YOUNG GUNS It’s about time the Spurs got younger

For all the gloom that the Spurs’ offseason has produced, there is at least one silver lining: people can stop saying they’re too damn old.

Even by the team’s own standards, last year’s team was especially long in the tooth. Their average age, 31.6, was easily the highest in the NBA, the fifth time they’ve earned that honor in the past dozen years.

And the Spurs have obviously been excellent over that span, with three titles and many deep playoff runs between 2004 and today. But Duncan, Ginobili and Parker – once the younger members of those teams – were 39, 38 and 34 last year, respectively.

Despite a historic regular season, their loss to a younger, more athletic Oklahoma City squad in the playoffs made the need for fresh legs all the more obvious.

Now Duncan is gone. So are David West, 36, and Boris Diaw, 34, with Matt Bonner, 36, likely out, as well. In are stopgaps Pau Gasol and David Lee, along with a number of unproven young guys (and at least three rookies) that Gregg 10

Popovich will work into a group that includes 22-year-old Kyle Anderson and second-year guard Jonathon Simmons. The team will be four years younger next season, and it’ll likely be even younger in 2017-18.

Luckily, Kawhi Leonard had already been handed the keys to the franchise and LaMarcus Aldridge was signed to shoulder some of the load Duncan could no longer bear. With Gasol in the fold, Popovich has three go-to guys to carry the offense, while the next generation find their footing. Most teams undertake youth movements while bottoming out competitively. Not the Spurs. They’ll remain among the second tier of title contenders next season and, thus, have to be more agile in their efforts to bring up their young players.

2015 first-rounder Dejounte Murray will likely see extended time in the D-League. The athletic rookie oozes potential, but he’s still raw and somewhat position-less – people are still deciding if he’ll be better suited as a point guard or shooting guard. He may have his moments

next season, but he wasn’t drafted to be a major contributor now, and there won’t be many backcourt minutes to go around anyway.

Other newcomers like center Dewayne Dedmon and forward Davis Bertans will be leaned on sooner.

The Latvian Bertans brings an elite skill (three-point shooting) that should be serviceable from day one, while he slides between both forward positions. Dedmon may already be the best defensive big man on the team, but he’ll need to learn the Spurs system and keep his fouls down to stay on the floor. If he does, Popovich will be able to play a number of guys alongside him, whether it’s Aldridge, a defensively-weak player like Lee or Gasol, or a smaller guy like Bertans or Anderson.

With Diaw gone, Anderson may step into the role of the playmaking forward that can do a bit of everything.

He’s spent the last two years earning his coach’s trust, and a minor breakout year isn’t out of the question.

It’s that versatility that makes this crop of young players intriguing. There may not be a future superstar among them but, that’s OK – for the first time in a while, Gregg Popovich has a number of guys to mold at once, and a less rigid team to ease them into.

In the meantime, fans may have their own adjusting to do, with next year’s Spurs playing a little more above the rim than usual.

The workers who print your daily newspaper handed out fliers outside the San Antonio Express-News building downtown last week demanding a wage increase to keep up with rising healthcare costs, something they say hasn’t happened for about a decade.

Phil Bunker, vice president of Teamsters Local 657, which represents the press workers, says the union took to the step of leafleting outside the building because contract negotiations with Hearst, which owns the daily, have been stalled for months. Meanwhile, he says, workers are forced to deal with rising out-of-pocket healthcare expenses while their pay remains stagnant. “The problem is, some are now essentially being priced out of their health insurance because the Hearst corporation will not discuss any wage increases,” Bunker told the Current.

If you’ve spoken to any of the number of Express-News reporters who’ve left the paper in recent years, it should come as no surprise that pay has remained relatively flat at the daily over the past decade. But Bunker says that has hit the building’s press workers particularly hard. He estimated that healthcare premiums for those workers have risen somewhere close to ten percent in recent years. Meanwhile, he says maximum out of pocket expenses for a family plan went from about $4,000 in 2011 to nearly $13,000 this year.

“That’s where they’re getting them...

It’s coming out of their pocket to pay for a bunch of stuff that before was covered,” he said.

Bunker says the union, which represents about 30 press room workers, didn’t even try to negotiate a pay raise over the past decade because of the shaky state of the news industry and the recession. And even as overall

daily circulation has plummeted for the daily over the past decade (from around 230,000 copies to 133,000 at the end of 2013, according to the most recent audit) the press room continues to take on new business. Just last year, Cox Media Group, which owns the Austin American-Statesman, stopped publishing in Austin and tapped the Hearst-owned Express-News and Houston Chronicle printers to put out its papers.

The last time the union sat down with Hearst lawyers to talk worker pay was in March of this year, Bunker says, when parties hammered out a tentative agreement on some sort of incentive plan for workers. The idea, he said, was workers who cut costs, reduced waste and implemented more efficiencies would see pay bumps.

The plan, however, never materialized because Hearst never followed up with an actual offer, Bunker says. The paper directed our questions to Susan Lynch Pape, who was recently named the new publisher of the daily; she didn’t respond to our calls for comment last week.

Roy Lopez, who’s worked the presses at the daily since the late 1970s, was among the workers passing out leaflets Wednesday. He says the days of austerity should be over at this point. “Back when the economy collapsed, we agreed with them, we knew nobody could be getting a wage increase,” he said. “But we’re now at the point where even McDonald’s and Walmart are starting to pay people more. Why not us?”

As to why Hearst won’t budge on pay, this was Lopez’s take: “We strongly believe they refuse to negotiate any wage increase so they don’t have to look at wage increases throughout the company. We’re not the only ones.”

WRONG GUY Feds clear San Antonio officers who beat man they mistook as suspect

Rogelio “Roger” Carlos was just photographing the construction of his family’s pediatric clinic on the far northwest side on May 20, 2014 when an undercover San Antonio police officer, dressed in civilian clothes, approached him.

Unfortunately for Carlos, he was also wearing a white T-shirt.

The San Antonio Police Department says the undercover officer thought Carlos looked like a suspect, who was apparently wearing the same color shirt, who’d just ditched his car at a nearby restaurant and fled police on foot.

According to a lawsuit Carlos later filed against the department, the officer and at least two others who soon joined him in beating and kicking Carlos, at one point jumping on his back and neck with their knees. The undercover officer later said he used force because Carlos wouldn’t obey orders; Carlos says the cop just wouldn’t listen to him.

Carlos’ back pain after the encounter was so bad that 18 months later doctors recommended back surgery. Complications during the operation left him nearly paralyzed.

After a months-long U.S. Department of Justice investigation into the incident, the feds announced earlier this month that the three officers involved won’t face federal charges. In a statement, U.S. Attorney Richard Durbin said, “The investigation did not develop sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that police officers knowingly and willfully used excessive force to deprive Mr. Carlos of his civil rights.”

The three officers were named in a federal civil rights lawsuit Carlos filed against the department earlier this year. One, an undercover SAPD officer assigned to a local multiagency drug trafficking task force, is listed only as “Detective John Doe” (SAPD won’t identify him due to his undercover work). The other two are SWAT officers identified as Carlos Chavez and Virgilo Gonzalez.

In his lawsuit, Carlos claims the officers involved in the chase didn’t communicate with each other or follow proper protocol to make they even had the right guy when they stopped Carlos. The suit also claims the department has inadequate training, policies and supervision, leading to such cases of excessive force. “Defendants Chavez, Gonzalez, and Detective John Doe are liable to Plaintiff because they knowingly and intentionally, or with reckless disregard for the truth, brutally assaulted Plaintiff without any reasonable suspicion that a crime had been committed or that Plaintiff was actually engaging in a crime,” the lawsuit alleges. “It is not illegal to wear a white T-shirt.”

San Antonio police chief William McManus previously told reporters that the officers involved in beating Carlos got five-day suspensions.

Which doesn’t mean they actually missed any work. Under the department’s disciplinary rules, rules the local police union refused to change in recent contract negotiations with the city, the officers simply gave up some leave time they’d accrued so they could remain on duty despite the suspension.

In a new video for a super PAC supporting Hillary Clinton, a former official with the consumer protection division of the state attorney general’s office outlined his team’s multi million dollar fraud case against Trump University, which he alleges was “punted” for political reasons when it reached the highest levels of the Texas Attorney General’s Office under nowGov. Greg Abbott.

In the video, which was released last week, John Owens doubles down on comments he made to reporters earlier this summer, saying that a seven month investigation by his office in 2009 determined that Trump U was “violating the law in so many ways.” Owens says his division recommended that the state file a lawsuit against Trump U for engaging in “false, misleading and deceptive practices and acts” and even recommended that the state hold Donald Trump personally liable for duping Texas consumers, saying Trump approved the marketing and course materials and even filmed video ads asking people to join the get-rich-quick scheme.

“The entire consumer protection division of the Texas Attorney General’s Office recommended to Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott that this suit be filed,” Owens says in the new video. “And they punted, they took a pass. There’s no question that the top echelon, the top people, Greg Abbott on down, basically declined to take action against Trump University or Donald Trump.” Owens says at the time, his office never had any problem getting the AG’s office to take action against similarly situated real estate scams.

“When we sent up the Donald Trump case, we didn’t get approval,” he says in the video. “It was politics.”

Owens’ allegations first raised eyebrows in June when he released internal records related to his office’s investigation into the now-defunct real estate program. According to Owens, rather than filing a lawsuit or pressuring Trump U to pay back the millions of dollars Texans spent on what his investigation called “dubious real estate investment strategies,” the AG’s office under Abbott dropped the case and let Trump U quietly leave the state. Years later, Donald Trump would donate some $35,000 to Abbott’s gubernatorial

campaign, the only major donation he’d made to a Texas politician in years.

It’s still not clear why exactly the case against Trump U was killed or who ultimately made the final call to nix any lawsuit against or settlement with the company. The governor’s office has denied that Trump’s donation to his campaign had anything to do with the decision. Last week an Abbott spokesman told the Houston Chronicle that Owens’ comments are “the ranting of an overtly partisan Hillary supporter, who has changed his story.” This summer, after Owens released records from the case, a former AG official fell on the sword and told reporters that he’d personally decided to drop the case and hadn’t even discussed it with Abbott before making the call.

The case got even curious-er when current state Attorney General Ken Paxton, not one to miss out on a scandal, threatened legal action against Owens for discussing the case, sending him a cease and desist letter claiming he’d broken “several state laws” by going public with his story.

It’s obvious why Democrats have latched on to the rocky history of Trump U as a campaign issue. The Texas case has been compared to another in Florida, where that state’s attorney general, Pam Bondi, backed out of a similar legal case against Trump U after not long before the Donald J. Trump foundation donated $25,000 to a political fundraising committee that supported her re-election bid (Democrats have called for a federal probe into the matter).

Abbott’s office, meanwhile, continues to write off Owens’ allegations as pure partisan politics. In a statement to reporters last week, the governor’s spokesman declared, “Hillary Clinton has lied about her emails, she has lied about Benghazi, she has lied about her health and now she is lying about Greg Abbott.”

Still, Owens’ allegations underscore one lingering question nobody at the governor’s or AG’s office has really answered: Why did Texas let Trump U off the hook without consequence, even after a state investigation determined it had scammed Texas taxpayers out of millions of dollars with a real estate scheme other state attorneys general have called “straight-up fraud”?

It’s not easy being a politically-opposed couple, especially this election season

E

arly one morning last month, Ryan Parsons was driving to his job as a cook at a Boerne restaurant when he saw flashing lights in his rearview mirror. Assuming a police officer was pulling him over, the 37 year old switched lanes before noticing it was just a guy in a truck tailgating him on the highway.

As the truck sped past him, Ryan says the man started yelling out the window and brandished a handgun. Naturally, the encounter deeply upset the self-identified liberal gun-reform advocate.

When Ryan returned home that afternoon, he told his wife Lauren, 27, about the incident. Her response: “Well, the gun wasn’t pointing itself at you, was it?”

Ryan and his conservative, Second Amendment-loving wife are ideologically opposed on a number of fronts, like abortion (she’s pro-life, he’s pro-choice) or the Affordable Care Act (she hates Obamacare, he backs it).

When civil unrest broke out on the streets of Ferguson, Missouri in 2014 after Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, was shot to death by a white police officer, Lauren thought the military should intervene and declare martial law.

Ryan called her a racist for the day.

Then there’s this year’s presidential election, a race many pundits keep calling one of the most divisive ever. It’s been a polarizing one at the Parsons household with Ryan, a lifelong Democrat, supporting former U.S. Secretary

of State Hillary Clinton while Lauren, a staunch Republican, says she’ll vote for real estate mogul and former reality TV star turned GOP nominee Donald Trump.

While opposites might attract, such interpolitical marriages aren’t exactly all that common. One 2016 survey by the statistics and polling website FiveThirtyEight.com found that only 10 percent of married couples consist of Democrat-Republican pairs. That might be because, for most people, political ideology is a key part of their identity. When couples like the Parsons marry, they have to find a way to operate around their disagreements and connect at a core level.

“If your spouse is not agreeing with you, part of your brain could be going, ‘Wait, they don’t even know who I am. They’re rejecting something that is a part of me,’” said Dr. Becky Davenport, owner and director of San Antonio-based Institute for Couple and Family Enhancement. “Maintaining the quality of the relationship has to be the priority over political theater.”

Ryan and Lauren have been married for a year and a half. When they started dating in 2013, politics never came up in their conversations, so neither really knew how different they were from one another until the 2016 election season got underway. Most of the jabs they took at each other came via comments on social media. In

July, when Lauren posted “#Trump2016” on Facebook, Ryan responded by posting a poop emoji and calling Trump supporters idiots.

“I think this election season has been a shock to both of us,” said Lauren, a U.S. Army veteran who works in oil field logistics. “We try not to argue about it when we’re out, but sometimes we do. But we usually keep it online.”

Even then, Ryan does his best not to debate the issues on social media – especially, he says, since Lauren’s confrontational enough, regularly posting pro-Trump stories and anti-Clinton memes just to get a rise out of people. Both can usually guess how the other feels about a certain trending topic and what kind of argument they might have about it, before they even get home from work.

“I told her she needed to lay off the political shit on Facebook,” Ryan said. “She did…for about a week.”

Despite their squabbles, the Parsons say they don’t want to let their clashing political views prevent them from enjoying their relationship.

November will come and go, Lauren says, and life will go on.

“I love him very much,” she said. “He’s been there for me through a lot of stuff in our few years together, so these political differences are nothing to us. It doesn’t dictate our marriage.”

Ryan interjected, half-jokingly: “But it may dictate the day.”

ngaged to be married, Ana Alicia Perez, a social worker, and Jeromy Aldridge, a Navy veteran and insurance agency owner, knew exactly what they were getting themselves into when they let their political bickering on Facebook evolve into online flirting. When they finally connected on the social-media website, Ana knew right away she “hated his guts.”

“I read through his profile and saw he was a conservative and was like, ‘Eww,’” Ana, 33, told the Current in an interview at the couple’s “Bipartisan Bungalow,” the nickname she and Jeromy gave their home on the city’s northwest side. “He would post things just to piss me off.

We were mortal enemies.”

This election, Ana, a Democrat, is voting for Clinton, while Jeromy, a Republican, is voting for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson. He says he just can’t vote for his party’s nominee this time around because Trump has a long history of “taking advantage of the little guy.”

While they dated, Ana, an active member of the San Antonio chapter of the National Organization of Women and Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio, says she was excited to share with Jeromy some of the things that were important to her — like advocating for LGBT rights. Jeromy had always been indifferent about the issue.

“I had never been vocal about the LGBT community at all,” Jeromy, 38, said. “I was more of a whatever-floats-your-boat-kind-of-guy. But being with Ana has showed me how a lot of the rhetoric and diatribe from people on the right is wrong.”

Such agreement between the two, however, is unusual. More often than not, the two litigate their positions like courtroom rivals on everything from labor unions and welfare programs to climate

change and mental health services. Ana admits she’ll sleep in another room when the debate gets too heated. Disputes notwithstanding, they’re both still looking forward to their politically-themed wedding late next year that will host guests split down partisan lines, including “boring business people” and “hippies and drag queens.”

“Love trumps everything,” Jeromy said. “We are both passionate people. We may say things to get under each other’s skin, but at the end of the day we try not to go to bed angry—at least I do.”

eleste and Dave Tidwell hope they don’t kill each other before Election Day. Happily married for 16 years, their support for different presidential candidates this year has ratcheted up the friction.

“Right now, it’s his goal is to make me miserable,” Celeste, 48, told the Current. “All the information and numbers he gives me come from ghostly graphs he conjures up in his head. He’s always wrong.”

Seated next to each other at their dining room table, Celeste, a stay-at-home-mom who ran unsuccessfully in 2013 and 2015 for San Antonio’s District 10 City Council seat, and Dave, a prison contractor who wants to see Trump in the White House, start to raise their voices when politics comes up. Portland, their 16-yearold daughter, just sits in the living room watching TV as the conversation gets more and more intense.

“Our ethics and values are not the same,” Dave, 48, said. “It creates problems because the children get confused as to what they should be doing.”

Determined that his kids learn accountability and responsibility, Dave preaches autonomy whenever he can. He believes following his conservative principles will put them on a path to a better life. Celeste shoots daggers from her eyes, accusing Dave of brainwashing their 12-year-old son.

“I think the biggest problem I have is that he tends to stereotype everyone,” Celeste said. “It’s offensive when he tells the kids that all liberals want is a handout, so I have to correct it.”

Still, Dave admits he doesn’t want his wife to change. Even if he could snap his fingers and turn Celeste into a Republican, he wouldn’t do it.

“I love her for who she is and I like the fight,” he said. “We’re two very strong people. I’m never going to change her mind, but that’s OK.” As the interview winds down, Portland walks over to the table. She’s used to her parents arguing when touchy subjects like immigration reform come up or when she tattles on her dad because he’s watching Fox News, but she takes it all in stride.

“Just to let you know,” she says smiling, “I’m a Bernie supporter.”

‘Objectives’

◀ If you’re not familiar with the Baroque music of 17th-century Spain and Mexico, well, that’s kind of the point of Los Tonos Humanos. For the past decade, the Mexican trio has made it their mission to revive these largely forgotten sounds.

This aim extends beyond sheet music; the band utilizes a collection of Renaissance-era flutes, lutes and guitarrilla (a prototype to the modern guitar) along with soprano Elisa Ávaros’ skill at running those otherworldly Baroque scales to capture the sound of the era. More importantly, Los Tonos Humanos are up to more than Baroque cosplay. Their ear for classic works of the era and ability to connect them to modern sounds allows their performances to transcend mere historical exercise and capture something much more mysterious, engaging and beautiful. ▶ The artistically inclined youngsters of the awardwinning local nonprofit SAY Sí put a gender-neutral spin on National Hispanic Heritage Month with the latest edition of “Cuentos y Culturas.” Constructed as “an artistic platform for student-artists to explore their origins,” the annual exhibition tasked participants of the middle school Working Artists & Mentors (WAM) program with sharing personal narratives in a format inspired by Maya codices — folded books filled with hieroglyphics and printed on cloth made from inner tree bark. Under the guidance of local photographer Mark Greenberg, students enrolled in the youth development program’s Media Arts Studio (MAS) photographed and wrote about Latinx individuals who’ve made an impact on their lives. Rounding out the “Latinx Heritage Month” offerings, the ALAS Youth Theatre Company’s multimedia production Napako creatively addresses the “history, geography, and significance of the Blue Hole” — a spring often cited as the starting point of the San Antonio River. ▶ Devised as a means to “explore the varied experiences and cultures of Latinxs, immigrants, women and LGBT individuals through accessible teatro” Teatro Audaz San Antonio officially launches this weekend with a trio of events held in observance of Hispanic Heritage Month. Dubbed “Nuestras Voces: Our Voices,” the program kicks off Thursday with a presentation of The Panza Dialogues, a performance compiling women’s stories surrounding “that roll of belly we all try to hide.” Developed by Virginia Grise and Irma Mayorga with contributions from Bárbara Renaud-González, Petra A. The website elaborates on this mission: “Through collaborations with photographers, journalists educators, and businesses, we are specifically [seeking] to heighten the rich and diverse photography community in the San Antonio and Austin corridor.” With opportunities for submission to this show open until just last week, it is evident that the event’s creative directors — Josh Huskin, Scott Ball and Shannon Gowen — took extra care to be as inclusive as possible. Based in New York City, Parsons Dance is internationally renowned for pushing the envelope of modern dance while staging performances that engage diverse audiences. Gary Sweeney Interviews Ethel Shipton San Antonio artist Ethel Shipton is one of our most driven, talented and ubiquitous resources.

She has worked at and with almost all of the museums, galleries and architectural firms in the city, and is currently the production manager for Luminaria. Born and raised in Laredo, Ethel graduated from the University of Texas, hung around Austin until she moved to Mexico City for a stint, and eventually ended up here, living at the unofficial art compound in Southtown. She and her husband, the artist Nate Cassie, make up one of San Antonio’s most dynamic power duos. He’s from Wisconsin, she’s from Laredo, and they refer to themselves as “Bean and Cheese.”

Do you remember your first exposure to art? My first exposure, in many ways, was going through the markets in Nuevo Laredo and looking at all the handmade objects, the changing of the objects from season to season, and the diversity of materials — from metals to ceramics to glass works to textiles. My first exposure to art history was a survey book with large color plates of all the masters. My sibling and I would look through that book over and over again at my grandmother’s house. We were around the ages of 7 to 10 years old.

What was it like growing up in Laredo?

Growing up in Laredo was great because you lived in a place where everyone was connected in some way. You were either related or your parents or grandparents had gone to school together. You lived on an open border between Mexico and the U.S., where you lived between two countries, two cultures and two worlds.

Was there a moment or an artwork that made you decide you wanted to be an artist? I don’t know if there was one given moment ...

What’s your work schedule like? My work schedule is not rigid, meaning that I often work with ideas that I carry around for weeks or months.

Do you agonize over your pieces, or do your ideas flow out of you?

Well, I start with an idea that I need to have sit for a while, to see and think about all the angles ... So I may carry the idea around in my head for months and sometimes years. And then, other times, the idea comes quickly and certainly.

I’m not a big fan of humor in art. Okay, maybe I am. Do you find some challenges in finding an audience for humor? I don’t worry about audience — I just [create] work that allows one to see the world the way I do.

I suppose the first time I thought it was possible to live as an artist was after getting into to a show at MexicArte [in Austin]. I think I was 19 or 20.

Have you ever taught? I’ve been involved in

Who were some of your early influences?

[education] programs with Artpace and Fox Tech, which I loved doing, but I haven’t done any real teaching.

One of my very early influences as a small child was my maternal grandmother, who was a teacher. She was also able to reupholster furniture, sew you a shirt and teach you how to make a hand-sewn doll. As for some of my early fine-art influences, I was looking at Cy Twombly and Hans Hofman.

If you were asked to describe your current work to someone, what would you tell them? My work today often deals with

the idea of having just a minute to hold in your hand and what that might look like.

If you could change the gallery system, how would you do it? Wow ... not sure how to change it. But it would be cool to work with a curator on a project that is then partnered with a gallery. I don’t think this scenario would change the market necessarily but [it might] open up the market.

What advice would you give to struggling young artists? Work hard, have fun and try not to hurt anyone. Say yes more than you say no. And get involved in your community — it often leads you to a bigger world.

If you could own any piece of art, what would it be? This is a hard question — one is not enough. But the list includes [works by] Modigliani, Thomas Hart Benton, Cornelia Parker, Mark Bradford and Luis Jiménez, to name a few.

You’re married to another accomplished local artist. Has there ever been any competition? Do you seek advice about each other’s work? We don’t compete with one

another; we are truly happy for one another when one of us has some success. I mean, if Nate gets a grant or a residency — that just means I get to go on the ride too.

As for advice, we usually only seek each other’s advice on the structure or mechanics of a piece. We work pretty separately, as far as concepts and ideas ... We collaborate on our Vacancy Projects (vacancy-sa.org), which has been a series of interventions — one dayshows or events in empty spaces throughout the city.

We’ve had about 11 of these over the past five years and our most recent was during last year’s Chalk it Up, featuring works by 10 previous Artpace residents.

The Hollars wants to have its cake and decorate it too.

The second directorial effort of John Krasinski, best known for playing Jim Halpert in The Office, has the makings of a tasty dramedy about two brothers and their parents, but after adding no less than a dozen often unfunny subplots featuring a wife, an ex-wife, an exfiancée, children, a doctor, a nurse and even a youth minister, the film collapses like a poorly prepared soufflé. The recipe – particularly the acting ingredients of Richard Jenkins and Margo Martindale – might have looked good on paper, but the finished concoction is badly overcooked and saccharine.

Krasinski plays John Hollar, a 30-something graphic novelist who returns to his small hometown after his mother is diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Facing an uncertain career and the imminent arrival of a baby with his girlfriend, played by Anna Kendrick, his life is made even more complicated by his mom’s health scare, his dad’s pending

bankruptcy, his brother’s stalking of his ex-wife and who plays Jason, a nurse caring for Mrs. Hollar. his own ex-fiancée’s inappropriate advances. A noodle car for Ming’s Thing, Jamaica Jamaica is moving and Jason Dady’s new tapas place

> Ming’s Thing, the pan-Asian purveyor of all things delicious at the Pearl Farmers Market, is opening a noodle bar just a few steps away from its commercial kitchen.

First launched in early 2012 at the Quarry Ranchers & Farmers Market (RIP), Ming’s Thing is a market staple because of its signature sloppy joe steamed buns, spicy noodle dishes, and recently added, Hong Kong waffles.

They also serve lunch Wednesday through Friday and prepare all catering orders inside a wee box car found at The Yard on McCullough.

The noodle bar, still tentatively unnamed, will feature more of chef-owner Ming Qian’s favorite Chinese snacks inside a tiny space. The restaurant will be outfi tted with bar seating, designed by French and Michigan, inside and outside on the patio to accommodate 24-30 diners. Qian will serve some market mainstays while adding more noodles (rice and sweet potato were mentioned along with a spicy broth, a coconut Thai base and a plain base for the spiceaverse set). She also mentioned Chinese tapas such as pig ears and century eggs and a steamed bun banh mi are also in the works. The eatery will open for lunch and dinner, and will serve beer and wine.

Qian was hesitant to give a date for opening, but said she’s hoping for a mid-October launch.

> Big changes are coming for Jamaica Jamaica Cuisine, one of the handful of Jamaican eateries in San Antonio. The shop, which opened five years ago at 2011 Austin Hwy., will move to a new location further south at 2026 Austin Hwy. Their last day of service at the current location was Saturday, September 10. Owner Dee Gordon shared that the new location will be 4,000 square-feet as compared to the 1,500 square feet in the current space.

“This is more aligned with the original plan and dream we had in mind, but we opened with our own money so it took some time,” Gordon said over the phone.

The new location will allow them room to expand their kitchen and add a few more menu items including a handful of soul food dishes (she mentioned mac n’ cheese, collard greens and barbecue jerk chicken). The new spot will also have room for a huge bar and a meeting room for 50 people. Gordon mentioned she’ll also be adding nightlife to the mix with karaoke on Thursday nights, R&B and reggae on Friday and Saturday nights and a Sunday Jazz brunch.

Barring any construction woes, Gordon hopes to reopen Jamaica Jamaica Cuisine on October 1.

> Chef Jason Dady is at it again. This time, he’s getting a little nostalgic with it as he opens The Bin Tapas Bar inside the former home of Bakery Lorraine this week.

Modeled after the old Bin 555 at Artisans Alley, which he opened in 2006 and later closed to make way for Umai Mi, which is currently Tre Enoteca, The Bin Tapas Bar will feature throwback faves from Bin’s original menu. Fans of Bin can expect to fi nd Serrano-wrapped blue cheese dates, grilled cheese sandwiches, patatas bravas, pan tomate and new items including tortilla Española, stuffed piquillo peppers, Spanish octopus. Come weekends, guests will also be able to choose from whole pig roasts and large-format paellas.

The restaurant will also include a full bar so stay tuned for an extensive gin and tonic program and mojitos, porron service and sangrias.

According to a press release sent out by Dady, the chef is hoping to “fill the heart of San Antonio with the fiery spirit of old town Barrio Gotico in Barcelona, Spain.”

The Bin Tapas Bar will open 3-11 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and 3 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.

San Antonio has another burger master on the rise, and this one is entirely self-taught.

Christian Hawx, the 24-year old owner of Hawx Burger Bar and Electro Lounge on Vance Jackson Road, previously worked four jobs simultaneously to support his self-started, struggling insurance company. The persistence paid off. So much so, that he was able to sell the company at a profit and open a restaurant this past February that is now growing a rapt audience for its burgers, cocktails and beer.

Set in an unassuming beer-garden style establishment about a mile inside Loop 410, Hawx’s place, during the day, appears to be your typical, quiet (sometimes empty — hey, they’re still relatively new) wood-paneled burger joint and sports bar. However, on weekend nights, the DJs and lasers come out, tables are removed for dancing and heavy bass beats blast through the summer night’s breeze.

So how exactly does an insurance broker become a restaurateur? Pretty much by accident. Hawx was entertaining friends one night, cooking dinner. He made burgers. They raved. He listened.

“I always was interested in how you make things from scratch,” says Hawx, on why he thinks his burgers stand out.

That curiosity led him to grind the meat himself, mix the spices by hand and play around with ingredients and fl avors.

His meticulousness shows, with an Angus chuck burger that’s savory and juicy (“Order it medium or medium-well for optimum flavors,” suggests Hawx.).

Want cheese? You’ll get two slices, not one — handsliced, at that. The veggies? They’re fresh from local area farmers and all hand-sliced in-house, as well. And you’ll find those veggies on the bottom of the burger, not the top, so they keep the bottom bun from getting soggy. Yeah, he thought of that, too, or as he puts it, “There’s a method to my madness.”

And then there are the buns. Oh, those buns.

When told that the presentation of his burgers is what first attracted our attention, he points out that his buns are made from scratch in the kitchen daily. You’ll find two types on the menu – one is a shiny, fluffy brioche topped with both white and black sesame seeds, well buttered and delicious. The other is a whole-wheat brioche variety, complete with a smattering of toasted oats on top, also impeccably slathered with butter.

The establishment boasts 12 different burgers accompaniments, too. There’s the Blue Moonand sandwiches, each with its own unique blend of battered onion rings, fried pickles and something flavorful ingredients and toppings. We picked our favorite Oktoberfest brews when they came on shelves, and a handful of joints have already started celebrating the world’s largest volkfest, a 16-day shindig for all things beer. Of course, the celebrations will continue throughout the next month and a half because who doesn’t like a good Marzenstyle brew? Pencil in these shindigs for your fill of brats and sauerkraut.

“I’m so happy to see people here at last,” said Chris Hill.

Hill, the owner of downtown cocktail den The Esquire Tavern, was referring to the long-awaited opening of Downstairs, the cave-like new bar beneath The Esquire. Accessible from inside the venerable tavern and up a few steps from the River Walk, Downstairs is identified only by a discreet sign on that riverside door.

The atmospheric space is split by a screened corridor and minimally lit mostly by decorative fixtures from Isaac Maxwell Metals (now owned by Mike Casey). The brightest focus of attention is the bar — and here it’s a backdrop of bottles, lots of bottles, that is highlighted.

“I think we’ll develop our own little following,” said Hill, who went on to add that “there’s not a lot of swank on the river.” This, then, is his stab at providing some. Up to you to decide if the lighted vignettes of odd, stuffed fish that line the perimeter walls are swanky. But they are without doubt distinctive. And so, too is the menu of both drinks and snacks, all, according to Hill, at a “just slightly higher price point than upstairs.”

bar was putting out four cocktails: a martini, a daiquiri, and two custom creations — the Fuck Monsanto (with non-GMO bourbon), and the Batman of Mexico with “high-proof and batfriendly” tequila (bats are prime agave pollinators, btw). Both of these were good. As upstairs, the booze list is heavy in tequila and mezcal, but there is more emphasis on sherries, and non knee-jerk sparkling wines. “It’s a little more wine-forward down here,” mentioned Hill. It’s also got what must be the longest list of ciders in town; there are 12, and I look forward to sampling them all.

The Downstairs food menu is a simple one, focused on fresh oysters, charcuterie and cheeses. Chef Brooke Smith is already curing and pickling many items on the over-stuffed charc board. A curing room, not yet totally ready, will allow her to do even more in house, she says. The eventual goal is to have almost everything but the cheeses made right there.

“Descend to a new level,” is the Downstairs tagline. Maybe it’s possible to ascend to new heights at the same time. Get your ass down there and find out.

> On September 24, 1996, the then-newly-beloved, post-grunge band Weezer released Pinkerton, the highly-anticipated follow up to its brilliant (and universally lauded) self-titled debut (aka the Blue album).

The band’s second record, which wasn’t very wellreceived at the time, was, in terms of sound, a flat-out ambitious and tortuously emotional departure from the sunny, polished, harmony-laden, pop-rock precision of the Blue album. With his sails as taut with confidence as they could ever be, frontman and songwriter Rivers Cuomo set the controls for the heart of his insecurities/ neuroses. Which is to say: the album is as musically impressive (and dynamic, even visceral) as it is emotionally wrenching.

Sonically and lyrically, there’s an urgency, a rawness, a seething depth to Pinkerton, absent from the band’s other work before or since, which certainly served to alienate fans expecting a repeat of its predecessor’s winking pop-rock sheen. It’s not that Weezer doesn’t have any fun on Pinkerton, it’s just that there’s a jaded sense of self-doubt, hopelessness, and sarcasm that replaces the comparative innocence of the Blue album.

In this way, Pinkerton represents Cuomo’s coming to self-awareness and, simultaneously, his recoiling from that awareness. This makes perfect psychological sense and, to some degree, has contributed to Pinkerton’s reevaluation over the years as a classic.

We can all relate. When you are finally able to see yourself clearly—and to foil what you see against how others see you—it’s all too common to react with at least mild horror. (Insert shruggie emoji.)

SOUND CITY Our best bets for the 2016 San Antonio Music Showcase KELSEY VALADEZ

San Anto sound takes over the city on Saturday with this year’s San Antonio Music Showcase, with the best local talent playing shows throughout the night from the Saint Mary’s Strip down to South Flores.

With more than 60 bands and DJs performing across a dozen stages, there’s a lot to see. Here’s our rundown of some of the acts you can’t miss: AMEA – MIDNIGHT, PHANTOM ROOM You can get high off of Amea. Her voice veers in and out of ethereal, all while draped over slow synth and soft bass. ” Her tone bounces between breathy and authoritative, the kind of voice that takes you on a journey through the track, filled with ups and downs. It’s all backed up, of course, by some chilled out R&B in the vein of Active Child or James Blake. Catch Amea’s dreamworld at the Phantom Room’s Hip-Hop/R&B night.

DANCE LIKE ROBOTS – 1AM, LIMELIGHT Dancing? And robots? Already interested. Sure, they have a funny name, but Dance Like Robots take you on a slow burn. There are droning introductions, repeated melodic motifs that bend and twist, and mellowed-out interludes. The whole time, they’re building, with drums that veer from charging to clangy and cacophonous. Live, it all builds into a loud a wash of sound that captivates any audience.

BÚHO – MIDNIGHT, BOTTOM BRACKET SOCIAL CLUB Búho is alive – and all this time we thought San Antonio’s beloved noise rockers might be done. This on again off again favorite of ours sounds kind of like a ballad to punk, or love letter to noise rock, depending on which song you catch. We haven’t really seen the band this active since they re-released and played a series of shows promoting Beggar’s Teeth in 2013. Their songs and live shows are explosive, with crisp, wild drum patterns, walls of guitar noise and even the occasional vocal chanting.

Rock out, catchup with Búho, and try to convince them to keep making and playing music this time around.

ANTIQUE SUNLIGHT – 11PM, AMP ROOM Antique Sunlight’s blend of psychedelic and gypsy rock carries just enough bounce and swagger to keep things lively late into the night. When they’ve hit a groove, they deliver the kind of drawling, honkey tonk that’ll get people stomping – all tinged with ample haze and a lonely, Western feel.

MICHAEL J AND THE FOXES – 1AM, AMP ROOM Side project turned fan-favorite Michael J. and the Foxes, by Michael Carrillo of Deer Vibes, tells stories with a sad, folksy brand of bluegrass goodness. Joined by Jordan McCarthy, Aaron Lee and Rob Fernandez, Mikey Vibes takes you on a melodramatic journey through Facebook posts and diary entries. Whether it’s total sad-boy caricature or part of Carrillo’s true self, his heartbroken laments are both entertaining and endearing.

JUANITO CASTILLO – 10PM, SQUEEZEBOX To simply call Juanito Castillo a master accordion player would actually undermine his remarkable skill and importance to San Antonio music. He’s the protege of legendary musician Esteban “Steve” Jordan, the so-called “Hendrix of the accordion.” In many ways, Castillo carries on Jordan’s legacy. The young, blind musician who drummed for Jordan in his final years actually plays some 14 instruments -- proficiently. Jordan even once reportedly said that “Juanito is the only one who gets near to what I was able to do as a player.”

THE FOREIGN ARM – 11PM, VENTURA The Foreign Arm plays music that will make you feel good. Whether it’s on slower violin-tinged jams like “Back Rooms” or catchy uptempo tunes like “Do it Right,” it’s harmony-filled music that makes you want to move your body -- neo-soul music at its best. The Foreign Arm is made of Nicholas Blevins, Andrea Vocab Sanderson, George Garza Jr., Jeff Palacios, Darian Thomas, Jorge Aguilar, and Omar Rosel — almost all members of other SA bands. While each instrument and voice remains unique and distinct, the ensemble gels with an empowering and uplifting sound.

THE SKAJECTS – (TBD) THE MIX In case you miss the Lost Project at High Wire Arts, you can catch their hybrid band The Skajects. Members of Young Costello and Spies Like Us join The Lost Project to play the latter’s songs, but this time with horns (so think Lost Project with a horn section). The decision was made, according to guitarist/ vocalist Jason David Valdez, out of the need to kill the Lost Project’s growing reputation as a ska band. What started as “kind of a joke,” says Valdez, has now turned into an actual ska band. “If people think we’re gonna be a ska band, we should have horns,” he says. The Lost Project came back from tour on August 28, and have been working on Skajects ever since. They will, appropriately, be playing the multi genre night at the Mix. MOCKINGBIRD EXPRESS – 10PM, FAUST TAVERN Local psych trio Mockingbird Express is ready to take you on a trip. Part psychedelic blues and part experimental rock and roll, think Jimi Hendrix with a touch of San Anto.

Made of bassist Josh Borchardt (Crown, Bright Like the Sun,) drummer Kory Cook (the Boom, Dark Planes,) and guitarist/vocalist Marc Smith (Creatura, Shiva’s Medicine Cabinet), the band ranges from chilled out to straight up rock and roll. Smith experiments with a range of guitar effects, and on some songs the drumming starts to sound almost primal as Smith repeats lines like, “Remember that Earth is where you’re from… but where you going?” Take us back to Earth, Mockingbird.

VERISIMILITUDE – 11PM, LIMELIGHT Brothers Dakota and Zach Appelbaum are joined by Feliza Salazar on drums to produce a sound that takes you far away.

Salazar’s intricate drum beats keep pace while Zach (guitar) and Dakota (bass) play off each other, sometimes in an almost call and response-like method. Other times, they just get lost in sounds the blend into each other.

Natural Child Natural Child is unapologetic. No, not like an in-your-face metal band. They don’t throw down political messages with their lyrics. They just speak frankly.

These dudes have a nonchalant, laidback and groovy sound, with equally lackadaisical lyrics like, “Sure is nice to have a place to sit / You can leave me alone while I’m taking a shit.” All the while, you’re still swaying along to music that’s as nonchalant as their words. Whatever strange, name-drop hybrid you want to compare them to (Dylan, Stones, Stooges, and even Willie, to name a handful), they couldn’t care less. Rich Robinson Sure, we were sad when brothers Chris and Rich Robinson announced

last year that the Black Crowes were finally, officially dead after nearly three decades. Luckily, Rich Robinson’s solo project remains. Rich’s solo work is bluesy and layered and distinct from his sound with the Black Crowes. We’ll always miss the seminal blues rock band. But at least with solo projects like this (and the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, the band the other Robinson formed while on hiatus from the Crowes), it’ll sorta feel like they never left us. 7pm, $36.50-$80, The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts 100 Auditorium Circle ▲ Alice in Chains Alice in Chains’ notable sound perfectly rides that line between early 1990s grunge rock and straight-up metal. Listed by many as one of the greatest hard rock acts of all time, the band sputtered on and off throughout the 90s. The band regrouped in the mid 2000s after drug abuse ultimately killed original singer Layne Staley, leading to a number of new recordings. John Sebastian John Sebastian penned a number of hits for the hippie heyday folk group The Lovin’ Spoonful before going solo in the late 1960s. What accounts for my growing financial luck? I mean besides the fact that I have been steadily improving my skills as an oracle and writer? I suspect it may in part have to do with my determination to cultivate generosity.

As I’ve become better at expressing compassion and bestowing blessings, money has flowed to me in greater abundance. Would this strategy work for you? The coming weeks and months will be a good time to experiment.

LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): Here’s my translation of a passage from the ancient Gospel of Thomas, a gnostic text about the teachings of Jesus: “If you do not awaken and develop the potential talents that lie within you, they will damage you.
