IN MEMORIAM: THE ORLANDO 49 Every week between now and the one-year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shootings, Orlando Weekly will profile a person killed on June 12, 2016. This week: Frank Hernández Escalante Tattooed on his left bicep in black ink, Frank Hernández kept a saying close to his heart: “Love has no gender.”

The 27-yearold who grew up in Weslaco, Texas, was proud of his identity, often posting pictures with rainbow colors or his “GAY O.K.” shirt. Shortly after graduating high school in 2006, Hernández started working at Calvin Klein, where he rose through the ranks to become manager. Two years ago, he left Texas for the chance to manage a store in Orlando.

He was making a life in the City Beautiful with his longtime boyfriend, Brett Rigas, and their two dogs.

Months before they were about to celebrate their three-year anniversary, the couple went to the gay nightclub Pulse for a night of dancing and fun. When the shooting

began, the two men lost each other in the dark. Rigas escaped out of the club with his life on June 12, but Hernández and 48 others did not.

“He’s a little goofball,” Rigas told the Advocate magazine after his boyfriend’s death. “He was always making people laugh.

Everybody loved him.”

In his obituary, his family and friends described him as an easy laugh, someone who was the “life of the party.” He loved Beyoncé, dancing, traveling to South Padre Island and Mexican food. He was close to his family, especially his grandparents who helped raise him.

“They took my big brother away from me, they took him away from us,” his sister Julissa Leal Escalante wrote on Facebook. “Frankie we love you, we will always love you and we will never forget you. You will always be in my heart.”

The day after Hernández’s death, his 15year best friend Linda Garza posted that they were supposed to grow old together and yell at each other’s kids when they got in trouble.

“I’m broken and torn and can’t deal with the agony of not having you in my life but please just always remember that I will see you again,” Garza writes. “You will now be my light that shines each morning and my stars that light up the night sky.”

Pulse survivors and families sue gunman’s widow and employer: Victims’ families and survivors of the shooting at the gay nightclub Pulse are suing the gunman’s jailed widow and employer, saying they did nothing to stop the massacre where 49 people were killed even though they knew Omar Mateen intended to commit violent acts. The complaint says years before June 12, 2016, the international security company G4S applied for a concealed weapons license for Mateen and allowed him to keep it even after they learned the FBI was investigating him. The lawsuit also alleges Mateen’s widow helped him scout out Pulse for an attack and purchase firearms and ammunition.

Seminole Clerk’s employee resigns after saying Ayala should be ‘hung from a tree’: Stan McCullars, an assistant finance director at the Seminole County Clerk of Court office, resigned after being suspended with pay for posting on Facebook that Orange-Osceola State Attorney Aramis Ayala should be “tarred and feathered if not hung from a tree.” McCullars made the comments after Ayala announced she would not pursue the death penalty for cases during her administration, including the case of murder suspect Markeith Loyd. Seminole County Clerk Grant Maloy says those comments don’t reflect his or his office’s beliefs. In some related news, House Speaker Richard Corcoran joined every other politician in the state wanting to jump on the publicity bandwagon and asked Gov. Rick Scott to further suspend Ayala after the governor already removed her from the Loyd case.

Florida man ticketed after eating pancakes in middle of intersection: Kiaron Thomas, 21, decided to live his best life last week by snacking on some pancakes with syrup on a small table smack dab in the way of Lakeland traffic.

Thomas told police it was a prank but they decided to charge him with placing an obstruction in the roadway and disrupting the free flow of traffic.

prosecutor in Florida, is decidedly in the majority. What sets her apart is that she made her intentions clear – and her intentions ran contrary to those of Rick Scott.

So Rick Scott decided that the longstanding norms granting prosecutors discretion over when to seek the death penalty no longer apply. He’ll make those decisions for you, thank you very much.

I should back up here a second and say that this is something voters should have been able to consider in November. It’s a failure of the local media and, quite frankly, of Ayala and her opponent, Jeff Ashton, that this question was never raised during the campaign. But that doesn’t change that fact that, if voters dislike Ayala’s decision here, it’s up to them to reject her in 2020. It’s not up to Rick Scott – who lost Orange County by 12 percentage points and Osceola by 8 – to make up their minds for them.

Loyd is about as unsympathetic a character as you can find: an accused cop-killer who allegedly murdered his pregnant ex-girlfriend. If you’re making an argument for capital punishment, he’s exhibit A. Which means he’s both a testament to the strength of Ayala’s convictions and an ideal target for Scott’s tough-oncrime posturing.

But that doesn’t change the fact that, regardless of whether Ayala is making the right decision (she is), it’s her decision to make, not Scott’s. The fact that Scott is willing to shamelessly abrogate her authority, to substitute his judgment for hers to ensure that a black man get the needle – and we are naïve to pretend there’s no racial aspect to the politics of his intervention – shows that, like in D.C., traditional norms are dead.

hings were spiraling out of control for father-and-son wrestling tandem Eddie and Mike Graham.

Tuesday night was wrestling night in Tampa. Long before the Orlando Magic or Tampa Bay Buccaneers, professional wrestlers were some of Florida’s biggest heroes.

And the Grahams were Florida wrestling royalty, the good guys (or “faces”) squaring off against a pair of bad guys (or “heels”) in front of a 6,000-strong audience at the Tampa Armory on a spring evening in 1974.

The Grahams had ruled Florida wrestling for over a decade, but this night would be about the birth of a new legend.

The match is tough and even though it’s choreographed down to the very ending, it feels real. Wrestling in Eddie Graham’s promotion, Championship Wrestling From Florida, always blurs the lines of realism, just the way Graham likes it. So far the heel team of Pak Song and Dusty Rhodes, accompanied by manager Gary Hart, is winning.

During a pivotal moment in the match, when all seems lost for the faces, Dusty Rhodes looks suddenly indecisive, hesitating as he watches Hart strangle Mike and Song put Eddie in his “Iron Claw” finishing hold. The roar of the crowd grows a little louder. And then, in one of those classic wrestling moments that straddle soap opera and athletic competition, Rhodes shuffles his feet, does a little wiggle, and

turns on his partners, saving the Graham family by leveling Song and Hart with his patented bionic elbow. The crowd, naturally, explodes.

That night, Rhodes would become the “American Dream” and rise to the level of wrestling superstar. Over the next 40 years, he would headline numerous CWF shows and other Jim Crockett Promotions events all throughout the South during the ’70s and ’80s, before being finally signed away by Vince McMahon and his World Wrestling Federation empire (later WWE or World Wrestling Entertainment). When Dusty finally turned up on WWF television programs in 1989, WWF officials outfitted him in hideous black and yellow polka dots and made him film a series of ridiculous skits poking fun at his “blue collar” persona (including one with Rhodes as spokesperson for the “Americana Butcher Shop,” somehow delivering the line “you sure can’t beat my meat,” without dying on camera). It felt like the end of an era.

Rhodes’ babyface turn in 1974, though, was a high-water mark in the history of CWF, before the promotion faded away in the mid-’80s with the death of its leader, Graham, and as McMahon’s WWF began to sign the big talent away from regional wrestling territories to come “up north.”

But while Rhodes and Graham have faded into wrestling’s past, and the sport no longer fills small arenas across the state every week, Florida can still be seen as very much the home of wrestling’s present and future.

his Sunday, April 2, the WWE, the biggest wrestling promotion in the world, returns to Orlando with their signature event, WrestleMania. It’s the third time in nine years that WWE head Vince McMahon has decided to hold WrestleMania in Florida and the second time it has been in Orlando. WWE sits unchallenged atop the bones of the conquered regional wrestling territories that McMahon raided in the ’80s and even CONTINUED ON PAGE 12

rebranded “wrestling” in its own image as “sports entertainment.” WrestleMania is a symbol of that success, WWE’s annual victory lap.

Back in the days before the WWE was the top dog in the yard, wrestling comprised a bunch of smaller regional and mostly autonomous territories. Every part of the country had its own wrestling promotion, with the majority of them operating under the loosely organized National Wrestling Alliance banner. The territories included World Class Championship Wrestling in Texas, American Wrestling Association in Minnesota and the northern states, and Florida’s own Championship Wrestling from Florida.

Wrestling at its core is live theater, but with characters costumed in spandex and the stage a 20-by-20-foot canvas with three ropes and four posts at each corner. While experiencing WWE’s brand of wrestling today is akin to going to the Technicolor spectacle of an arena rock show, its core elements are still the same as 40 years ago; the hero versus the heel. Perhaps nobody understood this better in wrestling than Eddie Graham, head of Florida’s original wrestling territory, Championship Wrestling From Florida, during the glory days of the ’70s and ’80s.

With a shock of white hair and a deep tan, Eddie Graham looked like he had stepped off the set of a Hollywood feature. Graham came to Florida in 1961 after years of wrestling in the northeast, a stint that included tag team championships on one hand and a match wrestling a turkey on the other.

Graham helped run CWF with owner Clarence “Cowboy” Luttrall until taking it over completely in 1971. It was a good time to be a wrestling fan in Florida with Graham running the show. The promotion ran events regularly throughout the entire state, drawing upward of 9,000 people to their bigger matches. On Sundays, CWF would stop by Orlando and perform at the Eddie Graham Sports Complex. For the marquee shows, Graham was able to bring in outside attractions like Harley Race, Andre the Giant and Ric Flair.

“There is no comparison to what the live shows were like back then to how wrestling shows are nowadays,” remembers longtime Florida wrestling fan Barry Rose. He fondly recalls the first time his father took him to a wrestling show at the age of 8: “The arena was filled with cigarette smoke, the AC didn’t work so you could feel the heat from the wrestlers. People had their legs hanging from the rafters. It all added to the aura and ambience.”

CWF’s successful live events were bolstered by its TV show, which featured the golden voice of professional wrestling, Gordon Solie. Solie’s dry and technical 12

style of announcing gave professional wrestling a credibility that fit perfectly with the realistic style that Eddie Graham was aiming for in his matches. Graham was so adamant about keeping the realism of wrestling intact that he forbade any of his feuding wrestlers to be seen with one another outside the arena. And if one of Graham’s wrestlers was challenged to a fight by a local drunk at a bar, Graham would rather his wrestler prove his toughness with a punch than walk away from a fight.

It came as a shock and a surprise to all when Eddie Graham committed suicide on Super Bowl Sunday in 1985. After Graham’s death, CWF was run by a committee which included Mike Graham, his brother Skip Gossett, and wrestlers Dusty Rhodes and Buddy Colt. The company struggled to keep up with the changing nature of the wrestling business as fans began to favor the spectacle and bright, cartoonish characters of the WWE over the grittier wrestling that Graham’s promotion was known for.

In 1987, with the company losing money, as well as many of their stars, to WWE, and their live show attendance dwindling, Mike Graham sold the floundering business to Jim Crockett Promotions. CWF became another casualty in WWE’s ’80s crusade to dominate wrestling on a national stage and put all regional territories out of business.

Graham would later sell the CWF tape library to the WWE in 2007.

Steven would also commit suicide. The Graham family tragedy closed one chapter on wrestling in Florida, but the story didn’t end; it continues at Full Sail University with NXT.

E

very two months, hundreds of people fill Full Sail University’s largest live venue to watch the legacy of the American Dream. Dusty Rhodes has been dead for a couple of years now, but his influence in NXT lives on. Rhodes made his biggest latter-day impact at Full Sail, training the upcoming crop of hopeful WWE superstars. After Rhodes passed away in 2015 of stomach cancer, WWE created a yearly tag team tournament in NXT fittingly named the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

At an NXT show at Full Sail Live, there is an energy and buzz that comes from thinking you are about to witness the next big thing. As an official WWE developmental brand, NXT has consistently touted itself as the future of professional wrestling and as “a revolution.”

Before NXT was the place to find the next sport-entertainment prospects, potential WWE superstars honed their craft at Florida Championship Wrestling’s facility in Tampa. FCW had a brief five-year run as one of WWE’s developmental territories.

Although FCW was not around for very long, its alumni are a who’s who of WWE superstars. Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Cesaro are just a handful of the wrestlers who fine-tuned their craft in Florida. “The FCW Arena was a small

warehouse in Tampa,” recalls Cesaro. “FCW had two rings, 50 chairs, and no AC during the Florida summers.

It felt shuttered off from the rest of the world.”

An NXT card feels like a mix of the current WWE product and a scrappy independent show. There is an abundance of the lights and loud entrance music and bright characters that the WWE is known for. But the crowd size is less than 1,000 strong - diehard fanatics who will gleefully chant “N-X-T” in approval of a good match - and the wrestlers take time to meet the fans before and after matches. The WWE Performance Center in Orlando now allows the public to take tours of the facility for a chance to see where their wrestlers train.

If it feels like Orlando is becoming a second home for the WWE, there is something to that. “We have a strong relationship and we value their partnership,” says Kirk Wingerson, marketing manager for City of Orlando Venues. “The NXT performance center shows they have faith in this market and it’s been a successful operation for WWE. That this is all happening in our backyard is a real boon for our city.”

Head NXT trainer Matt Bloom has been with the WWE off-and-on for 18 years.

He did a lengthy stint wrestling in Japan, where he won several championships in tag team competition. Bloom retired from in-ring work in 2014 and became a trainer for NXT. “I’m helping the talent in NXT become the best that they can be,” Bloom says of his role. “We have talent from all over the world with different backgrounds.

We have fitness buffs, bodybuilders, former football players, and I have to bring the absolute best out of them.”

Bloom and his team have done an impressive job. There are a staggering 17 wrestlers on the WrestleMania card who first trained in Florida at either FCW or NXT before making the jump to the main WWE roster. Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, and Cesaro all started in developmental territory FCW while Kevin Owens, Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, Enzo Amore, Big Cass and Neville all cut their teeth in NXT.

f NXT is the place for wrestling’s future and Florida is home to wrestling’s past, then Orlando is ground zero for wrestling now over the next few days. This weekend, wrestling’s biggest event is coming home to Florida again. There are 12 confirmed matches on the card, including eight bouts with championship gold on the line, a WrestleMania record. Wrestling fans will no doubt get their fix as critics are predicting the show to run an astounding five hours.

The WrestleMania main event features WWE Universal Champion Goldberg, who returned to WWE in November after a 13-year hiatus, going up against former WWE & UFC Champion Brock Lesnar.

Despite the combined age of these two warriors being 89 years, the buildup has been as intense as any WWE main event in recent memory. The grizzled veteran Goldberg has gotten the best of Brock Lesnar in every match between the two, including their first encounter in 2004 at WrestleMania 20 and a quick, onesided affair back in November that was Goldberg’s first match back from retirement. The disastrous November bout shocked fans, and the two legends have been on a collision course ever since.

Other high-profile bouts on the card include WWE Champion Bray Wyatt against third-generation superstar Randy Orton – whose father, Bob Orton Jr., got his start in wrestling as “Young Mr. Wrestling” in CFW. John Cena is teaming up with his longtime girlfriend, Nikki Bella, to go up against another wrestling couple, The Miz and Maryse, in a mixed tag match. The Women’s Championship will be defended in a triple-threat match between three women, all of whom got their starts in NXT: champion Bayley, Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks. And in one of the more anticipated matches of the evening, The Undertaker will be competing in his unprecedented 25th WrestleMania event when he goes up against Roman Reigns.

While WrestleMania is no doubt the reason why an estimated 100,000 fans are making the trek to Orlando, there are at least 20 other wrestling-themed events happening during the week. In addition to WWE-sponsored events like the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony on Friday night at the Amway Center, WrestleMania Fan Axxess at the Orange County Convention Center, and NXT Takeover Orlando on Saturday night, there are dozens of independent wrestling promotions that will be riding on WrestleMania’s coattails.

Wrestling fans will get a chance to see fresh new faces that may one day be performing under the WWE umbrella.

of Honor, Chikara, and What Culture Professional Wrestling – also referred to as WCPW – will all present wrestling cards in Orlando during WrestleMania week. The U.K.-based promotion WCPW is less than a year old and has never put on a show in the United States, but they see it as a great opportunity to get in front of new fans.

“You can say we’re an ambitious company,” says WCPW founding member Adam Blampied. “We are bringing a card of great wrestling, trying to compete in the huge circus that is WrestleMania weekend. This is the best weekend of the year to be a wrestling fan.”

Despite all the other events happening around town this week, WrestleMania is the reason for the season, and city leaders have touted the good this will do for Orlando. “We are the American Dream,” Mayor Buddy Dyer said recently at the unveiling of a giant WWE replica belt in downtown Orlando, according to the Orlando Sentinel. “It’s like a Super Bowl, with people from around the country and around the world coming to be part of the experience,” gushed Dyer.

Last April’s WrestleMania in Dallas generated $170.4 million in economic impact from visitors to the city and surrounding areas, according to figures released by the mayors of Dallas and Arlington, Texas.

That number is the highest of any event in WWE history, but with an extra day of WWE programming as well as the ancillary events happening throughout the city, that record could fall in Orlando.

he old-school territories are long gone. A housing development now sits where the old Eddie Graham Sports Complex used to be. And despite how huge wrestling has grown in the last 40 years, some of the old fans swear that it’s just not the same. The magic that filled smaller venues seems to have been forgotten in today’s WWE. “There was a believability factor in the old days that just isn’t there today.” says Barry Rose. “The WWE wrestlers are better athletes than what we had in Florida in the ‘70s but they can’t tell a story in the ring like they used to.”

But whereas old-school fans scoff at today’s WWE for not having the same heart as the wrestling that they grew up with, today’s wrestling fans are giddy with excitement for the week ahead. “The coolest thing about WrestleMania week is that every corner of the city will be taken up with some sort of wrestling.” says WCPW’s Adam Blampied. “If you explore, if you broaden your horizon, you can discover your new favorite wrestler. But after a spin on Old Town’s colorful new Ferris wheel for courage, I bought my combo ticket and dove in.

The current incarnation of Old Town’s haunted house retains most of Legends’ old structure, but is now a much darker attraction, both figuratively and literally: the original tongue-in-cheek storyline and antique period props were replaced with gorier animatronics and pitchblack corridors. I was impressed at how aggressively interactive the scareactors I encountered were – while they won’t touch you, they did sneak up behind me whispering my name – and the manager informed me that additional effects are on their way.

After making my way past Mortem Manor’s maniacs, I arrived at my real objective. The Last Ride, which has been showcased at Halloween conventions for a decade, consists of an actual coffin that’s been converted into a single-occupant attraction. Riders recline in the surprisingly comfy casket, the lid is closed, and box begins bucking as gravediggers (with inexplicable Cockney accents) bitch about bearing your body to its final repose. Air hoses tickle your feet as the worms begin to feast on your rotting flesh, which you can smell thanks to authentically awful odor dispensers.

The entire ordeal lasts under five minutes, and when the coffin opened I was left less spiritually reborn than morbidly bemused. At only $5, or $3 in combination with the $15 walk-through, Last Ride was worthwhile for the funereal photo op alone. But now, can we get the attractions innovators working on simulating things people actually want to experience? hile the hype surrounding Hunger Street Tacos may have subsided, the lingering effects painted and perfumed by the streets of Mexico City (Avenida Toluca in particular) nevertheless remain. Granted, the olfactory splendor of cheaper cuts and nasty bits is absent – owners/brothers Joe and David Creech recognize this is still Winter Park after all – but I’m not one to bleat and grouse about the waft of fancier cuts like seared brisket. You won’t smell pork skin frying either, but you will find it hard to keep fingers from pinching off bits of chicharrón de queso ($5). This cheese dosa of sorts, served with guac and fiery salsa, makes a far better sharing plate at this cheery taqueria than “street chips” ($2.50), which amount to potato chips drizzled with hot sauce and lime. Plus the chips are prepped behind the counter by the person taking your order, which only serves to slow down the queue.

A different counter configuration hasn’t really improved the efficiency of the ordering process either. If anything, the snaking line appears to move even slower than the days when BB Junction and 4Rivers Smokehouse called the space home. And the parking? Oof. Needless to say, when/if

cheese stuffed inside a nicely charred quesadilla ($5.90) is another meatless winner, and the subtle hints of zucchini and yellow squash aren’t bullied by the mix of sautéed onions, garlic and salsa roja either.

But more often than not, I find myself gravitating towards HST’s tostadas ($4.70).

The Texas Bloody Martini throws in Tito’s Handmade Vodka for the old shaken and stirred treatment and is garnished to perfection with jalapeño-stuffed olives, baby gherkins, blue lake green beans and lemon. Pinkies up for that one.

Perhaps you’re leaning more towards a mimosa, and that’s more than OK at Hash House. They’ve got a large menu of juices to choose from, but the shining stars here are the Specialty Mimosas.

Overall, the menu takes home-cooked favorites and amplifies them to 11. Hash House is here to please with traditional dishes, but they always give you something extra, a unique twist added to every recipe. Just look at their French Toast – griddled french toast that takes a dip in banana cinnamon cream and comes with pecan maple syrup. It could’ve been simple, but that’s not the Hash House way.

The Boss Baby

BY ST EVE SCHNEIDER OPENING THIS WEEK The Boss Baby What a great idea … for a

four-second gag on 30 Rock. But instead of getting that Werewolf Bar Mitzvah feature we’ve been owed for donkey’s years, we have to settle for this story of a paranoid 7-year-old who envisions his new baby brother as a highpowered business type. The joke here seems to be that lead voice actor Alec Baldwin is doing a riff on Jack Donaghy, which is one character portrayal too late: For this thing to really capture the cultural moment, it would have to include Melissa McCarthy as the newborn’s PR agent. The plot turns on a secret battle between babies and puppies, which is just another sign DreamWorks knows what it’s doing, given how much commercial hay there is to be made of the widespread public enmity toward small, adorable dogs. Still, I’m kind of hoping The Boss Baby is a hit, because I really want to refer to its sequel as The Terrible Two. (PG) Ghost in the Shell Hope you held your fire over Iron Fist, because here comes the whitewashing controversy of our time. Not since Jonathan Pryce met Miss Saigon has there been as much deserved uproar over the casting of a white actor as an Asian character. Seriously, Scarlett Johansson as the face of the most celebrated Japanese cross-media juggernaut that isn’t Godzilla? She isn’t even a brunette!

(Most of the time!) Our pals at DreamWorks – who are really having themselves quite the week – have been hauling out everyone they can find who was involved with original manga and anime to explain why this case of occidental tourism isn’t such a terrible idea.

(This is probably a good time to remember that Dave Gibbons campaigned for the Watchmen movie.) The key defenses are, shall we say, creative ones: 1) Johansson is the original cyberpunk! (Think they have her confused with Billy Idol); 2) The character she’s playing is mostly a cyborg, so there’s really no reason she has to be Japanese (You know, just like there’s no longer any reason your next-door neighbor has to be a Muslim); and

3) Having a Caucasian performer out in front will ensure that the movie brings attention to the franchise, and thus to Japanese culture in general, that they otherwise never would have enjoyed. (Tell me about it! If not for the North American box office phenomenon that was The Great Wall, I personally would have no idea what to order at P.F. Chang’s.)

So yeah, I guess you could say I’m on the fence about it. (PG-13)

[ concert preview ] Cyrus, the child star-turned pop-rock renegade, has become a frequent musical collaborator with Coyne and the Lips, appearing on several of the group’s songs (including “We-A-Family” on Oczy Mlody), and, most notably, working with the Flaming Lips on her 2015 release, Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz.

“We’d done videos with her plastic horse. We’d done photo shoots and all that,” Coyne said of Cyrus’ backyard accoutrement. Seeing endless possibility in this yard toy, Coyne bought his own and immediately began tricking it out: “We put the big LED displays and all that stuff [on it], and it just really worked out, and we found a way to make the dollies they can push me around on and all that. And the fact that [the unicorn] is this bizarre plastic thing is even better.”

Of course, to make the visuals work, the Flaming Lips need to deliver on a musical level. And the group, which formed in 1983 in Oklahoma City, has evolved its music into a trippy, whimsical, multi-layered psychedelic pop-rock hybrid that fits the absurdist visual vibe of the stage show.

ABSOLUTE BEGINNER Electronic music innovator Hans-Joachim Roedelius has been finding the beauty in uncertainty for over four decades

OATHBREAKER AND KING WOMAN, BACKBOOTH, MARCH 19

Female-fronted Belgian headliner Oathbreaker is one of the next-level modern metal bands that exist beyond the walled ghettos of sub-genre. From the open-ended pillars of black metal and post-metal, their sound is free to follow their deep mood anywhere. With singer Caro Tanghe providing their emotional and raging humanity, they can go from a mournful siren song to a full blizzard and then settle into a highly musical odyssey all in the stretch of a single song.

Even amid all their extremity, there was considerable depth and nuance in their performance. And while their expansive scope rivals Deafheaven, Oathbreaker musters even more dynamic contrast.

Not that Oathbreaker was doing this but, really, anyone can toss together a salad.

It takes real vision to devise something that’s a true gestalt. Meet San Francisco’s King Woman, who are also on the heterodox vanguard of heavy music. They can be dissected and reduced, sure, but only so far. There’s sludge, post-metal, doom, drone and dirge in there. Instead of just coinciding, though, these elements all align and conspire into a new, synthesized whole. And now this erstwhile solo project of Kristina Esfandiari is emerging as a newly realized full band with the fresh release of their excellent debut on metal colossus Relapse Records.

That’s some buildup, huh? And it’s into that attendant anticipation that King

King Woman conjured atmosphere, heaviness and theater. With fatal lullabies looming over the crush and crash of their instruments, the music haunted as much as it rocked.

Woman made their first and only Florida appearance. Unfortunately, the debut was doomed, and not in that way. Because they and tourmates Oathbreaker played all the way up in Nashville the night before, everyone arrived late. And tragically, King Woman’s performance was abbreviated to meet the club’s curfew. But those two songs though. In that brief glimpse, they conjured atmosphere, heaviness and theater. With fatal lullabies looming over the crush and crash of their instruments, the music haunted as much as it rocked.

An entire hardcore set can be done in 10 minutes. For the King Woman experience, however, it just doesn’t do. A makeup show would be the right thing to do next time they’re touring the region.

STEVIE NICKS WITH THE PRETENDERS, AMWAY ARENA, MARCH 21

Both Stevie Nicks and Chrissie Hynde have not only laid legitimate claim to hallowed ground historically dominated by men, but they’ve done it on their own

terms. Neither can be said to be in their prime, but time isn’t the enemy to legends like these, as it is to all us mere mortals.

Of course, none of that makes them fresh, exactly. But the Pretenders are revived with last year’s album Alone, which has the golden and very contemporary fingerprints of the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach all over it. They played the hits, naturally, but they also dropped some of the new stuff, and it felt very now. Although Hynde confessed to not hitting the high notes this night, her voice showed little signs of dust or rust. Besides, in person, she’s still as fucking cool as ever.

Stevie Nicks’ show was a duly grand production. Lushly instrumented, the set was a procession of definitive pop songs.

But even though the singer came to perform, this event was equally about Stevie Nicks the figure. With ample storytelling time built in, the night was as much a personal flip through a real-life rock & roll memoir as it was a concert. No argument there. The less-talk-more-rock maxim does not apply with such storied icons. In fact, the converse can be true when you’re being regaled by firsthand tales inhabited by giants like Tom Petty and Prince, punctuated by projections of historical photos.

Whether in song or story, Stevie Nicks’ presence carried the night. BDMS rejoice! No longer satisfied with the shadowy depths of their Baldwin Park studio, Tom and Dan emerge into the light – oh, the horrible light! – this Saturday at Hard Rock Live. Fans can finally view the podcasters in their true form without all of the special effects and Hollywood glitz they typically use to camouflage their wolfish features and guttural intonations. For a pittance of $5, devotees can see with their own eyes why Tom and Dan’s physical appearance has been shrouded in mystery for so many moons. If the congregation is large enough, perhaps it will add to the improvisational powers of the podcasters and form a whirling cloud of debauchery strong enough to shatter the ancient goblin’s curse, replacing Tom and Dan’s current terrifying facades with their original fatherly suburban features and allowing them to return to their families and former lives as claims adjusters. But until the Eve of Reckoning at the Hard Rock Live, Tom and Dan remain captives in their appalling corporeal prisons, consuming dangerous amounts of White Claw seltzer simply to get through each agonizing day. Wax Idols MUSIC

The big thing to know about Orlando Shakes’ production of Antony and Cleopatra, which premieres this week, is that the Shakes snagged veteran actor Michael Dorn – best known as the Klingon Worf, son of Mogh, on one of the greatest series of all time, Star Trek: The Next Generation.

And while there are plenty of theater insiders who would say that the Shakes should focus more on casting capable local thespians in roles of such magnitude, it’s undeniable that the big name will draw plenty of extra ticket sales during the play’s run. While, yes, Dorn is an actor and not literally a Klingon Starfleet officer, comparisons between Dorn’s iconic role and this turn as Shakespeare’s love-dumbed Roman general will undoubtedly abound. (“Klingons do not pursue relationships. They conquer,” is a quote that comes to mind.) Dorn’s brother in typecasting, Jonathan Frakes (Commander William T. Riker on TNG) visits Orlando on Saturday, April 15, for a guest narration spot with Orlando Philharmonic, so hard-core Trekkers may want to look into a doublefeature weekend later this month. – Thaddeus McCollum

Hether Fortune has compressed a long musical life into a short period of time, including stints in White Lung and Hunx and His Punx, but for the last several years she has devoted herself fully (and most satisfyingly) to her solo vehicle, Wax Idols. And it is through Wax Idols that she has created her most personal and world-beating music yet – through three albums and a few singles – Fortune is reinvigorating the deathrock template for a whole new generation of fans that prefer to check out a punk show over the local goth night. Wax Idols is like the perfect hybrid of the Cure and Siouxsie and the Banshees (and yeah, we know that Robert Smith was a member of the Banshees for a minute), but filtered through Rowland S. Howard’s high noir drama and PJ Harvey power. And now you can add newly-minted label head to Fortune’s resume. After releasing material through Slumberland and Hozac, Fortune just launched the Etruscan Gold label to release her own music and be a force of “resistance and change” against the industry. We’re fucking into it. While Wax Idols’ inclusion on this bill may seem incongruous at first, Fortune has gone on the record repeatedly about her musical appreciation for Thursday, and even released 2015’s American Tragic LP through Thursday’s Geoff Rickly’s Connect imprint. But let’s be honest, amongst this Sunday’s more rockist lineup, Wax Idols will shimmer like a brilliant (but very, VERY cursed) jewel. – Matthew Moyer

Thankfully, the Orlando stop for this experimental hip-hop group got upgraded from an originally scheduled opening spot for the Flaming Lips (with whom they’re touring and who will be playing that same night at House of Blues) to a full headlining show of their own downtown. It’s a good thing because this hot-buzzing, Sub Pop-signed L.A. crew is a whole lot to unpack. But what else would you expect from the union of a Ph.D. in Theater and Performance Studies, a film-score composer and an original cast member of Hamilton? Cerebral and challenging, these avant-garde astronauts are one of the furthest reaching hip-hop acts in the game. In both lyric and sound, they’re dizzyingly conceptual. Sonically, they take electronic, rap, noise and industrial and push it all into the great wild beyond. Their explorations are pregnant with thesis and their verses crammed with subtext and very well-read references. Taken all together, it’s a wormhole that’s hyper-literate and fiercely futuristic. Presented as a tribute to recently departed actor John Hurt (Alien, V for Vendetta, Hellboy), this screening of the 1984 adaptation of George Orwell’s seminal foray into science fiction has absolutely nothing to do with the nationwide protest of President Trump’s administration. That protest, specifically targeting Trump’s plan to cut the National Endowment for the Arts from the 2018 budget, as well as his administration’s Orwellian disregard for objective truth, also takes place at theaters across the country on Tuesday, April 4, but this screening at the Enzian is in honor of the acclaimed actor’s work – like the time he hooked Harry Potter up with a wand in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Gabrielle Giffords & Mark Kelly EVENTS

Six years after being shot in the head during an assassination attempt, former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords doesn’t need to use a lot of words to inspire a crowd. Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, have taken their pain and turned it into a strong force for advocacy against gun violence and promoting reform laws. Last year, the couple visited victims’ families and survivors of the Pulse massacre to let them know they weren’t alone in the fight. “Stopping gun violence takes courage,” Giffords said in a short speech in Orlando. “We must never stop fighting.” It’s not clear whether Giffords and Kelly will discuss the impacts guns are having on American lives at Rollins College, but they do plan to talk about how to find hope in each other when the world offers little. – Monivette Cordeiro Wax Idols

Dinosaur Jr. MUSIC

Dinosaur Jr. formed in 1984 after J. Mascis and Lou Barlow’s hardcore band, Deep Wound, called it quits. While Dinosaur Jr., for the most part, deviates from their blisteringly fast predecessor, they aren’t an ordinary indie band. Instead, they’re a trio that has thoughtfully utilized their experiences with music of all kinds to write genre-bending records spanning the course of decades. Taking influences from Neil Young, the Replacements, and even the Birthday Party, Dinosaur Jr. effortlessly unites bandleader Mascis’s heavily distorted, but bright and bittersweet, style of guitar playing with Barlow’s driving, thumping Ramones-esque bass lines to create a captivating, yet intentionally imperfect sound. The stellar dynamic between Mascis and Barlow, who spent nearly 16 years away from Dinosaur Jr. to front Sebadoh, is the subtle secret ingredient the band has used to create what Mascis once eloquently coined “ear-bleeding country.” Not only that, but the perpetually hair-in-face Mascis has never been one to bask in critical or audience praise, admitting in 2005 that, for awhile, “most people thought we sucked.” In 2017, Dinosaur Jr. continues to accidentally and shambolically prove those people wrong. – Jesse Feinman with Easy Action | 7 p.m. | The Beacham, 46 N. Gay guy here. Met a guy online. He came over. We had incredible sex and then a great conversation lasting several hours.

But – and you knew there was one coming – he told me that he lied about his HIV status. (I asked him before meeting him, like I do with anyone.) He is undetectable, but he told me initially he was “HIV/STD negative.” I got very upset – more from the lie than his status. (I know that undetectable is practically the same as negative.) I really like him, but that was a big lie. He told me all about his life and any other secrets after that. Should I swear off him for lying about such a big topic? Or is the fact he did tell me and our connection enough to give him a second chance? I had not been that happy up till the reveal in, well, maybe ever. But I want to be wise.

Sometimes positive guys get sick of being punished for being honest, and so they lie – and it’s particularly tempting to lie to someone you don’t expect to see again, i.e., a quick hookup. HIV-positive people shouldn’t lie to their sex partners. Obviously. People should be honest, informed consent is consent, and lying about your HIV status can be risky for people with HIV. Thanks to stupid laws passed by ill-informed idiots, failing to inform a sex partner you’re HIV-positive is a crime in many areas. There are people in prison today – mostly men, mostly black – for failing to disclose. These disclosure laws incentivize not knowing your status – you can’t be punished for not disclosing what you don’t know – putting everyone at higher risk.

Why would he tell the truth? It’s possible he lied to you about his status – a lie he regarded as harmless thanks to his undetectable viral load – because he assumed this would be a hookup and nothing more.

He wasn’t going to infect you and he wasn’t going to see you again. But after you two hit it off, DADT, he decided to tell you the truth right away instead of waiting weeks or months.
