Reflecting on the end of the Tim Duncan era

> After leading the San Antonio Spurs to the playoffs for 19 straight seasons, Tim Duncan officially called it a career on Monday. News of his retirement arrived in typical Duncan fashion, via a press release from the Spurs, with no press conference and zero fanfare. On the court, Duncan’s farewell came in Oklahoma City, after all, walking off the hardwood with his hand extended towards the sky.

It’s difficult to imagine now, but there was once a time when the Spurs were not regarded as winners. Although players like George Gervin and David Robinson kept San Antonio relevant in the league, it’s remarkable to think the Spurs never reached the NBA Finals until Duncan’s arrival. Like Robinson before him, Duncan was an immediate gamechanger, with early play that was nothing less than explosive.

Duncan delivered the Spurs to the NBA’s promised land in just his sophomore season, singlehandedly transforming San Antonio into a city of champions almost overnight.

That first title in 1999 hinted not only at Duncan’s greatness but also at the new Spurs’ ascendance. San Antonio had finally arrived, and Spurs faithful stood a little taller, made more noise, and were joyfully unburdened of an inferiority complex that had haunted the city for years.

With Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker by his side, Duncan built a basketball dynasty in South Texas. Each championship further solidified his position as the greatest power forward of all time and, perhaps more importantly, the consummate teammate.

Although never a fan of interviews, Duncan was seldom

salty with reporters. He would instinctively dip his shoulders to accommodate the shortest of scribes and often playfully countdown his locker room exit on one hand to inform the media that their window was closing.

Much has been said of Coach Popovich’s Jacob Riis-inspired mantra, which reads: “When nothing seems to help, I go look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.”

Perhaps more than any Spur, Duncan was the living embodiment of Riis’ quote. His methodical game outlasted Kobe and Shaq’s Lakers, Steve Nash’s Suns, and LeBron’s Heat. As his body began to break down and he settled into his old-man game, Duncan continued to hammer away at his rock, capturing a fifth title for the Spurs.

Duncan makes his exit with a string of accolades that includes two MVP awards, three Finals MVP Awards, 15 All-Star Game appearances and perhaps most impressive, 15 All-NBA Team selections and 15 NBA AllDefensive Team honors. Perhaps the best big man since Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, he is arguably the top player of his generation.

Until his jersey is retired by the Spurs, Duncan will be celebrated primarily by his peers and the usual talking heads. It’s somewhat bittersweet to see the future Hall-of-Famer finally get his due. As others describe him as a champion, an icon, and an NBA legend, with all due respect to the late Muhammad Ali, in South Texas he will simply be known as The Greatest.

They made sure the place didn’t look like much from the outside, just another plain, unassuming house in the middle of quiet residential neighborhood somewhere in the Mexican border state of Coahuila.

Inside, however, the place was a decked-out safe haven for leaders of the powerful Zetas drug cartel.

Testifying in a San Antonio federal courtroom last week, a former top financial advisor to the Zetas remembered helping cartel bosses build what they called the “VIP.” There was the large room with a jacuzzi and a bar with every kind of liquor imaginable, and a part of the house where the cartel kept pit bulls and prisoners. Rodrigo Humberto Uribe Tapia, who claims he helped launder some $50 million in drug proceeds for the cartel before fleeing to the United States in 2009, says a top Zetas commander insisted the place be Scarface-themed. The commander asked that Uribe hang a blown-up image of a scene from the movie where Tony Montana buries his face in cocaine mountain. “He was kind of like an idol to him,” Uribe said on the stand.

Last week Uribe was the first to testify in what’s expected to be the lengthy trial of Marciano Millan Vasquez, who prosecutors claim was a Zetas hitman, or

sicario, before assuming control of the gang’s forces in Piedras Negras, a critical city for the cartel because of two international bridges into Eagle Pass that make the area a lucrative smuggling route into Texas.

Millan Vasquez, who was arrested in San Antonio last year, faces multiple charges that could put him in prison for life. Prosecutors are expected to bring evidence that Millan Vasquez was in part responsible for a wave of killings, abductions and disappearances that paralyzed Coahuila in recent years. One of the charges against Millan Vasquez allows the feds to prosecute him for killings in another country since they claim the violence was tied to a drug trafficking conspiracy that stretched deep into the United States.

In opening statements last week, assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Galdo hinted at some of the grisly testimony expected to come out at trial this week and next: “The defendant killed, the defendant tortured, the defendant dismembered.”

Millan Vasquez’s attorney, Jaime Cavazos, told jurors that his client is a simple farmer and insisted that any acts of violence described by paid government informants have nothing to do with him. “This whole trial

is about condemning an organization that the federal government cannot reach,” he said. In court, however, Uribe testified to hearing cartel leaders order Millan Vasquez to kill a high-ranking Zetas member who’d angered his cartel bosses. He also testified to seeing Millan Vasquez and other Zetas enforcers covered in blood after killing a phone company worker who’d been listening in on cartel communications.

Uribe’s testimony also underscored why a case like Millan Vasquez’s is being tried by federal prosecutors in San Antonio: corruption, bribery and violence have made it virtually impossible to bring such a case in Mexico. According to Uribe, who prosectors say was a frontman for the cartel between 2007 and 2009, when he fled the country to begin working with U.S. law enforcement officials as a confidential informant, the Zetas were able to smuggle drugs, launder money and kill with impunity in Coahuila because of bribes paid to not only local but top state officials.

In his testimony last week, Uribe said he was personally involved in helping deliver bribes to the personal aid of former Coahuila governor Humberto Moreira. On one occasion, Uribe testified that he and other cartel leaders met with the aid in a hotel, delivering some $2 million in cash packed into suitcases. Another time they met the aid at a gas station and passed off another $2 million in vacuum-sealed bags. Uribe testified that the bribes not only allowed cartel members to buy their way out of criminal charges, but also secured cartel bosses’ access to state vehicles and even helicopters to avoid detection from the Mexican military as they moved throughout the region. (Moreira’s attorney, who just so happens to be prosecuting Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, told the Express-News that Uribe’s testimony about bribing the governor’s office is “pure fantasy.”)

Uribe claimed drug money flowing to local and state officials allowed the cartel to set up checkpoints across the state, get around construction permits, and even assume control of a local coal mining company. He testified that the bribes also gave the Zetas near total control of the state prisons, where cartel members had access to whatever they wanted – “Everything,” he testified, “liquor, drugs, women, parties.” Uribe testified that cartel leaders even packaged drugs to load into secret compartments in smuggling vehicles on the Piedras Negras prison grounds.

The testimony alleging widespread corruption among Coahuila state officials comes as the feds investigate whether Moreira and his former aid laundered millions in bribe money in the San Antonio area. Last year the feds moved to seize a San Antonio house linked to the former governor that prosecutors claim was bought with laundered money.

Last week the country collectively groaned as two more graphic videos of black men killed during routine police encounters surfaced and spread across social media. In statements following the shootings of Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota, President Barack Obama said the country should be “deeply troubled,” calling the killings “symptomatic of the broader challenges within our criminal justice system, the racial disparities that appear across the system year after year, and the resulting lack of trust that exists between law enforcement and too many of the communities they serve.”

As the videos yet again dragged police use of force to the top of the national conversation, San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor reacted this way in a prepared statement her office sent out late Thursday night: “I found myself at a loss today when my 12-year-old daughter showed me YouTube videos of the recent police shootings and asked me, ‘Mommy why does this keep happening? ’ While we don’t know all the details of the incidents, I urged Morgan to think about how we can be part of the solution. Locally, our My Brother’s Keeper effort is promising, and the City Council and I are committed to working to strengthen police-community relations through various means. Our police department is in ongoing in-service training and having deep discussions regarding the use of non-deadly as well as deadly force. In the meantime, I ask all to pray for those who suffered losses and for the communities affected.”

It’s not entirely clear what Taylor means by said “deep discussions” about use of force within the San Antonio Police Department.

Amid the raging national discourse on police violence, the widely-respected Police Executive Research Forum earlier this year acknowledged that “American policing is at a critical juncture” and released a series of guidelines for how departments should approach police use of force in ways that embrace the “sanctity of human life” – recommendations that seems to have angered local police union leadership. When SAPD Chief William McManus signaled that he’d embraced at least some of those PERF guidlines, a stunning 97 percent of union members cast a no-confidence vote against their chief.

All of which followed a series of incidents in recent years that have called into question exactly how local cops use force against suspects. For instance, there’s the 2014 case in which three San Antonio cops beat a man they mistakenly thought was a suspect wanted on drugs and weapons charges; Kens5 later reported that the man, Roger Carlos, wound up paralyzed from the chest down due to complications from injuries sustained during the beating.

Another reminder came last year when the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals vacated the conviction of 44-year-old Carlos Flores, who was beaten by SAPD officer Matthew Belver while on the ground with his hands cuffed behind his back during an arrest for suspected drunk driving. According to the National Registry of Exonerations, Flores had been convicted of assaulting a public servant because he kicked Belver in the face during the beating; police, according to the registry, never disclosed to prosecutors that the department actually suspended Belver for 30 days without pay for filing a false report and for failing to get Flores medical treatment after the beating. Recentlyreleased dash-cam video shows Belver last year berated and threatened to fight yet another suspect who was only arrested in the first place because he was “disrespectful” to the officer at a crime scene.

Despite these “deep discussions” surrounding

police use of force within his department, McManus earlier this year shocked many when he rescinded disciplinary action he’d taken against an officer who fatally shot Antronie Scott, a man who was only armed with a cell phone during his police encounter.

McManus told reporters at the time that “additional training and not disciplinary measures was the most appropriate course of action.” Taylor expressed support for the chief’s decision, saying in a statement at the time, “While I still believe this tragic incident should have never occurred, I understand the Chief’s path on discipline here.” Just last month an ExpressNews analysis of SAPD data revealed that local cops were much more likely to use force when arresting people of color.

People across the country took to the streets last Thursday in protest of the week’s fatal police shootings. One otherwise peaceful protest in Dallas turned violent when a sniper ambushed police from above the crowd, killing at least five officers and wounding several others. According to McManus, authorities received reports of shots fired at the San Antonio Public Safety Headquarters over the weekend; the chief told reporters that police found bullet markings on the building and shell casings nearby.

What's clear is that such violence will only inflame tensions between communities critical of police use of force and officers who feel demonized by the current discussion surrounding police violence.

◀ For the summer 2016 installment of its International Artist-in-Residence cycle, Artpace turned curatorial duties over to Dominic Molon, the Richard Brown Baker Curator of Contemporary Art at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art. With a wideranging eye that’s informed the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago’s “Production Site: The Artist’s Studio Inside-Out” and the touring exhibition “Situation Comedy,” Molon selected Andy Coolquitt (Austin), Juan William Chávez (St. Louis) and Rachel Maclean (Glasgow), who have been living and working together at Artpace since May 16. A creative scavenger of the highest order, Coolquitt crafts impractical magic from salvage and debris (metal tubing, plastic bottles, straws, you name it) and famously turned an Austin farmhouse into a collaborative compound informed by artists, friends and strangers. Employing drawing, film, photography and architectural interventions, Peruvian-born Chávez is a self-described cultural activist who’s arguably best known as the creator of St. Louis’ Pruitt-Igoe Bee Sanctuary — an urban farm that cultivates community through beekeeping and agriculture on the site of a razed public housing development. As for Maclean, her artistic investigations into identity and politics play out in films, prints and photographs in which she transforms herself into peculiar characters superimposed onto digitized backgrounds. Champlin opened for angry clown prince Bill Hicks and was named “America’s Funniest Real Woman” by none other than the acid-tongued goddess Joan Rivers. In her two decades of stand-up, Gonzalez has entertained troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, et al, and appeared on Logo TV, Ellen and the Today Show. And Laredo native Valls, in addition to appearing on two Showtime specials and the comics-to-watch lists compiled by Curve and Diva magazines, received a Certificate of Recognition from the California Senate for promoting recovery in the LGBT community. ◀ Poppy, nostalgic and refreshingly optimistic, the Mexican synth-pop trio Belanova emerged as radio and MTV mainstays of the mid-2000s via romantically inclined dance hits (“Por Ti,” “Tus Ojos” and “Baila Mi Corazón,” to name a few) released on the Universal subsidiary Virus Records. Formed in Guadalajara by vocalist/songwriter Denisse Guerrero, programmer/ keyboardist Edgar Huerta and bassist/guitarist Ricardo Arreola, the band came into its own via the 2005 LP Dulce Beat (produced by Julieta Venegas collaborator Cachorro López) and got catapulted into the mainstream thanks to a Mitsubishi commercial endorsement, a track created for the Spanish-language version of High School Musical (“Eres Tú”) and a Mark Ronson-produced single for Coca-Cola’s 2012 Summer Olympics ad campaign (“Únete al Movimiento”). It’s impossible to imagine, for example, the Squidbillies patriarch belting out songs with titles like “Stalkin’ the Wild She Beast,”

“Alkyhol Withdrawal” and “Satan in a Thong.”

Actually scratch that: If you’ve seen Squidbillies, it’s probably impossible to listen to Hinson’s albums and imagine anything but a cephalopod in a trucker cap who’s surprisingly good at guitar. A Short History of Political Art Month (PAM)

Political Art Month does not have the sanction of the city, state, or any local nonprofit. It is not affiliated with a particular gallery, museum, or performance space. Rather, PAM is a conceptual designation by its founder, Gene Elder, writer, conceptual artist, librettist and archivist of the Happy Foundation, an LGBT archive housed in the Bonham Exchange building. It arose “blooming like Athena” from his brain, partly in reaction to Contemporary Art Month (CAM) being moved in 2010 from July, the month it occupied when it began in 1986 in what was a then-emerging Blue Star, to the more tourist-friendly and less infernally hot month of March.

Initially, Elder didn’t care much for the move, as it broke the annual cohesion, and seemed a CVB gambit favoring tourism over grassroots San Antonio art culture. Nonetheless, CAM's departure left a vacuum just waiting to be filled with: what else? Like the Declaration of Independence, July is inherently political and American. And like the Declaration of Independence, Gene Elder was born on the Fourth of July.

He wants to make clear that PAM belongs to everybody, can be co-opted, usurped, adapted, embraced, or rejected at will. He adds, “you don’t even have to go outside.”

If you get on his email list, you’ll have things to read for the rest of the summer. A prolific social commentator, he tends to send a group email once every three to four days. In these, you will find film reviews, links to articles about good health or UFOs (he’s a longtime listener of Coast to Coast AM) video clips, art criticism, and almost always an axiom that makes me laugh out loud.

He’s a rights-fighting LGBTQ OG as well, marching on Washington in 1987, one of the activists who volunteered for an arrest on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

He’s the grassroots journalist behind “A View of Reality from a Chartreuse Couch,” a column currently featured in Out In SA, and his letters to the editor, often about the River Road neighborhood in which he lives, make the San Antonio Express-News fairly regularly.

An irreverent devotion to San Antonio history is a theme throughout his work, including an eight-year performance project covered by The Wall Street Journal in an August 20, 1999 article entitled “Performance Artist Gene Elder Walks into Tourists’ Home Movies,” which is exactly what he did — in front of the Alamo.

Even before the internet, which empowers anybody to be a selfappointed anything (curator, media producer, “journalist,” etc.), Gene Elder took to as many media as his imagination could handle.

He once wrote a “revenge ballet” called Fairies Fiasco … but that’s a story for another time. For the purposes of this PAM scavenger hunt, a kind of ad hoc go-guide, he acts as curator, docent, and verbal archivist.

The PAM Survey: A Colloquial Study

In years past, Elder has, in fact, fomented some PAM activity, but this is the first two-person downtown survey of political art that anyone can get their eyes on. Here’s how we did it: Gene Elder and I drove around downtown, with Elder both driving and opining, with me taking notes. As we approached a particularly juicy piece of work, he’d stop the car and I would hop out, examine it, make notes, hop back in the car, and get Elder’s take. See how easy PAM is?

Several of these pieces, you doubtless will have seen. La Antorcha de la Amistad (The Torch of Friendship), at the very least. Some of these, you’re likely to have walked by a dozen times if you’re a denizen of downtown, with hardly a second glance.

When I pledged the Pledge of Allegiance to God and country there was nothing about following orders. So I don’t.

A note: These remarks are not meant as a historical or critical study; rather, they’re verbal drive-bys.

Political art may cause hindsight, nausea, projectile vomit, heart palpitations, sweaty palms, bowel irregularity, dry mouth, high blood pressure, blurred vision, violent laughter, and other uncontrollable irritations. But relax, it is only art.

Another note: Out of the seven pieces we chose, four depict men with guns.

Veterans Memorial Plaza 1oo Auditorium Circle

This plaza houses not one, but two bronze soldier groupings, one memorializing Vietnam, the other Korea, but in aggregate meant to honor all our fallen, anywhere. The figures are tensed, ready for battle, tough, memorialized. Oddly, they from some angles appear to be at war with each other. One cannot find issue with its mission, in this most military of American cities. Often, visitors to the site leave remembrances — cards, flowers, a patriotic ribbon tied around one of the guns’ barrels.

The plaza itself, however, seems both over- and under-designed, a series of separate gestures — the islands of men huddled together, one in an improvised-seeming pile of concrete. The figure rendering, while competent, is a little sketchy. They are like claymation in bronze.

Elder is not a fan, and points out that it was a railroaded, occult sort of project that covered up a perfectly good WWI memorial.

I opine that this outsized obelisk marks San Antonio as part of a larger, if distant South. Elder is skeptical.

But we were officially segregated, I protest. The Robert E. Lee Hotel is visible from here. There’s a high school named after him. Think of the accent, the biscuits, the risible and continuing issues of social justice. Whatever else San Antonio is, it’s Southern.

The legend on the obelisk reads, “Lest we forget our Confederate dead.”

Elder sniffs. “There can’t have been that many.”

You know what? I always thought this statue was of Juan Seguin. Elder is appalled at this. “It’s on Losoya Street!”

The image of it that springs to mind is of tourists standing with their heads next to the gun, eerily recalling Eddie Adams’ famous photograph General Nguyen Ngoc Loan executing a Viet

And it’s a good thing Mr. Losoya is standing on something: he’s tiny.

Smaller than humanscale. A bronze elf. Why so small? It seems significant.

He’s acknowledged by the plaque as unheralded, un-thanked. It was a gift from Coors. What did they mean by it, we wonder?

“Here, take this lilliputian Alamo Defender.

The Mexican one. He’s little, but he’s armed.”

He sports a Rambostyle headband and a look of defiance. He is, by far, the handsomest of the bronze heroes.

Moses Austin

Another ignored (by me) bronze guy I’d never bothered much about. As it turns out, it’s Moses Austin, the Connecticut-born colonial impresario who paved the way for, well, white people. The statue was erected in 1936, on the occasion of the Republic of Texas Centennial, with federal funds. Why him?

He extends a hand with a rolled-up document in the direction of the Spanish Governor's Palace.

His look is triumphant, as though 300 white families were to take their rightful place based on his God-granted fiat.

Interestingly, Moses Austin spent a scant year in Texas, before escaping to Missouri. According to the pediment, “Exposure and exhaustion during his Texas journey caused his death.”

What does that tell you? Elder and I feel it may be karmic.

It’s another salute to and a reminder of the devotional history of our city, the Mexican Catholicism that existed here long before Moses Austin thought to bring white people. Moses’ son, Stephen F. Austin, has been described as “the father of Texas.” Here is the mother of everything.

Fittingly, she marks the departure from military to a more humanistic history. To wit:

We close with another giant architectural abstract, this one representing the controversy and doubt surrounding public art in SA. While Elder idles at the curb, I’m confronted by the monolith in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center lobby. The surface is made up of hundreds of LED panels. I am initially unimpressed, finding it a looming, almost menacing presence, forboding some ill for civic life of our city. Also, it appears to be unplugged. But the fault lies in my perspective; nobody is walking past, so it hasn’t got much to respond to.

Steeped in controversy due to its $1 million price tag and installed in spitting distance from San Antonio artist Bill FitzGibbons’ similarly color-shifting, LED-powered Light Channels, London-based (gasp!)

Jason Bruges Studio’s towering “cheese grater” amusingly earned a “like” from FitzGibbons when we posted a photo of it on Instagram. We decided to consider this the very first public response to our curation.

The Secret Life of Pets is cute enough, but lacks originality

If the new animated film The Secret Life of Pets were a domesticated animal itself, it would be one of those adorable albeit annoyingly named hybrid dogs – a labradoodle or a cockapoo or, as Jeff Daniels describes in Dumb & Dumber, a bullshit (a cross between a bulldog and a shih-tzu). Each breed is facemeltingly cute and highly marketable, but essentially just another lovable, everyday mutt.

That’s not to say moviegoers won’t fall head over paws with the cast of furry, feathered, and even hairless characters in the sixth animated feature film from Illumination Entertainment, the studio which also boasts the popular Despicable Me franchise in its catalog.

While Illumination still hasn’t reached the storytelling heights of Pixar or Disney (what in the hell was Hop anyway?), the company’s cost-cutting animation techniques (they spend far less than their competition) are definitely not coughing up furballs either.

Despite the notable animation and top-notch voice work, Pets displays little originality in its script. In fact, Dog Story probably would’ve been a better title. The film tells the tale of Max (Louis C.K.), a Jack Russell terrier living in a Manhattan apartment with his owner Katie (Ellie Kemper).

Max’s perfect life is thrown out of whack when Katie brings home Duke (Eric Stonestreet), a shaggy and somewhat reckless Newfoundland dog to join their family. When Max and Duke are snatched by the pound, Max’s animal friends, led by Gidget (Jenny Slate), a squeaky, lovesick Pomeranian, set out to find the canine companions and bring them home before a psychotic, scene-stealing bunny named Snowball (Kevin Hart) and his wretched gang of abandoned pets turn them into puppy chow.

Duke joins the family

Ignore the countless and seemingly shameless similarities to the original Toy Story and Pets might be a little easier to take at face value. If you’ve ever wondered what your pet does when you leave home, the film’s screenwriters (Cinco Paul, Ken Daurio, and Kevin Lynch) devise some interesting ideas and adventures for these rogue pets to get into. And to be honest, aside from borrowing heavily from other movies, a lot of it is charming and harmless and funnier than your average poop jokes (although there are definitely poop jokes). Children won’t

mind the familiar narrative and will flock to it because of the likable animals, in which case Pets fall somewhere between the impressive Zootopia from Disney and the mind-numbing app-turned-movie Angry Birds from Sony.

The animation film industry continues to expand every year, so studios have to know they’re vying for the same audiences and that parents are going to have to start getting a lot choosier when it comes to entertainment for the kiddos.

Story matters. Luckily, Pets partakes in just enough wacky fun to make parents feel like they didn’t screw the pooch. sacurrent.com • July 13—19, 2016 • CURRENT 33

Yes, the San Antonio food scene is booming, but we’re still lacking on a few key items. Thankfully, several San Antonio residents are taking matters into their own hands and delivering hard-to-find foods straight to our bellies. Here’s a quick list of fare you should be eating at your local farmers market ASAP. Al Hijazyat, which rotates through The People’s Nite Market, Dignowity Hill Famers Market and The Trinity Market, is adding Saudi Arabian bites to the landscape. With influences from Egypt, Syria, Turkey, India, Indonesia and Central Asian, Al Hijazyat, owned

by Mashail Abdalaal, adds lamb dumplings and dolmas along with rice dishes, but expect to find the cuisine rolling throughout San Antonio as Abdalaal and her family save up for a food truck.

The city’s booming Puerto Rican population has made for an increase in said island’s fare, including Ay Papi’s food truck, which visits the The People’s Nite Market with a menu of crisp tostones, meaty tripleta sandwiches, and a seriously delicious Cuban sandwich.

A first for San Antonio in recent history (give or take the last 30 years), Berbere Ethiopian Cuisine is adding a new sort of spice to The People’s Nite Market and The Trinity Market. Named after a spice blend that

contains chili peppers, garlic, ginger, basil, korarima, rue, ajwain or radhuni, nigella and fenugreek, Berbere Ethiopian recently launched a food truck now based at 4741 Fredericksburg Road. The menu packs in veggies and proteins so you’ll find lentils, green beans, beets and stewed cabbage served alongside beef tibs, a dish of marinated beef. Dishes often include a spongy sourdough flatbread known as injera.

The Trinity Market is the weekend home to Bombay Salsa Co., a food truck that blends Indian and Mexican cuisines with solid results. Owned by St. Phillips instructor Hitish Nathani, the truck serves up butter chicken curry, mustard greens curry and fun takes on samosas. Don’t miss the Bombay quesadillas served with chicken or paneer or biryani burritos.

Now a staple at the Dignowity Hill Farmers Market and The Trinity Market, Cocina Heritage is owned by sisters Silvia Alcaraz and Lupita Rivero. The pair are Break Fast and Launch alums who are spreading healthful vegan and often vegetarian snacks at both markets including meat-free tamales, tacos and now kolaches. The savory, veggie-filled or Nutella and fruit bedecked crepes are a Pearl Farmers Market favorite that draw long lines. Get there early and chow down on specials, such as the lox or Strawberry Fields.

Three words: Hong Kong waffle. A few more words: You can get this and other Asian-inspired goodies at Ming’s Thing, both at the Pearl Farmers Market and at its tiny storefront at 5249 McCullough Ave. Get the waffle topped with pulled pork or pork belly or simply dusted with powdered sugar, butter and syrup. You also can’t go wrong with the steamed buns piled high with fresh radishes, carrots and choice of fillings.

Finally, empanadas are nothing new in San Anto, but when made by Leopoldo “Polo” Valdes at Yapa Artisan Empanadas during the Pearl Farmer Market, the city gets a taste for these Andean treats. The Pearl officially welcomed its latest restaurant, Botika, inside the space formerly occupied by Arcade Midtown Kitchen. But you wouldn’t know it based the facelift the space underwent with the help of Courtney + Co. Design.

The aesthetics are understated and most major changes are hardly noticeable. The big wire divider is gone, for starters, and the bar has moved across the way. There’s a new sushi bar where the open kitchen once stood, and a handful of Peruvian wares fixed throughout the location from textiles to baskets and these fun pom-poms I couldn’t get enough of.

The music was lively and even though the restaurant was on a wait for most of the evening, the chatter was never an issue.

On the food front, I sampled a chifa (ginger, green onions, sesame oil, sweet and sour tiger’s milk, wonton strips) and lomo saltado (beef tenderloin, siyao soy sauce, tomato, red onion, crispy fries, fried egg and sweet plantain), while my dining pals opted for the tuna tartar and chifles (ahi tuna, wasabi homemade mayo, green onion, sesame seeds, aji amarillo and green plantain chifles or chips). All dishes were priced between $6 and $16. My chifa was an excellent way to cool off during the heat. My lomo was a bit tough, but the crisp fries and creamed sweet plantain dollops that dotted my plate were dreamy.

Full disclaimer: Chef Geronimo sent out a onigiri trio roll. Though I couldn’t make out what my server described, the two-bite roll was almost too precious to eat. Plated on a Botika-branded wooden board, charred on both sides and topped with a dot of red roe, the spicy crab salad-stuffed roll made for a truly impressive bite.

Long straw Pour your already-mixed margarita into a large, saltrimmed margarita glass, preferably with a hollow stem. Open the Corona and invert into the glass.

> Calling it a cocktail may be a stretch, but this month’s Remix candidate is definitely a classic. It may not meet the standards of propriety and taste of some of our more time-honored and traditional drinks – the Manhattan, the Sazerac – but it’s undeniable summer fun wrapped up in a physics demonstration.

The Mexican Bulldog is called by many other names: Corona-rita, cervezarita, margarona – even, in New Mexico, a Lava Lamp (which is no more random than “bulldog,” I guess). It’s a margarita (usually a slushy frozen one) with a Corona (sometimes a pony, but usually a full-size bottle) jammed upside-down into the glass. Obviously this requires special barware, either a really big glass with a hollow stem or a plastic holder that clips onto the glass and stabilizes the beer bottle. Like that tiki-bar classic the Volcano Bowl, the Bulldog falls into a category of cocktails we might classify as thrill rides: a weird visual appeal plus the ability to get you smashed fast.

The physics part? The beer in a Bulldog (or the liquor in our Remixed Bulldog) seeps slowly into the drink – not all at once, but increasingly as the margarita (or mixer) level goes down. In a Bulldog,

First, lay a towel down on your work surface; spillage is inevitable. Remove the top of the liquor mini (if there’s a plastic or metal ring left on the neck, remove that too).

Next, open the soda and bend the tab so it’s over the opening. Insert your straw. (The tab will keep it from floating out on the carbonation.)

that means you end with a limey beer chaser. In this Remix, that means the drink gets stronger as you sip, not weaker – especially since there’s no ice diluting it.

As for the mechanics of it, Neil DeGrasse Tyson could probably explain better than I, but it’s got something to do with Bernoulli’s principle or Pascal’s law or hydrostatic pressure or fluid dynamics or something.

Leave me alone, science nerds.

Unlike a restaurant that sells Mexican Bulldogs, your kitchen will require very little investment in the way of special equipment for this Remix, and no glassware at all. All you need is an assortment of canned mixers (the short 6- or 8-ounce cans are best), a handful of mini airplane bottles of your favorite liquors, straws (full-length ones, not short) and a churchkey can opener (see photo above).

Back in the day before pop tabs, beer drinkers used the pointy end to “pop a top”; you might still use a churchkey now to get at Hershey’s syrup or any other canned liquid. In the case of this drink, you’re going to use it to make an extra hole in your mixer can, in which you’ll insert a mini liquor bottle. Et voila, a magically self-mixing, stronger-as-you-sip summer cocktail!

≥ Earlier this summer, Sub. Culture quietly released a singles collection — so quietly that the party celebrating the new work was a RSVP-only, secretlocation-type joint. But as the effort’s liner notes say “the best things in life are free,” so group leaders Josh Lucio (Four Hands), Aaron Peña and Ernest Gonzalez have posted the release gratis on their Bandcamp page.

From touches of juke and bass to the pervasive sound of house, the comp finds Sub.Culture with a tip-top bill of health, confirming the team’ status as a collection of San Antonio’s brightest dance producers and electronic artists.

TEFNYK opens up with the heavy-hitting “Kings,” cutting a vocal sample until it shreds into rhythm. When it threatens to get a little one-dimensional, a light, oscillating number comes in to

carry us into the fade.

Four Hands continues with the two-chord delivery of “Strings.” Evoking the harmonic simplicity and rhythmic clusterbombing of DJ Rashad, Four Hands puts his drum loops to work and OT, with just enough space for the whole thing to breath. Later, Mexicans with Guns delivers a standout track in “Canto I (Ninos).” MWG — the pen name of Ernest Gonzalez, a stalwart of SA electronic music — pulls off a tune that sounds like a Sugar Plum Fairy descending melody cut into a trap beat, with the texture of an underground Mario level.

Listening through a singles collection can be a schizophrenic experience, but the group has glued together its influences and styles without showing any of the cracks.

Due to the solitary nature of the game, sometimes it can be tough to hear the progress of a producer, compared to a more live art of an instrumental band. With Sub.Culture’s 2016 comp, the fruits of the group’s “adventures in low frequencies” are laid on the table. And they taste pretty good.

≥ You’ll have to wait until September 30 to hear the Pixies new album, Head Carrier, in its entirety, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a sample of what’s to come.

Last week the rock band released their single “Um Chagga Lagga” from their upcoming sixth full-length album and the second since they reunited in 2003. And towards the end of the song, the band mentions a city that might sound a little familiar: “Um Chagga Lagga, San Antone!”

It is important to note that during his solo career after the Pixies broke up, Francis, who went by the name Frank Black during that time, also wrote a song called “San Antonio, TX” for his 2002 album Devil’s Workshop, which wasn’t exactly a love letter to the city. Per the lyrics: “In San Anton, the state of Texas/Hearing you my dear room all alone/Put me in the cab, I’m flyin’ away/I’m glad to say, I’m finally leaving here.”

How to make the most of this year’s Float Fest

IN AN EFFORT TOWARD TRANSPARENCY, Float Fest should stylize its concert as “Float/Fest,” for the concert and tubing portions are separated like oil and water. Or liquor and river water, for a more suitable metaphor for the occasion. > Unfortunately, you cannot float down the San Marcos and flex to Rick Ross doing “Ima Boss” — unless you do so blasting the Teflon Don from cooler-speakers. Instead, Float Fest offers free shuttles for a tubing trip, ferrying ticketholders to and from the concert grounds at the Cool River Ranch. Now in its third year, we present our highlights for the two-day riverside bash.

To their utmost credit, Float Fest has shown a penchant for Houston rap, with this year’s nod going to Slim Thug. In 2004, the Swishahouse rapper held down the keynote verse on Mike Jones “Still Tippin’,” the song that put the national spotlight on the rap and slang of the City of Syrup. Fast-forward 12 years and international names like Drake and A$AP Rocky are still making hits off his style. But Slim Thug still maintains his slow ‘n’ low appeal — “Nevermind me, I’m just over here ballin’,” he sings on the hook of 2015’s “Nevermind Me,” the greatest humble-brag in the history of the form.

It’s a great time to be a Bone Thugs fan. With jail stints and internal SATURDAY, 6PM conflicts marring the rappers’ 25-year career, all five members are back for 2016 and the impending twelfth album E. 1999 Legends. If you’re like me and like to get drunk and yell “Bone Bone Bone Bone” on cue with the Cleveland quintet and their g-funk whine, an intact BTNH lineup is like hearing the Fab Four are back together.

The world would be a better place if everyone could find the joy and SATURDAY, 9PM satisfaction that Future Islands singer Samuel T. Herring feels in his work. In 2014, a video of the Baltimore band performing “Seasons (Waiting on You)” went viral thanks to Herring’s all-in commitment to the song — including an odd, earnest Jitterbug and a questionable foray into death-metal growling.

Grounded by charming bass lines, Herring overstated grunts and contortions and understated singing make him one of the weirdest and most captivating frontmen on the festival circuit — indie pop’s shaved-and-shirted answer to Iggy Pop. FUTURE ISLANDS

On her new record 99¢, it appears SATURDAY, 10PM that outsider pop star Santi White succumbed to the dollar and airplay demands of Atlantic, her big-wig label since the start. The record is her brightest yet, with a bubblegum stickiness filling the spaces where her darker moods used to be. But the sheen is deceptive. A quick look at the cover —Santigold shrink-wrapped with a bunch of dollar-store knickknacks — suggests a meta-element to the sound.

She’s doing squeaky-clean pop while digging at its commercialism. In the set, a walkthrough the record, plus highlights from the first two albums, should strengthen the Philadelphia rapper and singer’s claim as one of the smartest pop stars around.

If hip-hop is the resounding theme of Saturday’s lineup, Float SUNDAY, 3:30PM Fest on Sunday is dedicated to the synth and lighthearted pop-rock. Wild Moccasins set the tone early on in the day, a Houston quintet dance-pop quintet led by the magnetic Zahira Gutierrez. On their 2014 album88 92, the band gets on the floor to spin Chic, Chromatics and LCD Soundsystem into something their own.

For the past six years, Robert Coppola Schwartzman has been on the Hollywood circuit, trying his luck onscreen and scoring films. Despite the family co-sign — his aunt is Sofia Coppola and mother is Talia Shire, better known as Connie Corleone — Schwartzmann has returned to his first love and supreme talent: writing heartthrob pop for teenagers. On the new Rooney albumWashed Away, Schwartzman and company split the difference between John Hughes teen-dreaming (their old product) and the live-fast attitude of Julian Casablancas. It’s a solid step toward maturity — a little less clean-cut, but not rushing to leather jacket territory just yet.

Is Hall & Oates cool again? By the reception of Chromeo — a digital, millennial adaptation of the seminal ’80s pop cheesers — it appears that corny and delightful music has a place in the hearts of a new generation of dancers.

The duo of French Canadian childhood friends David Macklovitch and Patrick Gemayel began playing together in high school; by the time of their 2004 debut She’s in Control, the pair found an irresistible groove of electro-funk. Cough Since the 1980s, Richmond, Virginia has had a surprisingly large impact in the world of thrash and metal — Municipal Waste, GWAR and Lamb of God all emerged in the city’s first heavy wave of the ’80s and ’90s. Founded in 2005, Cough is at the vanguard of this class, with a relentless merger of sludge and doom metal.

I still love her and miss her. Last week, I wrote her a letter saying that I still love her and want us to get back together. She wrote me a nice letter back saying she doesn’t feel passion for me and we’re never getting back together. Over the past few months, I’ve started dating another girl. Those kinds of marks amount to a nonverbal “tell.” You have a right to calmly point that out to your girlfriend, and she has a responsibility, in the future and in the moment, to remind/warn her outside sex partners that leaving slow-fading marks on her breasts, neck, thighs, forehead, insoles, eyelids, etc., is out of bounds.

For your part, BRUISE, don’t inspect your girlfriend post-hookup for the kinds of marks that fade quickly after sex, as that would amount to a nonverbal ask.

I will also encourage you to immerse yourself in a mood of playful fun as you respond to the following question: “How can I activate and embody an even more complete version of my soul’s code?”

AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): On a summer day 20 years ago, I took my 5-year-old daughter Zoe and her friend Max to the merrygo-round in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park.
