The city of Orlando is partnering with United Arts of Central Florida and local publisher Burrow Press to search for a poet laureate who will serve as the city’s “official storyteller,” Mayor Buddy Dyer says. The poet laureate will be chosen from three finalists selected by a committee made up of local poets and literary experts from places like the University of Central Florida, Valencia College and Rollins College. Read the requirements at unitedarts.cc/poet-laureate, and apply for the position until Aug. 7. Orlando’s new poet laureate will be announced in October.

Orange County’s animal shelter is nearly full with stray and homeless pets this summer, prompting officials to reduce adoption fees to $10 or waive them in some cases. The shelter is almost at capacity with 539 dogs and cats, largely due to the breeding season that peaks during the summer months. County staff have already vaccinated, spayed and neutered many of the available pets. Animals that have been at the shelter for more than 10 days are being featured on the agency’s social media pages, and adoption fees for those pets have been waived. Pulse first responder with PTSD granted disability by board:

An Orlando Police officer diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder after responding to the Pulse massacre was granted a disability pension by the police pension board last week. Officer Gerry Realin took leave shortly after working for hours with the department’s hazardous materials team to remove 49 bodies from Pulse. OPD offered him a desk assignment at City Hall, but Realin did not take the job. Last month, the department stopped paying him. During the meeting, Steve McKillop, an attorney for the police department, accused Realin of refusing to accept OPD’s help so that he could obtain disability benefits and not return to work as a police officer. The pension board did not agree with OPD’s argument, and voted unanimously to give Realin full disability benefits.

Police stop of State Attorney Aramis Ayala goes viral:

A video of Orlando Police officers stopping Orange-Osceola State Attorney Aramis Ayala got more than a million views last week. Ayala, Florida’s first AfricanAmerican state prosecutor, was pulled over by two white Orlando Police officers on June 19 after leaving FAMU Law School. Officers awkwardly tried to explain that they stopped her because her license plate tags didn’t come up and because her car’s window tint was too dark. Some accused the officers of racial profiling.

Both Ayala and OPD concluded the traffic stop was consistent with Florida law, though Ayala did say she hoped to sit down with Chief Mina for a dialogue on how to maintain a “mutually respectful relationship between law enforcement and the community.” mcordeiro@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

So it’s the crime, not the cover-up.

Actually, it’s the cover-up, too, but focus for now on the crime.

On June 3, 2016, Donald Trump Jr., a 38-year-old grown-up whose father was running for president of the United States, received an email from one of his father’s business partners informing him that the Russian government wanted to provide the campaign with “very high-level and sensitive information” about Hillary Clinton’s dealings with Russia, as part of the regime’s “support for Mr. Trump.”

Unfazed by the notion that a hostile foreign government was seeking to interfere in an American election and prop up his father, Trump Jr. quickly replied: “If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.”

Four days later, on June 7, Trump Jr. negotiated a meeting with a Kremlin-tied lawyer. Three hours after the meeting was confirmed, Trump Sr. – who now swears he only learned of all this recently – announced to the world that he would, in the next week, give a major address detailing Clinton’s “corrupt dealings” with foreign governments, including Russia.

(That speech never happened.)

Two days later, on June 9, the meeting took place: Trump Jr., campaign manager Paul Manafort, Trump son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner, the attorney, Natalia Veselnitskaya, and, we learned Friday, a Russian-American lobbyist with alleged ties to Russian intelligence named Rinat Akhmetshin, who told the Associated Press that Veselnitskaya brought documents purporting to

show the illicit transfer of funds to the Democratic National Committee. (CNN reported that three other people attended the meeting who have not yet been identified.)

In Akhmetshin’s telling, Trump Jr. asked Veselnitskaya for more proof, and Veselnitskaya said the Trump campaign would need to do more research, at which point Trump Jr. lost interest. In Trump Jr.’s telling, Veselnitskaya didn’t have the goods and the conversation turned to adoption policy, then the campaign never thought about the Russian government’s professed “support for Mr. Trump” again or thought this was worth mentioning to the FBI – even after Wikileaks began pumping out Russian-hacked emails and we learned the Russians were running a massive fake-news operation.

For the moment, let’s give them the benefit of the doubt. Let’s say that this was the extent of the campaign’s conversations with Russian apparatchiks, that the Russians opened this door, found the Trump campaign clearly receptive, and then decided never to talk through it again. Let’s say that Trump’s promises of Clinton dirt a few hours after Trump Jr. confirmed this meeting was 100 percent coincidence, and he really did just learn about this. Let’s say that Manafort’s deep and well-documented ties to the Kremlin and Kushner’s amnesia when it came time to fill out his security-clearance forms were likewise coincidental. And let’s say none of this had anything to do with Trump’s decision to fire James Comey.

ou are what you eat.” When Brillat-Savarin coined the first version of this much-used maxim in 1825, he was referring rather strictly to the relationship between diet and health. But what people eat is much more than that – it’s a synecdoche of how they live their lives. As shown in this selection of food writing from the past 12 months, food is a keen lens through which to view not just history but psychology, economics, foreign trade, civil rights, journalism, advertising and politics. These five books show what a mistake it is to underestimate food writing.

Most pop-culture images of Appalachia are either cruelly comic (Li’l Abner, Jed Clampett) or cruelly misleading (the film Deliverance) or simply cruel (the Hatfield-McCoy feud). In her most recent book, award-winning food writer Ronni Lundy tenderly demolishes that mythography with a portrait of a people and place mostly misunderstood.

Victuals: An Appalachian Journey, With Recipes (Clarkson Potter, August 2016) portrays a modern generation of Appalachians carving small businesses out of their fierce love of the region: a young couple mining salt, a touring musician turned heirloomgrains baker. In the crevices of her interviews with these committed individuals, the history of the mountains comes into focus. It’s a deeply researched book suffused with love.

Just as devoted to the preservation of historical foodways but more scholarly than Lundy’s affectionate paean is John T. Edge’s Potlikker Papers: A Food History of the Modern South (Penguin Press, May 2017). Edge, director of the Southern Foodways Alliance, charts the turbulent history of a vastly varied territory, but – in a surprising yet inspired move – doesn’t attempt to treat slavery days and the antebellum period as merely one section of a book. Instead Edge picks up during the Freedom Struggles of the 1950s-1970s, documenting the cooks and restaurants that provided clandestine meeting places for the civil rights activists, as well as those in which the Ku Klux Klan plotted violent resistance. Subsequent sections of the book cover the influx of hippies “from out” during the 1970s

back-to-the-land movement and the go-go ’80s, in which ersatz Southern dishes (“Cajun” pasta, etc.) became trendy through the ministrations of practitioners like Paul Prudhomme and the editors of Birminghambased Southern Living – which, by the 1980s, was the most profitable magazine in America.

The Potlikker Papers also discusses more current icons of Southern cooking, including the nowdisgraced Paula Deen to the ascendant food historian Michael W. Twitty, founder of the website AfroCulinaria.

Twitty has been called a “cheftivist,” as he not only researches history but takes an opinionated stance on who “owns” Southern food, exuberantly wading into the waters of the African diaspora and the heritage of the slavery system. So while Victuals and Potlikker read more like lessons, The Cooking Gene (Amistad, Aug. 1) is something more of a one-man show starring Twitty himself.

The dazzle of his personality can lead readers to overlook the lack of bibliographical support for some statements (“chickens got served to preachers because chickens had always flounced in the hands of African priests, and nobody remembered why”), but make no mistake – most of Twitty’s provocations are underpinned with primary-source research. He simply chooses to make the story personal, and why not?

Baking powder is an integral ingredient of that Southern staple, the biscuit – or at least it has been since its widespread commercial availability starting in the 19th century. Linda Civitello’s Baking Powder Wars: The Cutthroat Food Fight That Revolutionized Cooking (University of Illinois Press, May 2017) widens out the geographical lens to include all of America, Europe and the rest of the world. This meticulously researched history is heavy on fact, limning

the ferocious trade wars fought by the various commercial producers of baking powder. But it also brings in issues of women’s rights, the traditions of apprenticeship and trade guilds, the rise of consumer protections and labeling laws, and the involvement of politics (and more to the point, lobbyists) in what we eat.

What She Ate: Six Remarkable Women and the Food That Tells Their Stories (Laura Shapiro, Viking Press, July 25) examines the role of eating and cooking in the lives of six very different women, including Eleanor Roosevelt, Eva Braun and Helen Gurley Brown. What She Ate is more biography than food book, but what they ate and how they felt about cooking and eating provides a spyhole into their remarkably disparate lives and times.

One of Shapiro’s women is British novelist Barbara Pym. After her death in 1980, Pym’s sister Hilary published The Barbara Pym Cookbook – an appropriate tribute to Pym, who wrote, “The small things of life were often so much bigger than the great things … the trivial pleasure like cooking.” Despite her mastery of British understatement, we can read and agree with Pym’s meaning, which reflects the intentions of all the authors here: Food is most certainly no trivial part of life, but life itself. jyoung@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

cience doesn’t care if you’re a genius. In science, each voice and experiment matters, and often being gloriously wrong is a critical detour that helps the world’s most dedicated thinkers arrive at the truth. This is how science works, and it’s a pattern that offers sensitive readers hope to evolve beyond their failures. If titans of science like Charles Darwin can be blind to how their own existing theories disprove their own existing science – which Lisa Feldman Barrett discusses briefly in her book How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain – then maybe it’s OK to block out every invitation to the beach this summer to just do you (even if society has seemingly endless, documented evidence that summer is fun). Maybe it’s OK to sit inside and let some of 2017’s best books in brain science light the way to a solid summer instead, no sunburns required.

Let’s start with this year’s biggest blockbuster of science reads, Hit Makers: The Science of Popularity in an Age of Distraction (Penguin Press, February 2017). It’s a page-turner from The Atlantic editor Derek Thompson that explores the mechanics of major pop fads, regurgitated fashions and viral sensations. For mainstream audiences, it provides a glimpse into how

TV networks select the TV shows you love and how record labels gauge a hit song’s marketability. For artists and creators, it offers scientific and historic insights into massively popular works, from George Lucas’ Star Wars to Claude Monet’s water lilies. As obvious as the subject matter is, the conclusions that Thompson draws hold small surprises that support his overarching theory of popularity – which may not be science canon yet, but has the potential to inspire anyone who agrees with Thompson’s observation that “Pleasure is a kind of thinking.”

Pleasure is a topic more thoroughly explored by Feldman Barrett, a neuroscientist whose innovative research has led her to form a bold new theory of constructed emotion. At times, her book reads almost like self-help but instead, she’s revealing a serious science that refutes centuries of stubborn knowledge regarding how humans feel. Through personal anecdotes and attentive metaphor, she outlines her theory with stunning simplicity in How Emotions Are Made (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, March 2017). Throughout the book, you can also submit yourself to small tests that back her theory, and engage with the science in a way that can become personally meaningful. It’s a book that has the ability to change

how you approach the experiences you want in life, without enduring the schmaltzy tone of daytime TV doctors.

Speaking of centuries of science based on unfounded theory, Damion Searls has gifted the world this year with a long-awaited, compelling biography, The Inkblots: Hermann Rorschach, His Iconic Test, and the Power of Seeing (Crown, February 2017). The book is also a history of the Rorschach test, how it was meant to be used, how it was abused, how it endures, but more importantly, it’s a testament to intuition that oddly blends well with Thompson’s Hit Makers hypothesis.

Rorschach was as well-studied in visual arts as he was in the psychiatry he practiced. His inkblots reference both disciplines to offer patients at orlandoweekly.com

The result is an effective test that can cut out months of conversation to help doctors and patients learn more, faster, so they can get down to helping people improve their lives. Nobody knows exactly why his test works, but attempts to duplicate Rorschach’s blots have been about as successful as Potato Jesus is beautiful. The conclusion of Searls’ story takes you to this reassuring place that you can cozy into whether you’re on a couch by the A/C vent or on a towel under the sun, where the most noble ambitions occasionally can be achieved not by careful calculation, but by simply caring, even in science.

et’s start off this summer’s master class in musical outliers and rule-breakers with a hefty dose of visual iconography and a primer on the importance of local scene-building. Spoke: Images and Stories From the 1980s Washington, DC Punk Scene (Akashic, February 2017) accomplishes both of these aims handily. As a visual record, the coffee-table book succeeds commendably with page after page of gorgeous, oversized, black-and-white images of the prime movers in D.C. punk circa the Me Decade. So you get the expected – Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Fugazi – but also a hefty dose of the underdogs – Fire Party, Beefeater, Nation of Ulysses. The photos tell the story better than accompanying texts – all kinetic action, the pages are almost humid with sweat and spit.

Photos of Afropunk godfathers the Bad Brains going off in Spoke provide a natural link to the next installment of our visual survey course. Prince: The Coloring Book (Feral House, April 2017) is a new spin on the adult coloring book released by the malcontents at Feral House. The third in their coloring book series behind David Bowie and Lemmy Kilmister, Prince is a psychedelic visual tribute to the much-missed Purple One in the form of heartfelt and abstract musings on the many personae of The Artist. With contributors including Tony Millionaire, Jeffrey Worman and Casanova Frankenstein down through delightfully eccentric fan-art renderings, this is as touching a tribute to Prince as we’ve seen in awhile.

Make sure you have plenty of purple crayons.

A direct through line can be drawn between the otherworldly visuals, outsized persona and voracious musical dexterity of Prince and the otherworldly visuals, outsized persona and voracious musical dexterity of the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Sit down, it’s time for some serious musical history with Paul Steinbeck’s incredible Message to Our Folks (University of Chicago, February 2017).

behind a heady legacy of collective action with their AACM organization, a back catalog of group and solo endeavors that constantly yields new adventures in sound, and a visual image that combines Afrofuturism with rockstar theater on overdrive. The book is heavy on music theory, but this is still an absolutely engrossing entry-level read about a group that is still timely in the way that, say, Lester Bowie namesake David Bowie is – visually, thematically, sonically – and always deserving of another look.

Latterday Joseph Jarman, as a Buddhist priest, would inform you that the First Noble Truth is that all life is suffering, and musician Jason Molina embodied that tragically. The singersongwriter and leader of well-loved indie outfits Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. gets the memoir treatment in Erin Osmon’s Riding With the Ghost (Rowman & Littlefield, May 2017).

Osmon digs deep into Molina’s oeuvre and interviews close friends, lovers and collaborators to piece together a portrait of a relentlessly creative musician who shared everything in song but very much kept his own counsel in life.

The latter portions of the book – detail-

ing Molina’s descent into alcoholism and mental breakdown – are particularly harrowing.

On the other hand, if the best revenge is living well, then Cro-Mags vocalist and punk survivor John Joseph stands as proof of that old saw. The man’s seemingly seen it all and done it all, and his sprawling doorstop-sized memoir, Evolution of a Cro-Magnon (2nd ed., Punkhouse, April 2017) tells it all. After a youth filled with abuse and trauma, Joseph lands in New York City in the epicenter of the infamous NYHC hardcore scene and ends up fronting perhaps the most infamous band of them all, the unrelenting Cro-Mags.

Evolution is as much a first-person history of that influential and combustible band as it is a love letter to a New York long gone and a tale of spiritual renewal in Joseph’s embrace of the Krishna faith. Aside from the occasional bumpy tangent, Joseph’s writing voice is refreshingly original and this is, at its core, essential primary source material. reaks for chaotic confessionals, visceral noise and the surreal will recognize that the insights most worth having sometimes require deep dives into disorder. “I can help you find the buried treasure,” as Kathy Acker wrote in Pussy, King of the Pirates, “but I’ll have to take you down to the bottom of the world.” Three new biographical texts stand as the most complete histories of the lives of and testaments to the contributions of their subjects, filtered neither through male contemporaries nor cultural mythos.

In keeping with her approach to industrial music and confrontational performance that challenged ’70s feminism as well as social mores at large, Cosey Fanni Tutti aims to confront hard-to-face realities in her “unblinkered” memoir Art, Sex, Music (Faber & Faber, May 2017). Throughout an incredibly readable chronicle of a young life in Hull, the beginnings of COUM Transmissions in a disused pickle factory, and street fights between Hells Angels and skinheads, Fanni Tutti incorporates more intimate episodes like rewinding cassettes with pen caps in strip-club dressing rooms and caretaking her collaborators while maintaining a rigorous creative schedule often as the only gainfully employed member of the collective.

Fanni Tutti dives into the opportunity to correct myths and reclaim rightful authorship from her former COUM collaborator, Throbbing Gristle bandmate and partner, Genesis P-Orridge.

Fans of the pandrogyne psychick pilot should expect a challenge, but admirers of COUM, TG, and Chris and Cosey are promised a flood of delightful histories drawn from diaries and conversations with lifelong collaborators and friends, detailing a practice defined by the reflexive motto: “My life is my art – my art is my life.”

Chris Kraus’ literary biography After Kathy Acker (MIT Press, Aug. 18) also aims at revised historical and critical recognition. At a moment less hostile to Acker’s digressive first-person fiction, Kraus – a writer, filmmaker and founder of Semiotext(e) imprint Native Agents – channels an influx of popular attention from the television adaptation of her novel I Love Dick – which shares a psychosexual confessionalism

with Acker’s best known works – to redefine the disruptive intensity in her subject’s perceived vulnerability, shining a blacklight over the white lies of her self-made mythologies.

It’s impossible to overstate the monumentality of these minds side-byside. Keen Acker readers are familiar with the semi-autobiographical tales recycled across her works, but Kraus dodges those magical thoughts and focuses on examining Acker as a “semi-controllable continuum” who worked with her memories until “they became conduits to something a-personal, until they became myth.” Kraus combines biography and philosophy, exhibiting intimate familiarity with not only French critical theory – one of Acker’s primary inspirations– but also the punk poet’s vast “constellation of influences.” Reading tarot, interpreting astrological signs, Kraus mimics the disjunction of Acker’s identities by intercutting diary entries and excerpts from her correspondence, embracing fragmentation as a method for inquiry.

Leonora Carrington’s memoir Down Below (New York Review of Books, April 2017) – a dreamlike text by the painter, novelist and exalted femme enfant of the Surrealists – frays iden-

tity to the furthest extent. Originally journaled over the course of five days in August 1943 and later reviewed together by Carrington and Marina Warner in the late ’80s, Down Below is Carrington’s account of a descent into total dissociation following not only the imprisonment of Max Ernst, but more importantly her own paranoid paralysis over encroaching automatons and a World War she feared was “being waged hypnotically.”

Treated with an epilepsy-inducing drug intended to prompt “therapeutic” convulsions in a Spanish sanatorium, Carrington’s “inner turmoil became a cosmic problem” as she imagined “goings on of her body” directly impacting physical reality. To survive the sadism of her environment, she discovers cosmologies in personal effects, gives “alchemical life” to objects, and establishes motifs and landscapes that she would continue to code into her paintings and stories. A far cry from the “deliberate derangement of all the senses” sought by the likes of Rimbaud, Carrington writes herself back from real trauma with astonishing lucidity: “I know that once I have written it down, I shall be delivered.” arts@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

ercival Everett once said, “Every novel is experimental.” To make the most of the novel is to push the boundaries of the form itself (space, time, language), to create alluring and elusive structures that seem to hang together as if by magic. Álvaro Enrigue’s Sudden Death (Riverhead, February 2016) explores history in service of the present.

Though the novel is deeply researched, it prizes imagination over fact. Its tone is playful. Fierce, quick chapters weave disparate storylines. We follow, among many threads, a tennis match between the Italian painter Caravaggio and the Spanish poet Quevedo using a ball made from the hair of Anne Boleyn (fiction).

We discover that tennis originated as a game of “angels” versus “demons” playing for control of the soul/ball (fact).

As the Counter-Reformation unfolds in the Old World, another major thread reimagines Cortés and La Malinche’s relationship, following the trail of bodies that begins to shape the New World.

How these threads hold the book together will confound and dazzle, even as you wonder (along with the author, who shows up at one point to wonder with you) what the book is actually about.

In interviews Enrigue is not so uncertain, casually dropping maxims like “a novelist has the right to be a prophet looking backwards.” This quote is a key to Enrigue’s intentions in Sudden Death, as well as Hari Kunzru’s in White Tears (Knopf, March 2017), a novel equally concerned with history’s influence.

White Tears begins as a traditional realist story about young white record producers obsessed with the “authenticity” of “black music.” But when they record a man singing in a park and try to pass it off as a rare blues record by an undiscovered Delta talent, the musical past they cherish begins to literally haunt them, the narrator becomes less and less reliable, and, about halfway through, the book performs a stylistic 180 as Kunzru deftly collapses time to overlay historical parallels of systemic racism and cultural appropriation. The result is not didactic, but rather a mashup of ghost story, noir, dark satire and double-edged revenge tale.

Kunzru’s trick is subtle, immersive, incredibly effective and, like a gunpowder-guzzling Daffy Duck, can only be 18

performed once. Or in Enrigue’s words: “Every great novel is the first and last of its kind.” Yes. And for a novel to be the first of its kind, it must begin as an experiment to discover its matchless form. Which brings us back to Everett, whose massive bibliography is proof of concept. His latest novel forms a tighter braid than Sudden Death and plays with genre (and cliché) like White Tears.

Kevin Pace, the narrator of So Much Blue (Graywolf, June 2017), is a middle-aged abstract painter (married, two children) working on a canvas he won’t let anyone see – one secret in a novel full of them. Pace’s story flashes back to a decade-old affair in Paris and a 30-years-ago trip to war-torn El Salvador. Though each storyline could be a separate book (family drama, love story, buddy-picture), the triptych amounts to a braid narrative held together by an extended metaphor: the color blue. The realism is masterfully executed, the literary trope perfectly deployed, and though it may seem like pedestrian territory for Everett, there is an underlying meta-joke: a story following fairly strict form, held together by metaphor, is told by an abstract painter who is skeptical of metaphor. Pace rarely used the color until his secret painting, which is exclusively blue, and about which he says: “The colors all mean something, though I cannot say what.” Pace resists meaning throughout the book, but uses this secret painting to work out his issues and make sense of his life.

Hopefully I have failed to summarize these books. Hopefully you will read them. Oh, and the beach. I forgot to mention the beach. You can read these books at the beach. Hopefully you will bring sunscreen.

hree summer books translate the academic language of women’s studies classes into accessible, compelling prose that could be the summer page-turners you’ve been looking for. If it sounds as if I’m diminishing the seriousness of the topic by urging you to make these your summer reads, it’s only because what counts as a “summer read” has undergone a huge transition in recent years.

As Ilana Masad wrote in a recent article for Broadly, summer reading used to be a time for taking on the serious topics that you didn’t have time for during the rest of the busy year.

And these books certainly fit the bill.

Hunger (Harper, June 2017) is Roxane Gay’s searing memoir about her “fat” body (her term), and how living in such a body became a cage of her own making. As readers of Gay’s previous work know, she was gang-raped by her boyfriend and his friends when she was 12.

In Hunger, she speaks of the effect that the attack had on her.

Gay ate to smother the horrible feelings that she had about the betrayal by her boyfriend, but she also ate because she knew that the bigger she got, the less attractive she would be in a society where “sexy women” are thin. And she also knew that the bigger she got, the more imposing she would be. She made a fortress of herself, but as she reveals in the memoir, that fortress became a prison.

In Heartthrobs (Oxford University, May 2017), Carol Dyhouse turns the tables on the male gaze, the gaze that women grow up under. In her study, Dyhouse looks at popular culture beginning around the turn of the 20th century. She examines books, films and other forms of cultural production to look at the figure of the “male sex symbol,” that women developed “hysteria” over. (Hysteria being the loaded catchall term for female behavior outside the acceptable norm.)

The producers of culture responded to women’s desires – and often shaped them – by the production of matinee idols, book series, women’s magazines, and other products to cater to the demand for these objects of desire, but Dyhouse also provides critical analysis about the ways that women’s desires could be controlled through who and what was offered to women.

Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud (Plume, June 2017) was written in response to

the election of Donald Trump. Anne Petersen, a cultural critic for BuzzFeed, provides profiles of “unruly” women whose behavior is judged in our current culture as being “too much.” For example, she points out how Serena Williams has been judged “too strong” and recounts all of the criticism of Williams that compares her body and her dominance on the tennis court to a male body. By denigrating Williams’ femininity, critics seek to keep her in line, but Petersen provides evidence of how Williams’ DGAF attitude has allowed her to triumph despite her critics.

Petersen provides similar analyses for women such as Hillary Clinton (too shrill), Melissa McCarthy (too fat), Nicki Minaj (too slutty) and Madonna (too old) among others. Her premise is that “unruly” can be thought of as someone who overflows the container that they are supposed to fit into. Philosopher Julia Kristeva wrote in Powers of Horror that women were seen as “abject,” that is, “too much” and needed to be disciplined and cleaned up. You can see Kristeva’s argument again and again in Petersen’s writings, and I think it’s the best unpacking of French feminist theory for a general audience that I’ve ever encountered.

While readers may argue with some of her choices for who these women are and which categories they overflow, the book provides a fascinating analysis of why certain women in our culture provoke such harsh feelings among their critics. Petersen provides readers with a great philosophical framework with which to argue with your Clintonhating relatives while you’re hanging out at the pool. arts@orlandoweekly.com

Last weekend Disney rocked the Gods & Monsters on July 15. I paid a visit

themed entertainment world with a string of announcements at their D23 Expo convention. Among the long list of new attractions coming to Walt Disney World – including Tomorrowland’s Tron roller coaster, Epcot’s Ratatouille and Guardians of the Galaxy E-tickets, and Hollywood Studios’ Mickey Mouse dark ride – the one I’m most excited for is Galaxy’s Edge, the new Star Wars themed land, if only for the opportunity to sip blue milk inside an authentic interactive alien cantina. But here in Orlando, you don’t have to wait until 2019 to have an immersive imbibing experience.

Ever since the much-missed Adventurers Club closed at Disney’s Pleasure Island, people have been trying to recapture that perfect balance of alcohol and entertainment, and recently I bellied up at two of Orlando best independent bar attractions.

One is a new effort inspired by the dystopian future that’s planting roots on I-Drive; the other is a longtime local theater fixture rooted in reality that’s spreading its wings abroad. They may seem very different, but both are taking the traditional watering hole where no bar has gone before, and doing it with the financial backing of their followers.

GODS & MONSTERS VAULT 5421

When Artegon Marketplace abruptly shuttered in January, one of the few silver linings to that sad story was how swiftly Gods & Monsters, the arts mall’s massive sci-fi and comics superstore, found a new (albeit smaller) home in the nearby Orlando Crossings Mall. The relocation into the International Drive shopping center was initially supposed to be for a single year, but store co-owner Todd Fisher told me they plan to stay put. “When we first jumped on board here, we were still so sideswiped by the Artegon incident that we imagined this would be a temporary solution,” Fisher says, but then he realized “there’s a lot of opportunities opening up for us here.”

Those opportunities include Vault 5421, the new themed bar that debuted inside

on opening afternoon, prying open the forbidding prison-like door in the collectible shop’s rear corner to discover a petite pub overflowing with doomsday detail. Artists Phillip Buchanan and Chad Laubach helped create a theme park-quality environment inspired by the Mad Max movies and Fallout video games, along with countless other post-apocalyptic pieces of pop culture. “We tried to cover all our bases,” says Fisher, revealing hidden references to Tank Girl, Rick & Morty, Adventure Time and the Terminator. The only thing not authentically post-apocalyptic is the generous selection of craft beers and wine-based cocktails, but at least my tasty chocolate porter was served by a battlehardened barkeep who could have stepped straight out of Fury Road.

Fisher expects further expansions “sooner rather than later, especially if the bar takes off.” To make it this far, Gods & Monsters enlisted the aid of their fans through an IndieGogo campaign. “It was very helpful; we didn’t meet our goal but we raised almost $15 grand,” Fisher says. Fisher encourages others exploring crowdfunding to “limit the amount of choices you have for swag,” saying that fulfilling rewards promised to backers can become a “nightmare.”

JOE’S NYC BAR

A day after visiting Vault 5421, I took a trip to Brooklyn for the last Joe’s NYC Bar before the barflies are bound for Europe.

Joe’s was founded in downtown Orlando over a decade ago and enjoyed a rebirth in recent years, becoming the anchor of the St. Matthew’s Tavern’s Fringe Festival offerings. On July 16, St. Matt’s hosted a special edition of the improvised dramatic experience as a fundraiser for their visit to August’s Edinburgh Fringe.

With a focus on the theme of surprises, last Sunday’s one-time-only Joe’s performance was perhaps the best-paced one I’ve attended in years, with a nearperfect balance between loosely scripted scenes, deeply engaged dialogue among the semi-sloshed spectators, and toe-tapping musical interludes featuring Eugene

Snowden. Theater vet (but Joe’s virgin) Meghan Moroney, in particular, made a big impact with her adultery-abetting character, stirring up a fierce debate about fidelity.

Moroney will join creator Christian Kelty and Joe’s regulars Jenn Gannon, Tim Williams and Ali Flores at the Edinburgh Fringe, where the show scored with audiences and critics alike last year. “Our show is designed for you to challenge us, so those Edinburgh audiences took it really seriously,” Kelty tells me, recalling his 2016 Edinburgh experience. “They’re smart, they’re savvy, so we learned last year that we can’t repeat ourselves. It’s a real dangerous place to be, but it’s the best place for Joe’s to be.”

After Scotland, the real NYC will hopefully be the next place for Joe’s to be; Tilted Windmills Theatrical has a two-year option on North American rights to the property, and plans to open a Manhattan company (under Kelty’s direction) next January. But until the big Broadway bucks roll in, Joe’s still relies on financial support from local businesses and fellow artists.

Kelty hasn’t tried online crowdfunding yet, but the July 16 show was a “pay what you want” fundraiser (“We wanted the energy of the people as much as we wanted the money”), and contributions toward their Fringe travels are still being accepted at carla@carlastanton.com.

THE PIE ORLANDO

The Pie offers vivid, sensual, Roman-style pizza al taglio (by the slice) to the fortunate denizens of College Park, so if you’re in the area, pop by for a squarish slab of potato pie (our fave), or a protein-packed “meat lover” with pepperoni, sausage, meatball, mortadella and prosciutto. Hearty and filling tacos are the calling card for this bustling downtown taqueria. Eight bucks scores your choice of two tacos, or the same ingredients in a burrito, in a rice bowl, or tossed in a bag of Doritos. Stick to the tacos – the tortillas are sprinkled with cheddar and fried before being stuffed with sundry meats. Faves are the beefy “Tacosaurus” and “Taco Bomb.” Pass on the chips and queso. RASA ASIAN STREET FOOD

Rasa’s focus is the best dishes from Malaysia’s hawker stalls and, for the most part, they succeed with such dishes as kari puffs, hakka noodles and “luse chicken,” greened in a marinade of cilantro and basil.

The digs are slick, and the inviting bar begs for a cocktail program, though the sake, craft beer and wine crowd don’t seem to mind. Look for bao to be served from the stall in the back of the restaurant soon.

MARKET TO TABLE RESTAURANT

There’s no questioning the skill and technique used to fashion the dishes served at this Winter Garden resto. Chef Ryan Freelove has the chops to pull off proficiently braised lamb shank over truffle gnocchi, and crackling golden tilefish with a succotash of corn salsa and spelt. The menu is seasonal, with a focus on fresh, local and sustainable ingredients (some grown on the roof). On the sweeter end, a giant raspberry macaron filled with vanilla gelato is the way to go, and ideal for sharing. The restaurant is open Wednesdays to

GAVIOTA SEAFOOD & FINE PERUVIAN CUISINE Gaviota brings mighty fine Peruvian cuisine to a revolving-door location in Thornton Park. Starters like anticuchos (grilled beef hearts) and ceviche of grouper impress as much as superb lomo saltado and rice dishes like arroz con pato (duck) and arroz con mariscos (fresh seafood). MILLENIA 106 A focused menu of local, seasonal fare peppered with Portuguese and Brazilian flavors allows journeyman chef Bruno Fonseca to showcase his personal style and brilliant technique. LA MERCE RESTAURANT & MARKET A seafood-leaning menu at this Spanish resto off Park Avenue shows potential, but prices may be scaring off customers who’ll never get to try their excellent black seafood paella (with squid ink), octopus carpaccio, or grouper with clams.

A proper-good flan will please the custard set, and service is as friendly as can be.

The atmosphere is damn fun, but the menu needs a bit of work. Glimmers of hope come from the kitchen in the fried chicken, a classic poutine with a peppery gravy, and desserts from recipes of the owner’s grandmother – the pecan pie and moonshine cake in particular. There’s nothing novel at James Beard Award nominee Brandon McGlamery’s Maitland resto, but there’s plenty good – from the design to the cocktail program to such dishes as diver scallop ceviche, flavorful bone-in ribeye, and stellar swordfish. Meats are often plonked atop starches and veggies here, BTW. More goodness: peppery (though expensive) crab cake and the au poivre burger, which is our new favorite. Open daily. 640 S. HUNGER STREET TACOS The gourmet taco trend gains traction at Hunger Street Tacos, named after the famed Mexico City strip. Brisket, chorizo and chicken tinga tacos are twice-tortillaed in proper fashion. Vegan (sautéed hibiscus taco) and vegetarian options (squash blossom quesadilla; vegetable tinga) will please the meatless crowd.

Desserts like chocoflan and Key lime pie with toasted meringue are more than just mere afterthoughts. Closed Sundays.

Springs fat and happy. A few bites of the hummingbird cake will definitely slow the pace of your park perambulations.

IPHO NOODLE HOUSE Vietnamese fare comes to Maitland with this second outpost of the Lake Mary original iPho. The interior won’t lift your spirits, but a savory golden pancake folded with shrimp, pork and bean sprouts will. As for their signature pho, the broth veers toward the sweeter side, but it’s hearty and can be made heartier with the addition of oxtail. Bracing beef and pork noodle soup with lemongrass is a cold-sufferer’s delight. Ask for the banh mi menu if you’re not handed one.

CHROMA MODERN BAR + KITCHEN The modern kitchen anchoring Lake Nona Town Center’s ultra-modern landscape serves up some time-honored dishes courtesy of chef Jason Bergeron.

MAESTRO CUCINA NAPOLETANA Rosario Spagnolo returns to Park Avenue in this joint venture with fellow Neapolitan Antonio Martino. Sure, better Neapolitan pizzas can be had elsewhere, but you won’t find a better space in which to enjoy a slice of pie, or antipasti, pasta con polpette or spezzatino di vitello. Open daily. 528 S. DOMU Popular ramen joint lives up to the hype offering near-perfect bowls of tonkotsu, shoyu, miso and curry ramen. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

BY ST EVE SCHNEID ER This week’s two biggest releases arrive in theaters riding an avalanche of publicity concerning their purported visual magnificence. In each case, we’re being urged to shell out for the most elaborate viewing format possible – preferably the full 70mm IMAX 4D with complimentary reach-around. Behind all this hyperbole lies two distinct possibilities: 1) This week will mark a major step forward in the history of film as a visual medium; and 2) by the time both of these pictures reach Reelz, we might have to admit that they’re actually kind of lousy.

Unless you’re the kind of person whose Christmas traditions include a family viewing of Avatar.

OPENING THIS WEEK Dunkirk Christopher Nolan’s depiction of the evacuation of

Dunkirk boasts a whole mess of superlatives: First use of handheld IMAX cameras in a feature film! Greatest percentage of IMAX footage in a Nolan film (75 percent)! Most extensive use of the Etch-a-Sketch as a storyboarding tool! To accommodate all this visual razzle-dazzle, Nolan had to jettison some lesser frills – like dialogue and characterization. Largely wordless, the film allegedly tells us next to nothing about its characters’ personal histories; the director felt that knowing much of anything about the key players would detract from the experience of wondering how they were going to escape a life-or-death situation. Hey, I’ve had relationships that were like that, but nobody suggested blowing them up to the size of a small building. (PG-13) Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets “Visionary” director

Luc Besson returns to the sci-fi territory he mined in the wellregarded The Fifth Element. Just try to ignore that viewers whose major expenditure was diapers when that picture came out now devote most of their money to college tuition. Initial reports are that Valerian, a space opera based on a French comic book, has more hallucinogenic WTF flourishes than the second Guardians of the Galaxy – including Rihanna’s appearance as a shape-shifting sex worker. (Personally, I never felt there was any urgency for her to shift out of the shape she was in, although I would like to see Chris Brown morph into something without hands.) Critics are already complaining, however, that the movie’s production design and effects don’t adequately compensate for rote plotting and inferior dialogue.

I guess that’s what they mean by “visionary.” (“Coming next summer, from tin-eared filmmaker Luc Besson …”) (PG-13)

Girls Trip Witness the evolution of the asshole-buddies genre:

“It’s juvenile, scatological trash.” “It’s juvenile, scatological trash, but the first one made money, so why not?” “It’s juvenile, scatological trash, but it’s women this time, so you know, whatevs.” “It’s juvenile, scatological trash, but it’s nonwhite women, so praise it with the quickness!” Reading the desperately fawning trade reviews for Girls Trip – a gross-out bonding picture headlined by Regina Hall and Queen Latifah – made me feel as if we’re living in a world where those “Fatties” flicks in Tropic Thunder qualify as high art, and where white, neoliberal guilt has surpassed hydrogen as the most abundant element in the universe. Variety wants you to know that even the clumsy post-production dubbing “works like a charm.” (I’m not kidding.) I can’t wait until Hollywood realizes its ambition of making a gay Muslim Hangover, and the critical cognoscenti is so afraid to say it sucks that its Metacritic page is just a big 404 message. (R) The Bad Batch A graphic horror comedy about a woman who survives captivity in a holding pen just outside Texas. WARNING: Contains feces, dismemberment and Keanu Reeves. (R) ALSO PLAYING: Jagga Jasoos Annoying autobiographical digression: At the age

of 52, I recently wrote my first-ever rock musical. And I was pretty proud of myself for having managed to pen nine original songs. Then I learned that Jagga Jasoos, a Hindi musical mystery about a boy detective who searches for his vanished father, features a full 29 original numbers, all of which are tied tightly to the narrative. Good talk, Jagga. I’m so glad you’re in this class to set the grading curve. (NR) The Little Hours Aubrey Plaza and Kate “Oates” Micucci play

Writing and recording wasn’t the last challenge for the musician. Afterward, Barthel figured that all of her “emotions and all of the heartache and toughness that it was to make the record” was behind her. But the reality was different: “I didn’t even realize that performing these songs would be 10 times harder than writing them. We went on tour for a while and I could barely compose myself up on stage to get through some of these songs … but it’s very cathartic.”

It should come as no surprise that Barthel and Carter are best friends.

They’ve known each other since preschool, and each was involved in music separately before working together on songs. Carter, as her best friend and musical partner, taught Barthel how to produce her own music, write, play the guitar “and just be more creative.” She describes her opportunity to work with her best friend as “fucking incredible.” “We get to enjoy this whirlwind of a life and we have fun together doing it. We know each other so well, we love the same types of music, and we have the same kinds of ideas for what Phantogram will be, and we can’t wait to start writing for the next record.”

Again, the mighty congress of the Atlantic Center for the Arts, the Civic Minded 5 and the Timucua Arts Foundation produces an exceptional presentation. Whenever you see an event bearing the name of any of these arts organizations, it’s worthy of note. But when they work in league, it’s essential.

Prominent avant-garde harpist Zeena Parkins was the latest outreach performance by the great Master Artist-inResidence Program at the ACA. Like fellow harp experimentalist Mary Lattimore, who played Orlando in February with Parquet Courts, Parkins sports a weighty collaborative résumé that includes John Zorn, Yoko Ono, Björk, Thurston Moore and Matmos.

But with a career that reaches back to the ’80s NYC scene, Parkins is even more of an original gangster.

Immediate proof that this wasn’t going to be an ordinary show was when a dozen chairs were placed onstage surrounding the artist – at Parkins’ request – for any audience members game enough. So there I was, stage left.

Though Parkins is famed for her work with electric harp, this performance was acoustic. But she fully embraced the format, wielding its dynamics and plumbing its depths, like when she dipped her fingers in water to make them glide over the strings to whisper a gossamer and otherworldly melody.

Like any true and forward practitioner of new music, wildly progressive concept and technique are Parkins’ calling card, something demonstrated liberally in the compositions she developed while in residency here in Florida. During one piece,

she explored the harp’s anatomy, including its non-musical parts, with a metal pipe brush. In another, her use of flat wooden sticks as bows looked and sounded as if she was sawing down her instrument, like an act of destruction as creation. No, this is not your pearly gates kind of fare. Nothing is easy about this listening. In fact, it’s not even particularly lovely. It can be tense, violent, eviscerating.

Parkins’ work is the kind of truly modern musical language that’s predicated on very little traditional historical reference.

A collision of classical training and vanguard spirit, this is finally a vision and expression of the harp that’s equal to the instrument’s physical command. And it brought down the house.

THE DELTA TROUBADOURS AND MAX NORTON, WILL’S PUB, JULY 12

Although their recordings are decent, it’s the stage performance of Gainesville’s Delta Troubadours that clinches it.

Stout and Southern, this is blues-rock that needs to be experienced live to fully feel how true and contemporary their rock & roll spirit is. The inclusion of an early, pre-arena Kings of Leon cover (“Molly’s Chambers”) in their set says a lot about where they’re coming from. If instead of detouring into glossy indie rock, the Kings had just stayed the course, dug in deep and cranked it up, you’d have the Delta Troubadours.

While Booker smolders with a soulblues-punk inferno, Norton strokes pastoral indie folk with lots of scale, sweep and open sky. Atop the panorama, his voice is wistful and lightly weathered, like a more genteel Will Johnson. Even as leading man, Norton still mans the drums live while also singing and playing guitar. But in addition to his one-man band setup, he was accompanied by a separate bassist.

Consider further Norton’s horizon-shooting musical flourishes and his hollow-body guitar, and the result was much closer to a full band than a scrappy two-piece garage band.

With a view that’s widescreen and immaculate, he’s got the youth and style that could do well in the contemporary folk tide that’s surging right now, but enough taste to not succumb to the more saccharine trappings of the class. Even though he’s trying to rise in the shadow of a meteor, there’s certainly enough substance here for Max Norton to count on his own if given enough light. Anyone lucky enough to attend either the Accidental Music Festival Marathon in May or a solo engagement at the Timucua White House in October of last year knows that St. Petersburg’s Elizabeth Baker has creative momentum on her side. The experimental musician had been focusing on finding new soundworlds from – of all things – an array of children’s toy pianos, but of late she’s been expanding her focus to include new instruments, dance, text and visuals. Baker returns to Orlando this Friday to debut her new multidisciplinary duo project with Erich Bargainer.

Expect a heady mix of movement and visuals augmented by a range of instrumentation that wouldn’t be out of place at an Art Ensemble of Chicago performance in the 1970s. Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 big-budget NC-17 feature about a stripper who dreams of becoming a Vegas showgirl may have bombed at the box office, but it’s certainly given us plenty of lulz over the years. From numerous drinking games to tongue-incheek DVD bonus features that tell viewers how to give a proper lapdance, the film now exists as a bona fide cult classic. So of course the only way to kick the camp factor up any further is for a bunch of drag queens to act it out, right? Written, directed and produced by Emmy-nominated producer Beth Wheatley (Eastsiders) and actor Stephen Guarino (Showtime’s I’m Dying Up Here), Showgirls in Drag had a successful run in L.A. before this production in the creators’ hometown. Somewhat incongruously hailing from Phoenix, Arizona, Kristina Moore’s project Kolezanka whips up an icy tectonic groove that revels in funereal pacing and melancholic wonderment with plenty in common with Molly Nilsson, Tropic of Cancer, Cocteau Twins and Trembling Blue Stars. Too shimmering with aurora borealis colors to be fully goth and too choral and contemplative to fall into the realm of dance music, Kolezanka – the trio of Moore alongside comrades Winter and Ark Calkins (!)

Great Deceivers MUSIC

In the early part of this decade, there were few indie bands as scene-celebrated in Orlando as the Great Deceivers. And then, several years ago, they just up and moved to Chicago – all of them. Ain’t that some shit? Their roots and legacy, however, still linger deep here, so this homecoming is a pretty big deal for anyone with any sense of local rock history. Their dynamic blend of sadcore and math signatures etched their place in the Orlando canon with a sound that was both sensitive and smart. To make it a proper party, a solid support roster has been summoned. For their part, the Deceivers are bringing home a promising tourmate, Chicago post-hardcore act Slow Mass. Completing the bridge are two bright lights of the next rising class of indie-rockers: twee-pop band TV Dinner and melodic punks Crit. “Being able to have an orgasm is about giving yourself over to pleasure in the moment,” Dr. Chivers says. “Research on brain activation during orgasm suggests that a key feature is deactivation in parts of the brain associated with emotion and cognitive control. So difficulties reaching orgasm can arise from distracting, anxiety-provoking thoughts that wiggle their way in when

you’re really aroused, maybe on the edge, but just can’t seem to make it over. They interfere with that deactivation.”

Dr. Chivers’s advice will be familiar to anyone with a daughter under the age of 12: Let it go.

“Let go of working toward vaginal orgasm during sex,” Dr. Chivers advises. “Take vaginal orgasm off the table for at least a month – you’re allowed to do other things and come other ways, just not through vaginal-penile intercourse. This fucking creep needs to be fired – and if the people running the show are made aware of the situation and don’t act, they need to be held accountable. A detailed Facebook post brought to the attention of the local media should do the trick. Hopefully it won’t come to that, THREAT, but let me know if it does.
