DRUMPF UNIVERSITY AG Ken Paxton tries to silence whistleblower, stumbles into yet another scandal.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s maiden voyage in statewide office has been a rocky one, punctuated by felony securities fraud charges and a lawsuit filed against him by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

And last week, Texas’ scandal-prone top lawyer waded into yet another controversy, this time trying to silence a whistleblower who claims the AG’s office under Paxton’s predecessor, now-Gov. Greg Abbott, quietly dropped a multi million-dollar fraud case against Trump University for political reasons.

John Owens, deputy director of the AG’s consumer protection division under Abbott, told multiple media outlets last week that top brass at the AG’s office inexplicably killed the investigation into Donald Trump’s defunct real estate training program, an investigation that concluded the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s get-rich-quick scheme had engaged in “false, misleading and deceptive practices” in Texas.

Rather than filing a lawsuit or pressuring Trump U to pay back the millions of dollars Texans spent on what the investigation called “dubious real estate investment strategies,” the AG’s office under Abbott dropped the case and Trump U quietly left the state. Years later, Donald Trump would donate some $35,000 to Abbott’s successful gubernatorial campaign, according to the Associated Press.

“The decision not to sue [Trump] was political,” Owens told the Dallas Morning News. “Had [Trump] not been involved in politics to the extent he was at the time, we would have gotten approval. Had he been just some other scam artist, we would have sued him.”

While Abbott quickly called Owens’ story “bogus,” Paxton took things a step further by trying to silence the whistleblower. Last Friday, Paxton’s office sent Owens a

cease and desist letter claiming the former AG official had broken “several state laws” by going public with his story.

It’s still unclear exactly why the case against Trump U wasn’t pursued or who ultimately made the final call to nix any lawsuit against or settlement with the company.

Abbott’s office has denied that Trump’s donation to his campaign had anything to do with the decision. And on Friday a deputy attorney general under his watch named David Morales fell on the sword, telling reporters in a prepared statement that he’d personally made the decision to drop the case and hadn’t even discussed it with Abbott before making the call.

Still, as Owens points out, even if Morales is telling the truth, that doesn’t necessarily absolve Abbott in the whole Trump U mess. “If he says he made the decision and then informed Abbott and [Daniel Hodge, then-first assistant attorney general], then I can’t dispute it,” he told the News. “But, they could have reversed him easily.

Abbott.” Curiously enough, the AP has reported that Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi similarly backed out of a lawsuit against Trump U that her office had considered joining not long before the Donald J. Trump Foundation donated $25,000 to a political fundraising committee that supported her own re-election bid.

Regardless of who made the final call, there’s the lingering question of why Texas would let Trump U quietly leave the state without consequence, even after an AG’s investigation determined it had scammed Texas taxpayers out of millions of dollars with a real estate scheme other state attorneys general have called “straight-up fraud.”

Still, none of it happened on Paxton’s watch. Perhaps he could have even steered clear of this one and just focused on the criminal charges against him that an appeals court refused to toss last week.

Instead, now we can add “targeted government whistleblowers” to Paxton’s increasingly troubled political resume.

We’re guessing this will be news to the state’s Republican leaders, notably Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Attorney General Ken Paxton, who have loudly declared their opposition to transgender rights.

But the Texans they claim to represent are watching a lot of trans porn.

Porn site XHamster last week turned over user statistics to Broadly involving searches for transgender porn in 11 states, the ones that have sued the Obama administration over its directive requiring public schools to allow transgender students to use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity. And Texas, one of the plaintiffs, leads the way in trans porn pageviews. Texans viewed trans porn videos on the site 1,641,050 times, searched for trans porn 105,053 times, and uploaded 881 trans porn videos to XHamster. Those totals dwarf the figures for the 10 other states in the lawsuit.

Zika virus spreads to Texas congressional race

The debate in Washington D.C. over how to pay for Zika virus prevention and research has trickled into Texas’ only competitive congressional race.

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Republicans and Democrats left the Capitol for a two-week break without coming up with a funding plan to fight the virus, which has infected 618 people in the U.S., including seven confirmed cases in San Antonio.

Nearly all of those cases were acquired by people traveling abroad in South America, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean. In 11 cases, Zika was sexually transmitted.

Since that break, Texas Democrats have hammered U.S. Rep. Will Hurd, a Republican, who unseated Pete Gallego in a tight race in 2014 for the expansive 23rd Congressional District that runs from West Texas to San Antonio. Gallego is challenging Hurd for the seat, which has frequently changed hands between Democrats and Republicans.

“Pregnancy is a wonderful but stressful time. For my wife and me, it culminated in the most special day of our lives,” Gallego said in a prepared statement. “But it is indefensible that Congress would add to the natural stress of expectant parents by failing to address the danger of Zika in our region or anywhere in the country.”

The Zika virus can cause infants to be born with abnormally small heads. There are 40 Zika cases in the Lone Star State, one of which was sexually transmitted.

Gallego’s spokeswoman, Lyndsey Rodriguez, said Hurd should be ashamed for not pushing his Republican colleagues toward a compromise.

“Recycled talking points from Paul Ryan may work inside the beltway, but families affected by Zika in Hurd’s own district deserve better,” Rodriguez said in a statement. “Responsible parents know that the health and safety of Texas children trumps Republican marching orders. Will Hurd should be ashamed.”

Texas Democratic Party Chairman Manny Garcia also lashed out at Hurd.

“Texas families are deeply concerned about the dangerous effects of the Zika virus spreading in their community,” Garcia said in a statement. “The Lone Star State was deemed one of the most at-risk states in the country and Tea Party Republican Will Hurd has done nothing to prevent it from spreading.”

The attacks against Hurd come as the Senate and the House fight over two funding bills. A Republicanbacked bill in the House seeks $1.2 billion in funding while a Democraticsponsored measure in the Senate would provide $2 billion in funding for Zika prevention and research.

Legislators are expected to wrangle over both measures when they return to the Capitol this week.

Hurd’s office did not respond to a request for comment, but he told FOX News that Zika is a real problem and $1.2 billion was already set aside for research and prevention, which isn’t exactly true as it hasn’t been approved.

When the English translation of Czechborn French writer Milan Kundera’s The Book of Laughter and Forgetting was published in 1980, The New York Times described it as brilliant, original and strange. The same could be said for visual artist/gardener/gallery owner Justin Parr and his ever-intriguing projects, which run the gamut from next week’s Hot Wells Harvest Feast (a chef-driven fundraiser uniting more than 30 Texas restaurants and bars at Lone Star Brewery) to an ambitious video installation (digitally animating thousands of photographs) commissioned for Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport. BALLET FOLKLÓRICO DE SAN ANTONIO This year will be a bittersweet one for instructor Boni Ramos and her ballet folklórico dancers. Last month, her mother and executive director of the cultural education organization, Emma D. Ramos, passed away. This will be the first time in 45 years Ramos will attend the festival without her. “She was the driving force and the one that instilled the Mexican history and culture of folklórico dance in us,” Ramos said. “She wanted to make sure that it was available to everybody. I know that she will be there with us in spirit — always smiling and always happy.”

BELGIAN AMERICAN CLUB OF TEXAS Learn about the history of Belgians immigrating to Texas in the late 17th century and, while you’re at it, partake in as much Belgian food as you can eat, from Belgian sausage (400 pounds should be enough, right?) to Belgian waffles with powdered sugar, strawberries and vanilla ice cream.

younger generations,” said David Verstuyft, spokesperson for Belgian American Club of Texas. “We’re coming together to share our family recipes.” Along with the mouthwatering cuisine at the festival, BACT will feature their dance troupe, a beer garden with Belgian imports and Belgian bowling — a game that resembles something between shuffleboard and horseshoes.

FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN CLOGGERS Linda Carolan first learned to clog when she was a child. Back then, when she was mimicking her greatgrandmother to the tune of her grandfather’s fiddle, she didn’t know she’d perform for audiences in Germany, Venezuela and beyond.

Carolan first learned flatfooting, a traditional type of clogging. Clogging itself is a kind of Appalachianbased tap dancing. Its roots reach back to Western Europe, primarily England, Ireland and Germany. As people from those countries migrated to the U.S. and made homes in Appalachia, clogging evolved with the bluegrass music of the area. It came to Texas with the first Scotch-Irish settlers.

Carolan’s group has existed for about 35 years.

Although other clogging troupes integrate more modern music or steps, Fire on the Mountain tries to remain as traditional as possible. Line dances and contemporary tunes haven’t infiltrated the group, and they likely won’t on Carolan’s watch. She sees it as a link to the past — both her own family’s, and the broader culture’s.

“Clogging in its original form, its traditional form, is very important to keep alive,” Carolan said. “We will lose it if we do not continue to educate people about it.”

The dances themselves involve complex taps and steps to create a beat with the clogs. It’s typically performed on a hard surface to amplify the sound of the shoes.

Sometimes individual dancers will perform on hard wooden boards for maximum effect. The rattling steps are punctuated with high kicks and yelps by the dancers.

Although she’s been clogging for most of her life, Carolan — now nearly 60 — doesn’t plan to stop soon. Not everyone can clog like her, she says, so she’s got to take advantage of her skill.

“I like to dance because I feel like it’s something that was given to me,” she said. “I just feel very blessed to ... be spry enough to do it.”

Even though she’s a San Antonio native, Rene’e Park is often called upon to teach the traditions of her family’s home — Hawaii. “We actually practice more of our traditions here in San Antonio, or ‘off the rock’ as we say, than we would in Hawaii,” Park said. “A lot of people that move here from the island, they start a family here and say ‘Auntie, come and teach our kids hula.’ You need to.”

Park wears many hats, but one of them is directing Hula Halau Ohana Elikapeka, a dance troupe and school. The group’s performances are a mashup of Polynesian cultures. They range from contemporary Hawaiian dances called auwana — a type of Hula — to Tahitian drum dancing, to others based in Maori and Samoan traditions.

Its roots stretch back to the late 1950s, before Hawaii was even a state. Park’s mother Elizabeth left Maui to serve in the Army. She eventually landed at Fort Sam Houston, where she met Rene’e’s father.

“In her unit there were several other Hawaiian girls who came. Not only were they women, but they were all very dark-colored in skin and they talked a little different than the mainland people,” Park said. “So my mom vowed then that … they were going to be here. They were sent here on a mission to spread the aloha.”

Since then, spreading Hawaiian culture has been the family business.

In addition to dozens of dance performances each year, Park and her family also run a Hawaiian restaurant and catering business, dance classes and a floral shop specializing in leis.

The troupe, which numbers a few dozen, is mostly comprised of local Hawaiian families. Some of its members were on stage before they were out of diapers. That’s what keeps it together after so many years, Park said, and what perpetuates old traditions that might otherwise die out.

“That’s what it’s all about — keep moving on to the next generation so they’ll learn,” Park said. “Sometimes it gets a little overwhelming, because we think ‘If we stop, what’s going to happen?’”

LEBANESE FOLK DANCERS OF ST. GEORGE The dance troupe from St. George Maronite Catholic Church has performed in San Antonio since the mid-1960s. A former dancer in the group now serving as the director, Deborah Mery Fernandez has enjoyed watching different generations of dancers, including her children and grandchildren, come through the church and learn, preserve and share the tradition of Lebanese dance, known as dabke.

“It’s been woven into our lifestyle,” Fernandez said. Along with the art of dance, St. George will feature Lebanese cuisine, including shish kebobs, tabbouleh, baklava and mint tea.

All-female mariachi groups aren’t the norm. But they were even more uncommon when Valerie Vargas started Mariachi Las Alteñas in 2002.

Vargas plays the violin and leads the 10-piece ensemble. She’d played in a professional mariachi group in high school, then founded Las Alteñas in 2002 after she graduated. Since then, the group’s lineup has stayed constant. They’ve been at it for a while now, but the allure of playing music they’re passionate about to a live audience doesn’t get old.

“To have a following and a fan base here in our own home city, it’s always an honor to be able to perform on stage and do a show and get people excited about mariachi music,” Vargas said.

festival. The group plays a mix of traditional and contemporary tunes, both in English and Spanish.

They’ll play classics, but throw in “At Last” by Etta James or “Orange Blossom Special.”

In addition to appearing all over Texas, the group has also played at the Hollywood Bowl and on Good Morning America. It’s a sisterhood — and one that sometimes gives them an advantage in a competitive industry.

“There’s some people that would think that female mariachis aren’t as good as male mariachis or can’t do the same job,” Vargas said. “When you’re in a female mariachi, you can perform songs that are written more for male artists to perform ... and also perform the songs designed for females. It gives us a little more of a broad, wider range of music we can play or interpret.”

SAN ANTONIO PIPES AND DRUMS Leading the band of bagpipes and drums into their 45th year at the festival is David Sutherland, who has been a member of the group ever since he was a kid. Although Sutherland admits he’s had to skip a couple of festivals over the last four decades (while stationed in Iraq), he’s proud to say his father, who is in his late 80s, hasn’t missed one.

“Every year, the Folklife Festival turns into a family reunion of sorts,” Sutherland said. “My favorite part is sharing in the cultures.” So, what would Sutherland like Texans to learn about Scottish heritage when they attend the festival? “If you’re from Texas, I can almost guarantee that you are Scottish,” he said. “I invite people to go to the Alamo and look at all those Scottish names and know they have some of that blood running through them.”

SIKH DHARAMSAL Sikh Dharamsal represents the roughly 300 families in San Antonio who are members of the Sikh faith — a 500-year-old religion that originated in northern India.

Sikh men are recognizable by the turbans they wear. The religion is sometimes mistaken as a sect of Islam, according to Gurpaul Singh, the media relations director for Sikh Dharamsal. Having a presence at events like the Folklife Festival, which Sikh Dharamsal has participated in for three years, is important to build a better understanding of the faith within the broader community.

“So often in the post-9/11 era, a turban is associated with a CNN sound bite of something negative — something to almost be afraid of. We are God-fearing people. People who have very similar core values in terms of freedom, equality and we want to share those with the local community,” Singh said.

At the Folklife Festival, Sikh Dharamsal will perform a traditional Punjabi dance called a bhangra.

The group will also host a booth where visitors can have their names written in Gurumkhi, the Sikh alphabet, and have a traditional turban tied on their head. The turbans, Singh said, tend to be especially popular. But the performances and attractions point to a larger purpose for the group.

“It’s important that we create awareness of who we are and what we stand for. Where there’s education, awareness and understanding, that’s the antidote to xenophobia and racism,” Singh said.

RICK SMITH Don’t expect to see anything you could find in the aisles of Home Depot or Lowe’s at Rick Smith’s festival exhibit. His collection of old ranch tools dates back 150 years and five generations to the 1860s.

“If you were a machinist or blacksmith or shoe cobbler back then, these are the tools that you would use,” Smith said. “I’ve probably got about 25 hammers that all do a different job.” Along with his hoard of hammers, Smith is traveling from his home in Devine with a 16-foot trailer filled with about 7,000 pounds of instruments — crosscut and rock saws, hand-crank drills and lumberjack tools, to name a few.

Word to the wise: None of Smith’s tools are for sale. You can ask, but do you know anyone who would part ways with a 100-year-old bunghole cutter

TEXAS WENDISH HERITAGE SOCIETY Located in Giddings, Texas, the nonprofit Texas Wendish Heritage Society formed in 1972 to share the story of how the first Wends (a historical name for Slavic pioneers living near Germanic areas), came to call Texas home in the 1850s. Glee star Jane Lynch makes debut in SA with cabaret-style comedy show KIKO MARTÍNEZ

While she didn’t get to croon as much as she probably would’ve liked as the track-suit-wearing villain Sue Sylvester on the hit TV series Glee, actress and comedian Jane Lynch has found a way to make up for it.

Currently on tour with her cabaret-style comedy show See Jane Sing, she pulls out all the stops.

“We dive into the American songbook,” Lynch, 55, told the San Antonio Current during a phone interview a few weeks ago. “We do everything from Irving Berlin to Nicki Minaj. We go all over the place.”

Joined onstage by her friends, actress Kate Flannery (TV’s The Office ), vocal producer Tim Davis ( Glee ) and the Tony Guerrero Quintet, Lynch plans to entertain audiences with her own renditions of everything from “Far from the Home I Love” from Fiddler on the Roof to Minaj’s 2014 hip-hop single “Anaconda.”

I’m assuming “Anaconda” made it onto your set list because you sang some Nicki Minaj on Glee, yes?

Yes, I sang “Super Bass,” and I freaking loved it! I became such a big fan of hers.

When that “Anaconda” video came out, I thought the world had just stopped. It was amazing and so cool. I thought it would be great if three very uncoordinated white people attempted that song with great, unfounded confidence. And we do. It’s the highlight of the show, and it comes out of nowhere.

Oh, do you sing in Spanish?

A little bit — very horrible, broken Spanish. You’re going to love my butchering of the language.

Was See Jane Sing born from the fact that you didn’t get to sing as much as everyone else on Glee?

Maybe deep down inside it was a reaction to that. But I had done Annie on Broadway (she played Ms. Hannigan) and the people from 54 Below in New York approached me to do four nights at their cabaret. I said, “Well, I don’t have a show, but I’ll get one!” It’s grown immensely since that little cabaret show. Now it’s a big extravaganza.

It’s been a little over a year since Glee went off the air. Have you had any withdrawals or has it been an easy transition to move on?

It’s been easy to move on, but that’s the way I roll. I’ve been doing theater for a long time. You put your heart and soul into something and sometimes it closes the second night. Sometimes it closes after six months and you just move on.

I’m used to beginnings and endings. I don’t suffer them.

Have you been to San Antonio before?

You know, I just visited San Antonio for the first time. I have a nephew who got married there. So, now, I have relations.

Do you think there is a gap that needs to be filled by another TV show that gay teenagers can identify with?

I would love that. It’s just a matter of time before everyone is really relaxed about someone’s sexual preference. But I know that it is still really tough for some kids, so I wish there would be a Glee 2, maybe with a whole new group of kids at a different high school. I think that would be a wonderful thing.

Besides “Anaconda,” which song in the show do you think San Antonians might enjoy the most?

Actually, we do have a song that’s Spanish, which probably won’t go over well with the Mexicans, called “The Skeletons of Quinto.” It’s a retrospective of the Spanish Civil War.

At the end of Glee, we find out your character becomes vice president to Jeb Bush in 2020. Do you think Sue could get along with Donald Trump and be his running mate this year?

Oh, absolutely. (Laughs) I think she would be the only person that could do it. I think they’d be at each other’s throats

Behold, the punch line that, for years, must have weighed on Dave Chappelle, one of our keenest social critics and comedic commentators, like an albatross of celebrity. He even comments on the ubiquity of the one-liner in his brilliant 2004 standup special For What It’s Worth.

“I can’t be no celebrity. This shit is just the worst … I went to Disney World with my kids … Everybody at the park! Fucking everybody, ‘Hey! Hey! … I’m Rick James, bitch! Hey, I’m Rick James, bitch.’ It’s like, ‘Hey, man, hey! You mind not calling me a bitch in front of my kids? Time out, motherfucker. We take a day off’ … Even Mickey Mouse did it. I said, ‘This is the most unprofessional shit I have ever seen in my life’ … I was fed up. I caught that motherfucker with an uppercut. Bop! Knocked his head clean-off. Everybody was screaming, ‘Oh, my God! Oh, my God … Mickey Mouse is Mexican!’”

And just like that, in what was originally a joke detailing the effects of celebrity culture on Chappelle and his family, the comedian turns the joke into a commentary on race in America, the assumed whiteness of our heroes and icons, in this case Mickey Mouse, and, again, comes back full circle, explaining why celebrities often act in what appear to be ludicrous, unhinged ways.

In this regard, Chappelle is one of the great sociologists of our time. With the vast dissemination of his comedic critiques via the groundbreaking Comedy Central series Chappelle’s Show, the argument could even be made that Chappelle has a broader reach and outlet for his perspective than Nietzsche, Kant, Descartes, Hume or any other number of thinkers that have made great envoys into the nature of human behavior. Sure, Aristotle never dropped one-liners like, “Is this the five o’ clock Free Crack Giveaway?” But Chappelle’s comedic impetus, his reasons for cracking wise and the content on which he chooses to speak, are certainly drawn from the same well of inquiry and curiosity as these great minds.

Consider Chappelle’s novel statement in his conversation with James Lipton on Inside the Actors Studio, effectively, an hour-long case study into celebrity: “You can’t get un-famous. You can get infamous, but you can’t get un-famous.” This is one

Baan Esaan’s doing things their own way to impressive results RON BECHTOL

Baan Esaan’s Albert Smith is a cocky, confident guy. Half Anglo, half Thai, he handily spins tales about trekking through Thailand’s vast Esaan province, learning about the cuisine and culture and teaching the locals a thing or two about cooking. The rest of us need to learn a thing or three, at least.

Esaan (sometimes spelled Isaan — or simply Isan) is the kingdom’s easternmost region, bordered on three sides by Laos and Cambodia. It’s poor, little visited, and, from most accounts, not necessarily high on one’s Asian bucket list (though locals and expats would doubtlessly disagree). The hardscrabble cooking that results from what The Rough Guide has called “appallingly infertile soil” is nevertheless both vibrant and subtle, qualities that are equally on display in Baan Esaan’s dining room.

At the head of Baan Esaan’s menu is somtum, the spunky-spicy salad of green papaya that is an Esaan specialty. (There are eight varieties of it on the menu at Somtum Der, a well-reviewed Isan restaurant in NYC.) As served here, the salad – laced with shredded carrot and presented with romaine leaves that accompany many dishes – is a marvel of limey, fish-sauce flavors played against the papaya’s clean crunch. Smith also offers an all-carrot version, which can be skipped, but the rendition with slivered Granny Smith apple is, surprisingly, a morethan-worthy alternative.

Laab, also known as larb, is another northeastern favorite, one that also happens to be the national dish of neighboring Laos. It’s available with minced beef, pork or chicken, and I have to assume that all three are treated equally as I’ve never made it past pork; it’s just too good. Lime, lemon grass and mint dominate, and the heat level can vary depending on the aggressiveness of that day’s chiles. My advice: stick to medium heat but be prepared to tolerate variances.

it’s served in a crafty little lidded basket … and it’s very springy. Sorry, not my thing. Formed into patties, lightly seasoned and grilled, it takes on a more appealing aspect and serves as a perfect platform for a smear of jaew bawng. You don’t know jaew bang?

Neither did I. On the menu it’s called “Esaan style spicy dipping paste,” but good luck with the dipping part.

As I said, the stiff and sultry paste is great for smearing, and once tasted you’ll want to slather it on everything — no holds barred. Also Laotian, it’s made from galangal (similar to ginger), chiles, what tastes like the equivalent of a little piloncillo and, wait for it, water buffalo skin.

Smith’s aunt, who makes it from a recipe that he claims not to fully know, actually prefers cow skin, he says. (This family enterprise, by the way, also finds Smith’s mother in the kitchen and his wife at the front of the house.) Do not be deterred. Order it. Help me convince them to bottle it.

The listed tomato dipping sauce, though perhaps actually dippable, is not currently available, FYI. Some of Baan Esaan’s other offerings are less in your face — the fried, chopped Baan Esaan short ribs for example. They’re chewy, mildly seasoned and great with the beer you will have thought to bring. Just a little

more aggressive, but nevertheless still sophisticated, are the marinated street-style wings. Right on the edge of being undercooked, they’re moist, moderately spicy and nowhere near as sticky or crusty as the (non-water) buffalo version. Outright great is the kaw moo yang, which translates as marinated and grilled pork shoulder.

This is traditionally made with pork neck (but, hey, the neck bone is connected to the shoulder bone) and is sometimes presented with a spicy fish sauce, lime, chiles, traditionally a little palm sugar and toasted, cracked rice.

Best of all, however, may be the Baan Esaaan sausages, cured, fried and bursting with lemongrass flavors. In a display of naked confidence, they are served only with lime and Thai bird chiles. Yes, you must.

The curious but cautious diner is directed first to the $10 lunch specials. There are three meat choices, among which I recommend the laab of choice, a somtum (the all-papaya will cost a dollar more), and, for an extra two bucks, you can do all the sauce slathering a small-sized ping pong ball of jaew bawng will allow. Fresh coconut juice served from the actual coconut will add $5 but pay you back in full in bragging rights. Nothing wrong with bragging when it’s deserved.

In the espresso tonic, served in a cortado glass, the coffee dudes take Austin-based Liber & Co. tonic syrup, infuse it with a juniper berry tea, add a splash of lime, splash a Topo and pull a shot straight into the glass over ice for a refreshing and citrusy pour.

“You can have the same cocktail experience at 9 a.m., but not feel guilty about it,” LaBarbera said.

Take a step further with the Coffee Old Fashioned, which draws funny stares. The drink starts with a double shot of the Kenyan Nyeri Othaya Peaberry beans as expressed via the EK 43 grinder and combines Crude “Sycophant” orange and fig bitters, with a very fragrant Woodford Reserve bourbon-smoked sugar from Bourbon Barrel Foods, Topo and orange peel garnish. At $8, most people won’t be drinking this every morning, but it’ll make coffee and cocktail connoisseurs swoon.

Prior to leaving our darling city to pursue my education in the morally vacuous stink hole known to as Austin, I spent my entire life in north San Antonio. Before seizing the first opportunity available to leave, I dawdled in the cultural wasteland of the San Antonio suburbs for 18 years.

Now, the passing of time has found me nestled snugly in the heart of Downtown San Antonio and the nightmare of my anodyne childhood is repressed more deeply in my subconscious than even the most persistent strain of castration anxiety.

But after surveying the land and finding it inhabitable, an entrepreneurial scouting party of independent coffee shops, restaurants, bars and boutiques have begun the dangerous process of reclaiming northern SA from the blight of stripmall-ism. Amongst the vanguard in that effort — though, admittedly, a micro-chain itself — is the Stone Oak iteration of Little Woodrow’s.

The Houston-based neighborhood bar chain is no stranger to San Antonio, having first put down roots on Babcock more than two years ago. Aside from its hangar-like aesthetic and uniformly buxom servers, the old location mostly relied on its notorious turtle races to attract patrons. Unfortunately, on my first visit to the original location, I failed to adequately deaden my Sarah McLachlan scruples with alcohol and as a result could really only appreciate the chelonian auto-da-fé as a sort of disturbing ritual representation of man’s uneasy dominance over Mother Nature. Needless to say, I did not return.

Several months ago, however, I heard that Little Woodrow’s was adding a new location at 1604 and Stone Oak Parkway. Since (along with a natural affinity for tortoise-shell) turtles and I also share a tendency for poor short-term memory, I decided that the bar’s newest campus would be worth a visit. As it turns out, it was.

Little Woodrow’s Stone Oak location is nearly unrecognizable from its Medical Center cousin. A sprawling outdoors area takes up nearly half the total acreage, where a verdant plume of Astroturf plays host to dozens of aggressively pastel lawn chairs. Games galore abound, including four cornhole stages and two ring toss arenas outside, as well as pool tables, electronic dartboards and weekly trivia nights inside. Several friends and I recently visited the bar with the sole intention of playing cornhole and found ourselves wholly satisfied.

Like many sentient micro-chains born in the era of craft beer, the blueprint for Little Woodrow’s — literally and metaphorically — has been streamlined by its bureaucratic overlords to maximize ROI (or returns on investments for the financially daft).

Weathered Souls. The phrase invokes images of someone who has been to hell and back but has come out ahead in the end. It is also the name of San Antonio’s latest brewing venture slated to open later this summer. The new brewpub will be located in northeast San Antonio at 606 Embassy Oaks, next to Laser Quest and Santikos Embassy 14.

Led by longtime San Antonio resident and businessman Mike Holt, Weathered Souls also adds head brewer and California transplant Marcus Baskerville, as well as assistant brewer and cellarman Seth Parker, formerly of Busted Sandal Brewing in San Antonio.

The three comprise the majority of the ownership group.

The guys met about a year-and-ahalf ago over beer, of course, and just seemed to gel. Planning for a brewery of their own came soon after. The Weathered Souls moniker does have a backstory. A fan of the mariners of old, Holt loved how antiquated ship logs referred to people as souls. This got him to reminiscing about his father and grandfather having been around the block and the name just came together.

Don’t expect the décor and vibe of the place to remind you of a weather-beaten port, though. It will have a bit of a worn look; however, the style will definitely have a largely contemporary feel. The guys don’t want to be pretentious, instead focusing on approachability in everything from the décor to the brews and the menu.

Finding a location that would allow them to realize their dream was not easy, then again, nothing worthwhile ever is. After driving down a plethora of streets looking for locations, the Weathered Souls crew found that

most everything was either sold or not available. It took a chance meeting with Santikos Real Estate to provide just what they were looking for.

“At first, we were only looking for one space,” says Baskerville. “When they offered us the adjoining space with first right of refusal, we had to take it.”

The menu will have small bites and appetizers, and they’re hoping to have dishes designed around the beer and vice versa, essentially brewing and cooking with specific pairings in mind.

Holt says they have a few twists in the works, including using spent grain in pizza crusts, house-made bread and more.

The brewing equipment purchased from Duetche Systems of North Carolina arrives in mid-June and Baskerville expects to begin testing and brewing soon after. The system includes a 20-barrel brewhouse with six 40-barrel fermenters.

“We also have a pilot system for small batches, which we plan to use as an opportunity for customers to design a beer they want and help brew it,” says Parker.

Expect the house brewed beverage options to include straight examples of various beer styles, including a blonde ale, porter, Mexican lager, hoppy pils, IPA and pale ale, as well as small-batch experiments and barrel-aged offerings that will surely satisfy the beer geeks and craft beer novices.

Weathered Souls looks to have as much contact with consumers as possible, making the brewpub model the obvious choice.

“The goal in the beginning is to stay as close as possible to the customer and expose them to as many choices as possible” said Baskerville “Once that’s established, we can look at distribution.”

The first time I heard Rogue Wave was on a sweltering, sunny day in the autumn of my youth. I was 18 years old and fresh out of high school with every opportunity in the world ahead of me. So, naturally, being the adventurous nomad I am, I was spending this formative time inside of my parent’s house watching Jenji Kohan’s debut series Weeds. This was a big episode. The pot-dealing mom’s oldest and most rebellious son Silas had just been dumped by his girlfriend. As he sat by the pool, moping about and searching for clarity in the water, deep and melodic guitar chords began to echo across my bedroom. Suddenly, someone started to coo out the most gut-wrenchingly truthful lyrics I’d ever heard. I remember thinking, “Wow, that is the most fitting song they could have played for that moment” and “I’ve got to know who that band is.” It was Rogue Wave and the song “Kicking the Heart Out” was off of their debut album Out of the Shadow.

Spearheaded by lead singer Zach Schwartz (aka Zach Rogue), the Oakland-based band has had their share of ups and downs since its 2002 inception. However, that hasn’t stopped Schwartz from propelling the group forward with a ferocity on par with the band’s namesake. Their discography is respectable, boasting six studio album releases in a little more

Starting and running a successful music venue is an arduous undertaking that has an extremely slim chance of ending in success. To call it a labor of love would probably do poor justice to all of the cursing and freaking-the-fuck out involved. A while back, when I asked Colin Wells – part of the punk triumvirate that opened and ran the recently departed Ten Eleven – if he had any advice for folks who might want to open a DIY venue in the future, he didn’t mince words: “I’d say ‘Don’t do it.’” He went on to clarify that it’s best to go into it with low expectations, a high tolerance for work and a focus on intangible forms of success.

To put it bluntly, if you don’t have some big capital behind you, you’ve got to be crazy to go into this business. So the question is: What kind of crazy? There are, no doubt, those who are crazy with overblown (likely unrealistic) notions of cashing in. There are those who are crazy with something akin to the gambling itch, who get off on trying to defy the odds. Kevin “The Rat Race Kid” Kosub is quite the character. Replete with a George Jones flat-top, a voice raspy enough to clean sink drains and a pension for collecting the controversial castoffs of America’s checkered past, the leader of local rock ‘n’ roll group The Blacktears and curator of the Sir Douglas Museum is an accomplished San Anto scenester. His small bachelor pad, affectionately referred to as the East Side Trauma Center, is tucked away off of W.W. White road and comes complete with a porch perfect for breeze-shooting, various Southern trinkets — from Richard Nixon buttons (the best is a DNC pin reading “Lick Dick in ’72”) to George Wallace magazine covers — and a shrine to the late, great San Antonio musician Doug Sahm.

Kosub is also one of the city’s premier record label executives. His label, Kevin Kat Records, has sold over 50,000 releases from many of the city’s finest musicians, from Kosub’s own group to Augie Meyers, Johnny Cockrell, Frank “The Wild Jalapeño” Rodarte and the legend himself, Doug Sahm. He’s also a friend to many of the city’s legendary musicians and a collector’s collector. Not only does Kosub maintain the Doug Sahm museum, which houses rare photos, personal items, treasured memorabilia and the obscurest of musical releases from the master musician, he also fills his humble abode full of pop culture paraphernalia that he finds fascinating and delightfully contradictory, a “clash of extremities.”

While standing next to a racially charged porcelain caricature of Louis Armstrong, Kosub tells me of his affection for Satchmo, “the man who invented pop music.” However, his main person of interest, without a doubt, is Sahm.

I asked Kosub, a man who has seen Ray Charles and Little Richard twice, Jimi Hendrix, you name it, why exactly Sahm is the one to which he’s devoted his time, dedication and so much love.

“When you see performers like [Charles and Little Richard], it gives you a whole new perspective of what your act is, what your act ain’t and what your act ain’t never gonna be. When you see masters, well, that’s what I saw in the [Sir Douglas Quintet]. Masters … Ever since, the Mavericks, the Blasters, everybody somehow tried, but none of ’em, none of ’em will ever do it like Doug and Augie … And Doug’s voice. A voice. A voice!

The museum is a small hallway-like room off to the side of Kosub’s house, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in content: There are pictures of Sahm’s two Rolling Stone covers, one autographed, naturally, candid shots of Doug with Jerry Wexler, Bob Dylan, and Hank Williams. The museum also possesses a pair of Sahm’s famous round-frame shades, a gift from Doug to Arturo “Sauce” González who later gave them to Marcelino “Coke” Martinez, numerous rare concert and album posters, several pictures of Kosub and Sahm together and roughly 30 of Sahm’s albums, from the obvious to the most obscure, including the coveted Renner recordings from Telarc label owner Jack Renner.

These flashy phrases and off-the-cuff one-liners color the speech and enthusiasm of Kosub, an old friend of (in)famous local curmudgeon and Taco Land owner Ram Ayala. He moves back and forth between Spanglish, old Ram colloquialisms and conspiracy theories, all the while showing his diverse EP collection and discussing his love of Johnny Mercer and Jimmy Reed. The Guy Clark number “Desperados Waiting for a Train” comes to mind. “He’s an old school man of the world.” A grade-A bullshitter. A conversationalist’s conversationalist that may make your ears prick up or hair stand on end, but he keeps rolling, challenging you, hoping you’ll keep up. Floating Action

Floating Action is the surprisingly apt moniker of Black Mountain, North Carolina native Seth Kauffman’s musical endeavors.

Since releasing two excellent albums under his own name in 2006 (Ting) and 2008 (Research), Kauffman has churned out five wholly unique and gemlike albums as Floating Action, including 2016’s Hold Your Fire. Kauffman, who records most all of the music himself, comes to Paper Tiger with a full band, still supporting the new album (as well as indie rock outfit Rogue Wave).

It is difficult to put your finger precisely on the Floating Action sound, at least in part because it never holds still, incorporating elements of reggae, dub, country, blues, and folk-rock into a sweltering yet lackadaisical Southern Gothic groove that is as possessed by eerie stillness as it is by fevered motion. Floating Action’s songs – ominous and impossibly footloose, fierce and delicate, menacing and innocently romantic – seem to twang and wind along like a boat traversing a damn near stagnant river, beneath the boiling milk soup of the Carolina sun. $15, 6pm, Paper Tiger, 2410 N.
