UPFRONT SCHEDULED EDGEWATER WATER BALLOON FIGHT CAUSING RUCKUS ONLINE Photo by Erik Drost

THIS WEEK

THE SOCIAL NETWORKING organization Social Society Cleveland has scheduled a Water Balloon Fight for July 16 at Edgewater Park, days before the Republican National Convention.

But due to perceived sexual undertones and suspicions of insufficient clean-up plans, not to mention the organization’s lack of an official permit, the event has become the object of criticism online.

“Looking to have Good/Clean/ Fun this summer like you did when you were a kid?” Reads the latest permutation of the event description on Facebook. “Come participate in a water fight in Edgewater Park.

To participate. 1) Must wear a white t-shirt so people know you are participating. 2) Must bring own water products unless you [purchase] 30 prefilled water balloons for $5. 3) Water fight will not begin until whistle is blown and will continue until that last water balloon is thrown.”

Initially, it was the white t-shirt requirement that angered commenters.

They suggested that the event was not family-friendly at all. It was more akin to a wet t-shirt contest than any sort of good/clean/fun, they said. But those arguments gave way to what many identified as more important environmental issues.

Erin Huber, the founder and executive director of Drink Local Drink Tap, told Scene that though she considered the white t-shirts “tacky,” the pollution was indeed her primary concern.

“The waste would degrade our park and affect our water ways,” she wrote Scene in an email. “Animals can swallow balloon pieces and die.

Animals can get stuck in balloons and die. A nice colorful item that looks delicious can attract animals, like birds, and have effects that I’m sure this group did not intend.”

Huber said that the event was

differentiated in her mind from something like Edgewater Live, which also generates a great deal of litter, because the Metroparks plans and manages the weekly beach concerts professionally.

“I purposely walk the park the mornings after Edgewater LIVE,” Huber said, “and I’m constantly impressed by the cleanup crew and the overall cleanliness of the park postevent.”

Though the Social Society Facebook page repeatedly said that the Water Balloon Fight would have a clean-up crew, commenters probed for more information, convinced that the clean-up crew would be too small.

Assurances that the fight would be held in the grassy area, not the sandy beach, didn’t help. And commenters resented the fact that many of their concerns were being deleted from the page.

No reps from Social Society Cleveland responded to Scene’s request for comment via the group’s listed email account. Metroparks spokesman Rick Haase told Scene, however, that the event was neither approved nor permitted.

Huber said she ascribed no ill will to the Social Society group, but said that in her view, the event was better off canceled.

“There are many organizations working to clean up our communities and create family friendly events at

our lakefront parks. Maybe see if there are ways to partner with those organizations,” Huber suggested, “to have a fun event where people can network.”

In the meantime, a persistent antagonist has responded to many of the recent favorable Facebook posts: “They don’t have a permit, Metroparks have been contacted,” she wrote repeatedly. “This will be shut down.”

IN CUYAHOGA COUNTY, 2016 HAS ALREADY SEEN MORE HEROIN OVERDOSES THAN ALL OF 2015 Cuyahoga County leaders are seeking federal help after 2016’s opiate overdose toll ticked past 2015’s total.

As of June 9, at least 197 people have fatally overdosed on heroin, fentanyl or a combination of the two. In all of 2015, 194 fatally overdosed.

In May 2016 alone, 45 people overdosed and died; 19 lived in Cleveland and 26 lived in the suburbs.

“While our ongoing efforts to collaborate and cover all relevant aspects of our opioid problem have been worthy, it’s obvious that new and more aggressive strategies are needed,” Cuyahoga County Executive Budish said in a public statement last week. “It’s critical that we continue to address the heroin and fentanyl crisis we are facing in our community, which is why I have reached out to the

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services requesting additional funding and support to address this growing – and evolving– problem.”

The county is requesting assistance from the U.S. Department of Health, including “changes to Medicaid reimbursement regulations which currently restrict facilities to 16 beds and require pain management satisfaction surveys as part of doctor evaluations, impacting reimbursement for treatment and promotion of over-prescribing opiate/opioid pain medication.”

Dr. Joan Papp, medical director of Project DAWN, recently authored an article about how pain management intersects with the country’s rapidly growing opiate addiction epidemic.

“More resources, including increased funding and personnel are still needed and are a part of the county’s request,” the county medical examiner’s office states.

Scene’s feature story last week took a close look at one man’s attempts to recover from a seven-year heroin addiction.

During the reporting process for that story, we spoke with Aaron Marks, a member of the the Heroin and Opioid Task Force led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of Ohio. He said: “I think we’re still at a point where this is going to continue to get worse before it gets better. I don’t want to sound defeated, but we’ve been working on it for three years and you see these numbers and it’s tough. I don’t think people realize how much is going on. You see the numbers and it’s kind of shocking, but once you take a step back and look at the scope of the problem, this is the public health crisis of the next generation.”

YOU DESERVE NOTHING BUT THE finest for your furry friend. Deck out your dogs in handmade threads, treat them to locally sourced eats and buy them some artisan jewelry — yes, artisanal dog jewelry. These are a few makers around town ready to help you pamper your pooch.

Pup pastries These aren’t your generic straightfrom-the-bag treats. Think of Sunny’s Tasty Treats (440-320-3945, sunnystastytreats.com) as the Willy Wonka of pet confections, and Lori Riegel-Kapalin’s cookie recipes as the golden tickets.

Bacon and peanut butter treats are the best sellers, but a mint and parsley that combats puppy breath is close behind. The crispy and crunchy treats are preservative free and use no corn, wheat or soy.

For a cooler treat, Riegel-Kapalin mashes fruit, Greek yogurt and a little vanilla or honey into little paw trays.

“When it’s hot out, it’s the perfect small bite,” she says.

On the road This spring, the K-9 Cafe Dog Treat Food Truck (facebook.com/ k9cafetruck) hits the streets. Owner Michelle Spehar knew she wanted to make healthy treats, but the challenge was getting them out to pet owners.

“Then it dawned on me to combine the food truck craze and all the dog events around town,” she says.

Expect street food trends turned into doggy small plates, like chicken tacos, sushi and Italian meatballs.

She’ll also sell the traditional allnatural and organic biscuits in fun flavors like pizza and Blue Hawaiian.

Expect them to pack a punch of superfoods with coconut oil, flax and chia on the ingredient list.

Bowls Your dog is ready to chow down, but you’re short on silver platters.

For the more casual pup, bandanas come in superheroes prints like Star Wars and whimsical prints like owls and cupcakes.

“People really know their dogs,” says owner Elizabeth Brandt. “They always have to buy to match their personality.”

August’s vet oversees the patterns to ensure safety and comfort. They’re designed to be adjustable in length and girth around the ribcage and come in prints like zebra, plaid and argyle.

“I get to spend my workday surrounded by a lot of color and a lot of puppies; I don’t think life gets much better than that,” she says.

NOT JUST A WALK IN THE PARK A day in the life of Cleveland’s dog walkers

By Rachel Hunt YOU HAVE TO START SOMEWHERE. Today, it’s on a quiet street in Lakewood with two Siberian huskies named Niko and Loki welcoming me into their home, wearing big canine smiles before engaging in a firm sniff between the legs. We’re just getting to know one another, but I have to admit: I like where this is going.

Nina Park, the Lakewood manager for Cleveland Dog Walk, began walking the furry cousins, a pair of her strongest and most intelligent clients, late last year. It’s 11:30 a.m. and the 20-minute walk around the block will be the highlight of the duo’s day until their two dads come home from work in the evening.

“Most of the people we service work long hours; they’re teachers, doctors, or they might commute far away for

their job. It really just depends,” says Nina as we start our stroll. “These guys, they’re crated during the day because they’ll probably get into some mischievous stuff if they’re left alone, but no dog wants to be in a crate for 8 to 10 hours or more, so this is their mid-day break, their adventure for the day.”

There are more than 55,000 dogs licensed in Cuyahoga County, with Labradors, German shepherds, boxers and other athletic dogs placing high on the list of popular breeds. The Cleveland Animal Protective League reports that 6,433 adoptions were completed in 2014, of which statistically, a third would have been dogs or puppies based on intake. On an average day, Nina will walk 10 to 15 dogs for Cleveland Dog Walk, a dog walking and overnight care service started by Maureen Murphy. That’s about five hours a day traversing the streets of Tremont, Ohio City, Lakewood, Westpark and Rocky River, all jurisdictions that Cleveland Dog Walk covers. “We have over 75 dogs in our care. It’s a nice, small team and everybody is really enthusiastic and flexible. I’ve been with Maureen since August of 2014,” Nina explains. She says she’d previously been working with rescue dogs in local shelters.

As for what it entails besides walking, “there’s a lot of stopping, letting them sniff and observe,” she says with a laugh.

We let the adorable twosome lead us onto tree lawns, pulling back when a cup of barbecue sauce left on the sidewalk seems to get their attention.

“They become a special part of your life, almost like your own. It’s a lot of fun and as a dog person, you really can’t get enough, so our job is like a sampler platter of breeds.”

In the suburbs there aren’t many distractions mid-day for the dogs, but the local deer population was around this afternoon, a neighbor tips us off, so it’s a quick skip back to the house to end our tour. “The only training involved for the job is spending some time on the route with someone who’s walked and knows the dogs.

Explaining any quirks, say if the dog is stranger aggressive or doesn’t like other dogs, or will bolt if they see a squirrel. To have this job, you really need to love animals and be able to be alone with your thoughts all day.”

As we leave to head to Abby’s house, a 17-year-old mutt and one of the “Top Ten Cutest Dogs in Cleveland” according to a recent Cleveland. com contest, I wonder if people have any apprehension with giving Nina

permission to be in their home while they’re away, a common concern when hiring a dog walker. “We treat the dogs and the space they live in as if it was our own; we build a reputation with our clients. They can read reviews to see how well we’ve done in the past.

A lot of it is trust based and learning to let someone else in. Most people are easygoing; they’re just happy someone can be there for the dogs,” Nina says.

With Cleveland Dog Walk placing first on the Cleveland Hotlist for two years in a row, the proof is in the peanut butter (which we put in a Kong for Niko and Loki to enjoy).

Maureen chose to start Cleveland Dog Walk in 2012 after returning from California to Tremont, a neighborhood she was familiar with since working as a bartender at Edison’s Pub, a dog-friendly establishment. With the addition of more clients and employees, she’s been able to expand considerably into Lakewood and beyond.

Edison’s has served as a catalyst for more than one dog-centric business.

Melanie Petrilli-Barrett, owner of Pet Zeppelin, continues to work at Edison’s to supplement her year ’round professional pet care service that provides help to some 20 clients.

As business has increased throughout Tremont, OHC, and Hingetown for Pet Zeppelin, Melanie too decided to make the commitment to becoming a registered LLC in addition to the licensing, bonding and insurance necessary to safely operate.

We took a 40 minute walk with Roger, a Boston terrier/ English bulldog mix whose humans own local businesses on Lorain Avenue, and it quickly became apparent that walking in the city wasn’t as much of a walk in the park as Lakewood had been.

For one, there were far more strangers walking around who tried to pet Roger even though they didn’t know him. There was more food and

debris on the ground as well. In the tightly pocketed yards on Bridge and Franklin, many dogs were left unsupervised in their lots, which meant we had to keep a close eye on Roger, who doesn’t get along with other dogs. Melanie knows how to quickly disengage conflict between dogs if it arises, something she’s learned through experience and training at Lorenzo’s, a prestigious obedience school in the area that Pet Zeppelin has partnered with as part of their umbrella services.

Both Cleveland Dog Walk and Pet Zeppelin break their walks into 20-minute increments, with pricing beginning in the $15 range and increasing depending on the dog’s needs or the length of their walk. Both businesses report that a majority of their walks are one-onone, with another dog joining in only if it’s a multi-canine household.

It’s all chew toys and fire hydrants during a day in the life of the dog, but for the dog walker, it’s poop.

Mainly, picking up a lot of poop.

AFTER ALL THE OBEDIENCE classes and endless walks around the block, you’re finally ready to take Rover to a paradise designed especially for pooches: the dog park. While state law prohibits having your dog off-leash on public property, for the safety of your mutt and others, there are several off-leash dog parks in and around Cleveland that will finally give Fido some well-deserved freedom.

With the Metroparks close at paw, dog-friendly attractions are plentiful, but you still need to optimize your time spent outdoors. Which ones are best for a scenic selfie? Is there even Wi-Fi access, or do you have to use your own data? How many Tinder matches are nearby? We narrowed the search and reviewed some dog parks in the area so you don’t have to waste any time second-guessing.

As always, make sure you read each park’s rules and PYOP (pickup your

own poop). Be conscious of other dogs and confident your canine will get along with other playmates of different breeds and sizes. Most parks close at 9 p.m. unless otherwise posted.

Clark Field Dog Park West 11th Street & Clark Avenue, near Clark Fields Located near Cleveland Animal Control in the heart of the Steelyard, this is truly the workingman’s dog park. What the park lacks in style, it makes up for in space, being one of the largest fenced parks we visited. A securely enclosed gravel lot is adjacent to grass fields with four shaded sitting areas at each corner of the park. Water bowls, a fountain (for humans and dogs), and bag dispensers (though empty) are on site. There are rumors about Clark Fields being toxic, but a trip isn’t going to turn your pal into the Toxic Avenger or anything.

Downtown Cleveland Dog Park Behind Settler’s Landing This dog park will make your hound feel like a star. The park boasts a beautifully decorated ramp and bridge for serious athletes to agility train or just look cute standing on.

It’s BYOW (bring your own water) but there are bag dispensers, trash cans for poo, and even a fire hydrant for that real “street” feel, all in a fenced gravel lot off the RTA. Lakewood Dog Park 1699 Valley Parkway, Lakewood Hand sanitizer, ropes, Frisbees, tennis balls, water bowls, and other luxuries are available in this smaller fenced park. Giveaways and breaking dog news are prominently displayed on their Facebook page. Offline, the park promotes friendly interaction between furry-friend owners and dogs sniffing butts. Pits need to be muzzled in the park to adhere to Lakewood City regulations.

Bow Wow Beach Silver Springs Park, 5027 Stow Rd., Stow A crowd favorite, this doggie utopia will take you a 30-minute drive south. But let’s be honest: Nothing is too far for your best friend. The property spans 7.5 acres of grassy knolls, wooded trails, scenic views, a separate area for small dogs, a shallow pond (dogs only) and waste disposal stations. All dogs are welcome, but they are required to be licensed to attend Bow Wow Beach.

Columbia Park Dog Beach Lake and Columbia roads, Bay Village I used to think that this was the best beach ever because it was secluded with enough room to spread out, there was a waterfall, and an added bonus of friendly dogs swimming everywhere! As it turns out, it is an “unofficial” off-leash dog beach where you can take your buddy for a dip when it gets too hot outside to exercise on dry land. Be aware the area is not fenced and is near traffic.

South Euclid Dog Park Monticello and South Belvoir Boulevard, South Euclid Near Quarry Park North, this gravel park features a 4-foot high fence, double-gated entrances, poo bags, and a water spigot for hydration. An active dog community exists in South Euclid,

lovingly referred to as FIDO (Friends of the Ideal Dog Park), where you can become a member and support the upkeep of the dog park. Events and activities such as a dog swim and other networking opportunities exist throughout the year.

Zone Recreation Center Dog Park 2044 West 53rd St. Two very minimalist gravel lots are fenced in near the Rapid tracks, one presumably for smaller and larger breeds. A thought-provoking bone sculpture acts as homage to Magritte as well as a bench to sit and rest. The close proximity to the street makes it accessible, but the increased foliage in the area was attracting a lot of bugs.

The neighboring soccer fields and basketball courts were hopping with activity, but no other dogs were present on a weekday night to play with.

FEATURE KENNEL VISION Adoptable dogs will get a sparkling new home at last

By Sam Allard THE CLEVELAND DIVISION OF Animal Care and Control (CACC) is currently housed on West Seventh Street in the industrial Flats. It’s adjacent to Clark Field and across from the just-what-it-sounds-like equipment supplier Air Products.

The “loose gravel” road sign, barbed wire fencing, and enormous pill-shaped storage silos chockfull of “Gaseous Oxygen” and “Pure Argon” aren’t particularly plush surroundings for the city’s adoptable dogs.

The kennel itself is in bad shape too. In fact, if you were to ask former city architect Chris Diehl, the kennel on West Seventh is a “horrible environment for the dogs and the people who work there.”

The kennel was built in 1977, in the era of Cleveland mayor Ralph Perk, and it currently houses more than 100 dogs, stacked in rows of metal cages. Walking inside is not unlike walking into any other unpleasant building where civic business is conducted — the justice center, the impound lot — but at the kennel, a barnyard tang pervades.

Though it probably comes as little surprise, all but one of the 62 dogs available for adoption through the kennel’s City Dogs initiative

(see available pups at petango.com/ CACC) are either American Pit Bull or Terrier mixes. Other breeds are generally taken to the APL or the County Kennel.

The City Dogs program aims to change the image of pit bulls, and subsequently increase adoptions, by preparing the dogs for lives in loving homes “and by creating as many opportunities as possible for the public to meet and get to know [them] for the terrific pets they are meant to be.”

And the good news for all these pups is that in 2017, they’ll have a glittering new facility where those meet and greets can happen. A new $5.3-million kennel will be located on Detroit Avenue and West 93rd.

Construction bids, the city says, will start being collected soon.

Designed by Richard L. Bowen and Associates in Cleveland, in conjunction with a firm called ARQ that has worked extensively on animal shelters, the new kennel will be state of the art. At 13,500 square feet, it won’t be significantly larger than the current kennel, but the big change is that dogs will be kept in acoustically separated pods, which will grant the animals a greater sense of calm. the current kennel are arranged in such a way that the anxious yipping and barking tends to increase along exponential curves.

“The [new] facility will also provide more natural light,” says the Richard L. Bowen project description, “making the animal care and adoption areas more hospitable to the users.”

A better, more hospitable facility in a much more visible area (on the overlapping fringes of DetroitShoreway and Cudell) means more

meet and greets. And that means more adoptions.

The $5.3 million comes from the city’s capital improvement projects budget. It was specifically mentioned in a $20 million allocation from the $100 million bond the city issued in 2014. Along with the kennel, those funds also went toward city rec centers, the Willard Parking Garage and police body cameras.

The new facility is slated to open in the fall of 2017.

Tips from a professional on how to take better photos of your dog

A Space Odyssey

By Greg Murray PET PHOTOGRAPHY CAN BE very difficult and challenging. When I’m photographing on a professional level for clients, I must have an extremely high level of patience and understanding. I never know what to expect from shoot to shoot. If you’re just photographing your own pet for fun, depending on your goal, it can also be challenging. I always have in the back of my mind that I’m photographing dogs and it’s not meant to be easy. So have fun! The more fun you have, the better the photos are. Try less, play more and relax.

Get down at your pet’s level. Lay close to the ground with it. It’s a more natural photo and you see your dog as other dogs would see them. You see what their world looks like.

Center Stage Camp natural light is soft. Sunrise and sunset are great times of the day to shoot. That doesn’t mean you can’t photograph during the day when it’s sunny out. It all depends on what you’re hoping for.

Smile! Want to get a good smile out of your dog? Have a quick play session.

Once you stop, they almost always have a big smile.

Get your dog’s attention by holding a treat or toy right over your lens or smartphone.

Capture your pet’s personality.

Capture your pup doing what it likes to do the most. If your dog sleeps a lot (what dog doesn’t?), take pictures while it’s sleeping. Sleeping dog photos are especially hilarious if your dog is in a funny position. Does your dog have any special abilities?

Capture them.

Is your dog afraid of the camera?

Don’t worry, it’s very common.

Focus on sleeping and action photos.

Consider a zoom lens to get some photos from a distance. Want to try and get them comfortable with the camera? Set it down and put a treat on the lens. When I recently photographed 150-plus dogs for the peanut-butter book, I often let the dog eat some peanut butter off my camera. It worked most of the time and the dog was comfortable. They viewed the camera as a source of treats.

Focus on the eyes. I love a photo of a dog’s eyes looking into a camera.

Studies have suggested that dogs bond with humans through eye contact. As a dog owner, I’m confident that this is true.

Again, be patient. Don’t try to force a photo if your dog isn’t feeling it.

Dogs feed off our energy and they’ll know if you’re frustrated or stressed.

The more relaxed and happy you are, the more relaxed your dog is.

Avoid flash. Flash can frighten your dog and can cause an effect similar to “red eye” in humans. And flash can create a harsh light effect on your dog’s coat, especially if it’s white or black. If indoors, find windows with good light coming through.

FEATURE THE DOG-TOR WILL SEE YOU NOW Your pet might be the therapist you’ve always needed

By Tucker Kelly WE THINK OF PETS OF ALL SORTS as one of the family, but dogs have a special place at our side. However, have you ever thought of your dog as your therapist? Probably not, but dogs provide an incredible amount of structure and comfort.

Kathleen Adamle, tenured professor emerita at Kent State University’s College of Nursing, started the trend of dog-astherapist 11 years ago right here in Northeast Ohio. The journey began with Adamle’s research on the relationship between human and canine. Her idea: “A pet therapy program could temporarily fill the absence of previous support systems and be a catalyst for establishing new social relationships.”

Results supported her thesis, but getting the program off the ground was the next step. Red tape had to be navigated and standards had to be met, but “after one and a half years of explaining and re-explaining that all the dogs that are approved for my program had to be tested and pass the Pet Partners exam and/or Therapy Dogs International,” Kent State University gave her the green light.

If you thought dogs-as-therapists was hyperbolic, think again. These animals have to be vetted. “No dogs on the Kent State campus (except police dogs and service dogs) are allowed in buildings unless they have been approved and accepted into my Pet Therapy team,” Adamle says.

Since publishing her first article on the subject in the Journal of American College Health, establishing the program’s legitimacy, and getting the stamp of approval from the college, Adamle’s brainchild has become a 501(c) (3) organization called Dogs on Campus, the first of its kind in the country.

Adamle’s work has not gone unnoticed.

Colleges across the country have followed her lead. “I received calls and emails from almost every college in the country asking how I could ever get such a program past the administration and the legal department.” Nowadays, it isn’t unusual to see an area of the

college green roped off for students to reunite with man’s best friend during high-stress finals season.

Over at Kent State University, Adamle continues to blaze the trail by deploying her dogs year ’round.

You can find Dogs on Campus in Kent’s libraries, residence halls, and special events. Dogs on Campus are even called on in emergency sitations.

One incredible story can be found on Dogs on Campus’ website: “Dogs on Campus volunteers were called to a residence hall after one of the residents committed

suicide. [Eddye] White was in the hall with one of her therapy dogs, Jessie. The roommate of the student that [sic] committed suicide came out from her room and held Jessie.

After the girl cried into Jessie for a few minutes, she looked up and inquired about the dog’s name.

White proceeded to tell her the dog’s name was Jessie. The student began crying harder and stated that her roommate’s name was also Jessie.

After awhile, the student calmed down and seemed to be doing better.”

In its 11 years, the Dogs on Campus’ volunteers and dogs have served over 77,000 students, faculty and staff on Kent’s regional campuses in Stark County, Ashtabula County and Trumbull County. “We will bring the dogs to whoever asks us to come, as long as it’s on campus,” said Adamle.

Cleveland’s resident dog whisperer, Gatian has been training the dogs of Cleveland since 2004. She runs “The Dog Class,” providing both group obedience classes as well as private training sessions; owners can bring their dog to her or she’ll bring her training directly to your dog in the comfort of your own home.

Gatian describes her philosophy as training dogs “one human at a time,” saying, “I’m not really a dog trainer, I’m a dog owner trainer.” She explains that her work is extremely individualized to each dog’s specific needs: She sizes up each and every situation with great attention to detail, both the ways in which a dog may act as well as how the dog’s owner responds to those actions. From there, she strategizes her plan of attack, both with and for the owner.

It’s clear that Gatian is extremely proud of her work, but never more so than with her own dogs: three healthy, well-behaved and exceptionally cute Labrador Retrievers, she brags, ages 5, 12 and 15.

She attributes all of this to”good exercise, good leadership and good nutrition.” As a dog owner and a dog lover, she knows from personal experience what does and does not work with dog training, day in and day out. It’s a full-time commitment, she says.

Dog training is about so much more than teaching commands and tricks, according to the trainer. It’s the task of reinforcing power roles within the relationship. The dog has to recognize, respect and defer to the leader of this domesticated “pack.” If the dog owner hasn’t been able to establish

themselves as the leader in the eyes of their dog, the dog sees no reason to obey. This motivation to obey can have a drastic effect on everyday life, including the most minuscule details of begging for food to tugging the leash while on a walk or barking at the mailman.

Gatian detailed how she’s handled all these scenarios before, and many more. Her most interesting case was a rescue dog from an Amish home that was terrified by the sounds of household appliances in his new environment. Every time the microwave would ring out or the toaster would pop, it would send the dog into a panic; he was a wreck.

It may seem cruel to suggest that the best thing to do in this situation would be to resist coddling the small, scared pet, but Gatian suggested another option.

Instead of reinforcing the idea that the dog’s fear was justified by comforting him endlessly, Gatian recommended a form of exposure therapy, allowing the dog to be exposed to the sounds without being able to avoid them in fear. Keeping the dog on a leash near the TV or radio eventually desensitized him to the noise. This allowed him to learn that there’s nothing to be afraid of because these things weren’t going to hurt him.

PITTED AGAINST POLICY Widespread bans on pit bulls aren’t sensible public policy. So what’s going to change that?

By Eric Sandy I WAS WALKING WITH MY FRIEND and her three pit bulls at Edgewater Park recently, and I couldn’t help but notice that there were really only two reactions that the dogs evoked. There was the cooing adulation, the petting, and the “rolling around with the dogs” kind of stuff. And then there was the wariness, the questions about muzzles, and the backing away into the grass with all due haste.

She said that dichotomy of response happens all the time when she’s out walking them. Pit bulls — and this is no secret — have a long history with both love and fear in this country.

It should be noted that the dogs were kind and gentle throughout the walk, with nary bark nor bite.

There’s history here, though, with these public reactions. In that conversation, pit bulls are front and center. Dobermans, Rottweilers, German Shepherds have all been vilified to one extent or another, but no breed of dogs has been pinned against the ropes like pit bulls. With a prevailing media and government narrative of fear, pit bulls in need of a home are filling kennels to capacity across the country. (Nearly all dogs available for adoption at the Cleveland city kennel are either American Pit Bull or Terrier mixes.)

Despite the population boom at kennels and rescues, it’s not so easy to surmount the public perception and find homes for these dogs around here.

Many Northeast Ohio cities have enacted bans — Brook Park, Garfield Heights, Lakewood, Mansfield, Massillon, Parma, Put-In-Bay, Richmond Heights, for instance — and many more have legally declared pit bulls to be “dangerous” or “vicious” dogs. (As of 2012, the state of Ohio no longer considers pit bulls “vicious.”)

Cities’ breed-specific legislation has long been a sore spot in the world of local public policy.

“Pit bull” is not even a breed, making the term a misnomer. The bans include any dogs whose DNA comprises at least 50 percent of the three breeds that fall under the pit bull umbrella: American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Lakewood passed its pit bull ban in 2008, and the measure still comes up quite often in casual conversation

and city council hearings. There are rumblings even now among council members that, after nearly a decade, it might be time to revisit the ban.

Zach Ehren wrote a piece earlier this year for the Huffington Post titled “My Pit Bull Turned Me into a Criminal,” in which he describes spending time in his hometown of Lakewood with his newly adopted pit bull, Calliope. He tells Scene that he had always been a dog guy, but he’d never really considered pit bulls.

“Everyone hears all the misconceptions about pit bulls,” he says. “There’s the news and all the terrible stuff they’ve had to go through — Michael Vick and pit bull fighting.

I became more aware of it. But I didn’t start thinking about it a lot more until I knew I was coming home to Lakewood and I was bringing her.”

Ehren landed back in Lakewood for a month between moves, and he began learning more and more about pit bulls and their relationship with various forms of media and government. Like countless others before him, he became part of a subculture of dog owners.

He was thrilled, but bringing Calliope into Lakewood technically constituted a crime and, balanced against his dog’s lovely nature, that seemed wrong. So he started talking with city leaders and pit bull advocates, all of whom had their own perspectives and stories. The law in Lakewood and in other suburbs isn’t going to change overnight, but Ehren says that just talking about pit bulls — raising awareness — is a huge step in the right direction.

“Since I adopted Calli, I’ve realized that I don’t think I’ll ever have another breed,” Ehren says. “I’m fully into the pit bull community now. They’re amazing dogs, and she is by far — and I know I’m biased, because she’s my dog — but she’s by far the smartest dog I’ve known.”

The two camps — the love, the fear — will probably remain entrenched for some time. Such is the nature of narrative in this country. But perhaps with a brighter spotlight, pit bulls will find a bit more unity among those charged with keeping them safe and happy.

Avon Heritage Duck Tape Festival The annual Avon Heritage Duck Tape Festival returns to northeast Ohio this month. It features three days of duct tape-themed festivities, including a duct tape fashion show, a parade and a variety of live concerts. According to a press release, this year’s installment will feature “Americana-themed duct tape sculptures” inspired by everything “from the Bald Eagle and Statue of Liberty to amber waves of grain and apple pie.” Participants will make their sculptures out of patented Duck Tape, which comes in more than 250 colors and designs. Hard-rocking singer-guitarist Lita Ford, formerly of the proto-punk/ hard rock band the Runaways, will perform. ART LONG LOOK Four venues in Cleveland host posthumous retrospective for Anthony Eterovich

By Josh Usmani USUALLY WHEN AN ARTIST receives a large-scale, posthumous retrospective across four prestigious local venues, it’s not considered an introduction. However, Tregoning & Company’s A Thrilling Act hopes to serve as a re-introduction of Anthony Eterovich (1916-2011) and his work, an oeuvre of drawings and paintings

utilizing each media’s unique qualities.

The exhibition begins with a collection of Eterovich’s drawings.

Through these charcoal, conte crayon and watercolor works, a glimpse into both the artist and his process begins to emerge. It is obvious that Eterovich was an observer of his surroundings.

This is perhaps most notable with his inclusion of Michelangelo in “The Renaissance Visitors.” These paintings are the highlight of the exhibition and provide a very active viewing experience for visitors.

Perhaps the most engaging of the exhibition’s paintings is “The

which spans nearly 80 years.

This special tribute to Eterovich began this spring with a collaboration between Tregoning, the Cleveland Institute of Art, ARTneo and the Artists Archives of the Western Reserve. Tregoning’s exhibition is the largest and most comprehensive of the group, and due to popular demand it has been extended through July.

Eterovich taught life drawing classes at the Cleveland Institute of Art for more than 50 years, and for more than 40 years in the Cleveland public schools. His body of work includes portraiture, life drawing, landscape and still life. He mastered both drawing and painting, exploring the similarities and differences and

comprised his environment.

masterpieces from art history. The central figure bears a golden crown and an ominous scowl across his red face. His glasses sit low on the bridge of his nose, while a hand rubs his chin in contemplation. This central head is engulfed by other historical art images, begging the viewer to create their own meaning and narrative.

Less realistic than the other paintings, “The Always Running Art Critic” incorporates more spontaneous and expressive brushwork, indicative of Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s.

The brushwork in Eterovich’s paintings ranges from gestural and spontaneous to mechanical and precise as the artist sought to capture not just the visual qualities, but the emotional essence of his subject.

In the second section of the exhibition, the focus turns to Eterovich’s “Song and Dance” work.

This room showcases Eterovich’s interest in movement and his depictions of it through painting. It seems a logical connection to his wife Alice, a choreographer and dancer. In fact, she is portrayed in the painting “Alice, Choreographer” from 1956.

Additionally, two paintings feature legendary dancer Fred Astaire (“Astaire Tribute” and “Astaire on the Ceiling”).

In “Astaire Tribute,” Eterovich creates a composition that perfectly captures the sense of energy and movement, with miniature vignettes surrounding a larger central Astaire.

Your eyes will dance across the canvas as you follow Eterovich’s lines around the painting. With the blue and white background, it appears as if Astaire is dancing through the clouds. Despite a clear sense of intense observation, Eterovich’s brushwork is full of spontaneous energy, further evoking the essence of the depicted dance performance.

Throughout the exhibition, there’s a feeling of familiarity, not only because of the local monuments, but because Eterovich wasn’t just observing life, he was observing other artists. During his studies at the Art Students League in New York City in the early 1950s, Eterovich routinely visited commercial galleries to view work by some of the greatest artists of the time.

STAGE WASTING AWAY Unbridled (and delightful) hysteria in The Toxic Avenger at Cain Park

By Roy Berko THERE SEEMS TO BE A TREND in the choices theaters are making regarding musicals they produce.

Maybe it’s a desire to attract younger audiences, or it’s the popularity of comic book heroes as the subject of television shows and movies, but like it or not, the age of “unusual” protagonists is here.

Broadway has a serial killer in American Psycho, Beck is running The Heathers about mean girls, Cleveland Play House showcased Little Shop Of Horrors and a human-eating plant, and Blank Canvas staged The Wild Party, which was filled with drugs, “offing” people, and rock and roll. All contained murderers, weirdoes and/or perverts. Ah, for the likes of Oklahoma and Finian’s Rainbow. Even the gun-toting female in Annie Get Your Gun would do.

Now Cain Park, that leafy little oasis in the middle of Cleveland Heights, has transformed the stage of its intimate Alma Theatre into a New Jersey toxic waste dump and is staging The Toxic Avenger.

Yes, The Toxic Avenger, a rock musical based on Michael Herz and Lloyd Kaufman’s 1984 cult film about the attempt of a sweet young man to clean up a New Jersey town, with death-filled results.

The musical, written by Joe DiPietro (who was born in Teaneck, New Jersey, and was responsible for Memphis, All Shook Up and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change), with music by David Bryan, and lyrics by the same duo, contains songs with titles such as, “Get the Geek,” “Kick Your Ass,” “Thank God She’s Blind” and the ever popular, “Bitch/Slut/Liar/ Whore.” Really! (Could I make this up?)

Before the conclusion is reached that The Toxic Avenger is a definite “do not see,” be aware that it’s impossible for anyone with a sense of humor, who likes outrageous slapstick, cross-dressing, soft rock music, and an affinity for the bizarre, not to enjoy themselves. (The young lady sitting next to me at opening night, mid first act, leaned over and whispered to her equally hard-giggling friend, “I just wet my pants from laughing.”)

So, what’s all the fun about?

Once upon a time in Tromaville,

New Jersey, there was a corrupt mayor-lady (who resembles Gov. Chris Christy in many ways and has a Donald Trump hairdo), who with her henchmen (bullies, mobsters and crooked politicians) controlled the city and used it as their personal piggybank, caring little for the environment or the population.

In the same town was Melvin Ferd III, a geeky aspiring scientist, who loves Sarah, the blind librarian. Melvin wants to clean up the town’s toxic waste dump and also dump the mayor.

For his troubles he is thrown into a vat of sludge and comes out a hulking green monster named “Toxie.” Toxie becomes a superhero to many as he

machine, lots of men dressed in drag who sing and dance, as both good and bad guys. Also on stage is Oprah doing her interviewing thing, animal puppets, men with “acne on their soul,” a battle of hairspray cans, a singing and dancing nun, hairdos from hell, and, of course, Toxie, running wild.

The political-infused ending is timingperfect during this election year.

Add a wailing, but subtle, rock score, several nice ballads, fun attempts at coordinated dancing, extended farce, and lots of slapstick, and you have The Toxic Avenger.

In the process, the hysteria is flamed by the blind librarian tripping over every pebble and crack, an old lady being stuffed into a washing

a hero’s hero, complete with green warts, a dangling right eye, glued-on muscles, a charming personality and a nice voice. His “Kiss Your Ass” and “I Promise” were nicely presented.

Natalie Green is wonderful as the cute and well-meaning Sarah. Her duet, “Hot Toxic Love,” sung with

Dawson III, is delightful.

Zaftig, big-voiced Kate Leigh Michalski does triple duty as the bighaired mayor, Toxie’s mother and the singing nun. At one point she appears simultaneously as both the mayor and the mom, with hysterical results. (The wig designer, who gets no credit in the program, outdid her/himself on that visual allusion.)

Malik Akil, another BW musical theater grad, has impressive stage presence and a good sense of comic timing, whether he was playing a black dude or in drag. Trey Gilpin was Akil’s match in “Get the Chick.”

Mariah Burks and Codie Higer were also excellent in multiple roles.

Jordan Cooper and his band rocked it right and wisely didn’t drown out the singers.

P. J. Toomey’s special effects, which it can be assumed included the makeup that transformed Melvin to Toxie, were impressive.

Though the set changes were a little cumbersome, the off time was filled with clever actions and lighting effects.

MOVIES THE WOLFE OF WALL STREET Genius is journey through literary 1930s

By Sam Allard THE EBULLIENT 20TH CENTURY writer Thomas Wolfe is certainly less famous these days than his contemporaries F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. But all three shared an editor: Maxwell Perkins, the perpetually Fedora’d corner-office sage of Charles Scribners Sons. In Genius, which opens Friday in limited release, Jude Law and Colin Firth (as Wolfe and Perkins) portray the intoxicating highs and enervating lows of the writer-editor relationship.

The film is sometimes overly obsessed with romanticizing the writer’s life — indeed, screenwriter John Logan seems to think that all writers spoke entirely as they wrote — but this sepia-toned little dandy builds to an affecting emotional climax, fueled by Wolfe’s dizzying literary rise in the 1930s.

Does constantly being told you’re a genius make you one, the film asks.

And more importantly, does a genius for prose count a lick when stacked against a genius for friendship?

Here is Wolfe, a big-talking North Carolinian whose unwieldy manuscript has been rejected by every major publisher in Manhattan when it is unceremoniously plopped on Perkins’ desk. In a quiet opening sequence, Perkins consumes Wolfe’s

novel over the span of a day. As he finishes the final words on the train to the city, he flashes the recognizable smile of a person who’s just been swept away.

Perkins agrees to edit Wolfe’s careening autobiographical tome and helps shape it into a sensible, marketable book. It would become Wolfe’s celebrated debut, Look Homeward, Angel.

As Perkins and Wolfe dive into editing the next many-tendriled opus, the women in their lives are cast aside.

Aline Bernstein (Nicole Kidman), Wolfe’s lover and financier, takes drastic measures to secure Wolfe’s attention, but he ignores her, convinced that, for example, the opening night of a play Bernstein designed is an insufficient excuse to tear him away from his work. After a heated scene with Bernstein in Perkins’ office, the editor begins to get a sense of Wolfe’s emotional savagery. He returns to his country home to kiss his wife (Laura Linney), who has just returned from vacation with their five daughters.

Perkins is portrayed as a man with few blemishes, a supremely decent human being who wants no credit for his work and who desires only to bring good books into the world. He counsels Wolfe, in whom he sees a sort of foster

son, that his writing does have a larger purpose. In cavemen days, he says in one poignant scene, people would gather around a fire, and one of them would start talking, telling stories so they wouldn’t be afraid of the dark. Perkins’ inner turmoil is stoked by just one nagging question: As an editor, is he actually improving manuscripts, or is he deforming them?

After Wolfe’s second novel Of Time and the River, he is heralded as one of the greatest writers of his generation. He degenerates into more pompous and reprehensible behavior, resenting all who say that it was Perkins’ influence that made his work so successful. Cameos

by Guy Pearce as Fitzgerald and Dominic West as Hemingway make for strong minor scenes, and their modern celebrity doesn’t distract from the Wolfe-Perkins narrative at the movie’s heart. Though Law is sometimes histrionic as the lyrical Southerner, his performance succeeds in juxtaposition to the staid and gentlemanly Firth.

For all its anguish, though, writing isn’t a particularly visual act.

And despite rookie director Michael Grandage’s attempts to portray Wolfe’s prose production as an athletic event, all rabid pencil movements and bourbon-infused poking and hacking at pages, they sometimes seem like cartoon flourishes.

The movie’s most successful sequence is, improbable as it sounds, one of intense editing. Perkins and Wolfe start in the Scribners office and make their way to a bar, hashing out a passage in which Wolfe’s protagonist falls in love. A verbose expression of love at first sight, rife with oceanic imagery, is reduced to its essential words.

“End of Chapter 4!” Wolfe shouts triumphantly, after they’re done, and Perkins chugs away on at outbound train.

“Only 98 more to go!” the editor calls back, smiling.

SPOTLIGHT: THE WAILING THE WAILING PROVES TO BE AN APT title for this grisly, dense, visceral supernatural horror film from South Korea, which opens Friday at the Capitol Theatre as part of its Capitol Selects series. It’s apt because The Wailing’s characters are forever howling and crying and wailing in terror as families in their rural village are gruesomely killed.

Just how they’re being killed is unclear — some combination of supernatural forces and spectacular human violence. Jong Gu (Do Wan Kwak) is a policeman in the idyllic region of Goksung. He is awakened early one morning to the news of a death. When he arrives on scene, (not before he’s had a hearty breakfast!), he discovers a bloodbath. The perpetrator sits at the doorstep, lesioned, white-eyed and catatonic.

Another incident rocks the town shortly thereafter. Same drill. A family is horribly

killed — note well that knives are the murder weapon of choice, so these scenes are nothing if not Pollock-esque — and the perpetrator appears afflicted with the same not-quite-natural ailment, an ailment that apparently begins with a rash.

When Jong Gu’s daughter Hyo-Jin (the remarkable Kim Hwan-Hee) develops said rash, she begins exhibiting traits not seen since Linda Blair in The Exorcist. Jong Gu knows what awaits his daughter and his family if he doesn’t solve the mystery, and so the pressure is on to catch the killer or, as the case may be, banish the responsible demon or ghost. This is a task for which Jong Gu is woefully unequipped, because unlike in American cop dramas, the cops in Korea are largely rendered as hapless, scaredy cats. (This makes for some terrific [un]intentional comedy when the zombie-like

creatures attack the cops and they basically cover their heads and scream.)

A bizarre array of encounters transpires — a shaman is enlisted to attempt an elaborate exorcism of Hyo-Jin; Jong-Gu and his buddies attempt to ambush a fisherman in the nearby valley who they’re convinced is a ghost wreaking havoc on the town — and though the twists and turns of the supernatural elements remain elusive, as do the various creatures and traditions whence they sprang, the tension never stops.

At nearly two hours and 40 minutes, it’s a long sit. But think of it as a Korean True Detective analog, chock-full of violence, mystery, and supernatural influence. SMOKE ’N’ NICE Mabel’s reimagines ’cue for the North Coast — and beyond

Cicora CLEVELANDERS HAVE EVERY right to brag about our current restaurant scene, a fine collection of trendy dining rooms, down-to-earth pubs and above-average boites filled with talented chefs and knowledgeable staffers. Arguably, no one has been more pivotal in ushering in this culinary nirvana than Michael Symon: our own Iron Chef, James Beard Award-winning “Best Chef, Great Lakes,” and beloved co-host of ABC’s The Chew.

Lola; the late, lamented Lolita; and B Spot Burgers have all been hits in Symon’s home town. Now, as you might have heard, he’s doing barbecue.

If you doubt the significance of this — of his recently opened Mabel’s BBQ on svelte East Fourth Street, and his reported goal of bringing “Clevelandstyle barbecue” to the masses — just spend 10 minutes hanging out near Mabel’s door eavesdropping on the tourists, suburbanites and assorted day-trippers peering in the window at the small shrine to Symon’s good

works, filled with branded ball caps, shot glasses, aprons, T-shirts and cookbooks emblazoned with his grinning mug. “Oohhh,” they coo. “It’s Michael Symon’s place. I love him. We should try it!”

More often than not, this declaration is followed by a short shuffle into the line — there is almost always a line — leading into the 110-seat restaurant.

Do not be discouraged: Speedy service, rapid-fire execution by the kitchen, and a semi-loud soundtrack of highenergy tunes do a good job of keeping the tables turning.

Mabel’s resulting blend of culinary and cultural references is clever and mostly satisfying. It’s no accident, for instance, that the industrially chic space — long and narrow, with two floors of seating and a lively bar snuggled beneath a high vaulted ceiling — prompts thoughts of the venerable West Side Market. Symon has, in fact, turned to several marketbased purveyors for ingredients, including bread maker Mediterra Bakehouse and J & J Czuchraj Meats,

barbecue, you may ask? Because, Symon replies, “I didn’t want to be in Cleveland making Texas barbecue. It didn’t make sense, especially when we have a great history of smoked meats, mostly with Eastern European

creators of the outstanding kielbasa that finds its way into the Polish Girl Sandwich, the “meats by the halfpound” lineup, and the mountainous “This is Cleveland” entree ($19), where four fat lengths of the snappy sausage

cohabit a plate with sweet-and-juicy braised cabbage and three meaty, peppery pork ribs.

Dry rubbed and smoked over Ohio apple and cherry wood for three hours, those pork ribs ($15 a half-slab) are the menu’s champs. Meaty, slightly resistant to the tooth — yet yielding coyly at just the right moment — and bearing the requisite rosy smoke ring, they earn the right to bear the “Cleveland barbecue” standard.

As for the process, Symon points out that smoke should be a kiss, not a clobber: “The smokiness should be in balance, just like any other seasoning.” And while you may still overhear grumbling from fellow diners who have not yet learned that “barbecue” is a cooking technique, not a sauce, these ribs should prove instructive. If you must gild the lily, squirt on a bit of Mabel’s barbecue sauce, a thin, apple cider-vinegar-y brew based on Cleveland’s famous Bertman’s Original Ballpark Mustard, with a hint of maple syrup. it isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hot (try a few drops of the Secret Aardvark habanero sauce, from Portland, Oregon, for that), it does deliver a black-peppery kick, and serves as an inspired foil to the unctuous ribs.

On the other hand, a half-pound portion of barbecued pork belly ($14) had nothing much beyond salt and fat to recommend it. And while the Mr. Beef brisket sandwich ($14) was considerably leaner, it was also slightly dry. Shaved red onion and pickles helped; a slather of mayo, while plenty Cleveland, didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t.

If the pork ribs are Mabelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most delicious offering, the giant beef rib ($38) is the most impressive.

Essentially a two-pound, bone-in pot roast rubbed with Eastern Europeanstyle â&#x20AC;&#x153;pastrami spicesâ&#x20AC;? (salt, pepper, mustard seed, paprika, coriander) and smoked over fruitwood for 15 hours, this bruiser â&#x20AC;&#x201D; like all the meats â&#x20AC;&#x201D; arrives at the table on a paper-lined baking sheet, sided with breadand-butter pickles (from Cleveland Pickle), a cheerfully pink kraut (from Cleveland Kraut) and two slices of sturdy white bread (from Mediterra).

There are parts aplenty on the side; we recommend the cracklins ($7): salty, crunchy, lighter-than-air poufs of fried pig skin that dissolve on the tongue like butter. If they arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite irresistible enough on their own, the side of authentic Lawsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Frenchonion chip dip (one of Clevelandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

great, guilty pleasures) surely makes them so. Alternatively, dig into a mess oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; pigsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; ears or tails (each $7), conďŹ tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d, deep fried and drenched in hot sauce, like a luscious twist on Buffalo wings.

Whatever you eat, save room for the mostly Midwestern-inspired sides ($6 each). With the exception of some average greens, this collection of salads and starches is full of wellconceived tidbits that refresh the palate and arouse the senses. Among our top choices are the sassy, sit-upand-take-notice smoked beet salad with horseradish and scallions; the buttery spaetzle with spicy braised cabbage; and the crunchy, dillinďŹ&#x201A;ected broccoli salad dotted with smoked peanuts and dried cherries.

Then thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the chunky, ultra-crisp J.W. Potatoes (named for nationally renowned chef â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and Symon mentor â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Jonathan Waxman), which Symon rightly calls â&#x20AC;&#x153;the best damn fried potatoes ever.â&#x20AC;?

For dessert, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pudding ($6).

We could have used a bit more citrus tang in the Key lime version, but the rich chocolate edition, made with Valrhona 70-percent dark chocolate and topped with toffee popcorn, left us smiling.

AT A PARTY WHERE EVERYONE is mixing and mingling, food has to have a little something extra to really stand out. Caterers, the unsung heroes of any gathering, often fade into the background and rely on the dishes to do the dazzling.

For Marigold Catering (216-5665400, marigoldcatering.com), the first task is pulling in guests by drawing their gaze and then with the element of surprise. Never is that easier than during spring and summer, when fresh fruits and vegetables add bold bursts of every hue.

“During an event, you have so many people walking through,” says executive chef Ali Barker, who Clevelanders may remember from the groundbreaking Piperade. “So it’s all about eye appeal and getting people to want to try something new.”

This year, secret weapons include vegetables that are pickled with a blend of vinegars and spices and accompanied by fruit-infused beverages. Because current dining trends find caterers accommodating a spectrum of diets, especially vegan, owner Joan Rosenthal notes that it’s important to find fresh ways to keep things exciting.

“You have to offer something a little different,” she says. “After the wow factor, you want them to ask, “What was that?’”

Barker, who came on board as executive chef last April, has been using a spiral slicer to create bright ribbons from pickled veggies that contrast well with darker dishes.

For example, the acidity of carrot pairs well with the richness of short rib, says Barker. “It also adds a crunch.

That texture melding gives it a whole layered effect.”

As more events planners request small plates, they’ve also translated that popular dish into slider form.

“When you bite into it, you’re getting a

nice vinegar hit,” says Barker.

Marigold sometimes purees pickled vegetables to give mayonnaise a kick.

A mayo made from pickled zucchini might be used to replace tartar sauce.

The chef also has crafted a miniature dish consisting of pickled red onions topped with polenta, a bit of spinach and chicken. With the rising popularity of street food, it seems everyone wants a taco bar, where you’re likely to see pickled carrots, ramps and scallions among the fixings.

“People want what food trucks are doing, but as a plated dinner with an elegant touch,” adds Rosenthal.

Pickled vegetables also are used as garnishes, especially on charcuterie boards, where they add brightness while filling the demand for edible centerpieces.

“Instead of ordering flowers, a table might sit around a center filled with breads, cheeses, dips, tapenades, homemade crackers and skewers,” says Barker. “It’s now a community meal.”

When it comes to beverages, fruity, colorful craft limeades allow Marigold to capture attention.

“Limeade as opposed to lemonade has a more distinctive taste and it’s a little more open to other flavors,” says Barker. “The lime is more subtle and has a great scent to it.”

A watermelon limeade features a garnish of watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew and mint. Marigold also offers a cucumber variety, which Barker says has low acidity that gives it an extra bit of refreshment. He cuts ribbons of watermelon rinds and red and yellow beets to create a garnish.

“It gives a pop of color that people are blown away by,” he says. “And then they can’t believe they’re eating raw beets. That’s what it’s all about.”

LEMON GRASS THAI CUISINE closed its doors a little more than a year ago after a 20-year run. Almost immediately the large, stand-alone building was purchased by local business owner Yashar Yildirim, who also owns the Turkish restaurant Anatolia Cafe just down the street.

Since then he has been actively searching for a suitable buyer or tenant for the building, which sits close to the Cedar Lee Theatre and is a marquee property both for Lee Road and Cleveland Heights in general.

That search ofďŹ cially ended this week when brothers Josh and Jason Sweet purchased the building. Their plan is to open Boss Dog Brewing (2179 Lee Rd.), a 10-barrel brewery and restaurant that should plug a gaping hole in the immediate landscape. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been looking for the right space for two years,â&#x20AC;? says Josh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We wanted to stick to the east side; weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re Heights people, both my parents went to Heights High.â&#x20AC;?

To get to this point, the brothers played the ultimate long game, starting down a path ďŹ ve years ago with this exact end game in mind. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We started out as your average home brewers, doing it on our stove,â&#x20AC;? explains Josh. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We kind of got a passion for it and decided that this was something we really wanted to do. Jason was a little more into it so he was going to be our brewmaster.â&#x20AC;?

The pair sent letters to all their favorite breweries in search of an entry-level position. Ultimately, it was Matt Cole from Fat Headâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s who gave Jason his ďŹ rst real job, hiring him on as the production facilityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ rst employee. He worked his way up to third-shift brewer, only recently leaving his post.

Following signiďŹ cant renovations, which should take anywhere from six to nine months, a 10-barrel brewhouse and six to eight fermentation tanks will be visible from the street and inside the restaurant. The beers will be sold exclusively on site to begin with, but may make their way to other establishments at a later date. As for the style of beer, Josh says they wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t

It was May 2013 when chef Cory Hess & Co. purchased the old City Grill space near the intersection of West 65th and Detroit and set to work transforming the entire building into a contemporary dining spot in Detroit Shoreway. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Finally, after three, four years itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ nally happening,â&#x20AC;? says GM David Hridel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have all our permits, the staff are in training, friends and family is scheduled and we open on June 24 for business.â&#x20AC;?

The interior was designed by local architect Robert Maschke. The modern, minimal space makes use of a few core elements like bamboo, glass, leather, steel and snow-white Corian. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Other than a few neighbors and friends who knocked on the door, nobody has really seen it,â&#x20AC;? adds Hridel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I really think that Robert is setting himself up for some recognition along the lines of a Beard Award for design. Chef-owner Hess is joined by Rebecca Hess, his wife and executive chef. George Hickey and Shawn Henton are the sous chefs, while bar manager Jeff Rowe and veteran mixer Erica Coffee are behind the bar.

There will be 115 seats on two levels, at the bar and on the patio. It will be dinner-only every night but Sunday and Monday, serving clear up until 2 a.m. if the demand is there. Lunch, brunch and additional days of service might be added down the line.

Hess’s plans for the food menu reveal an eclectic mix of moderately priced tavern fare and slightly more upscale entrees. Snacks range from fried peanuts with herbs to smoked candied salmon with jalapeno. A vedge-heavy starter section includes salads and spreads, while a pizza menu contains five meat and meat-free options. A large raw bar selection runs the gamut from raw oysters on the half shell and peeland-eat shrimp cocktail to clam ceviche with mint and a fully decked out seafood platter. A concise entree section features dishes built around surf and turf, fried chicken, salmon and a breakfast-for-dinner plate with poached eggs and smoked steak.

SLYMAN’S TAVERN TO OPEN SECOND LOCATION IN ORANGE It’s been just over a year since Slyman’s Tavern (6901 Rockside Rd., 216-642-0062, slymanstavern.com), an offshoot of the original deli on St. Clair, opened in Independence, and already there are plans for a second location. That location, the former Red Robin at 4009 Orange Place, should open sometime next year, says Freddie Slyman.

“It’s not going to look like a Red Robin,” Slyman promises. “We’re going to continue with the same sports bar and tavern feel.”

Building off the 50-year tradition, the Slyman’s Tavern concept dishes up the downtown deli menu in a sports bar environment. A large bar,

a sea of flat-screen TVs and seating for 150 guests inside and out sets the tavern apart from the bustling deli.

But those melt-in-your-mouth corned beef sandwiches on butter-soft rye are one and the same.

Slyman says it will take close to a year for the transformation.

When done, Slyman’s will be joining a growing retail community, with developments like Pinecrest and others coming online around the same time.

“We’re really excited about the Pinecrest and other development in the area,” he says.

THE OHIO CITY FARM STAND IS OPEN FOR THE SEASON At nearly six acres, the Ohio City Farm is one of the largest urban farms in the United States. The land is farmed by organizations such as Refugee Response and Cleveland Crops, which empower refugees to become self-sufficient and create employment opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities.

While much of the food grown there goes to local restaurants like Great Lakes Brewing and Flying Fig, an even greater amount is sold at the Ohio City Farm Stand, a shipping container turned retail spot designed by LAND studio. The stand sells straight-from-the-farm produce like leafy greens, fresh herbs, beets, garlic, peppers, tomatoes and various types of summer squash.

The stand accepts cash and credit cards, but also Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) and EBT, ensuring that all community members have access to fresh, healthy food options.

The farm stand is open Fridays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through November. It is at the corner of West 24th Street and Bridge Avenue, right by Market Garden Brewery’s production facility.

A LUST FOR LIFE The veterans in FLAG keep punk’s primal spirit alive

SHORTLY AFTER SINGER KEITH Morris began playing with Black Flag in the late ’70s, California quickly started teeming with punk and hardcore bands that often couldn’t even get legitimate gigs because their fans were reputed to be so rowdy.

Morris contributed to the very first recordings, most notably the acerbic debut EP, Nervous Breakdown. Four songs of utter vitriol, it’s generally considered to be the one of the first hardcore albums.

“We were just excited to be able to record,” says Morris via phone from his Los Angeles-area home.

He brings FLAG, a band featuring members from Black Flag’s original lineup, to the Grog Shop on June 22.

“We had never been in a recording studio before. All the different things happening to us culminated when we were in that studio. We recorded above a bar on one of the busiest corners in Hermosa Beach. On a Friday or Saturday night, it’s totally ridiculous and turns into spring break in Miami Beach West.”

A live band performed at the bar downstairs as the group tried to record.

“We had to stomp out that bleed-through,” says Morris.

“Led Zeppelin’s ‘Kashmir’ wasn’t something we were about. I’m not dissing them. They’re one of my favorite bands. For about four albums, you won’t rock out any harder than that. We were playing as loud as we could. We kept playing and playing and playing. The guy who owned the studio was wigging out. He said he had never heard anything that loud or bad before. We could have included it as a scene in Spinal Tap.” After the EP came out, Morris quit the group.

“I wasn’t having any fun,” he says. “We spent three years trying to sort things out. We had no clue. There was no big-name rock manager saying, ‘You need to do this because if you do this, these people will like it and it will be an easy transition from point A to point B to point C. We didn’t have any of that.

Our thing was a comedy. We were living it out. We should have been writing a screenplay about what was going on with us.”

Morris says he didn’t mind the regimentation that occurred when

Chuck Dukowski became the bassist.

He wouldn’t join until the band agreed to rehearse for three or four hours a night.

“I went along with that,” says Morris. “I loved the songs and I loved playing and being in a room where it was so loud that you couldn’t even hear yourself think. I was down with that for a while, but there was nothing going on with the band.

We played a party. We played a basement. We’d play in somebody’s backyard. We played the Standard Oil Refinery workers’ playhouse which was a rumpus room with a pool table and a bar. The room held maybe 75 to 80 people. We found out very quickly that the majority of people where we lived weren’t happy with us. They never heard anything like us. They thought we were from a faraway planet. Consequently, there were people in our community who wanted to just kill us. If they were gun owners, maybe they could have done it mafia style, so our moms and dads and relatives couldn’t identify us.”

Though Morris never rejoined the group, the band subsequently went through various incarnations. At

one point, actor/writer/singer Henry Rollins fronted the group, which still exists today.

“They replaced me immediately,” says Morris. “I think they played their first show two weeks after I left. I was scratching my head, going ‘why didn’t you tell me you had all these shows coming up?’ I might have learned more songs if they had told me. [Singer] Ron only lasted six months. I don’t know his story, but I know that he brought a glam drama/ Queen kind of vibe to the band. He was into the New York Dolls. I was into Iggy and the Stooges.”

In 2012, Gary Tovar, the man behind the independent SoCal concert promoter Goldenvoice, asked original Black Flag bassist Chuck Dukowski to make a speech at a 30th anniversary concert he was throwing. Dukowski had no interest in making any kind of speech, but since he knew the Descendents drummer Bill Stevenson and guitarist Stephen Egerton would be at the event, he thought he could put a version of his old punk rock band back together and perform rather than give an oration. MUSIC musicians who had played in Black Flag over the years.

“All that would be missing would be the slot machines and the glittering signs,” says Morris. “It would have been a band that would have opened for Wayne Newton in Las Vegas. Luckily, some of the guys said they couldn’t do it. The Descendents took it upon themselves to put their foot down and would only play so many Black Flag songs.”

Dukowski recruited original Black Flag singer Keith Morris to complete the lineup. The band didn’t have time to rehearse; it used soundcheck to blast through a few songs. The audience responded to their set enthusiastically, and when the guys got through playing they realized that they had a great time and should maybe do something together down the road. After the gig’s footage showed up on YouTube and Facebook, interest in a reunion tour started to grow; the band then nabbed another former Black Flag singer, Dez Cadena, to join the group, which it christened FLAG. “We thought we would be stupid to not want to go out there and do it some more,” says Morris.

Even though Morris has kept active with the punk outfit Off!, revisiting Nervous Breakdown and early Black Flag tunes has become a real challenge for him.

“I have a difficult time,” says Morris, 61, who admits he’s urinating as he talks to us. “We were just in Las Vegas for Punk Rock Bowling. The weather is really hot and dry. You’re either out there

Ironically, guitarist Greg Ginn reconvened his own version of Black Flag at about the time that FLAG came together, so now there are two versions of the group. Morris says he doesn’t have fond memories of the days when FLAG was on Ginn’s label, SST Records.

“We try not to talk about [Ginn] because all of our friends throughout the years who were part of the SST roster that all got treated the same way the guys in Flag got treated,” he says. “Some of us got financially compensated on certain levels; some of us were snubbed. You have record labels that owe you money. It’s like the IRS. Everyone always owes the IRS money. Occasionally, the IRS owes you money. The IRS is not coming to knock on your door to give you a check for $300 or $700.

You have to go to them.”

So is FLAG ultimately a better band than the original Black Flag ever was?

“Given everybody’s health issues, we’re extremely lucky to be here and to do what we’re doing,” says Morris.

“I don’t think we’re better. We’re friends, and we have the opportunity to go out there and play. We’re often playing with younger bands that are supposed to be stepping up and fucking hitting home runs and running up and down the court and slam dunking the ball. A lot of them don’t do that. A lot of them are bunting to get on first. A lot of them are driving to the basket and missing the hoop and hoping to get fouled. We wholeheartedly back what we’re doing. We can’t say we’re doing it better now than when we were younger. There was so much anger and chaos and frustration and jealousy and depression getting

baking or in a room that’s like a frozen meat locker with the air conditioning. It’s one of the worst things for a vocalist. You’re not even breathing real air. You’re breathing this air pumped in with Freon. I don’t want to come off as a whiney, complaining, 5-foot-5 asshole. I do what I can do. I try to be as energetic as possible.”

In 2013, the band played a highenergy secret show at the Moose Lodge in Redondo Beach, the site of the very first Black Flag concert.

stirred up in the pot then.”

He says the band was “very volatile” in the early days and that contributed to the music’s intensity.

“It was as if we had something to prove,” he says. “We still do, but we have to take a couple of steps back.

We have what Iggy Pop would call a ‘lust for life,’ and we’re excited to do this and we’re happy we’re still alive and able to go out and do what we do.”

MUSIC THE FINAL COUNTDOWN Motion City Soundtrack gears up for what might be its final tour

By Eli Shively AFTER 16 YEARS OF MAINTAINING its reputation as one of the most influential and unique pop punk bands around, Minneapolis’ Motion City Soundtrack is finally calling it quits.

Sort of.

As frontman Justin Pierre explains in a recent phone interview, the group isn’t quite sure what the future has in store, but the guys know for certain that their multi-leg, international “So Long, Farewell” tour, which includes a June 20 date at House of Blues, will feature the last live shows they’ll ever play.

“We really don’t have a term for what this is other than we just don’t want to tour anymore,” Pierre says, encouraging fans not to call it a breakup, per se. “I think over time it just became apparent … [after] 16 years of doing this the way that we have.”

Despite how worn out the band may be after years of album cycle upon album cycle, they decided to give their dedicated fan base everything they’ve got, one last time. Set lists from the farewell tour, which is already well into its second leg, read like a hit parade of crowd pleasers — as Pierre puts it, “songs we play that we notice people go nuts for.” However, he adds that while the tour is designed first and foremost as a goodbye to fans, the sentimentality flows both ways.

“The thing I’ve been working on is trying to be in the moment and enjoy what’s happening as it’s happening,” Pierre says, explaining how he’s coping with the finality of it all.

The stage can be an anxietyinducing environment for the singerguitarist whose candid lyrics about mental illness helped give Motion City’s catalog a more emotional edge than the cookie-cutter pop punk of its Warped Tour peers. In spite of that, though, he’s been able to experience this tour a little differently than past ones.

“I think on this final tour, I’m getting to that place where I can be on stage and not freaking out about everything I’m doing … I’m getting better at it, but it’s definitely a new thing for me,” Pierre says.

It’s a fitting way for Pierre, who has always grappled with questions about

happiness and contenment, to end his last tour with the band.

Those issues served as overarching themes of Motion City’s discography, the lyrical content of which followed Pierre through his struggles with getting sober, finding love, and feeling

comfortable in his own skin. If it all sounds too dark and revealing for a band specializing in synth-heavy bubblegum punk tunes, that’s because it pretty much is. But while it doesn’t seem like it’d work on paper, in practice the band’s formula has proven time and time again to be something truly remarkable.

the aforementioned “bubblegum” aspect. While the band strays from penning straight-up pop tunes, there is a certain sugary feeling to the instrumentation that sets them apart and really solidifies the contrast between music and lyrics. Certain moments — like the synth lead in “My

“There’s no crazy, like, ‘never talk to each other again,’” Pierre says.

“We need to not tour for a while, and that’s important to all of us. Outside of that, there’s no plan. There probably should be, but we’ve never been one to plan too far in advance.”

How could they, really, when they’re too busy enjoying their final months on the road?

“It’s important for us to be in the moment and experience these shows as they’re happening and really soak it all up,” he says.

MUSIC IT’S A CELEBRATION Make Music Cleveland features an eclectic mix of local music

By Danielle Immerman IT’S NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO go a day without listening to music.

Music is everywhere. It’s played in restaurants and stores. Music has the power to promote change; it has the power to express how people feel without them ever having to say anything at all. So what better way to show our thanks for all of the musicians who make music possible than by having a day dedicated to music?

On June 21, Cleveland will join over 800 cities around the world in celebrating International Make Music Day. Pioneered in France in 1982 as the Fête de la Musique, Make Music Day has spread to over 120 countries and continues to grow each year.

Completely different from the typical music festival, the free event gives every kind of musician — young and old, amateur and professional — the opportunity to take to the streets, parks, malls and porches to share his or her music and a love of music with friends, family and strangers.

In Cleveland and throughout Cuyahoga and Lorain counties, scores of amateur and professional musicians will be performing at more than 40 venues during the day and throughout the night.

From Progressive Field to Happy Dog at Euclid Tavern and everywhere in between, you’ll be able to enjoy a variety of live performances in a celebration of music. If you’re a harmonica person, then you won’t want to miss the sunset singalong and harmonica giveaway at Edgewater Park; but if trombones tickle your fancy, then make your way to Lakewood Baptist Church for a trombone demonstration and a performance by Sousa Palooza.

Jazz enthusiasts won’t want to miss Kamal Abdul-Alim at the Euclid Tavern. A jazz trumpeter from Cleveland, Abdul-Alim studied composition at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. After his time at Berklee, Abdul-Alim continued to grow as a musician and composer by traveling and studying all over the world, spreading his love for African and jazz music wherever he went.

Tracks like â&#x20AC;&#x153;Note to Selfâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Everydayâ&#x20AC;? take way longer to unfold than what many fans may be used to, every word hung upon as the song steadily builds toward an emotional crescendo. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Mass,â&#x20AC;? however, is at the other end of the spectrum â&#x20AC;&#x201D; clocking in at under two minutes and chockfull of one liners like â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bury me beneath New York State/Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the only place where I feel dead.â&#x20AC;?

Gonna Miss It All, launched the band from the world of DIY house shows and free Bandcamp downloads to indie punk stalwart Run For Cover Records where it received praise from the likes of Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and even The New York Times.

Perhaps because of this, their third LP, Holy Ghost, which came out last month, sounds more carefully constructed than the rest of their catalog. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We realized how many people were listening to the band and how many people we were inďŹ&#x201A;uencing,â&#x20AC;? says Ewald, â&#x20AC;&#x153;and the weight that our words held in reality that we just thought was never there before.â&#x20AC;?

As a result, the lyrical content on Holy Ghost feels more thought-out and mature, while still maintaining the dry, ironic edge both Ewald and his songwriting counterpart Brendan Lukens are known for.

Growing up doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily mean growing apart â&#x20AC;&#x201D; regardless of how Ewald and Lukens are maturing as musicians. In fact, even after years of relentless touring, the band is excited to be back on the road again this summer supporting the new record. The Holy Ghost Tour, which includes support from Joyce Manor and Thin Lips, rolls through the Agora on June 18.

A Muscle Shoals Music Revue with the Amy Black Band and Angela Perley: FAME Studios and Muscle Shoals Sound Studios birthed the “Muscle Shoals sound,” a cross-pollination of blues, folk and soul music. (Sam Phillips said that living in the northern Alabama city influenced his work with Sun Records in Memphis.) This tour, helmed by the dynamic Amy Black, distills the best of that sound into a night of terrific music.

With tunes from Etta James, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart, Bob Seger and many more, you’re getting hooked up with a slice of one of the greatest and longest-running American rock ‘n’ roll traditions.

She Wants Revenge: She Wants Revenge returns to town tonight for the 10th anniversary tour of their debut album. The band, a dark synth collaboration from Adam Bravin and Justin Warfield, took an indefinite break in 2012. But what was initially a single reunion show in Los Angeles quickly became a national tour. Late last year,

American Horror Story: Hotel licensed SRW’s 2006 hit “Tear You Apart” for the popular FX network show. The song launched the latest installment of the anthology series into the dark messy corners of a Ryan Murphy fever dream. While Lady Gaga and Matt Bomer flirt with a couple in a dark Hollywood cemetery, the song plays as they lure the couple back to their hotel suite, initiate an orgy, and then literally tear apart flesh as Gaga and Bomer bite down and devour their prey. Blood is everywhere as the song thumps on, the lyrics becoming all too real. The scene was a swirl of sex and gore, a grotesque display of hedonism, and a lust for the vicious execution of life. Ziggy Marley: With his new, selftitled album, reggae singer Ziggy Marley focuses on promoting love and activism. He adroitly mixes reggae, rock and even pop. He goes back to his family roots by paying tribute to his late father, Bob Marley, on the

Known for his many garage rock reincarnations, including his collaboration with Mark Sultan called the King Khan and BBQ Show, Khan’s Shrines resurrect the sounds of the ’60s through a combination of soul, R&B, and psychedelia.

The group includes Ron Streeter, former percussionist for Stevie Wonder and Curtis Mayfield, as well as tenor saxophonist Torben Wesche, who’s regarded as the “John Coltrane of Germany.”

AN INSTRUMENTAL START: The band first came together when guitarist Ron Kretsch and bassist Ray Piller, who had just left the local indie rock act the Duvalby Bros, started playing together.

“Ray invited me to jam with him and drummer Michael Peffer, and it gelled as a three piece, Kretsch says. “We considered adding a singer but we were enjoying the challenge of trying to keep people’s attention 100 percent without that kind of figurehead, so we never got a singer. We added a second guitar, eventually.” At the time, instrumental acts such as Don Caballero and Karma to Burn had good reputations, making it possible for instrumental acts to get gigs. “I don’t know that we were inspired by those bands, but they made it easier to get accepted,” says Kretsch.

IMPORT ONLY: Initially, the band put out a 7-inch on Cambodia Records, the same label that was home to hard rock heroes Disengage. The 7-inch and Disengage’s first 7-inch came out at the same time. “That was a fun release party,” says Kretsch.

“We had a lot of friends who liked both bands.” Now out of print, the release does appear in the used-

records bins from time to time. “It can be found for a dollar here and there,” says Kretsch. “I recently saw one at Square Records in Akron, and I almost bought it.” In 1998,

WHY YOU SHOULD HEAR THEM: “Sixteen and Three,” the opening tune on Biblical Proof of UFOs, expertly alternates between loud

and quiet segments before finishing with a crescendo. “We were in an argumentative phase,” says Kretsch of the recording sessions that took place at Mars with producer Bill Korecky at the helm. “We are all stubborn people and we were really stubborn in our 20s,” says Kretsch.

“There were arguments that didn’t need to happen.” And yet, Kretsch says he stands by the material. “If I sit down and pick up a guitar, I can still play those Biblical songs,” he says. “They’ve really stuck with me. When you listen to that stuff, you’re listening to me learn how to play guitar. I was mostly a bass player before that. I was lucky I got to figure out my voice on the instrument and conventions of arrangements with a brilliant rhythm section that made me sound better. It was an important experience for me. We’re playing together again because we like what we did. It won’t be a full-time thing again but we’re doing it out of respect for something we’re proud of.”

C-NOTES MAKIN’ THE SCENE Pere Ubu singer David Thomas makes donation to Rock Hall

By Jeff Niesel ONE OF THE MORE CREATIVE people to ever have his name in the Scene masthead, singer David Thomas worked at the paper in the early ’70s before he would go on to launch Rocket from the Tombs and Pere Ubu. Recently, when he compiled information about his past in a book for the band’s current Coed Jail! tour, he found one of the sweatshirts that he and “his team” had while he worked at the paper. He writes about it in an Ubu scrapbook he released earlier this year.

On Friday, June 10, Thomas stopped at the Rock Hall to donate the item. He brings Ubu to the Beachland on July 2.

“It looks so tidy,” Thomas said as he looked over the Cleveland Rocks exhibit where several Rocket/ Ubu items are on display. “It should

really just be a pile of shit.”

As he handed the shirt over to curator Meredith Rutledge-Borger, he admitted he couldn’t quite remember why he had it in the first place.

“I don’t actually remember this shirt other than it showed up on my farm in Pennsylvania where I discovered it about five years ago,” Thomas said as he sat in the Rock Hall administrative offices. “It’s far too small to fit me, so it wasn’t mine. It had to have been from about ’73 or ’74, probably ’73. That’s when I was doing the [Croc o Bush] column. I had pretty free rein. I would write up some convoluted joke or absurdist mind play. I became known by the pseudonym Crocus Behemoth.”

Thomas also plans to donate a lawn mower roller bar that was used at the band’s very first gig at Pirate’s Cove in 1976.

“It’s one of the main percussion things from that day,” he said of the rusted roller bar that resembles a small pipe. “It’s our kind of maraca.

By Dan Savage Dear Dan, I’ve been dating a nice guy for a month or so. Sex is good, and we’re faulty compatible in other ways, too. He told me he likes to wear diapers. He said he doesn’t want me to do it with him, but that every once in a while he likes to wear them because it makes him feel “safe.” He said that this odd behavior isn’t sexual for him, but I have trouble believing him. I’m not sure how I feel about this. He also said that it embarrasses him and he wishes it wasn’t something he needed. If you have any insight into what to ask him or how to make sure I can keep him satisfied sexually as we move forward (if we do), it would be appreciated.

That said, DIAPERS, “this makes me feel safe” and “this makes my dick hard” aren’t mutually exclusive phenomena. Both can be true. (And if diapers really do make adults feel safe—and I wanna see data on that—we could rebrand them as “portable individual safe spaces” and make them available at our better universities.)

Another clue there’s something sexual about this thing for diapers: not wanting you around while he wears them. Maybe diapers are something he enjoys wearing during alone time, or maybe the sight of him in diapers makes the sexual aspect hard to deny.

I would advise you to say some vaguely affirming things (“Your diaper thing doesn’t bother me, and wouldn’t even if it were sexual”) without pressuring him

to include you at diaper time. Don’t rush things—relationship-wise or diaper-wise— and focus on establishing a mutually satisfying sexual rapport/repertoire.

P.S. I think you meant “fairly compatible” not “faulty compatible.”

Normally I would correct a mistake like this before printing a letter—but I rather liked your accidental phrase. A loving and functional-but-imperfect relationship— really the best we can hope for—could be described as faulty compatible.
