PROTESTS CONFRONT EUCLID POLICE DEPARTMENT, CITY LEADERS

THIS WEEK

LAST WEEK, FIVE MONTHS after the shooting death of Luke Stewart, the Euclid Police Department placed officer Matthew Rhodes on “desk duty” — pulling him from active street duty.

Scene was told that this was a distinct possibility after a particularly eventful rally was held at the Euclid Municipal Building on Aug. 21, when protesters from Black Lives Matter Cleveland joined the Stewart family in pleading with mayor Kirsten Gail and police chief Scott Meyer for answers.

Gail offered a solemn response and said that the state’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation has completed its review of the Stewart case; it’s out of the city’s hands at this point. The case will be sent to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s office for an impending grand jury hearing.

move in a news story that also included — for the first time in local media — a brief, expository report from the video of the March 13 shooting. (“At one point, officers on scene could be heard suggesting they not use their radios,” according to the news station.)

The Stewart family was scheduled to meet with city leaders, including Meyer, on last Thursday. Scene learned that the meeting had been canceled; it’s unclear if or when the parties will meet in the future.

When we last spoke with the Stewart family, they were calling for a meeting within 48 hours of the Aug. 21 city council meeting. They have been waiting for that meeting since March.

The five-month gulf of silence has been an unavoidable theme in Euclid all year, where several longtime

residents have told Scene that administration after administration continues to take a wait-and-see approach to the city’s problems. As the Stewart family repeatedly asked for a sit-down with Gail and Meyer and other city leaders, the anger felt over the March 13 shooting festered.

All of that came to a head Aug. 12 when Richard Hubbard III was violently arrested by officer Michael Amiott. Video footage of the incident traveled virally around the internet for days, and the police department by then had no choice but to place Amiott on unpaid administrative leave. (Amiott has a history of alleged assaults on victims in his role as a police officer, in both April and July of this year.)

Members of Black Lives Matter and the Stewart family were canvassing a nearby shopping plaza on the day that

Hubbard was arrested, bringing the two law enforcement incidents in close proximity. One week later, the family joined in organizing a rally at the Euclid City Council meeting. Public comment was reserved for the end of the meeting, which basically involved a few hours of zoning policy talk.

Council chambers were packed, and the atmosphere was already very charged when Gail began the meeting by addressing the Stewart case directly, as well as the Hubbard arrest. Fists were raised silently in the audience as Gail explained that the state’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation had long ago taken the Stewart case out of the city’s hands.

“We do not have control over the investigation or process, and that is by design,” Gail said, reading a prepared statement. “We want answers as well.”

her comments, noting that Stewart’s death and Hubbard’s arrest had “understandably damaged” the police department’s relationships with Euclid’s black community.

After those brief statements, the council meeting began in earnest.

Public comment was to be relegated to the end of a lengthy agenda.

Somewhere during the second sleepy agenda item, Black Lives Matter organizer Rian Brown stood up in the front row and began chanting: “Fists up! Fight back!” She and others were quickly escorted out of the room by police, but nearly everyone else in chambers had begun chanting along with them in a stirring moment of voluminous support.

Very quickly, more than 100 men and women streamed out of council chambers and joined the growing crowd. Chants filled the room: “What side are you on, my people?” and “If Luke don’t get it, shut it down!” and “Vote them out!” The energy was extremely intense — the most fervent and visible display of protest in Northeast Ohio since either the Women’s March earlier this year or the outcry against the Michael Brelo acquittal in 2015, depending on how one measures these events.

At one point, everyone sat down as Brown and others led an almost Occupy-style meeting about the importance of having their voices heard by Euclid City Council.

Councilwoman Taneika Hill came into the lobby to hear out the claims and wishes of protesters. (The council meeting was still going on, and at least a few wary white residents were seen videotaping the rally from behind the windows of council chambers.)

“I want them to hear every person’s

pain, every person’s experience, every person’s situation,” Hill told the crowd, emphasizing how she wanted her colleagues on council to understand the intent of the rally.

The response from protesters was an oft-repeated question throughout the night: “Why is Matthew Rhodes still on the street?” No answer was provided, though city council president John Monroe did at one point sort of blame the police department’s collective bargaining agreement with the city. (Council does not make personnel decisions like the firing of a police officer. “At times we may want to say much more,” he said, but council’s voice is somewhat limited in these matters.)

Nonetheless, Hill listened to Stewart’s family members, but there was no real progress or dialogue.

Then the tactical officers showed up.

Threatening criminal trespassing charges and ordering the protesters out of the building, the SWAT crew stood at the ready. Damien Parker, a protester representing First Team International, immediately stood them down and urged them to “try to find a peaceful resolution.” Police chief Meyer and mayor Gail were called into the lobby to help defuse the situation, and the evening’s one dialogue unfolded quietly between Parker and the two city leaders (and, later, between Stewart’s cousin Jocelyn Smith and the chief and mayor).

“You gotta hold these officers accountable,” Parker told them, “or you’re going to see violence across the city of Euclid. That’s not a threat; I’m just telling you.” He added that the crowd gathered in Euclid that night was only a small fraction of the people

While Meyer and Gail didn’t say much in response, they remained in the crowd and listened to both Parker and Smith. Mayer reiterated that the Stewart investigation is out of their hands. The next step, he said, is for BCI to hand the case over to the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office, where all officer-involved shootings must be run through the grand jury process.

The conversation drew to a close, and Meyer ordered his tactical officers to depart. The protesters walked out of the building, chanting once again, “What side are you on, my people?

What side are you on?”

Scene asked Rian Brown of Black Lives Matter whether she thought there was any progress last night.

She didn’t, saying that “these are the same concerns we’ve brought up since March.” What was clear from her statements and from others is how divided the city of Euclid is right now.

Out in the parking lot, Jocelyn Smith thanked everyone for their support of her family. She said that

the city had informally agreed to meet within 48 hours to discuss Officer Rhodes’ future with the department.

And if that meeting does not happen, she and others insisted, the group will be back. The immediate goal: Force Meyer into acting on Rhodes.

“If he doesn’t utilize his power,” Smith said, “we’re damn sure gonna utilize ours.”

Within the week, Rhodes was pulled from active duty. The next move is unclear. — Eric Sandy

MAYORAL PRIMARY DEBATE CEDES FLOOR TO FRONTRUNNER FRANK JACKSON In the first official Cleveland mayoral debate, a 90-minute affair last Friday that became a war of sound bites, the three-term incumbent Frank Jackson got the last word.

“Anyone who wants to talk about the illusion of what should be, that’s a nice conversation,” said Jackson, in closing remarks. (He was the last of the nine candidates to speak.)

“But when it comes down to reality, I deal with it because I go to bed with it every night. Every night I go to bed with it, and that means I have to bring resolution in order to take care of who I love and who I care about, just like you do. And I cannot

live in that illusion. I have to live in a reality. And when you live in reality you have anxiety. And when you have anxiety, that means you have to own success. You have to own failure. You have to own it, and you cannot blame somebody else ... What have you done?

You ain’t raised nothin, and you ain’t done nothin.”

The crowd of civic leaders in attendance erupted in applause.

They’d been waiting for this moment, for a mic drop of sorts, and they got their pyrotechnic finale. No one knew exactly what Jackson meant.

What did “raise” denote, for instance?

Was he saying that his challengers hadn’t successfully raised a city out of calamity, as Jackson had raised Cleveland from the recession? Was he talking about raising a family?

Raising taxes?

He likely just meant that it’s easy to criticize the mayor when you’re not the mayor, and intended to swat away the (in many cases) minimal or barely applicable credentials of his challengers. But whatever he meant, his supporters were in jubilant hysterics, leaping out of their seats and obscuring the audio of the forum’s adjournment. City council president Kevin Kelley and Jackson’s lately retired chief of staff Ken Silliman, now a presumed campaign operative,

beamed broadly and met each other in a triumphant high-five. The Global Center for Health Innovation jangled with the wind-chime-ish trills that a whole lot of high-end cutlery and plateware make when they collide.

With nine candidates vying for votes and attention, no one stood much of a chance at Friday afternoon’s City Club event, smooth and neutral moderating of Cleveland public radio’s Rick Jackson notwithstanding.

Frank Jackson’s closing statement will likely be the afternoon’s runaway quote, although the notion of Jackson “embracing failure” and “not blaming somebody else” is a real knee-slapper.

But it’s true: In the 90 seconds allotted for intros and closings, and the 60 seconds allotted for individual answers, the policy “debate” was without a great deal of substance.

The candidates could do little but revert to their favored talking points and had no opportunity to engage in one-on-one tussles that characterized, for example, the Republican primary debates. (Even last week’s PD/ Cleveland.com endorsement interview featured a bit more direct engagement, if not more friction, than this City Club event.)

Jeff Johnson was uneven as well.

He had two very strong moments.

First, he reminded the crowd of the importance of public transit as an equity issue and called for state, federal and private investment; and secon, he returned to a question on coalition building, which heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d not been asked to answer directly, and announced that â&#x20AC;&#x153;all coalitions are not positive coalitions,â&#x20AC;? referencing the city hall coalition that had worked to â&#x20AC;&#x153;deny and suppress the voteâ&#x20AC;? on the Q Deal. Otherwise, he didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t break through. He was unable to

Johnson wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even able to respond to Fresh Brewed Teesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Tony Madalone â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the afternoonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ďŹ&#x201A;amethrower â&#x20AC;&#x201D; when Madalone accused Johnson of exploiting the vulnerability of the citizenry (an allusion to Johnsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s SEIU support?) and of using lead poisoning as a political talking point. Madalone accused all the elected leaders in attendance of ineffective leadership and in ďŹ nal remarks lumped the media in as well: The media that supports incumbents are accessories, he said, stunting the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s potential and progress.

If Madalone was after Johnson, Brandon Chrostowski was after Reed.

The Edwins founder mentioned again that he hoped to bring his job training model to the city of Cleveland â&#x20AC;&#x201D; he suggested that the city should build ďŹ ve job training centers â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and lashed out at Reed for not using his council seat to effect change on the public safety front. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Your campaign is safety ďŹ rst, but it should be excuses ďŹ rst,â&#x20AC;?

Chrostowski said.

Former East Cleveland mayor Eric Brewer was strong, as he can be in these settings. He read from prepared remarks and cited speciďŹ c examples of problems he saw and solutions heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d offer. Many of the candidates have said that they would ďŹ re safety director Michael McGrath and special assistant (former safety director) Martin Flask, but Brewer was the only candidate to say that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d â&#x20AC;&#x153;make a changeâ&#x20AC;? at the CEO-level of the Cleveland schools. He also proposed, once again, the idea of a city hospital and of having physicians as part of EMS squads. He billed himself as the answer to Clevelandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x153;out of controlâ&#x20AC;? management and said he wanted to continue the legacy of Carl Stokes.

His debate persona was in marked contrast to his vindictive social media presence.

Dyrone Smith continued his crusade against unions and opened with a weird incantation that youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be forgiven for assuming came from the Faceless Men of Braavos. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What you should know about me is that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m nobody. Meantime, the number of doors that Robert Kilo has personally knocked on continues to rise. Today, the former director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes said that he had knocked on nearly 15,000, and that hasn’t precluded him from continuing to sharply criticize current leadership. His two priorities are safety and education, and he successfully communicated them, citing a “10-point Coalition” for violence reduction that he’d cribbed from Indianapolis with the mayor’s blessing. Still, he remains out of the fold of the primary contenders. The Republican-endorsed candidate isn’t viewed, evidently, as much of a threat.

The City Club itself, and moderator Rick Jackson, put on an impressive show for the sold-out crowd. The candidates, to their credit, rarely rambled or went above their allotted answer time. Some of them are clearly taking to heart what Cleveland. com editor Chris Quinn suggested recently: that in what is increasingly understood as a race for second place, the contenders are going to have to stop aiming their weapons at Frank

Jackson and start aiming them at one another.

Quinn and the PD/Cleveland.com editorial board, for their part, endorsed Frank Jackson this weekend, as was expected. In a lengthy editorial, they admitted that Jackson probably shouldn’t be seeking a fourth four-year term — “the best and brightest of his administration may soon move on, leaving behind Jackson’s second-raters, the ones he’s irrationally protected all these years,” — but that the field of challengers simply couldn’t match his experience. Quinn has noted before that Jackson is running on his track record, not on what he hopes to accomplish. In fact, Jackson has presented no plans at all for what he intends to do in his final term. When Jackson mocked his challengers Friday by asking what they had accomplished — “What have you done?” — their retort should have been: “What will you do?”

with regional leaders — the Cleveland Cavaliers touted its merits, casting blame upon local organizations and disdaining Clevelanders who dared intervene.

The deal would have “significantly upgraded one of the oldest arenas in the NBA,” a press release lamented.

It would have made the Q “more competitive for the long term.” It would have “created over 2,500 projectrelated construction jobs, grown The Q’s permanent job base to 3,200, increased tax revenue to the City’s General Fund and neighborhoods, extended the Cavaliers lease for The Q to 2034, rehabbed 40 gym courts and floors in the city of Cleveland’s rec centers and all Cleveland Metropolitan School Districts high schools.” And of course, it would have “brought an NBA All-Star Game to Cleveland in 2020 or 2021 along with its $100 million+ economic impact.”

These bullet points were breathlessly anthologized in the angry release whose central purpose was blaming a voter-led referendum effort on the deal’s collapse.

The project’s architects had hoped that construction would begin in June, but the project was delayed, per the release, “due to a prospective referendum being placed on the ballot by the Washington, DC-based

Metro Industrial Areas Foundation represented locally by a group calling themselves the “Greater Cleveland Congregations” (GCC), Service Employees International Union District 1199 and the Cuyahoga County Progressive Caucus.”

The release went on to celebrate the economic benefits of the Q and thank the civic leaders for supporting the deal.

“Civic and community support for the project was earned by the publicfriendly, private and self-generating funding source structure being an efficient, significantly less costly and beneficial way to extend the life of a core public asset for the long term,” the release said. “The Cavaliers organization will no longer participate in the partnership formed for The Q Transformation project and the need for a referendum no longer exists.”

Armond Budish released a statement as well mourning the deal’s demise and denigrating opponents.

“Contrary to misinformation put out by the opposition,” Budish claimed, citing nothing, “the death of this deal actually means there will be less money, not more, available for social and community services. By killing this deal, the opponents have harmed the future for our neighborhood residents.” — Allard

UPFRONT CLEVELAND RESIDENTS TAKE ACTION ON AT&T REDLINING As promised, Florida-based attorney Daryl Parks has filed a lawsuit against AT&T over its history of rolling out infrastructure upgrades on an unequal basis across neighborhoods in Cleveland. Wealthier neighborhoods have seen their AT&T internet access and speeds improve, poorer neighborhoods have not (or have seen only incremental and relatively more minor improvements).

The complaint was filed with the FCC, alleging that AT&T violated an anti-discrimination clause in the commission’s Title II consumer protections. Joanne Elkins, Hattie Lanfair, and Rachelle Lee, three black Cleveland residents, are the named complainants.

While this case will unfold in the FCC, the proceedings will still work much like a federal court. The complainants’ goal, ultimately, is an injunction against AT&T that would prohibit this sort of “redlining” in metropolitan areas. This sort of internet disparity is seen in other

cities, too, including Toledo, Dayton, Louisville, Detroit and Milwaukee.— Sandy

CUYAHOGA COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY ELECTS FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN WOMAN AS CHAIR In a vote at Euclid High School Saturday, the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party elected county councilwoman Shontel Brown as their new chair. Brown defeated Newburgh Heights mayor Trevor Elkins and state senator Sandra Williams.

Brown had been endorsed by key Democratic elected officials in the region, including congresswoman Marcia Fudge and county executive Armond Budish, not to mention Cleveland city council president Kevin Kelley and almost every other member of council. But Brown was explicitly not endorsed by outgoing party chair Stu Garson.

Garson sent a strongly worded letter to members of the party’s central committee last week endorsing either Elkins or Williams, advising that fundraising — the organization’s chief function — would be impossible if donors don’t trust the integrity of the chair.

“Future chairs need to understand,” Garson wrote, “that successful fundraising is about their character and ability to convey that the Party is governed by its principles and our community’s public interest.”

The letter was in response to circulating rumors within the party that suggested Shontel Brown might (wittingly or not) be an instrument of powerful factions within the party. Those factions had reportedly sought a chair that would do their bidding. At a forum last Tuesday, Brown addressed the rumors, insisting that she was confident in her abilities and was “not a puppet.”

Her competitors and other observers weren’t convinced.

Nor, evidently, was Garson. By endorsing two of the three candidates, he was effectively saying, “Anyone but Shontel Brown.” It was a striking rebuke to the roster of powerful regional leaders who lined up to endorse her.

In his letter, Garson said that he’d worked for years to elevate “process over personality” in the organization, particularly as it related to candidate endorsements. He said that the future of the party depended on continuing this tradition.

“Any prospective Chair who

attempts to pick between candidates before endorsement or engineer a predetermined result will be moving the party back to a dysfunctional past instead of building on the fragile progress we have achieved up to this point,” he wrote.

His words were weighted with experience: Garson has been party chair for the past seven years and has worked to rehabilitate the party’s image in the wake of the Jimmy Dimora years. That work has been difficult. He said it wasn’t unusual for him to spend 25 to 30 hours per week in his role, on top of his full-time job as a lawyer.

Garson’s stated reason for stepping down early — his term doesn’t officially end until next June — was so that the party wouldn’t be bogged down by internal feuds during next summer’s campaign season. This is crucial, as both Elkins and Williams alluded to Tuesday, because having a leader who can secure even a handful of extra Democratic votes in precincts across the county could move the needle on statewide elections. Brown’s work is cut out for her.

STOCK UP What to buy (and what not to buy) for your life in a dorm room

By Kirby Davis COLLEGE ISN’T JUST EXPENSIVE because of tuition, room and board.

Sustaining yourself at school comes with a host of other potential costs, and here’s what’s generally worth splurging on versus what’s not.

WORTH IT: A printer. While it’s pricier upfront to buy your own, rather than use one at the library or student center (or mooch off a friend), it’ll be worth it. You won’t have to worry if the school’s printers are malfunctioning or all in use, and you won’t have to scramble between classes to print off papers.

A coffeemaker. You have no idea what your sleep schedule will be like once you’re at school. Despite your best intentions, you’ll probably find

yourself desperate for caffeine at an ungodly hour in which every coffee dispensary on campus is closed. No bueno.

A winter coat. It’s not high school. Flimsy fleece North Face jackets may have protected you during your walk from the senior parking lot into school, but they have nothing on a 20-minute trek to class during an Ohio blizzard.

No one cares if you look like a yeti walking around campus; they do, too, and all they’re thinking about is how cold they are.

Over-the-counter medicine. If you have a debilitating cold at school, your mom can’t call you in sick. Stock up on DayQuil, NyQuil, Advil and allergy medicine (or whatever works for you) to ensure

that you’ll remain a functioning human being even when illness strikes. The flu doesn’t care if it’s finals week.

A water bottle. Would you rather spend some money on a decent reusable water bottle once or have to stock up on plastic ones every month? Plus, if you don’t invest in one, you’ll feel guilty every time you pass your campus’ ubiquitous hydration stations.

A fancy planner. While $20plus might seem like a lot to throw at a glorified notebook, it can be an invaluable organizational tool.

You’ll likely be more inclined to use it, too, if it cost more money.

NOT WORTH IT: Designer shower shoes. You’ll

want to burn them at the end of the year anyway, so why not just buy some cheap flip-flops?

Too much storage. Extra storage is requisite for living comfortably in a college dorm room. But you can have too much; wait until you get to school to evaluate how much you’ll actually need, and how much space you have to fill.

Fancy bedding. You likely won’t have another Twin XL bed again, as they’re uniquely and unfortunately exclusive to college dorm rooms. What are you going to do with those coffee-stained $300 designer sheets post-graduation?

By Julie Ciotola STUDYING ABROAD IN COLLEGE is perhaps the only time you can pack up and move across the ocean for a few months without any backlash. It is a great opportunity to try new food, drink (legally) and immerse yourself in a new culture. Oh, and take classes.

Such a dramatic change comes with its challenges, though these usually pop up within the first few weeks as you find your footing. Still, it never hurts to prepare and tackle problems the moment they arise.

Here are a few issues you may encounter as you head overseas.

TRAVEL Depending on where you stay, it is likely your new city will have surrounding areas worth exploring.

Be prepared when traveling in a different country. Subway systems vary, taxi drivers may not speak English and you could end up making one too many wrong turns on foot.

Never explore alone, plan out each venture and take plenty of water and money. Getting lost can lead you to new and exciting sights, but finding your way home is always most important.

SPENDING MONEY Even if the currency looks different, the money is still very real. Between flight costs, tuition, food, souvenirs, more souvenirs — bills add up quickly.

Be careful you don’t slip into a vacation mindset for three months and buy everything in sight.

FOOD After a few weeks of tasting new dishes, your stomach might ache for your mom’s cooking, or perhaps a juicy McDonald’s burger. Be prepared to crave food from home. Ask around about ‘American’-style restaurants, or brave the hunger pains. By the time you return home, the food will taste a million times better.

Despite the inevitable risks of leaving your home country, the benefits of studying abroad are endless. Stepping outside your comfort zone is a healthy way to grow as a scholar and individual. If you have the chance to take courses abroad, seriously consider. Prepare for problems, but also prepare for an experience that will shape you, and send you back to home base with a renewed perspective.

HOMESICKNESS Being a three-hour bus ride away from home is much different than a 12 hour flight. Within the first few weeks of your new adventure, you may feel homesickness creeping up on you.

Totally normal. Unfortunately, unless you want to drop all your classes and head home, there is no simple fix.

Make sure you have a reliable phone plan to stay in touch with family and exchange pictures. Before you go, pack a few items with sentimental value for comfort purposes. Stay focused on your class work and exploring the new culture, and time will fly.

CHEAP BEER, LITTLE SLEEP, DINING HALL FOOD, TIGHT BUDGET. The college lifestyle sounds like a recipe for weight gain, and many freshmen fall victim to this trap. You come home for winter break, exhausted from copious amounts of studying (or drinking), with a noticeable change in physique. Without the discipline of high school sports, or the home-cooked meals and evening walks with your mom, habits change. Whether this means gaining fat or losing muscle, it takes a toll on your well-being.

“Fit” is a term associated with bodybuilders and marathon runners, the type of people you assume dedicate their entire day to weights and stair steppers. It is true, such people exist, and such people are fit. But being fit in college does not mean you need to cut social activities and library time to spend hours at the rec center.

In fact, you may find you aren’t making sacrifices whatsoever, once you realize the benefits reaped from staying active on campus.

By making an effort to stay healthy, you will find academics much easier. Exercising helps relieve anxiety and promote focus, and gives you a chance to recharge.

Here’s some tips to get you started.

FIND YOUR FIT Maybe you played sports in high school and know which workouts suit you, or maybe not. Either way, the key to sticking to a fitness program is finding workouts you enjoy. Take a few fitness classes, find a nearby running trail, ask some friends to meet at the basketball court. Explore your options until you find a workout that feels best. This makes fitness less of a chore and more of a hobby.

PICK A WORKOUT BUDDY On days when you dread getting out of bed, a workout partner will help. Together, you can push through bad days and hard workouts. Plus, this may encourage a sense of friendly competition to help you reach new levels of strength.

MAKE A SCHEDULE AND STICK TO IT Rather than telling yourself, “I’ll probably go for a run before math class,” write it down. Start each week by planning when you’ll work out, so you don’t lose track of time and miss an opportunity.

Morning workouts are always beneficial, boosting energy levels and metabolism for the day, but plan according to your schedule.

SLEEP Obviously college will greet you with some sleepless nights, whether they are spent in the library or hurling outside a bar. But in general, sleep should be a main priority. There is no way you will make it to a 7 a.m. kickboxing class if you’re watching Game of Thrones until 3 a.m. Be smart about sleep. Give your body the rest it craves.

DIET Having energy to work out will depend on the fuel you feed your body, so make smart choices. If pizza is lunch, salad and chicken can be dinner. Always wake up with the intention of having breakfast.

And if you fall off track for a week with your meals, don’t dwell.

Always focus forward with the intention to eat right and exercise as much as possible. It is a long, imperfect process, but worth every failure.

INTERNSHIPS ARE AN INVALUABLE part of the career preparation process and in terms of landing your first real job, the one that starts your career. Without interning at a company or publication like this one, it becomes all the more difficult to get real work experience in your field under your belt before graduating college.

You might even learn more at your internship than you do in some of your classes.

Internships also allow you to test drive a career, so to speak. So they deserve to be taken seriously.

Taking on an internship out of state is exciting and challenging.

Depending on the city you're coming from, there may be more opportunities in a new state.

If you are considering an outof-state internship, it helps if you know someone in that state who will let you stay with them while you're interning. If you are interning out of state it's probably best to do so over the summer when your class load is light and your schedule allows for more free time. You're going to want to put in hours at your internship while becoming acquainted with your new city and possibly also working a part-time job.

I moved to Cleveland from Little Rock, Arkansas, which has a metro population of 724,385 versus Cleveland's 2 million. It's a pretty big change, and there's a lot to cover for the local alt-weekly. Because of Cleveland's size and location, Scene covers news and writes stories spanning the entire Northeast Ohio region.

It’s great to have a variety of story options to write about, expanding my portfolio while also giving me a byline to show future employers. Scene is constantly

working on multiple stories, ranging from labor-intensive slideshows detailing the best spots in the city for things to do, to longform, in-depth features that expose Cleveland’s faults or problems in a fair and critical manner. There is plenty going on in the city to write about; it’s just a matter of making the most out of the internship.

By now everyone who lives in Cleveland knows the city is going through a “renaissance.” As someone who had never considered moving to Cleveland — or even interning here — I was constantly impressed by the city all summer.

Not that this city needs the validation of a 24-year-old from Arkansas, but Cleveland feels like a legitimate city, not just sprawl.

I lived right off Coventry and frequented the Grog Shop for shows that I could conveniently walk to. That is just one of many neighborhoods worth exploring.

While Cleveland is spread out —and god knows why it’s divided into so many “cities” (c’mon, Lakewood and Cleveland Heights are just Cleveland) — I liked the many neighborhoods that make Cleveland so unique. Each one felt distinct, almost like a smaller borough.

And the weather this summer was almost always perfect, compared to the humid South I’m used to.

I’m thankful for my internship at Scene and not because they asked me to write this, but because it provided some real insight into my field while providing constructive feedback on ways to improve my craft, all while allowing me to get to know a gem of a city.

THE QUESTION OF WHETHER OR not to attend and pay for college these days is rivaled only by the almost absurd question of whether or not to attend and pay for journalism school.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a particularly peculiar higher-ed niche, one affected broadly and deeply by the tightening grip of the internet.

Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s examine it, anyway.

Believe it or not, readers, senior writer Sam Allard and I both hold journalism degrees from Northwestern University and Ohio University, respectively. We worked at college publications and elsewhere before landing at Scene in the winter of 2012-2013, when we dove swan-like into the world of longform magazine feature writing and extremely savvy jokes about the mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mismatched socks.

At j-school, we learned, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an empirical beneďŹ t to working through the mechanics of good writing and interviewing technique, day in and day out, for four or ďŹ ve years under the watchful eye of journalism professors (who, if theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re worth their salt, spent years as reporters and editors before seeking cushioned tenure or who, if theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not, can be seen through like freshly washed windows in a downtown law ofďŹ ce).

But know that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a rigidity to the classwork that sometimes feels like walking on a treadmill set perpetually at 2.6 mph. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not, shall we say, â&#x20AC;&#x153;the real world,â&#x20AC;? and no college program ever will be.

Legendary writer Michael Roberts once wrote: â&#x20AC;&#x153;J-school ate my brain.â&#x20AC;?

And that was 24 years ago!

Even if youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re attending a state school, the likely outcome is a good decade of student debt. And, no secret here: Journalism pays a garbage salary. (Most journalism schools these days include a public relations or marketing circuit, which will lead to more ďŹ nancially lucrative careers.

We will ignore that troubling fact for now.) The ďŹ nancial cost-beneďŹ t analysis is pretty clear and pretty pessimistic, which means what it has always meant: This is a calling, not a job.

As a journalist, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll not only need to know that a tool kit exists for your work, but also how to use those tools.

English classes will take you far, but it will be the nuts and bolts of conveying information in a quick, relevant and enticing way that will propel you into your career. To that end, yes, j-school is a useful playground (if only because the life of a journalist is conducive to self-ďŹ&#x201A;agellation and an unbound thirst for Mega Mugs at Red Brick Tavern on a Wednesday afternoon).

Every journalist will make many mistakes. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best to knock out as many as you can while working at a student paper or an off-campus magazine, rather than on the gradually expanding platforms your career will ďŹ nd you.

But â&#x20AC;&#x201D; and now we arrive at the bottom line â&#x20AC;&#x201D; journalism remains a unique sort of business where your experience matters more than your pedigree. If you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ask direct, confrontational questions of someone in power, then your bachelor of arts wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t do you any good. But that skill â&#x20AC;&#x201D; approaching strangers with the sole intent of drawing information from them â&#x20AC;&#x201D; is something that a good j-school will massage if you need the preseason workout. Unless youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re naturally inclined as a high school student to hang around the county justice center or inquire tirelessly about the nature of class and neighborhood development, then you might want to consider the classroom for a few years. Read the book!

VIKING HUNT The search for Ronald Berkman’s heir at CSU

By Sam Allard AS CLEVELAND STATE UNIVERSITY welcomes its largest-ever freshman class, it is also preparing for the departure of president Ronald Berkman.

Earlier this year, Berkman announced that he’d be retiring at the end of June 2018, marking the end of a nine-year tenure during which Cleveland’s city university witnessed enormous physical and capital growth.

“It has been a period of tremendous momentum,” CSU marketing director Rob Spademan told Scene. “As we search for a new president, we’re looking for someone to continue that record of success: someone who will connect our students with career opportunities at the corporations, institutions and non-profits in the area; someone who will bring innovative thinking and ideas that turn into real programs; and someone who can react and respond to the changes and disruptions in higher education models.”

Spademan said that right now, the Alabama-based search firm Wheless Partners is gathering information. Through public forums, one-on-one interviews, and conversations with faculty, staff and students, the search firm will craft an official “job description” based on the community’s priorities.

In mid-September, Wheless will present the 22-member presidential search committee — led by CSU’s board chair Bernie Moreno — with their fi ndings. Interviews will take place through the fall and winter.

“We’re hoping to announce

the next president of Cleveland State University in early 2018,” Spademan said.

Spademan said he is expecting an impressive slate of applicants that may include university presidents, CEOs, and politicians.

“The university’s in a great place,” Spademan said. “This is going to be a great job for somebody. It’s not a situation where a leader has to come in and stop the bleeding. We’re well-positioned in the community and we have a treasure trove of relationships, many of them created by President Berkman.”

Spademan cited, as just one example, the 12 members of the Cleveland Orchestra who teach and tutor students in CSU’s music program. “They’re not going to drive four hours to Athens to give a one-hour trumpet lesson and then drive back to Cleveland,” he said. “We have tremendous benefits because of our location.”

CSU’s next president ought to be as excited by the city’s resurgence as the students are, Spademan said, mentioning that the university has seen an influx of freshman who decided to attend CSU because of the Cavs or other amenities downtown, “in the same way that kids go to Ohio State because of the football team.”

Spademan said both the city and the university are “on a roll,” and he’s confident that the firm and the committee will fi nd an energetic leader to take the reins.

Cleveland Bazaar Having hosted markets and events across the region for more than a decade, the Cleveland Bazaar, formerly known as the Bazaar Bizarre Cleveland, is the longestrunning indie craft show in Northeast Ohio. ART FISTS UP Shaker Community Garden opens The Art of Dissent

By Dott von Schneider DISSENT IS AS OLD AS HUMAN society. One can argue that Jesus Christ was a dissident intellectual who condemned the abuse of moral values, those values being equality and love for one’s neighbor. Dissent is what keeps us from becoming robots. It’s speaking out to your coworker about his or her racist political rants. It’s voicing your disagreement with the slack-jawed dude at the bar, despite a possible beat down.

The Episcopal Church broke away from the Church of England in dissent against the monarchy, and Episcopalians have been supporting civil rights, gay marriage and full legal equality for all people for a long time. That the Shaker Community Gallery and its latest exhibition, The Art of Dissent, are housed inside Christ Episcopalian Church seems fitting. This second show at the SCG has four artists’ work on exhibit in the small rectory: Michelangelo Lovelace, Liz Maugans and Laura and Gary Dumm.

Walking into the rectory, we are faced with a piece titled “The Deportation Wall,” by Lovelace. He is known for paintings based on the struggles of poverty and urban life and for balancing love and community through his own experiences. Here, and in many pieces, he has us questioning our American values.

In this powerful painting of hard bricks and human eyes, we reflect on those values of freedom and justice for all, not just a few. Lovelace created this artwork in response to the president’s announcement about building the 30-foot border wall. Walls equal division, not protection, and here we are not only being observed by immigrant eyes, we are being observed by the world and peering back at ourselves.

In his smaller paintings, Lovelace takes us into the streets of the city, on a journey of realities. In the lower left painting we find ourselves standing at the intersection of Joy and Pain. On one street we can walk through the bright doorway into the community development center, or we can enter the gruesome abyss of the unemployment office. Both venues are

packed. In the lower right painting we can cross the street into God’s House or into the bar; the choice is ours to make. What will the moral of your story be?

Maugans created her Apathy Parade series when the 2016 presidential campaign was in full swing. In these prints, Maugans has removed the original banner messages and replaced them with rants and debates pulled from social media.

One very effective piece describes the complacency of the status quo. “It’s a disease. Nobody thinks or feels or

better equips us to be agents for social change. To that end, Maugans has created small prints where visitors can write their own slogans on banners held up by two personages and post them in the gallery.

Laura and Gary Dumm have created three large-scale paintings in their environmental pop-surrealist series. Using iconic movie monsters, the Dumms have presented a poignant opinion on pollution, climate change and engineering. Maria, the android from Metropolis, poses as the god Shiva. With her ominous

cares anymore; nobody gets excited or believes in anything except their own comfortable little God damn mediocrity.” Maugans is one of Cleveland’s strongest arts advocates as well as a civic and political lobbyist.

stare piercing right through us, she grips a commentary on pop culture in each of her manmade hands, from Marilyn Monroe and fast food to reality television and industry.

Moving to the center painting, we find Audrey Jr., the plant from Little Shop

of Horrors, as Monsanto, killing off bees and trapping them in its gaping maw. The final painting depicts the great Gorgon, Medusa. Behind her we find an octopus bearing down on the Beatles’ yellow submarine while Nemo watches helplessly as the disembodied head turns the bright coral reefs to stone.

The last piece to enter the show is a pen and ink drawing by Gary Dumm.

The drawing, titled “The Invisible Man Returns to Fascism,” is a direct response to the horrific events in Charlottesville. Here the Invisible Man floats between Interstate 14 and Rt. 88, above the Capital building, shrouded in a burning American flag; the stars form a clansman’s hood as he holds a gun in one hand and a bible in the other. A noose hangs like a pendant from his neck. Above this figure we find the epic words, “We the People…” and “Article 1” belched away in a puff of smoke, much like the separation of powers in our government.

STAGE PEOPLE TURNING INTO RHINOCEROSES? The Trump era has transformed theatrical absurdity into near-reality BACK IN 1959, WHEN EUGENE Ionesco wrote his comic-absurdist play Rhinoceros, the idea of people exchanging their human skins for the rough hide of animals and turning into actual stampeding and ravenous rhinoceroses was a real hoot. But these days, too many politicians and other citizens are pulling on the skin of white supremacists, neo-Nazis and alt-Reich acolytes to see if it fits.

And suddenly, it’s not so funny anymore.

The subversive power of theater is that it can make us laugh in the face of real existential threats.

And that laughter, with any luck, can turn into change. So it is worth paying attention to this convergence-continuum production of the often wordy Rhinoceros.

Moving among various cosmopolitan settings, from a cafe to an office, and then to the bedroom of a lead character, we see ordinary citizens startled as one rhinoceros, then more, begin charging down the streets and brushing against store windows.

Where did they come from? Who knows, but as humans usually do, they fixate on small details instead of the overall import.

As a result, long discussions are launched about whether the invading rhinoceroses have one horn or two, and if they’re Asian or African. Meanwhile, people start disappearing because, it seems, they are turning into rhinoceroses themselves, giving up their humanity for herd mentality. Eventually, protagonist and Everyman archetype Berenger is left alone to contemplate what has become of the civilized society of which he was once a barely functioning part.

A capsule description of Ionesco’s themes can sometimes not do justice to his writing, since it all begins rather subtly. The elegant and refined Jean is meeting his scruffy friend Berenger for a sip of something, and Jean is busy noting his pal’s shortcomings when their conversation is interrupted, momentarily, by the aforementioned quadruped.

In order to achieve this effect in con-con’s tiny playing space, director Jonathan Wilhelm’s set design has carved out a narrow track semi-circling the audience where actors, playing rhinoceroses, can stomp and snort accompanied by thundering sound effects designed by Beau Reinker. When on stage, the actors are surrounded by all-white set pieces and props,

featured video elements that were often gratuitous. Anyhow, we all have a pretty good idea what rhinos look like, rough and ugly, and they serve as a stark symbol of what these humans are becoming.

Although the play seems a bit under-rehearsed at times, with some softness on lines and fuzzy timing, the actors acquit themselves reasonably well. As the

giving the various locations an eerie sameness.

It all works reasonably well, although this is one instance where some visual images of rhinos might have helped add to the atmosphere.

This absence is notable since, for a long time,con-con productions

rumpled and ambivalent Berenger, Tom Kondilas is a shrug wrapped in a helpless sigh. Berenger is not much of a hero, which helps make the playwright’s points land with even more heft. We are all Berengers, making our way through life and obsessed with

the details of our existence, unable to see how we can affect major changes charging in our direction.

Still, Kondilas’ Berenger eventually manages to rouse himself to mount a defense of humanity.

Mike Frye makes a nice turn as Jean, morphing from pain-in-the-ass propriety to a creature motivated only by monstrous impulse. And Kayla Gray adds a piquant note of normalcy, for a while, as Daisy.

Among the other performers who play incidental characters and rhinos, David L. Munnell is a standout in the dual role of Logician and Botard. Tall and lean, Munnell consistently captures the acting style that director Wilhelm is pursuing: arch and just far enough outside of reality to make Ionesco’s words ring true. Also turning in solid work are Joseph Milan, Rocky Encalada and Jeanne Task, along with Kim Woodworth and Natalyn Baisden.

More than 50 years ago, Rhinoceros offered people a view of life as nonsensical and defying the presumptions of logic. Those same words are continually used these days to describe the president of the United States and his daily (hourly!) attempts to destroy democratic institutions. Meanwhile, many people in Trump’s base and those in his party feel themselves growing a hardened skin, and pawing at the ground eager for physical confrontation instead of reasoned thought.

In a deft touch, Ionesco doesn’t just paint the rhinos as awful.

Indeed, there is beauty in their natural state which is physically dominant and without a shred of moral restriction. They devour and destroy, because that is how they were made.

This all makes Rhinoceros less an absurd comedy than a sober and all too frightening allegory.

It feels good to pardon Sheriff Joe? It makes you happy to ban transgender people from the military? Join the herd, your rhino suit awaits.

By Daniel Wessler Riordan FIRST TIME WRITER/DIRECTOR Geremy Jasper has much in common with the scrappy protagonist of his new film Patti Cake$, opening Wednesday at the Cedar Lee. They both display some talent and have plenty of heart, and you’ll find yourself rooting for both to succeed in the end. And to some degree, they both do.

Patti (Aussie Danielle MacDonald, in a breakout performance) is a lower-middle-class Jersey girl. She works at a dreary neighborhood bar to help support her boozy exsinger, hairdresser mother Barb (New York stage actress Bridget Everett) and her chain-smoking, chair-bound grandmother (the always underappreciated character actress, Cathy Moriarty). Dubbing herself “Killa P,” we see early on that Patti “has bars,” as they say, showing off her rap skills with a wonderfully profane and satisfying drubbing of the neighborhood bully/local rap hero in a street-corner rap battle.

It’s these kinds of moments, where MacDonald’s charisma is on full

display, that keep you rooting for Patti despite the story’s trafficking in a DJ’s record stack worth of rags-toriches cliches.

Patti is a pharmacy tech by day and do-ragged crooner by night.

She dreams of rap stardom and sees her rhymes as the ticket out of her doldrums. Supported with blind positivity by her best friend and musical sidekick Hareesh (Siddharth Dhananjay, playing his role with earnest, comedic gusto), Patti endeavors to make a demo album and get it into the hands of her musical

idol, the rapper and producer O-Z (Sahr Ngaujah, costumed oddly in anachronistic ’90’s garb). Along the way, Patti discovers Basterd the Antichrist (Mamoudou Athie, from Netflix’s The Getdown), a stoic noiserocker-cum-genius music producer.

He’s got both talent as a producer and a secret, sensitive, soul — the same one that all indie love interests seem to have.

Patti faces some bumps along the way: A shoehorned “chance meeting” with O-Z doesn’t go as planned, and her mother Barb seems at one point

to be at the end of her rope. But it’s no spoiler to tell you things don’t end in tragedy. You’ll recognize almost immediately that a film this breezy couldn’t handle the weight of its protagonist finding ultimate failure.

Jasper directs the film sincerely, but with a kind of kitchen-sink approach, hurling every tactic of low-budget indie filmmaking at us — handheld shaky-cam, quick zooms, smash cuts, music cue drop-offs that punctuate poignancy, dream sequences, and fantasy trips — all in an effort to differentiate his comingof-age indie from the piles of others.

Some of it sticks, some of it doesn’t.

It’s really the chemistry of the cast and the charming lead performance

by MacDonald that keep us absorbed.

In the end, Jasper’s Patti Cake$ is like a pop song with a good hook.

You might find yourself smiling and singing along, but in the end, it’s forgettable.

SPOTLIGHT: I DO ... UNTIL I DON’T WRITER-DIRECTOR LAKE BELL says the concept for I Do … Until I Don’t, her new indie comedy opening at the Cedar Lee Theatre, came to her years ago. Bell stars as Alice, a woman struggling to make her marriage work with Noah (Ed Helms), a salesman on the verge of bankruptcy.

“This movie is deeply personal and based on my own reflections and investigations about the subject of marriage and committed relationships,” she tells Scene via phone from Los Angeles. “I started from a place that was more cynical.”

She says she was initially more like the film’s antagonist Vivian (Dolly Wells), a documentary filmmaker out to debunk the concept of marriage as a lifetime commitment. Vivian thinks a marriage should simply be a 7-year contract (with the option to renew).

In her portrayal of Alice, Bell had to tap into her insecurities. A frumpy, blundering woman who

obsesses over her hair, Alice puts aside her ambitions to work in advertising so she can help Noah run his foundering business. On top of that, they’re struggling to conceive a child. All that makes her so vulnerable that she signs up to be a part of Vivian’s documentary movie/study without really considering the consequences.

“She definitely apologizes for the space she takes up,” says Bell when

asked about the character. “That has a lot to do with the confidence she has in her relationship and the insecurities that have festered over the years. She’s deeply honest, and she’s a little lame, and she’s still finding her voice. She and Noah have been together for so long — since they were kids — that parts of their relationship and the way they communicate have atrophied.”

The other couples in the film

— Alice’s hippie sister Fanny (Amber Heard) and her New Age-y significant other Zander (Wyatt Cenac), and empty-nesters Cybil (Mary Steenburgen) and Harvey (Paul Reiser) — have their share of troubles too. Eventually, their paths all intersect, courtesy of Vivian, who hires them to participate in her film.

Ultimately, however, they aim to prove Vivian wrong.

“The movie is pro-commitment at a time when it’s trendy to be on Tinder and date someone for five seconds,” says Bell. “It’s more provocative and neo-traditionalist in that way. At the end of the day, I love the institution of commitment based on providing such an opportunity to have a shared witness and shared experiences as you go through darkness and lightness.” — Jeff Niesel

A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT A splendid setting – and good food too – at Tinkers Creek Tavern

Cicora SET CLOSE AGAINST A RURAL, tree-lined road, and just at the border between Walton Hills and Valley View, Tinkers Creek Tavern is a casual watering hole and restaurant in a remarkable natural setting. To the west, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park beckons; to the east, a section of the Cleveland Metroparks’ Bedford Reservation awaits. And just outside the back door, rocky Tinker’s Creek, the No. 1 tributary to the mighty Cuyahoga River, forms a splashing ribbon of silver.

From the street, the present-day tavern looks tidy and well maintained, with a rambling quality that suggests decades of remodeling and expansion.

Not surprising, since the building’s provenance stretches back to 1902, when it started off as a private home before morphing into a public house.

(According to the tavern’s website, its liquor license is one of the oldest in Ohio.) In 2007, the property was purchased and completely remodeled

by Kathy Price; son Robert Price serves as executive chef and Kathy’s sister, Kim Steinbrenner, is operational manager.

Still, the tavern is easy to miss.

Should you happen to zoom past it, as we did on an early visit, just roll down your window: Chances are the woodsy aromas emanating from the giant black smoker, set between the parking lot and the restaurant, will beckon you in the right direction.

Beyond the door, you’ll find a tiny lobby area, with the snug barroom on the left and a brighter, more airy dining room on the right. Both rooms are small-ish, neither are elegant, but each have big windows and a rustic charm that suits the rural location and the campfire fragrance that permeates the space.

The real draw, however, is the patio.

Some restaurants may claim to have a riverside patio; on Tinkers Creek Tavern’s patio, about the only thing separating you from a plunge down

a steep embankment into the water is your own good sense.

Perched high above the stony creek bed, the patio is, especially for nature lovers, one of the most beautiful in Northeast Ohio. The long upstream view from any one of the 13 redumbrella-topped tables is as bucolic as anything you’ll find in the region.

The sun sparkles on the fast-flowing water, and rather than Sirius XM, the late-summer soundtrack is blue jays, cicadas, the breeze in the trees and the soft rushing of the creek. While we sit, two deer come out of the underbrush for a sip of water. A peripatetic kingfisher flies back and forth between a favored fishing spot and her nest.

A cadre of young servers in black T-shirts and jeans provides casual, competent and friendly service. Yes, the dreaded “you guys” was spoken more than once; and yes, one runner did inquire, rather disgustingly, “Are ya still pickin’ at that?” But in the most important arenas — attentiveness,

timeliness and accuracy — the staff delivered.

The tavern’s meat-centric offerings take up both sides of the 11-by-17inch laminated menu, where diners will find everything from tacos to an 8-ounce prime filet. In a nod to those who eat their veggies, there is a selection of seven salads; four of them are actually meat free. That includes a well-executed Fried Goat Cheese Salad ($9.95): spinach tossed in sundried-tomato vinaigrette, and topped with grilled red onion, cherry tomatoes, toasted pinenuts and an ample disk of panko-breaded-and-fried goat cheese. It does not include the attentively prepared B.B.Q. Salmon Salad ($11.95): mixed greens, bloodorange vinaigrette, pickled red onions, mandarin oranges, and a plush filet of grilled Faroe Island salmon — crisp along the edges and succulent within — that was as precisely prepared as any you will find for even twice the price.

It doesn’t take long to see, though, that the output of the cherry woodfired smoker — beef brisket, baby back ribs, and especially pulled pork — is the star of the show, and these meats turn up in dishes ranging from the indulgent Mac & Cheese ($15.95) — perfectly al dente cavatappi in a creamy cheese sauce piqued with tiny dice of red tomato and applewood smoked bacon, then topped with an abundance of pulled pork — to the more than ample B.B.Q. Platter, with a sampling of ribs, smoked brisket and that pulled pork. At $24.95, it’s the most expensive dish on the menu. It is also worth every penny if only for the firm, tender and astoundingly meaty baby back ribs encased in a savory mahogany char.

For starters, consider the Memphis Nachos ($9.95), a veritable mountain of thin, crisp homemade potato chips topped with a tangle of moist and mellow pulled pork, a melty layer of Colby Jack cheese, sliced jalapenos, a bit of fresh, tomato-y salsa and a fanciful drizzle of sour cream. Not unique, but beautiful in its ridiculous

and flavors across the board tend to be understated — the kitchen generally executes each dish with commendable precision. An attentive diner gets the impression that what comes to the table is exactly what the chef intended and not simply whatever gets thrown on a plate. The exception to this was one Saturday night’s special of fried chicken ($14.95): The poultry was dry, the mashed spuds were bland and the pretty, slightly charred green beans were overcooked and limp.

For dessert, the kitchen produces an outstanding warm bread pudding ($6.95) — a custardy first cousin to the finest French toast – with rivulets of melting vanilla bean ice cream running down into its crannies, and a touch of chewy caramelization around the edges. Not too sweet, not tarted up with raisins or bananas or other froufrou additions: just a velvety mouthfeel, a buttery flavor and that always welcome hit of cold against hot. Even the coffee was outstanding: Served in big, white mugs, the Kenyan blend was robust but exceptionally smooth.

abundance, it was a well-executed riff on the theme; particular kudos to the kitchen for the trick of keeping the chips crisp and greaseless beneath the strata of pork and cheese. Leaner than most, yet still tender, that pulled pork delivered a petite pop of smoke beneath a scant amount of slightly sweet and sticky Kansas City-style barbecue sauce, with just a hint of tanginess and the barest whisper of black pepper.

As a result, the major sensory notes came from meat and wood, a victory for subtlety over in-your-face sauciness.

While there is a lot of repetition on the menu, and not a lot of novelty —

“Under promise and over deliver” is a trope in the restaurant world.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not a smart business philosophy.

Given the price points, the portion sizes, and the high perceived value — not to mention the captivating creekside setting — both the food and service at this charming spot are far more polished than they have to be.

That makes Tinkers Creek Tavern a fine example of that philosophy at work.

IT’S COVENTRY VILLAGE IN the late ’80s, and Kevin Sutton and his brothers are looking for beer. Kevin is the youngest of eight children — seven brothers, one sister — and on this weekend, three or four of them are crashing at his apartment. Kevin is a student at John Carroll, and his family is Irish Catholic. Alcohol is basically a requirement. When they go to pick up the customary 24-pack of the cheap stuff, they spot a sixer of a beer called Erlanger. None of them had tried it before, so they decide to give it a whirl.

It made a lasting impression.

“From that point forward we were looking for craft beer,” says Sutton. And they had to look pretty hard, as the U.S. still was far from the mid-2000s microbrewery explosion. The search led Sutton and his brothers to what he calls their “favorite pastime”: homebrewing.

A competitive lot, Sutton and his brothers would see who could brew the best beer of the bunch. It pushed him to new heights, he notes. “I felt like I would one-up everyone else and start a distillery.”

That distillery is now Seven Brothers. It’s set up in a barn in LeRoy Township, outside Kevin’s home town of Painesville.

Gracious in his one-upmanship, Sutton named the distillery and its products after his family. (Well, most of his family. He did, however, name a “sweet but strong” signature drink called “The Angry Sister” to make up for leaving her out.)

Seven Brothers isn’t a big distillery, but it’s growing. When Sutton opened six years ago, it was producing two to three hundred bottles per product per quarter.

Now that number is closer to 1,000.

Additionally, they’ve expanded their liquor line and repackaged it into sleek, modern-looking bottles with an eye-catching logo.

Rather than limiting the distillery to one kind of spirit, Sutton distills most of the majors: vodka, gin and whisky. (Rum should be available by early October.)

While the catch-all approach might fall short in other hands, Sutton

achieves quality spirits in all categories.

The infused vodkas, cinnamon and espresso (made with Phoenix coffee), are clean-sipping spirits far removed from the sickly sweet flavored spirits found at college parties. The Seven Botanicals gin, which won a silver medal in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, is flavorful but not too “hot” (boozytasting in industry parlance). Sutton thinks of it as a non-gin drinker’s gin.

And the wonderful Hickory Smoked Whisky (note the Irish spelling: no “e”) tastes, as head of business development John Lesnick puts it, “like Scotch and bourbon met at a barbecue.”

Sutton approaches distilling “like a mad science experiment.”

That’s pretty apt, considering he built his stills from scratch with no engineering experience. Early on in his tinkering, he “stumbled on” the idea of vacuum distillation while looking for ways to heat the still without an open flame. Now, all his stills use this rare bit of booze technology. He heats his still with 150-degree water instead of the usual 330-degree steam. The benefit, as Sutton sees it, comes in taste: “You’re not boiling away all the flavor.”

One of the greatest benefits of the distillery is that it has brought Sutton closer to home. Before Seven Brothers he was a national sales manager for a construction company and traveling a lot. “It was tough on the family,” he says. “Now, I’m literally just a few doors down.”

He and his wife, also a Painesville native, will soon celebrate their 25th anniversary.

As for the namesake brothers: One other made it in the booze business. He owns Industrial Revolution Brewing in Erie, Colorado. The family is proud, says Sutton, adding that his brother “makes excellent beer.”

“Alcohol runs in our veins,” he says. “In more ways than one.”

When it opens on Sept. 5, Marble Room Steak and Raw Bar (623 Euclid Ave., 216-523-7000) will immediately jump to the front of the line in terms of Clevelandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most impressive dining rooms. The immaculately preserved interior boasts 40-foot ceilings, weighty columns, ornate chandeliers and storybook staircases. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want Clevelanders and visitors to our city to enjoy the magniďŹ cent space we have restored and indulge in a one-ofa-kind dining concept marrying history and modern cuisine with professional, gracious service,â&#x20AC;? explains Malisse Sinito, Marble Room owner and president of Millennia Hospitality Group, which owns the property. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a remarkable undertaking, but a labor of love as my family is from Cleveland and we want to give the city another reason to be proud.â&#x20AC;?

The menu will blend traditional steakhouse fare like prime steaks and seafood with a raw bar and sushi menu. Chefs Brandon Veres, Kyle Anderson and Jango Enkhtaivan will oversee the expansive savory offerings while pastry chef Dwight Penney will be in charge of the housemade ice cream, pastries and breads.

The restaurant will open for dinner service on Tuesday, Sept.

OTANI NOODLE TO TAKE OVER SHUTTERED NOODLECAT LOCATION DOWNTOWN Well, it didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take long to find out what would be replacing

Noodlecat on Euclid Avenue.

Just two weeks after Jonathon Sawyer announced the downtown locationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s closure, there is good news for both downtown diners and ramen fans: Otani Noodle, which has operated a slurp shop in Uptown for just over a year, is set to take over the address.

There arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t too many details in the Facebook announcement except that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all coming soon and it will be a second location for Otani, not a relocation.

In place of the now-ubiquitous quick-serve process that finds diners faced with countless choices and infinite permutations, Otani proffers a perfect 10-item roster.

The straightforward pictorial menu consists exclusively of predesigned bowls numbered 1 through 10. The most prevalent broth here is tonkotsu, a rich and opaque brew made from longsimmered pork bones. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the star of roughly half the choices.

Rounding out the broths are miso, made from fermented bean paste, shoyu, a soy-based broth, and the odd man out, tom yum goong, the popular Thai hot and sour soup.

Most bowls come with bouncy ramen noodles, which have the consistency of al dente egg noodles. Since they continue to cook in the hot broth, the quicker you eat them, the better they are.

The tom yum goong swaps the ramen for rice noodles, and one of the shoyu bowls contains udon.

Each bowl is topped with a different main event, from sliced char siu roast pork or simmered pork belly to crispy tempura-fried shrimp or thin and crisp chicken or pork cutlets, which are fried to order, sliced and laid on top of the soups. Most also contain a soy-marinated soft (though closer to hard) boiled egg, scallions, seaweed, veggies and mushrooms.

SWEET HOME ALABAMA Jason Isbell’s upbringing influenced his eclectic approach

By Jeff Niesel SINGER-SONGWRITER JASON Isbell says his upbringing has lots to do with his ability to mix country, rock and pop. He wouldn’t be the musician he is if he hadn’t grown up in northern Alabama.

When he was a kid, his “daycare” consisted of going to his grandparents’ house and learning to play various instruments.

“My granddad was a Pentecostal preacher,” says Isbell via phone from his Nashville home. In support of their terrific new album, The Nashville Sound, he and his band, the 400 Unit, perform tonight at the Goodyear Theater. “When I was really little, we spent our days with them before we went to school. I would stay with them often during the summers too. He was a musician who played all sorts of different instruments. He could play fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin. He taught me how to play all of those but mostly guitar because he would play lead on an instrument like

banjo, and I would play rhythm guitar. We did that for hours at a time.”

Isbell would eventually find success with Drive-By Truckers, a band that came across as the thinking man’s Southern rock group. He joined the ensemble after its fourth album but departed in 2007 after three albums. That same year, he issued his first solo album, Sirens of the Ditch.

“It was kind of difficult to get the first solo album together since I was still touring with the Truckers when I started it,” he says. “I would just work on it for a couple of days at a time. At the time that we made that record, I wasn’t planning on having a solo career, but it was really convenient when I found myself on my own to be able to go out and tour in support of something. It’s a lot different when you’re making a record as a side project than when it’s your main creative output.”

For his last three solo albums,

Isbell worked with Dave Cobb, a guy who generated a reputation as a quality country producer after moving to Nashville in 2011 and producing acts such as Sturgill Simpson, Anderson East and Chris Stapleton.

“We met at a show in Nashville,” says Isbell when asked about how he first met Cobb. “I played a show at a small bar and he had recently moved to town. I had heard some of the work he had done on a Secret Sisters record. I grew up with those girls.

They’re from the same town that I am. I’ve known them since they were born pretty much. They’ve been singing beautiful together since they were 5 and 6 years old.”

While working on a song for the Squidbillies soundtrack, Isbell heard a track Cobb had produced with George Jones. Impressed with Cobb’s production, he knew then that he wanted him to record his next solo album, 2013’s Southeastern.

Jones went through the entirety of George’s career,” he says. “Sonically, he only had a few minutes to work with. But every few seconds, the sound shifted from George’s early work to the work he did in the ’80s and ’90s. It represented all his different periods. I just thought that was brilliant. I figured if he could do that, he must be a good person to work with.”

Since Cobb hadn’t set up a proper studio and Isbell was in the process of marrying singer Amanda Shires, recording Southeastern proved to be a challenge.

“It was a very hectic time,” says Isbell. “I was getting married while we were making that album.

We wrapped up the tracking on Thursday night at midnight, we had a rehearsal dinner on Friday, and I got married Saturday, and Sunday I went in and finished a few things up before leaving for our honeymoon.

It was a busy time. The record was made at Dave’s house. A lot of the

MUSIC vocals and guitars were recorded in his dining room, which is a big open room with one of those raised ceilings designed to make your family sound bigger and happier than they really are. It made a good room for vocals. It was a great experience.

For The Nashville Sound, the band recorded at RCA Studio A, and for the first time since 2011’s Here We Rest, Isbell’s backing band, the 400 Unit, receives co-billing on the album.

“The attitude and purpose is the same but the success of each album gave us a little bit of room on the next record, so we could get better equipment and sit in the same room more while we were recording,” says Isbell. “For this album, everyone could play at the same time instead of in isolation.”

The album opens with the somber “Last of My Kind.” Isbell wonders, “Am I the last of my kind?” over a bit of gently strummed acoustic guitar and a touch of piano.

“Sometimes, people think it’s me narrating that song,” says Isbell.

“I took some of it from my own

experience. You have to do that. But it’s not entirely me. I’m certainly not that person, but I can remember feeling alienated like the main character is. I called on memories of the people I grew up with. I came from a small town in Alabama. I know people who went off to college and didn’t make it or tried to move to bigger cities for more opportunity but didn’t quite find a place. I was trying to explain what that’s like.”

On the hard-rocking “Cumberland Gap,” a tune with only a hint of twang to it (think Green-era R.E.M.), Isbell uses the Cumberland Gap as a metaphor for getting stuck in a small American town.

“The political climate motivated me to talk more openly about that sort of thing,” Isbell says. “I think people have a responsibility to speak their minds in this day and age.

My awareness grows every day if I do it right. I always thought I came from nothing and started at the bottom. But when I realized what the bottom really was, I realized that was something I never had to see. There were a lot of doors that were open for me automatically just because I was a white American male. The best thing to do is recognize that

“[Singer-songwriter] Dave Rawlings also has a song called ‘Cumberland Gap,’” says Isbell. “I’ve heard it, and it’s not very similar to mine, but it’s a really good song. It’s funny the two would come out so close to one another, but everyone is thinking about that stuff right now.”

and realize that I’ve been given a lot of opportunities that other people haven’t been given.”

In the shimmering “Anxiety,” he muses about how anxiety always gets the “best of him” to the point that he “can’t enjoy a goddamn thing.” It’s an extremely personal, confessional tune.

“I was driving one day and that chorus popped into my head,” says

Isbell when asked about the tune.

“When I got home, I got my wife to help me write that. The anxiety that I have is more of a day-to-day kind of thing than a real problem.

I think anxiety has become a catchall these days, but I didn’t want to look at it that way. I wanted to look at it from the perspective of someone who has anxiety attacks that make it impossible to function sometimes.”

Drive-By Truckers relentlessly toured, and Isbell and his backing band are constantly on the road as well. And yet, Isbell says he still enjoys the time he spends on stage.

“Nowadays, it’s a lot easier to tour,” he says. “I can take my daughter and sometimes my wife joins us when she’s not playing her own shows. If I have my family there, that’s great.

The time on stage is so different from everything else in my life, and I think it should be. That’s important to me. I don’t want to walk around feeling the same way about myself as I do when I’m standing there in front of 2,000 people, but it’s a beautiful thing still, and I enjoy singing those songs as much as ever, even the ones I wrote 15 years ago. There are things there that I need to be reminded of.”

MUSIC GOTTA DANCE Pop singer Betty Who draws inspiration from ’80s pop acts

By Jeff Niesel WHEN SHE WAS “REALLY YOUNG,” pop singer Jessica Anne Newham wrote a song called “Betty Who.” When she was older, she was playing and listening to it so much that she decided to make it her stage name.

“I made a Facebook page right then and there,” says Newham, who now tours and records as Betty Who. She brings her tour in support of her ’80s-influenced new album, The Valley, to the Beachland Ballroom on Friday.

The Australian-born singer studied cello as a child and thought classical music might be her calling.

“I went to school for cello and that’s where I first got my kick into doing this and loving music and wanting to pursue it as a professional,” she says.

She started writing songs when she was 14. After attending a summer program at Berklee College of Music while in high school, she realized she preferred singing and songwriting to playing the cello.

“I got such positive feedback from my teachers and friends,” she says.

“They said I was really good at that. I didn’t know it. That’s what set me on the path.”

Betty Who went on to attend Berklee in the wake of that summer program, where she met producer Peter Thomas. The two began writing and recording songs together. Her career quickly took off from there.

One of her first songs, “Somebody Loves You,” would become a hit.

The clubby tune commences with stuttering synthesizers before Betty Who’s sultry vocals kick in.

“I made that song in the basement of my producer’s parents’ house in Rhode Island,” she says. “It’s hard to imagine taking something like that that was so intimate and having it become a hit on the radio. It was my friend Peter [Thomas] who I have to thank. I have no idea why it connected with listeners. There’s no formula to it. I think the viral video had a lot to do with it and obviously set it off and helped the song. I don’t know what made that happen or what made people like it.”

For her full-length debut, 2014’s Take Me When You Go, she cobbled together singles and songs

from her various EPs. The album’s glistening pop tunes possess a real retro feel.

“My first record is a mix between a group of songs I had put out on my EPs and music I wrote specifically for the record,” she says. “By the time I was making the album, I had so much material that was out that it felt really easy and organic. It was not the beginning of a chapter but the end of it.”

With The Valley, she had to “start fresh,” something she says was “both exciting and terrifying.”

“It took me six months to get my shit together and figure out the kind of artist I wanted to present myself as,” she explains. “I really wanted to make a record that made people dance. That was the No. 1 requirement. I wanted it to be a dance record from start to finish — you can play it as a pre-game soundtrack or put it on a workout playlist. More importantly, when you come to the show, you can let go and dance. I dance a lot in the shows. I had to make music that connected with that and feels like Britney Spears or Beyonce or N’Sync. That was my only criteria.”

An a cappella tune with gospel undertones, the opening title track gives the album a certain kind of poignancy and provides a moment of calm before the dance party begins.

“That was the last song I wrote for the record,” Betty Who says of the title track. “All the other songs were finished. I told my manager I wasn’t done yet until I had the intro. He told me I had to do it quickly or the record would be pressed. I sat down

The giddy, provocative “Mama Say” serves as a tribute to old-school Britney Spears.

“I did that on purpose,” she says of the nod to Spears. “She’s one of my favorite pop stars and humans in the world. I wanted to write a song that sounds like Britney Spears in 2001 but could be something she did today.”

and locked myself in a room for I can’t tell you how long. It was a long time. I wanted to write something I had done on my own. The rest of the record is co-written with some of my amazing friends and artists. I felt like there was a little piece of just me that was missing. I knew I wanted to do a

soulful than it does on the album’s other tracks.

“It was the 21st anniversary of that song,” she says when asked about why she chose to cover it. “It’s almost as old as I am. I think it’s hard to find a song to cover that hasn’t been done before or doesn’t feel overdone. I don’t like doing

covers because of that. I felt like I didn’t remember any of the words to the verses but I remembered the choruses. So we re-wrote some verses but kept the chorus. Peter [Thomas] helped that song come out the way it does. I did a demo vocal at his house, and there was no music. Next thing I knew, it was finished.”

As someone who promotes diversity and regularly performs at gay pride events, Betty Who is clearly troubled by the current political climate.

“You know, this is a tough thing for me to talk about and deal with,” she says. “I feel really helpless. I think a lot of people feel that way.

Because I feel confused, I try to bring joy to people and bring light where there is darkness. I want to make music that makes people feel happy instead of scared. We’re all really scared. I want to bring more light to a scary time.”

MUSIC PROG PROJECT The Stick Men return with their most realized album to date

By Jeff Niesel EVEN AS A REJUVENATED KING Crimson hits the road again (the prog rock band comes to Cleveland on Nov. 24), Crimson bassist Tony Levin has continued to find the time to devote to Stick Men, a side project that includes Crimson drummer Pat Mastelotto and guitarist Markus Reuter.

“It’s not difficult,” he says via phone when asked about juggling time between the Stick Men and Crimson. The Stick Men perform tonight at the Beachland Ballroom.

“I’m very lucky at this stage of my career to be as busy as I am. I’m busier than I’ve ever been. Crimson is reenergized, and Peter Gabriel still tours. Stick Men is my first priority. When Crimson isn’t touring, we look at that part of the calendar to see what we can do with Stick Men. After a few years, it occurred to us that a month at home might be nice, so we added in a few weeks where we don’t tour.”

Levin originally studied classical music. After high school, he attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester and played in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. After moving to New York in 1970, he began working as a session musician and played with the likes of Buddy Rich and Paul Simon.

He joined Peter Gabriel’s band more than 30 years ago, just as the one-time Genesis frontman was working on his self-titled debut album. At the time, Levin purchased a 12-stringed instrument called the Chapman Stick and brought it to the recording session, figuring he’d play it on a few tracks. Gabriel’s producer didn’t go for it.

“I took it to the session, and the producer told me, ‘Put that thing away. I don’t want to see it. It looks so weird,’” Levin recalls. “I didn’t know how to play it then. It’s not difficult to play, but it’s a touch-style instrument.”

While Levin learned to play the Stick (and would play it on Gabriel’s albums and with Crimson), the Stick Men first came together about 10 years ago. Levin had just released Stick Man, an album featuring the Chapman Stick.

“Usually, I just played the bass

side of things,” says Levin. “I had never done an album where I did multiple sticks. That was Stick Man. I liked the album so much, I thought it would be nice to tour and the drummer on it was my bandmate from Crimson. I thought that with another stick player, we could have only three guys and make a lot of noise and play the songs on the album and maybe tackle some King Crimson material. That would be a challenge for the players and hopefully a worthwhile and unique show for the audience.”

The Stick Men have been going strong ever since. Last year, the group issued Prog Noir, an album that shows off the band’s songwriting as much as it shows off the group’s chops. The eerie title track features Bowie-like vocals and dis-

a few years before that and I was missing the commitment of making a major album, so I asked the guys if they would indulge me and spend a few years working on new material.

I wanted the lyrics to be something I would feel good about instead of just something that rhymes. I wanted to go beyond that. All the lyrics are meaningful, and there’s a good balance between my writing and Markus Reuter’s writing. A great composer, he writes in a different style. We like to represent both of us.”

In the wake of the release of Prog Noir, the Stick Men have also released the digital-only live album, Roppongi — Live in Tokyo 2017, which also features Crimson saxophonist and flutist Mel Collins.

“Stick Men tours a lot, and we play a lot of different territories,” says Levin. “The downside of it is that it doesn’t give you a lot of time to write new material. A proper album takes months of devoted time.

We had done our last major album

“To be a proper band, I like the band to have its own sound and music, whether it’s a big following or

small following,” says Levin. “You want to keep putting out material even if you’re busy. You have to have some product out there, so people don’t just hear the same old music.

We do our best to have a flow of new material, whether it’s a live thing or collaborations with other people.”

Levin says it’s simply a coincidence that Crimson is hitting some of the same markets at the Stick Men. “We’re on a five-week tour, and then we head to Austin with Crimson to rehearse for a week,” he says.

“We always do that before starting the second leg of a tour because we add in new material. Even people who saw the last leg will hear some new stuff. After a few years of doing this, we have a huge catalog, and after a few shows, we’ll solidify some new things.”

With Crimson’s eccentric band leader Robert Fripp manning the ship, Levin says he must prepare for just about anything.

“Just today, I received a short list of [Crimson] pieces to rehearse,” he says. “[Fripp] is always surprising us in the band. I have no idea what we’ll tackle. I like that situation. It’s always challenging. It’s a challenge for me because the bass parts from back when before I was in the band are very special. I want to keep what’s special about them and not be a cover band.”

Given the recent induction of Yes into the Rock Hall, does Levin think prog rock might be getting its due?

“I’m not the guy to know,” he says. “I don’t read a lot about what’s going on in music. I have my head down and I’m busy playing. With Stick Men, we play small clubs, at least in the U.S., and with Crimson we played theaters. With Stick Men, when we play Argentina, we play big theaters. That doesn’t really enable me to make a good judgment of progressive music. That’s up to you guys, the journalists, to make the analysis. I’ll just keep my hands on the bass and my head down.”

FRENCH-CANADIAN SINGERsongwriter Richard Petit had recorded a few hit songs in his native Canada over the past 20 years.

But when the music industry took a dive in 2008 just as he released his third album, he decided to reinvent himself.

A huge Pink Floyd fan, he wanted to pay tribute to the band. Dubbed The Wall Live Extravaganza: A Floydian Spectacle, the show does that and then some as it takes a theatrical approach and includes elements from both the album and the movie.

The group performs on Saturday at Hard Rock Live.

Petit’s brother introduced him to Pink Floyd with “Another Brick in the Wall,” a single from the 1979 album The Wall.

“I connected and related to the song,” he says via phone from his Montreal home. “At 7 years old, I knew what I was listening to was something special.”

A few years later, that same brother would introduce him to Pink Floyd — The Wall, the trippy movie based on the Floyd album by the same name.

Two years later, Petit picked up a guitar and started to learn Floyd tunes.

After seeing Roger Waters’ perform in Montreal, he realized he could put together a stage show that would be “The Wall from A to Z.” Also a stage director and TV director, Petit staged The Wall Live Extravaganza: A Floydian Spectacle in 2011 with FrenchCanadian celebrities making cameos throughout the show.

“We did it in that form for two or three years,” he says, “and got deeper and deeper into the study of The Wall.”

Petit didn’t like aspects of the show he saw in Montreal.

“No offense to Roger Waters, but it took a turn that I wouldn’t have taken if I were artistic director,” he says. “It was an amazing show and the ‘wall’ was crazy big, but it abandoned the original story in favor of politics and left behind what the movie and the album was about. I wanted to complete the blank spots

and unanswered questions from the album. I didn’t want it to be a musical but more what a rock opera should be.”

He created a two-level stage with projections, so that he could duplicate visuals from the film. He added two singers, who were also actors.

“Our band isn’t trying to be Pink

“It’s just like you’re going to a play, but it’s not a play,” he says. “The subjects in The Wall are ones that everyone can relate to. It’s about the fear of losing your mind and the search for love. They are subjects that everyone mostly in their teen years can relate to, whether it’s 1987 or 2010. Those subjects connect straight to their reality.”

Hundreds of years from now, we will still talk about it. We incorporated songs from the movie and music they used when they toured The Wall, and we use that music as bridges. We also included songs from [the Pink Floyd album] The Final Cut. I extended The Wall’s universe.”

The show begins with images from World War II, and Petit says it’s like seeing the movie in 3-D.

He says that’s what makes the album so timeless.

“The show is more than a tribute.

It’s like a tribute on steroids. It’s a bigger-than-life cover band and a complete dive into the art of what The Wall is in every aspect.

It’s The Wall and beyond.”

John Mayer/Dawes: After several tours with Dead & Co., where he took on the role of Jerry Garcia in tone and phrasing (though not at all in spirit), John Mayer returns to the world of solo material with his latest album, The Search for Everything. It’s an uptempo record filled with soulful and almost jazzy rhythms that fill out Mayer’s classic lyrics of cheese and longing (“I still keep your shampoo in my shower, in case you want to wash your hair”). But, throughout it all, Mayer’s stuff is pretty fun and danceable; it sounds like a far cry from the “bubblegum tongue” business of the early 2000s. And anyone who spent time with Mayer’s blues output over the years, or his time on the road with Bob Weir, will know that the guy’s got chops: Guitar-attuned listeners will catch enjoyable licks from tunes like “The Theme from ‘The Search for Everything’,” and elsewhere.

George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic: “Ain’t no party like a p-funk party because a p-funk party don’t stop.” So goes the rhyme that you’ll hear ad nauseam

tonight when funkmeister George Clinton performs at House of Blues.

Wild affairs that feature outlandish costumes, Clinton concerts are true spectacles. Clinton serves more as master of ceremonies, often barking out the lyrics with little regard for rhythm, but he still knows how to keep the party going. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in 1997, the seventysomething-yearold regularly comes through town — with or without a new album to promote. Herzog/Forager: Since 2011’s Search, Herzog’s sound has only expanded and built out a refreshing and patently “Cleveland” take on indie fuzz rock. In 2014, the band released the North Shore motorcycle drive-by Boys, and it was a doozy. “Theme for Boys” became something of an anthem that summer, what with its stringed sludge psychedelia and slacker-glam vocals. Similarly, tunes like “Henchman” and “Satan is Real” massaged the musical ideas first shot into the world by

frontman Nick Tolar all those years ago. The guitar thrills are strewn about with abandon, and the album’s overall vibe revolves around alternating upbeat and melancholic reflections on early adulthood. Since then, they’ve been dropping new tunes into their every-now-and-then local shows.

FINDING SONGS: Sadier says the songwriting process is an organic one, and when it came time to write the songs for Finding Me Finding You, she let the tunes come to her.

“Things come to you naturally when you need them — as if by magic,” she says. “I’ve learned to trust that process. When it’s time to write an album, I go to my bag of ideas and then start developing them.” While it might not seem like it on the surface, several songs address social and cultural changes that have recently taken place. “Committed,” a tune that opens with a spoken-word segment before the shimmering synthesizers and cooing vocals kick in, provides a good example. “It’s about the idea of organizing society in a different

way,” says Sadier. “I view society as a body. Just like a body, it has layers of functioning. It’s not like a machine with mechanical parts. It’s more than that. Look at Brexit. After it passed, the British pound was worth 15-percent less, and businesses are leaving. It hasn’t even happened yet. There’s a reaction. This is a song about organizing ourselves with this in mind and thinking of the duration and thinking about spirit rather than just numbers and figures.”

WHY YOU SHOULD HEAR THEM: Album opener “Undying Love” features a mesmerizing combination of percolating synthesizers and seemingly random bleeps and blips, and the somber “Love Captive” includes vocals courtesy of Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor. “Some years ago, we toured briefly with Hot Chip in America,” says Sadier of the collaboration with Taylor. “We did maybe five shows. I befriended Alexis, and we kept in touch. I always wanted to sing a duet with him. Now, I finally had a song about free love and about a couple interrogating themselves about their feelings toward one another.”

They had been together for two and a half years, and she became pretty discontent when she finished college and my brother entered law school because all his time and attention weren’t revolving around her.

In January, she staged this bizarre, soap-opera-esque situation to make my brother jealous, and then broke up with him when he reacted predictably.

After the breakup, my brother became a mess of a person — sobbing all the time and talking about her to anyone and everyone. At the risk of sounding insensitive, he was unbearable. Then, he started talking to her again and they got back together. The second breakup came after he snooped and found out she had been texting her ex-boyfriend. She was telling that guy that she was trying to line up her next boyfriend while still dating my brother. He’s now back in the same situation. He started back at school yesterday. He almost fucked that up last time because of her bullshit, and I don’t want to see that happen again.

Additionally, I feel bad this happened — I really do — but I don’t have the time or patience to have the same conversation with him a million times.
