Tropical bedbugs are back after disappearing for 60 years: To put expired icing on top of what has already been a pretty crappy year, University of Florida researchers are reporting tropical bedbugs have been found in Brevard County after decades of absence in the state. That might not sound newsworthy until you learn they spread faster than your everyday bedbug, which could cause an infestation in Florida and the rest of the South. Aside from drinking your blood while you sleep, a severe infestation of these bugs can lead to fear, anxiety, depression, sleeplessness and itchy, blistery reactions in some people. I GOT IT WRONG Hate trumped Hillary, and everything I thought I knew about politics was mistaken I underestimated Donald Trump.

Actually, scratch that. I didn’t underestimate the man, who remains every bit the racist narcissist he’s shown himself to be over the last several years, a man who deserves neither your respect nor your well wishes. I did, however, underestimate the tidal wave of white resentment that propelled him into office, the burning desire to blow up the system, to hell with the consequences.

I – an urban, educated, cosmopolitan elite – smugly assumed that there was no way people would actually vote for this buffoon, that everyone could see through his circus act the way I did. I devoured websites and listened to podcasts, all produced by urban, educated, cosmopolitan elites, that confirmed this assumption. And so as I watched results begin to pour in Tuesday night, celebratory Boulevardier cocktail in hand, I was supremely confident of the results; doubly so when I saw the first exit polls, which showed a slightly less-white electorate than 2012.

“It’s over,” I assured a friend. “She’ll win by six.”

She did not win by six.

If this is the grieving process, I’m stuck in Kübler-Ross’ stage 2 – anger. There’s plenty to be angry about: the petulant progressives who wrote in Harambe or Jill Stein; FBI director James Comey, whose eleventh-hour intervention almost certainly tipped the election to Trump; cable news, which normalized Trump and hyperventilated over Hillary Clinton’s emails; the Clinton campaign itself, which never landed on an inspiring message and was entirely ignorant of its many blind spots; the 43 percent of registered voters who couldn’t be bothered to get off their asses; the millions of voters who, though they might not be bigots themselves, looked bigotry in the eye and shrugged.

undemocratic anachronism that gives outsize power to rural whites at the expense of urban minorities – which, for the second of five presidential elections in which I’ve been eligible to vote, handed the Oval Office to the second-place finisher.

I’m also angry at my country, which is somehow less than what I imagined it to be, somehow unable to see through the mountain of bullshit that Trump erected around himself, unable to see through his misogyny or scapegoating of Mexicans and Muslims, unable to see his glaringly empty promises for what they were, unable to recognize that this was a con and they were the marks. I thought we were better than that, smarter than that, more tolerant than that. We are not.

I’m angry at myself, too, because as many years as I’ve spent studying and writing about politics, I didn’t see this coming. I completely misread this election and this electorate. And so did a whole bunch of people who are much much smarter than me. We took Trump’s defeat for granted, and now we’ll pay the price.

I supported Clinton in the Democratic primary, because I thought she’d make a more effective president than Bernie Sanders (still do), because I wanted to see her finally break that glass ceiling after surviving the political meat-grinder for decades (still admire her for that), and because I thought she’d be more electable. Counterfactuals are too easy; there’s no way to know how Bernie would have withstood an onslaught of negative ads or whether the white working-class Midwestern voters who abandoned Clinton would have rallied to the banner of a Jewish socialist from Vermont.

It’s easy, too, to lose perspective: Clinton lost by 1 percentage point or less in Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania; 100,000 votes, total, would have put her in the White House. Moreover, political sci●

tationery obsessions always start out innocently enough. But we’ve also included some basics for anyone who’s looking to jump to the next level or just is in need of some inspiration. his is probably one of the easiest years on record to shop for the music obsessive(s) in your life. The vinyl and boxed-set reissue boom continues unabated all along the spectrum from superstore to cult favorite.

Music books are a wide-open field, not just about superstars, although this year also saw unexpected superstar autobiographies from Bruce Springsteen and Brian Wilson, and some wild and moving music documentaries (Miss Sharon Jones, Gimme Danger). And if none of those quite work for you, just snatch them up a subscription to TIDAL (Kanye trusts it, shouldn’t you?) or maybe even a gift certificate from a LOCAL music retailer (Park Ave CDs, East West, Rock N’ Roll Heaven, Foundation College Park, Uncle Tony’s Donut Shop have all got your back), all of which have dedicated staff waaaaay more wellversed in music than us. (The aforementioned local stores can order any of these items, if they don’t already have it in stock; all prices are approximate.)

Egyptian Lover, Egyptian Lover 1983-1988 (Stones Throw, available as download, 2-CD set or on vinyl, $11.50-$60) Los Angeles electro and hip-hop innovator Egyptian Lover has been an unacknowledged guiding force of rap on the West Coast since the early ’80s, but there’s so much more to his story. EL’s music creates a whole mythos, a whole new world, where the super-smooth yet almost nerdy musician reigns supreme. Listening to these albums, you hear the DNA for so much minimal synth and dance music too.

4. Stevie Nicks, Bella Donna and The Wild Heart (Rhino Records) This year saw deluxe reissues of the first two solo albums from the reigning witch-queen of pop, Stevie Nicks. Stepping out under the not-inconsiderable shadows of Fleetwood Mac’s tangled mythos, Nicks dove headlong into her “ghost nymph” persona (aided by insane amounts of cocaine), but married it to ultra-slick and sleek synth-rock that still sounds weirdly modern today. Songs like “Edge of Seventeen” and “Stand Back” have lost none of their anthemic cyborg thrust.

Hard-Core: Life of My Own, by Harley Flanagan (Feral House, 444 pages, $23.95) Harley Flanagan is the ultimate embodiment of the punk ethos and music, with all the many positives and negatives that implies: an NYC hardcore scenester since childhood, founding member of the infamous and influential CroMags, jiu-jitsu instructor and father. This book is a compulsive page-turner. American hardcore in every sense of the word.

6. Psychic TV, Force the Hand of Chance (Angry Love Productions) Once called a “wrecker of civilization,” artist/ musician/aesthete/agitator Genesis Breyer P-Orridge is this close to becoming a cultural institution: art exhibited in prestigious galleries, papers stored at the Tate Britain, subject of a documentary, hell, they’re even a Marc Jacobs model. But all that doesn’t mean that this early piece of music, newly reissued on vinyl, from the post-Throbbing Gristle band-as-mysticalmovement Psychic TV has mislaid any of its grim and somewhat threatening mystique.

The Incantations of Daniel Johnston, by Ricardo Cavolo and Scott McClanahan (Two Dollar Radio, 101 pages, $17.95) A beautiful, psychedelically illustrated and heartbreakingly moving tribute to the life of American alternative music’s eternally lost boy and one-man Beatles. McClanahan is a fellow son of West Virginia and captures Johnston’s tragic tale perfectly.

hy do we still love cookbooks, when we don’t need them? It’s true that all you need is access to the internet if all you’re looking for is a recipe for Korean fried chicken. But the best cookbooks do more than collect recipes; they engender trust, they teach us basic principles, and much of the time, they’re windows into dazzling other worlds. Brillat-Savarin’s famous aphorism (“Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you what you are”) holds especially true for cookbooks that are personality-driven, like the ones we’ve chosen here, rather than tied to a restaurant (like 2016’s excellent Mozza at Home or Eataly), a dish (tacos, cookies) or a cooking method (like grilling or slow cookers … always with the damn slow cookers). These eight books offer glimpses into wholly unique points of view. 6. Cravings: Recipes for All the Food You Want to Eat, by Chrissy Teigen (Random House, 240 pages) OK, OK, hear me out. I know: Chrissy Teigen, of Sports Illustrated and Twitter fame? But this is truly the perfect book to turn to for potlucks, family gatherings and office parties. Is it basic? Totally.

Is it incredibly useful? Absolutely. Are there some tasty bites to be had? You better believe it.

3. Molly on the Range: Recipes and Stories From an Unlikely Life on a Farm,

by Molly Yeh (Rodale, 304 pages) A Jewish-Chinese Brooklynite with a fondness for junk food (Lunchables, Dunkaroos) is transplanted to a sugar-beet farm on the North DakotaMinnesota border. Hilarity – and a whole new way of looking at life, cooking and eating – ensues in this gloriously inclusive and utterly distinctive book based on the popular blog My Name Is Yeh.

7. Dalí: Les Dîners de Gala, by Salvador Dalí (Taschen, 320 pages) Taschen’s reprint of this most-sought-after classic answered years of fervent prayers from collectors unwilling to pay upward of $350 for even a tattered old copy. Grotesque, erotic, fantastic.

8. Regarding Cocktails, by Sasha Petraske and Georgette Moger-Petraske (Phaidon, 256 pages) The tragically early death of Sasha Petraske, a founder of modern mixology, is hardly softened by this book – it only makes it clear how much more he would have had to say and teach. However, as a last testament (the book was finished by his wife), it’s a gorgeous piece of work and a fascinating look inside a beautiful mind.

4. The Love and Lemons Cookbook: An Appleto-Zucchini Celebration of Impromptu Cooking,

REMAIN IN LIGHT The mystical legacy of Joan of Arc comes to the Bach Festival in an exalting multimedia mashup

T

he mysticism, resolve and militant tenacity of Joan of Arc blazes as ardently as ever, even 600 years after she was consumed alive by flames at the behest of the cruel clergymen who ordered her execution as a heretic. In those six centuries the illiterate teenager who heard voices has inspired paintings and sculptures, books and plays, music and movies.

The medium of film, especially, has done much to rekindle the mythos of the Maid of Orléans, the peasant girl whose steadfast belief in her religious visions led her from the small farming village of Domrémy to the head of an army fighting for her cause.

There are many, but no film has done better justice to what we know about Joan, especially her trial and execution – verbatim transcripts from the trial survive – than Carl Theodor Dreyer’s 1928 silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc. The original cut of the film was lost in a warehouse fire, but another print was discovered in 1981 and immediately acknowledged as a masterpiece. With its extreme close-ups and jarring camera angles, The Passion is a showcase for the French stage actress Renée Maria Falconetti (left) in the title role, in her remarkable single film appearance.

Fast-forward 60 years from Dreyer’s tour de force to 1988: New York-based composer Richard Einhorn happened upon a still from The Passion of Joan of Arc at the Museum of Modern Art and requested a screening of the film. Completely absorbed by Falconetti’s searing performance, he immediately set to work on a narrative choral piece based on Joan and the film. The result was Voices of Light, a 1994 opera-oratorio hybrid and CONTINUED ON PAGE 72

conceivably a soundtrack to Dreyer’s film that poetically dramatizes Joan’s imprisonment, trial and judgment.

Featuring 110 voices from the Bach Festival Choir, 25 orchestra members, and a screen stretching the entire breadth of the chancel around the altar of Knowles Memorial Chapel, the Bach Festival presents two performances of Voices of Light this weekend, with a full screening of The Passion of Joan of Arc in sync with Einhorn’s score.

A composer of opera, song cycles, dance scores, and orchestral, chamber, and film music, Einhorn didn’t intend necessarily to create a soundtrack to the silent film, but rather a “response to the movie that had the same artistic sensibility and integrity that Dreyer brought to it,” he says in a phone interview from his New York City apartment. The composition process involved breaking the film down into 15 scenes; although each movement lasts the length of a scene in the film, the musical narrative has a direction of its own. This is the reason each can be appreciated separately, though the combined live performance makes for a spellbinding experience. From Australia to Europe, and across the United States, it has been performed more than 200 times. This Bach Festival Society production – underwritten by GladdeningLight, a nonprofit that explores the intersection between spirituality and art – will be its Central Florida premiere.

“I feel like Joan is a model for the 21st century,” says GladdeningLight founding director Randall Robertson. “People of all ages should look to her as a genderchallenging, patriarchy-defying historical figure. This is a woman in the 15th century who stood up not only to men but to power, and approached her mission with a powerful sense of purpose and virtue.”

Robertson first experienced the film and score on a GladdeningLight weekend trip to Washington, D.C., in 2014 with colleagues from around the country. Soon after witnessing the performance at the National Cathedral, he contacted Einhorn to discuss the prospect of bringing Voices to Orlando.

The performances will be conducted by Bach Festival artistic director John Sinclair, who studied the score upon Robertson’s proposal and responded enthusiastically in the affirmative.

With a libretto crafted by the composer, consisting of writings by female medieval mystics and excerpts from Joan’s letters (she dictated to a scribe), Voices leans more on emotion than action. “The idea of adding the letters came later in the structuring of the piece,” Einhorn says. “I realized that Joan had to have a special sound, so that 72

everybody would recognize her. That’s when I came up with the idea of having a medieval chant-like sound for her voice.”

Joan is represented by a quartet of female voices of different register, singing in unison. “We don’t know what she sounded like,” Einhorn says, “so rather than make her a soprano or an alto, I made her both, singing in a very simple syllabic style, reflecting Joan’s directness with which she looked at the world and God.”

oices of Light changed Einhorn’s life. “It was really amazing, it never happened before or since,” he reflects. The score caught like wildfire following its 1994 Northampton, Massachusetts, premiere and the largescale Brooklyn Academy of Music follow-up performance in 1995. It’s inspired by medieval music, particularly the motet. This one-syllable-per-note vocal style is “very unusual and very simple, which was a very conscious [choice],” Einhorn says.

Einhorn was also curious about juxtaposing the wispy, unusual sound of the viola da gamba with the medieval chants to create a uniquely spiritual atmosphere.

With our long national election

nightmare over, and an even longer reign of terror about to begin, I’m tempted to find a TARDIS and teleport myself a continent or a century away from Florida 2016.

But if you imagine that post-Edwardian England, setting of a certain celebrated PBS soap opera, would be a safe place to escape raging political debates over gender roles, health care and workers’ rights, Upton Abbey: An Improvised Comedy of English Manors will disabuse you of that notion.

The full-length extemporized production currently playing Rollins College’s Annie Russell Theatre is packed with humor that will appeal to Downton devotees. But as creator-director David Charles shared prior to a dress rehearsal, he knew long before last week’s historic election that the still-relevant issues underlying the show’s World War I setting deserved some deep-dive dramaturgy. “The idea germinated at the end of last year. We’re always looking for shows that can feature our incredibly talented women, and we were looking at a season about the election process and what it is to be a citizen.

It’s also looking at the role of women, an increasing understanding of sexuality, and class warfare – all things that we might be fighting for again.”

That’s why Charles assembled a team of 12 students who spent the summer not just watching episodes of Julian Fellowes’ series, but delving into the rapidly changing foods, fashions and faiths of early-20th-century British nobility. Grace Zottig, a researcher and stage manager, said they used the biography of Lady Almina Carnarvon, fifth countess of Highclere Castle (filming location of Downton Abbey) as a foundation, and used her life to inspire some of the characters. They supplemented that with other references mostly found in “actual books,” as opposed to online searches, that

The choice of the year 1918 (coinciding with Season 2 of Downton Abbey) as a setting was equally deliberate. “It’s at the height of the war,” Charles explains.

“The trench atrocities had become widely known at that point … meanwhile, we sit on this beautiful estate. There’s a juxtaposition that gives us opportunities for comedy, but we try not to be too shy about digging into some of the deeper issues at play as well.”

All this would be rich enough material for a scripted plot, but weaving it into one that is improvised on the spot during every performance – with audience members picking plot points and featured characters through internet voting pre-show and during intermission – sounds nigh impossible.

“We’re all taking a leap of faith,” Charles admits, calling the production an “experiment.” The research helps keep the ad libs from going off the rails: “These characters are really fleshed out. … There’s a structure that helps us, but it’s like a skeleton.”

Charles’ company is able to rise to the challenge with the help of training provided by his Rollins Improv Players, a 13-year-old troupe that performs 30 to 35 times per year. Under his direction, Charles says the college has earned a reputation for educating improvisers. “I was just at an international conference talking about this kind of work, one of a few people invited. It’s certainly unique.” The

backstage technicians must be as sharp as the actors onstage, using a secret system to stay one step ahead of the story and prepare scene changes that unfold effortlessly on each impromptu punchline.

Speaking for all the technical disciplines, Charles says he thinks “they both dread and are tickled by these improv shows, because they know it’s not business as usual.” With 15 “upstairs” characters and 15 “downstairs” characters, and each actor playing one of each and changing between them on the fly, first-time mainstage costume designer Katie Stine faced daunting questions like, “How am I going to get someone from a wheelchair-bound man to a soldier fighting on the front lines in 45 seconds?”

Thirty period costumes could break any budget; luckily Rollins’ costume shop supplied a surplus of not-quite-right remnants as raw materials that Stine repurposed: “I call it a Cinderella story. I take costumes that are similar to what I’m looking for, and completely rework them, which tends to be cheaper.” A favorite piece is a beaded pink evening dress that used to be a “ridiculous” 1960s cocktail dress.

As if Upton Abbey weren’t ambitious enough already, the story will also progress serially from one performance to the next, with decisions made in earlier episodes impacting the finale. “If you come opening [night], and come again for the seventh show, you’re not going to be lost,” Charles concludes. “The hope is that we can appeal both to the one-time viewer who’s just dipping in for a visit, but also by show eight this world is going to be different; characters are going to be changed, secrets will upend relationships.” The rehearsal act I observed left me impressed, so if you’re still missing the Grantham family’s antics, make arrangements to see Upton Abbey now; you can’t binge-watch this one on Netflix at your leisure. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

The timely story of the couple behind the Supreme Court decision to strike down laws against interracial marriage

It also leads to an interesting conversation late in the film in which it’s pointed out that Richard ironically wants to be black, while (to paraphrase) many blacks at this time wish they were white.

Edgerton is superb as Richard, a hardworking, dedicated and loving man who does whatever he can to make his wife happy, even when it endangers them both.

He doesn’t say much, but Edgerton effectively conveys an inner strength that never allows us to doubt the solidarity of the marriage. As Mildred, Negga is similarly quiet, but Mildred is also smarter than Richard, and realizes the press can be an asset in helping them live freely in Virginia, so she makes use of it when it’s advantageous to them. She also pulls the strings in the house; he may be the breadwinner, but Negga’s calm and assured demeanor leaves no doubt that Mildred’s the one making the big decisions.

Nichols specializes in suburban dramas (Take Shelter, Shotgun Stories) that allow the acting and screenplay to carry the load.

To be sure, that’s the case in Loving as well, and it is a solid drama – but you can’t help but wish at least some of it was depicted in a more dynamic and interesting way. film@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

punishment. Rhode Island prizefighter Vinny “the Pazmanian Devil” Pazienza broke his neck in a car accident that left him unable to walk – and all he wanted to do was get right back in the ring. His coach, Kevin Rooney (Aaron Eckhart), helped bring about that miracle within the space of a single year, all the while failing to inform Pazienza that he had the most awkward nickname in sports history.

Writer-director Ben Younger hasn’t made a movie since 2005’s underrated Prime – thus disappointing those of us who were hoping for a prequel, Subprime – but the initial critical response to his return is promising: The Hollywood Reporter notes approvingly that star Miles Teller is at one point seen in a thong, which may be why Rex Reed called the picture “compelling.” (R) The Edge of Seventeen This high-school char-

acter study has drawn positive comparisons to everything from John Hughes to Juno to Fast Times at Ridgemont High – and that’s pretty appropriate, since teenagers are used to having their successes compared to those of old farts they’ve never even heard of. Hailee Steinfeld plays a junior-year misfit who searches for coping strategies when her brother starts sleeping with her best friend. Praising the film for its realism, Indiewire’s David Ehrlich says the story “unfold[s] like a symphony of small humiliations.” No, David: That’s my fucking life.

I’m concerned. Warner Bros. seems to agree, having allowed Rowling for the first time to adapt her own work in the form of Fantastic Beasts, a story that predates Harry Potter’s by some 70 years. The movie was announced as the first installment in a filmic trilogy, but by last month, the number of planned chapters had been upped to five. Gee, if this gravy train keeps on rolling, Rowling is only going to be a thousandaire one of these days. j/k, J.K.!

(PG-13) Gimme Danger If you only know “Search and Destroy” because you heard it in an Audi commercial, this documentary will put you on better footing with folks who got turned on to it by Nike 20 years ago. Learn the complete, unexpurgated story of the seminal Iggy and the Stooges – or at least, as complete and unexpurgated as one can get when dealing with a band that plied its trade long before bringing cameras into a concert hall was totally jake. Animated re-creations and verbal reminiscences by the always-entertaining Iggy himself are said to pick up the slack of sporadic archival footage. Or maybe we’re all being punked, and when we get to the theater, we’ll find out it’s really a doc about Harvey Danger. (NR) Nocturnal Animals Two signs that awards season is in full swing: No. 1, the characters in movies read books; No. 2, Amy Adams is in everything. Here, she plays an art gallery owner who has to reflect on her past when her ex-husband sends her the manuscript to his new novel – an unsettling tale that’s predicated on rape and murder. (Most guys just send a candygram.) Fashion-designer-turneddirector Tom Ford seems to be on less familiar ground then he was for 2009’s A Single Man, but maybe I should reserve judgment until I see what the corpses are wearing. (R)

Considering his choices, Gucci Mane was no stranger to trouble. According to an article on DJBooth.net, Davis was arrested and sent to police custody on no less than 10 separate occasions between 2005 and 2013. His charges ranged from simple possession to aggravated assault.

THE ETERNAL Legendary bass guitarist lays claim to his creative legacy with a live set of the best of Joy Division and New Order

Miami’s pride Jacuzzi Boys (Nov. 6, Will’s Pub) have come a long way from their auspicious punk beginnings.

Now, the kids are made men, Iggy Popendorsed national players who’ve found their groove on one of the most strapping and identifiable sonic signatures out there. It’s next-level garage rock that takes the heart of punk, grooms it with textural sophistication and rolls it out on a more concentrated wavelength. But punks need not sweat. Though those roots have become more latent on their recordings, they’re still very much alive, primary even, in concert. And their brandnew album, Ping Pong ( just released on Nov. 11 on their own new label, Mag Mag Records), injects some new force into their kick.

Speaking of getting made, it looks like openers the Sh-Booms are finally getting some dues and making some moves themselves. The powerhouse Orlando soul crew have just begun working with Limited Fanfare Records & Management (Lil Daggers, Heavy Drag) in Miami for management and Rollo Grady Music (Natural Child, Pujol, Futurebirds) in L.A. for licensing, so their stars appear to be aligning in some significant ways. More on them soon in our big local music issue on Nov. 30.

Also beginning to build up some real street buzz of their own are local goth ragers Autarx, who are a very fresh voice in punk, possibly the freshest in the city right now. Their sound and mien are intriguingly theatrical and crazed, but behind it

Finally, there was Ft. Lauderdale surfpunk band Octo Gato, who are a bunch of goofs. With enough campy nautical motifs to look like a cheap seafood restaurant exploded onstage, they’re almost an SNL skit. Yes, of course, there was a beach ball in play. And their stage presence won’t make you take them any more seriously. But it’s not like this is prog-rock or anything. Fuck that. This is decent party music played with competence and humor.

For their first and only Florida date, 4AD/Glassnote band Daughter (Nov. 9, the Beacham) debuted in Orlando. And apparently, a whole legion of people has been in wait for this because the historical occasion was met with a thirsty and robust reception.

The London act identifies as a folk band, though that heritage is vague because their underpinning is really the kind of folk born only of contemporary indie

abstraction. The result, especially once all their considerable hallmark embellishments come into play, is a stylish brand of drama-pop. There’s a twilit minimalism at its heart that leverages mood and relief.

But when the music strikes, it can be oceanic with swells of guitar, drums and electronics. Add to that the presence and serious-ass lyrics of frontwoman Elena Tonra and things get thick.

Although Daughter’s music is often more atmosphere than resolution, it played effectively in a show with a professional stage production of appropriate lighting and projections that connected the dots and drove it all home. If anything, the band proved the power of monolithic restraint when done with purpose.

A similar gentle-but-big dynamic goes for young support act Vancouver Sleep Clinic, which is the vehicle of Tim Bettinson, an artist not actually from up north but rather Down Under, map be damned. Just as momentous as Daughter’s, this Orlando debut was part of the band’s first tour of North America.

Bettinson may ride the tender frequency in the modern tide of ether-breathing crooners with his fragile, ghostly falsetto, but he’s no window-gazing whisperer.

This guy’s got clear widescreen pop ambition, often streaking the canvas in grand sweeps and scaling crescendos. Though his music is slow, indie-ish bedroom pop at its core, he and his full band render it with impressive scale and color it with modern flourishes of R&B and electronic.

Let’s see. A wealthy blowhard decides he wants to grab himself a young, beautiful woman, and he breaks financial promises made to his impoverished nephew in order to get what he wants. What does this remind us of? Hmmm … anyway, Donizetti’s Don Trump, er, Pasquale is in the humorous, all’s-well-that-ends-well opera buffa tradition – a style that Opera Orlando has proven it’s mastered with its uproarious April mashup of Mozart’s The Impresario and Poulenc’s Les Mamelles de Tiresias. Frankly, after the past week we are feeling more Don Giovanni – specifically, the Commendatore-drags-your-ass-to-hell part – than Don Pasquale, and oddly enough, the reborn opera company presents that very show in March. But in the meantime, let’s yuk it up with this “most luscious of comedies,” starring massively impressive basso buffo Peter Strummer as Pasquale. What the hell, fate has made beggars of us all. – Jessica Bryce Young

Pygmalion Mad Cow Theatre has been through some rough patches in the past month regarding its financial situation and paying its artists, but it has since tried to undergo a makeover by paying everyone it owes by Dec. 1. A lot of people don’t feel comfortable supporting Mad Cow, which is understandable. But if you’d like to contribute to their efforts toward getting those checks out, come see their other makeover involving Eliza Doolittle, Henry Higgins and the cast of Pygmalion for a holiday classic this weekend. This timeless piece from George Bernard Shaw involves the metamorphosis of a Cockney flower girl into a fancy lady, not through the use of Sephora products, but by improving her pronunciation, if you can believe it. Can we make punk gross again? Australia’s Straight Arrows are sure as fuck giving it a try. Dispensing with any of the sonic signifiers of your usual pogo fodder, the Arrows have been trawling the same slimy furrows as bands like White Fence, the Sonics and Thee Headcoats since 2010, touring relentlessly and gaining the notice of go-to filth peddlers like Hozac and Total Punk in the process. They’re currently risking life and limb here in the U.S., showing off songs from their new psyched-out album, Rising. There will be plenty of punk and hardcore bands in the coming weeks, months and (yeah) years who will have plenty to say about the state we’re in, but this Saturday, the Arrows, along with Golden Pelicans, Gino and the Goons, and the Secret Tracers, are going to wallow in negative sickness and the accidental, glorious happiness that comes from hearing loud music in a room full of weirdos. – Matthew Moyer

Psychedelic rock is not a Pink Floyd boxed set as big as a suitcase that retails for around $500, nor is it the pleasing-to-the-ear but still somewhat diluted pop hybrids created by the likes of Of Montreal and Flaming Lips. Psych rock, at its essence, should be underground, ritualistic, a mess of hair, sweat, strange sights and stranger sounds all merging into a LOUD and transcendent whole.

If you think we’re being needlessly difficult and cranky, please accept our cordial invitation to watch two modern masters of neu-avant-psych put on a rare collaborative show for free in an intimate gallery space.

Actually, to call it just a “show” does somewhat of a disservice to the singular skills of Tatsuya Nakatani and Kawabata Makoto. Official living legend and alleged Nobel Prize-shunner Bob Dylan plays the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts tonight, and amazingly, as of press time, tickets were still available. In his more than five decades of stardom, Dylan has explored styles ranging from folk to rock to electric blues to gospel (though lately he’s also been thinkin’ ’bout Alicia Keys). The singer-songwriter who contributed such classics as “The Times They Are a-Changin’,” “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” to the American songbook has been named to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame; has won a Pulitzer, a Golden Globe, an Academy Award and 13 Grammys; and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom (plus, after he finally called Sweden following a two-week silence, the Nobel Prize for literature). Music Mondays: A Fat Wreck FILM

We’ve gotten used to taking music for granted. At least back in the day you had to run to the store and unwrap a jewel case that felt like it was packaged to survive a rocket launch to Andromeda before you were forced to peruse a booklet full of selfcongratulatory liner notes about “how much work we’ve put into this album” and the hairdressers and tour managers they “couldn’t have done it without.” In the click-tolisten era, A Fat Wreck is a reminder of the hard work, disappointment and risk it takes to run a small record label that would eventually have its logo stamped on the back of albums across America. NOFX lead singer Fat Mike and his then-girlfriend Erin Burkett founded Fat Wreck Chords, a place where they could independently sign and nurture like-minded people, in 1990. Now, after a distribution deal with a Sony imprint and Rise Against albums to their name, Fat Wreck Chords – who to this day boast about not being affiliated with the RIAA – seek to make their mark in the arena of puppet-driven rockumentaries. I’m a longtime fan – reader and listener – and part of the 47 percent of white women who did NOT vote for Donald Trump. To say I’m disappointed, horrified, scared and mad about the election is woefully insufficient. I donated $100 to Planned Parenthood this morning because I honestly felt like there was nothing else I could do. That being said, I wanted to share that I had one of the most weirdly charged, hottest and sexiest orgasms. A little buzzed (dealing with those election results) and sad, my boyfriend and I turned to each other for consolation. One thing led to another, and before I knew it, we were fucking as Trump came on the TV to give his acceptance speech. As that orange blowhard spewed more bullshit about being our president, I rode my boyfriend’s big, beautiful dick until I came. It was the perfect way to say, “Fuck this. Now fuck me.” I encourage all your readers to fuck out the stress from this election. Yes, we should donate and volunteer and speak up and protest and vote and not give up hope, but we should also keep doing it and taking care of each other. Because love trumps hate, and fucking trumps … well, I’m not sure what fucking trumps. But it sure makes life better.

Justifiably Unsettled Lass Intensely Emoting It’s important to practice good self-care in the wake of a traumatic event –this election qualifies as a traumatic event – and going by the definition of self-care at GoodTherapy. org, fucking the living shit out of someone qualifies as self-care: “Actions that an individual might take in order to reach optimal physical and mental health … Selfcare [includes] activities that an individual engages in to relax or attain emotional well-being, such as meditating, journaling or visiting a counselor.”

They’re too polite over at GoodTherapy. org to include “fucking the shit out of someone” on their list of examples, JULIE, but what you did on election night – which just so happens to be the exact same thing I did on election night – certainly meets all the criteria.

And if anyone out there who did the same on election night – fucked the shit out of someone – is feeling the least bit guilty, please know that millions of Americans did the exact same thing after 9/11. We used a different term to describe all that post-9/11 fucking: “terror-sex,” which New York magazine defined as “urgent, unguarded, endof-the-world coitus inspired by that day’s sudden jolt of uncertainty and fear.”

I want to thank you for writing, JULIE, and I want to second your recommendation: Sex, partnered or solo, makes life better – and people shouldn’t feel guilty about fucking someone else and/or fucking/jacking/ dildo-ing themselves at this uncertain and fearful moment in our nation’s history. we must donate and volunteer and protest and vote, all while reminding ourselves daily that Hillary Clinton won the popular vote.

And we must commit to defending our friends, neighbors and co-workers who are immigrants (documented or not), Muslims (American-born, immigrants or refugees), people of color, women seeking reproductive health care, trans men and women seeking safety, lesbian and gay men seeking to protect their families, and everyone and everything else Trump has threatened to harm, up to and including the planet we all live on.

But we must make time for joy and pleasure and laughter and friends and food and art and music and sex. During the darkest days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, when Republicans and religious conservatives controlled the federal government and were doing everything in their power to harm the sick and dying, queers organized and protested and volunteered and mourned. We also made music and theater and art. We took care of each other, and we danced and loved and fucked. Embracing joy and art and sex in the face of fear and uncertainty made us feel better – it kept us sane – and it had the added benefit of driving our enemies crazy. They couldn’t understand how we could be anything but miserable, given the challenges we faced – their greed, their indifference, their bigotry – but we created and experienced joy despite their hatred and despite this awful disease. We turned to each other – we turned to our lovers and friends and sometimes strangers – and said, “Fuck them. Now fuck me.”

We didn’t eradicate HIV/AIDS, the disease that was sickening us then, but we fought it to a standstill and we may defeat it yet.

The disease that now sickens our nation is different. We may never eradicate racism and sexism and hatred. But fight it we will.

And don’t listen to anyone who tells you that music and dance and art and sex and joy are a distraction from the fight. They are a part of the fight.

My boyfriend is undocumented. His sister married a U.S. citizen and may receive a green card. We had hoped to someday do the same. But next year, the extreme right will control all three branches of the federal government. Deportation will surely come for my boyfriend. Additionally, we’re a gay couple, and Donald Trump has pledged to repeal marriage equality, if not ban it outright. So if we were to marry now, the timing would look suspicious.

And even if we did marry, that marriage is likely to be invalidated in the coming years. Is it still worth it to try? What do I do if the government takes away the love of my life?

“There is no realistic possibility that anyone’s marriage will be invalidated,” says Shannon Minter, legal director for the National Center for Lesbian Rights, which has taken marriage-rights cases to the U.S. Supreme Court (and won). “The law is very strong that if a marriage is valid when entered, it cannot be invalidated by any subsequent change in the law. So people who are already married should not be concerned that their marriage can be taken away.”

And Minter says the court is unlikely to overturn Obergefell, the decision that legalized same-sex marriage across the country.

“The doctrine of stare decisis – which means that courts generally will respect and follow their own prior rulings – is also very strong, and the Supreme Court very rarely overturns an important constitutional ruling so soon after issuing it,” says Minter. “Even the appointment of an anti-marriage-equality justice to replace Justice Scalia would not jeopardize the Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling on marriage equality, and the great majority of Americans still strongly support the freedom of same-sex couples to marry.”
