As very strong Second Amendment supporters, President Reagan and Press Secretary Brady survived an assassination attempt. Reagan, a lifetime NRA member, spent the rest of his career and life supporting manufacturing bans on assault weapons, reducing gun imports, banning cop-killer bullets, and campaigning for the Brady Bill, among other things. Take a moment and read the May 3, 1994, letter that presidents Reagan, Ford and Carter sent to all House members urging them to ban assault weapons. Choose your own web source, of course. Maybe in 2016 the left and the right in Washington can agree to re-adopt a 22-year-old plan that was bipartisan. Presidents from the left and the right opposed these weapons for the sake of protecting the American people, supporting law enforcement personnel and preventing exactly the kind of tragedy that happened in Orlando on June 12, 2016. And the NRA opposed their recommendation, of course, spending millions to block it. It passed by a narrow margin and expired in 2004.

Here’s what we know so far about the mass shooting at Orlando’s gay nightclub Pulse that killed 49 and wounded 53

T

his week has been overwhelming, to say the least, so it’s probably been hard to keep up with all the information about what happened in the early morning of June 12 at the gay nightclub Pulse. After shooting into the crowd during Latin Night around 2 a.m., 29-yearold Omar Mateen spent the next three hours in a bathroom with some of his trapped victims. Police eventually used an armored vehicle to break into Pulse, and as people escaped, Mateen started shooting at officials and was ultimately killed in the gunfire. In total, 49 people, ranging from ages 18 to 50, were killed and 53 were wounded. Much of what happened that morning is still unclear, and law enforcement officials say the investigation surrounding the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history could remain that way for weeks, months and even years.

Here’s what we had learned by Monday: ➤ During the three-hour standoff, Mateen made several calls to 911. The FBI released transcripts of those calls on Monday, June 20. In the first call, which lasted 50 seconds, Mateen pledged his allegiance to ISIS. In the next two hours, Mateen communicated with the crisis negotiation team three times for about 28 minutes. Mateen told officials he was an “Islamic soldier” and asked a negotiator to “tell America to stop bombing Syria and Iraq” and that is why he was “out here right now.” He told them there was a vehicle outside with bombs and implied he had a bomb vest. “You people are going to get it,” the FBI transcript says. “I’m gonna ignite it if they try to do anything stupid.” His last reported words to negotiators were, “In the next few days, you’re going to see more of this type of action going on.” Later, officials reported finding no explosives or improvised explosive devices in his car or inside Pulse, and no evidence of further attacks being planned.

for the attacks, the FBI says there’s no evidence linking Mateen to a foreign group. ➤ Across the world, people lit candles and mourned those lost in the attack.

During the first wakes and funerals for the 49 dead, we heard about their dreams, hopes and the people who loved them. In Orlando, community members stepped up to help those affected by the tragedy and held vigils every day of the week.

On Sunday, June 19, an estimated 50,000 people attended the largest vigil so far at Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando.

Attendees placed candles in impromptu arrangements with flowers, stuffed animals, rainbow flags and signs across the shoreline. Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer told the crowd, “We will not be defined by the hate-filled act of a deranged killer.” ➤ As of Monday, Equality Florida, the state’s largest LGBT civil rights organization, has raised close to $6 million on GoFundMe for “victims’ families, survivors and those in the club who may not have suffered physical injury but are in need of trauma support,” according to a news release. The organization says it’s partnering with the National Center for Victims of Crime to disburse funds to those directly affected within eight weeks. Dyer announced Friday that city officials were working out the legal process of distributing the nearly $7.5 million raised by the city’s OneOrlando Fund directly to victims instead of to nonprofits or other agencies. The city announced the assistance center at the Camping World Stadium for victims’ families and survivors has served more than 600 people after the tragedy and will remain open until Wednesday, June 22. The GLBT Community Center of Central Florida has asked donors to give grocery gift cards to help families with their immediate needs. mcordeiro@orlandoweekly.com

existence is to live life genuinely, and stay true to ourselves. So at 17, she decided to live her truth and told her mother she was a lesbian.

“She really didn’t like that, or like me or my lifestyle,” the now 31-year-old of Cuban and Peruvian descent says. “So I left her. I moved from Miami to New York, and I didn’t talk to her for like four years.”

Ríos didn’t stop loving her mother. But she wanted her to know she wasn’t going to accept intolerance from anybody, even her.

“Family is nice, but your humanity is greater,” she says. “You have to stand your moral ground. That’s the only way change ever happens.”

And on Saturday, she drove from Miami to Orlando to defend the victims who died

“We’re not just going to sit at home and cower while five people can stand out here. We don’t care if there’s just one of them. We’ll come out.”

ocally, LGBTQ Latinxs are still grappling with the fact that this could have easily been one of them but have started a conversation on what it means to live in the intersection of being queer and a person of color.

Carlos Guillermo Smith says it wouldn’t have made a difference if the shooter had attacked on a different night. “Latin Night” just meant Pulse played Elvis Crespo and Aventura, but the people who frequented the club were mostly the same – LGBTQ Latinxs. In the past year, the Central Florida community has seen a surge in Puerto Rican migration as people flee the economic crisis on the island.

Smith, who is the government affairs manager for Equality Florida, says he went to Pulse many times because it was a place where he could “let his hair down, dance to Beyoncé and enjoy a good drag show.” More than a sanctuary, gay clubs are like churches, he says, because they’re affirming spaces where LGBTQ people can be loved and accepted.

“I’m proud of the fact that I’m a gay, Latino man, and I’m proud of that intersectionality,” he says. “I’m a firstgeneration Floridian of Peruvian and French-Canadian heritage, and growing up, I was surrounded by Spanish-speaking relatives, enjoyed Latinx food and spent

mong the many refrains her mother taught her, Kay Ríos kept one saying in her mind the day she left home.

“Cuando te mueras, te van a enterrar sola,” her mother would tell her, which means, “When you die, they will bury you alone.”

Mamis, papis, abuelitas, tías and your metiche neighbor will tell you this when you’re caught sneaking out with your friends to a party or when they find the hidden matching tattoo you got with your bestie. Essentially, they’re trying to say, “Your friends ain’t shit, and when the going gets tough, they won’t have your back.”

But Ríos interpreted the saying differently: What’s important in our short

while living their truth in the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history. A lifetime ago, a gunman walked into Orlando’s packed gay nightclub Pulse during Latin Night in the early hours of Sunday, June 12, unleashing a siege of terror that would ultimately kill 49 people and wound 53.

The people who left us forever included an accountant, a bouncer, college students, pharmacy technicians, dancers, a perfume salesman, fast-food workers, an aspiring firefighter, salon owners, a TV producer, a singer, an Army Reserve captain, theme-park workers and mothers.

As we said goodbye at funerals and wakes this past week, we learned they were loved deeply by their partners, families and friends.

And it’s important to note that although the victims were from different races and sexual identities, they were overwhelmingly composed of queer Latinos, Latinas and Latinxs, the newly coined inclusive, gender-nonspecific term. Their names were Sotomayor, Reyes, Guerrero, DeJesus Velazquez, Alvear, Honorato.

Nearly half of them were Puerto Rican, but there were Mexicans, Dominicans and Cubans, too, and several were undocumented.

Ríos, who lives in this intersection of being queer and Latinx, was in Orlando last weekend as one of hundreds of counter-protesters who stood between the Westboro Baptist Church and funerals at Cathedral Church of St. Luke.

“We had to come out here,” she says.

That intersection has helped me understand that everyone sees the world in a different way.”

Smith says Latinxs, like other religious communities of color, are more socially conservative, which means some gay Latinx men come out later to their families than their white counterparts. Sometimes, they never come out to their families, but the tragedy in Orlando has accelerated the dialogue within this community.

“It’s forcing people from all walks of life to challenge the old ideology about how we love one another and what their worldview is on how people love each other,” he says. “That in some ways has created more understanding, which is a good thing.”

Smith says he has been “disturbed and disappointed” by some elected officials’ attempts to erase the Latinx and LGBTQ identities of the victims.

After initially omitting the victims’ identities, Florida Gov. Rick Scott finally said on Wednesday that the shooting was a clear attack on the gay and Hispanic community.

“He seems to refuse to say who the victims were, and this refusal to acknowledge that this is a horrific act of terror not just against all humans, but against LGBTQ people in general, is a real insult,” Smith says. “It’s an attempt to erase and ignore the hate that created this massacre.”

At a student vigil for the victims last week at the University of Central Florida, drag performer Adrian Padrón, who goes by Mr Ms Adrien, says he works at Pulse but wasn’t there the night of the shooting. His friends were closing up for the night around 2 a.m. Sunday and were able to escape.

“That’s my family,” he says. “Latin Night was the most family night because people would bring their moms, and their sisters, and their cousins. That man tried to hurt gay Latino people, but he hurt all of us.

Pulse was a home, not a war zone.”

At the same vigil, Paulina HelmHernández, a queer Chicana who co-directs the organization Southerners on New Ground in Georgia, says Orlando’s mass shooting felt like the fruition of the targets placed on immigrant, Latino and LGBT communities this past year.

“To take the sanctity away from that space robs us of our safety and of the possibility we could come together,” she says. “To come into the heart and kinship of our love for each other and to make that the one thing we’re now afraid of, to me just forti-

fies all the homophobia Trump has been talking about, that Gov. Scott and Marco Rubio have been talking about. They could have just as easily marked the trajectory for all those bullets; the only difference was that the shooter pulled the trigger.”

Helm-Hernández says the tragedy proves just getting marriage equality is not enough for the LGBT community.

“We should have been fighting state violence, police violence and racism as well,” she says. “I’m not saying it’s an either-or, but if marriage equality was supposed to be the revolutionary win that everybody said it was, if same-sex marriage was supposed to be the one thing that kept us safe, that assimilated us into being just like straight people, this wouldn’t have happened.”

Speaking at a vigil at Valencia College last week, Chris Cuevas told the crowd that communities of color and the few spaces they have to heal and love are under attack.

“Outside, there exists a world that politicizes every aspect of our identities,” he says. “There are debates over the rights of trans people to use public restrooms; a political candidate that has built a platform on xenophobic and racist rhetoric; a colony that many in my community have called home seen drowning in debt, suffering with no way of protecting itself; and an inordinate amount of legislation targeting us, our choices and our rights still pending in various states.”

After the vigil, Liz Jusino and her partner Marilyn Acosta say they met as young girls in New York because their fathers grew up together in Puerto Rico.

“It’s a Catch-22,” Jusino says about living in the intersection of the Latinx and LGBTQ world. “The love that’s in the Latino community, you feel from your family, from everyone, but there’s a need to still be closeted.

As long as you don’t say it out loud, you can be who you are. When I came out to my mom, she told me, ‘I love you because you’re my daughter. I just can’t accept your lifestyle.’ I told her, ‘As long as I’m a good daughter to you, I think it’s going to be OK.’” After the vigil, Destiny Santana says that despite her mom being in a 15-year lesbian relationship, she didn’t want her own daughter to express her love for women.

descent says. “But she understands you can’t choose it. My mom and her girlfriend would hold hands walking down the street and they would get looks of disgust. It breaks your heart.

In this day and age, it shouldn’t be happening.”

The first and last time she went to Pulse was on Latin Night. Santana, who lived in New York during 9/11, says the tragedy in Orlando feels like that all over again.

“It could have very easily been me,” she says with tears in her eyes.

here’s also another community struggling with the massacre at Pulse nightclub – queer Muslims.

The shooter was an American Muslim who pledged allegiance to ISIS during the attack and whose father said he attacked Pulse because he saw two men kissing, though later reports claim he visited gay nightclubs and talked to men on gay dating apps.

In The Islamic Monthly, Hina Tai writes that we are all to blame for the horrifying event in Orlando, including politicians who use the event to further their narrative, “America’s historic oppression of LGBTQ people” and Muslims who humiliate other queer Muslims.

“Blame is on us who shamed LGBTQ Muslims and made them unwelcome in their own mosques and communities rather than promoting inclusivity,” she writes.

“Blame is on us Muslims who felt the need to stress the 50 murdered individuals were also human beings, because being LGBTQ means questioning their self-worth and dignity.

Blame is also on us who while condemning the violence purposefully erased the identities of LGBTQ from their statements.

“Blame is on Muslim leaders who are scurrying to distance themselves from ISIS, yet fail to address the growth of intolerance and unhealthy conservatism in our communities.”

Jordyn Victoria Laos, who is half-Dominican and identifies as transsexual, says the hatred for LGBTQ people comes from the haters’ own insecurities, which she suspects was the case with the gunman.

“It’s like in the movie, when Yolanda [Saldívar] kills Selena [Quintanilla] out of her own jealousy,” she says. “I believe his hate came from jealousy that we were living our truth. His family made him feel this way, and when you think about it, that’s really, really sad, but it doesn’t take away from what he did.”

And while it may not be the same level of hatred the gunman displayed, Ríos says people should stop accepting homophobia from their families and friends. While her mom has accepted her, her father and grandmother still say her girlfriend is her amiga, which means friend, instead of her novia, though Ríos says she doesn’t mind as long as they recognize her partner.

“I think this is eye-opening to Latino families,” she says. “Sometimes, they’re so quick to judge their children and there’s less acceptance in cultures where there’s a lot of machismo. But I think you need to love your children, because you could lose them. Maybe they are too afraid to tell you what their lifestyle is about, and then one night, they go out and you never see them again.”

On June 11, I left Orlando for a right-wing rhetoric, be it from ISIS or the and comforting stability for locals after seven-night Disney cruise with my family. On June 18, I returned to an entirely different universe, one that superficially looked like the home I’d left behind, but was actually from a far sadder, scarier alternate dimension. When singer Christina Grimmie was gunned down in a murder-suicide on the eve of my departure mere blocks from my house, I naively assumed that was the worst thing that could happen at home that week. Then I awoke on Sunday in the middle of the Western Caribbean to the BBC News (one of the few Mickey-free stations Disney’s ship staterooms receive) and learned an entirely new definition of “worst week ever.”

As grateful I was to be safe and with my family, I felt equally impotent being isolated by the ocean from my friends and neighbors dealing with the fallout from the Pulse nightclub attack. I wrestled with the ship’s sluggish internet (at $90 a gigabyte) in a frustrating effort to stay informed and grieve vicariously via social media, while my inner journalist ached at being unable to help my colleagues cover what could be the biggest story of their careers. Ultimately, I ended up stuck in a surreal seaborne limbo, unable to separate from what was happening at home, yet disconnected from those experiencing it in person.

As a theater critic and founding producer of Orlando’s long-running Rocky Horror Picture Show troupe, I’ve spent more time than the average white hetero cis male inside gay clubs and wearing fishnets, but I can’t claim to comprehend the pain and fear felt by my GLBTQ and Latino neighbors.

And though I have personal opinions, I’m not the person to pontificate on politics, gun control and the bitter fruits of hateful

Westboro Baptist Church. But one aspect of this tragedy I do feel expert enough to add my two cents on is the theme parks, and the role they can play in helping our extended Orlando family recover.

I particularly applaud the powers that be at Universal Orlando and Comcast for their response to the murder of team member Luis Vielma, who was memorialized by author J.K. Rowling in a tearful tweet: They closed the Harry Potter area where he worked so co-workers could mourn and put together an employee-only memorial that was streamed to Universal’s resorts worldwide.

Disney, like Universal, donated $1 million to Mayor Dyer’s OneOrlando fund, but Mickey’s reaction was more of a mixed bag. Inside the Disney boat’s pixie-dusted bubble, there was nary an official acknowledgment of the atrocity, which was probably preferred by the majority of guests but agonizing for the large percentage of staff and guests who were from Central Florida.

Disney’s social media cluelessly chirped amid the chaos, and even Tuesday’s deadly gator attack couldn’t draw Iger home from Shanghai Disneyland’s debut.

Snarky and cynical as I can sound sometimes, I firmly believe Orlando’s theme parks are much more than just mercenary Machiavellian mousetraps, or even tacky time-wasters that we accept as necessary evils that economically underwrite our area’s artists. Rather, theme parks are one of the few uniquely American art forms that is intimately associated worldwide with a particular U.S. city, alongside Hollywood films, Manhattan musicals and Detroit automobiles. Since I’ve lived here, our parks have provided cathartic escapism for guests

hurricanes and terrorist attacks, and they have played a part in the globally admired strength the city now displays in defiance of hatred.

That’s why once I finally came ashore on the seventh day A.P. (After Pulse), almost my first stop was the theme parks, first to ride Islands of Adventure’s in-rehearsal Skull Island: Reign of Kong (more on the monkey soon), and then to join more than 1,000 others at an after-hours vigil in the Magic Kingdom. Disney managers assisted the unofficial Facebook-organized memorial by silencing the omnipresent background music after the nightly “Kiss Goodnight” farewell at Cinderella Castle, creating the eeriest moment of silence I’ve ever experienced in the park, and passed out free rainbow and heart pins.

Finally, being among the 55,000 who gathered at Lake Eola on Sunday night was a beautiful, inspiring experience, but so was sharing Epcot earlier in the day with approximately the same number of people, as I enjoyed my first flight on Soarin’ Around the World. Everything you adored about the original Soarin’ – gentle thrills, gorgeous vistas, Jerry Goldsmith’s theme, even Patrick Warburton – has been retained and refined. And everything you despised – California-centric geography, jarring transitions, glacial standby waits – has been remedied, thanks to globetrotting laser IMAX projections and 50 percent additional capacity. I miss the fake orange scent (though eau de Africa is growing on me) and could do with fewer CGI animals, but when you’re gliding a mile high you can’t glimpse any grief below. Late-night dining at Morimoto Asia is getting a revamp. The restaurant’s Forbidden Lounge will serve a new menu in the coming weeks for night owls at Disney Springs.

Winter Springs’ DeVine Wine & Grill hosts a farmers market outside the restaurant on June 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The three farms participating are Sundew Gardens, ecoUrban Farms and Maya Papaya Organic Community Farm.

Former proprietors Paul and Jennie Lynn Skingley of the much-missed Best of British Pub have started the pop-up Viceroy Chipshops Curry Club specializing in, yes, curry. The group gathers regularly in three venues around town: El Patron in Lake Buena Vista, St. Andrew’s Tavern in Altamonte Springs and the Harp & Celt downtown. Check them out on Facebook.

Pep talk The chill filler between RusTeak and Outpost is an ideal conversation starter

T

he trio of eateries ensconced at the crossroads of Edgewater Drive and Winter Park Street all present casual dining options for the College Park restaurant-goer, but one – the Peppy Bistro – lays claim to serving the once-maligned “fusion” cuisine. Well, for better or worse, it doesn’t. Chef-owner Jerry Peppy’s bistro is more a study in international cuisine than anything seeping into the realm of fusion.

Peppy took over the former Paxia space in November of last year with the intent of retaining some of the restaurant’s Mexican favorites, but what he ultimately did was tie a tourniquet around the arm of its bill of fare and inject it with a heavy dose of Italian and Spanish savor. For the Peppy patron, the rush … well, there isn’t really a rush, but if you’ve sat by your phonograph and listened to Nat King Cole on Christmas

Eve, then you know what I’m getting at. So, yeah, mellow trip.

In fact, the spirited atmosphere of bookend neighbors RusTeak and Outpost isn’t really present here at all (an irony not lost on me in a bistro named “Peppy”), though it has come to reluctantly embrace its role as the chill filler in this restaurant sandwich. We’ve enjoyed south-of-the-border vestiges like guacamole ($8) and steak fajitas ($16) in near silence on some nights, and picked around a salad of bland grilled octopus and far-better shrimp ($17) amidst the clatter and din only a roomful of 10 people can make. When Jerry pops by our table to talk about the “Peppy Meatball” ($11), heads turn to see what all the racket is about.

The sheer enormity of the beefy globe is cause enough for conversation, in which Jerry (a delightful chap, I should add) dutifully obliged us. The meatball, a mix of ground beef and short rib, is plopped atop a marinara neither too sweet nor too tart, and

is crowned with an amorphous toupée of ricotta reminiscent of Brother Theodore’s coif.

Now, I’ve enjoyed scooping up paella using a mussel shell, but in the case of the paella de Peppy ($25) – “our best seller,” the server cooed – I didn’t think my first bite would be of a mussel shell. A broken shell, to be specific, mixed into the ricey wave of shrimp, clams, octopus, andouille sausage and scallops. It wasn’t the only broken shell in the mix, either, which pretty much ruined the paella for me – that, and an underlying bitterness.

The “steak of the week” ($30) featured three chops of Australian lamb and twice the number of asparagus spears over couscous to, the menu stated, “keep the excitement going.” My enthusiasm was curbed on seeing the Zen rock-garden aesthetic of the plating, but the lamb was lamby and of sacrificial worth.

College Park imbibers have raved about Peppy Bistro’s happy hour, as they did about Paxia’s before. Alas, I haven’t had the pleasure, though I can’t say we were all too piqued after a sip of the pisco sourinspired “Judgement Day.” Price: $12, but hearing your wife humming the tune of a ’50s crooner while contentedly devouring a $6.50 slab of chocolate torte? Priceless.

Many chefs have spoken out in the wake of the attack on Pulse Nightclub, but a recent conversation with Norman Van Aken yielded these poignant, and resonating, words: “Politicians who refuse to act in the positive affirmation of humanity need to be voted out of office.

All they’ll lose is their jobs. The lives lost last week (and before, and before, and before) are forever, and the families with broken hearts will bear the pain for all of their days. There is no Founding Father that wanted such an America.”

OPENINGS Valkyrie Doughnuts, the doughnut-only offshoot of Valhalla Bakery, will open in the former Qarma Crepes location near UCF. Owner Celine Duvoisin hopes to open “within three months.” And yes, Valhalla Bakery will continue to operate out of Market on South … Orlando Meats update: According to owner Edgar Massoni, the café portion of the specialty meat shop is a go. n the days after the mass shooting at Pulse Nightclub, volunteers threw themselves into helping the victims’ families and friends however possible. And Orlando’s restaurants, caterers and food producers were there to help those giving blood, carrying cases of donations or waiting for information at assistance centers.

The Downtown YMCA became a staging area for drop-off and delivery of meals donated by several local catering companies. Tijuana Flats offered free meals to nurses, doctors, EMTs and police officers that Sunday and Monday. Domino’s and Papa John’s sent pizzas to the GLBT Community Center. Farm-Haus donated their meal deliveries on Monday, June 13, to first responders, families of the victims and hospital staff at ORMC. At the Daily City Food Truck Bazaar in Sanford on Saturday, June 18, several of the trucks donated percentages (or all) of their profits to victims funds, and several have pledged to donate some or all of their proceeds throughout June.

Finally, the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association has organized Dine Out for Orlando United, a statewide event scheduled for Thursday, June 30. On that

n 1982, three friends in Mississippi – Eric Zala, Chris Strompolos and Jayson Lamb – set out to make a shot-for-shot remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark. You know, just for fun. They were 11 years old, and it took them seven years before they were done with the project … although they were never able to fully finish; they were missing one key scene.

I won’t tell you which scene that is, because you can see them go through the adventure and the torment of finally shooting it as adults in the thoroughly hilarious and surprisingly poignant Raiders! The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made.

Documentarians Jeremy Coon and Tim Skousen revisit the odyssey that consumed the entire teenage years of Zala, who played Indy; Strompolos, who directed the film and played tons of smaller parts; and Lamb, who was all about cameras and FX. The result is a portrait of fandom and friendship, of amazing creativity and inventiveness, as three imaginative nerdy kids and a whole bunch of their friends dedicated themselves to a remarkably devout expression of love for their favorite movie. We get clips from their work as well as behind-the-scenes footage of it all going wrong (which happened often).

But Raiders is also a portrait of childhood in the ’80s, of broken families that left kids

emotionally adrift – and eager to latch onto a father figure such as Indiana Jones, if only from afar – and of the era before helicopter parents, when as long as there was no arterial blood or broken limbs and you were home before dark, we kids were left to our own devices. (The guys liken themselves to the Goonies. Zala’s and Strompolos’ moms appear on camera today to marvel at what their sons were getting up to – like setting fire to themselves – while they were busy working to support their families.)

The guys’ Kickstarter-supported quest to finally get that last scene in the can is beset by the same kind of problems that even bigbudget movie shoots face: bad weather, FX breakdowns, budget overruns of both time and money and the frustration that goes along with all of those. Yet there remains a childlike enthusiasm and a certain artistic purity – the guys’ work is about absolutely nothing but the sheer joy of cinema – that brings to mind fictional movies such as Be Kind Rewind, with its “sweded” remakes of Hollywood films, and Son of Rambow, about kids who make their own version of First Blood.

I have no doubt that both of those films were inspired by Zala, Strompolos and Lamb’s Raiders, which was already something of a legend by the time Harry Knowles played part of it at his 2002 Butt-NumbA-Thon film festival. Anyone who loves movies with a passion is sure to see something of themselves in the reverent worship of cinema that the homemade Raiders represents, and in awe of those who would dare to attempt such a thing. film@orlandoweekly.com

the release of a picture as innocuous as Zoolander was considered risky in the aftermath of a life-changing event like 9/11, we’re now left to wonder what, if any, filmic entertainment is appropriate post-Pulse. I tend to give the benefit of the doubt to Free State of Jones: Though it hardly sounds like a laugh riot, I can see audiences with stronger constitutions responding to a history lesson about American resistance to American divisiveness.

Matthew McConaughey plays a Mississippi farmer who declares himself independent of the Confederacy and sets up his own territory based on less bigoted principles.

At any other time, I would snark that the movie seems Oscar-bound, since it has plenty of white contributors to honor and plenty of black ones to ignore. But right now, I’d rather focus on other details, like the fact that McConaughey’s Newt Knight eventually married a former slave and founded a groundbreaking mixedrace community. This seems like a good time to be reminded that love is love is love is love is fuck you. (R)

Independence Day: Resurgence Here’s where we get into trouble. It took Hollywood 20 years to mount a sequel to the sci-fi resistance opera Independence Day – just in time for us all to be reminded that the greatest threat to our way of life comes from within. Director Roland Emmerich was on Colbert last week talking up

The Neon Demon Nicolas Winding Refn of Drive directed this satirical shocker about Hollywood fashion models whose mutual jealousy extends all the way to literal cannibalism. Purportedly includes a scene of one such model masturbating with a corpse in a funeral home.

On second thought, maybe that Independence Day picture isn’t such a bad idea for Orlando right now. (R)

The Shallows Since 1975, every studio that has opened a movie in the summertime has hoped it would become Jaws for a new generation. But few of them have had the balls to actually use the tagline “It’s Jaws for a new generation.” Very little gray area there, except for the hide of the shark in question. Blake Lively is the bikiniclad heroine fighting for her life against a vicious maneater that wants her dead. See, I knew Scarlett Johansson would seek her revenge sooner or later. (PG-13)

his summer is seeing a touring reunion of sorts, as Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas co-headline the “Honda Civic Tour – Future Now” outing. The two artists are close friends and recently joined together to launch their own label, Safehouse Records – building on a friendship that began when they were both starring in Disney movies and sharing the stage on a tour headlined by Jonas’ former group, the Jonas Brothers. This time out, though, fans will see the two former Disney stars at a strikingly different point in their careers and their lives than in 2010, when they first toured together.

For Jonas, he is stepping out solo after a hugely successful stint with his brothers Joe and Kevin in the Jonas Brothers that included two double-platinum albums and a gold album and acting roles in a pair of Camp Rock movies (which also featured Lovato) and their own show, JONAS).

After the Jonas Brothers’ split, he went solo, releasing a self-titled debut album in 2014 (which went top 10 on Billboard magazine’s album chart) and on June 10, his second solo effort, Last Year Was Complicated.

Jonas, in an early June interview, said he’s had his struggles in moving beyond his teen pop past, but thinks fans are beginning to see him as a full-fledged adult artist.

“It was challenging at the beginning, for me at least, and still is, to a certain degree,” Jonas says of his move from teen idol to adult music artist. “I think that there was an association with people’s first introduction to me as opposed to them taking the music and my image for what it is now, in its current representation. So it took some time.”

Lovato, meanwhile, almost crashed before she got beyond her initial breakthrough into teen pop stardom. In October 2010, after she had released two successful solo albums and begun starring in the Disney series Sonny With a Chance, Lovato suffered a meltdown while on tour with, ironically enough, the Jonas

Brothers, punching one of the backup dancers. The incident sent Lovato, then 18, into rehab. She soon went public to explain she had been suffering from a long-running eating disorder and had been cutting herself. She also had developed a serious cocaine habit.

Lovato emerged from this dark period determined to stay clean and healthy, and has shared her stories of her battles with body image, bingeing and purging and self-abuse to try to help other women who are battling those issues.

Some of those encouraging messages of self-worth and confidence have filtered into her music, particularly on her two most recent albums, Demi (2013) and Confident (2015), both of which made top five debuts on the Billboard album chart.

Those albums appear to have left any lingering image of Lovato as a child star in the dust.

“For me, the transition was a little bit easier [than that of Nick Jonas] because I didn’t have to do anything to break out of the Disney mold,” Lovato says. “It’s a lot easier when you just go to rehab. So, I kind of grew up really fast in the public eye in that way. And so when it was time to release my music, I think people looked at me differently. I wanted to prove to people that I wasn’t just a stereotypical Hollywood starlet that goes to rehab and falls back into the trap of the things that got her there.”

While not wanting to reveal too many details about their performances, Lovato and Jonas say the emphasis will be on the music as opposed to visual flash. Both artists hint that there will be an intermingling of performances, although not quite in the way Jay Z and Justin Timberlake switched off on songs touring together in 2013.

“I actually got the chance to see that concert, the Justin and Jay Z concert, and I thought it was really awesome how they kind of came in and out of each other’s sets,” Lovato says. “So I think we’re going to do something similar to that.” music@orlandoweekly.com

Last Thursday (June 16) was my

first night out since the Pulse massacre.

I hadn’t even attended any of the public vigils. Although I was incredibly lifted by all the rallying images I was seeing online, I just wasn’t ready. I needed the womb of my own space and family to grieve and process.

But the beat eventually goes on, as it should, as it must. So I dove deep into the very marrow of the music scene: the DIY community. Appropriately, it was a night of fellowship and catharsis. Hugs were deeper and more generous. The vibe and sheer physical energy was, in those close quarters, unavoidable. And it forced me out of myself. Yeah, just what the doctor ordered.

Chew were headlining. Though they’re a Chicago punk band, three-quarters of them are homegrown from notable Orlando bands like Great Deceivers and Hau Zarest. With cred like that, their reception was a buzz-hot sardine-can situation. After seeing Chew’s feral power live, their full-bore hardcore would’ve likely lit it up even without the built-in support. But to prime the performance, bassist Russell Harrison made an introduction that proudly asserted their local roots and impelled us to heal by being exactly who we are: people who love and make art. On that note, under all that accumulated emotional tinder, the packed house combusted as soon as the band struck. The entire room erupted into a pit, one with a little more exuberance and force than perhaps in other, more normal times.

West Palm Beach’s Problem Child have been on my radar hard and were the one band I hated missing most at the recent Period Bomb show (Uncle Lou’s).

I wasn’t going to miss them again this time.

Now, after seeing them live, I can say that neither should you next time they’re back in town. They rip crazed hardcore punk with a savage noise-rock undertow that’s in a constant dive of frenzy. Live, that careening sensation is embodied in a total animal of a frontman who throws himself around with little regard for limb, thrashing on the edge and willing to drag any takers over it with him.

Considering that most touring musicians are chronically broke, it’s a gracious gesture. And considering the crowded house, it was also a helpful one. So serious Orlando respect for that.

Giving the most apropos performance was New York’s PWR BTTM, as in “power bottom,” a name as empowered as it is gay. Even though I relished the powerful coincidence, I wasn’t planning on making too big of a deal about an especially unambiguous queercore band arriving last week of all weeks. But then I saw the signs on the bathroom doors stating that both were gender-neutral per artist request.

And then I watched a queer two-piece rock band who are as out as it gets command the club.

Guitarist Ben Hopkins came out full queen with rainbow wings, dress and glitter face. Then he and drummer Liv Bruce kicked out catchy garage-rock songs that frequently went total Guitar Hero. PWR BTTM may be sweet, playful and honest, but they also rock hard with major shredding glory. And, as the bathroom signs attest, their shows are designated safe spaces. So, yes, perfect.

I’m also going to mention that I drove past the memorial site on the Dr. Phillips Center plaza on my way to the show. It was well-populated with people who looked like their Friday night plans were right there on that lawn – in communion with the souls there and departed – rather than inside for a performance or a block north in the city’s most concentrated nightlife sector. And people were still there when I passed on my way home.

What’s more, my entire downtown drive was flourished practically nonstop with rainbow colors, from the flags flying everywhere to the full-building lighting of the Aloft hotel. This is my Orlando. baolehuu@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

Kate DiCamillo LITERARY

Kate DiCamillo, the author of celebrated children’s novels Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tiger Rising, The Tale of Desperaux and more, is no stranger to writing from a personal place. Her new book, Raymie Nightingale, is one of her most autobiographical to date.

Like many of DiCamillo’s novels, Raymie Nightingale draws from her own personal experiences to create something relatable and new. With this novel, DiCamillo comes home – much like Raymie Clark living in Central Florida, DiCamillo hails from Clermont, and has a father who left her at a young age. “Setting the book in Central Florida wasn’t so much a conscious decision as something that happened naturally,” DiCamillo says. “My father left when I was young, and all my books have autobiographical elements, they all have missing parents. It was much more of an emotional decision.” DiCamillo stops by the downtown library to read from Raymie Nightingale, sign copies and take questions from the audience. “It’s been very rewarding, seeing how people have embraced and connected to this book,” DiCamillo says. “I’ve had people on this tour coming up to me telling me their own personal stories about these matters. I was introduced to Baby Anne’s music as an opening DJ at one of her early Savannah, Georgia, shows. I didn’t know the first thing about running the decks, but I did fit the dELiA*s catalog cut-out look of a raver girl, complete with Björk buns and UFO cargo pants. I quickly got schooled when she commanded the floor by opening her set with “She Said.” Baby Anne, a fixture of the Southern dance scene in the late ’90s, was a different kind of performer, DJ and producer. At a time when Britney Spears was a subversive pop icon, Baby Anne was a real counter-culture superstar. Her music, heavily drawn from Miami bass, spanned classifications from drum and bass to dubstep, but has always been breakbeat at its core. After more than two decades performing in clubs and at festivals, Baby Anne will complete her farewell tour this weekend at the Social. Legends! Though founding member Juan Formell passed away in 2014, his ensemble Los Van Van (“The Go Gos”) continues touring and making music, in honor of Formell’s singular musical vision and in service to the unmistakable rhythms of Cuban music.

Los Van Van, with Formell at the helm, formed in 1969 with the goal of hybridizing traditional Cuban music with then-current rock and pop influences, a style they dubbed “songo.” Los Van Van has consistently evolved their sound over the years, seamlessly absorbing contemporary influences into an already heady mix. (They were early adopters of synthesizers in Cuba, too.) For several decades now, they have been hard-touring ambassadors of Cuban music, including at a show in Miami in 1999 where thousands of Cuban exiles surrounded the arena in protest, while riot police protected concertgoers. Watching footage from this show, we get teary every time: The atmosphere was so charged and the music was just so fucking alive. The only shouts at Los Van Van nowadays are fervent cheers, though. Step out for the evening and dance already. – Matthew Moyer

In many parts of the country, people find this to be a cause for celebration, but here in Florida, we simply follow a primal instinct to get as close to the nearest body of water as possible, just in case it dries up. The well-trained bartenders of Will’s Pub and Lil Indies are no exception, and they prove it this weekend with two lakeside parties to kick off what will hopefully become a series of off-site events. On Saturday night, grab your best cocktail attire (for us, this means the pants without stains) and enjoy a 1950s-themed party at a beautiful midcentury mansion on the shores of Lake Holden. Swine & Sons Provisions caters the hors d’oeuvres while Johnny Dee & the Starlights play the best in pre-British Invasion rock & roll and the bartenders serve up special period-specific cocktails. If you lack unblemished garments, however, the tiki party the next afternoon at the same location might be more your speed. Day-drinking jams are provided by the Sh-Booms, the Wildtones and the Uke-A-Ladies, while Da Kine Poke Truck and Lil Indies serve up island-themed delights perfect for those of us who have enough flipflops to designate a particular pair as the “fancy ones.” – Thaddeus McCollum

In a year rife with loss, the Orlando comedy scene is about to experience another one. Larry Fulford, who has been practicing standup since before there was such a thing as an Orlando comedy scene, has been seduced by the warm, balmy weather of Chicago and is leaving for the tropical shores of Lake Michigan. Whether you know Fulford as a comic, the Will’s Pub door guy or as the sometime drummer for acts like Matt Woods and Big Shoals, his departure leaves a pretty big hole on multiple fronts. So for his last show in town (until he gets sick of the Second City’s famous piña coladas and sunshine and returns home for a visit), Shady Brunch is letting him close out with a farewell solo set followed by the hit Life’s a Gift extravaganza with local comedy giant Alex Luchun. There will be laughs and there will be tears, but there will also be prizes – mostly because Fulford can’t fit all of his stuff into a U-Haul. Good luck, Larry. Don’t forget to take a jacket. – TM

My name is Peter and I’m a longtime fan. I’ve also been very involved with the Human Rights Campaign and their work in getting the Equality Act passed. I’m 21 and only recently out of the closet. I opened up about my sexuality after the passage of marriage equality last June and have since been a proud gay man. It seemed that since marriage equality, our community was only going up. Even the passage of HB2 didn’t make me cynical about the future. But this recent shooting has changed my world completely. Fighting for equality in housing, education and employment seems like a joke after this massive act of violence in Orlando.

I’m looking to someone in the community for guidance.

Peter They don’t win – the haters don’t win – when they chase us, beat us, or kill us. They win when we stop fighting.

Please don’t stop fighting.

And please don’t despair. Hundreds of thousands of us died in the 1980s and ’90s when hate, fear, greed, racism and negligence intersected with a deadly virus. A lot of us felt then the way you do now – that it was over, that it was hopeless, that the coming out and the organizing and the fighting had been for nothing, and that everything we had won up to that point was meaningless. And then we got up off our butts and we showed them – we showed those motherfuckers – that the fight in us was greater than the hate in them. We showed them that we were stronger and smarter than they were, we showed that fucking virus that we were stronger and smarter than it was and we made it clear to them that we were not going to shut up and die quietly or go back into the closet and die alone.

And we had only each other for a while there – for a long while. For years we fought alone.

Look at who is on our side today – all good and decent people everywhere. The president of the United States and the next president of the United States. Look at the rallies, look at the vigils, look at the outpouring of love, sympathy and support. Don’t look at the killer. Don’t look at the haters.

Don’t look at the vile comments left by shit people on Twitter and Facebook. Look at the good. Look at the love. Look at the good and loving people inside and outside the LGBT community and take strength from their love and support.

Then get out there and fight.
