Not guilty is not the same as innocent He killed someone who was attacking him (“George Zimmerman is auctioning off the gun he used to kill Trayvon Martin,” May 12). How was he to know how old he was?

Should he have stopped and asked him while he was fighting for his life? Have you ever been in that situation? I hope I never have to make the choice between my life or my family’s life and the life of someone else. But you can bet your ass it’ll be their life and not mine if at all possible. We don’t live in a perfect world. Teach your children the value of human life and personal responsibility. Maybe they’ll think twice before breaking the law. It all comes down to choice. Besides, the man was acquitted!

Tried by a jury of his peers and found not guilty! Walk a mile in his shoes before making judgment on something you and I know nothing about.

Alan Grayson bickers with MSNBC host, accuses her of “spreading lies”

George Zimmerman tries to auction the gun he used to kill Trayvon Martin

he race for Florida’s U.S. Senate seat continues to be a circus (examples: Carlos Beruff calling President Obama an animal and U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy’s paternal financial backer), but U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson took it to a new level last week in a live TV spat with MSNBC host Joy Reid.

Reid was asking the Orlando Democrat about his earlier drama with U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (no relation to Joy Reid). The Nevada Democrat has called on Grayson to drop out of the Senate race amid an ethics probe into Grayson’s management of his hedge fund. Politico reports that during a meeting of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, Grayson confronted Reid, asking if he knew who he was.

“Say my name, Senator,” Grayson ordered Reid. “Say my name.”

When Grayson asked Reid about his earlier comments, the Nevada senator told Grayson, “I want you to lose. It’s true.”

Grayson later appeared on MSNBC with Joy Reid to discuss the outburst, but ended up having another confrontation on the air with the TV host. Before Reid finished her first question, Grayson interrupted her.

“You got to start with correcting the record, Joy,” Grayson told her.

“No, wait a minute. You just did to me, Joy, exactly what Harry Reid tried to do.

You smeared me.”

Grayson told Reid that although the Office of Congressional Ethics says that “there may possibly have been some violations” in their reports to the Ethics Committee, no investigative subcommittee was formed.

“In every single case where the Ethics Committee decided not to form an investigative subcommittee there was no official sanction,” Grayson said.

“Ever. Ever, Joy. Ev-er. … You and Harry Reid both need to stick to the truth.”

But as Reid tried to point out, the investigation is still open. The Office of Congressional Ethics said in its report that there was “substantial reason to believe” several allegations, including accusations that Grayson permitted the use of his name by four entities linked to his hedge fund, that he omitted required information from his annual financial disclosure statements, and that he had a congressional staffer use official resources while working for the congressman’s hedge fund.

“My goodness, more lies,” Grayson said to Reid at the end of their interview. “Could you at least get your facts straight before you try to slime me on national TV? Is that asking too much?” mcordeiro@orlandoweekly.com

Pricey touchdown Tourist Council recommends using $3 million in hotel taxes to bring the NFL Pro Bowl to Orlando

T

he Orange County Tourist Development Council agreed on a plan to spend $3 million in hotel taxes over the next three years to bring the NFL Pro Bowl to Camping World Stadium in Orlando.

The council’s recommendation now heads to the Orange County Board of County Commissioners for approval.

The all-star game has been played in Hawaii for decades, but local tourism officials have put in a bid to host the Pro Bowl in 2017 and following years.

projected that presenting the event in Orlando would bring $25.3 million in visitor spending and $271 million in publicity value.

“This does so much to expand our image and our brand nationally,” Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs said at the tourist council meeting. “It’s very hard to put a value on this, but priceless would be a very good term.”

eighborhood watchman George Zimmerman spent the better part of last week unsuccessfully trying to sell the pistol he used to kill 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in 2012.

Zimmerman, who was acquitted of second-degree murder after killing the unarmed black teenager, listed the KelTec PF-9 9mm on auction sites as an “opportunity to own a piece of American history,” saying that a portion of the proceeds would go to “fighting the Black Lives Matter movement” and ending State Attorney Angela Corey’s career.

At first, the listing was posted GunBroker.com, but it was later pulled after the company says it wanted “no part in the listing on our web site or

in any of the publicity it is receiving.”

Zimmerman then listed the gun on UnitedGunGroup.com with a starting bid of $5,000, but the website crashed after online trolls, including one calling him- or herself “Racist McShootface,” managed to raise the price to $65 million.

On Monday, the gun was listed again under a new listing with a starting bid price of $100,000 and a “buy it now” price of $500,000. An attorney for the Martin family told the Washington Post that the family was “disgusted.”

“It is insulting to this family that he would decide that he would sell the gun that he killed their child with,” attorney Daryl D. Parks told the Post. – MC

THE ORLANDO FRINGE FESTIVAL TURNS 20 memorable moments in Fringe history, plus our top five picks of 2016

Prolific producer-playwright Michael Wanzie’s campy comedies have become synonymous with Fringe, but his first Fringe outing was the intimate wartime drama In Close Quarters, which he’s reviving this year. Without it, we might never have seen Wanzie’s The Lion Queen, which remains the Festival’s all-time top seller.

nce again, it’s time for the Orlando International Fringe Theatre Festival (renamed earlier this year as simply Orlando Fringe) – and this year our readers’ longtime favorite annual arts event is even shinier than ever. That silver sheen the Orlando Fringe is sporting is in honor of its 25th edition. In that quartercentury, the fest has seen countless peaks and valleys, scandals and tragedies, inspiring performances and exposed genitalia. With far too many highlights to list them all, here’s my highly subjective and completely biased list of 20 memorable moments from Fringe’s history, along with five show picks from this year’s festival that we might be talking about 25 years from now.

1994: Wanzie’s first Fringe

1995: Fringezilla debuts Who’s big and green, loves children, and smells like Febreze? Everyone’s favorite Toho knockoff originally appeared in 1995 as the festival’s official mascot, and later became the symbol of Kids’ Fringe, spreading the word about Fringe at his costumed appearances.

1992: Orlando Fringe is founded

1996: Sentinel sponsors Fringe

It all started with three members of SAK Theatre (Terry Olson, Andy Anthony and Rick Kunst) and a dream to start an unjuried, uncensored festival in the spirit of Edinburgh, Scotland’s famous Fringe. That first year there were only 34 shows in four venues (barely a quarter of the

Fringe’s first few years were decidedly scrappy, but in 1996 they snagged a sponsorship from the Orlando Sentinel, with the festival schedule published in the paper.

At the time OW sniffed that Fringe “has sold its soul,” but the Weekly printed Fringe programs a few years later.

1998: Fringe goes full time The first festivals were largely financed out of the pockets of its founders, but when they stepped away to pursue other work, Matt Wohl stepped up as the Fringe’s first full-time producer. Wohl was followed by many others (notably, successor Brook Hanemann), but his hiring marked Fringe’s start as a professional year-round organization.

2000: Tod Kimbro gets LOUD Zombie Doorman in 1997 was the first Fringe show from Orlando’s multitalented Tod Kimbro, but it was his ambitious 1999 teen terrorism musical LOUD that really grabbed my attention. LOUD is still crying for a full-scale revival, but Kimbro has become a key Fringe figure in the decades since.

2000: Naked Guy nearly nixed In one of Fringe’s most notorious incidents, the Oops Guys (Fiely Matias and Dennis Giacino, who later created the hit Bitches of the Kingdom, aka Disenchanted!) were threatened with arrest over their play The Naked Guy. The cops were called off, but the controversy created thenrecord crowds.

2001: DCO’s final show

2007: VarieTease triumphs

Fifteen years after Discount Comedy Warehouse sold out and moved west, no one has yet surpassed their sketch comedy. Audrey Kearns’ GeekGirlAuthority. com is essential reading, and hubby Brian Bradley’s sitcom Uncle Buck debuts this June on ABC, but we’re still dreaming of a DCO reunion.

The 16th Fringe birthed several festival favorites, including Dewey Chaffee’s Wayburn Sassy, but my favorite “fucking mindblowing” discovery of 2007 – after meeting my wife – was VarieTease.

Carnivale (which is being revived this year) wasn’t VarieTease’s first show, but it brought Blue Star and company out of the dance clubs and into Fringe’s spotlight.

2002: Fringe in flames When a blaze burnt down Church Street’s old Bryan Hotel, it took most of Fringe’s property – everything from paint and podiums to past programs and photos – with it. That could have spelled curtains for the festival, but thanks to producer Chris Gibson and financial manager Alauna McMillen, Fringe survived.

2004: Toxic Audio in NYC Disenchanted! may be the most recent Fringe product to be produced off-Broadway, but Toxic Audio (now known as Vox Audio) started the trend. The vocal ensemble debuted at Orlando’s 1998 festival, and by 2004 they had a Drama Desk Awardwinning show in New York City, showing just how far Fringe can take you.

2004: Fringe nearly folds

The 13th Orlando Fringe was the first and only for executive director Ed DeAguilera, who left the festival deeply in debt.

The fest could have capsized, but Chris Gibson’s successor, Beth Marshall, stabilized the ship and steered Fringe into a decade of growth.

2005: Fringe moves to Loch Haven After a year split between downtown and Loch Haven Park, freshman producer Marshall moved the entire Fringe to its current home. At the time many argued the posher digs would stifle Fringe’s bohemian nature, but the refreshingly rodent-free venues proved wildly popular.

2006: Buddy comes out Mayor Dyer has been a fixture at recent Fringe ribbon-cuttings, but his first official festival appearance was nearly his last when he was photographed being kissed by drag queens. “I thought I was done with elected politics,” Hizzoner said afterward.

2006: Pet Fringe Think that Fringe plus Kids’ Fringe and Visual Fringe aren’t enough? For a couple of years, there was also a Pet Fringe, attended by cats, dogs and other domesticated critters. It didn’t last, but it was early proof of the recent motto “Anyone Can Fringe.”

2010: Enter the closet Nearly every inch of the Lowndes Shakespeare Center has been used as a Fringe venue, including the bathrooms.

Nothing better represents the Festival’s “art anywhere” attitude than the Jamie Mykins Theatre, which artist Jeff Ferree established in a Shakes closet for his Captain Discovery puppet shows.

SETH’S TOP 5 FRINGE PICKS FOR 2016 The Animatronicans (Mo Laughs Comedy)

Space (Hubris Theatre Co.)

Josh Siniscalco’s robotic Abe Lincoln stole several past shows with cameos; now he’s starring in Jeff Jones’s Wanzie-directed theme park satire alongside attractions veterans Janine Klein, James Keaton and Doug Ba’aser.

Edgar Allan (The Coldharts)

2010: Feldman camps out Speaking of unconventional venues, performance artist Brian Feldman (who is recovering well after recent injuries) earned the “least convenient location” award for Fringe of Nature, which he performed in a tent pitched in Wekiwa Springs State Park. Fortunately, no spectators were eaten by alligators.

2011: Beth Marshall steps down When producer Beth Marshall announced she was stepping down at the end of the 20th Fringe, it sent shockwaves through the festival community. A Fringe fixture for more than a decade, Marshall is still producing shows locally and on the touring circuit, while veteran Fringe artist Michael Marinaccio joined executive director George Wallace as the festival’s new producer.

2012: Hard Rock lives Over the years, Fringe has had sponsorships from Florida Theatrical Association, Disney, Blue Man Group and other heavy hitters. But it really hit the big time with its first Fab Fringe fundraiser at Universal Orlando’s Hard Rock Live, which has also offered a line of collectors’ pins.

Writer-director Corey Volence and Imagineer Evan Miga reteam after 2013’s Key of E for an original sci-fi drama about four astronauts on a long-range mission that would make Sartre squirm.

… and 5 more Fringe shows to watch for: Brooklyn-based Katie Hartman and Nick Ryan play a tweenage Poe and his rival in an Edward Gorey-influenced “manic lullaby,” which arrives with critical praise from earlier stands in Cincinnati and Edmonton.

Hideout (Haste Theatre) The physical comediennes who won my heart with 2014’s Oyster Boy are back with a jazz age bacchanal blending a 1920s speakeasy with the ancient Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur.

2016: Guinness for McGrath Festival board member Matt McGrath passed away earlier this year, but his legacy won’t be forgotten at the beer tent, which will be pouring Guinness this year as per his last will and testament. Raise a pint to the proud Irishman, and toast another 25 years of Orlando Fringe.

From Broadway to Obscurity (M-1 Productions/Eric Gutman)

a Lil Women revival to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s 21 Chump Street. This original hip-hop comedy by Thom Mesrobian, Samuel Hammersly and Seth Brown looks like required pre-election viewing.

ORLANDO FRINGE MUSEUM

Show tickets can be purchased at one of Fringe’s five box offices or online at orlandofringe.ticketleap.com, and range from free to $11. The $10 Fringe button is a required one-time purchase that funds Fringe’s operations – all ticket sales go to the shows themselves.

Without a button and a ticket, you will not be admitted to ticketed shows.

The museum celebrates Fringe’s 25-year history. Find it at the Orlando Museum of Art and see items from the archives including posters, buttons, T-shirts, show props, costumes and more. The museum will be open from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, and daily during the festival from 6-11 p.m. on weeknights, noon to 11 p.m. on weekends. Admission is free.

VENUES The Loch Haven cultural campus is still the main base of operations, but Fringe has spread even further throughout the city this year. Loch Haven Park remains the center for the free fun (including the beer tent, food vendors and outdoor stage) of the Fringe Lawn. The Orange, Yellow, Pink, Brown, Blue, Red and Purple venues are in the Lowndes Shakespeare Center at 812 E. Rollins St. Orlando Museum of Art, 2416 N. Mills Ave., hosts the Gold Venue. The Silver and Green venues are found inside the Orlando Repertory Theater, 1001 E. Princeton St. The Black Venue is at 511 E. Virginia Drive, a short drive or bike ride away, and this year’s BYOV venues (there are seven announced so far) are all over town – see maps and show descriptions at orlandofringe.org for those addresses.

FRINGE LAWN See page 14 for a schedule of performers. The beer tent is open weekdays from 6 p.m. to midnight and weekends noon to 1 a.m. Fringe food vendors are open weekdays from 5 p.m. until midnight and weekends from 11 a.m. to midnight.

KIDS FRINGE Weekends bring Kids Fringe to the grounds of the Mennello Museum, offering free art and theater activities and performances for the whole family from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (both weekends).

FRINGE TEENS Expanded this year, Fringe Teens will feature 10 local high schools presenting award-winning one-act plays. Shows run from noon to 9 p.m. both Saturdays of the festival in the Orlando Repertory Theater and cost just $5 each. All proceeds support the schools’ theater programs.

VISUAL FRINGE The Visual Fringe gallery is displayed throughout the Lowndes Shakespeare Center, and all proceeds from art sales go to the artists. The Visual Fringe Art Bazaar happens from noon to 4 p.m.

FREE FUN ON THE FRINGE LAWN As any veteran Fringer can tell you, half of the fun of Fringe can be found at the central lawn of Loch Haven Park. It’s where you can grab a drink or some food from rotating food trucks, relax in the shade, and hear people pitch their shows (or talk shit about the shows they didn’t like). Thanks to local super-promoter Jessica Pawli, the outdoor stage has become a hotbed of top-notch local entertainment in recent years, and this year is no different. Here are some of the highlights:

Thursday, May 19 The opening night of Fringe kicks off with a concert from the Orlando Gay Chorus at 8 p.m., followed by superhero-themed ska band Beebs & Her Moneymakers at 9 p.m. The night is capped off with the Bikini Katie Variety Hour at 11 p.m. You may have seen Bikini Katie wandering around Fringe in the past with handwritten advertisements on the exposed parts of her body. This year, she hosts a late-night talk show on the outdoor stage with guests from various Fringe productions talking about their shows and playing games. Catch it at 11 p.m. again five more times throughout Fringe.

Saturday, May 21 The first of the outdoor stage’s themed days features Beth McKee and friends’ Swamp Sistas La La, showcasing some of the best female songwriters and performers throughout the day. Friday, May 27 In a move that may or may not get Pawli fired from organizing the outdoor Fringe stage in subsequent years, she’s invited Body//Talk – the genre-blending party patrol that takes over the Milk District on a regular basis – to descend upon Fringe for a night. Don’t be scared if a minor offers you a name tag and some face paint. Just roll with it and enjoy music from Bike Weak, the Welzeins, Evil Virgins and Slumberjack before Body//Talk’s main visionary, Phil Santos, gets on the decks to start a dance party.

It’s entirely possible that the cops will shut this down if the bass gets too loud, so stash your drugs accordingly.

ova, the Ivanhoe Village boîte touting its “scratch kitchen” and “farm-to-table” cuisine, has left itself open to scrutiny by listing a spate of local farms and purveyors on their website and, unashamedly, as art on the patio wall. If you are even a casual reader of restaurant-related news, you know that the much-ballyhooed “farm-to-table” appellation has received much scrutiny of late, and many restaurants have been found to be claiming indie farms but serving Sysco or the like.

So, without further ado, let’s get the formalities out of the way. Aside from Suwanee Farms, from whom Nova no longer buys yet still lists online (as of press time), all the names – Local Roots, Lake Meadow Naturals, Lombardi’s Seafood, for just a few – check out. In fact, chef Val Domingo sources from quite a few other farmers and small purveyors not listed on the website, like Sugar Top Farms (assorted tomatoes), Jackman Ranch (Florida wagyu) and McGregor’s Greens (microgreens), so good

on you, chef! Henry Melendy, founder of My Yard Farm and provider of various vegetables to Nova, applauds the chef’s passion for sourcing local, saying, “Domingo walks the walk.” So the question is: How well do all these local products come together?

Luckily for us, Domingo is as skilled at cooking ingredients as he is at sourcing them. A refreshing heirloom tomato salad ($10) – tomatoes from Waterkist Farms – is accentuated with blueberries, feta and two quenelles of peach-basil sorbet before being finished with a watermelon gastrique. The only complaint: not enough of it. If you’re looking to sink your teeth into something more substantial, panang curry-braised short rib tacos ($14) with pickled cabbage slaw will certainly do the trick, and at $14 for three tacos, they had bloody well better.

The price point, you’ll quickly notice, gives no consideration to the frugal diner.

We paid $21 for a piece of fried chicken.

That’s, like, three three-piece dinners at Popeyes! That said, it was a hefty breast (with wing) marinated in sriracha and buttermilk; also, it was superbly fried in duck fat and came with sides of braised collards and smoky gouda mac and cheese, but still.

The fillet of grouper ($26), while modest in size, couldn’t have been more perfectly seared, but even better was the chickpea salad on which it laid – the flavors of the ceci and the sautéed artichokes in lemon-caper sauce had me thinking back on some singular meals enjoyed in Italy. (Sadly, though, the fried chicken, mac and cheese, and fish all suffered from underseasoning.

More salt, please.)

By the way, if the weather is even remotely tolerable, try to grab a table on the patio.

It can get a little loud under the canopy, but after an extensive renovation, it’s one of the better outdoor spaces in Ivanhoe Village.

So, while the inviting bar area is cozy, the patio is where we’ve enjoyed dessert and drinks on more than a few occasions – desserts like the double chocolate cake ($6) snagged from the Cake Factory on I-Drive (where it can be had for $3.95 … just sayin’).

The cranberry-orange pound cake ($7), another hefty capper, comes with strawberries macerated in Grand Marnier and served with homemade whipped cream.

We couldn’t help but note how disproportionately large and filling the desserts were in comparison to everything else we had sampled.

OK, so portions may not be consistent, but at least chef Domingo’s passion and determination appears unwavering, and that says a lot. In the current guilty-untilproven-innocent climate restaurants find themselves, it’s a welcome sight to see a chef take a stand, then deliver.

Dapper Duck tries a lot harder than it has to. Opened about six weeks ago by the owner of the Downtown Pourhouse and staffed by experienced bartenders you’ll recognize from other downtown haunts, it’s got a built-in clientele. But rather than simply leaning on the regulars and the ideal Orange Avenue location, the Duck offers decor a bit nicer than it needs to be (Edison bulbs, etc.), a stellar food menu, way more wine choices than you might expect in a relatively casual downtown bar and grown-up staff mixing wellbuilt cocktails. The bar would probably be just as busy without all these things – and it is almost always busy – but it’s nice to know they’re putting the good work out there anyway.

rogress! Just a little bit! Dumb movie depicts teenage girls behaving badly – with a positive vibe, just like the boys have gotten since forever – and gives a platform for their wants and needs, especially in how they diverge from the bad behavior and wants and needs of teenage boys. It’s not often we hear a teenage girl – gosh, and a nonwhite teenage girl at that!

– complain onscreen, with would-be comic panache, that a frat party was “super rapey.”

Hooray!

But still: Bad Neighbors 2 – aka Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising – is nevertheless a dumb movie. And worse, it’s a comedy that isn’t funny.

The problem with the line “It was super rapey in there” about that frat party isn’t the delivery by hugely charming up-and-comer Kiersey Clemons, who is wonderful and will go far if the right smart parts can be found for a young black woman in Hollywood; her comic delivery is fine. It’s that she is speaking a simple truth: She’s not saying anything outrageous, as this sort of movie demands.

It may be unexpected that she is up there on the screen saying such a thing in such a movie as this – that her viewpoint is given any credence at all – but that’s not the same thing as “funny.” And “about damn time” is the only thing that gets this movie the slightest kind of pass from me.

There are other unexpectedly progressive aspects to Neighbors 2. The homophobia of its progenitor has been replaced by a sweet acceptance of the fluidity of sexual attraction; it acknowledges that women like to look at attractive men and can be driven to distraction by them. But this is otherwise more of the same of the original movie: a fragmented mess that throws out lots of attempts at humor and way too much grossout, rarely striking a chord with any of it. I laughed precisely once, at a bit of slap-schtick that is even more cartoonish that everything else around it. But it made me want to go watch some Bugs Bunny cartoons, not more of this.

The first Neighbors had two distinct stories sitting uncomfortably next to each other, that of Kelly (Rose Byrne) and Mac (Seth Rogen), new parents uneasily adapting to life tethered to a helpless infant, and that of Teddy (Zac Efron) and Pete (Dave Franco), best friends running the fraternity house next door; the two duos clashed in battles

over the needs of a quiet suburban neighborhood versus the wants of a rowdy bunch of college guys. Here, three stories bump into one another even more inelegantly.

Kelly and Mac have become complete idiots and terrible parents to their now toddler daughter – and no, there’s not even any satirical undertone about parenthood turning people into baby-talking morons – and their plan to sell their house has been scuppered by a sorority moving in next door.

The sorority is run by Shelby (Chloë Grace Moretz), Beth (Clemons) and Nora (Beanie Feldstein), and they started it because frat bros are so rapey and they wanted to party on their own terms. But they don’t know how to run the business of a sorority, so they enlist Teddy, who still hasn’t grown up and only feels at home at a college party.

Alliances among the groups shift with the demands of comedy, but it’s an escalation that feels more like desperation on the parts of returning director Nicholas Stoller and his co-writers, Andrew J. Cohen, Brendan O’Brien, Evan Goldberg and Rogen. Even they can tell when the funny is flagging (which is always): They toss in a dildo or have someone say “weed.” Neither works, particularly when everyone onscreen is cool with dildos and weed and there’s no shame involved.

Turns out grossout movies don’t work when they’re progressive any more than they do when they’re regressive, though Stoller and Co. don’t seem to be quite able to shake the reactionary. A Feminist Iconthemed sorority party might be a great idea, but a bunch of angry young women chasing down a frightened man and stripping him naked is still sexual assault. It’s pretty rapey, in fact.

Truth be told, I’m kind of intrigued by the cast of pedigreed comedians who have lent their voices to Birds, including Bill Hader, the brilliant Kate McKinnon and even Hannibal Buress. Excuse me, Hannibal Buress? Maybe we’ve figured out what made these birds so angry in the first place: Somebody outed them as date rapists. (PG)

I expect no less from The Nice Guys, Black’s 1970s period piece about a private dick (Ryan Gosling) and a hired enforcer (Russell Crowe) who team up to find a missing girl. And if you aren’t sold yet, there’s always the novelty angle to consider, given that this is one of two wide releases opening this week to feature a supporting turn by ... you guessed it: Hannibal Buress. What a good time for Cosby to catch up on his Words With Friends. (R)

heir name is somewhat misleading – there’s only one woman in Screaming Females, and although Marissa Paternoster’s vibrato-drenched voice can hit insane heights, she knows how to balance such whirling dervish wails with sneering verbal tics, flexible quiet/loud contrasts and some of the most jaw-dropping guitar work around. But that moniker serves as a handy summation of this New Jersey band: They contain multitudes, and what first meets the eye and ear isn’t necessarily what lies below the surface.

Take their 2010 and 2012 albums Castle Talk and Ugly, for instance. Released in the wake of Screaming Females’ attention-grabbing opening slot for megawatt hard rock stars the Dead Weather, these records contained noisy, ferocious blasts of punk, hardcore and psychedelia, all filtered through a shred-worthy classic rock prism. And then came the 2015 follow-up, Rose Mountain, an elegant downshift into poppier, more streamlined territory that was recorded and engineered by an outside producer, Matt Bayles, for the first time in Screaming Females history.

“We had a great time making Rose

Mountain,” Paternoster tells Orlando Weekly in a phone interview. “The weather was beautiful in Seattle, we were staying in a cool place, Matt was fun to be with … overall, it was really pleasant. And I think we succeeded in doing what we aimed to do: make a melodically concise record by paring away some of the things that we might deem excessive. We were trying to get down to zero and really analyze what made a song successful and what might be unnecessary.”

So even though Screaming Females’ music has evolved out of the frenetic basement punk show scene from which it was birthed, that sense of deliberation remains a hallmark for the band. When Paternoster, bassist “King Mike” Abbate and drummer Jarrett Dougherty first came together in 2005, a bad case of tendonitis sidelined Dougherty for the first few months. But he spent that time reading Our Band Could Be Your Life, Michael Azerrad’s tome about the iconic 1980s indie rock movement, and injected its DIY ethos into every move Screaming Females made.

“The three of us have handled every aspect of the band imaginable,” Dougherty laughs. “Everything from making merch to recording, getting albums pressed, driving the van, booking the shows, answering emails. sioned, and yet here it is, a tripartite tribute to all of the above. What a world we live in.

someone to put this out or book my band?’”

It’s that self-sufficiency that has allowed Screaming Females to cultivate a decadelong relationship with Don Giovanni Records and its founder, Joe Steinhardt.

“Joe has always been super supportive of everything we want to do,” Dougherty says. “We’ve entertained potential managers and labels over the years, but as soon as we start talking about the way we think about our music, they’re like, ‘Oh yeah, I gotta run.’ Joe and Don Giovanni are the exact opposite. I can’t imagine having a better dialogue or experience.”

Of course, not everything has been hunky dory in the Screaming Females world. Paternoster’s struggle with persistent mononucleosis informed much of the strangled lyricism on Rose Mountain. And despite her best efforts, some of those patterns still persist. “It’s really easy to get sick of yourself for writing about having your heart broken,” Paternoster says.

“So lyrically, I’m trying not to pull from those traumas because they’re kind of old hat – I want to write more sophisticated metaphors about things that are bigger than myself.”

Dougherty and Paternoster say that should be evident in their new material, a few snippets of which they’ll perform on this upcoming tour. “We’ve definitely changed in that we don’t want to do the same thing on every record,” Paternoster says. “Our ability to self-edit has improved.

But our incentive for making music hasn’t changed at all. We’re still playing rock music and trying new things together until something sticks and we’re excited about how it sounds. In that sense, there’s no big science to it.”

t’s almost a cliché now when young bands say, “Music is a way of life.” You sigh and wonder if that’ll hold when adult life comes knocking at the door of the practice space. Agnostic Front, however, have proven that clichés tend to be rooted in some truth. Bursting out of the NYHC scene of the early ’80s with classics like Victim in Pain and Cause for Alarm, the band, led by vocalist Roger Miret and guitarist Vinnie Stigma, never even considered stopping, despite a whole host of obstacles and struggles that would fill a book. And here they are today, revered elders of hardcore, poised to embark on yet another tour, playing alongside young bands and loving it. Miret spoke with Orlando Weekly from his home in Arizona.

Orlando Weekly: Didn’t you live in Orlando for a bit in the early ’90s?

Roger Miret: I actually did live in Orlando in … I’d say

1993. I went to the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute. Before then all I used to do was work on bikes; I’d work on them back home in New York. So in 1993 I came there to train as a Harley-Davidson mechanic.

Was it a creative time for you?

Very creative! I got to build two motorcycles in my bedroom. That’s how I spent my time!

I remember that a friend of mine swore that he saw you 26

in Publix – it was like an Elvis sighting.

I remember that place! That happened a lot there, people recognized me from the band and wondered what I was doing there. Same thing happens to me here in Arizona.

“What are you doing here?” I live here, man!

Agnostic Front in 2016 is in an interesting position in that a lot of very young bands are using your music as a direct template and you’ve refrained from the bitter old guy of the scene routine – “Lemme tell you how it was back at CBs.”

There’s no need to be the bitter, older guy telling everyone how to slice bread. We’ve always been who we are and even though we love the past, we look forward to the future. It’s awesome to see all these bands that are influenced by us. It always makes me feel good to know that I haven’t wasted my time!

The old-school vibe is happening once again. Which is very cool. And it’s great to be one of the founding fathers of that movement, we’re one among many bands that deserves credit for it. But what separates us is that we’re one of the few that stuck around the whole time.

How much longer do you see yourself going with this?

I’m having fun. So as long as I’m enjoying myself, and it’s not affecting my home life or my health, why not have a good time? We’re getting older, but I think hardcore keeps us younger, to be honest with you. Physically it does, mentally it does. I’m very aware of a lot of things. And I love it.

had kids and that was it. That was their life. And I’m really happy to live my life the way I want to.

You and Vinnie Stigma almost have a Jagger/Richards thing going …

I don’t think we’ll go on for that long! But we’re actually still enjoying ourselves.

What inspires you to write?

Just the news! The world. That’s the whole thing. Most people in America don’t even know what’s really going on worldwide or don’t care to know. The media – or the American media, let’s be precise here – is not giving you all the information you need. And they don’t want to. They want to keep you in fear. Go beyond the regular American news channels, look at it all.

What should people expect who haven’t been to an Agnostic Front show before?

Expect a genuine show, a lot of energy. A lot of old songs, we’re throwing in some new songs, a lot of singing along.

Enjoy yourself, have a good time. There’re a lot of groups playing with us, some good Florida bands.

What’s next?

Directly after this tour – the last show is on a Sunday – I fly home on a Monday early to Arizona and that Tuesday I fly back to Florida with my family. We’re going on vacation, we’re going to the Bahamas, we’re going to Atlantis so my kids can have a blast and swim with dolphins. Very hardcore, right? mmoyer@orlandoweekly.com

Miami’s Period Bomb hearkens back to the Slits, Lunachicks and Super-Heroines: bands that cut a loud, proud and visually flamboyant swath through the punk scenes of their respective times. Period Bomb beats the boys at their own volume-dealing game and adds just the right hint of “I’ll cut you if you look at me sideways” intensity.

On the evidence of the EPs released so far, the band is pitched perfectly between riot grrrl and postpunk weirdness. Live, the whole experience veers toward DIY punk psychedelia, with dirt, glitter, sweat, rhinestones, blood, spandex, vinyl and confrontation making for the perfect spectacle … and soundtrack. – Matthew Moyer

This Third Thursday gallery hop brings a special highlight: Redefine Gallery’s exhibition

by Brazilian street artist Yong. His colorful creations draw on everything from graffiti to cartoons to 8-bit video games, resulting in work that’s both immediate and, well, fun.

Def Leppard MUSIC

We thought the cab driver was trying to be funny when he picked us up to take us to the Def Leppard show a few months ago and was all “Didn’t you hear it was canceled?” and we were all “LOL, really funny dude.” But it wasn’t funny, because it was true: The triple-bill show in January with Def Leppard, Styx and Tesla was canceled at literally the last minute (there were folks waiting outside the Amway for doors to open) due to vocalist Joe Elliott’s persistent laryngitis. Well, here we are five months later, and Elliott’s voice has apparently been rested enough for the band to reschedule the gig, only this time Styx has been replaced in the lineup by REO Speedwagon. At this point in time, Def Leppard has become such a well-oiled rock & roll nostalgia machine that debating their merits is an irrelevant exercise; you either love them or you couldn’t care less. However, for those fans who do love them, the band delivers an excellent, high-energy show that, yeah, may lean a little too heavily on pre-recorded tracks for purists, but also completely and unapologetically delivers the ’80s melodic rock goods. – Jason Ferguson with REO Speedwagon, Tesla | 7 p.m. | Amway Center, 400 W.
