or the past year, the only thing voters in Florida’s 9th Congressional District have known about Dena Minning is, well, pretty much nothing.

While she’s an accomplished doctor and medical researcher, Minning’s run for Congress has been relatively obscure and dominated by her relationship status with U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, the incumbent currently in the seat. That only increased last week after the two got hitched on a Melbourne Beach and “Dr. Dena Minning” changed to “Dr. Dena Grayson” on the candidate’s social media accounts. ast week Florida’s Planned Parenthood affiliates filed a federal lawsuit against the state challenging a new abortion law that, among other things, stops abortion providers from receiving Medicaid funds for separate services, such as cancer screenings, STD testing and contraception. The suit was filed against the heads of the Florida Department of Health and the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration in the U.S. District Court in Tallahassee.

“We have a message for politicians in Florida, and across the country,” says Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, in a statement. “You cannot strip health care from thousands of people and expect to get away with it.

Although litigation alone will not stop the unprecedented surge of attacks on reproductive health care, we will do whatever it takes to protect the health and safety of our patients.” orlandoweekly.com

summer. On Dena Grayson’s Facebook page, she posted a picture of herself and her new husband, saying, “My handsome, brilliant, and amazing husband, Alan Grayson!!”

Wedding details aside, what’s really interesting about this union is if and how this name change affects the already contentious dynamics of the Democratic race for the Aug. 30 primary for this district. Dena Grayson has raised money but done relatively little campaigning, while front-runners Susannah Randolph and state Sen. Darren Soto have been hitting the local pavement hard.

We’ll have to wait until the end of the summer to really know, but for now the couple is spending their honeymoon making the press rounds. Dena Grayson told us in an interview that getting married to Alan Grayson was one of the best things that has happened to her, and that they tried to keep their wedding private. Citing the Zika crisis in Puerto Rico and Florida, Grayson says as a medical researcher who’s worked with the virus, she’d be the best person in Congress to help educate others on it and fight on other health-related issues.

House Bill 1411, which is supposed to go into effect July 1, blocks Planned Parenthood from receiving Medicaid reimbursement for preventative services; under the federal Hyde Amendment, using Medicaid funds for abortion is already banned. The lawsuit says HB 1411 is the Republican-led Florida Legislature’s attempt to “punish, harass and stigmatize the state’s abortion providers for their and their patients’ exercise of constitutional rights,” adding that the law would “reduce access to basic reproductive health care for thousands of Florida residents.”

“We are in court because everyone deserves access to quality, affordable, compassionate care, no matter who you are,” says Barbara Zdravecky, president of Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida. “Let’s call this what it is: an attack on people who already have the least access to care, all in the name of politics. Lawmakers have gone so far as to claim that women can go to dentists for health care. This goes to show why Florida politicians have no business writing laws about women’s health. We will do everything in our power to protect access to care for the Floridians who rely on us.”

Gov. Rick Scott’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Florida DOH spokesperson Mara Gambineri says the department is currently reviewing the lawsuit. AHCA spokesperson Mallory McManus says the agency has not been served with the lawsuit yet. ●

East Orange County residents protest two housing developments near the region’s traditional urban-rural border, the Econlockhatchee River

self-described “Florida cracker,” Jay Zembower remembers a time when he and his friends could ride their horses from Seminole County down the Econlockhatchee River and through the wilderness to Deseret Ranches. White-tailed deer, alligators, wild turkeys, gopher tortoises, sandhill cranes and black bears roamed through areas of pine flatlands, oak hammocks and lush foliage. For fun, the rural community held cattle drives with covered wagons, camping on the trail alongside the mosquitos.

“You can’t do that now,” Zembower, of Chuluota, says. “That old Florida is evaporating quickly.”

And as those pockets of wild green diminish, so do once-respected boundaries between the new Florida and the one that was. Next week, the Orange County Board of Commissioners will make decisions on future land use and zoning regulations for two developments – “The Grow” (Lake Pickett South) and “Sustany” (Lake Pickett North) – that will influence the character of the region east of the Econ River for the next generation.

Just off Colonial Road, the Grow is a 1,418-acre property where developer Dwight Saathoff plans to build 2,078 residential units on about 835 acres. The plan includes a farm, community gardens, trails, a community park and 292 acres of open space. The Sustany parcel, which stands at 1,418 acres, is above the Grow and closer to the Econ, and developer

The plans for Sustany also include a potential bridge that will cross the river, which is a sensitive environmental area. Currently, the county’s rules covering that land limit development to one home for every 10 acres, which would mean less than 280 houses in that acreage. Developers have proposed rewriting those rules.

The projects have drawn fierce opposition from some of east Orange County’s rural residents, who see their way of life under attack.

Emily Bonilla, founder of the group East of the Econ, lives nearby on a six-acre plot with a small farm. She moved here with her husband to raise their two sons among the goats and the chickens, away from the high-rises of the city. Now, she’s fighting against developments she says will add urban sprawl and traffic to the already congested roads. The fight partly inspired Bonilla to run against Orange County Commissioner Ted Edwards for his District 5 seat. Edwards has said in the past that Orange County is an “urban county.”

“Should we do what Seminole County did and just kind of lop off part of the county?” he said to the Orlando Sentinel last year. “I don’t want to artificially say we’re going to cut the line at the Econ; to me that doesn’t make good land-use practice.”

the watershed and affect the animals in the wildlife corridor along the river, including black bears.

“My sons ask me, ‘Mom, where are the animals going to live?’” she says. “At their age, they have enough common sense to talk about this issue that hasn’t been addressed by the county.”

Bonilla and her neighbors have also been joined in their opposition by Seminole County commissioners, Oviedo City Council members, the League of Women Voters of Orange County and the Sierra Club of Central Florida. Marty Sullivan of the League of Women Voters says as a fifth-generation Floridian, he doesn’t think Sustany or the Grow are what we should do with our natural lands.

“The biggest threat to our bears, our panthers, our eagles, our skinks, our ibises is loss of habitat,” he says. “We don’t want to give that up, I believe, and further endanger our natural lands by turning it into another suburb.”

But not every resident is completely opposed to the developments. Zembower,

representing the Lake Pickett Woods Homeowners Association and three other representatives for community associations near Lake Pickett, came out in favor of the Grow – and against Sustany – earlier this month in a Sentinel op-ed.

Zembower says he’s been fighting to keep the area rural for about 25 years and realized that whether he was on board or not, the area would be developed. He and a group of neighbors talked with Saathoff, the developer for the Grow. Saathoff was willing to discuss keeping the area rural, increasing buffers and reducing the density. Zembower says Saathoff agreed to a rare covenant and deed restriction on the project that goes with the land. Sustany declined to negotiate a similar agreement, he says.

“There’s some people who don’t want any development at all, which we respect, and I think we’d all love to see it stay how it’s been,” he says. “The problem is we’ve been doing this for a long time, and the appetite for development is as ripe as it’s ever been in that corridor. We thought, if we don’t sit down with these developers in good faith, we’re going to end up with different house designs with a total disregard to any transitioning or rural flavor.”

Still, Bonilla and other residents aren’t going down without a fight. East of the Econ is protesting the projects at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, in front of the Orange County administration building on Rosalind Avenue.

“We work hard and we choose to live out here,” she says. “I feel like it’s being taken away beyond our control, and we didn’t do anything wrong to deserve this.” mcordeiro@orlandoweekly.com

Pop Art Prints packs a serious punch

aybe because the iconic images of the movement are so bright and shiny, sometimes even goofy, Pop Art can seem empty-headed. But the sharply selected group of works in Pop Art Prints, a traveling exhibition curated by the Smithsonian American Art Museum opening at the Mennello on Friday, shows how those poppy images really documented the bursting bubble of America’s blind faith in its institutions.

Mennello Museum director Shannon Fitzgerald says, “In the ’50s and the ’60s, these artists turned the art world upside down. [This work] is funny, silly, but so openly critical of what was going on in the world.

“And they committed this faux pas,” she continues, “they went mechanical, and used all this technology [like Xerox]. It might seem old-fashioned in the context of how quickly youth now can transmit and reproduce and distribute their work,” but Fitzgerald sees it as the speedy forerunner of today’s digital art.

Roy Lichtenstein’s daffy dots and speecah balloons and Andy Warhol’s soup cans and Marilyns are probably the most iconic imagery of Pop Art. Some of that Lichtenstein comic-book art is here, but so too are his “Moonscape” and “Haystacks No. 3,” both highly mediated representations of the natural world. “Moonscape” is printed on Rowlux, an almost holographic plastic that’s as far from a “natural” mate-

Fitzgerald acknowledges. “There are no women in this show.” No women artists, but plenty of women portrayed by male artists. Pop Art Prints collects Lichtenstein, Warhol, Wesselmann, Jim Dine, Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Claes Oldenburg, Mel Ramos, Robert Rauschenberg and James Rosenquist.

“There were absolutely women involved in the Pop Art movement,” Fitzgerald says, lamenting the lack of, for instance, a piece or two by Martha Rosler. (Indeed, this reporter had hoped for a Marisol.) But the show was curated by the Smithsonian Institution, and so the Mennello plans associated programming to address and dialogue with the works on the walls.

“We are going to have a video interviewing 12 artists who participated in a revisionist history show at the Brooklyn Museum with the Pop Art women,” Fitzgerald says.

There will also be the Family Days the Mennello is known for, with kids’ activities involving Lichtenstein’s dots and a “Make Your Own Warhol” event.

But, Fitzgerald says, “I want more things for adults to do. We need to connect what’s going on in here with the outside world.” Pop Art Prints seems like the ideal show for the Mennello to bridge the gap between kids and adults, between folk and fine art.

And Marilyn is here, yes, but the other Warhols in Pop Art Prints are from his “Death and Disaster” series. For Warhol, usually so carefully bland, these are coruscating indictments of American culture – Jackie Kennedy in her naked pain at JFK’s funeral; police dogs snapping at protesters in Birmingham, Alabama. “That was a devastating moment,” Fitzgerald says. “We can draw a line and connect that to Ferguson … how many years later are we still having this conversation?”

Politics aside, another touchstone belief Pop Art demolished was the concept of fine art as precious single snowflake. All of these prints were made as multiples, the idea being to blanket the world with the work: “Warhol wanted more people to be able to buy his work and live with it,” says Fitzgerald.

The use of advertising tropes and forms, so commonplace now, would also have been shocking then – yet another subversion of the line between fine and commercial. Tom Wesselmann’s “Cutout Nude” is a descendant of odalisques throughout art history, yet her takin’-iteasy grin and plasticky sheen feels straight out of a Newport ad.

“Tommy created worlds.” Many true and tearful things were said when the members of Orlando’s theater community gathered at the Orlando Repertory Theatre last Saturday night to say farewell to Tom Mangieri, the beloved stage designer who passed away on May 15 after a shockingly brief battle with brain cancer. But none better summed up the effect Mangieri had on Orlando’s arts family than that simple phrase from actor Rus Blackwell’s opening remarks. In his 25 years in Central Florida’s theaters, Mangieri did much more than make some of the most imaginative, meticulously detailed playgrounds that area actors and directors have had the privilege to ply their craft on; he also fostered networks of friendship across our often fractious arts community, uniting everyone in their love and admiration for his flawless artistic eye, florid sense of humor and eternally open heart.

Like so many others, I first met Mangieri around 2000 at Theatre Downtown’s old venue on the corner of Orange Avenue and Princeton Street. Over the early years of the decade, we collaborated on a series of shows, first as volunteers for Theatre Downtown, and later as members of SoulFire with John DiDonna and Rus Blackwell. As stage manager and assistant director on shows like Killer Joe and Lonesome West, I watched in awe as Mangieri transformed a drab office space into a disgustingly authentic whitetrash trailer (complete with chicken-wire fence to protect the audience from the actors) or a rustic Irish cottage built using real rubble, because Tommy thought the styrofoam stones he carved were insufficiently realistic. A decade and a half later, those shows remain among the high points of my career, thanks in large measure to the

This year’s theme is “Play,” and selected local artists can receive up to a $500 stipend ($1,000 for out-of-state participants). Mangieri was best known as a prolific set designer and scenic painter, whose perpetually packed schedule kept him bouncing between the Dr. Phillips Center, the Lowndes Shakespeare Center, Lake Highland Preparatory School, the State Theatre in Eustis, the Garden Theatre in Winter Garden and countless other venues. Despite being eternally in demand, Mangieri worked for insanely low fees in order to help companies he cared about execute their visions on stage, often working miracles on minuscule budgets (like the multi-story barrio he designed for GOAT’s In the Heights). Nearly every producer in town can tell a tale about a time Tommy saved their tail by painting a set at 4 a.m.

While his reluctance to ever say “no” inevitably created conflicting commitments that drove technical directors insane, he never let a show down, even continuing designs for Beth Marshall’s The Whale after becoming ill.

But I also knew Mangieri (who originally performed under the stage name Tommy Girard) as a sensitive actor. When Empty Spaces Theatre produced Martin Sherman’s Bent in 2007, we cast him alongside David Lee and Daniel Cooksley as Rudy, a pacifist plant-lover who is brutally murdered by Nazis. Mangieri approached the short but crucial role with unguarded honesty, allowing himself to plumb depths of agony far more experienced actors struggle to access.

At the time Orlando Sentinel critic Elizabeth Maupin recognized Mangieri’s performance, saying his character “matched” Cooksley’s and Lee’s and lauding his “fretful, careworn” portrayal.

Of course, the most important character Tommy Mangieri played was himself – loyal friend, devoted son, loving soul – which he always embodied with his unique aesthetic

style, sans artifice or pretense. I’ll never forget Tommy, spattered head to toe in paint (“like a living, breathing Pollock painting,” as Paul Castaneda put it) and sometimes nothing else, spinning unprintably salty stories while his paintbrush magically transformed plain plywood into brick and marble. The artistic void Mangieri leaves will eventually be filled (at least in part) by the many students he selflessly mentored, but his legacy of kindness and caring is up to all of us who knew him to uphold in our everyday lives.

After the memorial service, I skipped the potluck reception and sprinted across Loch Haven’s lawn to the Shakes for We Don’t Play Fight, a one-night-only production from Conquest Pro Wrestling. Written by wrestler Jason “Static” Calabrese and directed by fight choreographer Jason Skinner (creator of the 2016 Fringe dance/ combat show Shatter), the show fused 30 minutes of expository dramatics with five WWE-esque matches inside a full-sized ring, including an all-female fight and an impressively athletic tag-team bout featuring a Sid Haig-style clown and a flamboyant Haitian fighter.

While an honest exposé about the pain pro wrestlers endure in and out of the ring (à la Mickey Rourke’s The Wrestler) would make a ripe subject for the stage, this play’s dialogue was constructed entirely of hackneyed sports clichés. And though Joey Mayberry and Gary Bell injected some welcome humor, the slender, sluggishly paced plot had little impact on the actual matches, causing me to lose interest long before the main event. But none of that really matters, because the show featured multiple wellmuscled boys getting sweaty in tight, shiny shorts … and that’s exactly the way Tommy would have wanted it. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

The long-promised 1,700-seat Steinmetz acoustic hall at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts is inching closer to reality, as the Center announced last month the receipt of $5.75 million in donations (from Judson and Joyce Green, Jonathan and Krista Ledden, and Linda Downs and Angela Majors) toward the Phase 2 capital campaign. No groundbreaking date has been announced for the addition, originally intended to accommodate the Orlando Philharmonic (which has recently renovated the Plaza Live as its new home) and Orlando Ballet.

Bittersweet symphony Celebrate Negroni Week at 25 local bars

I

t’s the most … wonderful … time … of the year! No, not Christmastime. Negroni Week, June 6-12, is in full swing, and for ambitious bartenders and smart drinkers, it’s an annual chance to shine. The event, co-sponsored by Campari and Imbibe magazine, was launched in 2013 as a way to raise funds for various charities while raising awareness of one of the best cocktails known to humanity. Last year, more than 3,500 establishments all over the world stirred up over $320,000 for charitable causes, and this year, more than 6,000 venues have already signed on.

The Negroni has been around since the beginning of the 20th century, but its popularity has exploded in the past few years. Bartenders love it because of its simplicity – combining equal parts of three ingredients (Campari, gin, sweet vermouth), it’s so easy anyone can make it – and the myriad elegant variations to be spun from that simplicity. Some are so long-established as to be classics in their own right now, like the Boulevardier (Campari, sweet vermouth, bourbon), the Old Pal (Campari, dry vermouth, rye), the Americano (Campari, sweet vermouth, club soda) and the Negroni Sbagliato (Campari, sweet vermouth, sparkling wine). “Negroni Week is great,” says Jennifer Harton of Lil Indies.

“Introducing people to a classic, getting to switch it up a little and get creative, plus donating to charity at the same time.”

For some bars, it’s a chance to create strange and fantastical drinks or even foods inspired by the Negroni. Along with the actual cocktail, Kiwi’s Pub in Altamonte Springs is selling Negroni cupcakes: chocolate cake with sweet vermouth and gin in the cake mix, iced with

Campari buttercream icing and sprinkled with orange zest. The Guesthouse is serving Negroni paletas, ice pops made with Campari, St. Augustine gin, Cocchi Torino, rhubarb, peach, cucumber, lemon and Red Zinger tea. And Vespr is splashing out a Negroni that’ll get you wired: their Café Negroni incorporates coldbrew concentrate rather than gin.

Other creative Negronis filling glasses this week: Citrus Restaurant’s aged Negroni (Bombay gin, Lillet, Campari, house-made grapefruit bitters and sea salt aged 34 days in an oak barrel) and the Ravenous Pig’s carbonated Negroni Sbagliato with Campari, Contratto red vermouth and orange roussone on tap.

Some bars plan a different Negroni every night. The Matador promises to pull out the blender one night (no better summer drink than a Negroni slushie!), and Lil Indies has posted a whole Negroni menu.

“The Negroni Week menu (like all of our menus, other than classics) is a team effort. … We talk about ideas together, and help each other fine-tune drinks,” Harton says. One that’s caught our eye in particular is Maybe Things Will Be Better in Chicago: barrel-aged Damrak Gin, plum and fennel Campari, and Alvear amontillado sherry. Harton named it for friends who are moving to Chicago next month: former Orlando Weekly music editor Ashley Belanger and comedian Larry Fulford. “Two people this town will miss greatly,” Harton says. “The actual drink concept came from a beer I had at Ten10’s Tweak’d Fest, a plum/fennel saison. Larry and Ashley both like Tom Waits, and being that it’s a very bittersweet cocktail, I just thought it would be fitting.”

Zora Grille Kebabs done in the Persian style are the real draw to this Iranian eatery. While spices and seasonings need tinkering, the meats, be they ground lamb, ribeye or chicken thigh, are splendidly succulent. A well-laid Plan Maggie’s Plan may be the film to finally bring writer-director Rebecca Miller and actor Greta Gerwig into the spotlight

I

n Maggie’s Plan, writer-director Rebecca Miller has shown a remarkable resemblance in both tone and subject to Woody Allen. But perhaps it’s not that surprising, considering she comes from writing stock even more regal than Allen: her dad, Arthur Miller.

But to praise the 53-year-old filmmaker just for her familial ties is insulting, as she’s led a more multi-faceted career than even her father. A fierce advocate for female filmmakers, Miller has embraced writing (both novels and screenplays), directing, producing and even acting, having worked with Alan Pakula and Mike Nichols.

Despite that impressive résumé, she’s not a household name. Her directorial debut, Angela, in 1995, was well-received

at Sundance, but she’s made just four films since. The Private Lives of Pippa Lee was a mild success in 2009, but her latest offering might finally be the one to grab the attention of mainstream audiences. Though it, too, feels small compared to what Miller might be capable of, it strikes a nice comedic tone and, in doing so, may be the vehicle to finally drag Greta Gerwig from quirky-yetunderwhelming independent-film darling to legitimate comedic actress.

Gerwig plays the titular Maggie, whose plan (at least in the first third of the film) is to have a baby by artificial insemination.

She picks Guy (Travis Fimmel), a “pickle entrepreneur,” as the donor, and comedy ensues. But after promising to be “back in a jiff with the jizz,” Guy turns out not to be the right guy.

Enter Ethan Hawke as John, stuck in a dismal marriage to a woman (Julianne Moore) described as a glacial, terrifying narcissist. He falls immediately for the younger Maggie while we fall for them both, as Hawke’s acting chops prove a per-

fect balance for Gerwig’s looser but no less lovable charm. But even Moore (with an odd but engaging German accent) garners our sympathy, especially toward the end, when character motivations are turned on their heads. Throw in Bill Hader and Maya Rudolph as friends of Maggie and even Wallace Shawn in a cameo, and you have an ensemble reminiscent of some of the more charming 1990s comedies, with a pleasing, unobtrusive score by Michael Rohatyn to boot.

“There’s no plan, is there?” John’s daughter asks Maggie. Well, maybe Maggie doesn’t have a clear plan for her own narrative, but Miller does. Revealing more plot, though, would ruin the surprises of the clever, though slight, three-act script that Miller has concocted (based on a story by Karen Rinaldi). But if you’re that reader who demands details, simply think again of Allen: New York academics engaging in spirited, intellectual and often hilarious conversations about love and life.

“Love is messy,” Hader’s character tells Maggie. “It’s illogical, [and] it’s wasteful.”

Those aren’t exactly profound observations, but Maggie’s Plan does a competent job of depicting a world in which those ideas are both painfully and comedically true. And though the film feels a bit like a stepping stone to something greater for Miller, the stone is surprisingly polished.

Now You See Me 2 The success of 2013’s prestidigitation-themed thriller Now You See Me came as something of a surprise – which makes sense, since that’s kind of the whole point of a magic trick anyway. So the movie’s quartet of master illusionists are back for another caper, this time at the behest of an evil tech tycoon they’d rather take down than serve. As for topbilled star Jesse Eisenberg … well, let’s just say this isn’t the movie we wanted to see him disappear from. (PG-13) Warcraft Multiplayer, meet multiplex. The gaming world yields a narrative feature directed and co-written by Duncan Jones, helmer of 2009’s acclaimed Moon (and now the only Bowie that matters). Jones’ involvement with gaming actually goes all the way back to 2003, when he was one of the creators of the politically themed Republic: the Revolution. Now if only we could do 22

ALSO PLAYING Approaching the Unknown A sci-fi flick about an astronaut who gets in trouble on the first-ever solo flight to Mars – that sure sounds like prime summer fare. So why did Approaching the Unknown get dumped in a very limited release, with almost no promotional fanfare?

Maybe because the Village Voice pronounced it the most melancholy space opera since the original Solaris. And maybe because star Mark Strong’s last two forays into the genre were as supporting characters in John Carter and Green Lantern. Playing while you can catch it at Disney Springs – as always, your home for melancholia.

hrice have never been the band you thought they were. Buried beneath a heavy blanket of post-hardcore aggression, they dropped progressive time signatures and unconventional melodies into the mix, painting them as a band not quite comfortable with existing merely as fodder for the scream faction. Even when swept up in the wave of success that celebrated the side of their sound that scuffed up the floors of respectable concert halls with the blunt force of falling bodies, Thrice began a metamorphosis. It was a transformation that has turned them into something far greater than just another band to rattle your brain. Electronic elements, string instruments and poetic concept albums began to emerge in their catalog. And suddenly Thrice had more in common with artists like Tool than with the kinds of bands they were touring with.

Thrice started writing ethereal instrumentals, folk songs and sonnets in iambic pentameter set to music. And yet, impossibly, those new experiments in the studio didn’t feel like a band having an identity crisis. (Pun intended – Identity Crisis was the name of their debut album.) It felt instead like a natural progression; it felt like Thrice 2.0. Fortunately for the fans, the music lost none of its sense of urgency, and, fortunately for the band, their fanbase evolved with them.

In 2012, at the height of their popularity, Thrice announced that they would be taking an indefinite hiatus. The band members (Dustin Kensrue, Teppei Teranishi, Eddie Breckenridge and Riley Breckenridge) set out on different paths – some pursued other musical projects, some concentrated on family – only to discover that those paths led right back to each other. “It was natural for us to continue creating during the hiatus,” drummer Riley Breckenridge explains.

“As a result, we all had a decent stockpile of ideas that felt like they’d make sense for the next Thrice record, and we were able to pick and choose from that group of ideas,

as well as write with a bit more intent once we’d decided we were going to bring the band back.”

It’s been four years since their “Farewell” tour, and five since their last album – that’s a lot of time to scribble down lyrics and toy around with ideas. The post-hiatus release, To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere, begins a new chapter in the cathartic journey of Thrice, one that seeks to find the calm eye in the center of a hurricane. “We’re trying to make band life a bit more manageable,” Breckenridge concurs. “Three of us are fathers, so being on the road for 10 months out of the year and grinding on the road, and grinding out the writerecord-tour-tour-tour cycle to infinity is not really sustainable. We’re spacing our tours out a bit more … and just trying to keep things really balanced. I think it’s a healthy approach, and our spirits are as high as they’ve ever been, so I think we’re on the right track.”

Orlando made the cut for their tour itinerary, with a date at House of Blues that has already sold out. Those who missed out on tickets, or fans who just can’t get enough, can also try to catch the band’s acoustic in-store performance at Park Ave CDs before the night’s main event. Breckenridge stresses that the love is mutual: “We’ve always felt very welcome in Orlando, and have had a ton of memorable shows there. … We really appreciate the support.”

of-a-kind cultural jewel that is the Timucua White House is back in beautiful business! After the city permitting red-tape scare in April that threatened to put the kibosh on its operation, the White House has officially resumed doing what it does like literally no other: giving Orlando artistic terroir. And I can’t imagine a more emphatic riposte and statement of the place’s civic worth than a show of deep fine-arts caliber, credentials and connection as the recent one featuring accomplished pianist Myra Melford (May 30).

The event was an outreach concert by the pacesetting Atlantic Center for the Arts, where Melford is currently a master artist doing a May residency. And according to Civic Minded 5 host Matt Gorney, it was her first Orlando show in nearly 30 years.

Of the two parts of Melford’s performance, her unaccompanied segment was the most contained, complete and stunning. Performing mostly pieces inspired directly by the paintings of artist and friend Don Reich, Melford stretched the bounds of jazz and contemporary classical. Her experimentation, though, isn’t the kind that confronts with heavy-handed and purely conceptual atonality or other jarringly non-musical tactics. She defies conventionalism as much as any self-respecting avant-gardist, but her language has clear virtuosity with impressive structure and remarkable intelligibility. In other words, you don’t need to be a hard-core free-jazz freak to get down with what she’s doing.

Melford weaves together familiar drifts of classic jazz with truly arty adventure

Lydia Lunch Retrovirus is OG stuff. This is art as primal instinct. And unlike what their name suggests, their music is far more timeless than retro. in ways that feel more organic than hybrid.

Her music’s spirit flits with improvisational heart from nervy to whimsical, challenging to playful. Her brilliant technical agnosticism goes anywhere from fleet-fingered scholarship to surprisingly wild artistry, featuring full-hand and -arm playing that included knuckle rolls, palm strokes, hand chops, fist mashes and elbow leans.

But even with all those feral flourishes, and even in climaxes of mania, discipline always defines Melford’s execution. And that discipline commanded standing ovations.

THE BEAT

For anyone who cut their teeth in the Orlando alternative underground like me, the Genitorturers always stood as an extreme cult legend, one of those bands whose shocking early shows we always heard tales about from older, cooler friends.

Well, they just hit their 30th anniversary. To celebrate, they returned to the city that birthed them and held a bash that was probably one of the biggest and certainly the most sex-drenched shows that local promoter Modern Music Movement has put on (June 2, the Abbey).

The Genitorturers are an industrial metal band but music is just one aspect of what they do, an arguably secondary one at

that. Really, they’re much more of a freakshow performance group. Shock is an ever-moving threshold, and norms have changed exponentially since they first sparked outrage. But even now, they still do a respectable job of delivering grand sleaze with old-school subterranean showmanship. Unlike the basic Halloween fashion show that their younger, paler shadows put on, the Genitorturers’ BDSM carnival still goes big and far with nudity, stilt-walkers, sword-swallowing and lots and lots of dildos. It’s a machine of spectacle that’s like GWAR imagined by a woman. Almost no one does it like this any more. What’s more, it’s pretty original and certifiably homegrown.

Just as historic, however, was the appearance by NYC underground icon Lydia Lunch, who came this time with Retrovirus, a full-band iteration spanning Lunch’s many musical groups. And it was a big enough occasion to pull a visibly discrete crowd all its own.

Between the Genitorturers’ elaborate fetish orgy and the scene-goth fluff of opening duo Abbey Death, there was a particular frequency to the night’s proceedings. But Lunch and her band weren’t on it. Practically radioactive with No Wave creed and cred, they threw off pure punker-than-punk heat. They sounded good. They sounded real. They sounded essential. Their performance and presence were so vital that there was, in that moment, little indicator of the age of the band members or the material. This is the OG stuff. This is art as primal instinct.

Ponce De Leon first explored our lovely state in 1513, looking for rejuvenation and the secrets of eternal youth. Keep the dream alive at the Tacky Tourist Party, which promises to be a celebration of the Sunshine State’s silliest visitors. Come decked out in your most absurd tourist gear and learn about Ponce’s journey in the Finding the Fountain of Youth exhibit. The evening brings entertainment from guitarist Jeff Scott, scavenger hunts, shuffleboard games and, of course, a costume contest. Loyal NPR listeners know Diane Rehm as the shaky-voiced weekday morning host who posits insightful questions to politicians and other newsmakers. But that characteristic quake isn’t a result of Rehm’s age, but rather a symptom of her battle with spasmodic dysphonia, a voice disorder cased by involuntary muscular spasms in the larynx. While many radio hosts might have thrown in the towel after developing the condition, Rehm hasn’t let the condition take away her focus on powerful journalism, resulting in a prestigious Peabody award in 2009. Our local NPR affiliate, WMFE, hosts Rehm this week for a discussion about her career – as well as her analysis of the current presidential race – along with a Q&A session. WMFE has stepped up their live game in recent years, with Orlando appearances from Ira Glass, “Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me” and “Ask Me Another.” Maybe soon we’ll get a live taping of “Echoes” with John Diliberto. To kick off a new, intimate series of shows in their Lennon Room, Hard Rock Live has tapped indie troubadour Freedy Johnston to headline the first of these “Living Room” shows. They chose wisely. Johnston’s music and songwriting style – simple, direct, all minor-keyed and peopled with a collection of the damned and the even more damned – is full of a million tiny heartbreaks unfolding right in front of you, details that might otherwise be missed in a crowded bar or impersonal auditorium. Johnston had a taste of the big time during the alt-rock explosion with his song “Bad Reputation” in 1994, but has since shunned the mainstream, preferring a more personal path to expression.

The worst part about the Orlando Science Center is that they allow children inside.

Thankfully, this night they aren’t. Science Night Live is reserved for science-loving grown-ups who want to observe and mingle among other nerds. This event, combining the social and the science, gives geeks a chance to try a variation of hands-on experiments and challenges in multiple exhibits, like the “mindbender mansion” and “kinetic zone”; compete in science trivia; view out of this world sights through a giant telescope in the observatory; and take in PechaKucha presentations where speakers keep things concise: just 20 slides and just 20 seconds per slide. The Dr. Phillips CineDome will even be playing two films. Ain’t nothing like a good two-piece rock band. But in recent years, the local crop has gotten lean, as evidenced by the waning of the once-regular Two Piece Mini Fest.

However, some fresh, relatively undiscovered blood like Howling Midnight has been surfacing and showing real promise. Certainly one of the most noteworthy is Copper Bones, who aren’t actually new. The band has been around for years and its ranks pack deep scene cred from Orlando music canon acts like My Hotel Year, Peterbuilt and the Attack. But they weren’t always a duo. Now they are, with a total embrace of the concept as a heavy riff-rock band that’s burly, boss and much-needed around here. And their brand-new album, Exhibit A, lays the beef on thick. Displacement Gallery Talk ART

Displacement: Symbols and Journeys, another bravura show curated by Amy Galpin, opened at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum May 21. The show explores borders and boundaries, but before you assume it’s a heady conceptual brew of liminality and intersectional politics, pull up: This is a straightforward examination of the physical barrier between the United States and Mexico. Certainly there are looks at cultural appropriation, alienation and hybrid states of being, but mostly it’s focused on U.S.Mexico immigration. “I wanted to create a show for our community that melds my interest in artistic movement across the Mexico and United States border, but that also provides a space to think about immigration and the power of cultural symbols to usurp political boundaries,” says Galpin, who points out that the 2016 presidential race has made the struggles of refugees starkly apparent. Plague Vendor MUSIC

Between their 2012 reunion and the release of their first album in 17 years (Freedom) last summer, there are a whole lot of people cranked to see Swedish punk legends Refused. And the righteous garage-punk of Atlanta’s the Coathangers is always worth it. But the hot new blood of Plague Vendor is what makes this bill extra virile. The young California band has been kicking up lots of street heat with the raw power of both their music and their physical live performances. Their latest album, Bloodsweat, is unequivocally one of the most ball-grabbing records to drop this year, boiling over with a dark, swashbuckling sound that dangles on the high wire between post-punk blackness, fevered punk danger and greasy rock swagger.
