¶ Putting on our big boy pants Just like a partner who has suffered from longstanding domestic abuse, we just try to get through the latest daily onslaught. Soon we will have evicted the Orange One from our brains. Recovery in the personal realm can take years. But since this was more than arm’s length away, we can quickly do better. The bad guy in the relationship righteously takes the heat. But you have to know that adults have to make their own way in the world and deal with the full spectrum of reality. We have the responsibility for our own country. Bad players hampered our ability to stop or slow the destruction. Now we will share that burden. Adults do that. The life you save is not just your own. For the next six months in Orlando, open a window in a room and close a vent. Sleep separately if one of the minimum wage workers forced to get out in the world has to live under the same roof. It’s a very nasty hill we are climbing. Two, four, eight, 16, 32, 64 thousand. That sudden increase means out of 18 people on a bus, not only is one positive but he or she has a good chance of being contagious. If you work inside, then breathing the same air and not opening a window is risky. Especially in the lunchroom or on the ride in with a co-worker.
‘COUPS FOR DUMMIES’
It is human nature to take a breather and play games after a stress. Right now is the most important moment in the lives of your loved ones. Kids used to literally wear shorts until old enough to get pants. Time to put on your big boy pants and deal. Time to wear the mask, and quit getting drunk then hugging, or going to church and grasping hands, even with masks. You can do it. You were raised right. Catherine Hettinger, Winter Park

¶ Kickback to the future Last week, we wrote about a German company that plans to launch a “vertiport” in Lake Nona (“Flying cars in Orlando? The first U.S. ‘air taxi’ hub is coming to Lake Nona by 2025,” Nov. 11). Lilium, a German aviation company, got the green light to build a 56,000-square-foot facility for their vertical takeoff, five-passenger aircraft, with City Council approving over $800,000 in tax breaks. Readers were intrigued. @Christian Lee Time to move forward into the future ... little Cessna planes always have problems and crash. This way of flight might actually turn out to be much safer! @Joey Cruz Alicea LOL, y’all better up your homeowners’ insurance to include falling aircrafts/drones!

Fried urges halt on toll road projects Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried wants the state to put the brakes on a series of controversial toll road projects as lawmakers face budget shortfalls. Three Department of Transportation task forces sent recommendations Thursday to lawmakers about the projects, including recommending a need for more economic and environmental-impact studies before the projects are built from Collier County in Southwest Florida to Jefferson County near the Georgia border. Fried used the recommendations when she issued a statement saying the projects, which are projected to require up to $101.7 million a year, will “put an unnecessary strain on the state’s ability to fund urgent priorities.” “Just as compelling are the effects these unnecessary toll roads will have on Florida’s environment and agricultural lands, with the potential to destroy millions of acres of farmland, state forests, and wetlands in their paths,” Fried said in the statement. “This project threatens the unique character of our state’s rural lands and last undeveloped landscapes.” Fried is the only statewide elected Democrat and has fed speculation that she’s interested in running for governor in 2022. The projects – dubbed Multi-use Corridors of Regional Economic Significance, or M-CORES – would extend the Suncoast Parkway from Citrus County to Jefferson County, extend Florida’s Turnpike from Wildwood to connect with the Suncoast Parkway and create a new road linking Polk and Collier counties. A top priority of outgoing Senate President Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, the projects were approved in a bill signed into law by Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2019. The legislation anticipated construction beginning in January 2023 and being completed by 2030. The task force reports suggested lawmakers direct the Department of Transportation to further determine if the roads would reduce congestion on Interstate 75; establish how the roads would be used for disaster evacuations and response; consider the economic pluses and minuses in shifting traffic into new rural regions; work with local governments so utility and broadband expansions meet existing policies about urban sprawl; and protect environmentally sensitive resources such as springs, wetlands, and floodplains in support of habitat conservation and water quality. 10
“The traffic analysis should also consider … potential long-term changes in travel behavior, such as greater propensity for working from home and increased home delivery of goods and services,” the report from the Northern Turnpike Connector Task Force said. A similar sentiment was suggested by the other task forces that worked on the Suncoast Parkway extension and the new road known as the Southwest-Central Florida Connector, which would link Collier and Polk counties. Members of the Southwest-Central Florida Connector task force included the need to address habitat for endangered Florida panthers in their recommendations. Environmentalists who have been critical of the review process were quick to note that the task force findings don’t point to an immediate need for the corridors. The roads have been backed by groups such as the Florida Chamber of Commerce, Associated Industries of Florida, the Florida Ports Council and the Florida Trucking Association as a way to bring economic opportunity, along with utilities including broadband, to rural communities. The chamber on Friday called the task-force process “a new way of deliberately planning for the population increases we know we are going to have.” Fried acknowledged the need for long-range planning for economic development and the state’s growing population. But she said she was troubled by the “overwhelming lack of support, lack of demonstrated need, and the millions in general revenue diverted from a state budget facing economic shortfalls reminiscent of the Great Recession.” With the state of tourism causing massive damage to businesses and tax revenues, state economists have estimated lawmakers will be working with a potential budget shortfall of about $2.7 billion for the 2021-2022 fiscal year and $1.9 billion for the following budget year. Fried’s statement was accompanied by skeptical comments about the multi-use corridors from three task-force members: Hawthorne Mayor Matt Surrency, former Gainesville Mayor Pegeen Hanrahan and former Hendry County Commissioner Janet Taylor. “Ultimately, I don’t think the case has been made that M-CORES and this new section of turnpike is needed, and it has many negative potential impacts to a part of our state that is truly special,” said Hanrahan, who served on the Suncoast Parkway task force. – By Jim Turner, NSF

Sun sets on Sunshine State elections What felt like a never-ending campaign season continues to linger more than a week after Election Day and after President-elect Joe Biden nailed down the requisite number of electoral votes to secure a White House victory. President Donald Trump has refused to concede the race, and many of his supporters say they may never accept his Democratic challenger as the nation’s commander-in-chief. For a change, Florida is out of the spotlight as officials in other states continue to count ballots and fend off Trump lawsuits in the run-up to electoral-college votes on Dec. 14, when the occupant of the Oval Office will be formally determined. While election-fatigued citizens could face another month of presidential hijinks, Florida officials are on track to finalize the state’s results next week. The Florida Elections Canvassing Commission met at 9 a.m. Tuesday to certify the official returns, which county supervisors of elections have to submit to the state no later than noon Sunday. The state’s certification of the 2020 general election occurs on the same day lawmakers return to Tallahassee for an organization session to swear in new legislators and give the gavels to incoming Senate President Wilton Simpson and incoming House Speaker Chris Sprowls. Republicans head into the 2021 legislative session with gains in both chambers, in addition to delivering what by Florida standards is considered a landslide victory – three percentage points – to Trump. Floridians this week withstood a tropical storm along the state’s west coast, a pandemic that continues to proliferate and uncertainty about a peaceful transfer of power in Washington. Meanwhile, Biden, a devout Catholic, spoke with a number of world leaders, including Pope Francis. The comments shared by the two leaders could be a guide in a turbulent political era in which Americans are deeply divided, aggrieved and angry. According to a readout of Thursday’s phone call with the pope, Biden “thanked His Holiness for extending blessings and congratulations and noted his appreciation for His Holiness’ leadership in promoting peace, reconciliation, and the common bonds of humanity around the world.” – By Dara Kam, NSF

A FAUSTIAN BARGAIN For four years, the GOP sat back and watched the monster of cultural grievance Trump created become a powerful political force. Now they’re stuck with it … and so are we BY JEFFREY C. BILL M A N
T
his won’t end well. Ignore, for the moment, the fact that 73 million people voted for an authoritarian nihilist whose casual indifference to the COVID-19 pandemic and general incompetence have already contributed to hundreds of thousands of deaths and will almost certainly contribute to tens of thousands more before his term ends. Ignore, too, the flashing neon signs warning about our undemocratic democracy: Four years ago, Donald Trump won 306 electoral votes while earning 2.9 million fewer popular votes than his opponent; two weeks ago, Joe Biden had to beat Trump by 5 million votes to match that total, and Trump still came within 110,000 or so well-placed votes of pulling another Electoral College inside straight. Focus on what’s happened since the election. What’s unnerving isn’t that Trump has spent the last two weeks venting a nonstop stream of paranoid delusions about a vast plot to deprive him of a second term. That much could be explained by any shrink. When malignant narcissists fail, Psychology Today told us in July, they become “metastable,” placing “family, friends, co-workers, corporations, the public, or a nation in greatest danger. … If evidence is presented, they will seek to have it invalidated or claim that it is false, fake, or a product of vague conspiracies, but most certainly not true. Any evidence presented, and those that present it, will be attacked aggressively and vindictively. … The narcissist will engage supporters or enablers to simultaneously attack those who offer proof or evidence, even
if it embarrassingly exposes their poodle-like behavior as that of spineless sycophants. … Expect lies to increase and to be repeated exponentially. They will, even in light of factual evidence to the contrary, lie more profusely and adamantly.” Sound familiar? I don’t know whether Trump believes his own bullshit. To be honest, I don’t really care. I care about this: People are dying, and Trump no longer even pretends to bother with his day job. Instead, he’s attacking the legitimacy of the election and the incoming administration, sabotaging the transition during a crisis, and spending every waking hour telling his followers there’s a conspiracy to steal the election. He is the victim. They should be angry. They need to fight back. Message received: “I believe the fate of the republic hangs in the balance here,” Fox Business host Lou Dobbs told U.S. Rep. Devin Nunes, who once sued a fake cow on Twitter. “If Republicans don’t challenge and change the U.S. election system, there will never be another Republican president elected again,” Sen. Lindsey Graham, who left his last shred of dignity in John McCain’s coffin, told Fox News Sunday. “President Trump should not concede.” It’s hardly worth pointing out that none of this exists in real life. Republicans can’t find fraud. Trump’s lawsuits are a joke. His own government admits everything ran smoothly. He’s too far behind for recounts to matter. The election is over.
Yet the charade has taken a toll. Only 26 percent of Republicans believe the election was fair, according to a Morning Consult poll. Just 34 percent trust the democratic process – half the amount that did so before the election. No matter how decisive Biden’s win, a significant proportion of the public will always believe the fix was in. Trump might not be able to help himself. But his Republican enablers know better. Had they denounced the fusillade of lies and conspiracies – or even ignored it – they might not have stopped Trump’s base from believing him, but they wouldn’t have reinforced him, either. “There is no evidence of fraud” wouldn’t have become a partisan statement. But given the choice of coddling Trump’s tantrum or protecting democratic institutions, Republicans chose Trump. Only four of 53 Republican senators have bothered to congratulate the president-elect. Two said there was nothing to congratulate Biden for. The 2024 wannabes – Sens. Marco Rubio, Tom Cotton, Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley – snapped to attention when Don Jr. accused the party of “cower[ing] to the media mob.” The two Republican senators from Georgia, who face runoff elections in January, demanded that Georgia’s Republican secretary of state resign after Trump whined about losing the state. Trump’s Cabinet has gotten in on the action, too. Attorney General William Barr appeased the Boss by green-lighting his prosecutors to investigate “voting irregularities”; the head of the DOJ’s Election Crimes Branch resigned in protest. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo promised reporters there would be a “smooth transition to a second Trump administration,” then berated a reporter who asked about the hypocrisy of lecturing other countries’ leaders on accepting defeat while Trump refuses to do the same. To the degree there’s an end game, it’s to convince Republican state legislatures to circumvent voters and appoint their own slates of electors – a dubious legal strategy that has nonetheless spread throughout the conservative media ecosystem, endorsed by the likes of Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Don Jr. and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. The fact that major right-wing figures – allies of the president – are talking out loud about what can only be described as a coup, based solely on hallucinations about fraud, without fear of marginalization or recrimination, tells you everything you need to know about the modern Republican Party. The truth is, Republicans made a Faustian bargain: Defend Trump’s racism, corruption and demagoguery; get tax cuts and judges. Republicans can say they don’t want to antagonize Trump and risk demoralizing the party’s base ahead of the Georgia runoffs – as if cowardice and political calculation are acceptable excuses for crapping on democratic institutions – but for four years, they sat back and watched the monster of cultural grievance Trump created become a powerful political force. So long as it benefited them, they said nothing. Now they’re stuck with it. The rest of us are, too.

HOLIDAY

Magic makers By Holly V. Kapherr Alejos
S
ince March, Disney has laid off or furloughed thousands of creatives, and many have turned to side hustles to make ends meet. This holiday, you can support their endeavors by shopping from the Ear for Each Other group on Facebook, which showcases items made by former Disney employees. The COVID-19 pandemic has roiled Orlando’s workforce. While the April quarantine and long-standing safety measures kept thousands safe from the illness, they also meant thousands of jobs lost. No doubt, the hardest-hit sector of our local economy are theme park and hospitality employees. Walt Disney World alone has seen more than 50,000 furloughs and lay-offs of part-time, seasonal, fulltime and union employees. Orlando’s plethora of entertainers, performers, artists, and hospitality professionals are our “magic makers.” They’re what keep this city vibrant and churning with creative energy, and many of Orlando’s most influential artisans and businesses started their careers with the Mouse. But with the shuttering of the theme parks and hotels in March, and subsequent limited operations still ongoing with limited tourism due to closed borders, these employees have a lot of creative energy and nowhere to spend it. Or, so we thought. Enter “Ear for Each Other,” a Facebook group founded by Maxine Pollakis, a 22-year Disney cast member who started the group with three others – two laid off, one furloughed, one still employed. The group aims to give furloughed and laid-off Disney cast members (CMs) a place to promote and market their side hustles, whether they’re creative or practical, to an audience seeking to support them. “When the group was created,” says Pollakis, “the federal aid for Floridians was ending, leaving [the CMs] to earn about $200 per week. I knew so many were struggling and wondered how I could help.” Pollakis looked no further than her own social network, where she found CMs painting,

Magical Charcuterie by Ali Spinelli baking bread, making candles and soaps, starting pressurewashing and auto detailing businesses, and more. “We created a space where impacted CMs could showcase their creative work and share their services with the community. Our forum now includes more than 30,000 CMs and community members,” says Pollakis. “Disney cast members are incredibly talented, and it’s very common for artists to find ways to be creative, no matter the circumstances.” We reached out to the Ear for Each Other community to hear some stories of affected cast members, and received more than 100 responses. Chefs, woodworkers, bakers, watercolor artists, hand-letterers, costumers, graphic designers – we were humbled by the ingenuity, imagination and downright scrappiness displayed by these Orlandoans. Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised. These are the people that make Orlando one of the world’s top tourist destinations, after all. This season, consider checking off the gifts on your list by scrolling through Ear for Each Other and ordering from the CMs’ Facebook pages, Etsy shops and Instagram feeds. On the group, there are dedicated “albums” for commonly requested items like holiday ornaments, masks and specific crafts. Here are some of our favorite stories. We couldn’t fit all of them, but you can find photos from almost all of the makers we heard from, along with links to order, on orlandoweekly.com. ALI SPINELLI / Magical Charcuterie Charcuterie boxes “I grew up performing – singing and dancing, and I wanted to keep that part of my identity, so I went to a Disney audition on a whim,” says Spinelli, who worked as a character performer for two and a half years before being laid off. Spinelli is a full-time student, and always loved cooking and baking. After learning about Ear for Each Other from her mom, Spinelli posted some pictures of charcuterie boards she had made for friends and family. “It blew up,” she says, and now she delivers these gorgeous boards to the Disney resorts and small gatherings around town, and offers keto, gluten-free and vegetarian boxes as

DAN OTTE / Madz Woodworkz Custom cornhole boards After being laid off from a job as an executive sales director for an education company, Dan Otte turned to valet parking in the interim. “A job in my field was just very hard to come by,” he says. In December 2019, he started work as the valet captain at Disney’s Polynesian Resort. “Everything was going well, and then one day they let us know that we wouldn’t be working until further notice.” Otte started woodworking in high school and made a few household items like headboards and kitchen tables as a hobby. Before posting his custom cornhole boards on Ear for Each Other, he wasn’t sure how he’d make his bills, let alone give his kids gifts for Christmas. With his one post, he now has more than 50 orders for cornhole boards to be produced before Christmas, and has room for only 10 more orders. “This community has been so supportive,” says Otte, “All we can do is pray and help our friends who need it.” Order by visiting facebook.com/madzwoodworkz. EMILY URRESTA / Busy Bee Crochet Plushies “Growing up, I was always told, ‘Go into hospitality because people will always travel and go out to eat,’” says Emily Urresta, who is furloughed from her job as a coordinator at Wilderness Lodge. “It was job security – until it wasn’t.” She and her mom, a cook at Grand Floridian, both found themselves out of work. “I had seen these giant crochet bees on TikTok, and really wanted to make one, and that was the start of all this,” says Urresta. The bee turned out great, so they started working on other crochet projects, posting their plushies on Ear for Each Other. Urresta’s mom, Pilar, does the bulk of the crochet work and Emily takes on the marketing. Now, they produce gorgeous amigurumistyle crochet plushies, including Disney characters like
Stickers and water bottle by Hayley Kaye Stitch, Tigger and the dancing hippos from Fantasia. “This has been a huge struggle, but when you see the end result, it’s amazing.” Order by visiting facebook.com/ busybeecrochetplushies or follow Urresta at @BusyBeeCrochetPlushies on Instagram. HAYLEY KAYE / Hayley Kaye Creations Inspirational paper goods “I’ve always struggled with anxiety,” says Hayley Kaye, who was furloughed from her job as a server at Morimoto Asia in March. “I was excited about the opportunity for some time off at first, but the anxiety and fear started to grow slowly as time went on,” she says. “I started turning to crafting and painting and drawing to channel that energy.” At the same time, Kaye was participating in a social media internship where she learned how to build an audience and a brand on Instagram. “I thought, why don’t I try this for myself,” says Kaye, who now has an audience of more than 2.5K followers on her Instagram feed, @IAmHayleyKaye, which focuses on mental health. Her inspirational journals, stickers, buttons and prints feature positive affirmations apropos in hard times. Order by visiting etsy.com/hayleykayecreations or follow Kaye at @IAmHayleyKaye on Instagram. WENDY MAXWELL / WenMax Designs Upcycled handbags With a master’s degree in costume design, Wendy Maxwell created costumes for Mad Cow Theatre, Orlando REP and Theatre UCF while working for 12 years in Disney’s costuming department. She is currently laid off. “About three years ago, I found an old
vinyl Barbie box at Orange Tree Antiques,” she says. “I made a bag out of it and loved how it looked, so I got another Barbie box. Then my friends started to ask for them.” Maxwell loves breathing new life into vintage items, so now she sells her upcycled bags on her Etsy store. “We find ourselves in this really awful situation, but through Ear for Each Other, we can offer support and encouragement, which is amazing when it feels like you just had your legs kicked out from under you.” Order by visiting etsy.com/ wenmaxdesigns. KACIN MERCER / Kacin’s Studio Custom Pet Portraits A former entertainment manager at Epcot, Kacin Mercer was furloughed in March and just got word that she’ll be laid off in December. “I have a background in acrobatics, and love performing,” she says, “but ever since I was a child, I had a real passion for painting.” Mercer and her husband moved to Orlando from North Carolina to pursue their dreams – hers at Disney and his as a massage therapist. “When we found out that I was going to be furloughed, my husband, who has always been very supportive, encouraged me to start painting full time.” She posted a few of her colorful pet portraits on the Ear for Each Other Facebook group and the response was immense. “I fully believe that being furloughed was an opening door rather than a closed one,” says Mercer. “When you have all this creative energy, it’s a sure bet you’ll find somewhere to put it.” Order by visiting kacinsstudio.com or follow Mercer at @KacinsStudio on Instagram. feedback@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

ancel Thanksgiving? Ha! Maybe in Canada, but not in the good ol’ U.S. of Coronavirus, where many remain undeterred in the face of 10 million COVID-19 cases and a quarter-million deaths. Of course people will gather, indoors and outdoors, to communally feast and watch football with family and friends while others head out to various restaurants – a few operating at 100 percent capacity – for special Thanksgiving Day meals and, oof, buffets. Sensible folks will take a more Faucian approach and hold small gatherings at home, ideally ones limited to members of the household (seated outdoors), to curb the inevitable spread. I hope, dear reader, you count yourself among that group. And should you opt to support local restaurants by getting Thanksgiving Day takeout, well, all the better. The list presented here may even serve to make your decision a little easier. But before poring over the names, it’s important to note that Native Americans commemorate Thanksgiving as a National Day of Mourning. No doubt that’ll take on an added significance this year. BY SETH KUBERSKY
Paris Crayton’s ‘Birth of an Artistic Director’ finds the humor in a fraught situation After months of peering at per-
formers through pixelated Brady Bunch boxes, I’d basically sworn off watching any more online plays. But just when I thought I was out, playwright Paris Crayton III pulled me back in with last weekend’s world premiere of Birth of an Artistic Director, a riveting dramedy that should be considered required viewing for anyone invested in social justice and theater. Producer Beth Marshall, who previously collaborated with Crayton on his autobiographical musical Spare the Rod, has a history of presenting plays examining racial issues, including 2014’s multi-part Trayvon Martin Project. In the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement – which Beth Marshall Presents hosted a threeday virtual protest for in June – the pair have teamed up on an original script that, although ostensibly fictional, is sure to strike a sensitive nerve (or 10) among Orlando’s theater community. Directly inspired by last summer’s “We See You, White American Theater” petition supported by Broadway stars, Crayton’s story starts as a Tony-winning regional theater has been publicly called out by BIPOC activists for being insufficiently inclusive. Bob (Patrick Flick), the company’s entrenched artistic director of three decades, is cajoled into a Zoom meeting with the protest leaders by Marsha (Beth Marshall), his performatively woke executive director. Bob agrees to present more playwrights of color – enthusiastically suggesting August Wilson’s entire Pittsburgh cycle, and an all-Black Christmas Carol with a tap-dancing Scrooge – but he loses his cool when Jasmine (Meka King) and Daniel (Stelson Telfort) demand he step aside and install Susan (Alaina Kai Chester), the company’s business manager, as its new head. The passionate negotiations and polarizing name-calling that ensue could have been drawn verbatim from real-life argu-

ments I’ve heard in recent months, and Crayton smartly allows each side to have their say; although it’s evident where his sympathies lie, he allows every character to express valid points, while simultaneously poking holes in their positions. Even Bob, whose cheerfully condescending liberalism belies an ocean of entitlement, elicits some human sympathy as a once-productive artist who doesn’t know when it’s time to step out of the spotlight. (For the record, you don’t have to be Black to be infuriated at longtime leaders who won’t move aside for younger talent.) The only character not subject to such equivocation is Susan’s father, Peter (Dennis Neal), who sagely advises her to seize her own power, instead of relying on others to grant it. This is powerful subject matter, and could easily fall prey to becoming a ponderous polemic that only preaches to the choir. Birth of an Artistic Director is effective as a piece of entertainment, as well as activism, because Crayton and the cast – directed by Roberta Emerson with surprising subtlety and precision, considering the streaming format’s limitation – aren’t afraid to find the humor in such a serious situation. Much of the comedy comes courtesy of the narrated stage directions (Susan Neal), which provide fourth-wall-breaking meta-commentary in a witty twist on a tired technique. That laughter encourages viewers to let their guard down long enough for the script’s provocative ideas to slip into their brains, where they’re likely to reverberate for days after. And while the play’s premise seems to
depict the arts as a zero-sum game, its conclusion leaves me optimistic that we can enlarge the pie of opportunity for all, instead of fighting among ourselves over crumbs. Tickets to stream Birth of an Artistic Director can still be purchased through bethmarshallpresents.wordpress.com until Nov. 30, but attendees on opening night had the opportunity to participate in a virtual talkback with Crayton, Marshall and other members of the production, which turned out to be as engaging as the play itself. I’ll let them have the last word, in their own words: Beth Marshall: “This was not an easy role for me. It made me think a lot about the conversations that I have with people. … I’m in a gatekeeper position; open this door, share the space, and let people do their thing. … It’s a lot of food for thought, and it’s a lot of work that still needs to be done. And I am, I have to say, pleased to see more and more theaters – globally, but specifically Central Florida arts organizations – having these conversations and doing some work.” Paris Crayton III: “Just don’t let it stop there; don’t let it stop with conversation, let’s see changes. … In order to make change we have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. It’s not going to be easy; these conversations will not be easy, but these are conversations that we need to have. Trust me, as a Black man, [I] don’t walk this life in a comfortable position. I’m always uncomfortable; anytime I step outside, I’m uncomfortable. … It’s time for you all to be OK with being uncomfortable.” skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

“ADD IT UP” I’ve always been excited by BDSM, but I’ve only minimally explored this side of myself until very recently. I’m a straight woman and it was difficult to find men who wanted more monogamish relationships on the traditional apps and a challenge to be honest about what I am looking for where kink is concerned. I’d often get through a month or so of seeing someone before finding out they wanted a completely monogamous relationship and that they were very vanilla in the bedroom to boot. I was tired of wasting my time and needed to find a partner who wanted to enjoy a kinky relationship, so I moved from traditional dating apps like Bumble and Hinge and to apps like #Open, Fetlife and KinkD. While I’ve had a few amazing conversations and meet ups, they’ve primarily been with men in open relationships, couples or guys only looking to hook up. And it seems most people on kinky apps want to only talk about sex. While I do feel drawn to this lifestyle, I am also looking for a partner. I want someone to spend my life with who can also enjoy the kink community with me. How can I find a guy that wants a life partner and a fun and kinky sex life? P.S. One more question: I’m currently enjoying casual sex with a male partner who only buys magnum-size condoms but who does not need magnum-size condoms. It’s like fucking a half-empty grocery store bag. How do I tell him regular condoms would be soooooo much better without making him feel bad? Seeks Partner And Needs Kink Whether you’re on kinky dating apps or mainstream dating apps or both, SPANK, you’re gonna have a lot of interactions with a lot of guys who aren’t right for you before you find the guy (or guys) who are right for you. And since there are plenty of kinky people on mainstream dating apps – you were one of them – you should be on both. Of the happily partnered kinky people I know, SPANK, half met their partners in “traditional” spaces (bars, workplaces, mainstream dating apps) while the other half met their partners in kinky spaces (munches, fetish parties, kinky dating apps). And while no one should be meeting anyone in a bar or at parties right now, the more places you advertise online, the likelier you are to line up a compatible partner for when this is all over. And you shouldn’t be surprised – or put off – when someone you meet on KinkD wants to talk about their kinks. When you meet someone via a dating app that brings people together around a shared interest, it’s only natural that your initial conversations revolve around that shared interest. If you were posting ads on Farmers Only or Christian Cafe, your first chats would very 54
likely revolve around, I don’t know, the price of corn or the exact moment you sold your soul to Donald Trump. Whichever kind of app you meet a guy on, you’re going to have to do the same two things – the same work, the same vetting, the same screw diligence – just in a different order. When you meet a guy on Bumble, SPANK, you establish baseline emotional compatibility first and then eventually you have a conversation about sex. With guys you meet on KinkD, you establish baseline sexual compatibility first and eventually get around to determining whether you’re emotionally compatible. And, again, since you could meet someone with whom you are emotionally and sexually compatible on either kind of dating site – mainstream or kinky – you should keep your ads up on both. P.S. Loose condoms come off and loose condoms leak, SPANK, so a guy who uses XXL condoms on a medium dick puts you at greater risk of contracting an STI or having an unplanned pregnancy. And for what? To impress the checkout clerk at CVS? Don’t worry about making him feel bad. Tell him he gets condoms that fit or he finds someone else to fuck. I’ve lived with my girlfriend for over a year now till about a month ago when she moved to the East Coast, so now we’re in a long-distance relationship. I supported her move because she’s following her dream career and we decided to stay together since communication nowadays is pretty easy. But every time I try to text or call, she responds that she’s too busy or exhausted. I could understand if this was once in a while but it’s literally all the time. This has put a strain on our communication. I became irrational with these red flags and I looked up her address and a guy’s name popped up including his phone number. Then I did perhaps the most irrational thing ever and looked up our phone bill and his number is everywhere on her section of the bill. I asked her who this dude is and she states he’s her landlord and employer. That’s not a red flag, but him calling at 1 a.m. when I was working night shifts before she moved is. I confronted her and she became defensive and turned everything back on me. She called me crazy and hurled more than one “fuck you” at me and threatened to call the cops on me. I’ve admitted to my wrongdoing in violating her privacy and I’ve repeatedly asked her to talk about it, but it always turns into a fight. We’ve been together two years and I’ve never met any of her friends or her 20-year-old son. What do you think? I’m Getting Nothing Outta Relationship Except Drama

I think there’s only so much time you should waste on a person who doesn’t have time for you – to say nothing of a person who isn’t particularly kind to you and, after two years, hasn’t integrated you into her life in a meaningful way. I also think you need to ask yourself what’s more likely, IGNORED: Your girlfriend – who can’t take your calls now but could take that guy’s in the middle of the night when you two were living together – is living with and working with a guy she knew before moving away or that your girlfriend is living with and working with and fucking with a guy she moved across the country to be with? I think the latter is far more likely. But even if she’s not fucking him – even if she isn’t holding on to you as a backup or doesn’t want to end things because you pay her phone bill – she doesn’t make time for you. I don’t know why she hasn’t done the right thing and ended it, IGNORED, but that doesn’t mean you can’t do the right thing for yourself and end it.

I expect many of your astute readers will have written to you about this, but here goes anyway: You described the wannafuckmath when arranging a foursome as far more complicated than the wannafuckmath when arranging a threesome. But the wannafuckmath isn’t actually very complicated. For any n-some, the Wannafuck number = n • (n-1). So for the humble twosome, it’s 2 • 1. Two! Just what you’d expect. For a threesome, it’s 6. For a foursome, it’s 12. So a foursome is wannafuckmathematically six times more complicated than a twosome but only twice as complicated as a threesome. Even the rarely seen hundredsome only has a wannafuck number of 9900 – large, perhaps unachievable, but not infinite. Math Is Sexy Today and Yesterday
will seek out attention for extra belly
I was once in a room where at least a hundred people were having sex – in Berlin, naturally – so I have seen the elusive hundredsome with my own eyes. Or the hundred-and-then-some, I should say. (And to be clear: I was a witness, not a participant.) But unlike a threesome or a foursome, a hundredsome isn’t an arranged-in-advance/ by-invitation-only affair. It’s more of a booka-large-enough-space-and-advertise-itextensively-and-they-will-come affair. So paradoxically, hosting a by-invitation-only threesome or foursome – or even a by-invitation-only tensome – where you establish in advance that everyone is attracted to each other may be more difficult to pull off than hosting a Berlin hundredsome.
