¶ Lay it down, clown
¶ Welcome to the Thunderdome
Last week Fox News’ Tucker Carlson floated the so-called “Great Replacement theory,” which argues that white Americans are being replaced by non-European ethnicities in service of a grand political project by the Democratic party, and the Anti-Defamation League pointed out that this is both laughable (really, who thinks the party that couldn’t shoot straight could pull together a scheme of this size?) and deeply racist (if you think white Americans are the “real Americans,” we’ve got some indigenous people who’d like a word) (“Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz defends racist ‘replacement theory’ after Tucker Carlson shares it with viewers,” Sept. 27). No big surprise there. Somewhat more surprising — because your average man who’s staring down prison doesn’t go around touching third rails — Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz popped up out of his social pariah-dom to both defend Carlson and call the ADL themselves racists. Classic!
Visit Florida Chairman Danny Gaekwad told members of the Enterprise Florida Board of Directors last Wednesday that the embattled tourism agency will request millions of dollars for marketing during the upcoming legislative session, and will ask lawmakers to extend an Oct. 1, 2023, “sunset” date for the agency (“Visit Florida asks for $75 million, increased lifespan to bring tourists back to state,” Sept. 30). So weird that people are staying away from Florida this year, hmm, why could that be the case …
@Liz Miller: Look, I may not agree with the way Matt Gaetz handles his personal life, but he is an elected official and I will defend to the death his right to be dragged from Congress in handcuffs, humiliated, disgraced, tried for his crimes and thrown straight the f*ck into prison.
Last week an Orlando man, Army veteran Abdul Gene Malik, trapped an alligator in his driveway with a garbage bin. (“Orlando man traps alligator using only a trash can in viral video,” Sept. 29.) The next day, Jonathan “Song a Day Guy” Mann immortalized Malik’s extremely moto deed in music (“Someone wrote a song about the Florida man who trapped an alligator in a trash can,” Sept. 30). These are the days of our lives.
@Karl Frutchey: It’s too bad they can’t just be honest & say they hate brown people. Gaetz is just [ed. note: allegedly] a child sex trafficking Republican. Apparently the GOP supporters in Florida like that stuff. He just likes to have sex with children and sell them to his friends. Maybe Tucker is one of his special friends too. @William Jarvis: 1990s right-wing talking point: We support *legal* immigration. 2020s talking point: Mein Kampf! @Minna Alstein: Why does he still have his job?
“I BELIEVE YOU, MY GUY”
@Paul Kern: DeSantis’ anti-science propaganda has turned us into a leper colony. It’s easy to see why regaining tourism will be a serious problem. @Michael Reinhardt: Give the money to the people living in Florida rather than to tourism.
¶ Later, gator
@Julie Wilder: We NEEDED this song. Music for the win. @Carla Guinta: That is awesome! Central Florida needs to name an OC Balladeer or a group and write songs to be passed down the generations of all Florida Man activities! Send bouquets and brickbats to: feedback@orlandoweekly.com

Rep. Don Beyer, D-Virginia, reintroduces the Fair Representation Act each session
US AGAINST THEM
Our democracy is failing. A multi-party system could fix it, but that’s unlikely to happen anytime soon BY JEFFREY C. BILL M A N
In a survey taken this summer by the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics, 83% of Trump voters agreed with this statement: “There are many radical, immoral people trying to ruin things; our society ought to stop them.” More than four in five Trump voters also believed that “our country needs a powerful leader in order to destroy the radical and immoral currents prevailing in our society today” (i.e., a strongman), while 44% agreed that the country would be “better off if whoever is President could take needed actions without being constrained by Congress or the courts,” and 52% voiced support for red states leaving the union. Scary, right? Before liberals jump on their high horse, consider this: 65% of Biden voters think “radical, immoral people” are trying to ruin the country; 62% agreed with the strongman statement; 46% said the president shouldn’t be constrained by the co-equal branches of government; and 41% favored secession. I’m not a both-sides kind of guy. The Republican Party has been heading in a radical, anti-democratic direction since the Gingrich revolution, its trajectory hastened by conservative racial anxiety during the Obama presidency, which segued into the nativist populism of Donald Trump. As leading political scientists recognized, the GOP has morphed from a center-right coalition into an “ideologically polarized, internally unified, vehemently oppositional, and politically strategic” party better suited to parliamentary systems than presidential ones. But in politics as in physics, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The more norms Republicans break, the less apt Democrats are to play by the old rules. It’s long been obvious that ours isn’t a representative
democracy. Republican presidential candidates have won the popular vote once since 1992, but they held the White House for 12 of those 29 years. Joe Biden won 7 million more votes than Trump, but because of the Electoral College, Trump came within 50,000 well-placed votes of maintaining his office. Democratic senators represent about 56% of the U.S. population, but because Wyoming and North Dakota have the same representation as California and New York, the fate of the Democratic agenda rests on the legitimate concerns about the debt/taxes/inflation, and/or the mercurial whims of moderates from West Virginia and Arizona. (Choose your own adventure.) Because those moderates have given their Republican colleagues a veto over non-budgetary legislation. Because Republicans have wielded that veto — the filibuster — mercilessly, Senate rules forced Democrats to cram most of their initiatives into one massive package. The more moving parts, the greater the chance something goes wrong. As I write this, progressives are holding up the bipartisan infrastructure deal to give themselves leverage to prevent moderates from watering down the reconciliation package’s social and climate provisions. This standoff exists because of the filibuster. The filibuster’s existence, in turn, feeds the sense that “Washington” is broken, which diminishes trust in institutions, which gives rise to authoritarian movements. Add to that an extremist Supreme Court likely to demolish abortion rights, and red-state legislatures talking openly of rigging the next presidential election — this after Trump urged Vice President Pence to simply declare him the victor on Jan. 6, which would have sparked the biggest constitutional crisis since the Civil War — and it’s no wonder that Democrats are taking an anti-democratic turn.
Democracy is failing. The funny thing is, the Center for Politics survey found bipartisan support for major elements of Biden’s agenda: More than 80% of Trump voters support improving the electric grid, upgrading water and sewer systems, and investing in roads and bridges; majorities of Trump voters back paid family leave, universal pre-K, increased rural broadband internet, and raising taxes on those making more than $400,000 a year. More than 40% of Trump voters even support free community college and legislation to ban right-to-work laws. What divides us isn’t political but cultural — a sense that the other side is destroying the country and our side has to stop them. Every fight becomes existential. That sentiment erodes rationality, nurtures conspiratorial beliefs and creates space for demagogues. In the Washington Post, the conservative Henry Olsen writes, “We have resolved such moments before. We have done this peacefully, aside from the Civil War, because shrewd leaders such as Thomas Jefferson defused conflicts by persuading large numbers of the other side’s partisans to defect to new coalitions.” It would be nice if we didn’t have to look back 220 years for a peaceful resolution. For that matter, it would be nice if the Republican Party weren’t so reminiscent of the 1850s Southern Democrats. Indeed, that’s where Olsen’s analysis falls short: Persuasion fails when differences are bound up in identity, not policies. Since the Civil Rights Act, American politics has become less about what we believe and more about team allegiance. But Republicans also reveal the solution to the crisis they caused. The GOP has eroded democratic guardrails by gaming the system to its advantage — in other words, by functioning like a parliamentary party in a presidential system that relies on norms and good faith to operate. If it were one of several parties in a parliamentary system — alongside Greens, Socialists, traditional Democrats, traditional conservatives, Libertarians, etc. — that had to form a coalition to govern, however, that wouldn’t be the case. Multiparty democracies foster compromise and inclusivity. And ruling coalitions have few constraints on their ability to govern, which makes them more responsive and accountable to voters. There’s a way to move in that direction. The Fair Representation Act, a bill introduced each session by Democratic Rep. Don Beyer of Virginia, would establish multimember congressional districts drawn by an independent redistricting commission, with members elected by ranked-choice voting. Long story short, it would lead to more proportional representation in the House. That, along with ranked-choice voting in presidential and Senate elections — you can’t do away with the Constitution’s two-senators-per-state edict — the elimination of the filibuster, and the obviation of the Electoral College through the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, would go a long way toward making our democracy more (small d) democratic. It would also upend the prevailing power structure, so it’s unlikely to happen anytime soon. Maybe we’ll consider it when 75% of the country wants to secede. Florida-based marijuana retailer is now the largest in the nation BY DARA KAM, NSF
T
rulieve, the state’s largest medical marijuana operator, is now the nation’s biggest cannabis retailer, after closing on a $2.1 billion deal to acquire former competitor Harvest Health & Recreation Inc. The transaction marks a major development in Florida, where Harvest held one of 22 licenses to cultivate, process and sell medical marijuana to a growing patient population, and in the nation’s rapidly expanding pot industry. Trulieve CEO Kim Rivers called the closing of the deal a “transformational milestone” in her Gadsden County– based company’s brief history. “When we really started five short years prior, I wasn’t taking a salary and I was in the back making capsules and ensuring that shipments went out on time. Obviously, there’s been incredible growth. We started this company with patients in mind and with an absolute dedication to a steadfast focus on providing access and medical cannabis to patients in the state of Florida, specifically. So that mission hasn’t changed,” Rivers told the News Service of Florida in a phone interview. Trulieve was one of the state’s first medical marijuana operators, launching after Florida lawmakers in 2014 approved non-euphoric cannabis for patients with severe epilepsy. The company blossomed after Florida voters in 2016 passed a constitutional amendment that broadly legalized medical marijuana. Harvest, which got its start in Florida as Gainesville-based San Felasco Nurseries, was also an early entrant in the state’s cannabis industry, receiving a license from the Florida Department of Health in 2016 as the state geared up for the anticipated passage of the constitutional amendment. With the acquisition of Harvest finalized, Trulieve will have 149 retail locations in 11 states including Florida, more than 3.1 million square feet of cultivation and just over 8,500 employees. Before the deal closed, Trulieve had 85 retail sites in Florida. “We’ll have approximately 37 percent more retail locations than the next closest competitor and 50 percent more, or a million square feet more, cultivation than the next closest competitor,” Rivers said of Trulieve’s national footprint. Because Florida law does not allow medical marijuana operators to hold more than one license, Harvest auctioned off its license to pave the way for its sale to Trulieve. Planet 13, which operates in Nevada and California, paid $55 million in cash for the Harvest license. Meanwhile, Harvest’s 14 retail locations in Florida will be closed tem-
porarily in October as they are converted to the Trulieve brand and Harvest employees undergo Trulieve training. “It will be the same faces when they go back. We’re keeping all of those folks on board,” Rivers said. Trulieve is establishing a “regional hub strategy” across the U.S., with hubs in Florida, Pennsylvania and Arizona, Rivers said, to be better positioned as more states approve medical marijuana and others legalize adult recreational use of marijuana. The regional focus should offset patient concerns about the “big boxing” of the marijuana business, according to Rivers. She also said Trulieve — which operates in states where recreational use of marijuana is legal as well as others where marijuana is restricted for medical use — has a 75 percent retention rate among customers. According to a news release issued Friday morning, Trulieve reported revenues of $215.1 million in the second quarter of 2021 and net income of $40.9 million, while Harvest reported revenues of $102 million. Combined, the companies — traded on the Canadian Stock Exchange — had the highest reported revenues among U.S. publicly reported cannabis companies, the release said. The marijuana industry has skyrocketed throughout the country over the past few years. But as other states move ahead with legalizing recreational marijuana for adults, such efforts in Florida have flailed. The Florida Supreme Court twice this year rejected proposed constitutional amendments aimed at allowing people to use recreational marijuana. In April, justices said the ballot summary of a proposal put forward by the committee Make It Legal Florida would mislead “voters into believing that the recreational use of marijuana in Florida will be free of any repercussions, criminal or otherwise.” The conclusion of it being misleading stemmed from marijuana remaining illegal under federal law. Supporters of recreational use have been pushing Congress to legalize marijuana, which would make it easier for states to authorize recreational use. But recreational use isn’t the only way for Trulieve and other marijuana companies to continue to expand. “I think it’s important to note that there are a lot of states surrounding the state of Florida that are just now onboarding medical programs. So we do think that there’s a significant runway ahead on the medical side,” Rivers said. “So, the landscape across the U.S. is going to continue to evolve … kind of regardless of what happens in D.C.” news@orlandoweekly.com
Orlando Magic power forward Jonathan Isaac was already a compelling story this season. His return from a terrible ACL injury last season made him a player to watch. Unfortunately, all of that has been overshadowed by his reluctance to take the coronavirus vaccine. Isaac railed against what he viewed as shoddy journalism during this week’s Magic media day after being included on a list of anti-vax NBA players put out by Rolling Stone. “I was pretty badly misrepresented,” Isaac said. “I appreciate [the journalists] who try their best to share the thoughts, ideas and the heart of the people they are asking questions of.” Isaac said that he has nothing but respect for healthcare workers, noting that his mother worked in healthcare. And he stressed that he’s happy the vaccine is available for those who want it. “I’m not anti-vax. I’m not anti-medicine. I’m not anti-science,” he said. “I didn’t come to my current vaccination status by studying black history or watching Donald Trump press conferences.” In spite of all that, Isaac is not sold on the vaccine. He admitted he has already contracted COVID-19 and trusts his own age, fitness and natural immunity to protect him from severe reactions. He also said he was worried about the rare chance that he might have an adverse reaction to the vaccine. “I’ve had COVID in the past,” he said. “Our understanding of antibodies, of natural immunity has changed a great deal from the onset of the pandemic and is still evolving.” —Alex Galbraith
¶ Orlando Mixtape returns with a ’90s benefit concert for youth literacy The Orlando Mixtape series of benefit concerts hasn’t been around long enough to remember the ’90s on its own, but that won’t stop the literacy-supporting charity gig from throwing back to the age of irony and alt-rock feeding frenzies. Orlando Mixtape: ’90s Edition will feature a night of ’90s hits played by Anti-Idol, a supergroup of sorts featuring members of Seven Mary Three and L.A. Guns. The eighth edition of the show will take place at Ace Cafe on Friday, Oct. 15, with 100 percent of ticket sales and donations going to the Page 15 literacy program. Across the years, the Mixtape has taken on everything from Skynyrd to Brit rock. The last version of the benefit threw a spin on the ’80s, pre-pandemic. Advance general admission tickets are just $15. VIP tickets that include a tumbler and admission to a pre-show event with themed cocktails start at $100. The event will also include a silent auction for vacations, tickets and art. Tickets are on sale now. The venue is encouraging attendees to wear a mask. —AG
¶ Florida approved for more than $1B in food stamps for kids After weeks of pressuring Gov. Ron DeSantis to apply for a onetime pandemic food-stamp program, this week Florida became the last state to apply and get approval for more than a billion dollars in Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer federal funding. The program was issued by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in April to aid those children that depend on the school meals distributed during the summer. More than 30 Democratic state lawmakers and 80 advocacy groups urged the governor to apply for the program. Nikki Fried, Florida agriculture commissioner, said it was shameful for the state to take so long to apply. “I don’t know if it was politically motivated, I don’t know if DCF dropped the ball, and then when we called them out on it, they had to come up with some excuse,” Fried asserted. “But regardless, at the end of the day, the money is coming down to our families across the state.” A spokesperson for the governor once said Floridians did not need the program because kids were back in school. The program is aimed at helping an estimated 2.7 million children in Florida. Families with children in poverty will receive an additional $375 in benefits over a 30-day period beginning Nov. 15. Fried said every penny counts for those who are food insecure. “$375 may not sound like a lot to some people, but for many Floridians, it will make all the difference in the world,” Fried contended. Children younger than age 6 who went to childcare and whose families already were enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can also apply for the added benefit. —Trimmel Gomes, Florida News Connection

Federal law says uninsured COVID patients should be treated for free. Why did Orlando Health tell CJ Vogl he owed $29,000? BY JEFFREY C. BILL M A N
W
hen CJ Vogl awoke at 2 a.m. in his Charleston, South Carolina, Airbnb with a strange feeling in his chest and stomach, he assumed his acid reflux was acting up. But then he threw up — and he kept throwing up, retching to the point of near delirium, he says. He tried to sleep off his worsening sickness, but when his girlfriend also began experiencing flu-like symptoms, they feared the worst. They’d both received their second Moderna vaccine a week or so earlier, says Vogl, 25. But that didn’t stave off the Delta variant tearing through Florida in mid-August, infecting more than 20,000 people a day. So on Sunday, Aug. 22, their weekend getaway ended with a painful sixhour drive home to Orlando. By Wednesday, Vogl was struggling to take deep breaths, and an over-the-counter pulse oximeter showed his blood-oxygen level at 87 percent, which is considered low. He checked into the Orlando Health’s Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he spent the next five nights. The care was excellent, he says. But Vogl, who doesn’t have health insurance, was worried about the bill. When his Orlando Health patient portal said he owed only $100, he called ORMC’s billing department to see if that was correct. “Oh, no,” he says he was told. “We’re still totaling everything up. Your cost of services is about $55,900.” Vogl was stunned, he says. He didn’t know then — he didn’t know until last week, when he was informed by Orlando Weekly — that under federal law, his cost of services was supposed to be $0. Two days after he mentioned the law in a phone call and email to Orlando Health’s billing department, Vogl’s patient obligation was erased, according to screenshots of his patient portal provided to Orlando Weekly. His story raises two important questions: Had Orlando Weekly not made Vogl aware of a federal law designed to help uninsured COVID patients, would the hospital have tried to collect what it said Vogl owed? And are other uninsured COVID patients unnecessarily struggling to pay Orlando Health bills, or bills from other hospitals? Orlando Health spokesperson Kena Lewis points out that Vogl was never sent an invoice requesting payment. She adds that it’s “highly unlikely” that a patient who is eligible for free COVID care could slip through the hospital system’s cracks. “Our experience with uninsured patients is that they are often unaware of coverage for which they may be eligible,” Lewis says. “That’s why we have teams of people to help them see what they might quality for.” In its response to the pandemic, Congress established a COVID-19 Uninsured Fund, which reimburses pro-
viders at Medicare rates for treating uninsured COVID victims at no cost to the patient. ORMC has received almost $5 million in reimbursements, federal records show. Orlando Health’s other facilities have been reimbursed more than $1.8 million. Lewis says that patients are “advised that they may be eligible” for free COVID care. But Vogl says no one told him. Hospital officials collected his information. They knew he was uninsured. The hospital then gave him a “self-pay” discount, which reduced his obligation from $55,923 to a hair under $29,000. On Sept. 2, he emailed Orlando Health to ask about financial assistance. Five days later, a representative emailed him a link, according to emails he provided to Orlando Weekly. As a nonprofit, Orlando Health — which in 2019 earned nearly $509 million in income against more than $2.7 billion in revenue, according to tax filings — is required to provide assistance to low-income patients. It writes off care for patients with household incomes at or below 225 percent of the federal poverty level — currently $28,980 for an individual or $59,625 for a family of four — which added up to more than $76 million in 2019, Lewis says. Between Vogl’s bartending gig at the Orlando beer bar Redlight Redlight and his full-time job at Aspire Health Partners, where he helps men with substanceabuse issues, Vogl believed he made too much to qualify. (Aspire offers its employees health insurance. Vogl took the job last November but didn’t complete the paperwork before his enrollment period ended, he says. He’ll become eligible to enroll again in October.) He applied for financial assistance but says he didn’t hear back. While Lewis says she can’t discuss specific patient information, she says Orlando Health only reviews applications for financial assistance after it evaluates eligibility for the COVID-19 program. That can sometimes take weeks, she adds. After physicians document the patient’s case, the hospital requests a patient ID from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, then submits a claim and waits for approval. Staring down a $29,000 bill he had no hope of paying, on Sept. 18, Vogl started a GoFundMe campaign. “I am so grateful that I went to Orlando Health when I did,” he wrote. “Otherwise, it’s entirely possible we aren’t even having this conversation right now. “However, the thing here is that I’m uninsured and thus am dealing with a medical bill that is currently impossible for me to pay even if I allow myself to go totally broke paying it.” To date, it has raised more than $3,100 from 64 donors. Orlando Weekly learned of the campaign on Sept. 22, contacted Vogl and told him about the COVID-19
Uninsured Fund. He called Orlando Health’s billing department and the person who answered seemed to have no idea what he was talking about, he says. Then he emailed the hospital’s patient advocate: “I was wanting to inquire into my options here. With the knowledge of [this fund], what could we go ahead and do?” He received an automated reply. Within 48 hours, however, Orlando Health had updated his bill. There was now a line called “Insurance Paid” totaling $39,247.62, with the “primary payer” listed as the COVID-19 Uninsured Fund. Vogl’s obligation was zeroed out. There’s no obligation for hospitals to inform patients about the fund — and some don’t, according to an investigation last year by Kaiser Health News and Nashville Public Radio. In some cases, emergency providers — who must treat everyone regardless of their ability to pay — did not want to take the legal risks associated with asking about patients’ insurance status. In others, there was simply a lack of awareness. Vogl’s GoFundMe campaign implicitly, and perhaps inadvertently, spread this misinformation: that people without insurance who go to the hospital for COVID treatment could end up with massive bills and crushing medical debt. The consequences of such misinformation can be deadly. Uninsured patients often avoid care so as to avoid bills they can’t pay. Research published by the consumer advocacy group FamiliesUSA linked 32 percent of COVID deaths nationally — and 48 percent in Florida — during the first eight months of the pandemic to gaps in health insurance coverage. Jeff Grainger, a spokesperson for the Altamonte Springs-based hospital system AdventHealth, says AdventHealth’s “financial folks meet with patients while they’re in the hospital if it’s feasible.” “We would let a patient know that we would submit a claim to [the COVID program] on their behalf, but that’s not able to be done until after they’re discharged, and of course there are no guarantees,” Grainger continues. “[If ] they don’t qualify under the [COVID] program, then our financial assistance policy is applied, leaving them no out-of-pocket expenses.” AdventHealth’s financial assistance policy covers only those making up to 200 percent of the federal poverty limit — in 2021, that’s $25,760 for an individual. A month after being hospitalized, Vogl says he’s getting back to normal. “I sweat a lot, even with small exertions,” he says. “I can’t take, like, a full, deep breath yet. I’m still getting there.”

xtreme abortion restrictions were allowed to become law in Texas without intervention from the Supreme Court, clearing the way for similar laws all around the country. Florida legislators have already put forward a similarly worded bill that would effectively outlaw abortion in the state. In light of this, local women joined in a nationwide protest, taking to the streets of downtown Orlando last weekend. See our photos from the rally and march at photos.orlandoweekly.com.

Come Out With Pride is back in person and on the town
KYLIE SONIQUE LOVE | PHOTO COURTESY OF COME OUT WITH PRIDE
Happy Pride, Orlando! After 2020 celebra-
tions were shifted mostly online, Orlando’s Come Out With Pride is back this weekend with a huge slate of in-person events, observances, celebrations and — yes — the blockbuster parade through downtown Orlando. This year’s theme is “Unified by Pride” in recognition of the vibrant diversity of Orlando’s LGBTQ+ community. On Saturday, Oct. 9, starting at noon and going until 9:30 p.m., Lake Eola Park will come alive with a big, festival-style celebratory event with a plethora of live entertainment spread over multiple stages. This year there will be two parades happening in observance of Pride this Saturday — so get some fresh air in solidarity! Orlando’s part of the National Trans Visibility March starts with a rally at 1 p.m. at the amphitheater in Lake Eola. Then the march starts at 2 p.m. and goes until 3:30 p.m. Then the traditional Come Out With Pride parade through downtown Orlando starts right afterward at 4 p.m. with celebrity grand marshals Blue Star, Brandon Wolf, Chelsea Wolfe (not the musician, but a badass trans BMX Freestyle athlete who is a Florida native), Felipe Sousa-Lazaballet and Tina GregoryPropst. They’ll be leading participants and floats on an expanded mile-long route through downtown. The festival in Lake Eola Park features two very big-name headliners from the glamorous and high-stakes world of RuPaul’s Drag Race: Gottmik and Kylie Sonique Love. Gottmik came to fame on Season 13 of Drag Race, both as the first trans man to compete on the program and for his bold, avant sense of style and aesthetic. Kylie Sonique Love, the crowned queen of Drag Race’s sixth season, was the first trans woman to ever win a U.S. season of Drag Race, and held court at muchmissed local landmark Parliament House more than a few times. Aside from the headliners, entertainment will be on offer from MrMs Adrien’s Gaga Ball, a few numbers from The Gay ’90s Musical, Moonshot Acapella, DJ Tracy Young and DJ Scott
Robert. There will also be a Pride Marketplace showcasing local goods, a SponsorWalk highlighting affiliated organizations and businesses, the Rainbow Ranch for the kiddies and even a sober space. The evening will be capped off by a fireworks show over Lake Eola at 9:15 p.m. Downtown bar Irish Shannon’s will be hosting the Amor official afterparty. Pride offshoot events this week include Les Vixens’ Diznee Burlesque Show (guess what that’s about!) going down at Southern Nights on Wednesday, Oct. 6. On Thursday, Oct. 7, the Orlando Gay Chorus presents “We Shall Overcome: Celebrate LGBT+ Diversity” at the Lake Eola bandshell, spotlighting “LGBT+ trailblazers of color” in song. Performances of The Gay ’90s Musical in its entirety happen at the Savoy on Oct. 7, 8 and 10, with a portion of the proceeds going to Come Out With Pride and the LGBT+ Center. The Jewish Federation of Greater Orlando will observe a Pride Shabbat at City Hall on Friday, Oct. 8, and later that night Watermark hosts Movies Out Loud, featuring a screening of Showgirls hosted by comedians Sabrina Ambra and Jeff Jones. (Should get raucous!) Even later that night — and most likely even more raucous — is Leather Pride Night at Savoy, kicking off at 9:30 p.m. For those interested in a different type of sports, there’s Pride Night with the Orlando Magic on Sunday, Oct. 10, at the Amway Center, with the Magic taking on the San Antonio Spurs. And don’t forget to cap off a very full weekend with the official Come Out With Pride brunch outdoors at the Dr. Phillips Center on Sunday, Oct. 10, at noon, featuring food, drinks and plenty of live entertainment. Organizers are asking that those interested in attending Come Out With Pride on Saturday RSVP through comeoutwithpride. org in advance, wear a mask at all events and get vaccinated. This is about thinking community-minded and looking out for one another. feedback@orlandoweekly.com

Orlando artist Crummy Gummy documents a colorful company of genderfluid youth BY JESSICA BRYCE YOU N G
M
auricio Murillo, known locally as Crummy Gummy, launched his Salad Days portrait series after he kept noticing a group of intriguing people at art exhibitions around Orlando. The subjects aren’t models, but “gallery kids,” Murillo says. “A small group of diverse young adults that contribute to Orlando, Florida’s unique culture. Every portrait session is the result of conversations with those individuals found at art shows.” Colombian-American artist Murillo was born and raised in Central Florida. “I’m an advocate for our ‘lost identity,’ particularly the lives and emotions of residents here in Orlando,” Murillo says. “Theme parks aside, there is … an oasis of creativity.”
Documenting one’s own social milieu and peers is a tradition as old as art, though staked out photographically most notably in contemporary art by Nan Goldin and Ryan McGinley. Murillo, though, rather than capturing his subjects in situ, turns up the theatricality with meticulously posed subjects against perfectly harmonizing backdrops. The final product has the sheen of commercial photography, but unlike a fashion editorial or an ad, these confections are a collaboration — Murillo creates the backdrops and sets to complement the looks created by his sitters, letting their aesthetic lead and functioning as a foil.
Although not every Salad Days subject firmly identifies as gay or lesbian, all of them fit in the “questioning” category. “Fluid sexuality, pride, race, gender and the constantly evolving cultural heritage we carry with us are a focus of the series,” Murillo says. Some are caught in an indeterminate state of seeking; some are quite determined as to who and what they are, even — or especially — if there’s no one else like them. Crummy Gummy’s work is currently on view at the Bower Museum in Santa Ana, California. His portraits have also been published in the British Journal of Photography’s annual Portrait of Humanity book.

BY SETH KUBERSKY
Nosferatu transports patrons across time and space in an immersive encounter with the undead So far this spooky season, I’ve experienced more than two dozen haunted houses and scare zones between Universal and SeaWorld’s Halloween events — not to mention facing down hordes of zombie clowns at Scream n’ Stream — and all that was before October had even begun. If you’re craving an All Hallows celebration, but you’re looking for something more sophisticated than jump scares, treat yourself to one of these eerily inventive theatrical experiences.
HORROR IN HEADPHONES
In recent years, I’ve followed Phoenix Tears Productions on innovative immersive journeys at the Fringe Festival, in cyberspace, and even (back at the start of the pandemic) inside a suburban garage. But last week’s media preview of Horror in Headphones — the latest audio-based adventure from producer-director Mallory Vance and writer Megan Markham — took me on the longest trip yet, all the way to Santa’s Christmas Tree Forest in Eustis. Brave souls who make the trek can embark on two different stories, both of which involve walking through the woods wearing wireless headsets as live actors pantomime to a slickly produced prerecorded soundtrack. In The Resurrection, I followed Gwen (Leanna Bailey, voiced by Callie Wills), whose hobbies include necromancy and eating spiders, on a pleasant flashlight-lit stroll through a sylvan glade that’s supposedly stalked by a serial killer. The tour starts out campy, as Gwen gushes about her non-living, nonbinary lover, then turns violently gory in the inevitable twist ending. Next, Camp Alkeridge took me on a brief hayride to a haunted summer camp, where counselor Grace (Megan Markham, voiced by Claire Hoeg) assures visitors that the legendary Alkemesh Monster is nothing to worry about … right up until the moment she’s eviscerated.
‘NOSFERATU’ | PHOTO COURTESY DONALD RUPE
Of the two shows (which are separately ticketed), I felt Camp Alkeridge was far stronger, thanks to the clever true-crime podcast that kicks it off and an interactive hide-and-seek moment in the middle. Both could use bigger blow-offs to end their twisted tales, and neither exploits the skin-crawling dimensional sound effects Phoenix Tears used to such great effect in last year’s Infected. I’m not certain either on their own are worth recommending the 45-plus minute drive from downtown Orlando. However, if you combine them both with the included petting zoo, pumpkin patch, and beer garden selling food and custom cocktails, Horror in Headphones offers a full evening’s entertainment that’s a tempting alternative to the theme park haunts. (through Oct. 30; phoenixtears productions.com)
NOSFERATU
It’s barely been a month since artistic director Donald Rupe’s Renaissance Theatre Company secured its new home (thanks in large part to a donation from co-founder Chris Kampmeier) in the former Orlando Ballet rehearsal hall near Loch Haven Park. But you’d be forgiven for thinking they’d been building out the venue for years, based on the richly textured environments their all-star roster of designers have wrought for Nosferatu. From the deck of a storm-lashed 18th-century sailing ship to a 1990s-era underground strip club to a moonlit clearing with towering trees, Nosferatu transports its patrons across time and space for an immersive encounter with the undead, featuring some of the bestexecuted aesthetics I’ve seen in many an October. Rupe has crafted an original centuryspanning mythology for Nosferatu that
nods at F.W. Murnau’s 1922 film of the same name — along with Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, as well as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Twilight and The Lost Boys — while introducing a mesmerizing new monster in the form of David Lee’s Max, a vampire king who communicates with echolocation clicks when he isn’t belting power ballads. Max’s Renfield-esque minion (Blake Aburn) incants menacing exposition between bouts of maniacal laughter, but the loose storyline is largely moved forward by choreographer Kathleen Wessel’s hypnotic fusion of athletic contemporary steps with modern pedestrian and gestural movements, electrifyingly performed by associate choreographer Adonus Mabry and an uncannily committed cast. I was thrilled right from the start by the bold theatricality of the opening oceanbound act, and blown away when previously hidden doors opened to usher us into the neon-soaked Club V (complete with a full liquor bar serving cocktails throughout the performance) for the second. But it was the third portion of the evening, when patrons were unleashed to explore various rooms throughout the building and discover different vampiric vignettes, that cemented Nosferatu’s spot on my list of favorite theatrical frights. Only the grand finale left an unpleasant taste in my mouth; the ending’s blood-drenched orgy is aiming for transgressive eroticism, but watching Calvin Klein-clad performers writhing in what looks like strawberry Nesquik was instead unintentionally comedic. That closing misstep aside, Nosferatu’s chilling heights have me hungrily looking forward to devouring whatever Renaissance Theatre Company might unleash on Orlando next. SQUARE MEAL

Buttercrust Pizza raises crusts and buzz with its crispyedged, Detroit-style pies BY FAIYAZ KARA
S
o, a Connecticut girl opens a pizza joint in Orlando and, hold up, it doesn’t serve New Haven-style pizza?! No clam pie?! Sacrilege! cry the Nutmeggers! Profanation! yowl the Yalies! Indeed, Brianna Feldman forsook the coalfired, thin-crust, Neapolitan-like oblongs of her home state in favor of a pie that’s very much its opposite — grandma-style pizza. That’s a pie baked in an oil-lined square pan resulting in crispy edges, like the one made famous by Prince Street Pizza in New York City. Only Buttercrust’s pies aren’t technically grandma pies. They’re a lot more like Detroit-style squares, with their thick and spongy focaccia-like crusts crisped around the edges. When I popped by a couple of months back and picked up a Kickin’ Hawaiian ($21.95) and a pepperoni pie ($18.95), the sweet chili pineapple indeed kicked, and I liked how the pepperoni cupped into little grease traps. What I wasn’t very much impressed by was the less-than-airy crust. It’s what makes a Motor City pie worth motoring for, after all. But studying the profile of the square slice from the comfort of my car proved dispiriting. Also deflating, at least for cold pizza lovers, is that the pizza is darned near
inedible the following day. But the same could be said for any Detroit-style pizza. I ordered a pie from Motown institution Jet’s Pizza in Apopka and, while it was an absolute score the day of, it too was a day-after failure cold. Granted, both squares revivify quite nicely if thrown into a toaster oven for a few minutes. Fast-forward a couple of months and I’m back at Buttercrust with some pizza enthusiast comrades. We get a another “Kickin’ Hawaiian” along with a “Plantlover” ($21.95) and the “Triple Mac & Cheesiest” ($16.95). Because there’s no place to eat it inside, we kinda snuck our boxes onto the patio of Gatlin Hall Brewery and ate the pizza on

one of their picnic tables. And, yes, we got beers from the brewery — we’re not complete wankers. In fact, Gatlin’s Sun Glitch hefeweizen went great with pizza, which happened to be a whole lot better than that first go-around. The crust, thick, soft and cushioned by air pockets, held the toppings nicely — ham, bacon and sweet chili pineapple, in the case of the “Kickin’ Hawaiian.” The addition of jalapeños turned the kick into a proper punt. If you find the prices to be a kick to your wallet, just know that the slabs here are substantially filling — none more so than the top-heavy “Plantlover,” with its green peppers, mushrooms, onions, olives, spinach and roasted red peppers. It’s finished with a basil pesto swirl and resembles some sort of edible Jackson Pollock painting. “This is more an open-faced sandwich than pizza,” observed one of my dining comrades. It’s not one you’d find at any roadside diner, however. For all the hype surrounding the square buttercrust pie, a traditional, less poofy, round pizza is also offered. But it can also get pretty hefty. The “Triple Mac & Cheesiest” only comes as a round pie option, because a sturdier crust is needed to hold the weighty topping. Honestly, we all found the mac and cheese to stand on its own — the crust is hardly needed. FWIW, Jet’s Pizza also offers a butter crust option, in addition to seven other crust flavors, but you won’t find spinachartichoke pinwheels there ($8.95). These doughy numbers at Buttercrust are as fat as biscuits and, dare I say, better than garlic knots. They’re the perfect game-day snack, too. A pepperoni version ($9.95) is also offered, as are mozz-stuffed “Cheese Bombs” and zeppole-like Parmesan bread bites. But let’s face it, if you’re ordering from Buttercrust, it’s the crispy-edged square pizza you’re looking for. After all, it is their bread and butter.

Muppets Haunted Mansion debuts on Disney+ Friday
ON (small) SCREENS IN ORLANDO
Streaming premieres you won’t want to miss by Steve Schneider PREMIERES WEDNESDAY, OCT. 6: Among the Stars — In an effort to reclaim space exploration from billionaire dilettantes, NASA presents a documentary series about good old-fashioned publicly funded astronauts who have to perform a critical repair to the International Space Station. Yeah, but can they build a rocket that looks like my junk? (Disney+) Bad Sport — Hear some truly shocking stories in a docuseries that explores the intersection of professional athletics and crime. I’d pass a remark about that particular Venn diagram being a circle, but Ray Lewis might stab me to death. (Netflix) Baking Impossible — The twist to this competition show is that each baker is teamed with an engineer to make sure their sweet creation has amazing structural integrity. Hey, Choo Choo Charlie was an engineer; could somebody win with just a box of Good and Plenty? (Netflix) V/H/S 94 — The latest in this series of found-footage horror flicks ventures into the compound of an ill-fated cult who have all been found dead in front of their TVs. You know, just like you thought was going to happen to you when you watched Malignant. (Shudder)
PREMIERES THURSDAY, OCT. 7: 15 Minutes of Shame — Learn the sad truth about public bullying in a documentary co-produced by Monica Lewinsky — who paradoxically can’t go 15 minutes without complaining that the public just won’t leave her alone. (HBO Max)
Craftopia — Here comes a second season of the crafting show where the participants are all between the ages of 9 and 15. Speaking of which, you know why Matt Gaetz likes 29-year-olds? Because there’s 20 of ’em! (OK, that joke worked better when it was about Michael Jackson, and it doesn’t really make sense when it’s written out instead of spoken. But what do you want me to do, just not mention the guy for an entire week?) (HBO Max) One of Us Is Lying — The novel of the same name becomes a series about four teens in detention who are all suspects in the murder of a fifth. If this had happened to The Breakfast Club, that Ally Sheedy would have gone to juvie without so much as a trial. (Peacock) Sexy Beasts — Lonely singles try to hook up from behind elaborate prosthetics in a second season of the dating show that was roundly lambasted as dull when it premiered last summer. But you were newly vaccinated then, and the world momentarily seemed rife with the potential for excitement. So happy bingeing, Spinster Sue! (Netflix)
PREMIERES FRIDAY, OCT. 8: Joe Bob’s Halloween Hoedown — The films in this year’s double feature remain a closely guarded secret, but Joe Bob promises appearances by experts in the field of carving. I assume that means pumpkins, although the ghosts of the Medellín cartel would be a hell of a get. (Shudder) Madonna: Madame X — Speaking of
“Medellín,” expect to hear that and other hits as Madge struts her stuff in a concert film shot in her adopted home of Lisbon. Thirty years since Truth or Dare and Warren, and she finally admits she’s a Lisbonian? (Paramount+) Muppets Haunted Mansion — No, I don’t expect it to be good — if you mean “good” in the sense of “genuinely funny.” What I am anticipating is plenty of thoughtful fan service via a clever mash-up of two of the only things in this world that actually make me want to go on living. In other words, if you want shade here, go wake up Rex Reed. (Disney+) Pretty Smart — Emily Osment plays a would-be novelist who moves in with her ditzy sister, a shirtless hunk, a healer and a social-media influencer in the latest sitcom to make you wish the world was made up entirely of Black people. (Netflix)
PREMIERES TUESDAY, OCT. 12: Bright: Samurai Soul — Ancient Japan is the setting for an anime spinoff from the 2017 live-action flick Bright, in which a cop played by Will Smith partnered with an orc to protect an elf girl with a magic wand. Honestly, that was a real thing that happened. (Netflix) Convergence: Courage in a Crisis — Documentary cameras follow nine people who rose to the challenge of the pandemic by becoming passionate advocates for humanity. Meanwhile, Netflix would be happy if the rest of you just kept watching Netflix. (Netflix) orlandoweekly.com

LOCAL RELEASES
Dot Org, the vehicle for local musician Ian Mckewen, has always been a stylistically restless indie act with little regard for simple categorization or convention. But the one unifying element in all of the heady brew is Mckewen’s theatrical singing, and it’s this act’s most defining trait. Well, Dot Org’s brand-new single, “Neon Oceans,” is one of Mckewen’s most distilled songs to date and provides some of the best framing for his exceptionally limber vocals yet. Dynamic caprice and tension are Dot Org’s usual modus operandi. But the vibe-rich “Neon Oceans” is a song of fluid summery reverie. It occasionally threatens to get carried away in a sudden updraft but just settles back into its lovely zephyr drift. It’s on this frequency and in this open space that Mckewen’s singing and songwriting exhale gorgeously like never before. “Neon Oceans” is a finely crafted and lushly executed diamond in the Dot Org catalog. This first glimpse of Dot Org’s next fulllength album — which is due for release on Oct. 31 — is up now on Bandcamp. Orlando’s Drex Carter, one of the voices in the upward Seeyousoon rap crew, recently dropped tight new single “idk.” It’s a tender, plaintive emo-rap number that rides a very now wave. But while the song itself is low key, its video — done by Florida’s Gameonet Productions — is high in both concept and production value. Filmed across four years and featuring lots of simulated realities, it’s a splashy journey of sci-fi flair. Check it out on YouTube.

ORLANDO WEEKLY ● OCT. 6-12, 2021 ● orlandoweekly.com
“QUICKIES” I’m a cis woman. I had a quasi-relationship with a man last year that only lasted a couple of months. The sex was great, and sexting was always a big part of our connection. Since the breakup, we’ve fluctuated between staying in touch and radio silence, sometimes going months without speaking. During our periods of contact, though, sexting always makes a comeback. It’s hot until the frustration of not actually being able to have sex with him sets in. (We live in different countries now.) My issue is, if it weren’t for the sexting (which he really pushes), I don’t think he would converse with me about life in general. And there are other ways I feel this dynamic is detrimental to my post-breakup life. For example, he is really into cuckolding. He wants to hear about the dates I go on, the other men I have sex with, how they fucked me, etc. It’s fun to tease him and make him jealous by texting him, especially while I’m out with other men, but I wind up feeling like my attention is divided between him and whoever I’m with, sometimes to a point where I can’t come with others because of how distracted I am (by him) and how disconnected I feel (from them). My Ex’s Sexy Sexts Are Getting Exhausting, Sorta If you feel like your ex is just using you for sexts and you don’t enjoy being used like that, MESSAGES, stop sexting with your ex. Even if you never hear from him again, that could be for the best. I mean, if you have a hard time resisting his sext requests and sexting with him leaves you feeling frustrated (because you can’t fuck him) and prevents you from being in the moment (with the guys you are fucking), you should probably block his number. But if you enjoy sexting with your ex and you can reset your expectations to avoid disappointment (stop expecting more from him than just sexts), go ahead and sext with him. But don’t do it when you’re with someone else. Go out on dates, enjoy your dates, fuck your dates. And the next time you’re home alone and bored, MESSAGES, text your ex and tell him you’re out on a date. You’ll get all the same enjoyment out of making him jealous — and he’ll get enjoyment from his cuckold fantasies — without you being distracted during your actual dates. After many years of a fulfilling sex life, I’ve begun to embrace the perv side of my sexuality and couldn’t be happier! But I’m looking for a better term than “perv.” While accurate, that term seems to carry negative connotations. I’m looking for something that communicates the same thing while being sex-positive. Any suggestions? Positively Exploring Rhetorical Variety
I’ve always liked “perv,” an affectionate diminutive for “pervert,” and I consider it sex positive in the same spirit that “slut,” having been reclaimed, is considered sex-positive by people who cheerfully and defiantly selfidentify as sluts. And since pretty much any word that communicates the same thing “perv” does in one catchy/percussive syllable has similarly negative connotations — deev for deviant, dej for degenerate, debbies for debauchers/debauchees — this perv thinks you should embrace the term “perv,” PERV. You’ve said that one way to get over a crush is to masturbate about it until it passes. I’m going on 2.5 years. I had surgery in 2019, and I’m still obsessed with my surgeon. I think it’s trauma bonding, as I had complications and had to have three follow-up surgeries, plus a ton of office visits. I know logically that he’s arrogant, overly impressed with his own sense of humor, and just generally not my type. I haven’t seen him in a year, but I still think about him all the time. Can you help? Can’t Understand This If masturbating about your arrogant, unfunny, and perhaps incompetent surgeon (three follow-up surgeries?!?) hasn’t done the trick … maybe it’s time to try masturbating about something and/or someone else? Or, even better, maybe talk with a therapist about this? You recently told a healthy and active 72-year-old man practicing orgasm denial that “multiple studies have shown a link between frequent ejaculation and a lower incidence of prostate cancer.” I’m a healthy and active 78-year-old man who began masturbating at age 10. I continue to masturbate as frequently as my body will allow, which is about every other day. Yet, I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent a procedure that reamed out most of my prostate tissue. I am now back to masturbating, but not ejaculating. Still, a dry orgasm is better than no orgasm at all. So, studies may show one thing, but life can show you something completely different. Totally Wrong About That I’m sorry to hear about your prostate tissues, TWAT, and I’m glad to hear you’re able to enjoy the orgasms you’re still capable of having. But I gotta say — for the record — that I didn’t claim frequent ejaculation prevents prostate cancer. I cited studies showing a lower incidence of prostate cancer in men who masturbate regularly. “Lower incidence” ≠ “zero incidence.” You drew the short straw here, TWAT, and I’m sorry about that. But I can’t imagine you spent all those
years masturbating solely for your prostate’s sake, TWAT, which means you still got something out of all those wet orgasms. It’s the same thing you’re getting out of the dry orgasms you’re enjoying now: pleasure. After reading the question asked by “The System Called Reciprocity,” the lesbian who wanted a man to do chores around the house in exchange for a handjobs or blowjobs, I had to write in. I’m not sure where she’s located, but if she’s on the south side of Chicago, I would be down for some light housework! Helping Out The Dykes And Making Nice I don’t know where TSCR lives either, HOTDAMN, but even if I knew where she was, I’m not allowed to put my readers in touch with each other. (My lawyer has forbidden me to play matchmaker.) That said, HOTDAMN, there’s nothing I can do to prevent my readers from reaching out to each other in the comments.
Meet Davey! Davey (A453031) is an 8-yearold neutered male brought to our shelter as a stray. He is a very sweet boy who has been searching for his forever family for over 124 days. Davey is especially happy when he is playing fetch in our interaction yard. He enjoys chasing toys and belly rubs, and is very treat-motivated. Davey is a virtual adoption candidate and available for in-person adoptions as well.
So long as ALPHA — the straight guy who likes to demean and degrade thicc gay boys he finds on Grindr — is upfront with these guys and tells them he’s straight and tells them he has no intention of ever hooking up with them IRL, then what he’s doing is OK, I guess. But if he’s not disclosing all those facts about himself, Dan, then he’s pretending to be something he’s not and that is not OK! Straight guys leading gay guys on for attention is repulsive. We’ve got enough problems out there without you giving straight guys permission to fuck with our heads! Too Pissed For Acronyms
During the month of October, adoption fees will be the standard $55 for dogs and $40 for cats. Adopters can receive additional Trick-or-Treat discounts from the front desk at our “Pumpkin Patch,” where they can find discounts of $5, $10, $15, $20 or a box of pet treats. All pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped prior to leaving with their new families.
Grindr and other hookup apps are full of guys leading each other on — sometimes intentionally (not interested in hooking up IRL), sometimes unintentionally (circumstances can derail a wanted hookup). Everyone who gets on Grindr knows or soon realizes that not every chat or pic exchange leads to sex. Like author and Grindr user Alexander Cheves said in that column: “We all enter Grindr chats willingly, and we should do so knowing that anyone we talk to may have no plans of following through with their promises to meet.” And in ALPHA’s case, I don’t think he’s leading anyone on. He seeks out gay guys who fantasize about masculine, domineering, unavailable straight jocks. He may be fucking with some guys’ heads, but he’s only fucking with the heads of guys who get off on having their heads fucked with in exactly this way, by exactly his type. I mean, who better to fulfill the hot unavailable straight jock fantasy than a hot unavailable straight jock?
