THE VOTERS GOT IT RIGHT Leticia Van de Putte endorses Ivy Taylor in mayor’s race.

Fresh off her loss in the long-shot race for Texas Lieutenant Governor, longtime state lawmaker Leticia Van de Putte unexpectedly jumped into the crowded field of candidates hoping to be San Antonio mayor last year.

Her entrance immediately disrupted the fi eld, splintering the voting block that had been seen as a dead lock for Mike Villarreal, another former state lawmaker who’d announced early on that he’d challenge Ivy Taylor, then an interim mayor who’d reneged on her promise not to seek a full, elected term.

As many had expected, Van de Putte’s local star power sucked up the oxygen in the crowded field of challengers. By the time she made it to a runoff with Taylor, things, as often happens in politics, got ugly. At the end of one Texas Public Radio debate, when the strange way Taylor’s husband’s handled a curious east side shooting came up, Taylor was caught on camera refusing to shake Van de Putte’s hand. A shocked Van de Putte responded by mouthing, “Wow.” Which is why some might be surprised that last week, at a private event to support Taylor’s run for a second full term, Van de Putte introduced the mayor this way: “The voters got it right.” A consultant who worked on Van de Putte’s mayoral race (who, word has it, is now working for Taylor’s campaign) tweeted a photo of the two former rivals with the quote, which Taylor then shared with her followers, adding that she was “incredibly grateful and humbled” by Van de Putte’s support.

In a phone interview last week, Van de Putte said she’s decided to officially endorse Taylor because of the mayor’s many accomplishments within her first term — particularly, she said, the brokering of a police union contract that council passed earlier this month, ending years of legal

Under the plea deal he struck with Guadalupe County prosecutors, Taylor E. Kregear could have been sentenced to a maximum of 12 years in prison for two second degree felony counts of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl back in 2014.

Instead, court records show, state District Judge W. C. “Bud” Kirkendall sentenced Kregear to just 30 days in jail. He’ll also be on probation for 10 years, have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, and pay a $1,000 fine. Kirkendall, when reached by phone, told the Current the state’s code of judicial conduct bars him from publicly discussing the case or his sentencing of Kregear.

But some officials are clearly disappointed in the fact that Kregear will serve no prison time. In comments to the San Antonio Express-News, which first reported on the case, Guadalupe County Sheriff Arnold Zwicke alluded to the case of Stanford University rapist Brock Turner, who was released from jail this month after serving just three months behind bars for sexual assault. “I’m disappointed in the fact that we have Texas judges thinking like California judges,” Zwicke told the paper.

(Van de Putte, when talking about the contract, even said that Taylor was “more generous than I would have been” in negotiating the final terms of the contract.)

Van de Putte acknowledged that last year’s race was “a painful defeat for me personally,” but says that she’s been able to work with Taylor since the election and is confident in her leadership. As for how the two have gotten past the acrimony that rankled the end of the last mayoral campaign, Van de Putte put it this way: “Grownups know that a lot of things are said and done in a campaign. ... Come on, Barack Obama asked Hillary Clinton to be Secretary of State. We’re grownups. How many times in business do you have adversaries that become your business partners? Politics is no different. You look at what your end goals are.”

came forward after discovering sexually-charged text messages between his 16-year-old daughter and Kregear, who was then a 28-year-old friend of the family.

When the father confronted his daughter, Cox said, she claimed Kregear had forced himself on her while he was staying at the house. An indictment in the case accuses Kregear of penetrating the girl with his mouth and finger.

When confronted, Cox said, Kregear confessed but insisted the encounter was consensual. He also said he didn’t know it was illegal in Texas for a 28-yearold man to have sex with a 16-year-old girl (the age of consent in Texas is 17). Cox told us the case sent to prosecutors was solid. “Not only did we have a confession, we had physical evidence as well as the victim’s statement that supported what had happened,” he said. “It pretty much had a bow wrapped around it.”

When we reached Warren Wolf, Kregear’s defense attorney, by phone last week, he told us that any comparison to the light sentence in the Brock Turner case is unfair. “Every case is different,” he said. “You can’t compare one to the other.” Wolf stressed the fact that one condition of Kregear’s plea deal is that he register as a sex offender for the rest of its life; he compared those lifetime restrictions to “living in a leper colony.” He also said that everywhere else Kregear has

lived, the age of consent was 16, hence his confusion.

“The judge heard everything that there was, made a call, and that’s what our system is about,” Wolf said.

“To say that he got off light is a misunderstanding.”

Meanwhile Kregear himself, in a jailhouse interview with the Express-News, insisted, “I didn’t force myself on her,” but that the sexual encounter with a teenager was “still my mistake.” He was released from jail on Friday after receiving credit for good behavior.

Cibolo Police Chief Cox wouldn’t comment on whether he felt Kregear’s light jail sentence was appropriate considering the crime. He did, however, add this: “We always desire that justice be done for the victim. And in this case, I don’t know that’s what happened because the family is clearly not pleased with the outcome.”

Ahead of a public hearing next week over a new Mexican American Studies textbook the state is considering teaching in Texas public schools, a group of scholars and professors last week issued a scathing 54-page report that calls the text “a prolific misrepresentation of facts.” The result, according to the analysis submitted to the State Board of Education on Tuesday, is “a polemic attempting to masquerade as a textbook” — one that scholars and critics fear could soon be taught to Texas schoolchildren.

The book, called Mexican American Heritage, raised eyebrows as soon as a draft was made public earlier this year. Scholars in the field insisted the book contained numerous factual inaccuracies and gross errors of interpretation, including passages that demonized the country’s long history of Chicano activism. (Chicanos, the textbook authors wrote, had “adopted a revolutionary narrative that opposed Western civilization and wanted to destroy this society.”) The book is

Donald Trump, the real estate mogul turned Republican presidential nominee who jumpstarted his campaign by calling Mexicans “rapists”, may have actually managed to accomplish something Democrats in Texas have been striving toward for decades: to turn the state, if not blue, at least purple.

In what has been a year of rollercoaster (and sometimes asinine) polls attempting to gauge public sentiment in a batshit political season, another dropped this week proving once again that 2016 is an election year unlike any other. According to the new Washington Post/Survey Monkey poll of the presidential race, the two top candidates are almost dead-even in Texas, something that in the past would have been unthinkable in a deep red state. The poll puts Hillary Clinton at 46 percent of the vote and Trump at 45 percent, with 9 percent of voters having no opinion.

When pollsters expanded the fi eld, Clinton and Trump tied in Texas with 40 percent each, while Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson got 11 percent and Green Partier Jill Stein got 3 percent (6 percent registered no opinion on that one).

The poll’s no-shit “analysis”: “Texas splits

the first Mexican American Studies text up for review by the State Board of Education since legislation was passed two years ago calling for the subject to be included in statewide curriculum for high school students.

It’s the only text up for review.

Since the proposed book was made public earlier this year, scholars and professors in the field have been racing to perform a top-down review of the text ahead of the state board’s public hearing on the matter in Austin this week, where the group was expected to present its findings.

Authored by an ad hoc committee of history, public policy, Mexican American Studies and education policy professors, Tuesday’s report to the board reveals problems with the book are deep-seated and go well beyond a few troublingly phrased passages and racist potshots.

The group’s report compiled more than 150 factual errors, “interpretative errors” and errors of omission that they say lead to a textbook that wrongly presents Mexican American

All of this, of course, seems shocking for a state that hasn’t seen a Democrat elected to statewide office for more than two decades. And while political analysts might downplay the significance of the poll (the pundit consensus: no, Texas probably won’t go to Clinton; yes, internet surveys/polls are inherently problematic), it does underscore Trump’s potential impact on Texas politics. While the huge GOP majority at the statehouse probably won’t be threatened, Democrats have said they hope to capitalize on Trump’s deep unpopularity in the state to make some gains at the Legislature. Perhaps the new poll is further sign that this could be their year.

Parts of the book, they write, reinforce a narrative that is “anti-Catholic, anti-Spanish, anti-Mexican, anti-Mexican American, and anti-immigrant.” The textbook authors, they say, present indigenous groups as “civilized” only if they behaved like Europeans; whitewash history by omitting uncomfortable or complicating facts; claim the U.S. Constitution was based on “JudeoChristian principles” (when, as noted by multiple constitutional scholars, it wasn’t); and even manage to botch basic definitions (like “mestizo” or “pantheism”).

The group held a press conference in the border city of Brownsville last week to announce the findings of their report outside Paredes Elementary School, which just so happens to be named after Mexican-American scholar Américo Paredes. Trinidad Gonzales, a history professor at South Texas College, says entire passages of the textbook were spun from “a web of racist assertions.”

Their menu is concise and contains all the staples, from pepperoni to a classic margherita. The cheese pizza is tantalizing and anything but basic, thanks to the whole cloves of garlic nestled atop cheese that’s just greasy enough. Mike Sohocki on his latest venture, Il Forno Chef, restaurateur, gardener, father, writer Mike Sohocki knows what San Antonians want. After leaving The Cove to open 1800-inspired Restaurant Gwendolyn, earning a James Beard Award nomination along the way, opening the city’s first noodle shop with Kimura and likely working on other secret projects, the chef opened what could be his best eatery to date. At Il Forno, the perfectly charred and blistered pies, topped with fresh, local, organic ingredients await. We talked with chef about his pizza philosophy and what makes a great pie.

So, why a pizza place? Ernie (Bradley) and I were having our

weekly meeting one day, talking as usual about multi-course fine dining with arcane preparations and odd ingredients, or about tonkotsu and tonkatsu and oyakodomburi and so on — and somebody said “Man ... wouldn’t it be nice to serve something we didn’t have to explain?” and somebody else blurted like a 4-yearold “Pizzaaaa!” And there was a long silence. And there was the gauntlet right there on the floor.

What are the biggest challenges in running an establishment like Il Forno? Convincing Americans that pizza is not American.

It’s supposed to be razor thin, and cooked at 700 degrees in a matter of seconds. It’s SUPPOSED to have black blisters. The ingredients also need to be thinly applied: if you pile 6 1/2 pounds of junk on a fat slab of dough, it won’t cook. American pizza — that fat, slovenly, light-colored mountain of sweated cheese and

bubbling grease on a swamp of gummy fleshy dough — is made possible only by electric deck ovens that cook at 400 degrees or even less.

AND IT’S WRONG. In a way, that’s the HARDEST food to make for people. When you serve a soup a la Vizcaina, or an aqua pazza or “tan-tan” ramen, criticism is limited to the very few people who have traveled or lived in southern Italy, Spain, Portugal, even China. But dare to serve a “pizza”, and every plumber and concrete worker in the union will be hammering on your counter saying “now let me tell YOU something about pizza.”

Stop FIGHTING tradition, damnit.

EMBRACE it. Sometimes I want to scream: Lay down your weapons and surrender!

Describe your personal ideal pizza? Any style, any toppings, what would you eat? I am a purist.

Eating is like prayer and I want my

church clean. I will bake myself a blank piece of dough until it is dark and crackly on both sides, slather it while steaming in extra virgin olive oil, and a sprinkle of salt.

What’s the best place in San Antonio, besides Il Forno, to get pizza? Why? Have you tried the pizza from that guy in the food truck park in Southtown (Sulla Strada Pizza)? All the right things are present — purely wood-burning oven, dough proofed for hours or even days, thin toppings, respectable color on the crust. Very impressive — and a food truck, no less!

What has been the most successful item since Il Forno’s opening?

Easily, the three-meat pizza.

Florio’s Pizza I admit for much of my youth, I was what one would call a pizza dunce. I had no concept of what true pizza was until sometime in my mid-20s, I “discovered” nirvana aka Florio’s Pizza. When you walk in, you are instantly transported to Times Square you have always envisioned in your mind’s eye. Giants, Jets, Yankees, Mets, and Rangers banners and posters plaster the walls. DON’T BE THAT GUY AT URBAN BRICKS PIZZA CO. Let me quote the Millennial bard, Aubrey Drake Graham, in saying “I’ve always been me I guess I know myself.”

I know I hate big menus. I know I hate a multitude of choices. I know to order efficiently at a quick-service restaurant. Because when it comes down to ordering your lunch or dinner at a place like Urban Bricks Pizza Co., there’s no time for existential crises.

If you’re not familiar with Urban Bricks Pizza Co., you will be soon enough. The San Antonio-based made-to-order pizza chain first opened at The Rim in 2015, followed it up with a sophomore store off Culebra Road in 2016 and will complete the trifecta with a third location opening off Potranco Road this October and there’s several more in the works throughout South Texas. Think Subway or Chipotle meets pizza and you’re there. Wood-burning ovens fire up personal-size pies in less than a couple of minutes and really, this should take about as long as a burrito or sandwich might, but often doesn’t.

During both my visits — once for lunch and another for dinner — I was sandwiched by patrons who willfully decided against making their lives easier by choosing one of Urban’s predesigned pies, such as the Aloha, margarita or Three Little Pigs.

Instead they chose between crusts (original, wheat or gluten free); sauce (red, spicy red, white, garlic olive oil); cheese (cheddar, gorgonzola, shredded mozzarella, ricotta, Parmesan, vegan cheese); proteins (chicken, Italian sausage, pepperoni, crumbled meatball, bacon, Canadian bacon, chorizo, kosher salami); veggies (more than 30) and drizzles (at least a dozen to choose from).

No, you’re not some pizza Picasso. This isn’t the time or place to R&D the perfect pizza. Please don’t choose a busy lunch hour to contemplate the merits of feta on your pie. You KNOW you don’t like bell peppers.

Be like Drake. Know yourself, know your pizza topping preferences, and then — only then — decide to treat yourself to Urban Bricks Pizza.

I have made many poor decisions in my life, and many of them were about food.

When I was 18, I ate Chunky’s Four Horseman Hamburger in the secondfastest time ever, after which I spent 12 hours puking every 30 minutes into a toilet, the unchewed globs of halfeaten ghost peppers tumbling from my nostrils in red slurries of crippling, unforgettable pain.

When I was 19, in an attempt to see how the regiment would affect our stool, my friend Callen and I embarked on an all-corn diet. Eating nothing but corn microwaved in our dorm room, we chronicled the four-day affair in lurid detail on our blog allcorn.tumblr.com, a site that, in addition to featuring photos and video clips, also made the two of us minor celebrities in the darkest, most corn-fetishistic corners of the Internet.

The year after, I became a militant vegan, the dogmatic kind who refuses even to chew gum. My parents, supportive though they were of my self-exploration, still had their limits. And when it came to my dad’s birthday, the one day of the year that I should’ve known to cool it with the vegan shit, the stricken face he made when I presented him with a lime green vegan cake (avocado replaced the butter) has since become my definition for the word crestfallen.

Still, I am proud to say that I have tested many of my convictions and curiosities about food, and many of them have been found wanting. I will never again look at corn the same way.

On the other hand, though, several of my most deep-seated beliefs have held true all these years, one of which is my treatise on pizza.

Though as a food lover and former cook I have a great reverence for pedigreed ingredients and technique,

I think that in exceptional cases, such as with pizza, the use of nostalgia and comfort are more beneficial to the taste of a pie than even the most divine sourcing or composition. Though I will normally defend the merits of tweezer food to my death, when it comes to pizza, I have always believed that the more unassuming the better. The less traditional the pizza oven, more garlicky the sauce, pinker the pepperoni, chewier the crust, and checkered the tablecloth, the better the pizza is going to taste.

In my mind, there are only a few other food groups that share this line of logic (breakfast tacos being another), but it is inarguably true, or at least I have never found sufficient proof otherwise.

Ray’s Pizzaria, a pizza joint in a city that loves Mexican food, has managed to succeed where other pie restaurants have floundered. The mini-chain opened its fifth outpost, this one on 281 near 1604 last month, and the explanation for their success is clear. The pies are made with love; the vibe of the restaurants is family-friendly; the prices are affordable, the portions are massive, and the service is friendly. As Warhol made art from the commercial, Ray’s makes exquisite pizza from the common. There are no dollops of buffalo mozzarella or wisps of basil dotting their pies, only hearty medallions of spicy Italian sausage and sweet sautéed peppers on slices so large that you’ll honestly — honestly — be full after just one.

Is the world a confusing place? Yes. Is food an increasingly fraught ocean that diners are forced to navigate every time they lift a fork? Unfortunately, yes.

But when it comes to Ray’s, things make sense again. The place makes good pizza. That’s it.

‘Catálogo De Maravillas: Puebla, Las Siete Regiones’

Photographer Marco Antonio Sanchez is something of a purist. Not a purist in the sense of photography, per se, because photography as such can be an artifice too. No, Sanchez is a purist in terms of his love affair with the subject, and thus the subjective and singularly attuned eye of the photographer. In his Fotoseptiembre offering “Catálogo De Maravillas: Puebla, Las Siete Regiones,” curated by Jake Pacheco, Sanchez positions himself, and by extension the viewer, in the vantage point of an innocent (albeit technically adept) wanderer.

Though he hails from Puebla originally, Sanchez seeks to capture the power of discovering the intimate and sublime treasures of the Mexican state’s seven distinct regions. His approach, this situation between familiarity and exploratory intuition results in a whimsical, subjective, and wholly breathtaking photo-journey through a rich and diverse territory. ◀ While writer-director George Lucas’s debut THX 1138 gave viewers an Orwellian nightmare in a distant dystopian future, his follow-up, 1973’s American Graffiti, offered an idealized look at a halcyon past recent enough for most of the audience to misremember right along with the auteur. With a tagline asking “Where were you in ’62?” Graffiti served up cinematic burgers, fries and shakes aplenty via roller-skating carhops. Drag races, doo-wop and Wolman Freaking Jack himself abound for an ensemble of fresh faces in a single, magical summer night between high school and college. Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, The Wonder Years, et al. would follow suit, and sequel More American Graffiti would put its blissfully ignorant innocents through LSD trips, marriage and the Vietnam War, but the original freeze-frames its cast of characters before the realities of adulthood and, tellingly, the assassination of John F. Kennedy have a chance to take hold. Thursday’s outdoor screening, featuring live music and a classic car show at the site of an old drive-in theater, has gotta be the best possible place to watch it in 2016. ▶ San Antonio-born, NYC-based artist and photographer Wendy Bowman brings her old hometown a thoroughly engrossing look at one of its most vibrant neighborhoods in her Fotoseptiembre exhibition entitled “Southtown.” In the newly created series, Bowman returns home, wearing the hat (and garnishing the lens) of a native and interloper at once. Her focus on the Southtown area, however, produces results that are unlike those likely to be duplicated by just any tourist with a camera. She’s not only a skilled photographer with a keen artistic vision, but she knows this place; its humor, its pain, and its complexities. As such, Bowman brings life to subjects here, through her shooting, processing, and framing, that may be overlooked or deemed unimportant by someone who has never been intimate with the place.

STRIPPING THE STANDARD San Antonio burlesque festival celebrates its 5th anniversary KELSEY VALADEZ

When people hear the term “burlesque” some still think of that 2010 film with Christina Aguilera. For others—like performers Lita Deadly, Jasper St. James and Dino Foxx—it’s a more nuanced label, one associated with radical, freeing selfexpression. Those performers will shake up the city this weekend with San Antonio’s fifth annual San Antonio Burlesque Festival.

Attendees will see everything from burlesque and sideshow to drag and aerial acts, says Lita Deadly, founder and producer of the festival who’s been involved in the burlesque scene for several years.

Organizers say the festival showcases both classical and neo-burlesque, which can incorporate comedy and satire or political motivation. The festival will feature politically motivated acts that involve genderbending, and something called “nerd-lesque,” where performers cosplay on stage and create a story 34

through intentional choreography.

But isn’t all burlesque politically motivated to some degree? Its history as adult entertainment pushed social boundaries and taboos, making its mark as a sociopolitical movement without many people realizing that taking your clothes off could even accomplish that. Longtime queer performers like Dino Foxx insist burlesque is about much more than just shedding clothes in front of a crowd. What began as a form of parody evolved into exotic dancing on the vaudeville circuit. During Prohibition, burlesque was part of a culture that encouraged an uninhibited atmosphere.

Eventually, the artform declined partly due to the presence of nudity in theaters. That is, until it was revived with neo-burlesque.

To Foxx, it’s about changing what mainstream culture considers beautiful. “People walk away feeling a little sexier, more empowered, they can

see themselves in something that is beautiful and glamorous and positive,” says Foxx, who will emcee the festival. This impact on the audience plays a huge role in the festival’s growth every year. Foxx calls the shows eye-opening for first-timers, who often come back with a group of friends to share the experience.

“They automatically think of at least four people they can bring to the next one,” he says.

This year, the festival brings in performers come from all over the country, even some internationally.

“People from New Zealand have applied. People are taking notice of our festival here in San Antonio and want to be a part of it,” says co-produce Jasper St. James, who will also be performing in the festival.

“Some of it is word of mouth,” he says. People are intrigued when they hear about the festival, where awards will be given out on Saturday night, but the headliners are the real selling point for those who

producers say that this year’s event fits squarely in the hybrid category. “It’s important to our lineup that we have different type of representation of genders, ethnicities, body sizes, even ages, and it’s incredible,” says St. James.

The festival includes a “burlesque legend” in their lineup every year, and “Dusty Summers is our legend this year, and she is recognized as a Legend by the Burlesque Hall of Fame,” says St. James. Noted as Las Vegas’s “only nude magician,” she performed for 24 years across the U.S and Canada, before returning to the stage 25 years later in 2006. St. James says that it was important to add a dynamic of “not just what’s happening now,” but also a piece of history that gives hope for the future of burlesque.

“I feel like any audience member can identify with someone on that stage. It’s a really empowering event and entertaining at the same time,” he said.

That empowerment is precisely what the whole festival is about. “Burlesque is about body positivity,” says Deadly. “Love yourself for who you are.” Burlesque can function as a vehicle for political commentary, especially regarding forms of identity and discrimination based on those identities. “We have each struggled at one point with discrimination,” she says. “And as performers who have faced such issues, we wanted to create an environment where any performer would feel comfortable to come out and perform.”

But regardless of how audiences interpret the performances, the festival producers emphasize that it is about empowerment.

“People can identify with the performers,” says St. James.

And art-discussion aside, it wouldn’t be a San Antonio event without tacos.

“We’ve heard many times that our festival for many performers who’d tour the national circuit that this is coming home for them,” says Foxx. “Because this San Antonio, and we bond over tacos, and when it’s all over on Sunday we have a brunch and they get to see the hospitality that is native to San Antonio.

That sets us apart.”

recognize them. This year they include Violet Chachki, Perle Noire, Chola Magnolia, Dusty Summers, and J.D. Hickcock.

All of which highlights how Texas burlesque has come a long way since its inception.

“Pretty much every major city in Texas has a festival,” says St. James. “When we first started San Antonio Burlesque Festival, we were like, why don’t we? We had a scene, we’re a major city, why aren’t we doing this?”

San Antonio’s festival has put the city on the map, burlesque-wise, attracting talent and well-known performers like Perle Noire, known in the community as the “Mahogany Queen of Burlesque” and Dusty Summers, known as “Las Vegas’ Only Nude Magician.”

Yet there’s still the ongoing struggle of engaging the city, possibly due to the city’s traditionally Catholic context, or maybe just general lack of knowledge about the art form.

“A challenge for us has been to educate and get the word out in our city about our style of entertainment,” says Deadly. “There are still a lot of people who don’t know what burlesque or sideshow are.”

While educating the city may be one of the challenges, Texas itself is growing its burlesque community with five major festivals.

And San Antonio’s has clearly grown since its inaugural run in 2012. That year, Friday night’s teaser was the Korova, and only Saturday night was at the Woodlawn Theatre. This year both nights are at the Woodlawn.

For performer Perle Noire, it’s a return to the city. “Perle Noire was our first headliner for our first year, and we’re having her back for our fifth anniversary,” says St. James.

Perle Noire just got off tour with Dita Von Teese, and has danced her athletic and sultry performance worldwide.

Foxx says that burlesque is in part about providing a safe space for expression – especially for expression that’s been demonized in the past, like androgyny, drag, or open sexual expression.

“It was important for us as producers who are queer identified and all people of color that our headliners represent that mission to provide a space for people who look differently,” says Foxx. “And right now, in our political landscape and where we are as a country, it was super important for one our headliners to be a fierce black woman, and someone who has already left a lasting impression on our festival to begin with.”

Both Foxx and St. James credit the festival’s growth to Noire’s 2012 performance.

With any performance comes the question of whether any given piece is politically motivated performance art, an act of expression, pure entertainment to be consumed, or some hybrid. The festival’s

A sensitive look into a disquieting social issue, Connection Lost is a theatrical dance experience that pays homage to National Suicide Prevention Month in September, a span of several weeks dedicated to the collective efforts of citizens, organizations and professionals to reduce suicides — the third leading cause of death among young people according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Hosted at Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex, the production is the collaborative project of Stephan Gaeth, the proprietor of the Uptown Studio in Beacon Hill, and Tara Wright, a counselor and artist working in San Antonio.

“We’ve both lost people,” explained Gaeth during an interview with the San Antonio Current. “In dealing with the subject matter, [Tara and I] felt a calling to perform … She wrote a lot of the dialogue, and I’m doing the movement.”

Like a number of Gaeth’s past projects in the local theater scene — which includes Asking for Change, a poignant rendition of urban homelessness, and Trash Tree, a post-apocalyptic commentary on environmental degradation at its worst — Connection Lost is imbued with a very nuanced understanding of the relationships between human beings, as well as the world at large. According to Gaeth, whereas Asking for Change explored the alienation of the homeless from their support systems and Trash Tree explored humanity’s alienation from the Earth, Connection Lost reimagines the erosion of one’s social relationships in different stages of community, culminating into the ultimate disconnection from oneself.

In the process of illustrating this harrowing emotional decline, Connection Lost integrates a scripted narrative with choreographed motion and improvised moments of audience interaction, allowing spectators to engage with the characters directly. Although the performance as a whole is cemented in a storyline, these unexpected uses of improvisation lend “a wonderful organic feeling to the show,” as Gaeth explained.

The performance also incorporates the music of Jaime Ramirez and Femina-X, two San Antonio-based outfits that contribute different levels of emotive power to the show’s rendering of the ultimate disconnection.

“Art holds a place in society to speak out and bring things to light,” the codirector added. “Suicide takes a lot of lives every year. People need to know they can talk about it, that there are safe spaces, that there are others who will listen.”

Connection Lost shows at Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex on Thursday, September 15 at 8pm and Friday, September 16 at 11pm. Tickets ranging from $10 to $12 are available for purchase now.

Way back in the 20th century — 1999, to be precise — a couple of indie filmmakers called Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez came up with the truly brilliant idea to make a movie on an ultra-low budget by giving cameras to three actors and setting them loose in the Maryland woods to improvise a “documentary” about a search for the “true” story of a legendary local witch. The effect was so convincing that millions of people actually believed that it was a real documentary about an authentic legend, that the three young people had gone missing in the woods, and that their equipment and the footage depicting the horrors that befell them had been found a year later.

The Blair Witch Project truly looked like it was what it purported to be, and the infant Internet of the day wasn’t much help in authenticating or debunking a maybe-fake, maybe-real “documentary.”

The movie was not the first to utilize faux found-footage, but its enormous mainstream success ensured that the conceit would be imitated. And boy howdy, was it ever.

Found-footage has, by 2016, become a cheat, a shortcut, a cost-cutting dodge, a way to replace a good tale well told with some shaky camerawork and a pretense of reality.

Enter director Adam Wingard and screenwriter Simon Barrett. They’ve made names for themselves snarking on ’80s action movies with The Guest and ’70s

slasher flicks with You’re Next. They don’t make their own movies so much as remake everyone else’s. So who better to give us Blair Witch, which isn’t only an entirely superfluous attempt to recapture the magic of the original film — not possible now that the foundfootage conceit is long since played out — but is also a remake masquerading as a sequel. (That’s another pit Hollywood has fallen into lately; see also Jurassic World and Independence Day: Resurgence.)

This time out, it’s Lisa (Callie Hernandez) heading into the Maryland woods with friends Peter (Brandon Scott) and Ashley (Corbin Reid) to make a documentary about their pal James (James Allen McCune) and his quest to find out what happened to his sister, Heather... the documentary director from the 1999 movie. James is heartened by the fact that locals Lane (Wes Robinson) and Talia (Valorie Curry) discovered what Lane believes is more of Heather’s missing footage, which doesn’t offer him any new evidence of anything; he already knew Heather had been out in those woods. But James is obsessed with finding Heather, because if he weren’t, there would be no movie. It could have been a potentially interesting twist on a horror trope if James and his friends weren’t young twentysomethings (James was only four years old when Heather went missing). But old people don’t

buy tickets for found-footage horror movies, and young people don’t want to watch old people running around in the wood screaming, I guess.

Wingard and Barrett try to expand the found-footage conceit, but all they do is break it. The Scooby gang heads into the woods with a drone that allows them to get aerial footage, and each of them has an earfitted camera that gives us POV shots; material from these sources plus handheld cameras has been edited together into something that more closely approximates a traditional narrative movie than anything allegedly found-footage has any right to be. It also raises the question of who edited the footage, and to what end.

That question remains unanswered, as does the really obvious unspoken big one: Why make this movie at all? There was story left untold from 1999, like who or what the witch is and what, precisely, happened to Heather and her fellow filmmakers all those years ago.

Blair Witch seems to be setting up a particularly trippy solution to the mystery of Heather’s disappearance, but after a lot of tromping around in the woods, some familiar horror-flick scares, and fresher but ultimately dead-end hints that the fabric of the physical world has been messed with, Blair Witch ends up in the same place the first film ended up in. It goes nowhere and says nothing we hadn’t already heard 17 years ago.

QUEEN SUGAR San Anto native stars in Oprah-produced series

When San Antonio native and Harlandale High School graduate Marycarmen López moved to Los Angeles last year to see where life would take her in the entertainment industry, she had no idea what to expect. Most of her on-camera experience came from her role as a reporter, producer and host at the Spanish-language network Univision, but López was looking for something more.

“I had my reservations about moving to L.A.,” López, 27, told the Current during a phone interview this past weekend. “I was told I wouldn’t be taken seriously because I had been doing television hosting for five years. Hosting was something I enjoyed doing, but I needed another creative outlet.”

That outlet came in the form of Queen Sugar, a new dramatic TV series for Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network. Based on Natalie Baszile’s book of the same name, Queen Sugar tells the story of the Bordelon siblings who inherit a sugarcane farm in Louisiana.

In early March of this year, López auditioned for and won the role of Reyna Velez, an elementary teacher who becomes very involved with the Bordelon family.

López said she received the script the night before the audition.

“It was an audition I was definitely excited for,” she said. “I just focused on learning the script. I didn’t even realize the gravity of it until it was happening.”

Not only was Queen Sugar being made for the OWN Network and executive produced by Winfrey, the first two episodes were being directed by awardwinning filmmaker Ava DuVernay (Selma).

After three rounds of auditions, López was offered the role and put on an airplane to New Orleans to meet director/executive producer DuVernay and actor Coffi Siriboe. She spent the next four and a half months in New Orleans shooting the series.

“It all happened pretty quickly,” López said.

“Starting a career in the entertainment industry is different for everybody. It really wasn’t easy-breezy for me, but I think my on-camera experience helped even though hosting and acting are two different worlds.”

Although Season 1 of Queen Sugar is only now getting underway, OWN has already greenlit a second season of the show. Lopez is looking forward to

building on her character and seeing where the story takes her.

“It’s exciting to see the character grow,” she said. “I put in the work for the first season and thought, ‘Oh my God, there is still so much to dig out of her.’ Now that Season 2 is coming along, I’ll be able to continue playing with the role.”

Along with expanding on her character during Season 2, López hopes to get another chance to speak with Winfrey on a deeper level. She met the media icon for the first time at the Queen Sugar red carpet premiere early last week, but wasn’t able to tell her how much of an inspiration she has been to her growing up, especially since Winfrey, herself, has transitioned from TV host to actress.

“I grew up watching Oprah,” López said. “She was a big influence on me. It’s a surreal feeling being in front of her. When I met her for the first time I was dumbfounded. I hugged her and said thank you and squeezed her hand. There was so much behind that, but I didn’t get a chance to tell her. Hopefully next time I see her I’ll just go for it.”

SA gets more Taco Palenque, a Hawaiian food truck, and later hours at Brown Coffee

> If you often dream of stuffing your face with Kalua pork sliders, you’re in luck. Husband and wife team, Kalani and Imelda (Mel) Young have opened the city’s first Hawaiian food truck.

The Hawaii natives hailing from Waipahu and Kalihi, have been in San Antonio since 2007, and they were missing flavors of their hometown so they launched their catering business four years ago. Since then, word of mouth snowballed and the Youngs are taking their business mobile with the Big Aloha food truck.

The Youngs are keeping the menu tight with Kalbi short ribs with macaroni salad (Hawaiian-style), cucumber kimchee, rice and chap chae for $10 or Kalua Pork sliders with Hawaiian-style coleslaw and garlic fries. Their catering menu is extensive so expect to find huli huli chicken, barbecue pork, laulau pork, loco moco and Spam musubi in the near future.

>There were issues with Drew’s American Grill, sure.

The place was too dang big, and I’m about 80 percent sure that building is haunted. But the flavors were there in earnest. When Drew’s closed in 2014, I was pretty bummed but knew it wasn’t the last time we’d see owner and restaurateur Drew Glick.

Glick, a New York native and now San Anto resident, has been sneakily trying to open Max and Louie’s New York Diner off 281 and Bitters since July. He’s already teased out chicken matzoh ball soup, breakfast all day, lunch, dinner, desserts and a full bar. Glick’s vision for the eatery is an “homage to the East Coast diner traditions that past generations honed and that continue to flourish to this day.”

Then, finally, Max and Louie’s New York Diner opened last week, with starting hours of 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. for the time being.

> Maybe it’s the Valley girl in me (Brownsville, what up?), but the opening of a second Taco Palenque in San Antonio makes for pretty exciting news.

Brown Extends Hours

> The coffee connoisseurs at Brown Coffee Co. know sometimes the urge to drink great java doesn’t just happen in the a.m. With that in mind, Brown Coffee Co.’s location at 1800 Broadway will now stay open until 9 p.m.

The shop, opened in 2013 by one of San Antonio’s first coffee roasters, will now be open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. But the deal is even sweeter than the caramel notes in the decaffeinated Finca de Las Rosas coffee: Brown’s 1800 location will also feature half-priced happy hour drinks from 5-7 p.m., which is basically a total steal.

Brown Coffee Co. was launched in 2005 off W. Kings Hwy. and now has locations off Broadway and inside Stone Oak Methodist Hospital.

Nick Spink’s hand-harvested cactus-paddle vodka, Spike, can lay claim to being unique — there’s nobody even close when it comes to out-there vodka-based materials. Quinoa might come in second.

A distant second, on further thought.

Here’s what I said about it in an earlier article: “It has an appealingly earthy green-ness that’s quite unlike any other vodka — it’s more ‘wine-like’ claims Spink, and he’s right here, too. Its very character means you may not want to put it up against delicate vermouth in a vodka martini (though nobody’s stopping you), but you might really have fun playing with other, ballsier partners such as ginger liqueur or curaçao (think margarita).”

So it should come as no surprise that, after a couple years of producing Spike in his homemade, McGyverlike still (“it looks like the high school science project of a precocious student — Medusa-like tangle of tubes and all”), Spink heeded the call for a more neutral product — more like conventional vodka, in other words. Thus was born Texas Pride vodka, made, I’m told, from milled corn sourced in Texas and Oklahoma.

The existence of two spirits both created a need for

larger distilling space (his original facility was on the Northwest side behind a music school), and it inspired Spink to open a downtown facility on 8th street just off Alamo. Welcome Artisan (almost) on Alamo.

In typical go-it-alone-fashion, Spink did most of the work himself on the bar, which occupies about a fourth of the warehouse-like space. The walls are a classy mid-grey, the bar top is made of heavily veined black marble, the light fi xtures (made

by Spink, of course) dangle like tiny stalactites from an exposed timber ceiling. There are a few fl oridly upholstered pieces of lounge furniture, but otherwise the space is spare — it needs people (preferably very colorfully dressed people) to come alive, though Spink says that Alex Rubio will be curating rotating art shows.

It also needs people who are heavily into vodka cocktails, as liquor-control regulations require that he serve only what he makes. A preliminary menu was divided down the middle between Texas Pride and Spike and included drinks such as a Lemon Drop Martini with a handmade lemon infusion, a cucumber martini with both handmade

cucumber and lemon infusions, and the Maggierita with house-made sweet and sour. House-made does continue to be key even in infusions, and the practice leads naturally to this question: Do you plan to do any fl avored vodkas in the future?

Answer: Yes. Spink contemplates using the tasting room adjacent to the bar to hold seminars, and may experiment with infusions — that might eventually see ramped-up production — in the classes. For the moment, infusions are all the production one is likely to see, as Spink is still “working off of stock,” and the distilling space remains empty. Patrons will have to walk through the future distillery on the way to bathrooms in any case. Spink built those, too. Look for special touches such as glass-bottomed lavatories that project water patterns on the floor.

Artisan, which saw its soft/grand opening last weekend, will have regular hours Thursday through Saturday from 4 p.m. to 2 am. Happy hour is from 4-8, at which time craft drinks are $5. Expect to see Spink behind the bar — looking even more wild-eyed than usual. At least to begin with.

“Bottomless” mimosas aren’t a thing, says TABC :(

Bottomless mimosas are going the way of the Dodo (or iPhone headphone jack, if you will).

Even if you haven’t noticed that unlimited mimosas have faded from menus during your most recent Sunday Funday excursion, we know of at least two eateries that have stopped offering the cocktails due to visits by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

It so happens that the TABC is using the Current’s article on bottomless mimosas, published on June 1 with the rest of our Brunch Issue stories, as a hit list of sorts, handing out warnings to bars and restaurants offering said mimosas.

Which is interesting, considering we actually called a representative with the TABC prior to running that article just to make sure bottomless mimosas weren’t, you know, illegal. A representative from the agency told us back in May that restaurants could advertise said bottomless mimosas, but that establishments are held responsible for over-serving and have to police how much people are actually drinking.

That’s just not true. After targeting the establishments listed in our story, a representative with the TABC was now more than happy to point us to its administrative rules for on-premise promotions, which states pretty clearly that bottomless items aren’t allowed.

Essentially, bars can’t charge a single fee for an unlimited or undetermined (or “bottomless”) amount of booze.

Since the article’s publishing, Rosella Coffee Co., which was given a warning

by TABC, has pulled bottomless mimosas from its menu. Single pours are still available. According to owner

Charles Gonzalez, the coffee shop rarely had any issues with intoxicated patrons.

Over at Tucker’s Kozy Korner, which is known for their soul food brunch, owner Chris Cullum and his staff also dropped bottomless mimosas from their menu after a June visit by TABC. Instead, they offer $5 single mimosas or $10 for a bottle with juice set-ups.

King’s Hwy. Brew & ‘Cue, which offered bottomless mimosas since its inception, will now offer mimosa set-ups like the ones at Tucker’s. Though King’s wasn’t visited by TABC, co-owner Denise Aguirre says she’d rather not risk it.

“We just took it off the menu,” Aguirre said. She added a few patrons at her other bar, The Point Park, were surprised they still offered bottomless mimosas because of said citations.

A manager at Madhatters, which was included in our list (now taken down, for obvious reasons), told Kens5 last week that the restaurant hasn’t served bottomless mimosas since 2009, yet was still paid a visit by TABC after our article (we sincerely regret the error).

Chris Porter, a media rep for TABC, tells us the agency uses any materials (articles, accident reports) that make mention of bars or restaurants with licenses for their purposes. He also confirmed that the agency used the Current’s article to target the bars and restaurants listed. TABC usually shows up to bars based on amounts of complaints and staff availability to pop into said joints for a visit—and to hand out warnings.

So, that’s why we can’t have nice things. Our handy guide turned into a hit list, and there’s no amount of cheap sparkling wine that can make that better.

Melvins ooze their way to Paper Tiger RYAN SMITH

“They’re a force of nature. Not even a band—a force of nature,” says Faith No More’s Mike Patton in the aptly titled film, Collusus of Destiny, which documents the career of the Seattle sludge metal gurus the Melvins.

Led by its core duo of guitarist Roger Osbourne (aka: Buzz/King Buzzo) and drummer Dale Crover, the band took shape in Crover’s family’s garage in 1983. Since then, they’ve seen a number of bassists come and go. In fact, the band’s new album that debuted this past June, Basses Loaded, features six different bass players — including Jeff Pinkus of the Butthole Surfers, Steve McDonald of Red Kross, and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana, all of whom have played with the band live at some point in the past decade.

The origins of the sound that produced such a long career and cult-like following are tough to pin-down. On one hand, the band started off covering Jimi Hendrix, meanwhile Buzz has also said that both the punk band Black Flag and heavy metal rockers Black Sabbath had a hand in some of his guitar style. Which makes sense.

You can sense a punk attitude in the unorthodox structures of the songs and a dark, wry humor peeks through, with the riffs that pack the punch of a Sabbath power-chord. The result is a genre typically described as sludge metal, combining heavy rhythms with slow tempos, a dark aura, and

aspects of hardcore punk.

The sound also had a profound influence on friend and fellow Washingtonian resident Kurt Cobain, whose demos were clearly influenced by tracks produced by the Melvins around that time. Dale and Buzz would even play in some of Cobain’s early projects, Fecal Material and Brown Towel, before sharing a vinyl single with Cobain’s newest project, Nirvana. While Cobain’s Nirvana would go on to become the face of the 90s grunge movement, it’s hard to imagine any of that happening without the influence of the Melvins.

With Nirvana’s rise to international fame, Seattle’s music was thrust into the spotlight, and the attention soon turned to the Melvins, who eventually inked a deal with Atlantic, leading to the band’s first mass-distributed release of the 1993 album Houdini. Two more albums would follow before Atlantic dropped the sludge kings, the exposure gained them a large and devoted fan-base across the country.

And by no means did Melvins peak with their series of major-label releases. Many more records, tours, and collaborations would follow.

And as the band tours through San Antonio celebrating their 33 years in existence, it’s clear they have more trails to blaze, sludge to explore, and venues to sonically obliterate. $17, 7pm, Sunday, September 18, Paper Tiger, 2410 N St Marys, papertigersa.com

New Nina Diaz single leaves us drooling for more

Dear Nina, Stop making us beg.

It feels like it’s been a year since your album was “cooked,” but you sure did make us wait.

The album, the solo debut by the Girl in a Coma singer, will finally be released on October 28 via Cosmica Artists, but she’s been kind enough to tease us with two gems so far: “January 9th,” a power ballad first streamed by Paper mag, and the monumental, striking video of “Trick Candle,” now available on YouTube after premiering on Fuse last week.

The video was directed by Jim Mendiola (with help from Ray Santisteban), in a radical departure from his previous work. Mendiola was even surprised when I congratulated him for it. “How did you know I made it?” he asked. “I was trying to keep it on the down-low. It’s not a video I would normally make,” he said.

Thank God for that: Nothing worse than watching a video and saying, “Oh, this must be Mendiola’s.”

Or whomever’s. I want my directors to surprise me, and “Trick Candle” (filmed at Gravelmouth Gallery) is the exact opposite of Mendiola’s black and white, minimalistic Pretty Vacant (1996).

“A lot of Nina’s friends got together to support her vision,” Mendiola said. “People like Shek from Gravelmouth Gallery and artist Larry Servin … I wouldn’t normally shoot a dance video, but it turned out to be fun.

We just wanted her to look good.”

Not a hard thing to do. In the video, Nina is equal parts Selena and a hungry lion ready to jump out of the screen and eat your neck. It is her sexiest video yet and a reminder that she has it all: the voice, the looks and (judging by the two singles) the songs, all penned by her.

Having a great band behind her doesn’t hurt either: Travis Vela on guitar, Austin Valentine on bass, Johnny Shrink on keyboards and Jorge Gonzalez on drums.

Pujol Pujol is a four-piece project based out of Nashville, Tennessee headed by musician, Daniel Pujol, who has been writing, producing, performing, and delivering a wild amalgamation of garage, punk, and abstract spoken word in a string of singles, EPs, and albums that date back to 2009. The newest is a spoken-word digital single, "Stinky Toy." It’s a track that diverges from Pujol’s usual rock and roll sound, with eerie instrumentation backed by dissonant guitar swells and primitive percussion. The lyrics explore everything from jobs and technology to social media, contemporary society’s obsession with cellphones, and the manner in which they create or erase one’s identity. Though his songs have become more experimental, the band’s live shows still emphasize rock numbers sure to engage a crowd. Roky Erickson The stories range as to who exactly said what, but when Austin’s legendary 13th Floor Elevators coined the term “psychedelic rock” during a rehearsal in 1965, Roky Erickson – the band’s longtime guitarist, lead singer and co-captain – was most certainly involved. Erickson’s life and career took a number of complex turns, including bouts with mental illness and drug abuse from 1968 onward, and for a time, it appeared as if he may never play again. There’s no shortage of women online selling their panties, PHOTO, direct your inquiries to them.

I think you got things wrong with CUCKS, the man whose husband got upset when he reacted with excitement when his husband shared a fantasy about sleeping with another man. I think CUCKS’s husband got upset because he only wanted more attention from his husband.
