Media organizations sue city of Orlando over Pulse 911 calls

A

coalition of media organizations, including the Orlando Sentinel and the Associated Press, has filed a lawsuit against the city of Orlando for its refusal to release the 911 calls and other emergency communication during the morning of the mass shooting that killed 49 at the gay nightclub Pulse.

The city says those files are exempt from Florida’s broad public records law under two instances: They contain active criminal intelligence information and are part of an active investigation, and they might record the “killing of a person.”

But the media organizations say that’s contradictory to what the FBI and local law enforcement officials have stated about part of that night.

“The federal government has stated that there were no reports of gunfire during the three-hour standoff,” the lawsuit says.

“Thus no recordings created during that time could have captured any killings.”

The city filed a countersuit against the AP seeking declaratory relief and guidance from a judge on what calls should be released, according to a city press release.

“It is important that we are completely open with the community about what happened that night at Pulse,” says Mayor Buddy Dyer in a statement. “We support the FBI’s commitment not to compromise the integrity of the investigation, but we must balance that with our responsibility to be transparent with the Orlando community and comply with state and federal laws.”

ays before Florida’s new law restricting abortion clinics was to go into effect, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 5-3 vote against clinic restrictions in Texas.

The justices found two parts of Texas’ law, HB 2, unconstitutional: the admitting privileges requirement, which mandates abortion clinic doctors must have the ability to admit their patients to a hospital no further than 30 miles away; and the surgical center requirement, which requires clinics to meet the same standards as ambulatory surgical centers. After the law passed, about half of Texas’ abortion providers closed their doors.

“We conclude that neither of these provisions offers medical benefits sufficient to justify the burdens upon access that each imposes,” writes Justice Stephen Breyer in the majority opinion. “Each places a substantial obstacle in the path of women seeking a pre-viability abortion, each constitutes an undue burden on abortion access … and each violates the Federal Constitution.”

“When a state severely limits access to safe and legal procedures, women in desperate circumstances may resort to unlicensed rogue practitioners, faute de mieux, at great risk to their health and safety,” she writes. “Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers laws like HB 2 that ‘do little or nothing for health, but rather strew impediments to abortion,’ cannot survive judicial inspection.”

Florida’s law, HB 1411, requires abortion clinic doctors to have admitting privileges or transfer agreements with nearby hospitals and be treated more like surgical centers. One of the proponents of the Florida bill, state Sen. Kelli Stargel, previously said lawmakers modeled HB 1411 to be “constitutional.”

“This is a landmark decision that sends a strong message that laws that restrict access to abortion under the guise of protecting women are unconstitutional,” says Lillian Tamayo, president of the Planned Parenthood of South, East and North Florida in a statement. “Here in Florida, women’s access to care is still very much under threat.” mcordeiro@orlandoweekly.com

Run, Marco, run Marco Rubio wants to trot back into our hearts – and into the U.S. Senate

about whether he wants to run for the U.S. Senate again, Rubio decided Floridians have not had enough of him and announced his re-election bid last Wednesday. The same day, Quinnipiac University released a poll that interviewed 975 Florida voters regarding the Florida Senate race. None of the current Republican candidates for the Senate has a lead over Democratic contenders U.S. Reps. Alan Grayson and Patrick Murphy, but if Rubio joined the race, the poll shows him beating both Grayson, at 48 to 40 percent, and Murphy, at 47 to 40 percent.

It’s not surprising, when you think about the tough primary Grayson and Murphy have been duking out as the press ignores Democratic underdog Pam Keith and discovers transgressions on both their records – Murphy on his résumé and Grayson on his hedge fund. Rubio’s rival and friend Lt. Gov. Carlos LópezCantera left the Senate race after Rubio’s announcement and Orlando defense contractor Todd Wilcox dropped oout last Friday, leaving Sarasota developer Carlos

Grayson’s campaign manager, Mike Ceraso, says in a statement that the Orlando representative “welcomes the chance” to beat “No Show Marco.”

“It’s shameful that Marco is trying to use the Orlando tragedy to further his 2020 presidential ambitions from a Senate seat that he’s barely sat in,” the statement says. “Floridians will see through it. The Trump-Rubio ticket will fail.”

Why do the Democratic contenders keep mentioning Orlando? Because while the city suffered horrifying losses on June 12, becoming the site of the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history with 49 dead and 53 wounded, Rubio came to Orlando, saw our suffering and the next day told a radio host he was “deeply impacted” by the tragedy and was rethinking his political career.

Susan MacManus, a political scientist at the University of South Florida, explains that during the Republican presidential debates, Rubio was able to shine with his knowledge of terrorism and foreign policy, and the terrorism dimension of the massacre may have been a link to his decision.

But MacManus says she can’t tell right now how Rubio would do. For one, the Pulse shootings happened in the swing part of a swing state, and it largely affected LGBTQ Latinos, especially Puerto Ricans. Aside from Rubio’s previous antiLGBT policies, the community might have another grudge with the Cuban-American politician – he was against expanding bankruptcy protections to Puerto Rico during the U.S. commonwealth’s continuing financial crisis, which ultimately is leading to the mass exodus of boricuas coming to the Central Florida area.

Rubio’s political future is also inextricably tied to Trump, who does not have a great reputation nowadays among Latinos, MacManus says.

“From the get-go, both [Rubio] and Jeb Bush have been very much critical of Trump and other Republicans in other states who want to bash Hispanics because they know that the demographics of Florida are such that if you do that, you’re not going to have a party that can win statewide elections,” she says. “The irony is, they’re still tied together, because voter turnout at the top level of the ticket for Trump can affect Rubio’s race as well.”

Either way, it’s clear Floridians will have to make a choice Aug. 30 among the Democratic and Republican Senate candidates with our guts – a choice between who we can stomach and who makes us barf. mcordeiro@orlandoweekly.com

bout a month ago, U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio participated in a triedand-true political tradition – the Twitter rant.

Marquito had some harsh words for the Washington Post regarding his future civic aspirations after an embarrassing loss in Florida’s primary elections forced him to drop out of the presidential race. The Post had talked to unnamed sources about why Rubio would never be Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump’s vice president. During his sarcastic jabs toward reporters using anonymous insiders who aren’t actually close to him, Rubio tweeted: “Another genius line claims that I’m ‘a bit at sea in terms of his next step politically’. Ummmm not really,” he says in one tweet. In another: “I have only said like 10000 times I will be a private citizen in January.”

And so last week, Rubio participated in another time-honored political tradition – going back on his word.

After being wishy-washy for weeks

Beruff, who Gov. Rick Scott has come out to support, the only Republican currently left in the race.

“With Republican national leaders worried about keeping control of the U.S. Senate, Sen. Marco Rubio might ride to their rescue if he decides to reverse field and seek re-election,” says Peter Brown, the Quinnipiac poll’s assistant director, in a statement. “If Rubio’s last-minute decision is to seek re-election, he could be in the driver’s seat.”

In a long-winded letter on his new reelection website titled “Why I’m Running,” Rubio says that while the Senate can be a frustrating place, it’s also a place where great policy advances can be made.

“In politics, admitting you’ve changed your mind is not something most people like to do,” he says. “I understand my opponents will try to use this decision to score political points against me. Have at it. Because I have never claimed to be perfect, or to have all the answers.”

Rubio says no matter whom America chooses – Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump – there’s “reason to worry.” Rubio contends a Republican-controlled Senate could curb the excesses of whoever is elected.

“With Hillary Clinton, we would have four more years of the same failed economic policies that have left us with a stagnant economy. We would have four more years of the same failed foreign policy that has allowed radical Islam to spread, and terrorists to be released from Guantanamo,” the letter says. “The prospect of a Trump presidency is also worrisome to me. …

His positions on many key issues are still unknown. And some of his statements, especially about women and minorities, I find not just offensive but unacceptable. If he is elected, we will need senators willing to encourage him in the right direction, and if necessary, stand up to him. I’ve proven a willingness to do both.”

That’s a little strange because up until a hot minute ago, Rubio was supporting Trump, though to his credit, Rubio did say he wouldn’t trust Trump with the nuclear codes. The reaction from the other end of the political spectrum was swift, with Democrats calling him an opportunist who easily abandoned his constituents for a presidential run. In a phone call with reporters, Murphy, the favorite among the Democratic establishment, says he is shocked by the arrogance of Rubio refusing to say whether he will serve the full six-year term or run again for president in 2020.

“It’s clear that Marco Rubio has always put his ambition above the people he’s supposed to represent,” Murphy says.

“How can Floridians trust someone who continually breaks his word? Rubio has even refused to say that he will serve a full term in the Senate. The families in

Theater of cruelty Noelle Mason’s art assaults the senses of an Orlando still reeling from the impact of the Pulse shootings

ast month, just before the Orlando Museum of Art opened this year’s Florida Prize in Contemporary Art exhibition, they offered local media a preview. As we walked through the galleries the mood was, as is usual at these things, engaged but casual. As we rounded a corner to confront the section devoted to several works by Noelle Mason, the tone changed abruptly. We’d been laughing at Anthea Behm’s witty video piece, a mashup of Theodor Adorno’s Aesthetic Theory and John Hughes’ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, when we encountered Mason’s massive installation “Love Letters/White Flag: The Book of God.” Almost all of us went still, to varying degrees, as one by one we realized what we were looking at: two walls covered from knee-height to well overhead with embroidered reproductions of pages from Columbine killer Eric Harris’ journal.

Dozens of lacy vintage handkerchiefs were painstakingly hand-stitched with replicas of the notes, diagrams and newspaper clippings Harris collected in his journal.

(PDFs from the journal are widely available online after the Colorado Supreme Court ruled them public under the Colorado Open Records and Criminal Justice Records Act.) Some of it is banal – lists of girls’ names or the meandering beginnings of homework assignments – and some of it is blood-chilling: a diagram of the library with exits marked; a school report on gun violence jointly researched and submitted by Harris and Dylan Klebold.

The parents in the group were most disturbed. The installation clearly stirred the fear of school shootings shared by anyone who sends their kids off into someone else’s supervision every day. But none of us could 12

know then how close to home the piece would hit just a few weeks later, as the Pulse nightclub shootings shredded the whole city’s sense of security. Looking at it now seems almost unbearable.

“The events of the past week were tragic beyond belief for many reasons,” Mason said to Orlando Weekly in an interview just after the Orlando shootings. “Our culture of violence and fear is intensifying every year.”

Among Mason’s many pieces installed in the Florida Prize show, there’s another representation of the Columbine incident: a cross-stitched cotton tapestry of a surveillance camera image of Klebold and Harris in the school library. The stitching faithfully captures the graininess, warped color and moiré effect, artifacts of a blown-up video still, each little X standing in for an individual pixel.

When told that her works are disturbing, Mason counters, “I’m glad that the works are disturbing. Contemporary art should be uncomfortable; it should challenge the way we look at the world.” She goes on to note that our culture of violence is so much the status quo that a big shakeup must challenge this world. “It shouldn’t always be a comfortable process to make or view art,” Mason declares, adding that the artist’s job “is to push culture in a way that has the potential to change the status quo.”

Mason’s body of work examines how mediation like TV screens or newsprint affects our response to tragic events. From the Rodney King beating to Columbine to al-Qaida beheading videos, Mason extracts images of violence – many caught on surveillance tapes, an obsession of hers – and forces us to interact with this information in a new way. It’s still interpolated, but the unexpected form (embroidery, tapestry) refreshes the horror.

It might be reductionist to draw a perfectly straight line from her childhood to this work, but Mason’s father was a SWAT sniper on the team sent in to confront gunman James Huberty in the 1984 San Ysidro shooting that killed 21, and Mason has spoken of wanting to confront this experience directly at some point. “We must address the polarizing, anti-democratic and broken political state, the media’s attitude, and violence as a public health issue. There is so much work we have to do as a culture,” she says.

Mason’s projects tend to have long timelines, in order to modulate the emotional range she goes through when meditating on the people behind the violence, and she hopes the viewer goes through a similar process: “When you have to sit with a sensational image in a quiet space like a museum, it changes that image.” Allowing the viewer to think, instead of being barked at by a TV reporter, might bring more people to understand contemporary violence, and perhaps even converge upon a solution. arts@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

New rides Skull Island: Reign of Kong and Frozen Ever After confound the conventional wisdom on Universal and Disney

According to theme park internet

forums, there are some inviolate assumptions about the differences between Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando: Disney builds attractions around evergreen intellectual properties, while Universal licenses pop-culture flashes-in-the-pan.

Universal rips out their old favorites instead of expanding, but Disney preserves their parks’ history. Disney designs dimensional sets and old-fashioned animatronics, instead of using video projections like Universal.

Universal’s new rides always break down, but Disney tests everything extensively before opening. Then along come a couple of brand-new rides – Islands of Adventure’s Skull Island: Reign of Kong and Epcot’s Frozen Ever After – that completely confound the conventional wisdom about Orlando’s competing colossi and their relative strengths.

At press time, no formal opening ceremony has been held for either attraction, and media events canceled in the wake of the Pulse shooting haven’t yet been rescheduled. Universal started “technical rehearsal” previews of Skull Island several weeks ago but hasn’t announced an official opening date. Frozen Ever After flung open its doors on June 21 without fanfare or a soft opening, and the results weren’t pretty. So take my analysis with a grain of salt, since some attraction elements may still be works in progress, and not as a guarantee you’ll get to ride if going to the parks today.

For longtime Universal Studios Florida fans, the return of the King is kind of a big deal. For more than a decade, the 800-pound gorilla in the room has been the absence of the park’s iconic ape, who was evicted from his opening day Kongfrontation attraction

Skull Island: Reign of Kong by the Revenge of the Mummy roller coaster in 2002. Fans have been agitating for his return ever since, and rumors of Kong’s comeback heated up a few years ago after the 360-degree 3-D replacement for Universal Studios Hollywood’s incinerated robotic Kong proved a king-sized hit.

Kong may be back, but he’s not your mom’s monstrous monkey. Unlike the New York-based original, the new Skull Island: Reign of Kong ride is located in the other Universal park, tucked between IOA’s Jurassic Park and Toon Lagoon, and is aesthetically inspired by Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake (with an even looser link to the upcoming prequel) rather than the 1933 or 1976 films. Instead of an elevated tram, guests board ginormous safari-style trucks helmed by animatronic drivers for an indoor-outdoor expedition through ancient jungle temples teeming with bats, bugs and prehistoric beasts, all brought to life through a seamless blend of physical props and expansive 3-D screens.

Skull Island succeeds on many levels, from its stunning stone facade and spooky queue – featuring creepy animatronics, live scareactors and a surfeit of skulls – to the finale’s simian show-stopper, a robotic King Kong bust with fantastically expressive facial features. But despite a substantial six-minute running time, Reign of Kong feels abbreviated and anticlimactic, largely because the central 360-degree 3-D sequence (which recycles animation from the Hollywood version) doesn’t connect with characters from the ride’s first half. Plot holes may be overlooked considering the impressive technology, but flawed storytelling prevents Reign of Kong from reaching its full E-Ticket potential. (There’s also problematic racial imagery involving the “native” characters, but that’s a topic for a whole ’nother column.)

While Universal fans had sky-high expectations for the built-from-scratch Skull Island, many Disney devotees (myself included) weren’t excited for a Frozenthemed overlay of Maelstrom, Epcot’s charmingly incoherent Norwegian boat ride. Of course, those qualms didn’t stop passholders from snatching all available first-day FastPass+ reservations a month in advance, and forming a 300-minute standby queue that literally stretched all the way to China (the pavilion, at least).

Cultural cannibalism and queue chaos aside, I couldn’t comprehend how the Imagineers could preserve the old flume track while creating an all-new experience, but I’m happy to admit that Frozen Ever After proved me wrong by elevating an aging C-ticket into a first-rate D-Ticket.

Relocating the lavishly decorated queue and boarding dock created room for additional scenes, boosting the ride’s length to nearly five minutes, and apart from a couple of conspicuously blank sections, the new digitally enhanced sets are far more exciting than the old blacklight flats. The semi-sequel story is simple but straightforward, and all your favorite earworm melodies are reprised with rewritten lyrics.

Best of all, Frozen Ever After features the most lifelike animatronics I’ve ever seen, with rear-projected faces and fluid limb movements that enter the uncanny valley and very nearly climb back out the other side. I’d ride over and over just to watch Elsa waggle her robotic wrists, and I weep for the world of robotic massage parlors our descendants will inherit. But until they can reduce the wait time to a reasonable length by improving throughput up over 1,000 riders per hour and decreasing the regular outages and evacuations, I’m going to advise you to “let it go” for now. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

ometimes, hidden restaurants need to remain hidden, left to fester deep within the shadows of the unseen and as far away from the unwitting restaurant-going public (and those given to benighted crowd-sourced posts) as possible. “Hope makes a good breakfast,” goes the saying, “but a bad supper.”

My preamble is aimed at Butter Chicken, the newish Indian restaurant with hoary soul and listless mien situated in an equally hoary and listless strip of Winter Park. A diamond in the rough this is not, though with a decor whose design cues seemed pilfered from my aunt’s living room in Birmingham, England, circa 1981, I had hopes. No, it’s dour from top to bottom, and the dismal and dispiriting dishes – delivered to us by novice servers blissfully ignorant of Indian cuisine in general – paid even greater homage to the pervading Thatcherian austerity of that time.

“Fresh,” “vibrant,” “rich” and “decadent” were not words that sprung to mind when a somber plate of samosa chaat ($6.98) arrived at our table. Crusts on the quartered veg-filled pastries were either chewy or crackling hard, likely because the

samosas were old, or were frozen, or both.

Suffocating them with a marauding layer of chickpeas and a heavy-handed goop of yogurt and tamarind sauce in an effort to make them palatable was about the only sign of creativity exhibited by the kitchen.

After sampling boneless chunks of chewy, savorless lamb kebab ($9.98) in a lifeless tossing of onions and peppers, our discussion grew animated, but it didn’t take long for us to note the disproportionate decibel level of our voices compared to the odd ambient acoustics. Anything above a whisper was too disruptive; anything less and you’d need to read lips. As aurally uncomfortable as it was, the shard of torn vinyl projecting from the seat and into the back of my thigh proved just as uncomfortable on a more tactile level. And it’s not like any semblance of comfort was offered in the tepid bowl of aloo bodi soup ($4.98) either, its bland tomatoey broth teeming with a disintegration of potatoes, black-eyed peas and bamboo shoots. The Nepalese staple might reflect the heritage of the father-and-son tandem running the place, but in no way does it reflect anything else.

On ordering tandoor-grilled xacuti chicken ($14.98), the server’s “Are you sure you want it Indian hot?” retort had us believing the dish would be served on the unfurled tongue of a fire-breathing serpent

beast summoned from the fiery depths of the Underworld. Sadly, the Goan specialty was mild enough to serve to a Norwegian toddler. Another dish that caught our eye – “mint grilled chicken” ($13.98) – was ultimately passed on, as the menu described it as “deep-fried patties stuffed with fresh ground lamb.” Truth.

Then, the vaunted butter chicken ($13.98). I’ll just say this: Never before have I tasted butter chicken simultaneously too salty and too sweet. Side note: When paratha ($3.98) was ordered for dipping purposes, the server’s response was, “Paratha? Is that a vegetable?” Maybe the bread wouldn’t have had such a cardboardy texture if it were.

And it’s not like the owner was any better. At one point, he came by to say we should hurry up, as our entrées were ready.

Normally I’d take offense, but in this case, we readily obliged. The quicker we got through this meal, the better it’d be for everybody.

Ordering dessert seemed pointless, so we asked for chai ($3.10) instead. “Chai? I’m not sure if we have that,” said the server.

Why would you? I thought. You’re only an Indian restaurant, after all. When it arrived, my dining comrade remarked, “Tastes like dishwater.”

Dishwater! Now that’s really harsh.

OPENING THIS WEEK Hunt for the Wilderpeople On the heels of a showing at Sundance – and, far more prestigiously, the Florida Film Festival – comes this story of a 13-year-old in New Zealand who takes it on the lam rather than get shuttled to yet another foster home. Director Taika Waititi made the acclaimed vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows and will next pit the God of Thunder against the Hulk in the third Thor picture – so honestly, there’s no telling what that Kiwi kid might encounter on his journey. Not to mention that his foster uncle, who accompanies him on said flight, is played by Sam Neill – whom some of us will never be able to think of as anything but the son of Satan. Have fun out there, fellas! (PG-13)

The Legend of Tarzan Good old Tarzan: You just can’t keep him down. But boy, does Hollywood keep trying. From Bo Derek deepthroating a banana to Andie MacDowell acting as a ventriloquist dummy for Glenn Close, there’ve been more ignominious moments attached to Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Lord of the Apes than to almost any iconic adventure character. In a few weeks, we’ll know if any specific element deep-sixed this latest iteration of the vine-swinging franchise, which is already tracking poorly as the critical holiday weekend looms. Maybe the character has just finally outlived his relevance. That’s what happened to the Lone Ranger, right? Oh, wait – Johnny Depp with a dead bird on his head. (PG-13) The Purge: Election Year I’ve always been a big supporter of cheapo shock flicks that purport to make a statement about social justice.

Sure, they’re usually clumsy, on-the-nose and exploitative of the very

violence they claim to condemn. But nobody’s perfect, right? Given those realistic parameters, the first Purge picture knocked at least one of my socks off; any movie that ends with the line “This country has taken everything from me” has an intrinsic appeal to my inner John Carpenter. So I guess I should be championing this third installment, in which a lady senator who’s also the front-runner for the U.S. presidency tries to shut down the annual Purge, only to get caught up in it. Delightfully timely, right? Well, more in concept than in tone, given that Pulse has drained a lot of us of our appetite for recreational violence, even when it’s ostensibly in the service of pop-political satire. I’m actually kind of surprised that the release of this film wasn’t at least postponed a few weeks. Then again, not even the revelation that a Cincinnati man had cited the series as his inspiration for killing two people got the studio to blink. So full speed ahead, I guess – just consider this your trigger warning. (R)

e movie fans must be forgiven for supposing that an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved book The BFG by screenwriter Melissa Mathison and director Steven Spielberg – their first collaboration since 1982’s E.T. – would be cause for celebration. Here is another story about a lonely child who befriends a mysterious creature and has an adventure that changes her life for the better … and yet my only sense of wonder came from wondering where master cinematic fantasist Spielberg has disappeared to.

For a movie about giants and the expansive power of dreams, The BFG feels rather small. Oh, there are most certainly giants, and they most certainly roam a sweeping landscape. And there are certainly dreams, and they certainly inspire some very important people to some very impressive action. But for far too long up on that screen, not much actually happens. And there’s never much that hits you in the gut or the heart like E.T. did.

Much of the failure of BFG to connect emotionally is down to its too-passive protagonist. Young star Ruby Barnhill is

bursting with personality, but her Sophie, a 10-year-old orphan, isn’t allowed by the plot to actually do much of anything for a solid hour or more of the movie. She is literally dragged kicking and screaming into the plot.

She will later befriend the giant who scoops her out of her London orphanage and carries her away to the distant land of giants, but Sophie is a mystery both as a character in her own right and, in a more meta sense, as someone worthy of having a story constructed around her. We know that Sophie is a prematurely grown-up insomniac who wanders her orphanage at night tidying up after her irresponsible adult caretakers, but we have no idea what she might prefer her life to be like beyond the unspoken obvious (such as, perhaps, not living in an orphanage with people who don’t love her). Just a tiny thing like Sophie actively joining the giant on his adventures rather than being kidnapped by him would have gone a long way toward making Sophie a participant in her own story rather than a hanger-on.

The too much that doesn’t actually happen for the first half of The BFG is Sophie getting a tour around the gigantic home of the BFG (Mark Rylance, motion-captured and CGI’ed), learning about his work – he gathers dreams from children, which is why he skulks around city orphanages – and discovering that he is bullied by the other giants. Some of this is momentarily lovely, as

Justin Bieber is at a pivotal moment in his career. Can he make the transition?

A

t a mere 22 years old, Justin Bieber has become a force of nature beyond his own control. A ubiquitous figure like Bieber commands so many differing perspectives that it causes a journalistic dilemma; the ways one could attempt to examine his place in the cultural zeitgeist are innumerable. It wouldn’t feel right to simply write a by-the-numbers, song-titlesand-chart-positions profile. And if you analyze

him in a vacuum, that assessment will only hold true temporarily – how can you accurately write about who someone is if that person doesn’t even know who he is? The last thing I would want to do is portray Justin as something he’s not. He deals with that enough as it is.

From the onset, Purpose (Bieber’s fourth studio album, released November 2015) isn’t too ground-breaking from a pop point of view. It’s solid, catchy, effective and easily consumable.

That’s everything you want pop to be. But underneath that fine-tuned 2016 aesthetic lies an artist trying to find his niche. The album’s production (Diplo, Skrillex, Axident, Soundz and Ian Kirkpatrick are just a few of the heavy hitters

with producer credits on Purpose) is an amalgamation of all the popular sounds of today, thrown in a stew and synthesized into pop casserole.

The efficiency with which producers at the top of the game are able to encapsulate and emulate an artist while simultaneously keeping the work distinctive is astonishing. It’s a machine worthy of respect. But underneath that top layer of sheen lies an artist – a person – trying to find which lane works best for him. Songs on Purpose are played safe, not taken to their full progression, almost like rough drafts: Throw ideas into the sea and see what floats.

But even in the core of a machine, there’s a human being that must be the face and soul of it. The heart of a record cannot be automated. That’s still something that comes from within the centerpiece, and Bieber has found a way to express that in a way that’s digestible to millions.

Our friend Justin has had a rough few years. Bar fights, arrests for drag racing, drinking Henny straight from the bottle at Rae Sremmurd shows (for those not in the know: Taking your Henny straight from the bottle in the club is the ultimate “I’m a man now, mama” move). Now, none of these things are truly out of the ordinary for someone his age, but because of his … unique position in pop culture, a magnifying glass is put on his every move.

To his detriment, and to ours. A growing teen budding his wings under the harsh Hollywood lights? That pressure has crumbled many, and will continue to do so as long as the industry of celebrity voyeurism is a major player in the game. (Just ask Britney.)

Bieber is a vestige of a foregone era.

Bieber would have been much better off fronting some Y2K-era boyband, in oversized denim overalls and frosted tips, in a time when images were created (and meticulously protected) by professionals. The weight of being real was lifted. A pop star could put himself on voicemail.

The original Justin (Timberlake) (aka the inspiration behind a lot of readers’ frosted-tip phases) had a similar career path to Bieber, yet was somehow able to navigate his way through puberty in public fairly unscathed (with the exception of a certain hideous denim suit). Timberlake was never caught passed out with hookers in Brazil, or pissing into a janitor’s mop bucket while dead drunk.

Maybe Timberlake was just a choir boy.

Maybe he was a young Keith Richards.

We’ll never know.

that it is now basically impossible to maintain any sort of persona that is not at least somewhat based on who you actually are. Eventually any constructed facade will fall. (Just ask Iggy Azalea.) You can’t just sell whatever image you want without people crosschecking its authenticity anymore.

That’s what happens when every person on earth has the wealth of all human knowledge at their fingertips; people start checking the receipts.

Once upon a time, any emotional outbursts or range outside that of a QVC pitchman mildly excited about a blender were covered up or downplayed. But in the age of social media, when people have instant and constant access to every aspect of your life, the piety and perfection that were once en vogue among celebrities no longer exist. In the new pop-star paradigm, sharing personal feelings and exposing your vulnerabilities on the national stage is practically a requirement.

No longer are pop stars shuffled away behind closed doors into rehab centers and mental health facilities under the guise of “fatigue” (at least, not convincingly), but that honesty also erases any vestige of privacy.

The modern pop star must have some balance of humanity. If they’re cold, corporate plastics, they won’t be able to make meaningful human connections with fans.

The pop stars that seem to exist in the highest echelon of longevity and relevancy seem to be the ones that break out of the PR mold in spectacular fashion, the ones that break the rules: Frown when told to smile. Speak when told to be quiet. Get crazier when told to tone it down. There are numerous ways to achieve this – the options are limitless – but the overall goal is to destroy your adolescent image while simultaneously creating a new adult persona, so your career can continue on an upward trend. Sometimes you gotta get wasted and drag race down South Beach at 3 a.m. if you don’t want to end up in the bargain bin.

Sometimes you gotta buy a monkey, and abandon it, just to keep your name ringing out.

Every mistake, every vulnerability, every fear, every want, hope or need, is public record. Think of a reality in which every stupid thing you did when you were 19 has its own Wikipedia page. That is not a reality many, if any, of us can imagine dealing with. In the glare of the lights, how’s Bieber supposed to actually find his purpose?

Prime evil Rejuvenated British metal pioneers hit the road for an intimate club tour

t’s early in the morning and Mantas, founding member and guitarist of legendary British metal lords Venom Inc., is in a Wal-Mart parking lot matter-offactly shattering a cherished metal myth while on the phone with Orlando Weekly.

He’s talking about the genesis of the occult anthem “Black Metal,” a song that inspired several generations of metal musicians to kick up an unholy racket in service to the Dark Lord. “I wrote that while I was taking a dump on the toilet,” he deadpans. “That is the absolute truth. Some people take a magazine into the toilet, I took a guitar in, and ‘Black Metal’ was born!” Heavy.

This is Venom Inc. – or just Venom, depending on whom you ask – circa 2016.

Dispensing with myth and mystique, hitting the road on a sweaty club tour with a set heavy on thrashy classics, stripped lean of any fat or pageantry. Just to back-

track briefly, Venom (pre-Inc.) burst out of the U.K. metal scene in 1981 with a raw, noisy sound that owed as much to the punk spirit as it did to Priest (Judas, that is), and then upped the ante with overt Satanic imagery that made even Sabbath seem tame, with baphomets festooned over everything. Venom delivered beyond mere shock, though, with songs like “Black Metal,” “Countess Bathory” and “In League With Satan” still sounding fresh and underground many decades later.

Fast-forward through the intervening years and the usual infighting that happens in bands of any stripe, and Venom has split into two. Mercurial frontman Cronos fronts a “Venom,” but the rest of the classic trio – guitarist-songwriter Mantas and drummer Abaddon – reconvened about a year ago as Venom Inc. with the addition of bassist-vocalist Tony “Demolition Man” Dolan. Dolan is the Dio to Venom’s Black Sabbath (forgive the tortured metaphor), a dynamo of a frontman who fronted the band during a brief spell at the dawn of the ’90s for a few solid albums, including Prime Evil and Temples of Ice. And now they’re on

a never-ending tour – China, Japan, South America, the U.S. – and are playing any club that dares book them.

“It’s about paying dues again,” enthuses the motivational-speaker-level affable Dolan. “Venom never did extensive touring. It’s very easy just to do festivals, where everything is provided for you. And you’re in danger of becoming a cabaret. But I thought it was very important that we go back to a grass-roots level and get as close to the fans as we could.” And though one never thinks of cult bands being conscious crowd-pleasers, Mantas stressed that they kept the setlist selections very simple: “Everybody wants to hear the classics, it’s as simple as that.” No jazz odyssey, is basically what he’s saying.

Beyond any sort of veneer of cool or whatever, both Dolan and Mantas seem genuinely humbled by the response they’re getting back from audiences. Dolan speaks admiringly of a recent interaction: “The other night we were in Bellingham and an older man with a big white beard and white hair came up and said, ‘Man, I could have cried through your whole set, I’ve waited 30 years to see that.’” Even Mantas is at a temporary loss for words: “I was just a young kid from Newcastle, I wrote some songs and … fucking hell. The stars aligned, right time, right place and that was it. I’m in my 60s now and I feel more energized than ever. It’s incredible.” music@orlandoweekly.com

rlando has always been misunderstood. We’re known for our boy bands and middle-aged subpar rockers, theme parks, selfie sticks and outrageous news stories. But what outsiders aren’t aware of are things like a vibrant punk scene, an exceptional and growing number of business owners, and an overly supportive community with so much crossover that never fails to come together.

Especially in times of need.

As a promoter in the area for more than seven years, and a musician here for longer 28

than I’d like to admit, I’ve been fortunate enough to have a front-row seat to the rich and unquestioning cultural atmosphere that this town has to offer. I’ve played, booked, and seen some of my favorite shows at the Plaza Live, and even sold merch in the same exact spot where Christina Grimmie tragically lost her life. As a teen, I drooled over the show calendar at Dante’s (the venue that would later become Pulse), but was too young to go to any of them. Friends of mine and I have frequented places like Southern Nights and Hamburger Mary’s; we shot part of a music video at the Parliament House while dancing with some of O-Town’s biggest names in drag. Some of our best local bands and college radio DJs are members of the LGBTQ community, and have turned us all on to some truly great new music.

We’re lucky to have alternative venues like St. Matthew’s Tavern, the Space Station and Stardust Video & Coffee, which the LGBTQ music community has gravitated toward as safe spaces to hang and perform. And earlier this year, Will’s Pub added a very straightforward sign to their door that reads, “If you are racist, sexist, homophobic, or an asshole, don’t come in.”

In addition to the mass turnout of sweethearts at blood banks, funerals and vigils, many members of the music and arts community have also been quick to help.

Bands like You Blew It!, Teen Agers and Fortune Howl, along with film events like Uncomfortable Brunch, design gurus AIGA and countless other indie-culture groups, are all donating their efforts through music, apparel, art and screenings with proceeds going to the Center, a safe haven for Orlando’s LGBTQ community.

St. Pete’s Set and Setting have been sonically stunning here the past several years so the idea of seeing them in a uniquely up-close situation like DIY venue the Space Station (June 21) was exciting.

But, after experiencing their stentorian force in a pro venue with pro sound, how their signature roar would play in a small personal room like this was a real question. Now I know the answer, and it’s like a military helicopter touching down in your living room. In a mammoth arrangement of two guitarists and two drummers who all attack at maxedout shoegaze volume, they pack a sound that’s supernatural in its immensity, overwhelming any limitations even in a guerrilla venue like this.

Set and Setting are one of the best heavy post-rock bands alive. Masters of both mass and craft, they have a more perfectly concise, climactic and tasteful take on the genre than practically anyone right now.

This is next-level stuff that is absolutely ripe for prime time.

Opening was local duo Freakazoid.

Like their name promises, their sound is a completely berserk head-on collision of hardcore and metal. It’s a wild maelstrom of extreme musical forces and outré sensibility. Their furious scribbles definitely won’t do shit for your nerves with all

Set and Setting pack a sound that’s supernatural in its immensity, overwhelming any limitations even in a guerrilla venue like this. the shrieks, angles and speed, but this twosome can push the pulse with some raw, ravaging excitement.

Closing was Hivelords, a progressive black-metal band from Philadelphia, one of the current hotbeds of heavy music to which Orlando has lost some of its own musicians and bands. Live, they’re a little less dark and more clarified than on record, but respectably blistering just the same. And, apparently, they have a huge Godfather jones. That’s the only thing to call it when a band has a T-shirt design that’s a total hesher rip of the iconic “puppet master” logo and opens their set with a headbanging version of the movie’s theme song, which is quite possibly the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard at a metal show.

Richie Ramone (June 24, Will’s Pub) was an ’80s-era drummer for, duh, the Ramones. Measuring his solo work against one of history’s most seminal and iconic punk bands may seem daunting and impossibly unfair, but he’s the one still running with that commodified band alias. That’s the thing with famous association. It gets people in the door, but then what? With great cachet comes great expectation.

He does have some lead singing and songwriting credits with the Ramones, though nothing that could be called truly classic. Furthermore, there’s only so much currency from being in a legendary band when you’re not one of the original gangsters. In the end, really, your art is on its own. And on that count, meh. He was a Ramone, his band played some Ramones songs, but they’re no Ramones. Their own music is stylistically unremarkable and interesting perhaps only to the fogey contingent of the Warped Tour.

Luckily, the local openers packed more pound-for-pound nourishment. Swift Knuckle Solution sounds like one serious martial arts flick but they’re a tight, unified Orlando unit stocked with credentialed veterans. They do melodies but they come fast and hard with ’80s hardcore velocity. It’s a classic style done with total devotion, straight fidelity and some pretty impressive force.

On the younger end were pop-punks Abandon the Midwest. My initial introduction to their music was a couple of years ago when a band member handed me a CD at the Florida Music Festival.

It struck me as affable but generic, and I promptly shelved it. But since then, it seems they’ve ripened as a group and sharpened their compass. Now their previously cherubic sing-alongs roll with a little more gravel in the throat and hair on the chest, just enough gruffness to imbue their melodic hearts with some guts. Quintron and Miss Pussycat MUSIC

At the risk of sounding hyperbolic (ah, fuck it), Quintron and Miss Pussycat are true American originals. A near-perfect mix of Suicide, Dr. Frankenstein, Mr. Rogers and Little Richard, this dynamic duo has been consistently electrifying audiences with DIY punk/soul/noise boogie while also creating whole new universes of musical instruments and alternate-reality puppetry for several decades running. All while seemingly never aging. The New Orleans institutions are on the road yet again, on what seems to be their annual swing through swampy Florida. Are they touring behind anything new?

It doesn’t really matter. Quintron and Miss Pussycat live is something that can’t be easily quantified in the music biz market – it’s like an old-timey travelling road show: You get a puppet show, some testifyin’, and an hour or so of the most sacrilegious gospel you’ve ever heard, with a dance party to boot. Uncomfortable Brunch Presents: Boys Don’t Cry FILM

Though the original selection for this month’s Uncomfortable Brunch, Straw Dogs, was a really smart pick for the Fourth of July weekend, the events at Pulse necessitated a switch. Instead, Uncomfortable Brunch is partnering with the GLBT Community Center to present the 1999 biopic Boys Don’t Cry. The film tells the tale of Brandon Teena, a trans man who was beaten, raped and murdered when his birth sex was discovered by two male acquaintances. And sadly, we still have to deal with that kind of fear and violence 17 years later. Hilary Swank, who plays Brandon, won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the fim, and co-star Chloë Sevigny was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. All of the proceeds from the screening will be donated to the Center, so do your best to sell this screening out. – Thaddeus McCollum

First came the full-length The Impossible Kid in April, an album on which Rock simultaneously handled the lion’s share of the production end and went way deeper into his own psyche lyrically, resulting in what might be his most complete artistic statement yet. But wait, there’s more! At the end of May, Rock flexed his production muscles again, this time helming the stellar Vigilante Genesis EP for Blueprint.

And since The Shining taught us that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, Rock recently hit the road on a 38-date tour across the country. Yo La Tengo will not be along for this run as his backing band, but that’s no reason not to see a hip-hop artist still innovating after two decades. – MM

Nothing, Wrong MUSIC

This is one of those shows that serious music heads live for. Topped by Wrong and Nothing, the bill features a couple of bands representing the new, more expansive wings of iconic metal label Relapse Records. Loaded with former members of credpacked bands like Torche, Kylesa and Capsule, Wrong are one of the most exciting new hurricanes to blow up recently from the already studded Miami heavy scene.

Their beast of a sound is like a hairier reboot of prime-era Helmet with the danger and claws of noise rock. And springing faithfully from the My Bloody Valentine heritage, Philadelphia’s Nothing (pictured) are one of the most noted neo-shoegaze bands today. Both have impressed here as openers. But on the strength of their own recent albums, they’re now ready to become leading bands. Individually, each of these acts would be worth the trip out. Is it a super douchey move to pretend to be a lesbian to avoid unwanted male attention? I’m a straight single woman in my mid30s and a very plausible lesbian in terms of sartorial stereotypes. Occasionally a guy will hit on me in an awkward or creepy way and I’ll trot out a line about “not being into men.”

Most recently I used this pose when a courier broke down in my driveway and I invited him in for a glass of water while he waited for the tow truck. It was really uncomfortable and a little threatening when – after establishing that I lived alone – he asked me out. I guess I use this as an excuse so as not to hurt their feelings, but also to shut the conversation down as quickly as possible if I’m feeling vulnerable.

Is this a harmless white lie, or a major copout that would offend actual lesbians? Can you suggest some better strategies for when you’re feeling cornered by a dude you’re not interested in?

Lady’s Entirely Zany Identity Enquiry “I’m not offended by this,” said someone I thought was an actual lesbian.

I shared your question with this person – a woman I thought was an actual lesbian – because I wasn’t offended by it either, but wanted to check with an actual lesbian just to be safe. Turns out my friend doesn’t identify as a lesbian, but as a woman-who-loves-women-but-doesnot-identify-as-a-lesbian-because-shesometimes-finds-the-odd-dude-hot. So for the record: my friend is speaking for the WWLWBDNIAALBSSFTODH community here – which often intersects/sexts with the lesbian community – and not the lesbian community.

“But even though I’m not offended by it, I have to say I’ve found the ‘I’m into women’ line to be totally ineffective,” said my nota-lesbian friend. “The creeps I’ve used it on get even more riled up after hearing that line. Sometimes I check out and start ignoring these creeps as if they’re wallpaper, but that can rile them up too. Same with a polite ‘I’m not interested.’ The only success I’ve had with warding off creeps is by actually yelling at them, asking them if they’d like to be treated the way they’re treating me, and if their mothers, sisters, et cetera, would appreciate that treatment.”

My not-a-lesbian friend – who, as it turns out, identifies more strongly with the term “bisexual” than she does WWLWBDNIAALBSSFTODH – has also had some luck with the lose-your-shit strategy (e.g., screaming, yelling and waving your arms around like a crazy person).

“You kind of have to treat these people like bears at a campsite,” said my not-a-lesbian friend. “You have to make yourself big and loud and scary so they don’t get closer.

Because they will get closer.”

I have a difficult question. A dear young friend has recently started being a stripper

for work. I won’t lie: it tears me up. All I feel is sadness and worry – such a nice soul in what I feel is a not-so-nice environment. I really hope I’m wrong. Is there any way in which this can be OK? My thoughts are that no matter how strong a woman is, no one can forget what they see or have to deal with. I worry for the sake of a nice person getting her ass handed to her too often and potentially breaking beyond repair. My gut emotion is that it doesn’t matter how well you handle these situations – what matters is the fact that you see too much ugliness, too often, and get to a point where you forget that there are actually nice humans out there.

I guess my question is: How well can anyone handle this?

I’ve been lying to myself. I told myself that stability and friendship were more important to me than sex. I’ve been with my husband for 12 years, and we’ve been married for five of those. We were best friends, and I was already in love before we started dating and before we ever had sex.
