Why Texas Republicans won’t say “hate crime” after Orlando massacre.

The worst-ever mass shooting in a country that’s seen a lot of them happened at one of Orlando’s most popular gay bars early Sunday morning, when authorities say a man armed with an assault rifle and pistol killed at least 50 people and injured dozens more.

And with word that the gunman, identified as 29-year-old Omar Mateen, called police during the attack to pledge allegiance to ISIS, U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul, an Austinarea congressman who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee, quickly called the shooting at the Pulse night club “the worst terrorist attack on American soil since 9/11” and “a sobering reminder that radical Islamists are targeting our country and our way of life.” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott responded not only by flying a Florida flag from the governor’s mansion, but also by tweeting out a list of attacks blamed on extremists who were Muslim.

But you probably won’t see a rainbow or trans flag flying over the governor’s mansion this pride month, since acknowledging the Orlando attack as both terrorism and a hate crime targeting a specific, vulnerable group would put politicians like Abbott in a pretty awkward spot.

Abbott is among those conservative leaders who have fought vociferously to deny people in the LGBTQ community equal rights and protections under the law. He fought a marriage equality case in his former role as Texas Attorney General, and as governor has joined a lawsuit challenging the Obama Administration’s stance that public schools that receive federal Title IX funding should be accommodating to transgender students.

Abbott has also sharply criticized local non-discrimination ordinances passed by cities to protect, among other vulnerable groups, LGBTQ Texans. During the heated debate over Houston’s equal rights ordinance last year, which opponents labeled a “transgender bathroom predator” bill, Abbott repeated the mantra of “no men in women’s restrooms,” an anti-trans slogan that was echoed in attack ads across the city featuring images of little girls being stalked by pedophiles in public restrooms.

Court mixed with the rhetoric targeting local equal rights ordinances could lead to very real danger for the LGBTQ community. Earlier this year, in response to a wave of attacks on gay men in Dallas’ entertainment district, Equality Texas CEO Chuck Smith told the Guardian, “We are concerned that the heightened level of animus that surrounds the presidential campaign and the media in general … can fuel higher rates of violence against LGBT people.”

According to media reports, the gunman in Sunday’s attack in Orlando may have been mentally ill and appeared to harbor hatred for gay men – his parents told CNN that he was outraged after seeing two men kiss in Miami. Florida was among the first states where conservative lawmakers tried to target transgender rights at the state legislature, something conservatives in Texas have promised to do when lawmakers reconvene in Austin in 2017.

State Rep. Diego Bernal, among the many local elected officials who spoke at a vigil in Crockett Park Sunday night, said you can’t draw a direct line between the rhetoric directed at the LGBTQ community and Sunday’s attack.

But he called the increased rhetoric, particularly the venom directed at trans people, an “accelerant” to that type of violence, the kind of language that can further incite someone who is, say, unhinged enough to pledge allegiance to ISIS. Anel Flores, a local artist, real estate agent and writer, said Sunday’s shooting felt personal because it was a “reminder that we, as a community, are a clearly-defined target for that kind of hatred and violence.”

Following Sunday’s mass shooting, and in light of news that police in California arrested a man who they say was headed to a West Hollywood Pride festival armed with assault rifles and possible explosives, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus told people gathered at Sunday night’s vigil that they could expect to see a beefed up police presence around the Main Street strip of gay bars for the foreseeable future. The crowd applauded and thanked the chief, welcoming the extra patrols.

Even if some Texas leaders won’t acknowledge the Orlando attack as targeting a specific community, it seems local law enforcement will.

With more than 2,000 miles of missing sidewalks and San Antonio’s largest-ever bond looming, City Council debated last week how much of the proposed $850 million should be used to fix missing sidewalks.

At a budget policy setting session Wednesday held in a second-floor conference room at the newly renovated Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Capital Improvements Management Services Director Mike Frisbie said staffers proposed allotting $50 million from the potential bond to fix 2,177 miles of missing sidewalk.

That’s a lot of cash, but District 5 Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales didn’t think $50 million would solve San Anto’s sidewalk blues. “We have sidewalk gaps, but where do broken sidewalks fit in or sidewalks that are nonfunctional because of utility poles,” Gonzales asked.

Then Frisbie gave council the real total: “I failed to mention...there’s about $1.1 billion in sidewalk needs.”

City law currently requires that property owners maintain sidewalks, which is often difficult for them, Frisbie admitted, explaining that San Antonio does have $200,000 set aside to be used for 50/50 matches in a program to encourage homeowners to fix sidewalks, which has had few takers over the years.

Gonzales bristled at that, referencing a rural neighborhood in her district that sought sidewalks, but couldn’t afford the $9 million it would take to build them.

The high-price tag was because there was no related infrastructure either, like curbs and drainage, Frisbie said.

Gonzales’ district, which is in southwest San Antonio, has 150 miles of missing sidewalk. Of the Alamo City’s 10 districts, four have more than 250 miles of missing sidewalks, one is missing more than 300 miles and another is lacking just over 200 miles. In addition Gonzales’ district, two others don’t have approximately 150 miles. The district with the least amount of sidewalk gaps is missing just over 100 miles.

Councilman Roberto C. Treviño, an architect who represents the downtown area, said that all equates to roughly 35 million-square-miles of missing pedestrian infrastructure.

The vast majority of gaps can be found on the South, East and West sides of San Antonio, along with the urban center. City Manager Sheryl Sculley said her office would recommend increasing potential funding from $50 million to $100 million.

San Antonio cop arrests, berates and threatens to fight man for being “disrespectful.”

Should police be able to arrest you, threaten to fight you, berate you and then haul you off to jail simply for being “disrespectful”?

That appears to be what happened to Eloy Leal last August, according to video the San Antonio Police Department recently released to the media showing SAPD Officer Matthew Belver goading Leal to fight, at one point even removing his handcuffs. The video also captured a 13-minute lecture from Belver, in which he calls Leal “a disrespectful, trashy human being” and a “dumb fuck.” The video, which defense attorneys call a stark example of police escalation, comes as Police Chief William McManus faces criticism from the local police union over his goal to implement more deescalation training and other possible changes to his department’s use-of-force guidelines.

Leal was charged with jaywalking and interfering with the duties of a public servant near the 3100 block of Chamita, where Belver had been dispatched in the early morning hours of August 2, 2015 to respond to a shooting. The video, which was first obtained by KSAT last week, begins with Leal handcuffed and sitting in the back of Belver’s cruiser as the two trade insults.

Eventually Belver walks around to the back seat to remove Leal’s cuffs.

“As soon as they come off, I’m going to beat your ass,” Belver tells Leal, whose demeanor changes.

Leal starts calling Belver “sir” and eventually mutters “I didn’t mean no disrespect man.” Meanwhile, Belver continues to prod: “I thought you were gonna fucking fight like you said … Come on, bro … You had me all excited, I was ready for it. I thought there was gonna be a good fight.”

Belver’s own words captured on the in-car video hint at why he was so angry with Leal: The guy was rude to him at a crime scene.

On video, Belver says Leal walked past him as officers processed the scene, pointing out some bullet casings that police hadn’t yet collected. According to Belver, here’s what Leal said that got him so incensed: “Hey cop, can I walk through here? Hey, some

investigation you guys did.”

In the video, Belver strikes a defensive tone when he talks about the bullet casings he evidently missed or failed to collect, calling them “old” and not connected to the night’s shooting. “But that’s beside the point,” he tells Leal. Even if they were evidence from the night’s shooting, Belver tells his suspect, “Who doesn’t make mistakes? Everyone makes mistakes at their job.” (McManus, in a letter suspending Belver months later, determined that the officer failed to adhere to department guidelines for collecting and processing physical evidence at a crime scene.)

Belver continues: “You did not call me officer. You have never called me officer until I said listen, shut the fuck up and get in the car. … The way you addressed me was incredibly disrespectful.”

At another point, Belver tells Leal: “I would never talk to anybody like that. That’s why you’re going to jail and I’m not. And you had the chance to run, to fight, whatever, but you didn’t. Because not only are you stupid, you’re a coward.”

Belver then moves his attention to Leal’s appearance: “You can look at you and see how trashy you are and disrespectful.” When Leal says something about invoking the Fifth Amendment, Belver responds by mocking his education level, saying, “You wouldn’t even know what the Fifth Amendment is. … You don’t know anything about history. I doubt you even have a high school diploma.”

“I don’t,” Leal says. “I’m sorry, man.”

“You are sorry,” Belver responds. “A sorry human being. That is correct.”

San Antonio criminal defense attorney Branden Lopez called the video troubling not just because Belver tried to escalate the situation by removing a defendant’s handcuffs and asking for a fight, but also because it appears Belver had no legitimate reason to arrest Leal in the first place.

“If you believe the officer’s own words, Mr. Leal was arrested because he was disrespectful,” Lopez told the Current. “Are we in the business of arresting people

just because they’re rude? If that’s the reason Mr. Leal was taken to jail, it appears he in no way violated the law and shouldn’t have been arrested in the first place.”

On the video, when Leal asks why he’s being arrested, Belver even says, “I’ll think of something.

How about public intoxication, pedestrian in a roadway.

Whatever else I can think of.” While Leal still had to pay a jaywalking fine, authorities dropped his interfering-with-police charge.

McManus handed Belver an indefinite suspension in February, saying, among other things, that Belver violated the department’s code of conduct. Still, thanks to the city’s agreement with the local police union, McManus doesn’t have final say on the matter.

Belver and the union will challenge the suspension in an upcoming arbitration hearing. San Antonio Police Officer’s Association President Mike Helle didn’t return our calls for comment, but he told KSAT this week that Belver doesn’t deserve to be fired. “I think it was the end of his shift, he was tired, he works graveyards and I think this guy just got underneath his skin and it was something that he shouldn’t have let that happen to him,” Helle told the station.

Defense attorney Lopez says the video of Belver’s interaction with the suspect is further proof SAPD needs to adjust its use-of-force policies and training to emphasize de-escalation, something McManus has said is one of his goals despite intense opposition from the union.

After reviewing the video, Lopez says it’s easy to see how quickly the situation could have turned violent or even fatal because of Belver’s actions. At one point on the video, Leal tells the officer, “Hey, you can beat my ass but don’t fucking kill me,” letting out a nervous chuckle. After Leal refuses to fight, Belver responds: “Honest to God, I was gonna pull you out … and then you can walk away. You kick my ass, take my gun, shoot me in the head.”

Lopez’s advice: Nobody should ever take the bait from an officer who’s itching for a fight. “Nobody wins in that situation.” sacurrent.com • June 15—21, 2016 • CURRENT 13

Mr. Gallegos sits with his hands in his lap, occasionally moving his fingers to the music playing through his headphones. He looks distinguished in coordinated khaki shirt and pants, his straw cowboy hat resting on the table. A nurse with the M.U.S.I.C. Project, a San Antonio nonprofit, asks if she may listen to the song playing on the iPod that has him entranced and smiling. She takes the headphones and listens for a moment, handing them back to Gallegos as a new song comes on, audible from a short distance away. “Aiiiyyeee, Mamacita!” he shouts, a broad smile spreading across his face.

The M.U.S.I.C. Project, which stands for Musicians Uniting and Supporting in Communities, is a local nonprofit started by Tim and Candyce Slusher, a licensed geriatric nurse as well as the secretary of M.U.S.I.C. Project. In the past, the group has worked with Pre-K 4 SA, placing musicians in each of their four campuses to foster an interest in music before grade school.

Recently, however, the group’s attention has been refocused. They now primarily function as a liaison for the Music & Memory Program, another 501 (c)(3), like M.U.S.I.C. Project. Founded in 2008 by Dan Cohen, the program seeks to provide assisted living facilities and their residents with iPods and personalized playlists.

It’s Patch Adams meets Alan Lomax, a musicological attempt to improve the quality of life for San Antonians diagnosed with dementia.

However, as the state of Texas licenses 1,200 nursing and assisted-living facilities and San Antonio, itself, has 98, the task at hand can often particularly daunting, even with the Texas Department of Aging and Disabilities Services (DADS) using fines collected from nursing home citations to bankroll the Music & Memory Program for the time being.

Candyce Slusher recalled working with one man, originally from Sweden, who suffered from dementia and, with no family in the area, used to just mumble to himself in his native tongue much of the day. Slusher called him one of the facility’s more challenging residents, throwing off headphones when something he doesn’t like comes on the iPod. Often he stares out the window in silence.

However, on a recent visit when Carlsson was given his iPod at Stonebrook Manor, the facility where he and Gallegos reside and the only San Antonio home currently running a full-scale Music & Memory Program, Carlsson was engaging with staff, smiling and talking. Through hours of musical guesswork, seeing what Carlsson responds well to and what makes him uncomfortable, Slusher and her team compiled a playlist specifically for him, and he appears to be loving it.

The Music & Memory Program, however, hasn’t been without critics, the most outspoken of which have been music therapists. On its website, musictherapy.org, the American Music Therapy Association claims the program may be misleading to nursing home facility administrators, who may wrongly equate the program with traditional

music therapy. The association points out that people involved in the Music & Memory Program only undergo four-and-a-half hours of training, which it says is a red flag. “We are adamant that this is one more example of misleading the public by implying this is a professional certification program,” the association writes on its website. “[I]n reality, it involves 3 webinars, totaling 4.5 hours of training … AMTA is concerned that nursing home administrators will confuse ‘personalized music’ with a clinical music therapy treatment program.”

Still, Slusher and Music & Memory proponents respond to that criticism by saying their program is just one of many treatment tools that fall under the umbrella of music therapy.

“Music & Memory just makes you feel normal, just makes you feel at home,” says Slusher. In no way does the program pretend to be traditional music therapy, she told the Current. “Music therapy is very specific. For instance, when someone is in the dying process, playing a song at 60 beats-per-minute actually could help regulate breathing. If somebody has Parkinson’s and they can’t walk today, playing a song at 90 beats-per-minute can actually help them to walk better. That is actual therapy, it’s very different.”

Sharon McCord, the Activity Assistant at Stonewood Manor, further highlights one of the hiccups that the Program has faced. For the many nursing home residents who don’t have close friends or family who visit often, staff has to employ a hit-or-miss approach when trying to figure out what music to play for each resident.

Sometimes that can take hours, McCord said, time that staff doesn’t always have.

Which is why the M.U.S.I.C. Project is always seeking a range of volunteers. The non-profit is always looking for people with some kind of experience with healthcare, dementia care, social work or psychology, or students interested in those fields to find out just what music the residents enjoy, Slusher says. But the group also needs anyone willing to sit down and teach some nursing home

residents how to use an iPod. Despite criticism from the AMTA and music therapists, McCord, who utilizes the program on a daily basis, is grateful for the program’s effectiveness in soothing the residents and brightening their day. “The music is just a very therapeutic thing for them. It promotes calmer environments for them, as well. It’s quick. It’s not something that we have to take time for medication to kick in. It’s immediate … It works wonders.”

Just last month, the M.U.S.I.C. Project held an iPod drive, raising $3,200 and 7 iPods. Although generous, the Slushers and their organization are not content to sit idly by hoping for state money. They are willing to come collect any iPods that can hold a charge from donors to see that they get to San Antonians in need. Sure, getting music back into the lives of these folks is not going to cure these debilitating diseases, but in doing so, they are helping to make the remaining years of those that suffer from dementia not only more bearable, but more enjoyable.

Though he’s usually despondent or displeased when engaging with the nursing staff, it seems Perry Como and bossa nova have lit some sort of glow inside of him. He begins talking to a nurse, responding to her questions about how he came to the United States, telling her his name and talking to the best of his ability. The cumbia beat serves as the many-faced god of music: when properly applied, the stutter-step triplet is an assassin on the dance floor and can mold to any genre. To invoke this deity of a rhythm, Cumbia Fest rallies three masters of the form. El Rebelde del Accordeón, Celso Piña (pictured) is a pioneer of crosscultural cumbia, fusing ska, reggae and hip-hop styles. A Classy Broad

A week after Hillary Clinton broke through the metaphorical glass ceiling and became the first woman in U.S. history to secure a major political party nomination to become POTUS, San Antonio gets a chance to see its own homegrown story of female empowerment and inspiration in the form of a documentary film on Marcia Nasatir, one of the first women to find success as an executive at a major Hollywood studio during the 1970s. Originally from San Antonio, Nasatir, who is now 90 years old and lives in Santa Monica, California, attended Thomas Jefferson High School and went on to graduate from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism in 1947. During a time when women were rarely seen in leadership roles in Hollywood, Nasatir became the first female vice president of production at United Artists in 1974. She worked behind the scenes on a number of Oscar-winning films, including Rocky, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Apocalypse Now and later as an executive producer on The Big Chill. Comic Andy Kindler has played recurring roles on Everybody Loves Raymond, Bob’s Burgers and Maron, but he’s at least as famous for calling Louis C.K. pretentious and claiming he’ll pay $1 million to anyone offering proof Whoopi Goldberg is funny. Not long after artist Chuck Ramirez died in a Southtown cycling accident, Sala Diaz created the Casa Chuck residency to commemorate one of San Antonio’s most beloved contemporary artists and bons vivants. Since 2011, writers, critics and curators from across the world have lived in Ramirez’s former residence and studio space, the goal being to make his old home an incubator for true social connectivity and creative exchange across all borders and cultures. The result: San Antonio artists who have been included in exhibitions in Juárez, Leon, Mexico City and Paris.

That residency came to an abrupt halt on May 2, when an electrical fire ate through a wall inside the home, destroying part of the bedroom and bathroom. Ramirez’s belongings were packed into boxes and two shows were canceled. The first was by Sterling Allen, the most recent exhibiting artist, who co-founded and directed the artist collective Okay Mountain in Austin; Allen had driven back to Austin the day before the fire and wasn’t hurt. The second was supposed to be a show by M12, a collective out of Denver that had even planned to have its board retreat at Casa Chuck.

“All programming has halted, and we are currently shuttered and without power,” Sala Diaz director Anjali Gupta told us. “Scheduled artists, residents and guests are currently in limbo.”

Making structural improvements to

the house that encompasses Casa Chuck became one of Gupta’s primary goals as soon as she became Sala Diaz director last year. Gupta, who told us the building had fallen into “disrepair,” said the small nonprofit had actually planned to fix problems with the foundation, electrical wiring, plumbing and roof in phases over the next three years.

Last month’s fire scuttled all that planning. To make matters worse, Gupta says she recently met with an insurance claims adjuster who already indicated that some major damage won’t be covered — like the dormer and part of the electrical system, which is clearly not safe, that runs through another part of the building.

All of which means a lot of uncertainty for the Casa Chuck residency, says Gupta. “I would like to get the gallery up to snuff and reopen as soon as possible, which will all have to be done via donations, emergency grants and discretionary funds,” Gupta told us. “The apartment will take much longer, as there is so much more to be addressed. I cannot estimate when it will be back to normal.”

In the meantime, others have stepped up to fill the void left by the fire. On Sunday, June 12, current Artpace resident Andy Coolquit offered his studio/gallery space to Sterling Allen, who installed his site-specific exhibition “Shadowy & Still” at Artpace just as it was at Sala Diaz before the fire.

–Tim Armstrong “It’s elation when you can do something, particularly when no one gives you a chance.” –Howard Davies Ah, the racetrack. That coliseum of economic and spiritual brutality, where fortunes are made, wagered and lost, livelihoods are forged or floundered and the grand attractions are sometimes shot in the head at close range, pending a veterinarian opinion. These hallowed grounds, where the privileged and the pathetic often meet in the same human form, have united people under the banner of avarice and desire for centuries; some for glory, some for money, some for social clout. For many, the opportunity to rein lady luck in, based on sheer chance or some guarded theory on thoroughbreds and their riders, flies in the face of the American Dream’s premise of work hard, get rewarded … hard. However, for those of the owner echelon, peacocking in hats that could humble the same grounded fowl, to whom money is of no concern and the races offer a place to be seen as opposed to a shot at the grand, glorious come up, this supposedly sinful recreation is an honored and cherished pastime.

In Wales, the setting for the classist pony doc Dark Horse, horse breeding and racing has been an exclusive hobby of the noble gentry since the 1700s, something closed to the lowly peasant class of which main characters, Janet and Brian “Daisy” Vokes, proudly belong. Coming from a family of show budgie bird breeders, pigeon racers and Whippet trainers, Jan has been instilled with a proud sense of egalitarianism via competition. That, coupled with the paltry pay and humdrum existence of provincial poverty, was a source of inspiration for Vokes.

“All through my life, I’ve never actually been me.

As a little girl, I was Kelly’s daughter. When I started school, I was Trevor’s sister. When I got married I was Daisy’s wife. And I wanted to make my mark. To prove it to myself more than to anybody else … I worked in a factory for 23 years. You know, nobody really wants to do that for a living, you do it for the money. So, outside of that, anytime that you’ve got, you have to do something that takes you away from it.”

One day, while working as a barmaid in the local working man’s club, Jan overheard a regular, Howard Davies, discussing his previous ownership of a racehorse and the 5,000 pounds he lost on the venture. Jan’s sense of competition was piqued. “I knew nothing whatsoever about racing and such, but I did know that these sort of people, these well-to-do sort of people, liked to keep the sports to themselves. They like to keep us commoners out, I think.”

Inspired by her commitment to make her mark and her aspirations to not only compete but succeed in the “sport of kings,” the Vokes’ purchase a used-up old mare named Rewbell, who never actually won or placed in a race, for a mere 300 pounds. Now, with an actual horse in their possession, Jan, Daisy and Howard organize a “syndicate” of thirty of the bar’s regulars to pool their money in order to pay for the breeding of Rewbell with an American stallion named Bien Bien, who, at the time, held a standing track record at Hollywood Park.

The result of the husbandry was a gelding, a gangly, spindly little thing, all knees and elbows, that they would name by majority vote Dream Alliance, or simply, Dream.

For the first months of the horse’s life, Dream “trained” in a shoddily constructed pen of boards and chicken wire, fed on the scraps of the bar patrons’ supper. However, once Davies, a former accountant, worked out the

finances, the collective sprang for Dream to train with one of the best horseracing programs in the country under Philip Hobbs for a small, manageable contribution from each.

Dream’s successive career, clearly one for the record books considering there’s a documentary about it, pits him against the greatest racing horses in the world.

Proud, pedigreed possessions of monarchs, titans of industry and the spoiled progeny of some great something-or-other. His unbelievable successes unite the small village of retirees and modest laborers in an inspirational Cinderella story of one unlikely horse and the community that loved him. It’s a simple tale of humble beginnings and grand aspirations, of pride over profit and inclusion over income. The winnings never even come into consideration for the group – they ended up with something like 1,000 pounds each upon Dream’s retirement, far less than they ever put into his training.

Add fresh asorted fruit cut into pieces for each mold. Freeze for 8-10 hours.

Brunch, NOLA-style The corner at St. Mary’s Street and Mistletoe Avenue is months away from a new restaurant via the owners of The Cookhouse. Chef Pieter Sypesteyn shared the news of NOLA, named after his New Orleans, Louisiana roots, a new brunch spot opening at 111 Kings Ct. by the end of the year.

NOLA will offer full-time brunch five days a week from Tuesday through Saturday. For Sypesteyn, a lack of options other than awesome breakfast tacos was what prompted him to look into opening his own spot. The chef, who previously worked with Andrew Weissman at Il Sogno, first opened Where Y’at Food Truck in 2011 and later The Cookhouse in 2014.

Fans of the Creole/Cajun New Orleans kitchen can expect similar flavors at NOLA, but don’t go searching for more muffalettas or po’boys.

“It’s going to be casual. It’s not going to be like a taco joint where you can get a complete breakfast for $4, but we’re hoping to keep prices at $15-$20 per head,” Sypesteyn said.

Though the space, a former homebrewing supply store, will require a thorough build out — with design work by work5hop’s Rebekah Perez and Jay Louden — Sypesteyn’s NOLA menu is coming together already. He mentioned

a few items that will adhere to traditional New Orleans brunch themes with fun spins including the grillades and grits with fried oysters, a NOLA-style eggs benny with pain perdu (Nawlins-style French toast) topped with a griddled boudin patty, a poached egg and a ladle of gumbo. Other items will include a hash brown cake with fried egg and guajillo gravy, brabant potatoes, malted waffles and a ham and cheese waffle.

You won’t find bottomless mimosas or any alcohol for that matter, but NOLA will serve fresh juices, coffee drinks and cane juice. A small a la carte market featuring The Cookhouse’s house-made sausages and cured meats is also in the works.

NOLA will feature both indoor and outdoor seating for about 60 brunchgoers (that’s 11 more seats than at The Cookhouse).

Pop-Up Sammies Sandwichserious, a new pop-up venture by chef Dave Rizo and creative/ musician Mauricio Gudiño held its first sandwich party at Attagirl on June 6.

Sangwish fans will get another chance to sample the funky creations, like the tasty fried curried chicken sandwich with chutney ketchup along and thinly sliced pickles with the savory vindaloo spices, on June 20 at Attagirl (726 E. Mistletoe Ave., 210-437-4263).

Openings & Closings Parisian Fare In Lincoln Heights The Lincoln Heights area welcomed Cafe Dijon (555 E. Basse Road, Suite 113, 210-822-2665), which opens this Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the former home of Cafe Salsita.

Opened by executive chef Iverson Brownell of CanSurvive Cuisine, front-of-house manager/pastry chef Christopher Jara and kitchen manager Christopher Nieto, both formerly with the St. Anthony Hotel, Cafe Dijon will add breakfast, lunch and dinner options available for dining in and pick-up. The opening menu includes a la carte items such as the Frittata du Jour, Greek yogurt parfait, egg dishes and toasts (a Ratatouille with fried egg, gouda and her-roasted veggies with a tomato basil puree already sounds like a winner).

A main course menu also includes heartier lunch options including pizzette du jour featuring house-made focaccia bistro salads and sandwiches such as a duck club, roast beef, pimento cheese and more with prices ranging from $7 to $12.

On the sweet side, Jara will showcase scratch-made artisan pastries so expect eclairs, tarts and cakes, available by the slice or whole.

The 1,700-square-foot restaurant, which will seat about 70, will also feature an educational component to go with their local, fresh and seasonal tagline. Evening cooking classes will be offered with pointers on how the food comes together and how to replicate

at home for foodies that aren’t afraid of their stoves.

Opened by Joey and Cecy Rodriguez, the tiny shop can produce up to 54 flavors or artisanal and handmade paletas.

Though the shops were announced in late 2015, build out on the historic homes has been predictably slow.

You can’t just take a home built in 1883 and toss a kitchen in there. More tenants, including the Danny Delgadoowned Con Safos, and a brewpub, OK Eishaus, will also open inside postbellum homes.

Joey, 28, who learned the paleta craft from his father at La Gran Michoacana, usually whips up new batches of whatever’s needed three or four times a week at an off-site commercial kitchen in the city’s South Side. His day starts early in the morning with trips to H-E-B to hand-pick the produce and he’ll make it into the shop at 10 a.m. From there, a 13-hour day ensues with Joey chopping and blending all the fruits, pouring them into molds, placing wooden popsicle sticks in each and packaging every single paleta by hand.

Walk anywhere in Germany and before long you’ll stub your toe on a stolperstein, a tiny brass “stumbling stone” intentionally raised above ground level that’s inscribed with the name and life dates of a victim of German Nazism.

A commemorative effort begun by German artist Gunter Demnig in 1992, the work’s creation marked the 50th anniversary of Heinrich Himmler’s 1942 “Auschwitz Decree,” the order that officially began the mass deportation of Jews to concentration camps.

The stones’ purpose is to provide a constant, intentional reminder of the atrocities of the Nazi regime.

Here’s the rub(s): First, the basement bar is only open Wednesday-Friday from 4:30 to 11 p.m. ; second, they are regrettably cash only (though an ATM is onsite). The bar offers no food outside of bagged chips, and the frugality of their drink selection brings to mind scenes of Weimar Germany’s bout of hyperinflation that forced hapless citizens to burn their money for fuel.

Despite the lack of frills, the Rathskeller was packed during my visit. With a “gypsy jazz” ensemble playing period-specific live music, museum-worthy historic photos tacked haphazardly to walls, a derelict building that begs to be drunkenly wandered, and drink prices so low that they attract everyone from local lawyers to passing vagrants, the Hermann Sons fixture is without a doubt unlike anything else in the city, perhaps in the state. In the pantheon of summer cocktails, the mojito ranks high – the first printed recipe dates from the 1930s, in a cocktail menu for Sloppy Joe’s Bar in Havana, and Cubans know from hot, humid weather. Just like Texans, right? So naturally this rum beverage is a classic summer-day refresher – nicely balanced between tart and sweet; minty and fizzy and possessed of a devastating bite if you overindulge.

There’s not much improving to be done on a well-built mojito. But I’m not a big fan of mint, and lime is such a common cocktail ingredient, that I thought I’d tweak things by swapping in a more interesting citrus-and-herb combo. This isn’t a refined cocktail, something you strain into a coupe when you’re feeling fancy – mojitos are meant to be fun and casual and a little messy, so don’t sweat the technique. Start with the recipe below, taste, and add more of whatever you want.

Classic 10-12 fresh mint leaves Half a lime, cut in wedges 2 teaspoons sugar 1 1/2 ounces white rum 4 ounces seltzer or soda Place mint leaves and a lime wedge at the bottom of a tall glass. Muddle to crush mint and lime. Add the rest of the lime and the sugar, and muddle again. Do not strain. Fill the glass 3/4 full of ice. Pour in the rum, then top off the glass with soda water. Stir, taste, and add more sugar to taste. Garnish with lime wedge.

Remixed 1 ruby grapefruit, cut in half-moon slices 1 ounce fresh basil leaves 2 teaspoons sugar 2 ounces white rum Seltzer or soda water Place three leaves of basil, one teaspoon of sugar, and a light squeeze of grapefruit juice from one of the slices in the bottom of a tall glass or Mason jar.

Muddle lightly; don’t attack or grind up the basil leaves (the gritty sugar and small amount of liquid will help). Add the remaining sugar and the already-squeezed grapefruit slice plus one or two more, and muddle again. Remember, the point is not to smash the fruit into submission, just to release the juice and the essential oils. Add the rum, stir, add enough ice that the glass is 3/4 full, and then top with seltzer and stir again. Taste and add more basil, sugar or grapefruit if you like. Sip with a straw to catch any undissolved sugar at the bottom of the glass.

If you wanted to write a movie script about an old school Americana/bluegrass band, born outside of its own time from the vestigial folk traditions of Virginia and northward into Canada, you’d be hard-pressed to dream up a more ideal (or unlikely) tale than the real life history of Old Crow Medicine Show. The foundations of the band were first laid back in the early 1990s, when, in the seventh grade, Critter Fuqua crossed paths with Ketch Secor (how ‘bout those for old time hero names?). The duo played a few tiny gigs and open mics together not too long after meeting, but the band (currently a six-piece, but given to shifts and additions) took a few years to coalesce around Fuqua and Secor.

Consider, if you will, the musical milieu of the '90s: Not exactly a hotbed of banjo, harmonica, fiddle and upright bass activity. Both Fuqua and Secor have often noted that they didn’t exactly grow up in the middle of a bunch of folk or bluegrass influences, instead cherishing acts like Guns N’ Roses and Nirvana, before eventually, separately and together, falling hard for the behemoth that is Bob Dylan’s catalog. Through the words and tunes of the American bard of record, the two discovered the

Mr. Pidge, Voodoo Boogaloo

The alias of Dominic Treviño, Mr. Pidge falls under the category of vaporwave, I think. Basically, ’90s pop music chopped and screwed – slowed down and drowned.

Think DJ Screw meets Amy Grant. Interestingly, Mr. Pidge uses sources as far-flung from Magic 105.3’s airwaves as Duke Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood,” which gives the old standard a smoky, bluesy vibe not present in the original versions. Voodoo Boogaloo slink down the same trash-strewn alleyway as fellow nighttime sonic savants Portishead, when they’re not rapping over strobe-light beats – the perfect soundtrack to laser tag on molly. Local Music Week Music & Media Mixer I know most of you probably have no idea what Local Music Week actually is – it’s a considerably vague description. Simply put, from June 12 to 18, in an effort to give SA numerous opportunities to get out and experience some of the best and worst in the city’s music scene, participating bars and venues will showcase bills stacked with local talent. The music and media mixer, specifically, will take place at Co Lab, a new co-working space at 723 N. Alamo St., and will provide a chance to network and socialize with representatives involved in the San Antonio music scene, including the media, music-oriented businesses and organizations. DJs Donnie Dee, Jester the Filipino Fist and Chacho will be spinning all night long. Think Lizzy Being in a cover band is no easy task, although it would seem simple enough: Play classic tunes from beloved bands and, by proxy, the people will eat it up. However, anyone that has ever seen more than, say, four tribute bands know that the scene is full of charlatans and wannabes whose passion for their idols just doesn’t translate to skill or talent. On the other hand, this margin for suckiness does still offer something in the way of entertainment. After all, the worst thing a band can be is boring. If you’re gonna butcher Thin Lizzy’s catalog of Irishinspired rovin’ rock numbers, butcher it nice and proper. Murder Junkies 25th Anniversary Even though GG’s dead, the third installment of Allin’s famed backing band have been tearing through classic Allin fare for a quarter of a century. Hard to believe that the most despicable, crass and crude punk band are even still alive and not incarcerated. Unfortunately, billed as the Fuck Off and Die Farewell Tour, it’s (probably) their last. Interestingly, original guitarist “Chicken” John Rinaldi, who only held the position for one year, ran for mayor of San Francisco in 2007, the second punk figure to do so after Dead Kennedy’s vocalist Jello Biafra unsuccessfully ran for the office in 1979. DIAPERS AND PEEPERS SAVAGE LOVE

> I’ve been dating a nice guy for a month or so.

Sex is good, and we’re faulty compatible in other ways, too. He told me he likes to wear diapers.

He said he doesn’t want me to do it with him, but that every once in a while he likes to wear them because it makes him feel “safe.” He said that this odd behavior isn’t sexual for him, but I have trouble believing him. I’m not sure how I feel about this. He also said that it embarrasses him and he wishes it wasn’t something he needed. If you have any insight into what to ask him or how to make sure I can keep him satisfied sexually as we move forward (if we do), it would be appreciated.

Do I Ask Pooper Everything Respectfully, Sir? You shouldn’t assume (contra your sign-off) that Potential New Boyfriend (PNB) is pooping his diapers.

Most guys who are ABDL (adult baby/diaper lover) are interested only in wetting themselves, if that. (Some only wear, never fill.) It sounds like PNB is struggling with kinkand/or sex-shame, DIAPERS, and the assumption you’ve made about the extent of his diaper play might put him on the defensive. Even if your assumption is accurate, it could still put him on the defensive.

Moving on…

You have a hard time believing PNB when he says there’s nothing sexual about his interest in diapers, and that makes two of us. Seeing as he’s already succumbed to shame where his kink is concerned — or it might be more accurate to say he hasn’t dug himself out from under the shame almost all kinksters struggle with initially — he is very likely weighed down by the sex-negativity that comes bundled with kink-shame. So he may have told you there’s nothing sexual about his thing for diapers because he thinks it makes his diapers seem less sordid.

That said, DIAPERS, “this makes me feel safe” and “this makes my dick hard” aren’t mutually exclusive phenomena. Both can be true. (And if diapers really do make adults feel safe — and I wanna see data on that — we could rebrand them as “portable individual safe spaces” and make them available at our better universities.)

Another clue there’s something sexual about this thing for diapers: not wanting you around while he wears them.

Maybe diapers are something he enjoys wearing during alone time, or maybe the sight of him in diapers makes the sexual aspect hard to deny. (“Is that an enormous rattle in your diaper or are you just happy to see me?”)

I would advise you to say some vaguely affirming things (“Your diaper thing doesn’t bother me, and wouldn’t even if it were sexual”) without pressuring him to include you at diaper time. Don’t rush things — relationship-wise or diaper-wise — and focus on establishing a mutually satisfying sexual rapport/repertoire.

P.S. I think you meant “fairly compatible” not “faulty compatible.” Normally I would correct a mistake like this before printing a letter — but I rather liked your accidental phrase. A loving and functional-but-imperfect relationship — really the best we can hope for — could be described as faulty compatible.

I’m an incredibly confused man in my early 20s.

I’m attracted to men and women. I could see spending my life with either. But I think sexual activity with either sex would be confusing and strange. In sex ed, I always thought the whole idea of sexual intercourse was strange. I don’t think I’m asexual, but I’m not sure if I am bisexual. I am more attracted to vibrant personalities. I don’t think that I am just straight or just gay, because I have equal feelings for both sexes. Does this mean I could find equal companionship with both? But if you don’t want the guys to pull up their pants and flee at the sight of you, PARK, pull together an outfit that gives you a dude-ish silhouette.

SPEAKING OF ABDL: Residents of Mount Prospect, Illinois, are upset about a new shop that caters to diaper lovers in their community. Tykables sells grown-up-size diapers, rocking chairs, and cribs. The Chicago Tribune reports that some residents are uncomfortable because the shop — which has no signage and soon-to-be-frosted windows — is near schools, parks, and other places where “children gather.” Mount Prospect is a suburb, so there are schools or parks near just about everything.
