IN MEMORIAM: THE ORLANDO 49 Every week between now and the one-year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shootings, Orlando Weekly will profile a person killed on June 12, 2016. This week: Yilmary Rodriguez Solivan

The last photo of Yilmary Rodriguez Solivan shows a young woman smiling so hard inside the gay nightclub Pulse that her eyes crinkled at the corners.

Known to most as Mary, Rodriguez Solivan was married to racecar driver Juan Borges and the mother of two young boys, including a 3-month-old son. Before moving to Kissimmee, the 24-year-old lived in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Rodriguez Solivan has always been known for her smile, according to her sister Natalia Canlan.

“Mary was an amazing daughter and an extraordinary sister,” Canlan wrote on a

GoFundMe fundraiser for her sister’s husband and sons. “She was the most loving and caring person you could ever meet; her smile lit up the room and her laughter brought a smile to your heart!”

Rodriguez Solivan was showing off her smile the night of June 12 at Pulse along with her brother-in-law William Sabad Borges and a friend, Jonathan Camuy Vega. During the mass shooting, Camuy Vega tried to protect Rodriguez Solivan from the bullets. Both ultimately perished in the attack.

“Thank you all for your prayers,” Borges wrote on June 12. “But with the pain deeper than I’ve felt in my 28 years, with the heart ripped to shreds and with the anger that I never thought I’d feel I inform you that my sister-in-law, the person who will always be the sister that life gave me, the woman that gave life to the most important beings in my life and of my family, my two beautiful nephews, is one of the lives that were lost in the massacre.”

Borges says his friend Camuy Vega “died as a hero” trying to protect his sister-in-law.

“I love you both from here to the sky, where I know you are resting,” Borges wrote. “I swear that my heart has a huge ladder tall enough to get to you. UNLIKELY HERO Jim Obergefell never wanted to be the face of the gay rights movement. Now his name will go down in civil rights history

Five years ago, Jim Obergefell

remained the lead plaintiff; the case was couldn’t have imagined how his life would styled Obergefell v. Hodges.

equality for the LBGTQ community. So, it just makes me laugh when I think about law students having to learn how to pronounce and spell Obergefell.

Civil Rights Act to include gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, that one accomplishment would have the most wide-ranging impact.

It’s hard to remember that this Supreme Court decision only came out, what, 14 months ago? This was a fight that a lot of folks thought would take decades and decades to win, and now it’s over.

John and I never thought we would marry. I mean, we never thought we would have that ability, and look where we are now.

You come across in the book as being a low-key guy. Now you’re a spokesman for the cause.

I know. I absolutely never wanted to be someone people would recognize and stop on the street. [But] I don’t mind it one bit, because people stop me because they want to tell me a story. Every time it happens, it’s a gift. It’s a thank-you for being willing to fight and being willing to fight for John, fight for marriage, fight for people across the country. So, yeah, I never ever wanted to be in a position like that, but I did it because I loved John. I’m more than happy to give up some of my anonymity to lead a different life, because I know what I was part of has had such a great positive impact on people across the country.

This year, we’ve seen trans issues take center stage, in North Carolina and elsewhere. [Editor’s note: After this interview was conducted, the ACC pulled its football championship out of Charlotte in protest of North Carolina’s so-called “bathroom bill” and relocated it to Orlando.] Why do you think that is? I have a sense that some people needed to find a new target after they lost the marriage issue.

That’s exactly what I think. They realize that they have been losing and continue to lose even more and more, in terms of the acceptance and attitudes toward the LGB part of our community.

You know, more and more cities are passing antidiscrimination policies. States are.

And they realized they were losing. And it scares them. And they have now, they decided to, then, target the most vulnerable community.

What are the next steps for the gay rights movement, having secured marriage equality?

I think the fight for us now is to work toward getting nondiscrimination policies at the local level, state and the federal level. You know, if we could get the Equality Act to pass and update the 1964

That’s how society changes, when people develop empathy for groups they may not have been familiar with.

You know, it also surprises people when I say that, over the entire two years from the time we got married until the Supreme Court decision, I got four pieces of mail that were less than supportive. That’s it.

And people seem surprised by that, but I realized, almost from the start, that our story – everyone loves someone. Everyone loses someone they love. So it was this universal experience that every person can relate to, and I think that helps. Not everyone knows someone in the LGBTQ community. urreal. That’s how it still feels, 115 days after the worst morning in Orlando. There were gunshots, screams, running, pickup trucks at the hospital. First 20 dead, then 49 dead. Gasps, more screams, bullet casings, 49 names coming in one by one. Our city called the site of the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history. Blood bank lines, national media trucks, white crosses, politicians, Anderson Cooper. Love is love is love is love. Tears, candles, vigils and rainbows everywhere.

And then it was quiet. Orlando grieved, shed new tears, held more vigils, sang tributes, painted murals, turned anguish into artwork, repented for past hate, helped families, watched survivors walk again, learned to laugh, hugged their loved ones and remembered the 49.

Almost four months after a gunman walked into the gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando on Latin Night and started a massacre that ended with 49 people dead and countless others injured, the City Beautiful is healing, molding itself into a different place than it was before June 12. And in spite of the ache, the LGBTQ+ community and its allies are ready to turn out in numbers – an estimated 150,000 – at the Come Out With Pride Orlando parade Saturday, Oct. 8. For some, it might be hard to find joy amid the continued sorrow, but for Pulse employees and leaders of the local LGBTQ+ community that Orlando Weekly talked to, the Pride parade is an opportunity to keep honoring the legacy of those we lost, remember the struggle, celebrate our differences, and in the words of our local LGBT publication Watermark, say, “You cannot silence us. You cannot destroy us. We are not going anywhere.”

everything that’s going on in the world, it can sometimes feel like Pulse is being forgotten.

“I think it’s present for the gay community, but there’s so much that’s going on these days that sometimes, it gets lost for everybody else,” she says.

“Thank God people are still thinking about us and praying for us and helping us where they can.”

Moving forward, the majority of the group agrees they want to see gun laws changed.

“This should never happen again,” Sanchez says. “I believe everybody still has the right to bear arms. The Second Amendment is what it is, but it needs to be updated. At the same time, there’s no need for someone to come in the place with that type of assault rifle. That’s just not right.”

Poma says she plans to open a new Pulse and wants to bring her family together on a more regular basis instead of meeting at restaurants. She hopes corporate sponsors who came on board for Pride this year will continue to join and that the festival will grow.

“Pride has grown tremendously, not just in the size of the floats but in the size of the crowd,” she says. “We’ve watched how Orlando has become a more accepting place to live, and to be gay, and to be whoever you identify as. What happened here should never be forgotten, and I hope next year we’ll have a bigger crowd and continue on our journey.”

For Watermark editor-in-chief Billy Manes, Pride is as much celebration as it is protest, which can be a difficult balancing act.

“It’s not easy to mitigate tragedy with celebration,” he says. “But in a strange way, this might be the strongest and most important Pride Orlando has ever seen. The world threw Pride for us all summer, and now it’s our turn.”

Manes, alumnus of Orlando Weekly, was one of the first voices in Orlando to communicate to the national media the sentiments of the local LGBTQ community.

Since then, he’s helped launch the Pride Fund to End Gun Violence, a political action committee that focuses on electing pro-LGBTQ candidates who will promote gun reform, such as banning military-style weapons and limiting high-capacity magazines. Manes says Pride Fund and Gays Against Guns, an organization that advocates for stricter gun control, will be at the parade this weekend.

“I wrote a piece, a monologue of how I felt the other day, and it was effectively ‘Fuck guns,’” he says. “It still makes me angry.”

Manes draws from his own experiences. His partner, Alan Jordan, committed suicide with a gun in 2012, and his death was followed by an extended legal ordeal. He acutely understands the trauma that comes from losing a loved one to gun violence and says he understands people who are still mourning and can’t find it in themselves to celebrate Pride. For Manes, it’s a moment to take a stand, not only for the 49 victims killed at Pulse, but for the 33,000 Americans who die from gun violence every year and for the continuing struggle for equal rights in the LGBTQ community.

“I wish I could say it’s all rainbows and roses, everything is better and we’ve pulled ourselves back together,” he says. “But you can still get called ‘faggot’ when you walk down the street, and we have a record number of murders of transgender people. It certainly has brought us more allies, and it’s a good year to have motivated allies for things like LGBT workplace rights and gun reform. Pulse made people in Orlando, for whatever rare time, have to pay attention.”

Barbara Poma says it’s still hard to process what happened, but she finds herself glowing when she sees her Pulse employees together. Poma, one of the owners of the gay nightclub, tries to meet regularly with the familial group, though it has been hard to find a meeting space now that the club itself is off-limits.

“We are happier when we’re together,” she says.

“You see a lot of smiles those days, even from me. As far as coping and healing, we are all still at different stages with that and some of us still need to get help.

We’re all just in different spaces.”

Poma opened the club in honor of her brother, John, who died of AIDS in 1991. The name “Pulse” is a reference to her brother’s heartbeat and the way he continued to inspire his family and friends. Since the tragedy on June 12, Poma has indicated that she wishes to create a memorial at the site. Some of her employees had to find other jobs to supplement their income or apply for help with the OnePulse Foundation.

Poma says she and her employees, whom she calls her family, have a range of emotions about the Pride parade.

“We’re excited to be together, we’re excited to celebrate life, and that’s how we’re choosing to look at this,” she says. “It’s a celebration of those who survived and a celebration of those who passed on. We honor them and their families that day. But it is hard to be excited, and we’re definitely in a different place this year. We’re going to focus on being advocates for love, acceptance and equal rights for the LGBTQ community.”

A group of about 25 Pulse employees agreed with Poma, saying they were looking forward to Pride and to seeing the rest of the community come out to support them.

“I think it’s going to be bigger then ever and better than ever,” says bartender Kate Maini. “It’s going to be amazing.”

Years later, Sheehan, the first openly gay elected official in Central Florida, has seen Pride parades grow and laws discriminating against LGBTQ people overturned. She’s comforted a city during its most horrible days. Four months later, Sheehan says she’s still trying to heal and has become a fierce advocate for gun control reforms.

she says. “I still have some insomnia, and sometimes I get triggered by the pain that all these wonderful people are still feeling from the loss of their family members or from their injuries. Just because you weren’t in the club doesn’t mean it won’t affect you.”

Still, she’s excited about Pride and the opportunity it brings to have some joy again. Back when Pride was a smaller affair, Sheehan says she remembers rolling a pink garbage can down Orange Avenue for people to throw money into to pay for the parade.

“At Pride, we want to see everyone coming together,” she says. “There’s going to be no fear, and hopefully no violent people will come to try to disrupt it, though we are going to have very good security. This is a community celebration.”

Sheehan says since Pulse, she’s seen a change in local religious leaders and conservative officials who have since embraced the LGBTQ community.

“Part of me was sad that it took that to make this happen,” she says. “When something horrible happens and people have a change of heart, then you know their lives weren’t in vain. As horrible as it was that they died and their families will never be able to replace these wonderful, young successful people, they changed hearts.”

Sheehan says she’s heard some people ask when the community is going to be over what happened on June 12.

“We’re never going to be over it,” she says. “It’s changed us as a city. We’re going to keep talking about how these young people were lost to discrimination, homophobia and hatred. I will never forget their faces; I will never forget their families. There’s a hole in their hearts that will never go away, and we have to be there for them and survivors.

“There’s some things you can’t fix, but you can always try to ease their pain, empathize with them and help as much as possible.”

Terry DeCarlo says his most recent form of therapy has been a 10-minute Will & Grace cast reunion video about the 2016 election. He’s watched it eight times since it first went live in September, and the laughter helps keep him OK in the months after the Pulse tragedy.

“When I’m in a funk, like today, I watched it twice,” he says. “Comedy is truly the best medicine.”

DeCarlo, executive director of the GLBT Center of Central Florida, was one of the first advocates on the scene the morning of June 12. As the days passed, DeCarlo made the Center a safe haven for the community and a place where families and survivors could find help. Before Pulse happened, DeCarlo accepted a job in Miami as the Southeastern regional director for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. He was supposed to leave June 24.

“I got so entrenched, so involved with families, with recovery at the Center, that my heart wouldn’t let me go,” he says. “If I left, I would always be wondering what was happening in Orlando and wanting to be up here to help.”

DeCarlo says the city is starting to heal and Pride should help in that respect. The Center is currently raising funds to continue mental health treatment for people affected by the tragedy.

“It’s going to a celebration of life, a celebration of the city that is coming back slowly, and of the souls that we lost and for our survivors,” he says. “It’ll be a good feeling. The

“A couple weeks ago, I had surgery on my back again,” he says. “When I walk long distances, it still hurts. But just keeping positive all the time has helped me out.”

Marrero was at Pulse in the early-morning hours of June 12 with his best friend, Luis Vielma, for a night of dancing and fun. Vielma did not make it out of the club, and was one of the 49 people who died. After he was released from the hospital, Marrero appeared on MTV’s True Life: We Are Orlando episode, which detailed his recovery. Later, he appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where he got to meet his hero, Katy Perry. Marrero says it’s been difficult not being able to go back to his regular routine. Before the tragedy, he had two jobs; now, he stays home a lot. Still, the support from his boyfriend and well-wishers online has kept him moving forward.

“It’s been tough, but like I say, keeping a positive attitude helps,” he says. “The amount of love I’ve received has been amazing and I thank everybody for that. It was a horrible tragedy, but what I’m trying to do now is make a movement happen with #BeTheLight. I lost my best friend, but I’m going to live for him and the ones who didn’t make it.”

Marrero says the upcoming Pride parade will be emotional for him, but also beautiful. After Pulse happened, he says he felt like Orlando formed a wall protecting the LGBTQ community from harm. People hurt by the event were taking care of them, like babies, Marrero says.

“As long as we always remember those who passed away, there shouldn’t be any issue,” he says. “We should focus on how we’re going to make them happy by living for them in a positive way. We don’t have to wait for a tragedy to hit for the community to be united. We’re still here.

We’re rising together. We’re not going to give up.”

QLatinx, a new community group for Central Florida’s LGBT Latinos and Latinas, fills a need after Pulse

A

s the national media covered Pulse, most of them acknowledged the massacre had taken place in a gay nightclub on Latin night.

But few recognized that Latin night at Pulse was not only a night to party – it was a safe space for queer and trans people of color to be themselves and dance to J Balvin and Romeo Santos on the same night. Although the 49 victims of the mass shooting were from different races and sexual identities, they were overwhelmingly composed of queer Latinxs.

(Pronounced “la-teen-ex,” Latinx is an all-inclusive, gender-neutral alternative to the more restrictive terms Latino or Latina.) Nearly half of them were Puerto Rican, but there were also Mexicans, Dominicans, Cubans and some undocumented people.

Living in the intersection of both the LGBTQ community and the Latinx community comes with its own set of unique challenges. Some of the governmental agencies and institutional LGBTQ organizations who responded to the tragedy weren’t equipped to handle services in a language other than English, says Christopher Cuevas, a co-founder of QLatinx. These organizations also had a hard time understanding the different needs a Mexican immigrant might have from a Nuyorican from the Bronx.

This need for an understanding space ultimately led to the birth of QLatinx, a grass-roots community organization that focuses on helping queer and trans Latinxs.

“We had people in our community who need to be with one another to support each other,” says Cuevas. “We needed to be there to talk about grief, to talk about pain and be there in a way no one has been able to be there for us.”

QLatinx has since met on a weekly basis to talk about issues like the coming-out experience, immigration rights, access to affordable housing and health

care, and building connections to the predominantly Latinx communities outside Orlando that were also affected by the massacre, such as Kissimmee.

Many of the meetings also focus on healing, such as when the group joined with visual artist and University of Central Florida professor Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz to create 49 calaveras, also known as sugar skulls, for an installation at the Chicago National Museum of Mexican Art’s Dia de los Muertos exhibition.

“We’re still mending our broken hearts and souls,” Cuevas says. “But in this space, we feel safe, we feel connected, and we can turn to one another in times of crisis because we’re struggling in the same way.”

Marco Antonio Quiroga says after Pulse, the Our Fund Foundation, which supports the LGBTQ community, created the Contigo Fund to support grass-roots efforts that advance the causes of LGBTQ Latinx people, such as QLatinx. Quiroga, who is the program director for the fund, says more than $1 million is being held by the Contigo Fund for local organizations.

“The support that’s coming from the community for victims’ families and survivors is critical, but there is a window for that,” he says. “But there is an opportunity for folks to contribute and create lasting change by contributing to efforts that address the long–term needs of the community. Historically, the LGBTQ Latinx community, and even just the Latinx community, has not been in positions of power locally. We want to make sure the community feels empowered and that they have a voice for themselves.”

unique look documented in several books.

Restricting himself to a square format and black-and-white film, Ballen is the king of closed spaces.

“I think of the mind as a house of secrets and buried narratives,” Ballen says. His exploration of humanity is not dissimilar to Samuel Beckett’s – a comparison that the artist encourages – in its sparely staged exploration of mental health and modern society.

The retrospective includes his newer “documentary fiction,” where he sets a stage with imagery recalling rural shacks and rooms, sometimes using masks and costumes. Earlier images examining animism, the rural poor of South Africa, and portraits of mental patients left to fend for themselves will be here as well. The unusually disturbing power of this exhibit deserves a bit of an explanation.

In his work Theater of Apparitions, Ballen created a seven-part animated film inspired by scratched drawings he found in an abandoned women’s prison outside Johannesburg, South Africa. The series has a Hitchcockian creepiness, with ghosts of men, dancers, wolves and other creatures decapitating each other, axing each other, coupling, disintegrating and finally spewing forth from his jittering cranium. He says that drawings on glass windows by the women prisoners offered “insight into their stories.”

While dark humor abounds in the short film, it’s mostly, well, just dark. Other dark, and darkly humorous, film work includes his association with Cape Town band Die Antwoord (pictured on page 31).

His music video for “I Fink You Freeky” is the only one that bears his name as codirector, but several others include images of Ballen’s work, and the band’s distinctive style is generally acknowledged (by those who know his work) to be heavily Ballen-influenced. In a recent interview with Canadian music site Exclaim, band member Ninja said, “He’s the one who spawned us. We are literally like his disciples, his visual disciples. We make music, he does visuals. We’re his children.”

Ballen’s journey as an artist began in Johannesburg, where he moved after graduating from Berkeley in the early 1970s. “I traveled, of course,” he explains when asked why he made this his home.

“But I kept coming back. The tensions of apartheid drew me, as an artist, to explore its awful injustice. I found it to be a deep well to draw from.” Barred from visiting black townships, he instead visited dorps, the white shantytowns, in search of a greater understanding.

Halloween is here in full force, and Central Florida’s famous haunted houses are again offering jump-scares for the masses. But if you crave a more intimate way to celebrate spook season, try one of these tricks or treats on for size.

The 2016-2017 Fairwinds Broadway Across America series kicks off this week at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts with an unusual detour away from musicals and into magic. The Illusionists, a diverse troupe of prestidigitators who have performed on Broadway and across the country, arrives with seven master conjurors. One is Jeff “The Trickster” Hobson, who recently granted me an interview, in which he demonstrated his comedic coin manipulations while describing life on the road as a wandering wisecracking wizard. “The personalities in magic are weird, quirky individuals, because it is a strange dark art,” Hobson says, but he insists the team has no “prima donnas,” likening his cohorts to “the Avengers of magic.”

Hobson got hooked on magic at an early age, and was “the busiest magician in Detroit” by the time he finished high school. He’s since performed for Fortune 500 companies, on cruise ships, and at the defunct Caesar’s Magical Empire in Las Vegas, as well as venues ranging from minuscule to massive. “I’m a comedy club guy. I love being where I can touch the front row because intimacy is part of what’s great about theater,” he says as we discuss the challenges of performing sleight-ofhand in a 2,700-seat house. “Luckily, our show has a large high-def screen, so people in the back can see up close. I think that’s part of our success.”

At the same time, Hobson warns against thinking television or YouTube is a substitute for witnessing illusions live. “If I were king, I’d never rebroadcast magic, ever. It’s one medium that must be viewed in person. … Overall, it’s better for magic

THE STONE WALL L

Nope, not a racist, pie-in-the-sky, fantasy wall that displays no understanding of how continents or geopolitics work – a Stone Wall, also known as a Stone Fence, perhaps the first “cocktail” to be drunk in the United States.

Most of this column’s classic cocktails date to the early 20th century, sometimes the late 19th, but in fact, we weren’t even the United States yet when revolutionary fighters were downing this mixed drink of cider and rum. In 1775, Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys made the Catamount Tavern their militia headquarters, where they quaffed more than a few Stone Walls. Sadly, the origin of the name seems to be lost, though cocktail writer

David Wondrich suggests that the effect of drinking too many Stone Walls is “not unlike that produced by running downhill into one.”

This Colonial-era drink is just hard cider with a tot or two of rum, so that’s where I started, and you can’t go wrong with it – it’s a tasty fall beverage. However, to fancy it up into modernity, I tried a few different versions and techniques. My final Remix takes into account the fact that Laird’s Applejack was being distilled at the time of these interesting political shenanigans, and using that apple brandy (which has the fiery bite of whiskey) makes the drink even more patriotic. In addition to that substitution, I added some lemon juice to balance the sweet cider, some tea to give it smoky depth, and some ginger beer to give it a sparkle.

Then I went nuts and froze it, because there can never be enough slushies in Orlando’s godforsaken 90-degree “fall” weather. So here you have it, a frozen Stone Wall – all the spicy notes of fall, all the brain-freeze of summer. jyoung@orlandoweekly.com

CLASSIC: • 4 ounces hard cider, preferably on the sweet side • 2 ounces dark rum Pour both into a mug (with ice, if you have access to such a newfangled notion); stir; drink.

REMIXED: • 3 bottles of hard cider (about 36 ounces) • 8 ounces Laird’s Applejack • 12 ounces ginger beer • 6 ounces smoky tea (or pre-made chai blend, no milk) • 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice (Serves 4) First, pour the cider into clean icecube trays and freeze overnight or for at least six hours. If brewing your own tea, choose a smoky blend like oolong or lapsang souchong, and brew with enough time to chill completely before building the drink.

In a blender, combine all of the chilled ingredients. Pulse until slushy, then serve with a lemon slice and a straw. Toast the revolution!

Traditionalists can have a field day day here, for sure, but the adventurous can employ such ingredients as hot honey, charred peaches, blueberries, maple syrup and the like on their fast-blistered pizzas.

Entrees are hit-or-miss, including iffy baconwrapped smoked meatloaf – ours was so burnt we just ate the inside, though that was flavorful – and salmon and zoodles (salmon, meh; zoodles, totally delicious). It’s not as polished as 12 Years a Slave, a film it’s being compared to, but it’s just as important.

It doesn’t get everything right, however.

Parker’s directorial debut is often clunky, muddled and conventional, even heavyhanded, with writing that lacks crispness and a score that intrudes. Though Parker (Turner), Aja Naomi King (Turner’s wife), Colman Domingo (a fellow slave) and Penelope Ann Miller (a supporter of black rights) are stellar, some of the supporting actors range from merely competent (Armie Hammer, as the plantation owner) to unskilled. In addition, the movie plays loosely with the facts. For instance, the real Turner confessed to killing just one person (a woman whom he struck with a fence post). Much of his life is condensed or simply invented, and the movie misses an opportunity for much-needed moral ambiguity by ignoring the real rebellion’s slaughter of women and children. Still, can those who are passively complicit with slavery bear no blame? That question is too complex for this review, but it would have been nice to see the film tackle it.

Controversy surrounds this Birth as well: Both Parker and co-writer Jean McGianni Celestin were accused of rape in 1999.

But in the German-made Zuckerberg-era supernatural thriller Friend Request, being the first person to click “accept” on a mysterious user puts you into the orbit of a flesh-and-blood social misfit who’s just one suicide attempt away from becoming a vengeful wraith. The Girl on the Train Once you’ve been divorced, you come to regard happy couples the way Jane Goodall must view the primate world: a fascinating species in some way kindred to your own, but with enough fundamental differences to afford healthy scientific distance.

In The Girl on the Train, an adaptation of last year’s international best-seller, a jilted Emily Blunt similarly finds her curiosity stirred by a young couple whose relationship appears to be idyllic – a thesis that gets challenged somewhat when the wife goes missing. Critics called the book the new Gone Girl, which I guess means that nobody remembers Rear Window anymore, or even that episode of The Flintstones where Fred begins to suspect his neighbor of spousal homicide. Buncha lowbrows. (Rated R for violence, sexual content, language and nudity – none of which you will actually experience once you’re divorced.)

Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life Normally, when a studio advertises a movie as a cross between Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Home Alone, I respond about as enthusiastically as if they had called it a cross between syphilis and being run over by a Dodge Durango.

I reserve a particular loathing for Bueller, whose cast of entitled little liars and cheats in no way resembled anyone I knew or admired as a kid, and whose supporting roster of befuddled grownups were less persuasive as villains than the conniving, condescending adults who had obviously made the picture. Still, I’m willing to give the benefit of the doubt to Middle School, since the book on which it’s based reportedly presents a more nuanced portrait of the tweener experience in which some of the people who are working for starvation wages in your local educational institution are doing it because they actually want to help you. Plus, the disaffected protagonist’s mother is played by Lauren Graham, and I refuse to believe she would willingly be involved with something that was bad for me.

eremy Malvin has been banging on things since he was 2. Banging on things turned into lessons in guitar and classical percussion, which turned into formal training at the School of Music at the University of Michigan – and now, the steady, expansive rise of his solo project, Chrome Sparks. Chrome Sparks is slow-burning electronica, sweeping synths and explosive beats.

His latest track, “All or Nothing,” featuring Angelica Bess of the Brooklyn band Body Language, is moody in all the right ways, letting Bess’ graceful vocals shine through. The nine-and-a-half-minute “Ride the White Lighting” lets itself explore a whole range of sound while maintaining a carefully crafted dance beat. But it’s “Marijuana,” with its distorted samples and undeniably catchy drum hook, that first pulled hordes of fans to Chrome Sparks. Malvin was spending stints drumming in Miniature

The fall calendars have finally hit true fever pitch with a stampede of dope national names on the way, including (in chronological order) Astronautalis, Ho99o9, Against Me!, Beach Slang, Floor, DJ Abilities, True Widow, Jacuzzi Boys, Fear of Men, Mitski, Ted Leo, Kawabata Makoto (of Acid Mothers Temple), Jello Biafra and Legendary Shack Shakers.

THE BEAT

Hopefully, the latest episode of the every-so-often Country Covers series at Will’s Pub (Sept. 29) will jolt the event into regularity. This reboot featured the most lavish lineup yet and was, by far, the best attended.

The sheer number and variety of bright locals here was enough to dazzle with respected names like Eugene Snowden, Kaleigh Baker, Andy Matchett, Stephen Rock, Jacob Miller (Woolly Bushmen), Jordan Schneider (Slim Walker & His Orchestra), Phil Longo, Wheeler Newman, Beartoe, Tommy Cooper (Oak Hill Drifters) and, of course, cornerstone organizer Brian Chodorcoff.

Just as interesting, though, was the choice in material. Apparently, our city has taste both liberal and good about what qualifies as “classic country,” with covers spanning traditional icons like Dolly Parton and Conway Twitty, progressive legends like Gram Parsons and Townes Van Zandt, and even modern young guns like Ryan Adams.

Both onstage and on the floor, this was the biggest edition of Country Covers so far. The fact that it’s a canned food drive for Fern Creek Elementary School’s pantry program elevates it from great party to true engine of good. With local musicians, local fans and local cause, this wasn’t just another show – it was an evening of total community.

Country music and community are both precious things. But food is essential.

You can never fully know that until you’ve been on the underside of things. Because it serves underprivileged neighborhoods like Parramore and receives all elementary-aged students living at the Coalition for the Homeless, more than 85 percent of Fern Creek’s student population lives in poverty, and more than 20 percent are homeless, according to the school’s foundation. So, while it’s a really fun night out, its purpose is why the Country Covers event really matters. Add in the robust support this time, and everyone deserves a salute.

Of all the bands in the wide psychedelic galaxy, the Dandy Warhols (Sept. 30, the Social) are maybe the most reliably sunny. The Portland heroes like their trips with big, buoyant bounce. And rather than be slave to purism, they’ve always run their funhouse by their own rules, getting subtly weird with a roaming, pop-smart sensibility. In a genre practically endemic with rehash and cliché, they’ve managed to forge an original signature.

But even though their jams have been rocking the dance floor two doors down at Independent Bar for at least 15 years, the Dandies have been practically allergic to Orlando. According to frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor’s own recollection, it’s been 19 years since their last appearance here.

So, yeah, their recent Orlando stop was, historically speaking, a bit of a big deal.

As soundscapers both ambitious and seasoned, they brought elaborate and lush sonic production, an extraordinary inperson encounter and the mark of serious craft. This was no punk show. With lots of near-tactile vibes, texture and throb, the Dandy Warhols live experience has a depth of dimension that’s rare in concert.

Comprised of members of Cheap Time and Heavy Cream, openers new Nashville band Savoy Motel have a strange kaleidoscope of styles that encompasses glam rock, garage, soul and dance. As you try to imagine how that scramble might manifest, just know that they’re essentially a gallery of luscious ’70s sounds (and looks).

Though schizophrenic on record, the more cohesively rock step they pack live gives nice point to their swagger. It’s rock & roll with a strut that slinks and shines like polyester, unapologetic and glorious in its revivalism. baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

And the potentially great news for game Bachmann ticket holders is that the Posies’ full-band concert is only three blocks away at Park Ave CDs, and the local promoters have coordinated so that the Posies will begin about 15 minutes after Bachmann concludes. How’s that for community? It’s a prime and very rare doubleheader night of up-close special engagements with canonical hall-of-famers. – Bao Le-Huu

Driven by audience-suggested topics, words and themes, it’s part improv performance, part linguistic exercise and part rap master class, and it’s always as jaw-droppingly impressive as it is entertaining. It also shouldn’t distract you from the fact that this former Floridian has been releasing albums of increasing complexity and intricacy since 2003.

His most recent release, Cut the Body Loose, finds him on the punk-adjacent SideOneDummy label with production

There Will Be Words Flash Fiction Spooktacular LITERARY

For those wondering why this isn’t a Rollins Band (if you’re even thinking of Black Flag, you’re just being silly) performance, the answer is stark and almost chilling in its Kafka-esque simplicity. Henry Rollins, the man who wrote “Nothing Left Inside” and “Liar,” simply woke up one morning and realized that he had no more lyrics left in him. So he called up his manager and said, “I’m done.” With that annoyance out of the way, Rollins went right back to work. Lucky for us, his work as it stands in 2016 is, in its own less amplified way, just as trenchant, outraged and bleak as it was during the Get in the Van glory days. Rollins has been doing spoken word since the waning days of Black Flag, and he approaches a performance much in the way he did a punk gig; no words are wasted, the barbs dig deep and the outlook is dark. And yet Rollins can be wickedly funny and genuinely engaging in a way that stand-up comedians or TED talkers would kill for. Expect him to cover the election and other hot-button issues of the day; if hyper-caffeinated progressive-minded anger rankles, maybe listen to some Infowars reruns in your mom’s basement. – Matthew Moyer

Urban legend has it that Ernest Hemingway once bet a group of other writers that he could create a spooky short story in less than 10 words, and won with “For sale, baby shoes, never worn.” The accuracy of this story has been challenged over time, but the “less is more” credo still rings true, particularly in the horror genre. It’s easy to create a bad scary story – anyone who’s seen the glut of Saw movies or half-hearted Halloween offshoots can attest to that – and simpler approaches often resonate more deeply with audiences who are used to horror attempts that overwhelm with gore and underwhelm with actual fear. We won’t pretend we weren’t shaking at the end of the original low-budget Blair Witch Project or after reading The Long Walk, a short story by Richard Bachman (Stephen King’s early pseudonym). This week, local reading series There Will Be Words seeks to capitalize on simplicity in horror with their Flash Fiction Spooktacular, where eight writers have 500 words or less to leave you sleeping with the lights on that night. Some stories may leave you in a cold sweat, others may just leave you cold. But you’ve got nothing to lose by checking it out: maybe someone will even have some baby shoes for sale. – Abby Stassen

Against Me! MUSIC

It’s amazing what being yourself can do. Against Me!’s lead singer and songwriter went from going by Thomas James Gabel to christening herself Laura Jane Grace, and at the same time, the band’s promo pics grew more intimate and friendly, almost as if their main subject felt comfortable getting closer, even smiling – a step that, to this day, must be taken with caution in punk. But the changes have been more than just physical.

They’re elevated to spiritual heights in tracks like “Boyfriend” from 2016’s Shape Shift With Me, where Grace laments that a partner isn’t seeing her how she sees herself, for who she is. The themes in this album can probably be traced back to the identity manifesto that was 2014’s Transgender Dysphoria Blues. But how could they not? Important stuff has happened! A question on your favorite topic, Dan. Just kidding, it’s a question about my vagina.

I’m having a problem with the microbiome of my vulva and vagina. I’ve been going to my gyno for the last six months for recurrent bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections. She shrugs, gives me a script, the symptoms go away for a week or so, then they come back.

I understand the infections are likely due to an imbalance in my vaginal pH, but I don’t know what to do to fix this. I’ve used probiotic suppositories to boost the amount of lactobacillus and these help more than anything else, but the problem remains. I also wear cotton, loose-fitting undies and practice good hygiene and never douche or use anything scented. The problem started when I stopped using condoms with my partner, but it’s not an STI. We’ve both been tested.

There’s tons of sites online talking about this problem, but no one has a solution that I’ve found. How the hell can women with this problem fix their pH?! Thanks a ton if you read this far, and thanks a million tons if you or one of your experts has any ideas to help.

Vexed Und Lacking Vaginal Answers “I love that she used the word ‘vulva,’” says Dr. Debby Herbenick, a research scientist at Indiana University, a sexual health educator at the Kinsey Institute and the author of Read My Lips: A Complete Guide to the Vagina and Vulva and numerous other books. “Most people have no idea what that even is!”

I know what that is! (Full disclosure: I know what that is now. I didn’t know what that was when I started writing this column.)

The vulva is (the vulva are?) the external genitalia of the female – the labia, the clit, the vaginal opening, some other bits and pieces. (Fun fact: Vulva is Latin for wrapper.) The vagina, aka “the muscular tube,” runs from the vulva to the uterus. (Fun fact: Vagina is Latin for the sheath of a sword.)

People tend to use “vagina” when referring to a woman’s junk generally, and while meaning follows use and I’m inclined to give it a pass, saying “vagina” when you mean “vulva” makes scientists like Dr. Herbenick rather teste. (Sad fact: Teste is not the singular form of testes.) Now back to your vulva and vagina, VULVA …

Dr. Herbenick recommends seeing a “true vulvovaginal health expert” (TVHE) about your problem, VULVA, and your gynecologist presumably qualifies as a TVHE … right?

“Not necessarily,” says Dr. Herbenick.

“Gynecologists know far more about vaginal and vulvar health issues than most health care providers, but many gynecologists haven’t received deep-dive (pun not intended) specialized training in difficult-totreat vulvovaginal health conditions. And if they have, it was likely when they were in med school – so years ago. They might not be up to date in the latest research, since not all doctors go to vulvovaginal-specific conferences.”

Is there a fix for that problem?

There’s far more research on men and cycling, due to the risks of bike-seat-related erectile dysfunction specifically and our society’s tendency to prioritize boners generally.

“The few studies that have been conducted on women and cycling – generally cisgender women as far as I can tell – found that cutout seats are linked with a higher risk of genital symptoms, as are handlebars that are lower than the saddle,” Dr. Herbenick says. “So broader saddles and higher handlebars may be the way to go. Some of the research notes higher rates of genital symptoms among people who go on longer rides, spending hours in the saddle.”

To decrease your risk of un-fun genital symptoms, BRITCHES, Dr. Herbenick recommends mixing it up.

“Go biking some weekends and try other activities on other weekends – maybe hiking or swimming? You might also take Dan’s ‘fuck first’ Valentine’s Day advice and apply it to your weekend rides. And if you’re prone to post-intercourse semen leakage (and, really, who isn’t?) use a condom or have him come elsewhere pre-ride so you don’t have the semen seepage issue to contend with on a long ride. I hope this helps!”

“Yes! If everyone lobbied for their doctors to go to events like the annual conference of the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease (ISSVD),” says Dr. Herbenick, “we would live in a country with millions more happy, healthy, sex-interested women and others with vaginas and vulvas, too, like trans men.”

As for your particular problem – a tough case of bacterial vaginosis – Dr. Herbenick, who isn’t a medical doctor but qualifies as a TVHE, had some thoughts.

“There are many different forms of bacterial vaginosis (BV) and different kinds of yeast infections,” Dr. Herbenick says. “These different kinds respond well to different kinds of treatment, which is one reason home yeast meds don’t work well for many women. And all too often, health care providers don’t have sufficient training to make fine-tuned diagnoses and end up treating the wrong thing. But if VULVA’s recurrences are frequent, I think it’s a wise idea for her to see a true specialist.”

A TVHE is likelier to pinpoint the problem.

Even so, Dr. Herbenick warns that it may take more than one visit with a TVHE to solve the problem.

“I don’t want to over-promise, since BV remains a challenging diagnosis and often does come back at some point,” Dr. Herbenick says. “There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to BV, which is also why I think VULVA is best off meeting with a health care provider who lives and breathes vaginal health issues. The ISSVD is full of health care providers like that – they’re the Sherlock Holmes of vaginas and vulvas, none of this ‘shrug and here’s a script’ business. YOU CAN HELP: Wherever you fall on the debate about sex work – it should be decriminalized, it shouldn’t be decriminalized – everyone agrees that women who engage in sex work shouldn’t be punished.

Yet thousands of women are incarcerated for prostitution or prostitution-related crimes.

I have a question about biking and female genitalia. I’m a woman in my 40s, and I love biking! My husband and I often go for long rides on the weekend.

Unfortunately, this makes various parts of my crotch sore, especially the clitoris.

Certain bike seats are better, but none eliminate the soreness. Two years ago, we had a baby, which not only made my crotch more prone to soreness but makes it a lot less likely that we’ll have sex except on weekends, often after biking. The sore clit makes sex more painful, but it also increases sensitivity, so the whole thing can be an alternating experience of “Ow!” and “Wow!” Am I causing my clit any permanent damage by the biking and/or the post-bike poking?
