UNDUE BURDEN SCOTUS majority calls Texas abortion law an unconstitutional barrier that does virtually nothing for patient safety MICHAEL BARAJAS | @MICHAELSBARAJAS

ON MONDAY, a majority of U.S. Supreme Court justices affirmed what medical experts have been telling Texas lawmakers since the inception of the state’s omnibus anti-abortion bill: That strict regulations Texas sought to impose on abortion doctors carried virtually no medical benefit, all while shuttering clinics and making abortion access more difficult, if not impossible, for thousands of women across the state.

The High Court’s most important abortion ruling in more than two decades struck down two of the most stringent regulations on abortion providers contained in Texas’ H.B.2, which lawmakers passed in 2013 over

Wendy Davis’ famous hours-long filibuster of the bill.

The Legislature mandated that abortion doctors have hospital admitting privileges, which most providers can’t get, and that clinics adhere to hospital-like building standards that would require multi-million dollar facility upgrades that threatened to shutter all but about 10 of the state’s abortion clinics.

The court’s liberals, joined by swing-vote Justice Anthony Kennedy, ruled 5-3 Monday in calling those requirements an “undue burden” on a woman’s right to choose – in large part because the law appears to serve no other purpose than to shutter clinics and block abortion access. “We conclude that neither of these provisions offers medical benefits sufficient to justify the burdens upon access that each imposes,” Justice Stephen Breyer wrote for the majority. The law, he wrote, “places a substantial obstacle” in the path of women seeking abortion.

Nancy Northup with the Center for Reproductive Rights, which spearheaded the legal challenge to the law, told reporters in a conference call after the decision, “Without question today’s ruling is a game changer in what has been an unrelenting assault on women’s rights not just in Texas but across the country.”

The majority opinion highlighted the absurdity of the admitting-privileges requirement. As the Society of Hospital Medicine told the court this year, hospitals often condition admitting privileges on providers reaching a certain number of admissions each year. One El Paso abortion provider, for instance, testified that during the past 10 years, more than 17,000 abortions

were performed at the clinic yet not a single patient had to be transferred to a hospital for emergency treatment, much less be admitted.

“In a word, doctors would be unable to maintain admitting privileges or obtain those privileges for the future, because the fact that abortions are so safe meant that providers were unlikely to have any patients to admit,” Breyer wrote.

As for the requirement that abortion providers adhere to standards for so-called ambulatory surgical centers, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg pointed out that lawmakers haven’t required that doctors perform other, more risky procedures in such an environment – like tonsillectomy, colonoscopy, and in-office dental surgery. The majority opinion reaffirms the ruling of a lower court judge that oversaw the trial in the case — that not only is abortion among the safest medical procedures, but that there’s a “death of credible evidence” the law would make women undergoing the procedure any safer.

Critics of the law had worried that a decision in Texas’ favor would essentially give states carte blanche to regulate safe, legal abortion out of existence through so-called Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers laws, or TRAP laws. In her concurring opinion, Ginsberg said such laws, like Texas’, that do little or nothing to safeguard the health of patients “cannot survive judicial inspection.

In her opinion, Ginsberg highlighted what was at stake in the case: “When a State severely limits access to safe and legal procedures, women in desperate circumstances may resort to unlicensed rogue practitioners … at great risk to their health and safety.”

The big, headline-grabbing news to kick off Texas Democratic Convention earlier this month was actually quite a bummer for the party: Julián Castro, dubbed the “post-Hispanic Hispanic politician” by none other than the New York Times, probably wouldn’t be Hillary Clinton’s vice presidential pick. At least that was the subtext to Castro’s comments in a press conference leading off the convention weekend, saying the Clinton campaign wasn’t vetting him and that his chances of getting the gig were probably slim. “I’ve said for a long time I don’t believe thats’ going to happen,” he told reporters.

Less than a week later and Castro was apparently back in the running, with news breaking (via unnamed sources within the Democratic Party, of course) last 12 CURRENT • June 29—July 5, 2016 • sacurrent.com

week that San Antonio’s former mayor is indeed on a shortlist of candidates the Clinton campaign is considering for the VP spot (others include Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren). First, Castro wasn’t being vetted for the job. Now, apparently he is.

It feels like Castro has been on the pundit and political media shortlist for the VP gig ever since delivering the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in 2012. He quickly became a valuable political commodity, the idea being that his party would need a young, rising star like him to energize the sleeping-giant Hispanic voter base moving into the general election.

His chances as a VP pick, however, began to look shaky with the rise of Donald Trump as the Republican nominee. Wouldn’t the

prospect of a Trump presidency get more Hispanics to the polls than a relatively obscure South Texas city politician-turned cabinet member? Perhaps Castro was no longer needed.

If the state party felt deflated after Castro’s sort-of announcement earlier this month that he wasn’t being vetted for VP, that’s probably because the fledgling state Democrats desperately need something to draw out the voters needed to turn Texas blue. In addition to organizing problems endemic to the party (words used by Democratic insiders when describing to us their convention earlier this month: “unorganized,” “disappointing,” “shitshow”), Brandon Rottinghaus, one of the state’s more blunt political analysts at the University of

Houston, told us that if “Democrats don’t get a star, especially a Latino one, at the top of the ticket, they simply can’t bring out the voters they need.”

The state Democratic convention earlier this month made it pretty clear that Castro – and to a lesser extent his twin brother – is the biggest star the party has right now. There’s always the possibility that, if Castro isn’t picked for Clinton’s VP candidate, he’ll sit out an election cycle, bide his time and come home to run in Texas.

Which could spell more rocky years for state Dems in the meantime as they continue to struggle for relevancy in a deep red state. As Rottinghaus put it, “If the party’s stars won’t move, the party won’t move.”

n the 1990s, thousands of San Antonians either died in drive-by shootings or were sent to prison because of them. Murals on the city’s west side still echo the violence and pain wrought just two decades ago.

“Around the time that I graduated from high school, my hometown was the drive-by capital of Texas,” U.S. Rep Joaquin Castro told his colleagues on the House Floor last week. Castro joined Democrats in an unprecedented protest, staging a day-long sit-in to block business in the House until the Republican majority agrees to a vote on gun control measures in the wake of this month’s mass shooting at an Orlando gay club. Among the bills that have stalled is one that would block people on the FBI’s terrorist watch list from buying a gun – a measure (which, as many have pointed out, remains problematic) that failed in the Senate earlier this week.

In his floor speech, Castro referenced a dark time in San Antonio’s history. In 1993, there were 1,262

drive-bys here – meaning that, at its peak, the drive-by capital of the state saw on average more than three shootings a day. The number of juveniles arrested for violent crimes in the city tripled between 1987 and 1994, while the number of minors arrested for unlawful carrying of a firearm doubled over that same period.

As a 16-year-old living at the Alazan Apache Courts told a Texas Monthly writer in 1994: “We get really drunk. We get all hyped up, and we do a drive-by.” As the magazine reported: “Gang members get their guns from pawnshops or gun shows; after they pick out their weapons, a companion who is over 21 buys them.”

Such gun violence crested in the 1990s in San Antonio, but that doesn’t mean it’s gone. Early this month, two separate shootings on opposite sides of the city claimed the lives of two young girls. Police say a bullet hit 7-year-old Iris Rodriguez in the back of the head as she was walking home with her family on the West Side on June 1. An hour later, another bullet struck 5-year-old Ana Garza in the head while she

was sleeping inside her home on the southeast side — she died a week later. Weeks later, a man was shot and killed in what appears to be yet another deadly road rage incident in a region that sees a lot of them.

Castro, in his floor speech during last week’s sit-in, referenced those cases to underscore the problem that he said Democrats are trying to address. “There are times when our jobs become uncomfortable,” he said. “If you are here representing Americans in Congress, you signed up to take tough votes. And if you believe that terrorists should be able to hold guns, then put your name to that vote. If you don’t believe in background checks, then put your name to that vote.

Take a vote.”

The Democrats’ sit-in ended in an abrupt, chaotic screaming match early last Thursday morning when, according to the New York Times, “Speaker Paul D. Ryan barreled over Democrats’ objections and adjourned the House.” The chamber has no votes scheduled until July 5.

While a hideous reminder of unvarnished hate, the shooting also underscores another stark reality for many LGBTQ youth: Safe spaces are really hard to come by. That’s especially true for gay, trans and queer teenagers who are homeless or at risk of ending up on the streets, oftentimes because of family rejection or parents who kick them out because of who they are. According to researchers, LGBTQ youth are vastly overrepresented in the homeless population; according to one national survey, they comprise about 40 percent of people served by agencies that work with the homeless. The national outreach organization Stand Up For Kids estimates that out of about 1,000 homeless youth in the San Antonio area, half identify as LGBTQ.

The need for a safe space for the most vulnerable kids from an already marginalized group is what led to the creation San Antonio’s Thrive Youth Center, which houses and helps LGBTQ youth who would otherwise be on the streets. It’s one of just four shelters in the country specifically geared toward helping that population, despite research that hints at the much larger need.

The single hallway on the ground floor at Haven for Hope, San Antonio’s sprawling homeless services campus, has become a refuge of sorts, says Thrive Center director Sandra Whitley, who most of the dozen or so residents affectionately call “Miss Sandy.” “These kids don’t have anywhere else to go, and most, especially the transgender ones, would simply not make it in a regular homeless shelter,” she told the San Antonio Current. “Many other places, if you show up and you’re trans, they’ll just say they’re full, even if they’re not.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human

Services has acknowledged that LGBTQ kids live in a society that “discriminates against and stigmatizes” them, making gay, trans and queer kids more vulnerable to, say, depression and other mental illnesses. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one national survey found that “lesbian, gay, and bisexual youth were more than twice as likely to have attempted suicide as their heterosexual peers.” While there’s a dearth of good studies on trans youth, one suggests that as many as a quarter of trans kids report suicide attempts.

Researchers worry that many of those who flee family or are kicked out of their homes because of rejection are eventually forced into “survival sex” in order to get food, clothes, or a place to sleep.

Whitley says homelessness exacerbates other problems LGBTQ youth already face. “There’s an additional stigma that comes with being homeless,” she said. “Imagine you’re trans and homeless … It’s easy to feel like no one will ever

look at you like a normal person.”

Which is probably why many of the young people who have landed at Thrive say it’s not just a shelter, but rather a safe space where they can explore and discover who they truly are.

W

hile Jessica Zuniga didn’t start to transition until she was a teenager, she knew she didn’t feel like a boy growing up.

When Zuniga was 10, her mother forced her older brother to ask if she was gay. Zuniga said yes, not really sure what she was. “I found out from a very early age that who I was upset my mother, that I wasn’t going to be the son she wanted,” Zuniga told the Current. “I found out early on that a mother’s love is not unconditional.”

While Zuniga’s mother was distant from then on, her father bounced in and out of prison. By the time she was a teenager, she’d started to come into her own, dressing more androgynous. The change didn’t exactly attract good attention in the Rio Grande Valley, where she grew up for most of her childhood. The year before Zuniga’s senior year in high school, she was raped. While she’d hoped for some sympathy from her mom, she remembers being at home one day, crying with a friend not long after the assault.

“You choose to act the way you act, to dress the way you dress,” Zuniga recalls her mother saying. “You deserve what you get.” Years later, Zuniga’s mother would tell her she was afraid to let her be around her little sister.

One time, when her father visited after getting out of prison, he told her, “You know you’re going to die of AIDS one day, right?”

Researchers say family rejection is the main reason some LGBTQ kids end up in some incredibly volatile and vulnerable situations, cycling in and out of homelessness or staying with people who might take advantage of them.

Aiden Schmidt, a 20-year-old trans man now living at the Thrive shelter, says he bounced in and out of shelters and for a while lived out of his car. “I didn’t have anywhere to go,” he said. “My family’s not understanding of who I am.”

Zuniga floundered her last year of high school and eventually enrolled in a community college program in the Valley. That’s when she became aware not only of the rejection LGBTQ people face, but also the violence they’re often subjected to. She read for the first time about the death of Matthew Shepard, the 21-year-old gay man brutally beaten, tortured, and left to die in Wyoming in 1998. “I started to feel this anxiety because I realized people were being murdered because they were like me,” she says.

Zuniga eventually moved to San Antonio after her first year of college, saying her mother’s rejection had put her in a deep depression. She was mid-transition, didn’t have a place to stay, and reached out to aunts and uncles in the area for help. They wouldn’t return her calls. Things got harder when finding a job mid-transition proved to be more difficult than she’d imagined.

“I was wearing makeup and skirts, but my hair was still short,” she says. “I was trying to be my true self, but the problem is I wasn’t ‘passable’ enough for people.” Most employers would look at her paperwork and insist on calling her by her “actual” name, she says. One asked if she could come back in pants and stop wearing nail polish. When she finally found one part-time job, her

boss wouldn’t let her use the restrooms on site, instead directing her to a building next door that had a private one.

W

ithout anywhere else to go, for a while Aiden Schmidt bounced in and out of one of the city’s remaining homeless shelters, Prospects Courtyard, a part of Haven for Hope that many say takes on a prison-like atmosphere at night. Schmidt said he felt like a sitting target.

“I’m still biologically a girl, but I look like a young boy,” he said. While transitioning, he didn’t feel comfortable using the men’s restroom and shower — “I’ve had grownass men beat on me because of what I look like ... You think I’d be safe in there?” he says. The couple times he accompanied his girlfriend, another homeless woman, into the women’s restroom, he says other men chased and tried to assault him.

Zuniga, on the other hand, says she knew she couldn’t live in a place like Prospects. So she did what she says many other women like her are forced to do: sex work.

“I did it to survive,” she says. “And I hated myself after every time.” Now on hormones, her appearance was becoming less androgynous, more feminine. However, the depression grew worse when she realized her identity was a fetish for other people. “Guys will hit on you and say you’re beautiful until they realize you’re trans,” she says. “As soon as they realize that, I’m a sexual object.”

It was sex work that ultimately led to Zuniga’s arrest two years ago. She didn’t have a place to stay and had gone two days without eating. It had been days since she’d taken a shower since, as a trans woman, she didn’t feel she was safe taking one in any of the city’s homeless shelters. While she was walking near San Pedro Park, a guy pulled over and flagged her down.

“After talking for a while, he said he’d give me money if I just showered with him,” she says. “I didn’t really have another option that night.”

The car ride was taking too long, and Zuniga couldn’t figure out where he was taking her. Eventually she saw the lights from a police cruiser in the rearview mirror.

B

y the time Athena Rose started to transition, she was 16 and had just been put in a state-licensed treatment center for foster kids. It’s unclear why she was put there, other than her volatile family background — taken into state custody at age 4, she was ultimately abandoned by the family that adopted her and her sister before cycling back into state care.

“I was just starting to dress feminine, I wasn’t even that confident yet,” Rose said. She started experimenting with more androgynous clothes and a bit of makeup — eyeliner, mascara, maybe a little lipstick. “They stopped that real quick,” she said of the facility staff.

“Basically, they were like, ‘You can’t be doing that shit here.’” Eventually, she entered a group home for kids about to

age out of foster care. With nowhere else to go, Rose was about to end up on the street before she found the Thrive Center. At 18, she says she feels lucky to have found a place so early on in her life that supports her transition.

“So many people transition so late in life,” she says. “I found a place to discover myself early. I get to be myself for most of my life now.”

Sandra Whitley, the center’s director, says it’s not just that LGBTQ kids are more vulnerable and likely to end up on the street because of who they are, but also that homelessness can make it difficult for them to process and understand that identity. As Rose put it, “Growing up, I had a lot of other stuff going on, so I didn’t have a lot of time for self-reflection.”

“I feel like I’ve always been a girl, but the places I’ve been wouldn’t let me acknowledge that,” she said. “I can do that here.”

Not long after her arrest for prostitution, Zuniga ended up back at the Thrive Center. It was there she found help not only expunging her criminal record, but also legally changing her name and gender markers.

“It’s given me a certain amount of freedom,” Zuniga, now 21, says.

“Somebody can look at me, look at my documents, and see me — only me, not who I used to be.”

More than that, Zuniga says the Thrive Center has given her a safe space to process her transition and realize who she truly is. Before, she says, she contemplated suicide, at risk of becoming yet another statistic.

Zuniga has since found a steady marketing job and plans to go back to college to finish her degree in psychology. The Thrive Center, she says, “gave me someplace safe, a place to work on myself.”

With renovations in the works, Blue Star Contemporary won’t rejoin First Friday festivities in Southtown until August 4, when it opens shows by Thomas Cummins and Kirsten Reynolds in a satellite space at 112 Blue Star.

But thanks to an array of galleries in and around the Blue Star Arts Complex, July’s First Friday packs a punch with artful investigations into everything from race and class to escapism and analog technology. Challenging transphobia within queer spaces POLLY ANNA ROCHA

When I was asked to attend a friend’s queerfriendly Studio 54-themed party last year, I hit up my favorite thrift stores as soon as I could to find the perfect Bianca Jagger-inspired ensemble.

The night of the party came, my look was red hot, and I spent the majority of the night dancing and laughing with my queer peers.

As the evening progressed, my dogs began to bark, so I said my usual goodbyes and headed towards the door.

To my surprise, new guests were just arriving, despite it being damn near 4 in the morning.

Before I could give a passing hello, one of them, a cisgender gay man I had seen at another queer event, looked at me and said frankly, “You know you’re a man.” He chuckled and walked away as I stood frozen, immobilized by my sudden fear. Had anyone else heard him? Was anyone else laughing? My thoughts raced as I took a deep breath and tried to regain my composure, but the damage was done.

This isn’t the only time I’ve experienced transphobic remarks from cisgender members of the gay community, and I highly doubt it’ll be the last. In fact, it’s fairly commonplace to hear cis gay and even cis lesbian folks mimic the bigotry of their hetero counterparts.

This is part of a greater issue of transgender exclusion that has been plaguing our communities since they formed. Transgender people have always been at the forefront of political and social revolutions, but we always seem to get the short end of the stick That night at the Studio 54 party was an example of how trans women are treated within queer communities if they don’t ‘pass’ for cis. In other words, I didn’t look feminine enough for that guy’s liking so he decided to bring me down a notch.

This sort of mistreatment reflects the ideologies of trans-exclusionary radical feminism, popular amongst certain gender-critical lesbian groups. Terfs, as they’re called, believe that trans women are merely predatory men who appropriate femininity for sexual and social gain, and they have no problem using their harmful rhetoric to dehumanize us.

These are the same women who refuse to allow trans lesbians and other woman-attracted trans women into women-only spaces. These are the same women who bully transgender men into de-transitioning, claiming that they are merely butch women with extreme body dysphoria.

And yes, I did say trans lesbians, because the assumption that trans women can’t be lesbian is entirely 32 CURRENT • June 29—July 5, 2016 • sacurrent.com

false, as is the assumption that trans men can’t be gay.

And those of us who are trans and queer constantly have our sexualities called into question.

Given that I am a trans woman, it’s assumed that I’m only attracted to men, and I’ve even had more than one gay man imply that I only transitioned to sleep with straight men. This has never been the case, as I’ve had multiple sexual and romantic relationships with men, women and everyone in between. Trans people’s sexualities are apparently always up for debate.

Because we are lumped in with the whole of the LGBTQIA* community, it is assumed that we are catered to by gay spaces, but the reality is trans people are and have always been an after-thought.

Look, I don’t want to go to a space where cis gay men openly use the t-slur, but I also don’t want to go to a straight bar just to get gawked at by some bro trying to figure out what’s under the hood. At the very least, gay spaces provide some kind of safety. At least they once did.

With the national conversation about LGBTQIA* rights being almost entirely centered on cisgender gays, lesbians and occasionally bisexuals, trans people are put on the back burner of a movement that was started when Marsha P. Johnson, a Black trans sex worker, threw the

first brick at Stonewall.

There is even less of a conversation on non-binary, agender and intersex people who have essentially no concise model for how to navigate safe spaces in any city, let alone San Anto.

When a trans person expresses any upset over being excluded, we are labeled as having too much anger or as being jaded or bitter. I, for one, have been adamant about calling out organizations for using cis-centric language that alienates trans women. Can you guess the response? Let’s just say that sometimes it takes a cis person repeating my exact words in order for the message to be received.

So what can you do to make sure trans voices are heard? Center us in your conversations about LGBTQIA* civil rights.

When the government makes trans-exclusionary bathroom laws, express the same outrage as you did when it opposed gay marriage. Stand beside the trans people in your community, and ask us if we’re okay. Make sure to call out transphobia when it is safe to do so.

Don’t forget that we are among the most vulnerable in our community and that every one of us is an individual deserving of dignity and respect, despite our presentation. It’s that simple.

SOMOS ORLANDO To be young, gay, Latino and invisible GREGG BARRIOS

In the wake of the Orlando massacre, filmmaker Jesus Treviño invited Latino writers gay and straight to reflect on the tragedy by guest blogging on his website Latinopia, an online clearinghouse dedicated to Latino arts, culture and history. San Antonio poet and playwright Gregg Barrios responded with this essay, reprinted here courtesy of Latinopia.

It was hard at the onset to process with any gravitas the Orlando tragedy. The first reports made little mention of the names of the 49 dead and the 53 wounded. Instead, the focus was on the deranged man who perpetrated this heinous act. But hasn’t that been the way media sees us or perhaps doesn’t see us — our invisibility?

By Monday, we learned that Saturday at Pulse was Latin night. The majority in the club were there for an evening of música, alegria, amistad y amor. When the names of the victims were released, over 90 percent were Latino.

Most were Puerto Rican Americans. The fact most were gay became more important to the mainstream media than their ethnicity, and in turn, mostly white gay talking heads were interviewed to represent the greater gay community.

Others used the Orlando tragedy to promote their own agenda. Was this a hate crime? Was it a terrorist act?

Our presidential candidates either demonized ISIS or called for “ramping up the air campaign” — and they used the gun issue (pro or con) as the solution to prevent this from happening again — yet neither candidate went to Orlando to grieve con las familias.

Closer to home, we mustn’t forget that homophobia and machismo are often deeply rooted in our own communities. In many quarters, gay sons and daughters have been shunned and denounced by their own families.

Yet in this moment we should comfort and offer sympathy for we too mourn their loss, our loss. They were us. We are them. To its credit, Spanish-language television did exactly that. It gave an intimate look of how this horrific act affected our community. Many bilingual survivors spoke in español to Univisión and in English to the mainstream media, belying the myth of the monolingual Latino that Hollywood and TV often portrays.

In the Hollywood film Stonewall, a retelling of the seminal event in the modern gay liberation and rights movement, its white gay screenwriter and its white gay director cast a corn-fed blond hunk to throw the first stone against the cops. Gay history tells us otherwise.

It was Puerto Rican activist Sylvia Ray Rivera and people of color that were instrumental to its success.

Today, a street that intersects with Christopher Street is named Sylvia Rivera Way. In HBO’s The Normal Heart, the AIDS crisis and its responders were portrayed as overwhelmingly white. Again, gay people of color were absent despite the toll AIDS took on all communities.

Sadly, only a few uncredited Latino actors were featured in a crowded disco, dancing away oblivious.

Is it any wonder then that few are aware of (or choose to disregard) the discrimination and invisibility Latinos have faced from both the straight mainstream public and the white gay community?

Ditto health services for people of color. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Latinos are disproportionately affected by HIV. Most cases occur in young gay and bisexual men. The number of new infections among African Americans and Latinos has increased while the number among white gay males has decreased. Many have rightly criticized how people of color have been underserved in the funding and in the securing of life-giving medications as well as outreach in education and prevention.

In a time when mass shootings lead newscasts, when innocent people are killed in churches, office parties, a marathon, and now a nightclub, we often find ways to quell our outrage and move on to the next breaking news. Hashtags shorthand our anger: #blacklivesmatter, #Oscarssowhite and #GayMediaSoWhite. Yet the Latino community, now the largest minority group in the U.S. and the majority

group in California, is often relegated to the toxic and racist Hollywood stereotype of illegals, gang-bangers, rapists and the like.

The U.S. is slowly becoming brown. Projections by the U.S. Census Bureau state that by 2044, half of the U.S. population will be people of color. Yet for Latinos today, we are still underrepresented in our Congress, in our colleges, in film and the performing arts, in our literary lives, in our history books, in the recognition to our honorable military service to this country.

So what does this tragedy in a gay bar offer in order to create a groundswell for Latino empowerment? What do we do to honor the dead and the wounded other than lighting candles and having them in our thoughts to bring about real change we can believe in?

We have power in numbers to move from the outside into the forefront of the national conversation.

Social networks are a valuable tool in getting issues that concern us as Latinos as well as pointing to our accomplishments. Our Congress must give aid to our fellow citizens in Puerto Rico that is also going through an economic crisis. We should be outraged by the internment of refugees from Latin America and the broken immigration system.

In the arts, we need to advocate for films and TV shows that utilize our true stories, as well as works based on our brilliant writers, from Sandra Cisneros to Junot Díaz. More people behind the cameras and those with the power to green-light Latino projects. Strong Latino roles for our actors but also roles that transcend color or stereotype. A Latino playing Hamlet. A Latina cast as Evita.

Nonprofit groups in the arts and performing arts in Latino communities often apply for funding stating they will reflect its underserved community in works and audience building. Much too often that rarely happens.

We need to hold their feet to the fire in public forums since it is our tax money that they use to gain funding.

In the news media, major newspapers (The New York Times) and TV networks (including PBS) can and should recognize that the voices and reporting of Latino professional journalists and commentators make them more trustworthy. The media can also do better to cover the arts, from literary critics to film reviewers to sports writers and pundits. If Latino Americans are an important part of our citizenry, then our take on the world is a necessary part of the conversation.

Activism as truly engaged citizens is a valuable tool in our quest for equality, for then we become part of the solution, we offer valuable and unique insights to issues that beset us all as a nation, as a people. Love will always trump hate. United we can be invincible, and one day no longer invisible. We are Orlando.

With the arrival of a single white raven to Winterfell, the Long Winter has officially commenced.

In the season six finale of the series that has seemingly divided the world into two camps – those that follow the show religiously and everyone else – the great battle between the living and the dead, fire and ice, draws nearer.

Jon Snow has taken back Winterfell from the psychopathic head of the house of flayed men, Ramsay Bolton – oh, what a treat it was to behold his gruesome demise – with what we believed was his half-sister Sansa at his side.

However, the lineage of the former Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch is finally made clear. Initially believed to be the bastard of Eddard Stark and a random bar maiden, Snow’s real heritage as the son of Ned’s sister Lyanna and Rhaegar Targaryen is confirmed. This is a grand revelation in that it makes Jon’s claim to the Iron Throne much more substantial and, perhaps more importantly, makes him a nephew to Daenerys Targaryen, as well as a Stark – another clash of fire and ice.

Daenerys, now aided by her newly-proclaimed Hand of the Queen, Tyrion Lannister – whose lineage is also questionable considering his father’s dying oath that Tyrion is not his son – has amassed her army and is heading to Westeros with her fleet and three dragons to claim the Seven Kingdoms. Surely, this confluence of bloodlines and ambitions – Dany’s desire to rule, along with the greater goal of surviving the Long Winter and the ever-growing militia of White Walkers that comes with it – will find aunt

Dany, as the mother of dragons, is sure to be a great asset in the oncoming war of ice versus fire, particularly as other than the dozen or so swords of Valyrian steel left in the world, dragonglass (and presumably dragon’s fire) is the only thing that can kill a White Walker or their monarch, the Night’s King.

Also, as Dany has left behind her former suitor Daario Naharis and much dialogue is paid to the building of alliances via marriage, Jon Snow, if his heritage is not made known quickly enough, may find himself the husband of his aunt, although that wouldn’t be too absurd or incestuous for Game of Thrones. Not by a long shot.

Meanwhile in King’s Landing, the suicide of Tommen and the immolation of his queen Margaery and the Faith by wildfire – perhaps another weapon in the battle against the frozen hordes of zombies – propels Cersei to the Iron Throne as the sole monarch. While her children were the supposed inspiration for all of her dastardly deeds, with no one around to comfort or love her save for the father of her children and brother, Jaime, there’s no telling what Cersei is capable of now. Perhaps, with her children gone, she may find some inkling of compassion and reason, especially in the face of a common enemy of White Walkers, although it’s unlikely. One thing’s for certain, between the new King of the North Jon Snow, Daenerys and her army of Unsullied, Dothraki and Ironborn and House Tyrell, Cersei’s demise will come as no surprise should it transpire in season seven.

Whether the ruling houses can put aside their differences and the perpetual infighting and unite against the shared threat of White Walkers will really be the test of their survival. This cause, the struggle that could unite them all, will hopefully be the great equalizer. To draw non-fictional parallels, if and when the human race is threatened by a greater enemy than itself, say climate change or an extraterrestrial attack, the gravity of our situation should work as a fulcrum for bonding us together, from the most repugnant fascist to the peaceseeking pacifist. Whether we are capable of doing so is another issue and one that the writing team of David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, as they have officially taken over the duties for the show from George R. R. Martin, are sure to expound on in the most entertaining way.

For, if we cannot take anything away from Game of Thrones other than a riveting way to kill an hour every Sunday, then we, too, just as the century-old civilizations that seem to crumble weekly, are sure to meet our mutual demise once we face a threat greater than ISIS, an occupying western force or Donald Trump. The polar ice caps are melting, the climate is rapidly fluctuating, species are dying off at a rate that rivals the extinction of the dinosaurs – the writing is on the wall. If you think that Martin, Benioff and Weiss are playing games, you’re missing out on the greater lesson and may perish just like the myriad of kingdoms that are wiped from the series’ history in the blink of an eye, the twist of a blade or the slow melting of ice. sacurrent.com • June 29—July 5, 2016 • CURRENT 39

> Do you have 10 minutes and a hankering for fresh seafood without a costly trip to your nearest sushi joint? Then please, please make this Hawaiian poké salad.

The recipe comes from chef Luis Colon of Folc (226 E. Olmos Drive, 210-822-0100), who puts a spin on the traditional Polynesian fave in one of his dinnertime appetizers. Known as po-kay or po-kee — never poak — the salad is an extremely simple preparation of yellowfin or ahi tuna. The easiest comparison would be ceviche, though the tuna is still essentially raw when eating and not cooked with citrusy acidity.

Though poké is a big island staple that’s trickled into the mainland, and garnered articles such as “Why is poké so hot right now?” from The Los Angeles Times, “The 10 Best Poké Restaurants in Los Angeles” from LA Weekly, and “Uber-Trendy Build Your Own Poke Bowls Are Headed To Arlington” from Eater Dallas as early as this year, finding poké in SA is a bit more difficult.

Fujia Japanese Garden (9030 Wurzbach Road, 210-615-7553) carries one on their salad menu for $12, as does Wildfish Seafood Grille (1834 N. •Easy peasy marinated raw ahi, crispy wontons, avocado and wasabi soy sauce. And the staff at Folc’s take deviates from the avocado-filled variations while delivering a fun sight to behold.

Colon starts with four ounces of sushi-grade ahi tuna that’s chopped uniformly into half-inch cubes. From there, he adds 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 teaspoon of sesame oil, 1 teaspoon of diced green onions, 1 pinch of minced ginger and another of chili flakes. He gently folds the tuna over using a spoon and tops it with a puffed rice paper that gets a sprinkling of onion ash (the onion is left overnight on the grill).

It’s an elegant and restrained dish — the chili flakes and ginger give it a bit of heat and the minimal soy sauce lets the tuna shine through while the sesame seeds add a hint of nuttiness. The puffed rice paper (which Colon fries up using canola oil) helps with presentation, but you’re really there for the delicate flavor of the tuna. You can also serve your bowl with nori chips, cucumber slices or on a bed of greens.

When making this at home,

make sure to chat with your local fishmonger to get the freshest yellowfin cut-to-order (you’ll find it for $24 per pound at Central Market), and make sure you’re asking for the freshest tuna available. Get the marinade ready just before serving as you still want the fish to taste like fish.

If you’d rather have you seafood cooked through with the aid of fresh lime, San Antonio thankfully has plentiful options for ceviche.

El Bucanero recently added a slew of ceviche-based concoctions including a octopus-filled ode to El Chapo in tostada form, and a singleserving version of La Gran Pachanga that features a lone Modelo topped with camarones ahogados and flanked by ceviche-stuffed avocado halves. By now, if you’ve spent even the shortest amount of time on the St. Mary’s Strip, you might recognize the model of a Danny Delgado-owned bar: cleaned up interiors, serious new additions in the way of brand new woodwork, unpretentious, but spooky vibes, attention to detail and reasonably priced drinks. As of this weekend, San Anto bar-goers can add The Squeezebox to Delgado’s impressive empire of cantinas.

This time Delgado has teamed up with co-owners Ryan Dietrich, Osvaldo Ordonez, Julio Lopez and Aaron Peña to open the bar at 2806 N. St. Mary’s St. inside the former home of Laura’s Floral Design Boutique. Though the group was originally looking at the spot where Michael Sohocki’s Il Forno is now located, The Squeezebox belongs on the Strip with its bar and restaurant brethren (Faust Tavern, Hi-Tones, La Botanica, Phantom Room are all within walking distance of each other). The lease for the new spot was signed on Halloween and the group set out to turn a flower shop into what they’ve dubbed “The sounds and soul of San Anto on The St. Mary’s Strip.”

The effort has been DIY to be sure. Peña, who began his turn as bartender at The Friendly Spot Ice House before dabbling into cocktails at The Brooklynite, will lead the bar side of things. Before anyone panics: No, The Squeezebox isn’t a cocktail bar.

“We’re not gonna blow anyone’s mind with cocktails,” Peña said, while adding he’ll still carry correct ice and fresh juices in case anyone cares for libations of that sort.

Instead Peña will focus on speed and volume, with good reason. The Squeezebox holds 99 people, and will have to

contend with Delgado’s winning record with a sprawling patio and its own parking lot (a rarity on the Strip). On the music side of things, Lopez of Los De Esta Noche will work on perfecting that sound that will blend Tejano, conjunto, oldies, blues and soul under one roof. The San Anto sound will reverberate opening night on Friday, July 1 with Eva Ybarra and Santiago Jimenez Jr. and cornetist and homegrown jazz legend Jim Cullum will have his own night once The Squeezebox finds its rhythm.

The DIY labor extends into the décor, which keeps in line with Delgado’s other bars but sticks with the accordion theme.

Artist Christopher Montoya is responsible for the majority of the signage and artwork, which includes a hand-painted mural next to the stage. The dimly lit spot also includes antique light fixtures and four ol’ timey accordions, which Delgado turned into lamps, that now sit above each booth. The piece de resistance for now is a Joe Avila-created neon that succinctly describes the joint, but don’t let me spoil it for you.

Outside, the patio will easily seat more than 25 people, and will likely feature a cash-only bar on busy weekend nights. Though the programming is still in the works, expect a barbacoa and Big Red brunch in the future with music by the Texamaniacs.

For Peña, 28, opening The Squeezebox has been about buckling down, working together and getting work done for the past eight months.

“We’ve had a lot of hype because of where we are [on the Strip] people are eager,” Peña said, “but we’ve been pretty secretive about who sees what’s going on the inside.”

While “spritz” is a generic name for a type of cocktail – a bitter aperitif plus wine plus carbonation – the Aperol Spritz has come to own the title. The coral-colored, fizzy blend of prosecco (Italian sparkling wine) with Aperol (a less-alcoholic, not-as-bitter version of Campari) became widely popular around World War II, and to this day remains one of the most popular summer-afternoon sippers of choice. It’s got a lot to recommend it: Aperol is only 11 percent ABV, and prosecco is usually about the same, so you’re not going to get unexpectedly wasted on these – besides which, carbonation and ice are always pleasant on a hot day.

One might wonder why a German word is used for a 100 percent Italian drink, though. Well: “Spritz” means “spray” in German, and the name comes from the 19th-century Austro-Hungarian practice of adding a splash of water to Italian wines (which were too strong for the refined German palate, apparently).

It made me think that we ought to do an actually German spritz, sao I tried mixing together some Underberg, the Jägermeister-like German digestif, with some sekt (German sparkling wine). Authentic as hell, and possibly pleasing to some tastes, but not for me, thanks – it was way too sweet. And a Spanish version could conceivably be mixed from cava and a dry sherry, though I didn›t try that – my favorite summer drink is still rosé, which is just now widely hitting wine shops for the season, so I decided to go French with this Remix.

There are sparkling rosés, but I didn’t have one on hand (and I don’t really like most of them), so for carbonation I just added a splash of sparkling mineral water – Perrier to stay in the French theme, bien sûr. For my bitter aperitif, I chose Dubonnet Rouge. Dubonnet, a French wine-based liqueur, gets an unfairly lame rep, I think (though, admittedly, it is the favorite tipple of both Queen Elizabeth and her mother). It’s got the quinine bitterness of Campari with a much lower percentage of alcohol by volume, and if you’re a regular reader, you know by now how much I appreciate a low ABV. Spritzes – should we call this French version an atomisé, or perhaps a plouf?

Lone Star Beer Texas Heritage Festival brings good cause, outstanding musical lineup to the Aztec JAMES COURTNEY

For the second annual Lone Star Beer Texas Heritage Festival, said National Beer of Texas and Feeding Texas (fka Texas Food Bank Network) once again join forces to bring us a sweet lineup of music. Proceeds will benefit Feeding Texas’ mission to combat hunger in the Lone Star State through raising awareness and providing food relief, with the goal being ultimate food security for all.

But, with tickets priced at just ten bucks a pop and a tremendous bill of performers, you don’t exactly have to be a full-fledged philanthropist to get behind this cause. This year’s performers include two acts with highly-anticipated albums on the way, Okkervil River and Shovels & Rope, one act with a recently released solo foray, Matthew Logan Vasquez of Delta Spirit, and one of Saytown’s most beloved homegrown originals, Girl in a Coma. Let’s take a quick look at why you’ll want to catch all four acts.

OKKERVIL RIVER • Okkervil River’s eighth studio album Away, the follow up to 2013’s somewhat underwhelming effort The Silver Gymnasium, is due out on September 9.

The album’s lead single, the existentially pained yet beautiful and hopeful “Okkervil River RIP” has, on account of its loaded title, caused some concern among fans, worried singer-songwriter Will Sheff might be hanging up the moniker under which he’s released a constant barrage of hyper-literate, and unabashedly vulnerable, indie folk-rock since the early 2000s. In speaking with the San Antonio Current last week, however, Sheff indicated that there’s no need to worry. “If you think Okkervil River is over, you’re

right,” Sheff cryptically explained, “But it has only died to be reborn.” As Sheff worked on Away, of which fans should get a solid preview at Sunday’s show, he was seeking respite from a number of personal and professional difficulties (including the death of his beloved grandfather) and wasn’t thinking of it as an Okkervil River album per se. It took a few years for Sheff, who is essentially synonymous with Okkervil River, as the act’s only constant member, to realize that “This is an Okkervil River album and it needs to be released.” At the encouragement of friends, and with the help of a newly recruited incarnation of the band, Sheff finished and will now release the album. According to Sheff, Away – which, upon my first few listens, sounds like it may be the best thing he’s ever done – is the result of his search for “a new path in the ashes of what came before” and a concerted effort to make something “universal, inspirational, even hopeful.” Sheff is excited to tour behind the album and to play older songs with the fresh perspective of a new band.

SHOVELS & ROPE • Husband and wife duo Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, known as Shovels & Rope (a nod to the duo’s countrified, blue-collar, soul-rock sound), are putting in work. One of the brightest rising stars on the national Americana scene, Shovels & Rope is set to release Tiny Seeds, its fifth album since 2008, in October. We can only hope the duo will give us a taste of what’s to come in its set here. However, new music

or not, Shovels & Rope is, probably through a workhorse mentality that’s kept them on the road almost constantly, one of those live acts that simply cannot be missed. On stage, the duo’s clever, fiery and genre-straddling songs take on levels of emotion and layers of soulful nuance that makes them impossible to deny.

MATTHEW LOGAN VASQUEZ • A veteran of the indierock side of Americana soul, via his longtime band Delta Spirit, Matthew Logan Vasquez comes to town in the midst of a massive tour supporting his first solo LP Solicitor Returns. The album is the type of dusty, Crazy Horseworshiping psych-rock affair, replete with chunky riffs and even a piano-based closer, that you might expect from an Austin boy back home on hiatus from his main band.

GIRL IN A COMA • We’ve spilled a great deal of ink in these pages reminding folks that Nina Diaz, Jenn Alva and Phanie Diaz’ punk-rock trio Girl in a Coma ain’t nothing to fuck with. It is, however, worth mentioning that at this point, Lone Star Beer Texas catching the trill trio in action, let alone in Heritage Festival feat.

Okkervil River, Shovels San Antone, is something of a rarity. Just under a year ago the sonic powerhouse of Travis Hild (Heavy Foot) and Nick Long (Lonely Horse) seemed poised to blow up – before they spontaneously combusted, that is. The shamanistic, dynamic duo, after shopping their demo around to the few but mighty major record labels still alive, seemed destined to open up tours with Jack White, score coveted slots at ACL and visit the set of Ellen to showcase their riveting live performance – something they are actually in the process of working on.

Enter good friends with bad intentions, or bad friends with good intentions. Either way, the duo ended up stuck in a contract with Santiago Ortega and his Nouveau Riche label, fighting for control over their music and what they want to do with it.

Now, the dust seems to have settled and the duo will be fulfilling their legal obligations with Nouveau Riche by releasing one final EP on the label. And, according to Long, it’s going to be a doozy – “heavy as fuck,” to use the singer and guitarist’s own phrase. Not that Hild and Long have been sitting on their hands.

Long has been busy around town working under the moniker Nothing Chief, his sentimental side project, and Hild is one-half of the percussion powerhouse in his and Long’s varsity rock band, The Red Legs, which consists of several other SA rock ‘n’ roll savants.

These outlets, coupled with the light at the end of the contractual tunnel, have reinvigorated the band, even if

the journey was less than ideal.

In all fairness, the relationship with Ortega, who reached out to the band to try to remedy the rift, did result in some pretty heady trips out west. The duo recalled sitting in the office of Jake Ottman, Vice President of artist and repertoire at Warner/Chappell, their single “…and the Number 3” playing through the office speakers. They remember getting word from a few offices down that Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach was digging what he was hearing.

After their success at the Afropunk music festival in Brooklyn in 2014, at which the duo won the battle of the bands, representatives with ties to Dolly Parton and the Jonas Brothers reached out to the pair, looking to manage their rapidly escalating careers.

In what is one of the more enviable stories of their encounters with the hillbilly chanteuse, Long recalled speaking with Parton and being moved by her sincerity and strong desire to have the band handled by her management company.

These are all pretty awe-inspiring experiences.

However, they are no different than the close-butno-cigar encounters of thousands of bands across the United States. Lonely Horse’s brush with fame illustrates perfectly how rare it really is when someone “makes it,” as well as how fickle show business can be, even when the talent, image and content are there. But, the duo aren’t losing any sleep over what might have

been. Instead, they feel liberated, ready to get back into what Lonely Horse likes to do best: kick out the jams.

As for those that may think the band is trying to capitalize on the popularity they sparked post-hiatus, Long maintains that they never officially threw in the towel. “We never said we were broken up,” he declared.

“We always said it was our last show for awhile …

And then, I don’t know … Can’t say one thing without it meaning another thing.” However, for those familiar with the nearly religious experience of Lonely Horse’s live shows – something more akin to an animistic pagan ritual via blues-based stomp rock than your typical threechords-for-thirty-minutes snooze-palooza – it should come as no surprise when the duo is back drawing 300 rabid followers to each show – what feels more like a tribal nation than something as clinical as a “fanbase.”

As for the future, when asked about what the duo have in store, they can’t help but laugh. “Get off this label. Just blow our load all over the place,” replied Hild, jokingly. Currently, that means the United States and Japan. The band is in the process of setting up their U.S. tour, slated for the fall, and will also head out to the land of the rising sun for two weeks. As for the EP, look for it to be released September 23.

Despite the false start, it seems that Lonely Horse is finally out of the gate. Freshly shoed, back in racing form and chomping at the bit. Now we’ll see what this pony can really do. sacurrent.com • June 29—July 5, 2016 • CURRENT 61

It was really uncomfortable and a little threatening when — after establishing that I lived alone — he asked me out. I guess I use this as an excuse so as not to hurt their feelings, but also to shut the conversation down as quickly as possible if I’m feeling vulnerable.

Is this a harmless white lie, or a major cop-out that would offend actual lesbians? Can you suggest some better strategies for when you’re feeling cornered by a dude you’re not interested in?

I shared your question with this person — a woman I thought was an actual lesbian — because I wasn’t offended by it either, but wanted to check with an actual lesbian just to be safe.
