I’M AFRAID FOR MY FAMILY’’ Witness testifies that Zetas murdered, dismembered children to sow fear

op Zetas cartel enforcers kidnapped the former drug trafficker in February 2013, blaming him for the loss of a drug load seized by U.S. law enforcement and demanding money for his release.

Testifying in a San Antonio federal courtroom last week, the man said sicarios, or cartel assassins, held him for 13 days, driving him in and around the Mexican city of Piedras Negras, a lucrative drug smuggling corridor that borders Eagle Pass.

Occasionally, the man testified, his captors would guide him out of the vehicle, force him to kneel on the ground and remove his blindfold so he could see what would happen to him and his family if he didn’t pay.

Once when they removed the blindfold, there was a family standing in front of him – a mother, father and their 6-year-old daughter – and a metal barrel with fire nearby. He testified that while other sicarios grabbed the parents by their hair, forcing them to watch, Marciano Millan Vasquez, nicknamed “Chano,” used an ax to dismember the girl while she was alive. “Chano,” he said, laughed as he began to toss her remains into the fire before ordering the same be done to the girl's parents. (Prosecutors and the judge on the case have asked that the witness not be named out of fear of cartel retaliation against his family.)

The former trafficker was the first to testify that he personally witnessed hideous acts of violence at the

hands of Millan Vasquez, who prosecutors claim was a Zetas hitman before assuming control of the gang’s forces in Piedras Negras. Arrested in a home on San Antonio’s west side last year, Millan Vasquez is on trial for multiple charges that could put him in prison for life, including allegations that tie him to a wave of killing, abductions and disappearances that paralyzed the Mexican border state of Coahuila in recent years.

In court, other witnesses have testified to how the Zetas effectively bought control of Coahuila. A former top financial advisor to the cartel who has since fled to the United States took the stand earlier this month to explain how bribes to municipal and state officials allowed cartel members to buy their way out of criminal charges and even seize control of the local prison, transforming it into an epicenter for the Zetas’ operations out of Piedras Negras. The former cartel advisor claimed the corruption reached the top levels of state government, testifying that he twice delivered bribe money to the personal aid of former Coahuila governor Humberto Moreira. (The feds are currently investigating whether Moriera and his former aid laundered millions in bribe money in the San Antonio area.)

In addition to bribery, last week’s court testimony highlighted another tool the Zetas used to seize control of Coahuila: horrific violence. The former drug smuggler who took the stand last Wednesday testified that he

was forced to start drug-running for the Zetas, claiming cartel hitmen rounded him up with six other men and told them to make a choice – work for the Zetas or for someone else. He testified that after one man was shot dead for refusing the offer, everyone else accepted.

When he was again abducted in 2013, the former trafficker testified that he personally witnessed more than a dozen people dismembered at the hands of Millan Vasquez or on his orders, their remains tossed in barrel fires to destroy the evidence. Included were four boys who hawked newspapers on the streets of Piedras Negras who the Zetas accused of being spies for another cartel. The former trafficker says the Zetas finally released him after a relative sold her house for $20,000 and turned it over to the cartel. He eventually fled to the United States when the Zetas still wanted more.

Not long after the man took the stand inside the courtroom, prosecutors asked him to identify Millan Vasquez. He stood and scanned the courtroom for several minutes, awkwardly and nervously staring at lawyers, observers, jurors and even U.S. Marshals in the courtroom before finally lifting his hand and pointing toward “Chano.”

When prosecutors later asked why he took so long to identify the defendant, the witness fought back tears, saying, “I’m afraid for my family.”

Plan to fix CPS highlights how broken the agency has been for years MARK REAGAN | @210REAGAN

> When Governor Greg Abbott appointed Hank Whitman as commissioner of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services in April, he said the status quo at Child Protective Services was unacceptable.

In a two-page letter to Abbott last week, Whitman released a 10-point plan that he says is a roadmap to fixing CPS. While Whitman’s plan appears to be a step in the right direction, it also hints at just how dysfunctional the agency has been over the years.

As attorney general and now governor, Abbott has vigorously defended the state against a classaction lawsuit that called Texas’ foster care system unconstitutional and sought to reduce physical,

sexual and psychological abuse of thousands of the most vulnerable kids caught in state care.

Among the plaintiffs was a girl, M.D., who made frequent allegations of sexual abuse at a group home that CPS never followed up on; by the time she was ready to age out of the system, according to records, the girl was living on the streets and working as a prostitute.

Last December, a federal judge in that case ruled that Texas’ foster care system violates the constitutional rights of the kids it is supposed to protect. Earlier this month a federal appeals court shot down a last-ditch effort from the state to overturn court-mandated reforms to the state’s foster care system.

Coupled with official state resistance to reforms ordered by the court, Whitman’s letter to Abbott last week underscores just how much still needs to be done to fix the system. Whitman wrote that none of CPS’ 146 special investigators, who have law enforcement backgrounds, have forensic training. Whitman plans to have them all trained

by September 1. “They will then be given the specific assignment to train all CPS investigative caseworkers in their regions,” according to the letter.

“The agency’s performance will improve — and Texas children will be safer — once we ensure the right people are in these key jobs and they are held accountable for the performance within their regions," Whitman wrote.

Kate Murphy, senior child welfare policy associate with Texans Care for Children, says she appreciates Whitman’s focus on strengthening CPS, describing his plan as important first steps to improving support for high-need kids in foster care and expanding prevention programs. However, she questioned whether lawmakers will provide CPS with the resources needed to address problems Whitman identified.

“The letter calls for ensuring that CPS caseworkers have the support they need to keep children safe,” Murphy told the Current. “For caseworkers to succeed, the Legislature will have to step up and provide the funding necessary to reduce caseloads.”

While it’s not clear how much funding the legislature will free up next year to address Whitman’s 10-point plan, in his letter he insists that he wants to end a culture of no accountability at CPS. “The era of business as usual at this agency has ended,” Whitman wrote. “Those who do not share our vision for children first no longer have a place here.”

> A video surfaced on social media last week that shows a white couple hurling racial slurs at a black family inside Chester’s Hamburger Co. in Universal City. As the confrontation reaches a boil, the white woman is heard on video telling the family, “My ancestors owned your ass, bitch… Black people don’t belong in America.

The video, which was posted via Facebook live, starts with Emarald Robinson explaining to her mother that a couple inside the restaurant had directed racist comments her way. Once the family goes to the table to confront the pair, things quickly go even further south.

Robinson tells viewers, “So, Facebook, this is what racist people look like.”

The couple can be heard saying “Hi, Facebook!” and adding “shut the fuck up” and calling the family the n-word.

Though managers called the cops, it doesn’t appear from the video that either bystanders or employees tried to keep the families apart. Sources say the

squabble was essentially over by the time police officers arrived on the scene.

Viewers of the video suggested a boycott of the restaurant for their lack of response during the incident.

Later, a Chester’s employee was seen on Facebook noting both families were asked to leave and adding “Boycott Chesters?? Haha. Go for it. According to social media you never see many black folk in there anyway, right?” The comment was followed by another where the employee teased, “Best Eva! Lol. And since you’re not black, you’ll be treated with the utmost respect.”

A group of protesters tried to arrange a peaceful sit-in on last Monday evening, but were met with tow trucks and police officers, and the group of about eight dispersed.

Our taste for everything pineapple began in 2012 with Tiki Tuesdays at The Brooklynite, but with several personnel changes since then, the trend has spread, first with the opening of Concrete Jungle off South Presa and later with tiki nights at Park Social, Mezcalería Mixtli and even Faust Tavern, which recently hosted its first Shrunken Head Sunday and will do so every first Sunday of the month. And not to be outdone, Esquire Tavern and Hotel Emma’s Sternewirth have rum-filled menus this season.

It could be our love of laid-back temperate climes that have helped spur this boozy trend. Perhaps it’s our love of nostalgia and themed parties. For Hillary Woodhouse, one

Place a rice press in the center of the sheet, and press rice tightly inside. Top with a slice of luncheon meat, and remove press. Wrap nori around rice mold, sealing edges with a small amount of water. (Rice may also be formed by hand in the shape of the meat slices, 1 inch thick.) Musubi may be served warm or chilled.

‘Vacancy’

◀ In the process of developing an aesthetic that’s easily recognizable as her very own, artist Sara Frantz has accomplished other difficult feats — giving landscape painting a fascinating remix, evoking collage without cutting or pasting, and making architectural relics appear lonely — even alienated — despite prismatic interventions. A Chicago native who taught at the University of Texas at Austin and UTSA from 2007 to 2014 and currently teaches at California Polytechnic State University, Frantz fuses three classic concepts (travel, landscape and nature — both real and imagined) in works that place multicolored structures (rendered in gouache) in bleak-looking blackand-white environments (rendered in graphite). Exhibition-ready following a fire in May and closure for repairs, Sala Diaz plays host to Frantz’s tellingly titled “Vacancy.” Nodding to the absence of people — and sometimes life in general — in her work, the solo show sees Frantz acting as “the architect of a fake utopian commune of trailer homes” custom-crafted for such characters as “a willing victim of wanderlust, a doctor of philosophy, an aeronautical engineer and an entrepreneur/ mother.” Free, 6-9pm, Sala Diaz, 517 Stieren St., (972) 900-0047, saladiazart.org. — BR

◀ Among the stand-ups other stand-ups frequently mention as the greatest living, Dave Attell is an anomaly: not as introspective as Maria Bamford, as sociological as Chris Rock or as philosophical as Louis C.K., Attell is probably best described as a joke guy, and many of those jokes are of the ever-popular dick persuasion.

It’s no coincidence that Comedy Central’s Insomniac, Attell’s best-known work,

◀ That San Antonio photographer Charlie Kitchen’s photoconstructions are visually arresting, opening fresh and odd vistas onto familiar landscape imagery, is perhaps beside the point of his explorations — but it’s certainly a damn fine opening argument as to why you’ll want to attend his new solo exhibit.

For Kitchen, who graduated with a degree in photography from Texas State University in 2014 and currently works at Artpace, the importance of his work is in what he calls “pseudo-scientific analysis of the fundamental qualities of photography.” Part analog and part digital, Kitchen’s

process involves the use of large-format cameras, specialized film masks and 3D-printed templates that are inserted in the camera during exposure for a kind of in-camera collage. The resulting works, aside from being fascinating and beautiful, are multiple exposures that combine two forms of representation.

◀ Endless parodies, overplay of the ridiculously awesome but also kind of ridiculous Bee Gees songs, and John Travolta’s subsequent sporadically embarrassing John Travolta-ness notwithstanding, 1977’s Saturday Night Fever is definitive filmed proof that disco did not in fact suck. But if you go seeking ironic laughs be warned: Fever’s also a fairly heavy example of gritty 1970s cinema, full of moody method acting and still-shocking antiheroics. Travolta’s Tony Manero does more brooding than boogalooing. ▶ When RuPaul’s Drag Race (RPDR) premiered on the Logo network in 2009, no one could have predicted the type of cultural phenomenon it would become, thrusting gay culture into the mainstream, breathing new life into the world of drag and bringing the show’s namesake out of 1990s-era oblivion. Only two years later, local nightclub promoter Rey Lopez would capitalize on the show’s success before its creators began their own national tours promoting the RPDR performers. What began as a single club performance by RPDR season three alum Manila Luzon (pictured) has developed into shows throughout the year, Out in the Park (a drag-stravaganza set to take over Six Flags Fiesta Texas on September 23) and the Rey Lopez Birthday Bash, an over-thetop celebration uniting a dozen RPDR contestants at the Aztec on Friday. ON A RECENT SATURDAY MORNING, I had the opportunity to speak one-on-one with legendary trans Latina activist Bamby Salcedo after she led a workshop on community organizing at the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center. Salcedo was in town for a screening of the documentary Transvisible: The Bamby Salcedo Story, a film about her life and activism.

In our meeting, Salcedo spoke about what the film means to her, while also giving me pointers on how to be more effective as a transgender rights activist and member of the community. In reflection, it’s surreal to have met a trailblazer who has helped to pave the way for trans women like me to speak out and demand change, let alone to have an hour-long conversation with her, ending with a beautiful selfie session in front of the transgender pride flag that hung above us in the upstairs space of the Esperanza Center. It’s something I’ll never forget.

One of the big problems that seems to affect the San Antonio activism scene is the resistant political environment, particularly when it comes to trans and queer issues. What have you done to help change the hearts of people who haven’t always been on board with your message? • What I do is bring awareness to specific issues — but bring awareness in different ways. I’ve done public speaking, which is obviously important, but I’ve also organized and participated in direct action … It’s about addressing issues and what’s happening in the community in a way that brings the results and the change that we want.

How do you see things changing right now? • I can tell you that the trans community specifically is not in the same place we were 30 years ago or even 10 years ago.

“Trans” is a hot topic right now, but I think it’s important for everyone to understand that, even though there is greater visibility, the violence against the trans community has increased … One of the things that I showed [during the workshop] was a video clip of an action we did at the National LGBTQ Task Force Conference in Denver last year. We read a statement [about] how the LGB has

been exclusive of trans people and how we need to invest in improving the livelihood of trans people. Because, even though we are visible and there are certain people being uplifted and highlighted in the media, the social problems are still there, the marginalization and continued discrimination doesn’t just go away.

And the trans people who are most uplifted seem to be the ones who can pass and blend into society more easily than others. We are more acceptable when we appeal to societal views of gender and presentation. • And that’s not the reality of many of us, right? Not all of us have had those opportunities. Trans people transition every day, but only certain experiences are focused on and those experiences don’t reflect what the common trans person experiences.

I think those of us who have had more opportunities and support need to recognize that it is not the norm, and we need to speak out for those who don’t have those same options. • Like I said, it has to come back to addressing the social issues that most trans women face directly. Just because we are visible and are receiving media attention doesn’t mean that the struggle from 30 years ago isn’t still there. So we need to organize to say that enough is enough and there needs to be attention to this issue. And I often have to do that with direct action: through sit-ins and shutting things down and calling out politicians.

Can you speak about the film Transvisbile and what it means to you? • I’m hoping that people will be able to see Transvisible and possibly relate to what I’ve been through. I hope that it inspires people to take a stand and to realize that — despite the different challenges [and] issues that we may encounter in our lives — we can still be great and make a difference in our communities.

Is there a way that we can access Transvisbile aside from a private screening? • Unfortunately, we have not found a way to distribute the film. But we’ve

shown [it] in different circuits, festivals, and private screenings, and there’s a way to order a copy directly from our website (transvisiblefilm.com), with a donation to the TransLatin@ Coalition.

Can you talk more about the organizations that you’re working with right now? • The main organization that I work with right now is the TransLatin@ Coalition. We have representation in 11 different states and we have seven organized chapters … But I organize with many different groups that have different areas of focus and different approaches.

Can you talk about some of the different approaches these orgs have? • Well, some of the groups focus on the prison industrial complex — some who are for reform, and some who are for liberation — but I believe we have to approach that movement particularly from different ways. We have to work within the system to change the structures but also to find alternatives to incarceration.

And that goes back to identifying the root of the issue? • Definitely. It’s a system and how the system is set up. We know it’s not going to go away because it’s a billion dollar industry at this point. But we need to think about how we can work around the system to subvert it and to empower those who are targeted by it. And that’s just one of many issues I’m concerned with, but of course they all overlap in some way.

With all the emotional work and bullshit that trans activists deal with, do you ever take the time for self-care? • Oh yeah, I have to understand that it’s only me and I don’t have the solution to all the problems. So sometimes, I just have to say no and take a step back. I have responsibilities within the organization I’m running and within the community, but it can get crazy. Like I said, there are people who are with you and there are people who are against you; and sadly, there are people who will want to destroy you. Local artist ANGELA FOX dares us to Enter the Snake Clan.

Clad in black leggings, hoods and pointy heels, the tough-looking ladies that often inhabit the work of local artist Angela Fox embody the sort of characters your parents likely warned you about. They tussle, guzzle cans of beer, loiter in parking lots and look like they might be plotting something. Armed with a keen sense of color, a background in printmaking and a fondness for comic books, Fox adds rich layers and patterns to her works (typically rendered in gouache), giving them an intricacy reminiscent of ethnic rugs and textiles.

Currently an adjunct faculty member at the University of the Incarnate Word and San Antonio College, Fox first caught our eye as a featured artist in the 2009 Texas Biennial and has since exhibited at Blue Star Contemporary (“Spatial Planes”), Chicago’s Maxwell Colette Gallery (“Yes, Medusa!”) and San Francisco’s Fecal Face (“4%ers”). Beyond undercurrents of tension and danger in her work, there’s also a strong sense of community within Fox’s subjects — units she refers to as “tightly knit gangs.”

While reading Manly Palmer Hall’s mystical, 1920s-era magnum opus The Secret Teachings of All Ages and watching “a ton of kung fu movies,” Fox concocted a narrative that led her to Enter the Snake Clan, a meticulously rendered zine surrounding mystery cults and initiation rites. Taking cues from films in which “the actor’s fighting style is named after and mimics the style of a creature,” Fox chose a slithering snake as clan mascot and looked to Greek vases to find potential “tasks that an initiate takes on in order to become a hero or member of the clan.”

Reprinted here as an excerpt selected by the artist, the cryptic project sees Fox moving away from her medium of choice in favor of stark black-and-white drawings rendered in ink.

GENRE BUSTER Ghostbusters reboot is nothing like your average reprocessed big screen do-over

My reaction to the idea of an allfemale Ghostbusters reboot? I am desperate for movies about women doing all sorts of things -- including silly stuff like engaging in experimental particle physics, playing around with total protonic reversal, and saving New York City -- but I would also like women to get their own stories and the opportunity to create their own iconic characters. I knew that even if this remake turned out to be completely amazing, any success would come with an asterisk. There would always been the “real” Ghostbusters -- the original 80s movie, not to be confused with the spinoff animated series The Real Ghostbusters, though there’s that too -- and the “girl” Ghostbusters. Women deserve better than to be constantly tagged as the lesser, the other, the not-quite-as-good.

I still believe all that. But I am getting to have my feminist cake and eat it too, because holy moly, Saturday Night Live badass Kate McKinnon has gone and created an instantly iconic new character in gleefully reckless physicist and tinkerer Jillian Holtzmann, simultaneously a snappy dresser, a devil-may-care snarkster, a

master of the mysteries of the universe, and a creator of cool crap that goes boom.

Holtzmann is clearly the analogue here for Harold Ramis’ Egon Spengler from the 1984 movie -- and physically she evokes the blond-pompadoured Egon of Real Ghostbusters -- but she is nothing like him.

She is unlike any female character The Movies have ever seen. She is powerful in a way that has nothing to do with her appeal to men, all too frequently the only power women onscreen are allowed to deploy. She is brainy comic mayhem that is a touch of Back to the Future’s Doc Brown and a whole lotta the Doctor (of Doctor Who, that is). She is the authority of science combined with the freedom of no-fucks-given, and she is not the sort of woman we typically see women granted the cultural permission to be.

This new Ghostbusters would be worth hailing for Holtzmann alone... but happily, there is much more to cheer. The snappy script, by director Paul Feig and Katie Dippold, zings from the movie’s opening moments with cunning, snappy verve, often out of left field: pay close attention to the commentary offered, in the opening

scene, by the tour guide of an historic NYC mansion that soon turns up haunted.

The plot follows a similar track to that of the 1984 movie, with Columbia University physics professor Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) and the more paranormally inclined academic Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) teaming up, along with Holtzmann, to hunt down the ghosts suddenly showing up all over town. But both actors have toned down their sometimes overamped comic personas here, making it less easy to determine which characters from the original films Gilbert and Yates are shadows of: they’re neither and both Dan Aykroyd’s Ray Stanz and Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman at the same time. As with the authentically fresh Holtzmann, they aren’t attempting to imitate anyone, which does actually distinguish this movie from the spate of far more reprocessed reboots, remakes, and do-overs we’ve been subjected to of late.

Unlike with the 1984 movie -- in which ghosts started appearing at precisely, by pure coincidence, the same moment when a new business came into existence to deal with them -- there is actually a reason baked into the story about why ghosts are

now popping up, which is what prompts the formation of Gilbert’s and Yates’s project, which is not an entrepreneurial effort but a scientific research endeavor to capture and study them. And baked into that reason is the feminism of this new Ghostbusters. (Sorry, boys who are afraid of girls: this is an unabashedly feminist movie. But it’s still superfun, promise!)

There are a few not-really-throwaway lines of dialogue about nasty comments the HHHH women receive online, as in response to videos of ghosts they post on YouTube; these comments are nearly identical to some of those the mere idea of this movie itself has generated. But far more incisive is the villain of the piece, a literally basementdwelling creep (Neil Casey) who justifies the very bad things he is doing as his way of striking back at bullies. Contrast this with Gilbert’s and Yates’s tales of being denigrated for their deliciously dorky oddness. Guy treated badly wants to end the world; gals treated badly turn their pain into something positive, and find themselves in a position to save the world. sacurrent.com • July 20—26, 2016 • CURRENT 33

San Antonio Film Festival continues to flourish after 22 years Things have been going pretty well for the San Antonio Film Festival over the past two decades – increased submissions, more international representation, strong local partnerships – but festival director and founder Adam Rocha isn’t about to stand pat.

Instead, the festival, which runs July 25-31 at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and the historic Pearl Stables, will feature a handful of new components for its 22nd edition.

“It’s time to expand and give this city some more panache and sizzle,” Rocha told the Current during an interview last week.

“The festival is getting bigger and we want to try out some different things.”

Along with screenings of films from around the world and a series of panel discussions, the festival will include a four-day mini film festival for children featuring a collection of animated shorts.

The children’s film festival portion of SAFF takes place July 27-30.

“Filmmakers have kids, so they’re always asking, ‘What screenings can I take my kids to?’" Rocha said. “We’re giving people what they want.”

Also new on the agenda: a screenwriting contest that Rocha hopes will unearth the next Lawrence Kasdan.

“We’ve wanted this to be a part of the festival for a while,” Rocha said. “As we saw the festival expand, a screenwriting

contest made sense. I really think it’s going to catch on.”

According to Rocha, close to 1,000 films were submitted to the festival. Countries representing accepted films this year include France, Spain, Croatia and Norway, just to name a few.

“We’ve become a legitimate player on the world-cinema stage,” Rocha said. “We’re a launching pad for not only San Antonio filmmakers, but international filmmakers, too.”

When it comes to San Antonio filmmakers, Rocha said a record 29 were chosen to screen their movies. One of them, The Places You’ll Go, is a short documentary by local filmmaker Jesse Salazar III. In the film, Salazar points his camera at his own son during a road trip across the U.S. and explores his unique perspective on life during their journey.

“Sometimes it’s difficult to slow down and remember what it’s like to have an innocent and sincere outlook on life and appreciate the newness of the world around us, so I wanted to capture that,” Salazar said. “The fact that my film was acknowledged by my hometown means a lot to me.”

Another San Antonio native getting recognition at the festival for her work in the industry is Marcia Nasatir, who will receive SAFF’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Nasatir, 90, is the subject of the documentary A Classy Broad, which will screen during the festival. In 1974, she became the first woman to serve as vice president of production at a Hollywood studio. During her time in Los Angeles, she helped develop a number of major projects, including Rocky, Carrie and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

“She is so legitimately San Antonio, it’s insane,” Rocha said.

“She is so down-to-earth. Even with all this success in her life, she is authentic. I mean, who do you know that has hung out with Jack Nicholson? She’s a living legend.”

Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville has finally opened its San Antonio location inside Rivercenter Mall.

Yes, we have plenty of margs in SA already, but the first Margaritaville in Texas will offer a family-friendly restaurant with seating for 315 souls.

Per today’s press release announcement via the International Meal Company, which owns the restaurant, the space will feature “island-inspired flavors, live entertainment and a patio overlooking the river” all inside a 10,000 square-foot venue. Menu items sound as goofy as you’d imagine: Cheeseburger in Paradise, Volcano Nachos, Drunken Shrimp Skillets.

A grand opening was held Tuesday, July 19. The restaurant will open 11 a.m. daily.

There’s a new sushi joint in town, sashimi lovers.

Wild Goji Restaurant and Bar opened inside the former home of Speisen European Cuisine. Named after goji berries, a super fruit, the restaurant carries a pretty extensive menu that includes a collection of starters and sushi rolls, ramen, katsudon and yakitori.

Chef/co-owner Nick Zheng has also added a New York sushi pizza on the menu with tortilla base, spicy tuna, salmon, seaweed salad and avocado and probably the most thorough list of Japanese-style skewers from chicken to steak to pork belly to chicken wings.

Ice cream and booze combine at Dorcol Distilling Company’s second annual ice cream competition on Saturday, July 23 from 8 to 11 p.m. Helado Borracho 2.0 challenges area restaurants to create San Antonio’s favorite boozy ice cream using the distillery’s award-winning Kinsman Rakia.

Participating restaurants this year include Lüke San Antonio, Liberty Bar, Hoppy Monk, Folc, SA Pops, Paleteria San Antonio, Il Forno, reigning champ South Alamode Panini & Gelato Company and Saucy Sweets.

things we can all learn about summer drinking from Southerleigh’s newest beers

On Wednesday, July 13, Southerleigh Fine Food and Brewery hosted their monthly “Summer Beer Talk Series,” in which brewmaster Les Locke presents the brewpub’s newest offerings. As a treat, the July tasting also featured an appearance by Travis E. Poling, co-author of San Antonio Beer: Alamo City History by the Pint and historian of the San Antonio beer scene.

For $20, patrons were given a custom Southerleigh glass, unlimited refills of the three beers, an explanation of each drink and a plate of Texas-style guajillo-roasted whole pig with sausage, Southerleigh’s magnificent jalapeño cornbread, and red beans and rice The three beers, the Don’t Dress Me Mexican lager, Cucumber Gose (goes-ah) and Prince Oberyn’s Head, are all brewed for summer drinking, though they’re far from similar. In addition to refreshing your heat-wilted palate, each beer offers its own lesson in summer drinking

Beer: Cucumber Gose Taste: Gose, a beer traditionally from Leipzig, Germany, is sour, salty and dry.

Unappealing as those adjectives may sound, the gose was the standout beer of the bunch. Combined with pureed cucumber, Sorachi hops and a hint of tamarind, the gose combined traditional components of a Continental gose with the puro flair of a raspa.

What You Can Learn: If acidity makes summer heat bearable, sourness makes it a delight. Think of summer heat as an ingredient — a strong, overbearing one.

To balance against it, you need an equally strong flavor, and while acidity does an admirable job equalizing the scales, the salinity and lip-puckering funk of a gose are the perfect fit for South Texas. Throw in some San Antonio flair, like Tajin or limón, and you have the perfect summer beer.

Beer: Prince Oberyn’s Head Beer: Don’t Dress Me Mexican Lager Taste: As a session beer, the Mexico-by-way-of-Viennese beer is designed to have a lower alcohol content, while still offering a crisp, bracing acidity. The idea is that you’ll want to have several to stave off the heat, but their low ABV allows you to do so functionally. The end result is softly amber, hued with notes of lightly flaxen wheat, similar to a fuller-bodied Victoria cerveza.

What You Can Learn: With beer, flavor and body often go hand-in-hand. During the summer though, you want a beer you can drink all afternoon without gorging yourself or getting hammered. Look for lagers whose origins are equatorial — Mexico, Italy, Thailand — as crispness in their beers is a prerequisite, meaning a higher likelihood of finding a refreshing, yet flavorful draught.

Taste: Spoiler alert — this beer tastes nothing like Prince Oberyn’s smashed head.

Made with Simcoe hops, the West Coast IPA is a single malt, single hop beer that packs an astringent, floral taste.

What You Can Learn: Designed to withstand the journey from England to India, it’s no surprise that IPAs fair well in hot climes. All the same, when combined with the grueling summer heat, a robust IPA can wear a drinker down. As a result, hoppy, green-oak beers are best left to summer evenings, when the sun has softened. When that time comes, look for a drink like the “Simcoe Smash,” a lesson in bitterness balanced by tang, in this case passion fruit.

Young local sound artist chosen to attend Grammy Camp

Tristan Mendoza was in the 7th grade the first time he heard a Daft Punk album. It was then when he realized what he wanted to pursue music as a career.

“I started doing my own songs here and there,” said Mendoza, 18, who recently graduated from the San Antonio School for Inquiry and Creativity, a charter arts school on the city’s north central side. “I wanted to be a DJ, but really didn’t know how to do that.”

It was during his junior and senior years studying sound production at SASIC that Mendoza began to hone his craft and meet professionals in the industry. His talent has led him to a second consecutive invite to Grammy Camp at the end of the month. The camp is a nine-day residential program for selected high school students interested

in a career in music. Mendoza was the only student chosen from Texas this year to attend the camp in Brooklyn.

During his time at SASIC, Mendoza took a number of audio classes, including advanced production, where he was able to see how much effort goes into creating sound for major films like Transformers and Godzilla.

“We would take a movie scene and strip all the audio and do all the sound effects ourselves,” Mendoza explained.

“I really learned a lot about the fundamentals of sound design.”

Mendoza also got the opportunity to work with local bands and attend gigs at Sam’s Burger Joint with his SASIC audio production teacher Art Guillermo Jr., who is active in the San Antonio music scene.

“Tristan is very passionate

about what he wants to do and he goes above and beyond,” Guillermo said. “It’s easy to talk about live sound, but it’s not until you’re sitting there and everything is clicking that you realize how fast-paced it really is.

Now he has that experience.”

It’s that real-world experience behind the scenes in the music industry that Mendoza hopes will lead him to his own major projects. Next year, his plans are to start college at Northwest Vista to study sound engineering and music. One day, he said he would love to work with music producer and DJ Porter Robinson.

“I’ve had certain songs change my life before,” Mendoza said.

“At the end of the day, I want to make something that could make at least one person feel something special.”

But Kurosawa wasn’t too haughty to create lighter fare. At age 86, he departed from his epic dramas to create a 30-second commercial for a yogurt drink. Did that compromise his artistic integrity? I say no.

Even a genius can’t be expected to create non-stop masterpieces. Be inspired by Kurosawa, Gemini. In the coming weeks, give your best to even the most modest projects.
