UPFRONT NORTHEAST OHIO MUST STAND AGAINST ICE’S REIGN OF TERROR ON THE NORTHERN BORDER

EVERY DAY, HUNDREDS OF undocumented immigrant farm laborers in Ohio make the sign of the cross as they venture out to work, said Veronica Dahlberg, executive director of the Latino organization HOLA Ohio, not knowing if they’ll return to their homes and families.

Such is the reign of terror imposed by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and their recent targeted assault on the Latino community across the United States.

In a demonstration at the Willard Park Free Stamp on Monday, held after a weekend of raids reminiscent of Fascist ethno-states, Dahlberg stood with dozens of representatives from the region’s Latinx communities, sounding the alarm that they had reached “a breaking point.”

“The jails are filled, here and at the southern border, with cages that are holding countless children in overcrowded, unsanitary conditions,” she said. “I don’t know why — or maybe I do know why — we have been targeted. There is an effort to destabilize whatever fragile power our community has due to our growing numbers.”

Dahlberg cited a recent article in the Detroit Free Press, which said that Ohio was home to the thirdhighest rate of immigration arrests in the nation. Ninety percent of those arrests are of Latinos.

“They aren’t deporting Canadians,” Dahlberg said. “They aren’t deporting immigrants from Poland or Russia.”

The rally was organized, in part, because an Akron father of four was one of those arrested during the weekend roundups. He is likely to be deported soon, after 30 years living in the United States. He’ll leave behind a wife and U.S. citizen children. His wife spoke at the rally, saying that she and her husband had lived in fear for 20 years because of bogus asylum paperwork filed by an attorney whom Dahlberg said was later criminalized. It was on the basis of the asylum denial that the Akron man was arrested this weekend.

parents are afraid to let their children play outside, where the slightest error on a piece of paperwork can result in an arrest and deportation.

Selina Pagan, president of the Young Latino Network in Cleveland, said she stood in solidarity with HOLA and all those under attack. She called on all allies to stand in support of undocumented immigrants and in defiance of ICE. “I hope that we gather our allies in Northeast Ohio to rally around this cause and to support organizations like HOLA that are doing boots-on-the-ground work,” she said. “This does not begin and end with the undocumented community, so I want to put the call out to all allies, because we are all Americans.”

Google and McClatchy to Launch Digital Newsroom in Youngstown Youngstown, Ohio, has been selected as the pilot city for the Compass Experiment, a joint project of the McClatchy newspaper chain and Google aimed at creating sustainable digital newsrooms in

areas with limited resources.

After the announcement last month of the The Youngstown Vindicator’s forthcoming closure, the Compass Experiment’s GM, Mandy Jenkins, said she instantly recognized the Mahoning Valley as an optimal laboratory for their project.

She said in a press release last week that her team was already on the ground in Youngstown, working to assemble a small full-time staff with the hopes of launching in the fall.

Available positions, including an editor and a reporter, have been posted by McClatchy. (Jenkins wrote that they would only consider applications from “those working in or with strong background in Youngstown or the surrounding region.”)

Google, too, is delighted to be chipping in with the reconstruction of the industry it helped dismantle.

“There has been much impassioned commentary about the closure of The Vindy after 150 years, and we are pleased to play our part alongside McClatchy in helping local journalism develop new approaches for the future,” said Google’s VP of

news, Richard Gingras. “Through the Google News Initiative’s Local Experiments Project, we want to explore evolving business models in local news that can benefit not only the people of Youngstown, but communities across the country.”

The Compass Experiment will be selecting two other communities in which it will launch similar digitalonly newsrooms in the coming months.

This development arrives shortly after ProPublica announced that it would expand its local reporting network to Youngstown.

Applications for that position, which will provide a year’s salary and ProPublica’s national editorial resources for a reporter working at or publishing in a Youngstownarea outlet, were due this week. A recipient will be announced in the coming weeks.

“What’s going on in Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley cries out for solid investigative reporting,” said Stephen Engelberg, ProPublica’s editor in chief, in that announcement. “We created the Local Reporting Network to fill that critically important need.”

UPFRONT Council-Backed Cleveland Heights PAC Forms to Keep Government Exactly the Same A group of Cleveland Heights citizens have created a political action committee to push a ballot referendum. No, not the group advocating for an elected mayor. This new PAC has formed to encourage residents to retain the city manager form of government.

Cleveland Heights is one of only two municipalities in the county that has a city manager form of government. The appointed manager is the city’s chief executive while the legislative efforts of the city fall to the part-time city council members, including a president of council who retains the title of mayor. Several years ago, a citizens group formed to attempt a ballot initiative to change the form of government so that residents could elect their city leader. When the city heard about these efforts, they responded with

a comprehensive charter review effort run by 15 appointed residents and a facilitator. The charter review lasted more than a year and the commission members voted to retain the city manager form of government.

In response, residents went through with the ballot initiative, forming a grassroots campaign titled “Citizens for an Elected Mayor�

(CEM). However, it seems several members of the charter review commission and the city council are so dedicated to maintaining the city manager that they’ve created their own PAC. In just one month, this second PAC has raised more than $12,000 for the effort.

Cleveland Heights vice mayor Melissa Yasinow told Scene that the Cleveland Heights Citizens for Good Government (CHCGG) PAC is an attempt to, “ensure the councilmanager form of government continues to serve our community well, as it has for nearly a century.�

Yasinow said that the manager is in charge of daily operations and maintenance and does the job based on, “expertise and experience, not based on partisan politics and personal agendas.�

Yasinow felt the effort was important because, “We cannot

used to convince residents to vote to retain the city manager form of government. Ostensibly, this means that the funds will likely pay for campaign materials for an alternative ballot measure. At last week’s city council meeting, residents noted that while Citizens for an Elected Mayor have already proposed ballot language, they are unaware of the wording of the referendum that will be proposed by Cleveland Heights Citizens for Good Government. — Hannah Lebovits

According to a donation list that was leaked to Scene, Yasinow has donated $2,500 to this effort to keep politics out of the business of running government.

The donor list also includes four other city council members: mayor Carol Roe, councilwoman Mary Dunbar, councilman Michael Ungar and councilman Craig Cobb, the newly appointed councilman who recently served on the charter review commission.

In response to Scene’s request for comment, Roe and Ungar said they echo Yasinow’s comments. Roe and Dunbar, who donated $500 and $1,000, respectively, are up for re-election this year. Cobb is up for his ďŹ rst election. His contribution to the PAC was $200. Councilman Kahlil Seren is also up for re-election this year and is not listed as a contributor.

Several charter review commission members have donated to the PAC as well, including Katie Solender, Jack Newman, Vince Reddy and Mike Gaynier, who is also the deputy treasurer of the PAC. According to Yasinow, the money raised by the PAC will be

team as a subject matter expert. He thanked the city of Cleveland and its stakeholders for their cooperation and commitment to reform.

“There’s still a tremendous amount of work to be done, but there’s been a tremendous amount of progress,” he said. “It’s been an honor and a privilege to serve at the helm of a team that remains second to none. Many people have asked and will continue to ask: ‘Why are we doing this?’ ‘Isn’t this done yet?’ What I’ve said before is, we are not consigned to be as we always have been. Together we can make Cleveland a better place to live, a safer community with a police department that works better for everyone.”

Hassan Aden was celebrated by both Barge and Mayor Frank Jackson as a seasoned law enforcement professional who is intimate with the Cleveland settlement agreement. He has been deputy monitor since 2017.

assure residents that Wednesday’s announcement was merely a change in leadership. Nothing about the Consent Decree process would change.

“This change won’t slow anything down,” he said. “Quite the opposite. I think this has recharged the team. We’re going to get back to work as soon as we’re done with this press conference.”

Aden said the Consent Decree is now at a pivotal moment, where most of the “in-the-weeds” policy creation has been completed. The next steps will be training and execution. He referenced police officer training in both search and seizure policies and implicit bias.

“We’re keenly aware of the work still ahead of us,” he said. “There will be no interruption.”

While the monitoring team was initially given a five-year timeline and a $4.95 million budget, Aden could not say with certainty when the work would be completed. “When we’re in compliance,” he said, “we’re done.” — Allard

Kevin Keith, currently incarcerated in the Marion Correction Institute for a 1994 triple murder he has maintained he had nothing to do with, received an unexpected publicity boost last week when Kim Kardashian West shared a 2017 Scene cover story about his case across her social media platforms.

Kardashian West has recently been involved in helping to commute the life sentences of 17 first-time, nonviolent drug offenders. She has now put the bat signal up on Keith’s case to her tens of millions of followers.

“I heard about Kevin Keith’s case last year,” she wrote on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, “and the more I learn about it, the more I believe the world needs to hear what happened to him! He was on death row and came within days of execution before the governor of Ohio commuted his sentence to life without parole.”

Discovering an-ex KKK member in my childhood hometown of Solon

By Zachary Schwartz HERE ARE, APPARENTLY, LOGISTICS to consider when burning crosses, especially when burning them on seven separate black and Jewish families’ lawns in one night.

“You don’t just have crosses lying around, see,” says Tim, a 68-year-old man from Solon. “You got to build the crosses, put the wood together, keep off your fingerprints, get the chemicals … . You get chlorine and brake fluid, put them in a sock, mix them just right. If one guy screws up and the cross doesn’t burn, it makes everyone look stupid. So we had cross-burning classes for that.”

Tim knows because he was there that night in Florida in 1984, four years after he first pulled on the white hood and became a high-ranking Ku Klux Klan member. A year later, he would be indicted for plotting to blow up property owned by blacks and Jews, terroristic intentions in violation

of the Florida Anti-Paramilitary Act. Tim lights a cigarette. It’s 25 years later, in 2019. We’re sitting in his modest, white-painted home off Aurora Road. The flame illuminates his piercing blue eyes. A tuft of white hair shoots from his nose like a dragon’s breath.

I’ve known Tim for over a year now. Over time, we’ve had numerous conversations and built what could be described as a good rapport, an odd amiability considering that I’m a mixedrace Taiwanese-Jewish writer and he’s a former Klansman — though we are both from Solon. So, I get questions from friends. Two in particular: One, what is Tim like?

Tim is short-fused but authentic, likable in the way that I imagine Donald Trump is likable, even to his enemies.

Two, how does he feel about me?

“I don’t care about that,” he says in regards to my race. He tells me that he’s friends with Jews, blacks, Koreans, Mexicans, Arabs. He relishes his contradictions — bragging to me in the same breath that his daughter would never date a black man, but that her first play-boyfriend at 12 was black, and if the kid showed up at his door today, he’d gladly let him stay on the couch, but the kid is a drug addict, and, “Of course he is — he went back to his roots.”

So he contradicts himself, and is still quite racist. Every wisp of redemption that rises from his stories, he just as quickly extinguishes with the N-word or some other epithet.

“Listen,” he tells me. “I still have these views.

Solon will celebrate its bicentennial next year. One needs only to gaze at pictures from the 150th anniversary celebration in 1970 to see how much the leafy suburb has changed: The sea of white faces from 50 years ago has been replaced with a significant number of minorities, including an Asian-American population five times the percentage of Ohio’s overall average makeup.

It’s a demographic shift that parallels the changing face of America, a country that will likely tilt white-minority by the year 2050.

Ellis Island is synonymous with immigration, but that era pales in comparison to the immigration wave of the late 20th century after Congress abolished racial quotas. By the turn of the century, 85 percent of immigrants were non-Europeans.

They were Africans, Arabs, Indians, Hispanics, East Asians and others, including my Taiwanese mother, who stayed and bore children.

As a Solon High School student

in the early 2010s, there was a specific definition of the town in Urban Dictionary that we hunched over and laughed at in the computer lab: “Solon — a town (suburb of Cleveland) where the white majority tries to take credit for the sports achievements of the blacks and the academic achievements of the Asians.” We laughed because, in our eyes, it was true.

Nearly 30 percent of our graduating class was black, Asian, or Hispanic, and a good chunk of the white majority was Jewish. Of the 21 National Merit Semi-Finalists in the district in 2011, 18 were AsianAmerican, two were Jewish, one was black, and one was white.

Growing up in Solon, we never really felt a pushback on our presence. Political correctness was doctrinaire by then, and the liberal conception of a colorblind society hadn’t been challenged by the identity politics of both sides of the past few years. One had the idyllic impression that a town that was all white just a few decades prior would embrace its new immigrants. And for the most part — other than a few grumblings about Jews here, or blacks there, or too many Asians — it did.

The 2016 presidential election

brought to light the fact that some did not want to accept this new reality. These people were our family members, friends, coworkers and neighbors. And they included the exKlansman I discovered living right down the street, relatively speaking, from my childhood home in Solon.

Tim was born in Solon in 1951.

His schoolteachers included names legendary to any Solonite, including Miss Roxbury, the namesake of Roxbury Elementary. Growing up, Tim never heard his father, who employed black laborers, use the N-word, but his mother, who was more educated, did often. According to Tim, the town held the racial biases of most all-white suburbs in America — in sports, they didn’t want to play schools with blacks, and “you’d never hear about a white girl dating a black guy.” But ensconced in the suburbs, surrounded only by other whites, there was no appetite for more savage forms of racism.

In 1974, Tim moved to Pinellas County, near Tampa, Florida. He owned a few businesses, including a landscaping company and a topless bar in Madura Beach. For one landscaping job, he recalls

being outbid by a penny per acre by a contractor employing Cubans. “I couldn’t go any lower,” he grumbles now. He learned the government was subsidizing Cuban labor, which infuriated him, as he employed and advertised an all-white crew.

His other gripes — billboards that displayed relationships between black men and white women, the rise of affirmative action — are familiar refrains to any budding white nationalist today.

One night at his topless bar, he got to talking with Brad Russian, whom Tim recalls as a vicious racist, even by his standards. Brad was part of the United Klansmen of America, then considered to be the most violent and dangerous Ku Klux Klan organization in the country.

Tim was apprehensive of Brad, but more Klansmen showed up to talk to him. “We got guys like Brad that are a little more extreme, but we could use your help with the other stuff,” they told him. Tim claims that he didn’t believe in some of the stuff the Klan was doing, such as the indiscriminate assaults of blacks, but was more interested in the vigilante punishment of child molesters and drug dealers. “That’s what I was in charge of,” he says.

it was called, was as concerned with the policing of white families as it was in enacting racial terror. “There were rules for us,” Tim says. “We weren’t allowed to fight, we couldn’t get drunk or do drugs, we weren’t allowed to be alone with each other’s wives.” The Klan acted as a hotline of sorts: When a black or Jewish family moved into the neighborhood, white neighbors or the police would call the Klan to take action. “A lot of the time we were only allowed to burn a cross at a Jewish or black guy’s home,” he recalls. “But people like Brad Russian, he’d be the kind of guy to shoot the house up.”

Because he could hold meetings at his bar, Tim was, in just a few months, made a Kleagle, a highranking officer responsible for recruiting new members and enforcing Klan principles. In one particularly gruesome anecdote, Tim recalls the torture of an alleged white child molester. “We had quite a few sheriffs in the Klan,” Tim says.

“So they called us to take care of this guy.”

“I’m still proud of this one,” he says, a crooked grin spreading across his face. “He got caught with a 7-year-old boy. So we put our hoods on and got him down. I found the rustiest piece of barbed wire I could and stuck it into a garden hose. And then I shoved it up his ass. I pulled the hose out and the barbed wire stayed up there. He didn’t die, but he went to the hospital for many, many months. We never heard from him again.”

Every year, Tim would visit the Alabama property of Robert Shelton, the Grand Wizard and leader of the UKA. “It was like a gymnasium — we’d go up there, and that’s how we initiated people and did stuff like that,” Tim says. A few years earlier, in 1981, UKA members James Knowles and Henry Hays had brutally killed Michael Donald, one of the last documented lynchings in the United States. “They gathered us together and said, ‘We’re in big trouble guys,’” Tim recalls. “‘They’re tapping all the lines, they’re following everybody.’ And it went downhill from there.”

“It was dumb what those two guys did,” Tim says. “Hanging that boy. They didn’t have a reason to kill him. I never understood that senseless stuff. I’d ask them: ‘What’s the reason to hurt him?’ ‘Because he’s black.’ But he didn’t do anything.

So I’d tell them, ‘I’ll watch you but I don’t understand it.’”

On April 9, 1985, federal agents arrested four of Tim’s fellow Klansmen, including Brad Russian, and charged them with plotting to

blow up property owned by blacks and Jews. Tim was drinking at a bar. “The TV said they were looking for one more, and my picture showed up,” he says. “Everyone asked, ‘Should we call the cops?’ And someone said, ‘Would you want to call the cops on a Klansman?’ So they bought me a few drinks and I left.”

Later that day, Tim was arrested in his girlfriend’s neighborhood. At the jail, “they thought it’d be funny to put the Klansman in with all the blacks. ‘I think these honkeys are wanting us to whip your ass,’” his cellmates told him. “You have family out there, I have family out there,” Tim replied. “If I don’t come out looking as pretty as I did when I came in, someone’s going to get hurt.” His cellmates looked at each other, looked at him, then at each other again. They shrugged. A few minutes later, they were all playing cards.

The judge read the verdict: Not guilty. Tim sat back in relief. The wiretaps had saved him: He had been lucky, and reticent enough, to avoid being recorded. Every one of his codefendants had been convicted, but Tim would be going home.

After the trial, in 1990, Tim moved back up to Solon. The UKA gave him the names of other units to contact — he remembers some being in Elyria and Mansfield — but he had been discouraged by the lack of financial support during the trial from the UKA, which was itself collapsing under lawsuits and indictments.

Tim’s life was changing in other ways. In the early 1990s, he joined Alcoholics Anonymous and got sober. “We went to a retreat, there was a cabin, and I got roomed with a black guy, he was a Black Panther,” he recalls. “We looked each other and said, ‘Can you believe this?’ But we got to talking and became the best of friends.”

In the years following, Tim fraternized with other minorities. As a delivery driver, he was invited to eat dinner in the homes of Arab shop owners — “They’re good people,” he says — and worked for Koreans who he says he admired. He relentlessly pursued AA meetings and often found himself in areas of Cleveland where he would be the only white man present and, of course, the butt of jokes. “This guy used to be in the Klan,” they’d say. “Should we let him out alive?” He grinned back: He didn’t feel out of place.

It’s a better world that way. And you see that that’s proved by the way that prisons are.

It wasn’t until the election of 2016 that Tim saw mainstream validation of his current beliefs. “I love what Trump did,� he says. “And I see the results of it.� He crows about no longer seeing gas stations “full of Mexicans� — harbingers of lower wages, in his eyes, for working-class whites. “Trump is not letting them here,� he says. “And you know what?

They’re paying the white guys $18 an hour now.â€? “That’s what they should do with the Klan,â€? he says, “They need to make sure whites are working their jobs. Don’t let them get cut out because of someone else’s race or [afďŹ rmative action]. You just can’t do it with a hood and all that stuff, because right away it’s gonna be a big ďŹ ght if someone sees that.â€?

When I bring up Solon, a diverse place that’s friendly enough, he demurs. “You go down Aurora Road, down to places like Mantua,� he says. “Everyone says, ‘Hey, how you doing?’ to each other. Everyone knows each other. You go to a place like Solon, there’s so many different races there ... everyone’s always in a rush, no one wants to say, ‘Hey.’ It’s not a community. You lose something when you have everyone together like that.�

Tim isn’t totally wrong about Solon. My parents and their friends, at least when I was growing up, frequently complained about Solon’s scant neighborliness. The town’s lack of community is a perennial complaint in its local journalism.

And I know how some AsianAmerican families can be inclined to stick to themselves. Regardless, the town continues to diversify: In 2017, Solon city council approved Solon’s ďŹ rst mosque, to the chagrin of over

1,300 residents who signed a petition against it. “I think it really challenged some of the Solon residents at ďŹ rst,â€? says Jeffrey Aker, a former Solon High School teacher who taught from 1978 to 2014, of the town’s changing diversity. “But as younger couples moved in, it was seen as a much more positive thing to have your kids, whatever race they are, exposed to different people.â€?

My parents were one of those couples. They worried that on the farwestside of Cleveland — where I had begun to ďŹ eld questions asking why the Jews killed Jesus, or was laughed at for the way my lunch smelled — I would be ostracized or alienated. We moved to Solon when I was 10.

When I think of growing up in Solon, I think of mild selfsegregation, especially at middle school lunch tables: There were the rich whites, the poor whites, the cool Asians, the nerdy Asians, the Jews, the blacks, and so forth. But as we trickled into high school, we mingled and bonded in groups like marching band, Model United Nations, and track team. The breadth of perspective I gained from my friends and all the families — Punjabi Indian, single-parent black, Jewish, chaotic latchkey homes, Filipino, well-off Republicans — who welcomed us into their homes proved invaluable as I left Solon and entered the real world.

It’s a beautiful summer day and we’re watching Tim’s granddaughters play softball. A few black and brown kids are on the team, and their parents sit in the bleachers and cheer them on.

A parade of Tim’s family members arrive to greet him — sons, daughters, ex-wives, children-in-law, freshly born babies. He gestures toward his granddaughter. “She don’t know nothing about the Klan stuff,â€? he says. “None of my kids are racist,â€? he tells me. A hint of pride surfaces in his voice, as if he’s pleasantly surprised. “I ‌ guess I’m more racist than most people, but none of them are. They were brought up around AA people, they had different friends in the school, so they got to meet all kinds of people, every color.â€? He reects for a while. “That’s probably what did it.â€?

His granddaughter steps up to bat. Tim looks at her, then at me, then at her again. He smiles. “World’s changed a lot,� he says.

Asian Lantern Festival Taking over parks and zoos across the country, the traveling Asian Lantern Festival shows off thousands of colorful handmade paper lanterns in open, green spaces. This year’s Cleveland edition, which runs through July 28 at the Metroparks Zoo, brings 40 brand new light-up displays. The festival also includes authentic bites from local spots Li Wah, King Wah and Thai Thai, an interactive zone, open-air market and live performances.

ART BEAUTIFUL MESS Liz Maugans at HEDGE Gallery

THERE HASN’T BEEN, IN RECENT memory, an exhibition title more fitting than Beautiful Mess, within which artist Liz Maugans delivers a dynamic collection of serene chaos.

At the HEDGE Gallery entrance, there’s a sculpture of a yellow lighthouse, a cardboard beacon that hopes to guide us safely into the harbor of Maugans’ mind. A sign that shouts “rough road” keeps us in check as we examine the contents.

Many of the works are dedicated to the artist’s late mother, Fern, whose presence is most definitely felt within the space, not just because of the many live fern plants placed about the gallery, but also because of the pieces themselves. The achingly beautiful “Mother (Fern)” is an homage to the many-layered woman pushing forward from the background and spilling out from the frame with delicate fronds, as if to embrace whomever stands before it.

“The Last Handhold” is another collage that spills out from its frame.

Four sets of hands are clenched in what could be perceived as prayer, with ghostlike lines connecting them.

Yellow, gray, white and peach tears might have us cascading toward the floor or else lead us upward into infinity.

The nautical theme is deep with “Double Lighthouse.” Along with waves, ropes, hands and anchors, the lighthouse theme repeats often throughout the exhibition. Maugans displays this screen print and print media collage with a neon and Plexiglas sign that reads “Beautiful Mess” and furthers the installation with ferns.

Speaking of installations, how the print collages are presented is new to our eyes. The artworks are floated within wooden frames atop a backsplash of color painted directly onto the gallery wall. It is a marvelous installation that busts open the seams of how to present two-dimensional work.

“Same Old” is one of these pieces.

Paired with “Midlife Rodeo,” a series of ceramic tablets that Maugans created weekly, “Same Old” becomes bolder than if it were in a conventional frame. The shapes within this vast support resemble stepping stones

This piece tells the story of getting older, and society dictating that perhaps it’s best to cover ourselves up. Our less-thantaut bodies and imperfections are no longer accepted.

favorite painting, “Guernica” by Pablo Picasso. The eye travels throughout this work so much that we need to take a moment to get our bearings.

“To everyone who sees this,” states Maugans about “Girl-nica,” “those that are anchors and lighthouses, the ones that parachute into lives of others, the people holding the rope or the others barely hanging on, this work was for

me, the (optical) illusion of both me as a girl and now as an older woman.

This work is about how we clutch our hands together, praying we see another day, another moment that can be shared with those that we love.”

One of the quieter works is “Audra Ascending.” It’s a tall and quiet piece, with clouds and tears evaporating from the multifaceted vessels below.

Although all of the works are contemplative, “Audra Ascending” is particularly moving with its audible silence. We were also fond of the grouping of four rope prints that are sumptuous, dark and almost gothic.

Beautiful Mess has Maugans’ powerful visual lexicon at the helm, guiding us through loss, laughter and liability for our past and future.

We’ve gone back to see this exhibition several times and there are details that surprise us each time — much like life.

STAGE A GLORIOUSLY TOXIC AFFAIR Blank Canvas re-imagines B-movie nostalgia with Toxic Avenger

IN PERHAPS BLANK CANVAS’ BEST production so far in its current season, the wildly funny and wholeheartedly campy Toxic Avenger has crawled out of the contaminated contents of B-movie bliss and onto Cleveland’s theater scene.

Based on the Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz-helmed flick that rode the line between superhero parody and shoddy exploitation, this relatively new musical adaptation written by David Bryan and Joe DiPietro has already received some acclaim for following the tone of the film while dialing up every aspect of it to 11.

The play takes some creative liberties with its source material as Melvin Ferd the Third (Pat Miller), a scrawny, foolhardy nerd, faces an uphill battle against corrupt mayor Babs Belgoody (Leslie Andrews), as he confronts the overwhelming pollution in his quiet New Jersey town. In an attempt to impress his crush Sarah (Madeline Krucek), a ditzy blind librarian, he gets hold of the city records and threatens to expose the mayor. Dumped into toxic waste by accident in response to his brashness, Melvin arises from the waste a new man ... or in this case, mutant. Now renamed the Toxic Avenger (Patrick Ciamacco), and affectionately nicknamed Toxie by Sarah and the town, he ensures the fight for a cleaner town then becomes a battle of wits, torn appendages, broken promises and deception.

The crew at Blank Canvas is aware of the zaniness of the script and follows it with vigor and an infectious energy. With its previous productions including adaptations of Debbie Does Dallas and a Texas Chainsaw Massacre musical, the theater staff thrives when dealing with and bringing life to schlocky yet charming concepts, and Toxic Avenger is no exception. Director Molly Claassen has embraced the cheese of the source material and gives her audience something that manages to balance between cartoonish, gory, hilarious and racy without being overtly offensive — save to those hailing from New Jersey. Apologies in advance.

The prosthetics and makeup, while not on the level of the film or other stage adaptations, don’t hinder his performance or singing. A frequent Blank Canvas player, Andrews plays Melvin’s mother as well as the aforementioned mayor, and — without spoiling one of the high points of the show — let’s just say Andrews does an amazing job balancing these characters. She projects her voice in numbers like “Evil Is Hot” and “Jersey Girl” with an unabashed roar.

protagonist, and Ciamacco’s menacing bellows are complemented by some impressive voice alteration by sound designer Richard B. Ingraham.

Krucek possesses an incredible sense of comedic timing in her bumbling blind antics, as well as a wonderful singing voice in numbers like “My Big French Boyfriend,” and when paired with Ciamacco in “Hot

Miller works well as the precocious yet cartoonish dweeb, in the same vein as a character like SpongeBob SquarePants, and is on stage long enough to not have his childish antics be outwardly abrasive.

The bit players of the production, plainly credited as White Dude and Black Dudette (Noah Hrbek and Sydney Smith, respectively), wear many hats as Sarah’s valley girl-

esque friends, the town bullies, prostitutes, a folk singer and a redneck hunter pair, just to name a few. Both of them impress with their ability to quickly dive into each role with professional grace and lightning-fast costume changes, and both provide some great backup vocals to the songs. They also supply many laughs with their exaggerated mannerisms.

The set — also designed by Ciamacco — makes the most of the venue, bridging steps amongst heaps of trash and recyclables along a junkyard backdrop overlooking a luminous Jersey skyline. The space utilizes the central drum of toxic waste as an additional stage entrance rather than a simple hole in the floor, which makes for some very cinematic moments, especially in Toxic Avenger’s reveal.

Speaking of, those wearing dressy clothes to the show should be cautioned about the “splatter zone,” which is within range of the various liquids spurting out of various props.

The liquids aren’t the only interactive part, as the show becomes quite collaborative with its audience, breaking the ever-elusive fourth wall for comedic effect at almost every turn. Save for jokes at the expense of Sarah’s blindness, the most memorable instances come from this self-awareness.

As far as structure is concerned, there are a lot of plates spinning in this script. Between Toxie’s misadventures, his mother’s apparent rivalry with the mayor, and Sarah’s lust for fame and fortune with her memoir, there are a lot of transitions that the crew at Blank Canvas try to make as seamlessly as possible, but there are some unavoidable and jarring tonal shifts throughout.

Some are even addressed as jokes in the production.

Those looking for some left-of-thedial laughs will find that missing out on this sidesplitting romp would be hazardous to their health. Almost as hazardous as polluting in front of ol’ Toxie if you prefer your arm to remain in its socket.

EAT BEWARE, THOSE WHO ENTER For bright spots at Palazzo, look at the … uh … well …

LIKE THAT ONE GUY ON YELP, I really wanted to like Palazzo.

I have been captivated by the curious, but vacant, building throughout my entire tenure as a restaurant critic. Vacillating between dilapidated eyesore and Lilliputian castle, depending on the light, the fieldstone-clad restaurant held so much history, intrigue and promise that all one could do is hope that some intrepid chef would rescue it before it was too late.

The last restaurant to occupy the structure closed in 2002, the very year that I began covering food in Cleveland. But that didn’t prevent me from digging into its past. Oddly enough, the building used to reside on the opposite side of the road, until the land beneath its foundation was appropriated for a new rapid transit station. On both sides of the street, proprietress Palmina DiFilippo lured hungry diners with her fresh-baked breads, steamy cups of minestrone and mile-high lasagne al forno, all lovingly made from scratch in the back of the house.

Palmina’s, as the popular redsauce joint was called, rolled merrily along until about 1993, when the grandchildren of the original owner took possession, reworked the interior and unveiled Palazzo, a ritzy Italian restaurant. Through ups and downs, sisters Carla and Gilda graciously operated the “palace” for about a decade, leaving behind many of the restaurant’s iconic fixtures for the next caretaker of the quirky spot.

That white knight would not materialize for another 17 years, when Rafael Zaloshnja purchased the building, thus sparing it from the wrecking ball. The Albanianborn chef had long been an admirer of the structure and dreamt about opening a restaurant of his own in that very spot. That’s precisely what occurred in late May when Palazzo, an upscale Italian eatery, opened its doors.

While I am absolutely thrilled to see the building full of life, I am less enthusiastic about the unprofessional service, uneven food and laundry list of faux pas that we experienced over the course of two meals and a

boatload of cash.

Our first contact with an employee, apart from the host, took place literally seconds after taking our seats, when a server ran up to the table just long enough to announce that the special of the day was some type of fish. She was gone in a flash, without so much as a greeting, a drink order or an offer of bread. Throughout the entire meal, she dashed about the dining

return visit to the kitchen for some attention.

High notes include an appetizer of crispy cheese-stuffed artichoke hearts ($14) in a truffle-scented cream sauce, hot and tasty wedding soup ($7), a Margherita pizza ($14) with an excellent crust, and a pair of pastas, neither of which are made in house. The bucatini Bolognese ($22) featured noodles from Flour Pasta Company and

room as though her hair was aflame, pausing just long enough to drop off a dish, before racing away to what I can only imagine was a life-or-death emergency out of our line of sight.

We ordered a nice bottle of Barolo ($60) and it arrived very warm to the touch, as if stored near a pizza oven or on the surface of the sun. That bread never did arrive, so we flagged down a busser, who promised to see to it. When it finally appeared, well into the meal, it did so in the form of a large, unsliced loaf, requiring a

a straightforward meat sauce, while the lobster ravioli ($24) came straight from Ohio City Pasta and was gilded with large shrimp and a blush cream sauce. Freshly grated cheese had to be requested and half orders are not available.

Low notes include a bowl of steamed mussels ($11) with bivalves the size of a fingernail, a bowl of shrimp bisque ($9) that was essentially truffle oil-infused cream and a Caesar salad ($7) that did not resemble those of the diners all

around me, given that it had waited somewhere warm until it wilted.

Toss-ups range from a prosciuttofree veal saltimbocca ($28) with limp asparagus and undercooked potatoes to an impressive-looking grilled pork chop ($22) served atop a melange of tepid vegetables.

Those seated in the dining room have an unobstructed view of a salad and dessert station that is positioned on this side of the kitchen door. We watched as the staffer sliced open plastic-wrapped balls of commercial mozzarella, grabbed berries straight from plastic clamshells, and squeezed grocery store chocolate sauce from a plastic bottle. Nearby, a server cleared every last plate from a couple’s table except for the woman’s entree, while over there, a manager tugged on the jacket of a server in the midst of discussing specials just to say that a diner requested his check.

There’s always room for another great Italian restaurant, especially in this neighborhood. Here’s hoping that Palazzo will become that place.

SHENG LONG YU, OWNER of Shinto Japanese Steakhouse in Strongsville and Kenko in University Circle and Kent, is just days away from opening his fourth restaurant.

When it opens this week in the former home of Koko Cafe in Asia Town, Dagu Rice Noodle (3710 Payne Ave.) will be one of the first locations of that international sensation in the U.S. Dagu Rice Noodle has hundreds of locations throughout China, where the Shanghai-based restaurant began, a handful in Canada, and only one or two in the States. The house specialty is “crossing the bridge noodles,” a noodle soupbased meal that is similar, but not identical, to hot pot.

The star of the show, not surprisingly, are the rice noodles, which come from Dagu’s own facility in China. Crocks of still-boiling broth are delivered to the table in earthenware bowls that are heated to 300 degrees Fahrenheit, so even after the noodles and garnishes are introduced, the soup remains hot.

“In our culture, soup is supposed to be served boiling hot,” explains Yu. Broths are pork or vegetable based, spicy or not spicy, and served alongside those noodles and add-ons like quail eggs, tofu skin, bamboo shoots, kimchi, preserved vegetables, corn, Spam, beef, shrimp and various

sauces and pastes. While “crossing the bridge” often refers to a romantic fable about a man and wife, it also represents the movement of food to bowl while eating.

Dagu shops also serve a selection of street food-style appetizers like Sichuan cucumbers, spicy duck tongue, braised lotus root, crispy chicken and sticky rice balls.

To drink, there are fruit teas and cheese teas, which might soon edge out bubble tea as the next hot beverage trend. Those who adore it swear it tastes better than it sounds, thanks to its sweet flavor, silky texture and frothy cream cheesebased topping.

Yu was first introduced to the concept in Canada, where Dagu is spreading like wildfire.

“The last time I went to Canada, I went to one of the stores and thought, ‘This is great stuff. Why not bring it to Cleveland?’” notes Yu. “If there’s one thing that Cleveland needs, especially when it comes to noodle soup, it is diversity.”

Yu sent his main crew over to Shanghai to train at an existing Dagu shop that sees 800 customers in a day. He doesn’t expect to handle crowds that large at this 30-seat spot, but he does expect it to be busy.

“First of all, it’s between CSU and Case, and both have a lot of Asian population,” explains Yu. “Number two, Chinatown already has a decent

Yu doesn’t plan to stop at just one, he says, noting that future shops are planned for Northeast Ohio, Columbus and Pittsburgh.

Meadville, PA-Based Voodoo Brewery to Open Taproom in Cleveland Heights When it opens this fall in Cleveland Heights, Voodoo Brewery will offer a unique twist to the local beer brewing scene. Despite the moniker, the business actually will not brew any beer, but instead will function as a satellite taproom for the Meadville, Pennsylvaniabased brewery of the same name.

The locally owned franchise will be operated by partners Don Trivisonno and Cathy Zalocki.

“We discussed opening a brewery and eventually said, why reinvent the wheel,” Trivisonno explains. “I’m a beer nerd, I’ve brewed for some

years, and I ran a couple different retail and restaurant beer programs.

I know just from myself and my friends the amount of people who travel out to get their beers, so it makes sense to bring it to them right in their own neighborhood.”

Since launching in 2005, Voodoo has added Pennsylvania locations in Erie, Homestead, Grove City, Lancaster and State College. The franchise arm of the business is new,

with upcoming pubs in Washington, D.C. and Cleveland Heights being early adopters. Each is unique in look, feel and location, but all are bound together by the diverse but consistent roster of ales and lagers brewed at the production facility in Western PA. “The model is all about controlling the product in the absolute best way at our brewery back home,” says Jake Voelker,

chief operating officer. “I can’t tell you the amount of people who have been asking us over the years to do something here. I’m a little bit of a data nerd, and if you pull customer data from our Meadville and Erie pubs to see where they’re coming from, I can tell that we have a loyal following here already.”

Those folks invariably are fans of the brewery’s higher-ABV offerings like Good Vibes IPA, Quadfather Belgian quadrupel and Cowbell double chocolate imperial stout.

Those core beers and about a dozen others will be on tap at the new Cleveland Height location. Formerly home to Bill’s Dry Cleaning, the 3,000-square-foot double storefront (2279 Lee Rd.) has been gutted to the original shell, a wall separating the two spaces has been removed and a beam has been added to open up the entire space. A new kitchen and restrooms are being installed.

In addition to the house beer, Voodoo will offer wine, cider, cocktails and pub grub like pretzels, pizzas and tacos. A small patio will be added out back.

Look for Voodoo Brewery to open in the next few months.

Local guitar hero Neil Zaza teams up with Verb Ballets

LOCALLY BASED VERB BALLETS has commissioned the Adagio Reimagined Project with local rock guitarist Neil Zaza. The Adagio Reimagined Project will honor the legacy of Heinz Poll, a German-born dancer who developed Ohio Ballet into one of America’s most respected chamber dance troupes, while presenting a “bold new reinterpretation of the work.”

This week, the company will remount Poll’s Adagio for Two Dancers.

The idea for the project came about when festival director Jane Startzman heard Zaza performing a musical interpretation of Albinoni’s Adagio in G Minor at the Akron Civic Theatre. She found the reconstructed score breathtaking and was reminded of her time dancing Poll’s Adagio for Two Dancers. Startzman is the regisseur for the work and brought together Zaza and the producing artistic director of Verb Ballets, Dr. Margaret Carlson, to bring the work and music back to

the stage.

“This past October, I did this orchestral project, One Dark Night, at the Akron Civic, and it went really great,” explains Zaza in a phone interview. “We do a few pieces that piqued the interest of Jane [Startzman]. She said, ‘Have you ever thought that people could dance to your music?’ She asked if I would be interested in working with them, and I said, ‘Of course.’”

Choreographer Sabatino Verlezza will create the new work to Zaza’s rock score of Albinoni’s Adagio in G Minor. A soloist with the May O’Donnell Dance Company, Verlezza has danced with many other prominent artists. He served as co-artistic director/choreographer of Dancing Wheels and founder/artistic director of Verlezza Dance.

“The piece is one that I’ve done before,” says Zaza. “It’s one of my favorite pieces. We had a meeting with the choreographer. It’s so weird that a rock guy like me is meeting with a choreographer for a concept meeting. I’m excited.”

Verb Ballets is the company with the largest repository of Poll’s works and the second company to ever perform the original duet (since the days Ohio Ballet associate artistic director Richard Dickinson danced it under Poll) and is helping with the restaging of the work. The Adagio Reimagined Project will be featured on the program at the Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival that takes place on Friday and Saturday at Forest Lodge Park in Akron.

“I just said no tights and no dancing, but I’m in, and I’ll be there performing with them,” says Zaza. “They’re doing the standard dance that Heinz Poll had choreographed. Immediately after, it goes into this heavy rock, big-drum version. They call it a reimagined version, so that’s why there’s choreography for it. It should be really cool.”

Zaza also thinks the rock element will widen the piece’s appeal.

“Sometimes, you think the

interest level will just be bluehaired old ladies, but when you add a modern-day energy and element, it then stretches across different demographics. I saw that with One Dark Night, and I think we’ll see that at the Heinz Poll summer dance show.”

The event will represent the first of what Zaza hopes is many collaborations with Verb Ballets.

They’ll perform with him when he restages One Dark Night in the fall.

“That’ll be great because we have some really dark pieces, and that’ll add to the production of it, and there’s something else coming next year that is bigger than anything I’ve done yet,” he says. “I can’t announce the details yet, but Verb Ballets will be involved. This upcoming festival will be the first step in our collaborative life.”

Snail Mail/Sasami: Singer-guitarist Lindsey Jordan formed the indie slowcore band Snail Mail when she was just 16. The group has slowly picked up steam. In the wake of the band’s last release, the Liz Phair-meets-the Breeders EP Habit, Jordan has inked a deal with Matador Records. She’s been hard at work on that album, which will come out later this year. “We’ve spent an insane amount of time working on it in the studio,” she says. “We had real resources to do this one. It’s a proper release, and the songs are more mature. They’re more guitar-oriented. I spent a lot of time listening to inspiring guitar-type records and that’s what I’ve been more into lately. There’s a lot of growth. It feels like I’m a completely different person. I’ve been writing during transitional times in my life because I just graduated and I’ve been doing all

Air Supply: Air Supply’s pop ballad “Lost in Love” had been a hit in Australia in 1978 and began to break in America in 1980.

Legendary record maestro Clive Davis had heard the Australian version and got in touch with the band’s record company — without the band being aware of it — to license the track for other markets. To do that, I had to learn guitar first.”

ALBUM TIME: After issuing a series of EPs, Yanya signed a record deal and says the folks at the label immediately told her it was “album time.”

“It was very difficult to write the songs and be pushing live stuff and promo,” she says. “My life had gone from music being something like a side thing to the only thing I was doing. I was just like, ‘What?!’ It had become my job. I had never seen it like that before. I had never seen music as working, but now I was working.” She recorded the album,

SAVAGE LOVE FINGERING IT OUT

by Dan Savage I’m a 36-year-old straight guy, happily married for more than 10 years, and a longtime reader.

My wife and I are monogamous.

We’re good communicators, well matched in terms of libido, and slightly kinky (light bondage, Dom/ sub play in the bedroom). For the last few months, I’ve been thinking about trying prostate play, and I have a couple of questions. A lot of bloggers and other writers in the sex-advice complex tout the health benefits of regular prostate massage, but I haven’t found any academic research to back up some of the lofty claims that are being made. Does prostate massage reduce the risk of prostate cancer and prostatitis?

Now the relationship question: I’ve brought partnered prostate play up with my wife, and it’s a hard pass for her. Hygiene is an issue, but that’s easy to take care of (shower, enema, gloves, towels on the bed, etc.). The other part deals with our power dynamics. Typically, I’m the Dom, and, based on the limited conversations we’ve had about this, there is something about penetrating me that she finds deeply uncomfortable. What should I do?

How do I frame this conversation in a way that may make her more comfortable and gets her finger(s) in my ass? We’ve shared so much — she’s an incredible partner who has helped me realize so many of my fantasies, and I’d like her to be a part of this one, too.

— Partner Protests Prostate Play If there were any legit studies out there that documented the health benefits of regular prostate massage, PPPP, Richard Wassersug, Ph.D, would know about it. Wassersug is a research scientist at the University of British Columbia, where he studies ways to help prostate cancer patients manage the side effects of their treatments.

“I’d like to believe that I’m knowledgeable on this topic,” Wassersug said, “[but] I checked PubMed to see if I’d missed anything in the relevant and recent peer-reviewed medical literature. As I expected, there are no objective data supporting the claim that ‘regular prostate

massage’ reduces the risk of prostate cancer and prostatitis.

[And while] prostate massage can be used to express prostatic fluid for diagnostic purposes, that’s not the same as using it for the treatment of any prostatic diseases.”

But that doesn’t mean that prostate massage isn’t beneficial; absence of evidence, as they say, isn’t evidence of absence.

“We [just] don’t know,” said Wassersug, and finding out “would, in fact, take a very large sample and many years to collect enough data to provide a definitive answer.”

But there definitely is something you can do right now to decrease your risk of prostate cancer, PPPP: Two large studies found that men who ejaculate frequently — more than 21 times per month — are roughly 35 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer than men who blow fewer loads. So if sticking things up your butt makes you come more often, then science says sticking things up your butt will reduce your risk of prostate cancer.

Researchers don’t know exactly why coming a lot may reduce a man’s risk for prostate cancer.

There’s no data to support one frequently mentioned theory — that ejaculation may flush out “irritating or harmful substances” that could be gathering in the prostate along with the fluids that make up roughly 30 percent of a man’s seminal fluids — so, again, more research is needed.

And until those studies are done, men and other prostate-having people should err on the side of ejaculating as often as (safely and consensually) possible.

As for convincing your otherwise submissive wife to finger your ass, PPPP, you could search for “power bottoms” on the gay section of Pornhub — assuming your wife enjoys gay porn — and familiarize her with the concept of dominant penetratees. You could also add female condoms to your list of hygiene hacks — put one of these trash-can liners in your ass, and the only thing your wife will get on her fingers is lube. But if

anal play is a hard no for the wife, you’ll have to enjoy anal play solo.

But he does on occasion send little “thinking of you” texts. So am I able to ghost him? Do I owe him a conversation about wants and needs? I’d like to be friends — I am part of a small kinky community, I’m friends with some of his fuck buddies, and I’m going to run into him again — but this isn’t a time in his life when he should be worrying about the feelings of a now-and-then spanking partner.

— Ghosting Has Obvious Shortcomings That Suck You’ve constructed a false choice for yourself, GHOSTS:

either initiate a conversation about your wants and needs or ghost him. But there’s no need for a wants-and-needs convo, as you’ve already had that conversation (more than once) and his don’t align with yours. So instead of disappearing on him, you can simply respond to his “thinking of you” texts with short, thoughtful, compassionate texts of your own. (“Thinking of you, too, especially at this difficult time.”) The odds that he’ll want to meet up in the next few months seem slim, and you can always claim a scheduling conflict if he should ask to get together.

Being friendly is the trick to remaining friends after a casual sexual arrangement ends. Kindly acknowledging someone’s texts — or greeting someone in public — doesn’t obligate you to sleep with (or submit to) them again.

And while in most cases I would advise a person to be direct … in this case, I think you should simply step back. Calling him to say, “Hey, I know your mom has cancer and is dying, but I needed to tell you I’m not interested in fucking around anymore, okay?” will make you seem self-involved, thoughtless, and uncaring — you know, not the kind of person someone wants to remain friends with after a casual sexual arrangement ends.

Now, if you were this man’s primary partner, GHOSTS, and you’d been thinking about ending the relationship before he got the news about his mother, I would encourage you to wait a few months and love and support him through this process. (Unless the relationship was abusive, of course, which this one wasn’t.)

But you’re just a FWB — a “friend with bruises,” in your case — and this man has other friends and lovers around him, people whose support he can rely on during this difficult time.
