No More SeaWorld Spies The following is not a failed elevator pitch for a James Bond movie. It is a real, live news item: SeaWorld ended its practice of having employees covertly pose as animal-rights activists last week.

SeaWorld CEO Joel Manby admitted to the practice during an earnings call on Thursday, February 25. The park had previously been accused of spying on People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Manby called those allegations “very concerning” in a July 2015 news release.

“These allegations, if true, are not consistent with the values of the SeaWorld organization and will not be tolerated,” Manby said last year.

PETA, predictably, had harsh words for the parks, alleging that the espionage went far beyond having employees wearing the same color T-shirts as PETA representatives or sitting in on a few planning sessions: “SeaWorld’s corporate-espionage campaign included trying to coerce kind people into setting SeaWorld on fire or draining its tanks, which would obviously have hurt the animals, in an attempt to 10 CURRENT • March 2—8, 2016 • sacurrent.com

SeaWorld’s local park is undergoing some upheaval of its own. Its president, Dan Decker, was fired last month as part of a broader corporate shakeup.

LaHood has said that his office likely wouldn’t retry the cases if the appeals court sides with Priest.

“I have some serious reservations about this case, and I don’t believe pursuing these cases would be in the interest of justice,” LaHood said, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

Uncertainty for the “San Antonio 4” Senior District Judge Pat Priest ruled last week that the “San Antonio 4,” a group of women who were imprisoned for sexual assault in the 1990s but later had their convictions vacated, should receive new trials, falling short of completely exonerating the women.

Kristie Mayhugh, Elizabeth Ramirez, Cassandra Rivera and Anna Vasquez were convicted of sexually assaulting Ramirez’s nieces in 1994. They maintained their innocence, and the trial was marked by bigotry, inconsistent stories from witnesses and other pieces of evidence later shot down as “junk science.” One of the accusers recanted. Their convictions were vacated in 2013, and three of the women were released from prison.

Vasquez had already been paroled.

Priest’s ruling claimed that their “assertion of proof of actual innocence falls short of the mark.” The case will now be taken up by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, which will issue its own opinion on the convictions.

New River Barges The ubiquitous flotillas that pass along the River Walk are closer to being revamped. The City of San Antonio announced last week that it had selected three finalists to redesign its river-barge fleet.

The finalists include METALAB from Houston, Sadi Brewton and Jonathan Davies from Austin, and San Antonio’s Luna Architecture + Design in partnership with Lay Pittman & Associates of Florida. The three finalists, selected from of a pool of 12, will receive $7,500 to develop their design and create a 3-D model.

The new boats were required to meet certain design criteria. The new fleet will be completely electric-powered, ADAcompliant and each boat will seat at least 35 people.

The designs will be publicly exhibited on Monday, March 28, from 6 to 9 p.m. at AIA’s Center for Architecture Gallery (1344 S. Flores St.). The winner will be announced on April 2. mmarks@sacurrent.com

TROUBLE AHEAD, TROUBLE BEHIND

Expanding the Bexar County Public Defender’s Office has not been easy MARK REAGAN/@210REAGAN

In early June 2014, the mood at the Bexar County Public Defender’s Office finally lifted a positive note. After three years of not having a Chief Public Defender — Angela Moore, who started the office in 2005 with a Texas Indigent Defense Commission grant, resigned in frustration in 2011 — Bexar County Commissioners Court appointed Richard Dulany as interim Chief Public Defender and promised to hire a fulltime person to head the office.

Things were looking up. Dulany seemed like a shoo-in to get the permanent position. He had a background in public defender work dating back to 1994 and he had pushed to reform the languishing office as it remained leaderless. The department was not in compliance with state law, and it faced a conflict of interest because it was housed in Judicial Services, the same department as the medical examiner and lab technicians — those departments are staffed with people who are sometimes crucial in convicting Bexar County residents working on an appeal through the office.

Dulany was one of two appellate attorneys in the Bexar County Public Defender’s Office at the time.

Further bolstering his credentials, it was Dulany’s complaining that resulted in some significant changes — Bexar County promised to hire a Chief Public Defender, bring the office into compliance with state law and resolve the conflict of interest presented by housing the public defender, medical examiner and lab technicians under the same department.

Fast forward to March 17, 2015, and the county hired a new Chief Public Defender. Dulany didn’t get the job.

Instead, it went to Michael Young, a criminal-defense attorney from the Rio Grande Valley who also worked as a federal public defender in Brownsville, Texas. By September 24, 2015, Young had fired Dulany.

“I was angry and in disbelief when I first got fired,” Dulany said. “Now I’m just so happy I’m not in that place and that I don’t work for the county.”

He says things started going downhill between him and Young right away. Young readily admitted that he and Dulany had “philosophical” differences.

“First, we are all at-will employees,” Young said of Dulany’s termination. “The only thing I would be comfortable commenting on is I don’t think his vision for the office and the role the public defender should play in indigent defense 14 CURRENT • March 2—8, 2016 • sacurrent.com

in this county was consistent with the idea I had.”

Dulany said his beef with Young’s vision boiled down to the mental health services provided by public defenders and a trial program to bring the public defenders into Central Magistration, where arrestees make their first appearance, to flag mentally ill defendants and represent them during bail hearings. He also took issue with a general misdemeanor trial pilot program.

“My whole thing about the public defender’s office and mental health services is it needs to be efficient,” Dulany said. “It was obvious to me when I was in private practice that the court-appointed attorneys do a real good job on the run-of-the-mill misdemeanor case.”

Not so when it comes to mental health.

“If you get appointed on a mentally ill defendant, and you don’t have specialized training, you are probably not the best person to represent that client,” he said. “And that’s where a specialty defender, a mental health public defender, is invaluable.”

As for Central Magistration program, Dulany said the private bar should administer it, not the public defender’s office.

Young, however, touts the Central Magistration program as a success. And he says public defenders are needed direly at Central Magistration.

Between April 1, 2014, and February 28, 2015, 7,216 persons were estimated to be eligible for diversion to the Center for Health Care Services for mental health treatment programs, according to a grant award from the Texas Indigent Defense Commission. Of those, just 2,170 were assessed and only 125 were diverted for services, representing 5.76 percent of persons screened and representing only 1.7 percent of those eligible for diversion instead of time in Bexar County jail.

According to the TIDC grant award, the underutilization of diversion is multifaceted, including noncooperation from arrestees — roughly 50 percent refused to participate or discuss mental health issues. This might be because of the physical layout of Central Magistration, where arrestees are booked by officers in close proximity to where they are seen by a mental health professional.

The other problem, according to the grant award, is the lack of having a mental health professional at the facility every day, all day, seven days a week.

However, Young says anecdotal evidence exists that the

pilot program will be successful. Young brings up a man named Jonathan Lanier, a homeless man arrested on a drug charge. Assistant Public Defender Erica Dominguez represented him at his first bail hearing and was able to secure his release on a personal recognizance bond and Lanier was transferred to Haven for Hope. The case was handed over to Assistant Public Defender Andrew Fletcher, who got it dismissed. By mid-February, when the public defender’s office tried to follow up, Lanier already had his own apartment and insisted that they meet him on the weekend because of his day job.

“The whole object of that was get him out of that whole go to jail, doing 20 days, getting time served and ending up back on the street,” Young said. It saved the county money and brought Lanier into the right kind of morally responsible justice.

However, there are logistical problems with it.

“The problem has been more injecting ourselves into a currently existing model out there,” Young said, explaining that detention officers, magistrate judges, pre-trial and mental health professionals are the existing landscape.

“And it’s like, all of a sudden, now we show up and we are putting ourselves in there.”

Last Tuesday, Young met with the magistrate judges in an effort to figure out how to streamline the process. He said the tone of the meeting was positive.

The misdemeanor trial court pilot program is also seeing a rocky start. As it stands, only County Court 12 will hear cases from the program. Again, logistics. A computer currently appoints attorneys, Young said, so if a mentally ill indigent client lands in any court aside from County Court 12 for a misdemeanor, the public defender’s office can’t represent them.

While 2014 and 2015 saw basic improvements to the public defender’s office — like bringing it into compliance with state law — the fact remains that expanding the public defender’s office has been a troubled process, from logistical hurdles to county politics to conflicting philosophies on the role of the office.

“You know, it’s difficult in any county. It really is, especially in Texas,” Young said. “It’s such a hodgepodge how they do it, and, so, defining those roles and making sure it’s going to be quality, that’s the primary goal, making sure you are doing something better for the client.” mreagan@sacurrent.com

‘That Thing on the Side of the Road’ ART

‘Rodin: The Human Experience’

After joining forces on Wall Street in 1970s-era New York, Iris and B. Gerald Cantor established a foundation “committed to sharing the treasures in their art collection with the broader public.” Now encompassing the world’s largest private collection of works by Auguste Rodin (known best for his iconic bronze The Thinker), the Iris & B. While Contemporary Art Month’s latest CAMx exhibition establishes a cross-cultural collaboration between San Antonio and Denver, “Three the Hard Way” and “#Clamplife” strike up a homegrown exchange between Freight and Clamp Light. Through controversy, CAM’s mission remains important, its scope impressive

If you pay attention to art in San Antonio at all, you know that this city is home to, and frequently hosts, a diverse plethora of truly exciting artists in all mediums. That being said, unless you make it a full-time occupation, it can be hard to keep up with all of the great artists, established and budding, that are at work on their own unique visions around town.

Contemporary Art Month (CAM) — a full month of loosely coordinated art events that was born along with Blue Star back in 1986 — remains the best way to broaden your horizons and explore art from all over the city and beyond.

After celebrating its 30th anniversary last year, CAM has been the subject of some controversy in the lead-up to this year’s March-long art bonanza. In short, the CAM Perennial exhibit, an important show that has been hosted at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center for

the past four years, was cancelled after GCAC pulled out at the eleventh hour, citing “the lack of diversity in this year’s group of artists, specifically the lack of representation of Latina artists in this year’s edition of the perennial.” To the point, the all-female exhibit that would have been didn’t fit with the GCAC’s mission to “cultivate, promote and preserve traditional and contemporary Chicano, Latino and Native American arts and culture through multidisciplinary programming.” Some have bemoaned the fact that the guest curator of the exhibit, Denver’s Laurie Britton Newell (who got the gig as a part of the CAM exchange program CAMx), was not made sufficiently aware of the cultural context in which the exhibit she planned would be exhibited.

For its part, CAM, which officially declined to add further comment for this article, said in a statement that it is “saddened” by the souring of a partnership that “was born out of a desire to share and exchange artistic ideas and create an event that would attract diverse audiences to the city’s West Side.” Continuing, the statement maintains that CAM approached the curation of this show the same way it always has: by giving the guest curator full reign to choose a show from the diverse talent pool in San Antonio with “no strings attached” and no “rules or quotas.” GCAC director Jerry Ruiz told the San Antonio Current last week that “More than anything, this is about a partnership that did not quite align and had miscommunication and assumptions on either side that derailed it.” He added that “You can’t curate regardless of context, no matter where you are.” Some might argue that the inclusion of particular artists and the exclusion of others based purely on ethnic background is unfair and damaging to the art community, while still others will retort that CAM should have made the cultural context of this exhibit, and the GCAC’s mission, abundantly clear to Newell in the first place. Ultimately, however, the GCAC blamed CAM for the

tone-deaf gaffe. Bottom line: There are two sides to every story, but in this story there is no clear winner and loser, just an important dialogue that quickly lost its fruitfulness and a city with one less exhibit to experience.

But, enough about the drama. This is about art and its value to us, as individuals and as a collective. Cortney Stell, the executive director and chief curator for the Denver-based Black Cube Nomadic Contemporary Art Museum, who selected the visiting artist Stephanie Kantor (more on her in the following section) for the CAMx exhibit at Sala Diaz, talked to the Current a bit about her involvement and the importance of art in general.

A perfect fit, Stell explained that “Black Cube’s mission focuses on bringing art to new audiences” and that she was excited by her organization being selected for CAMx. Stell says that she selected Kantor to be the CAMx artist because she “was impressed by her sense of scale and gesture, her interest in transitional forms and patterns and her dedication to her practice.” She added that she “also felt that her interest in patterns and forms that mark changing cultural identities was a timely topic given all of the current conversations in the U.S. about borders and boundaries.”

By way of summation and re-focusing, Stell’s words on the value of art in our contemporary world are crucial and can serve to refresh us, and create a spirit of openness and forgiveness, for the wonderful month of art ahead: “Art is a vital part of our life because it offers time to reflect on the world we live in. It is a space for digestion and it allows us to think of the world anew. As the world evolves, and through our increasing connectedness, it offers an important space for the development of one’s own response, or, as put in the contemporary art field — it develops a sense of criticality to the world we live in. And, because art does not require an action in the end, it keeps audiences open to exploration; a luxury that our practical or everyday lives may not regularly afford us. Art is a critical aspect of healthy and just societies.”

during which he captured a multitude of disparate sounds, musical and otherwise, Boyd has created a truly unique, immersive multimedia and sculptural installation that will transform Blue Star’s interior and exterior.

Boyd’s “Going on Going” opens in tandem with “Do It & Do It” (a meta-artistic, neverending and participatory exhibit dreamed up

CAMX: “MOCK PAVILION” • This year’s CAMx exhibit, hosted by Sala Diaz, is heavy. Literally. The 2,600 pounds of material, designed and crafted for the “Mock Pavilion” exhibit by Stephanie Kantor — including 1,600 hand-painted tiles, 36 ceramic vessels, tapestries and custom wallpapers — made the long journey from her home base at Black Cube in Denver to San Antonio by way of a huge shipping container. Kantor, selected by Cortney Stell of Black Cube as this year’s CAMx artist, created her installation with Sala Diaz’s repurposed environs and ethic in mind. Additionally, “the idea to engage the structure of the pavilion came from a recent trip to Istanbul, Turkey,” she told the Current last week. Drawing on a visit to Topkapi Palace, “one of the most beautifully tiled architectural spaces in the world,” she decided “to combine the site of the pavilion with museum period rooms and the interior of a home as collection.” The resulting indoor/outdoor installation is a multicultural (and magical) transformation of the space that sees the

artist “focus[ing] on a few cultures per room and [thinking of it] as a tableau.”

32ND ANNUAL STUDENT ART EXHIBITION • In its 32nd consecutive year, the UTSA Student Art Exhibition is a juried competition with works by undergraduate and graduate students.

> Inaugurated in 2012, the Miss CAM Antonio virtual pageant (of sorts) is a slick marketing idea designed to ratchet up the online buzz surrounding CAM, its events and its mission. The CAM website explains that the contest is “open to anyone currently living in San Antonio — male or female, young or old” and that entering is as easy as posting a response to the question “As Miss CAM Antonio, how would you promote contemporary art in San Antonio?”

These responses are posted to the Miss CAM Antonio Facebook page “in the form of words, video, photos or any other medium that can fit into a wall post.” And, the individual with the most likes takes the designer crown. At this point, the voting has already closed for this year, so let’s talk about the hardware that will adorn the winner who will be crowned at Thursday’s CAM Kickoff Party.

This year’s custom-made crown — that’s it on our cover, in all its fuzzy fierceness — was created by Sarah Fox, a painter, sculptor, collagist, designer, art instructor and Texas transplant. Fox, who recently received her MFA from UTSA, where she teaches along with summer stints at the Southwest School of Art, began her career in the arts as a graphic designer before diving into her true calling as a multimedia artist concerned with figurative and symbolic work that often fuses history and fantasy, the familiar and the alien, the human and the animal. Last week, she

explained to the Current that her goal with the crown was to “create something big and beautiful to follow up in the Miss CAM Antonio crown tradition but also fuse that with elements of my other work.” The morphed spider figure, inspired by a character in a recent collage, “is supposed to be fierce, because we tend to associate spiders with evil or violence, but the yarn and thread soften it.”

Continuing, she noted that the upcycled yarn and thread she used “once kept people warm, so it’s like a nod to the fact that spiders are actually pretty benevolent creatures, despite our fear of them.” As such, the gorgeous crown is a bit of a yin-yang figure that considers how closely related our fears and hopes, our suffering and our comfort, really are.

Commenting on the crown, as well as her work in general, Fox summed it up this way: “Creating these animal hybrids frees me to meditate on big social issues without finger-pointing or being too obvious.

Much like fables and fairy tales often use animals to tell human moral stories, my work with animals is supposed to feel mysterious, but also to have a point.”

NEW LEAGUE ON THE BLOCK

Will the United Soccer League propel San Antonio to MLS? MICHAEL MARKS/@MICHAELPMARKS

When new soccer club San Antonio FC holds its home opener next month, many parts of the game will look exactly as they did when the San Antonio Scorpions were the pro soccer squad in town.

Even though the Scorpions are no more, the game will still be played at Toyota Field. The loudest chants and cheers will blare from the same sections of the stadium. Even a few of the players who fans first knew as Scorpions will take the field for SAFC. But there will be at least one key difference. When the club kicks off, it will do so in the United Soccer League — a growing league that’s quite a bit different from the North American Soccer League, which local soccer fans grew accustomed to during the Scorpions’ four seasons.

When the City of San Antonio, Bexar County and Spurs Sports and Entertainment purchased Toyota Field from local developer and philanthropist Gordon Hartman, they did so with the long-term goal of bringing Major League Soccer to San Antonio. The Spurs group determined that the USL was the best platform to do that.

The league has a direct link with MLS, making it an attractive option for SAFC’s goals, the club’s managing director Tim Holt said.

“It’s the strongest American soccer league below and in support of MLS,” said Holt. “The link with MLS has been a major asset for the league both in terms of its growth, credibility and exposure. I think it’s helped [the league] to attract some really talented players.”

Although the on-field products of the USL and NASL look quite similar (minor league soccer is minor league soccer, after all), the structure of the two leagues is considerably different, and could have major implications for SAFC’s future ambitions.

The USL is growing rapidly. It started in 2010 and over half of its 29 teams were founded in the last two years, including independent stand-alone teams such as SAFC, clubs that are affiliated with MLS, as well as clubs directly owned by MLS teams.

MLS-owned or affiliated teams represent the majority of the league. The agreements allow the MLS clubs to use the USL much like minor league teams in other sports: They can send players down to get more experience, to rehab from injuries or to scout prospective athletes. That means that the makeup of a club on any given night can change drastically.

“There’s different philosophies to each organization,” said SAFC head coach Darren Powell. “So it’s a very interesting league, very intriguing league. One that is going to be very hard to predict. … That’s what’s very exciting and very unique about the league.”

Some of the clubs to most recently join MLS, including the Portland Timbers, Montreal Impact, Vancouver Whitecaps, Seattle Sounders and Orlando City SC first started in the USL before making the jump to the big leagues.

“There’s a proven pathway which has been developed,” Holt said. “We think [USL] is the best platform in order to be able to build this thing up to a Major League Soccer level."

A Step Down?

When Spurs Sports and Entertainment announced that its new team would play in the USL, some fans chafed at the notion of playing in a Division III league – which it is, according to the structure of the United States Soccer Federation. Some viewed it as a step down, as the NASL is a Division II league.

But the Division III designation doesn’t mean that the

USL is a downgrade in quality or competitiveness from the NASL. Recent results suggest just the opposite, in fact.

During the third round of the 2015 U.S. Open Cup, an annual American soccer tournament open to teams at all levels, there were seven matches between USL and NASL teams. The USL won six, including a victory by the Austin Aztex over the San Antonio Scorpions.

“It’s actually dramatically flipped the opposite way of how you might think — that Division II would dominate Division III,” Holt said. “That’s in no way disparaging toward the NASL, which is a good league. I just don’t think there’s any functional difference on the field.”

When recruiting players to fill out the roster, Holt and Powell said that they’d often compete against NASL teams and overseas clubs, in addition to other USL squads. And they’ve recruited a young team, with only a rare few players over the age of 30. Some of them have MLS experience, others have played overseas, most come from the USL or NASL. As a stand-alone club, SAFC can’t rely on a parent club in the MLS to send players down. Instead, they hope that the players they recruit now could be the core of a group that makes the jump to the major leagues a couple years down the road.

“What we’re selling is an opportunity to be part of a club that’s building something special for the future,” Holt said. “There’s a hunger with these younger players who are trying to fill in the front end of their pro careers and try to establish something.”

4 films to watch this Women’s History Month BRETT SEAMANS

March is Women’s History Month, so what better way to celebrate women in film than to highlight feminist narratives made in the 1980s? The ’80s were a wonderful time for female-driven properties. This was the era of Working Girl, Baby Boom and The Legend of Billie Jean. For your movie-going enjoyment, I have chosen four other female-inspired films that may have been forgotten by contemporary audiences.

Nine to Five • This 1980 flick was directed by Harold and Maude screenwriter Colin Higgins. Its story centers around a trio of office employees (Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton) who take their chauvinistic boss hostage, an act of defiance that is motivated by being subjected to verbal abuse and receiving unwanted sexual advances.

With their boss sequestered away, our heroines implement more accommodating policies that benefit women in the office, including salary increases, day care services and job sharing for working mothers. While still a comedy at heart, Nine to Five tackles serious issues regarding male attitudes toward women in the workforce, but it does so to the catchy beat of Parton’s Oscarnominated titular song. Available on Netflix Instant.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains • Diane Lane and Laura Dern star as disaffected teens in a 1982 proto-punk band. The young women find themselves on a cross-country tour as the opening act for a more established musical group. Lane, as the Stain’s singer, defies the submissive female archetype by engaging in confrontational monologues with her audience, ultimately bringing her band to mainstream prominence.

Women are enamored with the band’s dyed hair, Ziggy Stardust makeup and their refusal to wear sexualizing outfits. Men are dismissive of the band’s artistic endeavors, labeling the Stains as a gimmick, a viewpoint that still dominates the rock world today.

These young women are a completely different breed than their conformist Baby Boomer parents. They are brazen in appearance. They are less emotional than most of the men. Simply put, they are the Stains, “and they don’t put out.” Available on Amazon Prime.

Born in Flames • Lizzie Borden’s seminal 1983 film takes place 10 years after the War of Liberation, where the women of New York City successfully overthrew the Democratic government and left a Socialist party

wielding the political power. Despite the minor gains women have experienced (the government now gives hiring preferences to females), an imbalance of power between the sexes still prevails.

Spurring on the desire to promote female equality among the pervasive masculine culture is the Women’s Army, a predominantly African-American and lesbian group whose neighborhood offerings include child day care and rape rehabilitation centers. With the federal authorities monitoring the group’s activities and with a mantra proclaiming that “all oppressed people have a right to violence,” this militant narrative most assuredly ends in death and destruction. Available on Amazon Prime.

I’ve Heard the Mermaids Singing • Films espousing feminine virtues don’t need to be overtly political. 1987’s Mermaids is such a film. Sheila McCarthy plays a secretary for an accomplished female art gallery curator. McCarthy is enamored with her boss’ beauty, sophistication, liberating views on sexuality and her desire for “universal respect.” The nebbish secretary’s naive decision to hang her boss’ lover’s painting in the gallery leads to surprising and unintended consequences.

This flick, a prototype for the New Queer Cinema movement, never comments upon the heterosexuality, lesbianism and bisexuality inherent in its characters’ desires.

Psychologist Lisa Diamond describes this spectrum of sexuality as sexual fluidity, stating that female desire results in a fluctuation between same-sex and other-sex romantic longings. Maybe it’s a Satanic Majesties. Stepping back and assessing Mick Jagger, Terence Winter and Martin Scorcese’s respective oeuvres, Vinyl — and I place the onus of the so-far shrug-inducing ersatz epic primarily upon their shoulders — is a convincing attempt at a tale that perhaps could’ve been left untold: A valid go at something that is not altogether terrible but far from the best output of any of the trio’s careers. It is only three episodes in, after all, but what a bloated three episodes it’s been.

Richie Finestra, played by Bobby Cannavale, stars as a hardworking, formerly hard-partying record executive who has put his baser habits to bed at the behest of his loving wife (Olivia Wilde).

In a world full of free drugs, meaningless sex and poorly portrayed rock ‘n’ roll (Jagger’s son James plays a particularly exaggerated role as the singer of a punk band named the Nasty Bitz — one of the worst fictional band names since the Wylde Ratttz, Velvet Goldmine, or The Oneders, “that’s pronounced Wonders,” in That Thing You Do) Finestra bounces back and forth between the boardroom and the barroom. Squashing a million dollar buyout from German-owned PolyGram Records, Finestra and his business partners, including a convincing Ray Romano as the Jewish moneyman, are back in the market for some new,

“raw” talent.

Upon putting the kibosh on the PolyGram deal, Finestra dives headfirst into the cocaine-fueled, liquor-lapping world out of which he recently pulled himself. But not before getting in over his head with the brash owner of several prominent radio stations, played by an unrecognizable but totally believable Andrew Dice Clay. The spinout, exacerbated by a non-fictional but highly exaggerated building collapse at a New York Dolls show — one of the few scenes in the series in which the songs don’t sound like the bland, affected dumpster-ditties utilized throughout the rest of the series — reinvigorates Finestra’s lust for life and real rock ‘n’ roll.

The episodes travel back and forth through time, cataloging the ups and downs of Richie’s career — those he’s fucked and fucked over — but never really finds traction. At least not on the level on which Scorsese, Jagger and Winter usually function. However, as a master auteur, world class musician and exceptional producer, respectively, Vinyl’s first three episodes may simply be a snapshot of the greater picture.

Before she opened ladled even one bowl of Texas red inside the Institute of Chili and still before she turned the beloved truck into Chamoy City Limits, Ana Fernandez was known solely as an artist. The Corpus Christi-born Fernandez was raised in SA, earned a bachelor of fine arts from The Art Institute of Chicago and later an MFA from UCLA. It wasn’t until her return to the city that raised her that she tried her hand at feeding the masses she was used to drawing.

In her latest, “New Watercolors,” Fernandez returns to her roots as she takes snippets of her life — be it on her drive to work or a park to shell out more raspas — using her camera and cellphone.

The exhibit will open Saturday, March 12, from 5 to 11 p.m. at Silkworm Studio and Gallery (1906 S. Flores St.).

Throughout her stints in Chicago, LA, Corpus Christi and now home, Fernandez says she’s amassed a sizable collection of tiny one-act plays on her phone, along with source material from local media.

The images can include anything from fresh catfish sold to a local grocer to restaurant store fronts, like Gorditas, a gouache watercolor that features the custom signage found in most mom-andpop, hole in the wall joints. It’s true — caldo and menudo are served daily.

Though 90 percent of the estimated dozen 9-by-12-inch paintings Fernandez will create for the show feature scenes from her usual routine, we might have to wait a little longer for scenes from inside Chamoy City Limit.

“It’s about 50/50 [drawing and truck].

It’s our slower season, but last summer it was a 90/10. I didn’t paint very much at

all,” Fernandez said.

Instead, she’ll stick with teaching her truck employees about color theory using fresh-shaved ice, house-made syrups and Chinese candy.

“I like having the business because it’s completely separate and I love meeting the food people. To me the food is more exciting right now,” Fernandez said.

No raspas yet, but it can’t be too long as summer and its heat approaches.

She’ll have to find a way to get out of the sun somehow.

Alamo Beer is celebrating its first anniversary at its brewery (202 Lamar St., alamobeer.com) with a weekend’s worth of festivities. On Saturday, March 5 (noon-3pm), the brewery will host a food truck throwdown with food, beer, music and SA’s best foodie Instagrammers choosing which food truck ends up on top. Participating trucks include Rickshaw Stop, La Maceta Tapatios, Teka Molino, The Box Street Social, Rock on Wheels and Umamita. Early February brought with it relatively warm temperatures for our area, and another great bar for us to while away the hours at. Knockout by the same folks behind Sparky’s Pub is a welcome not just for sporty bears that want to catch the game.

Instead the bar is multi-faceted and includes something for everyone, which will turn it into a quick haunt for anyone looking for a fun place to unwind. Here’s how my visit shook out.

THE BOOZE • Happy hour runs daily from 4 to 11 p.m., but the rest of the specials at Knockout aren’t anything to sneeze at. Mondays mean Bear Bust All Day with 75 cent Lone Stars, $2 wells and $2 domestics, while Thursday’s Brass Knuckle Night features 75 cent wells (I can picture the trouble I’d get into now) from 10 p.m. to close. Cozy up to the bar on Saturday and Sunday for specials on pitchers.

THE AMBIENCE • It’s hard to define the exact feel of Knockout in part because it’s split up into four equally inviting areas. There’s the main bar with wood-paneled walls and more than a dozen flat screens (a handful of which are wall-sized projection screens) and a slew of seating options. The back bar provides an intimate space with more gaming such as darts and pool, on the most low-key of settings. Make your way outside — the garage doors are usually open — and settle down on the outdoor area that faces the busy Main Avenue. On our visit, the weather was crisp enough to warrant a sweater on the covered patio, but we all know that’ll change in the next few weeks. While still on the patio, pick up an order from Pup’s Pizza (more on this later).

SOUNDS • Aside from sports commentary, the occasional DJ and the house dance songs, you’ll find groups chattering away over a slice of pizza or frosty margaritas.

BITES • If you can’t make it to the AT&T Center for a Spurs game, or Wolff Stadium for a Missions game, or if the seats at Toyota Field make your bum go numb, you can still enjoy stadium fare at Knockout. Because where else are you going to get nacho rounds with gooey Rico’s cheese and spicy pico de gallo? Over at Pup’s, which is adorned with a trippy mural of four-legged friends enjoying a day in SA, the options include pizza by the slice and whole pies. At $3 for a cheese pizza, you might not miss those late-night tacos one bit.

If you’re not jonesing for cheese, Pup’s Specialties include a “Meat Luvers” with pepperoni, sausage, bacon, ground beef and Canadian bacon; “Nacho

As soon as it was announced that Danny Clift would be handing over the keys to the dive on the St. Mary’s Strip there were rumblings from the rabble about the never-a-cover, always-a-band bar becoming a ritzy enclave for the new tide of yupsters that are progressively swarming our big town, little city.

However, in conversation with the San Antonio Current, Clift was candid about his complete trust in the incoming owners' intentions, citing their efforts to keep everyone on staff, maintain the blue collar-friendly prices and perform several improvements to the aging archetype of a San Antonio rock ‘n’ roll club.

One step into The (New) Mix reveals that much has changed. The ceilings have been raised, Edison bulbs have been added around the exterior of the wall giving the room a quaint speakeasy feel, hardwood floors have been installed, the bathrooms are bathrooms and an impressive two-foot stage has been fashioned into the corner. These adjustments have turned the once cozy, deliciously dank environs into a bar altogether different, and they’re not done yet. I can hear the haters hating.

What hasn’t changed is the bar’s staff and their commitment to those

they serve. Happy hours run 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and feature $3.50 domestics, $3 PBR draft, $2.50 Lone Star tallboys, $3.50 wells, $4.50 you call its and $5 beer and a shot combos. In correspondence with their Album Happy Hour, sponsored by Southtown Vinyl, $2.50 wells will last as long as the record of the day is playing, from J Dilla to the Kinks to Fugazi — spun on a real turntable.

Plain and simple, The (Old) Mix “failed” because it was so gloriously divey. It could not continue to operate in the desired form and stay cheap in a cheap town. It now looks like any other decent small club in one of the places in the U.S. where bands and their fans are congregating on a Friday and Saturday to get pissy.

We’ll make it a San Antonio bar. If you can’t drink there because there’s no vomit-stench in the air or the lighting shows your man-boobs through your Exhumed shirt, too bad, so sad. Eleven years and counting and Yoshimoto, or the local band that “sounds like Sonic Youth’s good songs,” have released one record, Lemmings to the Sea. It’s 13 songs long. They think that it’s too pretty. The band has maybe 18 songs to pull from when they perform live. For the non-mathletes out there, that’s a rate of producing one-and-a-half songs every year. This means one of three things: they are meticulous songcrafters, wracking their brains and limbs in search of the perfect composition; extremely busy with real life; or shit-poor tunesmiths, churning out turd after turd, only stumbling upon something worth keeping once every eight months.

For this, the inaugural episode of “Embed With the Band,” a concept that you could think of as a domestic Almost Famous but without puppy love nostalgia, “Feverdog” or famous people, the members of Yoshimoto suggested we meet at The Mix, a venue that has played host to the raucous indie group for the span of their existence, as well as their favorite bar and the employer of Jason Butterworth, or “Butter,” the bass player. Staples, 76, still full of life and love

How Mavis Staples’ life of song helped shape America

There are few artists in the American canon of popular music who have attained what Mavis Staples has. She is not simply a pop singer that had some charming soul hits in the ’60s and ’70s. Staples and her family band, The Staple Singers, used their position as a gospel group, led by Roebuck “Pops” Staples and his guitar, to place the fight of Black Americans on the frontlines of pop music.

Perhaps the only drawback to Staples’ “career,” a word that fails to encompass her principal involvement in the history of our country, is that writing about her will inevitably become a fluff piece. What can you possibly say about a woman who has been one of the founders of the soundtrack to the American Experience? A woman whose voice echoed through a jail cell in the South just as it had in sanctuaries and meeting halls throughout the United States? Her voice, her tool for preparing or focusing those gathered to hear Civil Rights leaders and radical thinkers bent on what our government promises to us all and rarely delivers: freedom. The Staples family took the basic tenets of the Bible, particularly the liberation philosophies of the New Testament, and wrapped them in a digestible, dig-able swaddle of harmony.

The band’s primary message was, without debate, one of love and acceptance, healing and forgiveness.

I’m not an institutionally religious person: in a country where the predominant religion is often synonymous with rich white people telling me how to live, it is easy to have a negative reaction to a loving dogma that so rarely is put to use. But the idea of a healer, messiah, a savior who would take the weight of the world’s transgressions and bear them, no grievance being too great, is palpable in Staples’ recitations, from the desperately downtrodden to the rapturously jubilant. Her voice, from its sepulchral depths to its steeple-tall heights, bears the pain and passion of a people, a time, wherein history was being stretched, pulled and prodded by all kinds of interests — a time not unlike today.

Perhaps the most brilliant musical idea any mind has ever thought up was to put a backbeat to The Staple Singers' gospel songs. Not only did it plant one of the funkiest grooves behind some of the sweetest sounds, but it allowed for the hallmark principles of equality and respect to have a place in the often vapid realm of popular song.

Summertime: Willie Nelson Sings Gershwin Sony Legacy Recordings Released February 26

→ As the first country singer to receive the Library of

Congress Gershwin Prize for Songwriting, an honor held by only seven other artists in the world, it makes sense that the Abbott, Texas native with the blood of the land in his voice should release 11 Ira and George penned tunes. Naturally, what first comes to mind is Stardust (1978), a collection of Tin Pan Alley tunes produced by Booker T, and Willie’s commercial breakthrough, containing “Georgia On My Mind,” “All of Me” and Gershwin’s “Someone to Watch Over Me,” the latter being revisited on Summertime.

Those that are familiar with Willie’s canon, which is not a smoking device patented by the eternally lit octogenarian, know that the nasal master of phrasing has been doing all kinds of tunes his way for decades, not just country. Nelson has committed to wax pieces as diverse as gypsy jazz, ragtime, torch songs, rockabilly and, of course, the classic country evangelism for which he is best known, and that’s just on a single album.

Summertime continues the direction Nelson has been going in for awhile: intimate, personal renditions of classic tunes with a small ensemble of Family members behind him.

However, nothing is more powerful than when he sits at the mic with just his voice — drying and cracking but still as musical as ever — and Trigger, his nylon-stringed sidekick.

The emotion of an American institution reaching the winter of his life but still in complete command of his heartbreaking skill is on full display. And for a moment Willie sounds as vibrant and vital as if he was back in the spring of his youth, when the Gershwins dominated popular song and Willie Hugh Nelson was just another songwriter, dreaming of becoming a legend. ’S wonderful. –Travis Buffkin

But, there is something divinely satisfying about hearing Clarence Reid (aka Blowfly) call Oprah a bitch before ruminating on Johnny Mathis being the owner of the biggest butthole that you’ll ever see, before parodying Mathis’ “Chances Are” with the lines “Chances are because you wear a silly grin/ the moment your two-inch dick comes into view …” It’s gold.

The posthumously released album from the Miami master of masturbation is chock so full of indecent imagery and clever cunnilinguistics that no mere review could do it justice. → Pushing Through Darkness, the latest effort from San Anto/Donna, Texas/Seattle hip-hop trio Ghost Palace, is a brief (six songs, 19 minutes) but intense reflection on the pains of living in a fallen world. These are struggle rhymes, chiseled out of the stone of hardship, laced with the ghostly blossoms of alienation and desperation, and, thankfully, imbued with a hopeful slant that defiantly says: this is my life to live and my choices, along with their consequences, are mine to revel in or regret. “The Boy That Cried Wolf” and “Phantasmas” are particularly poignant tracks that deal with youth suicide and the death of elders in excruciatingly frank narrative form. The final track “Where Art Thou,” with only one place left to go in this battle against death and emptiness, turns skyward as rapper Sergio “Evolve” Hernandez laments the absence of God’s presence in his life, begging for a hopeful sign, for a gateway to a healing faith.

It may have been a hot minute since you last heard about Kreayshawn, but that’s not to say she hasn’t been busy. The Bay Area artist is best known for the fierce but short-lived hip-hop collective White Girl Mob (featuring V-Nasty and Lil Debbie). Much can be said about the trio, but, in short, sometimes doing hoodrat shit with your friends pays off. Kreayshawn’s big break came when a release almost too perfect for its time, “Gucci Gucci,” went viral.

If you remember this gem, it’s likely you listened to the sophisticated girl power anthem on repeat. In the corresponding video, you can see and hear Kreayshawn’s modus operandi: a DIY attitude offset by alternative school bad girl aesthetics and quick-witted lyrics laid to hype party beats.
