UPFRONT CLEVELAND HEIGHTS ANNOUNCES NEW, DUMB CITY BRANDING SLOGAN; SUBSEQUENTLY ANNOUNCES IT’S SCRAPPING IT AFTER BACKLASH CLEVELAND HEIGHTS LAST WEEK unveiled a new slogan crafted for the city by Align2Market, one of the many companies that now help cities create rebranding efforts, and it lasted three whole days before a vociferous backlash from residents caused the city to announce it was dumping the slogan in a trash can, or, more appropriately for that fine ’burb, on the tree lawn.

Anyway, the short-lived slogan was: Cleveland Heights: We Choose This.

We choose what?

This?

Huh? In the landscape of safe, vanilla and otherwise forgettable suburban slogans — including design and other visual branding services for which Northeast Ohio cities are forking over from $10,000 to $100,000, and such insightful chestnuts as “Come Together and Thrive” (South Euclid) and “A Community of Neighbors” (Lyndhurst) — it’s hard to pull off a clunker to the degree that it seemingly upsets almost everyone in the city, but Cleveland Heights appears to have scored a perfect 10.0 on this challenging maneuver.

The reaction, beyond general confusion as to what the slogan even means if you try to mine it for subtle notes of positivity, was that there’s a distinct and almost explicit negative connotation: Hey, Cleveland Heights isn’t great, but we choose to be here and we’re dealing with it. Love it or leave it!

In Scene’s reporting last month on the purposes and unclear effects of suburban branding, Cleveland Heights vice mayor Melissa Yasinow said that she was confident that their branding efforts will eventually yield results. She said she believes the city branding efforts will enable the city’s messaging to “reflect what matters to the community to make sure we are clearly and accurately representing Cleveland Heights.”

Yasinow also said that she believes that the outcome of the branding effort will be a “better understanding

of what Cleveland Heights is and why people should call Cleveland Heights home.”

And ... that’s not what happened.

If you look at the full presentation from Align2Market, including field notes, survey results and input from community members, there’s a very clear picture of what Cleveland Heights means to those who live and work in Cleveland Heights.

Overwhelmingly, the most important values expressed were the city’s diversity, creativity, arts and culture and its progressive soul. On the other side, concerns included taxes, crime and public education.

The reconciliation of those comments came in two sentences in the PDF, and it’s unclear whether they were written by the company itself or pulled from direct quotes from residents, though it’s a safe bet that it’s the former.

“The ‘sense of home’ is so strong that deficiencies are overlooked or ignored.”

And ...

“It’s not for everyone, but for some it’s the only one.”

Which, again, works generically as a whole, but grabbing the walkoff line/conclusion without the rest simply doesn’t work.

By Friday afternoon of last week, an email went out notifying residents of the quick backtracking efforts.

“Thank you to all of the Cleveland Heights residents who took the time to take the brand logo survey and to share your comments and suggestions. From the very beginning of this effort, the City and the Brand Steering Committee sought community input, analyzed it and incorporated residents’ feedback every step of the way,” the email read. “Seeking your opinions on new creative concepts is also part of the process. And, we heard clearly that people have an affinity towards our current logo. We also heard your thoughts about the proposed tagline and we took that to heart and have eliminated it as an option. We do expect to further address a tagline for the City in the future.”

UPFRONT Bernie Moreno Launches CHAMPtitle in Bid to Disrupt Auto Titling Auto dealer-turned-techentrepreneur Bernie Moreno and business partner Shane Bigelow announced Friday that the technology undergirding their new digital auto titling startup, CHAMPtitle, is “good to go.”

Under the umbrella of Ownum, a tech incubator-slash-laboratory conceived by Moreno and Bigelow to “unlock business growth and make government more efficient,” CHAMPtitle will be sold to U.S. states (and potentially foreign governments) in the hopes of radically streamlining the car titling process. Moreno testified from personal experience that the current paper-based system can be cumbersome and risky for consumers, dealers, manufacturers, and insurance companies.

Moreno called car titling an “elegant and simple” application of blockchain technology, one that was

“completely and utterly different” from the world of cryptocurrencies and token sales. He said he considered Ownum and the multiple projects it will ultimately pursue as concrete examples of what the local Blockland initiative is trying to accomplish: promoting and expanding tech entrepreneurship in Cleveland.

“I sold my successful dealerships to start a tech company out of a garage,” Moreno said at a Mercedes dealership on Brookpark Road, where the press conference was held last week. “It’s a nice garage, but still ... . We’re building a tech team right here in Cleveland. We’ve got to eat our own dog food.”

Moreno analogized CHAMPtitle’s impact to that of digital boarding passes on air travel, and said that he’s confident state bureaucracies, which tend to move slowly, would be attracted to the CHAMPtitle software — after a robust and transparent RFP process — because they’d instantly see a cost savings.

Ownum’s chief solutions officer is Randy Cole, who was hired earlier this year after serving as executive director of the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission. Moreno said that under Cole’s guidance, the goal is to have CHAMPtitle operating

in a “handful” of states by as early as the fall, and to be working in as many as a dozen states one year from now.

Bigelow outlined the technology in broad strokes and said that unlike “electronic” titling, which merely puts paper records on a computer screen, a fully digital system (built on private blockchains) means that car titles, and relevant information about a vehicle and its ownership history, would be instantly available on mobile devices.

While Ownum will begin developing a suite of related applications in the near future — a company called Vital Chain to streamline birth and death certificates; a company called Digi Tags to track transferable tax credits — Ownum is still in the “pre-revenue” phase, and the local team of 15 has been “working ’round the clock,” according to Moreno, to build out CHAMPtitle in the hopes of generating cash flow for longer term projects. — Sam Allard

Cleveland Unveils Pitch for ‘Opportunity Zone’ Projects If you, like almost all of us, have unrealized capital gains sitting

around, boy howdy does Cleveland want you to do business in one of the area’s Opportunity Zones.

A coalition including the Cuyahoga County Land Bank, the city of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, the Greater Cleveland Partnership, the Fund for Our Economic Future and others last week unveiled Opportunity CLE, a program that aims to attract development in federally approved census tracts where investors with unrealized capital gains can get tax breaks, and even eliminate all taxes, on that money.

In Northeast Ohio, the majority of those tracts are in the city proper — including noted high-poverty areas that can’t seem to attract development, like Tremont and downtown — but also include sites in Euclid, Bedford Heights and other surrounding suburbs.

These coveted tax havens across the country, approved in the 2017 tax bill, hope to spur investment and development in areas with at least 20-percent poverty levels. The fear, of course, is that they’ll serve as displacement and gentrification accelerators in already developing areas.

Brad Whitehead of the Fund for Our Economic Future told Crain’s Cleveland. “Pretty much everyone is trying to figure out what to do about Opportunity Zones.”

Which begat Opportunity CLE, which has its own website for prospective investors and developers, complete with a Warren Buffet quote right up top.

GCP honcho Joe Roman was overcome with optimism. In a statement he said, “The floodgates are about to open regarding investment in opportunity zones, and we are gearing up to aggressively compete for investments in Cuyahoga County projects. This program has the potential to raise hundreds of millions of dollars in catalytic urban development opportunities here, stimulating growth and job creation in Cleveland and surrounding communities.”

Policy Matters Ohio cautioned last year that the tax incentive might enhance poor communities, but unless the program is implemented carefully, it could also increase inequality.

“The effect on low-income residents of Opportunity Zones is less clear,” the think tank wrote in a report. “Tax

Pricey new residential development could force rents up and drive some low-income residents out of their neighborhoods. Cuts to food aid and health care that federal legislators are considering to pay for last year’s tax overhaul (including the Opportunity Zone program) would hurt low-income families. Reporting requirements, transparency, local oversight and enforceable community benefit agreements should be an essential part of the program to ensure residents are helped and not harmed.”

“One of the great fears, nationally, is that this is the National Gentrification Fund,” Whitehead told the Plain Dealer last week. “That’s why it’s imperative that we come together and make sure that good deals get lifted up.”

Locally, lip service is at least being paid to that concern, with leaders saying they want to attract projects that create jobs, affordable housing, etc.

Last year, Whitehead told Scene there are a number of strategies that economic development organizations can pursue, including identifying investors across the country “who are applying a social lens” to their investments, “utilizing measurement mechanisms to score investments on their social impact,” and leveraging philanthropic dollars to “structure deals that make sense both financially and socially.”

To date, only one planned project has been announced that specifically cited the Opportunity Zone credit as a linchpin, that being The Tappan, a proposed mixed-use “mixed income” development in Tremont.

As the PD reported said earlier this year, “Adding an interesting twist to the project is the developer’s leveraging of opportunity-zone funding to subsidize what it is calling workforce housing. SCA plans to set aside 60 percent of the residential units for people whose annual income is $46,000 or less. Monthly rent for the mix of studio or one-bedroom units will be between $1,000 and $1,200.”

Stark Enterprises, which is hoping to finally break ground on the nuCLEus development across from Quicken Loans Arena this summer, considered the Opportunity Zone designation a “cherry on top” of their current capital stack that will improve slim projected profit margins for investors. — Grzegorek

Prognosticating the ins and outs of the 2019 Cleveland Indians, D ¿ QH EDVHEDOO WHDP

THIS IS GOING TO BE A STRANGE SEASON. Hell, it’s already been a strange season and it hasn’t started yet.

Never before have expectations been as high for a team whose fan base is so angry. Like last year, the Cleveland Indians are expected to cruise to another American League Central title. (Who doesn’t love AL Central Division title flag-raising ceremonies, right?)

Should they do it, it will be their fourth in a row, a run of division dominance that hasn’t been seen in this town since the 1990s. You remember Cleveland baseball in the ’90s, right? The Tribe would run virtually unopposed in the Central, year in and year out, with fans coming out in droves to watch them waltz their way to another postseason.

Sound familiar? It’s the same as it is today, only with less excitement, more empty seats and a more frustrated fan base.

Why less excitement? This one’s simple: The team isn’t as good. Why frustrated? Because the front office seemed to take a pass at improving the team the last two off-seasons, likely because they know they’re still the best team in the division. That winning the Central is as much of a sure thing as it was in, say, 1995, isn’t a testament to how good this Indians team is. It’s a signal that the division is somehow worse than it was two decades ago. And that’s saying something. Those ’90s Tribe teams were as good as any team that’s won a championship in the years since (and better than most) and took pride in just bludgeoning each of their punk-ass division rivals 18 times a year.

It’s a strange time for Major League Baseball, where the Indians are rightly or wrongly lopped in with a huge swath of teams in the league who don’t seem particularly motivated to spend money to

improve the team. The chasm between the competitive teams and the dregs has never been more severe, and the number of divisions that, even before the first pitch of the season is thrown, are seemingly locked up has never been higher.

So, yeah, the Indians are fine. The expectations are the playoffs. But what then? A team built largely to play against itself isn’t built to compete against the Astros, Yankees and Red Sox. Paul Dolan has almost explicitly admitted this in his various spring training interviews, which are filled with aw-shucks, “I’m a common man just like you” moments, like the admission that he flies Southwest. As players like Manny Machado, Mike Trout and Bryce Harper sign long-term contracts in the multiple hundreds of millions, Dolan is out here already warning fans to enjoy Francisco Lindor while they can before he hops into free agency in a few years. Because “the day we [hand out a $300 million contract] is when somebody else is doing $1 billion deals.”

It’s a familiar refrain ’round these parts, but with the best pitching staff in baseball and two generational talents coming into their prime, fiscal responsibility isn’t exactly the conversation Indians fans want to be having. But here we are, at the tail end of a World Series window when the team is cutting payroll and the equipment truck is picking up any former high-school baseball player wandering around truck stops in the heartland of America, en route to and from Arizona, in the hopes of bolstering a roster that makes you choke on your ballpark dog.

So while the Indians of 2019 have the same air of inevitability about them as those of recent years, it’s hard to get jazzed.

So let’s make it interesting, shall we? Just about

every MLB pundit, forecaster and prognosticator is picking the Indians to coast to another A.L. Central title, despite gains made by some of their intradivision rivals (namely, the Minnesota Twins). Let’s assume, for the sake of argument, that they’re right.

The easiest way to spice things up is to lay some money on the type of side bets that keep us watching when an outcome feels inevitable. Here are some prop bets, including completely accurate and not-at-allmade-up odds (we ain’t Vegas), that will require you to plumb the depths of your Tribe-loving soul and keep an eye trained on our national pastime while you count the days until you can finally see how Odell Beckham Jr. looks in orange and brown.

The Indians will win the American League Central by over/under 10 games.

Over: EVEN; Under: EVEN Prediction: Last year, a mostly underwhelming Indians team took the American League’s weakest division by 13 games. No other division winner in baseball coasted as easily, or as long, as the Tribe.

Since then, the Minnesota Twins and the Chicago White Sox have gotten better while the Indians … have not. At the best, the Indians enter the season in full-on treading-water mode. At worst, they’re headed for a pennant race. After their depressing showing in the division series last year, maybe that’s not a bad thing.

The Indians will use over/under 24 relief pitchers in 2019.

FEATURE what any club with one of the five worst bullpens in the league would do: They let their two best relievers walk, “best” being a relative term for two guys who weren’t actually very good, and took no meaningful steps to replace them.

Of course, relief pitchers are mercurial beings who can go from terrible to unhittable in the course of one year.

Last year, the Indians used 24 pitchers in hopes of finding more of the latter.

This year looks to be marginally better, maybe, perhaps. It’s a good thing they got their outfield problems settled ...

Over: +800; Under: -1000 Prediction: Of course they won’t use 24 outfielders this year. But it’s very possible they might use, say, 12.

When the Indians head north, they’ll have more questions than answers in the outfield and, with the departure of Michael Brantley, no real anchor.

Leonys Martin, who hasn’t played in a regular season game since he almost died from a bacterial infection late last season, seems to be the closest thing to a lock as the starting center fielder. After Martin, it’s pretty much name salad in the race for left field, right field and fourth outfielder. Will Greg Allen be able to hold down one of the corner spots, or will he need a platoon partner like Tyler Naquin?

Does Carlos Gonzalez have anything left in the tank? Can Bradley Zimmer stay healthy for two weeks? Prediction: The good news is that early forecasts for the Wednesday, April 3, afternoon game predict temperatures in the low 50s with no rain. The bad news is that literally nobody goes to Game 2. Ever. Great seats, as will likely be the case for most of the season, are still available.

The Indians won’t sell out a single regular-season game after Opening Day. Yes: -175; No: +155 Prediction: If it does happen, it will be the Friday, June 7, combination Sugardale Dollar Dog/ fireworks night game against the Yankees. Also, this will be the single worst night at Progressive Field this season.

The Indians will average over/ under 25,000 per game this season.

Over: +600; Under: -750 Prediction: The Indians averaged just under 23,000 last year. In 2017 — the season that followed a World Series appearance — they averaged a hair over 25,000. It was the only time when they finished north of 25,000 since 2008. Now, let’s think about this for a minute: Historically, save for a few glorious seasons in the 1990s, April and May attendance at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario has been abysmal. There’s no reason to assume that changes this year.

What has changed is that there’s palpable excitement surrounding the Cleveland Browns for the first time in two decades. And with training camp starting in July, that should be terrifying for the Tribe front office.

Trevor Bauer will hold a press conference to apologize for something he tweeted by July.

Yes: +500; No: -450 Prediction: It’s not that Trevor Bauer won’t say something that he should apologize for, it’s that he’s going to be loath to apologize. Factor in the safe bet that at some point the team will kindly and privately ask Bauer to stay the fuck off social media, and it’s unlikely that the mercurial, opinionated pitcher will be saying sorry to anyone anytime soon.

On the other hand, it’s entirely possible that near the end of the season Trevor tells beat reporters that Cy Young voters shouldn’t care about (insert whatever asinine conspiracy theory he defended on Twitter) and focus on his on-ďŹ eld performance when evaluating the award.

The Indians will actually make a legitimate trade-deadline move to improve the team.

Yes: EVEN; No: EVEN Prediction: They’re going to do something. They could, in a world in which they’re safely atop the Central with no worries about the Twins nipping at their heels, take another look at moving Kluber or Bauer given their starting rotation depth and absolute lack of depth almost everywhere else. (The same could be said if things fall to shit and they go into sell-off mode but deďŹ nitely billed as anything other than that.)

By the All Star Break, there will be a strong argument that Corey Kluber is the third-best pitcher in the rotation.

Yes: -200; No: +350 Prediction: Barring injury, Trevor Bauer will quickly and for the duration of the season lay claim to the top spot in the rotation. That much doesn’t exactly qualify as a shocking forecast.

The question is whether Carlos Carrasco can not only continue to be the Cookie we know and love but show why the Indians inked him to an offseason contract extenstion.

Kluber will likely be quietly great, but there are a couple of reasons to think less so than in previous years. The team could and should take historical evidence of late-season fatigue and injuries into consideration in his usage, meaning more five- and six-inning outings, and one can’t help but wonder what an entire off season of trade rumors does to him as he’s watched almost all of his pals leave the clubhouse.

Prediction: For the sake of the $4.5 million the team is spending on him this year, instead of spending it literally anywhere else after injury-riddled seasons from the right-hander, you hope so.

The Indians will host more than one home playoff game this year.

Yes: EVEN; No: EVEN Prediction: It’s probable that the Indians won’t have the best or secondbest record among the division winners.

Just don’t get swept, one could argue, and you’ll see at least two home games and the resultant inux of cash into a team that is going to be desperate for it after what will likely be a below-average attendance season. Of course, we know how last year went, and if the bats go silent again, Tribe fans could easily walk into Progressive Field just once this post-season, and honestly, there’s little reason to believe it’ll be any more than that.

Today at 11 a.m., CatVideoFest comes to the Cedar Lee Theater in Cleveland Heights, bringing the

biggest (furry) internet sensations to the big screen. CatVideoFest, which roams around the country helping to raise money for cats in need while partnering up with local charities, features a 70-minute compilation of the latest and greatest family-friendly cat videos. Emmanuel Culcasi Organist Emmanuel Culcasi began his musical studies at age 6 in Aix-en-Provence and Marseille, and after winning numerous prizes at international piano competitions, he entered the organ class of the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique (CNSMD) of Lyon.

Trained as a musician and a scientist, Culcasi functions as a recitalist, collaborative scientist and educator. The Monster Drawing Rally returns to SPACES Gallery

FOR THE NINTH YEAR IN A row now, SPACES has herded up yet another 100 artists to participate in the Monster Drawing Rally. The institution offers an opportunity for the public to witness the magic happen from pen to paper — or other materials and supports — by artists from the region. It’s something that usually happens within the inner studio sanctum, and it’s exciting to witness in person.

The artists are divided into three groups, with each having an hour to create one or more artworks which will then be available for sale.

We asked a few of them about their participation.

Are you a returning artist?

Cynthia Penter: Although I’ve been involved for years as an event photographer for SPACES, this is my first time participating in MDR. It’s always a thrilling opportunity that contributes to a deeply worthy cause, hailing back to SPACES genesis as an artist-driven gallery offering an outlet for all of this intense creative energy in Cleveland. And the event parallels the values I hold about the place of art in relationship to community.

Barbara Chira: Returning artist?

Yes, but it has taken me a couple of years due to a knee replacement!

This will be my first time in the new space, and I’m very excited.

Tyler Zeleny: Yes, I’ve participated in every MDR either as an intern (the very first year) or as an artist. Even when I was in grad school in NJ, I would make the drive in to participate.

Tim Herron: To help out SPACES and the benefit shows are the only time my work gets to hang on its walls.

Diane Fleisch-Hughes: I am a returning artist, however it has been years since I have participated and that is because it always fell on a day when I had something already scheduled. I am excited to be back. I wanted to participate again because I love seeing the spontaneous art that is created by all these incredible local artists. Usually we get to see their art on gallery walls but here we get to see the work being produced. It is a challenge to create art on the spot

and it is motivating when you see what others are doing.

What is your medium?

Penter: I am primarily a media artist so I hadn’t thought about coming in as a drawer, but I recently rediscovered some drawings and paintings I had done in art school, before I went over to the film side, and remembered how much I like to draw.

I mainly do video installations, film and photography. There may be some photo showing up in what I create at the rally.

Chira: At this point in my career, I’m a socially engaged practice artist, so my media are people, interaction or collaboration and being responsive to community needs.

and after talking so much about western codex, alternative codex, I’m thinking of making a short artist book. But I might as easily decide to spontaneously draw a portrait that night.

Chira: At this time my concept is adorable and adoring monsters.

It may include collage drawing and/ or soft sculpture, but my plan is to come prepared with pieces and parts, and manage a creative assembly line in situ, maybe with hands-on participation from the audience.

We’ll see what happens! How many monsters can we bring to life?

Zeleny: I plan on spending time the week before prepping an idea.

Herron: It has been Conte and pastels, but I will do oils this time.

What will you be creating during your hour-long shift?

Penter: I’ve been teaching a class in contemporary media this semester

the moment but is based on items I’ve made in advance. I tend to only make one or two pieces. MDR for me tends to be an opportunity to practice some formal exercise as opposed to advancing a heavily conceptual piece.

Fleisch-Hughes: The piece for MDR will definitely be organic and spontaneous. I plan on bringing all sorts of materials and we will just see what happens.

Herron: This year I plan on doing a small painting of spaces. Because we only get an hour to work I will arrive with it already prepped so I can get it finished on time.

Which of your peers are you looking forward to watching as they work?

Penter: I’m looking forward to watching Eranah Adorjan, Catherine Butler, Dina Heoynck, Bellamy Printz, Sarah Curry, Bridget Ginley, Susie Underwood and Meng Hsuan Wu. Chira: I’m really excited to see what my colleagues at CIA will be doing, such as Poppy Lyttle and Samie Konet — and the alumni, too, such as Barbara Bachtell, Seqouia Bostick, Kristen Cliffel, Rebekah Wilhelm and the rest of the gang. I know I’m going to have to up my monster game with such artists as PJ Haliwill, Angela Oster, Justin Brennan and Buzz Szilangyi participating!

Zeleny: Every year there are new and different participants, so I come in with little expectation. I might encounter an artist I’ve never met before and love what they do.

Fleisch-Hughes: I’m looking forward to seeing Sarah Curry, Justin Brennan, Tyler Zeleny — really everyone.

HERRON: All of them.

MOVIES BAD TIMES AT THE TAJ Hotel Mumbai is a terrifying recreation of the 2008 attack

ON NOVEMBER 26, 2008, 10 Pakistanis from the militant Islamist organization Lakshar-e-Taiba executed a series of coordinated attacks across the city of Mumbai, India. These attacks, which generated worldwide attention and horror, resulted in nearly 200 deaths and more than 300 wounded.

Of the multiple attack sites, the most prolonged and ruthless assault was at the Taj Hotel, a five-star luxury palace on Mumbai’s southern tip. Multiple gunmen infiltrated the hotel and began systematically gunning down guests and staff. They had designs to capture high-rolling hostages and to execute prominent guests “with the world watching.”

The new film Hotel Mumbai, which opens Friday at area theaters, chronicles this attack from the perspective of the terrorists themselves, and from the staff and guests enduring the violence.

Starring Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Jason Isaacs, Nazanin Boniadi and Anupam Kher, the film is a gripping and brutally violent recreation of events.

Like other disaster movies, the film introduces its ensemble cast with swift and easy exposition. Dev Patel is Arjun, a hard-working Sikh waiter at the hotel who’s late for work on the day of the attacks because he has to drop off his young daughter

with his wife. The head chef, Oberoi (Kher), is a strict taskmaster intent on preserving the hotel’s reputation, but he is not without humanity. When Arjun admits that he lost his black shoes en route to work and begs that he be allowed to keep his shift, Oberoi alerts him to an extra pair in his office.

Hammer and Boniadi are guests David and Zhara, a wealthy couple with notable family connections in India who are traveling with their au pair (Tilda Cobham-Hervey) and infant. Jason Isaacs is Vasili, a former Soviet spy who’s now a boorish and idiosyncratic guest. “Does the tall one have big nipples or little nipples?” he inquires at the hotel restaurant, of the consort he’s ordering for the evening.

When the gunmen enter the hotel lobby, they do so alongside a horde of frenzied people running from violence elsewhere in the city. A bloodbath ensues: automatic weapons picking off guests one by one at close range.

The staff, then, many of whom have worked at the Taj for decades, stay on to protect the guests. In an emotional moment that sticks with me, a receptionist tries to remain quiet and calm as she calls individual rooms, advising guests not to open their doors.

While the woefully ill-equipped Mumbai police decide how to respond to the attack, the tension inside

the hotel mounts. A central drama involves David and Zhara, who try desperately to rescue their baby as the gunmen move from floor to floor.

The terrorists are mostly cardboard-cutout jihadists, though at least one is portrayed as conflicted about the havoc they are wreaking in Allah’s name. In one scene, that gunmen (Amandeep Singh) refuses to touch the breast of a woman he has just slaughtered to check for her passport. Murdering her? No problem.

But touching her breast? A bridge too far.

Rookie director Anthony Maras has effectively transposed a complex

and elegant physical space to the big screen. Viewers gain an intimate knowledge of the hotel’s layout: from its vast marble lobby to its individual guest rooms to its kitchens and stairwells to its secret sixth-floor lounge, where Arjun and the staff herd survivors for temporary safety.

There are moments when the film comes awfully close to Die Hard, and yet the reality of the unfolding horror means that appreciation for Hotel Mumbai comes down to its technical, almost documentary, achievements.

SPOTLIGHT: THE MUSTANG “I’M NOT GOOD WITH PEOPLE,” says Roman (Matthias Schoenaerts), a convict in a rural Nevada prison who’s required to participate in an “outdoor maintenance” program as part of his state-mandated social rehabilitation.

That proves to be an understatement. The man barely speaks to fellow inmates and appears constantly pissed off. He regularly winds up in solitary confinement on account of his behavior.

As the central character in The Mustang, a compelling new drama by first-time director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, Roman struggles to deal with his violent past.

Working with horses proves to be

particularly useful.

Though much of the movie shows the harsh realities of life in prison, the film also advocates for some semblance of redemption. A hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it premiered in January, the movie opens on Friday at the Cedar Lee Theatre.

Roman first lands a gig shoveling manure, but a veteran trainer (Bruce Dern) and a fellow convict (Jason Mitchell) help him get into the outdoor program’s selective wild horse training section. As part of that program, prisoners rehabilitate wild mustangs, so they can be sold at auction.

Roman gets assigned to one particularly wild horse that, like him, has been sent to isolation for its violent

and anti-social behavior. Taming the steed proves to be extremely difficult.

Roman and the horse get into a skirmish, and Roman winds up back in solitary confinement after he hits the horse.

As a result of his cooperation during a thunderstorm, Roman gets reinstated as a horse trainer. He has a mere four weeks to try to get the animal ready for auction, a daunting task given the creature’s unruly behavior.

Schoenaerts gives an exceptional performance as a quick-tempered, introverted convict who has to learn to tame his inner demons and come to terms with the way his horrible crime has devastated his daughter’s life, and

the scenes with the horses are really remarkable simply because of the amount of training it must’ve taken to get horses and actors to work so well together.

Based on a real-life program that pairs prisoners with wild mustangs, the film ultimately makes the case that the program provides hope for both humans and horses. Stick around for the credits to see some snapshots of real-life criminals with the horses they’ve trained.

MORE THAN A FEW YEARS BACK, my wife and I found ourselves in Miami for the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. Following the suggestion of some industry friends, we landed at the door of Michael’s Genuine for dinner. Located in the Design District, a manufactured retail neighborhood home to such luxe brands as Cartier, Gucci and Versace, the restaurant felt like an unpretentious oasis in an otherwise hostile landscape.

That’s good news for Clevelanders because Michael Schwartz, the James Beard Award-wining chef and owner of that 12-year-old bistro, is in the process of importing that concept to Shaker. When it opens on April 8, the restaurant will be the only one in existence outside of the Miami flagship. That’s not to say that Schwartz has been sitting on his hands. Under the Genuine Hospitality umbrella are a handful of one-offs sprinkled throughout South Florida along with a growing chain of pizzerias. Cleveland was on the receiving end of one of those pizza shops, in fact, until the chef called an audible.

“When we signed the lease it was originally supposed to be for our Genuine Pizza expansion,” Schwartz explains. “But what we saw happening here convinced us to broaden the offerings and not just limit ourselves to pizza.”

Here, of course, is Van Aken District, “Shaker’s new downtown.”

Already the Market Hall is abuzz with local food and drink concepts like Banter, On the Rise, Scorpacciata Pasta, Rising Star Coffee and Craft Collective. Columbus-based Brassica opens for business on April 12. Outside the hall proper, Mitchell’s Homemade Ice Cream occupies a sweet perch steps from the park and Jonathon Sawyer will claim a different prominent spot for his untitled next act.

When asked how he’ll duplicate the easy-going but vibrant personality of the original here in Shaker, the chef points out key elements in the 65seat room, which is rapidly coming together.

“For us, it’s the bar and open

kitchen,” he says. “But it’s as much about the intention as it is about the design. As a chef I often say, it’s not about the food. The food has to be good, but it’s all about the experience: how you are made to feel, what you are seeing, what you are smelling. I think what people resonate with in Miami is that it isn’t this high-design restaurant, even though it’s in the Design District.”

Schwartz and company have a knack for turning simple into special and exacting into effortless. Daily rounds of the farmers markets, fishmongers and small family farms turn into the menu of the day, a seasonal expression of an otherwise fixed roster of dishes. From an open kitchen equipped with a wood-burning oven come thin-crust pizzas, sure, but also blistered eggplant with harissa, dill and lemon, charred octopus with smoked chiles and crema, crispskinned cobia with a Moroccan herb sauce, and dinners for two built around sizzling steaks and whole chickens.

Michael’s operates off a flexible menu that caters equally well to happy-hour nibblers, dinner-date duos and large group gourmets. Meals

invariably begin with raw bar items like oysters, shrimp, ceviche and crudo. Before the main course arrives, snack on small plates like a springy burrata with peas and mint, a savory shrimp toast “banh mi,” and a rustic pate with all of the accoutrements.

Not-going-anywhere classics like thick-sliced potato chips and dip, deviled eggs and crispy hominy will make the move, as will a stable of sunny salads, lusty housemade pastas and a cheeseburger capped with house-smoked bacon.

To run the shop, Schwartz nabbed GM Katie Syracopoulos, who spent years watching over Chicago’s revered Publican, and chef Vinnie Cimino, most recently of Trentina and Greenhouse Tavern. Owner and chef have crossed paths numerous times at culinary events, and the more they explored the union, the more it seemed like an ideal fit.

“When [director of culinary] Brad [Herron] and I started to talk to Vinnie about the project and about food, we would look at each other and say, ‘Yes, thank god!,’” says Schwartz.

“When you talk to cooks and chefs these days, there are all kinds of styles and approaches to food. But

the things that Vinnie valued about simplicity and ingredient-driven and artisan, those are the things that are important to us.”

Cimino spent weeks in Florida working at various Genuine Hospitality restaurants to get to know the players, learn the recipes, techniques and cuisine, and generally soak up the corporate principles.

“I was mostly engrossing myself in the culture,” notes Cimino. “What is Michael’s Genuine, why does it work so well in Miami, how do we translate that culture of hospitality and bring it back to Cleveland.”

In Miami, Schwartz is a wellknown commodity. But up to now, his reputation largely has been confined to the 305 area code. Will diners in the 216 beat a path to the door of an unfamiliar chef?

“I have a good reputation in Miami, but opening this restaurant is less about me coming to Shaker and more about what the brand represents and embracing people like Vinnie and Katie and the community.”

BY NOW, CLEVELANDERS ARE pretty well versed in Vietnamese pho, Japanese ramen and Taiwanese beef noodle soup. Soon, we’ll have an opportunity to get acquainted with another Asian noodle bowl, this one hailing from the Yunnan province of China. “Crossing the bridge noodles” are enjoyed in a specific way that’s similar, but not identical, to hot pot.

Sheng Long Yu, owner of Shinto Japanese Steakhouse in Strongsville and Kenko in University Circle and Kent, got his first taste of crossing the bridge noodles in Canada, where a Shanghai-based chain of restaurants is spreading like wildfire across the country. That restaurant is Dagu Rice Noodle, and it is likely to do the same on this side of the Canada-U.S. border.

“The last time I went to Canada, I went to one of the stores and thought, ‘This is great stuff. Why not bring it to Cleveland?’” notes Yu. “If there’s one thing that Cleveland needs, especially when it comes to noodle soup, it is diversity.”

When it opens in the next couple of months, Dagu Rice Noodle will be the first global (or international or national, for that matter) brand to open in Asia Town, a district built around immigrant-owned mom-andpop shops. When Yu learned about the closing of Koko Cafe (3710 Payne Ave.), he knew the location would be ideal for the concept, which caters not to Western palates but to Asian ones.

“First of all, it’s between CSU and Case, and both have a lot of Asian population,” explains Yu. “Number two, Chinatown already has a decent amount of draw for the general public. In addition to that, everybody knows Koko Bakery [next door].”

Yu adds that in terms of franchise restaurants, these are “as personalized as it gets for a chain.”

So what are crossing the bridge noodles? The star of the show, not surprisingly, are the rice noodles, which come from Dagu’s own facility in China. Crocks of stillboiling broth are delivered to the table accompanied by a raft of raw ingredients that get added last minute, along with the noodles, to the hot soup. While “crossing the bridge” often refers to a romantic

fable about a man and wife, it also represents the movement of food to bowl while eating.

Broths are pork or vegetable based, spicy or not spicy, and served alongside ingredients like quail eggs, tofu skin, bamboo shoots, kimchi, preserved vegetables, corn, Spam, beef, shrimp and various sauces and pastes. The broth is delivered in bowls that are heated to a staggering 300 degrees Fahrenheit (there are warning signs), so even after the noodles and add-ons are introduced, the soup remains hot. Other menu options come fully assembled.

Dagu shops also serve a selection of street food-style appetizers like Sichuan cucumbers, spicy duck tongue, braised lotus root, crispy chicken and sticky rice balls.

To drink, there are fruit teas and cheese teas, which might soon edge out bubble tea as the next hot beverage trend. Those who adore it swear it tastes better than it sounds, thanks to its sweet flavor, silky texture and frothy cream cheesebased topping.

Depending on how soon it opens, Yu’s Dagu Rice Noodle will be the third, second or even first U.S. based shop to open. Two others are currently under construction, including one in California and another in Las Vegas. And Yu doesn’t plan to stop at just one, he says, adding that he has his sights set on other shops around Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

N A RECENT PHONE INTERVIEW, Matt Vinson, the newest member of folk rock act Caamp, boils down exactly why he joined the former duo to this: “I think Taylor is the best songwriter in the country, if not the world.”

“Taylor” refers to frontman Taylor Meier, crooner and guitar-player extraordinaire.

But Meier’s not quick to agree with this statement.

“That’s very gracious,” he says. “I wouldn’t say that about myself.”

Songs written and co-written by Meier, however, have resonated with people not just in Ohio, from whence the band hails, but all over the planet, garnering millions of listens on Spotify, along with European tours and choice spots at music festivals.

The now three-piece, which also includes banjo player Evan Westfall, was headed to a show in Asheville last week when they took our call. They say being together in a van, all of them in their mid-20s, isn’t all that

mic scene beginning back in 2015. After playing plenty of house shows, their crowds grew, and fans were soon singing every word along with them. Westfall says it’s wild how people have taken to their songs, especially a tune titled “Ohio” (which they do plan on playing in Cleveland, naturally).

“We try to hang out with fans at shows because some of them we’ve known for years,” Westfall says. “It’s hard to put into words how much they mean to us. We hear how they first discovered our music, and stories about how they proposed at our shows and got married to our songs. That’s all you can ask for really.”

Perhaps the reason the Cleveland shows are all sold out, they surmise, is that it’s the only Ohio stop on their recent tour. Fans are travelling up from Columbus (where Meier and Westfall now live again) and all over Northeast Ohio (Vinson currently lives in Kent).

With the new record, Meier says he’s proud that many of the songs are written by all of the guys together.

“I think it just really shows all of our strengths as a trio,” Meier says. “Honesty is our strength. There’s not a lot of flair on the record, and there’s not a lot of production tricks. A lot of it’s based on experiences, and it’s true and relevant in the sound and the way we live our lives.”

Westfall explains that the new album shows immense maturity.

“It shows tremendous growth as songwriters,” Westfall says of the album.

“We’re grown up. We’ve seen most of the country now and we’ve had more experiences. I can’t wait for it to be out there for more people to hear this time around.”

But what they’re making is folk music,

thrilling. Podcasts are played; naps are taken. All the while, they’re thinking about their next gig, next record and next big break. They want to keep the fire going, as this is the full-time thing.

Stories of up-and-coming bands have been told ad nauseam, but Caamp really is a band on the rise. Back in 2017, they played a packed-out Grog Shop. This time around, they’re playing two sold-out shows at the Beachland. At this point, they’ve toured through just about every major American city. And kicking off a new tour this year, they’re playing them all again.

“This has been going at a gradual, comfortable pace, and it didn’t happen overnight,” Westfall says of the band’s journey. “We’ve been hitting every major city now and working up to bigger rooms in every city. But, you know, we’re still in a van [as opposed to a bus]. It all feels really good though.”

Athens, joined last year after helping to produce the duo’s Boys EPs. “He was already opening for us as a solo artist at our shows, so it felt like he was almost a part of the band anyway,” Westfall says.

Right before hitting the road, they were holed up in a studio in Columbus doing some fine tuning to a new record, which they hope sees the light of day this summer. The new music is going to sound somewhat like their old music. In fact, two of the included songs were written even before their very first record came out.

Listeners can expect the band’s usual fast string strumming paired with a sense of abandon. Powering the musical ship though, as ever, are Meier’s old-man vocals.

Meier is upfront about how he crafted his singing voice, as he doesn’t sound like a grandpa when just speaking on the phone.

“It was a lot of singing along to my idols like Ray LaMontagne,” he says. “I try to emulate a bunch of great singers, like Justin Vernon [of Bon Iver] and Norah

a genre that had its time in the sun in the late-aughts. Even the big acts of that time period are progressing toward a new sound, as Mumford and Sons proved in a recent sold-out show at the Q. “What we make is mature folk music; it doesn’t have a Mumford vibe,” Vinson explains. “It’s natural, and nothing is really forced. I think that folk music is still fully alive with acts like Trampled by Turtles and the Avett Brothers. There’s a certain sect of indie alt-folk that’s still going strong that people are into, and we’re here for that.”

So with their wide-brimmed hats and rustic vibe, Caamp is forging a path ahead with the music that speaks to them and that they hope continues to resonate with other musicians and fans alike.

“We’re getting a larger audience every time we play a city,” Westfall reminds. “And that’s super, super exciting. That means that the songs are connecting with more and more people. But we don’t take any day for granted. There are millions of people who would love to be where we are.”

A RANGE OF INFLUENCES: Formed in Kent two years ago, Post Saga draws from funk, pop, jazz and rock.

O’Connor started singing when she was a teen and began writing her own songs back then too. “Me and Levan [Mdzinarishvili] had been friends for years. He used to play in a band when he was younger, and I did solo stuff. I just wanted to play out. We both express ourselves through music, and we wanted to get something together to see what happened. We originally just played covers.” Drawing from influences such as the dynamic funk-jazz act Snarky Puppy and the late Amy Winehouse, the band developed its own jazzy sound. “We all have really eclectic taste in music,” says O’Connor. “Luke [Mason] likes blues and our pianist/guitarist [Steven Carey] likes metal. Our drummer is super into jazz.”

SWITCHING THINGS UP: Almost

everyone in the group is a multiinstrumentalist, and members frequently switch instruments, sometimes even in the middle of songs. “We like to switch things up

during the shows,” says O’Connor.

“It’s second nature for us. Three of the five people in the band are the ones who switch instruments, and I think it’s great from an audience perspective.”

WHY YOU SHOULD HEAR THEM: For its

new EP, the band started writing original material last year.

“Everyone would have ideas or sections of ideas, and we would build on those,” says O’Connor when asked about the songwriting process. The group essentially recorded the album live at O’Connor’s home. The uptempo “I Know” commences with a jazzy drum solo and features raspy, Janis Joplin-like vocals. Songs such as the bluesy “Turnaround” and the soulful “Temporary Lovin’” really benefit from O’Connor’s heartfelt singing. She clearly drives each of the EP’s five tracks.
