UPFRONT STAFFING AND VIOLENCE CONCERNS SIMMER AT COUNTY JAIL

THIS WEEK

ON JAN. 17, 2016, CUYAHOGA County Jail corrections officer Matthew Norman was assaulted by an inmate while double podded. That practice, which has been under fire by corrections officers and their union for years, has one guard watching two pods housing as many as 96 inmates in total. (The entire jail holds about 2,000 inmates.) Though an arbitrator had ruled back in 1997 that double podding created unsafe working conditions, the county satisfied components of the ruling by installing “roving” officers, and the practice has gone on, despite the fact that as far back as 2011 officers told the Plain Dealer that the roving officer policy had “gone by the wayside.”

Though officials and experts say that double podding is an acceptable standard and itself not a direct cause of assaults on officers, it’s still a longburning (as in decades, not months) point of contention for guards who say that the safety of employees and inmates is at risk because of the practice.

In the January 2016, in the case of the attack on Norman, the officer was conducting a chow pass while double podded. An inmate, Timothy

Clark, started tossing verbal insults at Norman and refused his orders to return to his cell. Clark slapped at Norman’s arm. The two then tussled.

Clark got Norman in a bear hug and took Norman to the ground, where he started choking the officer.

Images after the fact show abrasions to Norman’s neck. The officer was thankfully able to flip over and escape Clark’s grasp long enough to activate an alarm (P.A.T.) on a radio that had previously fallen from his reach during the assault.

environment and tensions for them and staff.

The locks themselves are also a safety issue. Inmates in Jail Two are able to pop the locks of some cell doors using spoons, we now know, thanks to video from inside the facility. Officers say that faulty locks and doors are simply not replaced or fixed and that they can also be opened simply by kicking them. With tensions high, inmates have been popping their cell doors in recent weeks and fighting.

As a solution, inmates are no longer allowed to have spoons, a county spokesperson told Fox 8, who added that maintenance claims have only found one faulty lock during a recent inspection.

One former county jail guard, Robert Jackson, sued the county back in 2012 claiming that officials ignored safety concerns, specifically double podding, which he says led to injuries he sustained while trying to break up a brawl between inmates. The Plain Dealer at the time found 100 or so incidents of inmates assaulting or fighting with guards during a twoyear period.

Sure, the radio allowed for an alarm to be sent, eventually, but if Norman hadn’t been able to reach his radio, things could have gone disastrously differently.

Guards remain concerned that incidents like this one, and others that have occurred throughout the year that remain under investigation, are in fact a direct result of the county’s staffing choices.

(Many additional incidents that Scene is aware of are currently under open investigation by the county and thus full records are not yet available.)

END OF AN ERA Cleveland Bishop Richard Lennon has announced his early retirement.

Due to his declining health, Lennon sent a letter to Pope Francis in late November asking that he be relieved of duty, and the Pope has honored that request.

Lennon said at a press conference last week that he’d been diagnosed with vascular dementia.

Lennon arrived via Boston, and has served as leader of the Cleveland Catholic Diocese for more than 10 years. He presided over a tumultuous era of church closures (and reopenings) from 2010 to 2012. It was an era that embittered many local Catholics toward Lennon, particularly those from urban and ethnic parishes who felt targeted by the bishop’s consolidation strategies.

Lennon maintained that the church closures were financially motivated, and that many of the urban parishes he’d closed had become,

Lennon will be replaced in an interim capacity by Bishop Daniel Edward Thomas, who currently serves as the bishop of the Diocese of Toledo.

Thomas will split his time between both cities until a permanent bishop is appointed. Thomas’ official title will be Apostolic Administrator. That’s the same role that Lennon held in Boston after Cardinal Bernard Law repaired to Rome in the wake of the sex abuse scandal there.

During remarks at Wednesday’s press conference, Thomas, 57, a native of Metro Philadelphia, said he intended to “hit the ground running” in governing and shepherding the Northeast Ohio flock. Because he’d only been informed of his appointment recently, he said he was unfamiliar with the major issues confronting the diocese, but certainly had no trouble referencing the Cavs’ championship, the Indians’ procession to a “magnificent” Game 7 in the World Series, the RNC and the “Christmas miracle” of the Browns’ first win.

He said he was “grateful for the opportunity” to serve, and that local Catholics could rest assured he would be a “humble, holy, and

Each December since then, John has gathered some of the best and brightest comic artists from around Northeast Ohio to produce the first issue of the upcoming year — a celebration of the region’s vast talent, a chance to commission work usually not found in these pages, an opportunity to again demonstrate that comics are a medium capable of showing and telling at the same time. The movie follows the guys as they try to spot the Pinkfooted Goose, the Crested Myna and other rare species. During that time, he’s shared the stage with national acts such as Eddie Griffin, Bruce Bruce, Snoop Dogg and Patti Labelle. The rowdy, fast-talking comedian regularly punctuates his live show with singing and dancing as he brings an excessive amount of energy to the stage. He performs tonight at 7:30 at the Improv. Doctor Strange One of the year’s top-grossing movies, Doctor Strange stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange, a brilliant surgeon who becomes incapacitated after a horrible car accident renders him unable to keep his hands steady enough to return to the operating room. In the wake of the event, he takes a journey to find an alternative method to heal his body and becomes a master of the mystic arts in the process. The film screens tonight at 6 at the Dome Theatre in the Great Lakes Science Center, which will show a 6-K print of the movie. Beer, wine and other concessions will be available. The subtitled version shows tonight; the English-dubbed version shows at 7 on Monday night. In addition to the feature, audiences will see the 1995 Miyazaki-directed music video for “On Your Mark,” a tune by the Japanese rock duo Chage & Aska.

The Cleveland Orchestra In the era prior to World War II, several composers headed to Hollywood to escape Europe’s tumultuous climate. Rhapsody in Blue, tonight’s concert at Severance Hall featuring the Cleveland Orchestra, explores the works of three of these composers who took their talents overseas. Tonight at 7:30, the orchestra will perform pieces by Arnold Schoenberg, Béla Bartók and Bernard Herrmann.

You’ll also hear Gershwin’s everpopular Rhapsody in Blue in its original jazz band version. Tickets start at $29, and performances also

Up This Hill Recognized as the Best Feature Film at the 2016 Glass City Film Festival and included as an official selection of the 2016 Cleveland Urban Film Festival, the Montreal Cinefest, the Hong Kong Arthouse Film Festival and New York Film Week, Up This Hill documents the trip a group of Northeast Ohio teenagers take to Harlan, Kentucky, to perform service work and learn about rural poverty. Tonight at 7 at the Cedar Lee Theatre, Open Doors Academy hosts a free screening of the movie. The film’s director Paul Sobota recently received a Creative Workforce Fellowship. Josh Wolf Comedian, actor, and New York Times bestselling author, Josh Wolf does a bit of everything. He received some serious national exposure thanks to regular appearances on the round table of E!’s late-night talk show Chelsea Lately. In his book, It Takes Balls: Dating Single Moms and Other Confessions from an Unprepared Dad, he writes about the trials and tribulations of fatherhood.

Deon Cole Deon Cole is from Chicago’s Southside and he tells it like it is. A regular on Conan, he created Black Box, which aired for a short time on TBS. His roots are pretty humble: A friend bet him $50 that he was too chicken to get up on stage at a club one night, and the rest is history. He talks about racial issues in a charismatic way, often taking a fresh perspective on issues that have been talked about so many times before. His humor is a little reminiscent of Chris Rock; he often takes on social issues some would rather pretend don’t exist, and crafts them into pointed storylines. STAGE A DANDY DOZEN Twelve productions that stood out from 2016

By Christine Howey LISTING AWARDS FOR “BEST This or That” is always a fool’s errand — especially for a critic who was in Provincetown for a quarter of the season. But here are 12 productions from 2016 that easily cleared the bar for being entertaining, professional, and just plain wonderful. They are listed alphabetically by title: All the Way, Cleveland Play House Director Giovanna Sardelli and actor Steve Vinovich crafted a sly and sometimes disgusting portrait of President Lyndon Baines Johnson in this intriguing piece by Robert Schenkkan. And thanks to Robert Mark Morgan’s simple and elegant set, it all played out with style.

An Octoroon, Dobama Theatre This adventurous play about race,

by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, was given a startling production by Dobama under the direction of Nathan Motta.

Highlights included Ananias Dixon’s tour-de-force turn in two roles, one black and one white, and Anjanette Hall as the petticoated barracuda named Dora.

Beauty Queen of Leenane, None Too Fragile The audience is almost on top of the stage at this theater, and that added to the punch of this script by the renowned Martin McDonagh. Derdriu Ring and Anne McEvoy as mom and daughter danced around each other like scorpions, exposing their shattered dreams for all to see.

Blues in the Night, Karamu The blues reigned supreme in this lushly designed show, under the direction of Reggie Kelly. Susan Hughes, Nicole Sumlin and Michele Edwards-Whitfield sang the bejeezus out of blues standards such as “Reckless Blues” and “Rough and Ready Man.” Cabaret, Blank Canvas Theatre It was chilling to revisit pre-war Berlin in this riveting production of the Kander and Ebb classic. Director Patrick Ciamacco hit all the right notes, and the performances by the entire cast were specific and intense.

Fun Home, Playhouse Square Composer Jeanine Tesori and book author/lyricist Lisa Kron turned the eponymous graphic novel by Alison Bechdel into a deep and engaging look at identity and family dynamics

involving, in part, a lesbian daughter and her closeted dad. This touring show found all the emotion with perfection.

Lanford Wilson’s Take Five, Cesear’s Forum Director Greg Cesear and his cast nailed five short plays by Wilson, performing with ensemble skill and individual excellence.

Margin of Error, Ensemble Theatre When Michael Mauldin walked on stage as the bloodthirsty political operative in this tense and witty effort by local playwright Eric Coble, it was an ideal match. As directed by Eric Schmiedl, and supported by MaryFrances Renee Miller as his aide Daphne, Mauldin captured our current political horror show.

Mr. Burns, Cleveland Public Theatre Based on The Simpsons, this risktaking production directed by Matthew Wright had it all, including some opera, an irradiated and homicidal Mr. Burns, and pop culture references galore. Not all of it worked, but the parts that did were glorious.

My Fair Lady, Great Lakes Theater There’s nothing better than a classic musical done with professional verve. Director Victoria Bussert and her talented cast, with Jillian Kates as Eliza, landed all the songs and much of the comedy — all suffused with the beauty of Jeff Herrmann’s luscious set.

Next to Normal, TrueNorth Cultural Arts Director Fred Sternfeld took this show, which had been brilliantly done a couple times locally, and added one more star to that record. As the mom dealing with mental illness, Kristin Netzband was a bundle of confusion and determination. And she was matched by Rick McGuigan as her husband.

Proof, Clague Playhouse Old-fashioned storytelling about a declining math genius won the day in this play by David Auburn. It was highlighted by some fine acting: Rachel Lee Kolis as a simmering, frustrated daughter of the math god, and Robert Hawkes as the father facing undeniable proof of dementia.

MOVIES REVENGE 2.0 – ARTHOUSE EDITION Paul Verhoeven’s Elle offers new take on rape-revenge thriller

By Jeff Niesel THE RAPE-REVENGE MOVIES OF the ’70s followed a fairly standard formula.

In the wake of a gruesome rape, the victim would rehabilitate herself and then prepare to take vengeance on her attacker and just about any other man who treated women poorly.

A veritable bloodbath would ensue.

Elle, the new psychological thriller from always-controversial director Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Basic Instinct) follows that formula — to an extent.

The movie opens with a grisly rape scene. As far as the “revenge” goes, viewers must wait nearly until the movie’s end for any kind of payback.

Isabelle Huppert (Amour), who plays the film’s central character, Michele Leblanc, delivers a compelling performance as a woman profoundly damaged by her murderous father (the guy went on a rampage, killing men, women and children — and even animals — when she was a child). But the

movie’s main message is a mixed one likely to leave viewers perplexed.

Based on the 2012 Philippe Djian novel Oh..., the film commences with a graphic scene in which a masked assailant breaks into Michele’s home and throws her to the ground.

Despite Michele’s struggles, the guy forces himself upon her.

In the wake of the crime, Michele takes herself to the hospital where she asks the doctor to test her for sexually transmitted diseases. Once released, she carries on as if nothing happened, though her attacker taunts her with text messages. When she announces during a dinner out

with her friends that she was raped, one of them even remarks later about how odd it is that she simply “soldiers on” in its aftermath.

As the film progresses, we learn more about what compels the enigmatic Michele, a woman who refuses to talk to her imprisoned father and maintains a difficult relationship with her mother.

The head of a successful video game company, Michele ironically promotes pushing the limits of the graphic sex and violence in the games her employees develop. In the wake of her rape, she becomes even more insistent on the matter.

Separated from her husband, she grows jealous of his new girlfriend, a young yoga teacher. And she has trouble convincing her son that his girlfriend isn’t the right woman for him. All the while, she’s carrying on an affair with her best friend’s husband, Robert. Her value system is a mess.

Verhoeven has said the movie’s central theme revolves around female empowerment. But given the way the “revenge” takes place in such a roundabout manner at the movie’s conclusion, that message is muddled at best.

In some ways, Elle might function as the art house update of the rape revenge flick; but we prefer the visceral (and much more straightforward) take on the subject matter offered up by cult classics such as I Spit on Your Grave and Ms. 45.

SPOTLIGHT: A MONSTER CALLS A MONSTER CALLS, THE HEARTBREAKING fairytale that opens Friday, will make you cry a lot harder than Rogue One. That’s because it’s a better movie. Both star Felicity Jones, but only in A Monster Calls does one recognize her as the marvelous talent who was nominated for an Academy Award two years back for The Theory of Everything.

Jones plays the mother of a boy named Connor (Lewis MacDougall), and she is dying.

To help him cope with his impending loss, Connor conjures a tree-monster, an ent-like beast with glowing bark, voiced by Liam Neeson.

In his waking hours, Connor suffers the tense preparations for his mother’s death, though no one tells him what’s actually going on: He moves in with his stern grandma (Sigourney Weaver) while his mother stays at the hospital for last-ditch treatment options; he gets a visit from his father, now living in America (Toby Kebbell), and he sustains repeated beatings by bullies at school. Connor is a loner who spends most of his time with his nose in a sketchpad.

In his imagination, the Monster visits

Connor and tells him three tales, tales which are meant (we know) to help him understand the senselessness of what’s happening to his mom and the tumult of the emotions inside him. Voiced by Neeson, the tales are brought to animated life onscreen by director J.A.

Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible) and visual effects supervisor Felix Berges; they’re somewhat reminiscent of the animated Deathly Hallows sequence in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 1.

Much more visually impressive is the Monster itself, created using a hybrid of computer animation and animatronics. One

can somehow see Neeson in the movement and expressions of the tree — no accident, given that its movements were influenced by motion capture work prior to principal cinematography. Though partly animated, the Monster interacts with Connor and the real world in a way that seems more authentic than with many other on-screen hybrids, where you can tell actors are performing a scene without a partner and a CGI character is inserted in postproduction.

The movie soars, though, on the backs of the lead performances by Jones and young MacDougall. This is deeply sad material, but in their hands it never feels too grating or overwrought. Jones conveys not only the anger at the injustice of her illness, but the terror and the guilt of abandoning her only son.

MacDougall highlights not only the despair of losing a parent, but the rage directed at the parent, and the secret impatience with the tragedy.

WELCOME HOME Jo Jo Carloni’s Italian Restaurant serves up red-sauce comfort in Olmsted Falls, and will soon be doing the same in Ohio City

By Douglas Trattner ALTHOUGH WE ALL LIVED 20 miles or more away, as soon as we landed inside Jo Jo Carloni’s Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria in Olmsted Falls, we immediately felt like neighborhood regulars.

Despite its zip code, the snug space had all the Old World charm of our favorite spag-and-ball joints in Little Italy, where descriptors like “gourmet” and “trendy” are replaced by “hearty” and “comforting” and “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing.”

I normally don’t drive 40 minutes across town to dine at small-town Italian-American restaurants regardless of how good they sound.

But when I learned that owners John and Jennifer Minkiewicz had been tapped to open up a new place in the splashy West 25th Street Lofts development in the heart of Ohio City, I rearranged my schedule, rounded up some friends, and made the trip.

At approximately 150 seats (not counting courtyard dining and private event space), the new joint will dwarf the original 30-seat spot when it opens this spring or summer. When it does open, I hope the restaurant retains the look, feel and appeal of the four-year-old gem down south. From the red-and-white checked tablecloths with “Map of Italia” placemats to the bouncy black booths festooned with decorative

Chianti bottles in straw baskets, Jo Jo’s is a classic red-sauce joint with bona fide cred.

Given the diminutive footprint, it doesn’t take long to meet the hospitable owners, who are eager to guide this group of first-timers through the short beer and wine list, tick off the most popular entrees, and deliver a plate of warm housemade rolls glistening with garlic butter. Owner John points to a matching pair of faded black-andwhite photos to reveal a pedigree that is equal parts Italian and Polish.

vinaigrette on the sweet side. Swap the salad for the wedding soup if you want something hot and savory (though lacking meatballs).

Pizzas, made with fresh dough, come in three different crusts and four different sizes. In between the thin crust and deep dish is original, a Cleveland-style pie that is thick, doughy and cheesy in all the right places. The small is an ideal size for four to split as an appetizer. Loaded with Italian and chorizo sausages and diced hot peppers, Divo’s Hot Pepper ($14) has a welcome kick to balance the sweet, tangy sauce.

Meals here still come with bread, salad or soup, but it’s always a good idea to sample the appetizers.

Starters like sausage-stuffed banana peppers ($9) and stuffed eggplant ($8) reveal the owners’ commitment to tradition and simplicity. Thin slices of eggplant are breaded by hand, rolled around herbed ricotta cheese, sauced with marinara, and baked until the cap of provolone and mozzarella is good and melted.

Jo Jo’s has a broad and deep catalog of Italian-American pastas, baked casseroles and meat-based entrees. One of the few house-made pasta dishes, the thick-walled ravioli ($12) come filled with meat or cheese and topped with marinara. For an extra couple of bucks you can swap the red sauce for creamy Alfredo or vodka sauce. In the baked manicotti ($13), large pasta tubes are filled with herbed ricotta, topped with marinara and cheese, and baked.

Both pasta dishes came to the table less than hot, perhaps because they were waiting for the veal Marsala

($17), which did arrive piping hot. The veal cutlets were breaded and pan-fried and laid on a bed of linguine. A rich and creamy wine sauce with mushrooms covered the tender meat and pasta.

At lunchtime, a scaled-down menu offers all the pizzas along with a few pastas and sandwiches like a meatball sub or a hot Italian with cheese.

Desserts like homemade cheesecake, tiramisu and cannoli are available all day long.

As the principal food service operator at the West 25th Street Lofts, Jo Jo’s will be the home restaurant for the tenants of the 85 or so apartments as well as the surrounding neighborhood. While Ohio City is ground central for dining these days, there is a surprising lack of oldfashioned Italian-American places.

Bruno’s immediately comes to mind, but that’s a good two miles away. If Jo Jo’s doesn’t stray too far from its current routine of providing large portions of comfort-food chestnuts for a more-than-reasonable price, they should be welcomed warmly.

They might want to beef up the beer and wine lists, which are paltry by modern standards, but that’s about as far as they’ll need to push things.

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR: PRETTY soon you won’t be able to un-hear words like “detox,” “cleanse” and “diet.” With 2017 just beginning, we all want to live up to our New Year’s resolutions, and one of the most common is devoting yourself to a healthier lifestyle. While many claim that their elixirs are an all-in-one way to reboot, there is one local business that stands out with a realistic approach that incorporates healthy eating with mental and physical well-being too.

Originally from New Jersey, Muhammad Edwards became a clean-eating advocate while playing basketball throughout college in Miami. After school, Edwards moved to Cleveland with a few fraternity brothers looking to invest in real estate. He soon found out that being a landlord wasn’t his cup of tea, although he did fall in love with the city, using it as home base for his developing line of “action” juices.

Edwards started his business, Fawaky Burst Juice Company (4441 Mayfield Rd., 216-438-3289, fawakyburst.com), two years ago, selling cold-pressed juices in bulk to neighborhood gas stations stuck in the middle of food deserts.

“It was the middle of the winter, we’ve got on snowsuits, big thick coats, and I’m walking up to people in the parking lot asking them, ‘Do you want to buy a healthy juice?’”

Edwards laughs.

The menu has expanded since those transient days thanks to the addition of a storefront in South Euclid. But one thing hasn’t changed: “fawaky,” which translates to “fruit” in Arabic, still is the main ingredient. In addition to bottled cold-pressed and blended juices available in flavors like Pineapple-Ginger and Lemon Lime Mojito, there is a line of five detox beverages designed for three-day juice fasts. Edwards will customize the detox order to suit your personal preference.

If you crave something solid, Fawaky also serves wholesome made-to-order eats like omelets, whole wheat French toast and pancakes, along with grilled spinach wraps, lean turkey paninis, rice bowls and salads.

Online videos capture customers throwing back shots of wheatgrass to boost energy and reduce high blood pressure, lemon juice to reduce bloating and strengthen the immune system, and ginger juice to prevent cancer and reduce inflammation — just like folks pounding shots at a bar. A poster hanging near the walk-up counter reminds everyone that, “You are what you drink.”

Inside the eatery, suggestively tropical decor will brighten your day. “I thought it would be the best way to introduce my product to the people, because everybody wants to believe that they’re in the Bahamas or somewhere hot!” Edwards says.

A large mural depicting sliced fruits takes up an entire wall, while leather-topped wooden barrels and driftwood-like benches populate the dining area. Everything is pushed aside at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays for yoga, when a $10 donation earns you a challenging practice and a smoothie at the conclusion of class.

Several nights a month the space hosts free open-mic nights.

“I took a little bit of what I experienced in Miami and I brought it to Cleveland,” Edwards says, clutching a whole pineapple hollowed out to hold one of his signature smoothies. The smoothies are garnished with fresh berries and fruit, with the container and its contents being completely edible (save for the skin). A testament to his product, the self-proclaimed “Juiceman” can easily list the healing benefits of each fruit and vegetable thrown into the blender; all you have to do is ask.

EAT BYE BYE BONBON Ohio City pastry shop to become Aladdin’s Eatery spinoff Boaz Cafe

By Douglas Trattner COURTNEY BONNING HAS sold Bonbon Pastry & Cafe, her 5-yearold Ohio City business, to Fady Chamoun of Aladdin’s Eatery.

Bonbon closed its doors after New Year’s Eve, and Chamoun will reopen the space as Boaz Cafe by Aladdin’s Eatery as soon as Jan. 2, 3 or 4, depending on what needs to be done.

“I am a big supporter of Cleveland neighborhoods,” Chamoun says. “I’ve wanted to do something closer to downtown for a while.”

The menu at Boaz Cafe will look familiar to fans of Aladdin’s Eatery, but it will be more narrowly focused around a core selection of fresh, fast and healthy Middle Eastern eats, he notes. The all- or largely organic menu will have hummus, baba, tabouli, fattoush, falafel and shawarma sandwiches. There also will be fresh fruit juices and smoothies. Down the line, grab-andgo items like salads, spreads and sandwiches might be added.

Unfortunately for the neighborhood, Boaz will not serve breakfast like its predecessor.

“I really love what Courtney did there,” Chamoun says. “I feel bad for the customers that are so used to eating breakfast there that have no other choice now. I feel bad but I don’t know how to do breakfast like she did. She did a great job with breakfast. I respect her.”

As for Bonning, this sale was exactly what she wanted.

“I’m so pumped,” she says.

“It’s really cool to own your own restaurant but I still feel like there are a lot of other things I want to try. I wasn’t one of those restaurant groups where I could step away. It’s always been just me. If I stepped away from Bonbon for any length of time, it wouldn’t continue going.”

Next up for Bonning is a new venture with partner Lauren Krueger. On track to open this time

next year is a bakery incubator both similar to and different from other food-based incubator spaces like Cleveland Culinary Launch & Kitchen. Located in the St. Clair Superior neighborhood, the space will be outfitted specifically for pas con and cho and str

You’ll have a specific workspace that is completely devoted to you, but then you have use of the larger

mixers and sheeters and ovens — the things you can’t afford.”

A large catering kitchen will be rentable by the week for folks preparing for a large event. The space will also be used for teaching demos and private events.

“I’m so grateful and it’s been an awesome ride, but it’s just time for something new and different,” Bonning says.

COMING SOON: SAMMICH SANDWICH SHOP IN NORTH COLLINWOOD Randy Carter, chef-owner of Jack Flaps in Ohio City and Jack Flaps Luncheonette in the 5th Street Arcades, will open a qualitydriven sandwich shop in the North Collinwood neighborhood of Cleveland. Sammich (651 East 185th St., 216-350-6888, sammich.co) is taking over the property previously occupied by Old World Meats, which closed a couple years back following a devastating fire.

“Both of the Jack Flaps restaurants are really busy and they’re both small spaces,” Carter explains. “We can’t fit all the foods we need to prep and store so I was looking for a production facility where I could do some of that stuff.”

What he landed on was a 7,000-square-foot building with an Old-World smokehouse, deli cases and plenty of the room needed to produce all the items slated for his Jack Flaps restaurants.

While the production portion of the operation will take some time to fully sort out, the carryout sandwich shop should be up and running in about six weeks. The sandwiches will all be built around quality meats that are roasted, braised, cured and/or smoked in house.

“Sandwiches have never left, but I think over the course of the corporate takeover of America we’ve lost quality in our sandwiches and in our products,” Carter says. “You’re not getting those great flavors and unique differences. The idea is to do something fresh and unique.”

The shop has adopted a pugilistic theme, with sandwiches all taking the names of marquee boxers. The Lewis combines Cajun turkey breast, lettuce, tomato, bacon mayo and cheese, while the “Gorilla” Jones features cured country sausage, ham, grilled peppers and onions, bacon mayo and a pickled egg. The Marciano is a classic Italian stack of capicola, sopressata, lettuce, tomato, onion, provolone, pickled cherry peppers and tomato vinaigrette.

CINCINNATI’S BAD TOM SMITH TO OPEN SMALL BREWERY/ TAPROOM IN OHIO CITY There’s been chatter on the street that Bad Tom Smith Brewing Co., a small Cincinnati-based brewery, was looking to plant a flag in Ohio City. The plan, as laid out by the Cincinnati Business Courier this summer, was for owner John Vojtush to ultimately open taprooms in Louisville, Dayton, Pittsburgh, Eastern Kentucky and Northeast Ohio.

Now we know when — and where — that Northeast Ohio taproom will open.

Local operator Stephen Fellows said that the process of converting Weenie a Go Go (1836 West 25th St.), a former hot dog diner, into a small brewery and taproom has already begun. The goal is to be open and pouring by St. Patrick’s Day. When it opens, Bad Tom Smith will be brewing beer on site on a four-vessel, three-barrel system as well as shipping in beer from its Cincinnati brewery. Bad Tom’s Cincy-based master brewer will work with a crew of local brewers.

NOW OPEN: ZOMA ETHIOPIAN Zoma Ethiopian Restaurant opened last week in Cleveland Heights (2240 Lee Rd., 216-4653239).

Ethiopian cuisine is characterized both by its unique flavors and its communal presentation, a familystyle approach with multiple items arriving on a large platter.

Vegetable, grain, meat and fishbased stews, some of which are spicy, are scooped up and eaten with small pieces of injera, a spongy flatbread made from fermented teff batter.

“I’m eager to share the food and how to eat it with people,” says owner Zeleke Belete.

Doro wat, perhaps the most familiar dish, is a spicy chickenbased stew made with berbere, a fiery spice blend. Derek tibs, which Belete will serve in a crock over an open flame, is a flavorful beef stirfry with garlic, onion, tomato and rosemary.

TWO FOR ONE Camper Van Beethoven/Cracker double bill rolls into town for the very first time

By Jeff Niesel AFTER BELOVED INDIE ROCKERS Camper Van Beethoven broke up in the late ’80s, singer-guitarist David Lowery approached childhood friend Johnny Hickman about starting a new band.

The duo began writing songs together and even played a few shows as the David Lowery Group before forming the alt-rock act Cracker with drummer Greg Weatherford (since replaced by Coco Owens) and bassist Davey Faragher (since replaced by Bryan Howard).

The current Cracker lineup also includes Matt “Pistol” Stoessel on pedal steel and Thayer Sarrano, who sometimes tours with the band, on keys and backing vocals.

Then, after Camper Van Beethoven reunited a few years ago, Lowery started taking both bands out on the road. He’d play a set with Camper and follow it up with a set with Cracker.

“Back in 2000 or 2001, Camper Van Beethoven wasn’t officially

reformed but [bassist] Victor [Krummenacher] from Camper Van Beethoven had been playing bass with us,” Lowery explains in a recent phone interview. “When we were on the West Coast, we thought we’d add [multi-instrumentalist] Jonathan [Segel], so we did a set with Camper songs mixed in. We started calling it the Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker Apothecary Tour.”

Once Camper reformed, the group played some after-Christmas shows on the West Coast and in the Bay Area, and “people seemed to like it,” as Lowery puts it.

“We decided to make it a tradition every year,” he explains. “It’s been going on for at least 13 years now and has now extended into January.

We were doing the West Coast as the Apothecary Tour and then started doing the East Coast and doing D.C., Philly, Toronto and Boston on MLK weekend. Now, we just string it all together. It’s sort of a U.S. tour that goes from San Diego

up to Minneapolis and then to the East Coast. Some years, we go to St. Louis, and I think we’ve been to Detroit. It might have been Grand Rapids.”

The two bands have never played Cleveland together, but they will both perform at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 8, at the Music Box Supper Club.

When Camper Van Beethoven initially came together in 1983, the music scene in Redlands, California, where the band was based, didn’t have much going for it.

“We were it for the music scene,” says Lowery. “It was us and Johnny Hickman’s band. It wasn’t until we got to Santa Cruz that we started playing more and basically figured out that we could work together. We were all in other bands, and then we figured that Camper Van Beethoven was more popular than our other more serious bands.”

Lowery says the members of Camper played in vaguely postpunk bands before coming together

to form Camper. The band quickly found a club it could call home in the southern part of Santa Cruz at a place called O.T. Price’s Music Hall, a local country bar.

“They would do local indie bands that had any sort of folk appeal to them,” Lowery says when asked about the club. “Camper became a regular there. Cracker grew out of there too. We were playing alongside people who were doing more traditional country. It was amazing.

It would have been called alt-country back then. Rank N File and Terry Allen and all these Southwest weirdo hippie country writers who came in there. We bumped into all that stuff. It was an eclectic scene there, so Camper makes sense if you were there. It seems weirder if you weren’t. We were a natural thing to grow out of that scene.”

The band’s first underground hit, “Take the Skinheads Bowling,” features a jangly guitar riff and Lowery’s distinctively nasally, high| clevescene.com | January 4 - 10, 2017

“The idea in my head was that music was really serious in 1983 and 1984,” says Lowery when asked what inspired the tune. “No matter what style it was, every song had meaning.

Even if you were playing hair metal, you had to really mean what you were doing. Music wasn’t always like that. There has been a playfulness in popular music. The song was a reaction to what was going on. It’s designed so that each line undermines the previous line. You’re not supposed to form a meaning from what I say in the song.”

In the wake of the success of its first three albums, the band signed a deal with Virgin Records, delivering two terrific albums before splitting up while it was in the midst of a European tour.

“It’s not like Fleetwood Mac where the band had a big fiery blow up,” says Lowery about what caused the split.

“We basically, in late ’88 or ’89, got rid of Jonathan [Segel], and he had a solo thing. Victor [Krummenacher] and Greg [Lisher] had Monks of Doom along with David A. Immerglück. It was splitting into little pieces and ended with a dull sort of nothing.

Different people had different ideas about what the band should be and what we should do, and nobody wanted to fight it.”

After Camper split, Lowery reconnected with Hickman. The two had jammed off and on in the past and they had known one another for a very long time.

“The thing about the first album is that people forget that even though our songs were played on alternative rock radio, the first record was super roots oriented. Our A&R guy Mark Williams was pretty supportive of us, but he did call me and say, ‘I like this record, but are you sure you want to put out a country rock record when there was grunge and the Manchester sound stuff?’ It did not seem like we knew what we were doing.”

The album delivered a hit with the sarcastic first single “Teen Angst (What the World Needs Now).”

“And then, we had this other stuff that came out like Counting Crows and we make more sense in the context of that and what came later,” says Lowery. “But with that first album, we were really rolling the dice.”

Camper reformed in 1999, secretly re-recording Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk album and manufacturing a fake story about how the band recorded it in 1987 and the tapes were lost.

The group also released what it said was an oddities album of lost tracks when in fact many of the tunes were newly recorded.

“This is the way the band thinks,” says Lowery. “We just didn’t want to tell anyone we were back together, but we put clues throughout the record. There were backward strings from a Cracker song. People weren’t buying it after awhile and then we more or less reformed. That was the gag.”

“He was the guy I knew who was really comfortable with the country rock or whatever we called it then,” says Lowery. “He was comfortable with that stuff. We knew what we were approximately doing, and we knew it would be eclectic like Camper, but we were trying to stay more mixing rock and psychedelic and punk with the Americana stuff because that was where our interests overlapped. It was kind of silly, but we wanted to make a good roots rock album.”

That was during the height of grunge and when the band’s debut came out, it won an MTV Music Awards nomination for best new band, along with acts such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam, “and we

out a slew of new studio releases.

But now, neither act has put out anything new in almost three years.

Lowery was non-committal when asked if the new year would bring new music.

“We exhausted a lot of the music we were working on and then we toured and did 125 days on the road,” he says. “We emptied the war chest between the five discs that both bands released. I don’t like to put stuff out that’s not a great concept that engages me as a listener as well as an artist. When we have something, we have something.”

Melissa Etheridge talks about the soul and R&B classics on her latest effort

By Jeff Niesel HUSKY VOICED SINGER-GUITARIST Melissa Etheridge, who grew up in Leavenworth, Kansas, likes to say that her voice always had a raspy quality. “I remember my choir teacher used to put me in the back row of the choir because I had such a strange voice,” she told us in a 2014 interview.

Her experience in the choir notwithstanding, she originally gravitated toward country music, and when she was a teenager, she cut her musical teeth playing with local country groups. After a short stint at Berklee College of Music, she moved to Los Angeles and hit the coffeehouse circuit. Her 1993 album, Yes I Am, became a huge hit, and she’s never looked back.

Now, the pop/rock star has turned her attention to the Stax catalog.

Her latest effort, Memphis Rock and Soul, features covers of classic tunes from the days when Stax acts ruled the charts. In a recent phone interview from a tour stop, she talked about each tune on the album.

“Memphis Train” Oh man, that’s one of the last songs we recorded for the album.

I hadn’t had that on my short list of songs. It was so hard to decide which songs because there are so many amazing Stax songs. It was the last day of recording, and we had done all the songs I wanted to do. There were a couple that were thrown out that I thought didn’t work. John Burk, the head of Concord, who was co-producing the album with me, said, “What about this song?” He played Rufus Thomas’ “Memphis Train,” and I could feel that beat. It was awesome. I didn’t have a clue what he was singing about, but it was cool and fun. We worked up our own arrangement of it. I went in there, and I sang it and played the harmonica and had a blast. It sets the whole album up. I really love it.

Some of the lyrics were, “ ... thinking that a woman is made to be beat on and treated so bad.” I didn’t want to sing that. I reworked the lyrics and slowed it down. Instead of a man cheating on a woman, I made it about anyone cheating on anyone

“Any Other Way” That was a song that was a William Bell song from the early ’60s or late ’50s that was a lot faster. It was kind of a doo woop-y kind of song. So many of my favorite rock ’n’ roll artists would take those songs and rewrite them and make them their own and slow them down. I wanted to take it and slow it down and make it mine.

I did that and it came to the solo and it was last minute and I had my slide guitar so I did that.

“I’m a Lover” “I’m a Lover” was the other song that I had the masters to. The original was a song called “Tramp” by Otis Redding and Carla Thomas where they trade spoken parts back and forth. I loved the beat and the track of the song so much. I took their vocals off and left Otis singing, “Oh, I’m a lover” and rewrote it around that. It’s kind of fun.

“Rock Me Baby” That’s Otis Redding’s version of it.

I know B.B. King has a version too.

You trace the song back, and there’s no beginning there. John Mayer is playing guitar on it, and it’s a lot of fun.

“I Forgot to Be Your Lover” That’s Lester again with the string arrangements. Michael Toles on the guitar brings a tear to my eye. His playing is so beautiful.

Yourself.” The background singers are the Staple Singers and the band is the Muscle Shoals Swampers. I went in with the utmost honor and respect, so I could rework the perfect song. The song was so important during its time. I called in Priscilla Renea to help me rewrite some of the lyrics and update it. I wanted that thought. The only way we can get respect is if we respect ourselves.

We have to now walk through this situation in front of us.

“Who’s Making Love” It’s a Jonny Taylor song from the ’70s. It’s a lot faster than I did it, and the lyrics were by Bettye Crutcher.

She had written, “Who’s making love to your old lady while you were out making love.” I thought that if I sang that, I don’t know if people will

else. I took gender out of it.

“Hold On, I’m Coming” I have always loved that song. It’s got to be one of my top three songs of all time. When I looked at it, I didn’t know how to do it, and it was a duet.

For the longest time, I was going to call someone in to sing it. I just sing the whole thing. With the High Rhythm section, that’s who was with me in Memphis where we recorded everything live, I told them to rock it.

I didn’t want to make it too hippie. We did that from the beginning to end.

We did not stop. I was really pleased with the horns on it.

“I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)” We called in Lester Snell to do strings. He did Shaft and all of Isaac

“Wait a Minute” With this song, even the Stax people were like, “What song is this?”

Barbara Stephens is the one who did it. It wasn’t even a hit. I loved that early rock ’n’ roll beat to it. The way she sings is just ridiculous. I just had to throw it in.

“Born Under a Bad Sign” Unfortunately and too bad for me, I connect with the song’s theme. It’s become a blues and rock song, and I just wanted to stand up and say, “This is where it came from,” with this version of it.

“Dreams to Remember” That’s Otis Redding again. His talent stems from how he goes in and brings gospel to rock ’n’ roll and thus creating soul. It’s just ridiculous.

He’s so great at it.

MUSIC JAM ON Greensky Bluegrass takes some time in the studio to stretch their legs

By Eric Sandy THE DIVIDE BETWEEN STAGE and studio is always a fascinating line to cross for those bands who regularly dabble in live improvisation — “jam bands,” you could say — and each new record is a chance to blur the line just that much more. With the latest chapter in the story of Greensky Bluegrass, that’s the finished product that listeners have been digesting for the past few months.

The band — Dave Bruzza (guitar), Anders Beck (dobro), Mike Bont (banjo), Paul Hoffman (mandolin) and Mike Devol (upright bass) — has maintained a busy routine for more than 15 years now, and it’s netted them a bigger and more fervent fan base in the revitalized American bluegrass scene. “Newgrass,” you could call it. Or “just good music.” Their discography is formidable, with live albums and studio stuff marking each step in their progress.

Beck jumped on the phone with Scene recently, ahead of the band’s Jan. 11 return to Cleveland and during a time of great activity.

Greensky had just returned from Strings and Sol in Mexico, and they were looking toward their New Year’s run in their home state of Michigan.

The band released its latest album, Shouted, Written Down & Quoted, on Sept. 23, adding a notch to an impressive lineup of albums nestled in what could be called “Greensky 2.0” — the era following a handful of live albums and an era that has heralded bigger stages, bigger typefaces on festival bills.

It’s a worthy album among that set.

Here, the musicians seem to stretch their in-studio muscles in much the same way as they do onstage.

Beck shines; his dobro lead work is more electric, literally and figuratively. His solos are patient and engaging. Take “Living Over,” arguably the musical centerpiece of the album. There’s a distortion to the instrumentation that hasn’t

always been a hallmark of the band’s studio time.

“It’s something that we’ve taken from our live show,” Beck says. “I’ve started doing that kind of stuff in the live setting over the last couple years — whether there’s an amp onstage that’s essentially set to 11 that I can mix in with my clean dobro tone to create that big sound.”

Arena rock it’s not, but the dobro solo (and Paul Hoffman’s spacey mandolin solo) represent an ambitious leap forward for a band that’s already been spending years developing its approach to live, unconscious jamming.

“I think they’re the truest form of what Greensky does live that we’ve ever captured on a studio album,” Beck says, discussing “Living Over” and “Past My Prime,” which also features extended

the same book. It’s the next chapter of our music, but also of our lives.”

Beck says that an important part of each trip into the studio is expanding the band’s sound and doing things differently. That may seem at face value like a simple statement, but it cuts much deeper, especially against the backdrop of a Western market turning away from the concept of the album as art form.

“We learn how to try new things and create new songs,” Beck says.

“There’s a certain evolution that occurs that I don’t necessarily think we’re trying to achieve, but it’s just that we’re growing up.”

instrumentation beyond the central song structure. “We captured something special, and that’s really exciting for us.”

He added that there aren’t so much concrete goals when the band hits the studio, but rather a conscious desire to do things differently, to leave a unique mark on their time together.

“We get excited about sort of making the next chapter of Greensky Bluegrass,” Beck says.

they manifest themselves. This is what has made their songwriting and improvisation so enticing for anyone passing by their stage at a mid-summer festival. In watching Greensky for years now, it’s quite clear that they’ve been working to push the boundaries of bluegrass and explore something altogether more psychedelic and idiosyncratic.

Sure enough, there will be more music to come. For now, Shouted, Written Down & Quoted represents the fresh pastures that older

albums once represented — which albums have now gone on to evolve in their meanings for the musicians and fans alike.

“I’m a fan of the band as well, you know,” Beck says with a laugh.

“It’s strange to say that, but it’s true. You hear these — and I guess we’re playing them — but you hear these old songs and, for me, they are kind of a footprint in time and they mean something from a moment when they first came to life. What I’ve found playing those songs now, five or eight years later or whatever, they mean different things to me. And I suspect they mean different things to everybody.

To me, that’s the sign of a really good song.”

Looking ahead, as we’re all wont to do at this time of year, Beck sees another high-energy spin for Greensky Bluegrass. The January show is one thing for us in Cleveland; elsewhere, expect to see Greensky touring like crazy. (We spoke with Beck on the same day as the announcement of Dark Star Jubilee’s annual late-May festival in central Ohio. He points out how these announcements come earlier and earlier each year.)

“Everything’s growing,” Beck says of the band’s road time and studio work. “That’s the goal and the plan. If we can focus on that, then everything else positive shall hopefully come our way.”

High Class Criminals/Theta Waves/Attaboy/The Ballroom Charades: For North Ridgeville’s High Class Criminals, winning a battle of the bands like the local High School Rock Off could never compare to what they’ve accomplished of their own accord since their two years in the competition. OHIOANS ONLY Athens-based collective prepares new compilation of indie acts

By Jeff Niesel A WEBSITE AND MUSIC COLLECTIVE that formed in 2004 in Athens, Aquabear Legion has put out a number of compilations over its decadelong existence.

Dubbed Volume 5, last year’s release included acts from Cleveland, Columbus, Athens, Cincinnati, Dayton and Yellow Springs.

Now, the Aquabear folks have just announced they’ll release Volume 6, which will be another double LP featuring at least 20 Ohio bands.

“It’s going to be an incredible record, a collection of over 20 songs from over 20 of Ohio’s best bands on 2 LPs printed, pressed and designed in Ohio,” reads the press release.

Over the past decade, Aquabear Legion has collaborated with over 200 of Ohio’s best musicians and produced 11 releases during that time.

Bands slated to be on Volume 6 include Bridesmaid, Day Creeper, Extra Medium Pony, Andy Gabbard, Brian Harnetty, SW Hedrick, Hex Net, Caitlin Kraus, Leggy, Mary Lynn, Natural Sway, Palestras, Adam Remnant, R. Ring, the Safeties, Smug Brothers, Swarming Branch, Talons’, Village Bicycle and Water Witches.

ALTERNATIVE MUSIC AWARDS RETURNING TO CLEVELAND After two consecutive years in Cleveland, Alternative Press Music Awards moved to Columbus in 2016 to avoid a scheduling conflict with the Republic National Convention.

Now, the locally based music magazine has announced the awards will return to Cleveland in 2017.

The event will take place on July 17.

“We’ve got some big things planned

for the APMAs in 2017, and we’re so happy that we get to return to our hometown to make it all happen,” says Alternative Press founder and CEO Mike Shea in a press release. “The city of Cleveland is one of the hottest revitalized cities in the nation, and we are proud of our ongoing contribution to the city’s growth.”

In 2016, some 6,000 fans attended the event which featured performances

by A Day to Remember, Good Charlotte, Yellowcard, Of Mice & Men, Papa Roach, Babymetal, Issues, the Maine, Mayday Parade and Beartooth.

Details regarding the venue, tickets and VIP packages, hosts, nominees, honorees, attending/performing artists, red carpet appearances and related events will be announced in the new year at altpress.com/apmas.

ALL THAT JAZZ An icon in the jazz world, trumpet player Terence Blanchard recently announced that he will record his new album, Caravan, in cities “scarred by the escalation of tension between law enforcement and unarmed African Americans.”

Given Cleveland’s record of police shootings and racial tension, it only makes sense that Blanchard would include the city on his itinerary.

Blanchard and his backing band the E-Collective will come to the Bop Stop to record on at 8 p.m. on Jan. 4 and 5. The sessions will be open to the public, and tickets are $20.

DANIEL & THE BEST DRESSED

By Jeff Niesel MEET THE BAND: Daniel Rylander (vocals, guitar), Brian Fackelman (bass), Nathan Allison (drums) A SELF-TAUGHT MUSICIAN: A drummer for 17 years, local singer-songwriter Daniel Rylander taught himself to play piano and guitar. He can also handle a ukulele. Back in 2012, he co-wrote “A Friend & Brother (Be Thou at Peace)” with his uncle for his brother’s funeral. “We performed that song and people enjoyed it, and I recorded it and then made a record,” he says. He’s been writing songs ever since. In 2013, he issued his fulllength debut, Strawberry Skyline, and he followed it in 2015 with The Memoirs of a Poolside Romance. “It’s nice to have such a big catalog at this point,” he says.

STARTED AS A JOKE: Late last year, Rylander issued “White Elephant,” a tune inspired by a white elephant party. “It started out as a gag or joke,” he says. “I got this candy dish at the party. It was god-awful. I was the first to pick, so nobody would take it from me. A friend of mine told me to write something silly about it. ‘White Elephant’ started as a silly song but ended up having more meaning. It was just one of those songs that came to me in the course of 24 hours as

opposed to a couple of years.”

WHY YOU SHOULD HEAR HIM: Songs such as the somber “For a Moment” have an emo feel to them — think Death Cab for Cutie. His latest single, “Understanding,” originally appeared on The Memoirs of a Poolside Romance. Rylander decided to turn it into “a much more amped-up rocking tune. We’re using it as a model for the sound we’re going for in the new year,” he says. “It’s a song that means more to me now that I’ve tweaked it in the studio. It started to take the shape of something more, about not letting bad things define who we are.

It’s a really important song to me and it’s important given all the changes happening in the world right now. It’s ultimately about how I want to treat others as I would like to be treated.”
