“DIFFERENT SPANKS” Why the local police union won’t change its contract to include disciplinary reforms MICHAEL BARAJAS | @MICHAELSBARAJAS

Last week the San Antonio Police Officers Association officially came out swinging, calling Councilman Rey Saldaña’s increasingly vocal push for reforms to local police disciplinary procedures “misleading” and a “self-serving attempt to build his name to run for higher office.”

At issue is the deal SAPOA and Mayor Ivy Taylor’s office negotiated this past summer to put an end to years of litigation over the union’s previous contract.

Only recently, however, has police reform come to dominate discussions around the deal. Last month Saldaña explained in an email to Taylor’s office why he won’t vote this week on a negotiated contract that still contains disciplinary procedures he calls unacceptable. “The financial implications of the contract are important,” he wrote, “but they should not be paramount to reform efforts.”

Saldaña has been the loudest public official to oppose the new deal with the police union since it was made this summer. He says his opposition is rooted in Article 28 of the contract, which lays out disciplinary rules that basically make it so that department officials and arbitrators hearing a case of officer misconduct can’t always consider a cop’s full disciplinary history when deciding what punishment to give.

As it currently stands, if San Antonio Police Chief William McManus wants to discipline an officer, he can’t cite as justification any drug- or alcohol-related violations more than 10 years old; infractions involving “intentional violence” only follow a cop for five years; any other disciplinary action only shows up for two 12 CURRENT • August 31—September 6 • sacurrent.com

years. If an officer is suspended for three days or less, the department, per the contract, automatically lowers the suspension to a “written reprimand” after a couple of years. Activists opposed to the deal call it government sanctioned falsification of records.

San Antonio police union president Mike Helle, however, doesn’t find a problem with any of this. In a phone interview with the Current last week, after the union sent out a press release excoriating Saldaña and painting him as a painfully ill-informed political opportunist, Helle compared the south side councilman to “a spoiled child” who’s thrown a tantrum without understanding all the facts.

Helle insists the disciplinary policy that Saldaña’s now bucking against is supposed to prevent what he calls “disparity in punishment.” The idea, he says, is that good, longtime officers might have a few reprimands for rudeness or some other minor complaint simply because they’ve been on the force for so long.

It wouldn’t be fair for the department to look at those infractions and more harshly punish the career cop than it would, say, a rookie who committed the same misconduct but doesn’t have a disciplinary history with the department because he hasn’t been there that long.

Or, as Helle put it: “You can’t have different spanks for different ranks. This keeps it so everybody’s on the same playing field.”

Ultimately, Helle says that even if he wanted to change the disciplinary language in the contract (which, to be clear, he does not want to do), doing so would pretty much blow up contract negotiations

between the city and union and probably force them back into court. The negotiations that led to the current agreement “were not routine bargaining...the contract was derivative of court-ordered mediation.” What Saldaña and others are asking for is “out the window,” Helle insisted. “The city chose to forego normal contract negotiations when they sued us. They chose a path that prevents us from doing the things they want us to do now.”

Helle flatly disputed that the union ever told Taylor’s office it wouldn’t consider disciplinary reforms unless there was more money on the table, as City Manager Sheryl Sculley told the ExpressNews editorial board last week. Helle’s version of events: “Here’s what I told the mayor: You can forget about all the traditional things in bargaining because you have put this fight all the way up to the Fourth Court of Appeals, and you have made it so toxic that you’ve virtually made it impossible for me to get anything done and make any changes in this contract.” Helle said the only things on the table were salary, benefits and the contract’s evergreen clause, all of which were tweaked in negotiations.

“I did what I was supposed to do, and that was get a contract and end this lawsuit,” Helle told us. “If Saldaña doesn’t like that, vote no, and risk throwing us back into that mess. See where that gets us.”

Earlier this month, the University of Incarnate Word made the surprising announcement its president of 30 years would be on medical leave for 90 days. In a statement that was emailed to people within the UIW community, board chairman Charles Lutz apologized to anyone offended by “sporadic uncharacteristic behavior and comments” supposedly made by the university’s longtime, bombastic president Louis Agnese Jr. It was a curious statement without much explanation—half denunciation, half pity.

What made things even more confusing: Agnese, 65, was clearly caught off guard and infuriated that the school would call him sick enough to be put on leave without even so much as giving him a heads up (an odd response, considering Lutz’s initial apology to the UIW community claimed Agnese had “requested” medical leave). Last week, Agnese walked back his initial reaction to the Express-News (he’d vowed to “sue the pants” off Lutz), telling the paper he and the administration had come to an understanding. It just wasn’t clear what that understanding was, and Agnese made his leave sound more like an extended vacation than anything medical-related. The university stayed mum, even as anonymous sources chirped to the daily about a possible brain condition being behind Agnese’s strange behavior. Agnese, meanwhile,

insisted there was no medical issue.

Then last Thursday, things got even weirder after the E-N unearthed an anonymous complaint that it says the school received this summer before UIW’s decision to put Agnese on leave. In it, according to the daily, some “very concerned students” claimed Agnese spoke to some students, faculty members and administrators at a luncheon last week, during which he started cracking jokes about skin color.

The complaint said Agnese told one black student he was “lucky” his skin color matched the school’s Cardinal black; similarly, he said a Native American student’s “Indian-red skin color would count as wearing Cardinal red,” according to the complaint. He supposedly quipped about Mormons flooding the computer graphics and design school, and told one other student how lucky she was to be accepted to UIW because of her poor test scores. When a Hispanic faculty member told Agnese he’d called him by the wrong name (Jaime, not José), the president, according to the complaint, told the guy, “Well, close enough, you look like a José.”

What makes the whole situation even curious-er is that some of those who have come to Agnese’s defense since last week claim that underlying this whole mess are allegations of reverse discrimination against the university president. The Rivard Report writes

that Jesus Rangel, a former UIW board member and decades-long friend of Agnese, said this of the president’s current troubles: “The conflict is over a group of faculty complaining to Dr. Agnese that he favors Hispanic and African-American faculty and administrators over non-Hispanic and non-black ones. Agnese rejected that.”

(We reached out to Rangel last week but never heard back.)

Naturally, the board chair, Agnese’s office, and apparently every other university official are now mum on the issue. The UIW press office gave us this opaque statement from Lutz last week: “To confirm, Dr. Lou Agnese is on leave. The University does not condone conduct and comments that are contrary to its Mission.” Agnese’s office redirected us back to those university press handlers, saying the president’s office wouldn’t be making any further comment.

Among the questions that remain after this strange little dustup: Why would the university blame Agnese’s jokes about black, Native American, Hispanic and Indian students and faculty on a medical problem? Why would the university say Agnese has a medical problem when, at least according to him, he doesn’t? What of this complaint from at least some faculty about reverse-discrimination from the president?

Also: WTF is going down at UIW?

A total of nine San Antonio police officers were suspended during the month of June, according to disciplinary records recently obtained by the Current.

Depending on how much you love Whataburger, SAPD Officer Gary R. Nel’s suspension probably makes the most, or least, sense.

During the early morning hours of November 22, 2015, disciplinary reports show, SAPD Officer Gary R. Nel was at a Whataburger in northwest San Antonio eating when a call came in about a “very intoxicated” man who was at that very same location. While Nel was chowing down, another officer showed up at the location and told Nel he was heading outside to confront the suspect. Instead of helping out the other officer, “Nel continued to eat,” suspension paperwork states.

SAPD Chief William McManus initially recommended an indefinite suspension, which means the chief wanted to fire Nel. But after Nel chose to rebut the charges, as allowed under the police union’s collective bargaining agreement, he received a 30-day suspension without pay.

Nel was cited for violating police rules that govern co-worker relationships and for not providing support in a time of danger.

This isn’t the first time Nel’s been in trouble at the department. Nel was suspended for 40 days last May for calling another police officer, who was off-duty, a “fucking idiot” after he pulled the man over for speeding in September 2015, according to KSAT. He also threatened to “beat the fuck out of” the officer he pulled over if he got suspended for not arresting the man. Nel instead issued citations to the officer, who he initially was going to arrest for reckless driving.

Dressed in a sparkling black cocktail dress, faux mink white coat, perfectly-coiffed black-and-white wig and long false lashes, green eye shadow and dark red lipstick, Tristian Ramirez makes his rounds on the convention center floor staking out his next target. Embracing his role as iconic Disney villain Cruella De Vil, Ramirez slowly makes his way over to a group of unsuspecting people for an impromptu performance. Behind all the makeup, his boyish features quickly turn into something more sinister.

“Have you seen any Dalmatians around here?” Ramirez, 20, asks with a mischievous grin across his face. “If you find them, can you bring them to me?”

Sitting at the intersection of drag and costume play, Ramirez is kind of a rarity as a so-called “crossplayer,” a portmanteau of cosplaying and crossdressing, just one of many points along the broad and diverse spectrum of cosplay. For the past two years, Ramirez has decided that he not only wants to dress up as some of his favorite fictional female characters, he wants to immerse himself into the roles.

“I like the whole convergence of drag and cosplay,” Ramirez said. “It’s all about going out, dressing up and getting into character. I’d rather be a villain than a princess because I feel I can have more attitude as the bad girl.”

weekend won’t have to search too hard for cosplayers and other cultural fashionistas who have decided to explore a different side of themselves at the anime convention. From cosplayers and crossplayers to furries and Lolitas and more, San Japan is an event where the clothes one wears are much more than just a fashion statement or pop-culture shout out. There’s a deeper and more complex meaning ingrained into the imagination on display.

“Anime cons like San Japan have really established themselves as safe spaces for anyone who wants to participate,” said David Ramirez, San Japan director of community relations. “We want to be known as a place where people can play with gender identity and roles.”

That’s exactly what crossplayer Ramirez, who goes by the name Tris De Vil, wants when he attends the three-day San Japan convention this year as the 101 Dalmatians antagonist and the Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

While Ramirez, a student at the UT Health Science Center studying Chinese medicine and acupuncture, enjoys the creativity and freedom of crossplay, he also sees it as a way to subvert gender norms. Your gender shouldn’t define what costume you get to rock, he says.

“No one should ever be ashamed of cosplay,” he told us. “It’s a fun sport for everyone, regardless of gender.”

St. Philip’s College student Melanie Reyna, 19, told us she’s not really into “girly stuff” and would rather dress as male anime characters than the scantily clad female characters that dominate the genre. Sure, Reyna would love to attend San Japan as one of her favorite characters — Sinon from the Japanese light novel series Sword Art Online — but Reyna really doesn’t feel like swearing Sinon’s short shorts and a skimpy corset.

“A lot of the [female] outfits are very risqué in my opinion,” Reyna said. “It gives me confidence to walk around as a strong male character without having to exploit myself like most strong female characters in anime.”

Although passing on cosplaying as Sinon, Reyna says she will stick to the world of Sword Art Online and attend San Japan this year dressed as the franchise’s male hero Kirito, who wears a black trench coat with white trim and other black clothing. It’s actually a costume Reyna’s mother didn’t approve of her buying at first.

“She was against me cosplaying as a boy,” Reyna said.

“I bought it anyway. You don’t have to wear what society wants you to wear.”

This year, McCarthy plans to cosplay as Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Yoko, of course, will join her as the Beast and wear the elegant blue suit the shaggy character sports in the ballroom dance scene of the 1991 animated film. Yoko’s fallback outfit is her Nyan Cat costume, based on a popular internet video meme that hit online in 2011 featuring an 8-bit cartoon cat with a Pop Tart body that flies through space leaving behind a rainbow contrail.

However she decides to dress Yoko for San Japan, McCarthy knows she’ll have plenty of four-legged friends to keep her company. The number of service animals participating with their handlers has been increasing, especially over the last two years. Part of the reason, McCarthy said, that people with service dogs usually don’t go to big events is because a majority of other attendees don’t know there is an etiquette that

Along with the two DC Comics villains, you can bet the Pokemon Go rage will result in a bunch of Squirtles and Snorlaxes swarming the convention hall. Due to their ongoing popularity, you’ll probably also meet a lot of Sailor Moons and One Punch Men, so watch that right hook.

So, what do people who want to be those ridiculously popular characters think of all the eye-rolling and inevitable trolling from fellow cosplayers who scoff at the conventional choices?

“I think it’s dumb,” said Jackie Bocangera, 16, who plans to attend all three

With a little more education, McCarthy hopes people understand that while dogs are usually magnets for attention from strangers — especially when they’re dressed up as a Pop Tart cat — a service dog’s main role in public spaces is to do their job for their handler.

“Yoko makes my life a lot easier by taking away all my stress,” McCarthy said. “Before she became a service dog, I was never relaxed and couldn’t truly enjoy San Japan on my own. Not only does she help me with my disability, she also helps me socially. In a sense, she is part of me.”

As Bocangera points out, Harley Quinn might be so popular because she’s such a nuanced character. Since her debut in a 1992 episode of Batman: The Animated Series, Harley Quinn has gone through many adaptations. It’s the classic jester look Carla Garcia hopes will turn heads when she shows it off on the convention floor.

“Classic Harley is just so quirky and awesome and something about her is innocent even though she is insane,” Garcia, 21, said. “Harley from Suicide Squad looks a little bit spunkier and modern, but it would be great for both of them to meet.”

Bottom line: Don’t be a cosplayer hater.

Planning to cosplay as Wolverine from the X-Men at San Japan? Better make sure those claws can’t even cut through butter. Want to make your Thor costume as authentic as possible? Sounds great, but that oversized hammer better be made out of plastic or Styrofoam.

Otherwise you’ll be leaving the convention center faster than you can say, “By Odin’s beard!”

As always, cosplay prop rules will be enforced at the convention this year by staff and the San Antonio Police Department. While Texas became an open carry state at the start of 2016 with the passing of HB 910, which gives licensed gun carriers the right to carry their firearm openly on a holster,

cosplayers dressed like Jonah Hex aren’t getting anywhere near the convention floor with an actual quick-draw revolver.

According to Michael Sawaya, executive director of convention and sports facilities for the City of San Antonio, the city has to allow for open carry in the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center because it’s required by state law.

However, the city’s policy also allows licensees of the venue to determine if open carry is allowed in areas which they have control.

San Japan officials have determined no firearms will be allowed inside the convention center during their event.

“Safety is always the number one priority for San Japan,” said David

Ramirez, San Japan community relations director. “In the past nine years, we’ve mostly figured out how to create guidelines that don’t stifle creativity [and] still create a safe space for our attendees.”

Ramirez adds that San Japan’s prop and weapon policy aligns with the best practices shared by comparably sized conventions in the U.S. and Canada. The policy includes a mandatory prop checkin with SAPD and rules such as no metal blades or sharp edges, no firing of any type of projectiles, including silly string (sorry Spiderman cosplayers) and no solid metal props.

‘Complex 2,’ ‘Remote Viewing,’ ‘On My Mind, Again’ & ‘Esprit de Corps’

◀ Architectural interventions, imagined landscapes, amplified nature and marching bands are but a few of themes examined in four exhibitions opening at the Southwest School of Art on Thursday and remaining on view through October 30. An Indiana-born artist, curator and freelance arts writer who earned his MFA from the Glasgow School of Art, Seth Orion Schwaiger crafts works that aim to “seduce the onlooker into the position of jeopardizing often pre-constructed notions of value and quality.” Presented as the second chapter of his “Complex” exhibition series, his “Complex 2” promises a “radical, anti-passive approach to art viewing and curation” via works that shift and change based on the viewer’s position in the gallery. Drawing from memories and his own imagination, Houstonbased Will Henry creates paintings and drawings that nod to pop culture, art history and Southwestern landscapes. Known for cinematic vistas visited by the occasional floating tumbleweed or flying saucer, his “Remote Viewing” borrows its name from a “pseudoscientific government program wherein the viewer would project themselves into future events for defense purposes.” After living in New York, California and Europe, Austin native Elizabeth Chiles returned home to Texas to further artistic pursuits in photography, video, installation, drawing and language. ‘The Transient Landscape’

◀ Just in time for this year’s more-massive-than-ever Fotoseptiembre bonanza, a new photography exhibition by Ansen Seale opens this week at Flight Gallery. Seale, a local artist and photographer whose primary obsessions include mathematical explorations, nature and interconnectivity, quotes Polish-American semantics scholar Alfred Korzybski: “The map is not the territory.” For Seale, it’s often by the removal of information that we can gain a clearer understanding of reality. In Seale’s exhibit, we see this credo of sorts at work as a clarifying, distilling, disorienting and minimalistic force. “The Transient Landscapes” explores natural and urban landscapes using a digital camera, of Seale’s own invention, that takes thousands of vertical image slices in rapid succession, thereby creating strange time/distance-rooted effects like the absence of perspective or the compression or expansion of objects. ‘Borderland’

▶ An official part of this year’s Fotoseptiembre, despite also sneaking in some sculpture work and painting, “Borderland” is a new exhibit by multimedia artist Sabine Senft. Through her varied methods, Senft ruminates on the harsh experience of crossing the U.S.-Mexico border, something that has become increasingly treacherous. Begun in Marfa in 2013, this exhibit of work also has a distinctly personal side for Senft, as her experiences there led her to relive childhood memories of family tragedies associated with the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain. In this sense, Senft is able to reflect on a very particular (and tense) historical moment and a singularly individual experience, while fostering links between similar populations that have faced similar struggles worldwide. The frankly haunting exhibit, ideally, can serve to draw empathy and understanding to the plight of displaced populations everywhere, especially in our own backyard. For José Rubén De León, securing Sandra Cisneros’ blessings to direct The House on Mango Street was easy. Making it a reality was a different matter.

“It almost didn’t happen,” De León told the Current during a rehearsal break in early August. “A play like Mango Street gets produced, but not a lot. You have to pay for the adaptation and you have to pay Sandra. This was a little hurdle that came about, and at one point the theater said, ‘Hey, we can’t afford this.’” De León even sent Cisneros a note, telling her that the project would be postponed until further notice, but Cisneros reassured him: “Don’t worry about it. I’m sure it’s going to be okay.” The play, based on Amy Ludwig’s stage adaptation (as acclaimed as the book itself, and not to be confused with Tanya Saracho’s 2009 musical version), opens this Friday at The Classic Theatre of San Antonio and runs through September 25.

“I don’t know how it happened,” said De León. “When I asked the theater how they were able to pull it off, they said, ‘We just did it!’” The Classic Theatre’s executive director, Kelly Roush, told the Current no sets of royalties were waived or reduced and both Cisneros’ and Ludwig’s camps came to an agreement with the theater.

“Yes, we were concerned at one point, but it’s such an important story and an exciting time to do it here with José, that we decided to take the chance and pay more than we usually do,” she said over the phone.

The book itself isn’t a conventional novel but a coming-of-age collection of vignettes that present an unusual challenge to the eight-actor cast, each of which plays an average of eight to The House on 10 characters who come on and off stage almost constantly, Mango Street $10-$25 using Esperanza Cordero (Gypsy Pantoja playing the older Sept. 2-25 version of the teenager that is the book’s backbone) as the 8pm Fri-Sat, 3pm Sun narrator who holds everything together.

De León auditioned 26 actors for eight characters and, precisely, the only role that was pre-cast was that of the older Esperanza. “[Pantoja as the older Esperanza] anchors the whole thing,” said De León. “I know her very well, and I knew she was the right person for the part.” The key role of “Little

Esperanza,” the young teenager growing up in Chicago, was cast with a bang but soon gave the play an unexpected, bitter turn.

The role was originally given to 11-year-old Valentina Inés Ibarra, who has been acting “since I was inside my mom’s womb, literally” (she’s the daughter of playwright/ actor/director Marisela Barrera).

“I asked Marisela if her daughter would want to audition, and the little girl came and blew me away,” De León told the Current in early August. “No one auditioned better than her.” However, last week — eight days before opening — she was replaced by Eraina Porras (last seen in Enfrascada at the Guadalupe in April), who was already part of the cast playing a variety of roles.

A “pissed” Barrera took to Facebook to announce her boycott of the play, to defend her daughter and to condemn the way The Classic Theatre handled the situation.

“My daughter was abruptly let go … because her lines were not down,” wrote Barrera. “And she had chingos of lines, most of the lines in the play.” Barrera said that, on Wednesday night, she was asked into executive director Roush’s office and was given the news. Her request to give her daughter 48 hours to memorize the lines, she said, was denied. Barrera wrote that the meeting with Roush should’ve taken place two weeks earlier, “in order to give my daughter a running chance to turn it around” and that De León “should’ve kept her in the ensemble, maybe with a smaller role; there are dozens of roles in the play ... Essentially, the theater has lost the very message of the play: hope, the central theme of The House on Mango Street."

“A child is involved and I respect [Barrera] and Valentina’s feelings,” De León told the Current in a text message on Thursday night. He and the theater had no further comments … until late Thursday night, when De León sent an update via text: “We have a 12-year-old who has stepped [up],” wrote De León, adding that the girl is Bella Villarreal, daughter of local politician Mike Villarreal. “The child actress blew us away. She is a natural.”

The rest of the cast includes Gabriel Sánchez, Joshua Segovia, María Ibarra and Arianna Angeles (who, among other characters, play the parts of Lucy and Rachel, the Texan neighbors in the book, respectively) and Salvador Valadez (who played the character of Chale in the Guadalupe’s Spring production of Chato’s Bridge).

The book, first published in 1984, won an American Book Award in 2015, was translated into several languages and made The New York Times’ bestseller list. A testament to its staying power, Chicago’s National Museum of Mexican Art recently created a Mango Street-inspired exhibition (featuring contributions from several San Antonio artists, including Al Rendón, Andy Benavides, Vincent Valdez and Franco Mondini-Ruiz) that’s on view at Albuquerque’s National Hispanic Cultural Center through September 25.

In 1995, Cisneros’ body of work earned her a $500,000 MacArthur “Genius Grant,” which the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation gives annually to individuals who show “extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction.”

“Sandra Cisneros has made a difference to Latino literature,” wrote CubanAmerican Pulitzer-winning author Oscar Hijuelos. “Beginning with House on Mango Street, her works have conveyed the Southwestern Latino experience with verve, charm, and passion.”

In the book, Esperanza’s struggle (yearning to leave Mango Street yet always coming back to it) is presented in a way anyone can identify with.

“With its tenderness, its humor, and its wide-eyed truth-telling, Esperanza’s story becomes our story, whether we’re Latinas or not,” wrote Cuban-American author Cristina García. But it isn’t an easy book to stage, and if the challenges presented by the book and play aren’t enough, the 99-seat Classic Theatre’s in-the-round design (with the audience seated on both sides of the stage) doesn’t make things any easier.

“I’ll give them permission to create, it’s going to be an organic kind of creation,” said De León. “I don’t think many of them have worked in the round. When I was in Laredo, I was directing in the round so I have experience in that; I told them how I was going

to navigate them through that process, but also to give them the opportunity to play.

They’re going to have to switch almost immediately: They leave and come back on stage with a different character, they’re always moving forward with the stories. They’re all very excited because there aren’t many plays that give them that kind of opportunity.”

For De León, directing a play by Cisneros is special. Not only did Cisneros suggest De León perform the Agustín Lara show (“Just listen to the music; I’m sure he’s going to grab you and then he’s not going to let you go,” she told him — and that’s exactly what happened), she encouraged and supported his work throughout the years.

Directing Mango Street is his humble way to give back to a person who deserved a better treatment from San Antonio.

“I used to go to a lot of these gatherings at her home [in San Antonio], and I feel people took advantage of her,” De León said. “She gave and gave and gave, and people just took and took and took. They just sucked her energy, you know? People felt entitled, because they were her friends or they hung around with her, that she needed to support them, buy all their art or promote them. I saw it.”

Amy Ludwig’s adaptation of The House on Mango Street hasn’t been performed in San Antonio since Jump-Start Performance Co. staged it 21 years ago, and De León has also secured permission to eventually direct Elena Poniatowska’s Spanishlanguage version of the play, which the Mexican author gave to Cisneros as a present on the book’s 25th anniversary in 2009.

“Spanish and/or bilingual theater in San Antonio is on my to-do list,” said De León.

“But first things first, and I’m excited with my cast for Mango Street. I wanted to make sure I had people who could do the work, otherwise I would not have tackled it. You can’t spend rehearsal periods training actors, so I wanted people who are ready to play and create, and that’s what I got.”

Sandra Cisneros’ nearly 30-year, on-and-off relationship with San Antonio is a dysfunctional one. Here she found enough love to move from her native Chicago in 1984 and establish her Macondo Writers’ Workshop, but also enough people “throwing rocks at you” that, in 2013, she packed her things and moved out quicker than you can say Caramelo. Even the Current took part in the rock-throwing via an infamous 1998 cover story (subtitled “¿Santa? ¿Puta? ¿Heroine? ¿Spin Artist?”) and another in 2012 (“So Long, La Sandra”) shortly after the ever-nomad departed for San Miguel de Allende, where she appears to have finally found her roots.

After much hustling, I was only able to secure a 10-minute phone interview with Cisneros — but she opened up and spoke for almost half an hour in English and Spanish about everything from José Rubén De León’s take on The House on Mango Street to her upcoming visit to San Antonio and San Marcos in October, when she’ll officially present her literary papers recently acquired by Texas State University’s Wittliff Collections. Paperback and Spanish-language editions of her nonfictional 2015 collection A House of My Own: Stories from My Life are due out in September. She’s already working on her next book, but “can’t talk about it now.”

> What was your first reaction when De León approached you to direct Mango Street? I’ve been following his work for a long, long time. He’s very professional in everything he does. There were different productions of Mango Street, some better than others, and when José approached me, I have to say that knowing the caliber of work that he does, the [Federico García] Lorca production [The House of Bernarda Alba], his music, everything, I felt I could trust him. I have a lot of confianza in him. I said yes, but told him the production I loved the most was the one Amy Ludwig created, which is pretty faithful to the book. He had a lot of great questions and suggestions about the characters. I don’t know exactly what he’s going to do, but I’m very excited because I know I’m going to see something that [has] never been done before, even though the Jump-Start production [21 years ago] was great. > Did you do anything on your end to make the play happen? José told me that, at one point, he felt

he wasn’t going to be able to put the show together.

Something to do with permits…I don’t know what my agent told him, but we hold a very tight control of my stuff, my agent and I. I don’t want the wrong people to do something dreadful; we always want to keep the integrity of the piece. Permisos? No sé, la verdad no sé. > I don’t know how you feel about it, but I still feel sorry and embarrassed by the way you left San Antonio. I think some people didn’t understand we were lucky to have you here. You deserved better treatment. As soon as I got there and for as long as I lived there, I felt I never was embraced. There was a lot of conflict, mainly in the artistic community, not the community at large. The artistic community is a small one and there’s a lot of insecurities that people have. And I understand why people would act like that. I came from outside and there is a history in Texas of people coming from outside and taking what was theirs. I do understand and have a lot of compassion for that.

But I also think San Antonio has very little money and opportunities for the arts. A lot of times, a lot of people are fighting for the same scrap or job, so there’s a lot of rivalries when there shouldn’t be. I tried to do the best I could, but … Hay mucha infelicidad in the arts. I tried to do what I could to create more opportunities for artists when I got there. There’s tons of good artists in San Antonio, visual arts, but it’s not necessarily a great town in terms of opportunities for writers. We made some change through Macondo, creating a coalition of writers, but that kind of change requires a great deal of effort and cooperation from the artists themselves, and that’s hard to do without sacrificing their own writing.

For me it was hard, because many people opened doors for me and helped me, many people helped my success, and you have to give back, that’s just the truth, you have to do that. In retrospect, I see there was a lot of envidia. I see I was the target of some people’s unhappiness, but I don’t think I was the source of it.

I just think it was a reflection of how little there is for writers, especially in San Antonio. > Did it make you sad, frustrated, angry? Yes, it was frustrating, and yes, all of the above, of course. You’re in the trenches and there’s people throwing rocks at you, you can’t help but take it personally. People say, “Oh,

Sandra, don’t take it personally,” but still, you do. At the time, it was very distracting for the work I was supposed to be doing. But now, in retrospect, I understand how difficult it is to be a writer in the Southwest, especially a writer of color, especially now, it’s very difficult. But the little Macondo seed worked, because there are several writers who are publishing. I’m a connector, that’s what I do. I help people nourish each other. > That damn “Puta” cover … I hate it when gringos use Spanish words without understanding their meaning. That was a reflection of the writer’s own unhappiness. I hope she found her own fulfillment as a writer. It was totally disrespectful, but I forgive that writer. I hope she finds a lot of success. I think she had an agenda before she even began talking to me. Pero que le vaya bonito. I wish her a lot of success, because once a writer finds success they don’t have to be so angry and attack others. That violence says more about her own state of being. > Are you finally established in San Miguel, Guanajuato, land of beautiful churches? Desde mi ventana veo cuatro iglesias. >Will you be able to stay there and control your nomad spirit? In Texas, I never felt embraced. I received a lot of support, but I felt more a parent than a daughter. If I never felt embraced in Texas after so many years, I will not find it anywhere else in the Southwest.

So I came here, where I have roots. My ancestors lived here during the Mexican Revolution. At last, I feel that I finally came to the land of my ancestors. I feel a very strong connection, as if my ancestors had guided me here. But I always come back to San Antonio — which is very close — and Chicago, where I have a lot of friends … Norma Cantú, John Phillip Santos, Lionel and Kathy Sosa, Arturo and Antonia Madrid and lots of other people who helped me a lot. I don’t feel I “left” any place.

You can never do things by yourself, there’s always a colectivo that helps you. And I’d rather talk about those people who helped me, instead of a few mosquitoes.

I don’t have to give them any more importance. The number of people who support me is much greater than those who bother me, so I just want to send a lot of light to those unhappy mosquitos.

What a terrible summer! We saw unabashed hate speech, institutional tyranny and tin-hat conspiracy theories collide to create an almost complete disintegration of the American social fabric. And that was just people Tweeting about Ghostbusters ! Thankfully, we’re almost past the superhero cape-strewn dog days of summer and into awards season, where most films are forced to project at least a pretense of quality. In order to prepare, film critic Daniel Barnes selected his five most anticipated films of the next few months, as well as his five favorite films of the year so far.

Top 5 Most Anticipated Films on the Horizon Sully (September 9)

> After J. Edgar, Jersey Boys and American Sniper, this is the fourth Clint Eastwood-directed film in a row that deals with the myth of an American legend (or the legend of an American myth, if you prefer). Having already tackled the government, celebrity and the military, Sully concerns itself with civilian heroism, covering the 2009 “Miracle on the Hudson” incident in which airline pilot

Manchester by the Sea (November)

> This drama starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams garnered a lot of critical buzz coming out of Sundance, but all I care about is that Manchester by the Sea is the first film directed by Kenneth Lonergan since his doomed but brilliant Margaret. The 135-minute running time of Manchester is less imposing than the three-hour-long Margaret, but Lonergan’s gift for unsparing emotional honesty and novel-like construction will almost certainly remain intact.

La La Land (December) > Whiplash director Damien Chazelle returns with this unapologetic movie musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, playing young creatives brought together by struggle and torn apart by success. The film is also supposed to be a love letter to Los Angeles (fans have spent the past year slavering over a still of Gosling and Stone jitterbugging through Griffith Park), so hopefully Chazelle can invest La La Land with an exuberant melancholy reminiscent of early Alan Rudolph.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (December 16)

> One year ago, barely a decade removed from the hell of the prequels, I couldn’t imagine ever wanting even one more Star Wars movie, let alone one a year until the end of time. But that’s the magic of J.J. Abrams’ generally acceptable The Force Awakens — it hit the reset button while still forging strong connections with the original three, yet didn’t set a bar too high for subsequent films to clear. Godzilla director Gareth Edwards helms this side story, set between Episodes III and IV.

Silence (Christmas)

> This pick rides on a wing and a prayer, since Martin Scorsese’s reportedly 195-minute epic starring Liam Neeson and Andrew Garfield as Jesuit missionaries in 17th-century Japan probably hasn’t locked in a final cut yet (the film was originally slated for a 2015 awards season release). But when a long-gestating passion project from the greatest living director is at stake, it can’t hurt to hope for a Christmas miracle.

Top 5 Films of the Year So Far

1. Only Yesterday

> A bit of a cheat, since this richly detailed animated masterpiece from Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata was made in 1991, but the film only received an American release this year thanks to GKids. Only Yesterday is as delicate as Ozu, as powerful as Kurosawa, as possessed as Mizoguchi and as hauntingly beautiful as any film ever made.

2. Three

> This genre-hopping blast from prolific Hong Kong filmmaker Johnnie To works as part solemn morality play and part gonzo white-knuckle thriller, part huge-hearted ensemble dramedy and part pitiless three-hander, with an almost unbearable escalation of tension that explodes into one of the most insane action sequences you’ll ever see.

3. The Witch

> Robert Eggers’ unsettling “New England Folk Tale” only improves on re-watch, presenting a pre-industrial world so wracked with hypocrisy and repression that consort with the devil becomes the only sensible feminist option. A soul-withering, vaguely sexual slow creep in the vein of Under the Skin, The Witch feels authentic both as Pilgrim anthropology and as a waking nightmare.

4. Krisha

> Another excellent movie about the nightmare of family, only written and directed by and starring an actual family. Insanely talented rookie director Trey Edward Shults remakes his 2014 short film with this low-budget gut punch of a Thanksgiving weekend, using his parents’ house as the location and enlisting most of his family as actors. It sounds like a Sundance torture chamber, but the film has energy and style to burn.

5. Love & Friendship

> Whit Stillman’s first foray into adaptation is an absolute delight, an intelligently dizzy and refreshingly wordy take on Jane Austen’s novella Lady Susan. There is an almost perfect overlap between the sensibilities of Stillman and Austen, to the point that all of Stillman’s previous films now feel like reverse-engineered Austen adaptations.

Bubbles and sushi blend beautifully at Sukeban

Sukeban, Blue Star’s sushi and sparkling wine bôite with an anime vibe, has been open long enough now to get its groove. The cheeky boss-girl and Samurai sword-wielder murals suggested irreverence from the get-go, while the shou sugi ban (charred wood) wall cladding (most of us first saw it used in SA at Kimura), suggested a nod to the traditional past. Where does that leave us? Right about where you think it might: deliciously in between attitudes.

For starters (and it makes a good one), sparkling wine isn’t what most of us first think of when Japanese cuisine comes to mind; for those of a classic bent, several sakes (you may safely skip the warmed carafe), and a number of fine Japanese whiskies are available.

But it’s the sparklers that are the true passion of Gerry Shirley, who, along with his wife Mon, are the twin poles of the place. The list, not including a $15 flight of three, stretches to 22 offerings at prices from $25 for a modest prosecco to $275 for a boss-man Roederer Cristal, but I have had the best luck just asking Shirley what’s new, what he’s willing to open, what he most wants to share …

The best and most recent example was a Quattro Mani Franciacorta brut from the Italian region many think of as offering tremendous value in Champagne-style wines. Yeasty-toasty on the nose, it offered up apple (even baked apple) on the palate, and it was sensational

both solo and with sashimi — about which more later. On an earlier visit, the discovery was a maverick, brut nature Champagne uncharacteristically made from 100 percent pinot blanc by Francois Diligent. More delicate than the Franciacorta, it set one up with white flowers and citrus then followed up with green apple and more citrus.

None of this would be of interest if the wines didn’t work with the food, of course.

So here’s an experiment: place an order of nigiri or sashimi, take a tiny bit of the wasabi that will appear alongside (you can dilute it with soy sauce), and then follow it with a sip of your sparkler. Does it work for you?

It did for me, with the bubbles racing along the tongue in pursuit of the sharpness of the wasabi. The irony, however, is that the wasabi-soy dip, which most of us are used to using no matter what, is often not needed or wanted at all. I wouldn’t use it with the spicy scallop nigiri, for example; it already comes spiked with a zingy soy-mayo in which tiny beads of tobiko have been bathed. The pop of the roe, the slight burn of the sauce … they’re perfect playmates for a flute of bubbly.

Of course, the scallops don’t really stand a chance in such a confrontation. If it’s the pure taste of fish you’re after, head straight for the sashimi — and if your server suggests that a particular offering is good right now, pay attention. The suggestion landed me an especially fresh and delicate order of silky, sliced yellowtail. It was so

pristine, in fact, that I almost totally resisted dunking in the soy-wasabi — though I might have liked a little flaky sea salt or a splash of yuzu. Again, the bubbly was boss.

I’d also have it with the Japanese omelet, done expertly here, that many consider to be another real test of a sushi joint.

With rolls, however, the equation changes, maybe even to beer or a well-crafted cocktail from the bar — in part because I’m always a little leery of them. I couldn’t bring myself to order the signature Bossgirl roll, for example; it had strawberry and goat cheese in addition to two tunas. And, as advised by Mon, the Ninja roll with softshell crab is really there for folks who are shy of raw seafood. The Kareshi roll with tuna, yellowtail avocado and mango first won me over visually; the warm Tiger Eye with smoked salmon and pickled carrot stuffed inside of squid and served with eel sauce triumphed out of sheer invention and more cheek.

If the nigiri and sashimi are well-executed (and handsomely presented) and the rolls a question of preference, plates that come out of the kitchen have batted around .500. The ribeye mini-taco probably deserves its own, non-Mexican moniker to avoid comparison; you get two crispy wafers, the roughly chopped beef is well seasoned but a little overdone for my taste. Same goes for anything wagyu; this is beef that deserves to be very rare, and so far it hasn’t come out that way in the skewers. But the chicken yakitori is on point, and the kitchen does a fine job with tempura shrimp. Tuna poké, the current darling of the food world, is available for $12; you are advised that the large plate of serrano whitefish is also raw and seriously spiked.

Cool Asian Desserts

> We’re THIS CLOSE to rolled ice cream (which is so hot or should we say cold right now), but until then, San Antonians with a sweet tooth can get their fill of Taiwanese shaved snow when Snopioca opens Saturday, September 3.

The shop, opened by Texas transplant Steven Lee and business partner Jerry Han, will occupy more than 2,000-square-feet. Asian shaved snow or ice uses dairy products and flavoring, which are frozen and then shaved into ribbon-like layers. The result is fluffy and soft, milky but not yet creamy and customizable.

Snopioca’s starting lineup of flavors will include the basic cream, mango, strawberry, taro root, honeydew and matcha green tea. As customers come into the shop, they’ll fill out a paper slip with choice of ice, fruits, toppings and syrups. A regular serving will cost $5.25 plus tax for one topping and one drizzle and a large will cost $7.25 for two toppings and one drizzle.

Lee hopes to turn Snopioca into a late-night snack shop where patrons can enjoy the shaved ice until 2 a.m.

The grand opening for Snopioca is scheduled for Saturday, September 3 at noon. The first 25 customers through the door will receive free dessert vouchers valid until the end of 2016.

opened December 2014 is closing its doors.

Opened by Tapa Tapa truck owner and chef Rudolfo Martinez, Concrete Jungle served up rum-fueled punches and cocktails along with Caribbean grub. The bar grew popular on DJ nights, but Martinez said the bar's last day was Saturday, August 27.

Edna’s, named after his mother, will have an icehouse feel with “chingos of beer,” and complete with pool tables, which will likely jibe with the neighborhood better than a tiki-themed cocktail bar.

Paramour, Downtown’s first public rooftop bar as of yet, turned one on August 25 with drink specials, shots, anniversary cake and general debauchery throughout the weekend.

It’s hard not to reflect on what the bar’s opening has meant for the bar scene as a whole.

For its paper anniversary, I decided to look back on some of its best moments, its slightly offputting ones and everything in between.

The View: Until The St. Anthony’s rooftop bar opens to the public, Paramour will be THE patio bar to while away an afternoon or evening and watch the sunset over San Antonio. Since opening after an almost-year-long wait, the view always provides for a fun photo during the Golden Hour. San Antonio’s low-key grandeur is present while glancing at a haunting SAMA, a quiet Central Catholic, a laid-back River Walk complete with strolling tourists and jogging locals, and a demure skyline. That view is 50 percent of Paramour’s decor.

The Upscale Factor: General Manager Chris Ware, an Amarillo native, former Marine and disciple of cocktail legend Sasha Petraske, made it clear that Paramour wasn’t going to be Cheers.

From our earliest interview with him 10 months before the bar officially opened, Ware stressed the upscale vibe he and his growing crew were trying to achieve. That meant hiring on Hilmy production company to handle most of its interior art, outfitting the bar with honey-toned onyx that beckons like the amber-encased mosquito in Jurassic Park, packing the place with plush leather seating and filling it to the gills with highend booze. It’s extravagant, posh, seductive and cheeky (hello, Tom Selleck and Burt Reynolds portraits in the powder room). It’s what you want out of an illicit affair (I’m guessing): high-octane and almost unattainable theatre.

The Booze: Bottles of bubbles, expensive, hard-to-find Japanese whiskeys, the prettiest rosé you’ve ever did taste. Are all there, along with one of the city’s best barrel-aged programs and a punny cocktail list. Professional boozers will always find something to imbibe here.

The Clientele: Movers and shakers are familiar with the fourth floor of the Phipps. So are a gaggle of Stone Oak party-goers. So are the begrudging boyfriends that are dragged along to the bar to snap one too many photos against that beautiful skyline. Trips to Paramour mean running into at least one person you know, and 50 you don’t (the convention crowd that pops up on Tinder on a weekly basis, perhaps?), and I’ll ask this again, “Do they even go here?”

The Dress Code: Though initially not implemented when they first opened, Paramour does abide by some sort of dress code come weekends. It’s not posted, so I couldn’t tell you what it is, but anecdotally, gym shorts, baseball caps, tennis shoes and graphic tees have been frowned upon.

Post it so the general public can abide by it wholeheartedly, or keep out wouldbe customers who prefer a more casual wardrobe ... then again, Cheers this is not.

The Parties: From the San Antonio Cocktail Conference closing party held this January to the DNC soiree hosted this summer, Ware and his crew know how to host an adult rager for 2,000 or an exclusive wedding for several dozens or a chill, but hella-cool party for Tony Parker’s birthday. sculptures, the coldest booze and maybe even a four-story-tall Champagne bong (that I’m still shocked I didn’t pick anything up from).

The Menu: After adding coffee in December, making Paramour one of the most laid-back and picturesque coffeeshops in town, the bar has quietly added a growing food menu filled with charcuterie, grilled cheese sandos, and now a few breakfast selections. Classy snacks for a classy bar.

The Outfits: The cocktail servers, all female, went from wearing chic rompers to gaudy Tilted Kilt-esque ensembles. I get it.

This is a bar, generally managed by men, and patronized by men and owned by a man ... but are the outfits really adding that much more? Aren’t the undercurrents of wink-wink and overtones of sexy (provided by the luxurious space and pin-up pillows) enough? My fellow sistren and I won’t stop going anytime soon — did I mention the insane rosé list, Burt Reynold’s fuzzy form in the ladies’ room and picture-friendly backdrop? — but I’m pretty sure no one wakes up in the morning itching to put on a short pleated skirt and bloomers for work.

This isn’t Hooters, so don’t dress your servers like it is.
