UPFRONT RONALD PHILLIPS IS SCHEDULED TO BE EXECUTED BY THE STATE IN TWO WEEKS

THIS WEEK

RONALD PHILLIPS, AN OHIO inmate on death row since 1993, is set to face his sentence July 26.

His death would be the first Ohio execution in more than three years.

Phillips was convicted of raping and murdering his girlfriend’s 3-year-old daughter in Akron more than 20 years ago. This is his third 2017 execution date, as the state has continued to postpone the execution amid ongoing litigation.

Previous attempts were delayed by a federal judge’s ruling that deemed the Ohio lethal injection drug too risky. This drug, midazolam, caused problems in executions in Ohio, Arizona and Arkansas, where inmates appeared to be gasping for breath and suffering for more than 20 minutes before dying.

However, last month a federal appeals court approved Ohio’s use of the sedative midazolam in an 8-6 ruling. The court argued that attorneys representing death row inmates failed to prove that the drug causes serious pain. Even so, Phillips’ attorney Tim Sweeney intends to fight the sentence.

“We’re going to continue to fight as vigorously as we can to see that this execution does not go forward,” Sweeney told the Associated Press.

In its 8-6 vote, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit returns to Ohio its right to execute prisoners with a controversial three-drug process that includes midazolam. The protocol had been ruled unconstitutional in January, part of a years-long back-and-forth in the courts over this matter.

Phillips is expected to try his hand with the U.S. Supreme Court between now and July 26. His case is similar to other high-profi le

— the state executed Dennis McGuire. He gasped and snorted audibly and took more than 15 minutes to die once the drugs were injected, once again placing scrutiny on how Ohio was carrying out its executions.

“Having thus pursued a lengthy, multi-front campaign for compelled secrecy premised on their need to acquire pentobarbital and/or sodium thiopental, [state leaders] have now made clear that they didn’t mean anything they said,” Phillips’ attorneys argued in his appeals case. One of his primary arguments has been that the known properties of midazolam and the state’s history make it so that executions cannot be carried out in a constitutional manner. “There are no safeguards —training, IVs, etc.

— that can cure this fundamental problem.” — Julie Ciotola, Eric Sandy executions in other states in recent years, though generally speaking, the fi nal word on the matter has often swung in favor of states’ desires to continue executions.

When Ohio announced last fall that it would return to its threedrug “cocktail,” as it’s so often described, observers were taken aback — and not without case. The recent history of state executions in Ohio is a rather circuitous one.

For years, Ohio had used a blend of three drugs to execute death row inmates and, for years, reports showed that the drug combination frequently caused painful, prolonged deaths. The Eighth Amendment was often cited in critiques, along with Ohio Revised Code mandates that execution protocols “quickly and painlessly cause death.”

In 2009, executioners spent two hours prodding and stabbing Romell Broom with needles.

They could not find a vein, and the execution was called off. (“I tried to assist them by helping to tie my own arm,” Broom later recounted.) The event prompted some governmental soul-searching, and the state decided to abandon its three-drug mixture in favor of a single barbiturate, like pentobarbital or sodium thiopental.

The state insisted that complete secrecy was needed to obtain those drugs and that the public was to be shut out of all information on the matter of lethal injection protocol.

State lawmakers agreed.

public fountain). Carnegie favors a banquet hall as an anchor space and a bevy of high-end residential amenities, most of which are in short supply among the city’s aging housing stock.

Note that former mayor Ed FitzGerald is working as the economic development adviser for Carnegie. FitzGerald was running the city when the Lakewood Hospital Association unveiled the Vision for Tomorrow plan, which marked the hospital as a center of excellence in four specialties while stripping the facility of, for example, its trauma and pediatric programs. That moment in Lakewood Hospital history is vital in understanding how the LHA and the city got to the point of selling off the hospital and moving forward with this redevelopment plan.

The city’s Architectural Board of Review and Planning Commission will host a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. July 25 at City Hall to dig into these proposals on a more in-depth level. No decision will be made until later this year. — Sandy

The organization of 43 (now 39) regional faith groups and churches has opposed the deal from the start, taking a vocal stance as negotiations worked their way through public meetings.

The GCC even went on to play a pivotal role in gathering signatures to place the city ordinance on the ballot as a voter referendum.

City council later rejected those signatures on questionable grounds, which are being presently litigated. (The city even sued itself, showing how tightly this Gordian knot is tied.)

With no voting quorum, there’s no action on the horizon for Nexus’ Ohio-Michigan pipeline plans. In all, $50 billion in infrastructure projects around the U.S. hangs in limbo. Nexus, the 255-mile natural gas pipeline, has been the subject of much controversy, including an ongoing civil lawsuit and protests across Northeast Ohio.

Part of the lawsuit requests an injunction against Nexus obtaining a certificate from FERC. “Every day that goes by there’s another variable that influences the pipeline,” Guilford Township resident Jon Strong told Scene earlier this year. “The whole premise is falling apart.” The premise has always been that Nexus is good for Ohio energy consumers, which, by almost any account, it isn’t. He was speaking at the time about how this FERC limbo allowed consumers to watch a competitor pipeline drop its prices, showing how market forces are already moving on without Nexus.

President Donald Trump nominated another FERC commissioner: Richard Glick, the general counsel of the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. He joins two other commissioner nominees awaiting approval. A looming Senate vote promises a major showdown on U.S. energy policy. — Sandy

As the Tribe enters the All-Star break, a conversation with Jason Kipnis on the team’s struggles, his struggles, and how they can get back to the World Series

HEY, HAVE YOU HEARD JASON KIPNIS IS FROM CHICAGO? “If you watched any of the [World Series] games last year, they must have said it a hundred times,” Kipnis says over lunch at Banter in Detroit Shoreway one recent June afternoon.

“They said it every 20 minutes.”

He’s explaining the origins of “Let’s Do This, Cleveland,” his firstperson piece published by The Player’s Tribune back on April 3, the day the reigning American League champions began the 2017 season in Texas with an 8-5 win.

Part World Series exegesis — including his thoughts on blowing a 3-1 lead, the rain delay, and a snapshot of his mental and physical state in the immediate aftermath of Game 7 when he returned to his offseason home in Chicago — and part call to arms, the essay hewed a nimble tightrope of looking back and looking forward, of imploring Cleveland to get behind the team without sounding like a direct complaint about how many butts are or are not in the seats.

“I feel like this team is really just getting started,” it read. “This is a new season. A new team. And, to be honest … we’re a better team this year

than we were last year. I’m hoping all of Cleveland feels the same way, and is ready to make a run at history this year … starting today. Don’t wait until September, or the playoffs. Come along for the ride from the very beginning.

I promise you … if we do what I think we can do this season, it will be all the more sweet to look back on and tell your grandkids about if you were a part of this thing from Day One. “I had that story to tell, and I’m happy that in this instance people got a look behind the scenes,” Kipnis says of the result of what he described as a pretty organic process: He sat down and talked to a writer, the writer put it to paper, and Kipnis edited it when he was done. “I did take a bunch of stuff out though. [The writer] had a bunch of ‘bros’ and ‘dudes’ in there. I was like, ‘I’m not [Nick] Swisher. I don’t talk like that.’”

Attendance has been a hobbyhorse

for otherwise baseball-illiterate local sports talk radio hosts and fans in recent years, especially during last season’s sprint to October. It’s a touchy subject for a variety of reasons, not least when a player on a multi-million dollar contract addresses it. “It’s definitely a fine line,” Kipnis says. “If you remember the Chris Perez era, he was, uh, a little more blunt that I was.

But we get it; we know it’s a lot easier for guys making millions of dollars to, say, go spend 40 bucks on tickets, but we also understand it’s more fun for everyone if everyone’s there.”

There were, of course, some anemic turnstile receipts during 2016 before the packed-house playoff games that brought back memories of the 455-game sellout streak. The kind when you could hear each and every heckle from the furthest corners of the stadium, the kind when you could hear yourself breathe.

“I actually … Well,” Kipnis says before standing up from the table, taking a step back and crouching slightly like he’s leading off first base.

“There was a game last year, one of those with like 8,000 people or less or whatever. And I was leading off

first and I could actually hear Tom Hamilton on the radio echoing from the speakers somewhere. And I hear, ‘Kipnis has a biiiig lead at first.’ And I look down and I take a step back toward the base. I think the pitcher heard it too. I was like, ‘Oh boy, okay.’”

That hasn’t been an issue this year.

Cleveland fans have held up their end of the bargain: A surge in new season ticket purchases in the offseason soared even higher after the Tribe signed Edwin Encarnacion, and few and far between are the games when the lower bowl isn’t full. The Indians crossed one million in attendance after 44 homes games (it took 52 last year) and are on pace to draw two million for the first time since 2008.

The team’s end of the bargain? That’s another question.

“It’s been a lot of fun to see. We’ve noticed the uptick for sure, which makes it all the more frustrating for us because we’re spinning our wheels right now and we just want to get back there again,” Kipnis says. At this point the Indians are 31-29, one game back of the Twins, in a season of fits and starts that’s seen them sweep the world-beating Astros and also barely | clevescene.com | July 12 - 18, 2017

They had an off day yesterday, the third in a week or so after going 20 games without a break. Kipnis spent the last one with Lonnie Chisenhall â&#x20AC;&#x201D; his best friend on the team and a guy he calls, with or without baseball, a friend for life â&#x20AC;&#x201D; in Chisenhallâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s backyard with his two kids. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m Uncle Jason,â&#x20AC;? he says while noshing on a corndog, which would be unremarkable except heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eating it with a fork and knife despite the dishâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s built-in utensil.

Yesterday he caught Wonder Woman and lunch at Crocker Park and then watched the Cavs lose to the Warriors in Game 5 of the NBA Finals at home. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m learning to make better use of my off days,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I could sit on my couch all day, so Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m trying to make sure I get out of the house at least once.â&#x20AC;?

Tonight theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll begin a three-game series against the Dodgers starting with Cy Young ace Clayton Kershaw. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a good test, like the Rockies,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If guys just want to show up, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to get your ass kicked by good teams.â&#x20AC;? (They, of course, will lose two out of those three games and Kipnis, after banging two doubles off Kershaw in the ďŹ rst game and probably considering a new pre-game corndog ritual, will miss the next two with nagging neck spasm issues.)

And by now, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s getting to the point in the season when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not early anymore. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The fact that no oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pulled away in our division â&#x20AC;Ś weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re very fortunate,â&#x20AC;? Kipnis says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a shitty division right now, to be honest, and everyoneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beating up on each other.

Indeed.

Tito Francona lit into the team pretty well in a team meeting after one of the losses against the Rockies in Colorado. There have been a handful of meetings this year as the Indians struggled to get out of the gate but early June saw a spate of talks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;In the past couple of days Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve probably had more meetings than Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had in years,â&#x20AC;?

Francona told Cleveland.comâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Zack Meisel. The Colorado one was a bit different, according to Kipnis. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was much needed, and deservedly so,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was one of those things where guys were saying things behind the scenes and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Tito needs to come in here and say something,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; and he does and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Whoa, I was kidding, I was kidding.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was real quiet, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll tell you that.

Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s installed a lot of trust in the older guys and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want it to get to the point where he has to say something.

We police ourselves, we take care of things, so you know when he does speak youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve reached a point where itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gone too far. Rarely does he raise his voice or swear too much, but in this one he did both, and he wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t out of line. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not going to give you every detail, but it was basically a wake-up call. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no ďŹ ght. We get down early and act like the gameâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s over, and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s absolutely true. Last year we epitomized the theme of ďŹ ghting back and rising up to the challenge, and thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s none of that this year. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re too good to be wasting away opportunities or playing down to the competition.

Half of these guys we think are below us have better records than us right now. There was a meeting before the Astros series and he was like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t forget who we are.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; And we cleaned it up and beat the best team in baseball three games in a row and we thought we were ďŹ ne again, and then we got right back to all the bad things that were going on. This one was like, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;You guys really fucking forgot who we are.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;?

Maybe itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not abundantly clear who they are, or at least not reassuring to take stock of who they are right now, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clear who they should be. Inconsistent starting pitching has plagued the ďŹ rst half of the season, injuries havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t helped, and prolonged slumps from the Tribeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest bats â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Lindor, Santana and Kipnis, namely â&#x20AC;&#x201D; led to an uneven and frustrating recent stretch. Sure, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re currently in ďŹ rst place in the AL Central and stomped on the Tigers to hit the mid-season break on a high note; and sure, some advanced stats show them performing better than last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team and better than their record indicates. But things just feel different.

There was a lot of talk about the departure of Mike Napoli and the vacuum of veteran clubhouse leadership it created. Talk to some beat writers and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll say itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s overblown â&#x20AC;&#x201D; theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just not playing well; but talk to others and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a very real concern. Napoli, and Jason Giambi before him, was a mentor to Kipnis.

FEATURE His thoughts on their leadership, and absences, are interesting not just because it had become a hot topic in the midst of a summer stumble but also for how Kipnis views himself as a veteran and where he’s at in his career trajectory.

“People talk about missing Napoli or Rajai Davis, and we miss them and they are team guys,” Kipnis says. “Team guys just means you care more about winning than your own stuff. We still have all that, but my fear after last season was that everyone’s experienced everything now. You haven’t won a World Series, but you were there in Game 7 and there are no more surprises, even for the rookies. So there’s less you can say and it’s not like people are getting complacent, but they think that’s just how it is: We can win 14 in a row whenever we want, or we’re going to the World Series because we have the same team as last year. We’ve almost forgotten how hard it was to get there and how hard it is to get back. We’ve come out of the gate thinking the wrong thing and acting the wrong way.”

Kipnis is in his sixth full season in the majors. It’s five for Corey Kluber. Michael Brantley is the elder statesman of the clubhouse with eight-ish full years in, though all of last year was lost to injury. There’s something different about leadership, according to Kipnis, when the gap between the younger and older guys is slim. “[Napoli and Giambi], those guys were so good at having a feeling for the team. It’s weird: The demographic

right now is Brantley, Kluber and myself, we’re the veterans of the team. Those other guys had 10-plus years in, and when they spoke you knew it wasn’t coming from a place of opinion, it was from experience.

You listen closely, because it was all backed up. It loses a little bit when I’m trying to tell a younger guy who’s been right next to me in the dugout something, it’s tough when we’ve both experienced it all together.

With those guys, there were no Tito meetings — they did it themselves, which I’ve done in the past, but I started the season on the DL and, for the first three weeks back, it looked like I was still on the DL. Who am I to tell someone to do better when I can’t even put the ball in play right now? I got so caught up in trying to contribute something myself, I wasn’t fully on the pulse of the team. It took a little while, but I think we’re back on track and I think Brantley and Kluber have done a good job saying that’s enough of that, cleaning house basically. We’re going back to what works. If you don’t run it out, you’re going to hear about it. If you do something wrong, you’re going to hear about it.

“But yeah, guys just haven’t been playing good. I’m not playing the way I want to.”

He’s not, and it’s readily apparent.

Plus, Kipnis can’t quite kick the injury bug. If the rotator cuff is bothering him, he doesn’t admit it (though exit velocity and launch angle stats hint it might be). And the neck spasms dipped into the rearview just in time for a hamstring sprain on a recent Saturday night against the Tigers that landed him on the DL once again. He’ll limp into the All-Star break nowhere close to resembling

the player that twice made the midsummer classic himself.

The World Series was maybe, but hopefully not, a once-in-a-career opportunity, even more so because of the opponent and venue — Hey, have you heard Jason Kipnis is from Chicago? — but he almost missed out on the chance.

In the euphoric on-field celebration after the final out against the Blue Jays in the ALCS, Kipnis and Francisco Lindor ran toward each other near second base and jumped to embrace. Well, at least Kipnis thought they were jumping. Lindor wasn’t.

“You have every handshake in the world down but we couldn’t coordinate our celebration,” Kipnis says.

The second baseman came down hard, his left ankle rolling violently as he landed on Lindor’s foot.

“He was like, ‘We did it!’

“And I was like, ‘My fucking ankle!’

“And he was like, ‘We did it!’

“And I was like, ‘MY FUCKING ANKLE!’” Kipnis “did the hokey pokey” around the clubhouse celebration and quickly ducked into the trainer’s room while the party was still raging. The injury wouldn’t become public until the first press availability before the series, and despite the it’s-no-bigdeal brushoffs from Kipnis and the team, his playing status was a very real question. He feared he might miss all or part of the square-off against the Cubs, and if Game 1 had been scheduled any earlier than that Tuesday, he wouldn’t have been able to play. Anyone who saw the picture of his ankle, bulbous and blue, tweeted out by an MLB reporter on the

morning of the game would have no trouble believing that.

“I had to tape my ankle for every single game; I don’t normally do that.

And I had a needle in the ankle to numb it every game and a needle in the butt for Toradol every game, so I kind of felt great,” he says, kind of laughing. “I got hit by a pitch in the ribs in one of the games in Chicago and I didn’t flinch. I turned around and asked the ump if it hit me. I couldn’t feel anything.”

Maybe not physically, but emotionally. Wrigley Field was dotted with everyone he grew up with — teachers, friends, classmates, neighbors — all wearing Cubs jerseys.

“It was a surreal moment,” Kipnis says. “I was hearing I was a traitor and I was going to be the hometown villain, that I would have crushed everyone if we would have won. That would have been awesome; nothing would have made me happier.”

That, of course, didn’t happen. And Kipnis, at some point, had to return to Cubbie Central and his apartment where he lives in the off-season. He waited an extra week longer than he normally would have to return home, to let the parade happen and some of the excitement die down.

“Uh, it didn’t die down,” Kipnis says. “Cubs stuff in every damn window.”

He hunkered down in his apartment for the most part, surrounded by a close ring of friends and his family. His brothers, for instance, made just about every game during the playoff run — both Cubs fans, both now the biggest Indians fans — hoping that the Cubs’ 108-year World Series drought would notch another year.

“It sucked,” Kipnis says. “Around

Thanksgiving I took the train to O’Hare for a flight for a family vacation. It was like 6 a.m. and people were saying, ‘Go Cubs go.’ I put my hat down and my headphones on and let that one go. I got to the airport and was doing the self-ticket check and some guy said, ‘Maybe next year.’

I just go, ‘Fuck you,’ and turned back around. I’m like, ‘I didn’t handle that well. If that’s how I’m going to be … I thought I had prepared responses, but it was best to just avoid it after that for awhile.”

Kipnis has a similar philosophy about social media. Five years or so ago, for instance, he told a fan to fuck off. “That was probably a bad move,” Kipnis laughs. “I was standing up for my team and some people jump on your side and other people are telling you to take the high road and you’re like, ‘Shit, you’re right.’ You want all this access and you want to know who I am, but you say something wrong and you’re going to get who I am, then I’m the bad guy.”

Chances are pretty good that if you’ve tweeted something at Kipnis since then — an insult, a pat on the back, whatever — he’s seen it. Because for a long, long time Kipnis checked every single mention on Twitter, because he’s apparently a glutton for punishment.

“I don’t check every single one now,” Kipnis says. “I’ll browse. It affected me in a bad way for a long time; it’s weird to know what everyone is thinking and to know they’re saying it at you. It’s the ones that comment all that crap … you’re just like, ‘Why do I care what they say?’”

While that’s not surprising, it does represent a shift in his attitude toward giving access to his personal life on social media.

“I was one of the ones early on who thought how cool it was to be able to get to know the athletes like that for fans. That bridge wasn’t there when we were kids. But now you guys have too much access,” he says. “I try to keep my private life out of it because even when you post about a restaurant or fishing or something, every response is about blowing a 3-1 lead or hoping I get traded. And before, when I read everything, after a bad game I was like, ‘All right, fuck, let’s get through these,’ and after good games it was positive reinforcement. I try to check after only good games now, more or less. I’m definitely addicted, and I used to love it, but my relationship with social media is on thin ice now.”

Speaking of tweets, you might have seen this one: “Almost all of my teammates support Trump.” So said

Trevor Bauer back in February. You don’t have to have insider access to know that Bauer was spreading fake news.

“I can reassure you I wasn’t one of those guys. I have a soul,” Kipnis says. “I didn’t even vote this year.

Of my few political statements, and I won’t get too much into that stuff, [Trump’s] policies could be beneficial or not, it’s him as a person, it’s embarrassing to me.

“I know [Bauer’s] looking at some things like tax brackets and we’re definitely the one-percent. And that was definitely a thing like, ‘You need to post less, do less,’ ” Kipnis says of the rest of the Bauer political stream with a laugh. “We’ll hear about things the next day or whatever if we don’t see it. Not everyone’s ready to know about Trevor the way we know Trevor. He’s a special guy and it’s taken years to earn his friendship.”

In that regard, the Indians clubhouse is like every other workplace in America, at least in the way that the presidency has entered daily chatter.

“It’s a conversation to pass the day,” Kipnis says. “I know some guys who are very pro Trump and some very against him, but at no point does that ever screw with anything or become a fight. It’s something you’re talking about at lunch or whatever, but then every conversation ends with, ‘You’re an idiot. Okay, let’s go outside and play catch.’”

It’s also unique in other ways, with an overlapping demographic of fantastically wealthy individuals and foreign-born players, many of whom have family and friends directly affected by policies and actions of the new president.

“You start to hear stories from the Latin players and it puts it into perspective,” Kipnis says. “You hear about immigration and think, ‘This doesn’t affect me at all,’ and then you see all the people in your life who are affected and realize it does affect me. You have no say in the matter, but you just try to be there and be as supportive as you can for someone who needs it.”

(A semi-related interlude: Kipnis is firmly in the Keep the Chief faction.

“I’d say ‘stay,’ because I don’t see …

To me it’s not an offensive thing,” he says. “Again, I’m not Native American, and maybe they can tell me different. But it’s a logo I’ve come to wear proudly, that I embrace. I look at it with pride. I’m not in the demographic that it’s offending, if it is.” The topic comes up intermittently among the players, most recently when a Canadian activist sought a court ruling to prevent the Indians

To hear Kipnis tell it, the clubhouse is tight. “There are no bad eggs,” he says. Lonnie’s his pal and he compares their pairing to Statler and Waldorf, the cranky old Muppet characters, walking into a room just judging everyone. Kluber’s hardly the guy you see on TV or in interviews.

“Sometimes there’s a prank going on and you’re wondering who did this and Kluber’s just sitting there, all quiet, smiling, and you’re like, ‘That motherfucker.’ He’s actually hilarious,” Kipnis says. He exchanges music recommendations with Josh Tomlin, screenshotting songs they like on Spotify and texting them to each other. (Kipnis also agrees with the author that Tomlin’s pregame music is a huge downer and he should pick something different immediately.)

Which isn’t to say it’s always been peachy on all fronts. Just as it took years to earn Trevor Bauer’s friendship, or to have Kluber open up, relationships evolve. “You see this smiling relationship [with Francisco Lindor],” Kipnis says, “but there were bumps in the road that we had to go through to get there.” His keystone partner is well on his way to becoming a face of not just the Indians but Major League Baseball, and for all his talk about how small the experience gap is between the younger and older players, there’s definitely still a generational gap.

“We come from different eras,” Kipnis says. “I had older guys telling me to carry their bags, and you didn’t say anything, you just did it. And this Millennial age, they’re so good that everyone is like, ‘Don’t tell them to carry your bags.’ It’s tough, they ask why all the time. You’ll say, ‘Don’t sit on that couch,’ and they’ll ask why.

And you’re like, ‘I don’t know. I wasn’t allowed to.’ And they’re like, ‘That’s stupid,’ and they sit on the couch and you’re like, ‘Huh.’ “At the same time, he wants the work to be great, and it’s hard to get mad at someone when they’re holding up their end and doing what they’re supposed to be doing. He was made for the limelight. He’s got the smile, he embraces it, and he’s so athletically gifted and coordinated from both sides and defensively, there’s a reason he’s already having this success and being looked at as a star. I look at it like there’s not much I can teach him, but I’m almost like the bumper lanes for him. If he gets too far out of line,

just steer him back in and let him go down that path as someone who wants to be great.”

Six years in, Jason Kipnis is 30 years old and probably closer to the end of his career than the beginning. At the very least, he’s probably around the midpoint. I asked him how or if he manages to take stock of certain moments, to appreciate them as they happen instead of waiting to reflect when his playing days are done.

“I think I’ll come up for air after my career is over, but at the same time I know I have to appreciate it now,” he says. “I still have favorite players. One of them’s younger than me. I’m not going to give them away because I don’t want them to read this and get a big head, but there are guys I appreciate the way they play the game.

“We just went to Colorado for the first time,” he continues. “And I felt like a rookie again looking around the stadium. I adore big league stadiums, just getting to hit batting practice, that’s fun to me. There’s the business side, the competitive side, but the kid in you wants to appreciate everything.”

Like when he sees fans wearing his jersey, a sight that never gets old. He makes it a point to try and sign autographs for kids, but also for anyone in No. 22. “I love it,” he

says. “I know what it takes to go and get a jersey or convince your parents to get you one. And you have all the options in the world and you pick mine. And when you see it at road games, people who’re not even living in Cleveland, that’s when it really puts a smile on my face when I see it from second base.”

Kipnis was an outfielder in college and transitioned to second base after being drafted. As his career wanes, some have wondered whether he could return. “I can tell you there are a lot of people on Twitter that want to see me in the outfield,” he says with a chuckle.

“I’ve always been a guy that you give me a couple weeks and I can learn that position. If they tell me our best bet is to have this player at second and move to left, I’ll pick it up again and nail it down. It’s not something I try to think about, like I only have a few years left in the infield, but it’s not like I hope I get to play outfield. They say, ‘This is your glove and this is where you’re standing,’ that’s fine with me.”

He likes being Uncle Kip and wants a family one day, when it’s the right time. “We have team dinners and it’s always husbands and wives, and I’m always at the end. Last year, [Tyler] Naquin was my date,” he says. “I see how it is with kids and it’s something I want to happen one day; I’m looking forward to being a dad.” As far as the other part of

having a family: “I tried Bumble for like two weeks two years ago.

I had connections and started conversations but literally never met one person. It’s very on the surface: You’re good looking, swipe.

I couldn’t do it. I deleted it.”

But that’s all in the future. For now, there is baseball to play, and hopefully a lot of it, stretching into the fall. Kipnis still very much wears last season’s bitter end, and he’s been through rough stretches before and still managed to notch solid slash lines by the time seasons end.

“It’s weird,” he says. “I’ve been a complete player over five years but never at the same time. I’m well aware of that. I’ve stolen 30 bags, hit over 20 home runs, and now it’s like, do it in the same year, dammit.

Trying to be that complete player every year, that’s the goal.”

The Indians entered the All Star break at 47-40 and in first place in the AL Central. It’s nevertheless felt disappointing so far. A whole second half awaits and if the Tribe does what Kipnis thinks it can do, maybe next offseason he’ll be writing again for the Player’s Tribune, except this time it’ll be titled, “We Did It, Cleveland.”

Artifacts on display will include items from the group’s first major hit, “She’s Not There,” including Rod Argent’s Hohner electric pianet and sheet music; Chris White’s bass guitar; Paul Atkinson’s acoustic guitar used on the recording of “Tell Her No”; Hugh Grundy’s Ludwig snare drum used on all of the Zombies’ 1960s recordings; and the artwork for the band’s Odessey and Oracle album by Terry Quirk.

The exhibit shows how the band handled its success and how the group has influenced acts such as ZZ Top, Dave Grohl, Arctic Monkeys, the Shins and more. The Zombies will also participate in a Rock Hall trivia event, which will include behind-thescenes highlights of the new exhibit.

Liz Maugans’ Artist Trust Project Setting a record for the most works in a single installation at MOCA Cleveland, Liz Maugans’ Artist Trust Project features more than 400 self-portraits by local artists.

Redefining the term “artist” and our region’s geographic boundaries, the project includes a variety of residents. Collectively, it showcases the immense wealth of local talent.

Beyond the installation at MOCA Cleveland, Maugans has created an online database of all the participating artists. Double-Edged The latest exhibition at the Cleveland Print Room pairs Cleveland-based artist Melindo Placko with New York artist and collector Nigel Maister. For DoubleEdged, Placko has created a series of collage drawings using the cyanotype photographic process, while incorporating elements of drawing and text. Her imagery includes anatomical drawings and dream-like scenes of rain and roadways. Maister’s portion of the exhibition features diptychs from his “tight.word.lit” series.

Maister’s work explores themes of narrative through the use of found, snapshot photography, mostly from the 1980s and later. Using these outdated images as his raw materials, Maister explores both implied and explicit narratives, “manifested in emotional, formal, aesthetic, intuitive and intellectual expression.” Double-Edged opens tonight with a reception from 5 to 9 p.m. and remains on view through Aug. 19. ART BACKWARD AND FORWARD Bryon Miller revisits his latest work while hanging his first solo exhibition

By Dott von Schneider THERE IS ONLY ONE DIPTYCH hung on the wall when I arrive at Maria Neil Art Project. I’m catching up with photographer Bryon Miller, who has just begun to install his first solo exhibition in 10 years, Packaging materials, tools and a ladder create an almost ikebana feel to this boxed-in landscape. There are photographs lined up along the walls to be mounted. Installing artwork is precise math, and this highly organized disarray is the antecedent.

Miller has operated several galleries and organized countless exhibitions, working nonstop for as long as I can remember. “I’m exhausted.” he says, summing it all up. “I’ve done a bunch of group shows, but solo shows are a monster.

It’s a stress inducing process. I mean, I definitely don’t see all the mistakes from other artists as I’m hanging their work, but when you’re hanging your own work, you see every little flaw. Creating art is not an easy thing. I think that’s why I got into gallery ownership and curating exhibits. I like the struggle and I appreciate anyone who puts themselves out there. It’s not an easy thing to do.

“Let’s be honest, Cleveland isn’t an easy place to be an artist. Do I miss curating? Of course I do, but I also had to put a lot of personal work on hold in order to do it. I have no regrets, though.”

Moving through the gallery I inquire about his research and development. “This body of work started out as a feeling. A few years back when Lake Erie had frozen over, I had hiked about a half-mile out onto the frozen surface. The ice was pushing the sediment up onto itself. It made little rivers and these crazy things here. I actually had a Holga camera out there with me, so these are images of this sediment and clay that you don’t usually see.”

(The Holga, designed in the early 1980s, is a 120 medium-format film camera known for its lo-fi aesthetic qualities.) “I looked back and realized how quiet it was, with just the sound of ice moving below me.

As cliched as this story is beginning to sound, it started with that feeling.

I suppose it was about being content with not understanding. I had an

odd feeling of loss and detachment from the world around me. So these were the start of the whole process of being more in tune with ourselves.

These pieces are about silence.”

The image used in the show’s promotional materials is a portrait of Miller’s daughter, Frankie, and to say it’s striking is a critical understatement. I’m reminded of the first time I saw the “Mona Lisa”

in person, after years of scanning through art history books. In print, the painting looms so much larger than life; yet it is only 1-foot wide by 2-feet tall. In Miller’s diptych, Frankie’s gaze pierces right through us. Its silent accuracy is sublime.

“The whole show is traditionally done except for the six larger pieces,” he says, pointing to the unframed work. “And these [photos of the band

own darkroom.”

Miller is also an editorial and commercial photographer. He has shot several local, national, and international acts and currently works for four or five publications.

“Yeah, I dig it. Working as a freelance photographer isn’t as glamorous as one may think. It’s a lot of work, travel, and late nights staring at a computer screen. But to

be honest, it’s great. I moved out of my old studio about a year and a half ago. I’ve been on location a lot, so it actually worked out to my benefit.

I’m in the process of naming a new location very soon. I just want it to be right. I’m getting too old to move studios all the time. Photography gear is heavy.”

Regarding this new body of photography, “It’s imagery I hold close to my heart. I think that’s all one can say. I can go on and on about the philosophical meaning behind it, but I’d rather you make up your own story. I got into photography because I wanted to work with film.

A lot has changed, and it has become more of a side project for most photographers. But let’s be honest, film is just plain beautiful.”

STAGE MARY, MARY, QUITE CONTRARY The mother of Jesus is at the center of a play, and a dust-up with some Catholics, in The Testament of Mary

By Christine Howey EVERY PARENT KNOWS HOW IT feels when you see your kid running around with what you feel might be the wrong crowd. But when your son is Jesus Christ and you’re his mom, the stakes are raised a bit higher than usual.

For the protesters outside “The Helen” Theatre at Playhouse Square, who are registering their displeasure at the existence of The Testament of Mary, the stakes are indeed high.

For others, this elegant one-person play written by Colm Toibin, based on his eponymous novella, is an intriguing glance into the persona of a figure traditionally wrapped — or smothered — in religious iconography and devotion.

In Toibin’s construction, we encounter the usually silent and distant Mary a couple decades after her son’s death, living in a home where a couple “visitors” keep watch on her. Here she is not a polished and glowing image of maternal glory and acceptance. She is just a woman and mother who helplessly watches as her son is swept along to his fate, egged on by a band of acolytes whom she dismisses as “misfits.” She also points out that his road to fame was aided by some possible trickery involving raising a local dude named Lazarus from his grave and turning water into wine at a wedding.

This is less a religious testament than a witness statement, crafted in the spare and subtle words of a playwright who never steps too hard on easy targets — such as the virgin birth. When that subject comes up, Anne McEvoy as Mary indicates that she was there at conception, and her expression says volumes.

Indeed, McEvoy navigates the play’s contemporary language with a smooth, firmly controlled tone until she speaks about the crucifixion, when the pain of a mother seeing her son tortured and killed comes to the fore. In this telling, the man on the cross does not bear it all with otherworldly silence. Instead he howls with pain, and that agony is registered indelibly on McEvoy’s expressive face.

As intense as McEvoy’s

performance is, director Bernadette Clemens keeps a tight a hold on the reins, and at times that prevents us from seeing this interpretation of Mary in all possible dimensions. It begins at the top of the show with a reveal of the actor in a manner that is perhaps too clever by half, as we see Mary slowly morph from one costume into another. Are we surprised? Yes. Does it mean anything? That is questionable.

For the bulk of the 80-minute play, McEvoy is gowned by costume designer Kristine Davies in a Clara Bow-ish satiny gown outfitted with a bullet bra that is later covered by a matching satin bolero jacket.

This luxe take on what Mary might have been wearing seems to indicate she was chilling in Brentwood, not enduring an implied exile in Ephesus A similar confusion is raised

by Don McBride’s scenic design, which features a raised platform surrounded by what looks like the hazards at the 17th hole at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course. There are a couple bunkers, one filled with sand and the other with stones, and a little pond where Mary at times splashes her tootsies. McEvoy’s Mary seems entirely at home with these holes, walking casually among them, sitting placidly in the sand and fondling the stones.

It’s an interesting and handsome set design, but the meaning seems murky. Since the holes limit Mary’s movement and force her to alter her path, these little pits would seem to symbolize the way Mary and her story has been blocked and constricted through history. But Mary appears quite content with the arrangement.

unintentional echoing of how Mary has been treated for eons.

It is a tribute to how effective McEvoy’s performance is that, at the end, one wishes that Mary would throw a bunch of the stones

into the placid water, top it off with fistfuls of sand, and turn the place into a wasteland instead of leaving the tiny country club intact. If that had happened, her final, dramatic flourish with a swath of material from the set would feel redemptive and triumphant.

Quibbles with the staging aside, Toibin’s script is finely crafted and Anne McEvoy invests it with a quiet determination and wry skepticism that is rich and evocative. And that is something worth seeing, protests or not.

Caesar is captured, is put face to face with the man he abhors, and forced to watch his ape-brethren used for slave labor as an imminent and mysterious battle looms. The ďŹ lmâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s third act delivers multiple highoctane action sequences and a brutal emotional climax War is 2017â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best action movie so far â&#x20AC;&#x201D; better than Wonder Woman â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and is about as good as the serieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second installment. (It will take some time and reďŹ&#x201A;ection to discern which of the second two Apes ďŹ lms represent the serieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best.) Both are directed by Matt Reeves and both are visually and thematically darker than 2011â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sunny and suburban Rise. The visual effects have also advanced, and the CGI apes in War are as eye-popping and precise as anything the ďŹ eld has yet produced.

There are some curiosities: Among other things, the literate grafďŹ ti of the Colonelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s soldiers â&#x20AC;&#x201D; â&#x20AC;&#x153;Ape-pocalypse Now! Bedtime for Bonzoâ&#x20AC;? would seem to represent the screenwriter more than the characters.

But this oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a must-see. One hopes â&#x20AC;&#x201D; though cannot expect â&#x20AC;&#x201D; that the ďŹ lmmakers and the producers will not sully the franchise by contriving a string of weak followup episodes after this splendid trilogy has ended with such power and elegance.

ONE OF THE MANY JOYS OF the new Planet of the Apes ďŹ lms â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Rise, in 2011; Dawn, in 2014; and now, the breathtaking War for the Planet of the Apes, which opens areawide on Friday â&#x20AC;&#x201D; is that they function independently. Rise was the story of a scientist (James Franco), who, in his effort to ďŹ nd a cure for Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, inadvertently created a disease that would wipe out humanity as it empowered apes with human intelligence. Dawn depicted the world some years later. Humans tried to survive in San Francisco while a splinter cell of violent apes staged a coup and attempted to destroy humans once and for all. It was a vivid and layered story about power â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the need for actual, hydro-electric power, in the humansâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; case, and the volatile balance of power within and between adjacent societies.

In War, a new and newly morally vexing story unfolds. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s later still. A radical militant sect of humans, led by a Kurtzian ďŹ gure who goes only

by Colonel (Woody Harrelson) wants to eradicate all apes from the earth.

But this sect also wants to eradicate humans afďŹ&#x201A;icted with a new mutation of the Simian Flu. The afďŹ&#x201A;icted cannot speak, and this is perceived as a radical genetic regression.

(Narratively, it echoes the storyline of Rise. In the ďŹ rst ďŹ lm, apes were becoming more like humans. Now, humans are becoming more like apes.)

But this is Caesarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s story. Caesar is the trilogyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s central ďŹ gure and epic hero, played masterfully by the multi-talented Andy Serkis, who will be remembered chieďŹ&#x201A;y for his performance as Gollum in the Lord of the Rings ďŹ lms and for Caesar.

Caesar is the glue that holds the ďŹ lms together, the ape that started it all.

He remains an amazing character, an intelligent and conscientious animal with conďŹ&#x201A;icted allegiances who, above all, wants peace. His quest for revenge

LIVE, WORK AND PRAY Places to go and things to see on an Amish Country road trip

By Douglas Trattner IT WAS DURING OUR SEARCH, six years ago, for a sturdy Amishbuilt chicken coop that we began to truly discover and, thus, fall for picturesque Holmes County and the surrounding area. It goes without saying that while many Amish and Mennonite residents are matchless carpenters, they are lousy when it comes to maintaining an online presence. The best way to find the coop of our dreams, we quickly realized, was to pull off the main roads, ease off the gas, and scour the landscape.

We’re no longer in the market for a coop, but we haven’t changed our approach when visiting the region.

Sure, we still make our mandatory visit to Lehman’s Hardware, but we spend equal time exploring the quiet backroads, where the pastoral terrain reveals itself anew with each crest and valley. It’s easy to see why so many Swiss and German immigrants, in search of religious freedom, felt so at home in these lush, fertile valleys.

Over the years, we’ve gotten smarter about the way we attack our Amish Country visits. We typically avoid swinging through on Sunday, a day of church, rest and family that sees many shuttered businesses, and we always bring cash and a large cooler loaded with ice to safely stow

perishable purchases. But most of all, we keep a keen eye out for buggies, especially on those blind hills.

Amish farms dominate the landscape, but we’ve learned to not assume that just because it’s sold here that it was grown here. In season, we make stops at places like Miller’s Farm Market (3460 St. Rt. 39, 330893-2235) and Blessing Acres (6728 Twp. Rt. 362) to load up on locally grown produce like sweet peas, radishes, onions, garlic, zucchini and cucumbers. But we also are suckers for hand-lettered signs that lead, often enough, down a winding road to a humble card table outfitted with farm-fresh eggs, just-picked berries, or jars of golden honey. There will be a price sheet and receptacle for cash: The honor system is alive and well in Amish Country.

We could not care less about quilting, leather saddles and tack, or a labradoodle from a heartless puppy mill (or bunny, for that matter, unless it’s fully dressed and ready for the skillet). But we do like to fill the cooler with quality meats destined for the home chest freezer. As is the case with the produce, most of the butcher shops in the area sell both local and non-local products. Doughty Farm Meats (5362 St. Rt. 557, 330-6746257) sells whole fresh and frozen chicken from nearby Gerber Poultry

as well as pastured chicken from smaller Amish farms. This small shop also sells locally raised and processed heritage breed pork and beef. You can skip the middleman and buy direct at the Gerber Poultry retail store (5889 Kidron Rd., 330-8571841, gerbers.com), where that same hormone- and antibiotic-free Amishraised chicken is sold fresh, fried and rotisserie style.

While places like Mrs. Yoder’s Kitchen, Der Dutchman Restaurant and Amish Door attract huge crowds in search of gut-busting buffets flush with homespun comfort foods like fried chicken, meatloaf, Salisbury steak and all the fixins, we prefer the more tranquil Chalet in the Valley (5060 St. Rt. 557, 330-8932550, babyswiss.com). Run by the Guggisberg Cheese family, this cute and only moderately kitschy Swiss/ Austrian restaurant dishes up crispy veal and pork schnitzel, bratwurst and sauerkraut platters, and gently bubbling pots of fondue, all warmly served by dirndl-clad servers. Made with Baby Swiss, Gruyere and a hint of sherry, the fondue is rich, silky and delicious. Across the street is the Guggisberg Cheese facility, where you can purchase cheese from the source.

We’ve always sidestepped Hershberger’s Farm and Bakery

(5452 St. Rt. 557, 330-674-6096) because the popular attraction seemed geared to families with children. Kids most certainly lose their marbles over the animals, but there’s plenty here for adults to enjoy as well. Buy a cone of grain for $1 and send it, via mechanical conveyor belt, to awaiting goats 20 feet up on the roof. After feeding carrot chips to the pigs, sheep, goats and Big Ben, a 3,000-pound Belgian draft horse, head inside for homemade baked goods, ice cream, jams and preserves.

You can pick out the Amish and Mennonite homes by the presence of clotheslines and the absence of power lines connecting them to the main distribution lines. Since 1955, Lehman’s Hardware (4779 Kidron Rd., 800-438-5346, lehmans.com) has been supplying many of the homes in the area with the non-electrical tools and supplies need to maintain that uncomplicated lifestyle. The rambling facility is nirvana for tinkerers, gardeners, home cooks and those who enjoy doing things the old-fashioned way. POKE YOUR HEAD INTO ONE OF the quiet, low-lit bars on St. Clair Avenue sometime and ask one of the regulars where to find good Eastern European food in the neighborhood.

If you’re lucky, they’ll clue you into Marie’s Restaurant.

Marie’s, at 45th and St. Clair, is relaxed and homey, with a carpeted floor that makes dining feel like a meal in a relative’s rec room. Which makes sense for this family-run business. Like many of Cleveland’s ethnic restaurants, Marie’s is a family affair, helmed by the motherdaughter team of Mila Sabljic (chef) and Anna Vucica (manager, waiter, bookkeeper, everything else).

For more than 40 years, it has been a stalwart of Croatian dining in the historically Slavic St. ClairSuperior neighborhood. Yet in that time, it’s never achieved the acclaim of establishments like Sokolowski’s or Sterle’s Country House down the street.

That doesn’t bother Anna Vucica.

“We never advertise,” she says.

“Business is word of mouth.” And word of mouth has worked for Marie’s. Stop in any weekday and you’ll find a stable of regulars and old-timers (including, at one time, now-jailed county officials Frank Russo and Jimmy Dimora). Vucica greets them all by name.

Of course, she should know them by now; she’s worked here 19 years.

“About half my life,” she says.

The Sabljic family migrated from Croatia to America in 1987, when Anna was just 10. The economy in Croatia, says Vucica, brought them to the U.S., and her father’s brother, who had settled in Northeast Ohio, brought them to Cleveland.

Sabljic had already run a restaurant in Croatia. So in 1991, when the opportunity arose to purchase Marie’s Restaurant, she seized upon it.

The history of Marie’s has spanned much of Cleveland’s fall

and recent rise — a rise that, despite the boost to nearby downtown, has yet to fully benefit St. Clair-Superior.

“A lot of people have moved out of the area,” says Vucica, who grew up not far from Marie’s. “A lot of factories closed down.”

It’s no mystery to Vucica how the restaurant has survived the city’s ups and downs: “Good food.” The menu at Marie’s is a bold throwback to the kitchens of mid-century America. Dishes rarely seen outside the most staunchly Old-World kitchens (beef goulash, liver and onions) are on proud display here.

The cevapi (cheh-VAH-pee) is a show-stopping dish hard to find even in neighboring Slavic restaurants. Mildly spiced sausage links, made from lamb, veal, and pork, are lighter and more flavorful than sausage has a right to be.

When asked for more detail, Anna simply says, “That is all I can say about them.”

Anna says it’s “actually pretty good” working with her mother all these years. She’s still a fan of Mila’s cooking: Every Tuesday, she gets the weekly special of spaghetti and meat sauce. “It’s the best in the city,” she claims. What makes it so good?

“Mom’s special recipe.”

Mila and husband Veselko (who buys supplies for the restaurant and built the back bar) have three children, all of whom worked in the restaurant growing up. Anna is the one who stayed. “The chosen one,” she jokes. “I always felt one of us should stay and help with the family business.”

The regulars expect Anna will take over when Mila retires, which she’s not willing to do anytime soon.

“Someone will take it over,” she says. “But she has a long way to go before she retires.”

By Douglas Trattner TOM MCINTYRE HAS HAD HIS eye on Stand H14 at the West Side Market for years. Located in the northeast corner of the market, Dani’s Seafood has been an ambition of his ever since he began working for his mother, Kate, while he was still in high school. Now, as the proprietor of Kate’s Fish, McIntyre finally has gotten his wish. He recently purchased the business and has ambitious plans to completely rework the space and business.

Kate McIntyre launched Kate’s Fish (Stands F12, F13) in 2001, expanding the business both figuratively and literally when she grew into the adjacent wraparound stall. While Tom worked at Kate’s on and off over the years, it wasn’t until 2008 that he fully committed himself to the business of selling fish.

“My mom had built up a nice little business, but she was in trouble, behind on invoices, and she was thinking of selling the business,” Tom recalls. “I said, ‘You’re not selling the company; I’m moving home.’”

Since coming back, McIntyre has increasingly taken on more and more responsibility, juggling the jobs of principal fish cutter and company manager. One of the first things he began doing was forging new relationships with better wholesale suppliers.

“In the beginning, we never really thought about buying direct, which is the same way the local wholesalers buy it — off a truck out of Boston, Florida or Virginia, or you get stuff flown in from Alaska, Hawaii or Seattle,” McIntyre explains. “They don’t want to deal with a small company or a company that doesn’t have credit. It’s been a long, long process, but once we started buying direct, it opened up a whole new world of products that we can bring in.”

It’s not just the variety of products, he adds, but the quality of those products.

“Seafood is a ticking clock; the product is going bad before you even get it,” he says. “By buying whole fish instead of buying fileted fish, you can check the freshness of the

fish. Are the gills red? Are the eyes clear? Is it shiny? You can’t tell that from looking at a skinless filet.”

As any loyal customer of Kate’s Fish well knows, the quality and variety of the products on display in the coolers has continually improved each and every year, and it evolves with the seasons just as local produce does. Spring ushers in soft shell crabs from Chesapeake Bay and halibut cheeks from Alaska, which are followed by wild salmon from the Pacific Northwest and walleye from the Great Lakes. Then come the stone crab claws from Florida, live lobsters from Maine, and sweet bay scallops from Nantucket.

“We are always trying to expand our product line, but there’s only so much room in the case,” he says.

In addition to the raw fish and seafood, Kate’s has been steadily adding more prepared foods like smoked salmon, seafood salads, bouillabaisse, and cook-and-eat crab cakes. The reasoning behind products like those are two-fold: It’s what any smart chef does to add value to an ingredient, but it’s also a reaction to an evolving customer base.

“The market has gone on this crazy roller coaster ride for the last 16 years and through it all, we’ve built up this business,” he explains.

“We’ve seen the grocery-shopping crowd turn into a tourist crowd on the weekends. You’ve got to get creative and change with the times.

The weekend crowd is not coming in to buy 20 steaks to take home and freeze. They very much want to experience the neighborhood. They want to eat something. Prepared foods like pastries, crepes, gyros, falafel are killing it.”

Dani’s Seafood — what many people derogatorily refer to as the “stinky fish place” — has been around since 2002. But that corner space has been a fish market ever since the West Side Market opened in 1912. The space is much larger than it appears, owing to a wall of walkin coolers, which McIntyre plans to remove during a gut renovation that, in the end, will net him a full kitchen, a market perk reserved for corner spots.

“I want to change the way people think about seafood in this town,” he explains. “I want to make really good seafood approachable and affordable. Growing up, we always

went to the shore for summer vacation and to me, good seafood is fresh, casual, low-key food.”

While still early in the planning, McIntyre says to think coastal seafood shack, with items like fried whole belly clams, lobster rolls, poke, fried fish sandwiches and dinners, and live lobster plucked from tanks and cooked to order.

Steamed shrimp, fried shrimp, peel-and-eat shrimp: “You name it; the possibilities are limitless,” he says.

McIntyre is more than comfortable investing in a 105-yearold public market that often is the butt of criticism from both shoppers and vendors. And rightly so. The city-run structure needs constant attention and improvements, and nearby parking lots have been commandeered by pleasure seekers bound for boozy West 25th Street.

For all the naysayers, McIntyre offers some pretty sage advice.

“The market isn’t perfect; it needs a little TLC, but we had a record year last year,” he says. “For too many vendors the mindset has always been cheap, cheap, cheap. Do you see the kinds of people who are coming through there now? Differentiate yourself: sell Prime beef, sell grassfed beef, sell pork that isn’t coming from Daisyfield, don’t sell $5 flats of rotten strawberries. If you’re selling a good product, people will come to you.”

Look for the as-yet-unnamed project to open in early 2018.

MUSIC THE DIRTY DOZEN 12 bands to see at this year’s Warped Tour

By Jeff Niesel AN ANNUAL DAY-LONG SUMMER event that brings all sorts of punk bands to town to play in front of a crowd of teens and tweens willing to brave the sweltering heat in a Blossom parking lot where makeshift stages have been set up, Vans Warped Tour offers hours and hours of music.

The festival will feature a slew of underground bands and a few veterans (Suicide Machines, Save Ferris, T.S.O.L., Hatebreed) who’ve played dive bars and punk festivals for longer than some of the fans have been alive.

Unfortunately, elder statesmen the Dickies won’t be among them. Tour organizers booted the band after the group’s singer berated a female fan.

Still, this year’s Warped Tour offers plenty that the punk purist will appreciate. Here’s our guide to some of the probable highlights.

ANTI-FLAG Given that Anti-Flag split up after its first show back in 1988, the band has recovered quite nicely and continues to tour and record. Two years ago, it came through town to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Terror State, an album of politically charged songs that it released in 2003 when George W. Bush was in office. Produced by Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, it’s one of the band’s most accessible records. When the band released The Terror State, it was at the height of U.S. intervention in the Middle East.

The album’s opening track “Turncoat” features gang-style vocals as the guys yell out “liar” in a blatant attack on the commander-in-chief. Expect to hear plenty of politically charged songs when the band performs at Blossom.

Singer Justin Sane routinely criticized former President Obama and has publically called Trump a “con man.”

metalcore band, sputters and spits like he’s possessed. Last year’s Chaos, the band’s first album with new drummer Sean Heenan, essentially adheres to metalcore conventions while presenting a few twists. Album opener “Ignite” possesses an industrial rock edge with its pulsating synths.

It even features a noodle-y mid-song guitar solo that sounds like something you’d hear on early Metallica albums.

Elsewhere, the hip-hop-oriented “Bulletproof” recalls Linkin Park.

In “Public Apology,” Fronzak sneers “fuck you shit” as he asserts his use of profanities doesn’t require an apology.

Given the crass lyrics, it’s a surprise these guys haven’t gotten booted from the tour. (Niesel)

BEARTOOTH Beartooth rejoins the Vans Warped Tour for the third time.

Singer and Columbus, Ohio, native Caleb Shomo brings heavy riffs as he belts out songs about selfhatred, depression, bullying and surviving in a world that can be cruel. “Hated,” off their sophomore album, Aggressive, features breakdowns upon breakdowns that complement Shomo’s mix of singing and screaming as he barks, “Who knew you’d be hated for being who you are and be a big target for all the insecure.” The lyrics alone make you want to break things, which is why checking them out is a must. BARB WIRE DOLLS A few years ago, influential radio DJ Rodney Bingenheimer convinced this band to leave its native Greece for sunny Southern California. After a couple of residences at Sunset Strip clubs (yes, they’re still there), the band hit the festival circuit and hasn’t looked back. Just released on Motörhead Music, the label launched by the late, great Lemmy Kilmister, Rub My Mind arrives amid much hype. Lead track, “Back in the USSA,” features chug-a-lug guitars and snotty vocals that suggest a heavy metal iteration of the Runaways. It’s good stuff. (Niesel)

BEING AS AN OCEAN Despite the fact that their tour bus caught fire earlier this year, Being As An Ocean has continued with nothing but positive vibes.

Singer Joel Quartuccio Melodic speaks as much as he sings as he tells stories of lost hope and broken love. The simple chords in the band’s music make it easy to calmly sway; the sound and style is reminiscent of La Dispute, but with a few more screams as Quartuccio cleanly sings anthemic refrains. It’s also not uncommon for Quartuccio to leave the stage and join the crowd as fans surround him in the middle of the set, passing the microphone

to those near him. He’s almost like a messiah engulfed in a tight circle.

(Leuthauser) ANDY BLACK Popularly known as Andy Six, Andy Biersack, the lead vocalist of Black Veil Brides, takes his inspiration from bands such as Kiss, Def Leppard, the Damned and the Misfits. In 2014, Biersack made his solo debut with the single “They Don’t Need to Understand,” a synth-heavy ballad that has more in common with Panic!

At the Disco than the aforementioned hard rock acts. Last year, Black issued his full-length debut, Shadow Side, and continued to explore synth-pop sounds.

While the solo material might differ sonically from Black Veil Brides, the lyrics don’t represent a huge departure as they present a message about the importance of finding one’s self and fighting through hardship. (Daniela Cacho) DANCE GAVIN DANCE Indie rockers Dance Gavin Dance went through a handful of singers until the current one, Tilian Pearson, came into the picture. One thing hasn’t changed and that’s the intricate, quick tempo changes and complex finger picking from guitarist Will Swan.

MUSIC R&B vocals distinguishes DGD. Not afraid of experimenting, the band’s most recent single, a cover of Bruno Mars’ “That’s What I Like,” shows just how eclectic its taste in music is.

(Leuthauser) FALLING IN RESERVE The former singer for the posthardcore band Escape the Fate, Ronnie Radke started Falling in Reserve nearly 10 years ago. Post-hardcore with a hint of pop, Falling in Reserve made an impressive debut with its 2011 full-length, The Drug in Me Is You. With 2013’s Fashionably Late, the band paired pop hooks with uplifting lyrics, a trend that continues on its most recent album, Coming Home. On songs such as the title track, Radke whispers more than he shouts, bringing a quiet intensity to the music.

(Cacho) FUTURISTIC With a machine-gun flow and an independent grind, Arizona rapper Futuristic has built a devoted, grassroots following from humble beginnings. Eschewing major labels and even local promoters, the slick spitting Futuristic (born Zachary Beck) deployed social media-recruited street teams to build hype for his first few tours — tours which lost money in the short term but have blossomed into larger venues and substantial streaming numbers. Beck operates in the hip-hop sphere that includes former XXL Freshmen Dizzy Wright, Jarren Benton and Hopsin; it’s a tangy, lyrical brand of weirdo rap that

Urungus died in 2014, leaving the group without any of its founding members. Despite the loss, the band has soldiered on. While it’s out of sync with the emo and screamo acts, expect the shock rockers to deliver a wildly theatrical performance. (Niesel) NECK DEEP It would be foolish to not check out Neck Deep, the pop-punk powerhouse from Wales. The five-piece band has set itself apart from the pop-punk scene and is right up there in popularity with the Story So Far, the Wonder Years and New Found Glory. Either bands everywhere want to sound like Neck Deep and be like Neck Deep — but not actually be a carbon copy — or else they’re just ripping off Neck Deep.

It’s a vicious cycle for up-and-coming pop-punk bands. Singer Ben Barlow chants incredibly catchy choruses such as, “Life’s not out to get you, despite the things you’ve been through,” which makes this a band you don’t want to miss because you’ll be singing right along with everyone else. Despite the sing-along lyrics, they still pack in the punches with guitar riff after riff and heavy percussion from drummer Dani Washington. Regardless of the pedestal that Neck Deep is currently on, it’s hard to deny just how good they are and just how sad it would be if you were to miss them at Blossom.

(Leuthauser) WATKSKY In the past, Warped Tour has featured more than just punk bands. Acts such as the Black Eyed Peas, Eminem and Katy Perry have performed at the festival. Now, it welcomes lyrical genius and fastpaced rapper Watsky. Also an author,

For live shows, they don elaborate outfits that make them look like they stepped out of that cantina scene in Star Wars, and they proceed to splatter the audience with fake blood. The band was dealt a serious blow when its leader Oderus

poet and a speaker, the guy even delivered a TED Talk once. His fastpaced rapping compares to the likes of Tech9 and Eminem, and he regularly makes fun of himself and society at the same time. His newest album, x Infinity, explores his more serious side as he raps about trying to get through the rat race of life. The album includes messages about everything from gun violence to acceptance of the LGBTQ community. His lyrical skills and distinctive delivery provide plenty of reasons to check him out.

HOT STUFF Squirrel Nut Zippers bring their anniversary tour to the Grog Shop

By Jeff Niesel ORIGINALLY RELEASED WAY BACK in the summer of 1996, Squirrel Nut Zippers’ second album, Hot, defied all expectations. At the time, pop fodder from acts such as the Spice Girls ruled the airwaves.

What a shock, then, when Hot yielded the hit single “Hell,” a song that featured woozy horns and a swinging bass riff. The album went on to sell 1.3 million copies and launch a veritable revival of swing music.

Singer-guitarist Jimbo Mathus, who played in indie acts such as Metal Flake Mother and Johnny Vomit & the Dry Heaves prior to forming the Zippers, started the band with his then-wife Katharine Whalen.

“It was just a shared interest in early American music and theater,” says Mathus in a phone interview from his Oxford, Mississippi, home, when asked about how the group first came together in 1993. He brings the Zippers, who’re currently on a tour to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Hot, to the Grog Shop on Thursday.

“It was part of my education that I was giving myself, and I was intrigued with arts and music,” he continues. “I have played music since I was 6 years old, so for 44 years. I had a couple of record deals before that. It just came together in Chapel Hill where there was a vintage vibe going on with the

They were ahead of the curve in terms of keeping that old-time music going. We took it to another level with original sounding concoctions. Me being a writer first and foremost, we put our own spin on it. It just became incredibly successful very quickly.”

And what was it like for the indie band to see the single and accompanying album become commercial successes?

“Man, it depends on who you ask,” says Mathus. “I thought it was fantastic. I had always been in the arts and never counted on any type of success. I never even considered making money or becoming popular.

It was a cool experience for me. I really enjoyed it and took that opportunity to dig in harder and learn more.”

Mathus says the band didn’t intend

“We didn’t plan on any of that,” says Mathus. “It was weird timing.

There were a bunch of bands coming out and having that success, so it was interesting and quite shocking. Swing dancing and ballroom dancing had fallen out of favor. We helped bring back the retro look and fashions.

Our thing was pretty different from everyone else’s. Our sound wasn’t pigeonhole-able. It was a mixture of cabaret, hot jazz, calypso and early American theater music. There was some swing, but we were never really a swing band. We were more of a vaudeville punk rock band.”

The band split up in 2000 and Mathus went on to play with bluesman Buddy Guy. He also opened a studio and started producing other bands.

“I’m probably responsible for over 100 records personally,” he says.

to spearhead a swing revival. But in the wake of Hot, swing and ballroom dancing became popular again along with old-time music recorded on oldtime equipment. Even the fashions came back into vogue.

Phillips’ studio in Memphis when I was 15. I had been around studios a lot. I had two or three record deals before the Zippers. When I had some success, I bought some gear and bought some preamps and ribbon

microphones. I just launched into producing with vintage techniques. It was another facet of the whole puzzle I got into. I enjoyed helping other people bring their music to light. I can help with everything from lyrics to arrangements to you name it. It’s just something that’s part of the whole puzzle.”

Last year, the band reformed and performed its first set of tour dates since 2009. Mathus says the new lineup features some “amazing players.” The group has even started to record a new album too.

“They grew up being turned on by music from bands like us,” he says.

“I have virtuoso players from varied backgrounds in jazz and burlesque and theater and costuming and everything. We have a great crew.

They’re all very talented. The new band members just wanted to do some reunion shows, but I wanted to make a revival. It’s not a style of music that has a shelf life. With new music coming out, I can see us keeping this thing going until the cows come home.

That’s the plan. It’s not just a reunion.

It’s a relaunch, and we have put together an incredible show.”

A STANDUP GUY Andy Biersack talks about hosting this year’s APMAs

EARLIER THIS YEAR, LOCALLY based Alternative Press magazine announced that Black Veil Brides frontman, alt-pop artist and “raconteur extraordinaire” Andy Biersack will host the fourth annual Alternative Press Music Awards, which takes place at The State Theatre on Monday.

In addition to fronting Black Veil Brides, Biersack heads up the alt-pop solo project Andy Black. He’s attended every APMA to date and has displayed his comedic side while touring with his Andy Black project.

Biersack recently phoned us from a hotel in Nashville where he had a day off from the Warped Tour and managed to get a rare “good night’s sleep.” Performing on the tour for the first time since becoming sober, he says it’s become “easier” now that he’s not “getting drunk in 102-degree heat.”

Here’s what he had to say about hosting this year’s awards ceremony.

How’d you get recruited to host this year’s event?

I’ve known [publisher] Mike [Shea] and [editor] Jason [Pettigrew] for quite some time. They’ve been champions of my band and career from the start.

One of the first big headline tours we did of the U.S. was the AP Tour. They put us on the cover of the magazine.

Getting going in the U.S. and getting some press in the U.S. was slower than England where there was a big rock boom. AP was the first magazine to champion the band stateside. Since then, I’ve had a good relationship with them. It’s come up several times in the past that it’s something I might be interested in. They’ve had great hosts in the past, and they were looking to do something different this year. So Mike and Jason came to my solo show in Cleveland. I only have one album.

When you’re doing a headline show, and you only have one album, you only have so many songs you can play. So I did some standup comedy, and the show was kind of half music and half comedy. I only played six or seven songs. It was a good opportunity to talk to fans as segues between songs.

Mike and Jason were excited about the prospect of having me bring that to the awards and offered [the job] to me right there. I was over the moon.

What excites you about the opportunity?

The need for legitimacy in any awards show is paramount. If you go

crew is great, and we’ve never had any technical difficulties. Having said that, I can’t wait for the night of the show when something goes wrong, and you can laugh at me.

Are there some performances you’re really excited to see?

Yes, not only the ones that are announced, but the ones that people don’t know about yet because they are to be announced in the coming days and week. Veteran bands like Korn always bring an intensity to their live performances.

Many of these bands don’t get Grammy nominations. What gives?

Truthfully, there is an element of the hard rock and alternative rock worlds that’s not taken seriously. I don’t know how to describe it. There’s so much life and passion in this scene. The bands that are working hard are doing it right for the right reasons. It’s not like the ’80s when if you had a band that became popular, you would get a million-dollar advance. That doesn’t happen these days. The bands that are out there, for better or worse, are working hard.

Whether the mainstream culture sees it as legitimate or not, I don’t know.

up there as a master of ceremonies and treat it serious, that adds an air of legitimacy to it and keeps it away from becoming a night of drinking and performances that weren’t taken seriously. And that’s not knocking other awards shows. The fans love it, and they have this special night. I’ve been on Warped Tour and heard bands talk about the awards, and I can tell you that it is legitimate. After being out on the tour getting burned by the sun every day, it’s a night for everyone to dress up and really connect with the fans.

What do you do to prepare?

I do a weekly podcast with my

cousin and friend Patrick. It’s a comedy-based show, and I thought it would work best — and thankfully everyone at AP agreed — that since we take on the writing ourselves for the podcast that we would write the script for the APMAs. It comes down to wanting to make sure the script is funny and true to the spirit of the show.

What strategy do you have in place in the event of a technical difficulty?

It’s live television, so you can expect something to come along. I’ve performed at APMAs in so many different capacities that I know the

How has the public’s taste in rock changed?

There are lots of ingredients that go into people’s love of music. In my generation of young kids coming up, I loved the classic rock and punk rock, but for my peers it was seen as passe. Rock was king and then died off because it needed to. It wasn’t about passion or art as much as it was about posture. Having said that, I’m a fan of that era of music. I like it, but I understand why something like grunge came along. The unfortunate thing about grunge is that it killed the fun of rock. At the same time, hip-hop was all about art and fashion.

I can understand why my generation of kids gravitated to that. Think of something like [the musical] Rock of Ages — the punch line is “ha-ha remember rock music.” It does a huge disservice to our genre. Whether these bands get nominated for Grammys or not, we have this now, and it’s something that legitimizes our scene.

the charts” if he wanted to sustain a career. “I guess I don’t know anything,” Joel said with a laugh in front of an enthusiastic capacity crowd that clearly didn’t care that Joel didn’t have any new material (and hasn’t had any new material for something like 20 years) to promote. And Joel didn’t disappoint.

Casually introducing songs and playing spot-on versions of all his hits, he was the consummate showman, even if the only time he got up from the piano and roamed the stage was to strap on an electric guitar for an impromptu cover of AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell” that featured longtime roadie Chainsaw on lead vocals. Though a bit stockier and balder than he appeared during a visit to town in 2009, Joel still sounded great (it helps that he really talks more than he sings) and hasn’t lost a step on the piano. IT’S ABOUT TIME Local singer-songwriter Alexis Antes releases her first new album in 14 years

By Jeff Niesel LOCAL SINGER-SONGWRITER Alexis Antes first performed as a child in the 1970s at Red Horse Hollow, a Lakewood coffeehouse and folk venue that her parents owned.

She co-founded the folk act Odd Girl Out right after high school and launched her solo career in 1996.

Now, she’s just announced details surrounding 13, her third solo album and first release in 14 years.

The press release announcing its release declares that album opener “Fight for a Better Day” serves as an anthem for “anyone struggling with issues of depression, addiction, abuse, self-worth, identity, bullying.”

It’s a righteous tune cut from the same musical cloth as songs by Melissa Etheridge and Ani DiFranco.

The album includes a track written by Alexis’ late mother, Bobbie Antes, and her father, Scott Antes. It also includes a cover of the Fleetwood Mac tune, “Landslide.”

Locally based Jim Wirt (Fiona Apple, Incubus, Brian Setzer, Jacks Mannequin) produced the album at his Superior Sound recording studios.

“Alexis is great! She’s a terrific songwriter and performer, and I loved working on this record with her,” says Wirt in the press release.

“I’m proud to have it alongside all of the other work I’ve done in my career.”

Wirt, who also played bass on the record, will perform at the release party that takes place at 7:30 p.m. on

LOCAL SINGER-SONGWRITER JESEA LEE MAKES HIS DEBUT Like so many of us, Clevelandbased indie-pop songwriter Jesea Lee deals with anxiety. He has channeled his frustrations into “TV Glow,” the first single from his forthcoming debut EP Sleepspent. With its shimmering guitars and piano melody, it recalls the indie rock act the National.

“This song is about those sleepless nights when you just sort of replay and overthink things,” says Lee in a press release announcing the album’s release. “That’s kind of a running theme throughout the whole record. There’s a little bit of angst and love, as well. All things most people nearing 30 probably feel, ha.”

The guitarist for the now defunct punk band One Days Notice, Lee started to write songs for a solo album after the band split up last year.

The album comes out Friday.

Lee, who plays a CD release party on Saturday at the Five O’Clock Lounge in Lakewood, will donate all proceeds from album sales to the American Cancer Society.
