You probably didn’t miss the insufferable heat, but here’s what you may have overlooked this week: “No-Show Marco” living up to his nickname, prowlers at Pulse and a rural/urban showdown east of the Econ. ➦

Where you at, Marco? Last week, protesters staged a sit-in at U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio’s Orlando office and demanded legislation for gun control, LGBTQ protections and safer communities of color. The group planned to sit for 49 hours, but by the end of Monday, Orlando Police arrested 10 of the peaceful protesters because Rubio’s public office is in a private building. The Republican senator’s office released a statement saying he respects the views of others, welcomes the input and all that jazz, but on social media, Rubio has kept pretty mum about the whole situation, which is interesting because he used the Orlando tragedy as the reason to break his promise not to run for reelection. If the Pulse massacre inspired another six-year term in the Senate, it seems Rubio would keep us at the forefront of his thoughts and prayers.

No respect: After law enforcement officials turned over the gay nightclub Pulse back to its owners, a break-in and a trespassing incident were reported to Orlando Police. In the break-in, the suspects pried plywood off of doors and entered the murder scene where 49 people were killed and 53 wounded a month ago. “Since June 12, we have seen the worst and best of human behavior,” said club owner Barbara Poma. “We are disappointed that someone felt compelled to violate the privacy of our beloved Pulse nightclub and the sacred place it has now become.”

Hold the line … or not: Outrage from residents went in one ear and out the other after Orange County commissioners voted 4-3 in favor of developers who want to build more than 4,000 homes close to the ecologically sensitive area near the Econlockhatchee River. The two separate developments are a 1,188-acre property where developer Dwight Saathoff plans to build 2,078 residential units, and a parcel of 1,418 acres closer to the Econ River whose developer plans to build 1,999 residential units, plus a bridge crossing the river. The real vote here, though, wasn’t on the projects — it was on holding the line and keeping the Econ River as a boundary between the rural and urban parts of Orange County. Commissioner Ted Edwards, who represents the area and is up for re-election, apparently thought there wasn’t much rural to save anyway and voted in favor of developers.

No sunshine with Mr. Worldwide: Pitbull dropped his new music video for the quasi-public tourism agency Visit Florida, accurately summarizing the state in the chorus as “Sexy Beaches! Hotels!” The problem is that despite our taxpayer dollars going to Visit Florida, we’ll never know exactly how much we paid Mr. 305 because his contract with the tourism entity is redacted under a “trade secrets” exemption to Florida’s Sunshine laws. Visit Florida has been criticized in the past year for these types of contracts and for the lack of oversight over the agency. mcordeiro@orlandoweekly.com

For Luis Daniel Wilson-León, Florida was the first place he could be himself.

Growing up in a religious household in Ponce, Puerto Rico, the 37-year-old “endured countless days of bullying while growing up, by cruel people calling him all sorts of horrendous homophobic slurs,” says his childhood friend Daniel Gmys-Casiano on Facebook.

“He was the first person on this earth I came out to, and he always protected and loved his

friends,” Gmys-Casiano says. “We were both members of the same church and we both [rebelled] against it, and against the spiritual tyrants that kept condemning us for giving what the world needs the most: love.”

Laly Santiago-León says her cousin “Dani” was an “empathetic, genuine, brilliant” person who was “the light of everybody’s life.” He moved into her parents’ home in Central Florida and learned English in six months.

About eight years ago, he found love at Perfumania when Jean Carlos Méndez Pérez sold him a bottle of perfume, and eventually they moved to Kissimmee. The couple was at Pulse during the attack on June 12 and died together. Although they had a joint wake, Wilson-León’s body was taken to Puerto Rico, while Méndez Pérez was buried in Kissimmee.

“It was love at first sight,” Santiago-León says. “Their dreams were to buy a house, travel the world, just like anyone else.”

In a New York Times video that chronicled Wilson-León’s wake and funeral, his aunt and Santiago’s mother, Noelia León de Santiago, tells her family that her nephew’s favorite phrase was “a profound reflection that to understand, we have to love without thinking about race, religion or sexual preference.”

“You don’t have to understand me, only love me,” she remembers Wilson-León would say.

Pokémon Go captures Orlando’s heart and makes a brutal summer a little sweeter

’m walking through Lake Eola Park this July afternoon, and, like most summer days after 3 p.m., it’s raining.

It’s a slight drizzle, but it’s raining nonetheless. Last year, even a flurry like this would send pedestrians scrambling into the restaurants and bars dotting Central Boulevard. This July’s different. Dozens of teens and young adults stride through the mist, phones out, swiping at their screens.

“Do you know where’s good to eat around here?” a young woman hoisting an umbrella asks. She and her boyfriend, whose eyes are fixed on his Samsung Galaxy, drove here from Kissimmee. They’ve heard that rare Pokémon would be roaming the park tonight. So have I. “Looks like Dragonair’s this way,” the 20-something says, pointing at the Google Maps-like display on his phone. I open the app, and sure enough, that elusive dragon Pokémon is lounging by Lake Eola’s red pagoda. “We’ve gotta go,” he says.

Getting someplace dry, grabbing dinner: Those trifles can wait. It’s summer 2016.

These Pokémon aren’t going to catch themselves.

Pokémon Go, Nintendo and Niantic’s augmented reality mobile game, didn’t “launch” on July 6. It dropped like a surprise Beyoncé album, like a gift from heaven or like gravity. Internet-analysis company SimilarWeb reported that, in two days, Pokémon Go surpassed Tinder in total Android phone downloads and matched Twitter’s daily active user count. The promise of the popular “pocket monsters” appearing in the wild via users’ smartphones to capture and train has turned the internet – and everyday life – upside down.

Go is the latest entry in Nintendo’s portable handheld franchise, which first launched its seminal Red and Blue versions on the handheld Game Boy in 1998. Back then, kids dawdled the days away catching and training 150 creatures, then traded and battled with their friends through the use

of a Game Boy-to-Game Boy cable. Over 20 years, the property has spawned 67 video games, 19 animated films, a trading card game, 19 animated television seasons and countless lunch periods debating the best starter Pokémon (it’s Squirtle).

Pokémon already belonged in the pantheon of prestigious and profitable mega-franchises before Go happened. The Atlantic’s Bourree Lam reports the property’s all-time revenue exceeds $40 billion.

Only the Star Wars franchise has earned more, with its 23-year head start. Then Pokémon Go increased Nintendo’s net worth by $7.5 billion and became iTunes’ most downloaded app in less than a week.

Go developer Niantic sought to push people off their duffs and into their surroundings, and spots like Lake Eola Park are their masterstrokes. Fourteen Pokéstops (landmarks and businesses where players collect free in-game items) and three Pokémon Gyms (where players pit their strongest Pokémon against opponents’)

surround the lake. The Lake Eola fountain itself is a Pokémon Gym, accessible only by rental swan boat. Hundreds of trainers circle that confounding, lovably teal-tinted lake every night, and they’re finding that Go entices more than Ivysaurs and Snorlaxes out of hiding.

“It’s getting people out of their shells,” Rebecca Austin says. “As dumb as it sounds, it’s bringing people together.”

Austin is a server at World of Beer’s downtown location, where I’ve finally sought refuge from the rain. WOB neighbors a Pokéstop maybe 50 feet from Austin’s bar. A passing trainer had deployed a “lure,” attracting wild Pokémon to this location (and Austin’s thirsty trainers) for 30 minutes. Austin jokes that Go’s the best thing to happen to bars and restaurants since team sports. She doesn’t play, but she, like much of my generation, has fond memories of battling and trading the original 150 on her Game Boy Color.

“Whether people are playing or not, it gives people something nice and fun to talk about these days,” Austin says. “You have people our age who grew up with the game, teens who never played the originals, and people in their 40s and 50s who are playing a Pokémon game for the first time.

Everyone has something to say about it.”

General manager Andrew Dawson confirms that he’s seen an uptick in business since Go launched.

“I don’t know what’s next for this or whether its popularity will hold up,” Dawson says, “but if it continues to drive traffic, I’m all for it.”

More than a few faces at WOB’s horseshoe bar bask in a blue-green glow – the telltale sign of Pokémon trainers on the hunt.

“What team are you?” a young guy by the bar asks. He’s referencing the three virtual guilds trainers can join once they reach Level Five.

“Team Instinct,” I answer. “And you?”

“Team Valor,” he responds. “My friend,” he says, nudging the man to his right, “is Team Mystic.” The young man smiles. “So the whole gang’s here,” he says.

You see the City Beautiful, and the trainers who call it home, differently after playing Pokémon Go, through a more intimate, wondrous lens. Last year, the swan boats were just an innocuous swatch of downtown Orlando’s cultural wallpaper.

Now I’m Googling “swan boat rentals” on my lunch break. When someone strikes up conversation at a bar, I don’t fumble for a reply: I ask what they’ve caught today.

Orlandoans needed this game. Given the hellish summer Orlando has endured – a barrage of deranged gunmen locally and public executions by and of policemen nationally – it would be insulting to declare Pokémon Go part of the zeitgeist. But

Niantic’s little phenomenon gives trainers a staycation from a month’s worth of abominable push notifications and Facebook newsfeeds. We couldn’t have asked for a sweeter reprieve, or a better reminder that we share so much in common.

A Pokémon Go event at Cranes Roost Park on Sunday, July 10, attracted more than 1,200 trainers. A Lake Eola Park meet-up scheduled for Saturday, July 30, is expected to draw more than 1,300 people – all to play a far-from-perfect (if not glitch-ridden) mobile game together. Pokémon Go’s Go’s server crashes, battery drain and finicky GPS have become memes in their own right.

Tech bloggers like Adam Reeve have raised ’s protections against concerns about Go’s cybercriminals, branding the mobile game “a huge security risk.” The Buzzfeed News article “You Should Probably Check Your Pokémon Go Privacy Settings” posits that Niantic could read – and write! – Go players’ emails, Google docs and more. And that doesn’t even touch the public safety hazards a game like Go creates.

“I can’t tell you how many people I’ve run into because they’ve stopped in the middle of the sidewalk to catch something,” Austin says.

An overzealous trainer in Auburn, Alabama, slammed his car into a tree while catching and driving, according to USA Today.. Two San Diego hikers went viral when they fell 50 feet off a cliff while playing Pokémon Go. The game’s inherent risks and pitfalls are as exhaustive as a wellstocked Pokédex, but millions of people in our tumultuous world have spoken: We need this simple, saccharine thing for a while.

I leave the bar after hurling Pokéballs at a feisty Pikachu for a few minutes, taking a moment to watch a flock of pedal-powered swans glide toward the fountain. One of them slowly turns in my direction, its occupants obscured by the setting Florida sun, but the swan head-shaped bow locks eyes with me as if to say, “Life’s a gift, love your neighbor, and you’ve gotta catch ’em all.

Never forget that.”

Cultures reader, you’re already aware of my interest in the intersection between interactivity, immersiveness and alternative environments in the arts and entertainment.

So it will come as no surprise to learn that I – like so many others – had to be among the first to experience the highly anticipated new experience that debuted last week. For a change, it led me to turn off the television and get off the couch on Friday evening. Following the map on my iPhone, I found myself drawn to an unfamiliar part of town, where other like-minded people were wandering around outdoors, enjoying the sounds and scents of nature while eagerly awaiting the appearance of fabled creature: a horse with the soul of a mythological god named “Equus.”

Don’t bother searching your Pokédex for this ultra-rare beast. The augmented reality experience I’m referring to doesn’t drain your smartphone’s battery, nor does it suffer from incessant server crashes, though it has been filled to maximum capacity nearly every evening. Most importantly, the figures in this imaginary universe don’t simply appear as crude cartoons on a screen, but are flesh-and-blood actors (emphasis on the flesh) standing close enough for you to see their, uh … Pokéballs. It may not be attracting the worldwide media attention of a certain Nintendo app, but I feel lucky that I was lured to the Acre on Edgewater Drive by producer-director Jeremy Seghers’ intimate staging of Equus.

The award-winning 1973 drama by Peter Shaffer is narrated by Dr. Martin Dysart (John Edward Palmer), an English child psychologist frustrated by the futility of his career and fading marriage. His new patient, Alan Strang (Michael Thibodeau) is a shy, sensitive teen who has savagely blinded a dozen horses at the stables where he worked. Strang’s strident socialist father, Frank (Jason Blackwater), doting but dog-

Michael Thibodeau as Alan Strang in Equus matic mother, Dora (Olivia Demarco), and gruff ex-employer Dalton (John Moughan) each offer their own explanations, as does Dysart’s clench-jawed jurist confidante, Hesther (Jenny Ornstein). But it’s only by coaxing Strang into reliving his fateful date with comely co-worker Jill (Fabiola Rivera) that Dysart can uncover the unconventional bond between Alan and a horse named Nugget (Jack Kelly) that motivated his unspeakable act.

With its unblinking exploration of the perils of adolescent psychiatry and the slippery definition of normality, Equus has much in common with A Clockwork Orange, which Seghers presented earlier this year in a similarly immersive, atypical venue on I-Drive. “I think I’m working through some stuff,” Seghers joked to me after the performance, before explaining that Equus “was a play that I wanted to do for a while, and then I learned of the venue.” He discovered the Acre, a rustic compound of tropical gardens and tin-roof sheds which is typically rented for wedding receptions, through actor-director Scott Browning, whose Howler’s Theatre mounted The Tempest there in 2014.

Seghers picked the complex’s smaller barn-like structure for a theater to “make the cramped feeling a part of the experience” and set the action inside Alan’s equine-obsessed psyche. The result is an organic sensory experience that starts as soon as you step inside and take a deep breath. “It’s got a smell that comes with the hay and the burlap sacks,” Seghers admits, and it’s augmented by the anemic air-conditioning. Seghers makes smart use of the confined quarters, creating dramatic tension by blocking actors to hurl dialogue over

the audiences’ heads (inspired, he told me, by the fort bombardment scene in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean ride).

A caution to claustrophobes; with the stage only inches from the front row, this show is a physically and emotionally stressful experience, especially if you are big on personal space. But for me, any discomfort was worth enduring, largely thanks to Thibodeau’s raw portrayal of Alan. Thibodeau, a regular on the Orlando Repertory stage and a featured performer in Universal’s Bill & Ted Halloween show, makes a successful move from teen thespian to adult actor with this role, much as Daniel Radcliffe did in the 2009 Broadway revival.

His haunted eyes and awkward affect initially recall serial shooters like Dylan Roof, but Thibodeau gradually peels back Strang’s mask to reveal the pitiable person within.

Thibodeau’s soul- and skin-baring performance is surrounded by a solid if somewhat uneven supporting cast, with the occasional inconsistent accent or flat delivery slightly distracting from an otherwise polished production. I found Palmer’s Dysart overly mannered and remote for much of the play, but he valiantly fought through florid monologues dense with Hellenic allusions to successfully connect emotionally by the ending. And while seamless scene transitions contributed to a generally peppy pace, momentum unfortunately flagged in both acts’ ecstatic finales just as it should have accelerated. Forgivable flaws aside, Equus was well worth seeking out the Acre for, and left me excited for Seghers’ next project: a staging of Dracula set inside a taxidermy store-slash-fetish club on OBT. T

he thing with bao, those spongy alabaster buns of Taiwanese origin, is that, like Ethiopian injera, the bread seems to rapidly expand in your stomach – so the sensation of being full hits soon after ingesting just one. But like a Lay’s potato chip, you can’t eat just one, so I make a conscious choice to be especially famished prior to any visit to King Bao. I’m usually spellbound in a mental fug of steam and saucy meats as I do the zombie walk into the Mills Avenue eatery, but the stark decor never fails to snap me out of it. Many are seated on white stools; others crouch over tables in the posture of the ravenous, but my procedure is to order (preferably beforehand) and enjoy these splendid (and splendidly priced) hot pockets of wondrous bread in the comfort of my home, a mere eight minutes away (lucky me).

When I pop open the Styrofoam container of my three-bao combo ($9), I can’t help but think of the threat these scrumptious buggers pose to the almighty taco and burg-

er. Bao are a small, yet persuasive, segment of the revolution and evolution forging a pluralistic culinary landscape across midsized towns in America, and they’re here to stay. David Chang and Eddie Huang boosted their popularity in New York years ago and now, they’re Orlando’s latest food darlings.

Texturally speaking, fluffy, doughy bao are hard to beat when stuffed with crispy, fatty, meaty and crunchy edibles. At first, the kimchi fried chicken ($3.50) appeared too corpulent to be contained by the bao’s feeble grasp, but then it was gone – cucumbers, scallions and all – in three bites, save for a dab of sriracha aioli splattered on my upper lip. A bao of marinated Korean short rib ($3.50) was a personal favorite, thanks to an Asian pear salsa and bracing cilantro (and speaking of zombie walks, it’s named after Glenn Rhee, the Korean Walking Dead character). Had the grouper ($3.50) been heavier on the flesh and lighter on the tempura batter, it too would’ve occupied a special place in my mind’s bao vault.

And what of the bao that started it all, gua bao? It’s called “Hogzilla” ($3.50) here, but the requisite succulence of braised pork

belly is nevertheless present in all its fatty glory. Ground honey-roasted peanuts add a bit of sweetness (and crunch) along with pickled carrots and daikon. I was leery of the “Mr. Potato Head” ($3) partly because A) I never cared for the toy of the same name and B) I thought a sweet potato croquette with roasted corn, sour cream and a sesame relish would veer toward cloying.

Turns out it is sweet, but pleasantly so, and besides, it really paired well with the fire tots ($2.50).

That’s right, if you want a little side bang for your bao, tater tots (talk about culinary pluralism) are your only choice, and these puppies come tossed in togarashi, chives, jalapeños and a drizzle of sriracha aioli.

Truffle tots ($3) might lend a fancy air, but the fact is, any meal you have at King Bao will be of the cheap-ass variety, and that goes for desserts ($2) as well: fried bao gorged with ice cream, ground peanuts and caramel sauce, or with Nutella, bananas and powdered sugar.

A factor in their affordability here is the unfortunate fact that the Asian sugar dough buns are, unfortunately, not made inhouse. Nope, King Bao goes the route of the convenience-minded pauper and purchases packaged frozen buns, which are then heated on the premises. Needless to say, they’re never quite as satisfying as freshly made, but that’s the way at King Bao. Yeah, I’m getting steamed just thinking about it.

A pedestrian tilapia ceviche hardly qualifies as “Mexican soul food” and neither does an oversalted burger fashioned from beef and chorizo. The chunky guac might please, so long as fresh tomatoes are used, but one thing is certain – your tacos will quickly disintegrate into a fattoush of mush. hanks to syndication on Comedy Central in the mid-’90s, Absolutely Fabulous developed nearly as much of a fan base on this side of the pond as in its home in the U.K. The series follows the misadventures of the boozy, druggy, self-centered Edina (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley), two women working in the world of public relations and fashion. As reprehensible as the characters can be, AbFab turned into one of the most beloved touchstones of British comedy in the ’90s, returning for revival seasons periodically throughout the 2000s.

A well-received 20th-anniversary season in 2012, coinciding with the London Olympics, set the ball rolling for a feature film. And now that it’s here, it won’t disappoint fans of the show.

Edina and Patsy haven’t matured over

the past 24 years – nor should they have, as that’s a large part of their charm. The pair are unconcerned with anything past the next drink, the next client, the next opportunity to get one over on a rival. It’s only after Edina’s finances are left in tatters after years of poor decisions and her involvement in Kate Moss’ accidental death that the pair are forced to examine their lives. However, that soul-searching only leads them to hatch a plot to find a sugar daddy so that they can live “the good life” without having to put any more time into such boring pursuits as work.

The resulting expedition to the south of France has a Dirty Rotten Scoundrels feel to it, and is one of the stronger segments of a film that often feels comprised of a series of sketches of varying quality. But during the trip to Cannes, we get to see screenwriter Saunders skewer the disparity between how men and women are expected to age, a gender-bending turn from Patsy that’s almost disturbingly evocative of David Bowie, and a climactic chase scene that somehow ends up with Edina delivering a monologue on aging that gets her as close to sympathetic as we’re ever likely to see her.

All in all, it’s an extremely satisfying

movie for fans of the original television show. Saunders and Lumley toss off absurd gags and biting one-liners as casually as if they were last year’s Gucci gladiator sandals.

Celebrity guests abound, with particularly strong turns from Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Chris Colfer (Glee).

However, if you’re not the type of fashionista who knows the names and faces of the hottest designers and models, be prepared to use context clues to figure out who some of the guest stars are and resign yourself to missing out on some gags entirely.

And if you’re unfamiliar with AbFab in the first place, this may not be the best way to get introduced to them. The supporting cast, including Edina’s mad-genius personal assistant, Bubble (Jane Horrocks), and stickin-the-mud daughter, Saffy (Julia Sawalha), return, but without prior knowledge of their relationships with the principals, you may find yourself wondering just what exactly is happening on screen. And the numerous callbacks to episodes of the series can leave all but the most encyclopedic fan in the dark.

We have no doubt that Edina and Patsy will stumble their way back into our lives at some point in the future, though nothing has been announced yet. Early reviews have been deservingly positive, and it should clean up nicely at the post-Brexit summer box office in the U.K. But for now, seeing the girls float off into the sunset with drinks in hand and lessons unlearned is just as it should be: absolutely fabulous. tmccollum@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

OPENING THIS WEEK Captain Fantastic Filmmakers have become obsessed recently with stories about children who are raised like veal and then thrust into an outside world they can barely understand.

First there was The Wolfpack. Then came Room. Now we have Captain Fantastic, in which Viggo Mortensen portrays a dad who spends a decade in the woods raising and schooling his kids according to his own worldview – only to find that control threatened when they all have to hit the road for a family funeral. The big question in Captain Fantastic is just how much pop-cultural input it’s going to take for the kids to renounce their restrictive upbringing. In other words, how are you going to keep ’em down on the compound after they’ve seen Pokémon Go? The smart money’s on Pikachu, especially because these younguns have no way of knowing that their dad is Aragorn. (R)

Fight Valley This movie features a supporting turn by Holly Holm, who scored one of the greatest upsets in sports history last November by felling the then-undefeated Ronda Rousey with a high kick to the neck. Holm’s acting, though, must be less to write home about, because she doesn’t play any of the female leads in this story of a young woman who trains hard to avenge the loss of her kid sister in a brutal underground fight. Its run at Universal Cineplex 20 is one of only 11 U.S. bookings for the movie, but director Rob Hawk already has a sequel in development. Meanwhile, Ronda Rousey is still counting her Furious 7 money while contentedly humming “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head.” (NR)

Star Trek Beyond So Mr. Sulu is gay now.

And as one of the millions of Americans who are proud to put the A in LGBTQIA+, I couldn’t be happier about it. George Takei, on the other hand? Not so thrilled. The actor who originated the role of Sulu thinks it’s “unfortunate” that the custodians of the new Trek chose to mess with Gene Roddenberry’s original vision by reimagining the Enterprise helmsman as a weenie-hider from way back. And you know what? I love 22

that opinion too. I love it because it’s the last thing you might expect from an actor who’s become such a renowned gay-rights crusader in real life. I love it because – no matter how many flaws I might find in Takei’s argument – it shows that his actorly devotion to a role might be just as important to him as his own role in society. And most of all, I love it because it shows that none of us is entirely right or entirely wrong about this identity/representation jazz. There are as many opinions about the meaning and nature of fictional characters as there are people on the planet. So all we can do is keep discussing it with good will and an open mind. Talk about your infinite diversity in infinite combinations. (PG-13)

ALSO PLAYING The Infiltrator Bryan Cranston has earned raves for his portrayal of the government agent who did more than anyone else in history to prevent the flow of illegal drugs into the United States. (I’m still not sure how that makes one a hero, exactly, but whatever.) Would that the film itself were getting such positive feedback, but the consensus at this point seems to be that it’s a fairly rote story of subterfuge that’s enhanced

by Cranston’s deft work. In fact, some reviewers have called it his best movie role to date.

Remember when leaving TV out of a statement like that wasn’t praising with faint damns? (R)

Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party Court-ordered therapy hasn’t dimmed the lunatic zeal of convicted felon Dinesh D’Souza, whose latest alt-right pseudo-documentary takes on not only the Democrats’ presumptive 2016 nominee, but everyone who might be voting for her as well.

Can’t wait for his next undertaking, 2020: The End of D’Souza’s Probation. (PG-13)

ichigan grindcore trio Cloud Rat brings their intense brand of politically charged metallic punk to Florida for seven dates this month before embarking on an East Coast tour with American black metal legends Wolves in the Throne Room. The Florida leg of the tour begins in Jacksonville and stops by Orlando at Uncle Lou’s on July 24. Orlando Weekly spoke with their guitarist, Rorik Brooks, to discuss the band’s stance on politics, music and how they plan to deal with touring in the midsummer Florida heat.

Orlando Weekly: Your band represents several political movements, including veganism and feminism, but without ever feeling too preachy or forceful. How do you convey your beliefs to audiences who are unfamiliar with or resistant to

these “alternative” ideologies?

Rorik Brooks: I personally don’t like

being preached at, patronized, [or] continually bashed over the head with someone’s political opinion over and over, so we do our best not to be self-righteous schmucks and to be as humble and kind as possible, while still letting our stances be known and being open to dialogue. We want to be an example of folks trying to do what we think is right, without all of the contrived political hyperbole drowning out the music and the real message of peace, unity and commitment to the void.

The music of Cloud Rat is grounded in grindcore, but showcases elements from a variety of other music genres. Aside from the more apparent influence of classic grind, punk and metal, what other styles play a role in your writing?

We collectively love Deftones, Björk, Bonnie Tyler and Portishead. Madison (Marshall, vocals) and Brandon (Hill, drums) are both encyclopedias of musical knowledge, and are always turning me on to so much stuff. Madison is always bring-

That’s where the real anger and emotion is coming from, because most of the lyrics are about a specific lived experience or known person, rather than a hypothetical/ theoretical/fictional piece.

en Stringfellow, leader of ’90s power-pop innovators the Posies and latter-day member of both REM and Big Star, has played all manner of stages throughout his storied career. But this week he embarks on a low-key Florida solo tour with local Tierney Tough of the Pauses for some of his most purposely intimate shows yet. This includes a potluck show at Lil Indies. What does he have in store for us?

Orlando Weekly: How did this mini-tour come together?

Ken Stringfellow: I’d been in touch with

the Pauses about doing something together and they said, “You have to come to Florida, one of you, all of you. I think people will really dig it.” I’m game, I’m going to be in the state this summer, I’ve never done any solo shows in Florida and it would be great to have a knowledgeable guide.

So these are your first Florida solo shows?

I can only say that the Posies’ Florida visits have been few and far between. We had some very weird experiences in Florida in our early days. We played a radio festival on July 4, 1993, in the Tampa area on a bill with Great White and Winger. And we survived.

I don’t know if anyone even liked us! But we survived and that was enough for us.

What do you have planned for these shows?

We have a lot in common musically and I’m too fidgety to just sit and watch, so I’m sure I will implicate myself into Tierney’s set much more than she wants. And there are a few duets that I want to do in my set.

A solo show is a wonderful thing for me, because I can just improvise and do whatever I feel like, and that’s really the only place I can do that in my musical life. I love that about these shows. Every other show you kind of have to have a set list. A solo show, it really doesn’t matter, I don’t even have to finish a song if I don’t want to!

Shortly thereafter, Sleep disbanded, and Dopesmoker was seemingly doomed to obscurity. Guitarist Matt Pike moved on to form High on Fire, and vocalist-bassist Al Cisneros and drummer Chris Hakius established Om. But like a pot-smoke-breathing phoenix, Sleep’s magnum opus rose from the smoldering bong ashes. First circulating as a bootleg, then finding a label home and reincarnating via reissue after reissue, Dopesmoker gained so much underground momentum that Cisneros and Pike began interrupting their successful spinoffs to reunite for intermittent concert performances. Following their first reunion for All Tomorrow’s Parties in 2009, Jason Roeder from the progressive metal band Neurosis stepped in to play drums when Hakius retired.

of grunge. A Sleep song is a study in tension building, yet keeps the listener hanging on to every slight time shift or the occasional entry of Cisneros’s raspy, metered basso.

The minute and second hands sweat and begin to melt, as time becomes more a theory than reality.

This Tuesday, the reunited Sleep will be making a one-off appearance in Orlando to play a benefit show for the victims of the Pulse shooting, along with silent and live auctions throughout the night. This is not part of any tour; just artists trying to help through art.

Though Sleep themselves do not give interviews, tour manager Damon Kelly – knee-deep in logistical preparations for a show that has come together in record time – spoke to the Orlando Weekly.

“I overheard the guys talking about doing a benefit for the victim’s families. I immediately got on board 150 percent.

“I started contacting our endorsements and sponsors asking for donations. I started talking to friends and bands in the music industry. Everyone I talked to said yes and has generously donated auction items. Matt Pike looped me in with Tim Payne. Tim is an Orlando local who was feeling the same way we had been. Now between the both of us, we have auction items from a PRS Guitar to Tony Hawk-signed posters. Beyond all of the monetary relief we are working on, we are hoping to provide a night for the LGBTQ community and all of Orlando to release some grief though movement. I like how responsive our music community is. And as the strong, beautiful love for the Pulse victims goes around, it’s nice to see some of it extend directly to the first responders like last weekend’s Two Peace bill of notable two-piece (get it?) local bands Copper Bones and Howling Midnight (July 16, Orlando Brewing).

Proving good in both music and heart, the bands arranged for police, firefighters, EMTs and Orlando Health employees to drink free while they rocked them right and donated all other proceeds raised that night to the OneOrlando Fund. It was an honorable gesture by the musicians and an honor to drink among heroes.

Writing about punk rock can sometimes get a little rote. There are only so many adjectives available to split the microscopic hairs that result from an infinite amount of retreads at combing an often narrow swath of music. But Goner Records upcomers Nots (July 13, Will’s Pub) evade many of the genre’s typical molds and, in so doing, reinvigorate the form.

Now, a lot of bands would’ve settled there, and these intent ladies could have and been perfectly respectable. But their impact is more than just basic gut immediacy. Their pounding abandon peels your face, but their dark electronic tones and atmosphere linger, adding penetration to the punishment. It’s music that is aimed as much at the head as it is at the viscera, a freaky psych-punk vision that distinguishes Nots in a very crowded class.

Voice Hoist is a bewitching project that weaves tapestries from layers of vocals that aren’t simply waves of ambience, but whole melodic structures with design and aggregate effect. tenor was Orlando trio Manic and the Depressives. As their mental name suggests, their brand of punk rock is a straight dose of raging neurosis. It’s a tightly wound assault that’s all nerves and fury, like an impressively concentrated breakdown.

And it’s one of the more distinctive punk sounds rising from our streets.

While downtown art space Gallery at Avalon Island regularly presents music each month with the truly excellent In-Between Series, it occasionally opens its great and underutilized upstairs theater whenever special engagements come along. And any time Silver Apples visionary Simeon Coxe comes to town certainly qualifies as special.

This time, he came with current collaborator Lydia Winn LeVert as Amphibian Lark (July 15). Unfortunately, he brought just a laptop instead of his legendary selfmade musical technology, and it wasn’t the most active or vigorous set of the night.

But their combined spirit was requisitely left-field. At its most salient, the performance offered minimalist transmissions that channel some of the original frontier of electronic futurism that Simeon antici-

pated way back in the ’60s. Add in a curious chanteuse-pop edge and you’ve got an act that blends weird innocence, outsider edge and otherworldly frequency.

The openers on this avant-garde showcase were also of particular note.

Representing Orlando was Unbliterati, the side dish of recently revived, locally legendary free-dance band Obliterati (who have some recording history with Simeon Coxe). In this iteration, the art freaks broke up the perpetual groove of their flagship sound and injected a little more nerve and improv. With their collision of No Wave, postpunk, jazz and electronics, however, they were like a virile conjuring of the seminal NYC art-rock scene of the ’70s and ’80s.

I’ve seen plenty of loopers but almost none as based on vocals as intriguing Sarasota artist Voice Hoist. Voice Hoist is a bewitching project that weaves tapestries from layers of voice that aren’t simply waves of ambience interacting incidentally, but whole melodic structures with design and aggregate effect.

Finally, there was ambient tape act Proud/Father. Sonically, the New Orleans artist showed the ability to scale monolithic summits like Fuck Buttons, something I don’t say lightly. But you don’t have to be a drone aficionado to be swept by his multimedia show. Visually, sonically and conceptually, the performance was set in the context of his current muse of Latin-American revolution, employing video from the ’80s and reworking the audio from it into his sonic composition.

Cardboard Art Festival ART

The Daily City’s annual Cardboard Art Festival is one of Orlando’s signature art events, and it returns for its fourth year beginning this weekend. Parties, performances, gallery viewings and special events for kids take place over the next two weekends in two large storefronts at the SoDo Shopping Center. This year brings a new Junior Gallery, where all the young artists’ creations are displayed. The Interactive Cardboard Mural returns too, only this year it’ll be in both the Junior and the Main galleries. Cardboard Hearts, a night dedicated to SoDo and Pulse at which you can participate in making and decorating memorials, takes place Thursday, July 28. Tonight’s show features one of the driving forces behind getting this place open, local composer Mark Piszczek, with his group Strange Angels, which includes local jazz cats Doug Mathews, Marc Clermont and Ed Krout: “We will be exploring musical soundscapes, free improvisational inventions and some damn catchy tunes by yours truly, Carla Bley, and Charlie Mingus. If you love the ECM record label, you’ll almost certainly love our music.” Now, even if you don’t love the ECM label or know who Bley or Mingus are, this is your chance to experience a brand-new happening right at its inception. Exit Dust MUSIC

Gainesville trio Exit Dust (featuring members of Rubbish and Vermin) distinguish themselves in the crowded Florida punk/hardcore field by introducing healthy doses of eldritch, melancholy, gothic atmospherics into their otherwise ferocious punk charge, with nods to early Christian Death and the Super Heroines looming large.

For the record collectors out there, there is some sonic commonality with the darker “peace punk” bands of the ’80s – including Rubella Ballet, the Mob and Part 1 – but equal affinity to early LA death rock circa the Hell Comes to Your House compilation.

Guitarist Daniel Halal’s riffs are a wonder, hearkening back to the glory days of Rikk Agnew’s reverb-drenched shards of glass, deceptively simple but really an intricate latticework holding the songs together. Over the course of two demos, their songwriting and playing has progressed leaps and bounds, making them one of the best-kept secrets of the current goth-punk vanguard. Live, the sound is more immediate and urgent, so don’t miss it. Bad Santa and the Angry Elves MUSIC

Despite the humid 90-degree weather, Christmas is coming early this year. Even in vibrantly tacky red and green holiday costumes, members of the Christmas parody band Bad Santa and the Angry Elves are still professional quality performers who have been making music and bringing a rowdy musical holiday spirit to crowds since before 2011. There won’t be traditional Christmas carols per se, but there will be rock & roll versions of classics like “Santa Baby” and punk rock originals like “Jump in My Sleigh” and “Magic Santa.” Plus, their holiday-themed “covers” of songs by the likes of the Ramones and Rage Against the Machine are not to be missed, even if they rely more on holiday spirit than technical prowess. There Will Be Words: A Religious Experience LITERARY

With a career that spans four decades and more than 20 albums, the Honorable Beres Hammond OJ (yeah, this guy received the Jamaican equivalent of a knighthood for his contributions to Jamaican music) is a living reggae legend. Known mostly for his work in lovers rock, a reggae subgenre that tends to eschew politics and Rastafarian symbolism in favor of soulful romantic pleas and declarations, Hammond often has more in common thematically with Sam Cooke than Peter Tosh. Even at the age of 60, Hammond’s voice is as smooth as ever, and his most recent album, 2012’s Grammy-nominated One Love, One Life, showed a new focus on socially conscious empowerment anthems, proving that this consummate artist has no intention of stagnating. – Thaddeus McCollum

Local writer Jesse Bradley spends most of his time promoting other scribes at his There Will Be Words reading series, one of the city’s best showcases for homegrown poetry and prose. Even tonight, a special edition due to the release of Bradley’s new novel, The Adventures of Jesus Christ, Boy Detective, sees him inviting talented writers onstage to share the limelight. The novel – which traces the plight of Jesus after he is forced to inhabit the body of an Encyclopedia Brown-like prepubescent sleuth and solve mysteries with the aid of the boy’s uncle, who is also maybe a serial killer – has been generating some promising buzz for its humorously sacrilegious take on an overlooked genre. For this release party, guest readers like Teege Braune, Trevor Fraser and Brianne Manning offer up their own poems or stories that take on religion, a topic that should end up being both thoughtfully examined and mercilessly skewered by the end of the evening. I’m sorry if my English is wrong. I’m writing from Germany, where I am being heartbroken and not knowing how to go on. I’ve been seeing a guy for a couple of months and slowly falling in love with him. “Peter” has always been very open to me about himself, his failed relationships and his commitment issues. He talks frequently about his exboyfriend from five years ago and how being left created a deep fear of being left once again. He also had a relationship that ended a year ago. Yesterday he told me he’s still in love with the guy from one year ago but that his love is unrequited. He also told me that he values what we have but he can’t stop loving this other guy. And he can’t promise me that this will change. I am in love and heartbroken at the same time, hopeful and fearful, and unable to get up for the last couple of days.

Deep down, I fear I will get hurt. I already am hurt. I’m falling for someone who’s not able to love me back, who’s stuck in the past, but who wishes to change that in order to let me into his life. Should I stay and wait for Peter to get better even if it hurts to know he’s in love with someone other than me? Or should I leave him as so many others have and hurt him?

Healing Erotic Love Problem Means Everything Peter could be lying to you. That’s probably not what you wanted or expected to hear, HELPME, and you’ll find some more hopeful/ less cynical advice further down, I promise.

But when a guy with “commitment issues” tells you he’s struggling with the emotional fallout of a relationship that ended five years ago and still hopelessly in love with someone he hasn’t seen for a year … you have to entertain the possibility that he could be lying to you.

You always have to entertain that possibility – with new loves, old loves, blue loves.

When someone tells us they have “commitment issues,” we’re primed to hear this: “This boy is incapable of committing until healed (by a therapist, by a new love, by the passage of time).” But sometimes what they mean is this: “I have no interest in committing – not to you, not to anyone, not now, not ever.” But instead of owning up to that (because people who want to remain single are viewed as damaged?) or telling you he’s not seeking anything serious (because you might leave him, and he’s not done with your ass?), Peter invents/inflates a pair of past loves that render him incapable of loving you the way you deserve to be loved and blah blah blah and off the hook. Not a child-man who won’t commit, but a victim who would commit if he could commit but – sob! – he can’t commit.

But, hey, maybe he’s telling you the truth.

Maybe he’s in love with Mr. One Year Ago. So tell him he can love you and love the other guy at the same time.
