COUNCIL TEES UP COSTLY SPECIAL ELECTION FOR Q DEAL

THIS WEEK

CLEVELAND CITY COUNCIL MET last week in their final get-together before Sept. 18. Four councilpeople — Mike Polensek, Zack Reed, Jeff Johnson, and Kevin Conwell — had written a letter to Council President Kevin Kelley earlier in the week asking that the next meeting be moved up. There’s a major decision afoot, after all.

If the next meeting were held on or before Sept. 6, the letter said, council would have an opportunity to vote to have the Q Deal referendum on the November ballot.

This would eliminate the need for a costly special election in 2018.

“By doing so,” read the letter, “the Democratic process is respected, and the citizens’ right to vote is upheld. In addition, it will save the city of Cleveland over $700,000 for the cost of a special election, which would only anger the citizens even more than they are already over this matter.”

But the issues addressed in the letter did not come up at the council meeting. Council passed other pieces of legislation — including a big spending package targeted at neighborhood development — but if Polensek and Johnson hadn’t made comments during the meeting’s “miscellaneous” portion, the Q Deal referendum would’ve gone ignored.

“I asked them if they were Democrats,” Polensek told Scene in a phone call after the meeting. “Do you believe in democratic principles?

Because I’m looking at this body and I don’t recognize it anymore. What’s the point of City Council if you’re just going to do what the rich and powerful want done in this city?”

Polensek objected to what he viewed as deliberate stalling tactics by city leadership, and said that council meeting dates have been changed in the past.

“Who are they kidding?”

Polensek said. “They might be fooling the newbies, but I was Council President. We’ve changed dates before, if there was a death in the family or another emergency. As long as everyone gets advance notice, you can set the date whenever you want with the concurrence of council.”

Kelley, who did not respond to the councilman’s comments at the time, had reportedly opened the meeting with remarks about Donald Trump and leadership. He’d issued a statement earlier in the week denouncing white supremacy in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville. Polensek said Kelley and council should use this

opportunity to distance themselves from Trump.

“Show real leadership,” Polensek said, growing agitated on the phone. “Send a message that we stand with the people. How many ridiculous arguments are you going to make? How many roadblocks are going to throw in front of the citizens? It’s embarrassing.”

Kelley, when reached by Scene, said that even though Polensek

might no longer recognize the body, he recognized a council that “appropriated millions of dollars to invest in neighborhoods that have been largely abandoned by the private sector in an effort to leverage additional private sector investment; a Council that appropriated over $2 million to the Cleveland/Cuyahoga Office of Homeless Services; and

Regarding the Q Deal, Kelley said there was nothing to comment on until the submitted petitions had been certified, “other than that we will follow the directive of the court and the provisions of the Charter.”

Polensek held that the directive of the Ohio Supreme Court was already clear: The citizens have a right to vote, and council has a responsibility to facilitate that vote in the most efficient, fiscally responsible way. But he said he’s expecting leadership to ignore the issue.

“They’re going to put [the Q Deal] on the ballot in the dead of friggin’ winter,” he said. “They’re

FIRSTENERGY WILL CONTINUE RECEIVING ITS HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS IN SUBSIDIES After several years of ongoing debate and a formal decision last fall, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio has given final approval to more than $600 million in subsidies to FirstEnergy.

Last October’s PUCO decision prompted a number of appeals and challenges from environmentalist organizations who opposed the massive “bailout” meant to prop up nuclear and coal-powered plants.

The core argument is that subsidies should flow toward more competitive and renewable sources of energy in Ohio.

The Environmental Defense fund quoted PUCO chairman Asim Haque himself, who said that the funding plan was “undoubtedly unconventional.” EDF went on to underscore that the PUCO/ FirstEnergy decision may set precedent for the electricity industry, where failing power plants are becoming a topic of rigorous debate.

Even FirstEnergy itself challenged the initial ruling, seeking an even greater subsidization program. (The company has said that its credit rating would have fallen below investment grade had PUCO not intervened.) Today, PUCO halted those challenges.

FirstEnergy began collecting the public dollars in January, and will continue to do so through at least 2019.

What that means for Ohio energy customers is an extra $43 on average per year on the electric bill to fund this subsidization program.

(This estimate is based on the 2015 average of 901 kilowatt hours of electricity used per month in a household in the U.S.) What FirstEnergy ends up doing with that extra cash remains to be seen in full. EDF points out that PUCO was close to ordering a specific “grid modernization” program from FirstEnergy; rather, these hundreds of millions of dollars seem to have no clear objective attached to them.

WILLOUGHBY SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL IS DROPPING ITS CONFEDERATE MASCOT The Willoughby-Eastlake School District has dropped its controversial “Rebel” mascot, or at least committed to modifying the way that “Rebel” is interpreted.

The depiction is currently that of a Confederate soldier.

Scene reported in 2015 that at Willoughby South HS, the Confederate flag is a symbol of school pride. The iconography came under fire most especially that year, after Dylann Roof murdered nine black people at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church in South Carolina.

More recent events, including the violence in Charlottesville, Va., where Confederate flags were seen flying next to Nazi flags and other icons of racial violence, accelerated the decision that had reportedly long been in the works.

“In light of the changing perception of the Civil War rebel icon,” a spokesperson said, “Willoughby-Eastlake City School has made a decision to move forward to identify a new figure to represent the South High Rebels.”

GROUP BACKS OFF PLANS TO PROTEST CONFEDERATE FLAG SALES IN LORAIN COUNTY As one more piece of Charlottesville aftermath news, we turn westward, where the Lorain County Fair Board has announced that it will not prohibit the sale of Confederate flags at the fair this week, raising concerned responses from local residents and groups.

The Fair Minded Coalition for Lorain County, for one, has objected to the sale of the Confederate flag (and other products with that symbol) and the apparent promotion of its cultural meaning.

Recent events have thrown that opposition into even starker terms.

But the Coalition announced this week that it will back off from planned “activities,” alluding to potential protests that members were organizing for fair week (Aug. 21 - 27). The group is citing the specter of violence, and is now stating that they’d rather not stoke that fire any more than need be.

“We’re reconsidering what

actions we will be doing in Wellington — if we take any action at all,” Jeanine Donaldson, head of the Coalition, said at a public event last week. “If people can come out and do what they did in Charlottesville, Virginia, what’s stopping those same people that are pro-selling-the-flag at the fair from organizing and coming down to Lorain County?”

The fair board’s own bylaws insist: “Under no circumstance will items of a questionable nature be sold or permitted on fairgrounds or in the building.” But the board has long held that the Confederate flag sales are a matter of free speech and must be treated as such.

Board members told the Chronicle-Telegram that there’s a false equivalency at work when their approval of certain vendors is made to seem like approval of certain cultural phenomenon. “Are they saying that because we allow Confederate merchandise to be sold we’re white supremacists?” Board President Brian Twining said to the newspaper. — Sandy

ROBOTS ARE QUIETLY BECOMING OHIO’S BOOMING WORKFORCE Over the last decade or so, automated labor has grown as a robust presence throughout the state and its impact is starting to be more directly seen and felt, both commercially and politically Last week, the Brookings Institute released a new study looking at the regional locations of industrial robots. Or, in the institute’s phrasing, “‘automatically controlled, reprogrammable machines’ capable of replacing labor in a range of tasks.”

Michigan, the traditional home of the automotive industry, is the top state with 12 percent of the nation’s working robots (28,000), while Ohio is in second place with 8.7 percent (20,400 robots). Our neighbors to the west, Indiana, are right behind in third place 8.3 percent (19,400).

A closer look at the Brookings’ study shows where, exactly, in Ohio these robots are most likely to be found. Both Toledo, with nine robots for every 1,000 people, and the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metro area, with 4.5 robots per 1,000 people, rank in the top 10 of the 100 largest metro areas from the study.

Toledo is, of course, home to a KUKA Robotics facility and longtime automotive plant the Toledo Assembly Complex, which itself is home to the Toledo Jeep plant where

The Youngstown-Warren area is a bit more interesting, though.

While that metro are has famously struggled with the shrinking steel manufacturing economy, it’s beginning to see success in more high-tech jobs, like the Youngstown Business Incubator which has a focus on “additive manufacturing” (aka 3D printing).

And it’s that sort of development that could help serve a region that, as The Daily Beast notes, is already home to thousands of companies producing “metals, plastics, and polymers” as well as the region’s “biomedical, automotive, and defense industries.”

But this isn’t the only area of robotics that’s made a big impression in Ohio. Gov. Kasich made a big push to set aside a few stretches of highway throughout the state as “Smart Mobility Corridors,” including a stretch near Columbus.

There are also efforts to bring such tests to corridors throughout

Northern Ohio, too.

The central Ohio hub, a 35-mile stretch of State Route 33 around Marysville, is being wired with fiber optic cables for data collection.

Ohio State and Honda are both nearby, as are the Transportation Research Center and NHTSA Vehicle Research Test Center. And Wind River, a subsidiary of Intel, has already announced a program with OSU, the TRC, and the city of Dublin to test self-driving vehicles on this stretch of road.

As for the larger impact of robot labor, the Brookings study points toward, but stops short of, larger conclusions behind the placement of these industry robots, including economic anxiety around robots taking human jobs and the political impact.

And that political impact is certainly worth paying attention to. That Daily Beast story highlights the disconnect between the growing high-tech industry in Youngstown and the manufacturing plans that President Trump has touted for the area, promising that cracking down on the unbalanced steel trade of other nations will magically revive an industry that many

consider long gone from the area.

To see the other side of the impact of robotics, though, look no further than the Carrier plant near Indianapolis. Despite President Trump’s boast of saving jobs at the factory last fall, it was later determined that many of those supposedly saved jobs will be lost to automation at the plant. More robots.

Brookings plans to release another study later this year that more closely examines the disruption to metro areas brought by the changing robotics world.

We can only hope that Brookings doesn’t hire robot researchers to taint the data.

FORUMS FOR DAYS The Cleveland Mayoral primaries are Sept. 12. The incumbent Frank Jackson’s favored method of campaigning has been standing on street corners and waving at cars.

But on Saturday, he appeared for the first time alongside some of his challengers at a Glenville forum.

He’ll appear this Friday at an official debate, hosted by the City Club at the Global Center for Health

Innovation. The lunchtime event is sold out.

overdose crisis and who more often than not will end up registering as a licensed driver for the ďŹ rst time at the state BMV. Organ donation is presented as a way of saving lives, whether that be the archetypal classmate who is using heroin or the terminally ill patient desperately in need of a pancreas.

Despite the stark framing, only about 56 percent of Ohio adults are registered as organ donors.

Based on simple observation alone, a rising number of those men and women are opiate addicts.

By 10 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10, quite soon after she snorted a fatal dose of heroin, Jordan Daus was in a bed at University Hospitalsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Ahuja Medical Center. Her family surrounded her, weeping and working fast to make decisions on her behalf. The clock ticked quickly, but there was still a sliver of hope that Jordan might be saved.

A Facebook page called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Pray for Jordanâ&#x20AC;? displays the week in gripping photos.

Jordan didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s license, but she had made the very clear decision to tell her mother that she wanted to be an organ donor in the event of an unexpected tragedy.

In the hospital, it falls to the next of kin to articulate a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wishes (even if his or her ID bears the Ohio organ donor insignia). For years, Daus was a secretary to a heart transplant surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic. The topic of organ donation regularly came up in conversation with her daughters. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They were heavily involved with that I did,â&#x20AC;? Daus says. She knew what her daughter would have wanted.

Almost immediately at the

hospital, doctors explained to the Daus family that the outlook was not good for Jordan. Extensive brain damage was an inevitability, and a spectrum of tedious, mechanical tests were undertaken to conďŹ rm brain death. When asked, Jordanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parents explained that their daughter quite clearly wished to be a donor. For the Daus family, it was, at the very least, one less thing to worry about as the worst unfolded at the hospital.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hard to imagine a more devastating tightrope to walk: To move forward with the organ donation process, doctors needed to run tests to conďŹ rm brain death.

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s done through a three-test process wherein two physicians must independently verify that all brain activity has ceased and that there is no medical hope for resuscitation. The apnea test is particularly harrowing; Jordan was taken off the ventilator, and physicians tested brain activity and physiological reďŹ&#x201A;exes over the course of 10 minutes. The threat of cardiac arrest loomed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were still ďŹ ghting for Jordanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life,â&#x20AC;? Daus says, holding back tears as the sun sets in Chagrin Falls. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a conďŹ&#x201A;ict. Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re ďŹ ghting for your daughterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life, but yet you want her to be able to have this test that says your daughterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dead because you want other people to get her organs.â&#x20AC;?

Time, somehow, moves excessively fast and ploddingly slow in those moments.

By Thursday, Jordan was strong enough, in a distant and relative sense of the word, to withstand a 10-minute apnea test. Shortly after noon, she was determined to be brain dead.

FEATURE men and women who overdose on heroin in 2017. With a caring and dedicated family to guide her final wishes through a grueling five-day hell in the ICU, Jordan’s death played out painfully. More than 100 of her friends and classmates came through the hospital to say goodbye and, inevitably, to see the cold reality of the opiate crisis unfold against their own personal lives.

Prior to the Saturday surgery, the LifeBanc procurement team came into the picture. All donation-related decisions are made by them and directed by their professionals before and after the operation. For Jordan, the team was able to save her heart, liver, kidney and pancreas, each of which went to a different person.

(While those life-saving organs are healthy in most cases, known opiate addicts are not allowed to donate tissue.)

Recently, Jordan’s liver recipient reached out to the Daus family. He donated to Team Free Spirit, their Run for Recovery fundraising team, which put them over the top of their goal. Over emails, he has explained to the family how cherished Jordan and her memory are to him.

Daus says that she’s found great solace in how parts of her daughter remain on this plane, and how her organ recipients have responded in joy. The man who received her liver, an Ohio man, tells Daus that her daughter saved his life. Every morning, at sunrise, he and his wife give thanks to Jordan, and every night, at sunset, they express their gratitude again.

These days, Daus is a fixture at Lifebanc’s Richmond Road office. She joins other parents in the current of grief and in the optimism of ongoing organ donation advocacy and outreach. When she says that Jordan’s death cannot and will not be in vain, she’s not alone in her hopes.

Marlene Shay sees the world through similar lenses. She continues to visit Lifebanc for counseling, and she’s taken on a leadership role in the organization’s community engagement work. It’s not something that she’d have envisioned five years ago, but Lifebanc’s 2017 Legacy of Life Award winner now wears the title proudly.

In January 2014, her son Adam overdosed on heroin and, shortly thereafter, died in the neurointensive care unit at the Cleveland Clinic. He was 21.

“He was a kind, generous person who thought of others much more than he thought of himself,” Shay says. Three years out, she talks about her son often. She shares the stories that brought him to the hospital that winter and she points out how downright thrilled Adam was to become a registered organ donor.

Leaving the BMV on his 21st birthday, Adam excitedly told his girlfriend that he may be able to save someone’s life one day. “He knew what he was saying yes to,” his mother says now, adding that Adam was very interested in the ontological and the ripples of consciousness that all of our lives create.

“We had probably talked about it at some point,” she says, referencing Adam’s decision to register. “It was not a topic of conversation that was, you know, ‘You have to…’ or ‘This is why…’” Of course, on the other side of her family’s tragedy, Shay is extremely informed on the matter and urges men and women in the Northeast Ohio community to think about it and consider how impactful organ donation can be. She dispels myths, noting that doctors will still work to save your life even if you’re a registered donor and that no major religion prohibits organ donation.

In the end, Adam was able to give his two kidneys and his pancreas to two people who needed them desperately.

It’s hard not to reckon with the seemingly divine forces of fate when Shay says that her son contracted E. coli when he was 6 years old and almost lost a kidney to the disease. For 21 days, he was on dialysis at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital; the medical procedure worked, miraculously, and Adam went home to live out his childhood. He and two siblings grew up together, passing through youth’s various and wonderful rites of passage, all leading him to one last trip to the hospital.

The woman who received one of his kidneys and his pancreas is Karen Goodwin, a fellow local artist and former opiate addict herself.

She waited purposefully for a year before getting in touch with Adam’s family. As Shay says, she wanted to give Adam a full year of sobriety before opening that door to communication.

“I’m so proud of him,” Shay says.

“I refuse to stand behind a pillar of shame.”

Daus shares the story of her daughter’s death often. She warns young Northeast Ohio students that a heart-rending fate awaits those

who don’t actively resist the addiction crisis, who don’t educate themselves about what the disease of addiction can do to them or to loved ones. It’s not a mission that she sought, but rather one that was pushed onto her.

She’s risen to the tragic challenge.

She says that she was particularly taken with one of her daughter’s friend’s comments on her Facebook page in the days following her death: “Jordan Daus was one of the most judged, least judgmental people I knew.”

“She was an old soul,” Daus says.

“She always felt that she didn’t belong here, that she belonged somewhere else.” Knowing that about her daughter, Daus speaks with a sense of clarity that comes from her faith.

Now and then, she shares a story about the unseen forces working in the background of her life. In 1993, Daus moved to the Cleveland area; Jordan was not yet born. She took a job as the assistant to the chairman of neurology at the Cleveland Clinic.

His name was Hans Luders, and he filled a mentor role in Daus’ early career.

It was only in the weeks after Jordan’s death, when sundry medical bills began filling the mailbox, that Daus learned that Luders, now a neurologist at University Hospitals’

Ahuja Medical Center, had been the physician who administered Jordan’s EEG. He had been the man in whose hands Jordan’s final moments of life were placed.

“I believe that her life was mapped out for 18 years,” Daus says. “I

don’t know how long mine is but I know that it is mapped out, and I know that certain people cross your life for certain reasons.” It’s the sort of serendipity that would have thrilled Jordan, and it’s a cosmic ripple in which Daus can

find solace these days.

After the undulating chaos of their daughter’s death, the Daus family found themselves at Evergreen Hill Cemetery on a snowy November day in 2014, less than pleased with the prospect of burying their daughter right alongside the 40-mph traffic of Franklin Road. And so they were brought to the historic section, north of the rest of the cemetery, where stone markers stand tall from the 1800s.

“There was about a foot of snow out here,” Daus says, scanning the knoll. “We got out of the car and stood: The sun hit my face and my girlfriend, and we looked at each other and we said, ‘This is where we’ve got to bury Jordan. She has to be where she sees the sun and the moon.’”

It’s a stirring location, framed by pine trees and birds, and it’s where Daus takes time to reconvene with her daughter. It’s where she reflects on what brought Jordan to this moment, and where the future will take her.

Fallout: Collective Action Workshops As part of MOCA Cleveland’s current exhibition, Constant as the Sun, artists Kate Sopko and Angela Beallor’s installation considers the practice of creating bomb/fallout shelters by creating one of their own inside the museum. Beginning in the 1950s, Americans built fallout shelters in

response to the new concept of nuclear war. Sopko and Beallor’s installation reconsiders these structures and their purpose in our current sociopolitical climate. From noon to 5 p.m. today, MOCA Cleveland hosts Fallout: Collective Action Workshops.

Organized by Sopko and Beallor with Deidre McPherson, these workshops are facilitated by Francis Chiappa, M. Carmen Lane and the Lake Effect Free Alternative Health Clinic. Kedi Stray cats have lived in Istanbul for thousands of years, nearly as long as the city has been standing. The new documentary Kedi offers a gallery-style view of the cats inhabiting Istanbul while citizens offer their thoughts and feelings about the animals in their respective communities. The film shows how the cats live on a day-to-day basis and posits that, despite their stray nature, they have essentially become citizens of Istanbul. It doesn’t have one dominant story to tell, making Kedi closer to an observational nature documentary than a standard narrative documentary. The film is at its best when it allows the audience to focus on a particular cat for a length of time, like the hardened fish thief called “Psychopath” or the rough-and-tumble cafe cat named “Carefree.” Allowing the personalities of the cats to shine pushes the film into more than just animal photography. Fresh off her presentation at Weapons of Mass Creation Fest 8, acclaimed local hand letterer Lisa Lorek offers a workshop on hand lettering at TownHall from 7 to 9 tonight. Open to artists of all skill levels, participants will learn about typography, crafting and pairing lettering styles, forming compositions and additional tricks and tips from Lorek. By the end of the workshops, each participant will have crafted words and a quote to take home.

ART GRADUATION DAY Popeye and Survival Kit team up for Turn Up II

By Dott von Schneider WITH A ROSTER THAT CONTAINS artists with some already impressive credentials, Turn Up II: Alma Mater Edition is a group exhibition featuring emerging artists from around the state of Ohio. With last year’s focus on CIA grads, this year there are artists representing Kent, Akron, and Cleveland State University. Says Omid Tavakoli, director of PopEye Gallery/Survival Kit, “This is the direction we really want to go into, which is showing more emerging artists in this space to get their feet wet. It’s a great opportunity to reach out to other universities to see what is being made in Ohio.”

This exhibition is a wonderful turnout of what is happening out there around our state.

Currently an Imaging Arts MFA candidate at the prestigious Rochester Institute of Technology, Yiyun Chen holds a BA in studio art photography from Cleveland State and a post-BA in fine art photography and video from Cleveland Institute of Art. Yiyun’s photography presents an ethereal beauty in the awkwardness of his subjects. Yiyun has three portraits that grace the southwesterly wall.

It is difficult not to contemplate who these people are.

Cleveland Institute of Art graduate Xyl Lasersohn dominates the north wall with a take on the relationship between painting and video games or puzzles. Reminiscent of the late artist Philip Guston, Kidney bean shapes, muted tones and blocks dominate these paintings.

Lasersohn’s artwork has us traveling throughout its surfaces as we try to solve the equations in front of us and successfully creating a situation where we cannot possibly unravel the answers.

Kit Palencar, hailing from University of Akron and a current MFA candidate at Kent State, uses painting and graphite on paper to exhibit portraits that dive into the psychological. They are almost disparitions under all the ghostly layers. As we turn the corner, we are confronted with Kathryn

puzzle. A 2017 CIA graduate, See’s artwork recalls the twisted turns of emotions brought physical. It is difficult to hold back from trying to rearrange the individual pieces as we contemplate the sculpture.

Presented as a human/ bird hybrid, our yellow and orange friend is crouched in his nest at the point of ecstasy in all its messy glory. All of Diaz’s work in this show have high impact. He has also curated the last two Queer Arts shows during Cleveland Pride. His artwork is not to be missed, and certainly impossible to ignore.

STAGE A PASSION UNRESOLVED All the hurdles aren’t quite cleared in Equus at Blank Canvas Theatre LET’S TALK ABOUT PASSION. (No, you don’t have to tell small children to leave the room.) Passion, and the related phenomenon of worship, is a powerful engine driving creativity and achievement. As the philosopher Friedrich Hegel has said, “Nothing great in the world has ever been accomplished without passion.”

Then again, it seems that most of the awful things in the world have also been the product of passion.

Can anyone doubt the passion empowering those young white men in Charlottesville who, with spittle spraying from their lips and their eyes afire, shouted down those who were different from themselves? Indeed, passion is a two-edged sword and when wrestling for control of that sword, it’s the person holding the handle who always wins.

Passion is at the core of the play Equus, which is now playing at the Blank Canvas Theatre. And in his program notes, which also offer the Hegel quote above, the theater’s artistic director and director of this show Patrick Ciamacco asks us to think about our own passions. In particular, he muses on those feelings in comparison to those of playwright Peter Shaffer’s central character Alan Strang.

From the very start, we see 17-year-old Alan as a monster, since he’s recently blinded six horses in his charge while working as a stable boy. Set in a psychiatric hospital in southern England, Shaffer immediately adds complexity to the yarn by assigning the Strang case to a shrink who has plenty of his own issues.

Martin Dysart is a child psychiatrist who is moving through his lockstep career with a demonstrable lack of passion.

Since his life has become a series of disappointments, he has qualms about trying to make the kids he counsels as “normal” and as bereft of inspiration as he is. He even has a dream in which he, as a public official in ancient Greece, eviscerates scores of kids and pulls out their intestines. Clearly, this ain’t no Frasier Crane.

The bulk of the play is involved with sorting out how Alan came to this ghastly place in his life, with

scenes involving his mum and dad, and how Dysart becomes further entangled in Alan’s overwhelming horse-y psychosis. This requires a truly poetic approach to the material, since we are cantering across a fraught landscape of mental disorientation, and in that task this production is only partially successful.

The scenic design by Ciamacco is marvelous, featuring a dugout in the center of the elevated stage where Alan spends most of his time. This keeps the teenager front and center, turning him into a visual bull’s eye that others continually target, often to justify their own agendas.

intensity of the horses stops at the neck, as the actors shuffle around the periphery of the stage in a less than compelling manner. And more could have been done to elucidate Alan’s closeness and—let’s just say it: sexual attraction—with one particular horse, Nugget, and a phantom horseman (Daryl Kelley). Where’s a choreographer when you need one?

As Alan, Antonio DeJesus is just as distant and mysterious as you’d expect him to be. His sullen mask eventually slips as he gets used to sharing some truths with Dysart and during his interactions with Jill (Sarah Blubaugh), a young woman who

Six actors portray the horses, wearing sculpted metal horse heads designed by Noah Hrbek, and these are spectacular—large and elegant enough to dominate the fleshy bodies that animate them. What is lacking is the kind of movement that could have made these horses come to life, in the way the horses do, say, in the stage version of War Horse.

In this production, the magical

introduced Alan to the stable owner Harry (Chris Bizub). By refraining from obvious and broad acting choices, DeJesus provides a strong center for the proceedings.

In the role of Dysart, Russell B. Kunz adopts a squishy-friendly aura that seems perfectly right for this therapist. And his dialog scenes with DeJesus are given a deft touch. But Dysart has frequent monologues

directed at the audience, as he shares his thoughts and inner conflicts, and those moments often feel meandering and unfocused. By not shaping those speeches and giving them their own internal momentum, Kunz sacrifices a large part of his character’s demons and desires.

In supporting roles, Andrew Narten and Claudia Esposito are particularly resonant as Alan’s parents, Frank and Dora. It was Dora who first introduced her son to biblical stories, such as the crucifixion, which mixed in his head with his love of horses from western movies and such. And Esposito conveys Dora’s frustration and pain with quiet desperation. As the hard-ass dad, Narten reveals the man’s hypocrisy and shallowness without turning him into a stereotype.

There are moments in this production, when the horses are gathered together and moving in unison, that one gets the feeling of lift-off that Shaffer’s complex script can inspire. But too often, this version is a rather casual trot around a compelling theme.

MOVIES THE LOW END THEORY With Good Time, the Safdie brothers take a realistic approach to the heist flick

By Jeff Niesel WHEN TWILIGHT STAR ROBERT Pattinson saw a still from brothers Josh and Benny Safdie’s 2014 film Heaven Knows What, he became convinced he had to work with the two indie filmmakers.

“He reached out and wrote some mystical and maniacal email saying it was connected to his purpose and that he felt some connection to us and that he wanted to be involved in whatever we’re making next,” says Josh Safdie in a recent conference call with his brother Benny. “He wasn’t right for this Diamond District movie that we’re doing at the top of the year, but I have this life-long interest in reading about and watching movies about and hanging out with the American criminal.”

Knowing that Pattinson was willing to do “anything” to be in one of his films, Josh began creating a character for Pattinson, a model, actor and musician.

“At the time, I was reading Executioner’s Song for the first time and the Jack Abbott book In the Belly of the Beast,” says Josh Safdie. “At the same time, I was reading and talking to [actor] Buddy Duress and his prison journals were very informative as well. There was this general idea to

make this kind of movie. When Robert reached out, we knew we could tap into a much larger audience than normal and make a piece of termite art and a piece of pulp that at first feels disposable but then you realize there are all these nutrients there. In the tradition of genre movies, we wanted to do something that felt propulsive and was entertaining. We wanted to make a popcorn flick that was also a reflection of society.”

Josh Safdie would first write an extensive background for small-time crook Connie Nickas, a character that Pattison could play. He then constructed a screenplay based on that background story. The resulting thriller, Good Time, opens areawide on Friday.

In the film, Connie decides to rob a bank with his mentally challenged brother Nick (Benny Safdie). The heist goes awry, Nick ends up in jail and Connie takes desperate measures to try to free Nick, even teaming up with Ray (Duress), another small-time crook who’s just gotten out of jail. The film’s realistic portrayal of the heist separates it from other genre films.

“Crime is so sensationalized but most of the stories are low end,” says Josh Safdie. “They’re usually not spectacular. The landmarks are usually subway sandwich shops or playgrounds or one–bedroom apartments that someone was hiding out in. Movies have fooled people into thinking that crime is so romantic and explosive and grandiose. It can be, but

SPOTLIGHT: THE ONLY LIVING BOY IN NEW YORK ORIGINALLY, DIRECTOR MARC Webb cast Miles Teller to play Thomas Webb, the protagonist in his new drama The Only Living Boy in New York. When Teller dropped out, Webb went with Callum Turner. Not sure that Teller would have made the film any better, but he likely would’ve portrayed Thomas with a bit more finesse. As played by Turner, Thomas comes off as incredibly brash and ultimately unlikeable in this mediocre movie. The film opens areawide on Friday.

The film commences with a voiceover that comes courtesy of W.F. Gerald, a writer of some magnitude, who, we soon learn has moved into Thomas’ shabby apartment building to find inspiration for his next novel. W.F. instantly befriends Thomas, though Thomas at first

doesn’t know he’s an author. Thomas quickly begins confiding in W.F. and tells him about his unrequited relationship with Mimi (Kiersey Clemons). W.F. gives him some fatherly advice.

Complications arise, however, when Thomas discovers his father (Pierce Brosnan) has been having an affair with Johanna (Kate Beckinsale), an associate his publishing company. Things become even more complicated when Thomas confronts Johanna. She suggests they get lunch so she can properly explain things to the “innocent” young boy. Their lunch somehow leads to sex and Johanna soon finds herself caught between Thomas and his father. All the while, W.F. teases Thomas for having “visions of Johanna.”

While it’s certainly within the realm of possibility that Thomas and Johanna would have a relationship, the movie doesn’t make it seem believable. It doesn’t help that Turner and Beckinsale have zero chemistry or that Beckinsale’s character is so loosely formed. But the unlikely relationship between Thomas and Johanna represents just one of the film’s many flaws. A poorly written script and the movie’s surprise ending both work against it as well.

A good inde drama would provide some reprieve from overblown summer blockbusters. Too bad The Only Living Boy in New York is such a dud. — Jeff Niesel

Benny Safdie says he and his brother sought to “tap into that realism and use the work we’ve been doing in our other films and take that to the genre element and see if we could fuse the two.”

To his credit, pretty boy Pattinson goes all in.

“He gave us a full commitment,” says Josh Safdie. “When he first sat down with us and said he wanted to do whatever it takes, I told him to read Executioner’s Song, which is a 900page book. I sent him this extensive character background, which is very long in its own right and isn’t even the script. He worked with that and gave us months and months of time and would come could come sporadically to get lost in the criminal world and meet characters that Connie might hang out with or be inspired by.”

The two directors describe the film’s characters as people who “live in the present” as they try to outrun the law.

The irony of the situation isn’t lost on them.

“These criminals affront the idea of time,” says Benny Safdie. “I can’t even count how many times they say, ‘I don’t care.’ They don’t think in that realm.

What’s so funny and strange is that time becomes hyper-realistic. When you’re on the run, it’s your demise. You can run away as much as you can, but in the end, it will always catch up. You live in the no,w and it extenuates the time and makes it more present.

“The film’s triumph is that we have this electronic, propulsive, rhythmic score that dies down as the story of Connie fades away,” says Benny Safdie.

“The second it leaves, you have this beautiful track that [composer] Daniel [Lopatin] wrote that Iggy Pop wrote lyrics over. It’s a perfect way to end the film. It says the world isn’t such a fast moving place all the time, and maybe these are the people who really matter.

The lyrics are so beautiful because Dan could see the movie through the duality of Connie and Nick’s perspective. That speaks to his artistry.

He really is the king of termite art.”

By Douglas Trattner IF YOU TURN DOWN TINY BLATT Court off West 25th Street, just south of Clark Avenue, you might catch sight of a colorful sign that reads “Limber.” The hand-lettered plaque sits on a pair of sawhorses, which are positioned on a postage stamp-size front lawn just outside a residence. Climb the porch steps, knock on the door, and you can order a variety of refreshing homemade limbers, Puerto Ricanstyle frozen ices that come in tropical flavors like passion fruit, guava and pineapple.

This makeshift walk-up dessert shop is just one of many Latinoowned food ventures in the ClarkFulton neighborhood that skirt conventional business practices.

On certain days of the week, the “Tamale Lady” works her way up and down Clark Avenue with her insulated cooler filled with warm banana leaf-wrapped tamales and plump, steamy gorditas. Other scrappy entrepreneurs accept orders for homemade empanadas, arepas or pan de queso.

“There is this shadow economy when it comes to home-based businesses,” says Jenice Contreras, executive director of the Hispanic Business Center. “In a lot of Latino countries, if you want to start a business you just do it. But here, it’s way more complicated.”

Low-profile businesses in the area include basement hail salons, backyard daycare centers, and garage auto mechanics. But as useful as those outfits are to local residents, none of them provide a sense of comfort and joy like homecooked foods from the homeland.

“A lot of us who leave the island [of Puerto Rico] don’t have the opportunity to go back,” explains home-based cook Haguit Marrero with the help of an interpreter. “My

goal is to provide that taste of Puerto Rico here. Food that takes you home.”

Marrero has been in Ohio for a little more than a year but already she has amassed a robust client roster that includes local businesses as well as nostalgic neighbors.

She posts weekly menus to her Instagram account, where images of mofongo with chicharrones, verduras con bacalao, flan and other “muy típico” dishes attract hungry immigrants pining for an authentic taste of home.

The near-west side of Cleveland is home to 22,000 Latinos, with the largest concentration living in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood. Many of these residents were driven in from nearby neighborhoods like Ohio City, Tremont and Detroit Shoreway at the hands of gentrification. Others make their way to Cleveland from Puerto Rico, via Florida, to be reunited with extended family. What they find when they arrive, at least in terms of food, is woefully inadequate, notes Contreras.

“There is a void in the ClarkFulton neighborhood of ethnically appropriate anything,” she says. “We don’t have a grocery store where you can go and get your plantains or your cilantro, and that is a big barrier for our residents, 30 percent of which don’t drive. We recognize the contributions that these food-based businesses make, both financially for their own families as well as providing ethnically authentic foods of cultural relevance.”

Hispana, an ambitious multifaceted development that hopes to create a cultural, social and economic hub for the Latino community, efforts are underway to increase the number of legitimate, Latin-owned food businesses in immediate area and beyond.

“What we’re trying to do with the redevelopment in the Clark-Fulton neighborhood is to increase activity and business, but we want to keep in mind the people who live here today and make them an integral part of that redevelopment,” adds Contreras.

A core component of the La Villa Hispana initiative is El Mercado, a 32,000-square-foot complex that will house a cultural arts center, neighborhood nonprofits and an

open-air plaza. It also will be home to an anchor restaurant, fresh produce market, and roughly two dozen microbusinesses that hope to join the ranks of other sanctioned businesses in the area.

“What we try to do is help guide them through that process; try to educate them about liability, about reporting income, and help them on their entrepreneurial path so they can grow,” Contreras explains.

She points to Jose Melendez, a local success story who progressed from a home-based food business to a catering outfit to La Posada, an improvised eatery operating out of a local church. The folks at the Hispanic Business Center are in the process of trying to find him restaurant space in the neighborhood.

I’m standing in the living room of Jose Teca, a local hip-hop artist who grew up eating his mother’s arepas and empanadas. He watched, too, as complete strangers would come to his home to purchase large orders of her authentic Colombian food.

Before long, the pair was in business together, turning out delicious and authentic items for sale throughout the community.

“We hope to go from this to a food truck to maybe even a brickand-mortar spot,” he says. “I want to start something for my nephew and niece to have when they get older, if they want it. But we want to keep it authentic: straight-up Colombian food.”

IT’S SATURDAY AFTERNOON IN Tremont and lunch is winding down at St. Augustine Hunger Center. Volunteers wipe down the tables and pack up the leftovers. A few regulars linger at a table and talk about family and faith. When asked how the food was today, they nod their approval. “The salad was good,” one offers. “And the soup.”

Today’s soup was a corn chowder with tomatoes, potatoes and jalapenos, with some cilantro and cumin tossed in for good measure.

It wasn’t the bland fare you might expect from a mass-produced meal for the homeless and food-insecure in a major city. It’s comfort food with flavor.

The architect of this meal is bustling through the dining area and kitchen, making sure to introduce me to all the volunteers by name and tell me what role they played in preparing the meal. She teases me about showing up too late to volunteer. “You just didn’t want to wear a hairnet, did you?”

Mary Ellen Rhein is not a Cleveland celebrity chef – or even an up-and-coming one – but she’s cooked up and served hundreds of meals. She and the rest of the Single Volunteers of Ohio (SVO), of which she is the president, cook at the Hunger Center the second and last Saturday of every month.

“A lot of the time, donations are leftovers or close to its expiration date,” says Rhein. SVO’s goal is to provide them with “at least one meal a month made especially for them.”

St. Augustine Hunger Center is one of many nonprofits that SVO partners with (domestic violence centers, food banks and the Ronald McDonald House are just a few of the others in the rotation), but it’s Rhein’s favorite project.

“I like to cook,” she says. “I like to be creative.” And she has to be creative given the random nature of what supplies will land in the Hunger Center’s food pantry (she jokingly compares the unpredictability of the task to the Food Network’s Chopped) and SVO’s limited budget; she has to stretch her biweekly meals to feed up to 150

people.

Food has always been a big part of her family. In Pittsburgh, where she grew up, her mother ran a business baking cookies for weddings. But cooking, on a volunteer basis or otherwise, was not an obvious path for Rhein. “If you talk to people I went to high school with they’d tell you I could burn Jell-O,” she says.

When she moved from Pittsburgh to Northeast Ohio for a job teaching special education, someone gave Rhein a Betty Crocker cookbook.

It became a bible for Rhein, part of what she calls her “own little study” on cooking with cookbooks and TV shows.

It was divorce that led Rhein to volunteering. “The kids go off with the ex, and it’s hard,” she admits. A friend recommended she volunteer to fill the time. Rhein found SVO, and St. Augustine was the first activity she came to.

In the 15 years since, she’s become something like the organization’s resident chef, though she laughs when I suggest that title.

“I like to boss people around,” she says. “I think it’s the teacher thing that kicks in.”

Volunteering is not without its benefits. “I’ve done things and met people I never would’ve met,” says Rhein. Among those people are Cleveland Browns and Indians players, and families from around the world through the Ronald McDonald House.

Growing up, says Rhein, her parents were always helping people, whether it was neighbors, family or friends. When I suggest that so much of her work in life – special education, volunteering – has been about the same, she blushes. “I guess that’s what I like to do.”

By Douglas Trattner WHEN THE FISH SHACK AND Grill packed up and moved across the street to a larger spot, its former home was quickly snatched up by a Dominican restaurant called La Morenita (3156 W. 25th St., 216-3506633). The cheery little eatery, which has been open for about a month, serves breakfast, lunch and early dinner.

A full Dominican breakfast is no joke. Called “Los Tres Golpes” – or the three hits – the plate always contains fried eggs, fried cheese, fried salami and mangú. Like Puerto Rican mofongu, mangú is made from plantains and are a staple of the cuisine. But unlike mofongo, which is boiled, mashed and fried plantains, mangú is boiled, mashed and seasoned with olive oil. It is traditionally garnished with pickled red onion.

A quick-serve heated display is filled with golden brown empandillas ($2.50) filled with ground beef, chicken or cheese, and tostones (8/$3.50), crunchy, creamy and saltgilded fried plantains. La Morenita also dishes up the sweet variety of plantains (6/$3.50), platanos maduros, which come deeply caramelized and buttery soft.

Larger plates, which come with rice and beans, are built around roasted pork ($11), beef stew ($10), roasted chicken ($10) and whole fried fish ($17).

Flavorful, hearty soups like chicken ($10) and seafood ($12.50), both served with a side of rice, join even more substantial stews like mondongo

($11) and sancocho ($11). Mondongo, available only on Saturdays, is a rich tripe stew with tomato, carrots and potatoes, while the sancocho, available only on Sundays, is a celebratory dish filled with various meats and root vegetables.

To drink, there are shakes made from passion fruit and the eminently refreshing Morir Soñando ($4), a sweet, citrusy mix of orange juice, whole milk, ice and sugar.

restaurants all over town, including Osteria, Mia Bella, Presti’s Bakery and Vero.

“But the summer’s too short and the year is too long, so now we are doing a restaurant,” Egozcue says with a laugh.

Last week, he and his wife Lilliana opened Molto Bene (18401 Detroit Ave., 216-273-7333), a casual Italian eatery in Lakewood.

The attractive, easygoing 30-seat restaurant offers a nice mix of classic starters, pizzas, pastas and entrees. Ripe melon is wrapped in prosciutto di Parma; crostini is topped with salmon and mascarpone; cauliflower is baked with herbs and olive oil. Rectangular pizzas are topped with plum tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and Italian salami, or mozzarella, prosciutto and arugula.

Pastas, priced between $14 and $17, include meat and meat-free versions of lasagna, penne with shrimp in a garlic-scented wine sauce, gnocchi with Bolognese, and spaghetti with Little Neck clams, garlic and white wine. Mains, which are in the $15 to $18 range (and include salad or a side of pasta), include grilled eggplant parmesan, veal scaloppine and a seafood stew flush with clams, shrimp, mussels, scallops and fish in an herbed tomato and wine broth.

For dessert, naturally, there are 16 flavors of gelato and sorbet to choose from for enjoyment in the dining room or for carry-out.

So far, the team has been doing it all without their chef, but that changes this week when Vincenzo Piadza arrives from Luca, Italy to take over in the kitchen. Also, Molto Bene operates without a beer or wine license, but that should change down the road. Neither the absence of a chef nor liquor license appears to have hindered the bistro’s opening week business. In fact, says the owner, things literally are going molto bene.

“Very well,” he says. “We have been

very busy. Maybe because of the area, the food or what, but it’s been very nice. We are very happy, more than what I expected.”

Molto Bene is open for dinner only Tuesday through Sunday.

NOW OPEN: CRUST PIZZA KITCHEN IN TREMONT The new Crust Pizza Kitchen (2258 Professor Ave., 216-583-0257) quietly opened its doors for service last week.

Located on the ground floor of the former Komorowski Funeral Home building in the heart of Tremont, the popular pizza, pasta and sub shop debuted with an expanded menu, a full liquor license and a footprint that almost quadruples that of the original spot on Kenilworth.

New appetizers include mozzarella balls wrapped in housemade dough, deep fried and served with marinara.

Another version is stuffed with mozz and pepperoni. There’s also a burrata antipasto paired with Italian meats and marinated veggies.

Pizza fans can still grab a slice, design their own pie or order one of nearly a dozen specialty pies.

Crust has always gone above and beyond the call of duty in the desserts department, but things can only improve now that Ange Lupica, formerly with Lola Bistro, has joined the Crust team.

“I’m really excited about it,” says Crust owner Mike Griffin. “She’ll be doing the desserts for the downtown location, Tremont and the bookstore when it opens.”

That bookstore is Visible Voice Books, which will reopen this September in the attractive 1,800-square-foot upper level.

Both Crust and Visible Voice benefit from a large back patio and 26-car parking lot.

MUSIC FAST AND FURIOUS A Warped Tour appearance helped confirm frontman Mike Peters’ new vision for The Alarm

By Matt Wardlaw WHEN WE LAST SPOKE WITH Mike Peters, he was on a series of tours that found him in one-man band mode, surrounded by an expansive collection of instruments, including drums that he could play with his feet, and an acoustic that could go electric with a quick flick of a switch, alternating between several microphones scattered across the stage, singing into each one and connecting with the audience from different angles.

As Peters explained at that time, his chosen method of performance, paired with a bit of theater of the mind, allowed for fans to reach back in time. He described the show as one that “rocks like mad as well when it gets to the end and it’s like the whole band is playing.”

Fans will finally see that whole band playing for the first time in many years here in the States. Peters and the members of the Alarm — featuring a three-piece version of the current lineup with guitarist James Stevenson (moonlighting on bass for the current tour in place of regular bassist Craig Adams) and drummer Steve “Smiley” Barnard — are knocking down a heavy load of more than 40 dates spread across two months. They just wrapped up a month-long stint playing shows on the Vans Warped Tour, which the Welsh singer-songwriter says was a “fantastic” experience. The group will perform at the Music Box Supper Club on Sunday.

“We played a fast and furious Alarm set. It’s really helped to raise our profile and keep the contemporary vision that I have for the band reaffirmed,” he shares via phone as the group was en route to Seattle for a headlining date, the morning after the annual package tour wrapped up. “To play Vans

Warped Tour sends a great message out. We’ve tried our best to not just get railroaded into being an ‘80s band and do those kind of ‘80s package tours. You know, they’re great for what they are, but we’ve just tried to focus on things that keep the modern vision of the band protected and in line with the vision we have for the group in 2017.”

Even with only 25 minutes of stage time, Peters and the band barreled through nearly a dozen songs, some condensed, to deliver a rapid-fire overview of both the past and the present for the group.

Along the way, he found plenty of musicians on the tour who were fans of his group. Even members of GWAR acknowledged their affinity for the Alarm.

“My kids like them. I’ve got my two boys, 10 and 13 [on the road], and they thought GWAR were great,” says Peters. “I took them to see them play a few times, because they were the one band on the Warped tour that actually got a set time and they were the last band on. Obviously, to go on in those kind of costumes that they wear, you couldn’t survive in the heat in the desert areas and the California sunshine, so they got to go on late when it was a bit cooler. At the end of the night, I’d take the boys down and they and go and watch

them play and they wanted to get in the circle pits and the mosh pits and all of that stuff and got a bit wet from all of that. It was great.”

Man in the Camo Jacket, a new documentary film, offers an engaging in-depth look at Peters’ career to date and the challenges that he’s faced — including living with cancer for the past two decades.

He admits that the filmmakers had a big task, tackling his story.

“You’re telling not just the story of my cancer survival, but the story of the band and everything in between and the vision that we’ve tried to stick to and to see it through, to be in a band that’s a long way away in time from the moment it was born,” he says. “It’s a real odyssey of a journey through a life with massive incidents that I could never have predicted. When I wanted to join a band and sign up for rock and roll, I never saw cancer come in, I never saw [Mount] Everest in the distance, I saw a life of being on stage, and I didn’t see that I’d have to rebuild friendships that were torn apart through conflicts in rock ‘n’ roll or because of life impacting others in certain ways that we were too young to deal with. To see it all crammed into an 84-minute film, it’s quite a rollercoaster.”

And Peters refused to board

that rollercoaster until the film was finished — in typical fashion, he saw it for the first time with two thousand diehard fans of the band that had assembled at the Millennium Centre in Wales to see the debut screening.

“It was quite a ride to see it all up there. It’s really well-portrayed and tells the story like it is, pretty much,” he says. “The toughest part for me was contending with my nine year old at the time, who turned around to me and said to me during the film, with fans all around me, ‘So you and Mom didn’t have sex to have me as a kid?’ Try to explain that to a 9-year-old amongst all of your fans! That’s a bigger challenge than living with cancer and playing rock ‘n’ roll.”

The documentary also offers a preview of the band’s next musical chapter, thanks to the inclusion of a new song, “Coming Backwards,” which appears on the soundtrack and plays in the closing moments of the film. “We’ve got a whole new project that we’re slowly unveiling that will be fully revealed in 2018. It’s called Blood Red Viral Black,” Peters explains. “The thought process was a series of songs that looked inward and were describing what was happening in my life and family life as the relapse unfolded.” | clevescene.com | August 23 - 29, 2017

Peters says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think that â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Coming Backwardsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; is a reference that every time life brings us full circle, we meet people coming backwards on the same part of the road and it was really trying to express an internal feeling and the frustration that I have been ďŹ ghting this battle a long time, the same battle over and over and over again, until we meet ourselves coming backwards. You know, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like, coming out of the hospital, I then meet my wife going into it to have breast cancer surgery and radiotherapy treatments. So it was really in response to that.â&#x20AC;?

The project is divided into two sections, with the second half taking stock of â&#x20AC;&#x153;the life implications,â&#x20AC;? according to Peters. The Viral Black section looks out on the world and sees it changing so much with the dominance of the iPhone, with the new presidential incumbent in the White House, with Brexit in Britain. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re living in a very unstable world,â&#x20AC;? says Peters. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As someone who has to face the future living with cancer and having two children, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve poured a lot of what I feel of that world into the new music. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been ďŹ nishing our concerts [on this current tour] with a brand new song called â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Two Rivers,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; which people

on it,â&#x20AC;? Peters says of â&#x20AC;&#x153;Two Rivers.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s exciting to be playing it and thinking about what could come for the band next year when we release the album proper into the United States. We included it in the ďŹ lm as a taste of things to come.â&#x20AC;?

Talking with Peters, it quickly becomes clear that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s grateful for every moment. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s taken his own struggles and channeled them into working to do good things for others who might be facing a similar situation, co-founding the Love Hope Strength Foundation in 2003. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our mission is to save lives, one concert at a time,â&#x20AC;? the groupâ&#x20AC;şs mission statement says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We believe that all people deserve quality cancer care, a marrow donor if needed, and most importantly, hope. Founded by cancer survivors, LHS leverages the power of music to expand the marrow registry through our â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Get on the Listâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; campaign. We believe in offering real hope to people currently living with cancer.

As the closing credits of Man In the Camo Jacket reveal, their stated purpose has been very successful and continues to grow.

The organization has enlisted over 150 thousand people to become part of the international bone marrow registry, and roughly 3,000 potential life-saving matches have been found.

Additional events have raised over three million dollars to date.

He says if the band hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t broken up in 1991 and resurfaced in 2000, it wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the story that it has to tell today. He thinks that he and his band mates should give thanks for the â&#x20AC;&#x153;blessingsâ&#x20AC;? that have been bestowed on it, even though they might not seem like they were blessings. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They might have seemed like they were negatives, but by keeping faith in the love hope and strength thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always run through our

THE POWER AND THE PASSION Recharged by recent events, Midnight Oil brings its first tour in 15 years to town

By Jeff Niesel GUITARIST JIM MOGINIE AND drummer Rob Hirst, both of whom played together in an Australian band that would eventually morph into Midnight Oil, found 6-foot 4-inch Australian National University student Peter Garrett by placing an ad for a lead singer. Looking to add “charisma” to the group, Moginie knew they had something special when Garrett auditioned way back in 1976.

“Peter came and looked at us suspiciously like ‘Who are these guys?’” recalls Moginie during a phone call from Spain, where he was vacationing. Midnight Oil began touring again this year after a 15-year hiatus. The band performs at House of Blues on Sunday, Aug. 27. “He came and sang and I think we did ‘Locomotive Breath’ by Jethro Tull and then a free form rant that used various Australian slang terms. We looked at each and said, ‘Let’s do it.’ It was as simple as that. That’s how he got the gig. I don’t think he had a car, but he had a PA.” The band hit the Aussie pub circuit and issued its self-titled debut in 1978.

The group’s big breakthrough came with 1982’s 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Hard driving singles such as the Clash-like “Power and the Passion” and “Read About It” suggested the band’s

political sensibilities that would later come to fruition.

“It’s got a special place in my heart,” Moginie says about the album, which the band recorded in London.

“We grew up in the pubs and clubs in Australia. We were making punk rock thrash records that were kind of brutal. The radio didn’t touch them, not that that was our priority. But as anyone in a band can tell you, it’s a lot easier if you have some support behind you.”

The group went to a studio in a London townhouse and recorded with Nick Launay, who had worked with XTC and Peter Gabriel.

“He was young — I think he was 22 — and full of ideas,” says Moginie.

In 1986, the band spent several months in touring the Australian Outback and playing to remote Aboriginal communities where many of the native people lived in extreme poverty. That experience would inspired the songs on 1987’s Diesel and Dust, an album that focused on whiate Australia’s need to come to terms with the treatment of Australia’s indigenous people “We did music that had a message and was wrapped up with a good beat,” says Moginie when asked about the album’s widespread appeal.

“We wanted to say things but to say them we had both things happening.

That’s what makes a great band. We had a profound experience when you discover your country. We wanted to put down what we’d seen. It was pretty simple. We were surprised it was taken on board by countries across the world.

I think the artwork had something to do with it as well. What happened here

was an invasion, and they were killed and driven out and no one wanted to talk about it. We wanted to recognize what happened. It’s not in the history books, all the things that happened.

It’s a ‘we forget’ type of thing.”

The band began the current the Great Circle 2017 World Tour in a small Sydney club. Since launching the tour, it’s played five dates in Brazil, where it also appeared aboard Greenpeace’s the Rainbow Warrior.

With the release of three new box sets — Complete Vinyl Collection (all the studio LPs and EPs), Full Tank (all the CDs and music videos) and Overflow Tank — the band has plenty of product to promote on the jaunt.

But the group’s motive for reforming is hardly financial.

“A lot of our contemporaries had died and couldn’t tour so we thought, ‘Why not?’” says Moginie. “The songs seem to have more resonance now than ever. That’s not lost on people and that’s not lost on us either. We didn’t know until we got into the rehearsal room, and we kicked some songs around, and then we sounded fresh as a daisy. We wanted to give it a go.”

MUSIC AN INFUSION OF YOUTH Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen comes to town with a new young band

By Jeff Niesel WHEN SINGER-KEYBOARDIST Donald Fagen and singer-guitarist Walter Becker, the guys in the jazz/ rock act Steely Dan, toured back in the 1970s shortly after the band’s inception, they quickly developed an aversion to touring and rarely hit the road prior to disbanding in 1981. Since reforming in 1993, however, they’ve toured with more regularity.

The band performed just two summers ago at Blossom and now Fagen brings his solo show to town. He and his backing band, the Nightflyers, will perform on Friday at Hard Rock Live.

“When we got off the road after touring for a couple of years – I think it was in ’74, and it really had to do with the conditions back then for touring, which were much more difficult,” he says during a recent conference call when asked about his newfound love for performing live.

Some of the issues stemmed from the types of bands that Steely Dan played with.

“We were opening for a lot of heavy metal bands, so often we didn’t get the kind of soundcheck we wanted,” Fagen says. “The sound equipment back then was not quite what it is today. So we decided we’d rather be in the studio making records. But when we got back together about ’93, it was a lot of fun. And we’ve been touring since then, mostly in the summertime or spring. And it’s great playing for people, and it’s certainly a lot — although touring is not the easiest thing in the world, it’s a lot easier than all that stress in the studio.”

A quintet of young musicians that Fagen met near his Woodstock home, the Nightflyers include singerguitarist Connor Kennedy, singerdrummer Lee Falco, singer-bassist Brandon Morrison, singer-keyboardist Will Bryant and singer-saxophonist Zach Djanikian.

“I’ve been living up in the Woodstock area for a long time, and my stepdaughter, Amy Helm, also lives there,” says Fagen when asked about how he assembled the band. “I used to take part in her dad’s ‘midnight rambles’ over at Levon Helm’s barn.

And so I got to know a lot of the musicians up here, and I think that I first saw these guys over at the

annual Bob Dylan’s birthday concert, and I remember seeing them do some Dylan material, and I was just really impressed with what a great band they were. So when I wanted speak to them on a different kind of material, some solo material and so on, they were just there. And they’re really good.”

The band name stems from The Nightfly, the solo album that Fagen issued some 35 years ago. It yielded the hits, “New Frontier,” a tune that features a prominent jazz guitar riff, woozy horns and Fagen’s typically laconic vocals, and the swinging “I.G.Y.” “I think my solo albums attempt to be more personal, maybe, and where in contrast with the Steely Dan material in which [guitarist] Walter [Becker] and I were perhaps more journalistic

“It was really funny, because they’d never been played live ever,” he says.

“And I think that month or two is the only time I’ve ever actually played them live. There may have been a few we played Steely Dan. I remember playing ‘New Frontier’ at a Steely Dan show once or twice. So they’re really new to me, because these guys actually have taught me the chords to a few that I completely forgot.”

Fagen, 69, says he’s enjoyed playing with guys who are some 40 years younger than him.

in some ways, that is to return and telling stories about stuff we – commenting on things and so on,” he says. “That happens with my solo stuff too, but generally speaking, I think, they’re more autobiographical.”

Fagen says the only time he ever played the songs from The

Stones’ “Beast of Burden.” Fagen says fans can expect the same approach at his Hard Rock Live show.

“I love doing covers,” he says. “I did some shows recently, maybe a couple of years ago, with the band, Dukes of September with Boz Scaggs and Mike McDonald. And that was all about

covers, you know, the kind of music that got us into the music business – Motown and Beach Boys and whatever, so I really enjoy doing that kind of thing.”

The Nightflyers, who’ll likely perform a slew of Steely Dan songs with Fagen, draw from the same jazz well that inspired Fagen back in the ’70s.

“I started as a jazz band,” he says “I listened to a lot of bebop and hard bop.

But I also like sort of modern classical music like Stravinsky and that sort of thing. Well, also jazz going back to the ’30s like Duke Ellington and so on.

And then I do like music from R&B from the ’50s and ’60s.”

“I was amazed that it worked back in the ’70s, you know, we certainly weren’t part of the mainstream of popular music then either, or at least as the first few albums that developed,” Fagen says. “So yeah, I’m still amazed that they set us up on the radio and that we acquired so many fans. I really can’t make a living from recording anymore. I don’t think any of the solo albums, the last three anyway, recouped their budgets. But luckily, I’m really into playing live, and that’s how musicians make a living these days.”

Buffalo Jazz Octet: Like Cleveland, in some ways, Buffalo has an extraordinary jazz heritage. The titans of American jazz all passed through our Rust Belt cousin, especially in the 1970s. The Colored Musicians Club still stands in downtown Buffalo, where black musicians unionized in the early 20th century to make their own way in the city’s discriminatory music scene. (This happened in many major cities.) Now, the Buffalo Jazz Octet carries a tradition of groundbreaking instrumentation forward. We’ve been keeping an eye on them, and it’s exciting to have them in Cleveland tonight. Not long ago, JazzBuffalo called their show “spellbinding,” and we’re looking forward to that sort of spirit at the Bop Stop. (Eric Sandy), 7 p.m., $12.

Logic/Joey Bada$$: Fresh off his chart-topping Billboard album, Everybody, Logic hits Jacobs Pavillion alongside fellow east coast rapper Joey Bada$$ tonight. The duo has a complementary fanbase; Logic’s forceful, occasionally scattered reflections on identity and social issues are at the forefront of his recent music, and New York native Bada$$ has made a name for his young self as a sharp-tongued skeptic since his first mixtape, 2012’s phenomenal 1999. Bada$$ barrelled into 2017 with the charged “Land of the Free,” fiery political bars over an incongruously cheery interpolation of Biggie’s “Juicy” released on inauguration day. His album, All-Amerikkkan Bada$$, brings more of the same, tempered by the spacious, communal single “Devastated.” Standing as an implied alternative to today’s Soundcloud rap, expect a conscious, youthful crowd to be rocking along to these youngsters on west bank of the Flats. Jamaican Queens/Times 10/Nothing Major: Longtime regulars at Mahall’s, Jamaican Queens spin through again tonight. They’re still working their 2015 album, Downers, which covers a hell of a ground of danceable ground, like their earlier stuff. Single “Bored + Lazy” is a slacker rave in slow-motion, and tunes like “Don’t Call Me Up” kick up the tempo and the inventive percussion in fresh ways. By Jeff Niesel MEET THE BAND: Joe Tomino (drums), Mike Sopko (guitars) JUST THE TWO OF THEM: Tomino used to play in the avant garde jazz act birth and in the indie rock the Champion Bubblers in the late ’90s before moving to New York for 15 years. A founding member of the bands such as Sopko/Laswell/Pridgen, Glimpse Trio and Golden Measure, Sopko has played with underground musicians such as Bill Laswell, Mike Watt, Dosh, Thomas Pridgen, Tyshawn Sorey, Simon Lott and Jamie Saft. “We both grew up in Cleveland and then moved apart,” says Tomino. “We hooked up when Mike moved back in 2015. He came to a show I was playing and introduced himself. We started doing improvised jazz gigs as a duo.”

MEDITATIVE SOUNDS: Tomino says he had a concept for a band that was loosely based on meditation and breath, and he and Sopko decided to give it a go. “There was no music written at first,” he says. “We got together and played as slow as we could and as loud as we could. At the same time, we were practicing a lot of yoga. That’s a big part of it and part of the foundation of the band. After we got together the first or second time, Mike wrote some music and we started hashing out some forms.”

They wrote the songs for their selftitled debut in the winter of 2015 and recorded in Tomino’s basement. “We did it all ourselves,” says Tomino.

“I did the drums in one recording, and we overdubbed multiple guitars.

WHY YOU SHOULD HEAR THEM: The band’s self-titled debut has an epic metal feel to it. As the band puts it on its Bandcamp page, where you can stream several tracks and download the music, it’s a blend of “devastatingly heavy, painstakingly slow and joyful noise.” “A Punishing Hit” features Sabbath-inspired sludge-y guitars; it’s a song you’ll want to turn up louder. The nuanced “Old Faithful,” however, features a slow intro before the heavy guitars kick in. “It’s an instrumental album, but we wanted it to have some depth with the tone and velocity,” says Tomino. “Sunn O))) was kind of an influence. The songs have a punk aesthetic, but they’re so deliberate, it takes a certain mindset to listen to the record.” The release party at the Beachland will celebrate the album’s digital release. The group plans to get on the road and play a few shows out of town and then write another album.

C-NOTES GUITAR HERO Local guitarist Doug Wood releases new solo album

By Jeff Niesel ONE OF OUR FAIR CITY’S FINEST guitarists, Doug Wood cites bands such as the Who, King Crimson, Michael Hedges, Pat Metheny and Bela Fleck & the Flecktones as influences.

A John Carroll University graduate, he formed the acoustic group Watts Gnu in 1989. After that band broke up, Wood has worked as a solo artist.

He’s announced a few live dates in the wake of the release of his latest album, The Road Home. Recorded and engineered by the James Gang’s Dale Peters, the album features bassist Darren Frate and cellist Tara Hanish.

“Dale has worked with me since my Watts Gnu days,” Wood explains.

“We released that one Watts Gnu album way back when and over the course of the years, I’ve developed a good friendship with him and enjoy working with him. You can throw things at him, and it doesn’t through for a loop. It’s nice to work someone like that. He has a good musical intelligence too. He’ll coach me through either using or not using a part. He doesn’t make me feel nervous in the studio. He would make a good life coach.”

The disc features original compositions, and many of the instrumentals have common theme.

“I go to Colorado a lot on tour, and many of the tunes are inspired by my travels out west,” says Wood.

“It’s about me coming back home, but it’s also about being on the road.

The emotions are about finding home where I go. Even ‘Isabelle Dances’ was written on the road. It’s about my daughter, who’s now in her double digits. It’s about the emotion that

Wood brings his touring show, Guys with Guitars, to the Bop Stop on Thursday. The band will also perform on Friday and Saturday at the Stocker Arts Center in Elyria, and on Sunday at Lakeside Chitaqua in Lakeside.

That band models its approach after the former Windham Hill Concerts format that featured several touring solo artists performing their own solo material and collaborating with each other on songs.

“Over the course of the many years I’ve been doing this, I like playing solo, but I like the excitement of playing with other musicians,” Wood says.

“Darren [Frate] plays bass on the CD, and I can play some of the stuff he plays bass on. [Guitarist] Patrick Woods is a great musician. I just really

like the excitement of a Guys With Guitars show.”

WRECKING CREW RED PANDA BEARS RELEASE NEW MUSIC VIDEO Local rockers Wrecking Crew Red Panda Bears formed some two years ago and issued an EP last summer.

Now, the band has just issued a new single, the power ballad “Young Medusa.”

The group filmed the accompanying music video in Lorain in the woods close to Lorain Port Authority.

“We found a really nice path and thought it would be a cool idea to have Young Medusa wandering this path,” says band leader Mando Guitarrista.

“The video was shot by Bret Vance owner of HighArt LLC in Cleveland; he shot our last video for ‘I Cannot Lose.’ The concept of the video is

A Canton native, writer Johnny Ray Miller followed the Partridge Family television program and the group’s recorded music from the very beginning. A concert and theater producer, actor and director, Miller also has worked on Desperate Housewives, Rules of Engagement, Kings of Queens, CSI: New York, E.R., Cold Case, Without a Trace, The O.C. and others.

He also just published his first book, When We’re Singin’. It chronicles the Partridge Family from its inception through the final season and features more than 100 interviews. It’s reportedly the first biography of the Partridge Family to treat the group as a legitimate band.

On Tuesday night at 7 at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archives, Miller will read from and sign the book. Admission is free with a reservation.
