Hello SA Current Leadership Team, The purpose of my email is to express not only to express my dissatisfaction and disappointment with the “SA Badasses” piece, but to also gain a better understanding of how the piece came to be and what were the qualities you looked for when selecting the “uncompromising, relentless pioneers new and old who’ve made (and continue to make) San Anto great”.

The intro reads: With San Antonio’s continued growth, it’s easy to focus on a #CityOnTheRise. But before the tech moment and the recent culinary boom, others had to lay the foundation for the River City’s upward trajectory. As such, we’re looking at uncompromising, relentless pioneers new and old who’ve made (and continue to make) San Anto great. From solar explorers to our first and second female mayors, we celebrate these San Antonio badasses.

What was your “badass”selection process?

Once you had your list of “badasses”, how did you determine which “badasses” would be featured in this peace?

I would also like to understand what is the goal and vision for your publication in terms of providing readers news and information?

NEWSMONGER Spurs Keep Rolling // New River Barges // First Win for SAFC Regular Season Success While NBA observers hold their collective breath over whether the Golden State Warriors will win 73 games, that team from South Texas is quietly — of course — updating a few records of its own on its slow and steady trod to the playoffs.

With a 102-95 win over the Toronto Raptors on Saturday, April 2, the Spurs set a single-season franchise record with 64 wins. And since the Warriors lost to the Boston Celtics last week, the Spurs now hold the longest active home winning streak.

The Spurs haven’t lost at home yet this year, and with two home games left, the team has a chance to do something unprecedented: post a perfect 41-0 in regular season games. But that will be hard to do, since the Spurs’ final two home games come against its toughest Western Conference rivals: the Warriors and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

seem to fly in the face of conventional Spurs wisdom. After all, the PopovichDuncan era Spurs are known to eschew 82-game records in favor of resting up for the playoffs. But there’s been plenty of that, too. No Spur ranks in the top 50 in terms of total minutes played. The Spurs who have logged the heaviest minutes are Kawhi Leonard, who’s played the 53rdmost minutes in the NBA, and LaMarcus Aldridge, who’s played the 68th-most. No other Spur even cracks the top 100.

Conversations about “the best Spurs team ever” will be reserved until after the playoffs. But from a regular season perspective, this year’s club has a fullcourt press on that discussion.

I’m on a (New) Boat!

Heading to the River Walk? Take a good, hard look at the barges ferrying folks.

They’ll soon be replaced by newer models.

Well, not too soon. The new versions won’t hit the water until 2018, in time for the city’s Tricentennial. But the updates will look completely different, and operate differently, too.

The updated design was created by METALAB, a Houston-based firm. The single-deck barges will run on electric motors, and have plenty of room to

accommodate people in wheelchairs. The decorative railings are slanted outward and designed to look like papel picado.

The METALAB design beat out 11 others from around the country. The final three were showcased last week in an open house where the public could provide feedback on their favorite.

In May, the City of San Antonio will put out requests for proposals to build and operate the fleet. A test barge will hit the river in 2017 to ensure that the design works on the River Walk.

Undefeated San Antonio sports history was made Sunday night. It just happened to be in Seattle.

San Antonio FC, the city’s new professional soccer team, debuted on April 3 against Seattle Sounders FC 2 in Tukwila, Washington. The inaugural game was also the club’s first win, as they shut out Seattle 3-0. Jason Johnson, a Jamaican national who previously played for the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer, scored two goals in the first half.

With a perfect record, San Antonio will hold its long-awaited home opener on Saturday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. at Toyota Field.

Legendary activist Dolores Huerta reflects on the current state of America MARK REAGAN/@210REAGAN

There are few people alive who can lay claim to decades of activism that changed history as much as Dolores Huerta.

At 85, Huerta witnessed the Civil Rights era. She is arguably one of the most influential labor leaders of all time, having co-founded the United Farm Workers with César Chávez in 1962. Following a savage beating at the hands of San Francisco police officers in 1988 at a peaceful protest against George H.W. Bush’s candidacy for the presidency, Huerta recovered and then aimed her wisdom and grit on women’s rights and encouraging Latinas to run for office.

On April 15, Huerta will join Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards at the Marriott Rivercenter for Planned Parenthood South Texas’ annual luncheon.

In late March, Huerta was kind enough to take some time and chat with us about the importance of Planned Parenthood, women’s rights and her thoughts on today as compared to her experience during the Civil Rights era and more. The interview is edited for clarity and length.

Why did you agree to speak at the Planned Parenthood South Texas luncheon?

Well, I’m quite honored to be invited to speak at that event, actually. Planned Parenthood is a great organization that does so much good and provides so many services all over America, and it’s an organization I hold in high esteem. It’s a great honor. Any woman would feel the same as I do.

Have you ever met Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards?

Oh, I’ve known Cecile for many many years, and I knew her mom and her kids.

Texas has relentlessly attacked Planned Parenthood. Most notably with the notorious 2013 law HB2 that requires abortion doctors to have hospital-admitting privileges and clinics to meet ambulatory surgical center standards. As you know, that law is in the hands of a Supreme Court sans one judge. What do Texans need to do to stop laws like HB2 before they end up at the Supreme Court?

We have to continue educating people on the importance of voting. That’s one of the many laws. I was in Corpus Christi, Texas, last November and people

were telling me horror stories where women had to travel hundreds of miles to get to a clinic, which costs an exorbitant amount of money for a safe procedure. Women have to rise up and organize families, neighbors and get people registered to vote and get some decent people elected to the Legislature in Texas. It’s in our hands. It’s in our hands to change this situation.

What do you think about Sen. Ted Cruz and Donald Trump?

What would you say to young women navigating this hostile landscape of politics and misogyny?

Well, either one of them would be a disaster because they both came out adamantly about defunding Planned Parenthood. Trump’s a misogynist. He’s demeaning to women, and I hope women are paying attention.

Well, I think a lot of young women don’t realize the danger that they are in because they take a lot of things for granted and are not understanding that so many rights can be taken away from us in the U.S. by legislators and Congress and at the Supreme Court level — whether Planned Parenthood can perform abortions at clinics in Texas — so many rights have been fought for, like Roe. V. Wade, and these can be taken away from us. Young women need to pay attention and get involved. Rights won in the past can be lost.

What can you say about the state of affairs in America today through the lens in which you saw the same country during the 1960s?

Well, in some ways, things are similar. And in some ways, they are very different. I think the scary thing is the way that the Congress and state legislatures are captured by people like the Koch brothers, rightwing billionaires who are putting so much money into campaigns to support their personal interests, like coal and petroleum. We have a real threat to our democracy.

People like Ted Cruz and Donald Trump and the violent statements they’ve made reminds you of Hitler. He came out with the same kind of rhetoric and the action, with the

There’s a lot of negatives out there, from HB2 to people like Trump and more. Are there bright spots in the realm of women’s rights?

ahead in the polls and in the delegates she’s been able to win. And going back to the ’60s, where you may have had one or two organizations, now there are dozens, if not hundreds, all over America fighting for women’s rights.

There are more women in legislatures and in Congress. So we’re inching up. At this pace, it will take about 200 years for gender equality. And we need to make sure that the women elected are feminists who stand up for equal rights for women, the LGBT community, climate change, immigrant rights, worker rights, union rights.

There is still a long way to go, and we need to empower women to know that, yes, they can be office holders and decision makers.

We see a lot of headlines about state and federal level efforts to restrict access to Planned Parenthood’s services and to defund the organization. But more nuanced efforts happen on the local level. For instance, several San Antonio City Council members voted to approve a zoning change that would make more hoops for ambulatory surgical centers — like say, a dentist office

or a Planned Parenthood clinic — to get approval before one can be built. What should San Antonians do about that?

People in those districts should remove them from office because they’re not voting for constituents but for religion. We had a similar situation with one of our assembly people here who said he couldn’t vote for equal rights or pro-choice because of his beliefs. He was voted out of office next election. Women should get out there and organize and field a candidate against people like that.

Jive Town FILM

Loosely based on local fashion designer and former Jive Refried vintage shop owner Agosto Cuellar, this web series, which made its online debut back in 2011, is getting pulled from the archives for a one-night-only, “specially edited” screening of all six episodes.

Five years ago, director Kimberly Suta told the San Antonio Current she was inspired to write a series about the wild scenarios she saw firsthand at Cuellar’s shop. “Jive Refried was always the central hub for all the craziness that goes on in Southtown,” she said. During the Spurs’ last showdown with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Coach Gregg Popovich started a lineup that included reserves Patty Mills, Kyle Anderson, Boris Diaw and Boban Marjanovic, who hung with OKC for a good half. “A lot of people think that art that was originally in the SBC Center is new art,” says Lisa Garcia, who, along with Alice Carrington Foultz, has curated the 200-plus collection since 2002. “It’s just that they didn’t see it. They’ve moved a lot of art from different locations.”

That happened after the renovation that was completed just in time for this record-breaking season.

However, as Garcia explains, there are new additions to the collection.

Publicly viewable pieces include “Exit Signs,” by Ethel Shipton; “Light It Up,” by Elizabeth Carrington; “We’re Good Right Here,” by Ansen Seale; “Champions,” by Rudy Choperena; “Hello Darlin’ Map,” by Cruz Ortiz; “The Sixth Man,” by Guy Hundere and “Buckle Up,” by Campbell Bosworth.

And there’s more on the way.

Garcia said the AT&T Center just purchased the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Veinticinco print portfolio, which features Latino and Latina artists.

“It includes living artists and a few deceased artists,” Garcia explained. “It’s a good representation

of the artistic community in San Antonio.”

The proceeds of that sale go to scholarships for the art department.

As for the entire collection, though it includes San Anto artists, it is not specific to the Alamo City.

“All of the art is by artists who are in Texas or were in Texas at some point,” she said. “So, Texas and the area.”

So no matter where a Spurs fan, or, really, anyone visiting to attend one of the many activities or events in the AT&T Center come from, there’s probably visual art that will give them some kind of reminder of home.

“We put together a plan of what we wanted the building’s art to represent,” Garcia said. “And so it’s representative of the activities that take place in the building, of the region, of values like celebration and family.” mreagan@sacurrent.com

The girl speaks quickly at first, only halfturned to the classroom.

She and the other girls in her class were assigned to picture a woman — how old is she, where is she, what clothes is she wearing — and write about her. Her teacher, Regina Moya, gives her a few words of encouragement, trying unsuccessfully to tuck a strand of the young Latina’s long, black hair behind an ear.

“En fuerte!” Moya urges. The girl’s speaking slows, and she finishes reading. Suppressing a smile, she takes her seat amid applause from her peers.

The scene is common: a bashful kid who’s hesitant to read in front of the class. But seeing the child act so predictably shy almost makes Moya forget that her students are indisputably brave at their core.

Moya teaches creative writing, painting and illustration to unaccompanied children — asylum seekers — who have migrated to the U.S. from Central America. All of them, from the elementary school-aged kids to teenagers, have journeyed from their home countries and crossed the border into the U.S. without their parents.

The children stay at Casa Blanca, a north San Antonio shelter operated by the nonprofit group Southwest Key. Casa Blanca houses about 45 children, where they live and take classes in a school-like setting until their court date, when a judge will decide whether they can remain in the U.S. or if they must return to their home country.

“They all think that they’re going to stay. They’re all hopeful. They’re not adults,” Moya said. “They all think ‘I’m going to stay and I’m going to give money to my parents.’”

Moya’s class, called the Migrant Children’s Project, is funded through a grant that Gemini Ink, a local nonprofit literary and arts organization, received specifically for migrant children. The grant pays for Moya’s time and for art supplies such as acrylic paint, brushes and sponges.

She teaches two classes per week — one for boys, one for girls — and each class lasts two • Paintings by kids in the Migrant hours. Casa Blanca is well beyond 1604 on top of a hill.

A manicured lawn sprawls around the large, white house, with a miniature soccer field (complete with astroturf) on one side of the front yard and a volleyball net on the other. It’s tucked into a quiet neighborhood — if you weren’t looking for the house, you’d pass right by it. The only noise outside is the chirps of swallows swooping by the front door.

The day I visited the girls’ class, they met in a small but tidy classroom with white walls and tile. Flimsy plastic posters, mostly in English, line the walls. There’s a map of the original 13 colonies, the solar system, units of measurement, the order of operations.

Inside the room, 14 girls, mostly of late middle or early high school age, sit. They’re all dressed in unicolor T-shirts, some yellow, some gray, some blue. Their shoes are all knockoff Converse Chuck Taylor’s, and most of their blue jeans are cuffed, some of them rolled up four or five inches.

Today they’re learning about using a spatula and rapid brush strokes to evoke a certain style. Moya shows them Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night,” and a YouTube tutorial on impressionism to guide them.

They set to work, snatching paints from the front table and rushing back to their desks. Soon, brushes flick back and forth across miniature canvases, like a set of metronomes all following different beats.

As they paint, they periodically hold their works up to Moya. She weaves in between the rows of desks, stopping to give advice or hold up examples for the rest of her class. The room’s filled with music piped in through her iPhone, a playlist of instrumental pop songs done in orchestral fashion (“Clocks” by Coldplay, “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve). Slowly, hazy skies, beaches, birds and waves of grass emerge on the canvasses. Moya photographs the paintings, but lets the kids hold onto them.

The art they create in the class are among their only possessions.

Local chef Susana Mijares demos baking talent on Food Network show KIKO MARTINEZ

Baking has always driven Susana Mijares’ ambition. In 2009, she and her family moved from Torreón, Mexico to San Antonio and opened Délice Chocolatier and Patisserie on the city’s far North Central Side. Seven years later, Mijares, a graduate of the Cordon Bleu Paris, has achieved another “lifelong dream” as a chef. Starting April 10, she will compete on the second season of the Food Network’s Spring Baking Championship for a $50,000 grand prize. During an interview with the San Antonio Current, Mijares (aka The Chocolate Queen), talked about what it’s like baking for her kids and what she hopes viewers take from her own personal story of determination.

Do you have the Food Network playing on TV all the time at home?

All the time! I have five kids and all of them watch the Food Network. I used to tell them that I was going to be on there one day. I teach my kids that if you have a dream and a purpose in life, you should just go for it. That’s what my parents taught me. For me to finally achieve this dream, it’s like all my family is part of it.

How do your kids enjoy having a mom who can bake sweets for them any time they want?

They love it! Since they were little kids, I taught them how to eat everything. I like them to try something before they say they don’t like it. They know how to bake. They really enjoy it.

It sounds like food and family go hand-in-hand in your household.

I come from a very large family in Mexico, so we’re always around food and celebrations like birthday parties.

For me, food is a way to represent the union of the family.

You can say a lot of things with a cake. I can speak through my food.

I can only imagine what a birthday party at your house looks like. Do your kids ask for customized cakes?

Yes, they want specific cakes! Sometimes they will draw me what they like. They tell all their

A lot of the time, yes! My kids will raise their hand and say, “My mom will do it!”

What are some examples of how you incorporate Mexican culture into the foods you bake?

Well, I was raised in Mexico and I studied in France and now I live in the States, so I try to make a mixture of all the cultures. I have this banana dulce de leche cream pie. I also make French macaroons and fill them with horchata flavor. I also have this recipe for dark chocolate cake with chipotle. It’s so delicious!

Immigration has been such a hot-button topic during the presidential race this year. As an immigrant who is living the American Dream, what message do you have for people debating the issue?

I think if you have a goal in mind and you work hard for it, you deserve an opportunity. I am a very hard-working woman with a very nice family. That’s what I’m showing people right now. I’m so glad I was given the opportunity to come here and to represent who I am. If we do our best and we are good people, we should be welcome and be proud of who we are and where we came from.

It’s so great that I get to do what I love the most in my life.

I do it with a lot of passion. I bake my heart out.

UNPACKING BURLESON YARD BEER GARDEN

New East Side watering hole defined by patio and pavilion MARK STENBERG

For a somewhat austerely styled concept, Burleson Yard Beer Garden has a lot to unpack.

Composed of a sprawling gravel-floored outdoor patio and a white-brick indoor pavilion, Burleson owes a hefty portion of its identity to its East Side location.

The beer garden is self-aware of its limited parking options and as recompense provides ample rows of bike racks to encourage green commuting. As if in response to the gesture, nearly half of the clientele on the Tuesday night I visited were cyclists.

The area also plays host to a frequently used set of train tracks that abut the east end of the patio. The tracks are perpendicular to Burleson Street, not 20 feet from the bar, which, in addition to making parking that much more difficult, also adds to the noise problem that plagues the site.

Two food trucks parked outside the north end of Burleson each add their own distinct soundtracks. The first truck, Professor Frank Furter’s, is attached to an electric generator for the time being, which chugged along gamely throughout the night. Within a week or two, bartender Daniel Delgado assured, an electrician is coming to provide a permanent electrical hook-up, which will not only cut the noise of the generator but will allow for a rotating cast of mobile food vendors to set up shop.

Feet away from the German-inspired hot dog truck was La Maceta Tapatios, a bustling taco truck offering everything from mini tacos (6 for $7) to their Mexican Hotdog ($8), an architectural marvel that hoists refried beans, a beef frank, pico de gallo, crema and homemade bacon under an Atlassian bun.

Drink specials of any sort would be welcome, as the recently opened beer garden boasts a full bar but lacks a composed cocktail menu. Delgado again assured that they plan to roll out a menu for mixed drinks within a week, but until then it’s either dealer’s choice or a selection from the bar’s muscular beer list.

Bracketed into “Drafts, Cans and Bottles,” the beer menu more than makes up for its unimaginatively named categories with its curation and affordability.

Craft beers such as the two I chose, the Ballast Point Sculpin IPA and Founders All Day IPA, run in the $5-$6 neighborhood, while staple domestic offerings lie closer to the $2 mark. Aim to arrive at Burleson between 4 and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday to take advantage of their $5 happy hour margaritas. Their micheladas, as rumor

has it, are also making an early case for some of the best in town.

The outdoor patio is the size of an Olympic pool and is split into three areas, each with their own distinct décor. The hive of the beer garden is front and center, waiting to greet you once you walk under the wooden frame — and mind your step — into the central drinking headquarters.

Metal chairs and tables of pastel greens, blues, pinks and yellows dot this district, which due to its adjacency to the bar within the pavilion, is packed with people waiting in line and buzzing around tables.

A raised wooden deck holds rows of rugged picnic tables and is saddled next to a currently dormant Spartan trailer. Soon, Burleson plans to use well-lit child’s play place. The inclusion of the play place, that area to host live music on Fridays and Saturdays, as well as the future live music patio and art installation, which — though adding another section to the site’s all speak to Beekly’s hope for the bar to be a community symphony — could make the northeast corner of the bolstering place. BEERS ON FILM Inspiration truly is wherever you find it, and for Marco Ortega, that inspiration was found in the San Antonio’s ever-burgeoning craft beer scene. Driven by his own interest in home brewing, Ortega, a professional videographer and filmmaker, decided to capture what is happening in the city on film in a forthcoming documentary entitled Brewed in the 210.

“I got into craft beer toward the tail end of college and I really got hooked when I started homebrewing about four or five years ago,” he explained. “It really took hold of me, and I thought it would be great to be able to tell the story of homebrewing and how interesting it is to create something like this from scratch. I wanted to learn more about the brewing process, so I reached out to the folks at Branchline Brewing and, from there, the idea evolved.”

This idea, much like the almighty yeast, which gives life to beer, germinated for several years as microbrewing was still in its nascent stages with only a smattering of daredevil brewers in town. As the San Antocentric beer movement grew, so did Ortega’s desire to document it.

“Last year, I knew I was going to have some time to do some work on a project, so I circled back to this one,” he said. “I started writing out the story that I wanted to tell. I thought about the different breweries, and I began reaching out to folks in town. I wanted to keep it in the 210 and San Antonio proper.”

What initially started out as a 20- to 30-minute short film has bloomed into a full-fledged hour-long documentary chronicling the stories and behind-thescenes folks who have revolutionized the local beer industry. More importantly, it

highlights “why” these men and women are so passionate about brewing.

“The story really is about how, at one point in time, San Antonio was a very, very big beer town. It was the beer mecca of Texas a long time ago with a lot of breweries here,” Ortega said. “It just died away as big beer moved in and started buying things out. The story is the re-emergence of craft beer in San Antonio and how these brewers, these owners and these entrepreneurs had a passion about beer and wanted to bring something artisan into this community.

They wanted to make San Antonio a big beer town again.”

The usual suspects are all featured in the film: Branchline, Freetail Brewing Company, Blue Star Brewing Company, Alamo Beer Company, Southerleigh Fine Food & Brewery, Ranger Creek Brewing & Distilling, Granary ‘Cue & Brew, Mad Pecker Brewing and Busted Sandal Brewing Company. The film will be unveiled during San Antonio Beer Week (April 2-10) with a main showing and then subsequent showings at several bars and pubs around town.

“I think San Antonio is one of those cities where the people living here can really get behind something and get really passionate about it,” he said. “We’re passionate about our basketball team. We’re passionate about things like H-E-B and Fiesta.

We’re very passionate about things that are homegrown. I think a lot of people from here have been wanting good beer for a long time and that’s why you’ve seen craft beer take off like it has.”

This statement from Blayne Tucker, one-half of the driving force and promoter extraordinaire behind Maverick Music Fest Maverick Music Festival (the other being Faith w/ the Flaming Lips, Radle), seems banal Public Enemy, The Drums, enough. I don’t know why I assumed Maverick Music Festival, now in its fourth year, would operate in perpetuity at La Villita, growing in size, stature and talent offered with every trip around the sun, eventually hosting Beyoncé and Jay-Z as they co-headline the main stage; Givenchy sombreros pulled low over their eyes, classic Spurs-colored confetti pouring down on the reigning King and Queen of Pop. With this year’s festival playing host to the Flaming Lips and Public Enemy, that doesn’t seem like a totally ridiculous idea … does it?

But that just doesn’t seem to be the case. Unless, of course, Tucker and co. can find a more suitable venue(s) for the annual two-day party promoting our city and its gradual ascension into “Realest Music Capital of the World.”

Well, if this year does end up being the last, at least it will go out with a dang ol’ bang of radical, psychedelic proportions. Here’s a brief synopsis of some of the folks you should get out and see for what may possibly be the final Maverick Music Festival EVER!

Let’s begin with Friday evening’s lineup. Austin’s “psychfolk surf-dream” band, The Deer, who somehow make a violin funky, will take the free-all-weekend Arneson River Theatre stage at 5 p.m. They will be followed by Alyson Alonzo (5:40 p.m.), who, if you aren’t aware, lives up to the hype. This honey-throated warbler, juxtaposing her grit and growl with smooth drops, dips and flows, should be headlining this motherfucker. How Taylor Swift is where she is and Alonzo is still here among us is as baffling as it is infuriating.

The Lost Project (6:10 p.m.) will get the crowd revved up as the first act on the main stage. This is the set to take your just-learning-to-skate-what’s-punk? little sister or your I-was-at-Strutter’s-when-the-Slackerstore-the-mother-down tio. They will be followed by Austin’s Bright Light Social Hour (7:20 p.m.), whose misleadingly emo-sounding name represents a group that packs a psychedelic peyote punch.

Skip back to the amphitheater facing the river stage and witness The Last Bandoleros (6:40 p.m.), who with their meshing of “one-part Tex-Mex, one-part Brit-pop and two-parts country rock,” have opened for notables Feist and The Mavericks and will precede his highness of new-wave Tex-Mex, Joe King Carrasco (7:40 p.m.) — another reason to bring your tios — followed by Yoshimoto (9 p.m.) and Snowbyrd (10 p.m.).

The Drums, a feel-good surf-pop band whose mostlauded contribution to the medium is a whistle hook that gets stuck in your head like a lure in a Marlin’s face (to keep with the corny beach metaphor), will play the main stage at 8:20 p.m.

Honestly, I have only seen DJ Jester the Filipino Fist (Plaza Juarez, 8 p.m.) play weddings, but if that is any representation of a typical set, his capacity to get all the modest moms and indifferent wallflowers onto the dance floor should do just fine with the Maverick crowd.

Calico Club, the death disco duo of DJ Galacticat, a local head who can school you on the avant-garde noise scene or the latest, hippest underground club anthems, and vocalist PleasureFaces, will close out the night on the Plaza Juarez DJ stage at 9:30 p.m., the other free-all-weekend stage.

For more than a decade, Yoshimoto has been infusing the San Antonio music scene with an innovative and sparkling sound. Their debut album, Lemmings to the Sea, sounds like it could compete with My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless to be the soundtrack for a long-lost Richard Linklater film about the flannel-clad parking lot royalty of Austin, before it got so “weird.” While their album stands strong on its own, Yoshimoto is known for their energetic and uproarious local shows, a powerful four-piece performanceto-be-reckoned-with among the city’s landscape of live music.

Snowbyrd, the local Lutz brothers’ main mode of rockage, travel at the tempo of tumblin’ tumbleweeds (emphasis on the weed). Backed by the dynamic rhythm

section of Kris Zebrowski (bass) and Ken Robinson (drums), the Byrd boys will close out the first evening on the River Walk stage, providing a local night cap, particularly for the more rural-minded of the rock ‘n’ roll crowd — city slicker shit kickers.

Competing with the country pop-punk group on the main stage will be Long Island’s politically provocative (if you’re any farther right than Hillary Clinton, in which case you must not be paying attention) hip-hop troupe Public Enemy (9:50 p.m.) — the group who revolutionized a generation of suburban youths who may have been satisfied merely fighting for their right to party.

Saturday’s festivities start at noon on the Arneson River Theatre stage with DJ Tear Drop of Chulita Vinyl Club, the all-girl, all-vinyl DJ collective that spins pretty much whatever the fuck they want (and will play the Plaza Juarez stage at 6:30 p.m.), from Chicano soul to riot grrrl tunes.

Beginning the day on the Plaza Juarez DJ stage will be KRTU station manager and reputable DJ in his own right, JJ Lopez (3:30 p.m.). If you drive east on Houston Street in the evening of any first or third Friday, you can hear the musical stylings of funk and soul musicians echoing through the city. That’s not your mind playing tricks on you, that’s DJ JJ Lopez spinning the sweet rhythmic sounds from another time for a dancing Soul Spot crowd at Tucker’s Kozy Korner.

The legendary DJ’s sessions are more than just an excuse to get out of the house after a long week, they are a sort of community service. Lopez is on a mission to bring together the young and the old in search of funk, groove and a dance floor that welcomes anyone who can appreciate the classics.

DJ Ernest Gonzalez and former city councilman, current State Representative Diego Bernal will spin next on the Plaza Juarez stage at 5 p.m. Chulita Vinyl Club and DJ B.C. Saturday will feature former Nun and punk rock ‘n’ roll lifer Javier Escovedo (2:30 p.m.), hometown indie darlings Buttercup (3:30 p.m.), blues spazz rock supergroup The Red Legs (5:20 p.m.) and Austin transplants — unforgivable — the pop-indie group The Hawks (of Holy Rosary), who will precede the Octopus Project (8 and 9 p.m., respectively), whose humanistic blips, bloops,

The Cave Singers

I know you don’t want me to tell you how another bearded bunch of bohemian bros from the Pacific Northwest have this rad folk-rock project that you simply must dig, but that’s exactly what Seattle’s Cave Singers are and that’s just what I’m about to do. Comprised, in part, of dudes who were all in fairly successful (and somewhat decent) post-punk acts in the early 2000s — Pretty Girls Make Graves, Cobra High, Murder City Devils — The Cave Singers comes to its warm-centered, slow-glowing folkrock songs by way of punk music’s looseness but none of its bombast. Over the course of five albums released since 2009, The Cave Singers, anchored by Pete Quirk and Derek Fudesco, has been consistent in making pretty, patient, rock-seasoned folk songs that feel like heartland hymns to broken love and aimless nostalgia. POLY PROBLEMS I am fresh out of a gay relationship, which started monogamous, opened up, dabbled with polyamory, but ran out of steam. I’m heartbroken and I need you to weigh in on a disagreement we had about polyamory, which is one of the things that led to our expiration.

I believe polyamory to be a small group of people all in love with each other, all sleeping together. He believes polyamory to be different pairings, where a relationship between two people would be lived and enjoyed separately from that couple’s pairings with other people. He thinks my definition would be impossible to find and sustain. I think his definition sounds like child custody in a divorce dispute.

Perhaps you would be just as satisfied, happy, and smug if you’d been in a monogamous/vanilla relationship all along. But it’s possible you wouldn’t be satisfied and happy now if it weren’t for the adventures and experiences you had then. To paraphrase St. Agnes Gooch of Mame (1966): You lived!

You see all that living as time wasted, MIM, but it’s possible — it may even rise to the level of probable — that the perspective and self-awareness you gained during the fuck-anything-that-moves stage of your life made you the man you are today, i.e., a guy who was ready to make a monogamous commitment and capable (so far) of honoring it.

Finally, monogamous/vanilla types routinely cross over into the ranks of the sexually adventurous/nonmonogamous and vice versa. (And monogamous/ vanilla and sexually adventurous aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive categories.) Instead of disparaging the choices others make — or disparaging the choices we once made — we’re better off encouraging people to make the choices that are right for them. And choices that are right for someone now may not be right for them always — and that goes for you too, MIM, even now.
