MORE THAN A DECADE INTO a prison stay for a crime he says he didn’t commit, Ru-El Sailor may finally have a sturdy foundation for hope. As we detailed in a cover story earlier this year, the 30-year-old Clevelander is serving a 28-years-to-life sentence for a 2002 street killing, a flash of violence tied more to bad decisions than the street beefs and gang violence precipitating most of the dropped bodies in Cleveland’s East Side. Sailor’s own involvement seems mostly rooted in misplaced loyalties — he wasn’t even there, he claims. But as the situation stands now, Sailor is at a legal logjam, his escape routes out of his conviction limited.

But some new developments since our piece was published — including two new affidavits filed in the case — could be game-changers.

“For the first time, and in a more serious way than ever before, there is momentum behind this case,” Sailor’s lawyer, Kimberly Corral, told Scene recently.

In November 2002, Sailor and his buddies spent a night out drinking in bars and clubs on the East Side.

Across town, Nicole Hubbard and a group of her friends were drinking and smoking wet — a PCP laced cigarette. At some point, Nicole got into a fight with a man named Clark Lamar over $10. In the dispute, she called her brother, Sailor’s best friend Cordell Hubbard. He and another man confronted the other guy hours later. Threats were tossed around. A gun came out. When it was over, Omar Clark was dead.

Cuyahoga County prosecutors originally said Ru-El Sailor was the second man on the scene of the shooting. Both Nicole and Cordell Hubbard were tried and convicted

Ru-El Sailor may have found hope for his possible release from prison. along with Sailor. Only after the verdict did Cordell Hubbard admit in court it wasn’t Sailor who was with him, but another friend later identified as Will Sizemore.

Sailor’s attorney now has two more pieces of information that help bolster his plea for release. Recently, Corral visited with Nicole Hubbard in prison. In her first statement at any time in this case (she did not testify at trial), she paints a picture that is very different from the state’s case and one that also syncs with Sailor’s tale.

In the handwritten affidavit — signed and notarized — Nicole says she drinking and smoking wet with Lamar and others throughout the night. When she was dropped him off at home, Nicole says she was expecting him to pay her back for the drugs. Instead: “When Clark Lamar came out of the house he had

a hand gun in his hand and he was smiling. I asked him, ‘Dude, you pulling a gun on me?’ Clark Lamar replied, ‘No,’ still smiling with the gun in his hand. I immediately pulled out of the drive way and took off.”

Nicole admits she called her brother and relayed the situation.

Later, she says in her affidavit, Cordell told her he “and his n**** Will was on my side of town” — reference again to Will Sizemore.

A second affidavit also points in the direction that it was Sizemore, and not Sailor, who was with Cordell that night. Anthony McKenzie was with Cordell and Sailor as they drank and clubbed throughout the night of the murder. “Cordell and Will Sizemore left the bar together,” McKenzie writes in his own recent affidavit. He also claims he didn’t come forward with this information

According to Corral, these affidavits, along with other information, will form the backbone of a new trial motion that she’s currently working on with the Ohio Innocence Project. Corral also says she has been informed by the Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office that Sailor’s file at the county’s Conviction Integrity Unit has also been re-opened.

All this good news for Sailor comes with some bad: he was recently transferred to the state prison in Lucasville, hours away from family and his legal support.

Still, “he’s really excited,” Corral says. “But any time you get close to the finish line, it gets hard.”

MY WEEKEND AT A NORTHEAST OHIO NUDIST CAMP

By Rachel Hunt CRADLING MY BEACH TOWEL close to my chest, I clutch a red Solo cup full of champagne and pineapple juice. I take a long drink and start to relax a little, eventually setting the cup and towel aside. I sprawl out on the chair, uncovered, closing my eyes and basking in the uninhibited sunshine as water laps the sides of the pool.

“Hey, did you two get settled in okay?” a maternal voice asks me.

I open my eyes and reach for my glasses. “Oh yeah, we’re having a great time,” I reply, pulled back into reality for a second, a little dazed by the warmth of the July day enveloping my body.

“All right, well, just as a reminder,” the voice says, “there is no clothing allowed in the pool.”

“Gotcha,” I respond, already completely naked.

We’re a half an hour south of Cleveland at the Green Valley Family Nudist Camp, a place where men, women and families cavort together in the nude, located near neighborhoods in Medina County that shade red on your friendly local political maps. A nudist camp in Northeast Ohio? Many neighbors don’t even know it exists, let alone the rest of Clevelanders. It’s one of those perplexing places, cloistered by choice and circumstance, with a rich and colorful history brimming right beneath our noses. Or other body parts, as the case may be.

I rank high on the “comfortablebeing-naked” scale, probably because I am young and have received relatively little negative feedback when naked. I identify

with white, body-positive feminists (a la Lena Dunham), and have accepted the bumpy, square-shaped structure I was born in. Being undressed doesn’t scare me.

There’s very little history of Green Valley online, save for a barebones website that boasts “average people from all walks of life” with members “of all shapes and sizes.”

A few articles from the early 2000s offer little information to sate the curious mind. So what’s a gal to do but go experience it for herself, right?

I made a reservation for midJuly and convinced my best friend to come along, for comic relief and company and because, at the end of the day, it’d be a story to tell.

Bonnie is like me in many ways, a mixture of eccentric and curious, liberal yet self-aware. We had

envisioned bringing more guests on the adventure but, it turns out, organizing mutual friends to sign up for a weekend in our birthday suits proved difficult despite the short drive. Even my boyfriend declined to join the Garden of Eden outing. Like the vast majority of people, he said it was too far out of his comfort zone to spend a couple of days naked with strangers. Alas, we set out as a fearsome duo.

We made our way to Green Valley, or the approximation that Google Maps had found for our search, via hilly back roads and past horse stables and the Bath Township ballparks. FEATURE of visitors this season, which runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day, because of the good weather, our guide tells us. Ten cars are parked in the lot by the time we arrive at 11 a.m., and just as we finish unpacking our towels, a mammoth RV from New York pulls up just feet away from the cabin. A couple, probably in their 60s, emerges.

Meanwhile, Bonnie and I have disrobed and made our way across the courtyard to the pool.

The fenced-in perimeter of the 72,000-gallon pool is the only zone of Green Valley where it’s mandatory to be naked. They do this for sanitary reasons, but with the water temperature set to a balmy 85 degrees (and 101 degrees for the hot tub), who really needs a suit, anyway?

Thirty chairs surround the pool and six are occupied by the time we sit down. Nudist etiquette dictates that you should bring at least one towel with you at all times. That’s to sit on. Towels, as suggested on the site’s FAQ section, are also good for the rare occasion someone becomes visibly excited. “Simply don

“I think a lot of people knew about it, but thought it was more legend,” says Kaitlyn Berle, a friend whose parents live only a few miles away from the camp, when I tell her about my trip. “I knew it was real, but I also can’t believe you went.” In 28

Each of the six board members I met with seemed impressed that I had been willing to bare it all for the sake of telling their story.

It was similar to the vulnerability that they had gone through

themselves: Everyone starts as a visitor at Green Valley. In 1929, the first nude organization in the United States was established as an extension of a German movement called Nacktkultur, which encouraged people to lead a healthier lifestyle associated with being nude. In the 1930s, nudism gained popularity due to growing tolerance of sexual expression in America and testimonials of its therapeutic physical and mental benefits, according to Naked: A Cultural History of American Nudism by Brian Hoffman. That’s about the time the history of Green Valley begins, at least so far as can be recounted these days.

Rumor has it that 80 years ago, the land was purchased by owners of the May Company who wanted a country estate for their friends and family to partake in what was one of the newest and most provocative trends of the time: naturalism.

Green Valley continued to grow from a few modest wood cabins and primitive campsites, adding sanctioned lots with electricity for trailers and RVs as the years passed. Then, in 1973, the government took part of Green Valley’s property in order to build Interstate 271, land-locking a

Speculation at the time surmised that local officials purposely planned the I-271 construction through the nudist community in order to spurn the organization, but the rumored distaste for the camp was never officially documented.

Around the same time as the concrete highway opened, nudity became legal on private property in Ohio.

The GV co-op decided to sell the land on the opposite side of the highway to the Firestone family.

This piece of Green Valley became Allard Park and at the very back of the public park one of the original Green Valley cabins stood until it crumbled five years ago.

Before computers and the internet, the only way to find out about naturalist resorts and beaches was through the American Association for Nude

Recreation (AANR) or, as they were known in tamer times, the American Sunbather’s Association (ASA). AANR, Green Valley’s parent organization, placed ads in publications to drum up interest.

“I read about AANR in Playboy,” says Steve, Green Valley president.

“I was one of the few that actually read Playboy.”

“You read Playboy, we read Penthouse!” exclaims Green Valley’s corresponding secretary, an 80-year-old woman with short, curly hair, wearing a key-lime colored sarong with white lace details, who for the purposes of this article would like to be known as “the Queen of Green Valley.” A member since 1978, she is one of the longest-tenured members, just behind a couple who have been attending for 50 years this summer.

“Reading things online now, nude-cations come up all the time, but you never used to see that, not even five years ago,” says Vicki, the camp’s activities director, who has been a member, with her husband, for 14 years. He brought up the idea of nude recreation to her after a trip to the dentist’s office where he saw an ad for AANR in a Travel & Leisure magazine.

Green Valley is a far cry from resorts such as Hedonism II in Jamaica, which is mentioned throughout popular culture as an erotic vacation destination dedicated to explicit encounters and ample drug use. Green Valley is a far, far cry from that, but both are lumped together into the nude recreation industry, which brings in an estimated $400 million in business annually, according to USA Today.

“If people are open to it and want to try this,” says Vicki regarding nacationing, as it’s been called, “it’s a smaller place to go rather than a massive resort. I think it’s more people-friendly.”

There are 97 lots on the grounds of Green Valley, divided into affectionately named sections based on geography, like “Bare Bottoms” and “The Plateau: Home of Frog Hollow.” Four visitor cabins are available for rent. Bonnie and I stay in “Starlight,” which goes for $55 a night.

Visitors must pay a daily fee, which is discounted if you are a member of AANR, INF (International Naturist Federation), or TNS (The Naturist Society).

There are roughly 160 members, with 26 living on the

grounds during summer months.

Membership is predominantly heterosexual couples but, “We don’t dictate a couple as a man and a woman. A couple is a couple, you know,” President Steve says. “We’ve had many gay and lesbian couples.”

Only 10 percent of Green Valley’s members are single, one reason being to create a balance between sexes and perpetuate the familyfriendly atmosphere. Green Valley’s members range in age, but there is a large concentration of 40- to 60-year-olds. Bonnie and I seem to be outliers during our weekend stay.

Green Valley has established itself as “family-oriented,” which may seem ethically questionable, but there are two generations of members from the same family registered at the campsite.

Two New Exhibitions Beginning this weekend, BAYarts presents two new exhibitions in its galleries. Van Aken Beer Garden Held in the parking lot of Van Aken Center in Shaker Heights, the Van Aken Beer Garden, a bi-weekly event, celebrates summertime with music, food, beer, wine, cocktails, retail vendors, and activities for the kids.

ART DRAW HARD A showcase of work by local cartoonist Nathan Ward launches at Loop

By Josh Usmani IT’S BEEN A BUSY YEAR FOR local cartoonist Nathan Ward. On the same day as the birth of his newborn, he was awarded one of this year’s Creative Workforce Fellowships from Cuyahoga Arts and Culture and the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture. Thanks to the fellowship, he has been able to dedicate more time to his comics, which is a damn good thing.

In celebration of the release of his latest self-published comic, Loop Tremont presents an exhibition of his recent work, opening with a reception from 6 to 10 p.m. this Friday, as part of this month’s Walkabout Tremont.

The exhibition showcases Ward’s latest creation, Warpwish Comix, which he’s been working on all year.

The exhibition includes original black-and-white ink drawings from the comic, as well as larger fullcolor prints of some of the pages. A followup to Ward’s 2014 Fun-O-Planet, Warpwish Comix #1 is printed on newsprint pages with a glossy cover.

“I like floppy comics and I like that newsprint ages over time,” says Ward.

“It puts a comic in a time and place.

Thick hardcover graphic novels are nice, but it’s sad to read a comic like that.”

In addition to drawing comics, Ward has plenty of other interests; he plays in a number of punk bands, such as Cruelster, Perverts Again and Smooth Brain. And he combines his love of art and music by creating flyers for local and national bands and concerts. He also hosts The Good Nite Show with Little Triv, a radio show on WRUW that satirizes The Mike Trivisonno Show on WTAM. Fellow Workforce Fellowship recipients include John “Derf” Backderf and John G., who introduced Loop’s Amanda Lee to Ward’s work.

“I knew that he was a guy around the Cleveland punk scene. I had seen some of his flyers and they had piqued my interest, but it was John G. (of Shiner comics/Lake Erie Monster) that finally got me into Nate’s comics,” says Lee, Loop’s organizer of exhibitions.

“He had been talking Nate up, and I finally gripped a Fun-O-Planet comic and some rad pins at John’s Ghengis

Con. After that, I totally got it. Nate is carrying the Cleveland torch of underground weird comics.

I know Cleveland can’t quite claim R. Crumb — he lived here for a while and helped make our most famous comic, American Splendor — but I feel Crumb’s presence in Nate’s work.”

Looking forward to the exhibition and beyond, Lee says, “Now that Nate has won the CAC Grant, it’s going to be interesting to see his transition from comics, ads, and flyers to fine art pieces and larger scale works. My favorite thing about showing people who have done DIY artwork for awhile is that they have an ethos that I care about; they’ll have stuff for our poor punk Cleveland friends — like $10 comics and prints — and they’ll have bigger or original pieces for the collectors.”

A lifelong Clevelander, Ward was born in 1992, and grew up in Fairview-Park, on the city’s west side. As a child, Ward and his twin brother Alex borrowed comics from the Fairview Public Library.

During his high school years, his go-to shop for reading material became Carol & John’s Comic Book Shop. Today, Ward’s comics can be found in that very shop in a special

animation, Ward found inspiration during his first year at CIA in the school’s library, and its collection of alternative comics. Ward’s comics feature a strong DIY aesthetic, influenced by th0se underground comix of the 1960s and ’70s.

“I found solace in the school’s library where I would just pummel through their (tiny) alternative comix section,” he says. “I knew of Harvey Pekar from the American Splendor movie, so I was drawn to those books first. I’d read those while riding the Rapid to the east

section dedicated to local creators, like Ward’s fellow CWF recipients Derf and John G., as well as Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor, which played a major role in Ward’s development during college.

side every day for hours and I felt some kind of spiritual connection with this gritty, cranky Pekar man.

Robert Crumb’s pages blew me away, so I looked into that whole movement and it was all so gross and hairy and amazing. For the rest of college, I just tried honing my personal artistic vision through every assignment, even if it didn’t always

fit. Drawing ugly is easy for me, and it’s the right thing to do.”

His comics and illustrations have been featured in numerous publications, including Scene’s annual Comics Issue, the Plain Dealer, Happiness Comix Anthology, Maximum Rock ’n’ Roll, Pork Magazine and countless punk concert flyers and album covers, both locally and nationally.

Last year, Ward self-published the first issue of his new ’zine, PUS, which features comics, interviews, record reviews and work by other artists with a focus on Cleveland’s punk music scene, both past and present. He also began travelling to various small press conventions and expos throughout the country.

MOVIES ANYTHING BUT ORDINARY A romance goes awry in the drama Indignation

By Danielle Immerman PLENTY OF FILMS CENTER on the trials and tribulations of young adulthood; many movies depict the ways in which college can be a battlefield for self-discovery.

However, in Indignation, Marcus Messner’s (Logan Lerman) journey from New Jersey to an anti-Semitic college is anything but ordinary. The movie opens Friday at the Cedar Lee Theatre.

Set in the early 1950s, the aptly named film tells the story of a highly intelligent Jewish boy who ventures off to a small college in Ohio where he is treated unfairly by the dean for being Jewish. However, unfazed by discrimination, Marcus refuses to accept prejudice as normalcy.

He rejects the bid of a prestigious Jewish fraternity, seems content with having no social life, routinely verbalizes his thoughts on the absurdity of attending chapel and finds solace in his studies. His life is normal, perhaps even a little bit boring.

But then he takes fellow student Olivia Hutton (Sarah Gadon) on a date.

Like most other coming of age movies, the premise of Indignation predictably revolves around romance.

Boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, boy’s life changes because of girl.

However, despite the predictability of this narrative, the film is still hauntingly beautiful to watch.

You know Marcus will fall for Olivia from the minute he meets her. Beautiful, mysterious, smart, mesmerizing and profoundly different, Olivia is everything a man could ever want but can never have; Marcus’s mistake is believing he could have her.

The beautiful disaster that unfolds is, of course, inevitable.

From the moment Olivia candidly confesses to being hospitalized for attempted suicide, it’s clear that her sanity would come unraveled at the hands of Marcus. Though she seems stable during their fleeting time together, her sexual promiscuity and secrecy plagues their future. This short-lived love affair ruins Marcus.

Olivia ends up hospitalized after a nervous breakdown while Marcus winds up fighting in the Korean War. The Titanic-esque crash of their

lives is hard to watch. In fact, at times, the film feels like a horror movie. If not for the lovely, soft score, period-piece costumes and cinematography, it could easily be classified in a different genre.

The film’s shortcoming lies in the fact that it doesn’t develop Olivia’s character. She’s a fascinating and mysterious character, but she gets very little screen time. The audience knows next to nothing about her except that she almost killed herself and spent the remainder of her life haunted by her mental illness. At the beginning and end of film, we see a nurse caring for an old Olivia in a room with wallpaper that’s reminiscent of the flowers she gave Marcus. If not for the wallpaper, it would be unclear as to how much she actually cares for him. We know what becomes of Marcus, but her life is far more intriguing than the protagonist’s; it’s just too bad the movie ends before we can figure her out.

SPOTLIGHT: ANTHROPOID WORLD WAR II MADE LIFE PARTICULARLY difficult for the people of Czechoslovakia.

The country had to contend with a certain Reinhard “The Butcher of Prague” Heydrich (Detlef Bothe), a Nazi extremist who was the mastermind behind the Final Solution.

Heydrich led the Nazis who occupied the country and turned Czech against Czech as he created an environment of fear during his reign. He was a real son of a bitch, a man whom even Adolf Hitler found a little scary.

With his new film Anthropoid, which opens Friday at Tower City Cinema, writerdirector Sean Ellis ( Metro Manila) revisits Czechoslovakia during the time period to tell the remarkable story of how Jozef Gabík (Cillian Murphy) and Jan Kubiš (Jamie Dornan), two soldiers from the Czechoslovakian army-in-exile, parachuted into Czechoslovakia to try to take out the Butcher. A thrilling film based on actual events, the movie benefits from the fact that the story of Jozef and Jan’s valor hasn’t been told and retold in the past. Unlike many war

movies that center on stories with known outcomes, Anthropoid centers on a little known story.

Not knowing the outcome creates a good deal of suspense in Anthropoid, and Ellis gives these war heroes the tribute they deserve by depicting the ardor of their task in his historical drama.

When Jozef and Jan land in the woods outside Prague, things immediately begin to go wrong. Jan cuts himself on a branch and can barely walk, and the farmer who finds them turns out to be a turncoat. But they eventually make their way into the city and work with other resistant fighters there to coordinate a plot to assassinate the Butcher.

Given their limited resources (they have little in terms of guns and ammunition), Jozef and Jan don’t seem to have much chance of pulling off the assassination. But they make the best of what they do have and come up with a plan that involves intercepting the Butcher as he leaves Nazi headquarters one day.

It’s not giving too much of the film’s plot away to say that their plan doesn’t go off as intended and the duo then has to endure the wrath of the Nazis. The film’s second half focuses on the way the Nazis tore through the city to try to find the guys who tried to assassinate their leader. The torture scenes are particularly excoriating, and the body count rises as the Nazis struggle to find where the assassins have hidden. The film effectively conveys the horrors of war.

Dornan is terrific as Jan, a fighter willing to risk anything to complete the task at hand.

And Murphy excels as the less-assured Jozef, a guy whose hands shake so much that he has trouble firing a pistol when he and Jan begin their venture. By the end, he becomes a ruthless solider, a transformation that Murphy handles adroitly. In fact, the other actors and actresses in the ensemble cast all deliver compelling performances as well.

A STEP ABOVE In a crowded landscape, Thai Kitchen in Lakewood dishes up authenticity

By Douglas Trattner PICK UP ANY THAI RESTAURANT menu in town and you’re bound to see the same collection of popular chestnuts trotted out time and time again. That’s not the case at Thai Kitchen in Lakewood, home to Chef Kwan and her lengthy roster of authentic restaurant-style and home-style Thai dishes. A graduate of one of Bangkok’s top culinary arts programs, Kwan boldly and unequivocally sets herself apart from the rest of the field.

“This is the most authentic Thai restaurant in Cleveland,” she proudly states. “We have dishes on the menu that you will not find anywhere else.”

Diners reward restaurants like Thai Kitchen and operators like Kwan, which is why this buried treasure has thrived for 20 years despite a Lilliputian footprint that constricted diners and cooks alike.

The Birdtown restaurant originally was opened by Kwan’s cousin, Jum, who retired in 2010. Since that time, the chef has nearly doubled the size of the menu and doubled the size of the restaurant. This past January, the owners expanded into the adjacent space, allowing them to build a bright and roomy new seating area that increased the number of chairs from 12 to 28 while offering views of the greatly enlarged open kitchen.

If your favorite Thai restaurant

doesn’t offer the customary array of condiments with meals, perhaps you should consider finding a new one. These four-compartment caddies are like the salt and pepper of Thai dining, allowing diners to customize dishes to suit their tastes. Kwan offers up small containers of pickled chiles in vinegar, roasted hot chile powder, Thai chile flakes in oil, and a sweet and spicy concoction with fish sauce.

In the starter department, there’s the intriguing sounding pickled mustard green soup ($3.50), a tart and tangy brew normally containing pork, but here also offered with chicken or tofu. Even familiar sounding dishes like the popular

Every diner should try it. Longtime fans of Thai food might discover that some of their favorite dishes are prepared differently here than at other establishments. The chef’s Thai beef salad ($12.99), for example, is not a toss of rare sliced beef and crisp greens in a cool, tart and bracing dressing. This version, from Thailand’s northeastern regions, involves cooking the beef in a hot dressing. Personally, I prefer the former.

tom yum soup ($3.99) don’t taste at all familiar. Far from the onedimensional versions that taste only of coconut milk, Kwan’s broth is tropical and creamy, but also bright and bursting with lemongrass and lime. The bowl is filled with poached sliced shrimp, shredded cabbage and mushrooms.

There might not be a more refreshing hot-weather dish than Kwan’s green papaya salad ($8.99).

outside of Thailand, notes Kwan, is a Burmese-style pork curry dish ($10.99) from Chiang Mai called hung leh (H5 on the menu). The rich, robust and silky sauce is loaded with tender pieces of pork and benefits from a housemade curry paste. Like most of the dishes served here, there’s an appropriate (read, “aggressive”) amount of heat. Curry (and heat) lovers should explore all of Kwan’s curries, which range from

the mild and mellow massaman to the explosive “jungle curry.” All can be made with chicken, beef, pork, shrimp or tofu.

If you took Kwan’s heavenly tom yum soup and added a tangle of chewy egg noodles, crisp-tender cauliflower and broccoli, and a heaping dose of red curry, you’d wind up with coconut curry noodle soup ($12.49). Served in a large bowl, and available with shrimp, chicken, pork, beef or tofu, the dish bounces between sweet and heat in that classic Thai fashion.

For dessert, the chef peels and dices ripe, fragrant mango and pairs it with sweetened black sticky rice ($4.99). Or, if you’re feeling brave, consider giving the durian fruit a try.

Describing the old setup, where a cramped dining room encircled the petite kitchen, Kwan says she and her coworkers felt like “sardines in a can.” Not only was the arrangement physically unworkable on busy nights when take-out orders were flying in, but it was artistically stifling. This cheery new kitchen acts like a pressure relief valve that should enable Chef Kwan to continue cooking for many more years.

AS SUMMER DWINDLES DOWN to the last days of August, certain traditions signify it’s almost time to head back to school. Blueberry picking was always among the less obvious family activities, more subtle than purchasing pointy new Crayolas. Fruit topped desserts, berry vinaigrettes and sweet garnishes bursting with flavor are making their way onto plates across Cleveland. It’s officially berry season.

Northeast Ohioans who want to support local farming and try their hand at freezing, canning or eating fresh fruit straight from the source can visit these convenient locations, all within an hour of the city. Sustainable local farming ensures that visitors will take home fresh fruit in bulk for only a few bucks and have a Pinterestperfect time doing it.

Not all farms are created equal.

These few are off the beaten path and all let you pick your own to get a taste for harvesting fruit firsthand.

Call in advance before setting out as this activity is dependent on weekly harvests and good weather.

If you can’t fit in the 45-minute drive to Doylestown, Coquette Patisserie concocts a variety of sweets using Rittman berries.

These guys specialize exclusively in red raspberries on this 16-acre farm, but you may have to wait a little longer to reap the rewards here. Raspberries at Rosby’s won’t ripen for a week or two; however, they’ll last clear into October. This Brooklyn Heights patch is just five miles from downtown Cleveland, so there’s no excuse for not making your way out to their garden center this year. They also produce their own soils and mulches, and sell pickling cucumbers and pumpkins.

EAT ZAYTOON COMES TO THE HALLE BUILDING

By Douglas Trattner A YEAR AND A HALF AGO, DAVID Ina and his parents, Ghada and Albert, opened Al’s Deli (1717 East Ninth St., 216-589-9223) on the main floor of the Residences at 1717, formerly the East Ohio Building. That popular deli is one of the few places in town where a diner can order a corned beef sandwich alongside a homemade falafel pita.

“Some days we sell more chicken shawarma than we do Reubens,” Ina explains. “It amazes me the amount of traffic that comes in particularly for the Middle Eastern food, which makes us really confident with this new concept.”

That new concept is Zaytoon Lebanese Kitchen, a Middle Eastern cafe that will open in the former Huron Square Deli space (1150 Huron Rd. E.) in the Halle Building, which closed last winter.

“When the space became available to us we were going back and forth about whether to open another deli, cafe or sandwich shop, but deep down, I’ve always had this concept in mind,” Ina adds. “Doing the food that is cooking from the heart.”

The 2,800-square-foot space will feature an open kitchen where fresh pitas will be baked in full view. There will be limited seating inside and out on the patio. Ina will be open for breakfast and lunch and expects to do extensive carryout and catering business.

Zaytoon will open early, offering Turkish coffee and Lebanese pastries like namoura, dense semolina bars flavored with orange blossom water, and kunafa in ka’ak, bubbling sweet cheese baked with shredded phyllo and tucked into sesame bread.

The lunch menu will feature lentil soup, salads like tabbouleh and fattoush, vegetarian and beef-filled grape leaves, spinach pies and meat pies, falafel, and beef and chicken shawarma rolled into pita sandwiches.

“We don’t want to over-complicate the menu,” Ina says. “We’ll keep the menu simple and add specials of the stuff I grew up eating that my mom makes, like stuffed zucchini and rolled cabbages.”

In Arabic, zaytoon means olive.

“The core of Lebanese food always starts with really good olive oil,” Ina says.

Look for the restaurant to open in late 2016 or early 2017.

CLEVELAND BAGEL CO. TO OPEN RETAIL AND PRODUCTION SPACE IN OHIO CITY Up to this point, the boys from Cleveland Bagel Co. (216-3957723) have been working out of rented space, first at the Cleveland

Culinary Launch & Kitchen and currently in a space belonging to Ohio City Pasta. That arrangement has been workable but not ideal, says owner Dan Herbst, who along with partner Geoff Hardman launched the food-based startup in 2013.

“This will be the first time the

kitchen will be set up the way I want it to be as opposed to just working in the situation that was offered to us,” he explains.

Co.’s production kitchen. Bigger and better equipment will allow the owners to expand their wholesale business, which currently is around 30 accounts spread across the city.

Instead of just a giant pot for boiling the bagels, Herbst says the new 40-gallon tilting kettle will greatly increase efficiency, as will a pair of new ovens.

“We’ll be able to work on other products too, like a really good rye bagel, a pumpernickel bagel, and a fruity breakfast bagel like cinnamon and cranberry,” he says.

But the best part of the equation is the 1,100-square-foot retail space, which will offer up fresh, hot, malty hand-rolled Cleveland-style bagels directly to customers.

“Doing wholesale business, nobody ever really gets the chance to get fresh bagels right out of the oven,” says Herbst, adding that those bagels were baked and delivered hours earlier.

Of course, the shop will offer coffee service, bagel and schmears, and will add a small roster of bagel sandwiches down the road.

“If we keep it simple and focus on quality, it will be nice,” he adds.

Herbst says they’ll be baking in the space within weeks and the retail shop will be open this September.

RHINEGEIST BREWERY TO EXPAND DISTRIBUTION INTO CLEVELAND AND AKRON Cleveland craft beer fans will soon spot the popular Cincinnatibased Rhinegeist beers and ciders in local bars, restaurants, liquor and grocery stores. Draft products will begin popping up the second week in August while packaged beer will start showing up the last week in August.

Rhinegeist translates to “Ghost of the Rhine” and refers to the brewery’s location in the historic Over-the-Rhine neighborhood.

The brewery is housed in the old bottling plant of the Christian Moerlein Brewing Company, once the city’s largest brewery.

Brewmaster Jim Matt, formerly of Sun King brewery, has a weak spot for dry, hoppy, West Coast-style IPAs. “Cleveland is a great craft beer town and we knew we would need to find the right partner if we weren’t going to do it ourselves,” says Bryant Goulding, co-founder and VP of sales. “The House of

LaRose [distributor] is a force in the Cleveland and Akron market and shares our commitment to customer service and building the Ohio craft beer market. We are thrilled and excited to announce this partnership and Rhinegeist’s expansion into the great city of Cleveland.”

TAVERN COMPANY RELOCATES TO BRENNAN’S COLONY SPACE For decades, the Colony has been a fixture of the Cedar-Lee neighborhood of Cleveland Heights.

That history ended last week when the business closed its doors.

But this saga has a surprising and satisfying twist.

Chris Armington, longtime employee of the Colony, and current owner of the nearby Tavern Company, has purchased the business and will relocate his operation across the street.

“It’s crazy, I know,” he says during a call. “I’m basically going back home.”

The Colony has been around for more than 30 years, but business seemed to have suffered in the wake of longtime owner Jim Brennan’s death two years ago. Armington, who worked at the Colony for more than a decade during Brennan’s reign, had designs on that space all along. In the end, no deal was ever cemented.

“That’s what I wanted seven years ago but it wasn’t an option then, so I bought the secondbest place [Tavern Company],” he explains. “My dream was to always own that place.”

Longtime Tavern Company (and Colony) chef Jamie Wynbrandt will make the move, as will the rest of the staff.

“I feel like the Colony was J.B. [Jim Brennan] and the Tavern Company is me,” Armington says.

“Why rebrand ourselves again? It took us years to rebrand the Tavern Company.”

The move nets Armington more dining room space, a larger kitchen, more parking and that lovely back patio.

As for the old Tavern Company property, it’s for sale, lock, stock and barrel, says Armington.

“I’m selling the business, I’m selling the equipment, I’m selling the liquor license, I’m selling everything.”

But they didn’t always have such a radio-friendly sound. When the band first formed in Buffalo in 1986, its music sounded harsher, perhaps reflecting the city band members called home.

“Buffalo was a struggling city when we got together in about 1986,” says singer-bassist Robby Takac via phone from Los Angeles where the band was rehearsing for a summer tour that includes a stop

at Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica on Aug. 10. “The steel industry had pretty much moved out. The town wasn’t doing great, quite honestly.

The music scene was awesome there when we were kids. Our social scene was small but pretty vibrant. That’s where everything came together. In my mind, it was a much more open scene back then. People weren’t into just Jamaican jungle and EDM or that kind of categorization.”

Takac says he has fond memories of the band’s first-ever show.

“We played at the local punk rock club for half a case of beer, which was gone before we were finished,”

he says. “It was an uneventful punk rock show but there seems to be an awful lot of people who remember being there. I don’t remember it too vividly.”

The Splatcats, another Buffalobased punk band, helped the Goo Goo Dolls get their first record deal with Celluloid Records.

“We did a demo maybe six weeks after we were together,” says Takac.

“That made its way out. Some of the songs became our first album, which came out in 1986. From there, we went to Metal Blade and many of its subsidiaries.”

With 1993’s Superstar Car Wash,

the band shifted musical gears to deliver a more palatable mix of punk, rock and pop.

“I can remember arguing about whether we should try something new or stick with the thing we know that people who like us dig,” says Takac. “We wanted to move forward. A lot of our favorite bands were doing things that were much more advanced. We did what we were comfortable with. What we were good at was being super loud and causing a scene. MUSIC in that time and [singer] John [Rzeznik] especially has looked out there to see what was going on and how we can apply to it what we’ve done from the beginning.”

The band came of age during a time when groups would change their sound and evolve, so it wasn’t a huge shock when its sound morphed.

The band had one of its biggest breaks with a slow song, the power ballad “Iris.” The guys originally recorded the tune for the 1998 film City of Angels and then included it on their studio album Dizzy Up the Girl.

“When we got asked to be on that City of Angels record, it was U2 and Peter Gabriel and Alanis Morissette and I’m forgetting some of the big ones,” says Takac. “It was crazy. We thought it was cool that we got on the record. We didn’t think much of it. John got called into the movie producer’s office and had a demo of the song and brought in a guitar and played him the rough sketch.

The producer loved it and told us to do it. We also decided to put it on our album [Dizzy Up the Girl] and against the odds it ended up becoming a standout track. Think of how different our career would have been if we hadn’t recorded that song.”

As soon as the band finished its last tour in support of 2013’s Magnetic, it started writing the songs for its latest effort, Boxes.

Takac says it worked differently on

and a subdued guitar riff that sounds a bit like something the Edge might play, the first track, “Over and Over,” includes the phrase “turn it up” in the refrain, setting the tone for the disc, which puts an emphasis on uptempo songs rather than ballads. “[‘Over and Over’] is the first song that we sat together in a room and wrote together in 10 years,” Takac says. “John had this idea for a riff and we brought it to other producers and they didn’t like it. We brought it in to Drew Pearson, who was working on some other songs with us, and he said it was a great song, and he helped us get the most out of it. I’m proud of it. I hope it becomes a single [after ‘So Alive’].”

In retrospect, Takac says he and Rzeznik didn’t imagine the group lasting much longer than a few years. Thirty years on, it’s remarkable the two are still together (other members have rotated in and out of the band).

“We were glad to get that half of a case of beer and then figure out how to get another one,” says Takac.

“I don’t think when you’re 20, you think about anything you might be doing when you’re 50, especially when you’re a punk rocker kid.

It’s like, ‘Make it to 25? Are you kidding me?’”

Despite the “ups and downs” the band has experienced, Takac says he’s happy to still be touring and recording with Rzeznik.

“There’s a huge advantage to having years of doing that with the same dude you’re standing next to,” he says. “It’s more than that too. It’s being in the van and figuring out

the album and collaborated with other writers more extensively than it has in the past.

“With this record, we embraced that process of taking it song by song in a way that we weren’t able to on the last record,” he says. “We had never done that before. Sharing songwriting with other people was something John had to grow into a little bit more. I’m super proud of this record. We recorded all over the country with a bunch of different producers in New York and Los Angeles and the state of Washington. We worked a little bit in Buffalo. It was a super great experience and very positive.”

MUSIC ALL THAT JAZZ Singer-pianist Kandace Springs offers a track-by-track analysis of her latest album

By Jeff Niesel INSPIRED BY HER FATHER, a Nashville-based soul singer who’s worked with the likes of Chaka Khan and Aretha Franklin, singerpianist Kandace Springs began playing piano at age 10 and started singing when she was 13. She took classes at Nashville Jazz Workshop, the city’s community center for jazz, and honed her chops there.

All the hard work has finally paid off.

Produced by Grammy-winner Larry Klein (Lizz Wright, Melody Gardot, Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock), her terrific new album, Soul Eyes, touches upon soul and pop while adding jazz influences to the mix. The album’s 11 songs include a mix of originals and cowrites as Springs covers tunes by Jesse Harris, Shelby Lynne and War. Springs spoke about each track on the album in a recent phone interview.

“Talk to Me” Larry Klein wanted me to get with Jesse Harris to see what songs he had. He wrote songs for Norah Jones, and I love me some Norah. He lives in Tribeca in New York City. He has two apartments that he turned into one huge apartment. It’s pretty dope. He stated playing the song, and it immediately jumped out at me.

“Soul Eyes” featuring Terence Blanchard It’s my favorite song on the album. It captures me in all my rawness. I love jazz. That’s what I grew up playing. Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken are the guys who found Rihanna. They’re known for finding pop artists, but they’re jazz heads. Carl found the song, and it really moves me. The chords are so satisfying. The brilliant [producer] Don Was had the idea to get Terence Blanchard on it. I was like, “Yes.” “Place to Hide” It’s been around for a while. Judie Tzuke is a British writer. Lucie Silvas lives in Nashville. One other guy wrote it too. I heard it five years ago and loved it. I used to play it in my sets. I used to be a valet parking attendant at the Renaissance Hotel

what Sade and me would sound like if we had a baby. We wanted to channel that. I came up with the hooky part at the end. It was a lot of fun. Terence Blanchard contributes as well. It was over after that. He smashed that solo.

“Fall Guy” I wrote this with Evan Rogers and Carl Sturken. I’ve known them for 10 years now. That’s an important part of any story I tell.

We wrote that with Jimmy Harry, who wrote with Pink and Madonna.

It was born as it went. The idea is about being someone’s fall guy and covering for someone. It’s like telling the person, “You can commit your crime and do your thing until you figure out that I’m the one for you.”

“The World Is a Ghetto” That’s Larry Klein. I heard the song once or twice before. War has the best version all day. I have respect for that. Prince got on my case about this and said, “Why would you cover their song?” My version is more like Erykah Badu meets Nina Simone.

I was inspired by George Shearing who had an arrangement of a jazz standard called “I’ll Never Be the Same.” I don’t know where I found it. I think one of my teachers found it. If you listen to that song, you’ll hear the similarity. I was obsessed with Stevie Wonder too. I wanted to do these unpredictable chord progressions. It’s also like Duke Ellington with its simple but elegant lyrics.

MUSIC LOSE YOUR ILLUSIONS Local hardcore act Harvey Pekar gets conceptual on its new album

By Jeff Niesel GUITARIST ELLIOTT FRANK and singer Nick Kratsas have been friends since they were kids, but they never played in a band together until they formed the hardcore outfit Harvey Pekar a few years ago.

The lead screamer in the local outfit Heads Held High, Frank had “fucked around” with playing guitar and in the wake of Heads Held High’s implosion, realized he wanted to start up another band. So who better to experiment with than Kratsas?

“I wanted to be in a band but not yell,” says Frank one afternoon while sitting at the bar at Ohio City’s Platform Beer Co. “We had been friends forever so it made sense to start a band,” adds Kratsas, who has accompanied Frank.

“We felt like there was potential in playing together from the start.”

The two then met bassist Nick Schmitt outside the punk club Now That’s Class. The band, which also includes guitarist Ty Sickels, has had a rotating cast of drummers until Nate Kelly showed up.

“Whatever the web of friendships are in the band, they’ve been road tested,” says Frank. “The stuff that would throw hiccups into other bands doesn’t affect this band. Any damning, band-ending argument would have occurred years ago at this point. Both Nick and I have booked shows locally, so we feel like we know how to do band shit.”

The group initially issued a selfreleased EP, Thirty Ghosts, which they recorded locally at Brain Child Recording Studios in Lakewood.

“That record happened pretty quick,” says Frank. “As soon as we had enough songs that justified some type of release, we wanted to record right away. It had metastasized and we knew what the band was about.”

Last year, the guys followed it up with Upward, Not Northward, which they also recorded at Brainchild Records. The album included songs from the EP, but the group rerecorded them for the full-length.

“It was different from the EP,” says Frank. “We had had three different drummers so the songs were a bit different. After you start practicing, there’s a breakthrough period where you start learning new things at one point. The jump was a huge one. We

were way better than we were six months ago because of the practicing and digging into our instruments.

Even Nick’s voice sounds drastically different.”

Now, they’re set to release The Astral We. They play a Vinyl Release show at the Agora to celebrate its release and kick off a tour in support of the album. The album opens with the sludge-y “Huff Joules,” a song that features parched vocals and meaty guitar riffs. Kratsas’ sneering vocals and an onslaught of hard-rock riffs distinguish aggressive songs like “IfThen/Else” and “Truisms of Infinite Regress.” “Body, Our Contronym” features rousing gang-style vocals.

The album’s other songs have a similar intensity to them.

“I love hardcore from the late ’90s and early 2000s because it’s fun,” Frank says. “There was a bunch of rock ’n’ roll stuff happening back then, and the bands would play riffs that sounded like they could fit in a Thin Lizzy song. It had the urgency of punk rock but was also something you could hum for 20 minutes after you were done listening to it.”

The songs also revolve around a concept.

“I wanted to make the lyrics cohesive, so it’s all about human consciousness and the sense of self,” says Kratsas. “The album is about self-identity and the sense of being an individual. I’m interested in those ideas, and I drew inspiration from

“We wanted to do something different with the album,” says Kratsas. “These songs represent a cleaner break. Ty is in the band, and we wanted to write 10 songs for the album that would take that into account.”

While not especially melodic, the mid-tempo tunes are still fairly

Though Frank and Kratsas never met the late comic-book writer Harvey Pekar, they decided upon the band name because it references their childhood experiences hanging out at comic book shops.

“Elliott and I spent most of our

adolescence at a comic book store while we were discovering music,” Kratsas says. “When I thought of naming the band ‘Harvey Pekar,’ I was thinking of his honesty and observant nature and that aspect of his writing and, of course, the fact that he was from Cleveland. When I write lyrics, I think about how that fits into it. That aspect of it still holds true. I think of him walking down the sidewalk and grumbling about the people he sees. I think of my lyrics as observations of people in some similar sense.”

Frank says band members might all give wildly different answers about the group’s name.

“He’s a working stiff who could still be creative and have something to say,” says Frank. “We don’t have illusions of being rock stars. We all have day jobs, but we have an aggressive sense of purpose when it comes to being in a band. You can have a creative outlet and make something of importance and have that as a creative way to share an experience, but it’s not like you’re either an artist or someone who has a day job. It’s not stratified. It’s not either/or.”

Selwyn Birchwood: Often sounding like multiple guitarists working at once, Selwyn Birchwood has been carving a nice name for himself on the blues circuit these past few years. With 2014’s Don’t Call No Ambulance, Birchwood shows off a flair for tight riffs and flashy lead work. He also reels in some great musicians to guest on a number of those tunes (dig the brass on the title track). “Walking in the Lion’s Den” slows things down a bit, with Birchwood’s smoky vocals curling around a late-night lounge bass line, and “Tell Me Why” opens up into rock ‘n’ roll pastures and heavy-duty percussion. It’s clear that Birchwood has a knack for dynamics, and it’s a real treat to hear him combine that penchant with more traditional blues moves. (Eric Sandy), 8 p.m., $15. Beachland Ballroom.

It’s still complex stuff, it just comes off a bit more fun to our ears. The songs on Scary Blankets vary in length, but many are on the longer end of the spectrum; tunes like “Beneath the Shallows” and “Myrtle” are worth the investment, though, as they power through dynamic melodic structures and moods, culminating in pieces that are greater than the sum of their parts. Flogging Molly/Frank Turner & the Sleeping Souls: When Flogging Molly performed at House of Blues a couple of years back, the punk band delivered a rowdy, memorable set. Dressed from head to toe in black, front man Dave King looked a bit like a preacher. And when he held his arms up high triumphantly during the opening number â&#x20AC;&#x153;Screaming at the Wailing Wall,â&#x20AC;? he appeared to be blessing the masses that had gathered for his sermon. Not that there was anything religious at the core of the bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performance. The young up-and-coming emcee has penned lyrics for as long as he can remember but only began to take his craft more seriously in recent years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been writing forever and playing around when I was a little kid,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As far as taking rap and the art of it serious and trying to turn it into a lucrative business, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been about two years.â&#x20AC;?

SAVAGE LOVE VACATION

By Dan Savage DEAR READERS, I’m on vacation for the next three weeks — but you won’t be reading old columns while I’m away. You’ll be getting a new column every week, all of them written by Dan Savage, none of them written by me.

Dan Savage is a sports writer and the assistant director of digital content for OrlandoMagic.com, and he will be answering your questions this week.

“Other sports writers often tell me they enjoyed reading my latest column,” Dan Savage told me in an email, “but when they show me the article, it’s one of your sex-advice columns. The joke is going to be on them this time around when it’s actually my advice!”

Dear Dan, I’m a 36-year-old bisexual female.

I’ve been dating my nice Midwestern boyfriend for about four and a half years. Within the first few dates, I brought up nonmonogamy. I was pretty sure from past experiences that long-term monogamy wasn’t going to be for me. I get bored, I like attention, and I love the chase. He was against it.

I thought, okay, we have a lot of other positive stuff going for us and maybe he would reconsider in the future. I feel like I’ve lost a part of my sexual self — no adventures, no three-ways, I miss girls, etc. So I brought up opening up the relationship again. My thought is I could get what I need/want, and hopefully bring that excitement and spark back to our relationship. He listens to your podcasts, but he doesn’t think he could handle the idea of me with someone else. I don’t think I can handle the relationship as it is now, though. Are we doomed?

— A Girl Has Needs I appreciate you having your boyfriend listen to my podcasts — oh wait, that was probably meant for the other Dan Savage. Never mind. My podcasts probably wouldn’t have helped with this issue.

Your question reminds me of a topic that’s currently top of mind in my profession: NBA free agency. In

the basketball world, it’s the time of year when teams can go after the best available prospects not under contract and offer them a deal to join their team.

Organizations heavily vet these players, talking to their former teammates, coaches, and others to make sure that their values match up. There’s nothing worse than being locked into a fiveyear guaranteed contract with a guy who doesn’t fit with your franchise.

Actually, on second thought, there is — getting married to a guy who doesn’t share the same relationship goals and values.

If your boyfriend is someone who has no interest in open relationships, odds are he’s never going to be happy in that type of situation. And if you’re never going to be happy with monogamy, then you need to find someone whose values match your own. Unfortunately, some people are destined to play man-to-(wo)man, while others are more satisfied in a 2-3 zone.

Dear Dan, I’ve been hooking up with a good friend for about a year. We’re both single, and he lives in another state but comes to town for work every month or two, and we usually hang out and have really great sex. One of the things I’ve always admired about him is his ecoconscious lifestyle … which includes showering only about once a week to save water. His BO is pretty inoffensive, but I find that most times we hook up, I get a raging UTI within a day or two. I’m wondering if his infrequent washing could be allowing bacteria to live on his junk, causing my infections.

Is that possible? Do I need to have a talk with him about washing more frequently/thoroughly?

— Hurts To Pee The simple answer is yes, HTP. It’s great to have an eco-conscious lifestyle, but not at the expense of your urinary tract. If he cares about you as much as he does about the environment, then with a quick chat, he’ll probably focus a little more on his personal hygiene.

Especially if you explain to him that the overuse of antibiotics contributes to creating antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which can cause issues for the entire planet.
