consider this makes me seem bi. I guess I’m looking for permission and absolution. Would this make me a “bad” lesbian? Or would it mean I should identify as bi?

— Girl Asking You I’ve often been accused of having a pro-dick-sitting bias, GAY, so I decided to recuse myself and pass your question on to a couple of lesbians.

“She is way too concerned with labels,” said Lesbian #1. “I used to slip on a dick once every few years — before I quit drinking tequila —and that didn’t make me any less of a raging, homo-romantic dyke. And if her friends give that much of a fuck about who she bones, she needs friends with more interesting hobbies.”

But if identifying as something is important to her, I think identifying as queer might be a better option for now rather than struggling to figure out if she is only bi or only lesbian and only those forever.”

I’m a 32-year-old English guy, and this morning I was diagnosed as HIV-positive. I’m in a bit of a state. I haven’t told anyone, and I needed to get it out. I’m in a long-term, mostly monogamous relationship, but my boyfriend is overseas for work at the moment, so I can’t really talk to him about it. So I’m talking to you.

What I can provide is some perspective. I’m just a little older than you — okay, I’m a whole lot older than you. I came out in the summer of 1981 — and two years later, healthy, young gay men started to sicken and die. During the 1980s and most of the 1990s, learning you were HIV-positive meant you had a year or two to live.

Today, a person with HIV is expected to live a normal life span — so long as they have access to treatment and they’re taking their meds. And once you’re on meds, DADAC, your viral load will fall to undetectable levels and you won’t be able to pass HIV on to anyone else (undetectable = uninfectious).

I don’t mean to minimize your distress, DADAC. The news you just received is distressing and life changing. But it’s not as distressing as it was three decades ago, and it doesn’t mean your life is over. I remember holding a boyfriend on the day he was diagnosed as HIV-positive more than 25 years ago, both of us weeping uncontrollably. His diagnosis meant he was going to die soon. Yours doesn’t.

You have a lot of time left, and if you get into treatment and take your meds, DADAC, you will live a long and healthy life, a life filled with love, connection, and intimacy. Spend some time feeling sorry for yourself, feel the fuck out of those feelings, and then go live your life — live it for all the guys who didn’t get to celebrate their 33rd birthdays.

P.S. Don’t wait until your boyfriend returns to tell him. He needs to get tested right away.
