IN MEMORIAM: THE ORLANDO 49 Every week between now and the one-year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shootings, Orlando Weekly will profile a person killed on June 12, 2016. This week: Jerald Arthur Wright Jerry Wright’s mother says her son wasn’t a genius in school, a good athlete or someone who stood out in the crowd. María Jose Wright says what made Jerry a beautiful jewel of a human being was his ability to love and care for others.

“He wasn’t the life of the party, but he was the person who would make sure you were having a good time at the party,” she says.

“He was just a really sweet, loving spirit. He never missed a birthday and if anyone had a problem or need to get to the airport, he was always there. He was the one everyone could count on to be there.”

Jerry Wright, 31, grew up in Miami. As a child, his mother says, he struggled with severe dyslexia and a speech impediment, and had to wear a full body brace to straighten his spine. But none of that stopped him from trying to communicate with others, even if he did misspell some words while doing it.

María Jose Wright says she thinks her son’s love of making people feel special pushed him into a career in hospitality. After studying at Florida International University, he worked at Universal Orlando and Walt Disney World. On June 10, her son called to tell her he’d been promoted at Disney. Two days later, Jerry Wright perished at the gay nightclub Pulse during a mass shooting. He was celebrating the birthday of his friend Cory James Connell, 21, who was also killed.

His mother says over 800 people attended his funeral, and she learned how kind her son was not just to her, but to everyone he knew. Xavier Navarro told mourners that his cousin would always “out-gentleman” him by immediately helping others. “One problem with Jerry before was that there was just not enough of him to go around,” Navarro said.

“Now we are all lucky enough to have him looking over us as our guardian angel.”

María Jose Wright says after her son’s death, her daughter named her newborn son Jerald after her brother. The family misses him terribly, but they’re trying to honor his legacy by advocating for gun reform.

“He gave a lot of love to a lot of people in the 31 years he was with us,” his mother says.

“It just hurts that he was taken so soon. I miss him more than I can ever let anyone remotely understand.”

New bill would stop Florida bear hunts for the next 10 years: State Sen. Linda Stewart and state Rep. Amy Mercado, both Orlando Democrats, have filed bills to stop black bear hunts until 2027 and set aside $1 million to purchase more bear-proof trash containers for residents in areas where there are significant human-bear conflicts. In 2015, a state-sanctioned hunt killed more than 300 bears in the state, angering animal advocates in Florida and across the world.

U.S. District Judge Paul G. Byron overturned a ruling by a federal magistrate in California that would have allowed Noor Salman to be released until her trial on charges of aiding her late husband in the June 12 mass shooting. Federal prosecutors argued Salman, 31, was a danger to the public, though the magistrate found no evidence to suggest she is connected to terrorist groups or holds extremist views.

A suspect accused of using a high-powered rifle to shoot at a piece of the Sabal Trail pipeline in Dunnellon was shot and killed by local law enforcement officials after a car chase. James Leroy Marker, 66, of Collier County, was killed in Citrus County after officers say he fled from them and later pointed a gun at them. The controversial 515-mile pipeline project running through Alabama, Georgia and Central Florida will be able to carry 1 billion cubic feet of natural gas every day.

Orange County deputy shot; suspect killed in officerinvolved shooting: Sgt. Richard Stelter was shot multiple times while trying to serve a warrant on Christopher Redding Jr., 20, with three other deputies at an apartment complex in South Orlando. Redding, who was recently released from prison after serving three years for attempted murder, was wanted for allegedly violating his probation and several robberies involving elderly women who were injured when their purses were snatched. NOTHING TO SEE HERE Orange County School Board renews contract with an “alternative” charter school under scrutiny

range County School Board officials voted unanimously this week to renew a charter contract with Sunshine High School. Sunshine is currently under the microscope after a ProPublica investigation reported the charter school serves as a “silent release valve” for nearby traditional high schools by taking in academically challenged students unlikely to graduate on time, thereby improving those high schools’ graduation rates.

The school district has responded sharply to the article, with Superintendent Barbara Jenkins calling it “false” in a statement.

“Orange County Public Schools offers choice opportunities for any student, including those in need of an alternative pathway to obtaining a high school diploma,” Jenkins said in a statement. “We are disappointed in the fact that a news organization insisted on telling false stories which ignored facts, testimonials from students and parents, and documentation provided by [OCPS], the Broad Foundation and ALS Education.”

ProPublica reports that Olympia High School held assemblies for poorly performing students at which representatives from Accelerated Learning Solutions, a for-profit management company that runs Sunshine and other schools, told them they could catch up on credits and graduate. Sunshine High School, located in a strip mall, has 455 students that “sit for four hours a day in front of computers with little or no live teaching,” per ProPublica. The majority of students are black or Latino.

“Olympia keeps its graduation rate above 90 percent – and its rating an ‘A’ under Florida’s all-important grading system for schools – partly by shipping its worst achievers to Sunshine,” ProPublica reports.

ProPublica also found Sunshine uses a loophole in state regulations to claim virtually no dropouts from the school by marking students who leave as entering adult education programs, though officials couldn’t confirm whether that actually happened. In 2015, Orange County reported 211 dropouts while ALS reported 1,038 adult education withdrawals.

At the school board meeting on Feb. 28, several residents spoke out against Sunshine, including Heather Mellet.

“I think this is a very, very good example of how our broken accountability system pushed down by state legislators has forced school districts to be creative with their metrics,” she says. “The consequence being that a population of students become sacrificial lambs in an effort to salvage the majority.”

Mellet also pointed out that board members Christine Moore and Pam Gould received contributions from ALS during the 2016 campaign. Each received $500 from ALS last year, according to Orange County election records. OCPS General Counsel Diego “Woody” Rodriguez said this would not be a conflict of interest because board members did not have a financial or fiduciary interest in approving Sunshine’s contract.

Others, like Charles Jackson, a former student at Sunshine, and his mother defended the program, saying it was a final opportunity for him.

“My regular school didn’t want me; Sunshine took me in,” Jackson says. “I worked very hard for it. I’m 23 years old right now. … It was the last chance for me.”

The majority of board members defended ALS, saying they had taken personal tours of the schools and attended graduations.

District leaders also argue that Orange County does not benefit when students transfer to Sunshine and drop out because they’re still counted in the county’s overall graduation rate, which improved 3.7 percentage points last year.

“I’m not even hesitant about renewing this charter,” Board chairman Bill Sublette said. “We will follow up on whether there are assemblies held and students are told they have to go to those schools, because that is a very serious charge.”

In an email, OCPS spokesperson Katherine Marsh says the district “looked into” whether local high schools were pushing low-performing students to ALS charter schools before the board meeting took place and found no practice of forced placement.

Marsh says there was no internal investigation of the subject.

PRESIDENT SNOWBIRD Donald Trump returns to vacation in Florida again and makes a quick stop in Orlando to promote school choice

efore heading to Palm Beach for a weekend vacation at Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump was met with boos and middle fingers in Pine Hills last Friday as he visited a private Catholic school to promote school choice.

About 100 residents and activists with Organize Florida and other progressive organizations stood on Colonial Drive holding up signs and chanting slogans, including, “No Trump! No KKK! No fascist USA!” While the majority focused on supporting public schools, some protesters were there to defend communities they feel are under attack from the new administration.

A handful of Trump supporters were also there to greet him. Law enforcement officials created a barrier between protesters and the president’s motorcade as it drove by.

Trump visited fourth-graders at St. Andrew Catholic School in Orlando along with Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, Florida Gov. Rick Scott, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, and Trump’s daughter Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner, a White House adviser.

St. Andrew Catholic School, which is located in a predominantly African-American neighborhood, has low-income students that get tuition assistance from the Florida Tax Credit scholarship program. Businesses

get tax breaks for donating money to private organizations that give children scholarships to go to private schools. Schoolchoice advocates say the program allows low-income students who are mainly African-American and Latino to expand their education choices. But critics say the program allows for corporations to funnel state money into private, sometimes religious, schools with the purpose of undermining the public education system.

During his speech to Congress last week, Trump said education was the civil rights issue of our time.

“Betsy’s going to lead the charge, right?” Trump said in Orlando, referring to DeVos, according to a White House press pool report.

“You bet,” DeVos responded.

After booing the president’s motorcade, Wendy Doromal, president of the Orange County Classroom Teachers Association, told the crowd the union doesn’t want taxpayer money diverted to charter schools that aren’t held to the same standards as public schools.

“Trump is here in Orlando not to lift up public schools,” she says. “He is here to push his anti-public school agenda, to tear down public school. He’s here today under the guise of giving parents a choice. The only choice he wants is a private school.”

The West Art District makes an eloquent statement on the power of art to build community

he streets of west Orlando have been engulfed by a behemoth construction zone for two and a half years – a construction zone that eventually yielded the new Orlando City soccer stadium – but many new visitors to the Parramore neighborhood won’t venture too far past the monolith. That’s a shame, because just west of the stadium a neighborhood renaissance is blossoming.

A little over a decade ago, the city of Orlando initiated Pathways for Parramore, an initiative to revitalize the historic community with new business investment, increased housing options, reduced crime, expanded educational opportunities and more public transportation options.

Parramore’s reputation for high rates of drug trafficking and other crime still lingers, even as the community and the city work to show the greater population of Orlando the vitality that lives on these streets.

That vitality is exploding a couple of blocks west of the Orlando City Stadium, tucked away amid residences, auto body shops and warehouses. The West Art District is a 50,000-square-foot warehouse at 1011 W. Central Blvd. that has been repurposed in a very unexpected manner. As visitors approach the block, their eyes are greeted with a vibrant symphony of colors. Every square inch of the former Auto Machine and Parts Co. is covered in graffiti, but this street art isn’t the vandalism of delinquents tagging an abandoned building. As you cruise past local artist Lemus’ 13-foot-high black-and-white portrait of Damian Marley, surrounded by brightly hued superheroes, dragons and pandas, it dawns on you that the West Art District is the newest and perhaps most authentic expression of community art in our city.

urchased in late 2016 by private investors, the West Art District is a collection of warehouses that are being constantly decorated and redecorated by street artists both local and global. Harrison Rai, a 28-year-old industrial developer and real estate agent, doubles as one of the primary property managers at the site. It was his idea to transform the bare-bones warehouse into a creative space.

“We had the vision of an art district already,” Rai says. “We pretty much had this vision of developing this area to make it into an art district.”

Rai, who grew up in Orlando, looked at the empty warehouses and saw more than a development opportunity; he realized that he had been presented with a literal blank canvas. He decided to turn the former automotive parts machining factory into an open space for artistic expression.

He got in contact with a local graffiti artist who goes simply by Noun, and together they devised a plan to develop the space into a haven for artists.

On Jan. 3, they put out an open invitation for people of any age, style or skill level to come paint on any open space they could find on the walls. Using social media, they invited the public to come watch the artists create murals live.

Within three days, every single wall was covered.

It’s been six weeks since that first day.

Since then, the West Art District (located on the corner of West Central Boulevard and Westmoreland Drive) has grown, and continues to do so with an incredible momentum. Their Instagram page boasts

more than 1,300 followers, and is updated daily with pictures and videos of the art being created that day. The invitation to create is open and free of charge, so artists from as far away as Europe are requesting space on the walls in which to create.

“I’m getting messages from Spain, Tokyo, Russia, Japan. It’s crazy. People from around the world are actually looking at this,” Rai says. He and Noun, now West Art District’s art director, were initially taken aback by the response.

Painting is by appointment only these days, and the demand is very high. “I’ve got maybe 30 artists here every week,” Rai says.

To help them establish a sense of organization within this accelerated growth, the pair maintains a database that functions as a log of the artists who have contributed to the walls thus far. Although the database is not available to the general public, it helps Rai and Noun determine when an artist can come paint, where exactly the art goes, and details how much time and effort went into each piece.

As a result of the high demand for space, the walls are constantly in flux.

Some pieces have been up since the inception of the project, like the Statue of Liberty wearing a gas mask adorning the front of the building, which was created by Noun. Others may only be up for a week before they are painted over, making room for a new creation.

When it comes to recycling available space, there is a method to the madness.

Noun is the deciding authority on where new pieces go. A Bronx native, he grew up in a New York borough that has CONTINUED ON PAGE 15

long been a hub for stunning displays of street art. A follower of the famous TATS Cru, he studied graffiti and tagging religiously in his youth, and learned to respect the art form, the culture that surrounded it and the unspoken rules of this underground form of expression.

When he moved to Central Florida to be closer to his children, he brought his love of graffiti with him, and was able to offer an authentic perspective to the creation of this venue.

“For those that don’t know the rules in graffiti, I use what they call a pyramid system to determine the duration of each piece, and how long it should run,” Noun says, describing the process he uses to decide which spaces get repurposed and which pieces remain on display. “It goes: tags, hollows, fills, straight letters, text, characters, murals, productions. You can cover going down, but not the other way around. A tag can’t cover a production.

That’s the rules of the game. If not, it’s pretty much a form of disrespect.”

As you tour the facility, it’s clear to see why these rules are in place. An intricate, colorful depiction of Michelangelo’s David by the artist Revel graces the western face of the building. On a small structure located on the east facing block, an intricate lion by Miami-born artist Chaya Av is on display. On the opposite side of the wall, a breathtaking portrait of a woman by Eduardo Smet faces West Central Boulevard. Each piece reflects a painstaking attention to detail and thus is here to stay, for the time being.

Residents from the surrounding area have embraced the space as an integral part of their community, a testament to the fact that the impact of the West Art District goes far beyond aesthetics.

Rai and Noun both attest proudly to the informal youth programs that they’ve

gradually launched since development began. Children from the neighborhood flock to see new art and tend to the small container garden in front. Parents bring their children to the district to keep them out of trouble in a neighborhood that historically has higher rates of crime than many other areas of the city.

Rai tells me about a student who practices at the West Art District on a regular basis. “We took him in,” he says. “His mom brought him over here. He’d gotten arrested for graffiti. So instead of him being on the street, now he just spends his time here. Now he doesn’t get in trouble.”

To promote a sense of community, they even offer scheduled one-hour lessons to anyone interested in dabbling in street art. Noun doubles as the resident art instructor, tutoring students of all demographics. They use a small alley tucked away within the parcel as a practice wall for novice painters. Most of their students are teens, many from the neighborhood, but the appointments are open to anyone, regardless of skill level or age.

“My oldest student is about 70,” Noun says. “I pretty much try to teach them how to turn your aerosol-can cap into any other medium. … A pencil, a pen, a paintbrush. It’s just another form of paint, you know?”

Their goal is to help artists improve their talents and eventually learn to make a living from this art form.

“Eventually I want all these kids to learn how to monetize their skill and become commercial painters,” Rai says.

“These kids could actually make money because all these people see what we’re doing here and they want us to paint their restaurants, their businesses.”

Church Street, is one such business. Bill Palmer is the owner of the store, which has been in his family since 1947.

“I asked them if they wanted to do graffiti art on the side of my store that faces Westmoreland. We’re going for a fresh look.

We always try to adapt to the changes that are going on,” Palmer says.

A man with deeply rooted history in the area, he recognizes the change coming to West Orlando and wholeheartedly embraces it. He says that the art district has “definitely” had a positive impact on the surrounding area. One indication in his eyes is the transformation of local foot traffic.

“There’s a whole lot more people biking here on the weekends,” Palmer says. “That’s just nice to see.”

W

est Art District is still in its development stages, and isn’t officially open to the public yet. Rai and the other developers involved in the project are hoping to have all the spaces – which are currently very raw – renovated and operational before the end of the year.

Many of the spaces have already been leased to local businesses, Rai says. Among the future tenants he plans to work with are an art gallery, a restaurant and brewery, a co-working space, a yoga and CrossFit studio, several tech start-ups and a business incubator – the latter to be headed by Rai himself.

One of West Art’s main initiatives is to give back to community in which they are located. Auto Machine and Parts Co., which occupied the warehouses for more than two decades, employed dozens of people from the neighboring streets for years.

When the factory finally ceased operations last summer, those who were left found themselves out of work. Rai and the owners of the facility intend to revive the trend of employing locals by going to them first when they begin seeking staff to run the finished operation.

“This business here, before it closed down eight or nine months ago, used to give a lot of people that lived around here jobs for the past 20-25 years,” Rai says of 16

his predecessor. Since he’s been working on West Art, he says, “I actively got to know everybody in the neighborhood. Once I get this all developed, those are my first employees.”

Located one block from new Orlando City Soccer Stadium, the establishment of the West Art District comes at a very convenient time for the residents of West Orlando. The Downtown Development Bureau’s CRA district boundary is at the corner of Central and Westmoreland across from the West Art District, so Rai, Noun and the owners of the facility are, in essence, picking up where the DDB leaves off.

By developing the West Art District, all those involved are continuing in the revitalization efforts of this community that was once viewed as a loss. Palmer sees the change in the neighborhood and is eager to embrace the positive change he sees on the horizon.

“I’ve seen it in other neighborhoods that have done revitalizations,” Palmer says.

Palmer and others in the community are excited about the change that Rai and his team are bringing to Parramore, and are especially keen on their emphasis on the local. In creating a space for the artists of Orlando (and Miami, and New York, and well beyond) to come and create freely, they have managed to also gather the collective spirit of a small group of individuals who live and work near the growing business district, and remind them that they are integral to the success of the place they call home. Placing the art district in the middle of the western neighborhoods is a reminder to those individuals that Orlando has not forgotten about them.

In turn, by allowing the West Art District to flourish in their community, these citizens are giving way to the city itself to take on new and exciting projects. Their community is embracing and encouraging change, at the hands of a few very talented individuals who have decided that the best way to encourage the beauty in Orlando is not to whitewash the people and neighborhoods who were here first, but to give them the recognition and respect they deserve.

BY SETH KUBERSKY The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts made headlines multiple times over the past month, for various reasons. It started in early February with the Fairwinds Broadway in Orlando 2017-2018 season announcement, which will bring a robust lineup of recent hits and old favorites to the Walt Disney Theater, starting in September with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I. The series will include On Your Feet!, Love Never Dies: The Phantom Returns, The Book of Mormon, School of Rock, Disney’s The Lion King, Waitress, Something Rotten and Rent. But the big news is that Hamilton is coming to the 2018-2019 season, with current subscribers getting first crack at those sure-to-be-scarce seats.

The calendar may insist that

spring won’t have sprung until March 20, but the season has already been launched at full speed in Orlando’s theme parks.

On April 6, Universal Orlando officially opens its Jimmy Fallon simulator, which I’ll have a “soft opening” preview of next week. That’s merely the warning shot before the dueling late-May debuts of Universal’s Volcano Bay water park and Disney’s Avatar-inspired land at Animal Kingdom, setting up the biggest summer showdown since Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Diagon Alley both premiered in 2014.

But before that big battle arrives (with its attending battalions of spring break tourists), locals can enjoy seasonal festivals focused on drinking and eating at each of the major resorts right now. I’ve yet to visit SeaWorld’s inaugural Seven Seas Food Festival, held on Saturdays through May 13, which pairs international drinks and dishes with a concert lineup that runs the gamut from Styx and ZZ Top to Oscar D’León and Grupo Manía. But I have explored both Disney’s and Universal’s current annual events – both as invited press and as an ordinary customer – and managed to emerge with my stomach and liver (mostly) intact.

EPCOT FLOWER & GARDEN FESTIVAL

It was only seven weeks ago that I was extolling Epcot’s new Festival of the Arts (which will return in 2018), and we’re already in the midst of its 24th annual Flower & Garden Festival. This year, the popular event has been expanded to an epic 90 days, stretching all the way to May 29 and requiring Disney’s horticulturists to cycle through two seasons of foliage during the Festival’s run. Disney’s media event on the opening Saturday featured a beer flight seminar with certified cicerone Nikie Cassoni (hot tip: Maui Brewing’s Pineapple Mana is in short supply but

Epcot’s got plenty), along with samples of dishes from the park’s kitchen kiosks, which have now proliferated to nearly the same number employed during the Food & Wine fest.

From this year’s new food selections, the Florida Fresh carne asada – richly seasoned and served atop a tasty black bean cake – was the clear standout, alongside the warm wild berry buckle with pepper-berry gelato (which tastes faintly like Pepto-Bismol). In general, however, presentation and portion size seemed to take a step backward from the Arts festival offerings; the Northern Bloom sea scallops were small and overcooked compared to their Arts counterparts, and nothing at Flower & Garden compares to the elaborate plating of the Arts charcuterie board.

While eating your way around World Showcase, you’ll find most of your favorite topiaries – more and more with detailed makeovers on their formerly blank green faces – along with several spectacular new displays, starting with the photogenic Maypole at Epcot’s entrance. The headliner acts in the America Gardens theater (the Pointer Sisters this weekend, followed

by Simple Plan and Plain White T’s) get all the attention, but don’t overlook the seminars inside the Festival Center, aka the old Wonders of Life attraction; the highlight of my day was meeting Captain Ron, an adorable sea turtle egg-sniffing pocket beagle who will appear as an environmental “ambassadog” during the weekend of March 31.

UNIVERSAL MARDI GRAS

A few miles up I-4, Universal opened its own annual rite of spring on February, and just like Epcot’s event, Mardi Gras has expanded this year, with parades every night through March 25. There’s not much new to report on the food front: The traditional jambalaya, gumbo and andouille are as good as ever, but I couldn’t find the spicy mac & cheese served to the media for sale to the public, and this year’s specialty cocktails are over-sweetened and underpowered for my taste. While noshing at the French Quarter food court, keep your ears open for authentic N’awlins brass bands, who are appearing organically on Universal’s sidewalks instead of being stuck on a stage.

Mardi Gras saw other notable entertainment improvements this year, starting with the half-dozen brand-new parade floats.

Themed around mythological creatures, the newest parade units feature monumental sculptures, dynamic LED lighting, even some explosive pyrotechnic effects.

But it’s the live performers who turn the procession into a party, and speaking as a former Mardi Gras talent supervisor, this year’s cast is among the most motivated and energetic I’ve seen, from the moment they begin mid-afternoon meet-and-greets until the final “Feet don’t fail me now” of the night.

As the icing on my festival-filled weekend, I rode a Mardi Gras float for the first time in nearly 20 years, and happily learned that throwing beads at screaming throngs never gets old. There’s a lot of “hurry up and wait” involved in being a volunteer (check-in is over an hour before step-off ) so I don’t recommend it to tourists on a tight time schedule, but all annual passholders should enter the free Mardi Gras signup lottery at universalorlando. com for a perspective on the party they’ll never forget. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

A month later, on Monday, March 6, the Dr. Phillips Center finally broke ground on the long-awaited Steinmetz Hall, a 1,700-seat acoustic venue intended for Orlando’s Philharmonic and Ballet.

Construction of the Center’s second phase, which is estimated to cost $237.5 million (including a $10 million contingency for overruns) and be completed in 2020, was given final funding approval by Orlando’s City Council on Feb. 27, but the Dr. Phillips Center still has $14.7 million left to raise.

Between those two big events, WFTV published two versions of a consultant’s assessment commissioned for the Dr. Phillips Center that show the report was revised to delete or downplay criticism of CEO Kathy Ramsberger. References to “hostile” leadership and the option of replacing the CEO were removed between the June 2016 report (marked “final”) and the August revision. You can read the documents on our website.

aitland’s restaurant scene, anchored by such long-serving mainstays as Antonio’s, Athena’s Roasted Chicken, Kappy’s, Buca di Beppo and Seoul Garden, was in dire need of a culinary transfusion. So when ShishCo. Mezze & Grill, Francesco’s Ristorante and Luke’s Kitchen + Bar opened their doors, the injection of fresh blood couldn’t have been more welcome. Hell, Maitland is poised to become a dining hot spot, with Teak Neighborhood Grill opening in the Village at Lake Lily next month and Clay Miller’s food hall and restaurant moving into the Maitland City Centre in 2018.

Drawing far less fanfare is iPho, a no-fuss noodle joint that quietly shimmied into the space previously occupied by Brown’s Deli. The interior? Well, glee-inducing it’s not. Sketches of pastoral life on those stark, morose walls don’t exactly pep up the atmo, and neither does the high TV-tosquare-foot ratio.

From the menu, drab, just-passable summer rolls ($4) with fried tofu didn’t buoy spirits any either. The requisite crunchy freshness just wasn’t there, and the ingredients seemed loosely loaded (not snugly

Kong: Skull Island

BY STE V E S C H N E I D E R OPENING THIS WEEK: Kong: Skull Island Orlando-area audiences could be excused for feeling slightly nonplussed by the arrival of Skull Island (the movie), since Skull Island (the ride) has already been open here for more than half a year. Adding to the sense of disorientation, Skull Island (the movie) isn’t even a Universal product, the House of Fallon having voluntarily allowed the project to go to Warner Brothers to facilitate an upcoming crossover with Warners’ own Godzilla. (People in the back, let me hear ya: “Shared universe!”)

Anyway, Skull Island (the movie) is a period piece set in 1973, with a band of Apocalypse Now-esque adventurers arriving at Skull Island (the geographical location) and discovering the freaks of nature that reside there. What that means in practical terms is that Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson and the rest of this crew encountered King Kong and his pals three years before the Dino De Laurentiisdispatched team from 1976 landed on Skull Island (the narrative construct) in search of oil.

Ergo, Jessica Lange’s entire career now never existed. And ergo ergo, all future episodes of FX’s Feud will consist of an hour of Susan Sarandon punching herself in the head. Listen, it makes sense to me. (PG-13) The Ottoman Lieutenant It’s being called the

[ concert preview ] You Blew It had put out another record like Grow Up, Dude or Keep Doing What You’re Doing, they easily could’ve played themselves out. Instead, they dialed back the crunching guitars and power chords in favor of lighter melodies and flourishes of piano.

Just as You Blew It have evolved musically, so has Tanner Jones changed as a musician and a person. Abendrot was written at a tumultuous time in his life, one in which, he says, the pressure of a new album brought out the worst in him.

“I kind of stopped taking care of myself, physically and mentally. I let things bore into my skin and stay there,” he explains calmly. Jones calls writing songs “both the therapy and the cause,” and delves into the song that shares its name with the cemetery where we’re talking.

“To calm myself, I’d come ride around here on my bike and take time to let everything sink in. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but it’s just quiet here,” he observes. GWADCIP$, LIL INDIES

There’s a new – and very now – weekly residency in the Indies mix. On Sundays, the vibe’s alive with young Orlando producer Gwadcip$ (Feb. 26), whose work is different and more live than the typical DJ set. Using a sampler, he actively chops, drops and tweaks his own original, sample-based music. It’s a left-field union of hip-hop and electronics that works the dynamic between halcyon, disembodied samples and sharp, stuttering beats. His sound is chill, tasteful and future-minded, something you’re more likely to see in the electronic-friendly Milk District. It’s a fresh look for Lil Indies and it’s now every Sunday.

CHRISTIAN LOPEZ AND POPPSY COLE, WILL’S PUB

Editing is everything.

Although West Virginia’s Christian Lopez (Feb. 26) is young, he packs a broad cross-section of American roots traditions (country, Southern rock, blues, rock & roll). The kid’s got skill, craft and heart; he just needs to figure out where to focus it all. Seeing his versatility on stage, it’s clear what he’s capable of. What’s less clear is who he is. Lopez may be able to do it all, but he’d be more than just the sum of his influences with some judicious editing.

Still, though his recordings tend to leverage the more obvious aspects of his youth, he actually cuts deeper live with some needed grit, the kind that could hang with

Opener Poppsy Cole is a new local band. They, too, could distinguish themselves by ironing out some identity issues.

What they do best is wide-swinging, straight-ahead country-rock. If they could exorcise some of the bar-band tendencies that muddle their sound, they’d be on their way. Incorporating some of the sweet pedal steel on their recordings into their live show would be a big and immediate leap in the right direction. But besides that and some added seasoning, they’re already sitting on the fundamentals of good songs and singer JB Reed’s soul power.

AOIFE O’DONOVAN, PLAZA LIVE

The three-part Women in Song series by the Orlando Philharmonic just concluded before a full house (March 1).

The finale featured Aoife O’Donovan (said: “ee-fah”), fitting since it was this very event last month that yielded the revelation that the eminent musician is now local.

Probably best known as frontwoman of acclaimed modern bluegrass band Crooked Still, O’Donovan is highly

regarded in literate folk circles with a list of collaborators ranging from Alison Krauss to Yo-Yo Ma and a current appointment in the house band on legendary radio show A Prairie Home Companion. As such, her progressive Americana sound has a folk foundation but with fine sensibility, studious craft and indie credentials (she’s on Yep Roc Records).

As O’Donovan herself noted, it was a particularly significant occasion because it was her first local show as a local.

Besides her own trio, she also enjoyed the deluxe accompaniment of a four-piece string section from the Phil, a hallmark of this series. And, naturally, her performance benefited from some extra special features like a duet with her husband, Orlando Phil conductor Eric Jacobsen, on cello. But the heart of it all was her rich, supple singing. Neither twee nor ostentatious, it’s a voice that’s confident in just its grace.

Although threads of American and Celtic folk are manifest, O’Donovan abstracts and re-contextualizes them in a modern singer-songwriter language alongside indie rock textures. With it, she gets personal. Her songs are the soundtrack of an inner world that’s introspective but deeply inhabited and examined in detail, like a small house whose walls tell of entire lives lived within.

It was a beautiful and locally apropos way to complete the Women in Song trilogy, proving it one of the most earnest and adventurous audience outreach programs seen in a long time. This was the Phil’s first run of the series and, luckily, it was successful enough that they’re doing it again in their 2017-2018 season. Allison Crutchfield and the Fizz

After more than a decade of throwing down in a number of bands beloved in indie rock, alternative and punk circles, guitarist-singersongwriter Allison Crutchfield finally steps out on her own with perhaps her most intriguing and essential set of songs yet. Crutchfield came to indie renown with her pop-punk project with twin sister Kate, the churning and memorably named P.S. Elliott. Crutchfield then struck out on her own with Swearin’, releasing albums on Merge, and pitching in on Kate’s solo project, the blissful noise of Waxahatchee. As Swearin’ ground to a halt amid personal upheavals, Crutchfield rebounded with a suite of songs that mark not just a stylistic departure from previous works but also the most honest expression of her songwriting voice yet. The songs that make up Tourist in This Town are a melancholic, bruised-yet-unbroken mix of synth-pop and classic alt-rock swoons, all redolent of Blake Babies, Breeders, the Cure and Heavenly. The feeling of losing a loved one, especially to murder, can be hard to talk about immediately. We saw that in Orlando after the massacre that killed 49 people at the gay nightclub Pulse. Some wanted to talk about their loved ones and tell their stories in front of news cameras right away. A few people, afraid after the world had shown them terror, hid inside their homes for days – sometimes even for months. Others were too heartbroken to talk. Consequently, not every story was told as the media covered Pulse in the weeks after June 12, 2016. Almost nine months after the tragedy, the community has an opportunity to change that. StoryCorps, a New York-based project that travels the country recording and sharing American stories, is working with WMFE 90.7 FM this week in Orlando to preserve the stories of people directly impacted by the massacre along with stories from the broader Central Florida region. The “Taking Your Pulse” project has set up several spaces around town to participate in the collection, or you can do it directly from your phone using the StoryCorps mobile app. The project’s main event is a community conversation at the hospital where many of the victims and survivors were taken. WMFE’s Matthew Peddie hosts a panel with survivors, first responders, doctors, nurses, LGBTQ and Latinx community leaders, and city officials, including Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orlando Police Chief John Mina. Granted, it’s still hard for some to talk about Pulse without getting a lump in their throats, but this project helps honor victims’ legacies and is a definite step on the path of healing. – Monivette Cordeiro

With the recent, unwelcome news that a certain local venue has maybe, possibly fallen in the line of duty, the search for new, alternative, safe spaces for shows takes on a bit more of a hint of urgency. To that end, it’s heartening to see that upstart bookers Ugly Orange are throwing their first show at the Henao Contemporary Center on Edgewater Drive this Friday. Ugly Orange tests the gallery show waters – a natural fit for a promoting outfit that regularly merges visual and sonic expression – with an album release party for Tampa’s haunted pop ensemble FayRoy. The new album, Heaven at Twenty-Seven, expands their sound ever outward, flirting with more baroque arrangements and thoughtful lyrical schemes/themes. Local sonic support comes from indie-shoegaze outfit Transcendental Telecom and the always-surprising This Heatstyle vibes of young’uns RV. Art music for art people. – MM

Though ABC’s short-lived reboot, The Muppets, may have fizzled out last year, the one thing we did learn from the Office-aping sitcom was that the Muppets really don’t need to be updated. Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest of the gang are at their best having wacky misadventures, usually in the pursuit of saving a theater from going under. This special presentation from Heather Henson’s Ibex Puppetry uses the best Muppet vehicle, 1979’s The Muppet Movie, as a springboard for an interactive experience somewhat akin to the beloved MuppetVision 3D show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Ibex uses live music, puppetry, shadow-acting and creative kites to bring the road-trip origin story of the Muppets to life. Plus, you’ll get to sing along with the Muppets to the classic soundtrack. In a lot of ways, Paula Poundstone is different than most comedians, but the most obvious one is: She’s happy. The 30-year road veteran is best known these days for her spot on the panel of NPR game show Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me, but she never stopped doing stand-up, even as she raised almost a dozen special-needs foster children, adopting three, along with pets including at least “10 cats, a big stupid dog, two tadpoles, a bearded dragon lizard, and a bunny.” Life’s not all bearded dragons and bunnies, though; Poundstone was arrested for drunk driving with kids in the car, and temporarily lost custody while she went through rehab. But the fun of tap-dancing, she says now (seriously, look at her Twitter – she’s really into the tapping) is one of the things that keeps her on the sunny side. Though glam-icon-turned-suave-showman Bryan Ferry’s outward flattening of women into virtual lust objects really “should make the cognoscenti think,” it would be a mistake to dismiss this posh talker as a dandy. Ferry’s beauty queens staged in calculated strain across plush album covers and promos are not uncomplicated pinups, just as his adoration doesn’t attempt invulnerability. From the disposable darling of “In Every Dream Home a Heartache” to Manifesto’s mute party of mannequins and “Love Is the Drug” made jazzy for Baz Luhrmann’s overblown Gatsby, the former Roxy Music frontman has been caught up in a love affair with the hollow pit of opulence throughout his four-and-a-half-decade-long career. Even Ferry’s rich cover catalog, with a submissive “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” heart-rending “Song to the Siren” and near-manic “I Love How You Love Me,” drips isolated intensity. Set to perform favorites from parallel solo and group careers – including his latest release, Avonmore (2014), a return to the melancholy of Roxy’s final album, Avalon (1982) – the suave-as-ever 71-year-old’s tremulous voice remains utterly singular.
