EAST CLEVELAND MAYOR GARY Norton last month requested for approval of municipal bankruptcy for his beleaguered city. He sent a letter to State Tax Commissioner Joseph Testa asking that a petition be approved and moved forward.

“Despite the city’s best efforts, East Cleveland is insolvent,” Norton wrote. “Based on financial appropriations for the years 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019, the city will be unable to sustain basic fire, police, EMS or rubbish collection service.”

East Cleveland has been in a state of “fiscal emergency” since 2012, according to the State Auditor David Yost’s office. Yost has warned the city repeatedly that drastic moves are required to back away from the brink of financial collapse.

“East Cleveland is in a class of its own,” Yost told Scene when the merger talks were really heating up.

“They’re in fiscal emergency, and nobody’s had the size of structural deficits that we’ve seen in East Cleveland, nobody’s had them going on as long, and no city has done as little to correct the problems.”

Indeed, the long-running gridlocked argument at City Hall has been one of merger vs. development: Should the city merge with Cleveland — and lose its political autonomy — or should leaders work with nearby developers in the University Circle area, drawing them in and eventually broadening the tax base?

Neither option offers a panacea at the moment.

Norton, a supporter of the merger concept for a while, seems now to have moved toward the municipal bankruptcy option. (Norton has famously wavered before. He declared brazenly in his State of the City speech in 2014 that he would not seek a merger. One year later, he began personally distributing petitions to begin the merger process.)

EAST CLEVELAND SEEKS BANKRUPTCY

We may see a major historical moment unfold, regardless of which path East Cleveland takes. Testa got back to Norton recently and told him that the ability to file municipal bankruptcy rests solely with City Council. Norton put forth a piece of legislation that would spark the bankruptcy process, and he’s planning on continuing to hone the ordinance language with council members.

COUNTY COUNCIL HEARS COMPLAINTS FROM HOMELESS ABOUT WOMEN’S SHELTER Last week, members of the local homeless women population got a chance to go public with longbrewing grievances over the county’s only standing shelter for homeless

single women, the Community Women’s Shelter on Payne Avenue.

The County Council’s Health and Human Services committee held a session on the problems — problems which, according to the allegations of residents and homeless activists, have created a hellish situation for some of Cuyahoga County’s most vulnerable and needy residents.

“For years, the shelter has been really awful,” says the Northeast Ohio Coalition for the Homeless’ Brian Davis. “We have closed a number of family and women’s shelters locally, and now we’re down to one for single women.”

Davis explains that the Payne shelter — dubbed the “House of Payne” by residents — has a guaranteed access policy. If you show up, you are granted a bed.

There’s no overflow plan, he claims, and by packing residents in for the night, the shelter also jams together a volatile mix, everything from women suffering from mental illness or drug addiction to women fresh from jail to aging grandmothers and women fleeing domestic violence situations. “It’s a pretty toxic environment,” Davis says.

The shelter — which is funded mainly by the county but run by a private contractor — does not address the written grievances of residents, Davis claims. His organization has tracked numerous complaints the residents have allegedly filed with the management, from bad food and backed-up bathrooms to staff bullying and unfair treatment. Davis says these written complaints are rarely

addressed. “I don’t think the senior management knows what goes on there every day.”

Past efforts to get county leaders to acknowledge the issues at Payne haven’t been smooth, the activist also says, with actual residents allegedly left out of hearings and meet-ups.

At the meeting, residents delivered two-minute statements on the conditions and gripes. Davis says his group is pushing a longterm 12-point plan for steering the facility, and also four immediate fixes: the residents want one staff members transferred — “We call her the Nurse Ratched of the shelter”; all grievances moving forward must be answered in writing in five days; all medical notes, including notes for bed rest, must be respected; and all discharges must be put in writing.

“Residents are not at the point of saying dump the agency and start over,” Davis explains. “They just want a review of every staff member there.”

NORTHEAST OHIO COLLEGE PREPARATORY HIGH SCHOOL STAFF UNIONIZES Last time we checked in on the “wave” of charter school unionization votes, the staff at Northeast Ohio College Preparatory High School was still debating its move, and administrative officials were keeping a close eye on staff meetings. More recently, though, teachers and support staff at the Tremont charter school voted 21-3 to join a union.

The staffers will officially join the Cleveland Alliance of Charter Teachers and Staff, the Ohio Federation of Teachers, and the American Federation of Teachers.

The vote follows the staff unionization at University of Cleveland Preparatory School in March. (Both schools are operated by I Can Schools.)

“It’s not common to try to organize a charter school, but I think the level of unfair labor practices has so irritated people that they have set the table for unionization,” Sandy Theis, executive director of ProgressOhio, told Scene in March.

Northeast Ohio College Preparatory School’s internal atmosphere grew discordant after a round of teacher firings in 2014.

The National Labor Relations Board stepped in to file a complaint against school leadership then — and did so again this year after highranking administrators were caught “surveilling” the nascent union meetings.

“Our efforts the last two years were all about the students in our classrooms. Students need stability in the classroom and the halls of their school,” Miles Paterson, a high school science teacher at NEO, said in a public statement. “We voted to form our union today to make sure we can retain the passionate, talented teachers and staff that make our school effective.”

GROUNDBREAKING UNDERWAY ON EAST SIDE MARKET IN GLENVILLE, NEIGHBORHOOD’S FIRST NEW GROCERY STORE IN A DECADE The Glenville neighborhood, which has endured as a well known food desert in recent years, will soon get its own market and a boost in jobs with the official groundbreaking for the East Side Market.

The market is being revived after it was closed about a decade ago.

During the interim, no other grocery store had opened up.

The new $3.5-million renovation project will reopen the market at East 105th Street and St. Clair Avenue, and will also include a 2,000 sq. ft. medical clinic onsite.

The previous East Side Market closed in 2007. The city approved plans for the market last September, and Northeast Ohio Neighborhood Health Services leased the old building to renovate the old location.

“We realize in order for our residents to make healthy choices they have to have healthy options available to us,” Karen Butler of Northeast Ohio Neighborhood Health Services told Channel 5.

The grocery store is expected to open later this year and create nearly 100 new jobs.

EAST CLEVELAND 3 INCH CLOSER TO NEW TRIAL The â&#x20AC;&#x153;East Cleveland 3â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Derrick Wheatt, Eugene Johnson, and Laurese Glover â&#x20AC;&#x201D; walked out of prison one year ago, but theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re still ďŹ ghting to clear their names and awaiting a new trial.

The three men were convicted of the 1995 murder of Clifton Hudson in East Cleveland. Since then, the case has unfolded in various courts amid a number of legal twists and turns; witnesses have recanted testimony, and new evidence has been uncovered that shows the assistant prosecutor at the time concealing exculpatory documents.

The Ohio Innocence Project at the University of Cincinnati took up the case and began tracking down new evidence that pushed the menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cases forward.

The convictions were thrown out

by Judge Nancy Russo last year.

Legal wrangling on both sides played out over the ensuing year, but recently a Cuyahoga County Appeals Court ruling afďŹ rmed Russoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s order, Fox 8 reports.

Still, though, the path forward remains a bit muddy. The Cuyahoga County Prosecutorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s OfďŹ ce may appeal this newest ruling or proceed with the upcoming trial.

NEWS WILL WORK FOR WORK MetroHealth’s Second annual Transgender Job Fair comes as employment discrimination for trans community continues

By Eric Sandy THE INTERNET OUTRAGE Machine is one of the most pernicious forces in modern society. Take a look: Open up your Facebook page, and you’ll immediately find at least half a dozen polemical screeds about men hanging out in women’s restrooms at Target, about the end of decency and the nasty rise of the “overly PC” culture that this country has embraced.

It’s all very tiring and sad.

It also, naturally, happens to be quite misguided. The transgender community here in Ohio has much more pressing matters to confront.

A major report was published in January 2014 by the Williams Institute, noting that 212,000 workers in Ohio identify as LGBT. (The study doesn’t break down the individual identities, e.g., the transgender proportion.)

A major part of the study involved workplace discrimination against the LGBT community.

Many municipalities and states have laws on the books that protect workers from various forms of discrimination, but it’s only recently that we’re seeing a wave of legislation that amends those laws to include protection against discrimination that targets sexual orientation or gender identity. The study found that, according to a 2013 opinion survey, 68 percent of Ohioans supported these laws; 84 percent “believed they were already in place.” They’re not.

It’s been almost 18 months since a packed-house committee meeting was held at Cleveland City Hall.

The marquee agenda item was a new ordinance that would include “gender identity or expression” in its anti-discrimination language.

Most practically, the ordinance will allow people to use the restroom that corresponds to their own gender identity. The restroom clause is what brought many members of the public to that meeting, mostly overshadowing the broader brushstrokes in the legislation.

Institute study: “As recently as 2010, 78 percent of respondents to the largest survey of transgender people to date reported having experienced harassment or mistreatment at work, and 47 percent reported having been discriminated against in hiring, promotion, or job retention because of their gender identity.”

With that in mind, the second annual Transgender Job Fair took place at MetroHealth in late April. About 100 people showed up, prospective employees seeking work in a welcoming environment.

Jacob Nash, a vocal advocate for the transgender c dsommunity here in Northeast Ohio, told Scene that this year’s event built off the success of last year’s inaugural fair, as well as the increasing awareness that workplace discrimination is a very real and dynamic force.

“It’s often very hard to, first of all, find employment or keep employment when you are transitioning or identify as trans; regardless of whether you’ve transitioned or not, there are always ways of fi nding out who you are,” Nash says. “Finding employment can often be very difficult for individuals within the transgender population.”

The fair was fi lled out by major companies — including Progressive, Starbucks, General Electric and Hilton, for example — stepping up to the plate and identifying themselves as welcoming to transgender

employees. (Nash says feedback from the event was exceptionally positive from prospective employees.)

In Northeast Ohio, the narrative these days is one of local legislators sitting on their hands. Cities like Cleveland and Lakewood seem always to be very close to passing legislation that would add sexual orientation and gender identity to anti-discrimination policies.

Nothing’s been approved yet in those cities. Cleveland City Council members have said that their own ordinance is still inching closer to the fi nish line, but that remains to be seen publicly.

The effect of having a law on the books provides more legal teeth to arguments against discrimination, of course. Brian Spitz of the Spitz Law Firm in Ohio has spent years representing those on the wrong end of that discrimination. He tells Scene that the number of gender identity cases that have landed in his office has only increased in recent years.

He draws a line from employment discrimination based on gender identity — what law firms are seeing more and more of these days — to the racial discrimination at the forefront of American society not so long ago.

“That is a failed argument from the beginning,” Spitz says, “because, to me, it’s essentially the same argument that we would see in the 1940s and during the Civil Rights Movement in saying,

‘Look, I don’t want to have an African American working here.

This is going to make for an uncomfortable work environment.’”

Spitz says that the mountain of case law forming around that litigation is providing a foundation for how workplace discrimination plays out legally. Still, the need for broad, city- or statewide policies remains as great as ever.

State Rep. Nickie Antonio has put forth a bill to add sexual orientation and gender identity into the state’s non-discrimination policy. It hasn’t gotten much traction in the statehouse or the press. Meantime, Rep. Bill Seitz of Cincinnati has advanced an overhaul of the state’s employment discrimination policies, tightening them up to mirror federal law; that bill, however, bears no mention of discrimination against the LGBT community.

Last we heard, Rep. John Becker was considering a bill that would “prevent sexual predators from posing as transgender persons in order to gain easy access to a smorgasbord of women and young girls without disrupting the lives of well-meaning people.” Again, the restroom distraction. Nothing’s been introduced on that front yet, though.

“I think the transgender community and the rest of the LGBT community feels more comfortable in saying, ‘I’m not going to be the one that’s perceived as being wrong,’” Spitz says. “There is the start of a social acceptance of this. While there’s still a segment of the population that’s opposed to this, there’s clearly an entrenched view that they should not be discriminated against. We’re really on a torrent of change, and I think this is going to happen much quicker than prior generations that dealt with this kind of class discrimination.”

FEATURE PHOTOGRAPHER SPENCER TUNICK specializes in large-scale nude shots, a kind of temporary installation that includes anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand naked souls in a variety of settings. The 49-year-old artist, who now lives in upstate New York with his wife and daughters, has produced more than 75 of these shots.

One of those, you’ll remember, was in Cleveland back in 2004. Tunick, with the help of MOCA Cleveland, gathered 2,500 men and women on the East Ninth Street pier.

Twelve years later, we caught up with Tunick as he announces his plans to return to Cleveland for another mass nude installation. Far smaller in scope this time — 100 women — and on private property, the shoot is set for sunrise on Sunday morning, July 17, the week of the Republican National Convention. We talked to him about why the location and the shot are so important to him.

Scene: We’re still a ways out from the RNC, and you’re obviously working on that shot, but what else are you working on right now?

Spencer Tunick: I’m trying to organize about 6,000 people to pose in Bogata, Columbia, for a shot. We have around 12,000 people already signed up. That generally means about half of them will show up.

We’re trying to orchestrate that with the Museum of Modern Art Bogata.

That’s going to happen the first week of June. The location for the installation will be announced about a week beforehand.

And about a month later you’ll return to Cleveland. What was the genesis of the idea to do a shot the week of the Republican National Convention and how long has this been in the works?

I’ve always wanted to do large installation works. It’s not necessarily a title I gave to the work, because it’s really a cross between photography and an installation and a performance. It’s easier to qualify them as installations, albeit temporary.

I was thinking about doing some work in D.C. I wanted to document the works in a film version, not so much a documentary, but a film that would have a combination of documentary and animation. Sort of fantasy scenes. Not sci-fi per se,

I had asked him about his film and if he’d be interested, and he was busy but referred me to others, and I sort of let the project go for the time being.

but dreamlike in scenes that don’t really exist. I wanted to have John Quincy Adams walking from the White House and jumping in the Potomac River naked and skinnydipping, for example. I had this idea to have conceptually and physically impossible works with the body in a fantasy scene, a mosaic art film that would document the installation.

And then I saw a wonderful film called Chicago 10, directed by Brett Morgen. [Ed. note: The 2007 film combines archived materials and current commentary to explore the

What brought the idea back?

In 2013, I was at Burning Man and a friend had a mirror that was about 10-inches wide and was posing for me in the desert. She was reflecting her face in the mirror and I was doing a nude and I started thinking if I came back to the desert with 300 or 400 women holding spheres, I could make a really powerful work when the sun rises. So I applied for a grant from Burning Man, the idea being using the grant money to purchase the spheres, and I got turned down. But the idea was to get these spheres for an eventual installation at the RNC. In a way, I was going to do the desert work to fund the RNC work. I couldn’t believe I got turned down: I thought Burning Man would want to push the boundaries of their enclosed area in Nevada, and I thought it was a reasonable way to help an artist out.

So I sucked it up and decided to do it on my own, basically.

I never really do protest work. And I thought maybe I don’t want Cleveland to be a protest work. Maybe I want it to be a work that women can be part of, maybe to heighten the idea that women will decide the outcome of this election and will have a more powerful presence in the future of politics, the future of the country, and the future of the world. It’s not so much a protest but an action, a wake-up call to the absurdity of politics and discrimination.

The deplorable rhetoric from Trump and others against women during the campaign had to play a part.

I spent a lot of time with my wife working on the language for the website [spencertunickcleveland.com].

I wrote it with her and the work is for my daughters, for their future, for them not to grow up in a society with hate, for them to grow up in a world with less violence toward women and more opportunities for them. And there are other subject matters, concerning the environment for instance, and I think people can read into the final photograph and get their own message out of the work and the idea of this ray of light extending over the city. It’s sort of to energize the city, to heat it up, and this ray of light bringing knowledge and helping maybe to tone down the rhetoric of hate and prejudice against women preceding the convention.

And working on private property and with a smaller group was probably the only way to get this done during the convention?

Yes, and I’m excited about this one and coming back. I needed to make the work and keep the participants safe. So we picked a location that was far enough away that it could be executed without problems from the

police and to not make it a protest of sorts. I just want to get it done. I don’t want to hassle with permits, and there are probably lots of people trying to get as close as possible to the event.

My work is an art action, and I just want to get it done. That’s why I want to work with 100 people.

You said ‘coming back,’ and that works in a couple of ways. Your wife is from Akron.

Yeah, Kristin’s from Akron. She was walking down the street in 1993, on St. Mark’s in New York, and at the time I was doing individual group portraits on the street. I would meet people in cafes or bars or as I walked down the street. The streets were my art store; people were my medium.

I would look for people I wanted to shoot. I saw her and thought she was amazing. I asked her to pose for me.

I was so nervous at the time that I forgot to mention it was a nude. I gave her my card; she never called. A year later, I ran into her and I remembered asking her to pose and I did again.

Nothing. A year after that I saw her again and asked her again, and in the meantime her boyfriend had taken her to an exhibition of my work. She said yes, and we just enjoyed hanging out. I never thought it would happen that way but back when I first met her, I did turn to my friend and say, “I’m married.” It became a thing that day, looking at people on the street and deciding whether we could spend the rest of our lives with them. I wondered why I said it at the time, but it happened.

And you’re coming back in another sense: You did a large installation in 2004 on the pier, and it was your first legally sanctioned work in America outside of New York City at the time, right?

Yes, through some people from the Akron Art Museum we connected with the director of MOCA Cleveland, Jill Snyder, and started talking about my work and she was interested in doing some work with me. I didn’t think it would be possible. It just felt like outside of New York it wouldn’t work. But almost 2,500 people posed.

I thought it might be 300, but I was very surprised that the mindset of the body in America and people’s openness to be nude and pose nude was there.

There was this unconscious need for people to express themselves through their body.

What’s the difference in attitudes between, say, Bogata and New York and Ohio?

I often think New York is jaded as far as everyone is comfortable

and used to the body, especially now where the nude in public seems to be like it’s always been there. Maybe if I never did my work it’d be different, but every photographer now has a nude on the street or in public in their repertoire. And we know about it a lot more now because of the internet. But pre-1995, you had to search obscure books in art libraries to see it. I think everyone’s used to having access to the naked body on the internet, and in images, and on television, and in movies, and in magazines.

There’s freedom because of the efforts of Larry Flynt, as well as people like Robert Maplethorpe, and more freedom for museums to show works inside. But outside, the body is still a lightning bolt. It’s still very much a taboo area. And that’s my terrain; that’s my canvas. If I do a work in South America, people will embrace it because they enjoy my works as visual objects, but the fact that they’re doing it, the fact that the government is open to the idea, is a major step toward many other freedoms. It’s not as jaded as New York. In America, I can still be arrested in most states for what I do.

How can people volunteer to be models for this?

People will submit a photo — it doesn’t have to be a nude — and I’ll choose 100 women. I want people of all shapes and sizes and ethnicities and skin tonalities. People can also submit some writing on why they want to participate and those, in my experience, have been really powerful.

They come with all these stories and body issues and political issues and their motivations. It’s quite interesting.

Does the city know this is happening?

Not yet. That’s what Scene is for. I’m very excited about this one, just to see what happens and people’s reactions, to see whether they get behind it or come against it. Either way, in the end, there will be this really solid artwork that will last forever. It’s not just a flash.

It’s something solid and hopefully meaningful in my family’s eyes. I have the support of the museums there, the good people of Cleveland, those who have posed before, and I think it’s going to shine a little wisdom on the convention.

George Bellows Exhibit at CMA The Cleveland Museum of Art’s yearlong centennial celebration continues with the opening of Stag at Sharkey’s: George Bellows and the Art of Sports. Bellows (1882-1925) was a letterman at Ohio State University and a semipro basketball player turned artist. Using his masterpiece Stag at Sharkey’s (1909, part of the CMA’s permanent collection) as a focal point, this special centennial exhibition explores the artist’s work relating to sport and fitness through nearly two dozen drawings, paintings and lithographs. As the CMA explains: “For Bellows, sport and fitness were exhilarating pursuits, and his resultant depictions of skill and rivalry stand as potent symbols for the brash competitive spirit of America itself during the rapidly accelerating Industrial Age.” The exhibition remains on view in the Julia and Larry Pollock Focus Gallery through

ART WALK INTO THE FUTURE Tremont’s artistic event overhaul signals new era for neighborhood

A quote from Harvey Dent/Two Face in The Dark Knight might seem like a strange way to begin an article about the new Walkabout Tremont, but if you’ll allow me a moment to explain, I believe it exemplifies Tremont’s legacy as an arts community.

The second weekend in May is billed as a new era for Tremont. After more than 20 years, the Tremont ArtWalk is now Walkabout Tremont.

With very few galleries to walk to, the name change signals the current direction of the neighborhood — for better or worse.

This new monthly series expands the event to stretch throughout the weekend, promising an increased emphasis on art, music, street entertainment, local history, and restaurant and bar specials. However, as of this week’s deadline, very little information could be found anywhere online. The “Walkabout Map” page of their website is filled with gibberish written in Latin. Their Facebook page doesn’t list any specific details either, but organizers promise printed maps with detailed info will be in the neighborhood in time for this Friday’s kickoff event, from 6 to 9 p.m.

“Walkabout Tremont is a reimagination of the Tremont ArtWalk — a continuation of the artistic spirit and innovation Jean Brandt fostered for 23 years,” says Lynn Murray, president of the Tremont West Development Corporation Board of Directors. “The essence of Walkabout Tremont is a new emphasis on all that is creative in our community: gallery art, performance art, fashion, food, specialty retail and services, as well as our churches and local history.”

After more than 20 years of grassroots, DIY efforts by local artists and gallery owners, Murray says that a core group of roughly 20 volunteers, including artists, business owners and residents, has been meeting for the past six months to organize this new monthly event that properly reflects the current state of the neighborhood.

CHILDHOOD AIN’T KID STUFF Growing up is a dark and witty challenge in Matilda the Musical, now at Playhouse Square

By Christine Howey WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT, it’s amazing any of us survive our early years. We’re born as tiny and utterly defenseless creatures, entirely subject to the whims of the strange adults who claim they’re our parents.

And we stay that way for many years, until we can wrench ourselves free of their domination. For some, that’s not a particularly charming way to start an existence.

And that is the feeling that is brought to life in Matilda, the Musical, now at Playhouse Square. Based on the delightfully dark Roald Dahl book, this stunning production is a real workout for the cast members, many of whom are very young and very talented. While the lyrics by Tim Minchin are clever, his sing-song-y score never really captures the fire and brimstone of Dahl’s original work and this book adaptation by Dennis Kelly.

But that doesn’t mean the musical doesn’t work; it just works on you differently than you might expect.

To begin with, Matilda Wormwood is a precocious — nay, a geniuslevel — kindergartener. She lives in a town bordering London, reads Dostoyevsky in the original Russian, and is always delving into books of one sort or another. This drives her parents to distraction, since they are cultural bottom-feeders, both addicted to the telly when they’re not yelling at Matilda for sticking her nose in books.

Her father won’t even concede that Matilda is a girl, since he wanted a boy and is sticking with that story.

Matilda finds a salvation of sorts in Miss Honey, her teacher who quickly recognizes the smarts the little girl possesses. There is also a librarian, Mrs. Phelps (Ora Jones), who is enthralled by Matilda’s ability to spin stories the tyke has read about, such as the one she relates about the acrobat and the escape artist. But those empathetic grownups are often blocked by a cruel headmistress, Miss

While the adult performers in this production serve the story exceptionally well, they don’t create any particular magic by themselves.

As Mr. Wormwood, Quinn Mattfeld is properly tormented by Matilda, especially when she plays pranks on him such as sneaking bleach into his hair gel and pouring glue in his hat. But Mattfeld doesn’t have as much fun as he could with these moments. Cassie Silva does a bit better

Trunchbull, who stomps anything gentle and vulnerable in her path, particularly the small kiddies in her charge. Played by a male actor, the towering and fearsome Miss T, who refers to her students as maggots, is a sphincter-puckering apparition from every child’s worst Skittles overloadinduced nightmare.

In short, this is a view of early childhood from the child’s point of view: skewed, terrifying and entirely relatable for most of us. The set design by Rob Howell enhances that perspective with towering, rolling units representing bookshelves and a glorious galaxy of letters just waiting to be arranged into patterns that could

In the featured role of Miss Trunchbull, David Abeles does the predictable snarls and muscle-flexing quite well, but he never creates his own twist on the character that would make it stand out. Playing Miss Honey and Mrs. Phelps, Jennifer Blood and Ora Jones are sweet and lovely, as required.

As for the kids in the ensemble, they perform like the professional troupers they are, dancing Peter Darling’s vigorous choreography with precision and verve. They are called

upon to do a lot of heavy lifting in this long and complex production, and they never flag for a second.

Of course, in a show like this it all comes down to the actor in the title role. But unlike in Annie, where the lead role is equipped with a few enduring and memorable songs, the lead role here has to be created without such assistance. Indeed, Matilda has only two featured songs, “Naughty” and “Quiet,” and neither are likely to send you out of the theater humming.

So it falls to the trio of young girls who share the role of Matilda, to make this character come alive. On this night, the title role was played

By Sam Allard CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR exploded into theaters last weekend, kicking off what is destined to be another historically profitable summer for Hollywood studios. The next three months will be awash in blockbuster action romps, premium animated fare and a slew of raunchy comedies.

Here’s a brief taste of some of the biggest titles arriving at a cineplex near you.

5.13 | Money Monster Director: Jodie Foster. Starring Caitriona Balfe, George Clooney, Giancarlo Esposito, Jack O’Connell, Julia Roberts, Dominic West Jodie Foster directs this thriller about TV personality Lee Gates (Clooney) and a viewer (Jack O’Connell) who takes Gates hostage after losing his family’s money due to some bad financial advice that Lee offered on his TV show.

5.20 | Nice Guys Director: Shane Black. Starring Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, Angourie Rice, Matt Bomer, Margaret Qualley, Keith David, Kim Basinger Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling portray, respectively, a private eye and a hit man who have to work together in this period piece set in 1970s Los Angeles.

5.27 | X-Men: Apocalypse Director: Bryan Singer. Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Lawrence, Sophie Turner It’s the next big superhero bash to hit screens this summer, and it looks like a dandy. The X-Men, per usual, must unite against a common enemy or else face common destruction. This time, they’re up against the world’s first mutant, Apocalypse, played by Oscar Isaac doing his finest Ivan Ooze impersonation. Bryan Singer, who directed the first two X-Men films and, most recently, X-Men: Days of Future Past, is at the helm of the franchise yet again.

6.3 | Me Before You Director: Thea Sharrock. Starring Emilia Clarke, Sam Claflin Ding-ding-ding! Date movie alert!

The Game of Thrones star meets the Hunger Games star in this ultimate

chick flick extravaganza based on the best-selling novel of the same name

by JoJo Moyes. A lovable British bumpkin (Clarke) falls for the wealthy, recently paralyzed man she’s hired to care for. Tears, British accents and a crooning Ed Sheeran-heavy soundtrack co-star.

6.17 | Finding Dory Directors: Andrew Stanton, Angus MacLane. Starring Ellen Degeneres, Albert Brooks, Idris Elba Never bet against Pixar, folks.

This sequel to the 2003 Pixar classic Finding Nemo focuses on the forgetful blue fish Dory, voiced by the impeccable Degeneres. Lord knows why or how Dory gets lost, but chances are, all of the gloriously animated sea creatures will stumble upon some exquisite meaning of life in this one.

6.24 | Independence Day: Resurgence Director: Roland Emmerich.

Starring Maika Monroe, Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum Twenty years after the original Independence Day, disaster-film czar Roland Emmerich returns for a destructo-sequel. Earth has maximized its alien defenses in the interim, but a new — assuredly massive — threat looms. Many of the original cast members reprise their roles in a movie that should, if nothing else, temporarily quench your thirst for ’90s movie nostalgia.

Swiss Army Man Directors: Dan Kwan, Daniel Schienert. Starring Paul Dano, Daniel Radcliffe, Mary Elizabeth Winstead Worth mentioning here — not for its box-office potential but for its weirdness — this limited-release indie stars Dano as a man stranded in the wilderness who befriends a corpse played by Harry Potter himself.

Expect one of the more surreal films of the summer season.

7.1 | The Legend of Tarzan Director: David Yates. Starring Alexander Skaarsgard, Margot Robbie, Christoph Waltz Speaking of Harry Potter, this Tarzan film is director David Yates’ intervening project between Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part

II and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The Potter Universe was done a great service by the British technician and soul wringer, and Edgar Rice Burroughs’ timeless tale of the man raised by apes looks to be an equal beneficiary. With jaw-dropping visuals and an all-star cast — Waltz!

— this one could be a surprise hit of the summer.

7.15 | Ghostbusters Director: Paul Feig. Starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones This all-female reboot of the 1984 paranormal comedy classic stars some of the funniest women working in Hollywood (and New York City) today.

With Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Spy) at the helm, count on Ghostbusters to bring a fresh take to a beloved franchise. As always, count on Melissa McCarthy to outperform all your expectations. Chris Hemsworth, in bitchin’ librarian glasses, co-stars.

7.22 | Star Trek: Beyond Director: Justin Lin. Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg Fast and Furious director Justin Lin helms the sequel to 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness. This time around, Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and his sidekick Spock (Zachary Quinto) take on a group of evil aliens.

7.29 | Jason Bourne Director: Paul Greengrass.

Starring Matt Damon, Julia Styles, Alicia Vikander The plot of every Jason Bourne movie sounds the same — Bourne again, am I right? — and this one’s no different: the amnesiac espionage guru, finally remembering who he is, uncovers truths about his past.

Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander joins the fun in what should be a return to form for this guiltypleasure franchise. Paul Greengrass, who directed Bourne’s Supremacy and Ultimatum, returns to the chair.

Bad Moms Directors: Jon Lucas, Scott Moore.

Starring Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Christina Applegate When three overworked moms get pushed to the brink, they decide to dip

their toes into the refreshing waters of irresponsible parenthood. Drunken revelry ensues. Kathryn Hahn, an underappreciated comic talent, joins straight ladies Kunis and Bell for this Hangover-esque bacchanal.

Among other things, look for the boob-commentary scene that’s a direct knockoff of this spring’s The Boss.

8.5 | Suicide Squad Director: David Ayer. Starring Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto Though D.C. has yet to even approach Marvel in the scope of its cinematic universe, this ensemble film, which assembles the D.C. villains to take down the world’s most cutthroat bad guys, should be a refreshing deviation from the standard superhero film. Harley Quinn, the Joker, Deadshot, Enchantress, Boomerang — who are these people? We’ll find out in August.

8.19 | Ben-Hur Director: Timur Bekmambetov.

Starring Jack Huston, Nazanin Boniadi, Morgan Freeman In 1959, Ben-Hur became the winning-est film in the history of the Oscars, nabbing 11 awards including Best Picture and most of the technical categories. It was also the top-grossing film that year.

It’s unlikely that this remake, with a cast of relative unknowns and a director best known for the Russian fantasy films Night Watch (2004), and Day Watch (2006), will repeat the original’s success. But it ought to be a orgiastic visual feast with what we can confidently predict will be the best chariot race sequence of the year.

War Dogs Director: Todd Phillips. Starring Jonah Hill, Miles Teller, Ana de Armas Two dudes game the system and nab a coveted arms deal with the Pentagon during the Afghan War. Jonah Hill and Miles Teller star in this true comedy that doesn’t look quite as good as 21 Jump Street, but should easily surpass, in quality, Miles Teller’s recent forays in the Divergent franchise.

A BETTER FIT FOR THE FLATS Bold Food and Drink delivers the steakhouse vibe without the sticker shock

By Douglas Trattner KEN STEWART HADN’T EVEN made it all the way home to Akron before Demetrios Atheneos staked a claim on his soon-to-be-shuttered restaurant in the Flats East Bank. One of the first restaurants to open in the redeveloped Flats, Ken Stewart’s also was one of the first to close, a victim of bad timing, boundary-pushing prices and more than a little hubris.

All Atheneos and partner Fady Chamoun had to do to ready the glitzy space, a theatrical dining room with nautical and industrial nods softened by plush design elements, was to scrub away all traces of the outgoing restaurateur, a task more challenging than it sounds given that sketches of the man appeared on every door, window, menu and even some of the wine bottles.

With prices in the stratosphere, Ken Stewart’s was the embodiment of a special-occasion restaurant. To succeed, Bold Food and Drink, its replacement, would need to pull in diners every day of the week. Sure, lower prices help, but the draw needs to be more visceral than merely financial. Fortunately, the incoming chef had more than a little practice when it comes to concocting dishes and menus that give diners something to tweet about.

When Bodega opened on Coventry,

Atheneos was there. When Deagan’s set the Lakewood dining scene on fire, Atheneos was there. It is this chef, after all, who manages to fill a literal barn of a building, the former Hoggy’s in Valley View, with giddy diners on a consistent basis. At all of his current places — Oak Barrel, Forage and Bold — the menus are long, approachable and immensely appealing, with only a little overlap from spot to spot.

As the name implies, the food here is bold, in conception, presentation and flavor. There is no assembly required to enjoy the lobster nachos ($9), four perfectly composed wedges, each with a generous allotment of chopped seafood affixed to its crunchy base by a cushion of creamy guacamole. A wee

Here’s a pro tip: If the chef is Greek, order the octopus ($12). We did and we immediately declared it among the best in town. It’s not just that the meat had the ideal texture — firm but yielding, with charred bits from the grill — it’s that the still-warm chunks were tossed into a cool Mediterranean salad overflowing with ripe tomatoes, cucumber, hearts of palm and just enough feta. This is the kind of dish one could eat daily and never grow bored.

I’d steer clear of the charred street corn on a stick ($10) — unless you’re wearing a bib or indeed standing on the street. You’ll be smiling, but that smile will be shellacked with salty cotija cheese, spicy Mexican crema and

drizzle of sweet soy counters the highs of fresh lemon. Bold’s staging of its fish and chips ($8) in a mini deep-fry basket doesn’t come off as contrived, but rather natural, as though it came straight out of the fryer. Filled to the rim with lightly battered and fried smelts sitting atop a mound of fries, the fish is hot, fresh and mild tasting.

I thoroughly enjoyed my $50 steak at Ken Stewart’s, but not one-third more than the $34 ribeye I devoured at Bold. The one-pound Certified Angus Beef steak benefitted from the same pricy 1,400-degree broiler as its predecessor, and it was cooked

perfectly. Unlike before, there are options now for diners who want great steak but don’t want to unload their Apple stock. A half-pound grass-fed sirloin from a local farm is $21, a populist price for a popular cut. If you’re getting steak, you’re getting a side of the roasted Killbuck Valley mushrooms ($7) and — why not? — the sauteed Brussels sprouts with a hint of maple syrup.

Sure, there are times when a diner might crave a few more surprises from the Bold crew. The shrimp and grits ($21) are as pleasant as a long summer day, and Bold does burgers ($13) right, a fat Ohio beef patty topped with sharp cheddar and meaty bacon. And the braised short ribs sound delicious, as do the shrimp tacos, roasted bone marrow, Thai lettuce wraps, Maine lobster roll ... but it can feel a bit like a “Greatest Hits” version of a menu.

But don’t fault Atheneos. He knows that you can’t stay busy by peddling esoteric foodstuffs. You keep your seats stuffed by offering tantalizing food at palatable prices in a comfortable and attractive setting.

That describes Bold, which delivers a dramatic steakhouse vibe without the sticker shock.

EUSTATHEA KAVOURAS HAD dreamed of owning her own restaurant since her youth, when her home was always filled with Greek food. “It seems like we were always baking,” she says of life with Greek parents. “It was just like My Big Fat Greek Wedding.”

But after being mentored in Indian cooking later in life, she fell in love with that cuisine — a love affair now more than 15 years in the making.

“Indian food is very complex; it’s a lot to perfect,” she says.

After 22 years in the medical field, Kavouras is finally chasing her dream with Greedy Girl Ethnic Street Flavors (2158 South Taylor Rd., 216-202-6015), a 900-square-foot quick-serve breakfast and lunch eatery with seating for 24.

It will bring together both her native Greek and adopted Indian cuisines.

She’s presently in the second phase of an IndieGogo campaign and hopes to be open in June.

“They both have deeply rich, flavorful foods,” she says of the pairing.

Kavouras immersed herself in Indian culture during a series of trips overseas. In Bombay, she’d often slip into a cab alone and travel to areas suggested by natives to explore the street food scene. She’d watch as groups of 20 or more gathered around vendors selling pani puri, crispy snacks filled with potato, spices and spicy water.

“By the time they’d served the twentieth customer, the first was back for another round,” she recalls. “It was like watching a juggler.”

At Greedy Girl, Kavouras will adapt that high-speed peddling to native favorites like sali boti. In India, this sweet and sour chicken dish typically is eaten with rice or bread. Here, it will be turned into a sandwich and finished with potato sticks and cilantro leaves.

The savory counterpart to that sweetness is the chicken Frankie, which she describes as quintessential street food. The roti wrap is filled with chicken cooked in spices and tomato and topped with cilantro and

raw onion. “If you talk to someone in Bombay and mention ‘Frankie,’ their eyes will just light up,” she says.

Also on the menu is masala dosa, a large crepe made from rice flour and filled with potato and spices. Okra fries will be sprinkled with Indian spices and lime juice.

While individual items won’t be a fusion of Greek and Indian cuisines, they can be combined on a single platter. “You might get an Indian sandwich with a side of Greek potatoes and Greek salad,” she explains.

For that salad, Kavouras will be using her own Greek dressing with kalamata olive oil. After all, olive oil was the first thing she loved about Greek cooking as a child, when her grandmother fed her a spoonful every morning.

Street-style twists will be applied to familiar Greek favorites like pastitsio.

Typically a casserole-style dish, the Greedy Girl version will resemble ground lamb (or meat-free) balls sprinkled with kefalotyri cheese. You won’t find any traditional gyros here, but there will be a lamb sandwich with similar spices and tzatziki sauce.

Greedy Girl will also serve skewered char-broiled pork souvlaki dressed in a summery olive oil/lemon sauce.

For the morning crowd, omelet roll sandwiches cooked in cast iron skillets will come in Greek and Indian varieties. A baklava waffle, with honey syrup and nuts, also will be offered.

Baklava will also be on the dessert menu, along with Greek doughnuts dipped in honey, nuts and cinnamon; homemade Greek yogurt; and Indian ice cream. And with the farmers’ market following she has already cultivated for her salted pecan cookies, she says she’ll have no problem converting those fans to Greedy Girl.

“Clevelanders are used to a lot of different cuisines,” she says. “They clamor for them.”

WELL, THEY ARE RUMORS NO more. On Cinco de Mayo, no less, Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville confirmed that Cleveland will be the site of one of its iconic restaurants. The island-themed chain, with two dozen locations, will take over the spot in Flats East Bank originally earmarked for Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill.

Margaritaville, which launched in Key West in 1987, is now a global brand inspired by the “carefree” lifestyle of singer, songwriter and author Jimmy Buffett. The festive restaurants strive to evoke the sort of tropical escapism Buffett characterizes in his music.

The expansive complex will comprise a full-service restaurant, multiple bars, a performance stage and retail store — all of which will be at home on Cleveland’s waterfront.

“We are thrilled to bring the Margaritaville experience to the Flats in Cleveland and to continuing to work closely with our great partners from the Wolstein Group and Fairmount Properties,” said David Crabtree, president/CEO of International Meal Company U.S., the operator of Margaritaville Cleveland.

“We look forward to bringing escapism to the city and becoming active members of the Cleveland community.”

The approachable menus are loaded with casual fare like fish and chips, coconut shrimp, fish tacos, and, yes, Cheeseburgers in Paradise.

Of course, most of the patrons are there for the margaritas and “boat drinks.”

Look for the Cleveland location to open later this year.

JEFF RUBY’S STEAKHOUSE DEAL IS DEAD, SAYS LANDLORD Back in December we broke the news that Cinci-based Jeff Ruby’s Steakhouse was planning to open in the old National City Bank lobby, originally home to the Cleveland Trust Co. Today we are breaking the news that the deal officially is dead.

“No, it’s not happening,” says Frank Sinito, CEO of Clevelandbased Millennia Companies, the owner of the building. “All I can say is it wasn’t on me.”

Work already had commenced on the column-lined lobby space of the Garfield Building, one of Cleveland’s most spectacular interiors. Much of the 11-story structure, built in the 1890s, is being converted into apartments.

All is not lost, says Sinito.

“There is definitely a plan [for the space] and we’re excited about it; it’s just a little premature to talk about it,” he says. “We’re going to do something really fantastic.”

Meanwhile, it was just announced that Jeff Ruby’s would open a location in Columbus. Multiple attempts to reach Ruby and his representatives have been fruitless.

EAT bites 1981, and have since added family friendly locations in Chagrin Falls, Shaker Square, Hudson, Mayfield Village, Medina, Mentor and Rockside.

But the team has done the exact opposite of slow down. In fact, they are speeding up.

“It seems like it goes in cycles, but now everything seems to be working out,” says founder Larry Shibley.

“When we opened our Rockside location seven or eight years ago, we got bogged down, the economy changed and we just sort of absorbed for a while.”

In addition to launching its first downtown location, Yours Truly is wrapping up a transformation project in Beachwood.

That location has been closed for about two months.

“This has allowed us to be handicapped accessible, convert the dining room to more comfortable booth seating and put in a whole new infrastructure,” says Shibley, adding that the restaurant will have all new plumbing, foundation and other essential improvements.

Look for a June reopening.

Next in line will be downtown Cleveland, where Yours Truly is preparing to open in September in the historic Halle Building (1228 Euclid Ave.). “Downtown is going to be phenomenal, with a two-level dining room, a mezzanine that overlooks Euclid Avenue, 20-foot ceilings and lots of historic architectural restoration,” Shibley explains.

The restaurant will seat approximately 130 guests in the dining room, mezzaninie, outdoor patio and an indoor “lobby patio.”

It also will feature a full bar with bartenders, expanded wine lists and cocktail menus.

Also on the company’s to-do list is an extensive expansion and renovation project at its second-oldest restaurant, Chagrin Falls.

“It’s on our list of projects, but we haven’t finalized any of the plans there,” Shibley says. “Our intent is to expand. If it does happen, we would have to expand the kitchen as well, so that would require closing. But we intend to carefully engineer the whole project so we can minimize the closing to a real short period of time.”

Even before the Chagrin Falls project begins, Shibley says Yours Truly could add a Lakewood or Rocky River location. Also in the plans is an Akron-Canton presence, and possibly Columbus or Pittsburgh.

“We would like to, in the next five

or six years, open at least three or four more, including an out-of-town location with the hopes of proving to ourselves that our concept is portable into a fresh market.”

MAGNOLIA, A NEW CLUB, WILL JOIN EAST BANK ENTERTAINMENT SCENE To make your way into Magnolia, a new club coming to the Flats East Bank this summer, you’ll have to walk through a small storefront that sells made-to-order doughnuts.

“The secret to the space is that the entrance is through the doughnut shop,” says owner Bobby Rutter. “It’s a little hidden element that adds a little bit of mystery.”

When you do make it past the shop, you’ll enter a 4,000-square-foot club (1167 Front St.) that is being developed by Rutter and his partner Michael Schwartz, the team behind the seasonal open-air club FWD. “Yeah, we’re going indoors,” Rutter jokes. “This is a little smaller, a little different. The clubs will have good synergy because they’re so closely located. It also enables us to keep our employees and crowd happy throughout the year.”

Magnolia’s sleight-of-hand entrance will be between Big Bang and the entrance to the apartment building.

The space has 20-foot ceilings and will feature a steel magnolia tree that climbs all the way to the top while its branches extend clear to the outer edges of the space.

“It will feel like you’re sitting under a giant industrial tree,” he adds.

The walls will be festooned with colorful graffiti-style art along the lines of Banksy and Mr. Brainwash.

Rutter says that early in the evenings, the club will be a stylish place to watch sports. Later on, DJs will play everything from old-school dance music to more contemporary tracks. The club will seat approximately 325 people.

Magnolia will have six drafts and a cocktail menu with a lot of playful, sharable, big-batch cocktails, not unlike a tiki bar.

Now to those doughnuts: Rutter is also a partner with Shawn Monday, chef and owner of Flip Side, One Red Door and Three Palms restaurants.

He will be in charge of developing and executing the concept, which will be selling hot and fresh doughnuts late into the night.

Magnolia will open its doors a few days after the RNC leaves town.

MUSIC ARENA-CORE TO THE CORE Hardcore heroes Hatebreed have high regard for Cleveland

By Jeff Niesel SINCE 1994, HATEBREED — singer Jamey Jasta, bassist Chris Beattie, guitarist Wayne Lozinak, guitarist Frank Novinec and drummer Matthew Byrne — have straddled the hardcore and hard rock worlds. As a result, the band has a diverse audience of fans who like both metal and punk rock.

Last year, after two years on the road, Jasta & Co. returned to the studio to record The Concrete Confessional, an album that, with songs such as “A.D.,” “Looking Down the Barrel of Today” and “The Apex Within,” addresses social issues without overtly making a political statement.

With its guttural vocals and shredding guitar solos, “A.D.” sounds as heavy as anything by speed metal acts such as Slayer and Anthrax. The band kicks off its North American tour on May 13 in Cleveland, its first headlining show in town since 2012. We spoke to singer Jamey Jasta and Cleveland native and guitarist Frank Novinec in separate phone interviews.

The band formed back in 1994.

Did you set out to fuse metal and hardcore from the start?

Jasta: We would go down to Long Island and play with Six Feet Under and Internal Bleeding. Or we’d go up to Boston and play with Anal Cunt. We would play all these different shows.

We could play a grind show or a death metal show. We opened for Napalm Death. At a lot of the metal shows, we did better with the audience or sold more merch than we did at the punk or hardcore shows. We could play with straight-edge type of bands and the Victory type of bands, but some of the shows and the audiences were too cool for school. We appreciated the opportunity to play for them, but we knew that the bands that had longevity and the bands that had the big followings were ones that spoke to different audiences. The first real taste of success was when we opened for Machine Head on Halloween night in 1996. We had a demo out and could reinvest in T-shirts. Before we had even played, we had sold out of every T-shirt. This was in the mid-’90s. Even

the bigger name metal bands were Terror and had to make the decision playing smaller places. That’s how it to throw my job and responsibilities was. Anthrax was playing small places out the window and jump in a van. and even Pantera had scaled it down.

Things didn’t pan out with them, but I We started to see the Roadrunner was fortunately able to join Hatebreed, audience that was out there that didn’t and it’s been a fun ride for sure. We care about the scene politics. They just crossed over into the metal scene from cared about heavy music doing Ozzfest and tours and having a with Slayer and good time.

on, we started playing more diverse types of shows.

Novinec: I wasn’t in the band at the time. I joined in 2006. In 1995, I was playing in [the Cleveland hardcore group] Integrity and had just gotten out of [the Cleveland hardcore act] Ringworm. When Hatebreed started, Integrity was one of their influences and they reached out to us and we did a split record together. We’ve had a long friendship since then. That’s how I made the connection with them and I’ve been going strong with them for 10 years. In 2004, I was working at a tire store on Brookpark Road. I’m a proud westsider. I was in the tire industry for 13 years. My whole family worked for the Ford Motor Company. I have a strong blue-collar background.

You spent two years on the road after the release of your last album. What were some of the highlights?

Jasta: Definitely doing the tour with [metal guitarist] Zakk Wylde because it was like a mini Ozzfest second stage for us. And we got to go to places we hadn’t been to in forever, like the Edmontons and the Montanas, places that we don’t normally hit on a headline run that were hungry for music and a great show and a diverse bill. We did Columbus on our own headlining and we had 600 people on a Sunday night. Three years later, we go back with Zakk Wylde and there are 3,000 people. That’s a big step up. The more people you play to, the more receptive the audience will be the next time, as long you leave it all on

the stage. Going from that tour to the Slipknot show and bringing out a new lighting package was great. It put us on arena level again.

Novinec: I’m a rock guy. I grew up in Cleveland. I’m a KISS guy. I’m a Blue Oyster Cult guy. I was turned onto music at a very early age. I used to dance with shit in my diapers when “Smoke on the Water” came out in 1972. I had Who and Stones records when I was 7 years old. Fast forward to 30 years later, I’m playing on stage with Blue Oyster Cult because I became friends with them and we’re direct support for KISS. You can’t write this any better for me. It’s a dream come true. All this has been highlights. This is no rock star scenario where we hate each other. We send each other stupid fifth grade-mentality texts. We have that bond.

I think you started recording in the fall of last year with producer Zeuss (Rob Zombie, Soulfly). What was that experience like?

Jasta: We did Rock on the Range and I watched Slipknot in a stadium. When we left that tour, I was joking with Jim Root and Corey Taylor. I remember seeing them in a little club. I remember playing in Des Moines and seeing the guys in the front row singing along in a tiny bar. Isn’t it funny how they became stadium metal? I joked that we were arena-core. To see little songs in an arena filled with 12,000 people in Grand Rapids, I was so inspired. Every night, I would write [new songs]. I knew going back to the studio that we would have big songs that would be bangers in small clubs but also translate to a Rock on the Range.

Having that tour so close to the studio was a good thing because it helped us tap into an energy. The last time we did arenas was 2012.

Novinec: We’re always working with him. With this record and the last record, we had time. There was time to reflect and go back and we could change the arrangements and whatnot and decide what needed to be on there and what didn’t. In the past, we might not have had the time. MUSIC complicated because Hatebreed has grown into this band that tours with Five Finger and Disturbed and will still play in a club with Napalm Death.

We want to keep everyone happy and still sound like Hatebreed at the end of the day. It’s a fine line to walk. Jamey has his ear to the street and manages the band and hosted Headbangers’ Ball for years, so we stay where we need to be with the band. A lot of our success has to do with the fact that we were around before all the downloading started to take place. We’re very lucky.

Does the album title The Concrete Confessional suggest the songs are of a more personal nature?

Jasta: Yeah. To have the juxtaposition between the two — something heavy and solid and hard versus something that’s an admission or sharing your shortcomings or anything that’s bothering you is something you can build on. If I sing about addiction or struggling with a destructive pattern in my life, I’m now 12 years removed from that.

A song like “Serve Your Masters” or “Remember When” have similar lyrical content but with new eyes.

It’s from today. I’m a year sober. On other albums, I was a totally different person. I needed to have that and have new territory as far as including some social issues that’s non-partisan.

Novinec: We try to get personal.

One of the things that people love about Hatebreed, especially in the metal community, is the positive lyrics.

A lot of the metal people who accept Hatebreed feel that they’re more at one with the band and can relate to

through health issues and needs to see a naturopath [doctor], which isn’t covered by her insurance. All you can do is start locally. As you get older, there’s this idea: When you’re young and into punk rock, you see things from a leftist side. When you get older, you start to see things from a more conservative point of view. I don’t believe that. When you boil this down to a binary system, it doesn’t work.

I needed to see it in a song in a way that’s not part of the divisive rhetoric you hear from politicians.

Novinec: Musically, it’s no secret that we’re Slayer friends. I think Jamie’s lyrics are good because he doesn’t get involved in politics. The song certainly isn’t anti-American.

We’re proud Americans, maybe more than most bands are. We just want to open people’s eyes up. Maybe you’re someone who doesn’t vote or care and maybe this song can get you involved in current affairs, especially if you’re a young kid and metal is all you care about. I was that kind of kid.

Any great memories of playing in Cleveland?

Jasta: Oh yeah. That’s part of the reason why we wanted to start the tour there. It’s a bit of a homecoming for Frank. Growing up, that was a big deal. If you could make it in big rock ’n’ roll metal towns like Cleveland and Chicago and Detroit and New York, that was a big deal. I remember opening for Sepultura at the Agora in 2000 when the audience started chanting “Hatebreed.” Of course, the Slayer shows and Soulfly and Slipknot. You know when you go to Cleveland, you’ll have a great show.

us because a lot of lyrics are uplifting and self-motivational. We hear that the lyrics help people get through difficult times. We try to be personable like that. Jamie does a good job with the lyrics.

The opening track and first single “A.D.” makes reference to the American Dream. What inspired the song?

Jasta: Just the fact that now that I’m 38 and I have seen America post the housing market crash and with my daughter being in high school, I’ve seen all the music programs and physical education classes cut.

and there were literally 600 people in line. Everyone who supported us at the small shows in Cleveland had driven out to Blossom to see us.

Novinec: I can sit here and tell everyone how great Cleveland is. You have the venues there. When you have music like ours where people tend to get rowdy — when you think about the Grog Shops and Euclid Taverns and the Peabody’s and the Agoras and the Odeon — you realize what a blessing it is. There are lots of great memories.

Pop singer Cyndi Lauper explores her rockabilly roots on new album

By Jeff Niesel POP SINGER CYNDI LAUPER started her career with the rockabilly band Blue Angel, so she’s well-versed in old-school country, the kind of country that had a rockabilly edge and would influence early rock ’n’ roll.

On her new album, Detour, she offers her take on a dozen classic country songs as she duets with singers such as Emmylou Harris (on the title track), Willie Nelson (“Night Life,” a song he wrote over 50 years ago), Vince Gill (Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty’s “You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly”) and Alison Krauss (Dolly Parton’s “Hard Candy Christmas”).

Pop and country singer Jewel also makes an appearance, showcasing her yodeling skills on “I Want to Be A Cowboy’s Sweetheart,” the first country song by a woman to sell one million copies.

“These covers and this time in country music is very closely linked to R&B, which is closely linked to the birth of rock ’n’ roll,” says Lauper during a recent conference call. “It’s the foundation of everything. When I was a kid, these songs were pop songs. Patsy Cline was on the radio and Loretta Lynn was on the radio.”

Lauper says she always wanted to work with Seymour Stein, one of the co-founders of Sire Records, who signed the Ramones, the Cramps and the Talking Heads. This provided the perfect opportunity, and the two came up with the concept for the album. Lauper recruited Tony Brown, a former member of the Stamps Quartet and backing musician for Emmylou Harris, to produce the disc.

“I decided on Tony Brown because he had good hair,” she says with a laugh. “I’m joking, but he also was Elvis’ piano player at one point and he worked with Emmylou Harris. He was a band player. He seemed more

applicable to what I wanted to do. I was looking for a partner to work with. This partnership seemed to be a good one. He wanted to bring new and old musicians together.

He wanted to include some of the Nashville cats and a guy from Muscle Shoals. It’s a singer’s album, and it makes you feel good. I put it on when I was working with other people and the mood changed in the room. They were kind of happy. This was an opportunity I had to do something I always wanted to do and work with someone that I always wanted to work with. To me, it’s exciting. It’s a great team. It’s a wonderful moment for me.”

“Wanda Jackson was one of the first female rockers,” she says when asked about what made her want to cover the track. “Her whole beginning, when she was singing in that voice they called the devil voice, was rock ’n’ roll. As you look up the history of your roots in music, you don’t find a lot of women. Wanda Jackson is right there, and she was there in the beginning. When she was singing like that, Elvis was singing like that. It would be hard for a woman to break through as a rocker like Elvis did. If a woman had been shaking her pelvis like that, they wouldn’t have wanted to see it on the camera. They would have called her a lot of names, which they did. She is a great rocker and a great symbol for us all.”

she makes her own, crooning, “you just can’t run from the funnel of love/ it’s bound to get you some day.” She delivers a well-placed yelp that recalls her vocal delivery in her classic pop tunes from the ’80s (think “Girls Just Want To Have Fun”).

Lauper’s new record is her eleventh overall. Over the decades, she’s explored many genres (and even had a smash hit musical with Kinky Boots, for which she wrote the music and lyrics), much to the chagrin of record label execs, who she says told

her she’d be “ruined” for embracing different styles of music and fashion.

“You have to be able to grow as an artist,” she says. “As you get older, you keep growing. I still take vocal lessons three days a week. I look at my life work as evolving. It’s always evolving.

Singers are athletes and if you don’t keep yourself in form, it will get more difficult to sing as you get older. If you have a guitar and don’t take good care of it, it won’t sound very good. This is the same.”

She says she’s developed her own definition of success that has more to do with making an artistic contribution than it has to do with album sales.

“At the end of the day, you want to add something,” she says. “You’re in the field of humanities. You want to contribute if you can. That’s always been my intention and I do the best I can. I can’t compare myself to the fricking greats. I can only try my best.

I wasn’t like Madonna and I wasn’t like Prince. My career never took off like Billy Joel. I had my own road. I just had to stay the course. You have to have hope and faith in yourself.”

BLENDED New Orleans Suspects combine the past with the future as a funky supergroup

IN 2009, A NEW BAND BEGAN TO form out of the osmotic New Orleans music scene. They gathered at the Maple Leaf Bar, a storied uptown venue that’s hosted some of the city’s most most legendary bands and musicians since the mid-70s.

The New Orleans Suspects — Mean Willie Green on drums, Reggie Scanlan on bass, Jake Eckert on lead guitar, CR Gruver on keys and Jeff Watkins on sax — grew out of a natural sense of chemistry and a love for the city’s musical traditions.

The band’s genesis was auspicious; the musicians’ chemistry was clear to anyone who was listening. And even though each guy was busy with his own work (their dossiers include years spent as members of the Radiators, the Neville Brothers, the Meters Experience, James Brown’s Band, and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band), they couldn’t deny the “aha” moments they found onstage together.

“We were playing New Orleans primarily whenever we happened to not be on the road at the same time,” Gruver tells Scene, adding that the band hadn’t yet become a full-time band in those early years, around 2009. “Anytime we had a chance to, we’d record a tune in the studio. We came up with a bunch of songs.”

The band assembled from its mighty collective knowledge two albums of covers and originals; but, still, they were chasing something.

The hypothesis hadn’t yet matured into a answer, a path forward.

“In those two years, the band morphed quite a bit,” Gruver says.

And so even when the second album landed in 2011, the musicians felt that

they had already moved beyond the material they had just released. They took to the stage at the Maple Leaf and recorded back-to-back shows to capture what they had become. Caught Live at the Maple Leaf indeed captures the band in their high-energy state of being in 2013.

Then the real party began.

In 2014, the band released Ouroboros, a dynamic album of original tunes that really brings the traditions of New Orleans music to the forefront of the city’s emerging hybridization.

“Ouroboros was really kind of us putting our foot forward as an original band, saying, ‘Here’s who we really are,’” Gruver says. “We really dove deeply into New Orleans rhythms — from New Orleans funk and Mardi Gras Indian rhythms to some of the R&B and old dirge feel from a secondline jazz funeral and wrapped some horn lines around that. We really embraced New Orleans’ heritage.”

Most recently, the band returned

that they added in a lot of the new material. (Scanlan, by the way, isn’t touring with the band these days; Charlie Wooten is playing bass on the road.)

With a tour unfolding now, the band’s sights remained set on the future. Their new album, Kaleidoscoped, will drop in late summer, and the band promises even more expansion and examination of their roles as musicians from the country’s most dynamic and curious musical city. The name, of course, is a clear riff on the variety of moods and roots intertwined among the songs.

“We really started stretching ourselves musically and exploring different things,” Gruver says. “For myself, I’ve been so immersed and influenced by the zydeco culture that a zydeco song kinda came out of that.

And I was drawing on my older roots in funk music on some of the tunes.

for their fifth year at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, a muchbeloved celebration of the city’s musical legacy, which, this year, found itself on the wrong end of that region’s bad weather. Thankfully for the Suspects, they landed on the first weekend’s bill and managed to avoid the wildly heavy rains. “It was probably our best turnout of five years playing fairgrounds,” Gruver says, adding

all over the place as far as stylistically and where the influences come in.”

Guests show up across the album’s tunes — including Little Feat’s Paul Barrere, whose friendship with the band members blossomed into a terrific working relationship. He brought along an old song from a side project, and the Suspects happily laid it into their budding musical collage on Kaleidoscoped.

“It’s that kind of vibe where we have these relationships with these guys that have become something bigger than just a random sit-in,” Gruver says.

And that’s it: The Suspects’ overall ethos reflects the communal spirit of New Orleans.

“It’s something that I think the musicians in this city are drawn to,” Gruver says, “and something that we not only are drawn to as the New Orleans Suspects — we also kind of rely heavily on it. It’s a kind of party atmosphere. There’s something about the music — not just the rhythms, but also lyrically and the things we talk about down here — that’s just about the party that we’re having.

Food. Mardi Gras. It’s a culture that’s gotten so good at celebrating life, and it’s almost because there’s so much danger here between the floods and the hurricanes and even just the crime. It’s almost like the culture — in my mind — has embraced its mortality and celebrates its life.

“What really comes out of the music and the dancing and the parades is this revelry. We’re having a great time. That’s what we find we’re bringing to the city. And I think that’s what draws people to not just the city, but to the music. When we come to Ohio or wherever we might be, they don’t have that culture around them.

And they get a taste of it for a night or a couple hours. They can immerse themselves with us in that, and we find that people really react.”

By Jeff Niesel MEET THE BAND: David Curtis (vocals, guitar) A CLASSIC ROCK CASE: A Cleveland native, Curtis grew up in a musical household. “Classic rock was ingrained in me,” he says. “My parents bought me a miniature acoustic guitar for Christmas when I was 4. It’s been a passion and obsession.” In his early teens, he started composing and arranging his own songs.

THE EP’S THE THING: Two years ago, he released his debut, It Is What It Is, an album of pop rock and alternative tunes. For his latest album, Secret Rendezvous, he went to Mad Rabbit Studios in Uniontown. “It was awesome,” he says of the recording experience. “It was overwhelming.”

He did pre-production in the studio with his band and then continued writing more songs while in the studio. “These five songs tell a

story,” he says, adding that playing in faraway places such as Turkey and Tokyo inspired the album. He even filmed the music video for the EP’s first song, “Girl You Got It” in Hong Kong. “These songs are all about traveling the world, but I haven’t done it with someone yet.

It’s like I’ve been traveling with a ghost.”

WHY YOU SHOULD HEAR HIM: “Girl You Got It,” a song based on an expression that his grandfather used, features an infectious guitar riff as Curtis adopts a soulful falsetto, whispering, “you got it/ you got it/girl, you got it.” He wrote the song while thinking about his grandfather. “I tend to write a lot of songs on acoustic [guitar] because you can hear each note in its true form,” he says. “You can turn an acoustic song into a rock song or a metal song or anything. I always write the melody first; it will wake

Dear Dan, I’m one of those bi guys. I had trouble dating girls in high school and at 18 found guys so much darn easier. And as sexual promiscuity in the gay world goes, I got around there easily. Fast-forward a few years.

I’m in college now and desiring women and stability more. But women find me weird and awkward — I admit I am — something I was never judged for in the gay world. This has been going on for a few years now, and it just gets worse when I’m supposed to be parading around presenting as a horny straight guy.

I’d love to find a bisexual woman to start a family with who is up for mutually agreed upon swing-and-fun sessions with others.

But from what I’ve experienced with girls so far — always on the watch for a “player,” zero understanding of male bisexuality — that seems far from possible. Lately I’ve just been sitting on my hands in social situations, afraid to even interact with women. Is this therapy worthy?

Women have a lot more to fear than men do, UPITT, and a weird-and-awkward first impression is far likelier to turn off a woman into dudes than it is to turn off a man into dudes. The man you flirt with at a party might think, “Dude’s weird and awkward but he’s hot,” and jump into bed with you. But the woman you flirt with at a party is likely to think, “Dude’s weird and awkward and he’s hot, but he’s just too weird to risk it.”

Something else that couldn’t hurt: getting on a site like OkCupid and approaching bisexual women there. You may have better luck with women if your initial interactions are over email.

And finally, UPITT, there are gay and bi men out there who desire stability, too — and stability and “promiscuity” aren’t mutually exclusive.

Dear Dan, About your answer to WHAT, the lady whose boyfriend “accidentally” ass-fucked her. I am a queer lady with a number of men in my sexual history, and I have many straight women friends who get around. “I didn’t mean to stick my dick in your ass” is a

lie that men tell — men who are embarrassed to ask for anal, men who want it so bad they’re prepared to hurt their partner, or men who think their partner will say no if asked and just don’t care. In all cases, these are men who do not even begin to understand how anal sex works. As you say, it’s not an accident.
