Last week, we reported on vandalism at Orlando’s LGBT+ Center, which has seen their phone lines cut and a white-supremacist sticker pasted over their Pulse memorial mural.

Readers sounded off. @Amy Marie This doesn’t make sense. White power hating on gay people? It sounds to me like uneducated people tried to make it look like white power. Not acceptable regardless. Just really strange. @Cayla Parks White supremecist ideology usually intersects and overlaps with anti-LGBT, anti-Jewish (etc.) hate. Once a person dabbles in one kind of extremist identity-driven bigotry, it’s psychologically very easy to spread out into other kinds. So, it’s not strange at all really. @Christine Rice It is because it scares them.

They are frightened little babies who hate something that is different from themselves.

PRES PRE SS CL CLUB Orlando Weekly publisher Graham Jarrett on supporting a free press: ‘We are the eyes and ears of your community, but we cannot do it for free’ I seem to have so much to say, and so little room to say it in … Where do I start? Maybe with the fact that the business model of simply selling ads to support and give away high-quality journalism is broken.

It’s been broken for a while. At Orlando Weekly, we have been working our butts off throwing three-ring circuses (read: elaborate events) to pay for this journalism we give away at no cost to readers because we think information is important and should be available to everyone.

The subscription and paywall model is broken, too.

One only needs to look at the carcass of the Orlando Sentinel’s once-sprawling downtown campus to understand that.

Or maybe I should start with the fact that the institution of journalism is under attack and the ideals of a free press are being eroded.

Protection of press was the very first amendment ever to our great constitution because it was deemed vital to protect the citizenry against tyranny. Power breeds corruption, and the institution of the free press was established to peer through the talking points and report truth to the people. In 2019, the U.S. – the originator of this once new, necessary “free press” movement – saw its ranking in the world’s press freedom barometer slip from “acceptable” to “problematic.”

We take our press for granted, but think about it – reporters go unarmed into war zones, or into hostile protests like Charlottesville where people are killed, just to bring us the news. Journalists venture into Wuhan, a city 30 percent larger than New York in the interior of communist China, and live in lockdown just to bring us the story of a mysterious deadly new virus. Newspeople stand outside during the hurricane, so the rest of us can stay a safe distance away.

This is the information we use to make decisions about our lives, our elections, the companies we support, the foods we eat, the places we live, the countries we visit, the airlines we fly, the cruise ships we travel on and on and on. Imagine just being a normal person, and walking into White House press briefings to do your job, and being called names on national TV by the President of the United States, the leader of the free world, the most powerful, highest profile and most influential person in the world. Would you come back for a second day on that job?

And think about how that translates to his followers’ treatment of you when you’re off-duty, walking down the street with your friends and family. Imagine how that feels when, by comparison, he seems to have plenty of respect for the very fine people who chant “Jews will not replace us” and the ruthless, murderous dictators of communist North Korea and Russia. In fact, his neverending attacks and the untrue moniker he’s attached to the “failing New York Times” is exactly the type of

propaganda dictators and powerful governments use to discredit detractors – which is exactly what our forefathers established a “free press” to protect against. How often do we show appreciation for the folks that do this?

At the very least, the person in the highest office of the birthplace of free press should be its strongest advocate.

But times have changed.

So imagine what it would be like without professional reporters and news outlets. Imagine if the only information we had on COVID-19 was coming straight from our government – no stories filed from hospitals or meatpacking plants or Italy; no stories interviewing victims or survivors or first responders. Imagine if no one were there to broadcast live during 9/11 or if it were up to BP to tell us about their oil spill and Boeing to report on its plane defects.

Imagine someone barging into your workplace, angry, targeting you for what you do. It happens. Has it slipped your mind that five journalists lost their lives at The

Capital in Annapolis, Maryland? You may think that’s an extreme case and it doesn’t relate to our local media, but at Orlando Weekly we were forced to change our security protocol after a couple too many angry readers barged in, shouting profanities, searching for particular writers, even threatening to find their families.

Were you outraged and sickened when Jamal Khashoggi was brutally butchered in the Saudi Consulate in Turkey, and the U.S., the supposed protector of free press, did absolutely nothing? How would you feel if you were just a normal person, living in Orlando, doing your job and you were featured on hate-group websites targeting people in your profession? Orlando Weekly journalists have firsthand experience of that.

Journalists aren’t perfect. No one is. But we do what we do because we believe in our mission. We believe journalism is necessary for a healthy society. We believe government and the powerful must be held accountable.

And we do it despite retaliation, and Orlando Weekly

has had its fair share of retaliation. Were you in Orlando, or do you remember when OW staff was arrested in front of the local news cameras? You’d probably be surprised at some of Orlando’s most “progressive” and powerful who pulled their advertising in an attempt to censor us.

It’s not all bad, though. In fact, it’s pretty freaking good a lot of the time. We also get to be in the heart of the community we love. We believe in our culture, in our arts, our music, our dining and nightlife. We love experiencing and writing about it and sharing it so as many people as possible will know about it. I cannot tell you how often people say when they moved to Orlando they had a certain perception of it and then they found the Weekly and their eyes were opened to what an incredible place this is to live.

We do get some appreciation, but seldom in the form of financial patronage that helps sustain us, like most businesses get from those whom they serve. So if you appreciate us, I hope you will consider joining our Press Club and showing that you care about local journalism and that you not only want to see it survive, but see it thrive. 100 percent of the proceeds will go toward our editorial efforts (not to events or promotions or whatever else). That’s it. It will keep the writers writing, bringing Orlando as much information as we possibly can – the good, the bad, the ugly; the news, the culture and the Disney.

Yeah, this COVID-thing is tough. It’s really tough. Ad revenues are down 75 percent, and event revenues are gone completely for now. But even when it’s over, we’re going to need your help, just like the restaurants and bars and retail establishments. We all need the support of the people we serve.

‘Obamagate’ is 2020’s version of birtherism-meets-Hillary’s-emails

Michael Flynn is neither the hero nor

the victim in this story.

Rather, like so many in President Trump’s orbit, he’s a means to an end – in this case, the White House’s attempt to rewrite its history of failure.

Flynn was Trump’s first national security adviser for 24 days before being fired. He later pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with a Russian ambassador. Last year, however, he began claiming that he’d been set up by the deep state, and he found a sympathetic ear in new attorney general and Trump sycophant William Barr.

On May 7, the Department of Justice moved to dismiss charges against Flynn, claiming that the government could not prove he lied (though he admitted it), and even if he did, his lies weren’t “material.” More than that, the DOJ’s filing was a searing attack on both the FBI and the legitimacy of the Mueller investigation itself. The two were connected, after all.

The day after Trump fired Flynn, he pressured thenFBI director James Comey to drop the case against him.

Comey refused, and Trump’s later decision to fire him led to Mueller’s appointment and an investigation that consumed two years of Trump’s term.

No sooner had DOJ brass intervened in the Flynn case than Trump promised recriminations: “I hope a lot of people are going to pay a big price because they’re dishonest,

crooked people. They’re scum – and I say it a lot, they’re scum, they’re human scum.”

He didn’t identify the “scum,” but within days, the hashtag #Obamagate began trending, promoted by Trump himself.

In Trump’s words, it was the “biggest political crime and scandal in the history of the USA, by FAR,” though he never articulated what that crime was. No matter. The overarching idea is that the Obama administration engaged in an elaborate anti-Trump conspiracy, beginning with an investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 campaign.

The proof, Trump and his allies say, lies in Flynn’s “unmasking,” a term opaque enough to sound sinister.

Unmasking works like this: The U.S. government can’t spy on citizens without a warrant. But when it surveils foreign targets, it records their conversations with Americans. In intelligence reports, Americans’ names are replaced by “a U.S. person.” Administration officials can seek to “unmask” the name if they think it’s important; this happens thousands of times a year.

Last week, three Republican senators released a list of 30 officials who had unmasked Flynn between the 2016 election and the inauguration. Some were lower-level intelligence agents or individuals attached to NATO. Other requests came from the administration’s upper echelon, including the CIA and FBI directors, Obama’s chief of staff, and Vice President Joe Biden. These seem tied to conversations Flynn had with

Sergei Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the U.S., on Dec. 29, 2016.

That day, Obama had expelled 35 Russian agents in retaliation for election interference. In five calls with Kislyak, Flynn assured him that the next administration would ease sanctions and urged Russia not to retaliate in kind. Intelligence officials requested that the U.S. person be unmasked. These requests went through the proper channels. There was nothing illegal or improper about them.

The crime, such as it is, was that someone leaked news of Flynn’s conversation with Kislyak to the Washington Post.

Leaks happen every day, and this wasn’t exactly the Pentagon Papers. But it set things in motion. Vice President Mike Pence and press secretary Sean Spicer said that Flynn denied speaking to Kislyak about sanctions. Intelligence officials knew that wasn’t true.

At this point, the FBI was about to close its counterintelligence investigation into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia.

Flynn’s calls, however, opened a new line of inquiry. And if Flynn was freelancing, they thought he might be vulnerable to blackmail. When they questioned him, he lied.

The DOJ now says his lies are irrelevant because the entire investigation was illegitimate.

So committed is Barr to Trump’s exoneration that he handpicked a U.S. attorney, John Durham, to investigate the investigators, undercut Mueller’s findings, and – fingers crossed – charge some of those who handled the investigation. (Barr said Monday that Durham was unlikely to go after Obama or Biden, but he’s proven pusillanimous in the face of Trump’s tantrums.)

If you don’t think this a conclusion in search of evidence, consider what a DOJ spokesperson told Fox News about unmasking: “I can tell you that [Durham’s] team is working diligently to get to the bottom of what happened.

Because, Martha, what happened to candidate Trump and then President Trump was one of the greatest political injustices in American history and should never happen again.”

Trump wants vindication – and vengeance. It’s not just that his election carries the asterisk of Russian interference.

It’s that Obama has been renting space in his head since his 2011 White House Correspondents Dinner mockery. Try as Trump might to erase his predecessor’s legacy and diminish his record, Obama is still the most popular politician in the country.

Trump is already running the most vicious campaign in modern history: pushing conspiracy theories, calling Biden senile, attacking whistleblowers, threatening tech companies, attacking journalists. This week, two of Trump’s sons insinuated that Biden was a pedophile. (FWIW, unlike Trump, Biden has never been sued for allegedly raping a child.)

By associating Obama with an opaque but ominous-sounding pseudo-scandal, Trump probably hopes to bring Joe Biden’s best surrogate down a notch or two. The ginned-up indignation over Hillary Clinton’s email server showed how effective these attacks can be, and how willing much of the media is to play along.

But the martyrdom of Michael Flynn is about more than that. It’s fuel for the white grievance that Trump believes will animate his base, a way to stoke resentment against the African American president whom he blames for his problems.

This is Trump’s comfort zone. With more than 90,000 Americans dead and 36 million out of work, it’s also the only card he has to play.

WFTV Channel 9 anchor Martha Sugalski interrupted on air by her 6-year-old son Well, someone’s grounded.

WFTV Channel 9 anchor Martha Sugalski’s Thursday 5:30 p.m. newscast was interrupted by her 6-year-old son, Heaton, running into the room behind her, screaming, just as a segment about a Daytona Beach restaurant was ending.

Heaton dashed by Sugalski before she could introduce the next story, also about the coronavirus pandemic, but she didn’t miss a beat.

“Sorry about that,” said Sugalski quickly, before continuing with barely a pause. “The Department of Labor issued new safety tips today for taxi cabs and ride share companies to help reduce the risk of exposure to the coronavirus ...”

Heaton continued screaming in the background as Sugalski listed off the new safety guidelines, her voice growing slightly more agitated from the noise. When she read the final tip, the phrase “crack open the windows for better air flow,” came out as if she were desperate for someone to please crack open the room and let these kids out.

Later in the broadcast, Sugalski hugged Heaton on-air, to show viewers he’s still alive and well.

“I was scared,” said Heaton from his mom’s arms. Her other son, Maxwell, took the blame online, tweeting his mom to say, “Hahahahaha @MarthaSugalski sorry for knocking on the door and scaring Heaton.” Sugalski joked back that he’s now “out of the will.”

The clip was posted on Twitter by WFTV reporter Lauren Seabrook, who wrote “Ohhhh man, @MarthaSugalski just had the most REAL LIFE mom moment on tv,” before later posting the clip and the message, “Hilarious! Shoutout to all the working moms doing it all right now!”

Viewers on Twitter were appreciative, praising Sugalski for her composure, and because it was one of the cutest and most hilarious unscripted news interruptions yet of These Times.

“I watched it a few times, I sighed of relief I’m not alone AND shed a few tears bc this is the new normal and being a work from home parents is not easy!!” wrote one Twitter user. “My son did the same while I was on a virtual conference & I had to hold back lol.” “@MarthaSugalski we all appreciate you keeping it real, in the very real work from home environment so many families [are] in right now. Lol. Love it,” wrote another.

“Working moms – we got this!” Sugalski wrote back.

North America’s first drive-in music festival will happen in Orlando in June About a month after Germany’s World Club Dome held its first drive-in rave, which went viral on social media, American artists are taking a crack at it – and Orlando’s Central Florida Fairgrounds will play host to the first one on June 6. Orlando-based DJ and producer Carnage, already a festival pro with his Rare fests held here in the City Beautiful, announced Road Rave on his Facebook page on Thursday as “THE FIRST EVER NORTH AMERICAN FESTIVAL IN CORONA HISTORY!” Road Rave’s lineup will feature Carnage, Riot Ten, Blunts & Blondes, Nitti Gritti and Gravedgr. The four-hour event in June will have “a full festival main stage production,” according to a press release. Road Rave is already garnering notice in international outlets like Pitchfork and NME. In order to maintain social distancing precautions, there will be a maximum capacity of 500 vehicles, with a limit of six and a minimum of two passengers per vehicle.

On-site food trucks will provide concessions and “roaming golf-cart vendors” will take orders. Festival attendees are encouraged to wear face masks, and “social distancing will be heavily enforced with strict guidelines and restrictions on when attendees are allowed to safely leave their vehicle,” according to the Facebook event page.

Carnage says he will donate a portion of money from the event to the ANF COVID-19 Relief Fund (anfnicaragua. org), which assists vulnerable communities in Nicaragua.

‘Tiger King’ star and Florida Big Cat Rescue CEO Carole Baskin is selling cloth masks with her tagline Big Cat Rescue, a Hillsborough County animal sanctuary featured prominently in Netflix’s Tiger King documentary miniseries, is selling CEO Carole Baskin’s cloth masks to raise funds.

“Hey all you cool cats and kittens!” wrote the group in a Saturday Facebook post. “Be one of the first to get your very own mask featuring Carole’s favorite tagline!”

The dual-layer masks come in black and leopard print, with proceeds benefiting the organization. They’ve been soliciting donations online since closing the park in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In 2011, Big Cat Rescue filed a lawsuit against Joseph Maldonado-Passage, aka “Joe Exotic,” who ran GW Exotic

Animal Park in Oklahoma. Exotic had fixated on big-cat sanctuary rival Baskin, alleging frequently that she killed her husband and fed him to her tigers. In 2013, Baskin prevailed in a trademark lawsuit against GW Exotic Animal Park, and Maldonado-Passage was ordered to pay Big Cat Rescue $1 million. Maldonado-Passage later hired a hitman to kill Baskin, a scheme that failed, and was imprisoned on two counts of murder-for-hire, eight violations of the Lacey Act and nine violations of the Endangered Species Act. The attention hasn’t been all bad for Baskin, who is slated to be played by SNL’s Kate McKinnon in an upcoming docuseries, as she continues to leverage her fame to raise funds. – Dave Plotkin

Orlando housing sales drop and prices rise as coronavirus slows closings The Orlando Regional Realtor Association released new numbers last week showing the effects of coronavirus on home sales in Central Florida.

Orlando’s median home price in April rose by 12 percent, while the number of sales dropped by 28 percent as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the report. The changes come as the inventory of available houses for sale stays steady, down just 3 percent from last year. Despite the slowdown, the real estate association remains optimistic.

“Orlando Realtors anticipate listings and buying activity will eventually resume, especially given our history of demand versus low supply, along with the record low mortgage rates that increase buyers’ purchasing power,” said ORRA president Reese Stewart in a statement.

The median price for all types of homes sold in Orlando in April is $263,750, up 12.2 percent from the April 2019 median price of $235,000. That’s 4 percent above the March 2020 median price of $253,500. The sale price of singlefamily houses increased by 9 percent over last year, and condo prices increased by 5 percent.

The price increases are due to the ongoing housing shortage, says Stewart.

ORRA members participated in 2,393 sales of all home types combined in April, which is 28.1 percent lower than the 3,329 sales in April 2019 and 25.3 percent lower than the 3,204 sales in March 2020. Sales of existing houses within Lake, Orange, Osceola and Seminole counties in April were 32.4 percent lower than in April of 2019.

There have been even deeper drops in the number of existing-house sales, with Orange County experiencing the largest local decline, down 35.8 percent below April 2019. – Dave Plotkin

Three women discuss the impact COVID-19 is having on their experience with pregnancy

A

s Florida begins easing quarantine restrictions and reopening the economy, one of the first sectors the state let expand in terms of operating capacity was health care. As of last week, medical facilities were able to resume outpatient and invasive surgeries, diagnostics and more.

But the lifting of restrictions came with caveats, including COVID-19 screening for patients prior to entry and limits on visitation.

One sector of health care that has allowed visitors – or, a single visitor, rather – during lockdown has been obstetrics. Orlando Health’s Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies requires testing for all patients prior to admittance, and self-isolation after testing until results come back. Only one “support person” is allowed in during delivery, an the visitor is also screened. And everyone – mom, designated visitor, hospital staff – wears masks.

But these procedural changes, plus current news stories – like those about women diagnosed with COVID-19 giving birth while in a medically induced coma – can up the anxiety level for anyone about to have a child.

We spoke with three women who have either recently given birth or are about to about their experience with pregnancy during the pandemic.

It should be noted that all of these women have access to health care and have what could be considered typical pregnancies. Interviews have been edited for clarity and space.

Caitlin Burnett Caitlin Burnett will be a first-time mom, with a due date in mid-June. She and her husband, Barry, recently had to adjust their birth plan to accommodate for COVID-19 restrictions. Burnett will now be doing a home birth, attended by two certified professional midwives, after their original hospital choice was dismantled. Burnett says the change prompted her decision to “look really seriously at home birth” to make sure the support system she wanted was able to attend the birth, and to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID in a hospital setting.

What is it like being pregnant right now?

I find that it’s this really weird moment where you are both extremely vulnerable

– like your body is not functioning how it has functioned for your entire life, and you don’t know what it’s going to do or what it needs because it’s all new and it’s all directed by hormones that just take over.

So, in that way, it’s kind of a uniquely vulnerable time. But then, on the other hand, your body is literally manufacturing a brand-new organ and putting together the building blocks of life. And, regardless of what you’re thinking or feeling, it is figuring out how to produce a human. It’s just this incredible, weird feeling to be both totally out of control and then doing something entirely new that you have no idea how to do but is going to happen anyways.

The pandemic just kind of increases that feeling of vulnerability because you don’t know what would happen if you were to get sick. And then it definitely completely upended our birth plan. orlandoweekly.com

Has there been concern about – if you were going to do labor and delivery still at a hospital – about Barry not being able to go to the hospital?

precautions. But they are connected to a network, so if our two midwives couldn’t personally be there, I trust that they’d find good colleagues to send us.

That was one of our big concerns. One of the initial triggers for us to consider a home birth even before they dismantled the natural birth option that we wanted to use was that they are cutting back really drastically on support people, so they wouldn’t allow our doulas in.

And at this point, as a first-time pregnant person, having doulas there to support me and tell me what’s going on and make the tendency for hospital births to be really medicalized less likely was really important.

So once they were not allowed, we kind of had a moment of figuring out what that meant and what we wanted to do, because having advocates who don’t want to push medical options was really important. And I think it’s also really still changing, literally week by week. So we had looked at another hospital that at that point had still been allowing doulas, but by the time we called back the next week, they were in the same camp.

And with COVID, if Barry was to be sick, they would not let him in. And then the other moment that was extra terrifying was that our obstetrician warned us that if either of us were positive, the baby would be isolated from us for the first 14 days of his life. Like we could not touch, care for, bring that baby home for two weeks, which I just can’t even imagine.

Obviously, the world has drastically changed in the eight/nine months you’ve been pregnant.

What is your general overview of this experience? And have you been talking to other pregnant people or people who have given birth?

No, that’s been the other part of this whole crisis: The isolation has hit pretty hard because all the stuff that you’d expect from like a first-time pregnancy of getting to go to birthing classes, getting to do a hospital tour, where you meet other people at the same stage of life and form relationships and connect, all that is canceled. So, that’s been one of that aspects that’s been difficult because there’s a whole lot of excitement for us, like we’re thrilled to welcome this little human and see what he’s like and see him grow and learn about the world.

But there’s also an element of grief, like all the stuff that we thought you were going to get to do – celebrating, building a community – all that is canceled, so I’ve definitely been going between just being really upset to really angry, and I think now I’m finally at acceptance. Except when I see the stupid people who are out there without a mask walking too close and touching me. Then I go back to the anger stage of the cycles of grief.

Was it difficult for you to find doulas to attend the home birth? Have you heard whether or not this is an option that a lot of other people are moving to?

We had the doulas way before COVID hit … and they helped walk us through like hospitals versus a birth center versus a home birth. And they ultimately connected us with the midwives – they are called certified professional midwives as opposed to certified nurse midwives; nurse midwives are in the hospital, professional midwives do home births. They connected us with a couple of different folks to interview and they are being really selective right now because they’re getting a lot of calls.

But I think we had the benefit of from the very beginning planning for a natural birth.

I think it’s hard for us because no one wants to get anywhere near you because they don’t want to do anything that could harm you.

I know. I think even my parents are struggling with that. And I think postpartum is going to be weird and isolating, like extra isolating, besides the fact that I’ll be walking around in adult diapers for several weeks – people conveniently forget to leave that out of the story.

We had hoped that maybe my mom would be able to come and support us, even if it’s just hanging out with the dogs and helping to clean and make sure that we’re eating, but with all of this stuff, it’s just too much of a risk.

So we’re really kind of bracing to be on our own in a way that we didn’t expect.

Are the midwives relaying any information to you guys about their own precautions for COVID or what happens if Barry was sick at the house?

I know they come with their own PPE – they’ll be masked even at home. But, you know, we haven’t asked that. I think we are just being super cautious about isolation and not taking any chances.

Do you have any concerns about the midwives being in other people’s homes and then coming to your house?

I’m trying to trust that their contact with folks is limited enough.

They won’t be in a hospital setting with like, hundreds of people walking around touching everything, breathing – they’ll be in more limited settings where it’s just three or four people or two or three people. And they are using

How’s your OB? Do they have constantly updating advice for you guys? Or have they been able to at least provide some support or information?

They do provide information. The weird part has been, first of all, Barry can’t go with me (to the doctor) now.

Like, he’s not allowed in the building. It is only me. And I have to be wearing the mask, which when you have a baby pressing against your lungs and your lungs are literally functioning worse because of the hormone percentage, breathing is really just crappy.

So he hasn’t gotten to hear the baby’s heartbeat in a while. And I think it’s worse for folks who are getting pregnant now. I can’t imagine what it would have been like to be in that ultrasound room alone for the first time – to see the baby and to see the heartbeat and to know that everything’s OK. It’s just heartbreaking.

Then, especially in this phase of late pregnancy, they typically want to see you every two weeks or every week.

But because the risk is so great, they moved to telehealth.

And so we have video check-ins, but as an anxious person not having that chance for them to actually take my blood pressure or look at my weight or measure my belly, listen to the baby, all those reassuring routines are kind of out the door because we’re literally on a Zoom call in the dining room.

I think they’re trying to be flexible and provide information but it’s also fast changing. I think it’s really hard for them – they don’t know what the hospital will look like next week. Or, you know, if we see a spike if maybe it will be no support people, period, in the delivery room like it was in New York for a while. I think they’re navigating the crisis right along with us.

Andi Ploehs Andi Ploehs, a graphic designer and artist, just had her second child, Sage, at the beginning of April. After unsuccessfully attempting to conceive a child on their own for several years, Ploehs and her husband, John, began seeking medical assistance in their quest to become parents.

Ploehs began designing a line of greeting cards specifically aimed toward other women experiencing fertility issues and pregnancy struggles. She gave birth to her first child, Xavier, in 2018.

How did your pregnancy with Sage differ this time around – specifically in regards to any changes or adaptations for COVID-19?

Thank goodness we were in the last few weeks of my pregnancy when COVID-19 really hit the area. However, my doctor’s office immediately changed several policies including going to appointments alone.

I couldn’t even enter the office building without stopping at a station in the lobby where I was asked several questions related to the virus, and a temperature check.

Did you have to adjust your birth plan, if there can ever truly be a “plan”? What was the process like?

Once we started to get word of other cities using other parts of the hospital to treat patients, I got very nervous that there would be this influx of patients and that I would have to deliver in the ER. I wasn’t told I would be delivering in the ER, but I was told that no one really knew what to expect since it was new to everyone.

After that conversation, we started to entertain the idea of a home birth and even reached out to a doula we knew, but the thought of something going wrong and not being at the hospital didn’t ease any of my nervousness so we axed that idea.

Were members of your family or your support system allowed to be there for the birth?

I was allowed to have one person with me, so my husband was there, of course. But we both had to again answer questions related to the virus, our whereabouts and had our temp checked before we could even leave the hospital lobby. We decided to semi-quarantine weeks before I was induced to ensure no one got sick.

Many people have family members or friends help postpartum. With quarantine/isolation orders in effect, did that impact any of what you had expected your postpartum experience to be like?

My mother lives in Georgia and the plan was for her to be at my side when I delivered along with my husband.

She’s a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor and is considered high risk so she wasn’t allowed to travel for the birth.

With our son, she stayed and helped for two months, so it’s very strange not to have her here. We have an awesome support system and rely a lot on grandparents. The ones living here have been able to see our daughter six feet away, from the car, but honestly, I don’t know when my mom will be able to meet her granddaughter. It kills me inside, but I need to do all I can to make sure my family stays healthy.

Have you had any additional concerns with a newborn now in a world with a novel virus? Are you approaching anything differently beyond CDC recommendations for sanitization and social distancing?

Honestly, we would’ve been living a very similar life with a newborn even if there wasn’t a pandemic. We like to stay put for the first month or so, and are very particular about folks coming around, especially if they don’t have the flu shot, etc. One huge change from my last delivery was our time in the hospital post-delivery.

They usually want mama and baby to stay 48 hours with a natural delivery, but because of the pandemic, my husband and I decided we didn’t want to stay in the hospital longer than 24 hours if all went well, which it did.

I’m accepting this as our new temporary normal but not our permanent one. I don’t want my son to remember wearing a mask to go outside or not being able to give his grammy a hug because we don’t want to put her or ourselves at risk. But we are definitely following the CDC guidelines for sanitizing and social distancing. I can’t wait for the grandparents to finally be able to hold their granddaughter and grandson when this is all over.

Do you have anything you want people to know about pregnancy or pregnant women or newborns during the time of COVID-19, or any advice?

I was terrified weeks leading up to my delivery. I was listening to too many outlets and started to freak myself out. I had to block out media, social media outlets, and even some people. I did a lot of praying, and had to trust myself and the health care workers. I also had to trust that it would all work out, and reminded myself that I couldn’t get stressed because I had a baby girl still inside me that needed her momma to stay calm. I want mamas to remember we are tough and that this too shall pass. I never imagined I would be living through a pandemic, let alone giving birth during one.

Karla Weisenberger Karla Weisenberger is a small business owner and musician who is about to be a first-time mom with her

partner, Pete. She operates a bridal design boutique and plays in a folk group called Stitches & Seams. Her due date is at the end of May and she did not have health insurance for herself until she found out she was pregnant.

When you got pregnant, there was not a pandemic, and now there is. How has the pandemic affected your experience of being pregnant? How has it affected your birth plan?

When it first happened, the first thing that they did was close the schools and I really felt like nobody was reacting quick enough. My doctor’s office wasn’t really doing anything different and I called them and I was like, “I’m not coming in.” At this point, I was supposed to be there every two weeks or every week for my thirdtrimester check-ups. You don’t have people checking people. You don’t have people requiring masks. It’s like sick people and regular people can be in the same room at the same time. So my doctor was like, “OK, Karla, we understand what you’re saying. If you want to take this week off, that’s fine.”

And then three weeks went by, and (my doctor) was like, you really need to come in. I’m like, “Well, tell me what you’ve done to like change the situation to make sure that I’m not going to be sick when I go there.” So the first thing they did was started screening people at the door – you would pull up in your car and someone would meet you at your car and then they would ask you a bunch of questions. And then they would still let you go into the waiting room. I was the only person at this time wearing a mask and wearing gloves.

So that was probably five weeks in (to the pandemic) and I still felt very uncomfortable in all of my appointments. And then they’re like, “OK, it’s getting to be the end of your pregnancy, we need you to come in every week.” And I’ve also had some minor complications, so they’re trying to keep a closer eye on me than they normally would. So now when I go, I’m greeted at my car, or they have a little pop-up tent if it’s raining, and they take my temperature, they asked me those same questions.

And I wait in my car until my appointment.

I also go to the hospital once a week to have a nonstress test and an ultrasound just because of the minor complications that I’ve had. So right now, for the last three weeks, I go to the hospital on Tuesdays and I go to the doctor on Thursdays.

When I get there, they immediately put a mask on me.

They sanitize my hands and they, like, spray me down, and then they take my temperature. Then they asked me the same questions that the doctor’s office does, and if I pass all that, they send me to the next station. They’ve done a good job where they have little circles that you’re supposed to stand in so you know how far apart you’re supposed to be when speaking to anybody.

So as of right now, do you guys have a birth plan in place?

I’m going to wait as long as possible and do most of my laboring at home. It’s going to take me five minutes to get to the hospital.

Are there any kind of restrictions in terms of the amount of visitors you guys can have or who’s allowed to go with you?

So only Pete is allowed with me – my mom, the grandparents, nobody’s allowed in the waiting room at all. And once Pete is in that room with me, he is on lockdown with me. So anything he needs, he has to have in that room.

That does mean that they are giving us a refrigerator now, which is crazy. And they’ve been like, “Bring snacks because nobody can bring you snacks now or after the kid comes.” And after the kid is born, it’s only going to be Pete and I who are allowed to hold her. They don’t know how long it’s going to be before they’re like, “Yes. Your child can be held by somebody in the family.”

Did you guys have any plans for postpartum stuff that has changed?

Since they are telling us that nobody’s allowed to see her, nobody’s coming to help us – like we’re totally on our own. And we don’t know how long that’s going to be. And so, for someone like me who has suffered from depression in the past, knowing that your body goes through a lot of highs, and I’m not saying that I think I’m going to have postpartum depression, but I’m not saying that that’s not going to happen either. So I’ve been very much in contact with my doctors and been like, “Hey, I want to notice the symptoms and the signs,” you know?

I have to make sure that my brain is in the best possible way to care for this kid and that, we, as a team can do this just the two of us. And so that being said, we’ve also been like, OK, developmentally, we all know that kids thrive from extra physical contact and extra love and hugs and all the things. So we’ve been trying to research how can the two of us give her the same comfort and love that a family would normally give her?

How are you handling being a small business owner with maternity leave?

This whole thing messes with my financial situation majorly because I had all these brides lined up and spring is my wedding season. This was like my moment to make all the money I needed to make sure I could take those six weeks, eight weeks, whatever I needed to do. Because of that, I am not real sure exactly. And I haven’t qualified for any of the small business loans or the payment protection. With the baby not having an immune system, knowing that she’s not able to be held by anybody, I’m not planning on taking clients until they tell me that it’s safe for her to see anyone.

I have ordered one of those laser thermometers and I know that when I do eventually open, the clients are going to wear masks, I’m going to wear a mask and limit it to one person in the shop at one time. We’re still going to be social distancing, but I have to touch them – I have to fit their dress to them.

I don’t know when I’m going reopen, I really don’t. And I also don’t know what that means for my space. My landlord’s being super cool right now, but she’s got a mortgage and she’s got things that she’s going to have to do. I don’t know what that means for the future of my shop. I’m doing my best to be as cool as possible about it.

For whatever reason, a majority of my visits to Farm & Haus have been for breakfast, often with friends visiting from out of town. In my experience, F&H never fails to make a great first impression. Tourists seem to get a kick out of those “Wakey Wakey” ($10) and Southwest hash bowls ($12), but that’s not to say their lunch items deserve second billing – they don’t. Anyone who’s tried their ultrafresh Mediterranean salad bowl ($10) knows it’s more than just a pretty face of vegetables dolled up with hummus, crispy chickpeas and tahini.

Pho, like sushi, better burgers, omelets or fried anything, isn’t very conducive to the takeout experience – the at-home slurp is never quite as pleasurable as it is at a restaurant. Hien Pham and Huong Nguyen, the husband-and-wife team behind Z Asian Vietnamese Kitchen on East Colonial Drive, seem to agree, and they’re doing something about it. The pair is selling meal kits with detailed instructions so that you, too, can enjoy restaurant-quality pho in the comfort of your own home. The caveat: You need an Instant Pot to replicate the soupy sorcery.

I brought home a kit containing vacuumsealed packages of oxtails, aromatics and rice noodles, along with garnishes (bean sprouts, Thai basil, jalapeños and the like) of the freshest quality. A container holding a concentrated form of their secret stock went into the Instant Pot along with the meat, aromatics and 18 cups of water. It took 38 minutes for the water in the pot to boil; 35 minutes for the ingredients to cook; 40 minutes for the concoction to depressurize; and three minutes to boil the noodles. That’s a quarter of the time it would normally take to make pho. The result? Absolute bloody magic. Damn if this wasn’t one the best bowls of pho I’ve ever had.

A few days later, I busted out the Instant Pot for a kit of vegan bún bò hue (spicy beef noodle soup) I picked up from Z. The stock, fashioned from jicama, daikon, carrots, lemongrass, onions and spices, was shockingly good, its flavors thoroughly permeating the strips of “beef” during the pressure cooking. The thick, round rice noodles required a quick one-minute zap in the microwave prior to assembly, and instead of hoisin and sriracha, Nguyen included her house-made chili oil. It’s a knockout soup with a broth that punches well above its weight. The greatest vegan soup of all time? I’d say it’s the reigning champ in this town. Visit eatzasian.com/ mealkits to order.

GREECE IS THE WORD Coogan and Brydon’s final Trip movie is a worthwhile sojourn

n The Odyssey, Odysseus takes 10 years to return home more on Coogan and Brydon’s characters, and their family, from the Trojan Wars. Though no one would argue colleagues and romantic interests.

The oddest thing about the Trip movies is that they are March. Though the whip-smart banter, self-deprecating humor and celebrity impersonations have occasionally food films, travelogues, personal essays, comedies and grown tedious, especially in the Spanish sojourn, the series dramas – sometimes one at a time and sometimes simulhas maintained a good deal of its charm, if not its original- taneously. Indeed, Winterbottom’s odd, genre-busting ity. But, as Coogan says in the latest edition, “Originality is formula really shouldn’t work, at least not in a feature-film format. But it usually does, thanks mostly to the two actors’ overrated. Everything is derivative.”

That doesn’t mean there aren’t new vistas and even chemistry. And by the end of the latest chapter, the film fresh storylines to enjoy in the new film, which its creators flirts with another, even more appropriate genre: Greek confirm will be the last. History 101 – Vintage footage enlivens a new documentary series that chronicles major accomplishments and upheavals in the development of the human race. Over on Comedy Central, they have to get drunk to do this, so is anybody going to want to brave it sober? I mean, I couldn’t even relive my own dating history if I didn’t have a snoot full. (Netflix) The Lovebirds – You almost got to see this “action rom-com” in theaters last month. Then again, you almost got to do a lot of things.

Oh yeah! Apparently, Paramount thought the picture wasn’t anything you were going to wait a full year for, so they fobbed it off on Netflix and here it is. Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani play a couple who’re on the verge of breaking up when they get embroiled in a murder mystery. Sure, that’ll bring them together; it’s why everybody on Forensic Files is wearing promise rings. (Netflix) Premature – Audiences at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival were the first to witness Zora Howard’s performance as a Harlem teenager whose future is threatened by her romantic dalliance with a music producer. The movie is being promoted as a “romantic drama,” but I’m going to classify it as science fiction, for one reason: There are still black people in Harlem! (Hulu) Selling Sunset: Season 2 – Eight new episodes expose the highs and heartbreaks of L.A. real estate. Seriously, you try finding a buyer for Phil Spector’s place without springing for a good exorcist. (Netflix) Trailer Park Boys: The Animated Series: Season 1 – As a stopgap between seasons of its live-action forebear, the adult cartoon returns to show us what happens when Canadians stop being polite and start getting real. Real skeevy. (Netflix)

THE SHOWSTOPPER Eugene Snowden is in a hurry to get his new music out, but not to jump back on a stage

atching Orlando music icon Eugene Snowden’s stylish new video for his equally stylish new single “I’ll Do It” is like watching film reels from a bygone era: Traffic on Mills Avenue!

A bustling Will’s pub! Eugene giving a handshake to the doorman! Eugene and company playing to a packed Lil Indies! (And to think it was just filmed back in January.)

Once you get past the initial jolt of cognitive dissonance, you’re immersed in what was, until very recently, a vivid re-creation of Eugene Snowden’s performing life. A nattily dressed Snowden striding purposely into the bar, hat rakishly cocked over one eye, plugging in and ripping a set of passionate, punkish and primed soul. Add in a wellhydrated audience dancing and hanging on every word and the picture is complete. This clip’s mix of sounds and visions – and maybe this is kind of the cabin fever talking – lends the song an extra anthemic edge, an extra push of hope and resilience.

When Orlando Weekly reaches Snowden on the phone – at which point he pauses Norm MacDonald’s Dirty Work, it should be noted – Snowden chuckles at our read of the video and informs us, without a tinge of regret, that the single should have been out in April. It was meant to be the promotional herald for a run of North American tour dates.

“I wouldn’t have been home at all in April,” says Snowden. “If things were normal you wouldn’t be talking to me today here at home, you’d be talking to me on the second leg of my tour!”

Despite what would have been a series of debauched and ear-bleeding nights now placed on indefinite pause, Snowden is taking everything in stride. He’s keeping an eye on the news and on the science. For a man who’s been living his life on stages in Orlando for so many years, he’s in no hurry to jump back on one.

“I’m willing to wait. But I’m in a different situation than a lot of people out there. I’m 57 years old. I’ve been married and divorced.

I’ve had kids; they’re 30 years old now, they can take care of themselves. I don’t have a house, I don’t have massive debts. I can’t

compare my situation to others, but I can wait until it’s extremely safe.

“But I’m a fucking artist and I understand the desire to get my work out there. This is what I’ve been doing for the past 20 years.

So I feel for musicians. But I want to take precautions. I have to be really sure about this before I get back out there. My aunt – my dad’s younger sister – died of coronavirus; this has already touched my family.”

Even while in a wait-and-see mode, Snowden has been far from idle, jumping headlong into the live streaming game. He was there for Andy Matchett’s No Days Off telethon back in March. From there, he inevitably returned to Will’s Pub, resuming his Ten Pints of Truth residency on the Will’s stage, as Will Walker and staff worked out the bugs of live streaming in real time.

Snowden also performed as part of the New Standard’s nightly streams, and who knows where the wi-fi waves will find Snowden next.

It’s a bit of a master class to watch a consummate showman like Snowden give his all, with all his trademark confidence and anarchy intact, to an empty room. He laughs it off, saying, “You just know at some point there’s going to be some eyes on you.”

And he amply demonstrates that there’s room for some rock & roll mischief, even once removed. Snowden recalls the first Will’s stream with a shake of his head: “My pants fell down! I was loaded, I cussed so much! And later they said the mayor might have been watching!”

The one thing Snowden is impatient to do is finally release his long-awaited solo album, Only the Real Thing. Everything’s recorded and the cover art, a timeless portrait shot by local Mike Dunn (“A badass, I’m so happy with what he’s done,” says Snowden) is complete. “The way it was supposed to go was that we would have come back from tour and the album would be out. We had this planned out to a T,” says Snowden.

The last piece of the puzzle is mastering the recordings, which is a process that can’t be done to Snowden’s satisfaction remotely.

So he’ll wait a little longer, and really, what’s

a few more months, when tracking for the album started more than two years ago?

“It’s going to be crazy when it’s finally out,” he enthuses.

For now, Snowden is acquiring cameras and sound equipment to gain more control and flexibility for streaming performances.

“I don’t care what anybody says, this is going to be the way we have to perform for a while,” he asserts. “I’m getting a lot of calls to do this and to do that; I’m going to be producing a lot of stuff in-home.”

Snowden is also doing a lot of thinking about ways the Orlando creative community is going to have to adjust and recalibrate.

“I think now is the time for us to become communal again, and start connecting with and working together. … If it sounds cliché orlandoweekly.com

It’s going to be awhile before it does. Start becoming a little more communal. Reach out, reach out to me. … It’s not an easy thing to do, to seek out people for help. But know that we’re still here no matter what, even if it’s just to encourage each other.
