IN MEMORIAM: THE ORLANDO 49 Every week between now and the one-year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shootings, Orlando Weekly will profile a person killed on June 12, 2016. This week: Anthony Luis Laureano Disla Anthony Laureano Disla was the type of performer who could charm you in a suit or in a dress. The 25-yearold native of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, was a talented dancer who liked to wear suspenders and fedoras when he danced to mambo, salsa and ballroom. But when he performed in drag as Alanis Laurell, he preferred blonde wigs and shiny ensembles as he lip-synced to Olga Tañon and Jennifer Lopez. The Orlando Sentinel reports Laureano Disla had studied at Universidad Del Sagrado Corazon on the island before coming to Orlando about three years ago to focus on his career as a dancer and choreographer. He wasn’t performing at the gay nightclub Pulse on June 12, but he was there that night to party with his friends when the shooting

started. Laureano Disla was one of 49 people killed by the lone gunman. After his death, Cindy J. Ross D’Austin posted a photo on Facebook showing D’Austin and Laureano Disla in matching pink drag costumes. “This is not a goodbye but a see you later,” the performer wrote. “You know more than anyone how much we loved you.” Another friend, Jamesphyll Pinales Gonzalez, said Laureano Disla had asked him to move from Puerto Rico to Orlando to live with him. “He was one of the most loved people in this world,” Pinales Gonzalez wrote online. “Everyone had something to do with him. His circle of friends was infinite.” Laureano Disla’s mother, Olga Disla, says her son will always be dancing in her heart and in the hearts of others. “I miss your smile, to hear your lips call me ‘mami,’” Disla wrote on Facebook. “Now I treasure much more your memories and my love for you because that love conquers death. You’re still alive in my heart and in my mind. … My faith tells me that we’ll meet again, in a place where there will be no more crying or pain, in a new world. Rick Singh sues PACs for ‘smear campaign’ during election:

Orange County Property Appraiser Rick Singh is suing political action committees and their anonymous supporters for running a “smear campaign” against him during the 2016 election. The libel suit says two PACs and their anonymous financial backers acted maliciously when they falsely accused Singh in mailers and television ads of changing his first name to hide a federal lawsuit, financial debt and a felony arrest, among other things. Singh’s lawyers estimate the PACs spent about $3.4 million in dark money to discredit the incumbent before he was re-elected. The property appraiser and his lawyers wouldn’t name any names, but it’s no secret that Singh has earned the ire of local theme parks. The parks have sued Singh because they say he’s appraised them higher than the office has in the past. In just two years, Disney’s tax bill jumped from $84.5 million to $102.6 million, while Universal’s taxes went from $148.6 million to $297 million.

Pulse owner will unveil plans for permanent memorial this week:

Barbara Poma, the owner of the gay nightclub Pulse, will reveal plans for a permanent memorial at the site where a gunman killed 49 people during “Latin Night” last June. Poma’s organization, the OnePULSE Foundation, says on its website that a fund will be established to “support the construction and maintenance of the memorial, community grants to care for the survivors and victims’ families, endowed scholarships for each of the 49 angels and ultimately a museum showcasing the historic artifacts and stories from the event.” Back in December, Poma was in talks with city leaders to sell the Orlando club, but ultimately backed out of the deal, saying she couldn’t walk away from a space that means so much to her family and community.

SpaceX launches first classified mission for the U.S. military from Florida:

The company’s Falcon 9 rocket launched a satellite for the National Reconnaissance Office this week from Cape Canaveral’s Kennedy Space Center. The federal agency manages defense satellites in space, and the payload for Monday’s launch is suspected to be a data relay satellite.

Florida wildlife officials search for loose monkey in Apopka:

A rhesus macaque monkey was spotted in an Apopka neighborhood last week and as of press time on Monday, has not been found. Florida Fish and Wildlife officers say the monkey could be a pet, but it’s more likely to be a wild animal from the colony of rhesus macaques that live in Silver Springs State Park in Ocala. ‘A LOT OF PEOPLE WILL SUFFER’ Trump administration considers removing protected status of Haitian refugees BY MON IVETTE COR D EI R O

ore than 500 Haitian refugees who work at Walt Disney World could be sent back to their country if the Trump administration ends temporary protections for about 50,000 Haitians living in the U.S. Local unions and workers rallied outside the Disney gates on Wednesday, asking President Donald Trump to renew protections for the Haitian cast members who serve as the backbone of the Central Florida’s tourism industry. “They make the beds, serve the food, prepare meals in the kitchen, keep the parks clean,” says Jeremy Cruz-Haicken, president of Unite Here Local 737. “We only know the number for Disney, but there are thousands of workers in the tourism industry that would be directly affected. That also includes spouses, children, siblings. They could lose their homes. They could be deported. It’s a looming disaster.” In an April 10 memo to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, James McCament, acting director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said that “conditions in Haiti no longer support its designation” for temporary protected status for refugees. The Obama administration granted Haitians this status after the devastating 2010 earthquake in the Caribbean country, which killed about 220,000 people and left 1.5 million homeless. Haiti is still dealing with hunger and housing crises, as well as a cholera outbreak. A February 2017 report from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says that 55,000 Haitians are still living in camp shelters and predicts that more than 750,000 will require food assistance in 2017. If the Trump administration does not renew this special immigration status, it will expire on July 22. Last year, Trump

told Haitian voters during a campaign stop that he wanted to “be your greatest champion.” Disney workers were also calling on company CEO Bob Iger, who sits on Trump’s economic advisory council, to ask the president to extend protections. Disney released a statement saying it supports extending immigration protections for Haitians. “Given the current situation in Haiti, we support efforts to extend the Temporary Protected Status for Haitian nationals,” the company says. “The more than 500 cast members who are currently part of this program have been and are an important part of our Walt Disney World workforce in Central Florida.”

Last year, Trump told Haitian voters that he wanted to “be your greatest champion.” Cecilia Luis, who works at Disney as a housekeeper, says she helps support her six children by sending cash remittances back to Haiti that help them buy food. If she has to go back to the suffering country, she knows it will be hard to find a job to help her family. “I’m OK, but I know a lot of people here that don’t eat or sleep because they’re worried they’ll be sent back to Haiti,” she says in Spanish. “It’s not as easy to leave when you’re sending money to your family to help them survive. ing enhancements (such as mandatory minimum sentences) whenever possible and regardless of circumstances,” the response says. “In those cases, as here, the chief executive’s venerable and modest reassignment authority – an authority regulated by statute and subject to judicial review – can serve as a useful check on the exercise of prosecutorial power.” Scott removed Ayala from 23 cases after she announced she wouldn’t pursue the death penalty for murder suspect Markeith Loyd, who is accused of killing his pregnant ex-girlfriend Sade Dixon and Orlando Police Lt. Debra Clayton. The governor is being supported in the lawsuit filed in state court by the Republican-led Florida House of Representatives, the Florida Prosecuting Attorneys Association and other victims’ families. Republicans in the House and Senate have proposed cutting the budget for Ayala’s office. On her end, Ayala has said Scott doesn’t have the authority to reassign the capital cases because prosecutors can choose to seek the death penalty. Ayala is being supported in court by Democratic lawmakers, former prosecutors and Florida Supreme Court justices, social justice organizations and homicide victims’ families.

Rick Scott hit back at OrangeOsceola State Attorney Aramis Ayala in court this week, saying he did not violate Florida’s constitution when he removed Ayala from 23 murder cases after she said she wouldn’t pursue the death penalty during her term. The response, filed by Attorney General Pam Bondi in the Florida Supreme Court, says that despite Ayala’s claims that the governor does not have the authority to remove her from cases, she did ask him to reassign another prosecutor to a case on six occasions. “The Governor’s orders have the purpose and effect of ensuring rather than impeding the exercise of prosecutorial discretion,” the brief says. “Her decision ultimately reflects her personal beliefs rather than the law of this State, appropriately applied on a case-by-case basis.” Bondi and Scott say in their response that the “extraordinary constitutional authority” Ayala asserts would not only apply to death-penalty cases, but also to other crimes that prosecutors don’t agree with. “Some locally elected prosecutors may commit to always pursuing certain charges (like particular drug possession charges) or severe sentenc-

through two different layers of security, I’m in. The rules for this event are a little different than one might expect. For one thing, I’m not allowed to take in a big bag with me, nor am I allowed to bring any kind of recording equipment. But I also cannot bring my iPad into the show to take notes; it’s been determined that the lights from all the journalists’ equipment will be too distracting. So, in a mad scramble on the morning of the event, I found a small bag with just enough room for a pad of paper and my favorite fountain pen, a back-up pen, and several ink cartridges. As soon as I’m through security, I’m met by a uniformed server who offers me a glass of champagne and an hors d’oeuvre. I get out of the sun and walk into the air-conditioned foyer, where most everyone has retreated. Soon, I’m spotting lots of wellknown liberal writers and humorists. Lizz Winstead. Van Jones. Jonathan Capehart. But it’s when Ashley Nicole Black, one of Sam Bee’s correspondents, walks within a foot of me that I take notice. I give her a big smile, and before I can stop myself, I do the bowing motion made famous by Garth and Wayne in Wayne’s World: “I’m not worthy!” She looks embarrassed. I tell myself to snap out of it. I’ve earned my right to be here, although like a lot of women I know, I still struggle with feeling like a fraud. My invitation to cover this event came because I’ve just completed a big profile of Sam Bee and Jo Miller for the May print issue of Marie Claire. I had also interviewed Bee in January 2016 for The Guardian, before Full Frontal debuted, before anyone knew how strong a chord the show would strike with the American public. Since its debut, Full Frontal’s ratings have gone up 175 percent, and ratings since the election have risen more sharply than Bee’s male cohorts at their various late-night gigs. An usher wearing a black T-shirt that says FREE PRESS shows me to my seat. Up on the empty stage, stage right, there are eight Ionian columns with music equipment in front of them, and on stage left, a podium with the presidential seal, in front of a dozen U.S. flags and another group of columns. The show begins with a video and the crowd bursts into wild applause as they recognize Allison Janney back in her role as The West Wing White House Press Secretary C.J. Cregg. Cregg is dealing with the collection of media that have been given credentials by the Trump White House, and the jokes are coming so fast that I have a momentary sense of panic as I realize that there is no way in hell I’m going

he annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner is often referred to as “nerd prom.” All those reporters, used to rocking whatever sensible clothes and haircuts let them get the job done with minimum fuss, all suddenly dressed up in formal attire. If the WHCD is nerd prom, I’m not sure what to call this, the brainchild of Full Frontal host Samantha Bee and her executive producer/showrunner, Jo Miller, but here we all are, standing in line in our requested “cocktail” attire, waiting to be checked in to the “Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner,” a river of jeweltoned dresses shining in the unforgiving sun. From where I stand, I can see the tented red-carpet area. Behind me, a woman dressed in a long evening dress is wearing diamonds, while in front of me, two attractive men are sporting tuxedoes. I’m glad I decided to buy a new outfit for this gig: I chose a 1950s-style swing dress with a petticoat underneath so full I resemble an upside-down margarita glass. As the sweat drips down my neck and begins to sting, I realize there must be nickel in the costume rhinestones around my neck, in my ears, and around my wrist. I’m breaking out in a rash. I’m going to need to ditch the jewelry as soon as possible. But all around me, despite the fact that it’s over 90 degrees and no one is going to be let in early, everyone is in a fantastic mood. Just a couple of blocks away, a large crowd has gathered for the march to defend the environment, so the city is full of protest signs that ask the president to consider the earth before he makes any more of his notoriously stupid decisions. The president isn’t in town. He should be at the official White House Correspondents’ Dinner, an annual fundraising gala at which the press roasts the president and – usually – the president demonstrates his sense of humor by mocking them back. But not this guy. In January, even before Trump announced that he wasn’t going to attend the official correspondents’ dinner, Bee announced her counter-programming event, a chance to roast this thin-skinned president who cannot take a joke. And, because the past few years have been bad for journalists around the world in terms of being attacked, the proceeds of Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner will go to benefit the Committee to Protect Journalists. (At the end of the night, Bee announced that the dinner had raised $200,000 for the CPJ.) The line moves, and, after passing orlandoweekly.com

to be able to write them down in real time. Cregg looks into the crowd of “reporters” waiting to ask her a question and chooses a young man who appears to be a teenager: “You’re 18 and wearing your father’s suit. You’re obviously from Breitbart.” “Doesn’t having a female host for this event demonstrate a clear anti-white male bias?” the kid asks. Cregg responds: “Absolutely not. Sam Bee doesn’t have anything against white guys. She just can’t tell you apart and thinks you all know one another.” (I get the context of the joke, which is Trump’s thinking that White House correspondent April Ryan knows all of the members of the Congressional Black Caucus. But I also flash back to a conversation I had just a few weeks ago. During a general discussion of an article I’d just written about the use of “they” as a singular pronoun when gender isn’t known, an older man called that “a load of PC crap.” I suggested we change the subject. “We can change the subject,” he said angrily, “but I’m telling you right now. The most persecuted people in America right now are white men.”)

take-no-prisoners savagery: “The maker of ‘American greatness again’ ran away from the Vietnam War, he ran away from two Republican debates, and now he’s run away from the Correspondents’ Dinner. I guess we know why he wears those lumpy, illfitting, old man pants: It’s because he’s constantly shitting himself.” But Trump isn’t the only one getting roasted. Press secretary Sean Spicer, CNN chief Jeff Zucker, Vice President Mike Pence and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos all get theirs, too. Bee has been front and center about holding white women accountable for Trump’s election. The majority of white women voted for Trump, a number that embarrasses the hell out of me. “I don’t want to hear a goddamn word about black voter turnout – how many times do we expect black people to build our country for us?” she said the night after the election, before telling white women that they had a tremendous amount of karma to make up for in the following four years. The other common feeling in the crowd is that we’re as angry as she is. She’s pissed that we’re watching our country burn down around our ears, and so are we.

Doll, you make them feel so small And they love it! – “Boys Wanna Be Her,” Peaches

he show kicks off when Peaches comes out with her band, along with a violin player, and they burst into a kick-ass rendition of “Boys Wanna Be Her,” the theme song to Full Frontal. When they finish playing, Sam Bee strides out onto the stage, looking smashing in a white pantsuit. The entire crowd stands up in a spontaneous ovation that goes on and on. For a moment, it looks like Bee is going to cry out of embarrassment that she is being hailed as a conquering heroine. She sort of shyly admits that we are the “largest crowd” she has ever played in front of, and my brain does a double-take realizing that while she may be used to her show being beamed into millions of homes, she’s not used to performing in front of a live audience of thousands. And then, for the next 90 minutes of taping, everyone in the room is in heaven. Bee’s delivery of jokes is rapid-fire, and half the problem with laughing too hard at one joke is that she’s halfway into the delivery of the next before you start listening again. While comedians are trained not to step on their own lines, it’s obvious that she was aware that if she were to wait until the laughter stopped after each of her jokes, we would be here until midnight, and she knew that the show was being taped for a one-hour showing on TBS later that night. She rips into Trump with her trademark

he popular narrative is that it was a suddenly discovered “white working class” who put Trump in power (although the complications to that narrative – such as all the wealthy people in the beach communities in Florida who also voted for Trump – are rarely mentioned). This poorly educated walking pus-sac of fragile ego somehow got elected president by telling disaffected white people that the reason they’ve been left behind has something to do with “big government.” But “big government” provides OSHA inspectors who work to keep workers safe. Big government provides food inspectors to prevent fatal E. coli outbreaks. Big government provides for the maintenance of infrastructure,

so bridges don’t collapse while you’re driving across them. Trump also convinced white working folks that the reason they don’t have jobs is because immigrants took them. Never mind that every white person living in the United States comes from an immigrant family, or that Trump has been married to two immigrants. Never mind when immigrants staged “A Day Without Immigrants,” it led to the closures of businesses that couldn’t function without their labor – work that white workers are unwilling to do. What I hear discussed all night at Bee’s Not the White House Correspondents’ Dinner is a question: Where are we in this narrative? What about people who want to extend rights to everyone to share in the promise of America, who feel badly betrayed by the election of Trump, who want a government more focused on helping all than hurting some? So where are the strong? And who are the trusted? And where is the harmony? Sweet harmony. – “(What’s So Funny ’Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding,” Elvis Costello & the Attractions

ne thing that I received from the producers that I wasn’t expecting was an invitation to the exclusive afterparty; only a fraction of the crowd who were at the Not the White House Correspondents Dinner are here. The swank party is being paid for by TBS, and the event is at the W Hotel, across the street from the White House and overlooking the Washington Monument. It’s an open bar, but I can’t drink due to migraine medication I take, so I’m swilling gallons of club soda, trying to stay hydrated. The musical guest for the evening is Elvis Costello, and when the small group I’m hanging out with get word that he will be

performing in about 20 minutes, we go and claim space by the stage and wait. All of us are around the same age – we would have all been freshmen in college during the early 1980s, peak Elvis Costello – and we know all the words to all the songs. When Costello and his backing band, the Imposters, come out, it’s magic. They tear through the first 30-minute set, which includes a sweet version of “Every Day I Write the Book.” It ends right before 10 p.m., when all of the televisions in the bars tune in to the TBS broadcast of the show, and we all re-watch it, laughing again at the same jokes we howled at the first time. Costello is set to take the stage to play his second set at 11:20, and again, we go into the small room and take our places by the stage. Costello plays the opening chords to “Pump It Up” and now we’re all jumping up and down like pogo sticks, trying not to bump into one another but unable to keep still. The last notes of “Pump It Up” die, and the band segues into “(What’s So Funny ’Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding?” The crowd is singing, and we’re loud. Each time he gets to the essential question, he quiets his voice for us to take over. We’re not even making an effort to sing anymore. We’re shouting: WHAT’S SO FUNNY ABOUT PEACE, LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING? We’re not singing this song as a joke or ironically. Some of us are fighting back tears. Hash House A Go Go Hash House is centrally located in the Tourist District of I-Drive, but packs a punch that’s definitely local-worthy, with gargantuan portions of home-cooked goodness. They certainly don’t hide their love for the farm here – there is a damn tractor right when you walk in after all – but they manage to do it without coming across as tacky, which is so often the case with Southern-style restaurants. (Lookin’ at you, Cracker Barrel.) You many think that because Hash House is in the heart of the Tourist District it’s for vacationers and conventioneers. But we have to admit, with its big ass pancakes and oversized EVERYTHING (well, almost everything), it should be on the top of your to-do list when you’ve got

out-of-towners to entertain. Hash House’s extensive bar menu and easy-parking make it a great choice for Orlando locals looking for an above-average brunch experience on the south side. And it certainly is the optimal brunch spot to get your day of shopping and attractions off to a great start. The aforementioned full liquor bar at Hash House boasts an extensive and creative drink menu. First and foremost, the Huckleberry Sin is not to be overlooked. This mixture of homemade lemonade with huckleberry vodka is a refreshing break from the usual brunch libations. They keep the unique booze coming with a deliciously sweet Spiked Kiwi Watermelon Lemonade. And while a 25 oz. Budweiser

in a brown bag might not be as “flavorful” as some of their other concoctions, it certainly is funny. But if you’re more of a mimosas and Bloody Mary kind of bruncher, Hash House slings quite a few interesting selections of both. The Texas Bloody Martini throws in Tito’s Handmade Vodka for the old shaken and stirred treatment and is garnished to perfection with jalapeño-stuffed olives, baby gherkins, blue lake green beans and lemon. Pinkies up for that one. Perhaps you’re leaning more towards a mimosa, and that’s more than OK at Hash House. They’ve got a large menu of juices to choose from, but the shining stars here are the Specialty Mimosas. Taking influence from the idyllic island-life, their

This mighty combination of bacon, mozzarella, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes and fried chicken gets drowned in a chipotle cream that you just want to dip damn near everything into. Overall, the menu takes home-cooked favorites and amplifies them to 11. Hash House is here to please with traditional dishes, but they always give you something extra, a unique twist added to every recipe. Just look at their French Toast – griddled french toast that takes a dip in banana cinnamon cream and comes with pecan maple syrup. It could’ve been simple, but that’s not the Hash House way. And that brings us to the pricing. Most

orders run between $8-$19, and while $19 may seem like a lot for a brunch plate, it’s almost as if the more you pay, the bigger your plate will be. You can totally get away with sharing portions, as these dish sizes are seriously unbelievable. So prices are proportionate to serving size. If you have not yet made it to this “attraction” of a breakfast joint, it is definitely worth the trip. These massive portions of creatively traditional fair, along with a full liquor bar of complimentary beverages, might just make Hash House your next brunch mainstay.

didn’t have this cold when I decided to Remix the classic Penicillin cocktail this month. But acquiring it certainly made the decision a welcome one. Calling the Penicillin a classic cocktail might seem a stretch; it was first mixed by Milk + Honey bartender Sam Ross in 2005, so it doesn’t have the decades of history behind it that most Remix subjects do. But it isn’t a misnomer. The Penicillin has spread so widely in its dozen years that it’s achieved, shall we say, “new classic” status, and I have no doubt it will live as long as the Sazerac. Like the Sazerac, the Penicillin is a medicinal elixir – with its scotch whisky base cradled in a honey-lemon-ginger mixture, it’s practically a home remedy. But the float of peaty Islay single-malt across the top takes the drink into more sophisticated territory.

As I’ve admitted in the past, I’m not much of a scotch fan, but I like that smokiness, and the citrus and honey appealed to my sore throat and congested chest. So I did a few simple swaps, trading oakaged tequila and also-smoky mezcal for the whiskeys, grapefruit for the lemon, and fresh ginger for the syrup Ross calls for. Remember that canned or bottled fruit juice is anathema to a well-made cocktail; use bright, fresh grapefruit juice or don’t bother making the drink at all. As for the tequila, quality should be somewhere in the middle – don’t waste a fine añejo by mixing it with all these other flavors, but a raw blanco will make for a mighty flat drink, so use a reposado. And since the mezcal, small as the amount is, is mostly responsible for the aromatic experience, use the best you can afford. jyoung@orlandoweekly.com

First, make the syrup: Combine a cup of honey, a cup of water, and a 6-inch piece of ginger, thinly sliced, in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for five minutes; strain and allow to cool overnight. Combine blended scotch, lemon juice and syrup in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into a rocks glass with one large piece of ice. Top with single-malt scotch.

Vietnamese fare comes to Maitland with this second outpost of the Lake Mary original iPho. Same goes for their signature pho – the broth veers toward the sweeter side, but it’s hearty and can be made heartier with the addition of oxtail. Bracing beef and pork noodle soup with lemongrass is a cold-sufferer’s delight. Don’t overlook their clay pots, and ask for the banh mi menu if you’re not handed one. umanity is still the most satisfying film ingredient, and The Dinner serves up plenty, plus a side of morality and a palate cleanser of social commentary. Written and directed by Oren Moverman (The Messenger, Time Out of Mind), this is the third film adaptation of Herman Koch’s 2009 Dutch novel, and the first in English. Yet despite the title and some clunky “chapter headings” that artificially divide the film into “aperitif,” “appetizer,” “main course,” etc., the film is not really about the meal. Instead, it concerns a moral dilemma that two estranged brothers and their wives face following an unspeakable crime committed by their children. Do they confess to the crime, which was captured on video, or “leave the wound alone,” as one character argues? It’s a choice between condemnation and damnation, Jean Valjean might say. Steve Coogan (Philomena, The Trip) plays Paul, a history teacher who feels the weight of both current and past worlds on his shoulders. Though that weight is mostly imagined thanks to his own psycho-

Colossal

BY ST EVE SCHNEID ER OPENING THIS WEEK: Colossal Sometimes a movie falls prey to a bit

of redundancy in the characterization department. Take for example Colossal, in which Anne Hathaway’s character is established as an alcoholic unemployed writer. Yeah, you know what? I think any one of those three pretty much tells the same story. But I’m willing to forgive this film any of its potential excesses, just because its premise is so gosh-darn wacky: As she attempts to put her life back together, Hathaway’s heroine discovers that she may unwittingly control the movements of a giant, Godzilla-like monster that keeps attacking South Korea. Give yourself 10 points if you’re perceiving some sort of metaphor here – especially when an enormous robot shows up that may be tied to another challenge in her personal path forward. Which means that what we’ve got going on is apparently a kind of weird-ass cross between Rachel Getting Married and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla. In short, the kind of project that’s so breezily unconventional you can’t believe it made it out of a pitch meeting. And there’s something about that that just appeals to me as an alcoholic. I mean an unemployed person. I mean a writer. (R)

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 The entire movie-

going world wants to know if the second Guardians picture could possibly equal the game-changing original. They want to know if it’s as funny. As exciting. As suggestive of a George Lucas who still functions as a human being. Personally, I have a slightly more specific criterion for predicting if a Marvel movie will set the world on fire: How closely does it align with the recorded works of Monster Magnet? I’m convinced Deadpool was such a breakout hit because it featured the character Negasonic Teenage Warhead, who was introduced in the comics as a tribute to the song of the same name on the Magnet’s 1995 masterpiece Dopes to Infinity. By that standard, prospects are strong for Guardians, which includes the screen debut of Ego, the Living Planet – a Marvel Comics mainstay who inspired an instrumental on the very same album. As an extra insurance policy, Ego is played by Kurt Russell, thus satisfying one of my other litmus tests for a flick’s potential: How much does it have in common with Escape From New York? I’m looking for this latest outing to usher in a richly successful new era in event movies, one that should last a good long time. Because let’s face it, there are 10 more songs on Dopes to Infinity that are just waiting to be mined for references. King of Mars, anyone? (PG-13) orlandoweekly.com

1992 Let’s Knife album was released in the States by Virgin Records. Previous to that, in 1989, tribute album Every Band Has a Shonen Knife Who Loves Them was released: a grand meta project wherein 23 underground bands (L7, Lunachicks, Redd Kross) tried their hand at the Shonen Beloved Japanese cult band and alt-rock influencers Knife songbook. This promising bill is the case of a couple of seasoned and well-credentialed ensemble guys who are ready to emerge on their own as solo artists. And both were making Orlando debuts. Sinkane, the vehicle for New Yorkbased musician Ahmed Gallab ( just added to this year’s lineup for the ever-dope Afropunk Festival), have actually been at it for quite a while. Besides releasing as Sinkane since 2007, Gallab is the leader of the star-studded William Onyeabor tribute act the Atomic Bomb! Band and has been a session player for indie heavyweights like Of Montreal, Yeasayer and Caribou. But the latest Sinkane album, Life and Livin’ It, is an extraordinary sharpening of vision and one of this year’s best releases. Sinkane’s music has long been a wildly pan-genre thing. But lately, they’re dialed in to a deep, rich brew of Afrobeat, soul, blues, desert blues, funk, psych and pop. Though that still sounds like a lot, it’s all synthesized so well and executed with such élan that Sinkane are a seamless machine of velvet and groove. On stage, Gallab’s lush six-piece ensemble – all of whom contributed vocals – took creamy ’70s language and an unmistakably African pulse and gave it all a modern indie thrust that had the room moving and swooning by set’s end. If any work could break Sinkane to the next level, Life and Livin’ It is it. The claim to fame for opener Eric Slick is as a member of Dr. Dog. He, however, is now stepping to the fore for himself with a debut solo LP (Palisades) that was released

just two days before this show. From both that album and this performance, it’s clear that the drummer’s own musical dreams come in full color and dimension. The fact that it all bears little resemblance to Dr. Dog shouldn’t be a concern to anyone but hippies. Far less loopy than that band, Slick’s own music is interesting and prismatic. His disarming blend of musing indie rock and psych-pop camouflages the onset of frequent sonic swells of texture and muscle, an aspect that was punctuated by a strong, affable show by his very finished live band. With a start like this, the guy usually behind the kit is already making a strong case for leading man.

gentrified preps selling out the big rooms. As such, they aren’t the most finished thing around, but they keep the soul, grit and truth in the tradition. Opening were the Prestage Brothers, actual brothers from South Florida with lots of local ties and cred. Musically, I know the siblings pretty well individually. Jon, a former Orlando scene fixture, ran in certified circles for years in local bands like So Help Me Rifle and Basements of Florida. And Ben is one of Florida’s most eminent, and simply best, one-man bands and bluesmen. But of what they do together, I know not even a note. It’s nothing if not an intriguing prospect, though. Ben was already a high-functioning one-man band on his own. The Prestage Brothers’ arrangement, however, takes the ingenuity and economy of that full-body, multi-tasking setup, then doubles and harmonizes it. Ben handles a guitar and foot drums like usual, but now Jon rides shotgun handling six-string bass, cymbals on foot and backing vocals. Between them, they man a full drum kit with just their feet. It’s like a symphonic version of the one-man band aesthetic, and truly something to behold. If you’re one of the many Ben Prestage fans, then the Prestage Brothers will be like Christmas for you. That signature swamp blues sound is as in effect as it ever was, only fleshed out with some country and soul. But sonically, it’s a deluxe expansion of that honored, porch-shaking vision – faithful but more – that brought this house down. They’ll be releasing their new album soon, so be on the look.

The first 100 days of a new administration, although enjoyable to some, may have inspired a faction of Americans to entertain the idea of embarking on a time-traveling expedition back to a less tumultuous time. Luckily for them, the Strictly Strange Tour, headed by Strange Records founder and rhyme-spitting Kansas City native Aaron Dontez Yates, better known as Tech N9ne, strolls into Orange Avenue’s Venue 578 this week with a horrorcore demeanor that carries the delicious scent of the late ’90s. Tech, in collaboration with the entire in-house lineup of Strange Records, including tourmates Brotha Lynch Hung, Krizz Kaliko, Stevie Stone and Ces Cru, released a 21-track compilation called Dominion back on April 7 that’s well worth a listen. Being a torchbearer for any sort of musical tradition is full of potential pitfalls, not least among them being perceived as a humorless bore or a museum piece yourself. Stuart – a close confidante of Johnny Cash toward the end of the great man’s life – is like the Lenny Kaye of country music, an archivist and historian working from the inside, preserving the traditions of the music he loves while simultaneously adding his own voice and songs to this sonic legacy. Stuart is currently touring behind new album Way Out West, a windswept, hazy homage to the sounds of the West Coast, be it ’60s Laurel Canyon rock or the “cosmic" country of Gram Parsons. Finding new forms of expression in old ways, Stuart proves that the past doesn’t always have to be a straitjacket. While the idea of a day celebrating Mexican-American heritage is fine and dandy with us, May 5 has been usurped by fratty white kids looking for an excuse to get drunk, wear sombreros and fake mustaches, and somehow get a pass for celebrating racism. But we do love a party. So while the Basic Beckys and Brads pose for some selfies that will embarrass their grandchildren at certain downtown venues, we’ll be up on Mills Avenue for this outdoor rager that combines three local powerhouses – the Sh-Booms, the Woolly Bushmen and the Palmettes – with Gringo Star, the cult Atlanta psych-garage band with an uncannily accurate name. Certain rivalries are never truly settled: Star Wars vs. Star Trek, nature vs. nurture, good vs. evil and, of course, cake vs. pie. Arguments pitting flaky crusts against buttercream have ruined at least two birthday parties we know of and sparked friendship-destroying barguments. We can’t fault the passion behind the fury: Too many office birthday parties and PTA meetings have been tainted by mediocre grocery store sheet cakes, while novice attempts at pie crusts leave a soggy mess on our plates and in our hearts. But this week, Team Pie reigns supreme at the American Pie Council National Pie Championships. Sweet and savory pastries compete in Amateur, Professional and Commercial divisions, with “Best in Show” awards for pies that really take the … well, you know. Running of the Chihuahuas EVENTS

Sunday Funday usually feels kind of fuzzy, but this time it’s for a hell of a more interesting, yippy reason. It’s time for Cocina 214’s annual Running of the Chihuahuas event, where 100 tiny furballs race for glory (or treats?) to benefit Winter Park Lost Pets and A Cause 4 Paws Rescue. Spectators can look on – margarita in hand, of course – for free, or you can enter your puny pup in the race for a fee. DJ Guij performs, offering up some motivational music for the tiny racers, and a Tito’s photobooth offers photos for proud dog moms and dads to take with their pooch pre- and post-race. Think you might need some liquid courage to cheer your pup on? The outside bar provides numerous drink specials. Oh, and did we forget to mention that there’s a Patrón tequila sampling? International Freethought Film Festival FILM

You can be excused if you feel all movied out after the conclusion of last week’s epic Florida Film Festival, but film fans – particularly doc hawks (let’s just pretend that’s a thing) – should be aware that the International Freethought Film Festival, returning to the Gallery at Avalon Island this weekend, offers plenty of reasons to jump back into binge mode. Focusing on films that challenge basic assumptions about society, the festival is an all-you-can-watch buffet for those who like their film perspectives a little outré. In addition to plenty of shorts, this year’s features examine subjects like sex workers in Guam (Exotic), Chinese government-sanctioned harvesting of human organs from political dissidents (Hard to Believe, pictured), and a look at a Jewish anti-Zionist movement (Jews Step Forward).
