Last week we reported on failed game show host-turned-sleazeball prez Donald Trump filing a lawsuit alleging that Facebook violated his First Amendment rights by upholding his deplatforming after he egged on the Capitol riots on Jan. 6. The suit was (naturally) filed in the U.S. District Court of the Southern District of Florida. And even though this is Florida, this lawsuit has the odds stacked against it … for now.

Threading that particularly callous conservative needle, Gov. Ron DeSantis waffled on whether new regulations were needed to stop more tragedies like Surfside (really, Ronnie?). Only two counties in Florida currently have mandatory inspection laws on the books for buildings beyond the building process.

Winter Garden woman takes top prize in Audubon.org photo contest A Winter Garden woman beat out thousands of applicants to win the Audubon Institute’s annual bird photography award.

Across categories for amateurs, professionals and children, more than 8,000 photographs were entered. Robin Ulery walked away with the top prize for non-professional photographers. Ulery captured the above shot of a sandhill crane and its colt while kayaking near her home.

“For three years I’ve watched a pair of sandhill cranes that nest near my house, observing and photographing them from my kayak,” she told Audubon. org. “On a blustery day this spring, I took my camera and paddled out to check on them.”

Ulery said that the rough waters on the morning that this shot was captured on Johns Lake made the unlikely shot feel all the more special.

“Two colts had finally hatched. The wind, though, made for a challenging photo shoot. There was no solid land to anchor to, and I bounced up and down, sometimes missing the birds completely. So I increased my shutter speed and ISO to compensate,” she said. “Capturing this scene under those conditions felt like a once-in-a-lifetime moment.”

California venue boots Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz’s ‘America First’ rally What do a California event venue and most of the GOP have in common? They want nothing to do with Matt Gaetz.

The Florida congressman is searching for a venue in the other Orange County after a hotel there gave Gaetz and Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s “America First” rally the boot. While the Pacific Hills Banquet & Event Center in Laguna Hills initially allowed the booking, they pulled the plug after learning that Gaetz and Taylor-Greene were speaking.

“As soon as we found out who the speakers were

we immediately canceled it,” said manager Javad Mirtavoosi in an interview with the Orange County Register. “We just want to stay clear of that.”

Taylor-Greene’s spokesperson told Business Insider that they are seeking a new location for the July 17 event.

“Although the accounting of the venue cancellation is totally inaccurate, we’re very close to securing a location that will proudly host our America First Rally with Congresswoman Greene and Congressman Gaetz,” they said.

Gaetz is currently under investigation for potential sex trafficking of a minor. His former associate Joel Greenberg recently pleaded guilty to a host of federal charges and agreed to cooperate with the investigation as part of his plea deal. Apparently, the one-time Seminole County politician has a lot to talk about: he asked a judge to move his sentencing date so that he could have more time to snitch. — AG

Orlando rents have seen some of the largest increases in the nation in 2021 The City Beautiful is growing, expanding and welcoming new residents. Unfortunately, that’s brought along a massive increase in the average rent.

Average rents in Orlando have risen 13.3% since the start of 2021, according to a new report from commercial real estate company CoStar. The report found that average monthly rent in Orlando is $1,514 per unit. The vacancy rate has fallen to 5.9%, the lowest since 2018.

Although Orlando isn’t as expensive as other cities, it entered in the top 50 of the least affordable cities in the nation, ranking No. 49 in RealtyHop’s monthly housing affordability index. A recent study found that Orlando rents are less affordable than San Francisco, when the average wage of residents is taken into account. — Nelly Ontiveros Cervantes

Mobile vaccine sites coming to Orlando neighborhoods

The City of Orlando will offer mobile vaccine sites in Orlando neighborhoods to make sure that families are all vaccinated ahead of the start of the school year. The vaccines will be administered at seven City of Orlando neighborhood centers, offering the Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer vaccines. Residents 18 and up can receive the vaccine of their choice.

However, children ages 12-17 must receive the Pfizer vaccine, and only with parental consent.

“It’s critical we continue to make the vaccine available to as many of our residents as possible, especially families, now that teenagers are eligible to receive it,” Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said. “Our neighborhood centers are conveniently located throughout the city and it only takes about 30 minutes to get the vaccine there.”

IMMUNIZED AGAINST REALITY We’ve got 606,000 body bags as evidence that COVID kills. But a third of Americans are choosing to risk death — theirs and others’ — out of belligerent ignorance

When the Earth crosses the

4-degrees-over-baseline warming threshold and “once in a century” hurricanes, heat waves and droughts become routine — killing millions, creating billions of climate refugees, and disrupting geopolitics and global economics in ways we can barely begin to comprehend — it will be in no small part because the wealthiest and most powerful country in the history of the world sat on its hands while the planet burned.

It’s not that we weren’t warned or the evidence wasn’t abundant. Last Friday, Death Valley logged the hottest reliably record-

ed temperature on the planet, ever — 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

But the truth was inconvenient, so we ignored it, pretended the science wasn’t clear, then decided that addressing it was socialism. (Raising taxes, of course, is worse than civilizational ruin.)

We chose stupidity. Not all of us, not even a majority. But a sizable enough minority, empowered by the Constitution’s anti-democratic anachronisms, to prevent us from doing what needed to be done.

The U.S. is hardly the only country to miss its carbon-emissions targets. Still, the Republican Party’s belligerent indifference

— reinforced by a feedback loop of negative polarization and propagandistic media — poses a unique obstacle to global action.

We lose any credibility to nudge China and India to reduce carbon pollution when the party expected to win Congress next year is dominated by climate-change deniers.

The cause isn’t lost, but there’s little reason to hope we’ll stop choosing stupidity anytime soon.

While the world is warming rapidly in geologic terms, sea rise is measured in centimeters, and one summer is only incrementally hotter than the last. Even if we’re cognitively aware of the long-term risk, our amygdalae don’t perceive an immediate threat. That’s part of what’s made convincing people of the urgency of action a tall order.

But only part. After all, we can’t convince many of the same people to protect themselves from a very immediate threat when a proven solution is free and readily available.

The culture war, it turns out, is a hell of a drug.

Only 67% of adults and 55% of Americans age 12 and up have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, placing us behind Canada, the U.K., the U.A.E., Iceland, Singapore, Spain and a bunch of other countries.

Yet even half-assing inoculations has produced incredible results. In six months, we’ve gone from more than 300,000 new cases a day to fewer than 20,000 and saved an estimated 279,000 lives, according to the Commonwealth Fund. About 99.5% of those who’ve died from COVID since January have been unvaccinated.

The vaccine works. We have 159 million examples to show that it’s safe, effective and probably not the Mark of the Beast. On the other hand, COVID kills. We’ve got 606,000 body bags as evidence.

But we’ve hit a vaccine wall. Most of the people who haven’t gotten a shot say they never will. And nearly all of them are Republicans. Of the 10 states with the lowest vaccination rates, all but Georgia backed Donald Trump in a landslide. (The 10 states with the highest vaccination rates were all blowouts for President Biden.)

Hot spots have emerged in low-vaccination areas in Arkansas, Missouri, Texas and Nevada. Cases in Florida jumped 115% over the last two weeks; in Louisiana, 142%; in Alabama, 159%; in Arkansas, 174% — all states below the national vaccination rate.

Nationwide, cases grew by 59%, even as the number of COVID tests declined precipitously. Hospitalizations are beginning to grow, as well.

follow, are the result of deliberate choices.

People chose to risk their lives — chose to die — for nothing.

There’s no rational risk assessment that justifies forgoing the vaccine. Ultimately, this is psychological, rooted in the things that formed Donald Trump’s base — a distrust of institutions, a skepticism of expertise, a tendency toward conspiratorial thinking, a sophomoric interpretation of “liberty” and atavistic tribal loyalty.

As with climate change, negative polarization and propagandistic media reinforce these traits.

Last week, Fox News host Laura Ingraham told her audience that “Biden’s vaccine pushers” are trying to “indoctrinate our children into a dark mindset of anti-Americanism.” Rep. Ronny Jackson, the former White House doctor who proclaimed Donald Trump the healthiest man alive, called mandatory vaccination a “Socialist Marxist Communist” plot. No one has proposed a mandate, though the Biden administration is sending people doorto-door in low-vaccination areas to offer shots. Q-curious Rep. Lauren Boebert called them “Needle Nazis,” and tree-punching seditionist Rep. Madison Cawthorn said the program would lead to confiscation of Bibles and guns.

More troubling than the flapping gums of loudmouths, Tennessee backed off a campaign to encourage youth vaccinations after Republicans accused health officials of “peer pressuring” teenagers, as if a) that’s something adults shouldn’t do when we can save their lives, and b) a Facebook flyer that says, “Give COVID-19 Vaccines a Shot” counts as peer pressure.

That’s what choosing stupidity looks like.

It’s not that they’re stupid, necessarily. It’s that, for reasons bordering on pathological, they’re choosing to behave stupidly, no matter the consequences. The more facts they hear, the more those in authority plead, the more they dig in. They won’t get inoculated because they’ve been immunized against reality.

Here’s the thing: If we can’t defeat the pandemic because of willful ignorance, how can we tackle the much more daunting existential threat that lies ahead?

In a decade or two, the generational churn of Gen Zs replacing Boomers in the electorate will make major climate reforms more likely. But time isn’t a luxury we have.

Every day that passes, the price of inaction rises.

We’ve chosen stupidity. The check is coming due.

At about 8:35 that night, the monitor showed signs that Brooklyn was in trouble, the family alleged in court filings. By 9:57, the family said, the monitor had recorded three decelerations of Brooklyn’s heart rate — indicating the baby was in distress. The nurses overseeing Grant’s delivery failed to appreciate and act on the warnings, Grant’s court papers said.

Grant remembers a hospital staff surrounded and badly distracted by a major, messy renovation. “The hospital was under complete construction,” she said. “It was chaos. And I feel like they shouldn’t be able to have such chaos going on in a hospital when people’s lives are at stake.”

Eighteen hours in, Grant was told she was no longer dilating, her daughter was “sunny side up” — head down, facing inward — and unable to transition through the birth canal, she said. Brooklyn was delivered via an emergency C-section.

But by then, Grant said, Brooklyn had sustained catastrophic neurological damage. Brooklyn had to be revived. She began to have seizures almost immediately.

At some point during labor, Grant said, the hospital and the doctor had thrust a stack of papers in front of her to sign.

Buried among them was an acknowledgement of NICA. Grant said she signed it without understanding what it meant.

Grant did not see her daughter for three hours, she said.

She could not hold her for seven days. While Grant recovered at Wuesthoff, her daughter was driven in a mobile intensive care unit to Florida Hospital, then to Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies in Orlando, the latter better equipped to handle a newborn with extensive neurological damage.

Within an hour or two, Grant said her obstetrician came into her recovery room and apologized. “She did say, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry.’ But that was it.” Attorneys for the hospital declined to comment, adding that, “We can say that the health and well-being of our patients is our top priority.”

In court pleadings, Wuesthoff’s lawyers said the hospital bore no responsibility for any injuries Brooklyn sustained.

“The injuries and damages alleged to be suffered by [Brooklyn] were caused by persons and/or entities over whom [the hospital] had no control or duty to control,” lawyers wrote, specifically mentioning Lim and a nurse, who did not work for the facility.

An attorney representing Lim, who works for the Florida Department of Health, said in an email that his client will not comment “on pending legal matters or individual patient cases.” In court records, the Health Department, speaking for Lim, wrote that “it is not guilty of any negligence which was the legal cause of [Brooklyn’s] injuries.” DOH blamed Brooklyn’s brain damage on “acts or omissions by other persons, independent contractors, corporations, or professional associations or entities other than” the department.

To this day, no one from the hospital has expressed regret, Grant said. As for the doctor’s apology: “It’s not going to give my daughter the life that she deserved.”

Anyway, Grant said, she wants answers, not remorse.

Despite the restrictions placed by the NICA law, Grant began her quest to hold the hospital responsible. She sued the hospital and Lim in 2015. As happens in the NICA process, the judge suspended the lawsuit and required Grant to start all over, this time in front of an administrative judge, the kind that adjudicates NICA cases.

After 10 months, NICA made its standard offer: Drop the litigation. Collect $100,000 now and get Brooklyn lifelong

medical care, provided it is “medically necessary.” The care would mainly come through Medicaid — Florida’s safety-net insurer for indigent and disabled people, which has frequently been accused of relegating patients to an inferior health care system.

NICA says it is responsible for anything Medicaid declines to cover. But Brooklyn was already in Medicaid, and Grant had no desire to stay there. She already had grown weary of Medicaid’s denials of care and equipment — and she wanted her daughter to be treated by “the best” doctors, not just the ones willing to accept Medicaid’s low reimbursement rates.

Grant indicated she would reject the offer. Two months later, Bajalia was brought in to represent NICA’s interests.

That largely involved trying to prove that Brooklyn was intellectually impaired, a finding that would force the family to accept NICA compensation.

Bajalia went to Cambridge to depose four of Brooklyn’s teachers, therapists and aides. They all marveled at Brooklyn’s mental abilities. Bajalia was not having it. He seemed to dismiss their testimony, Grant said, as the magical thinking of supporters who were personally and heavily invested in Brooklyn’s success.

The friction between Bajalia and Brooklyn’s teachers showed in the language they chose, including Bajalia’s use of the word exceptionality, as in “exceptional education.”

“Exceptionality,” Bajalia said, is “just a politically correct way of saying because of her physically handicapped limitations.”

He asked Sheila Burkhardt, Brooklyn’s former speech pathologist: “Now, [Brooklyn] is in a normal classroom, correct?”

“A general education classroom, yes,” Burkhardt answered, emphasizing the words.

“I mean no disrespect,” Bajalia continued, “just because she’s in a normal classroom doesn’t mean that [Brooklyn] is normal, correct?” Normal is another term that parents of children with disabilities and their advocates find objectionable.

He asked about testing. Brooklyn had been tested well over two years before — when she was 35 months old — and that testing showed her significantly behind her peers. Why not judge Brooklyn based upon the tests? he asked.

“It’s considered old data,” Burkhardt said.

“It’s your testimony, as you sit here today, that [Brooklyn] does not have any cognitive or intellectual impairment?”

Bajalia demanded of Rush, Brooklyn’s former teacher.

“I do not see her having any cognitive or intellectual impairment.”

Bajalia then asked Rush about Brooklyn’s physical disabilities: “You didn’t feel the need to test her motor abilities?”

“Obvious,” Rush interrupted. “She’s not going to stand on one foot. I’m not going to ask her to stand on one foot.”

“C

class what perseverance looks like. I am blessed to be her teacher, and her classmates have learned incredible things from her. She is an amazing little girl and I am so proud of her.”

The classroom erupts into applause.

he sparring with Bajalia, unpleasant as it was for Brooklyn’s teachers, helped determine the outcome.

NICA had hired a neurologist, Laufey Sigurdardottir, to review the case, which eventually included the teachers’ observations. Her final report, dated Dec. 29, 2018, concluded that Brooklyn was not substantially mentally impaired.

She was, therefore, ineligible for NICA. An administrative law judge issued a final order dismissing the administrative law case in February 2019.

In an email, NICA administrators said the legal process in Brooklyn’s case worked exactly as intended: Two medical experts reported that Brooklyn met criteria for NICA participation. When Brooklyn’s mother disagreed, Bajalia elicited testimony “for fact-finding purposes, asking questions of each witness to better understand the circumstances of the case.”

“The initial medical review produced a determination that the child met NICA qualifications, information during deposition to explore that determination indicated otherwise, and, as a result, the medical experts changed their determination.”

Although it did not comment specifically on Bajalia, NICA said that the program’s lawyers question family members and other witnesses to gain information only, and that “sometimes those questions challenge the witnesses’ positions in order to draw out a full picture of the case.”

The statement added: “NICA expects all of its attorneys to act in a professional and respectful manner while representing NICA. NICA does not instruct its attorneys to portray children in any specific manner during these depositions, although we certainly hope and expect that children and their families will be treated with courtesy and respect.”

Michelle DeLong, one of Brooklyn’s lawyers, said Bajalia kept insisting that Brooklyn be evaluated by standardized intelligence tests, though Brooklyn was simply not capable of wielding a pencil — let alone filling in little bubbles for answers. “He got caught up in standardized testing to prove she was cognitively impaired.”

As to Bajalia’s language, “‘tone-deaf’ is the right word,” DeLong added. “I think he really believed he was doing a good thing by offering these NICA benefits to Brooklyn, and he just couldn’t understand why the family wouldn’t take them,” she said, adding that the $100,000 NICA proffered fell far short of Brooklyn’s needs. “It was a battle, because he could not put himself in the shoes of the family and understand their perspective,” DeLong said.

After more than two years, Ashley Grant had won the right to pursue her lawsuit, to try to hold to account the medical providers whose negligence she believes harmed her daughter. And though Grant’s exit from NICA was a victory for the 31-year-old, her quest is far from over. Her medical malpractice claim in Brevard County Circuit Court has been set for trial in June 2022.

She’s deeply in debt with Brooklyn’s medical bills, some already in the hands of collectors.

At least, she said, they have a chance. If she had stayed with NICA, “there’d be no justice for Brooklyn.”

The pandemic gave an unex-

pected boost to many forms of entertainment, from online streaming services to old-fashioned board games, but if there’s one element of American consumer culture that really got clobbered by the coronavirus, it’s retail recreation. Shopping malls were already in decline long before last year, but social distancing and convenient Prime delivery pretty much pounded the final nails in the coffin of once-dominant venues like the Fashion Square Mall near my house, which feels more and more like the setting for a George Romero movie every time I pay a visit.

But if there is a Central Florida exception to the mall’s inevitable extinction, it just might be found in Oviedo, where arts entrepreneur James Brendlinger has transformed a strip of fading storefronts into a thriving epicenter of entertainment education. The Penguin Point Productions brand that Brendlinger originally established while teaching at Lake Howell High School has now taken over nearly an entire wing of the Oviedo Mall, providing not only an intimate black box theater but classrooms, dance studios and scenic and costuming rentals, creating a kind of one-stop-shop for East Orlando’s theatrical needs.

A few weeks back, I visited Penguin Point’s facilities for Beth Marshall Presents’ annual Play-in-a-Day presentation, which featured a dance performance choreographed by my wife, along with more participating artists of color than in any prior year. But although the show was enticing, my attention was firmly focused a few doors down, where Brendlinger has teamed up with Cyn Sellards to open Duckie’s Vintage Boutique, the ultimate outlet for making Gen Xers like myself feel both young again and ancient at the same time.

Brendlinger and Sellards’ friendship

goes back many years, but she and I may have known each other even longer, having both worked at Universal’s Terminator 2: 3D attraction during the mid-1990s. We lost touch for a long time, but reconnected a year ago when she was seeking help assembling a Back to the Future-themed surprise birthday party for her son Evan.

I helped hook her up with a tricked-out DeLorean from DJ Elliot Hansen’s Florida Time Machine, plus actors Kyla Swanberg and Rob Sims from Cosfx Studios, and the resulting event went viral online.

Back in our T2/3D days, Sellards was probably the only employee able to make the awful Cyberdyne Security uniforms look stylish, and she’s applied her distinctive eye for fashion and design to managing Duckie’s, a deliriously delightful den of clothing and tchotchkes paying tribute to all decades, but mostly the ’80s and ’90s. From the custom neon signage above the door to the clever window and wall tableaus (curated by Sarah Fanok, of the neighboring Imagine Dance Academy) recreating iconic costumes from films like The Breakfast Club, it’s clear that Duckie’s isn’t merely a store, but a heartfelt love letter to the era of day-glo and acid-washed denim.

Duckie’s inventory of retro styles was originally sourced from Penguin Point’s vast costume shop, which Sellards initially started inventorying early in the shutdown.

“After the pandemic had started, and everything was kind of a little crazy, we were down in [Brendlinger’s] storage area, and he had a lot of excess vintage and things that people had donated. We were just sitting on the couch in storage, and he’s like, ‘I would just love a vintage shop,’” Sellards recalls. “The next thing I knew I was in a room for a few months, just pricing and researching” — until a large storefront propitiously vacated adjacent to Penguin

Point’s ever-expanding domain.

Of course, parachute pants that I probably wore in middle school aren’t the only throwback items Duckie’s offers. Looking for an authentic Lava Lamp? Duckie’s is the only local authorized outlet. Want vinyl rock & roll albums at rock-bottom prices?

(Check out the wall of obscurities by the likes of Don Johnson and the Cabbage Patch Kids.) Extinct media formats like VHS and DVD also live again on Duckie’s back wall. And for more modern music fans, you may even find collectible CDs autographed by Taylor Swift (whose parents hail from Brendlinger’s hometown).

Beyond being a nostalgia-soaked sales boutique, Sellards and Brendlinger hope to build Duckie’s into a social gathering spot where people can play video games (there’s a classic Ms. Pac-Man cocktail table coin-op near the entrance, and old-school consoles in the rear), or catch monthly live performances on a postage-stamp stage that was originally built for the Broadway production of Footloose. “My goal is I want Tiffany to play here at the mall,” Brendlinger says, semi-seriously.

Perhaps the best part of all is that purchases at Duckie’s are actually donations to help fund Penguin Point’s educational mission, which means that this mall minimonopoly’s newest member is helping teach the younger generation in more ways than one.

“I had a little boy come in; he was about 8 years old, and he bought a camcorder from us because he wanted to make a movie about the ’80s on the camcorder,” says Sellards. “And then he bought a little black-and-white TV set that worked, for his props.” Sounds like Gen Z’s Spielberg is already on his way. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

can’t say I’ve ever had a craving for a Chicago-style hot dog, but that’s probably because I’m not from Chicago and didn’t grow up eating them. No, for me, nothing beats the Toronto street dog, with its large yellow bun snuggling a weenie that’s been grilled, scored, then slathered in sweet corn relish, cheddar, hot pepper rings, tomatoes, onions, mustard and ketchup. That’s right, ketchup. It seems folk from the City of Big Shoulders are very much against squirting ketchup on their hot dogs, in favor of dressing the boiled Vienna Beef tubies with relish, pickle spears, sport peppers and celery salt in addition to tomatoes, onions and mustard.

It makes for a perfectly fine hot dog, and the steamed poppy-seed bun lends a nice squishiness, but that neon-green relish? Meh, I could take it or leave it. On a few occasions, I’ve asked the wiener slingers at Hot Dog Heaven and Chubby’s to sub the relish with ketchup. I know, such sacrilege, but what can I say? I’m a food provocateur — I also like pineapple on my pizza, gravy on my French fries and my bagels toasted.

But for the scores of Midwesterners living here who feel otherwise, 2021 has been a pretty good year. For one, Portillo’s — a Chicago institution and a major contributor to heart attacks across the Midwest — opened last month in the tourist sector, while Chicago Dog & Co., the subject of this

week’s review, started serving patrons in Altamonte Springs on April Fool’s Day. It’s run by sisters Monica Walters and Sandra Rivera, who opened the walk-up hot dog stand with their father, Hiram, who always wanted to get into the sausage game. They purchased the building that previously housed the Little Dairy Manor ice cream shop across from St. Andrew’s Tavern and renovated it as a takeout-only operation.

There’s outdoor seating, as well a covered seating area behind the stand, where guests can indulge in a bevy of Chitown faves.

Like I said, I’ve had the Chicago-style dog at both Hot Dog Heaven and Chubby’s (as well as the now-shuttered Bite Hot Dog Co. in Longwood) and the one served here ($4) is arguably the best — the casing on the Vienna Beef frank snaps; the poppy seed bun is perfectly steamed; and the toppings are piled to excess. I managed to splurt sport-pepper juice all over my shirt after the first bite, but it was damn well worth it. I could’ve eaten another, but I had some “Chicago Poutine” ($7) to eat … record scratch. As great as that hot dog was,

this unholy mess of fries, cheese sauce, giardiniera and Italian beef was to poutine as the 1962 Cubs were to baseball. That is, appalling. It’s a muddled goop of discordant flavors that has no business even being called poutine. You thought Chicagoans were serious about their hot dogs? Don’t test a Canadian’s patience with your creative takes on “poutine.”

That same slow-roasted, thinly shaved Italian beef was much better served inside a French roll ($7) along with some spicy giardiniera and a side of dipping jus. Yes, the Italian beef sandwich is solid, as is the smashburger ($5), a new fave of mine with its crispy, charred patty, melted American cheese and sautéed onions between a squishy brioche bun. No gold leaf, no truffles, no pesto mayo — just a simple burger offering the simple pleasures of burgerdom. I tried the Polish sausage ($5) embellished with mustard, onions and relish as well, but after eating it, I felt it needed something.

Now that I’m thinking about it, I realize it needed sport peppers. Yeah, that’s it. And some tomatoes and pickle spears. Celery salt, too. Could it be that I’m craving a ketchupless Chicago-style dog? Yes, I may very well be. A Chicago-style dog … with some real poutine on the side. fkara@orlandoweekly.com

West Orlando’s Trap Hamilton breaks out with the addictive R&B anthem “Trap or Die”

O

n a Monday night in March, Orlando rapper/singer Trap Hamilton was leaving a comedy show at Harry Buffalo on Church Street when a car rolled by, “Trap or Die” floating out its windows. The driver immediately recognized the artist behind the song walking down the street and called out to him.

Hamilton was unfazed. He stopped what he was doing and spent time chatting with the fan. The man was ecstatic.

Despite his emerging local fame, Hamilton stays grounded. “I don’t care about being important,” he says.

Though Hamilton is recognized as one of the foremost representatives of trap-soul in Orlando, the irony is that until a scant few years ago, he didn’t even know he could sing. That deep, warm voice was hiding out, waiting for an opportunity.

“I mean, I always loved R&B music. The type of music I like was dying. All the music was about sex, it was uptempo, the Migos flow. But ’90s R&B music had so much meaning to it. It had powerful messages,” Hamilton says. “I was like, ‘I know I can write this music. Let me try.’”

The “Trap or Die” single was the result of these efforts, a tuneful series of intimate musical snapshots of his day-to-day experiences in the City Beautiful. Hamilton’s lyrics tell the stories of his life, illuminating the beauty and dignity of the ordinary … with no fronting. It was first recorded in 2018 at his favorite studio, 212 Recording in Altamonte Springs, but Hamilton wasn’t happy with his performance on the track. However, he stuck with the mad-scientist engineers at 212 and refined his work, recording and re-recording another seven times until he felt he got it right. “Trap or Die” was finally released in May 2020.

For more than a year, “Trap or Die” has gained momentum organically and become the work Hamilton is best known for, though he has been rapping much longer. His shows — whether at smaller spots like Soundbar or larger venues like the Beacham and Tier, or even stadiums like Auburndale Speedway — often turn into mass “Trap or Die” sing-

alongs. The audience knows every word.

In sixth grade, he and his friend Jarvis rode the bus together to Carver Middle School, wrote verses, and called themselves the Hot Boys.

Hamilton continued rapping and produced upward of 200 songs. He seemingly never stops working at his music. Hamilton easily logs 30 hours in the studio every month. A consummate multitasker, he strings together his day job, family obligations and music like a master weaver.

A silver-tongued rapper with genius-level cadence and intonation that’s completely his own, Hamilton is leaning into neo-soul as he develops his unique singing voice — his performing alias is a nod to fellow crooner Anthony Hamilton. Like that soulful singer, Trap Hamilton stays on top form with every release, self-expressive and untroubled by a desire for fame. And that’s the very thing making him popular.

His latest album, released in April, is the mixtape Trapper No Trapping, (available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music and SoundCloud) with cover art depicting Dora the Explorer being carried away over the shoulder of the notorious, sneaky fox Swiper.

The mixtape is sample-heavy, unabashedly borrowing from Erykah Badu, LL Cool J, SZA, Jaheim and others. Ask why Hamilton would make a record he can’t profit from, especially when he has a deep catalog of unreleased originals. He’ll tell you simply: He did it because it’s fun. And Hamilton is fun.

See him get up and dance in the middle of a restaurant. See him take interviews at a barbershop. See him inhabit any space as if it’s his living room, joyfully unaware of protocol. He has a pied piper quality that’s mesmerizing and magnetic, and this

translates to his music, with addictive flows that demand to be played on repeat.

This playfulness also translates to the stage, where Hamilton engages the audience personally and honestly, making them laugh and sing and smile. There’s not a hint of nerves.

“I’ve never really had stage fright. I feel like if you nervous, you doing something you ain’t got no business doing,” says Hamilton.

“I’m sure about my craft. I’ve been perfecting the music for a long time. So this is why I got a chance to show people what I can do.”

Back in April, I told you about a new release by Auto Chlor on area label Illuminated Paths. Well, the enigmatic and amorphous group of experimentalists led by distinguished former Orlandoan Timothy Murray have just made another major release, probably their grandest and most remarkable to date. While no longer local, Murray’s got deep history and connections to the 407, and this sprawling three-cassette release is testament to that.

Usually, the identities of those involved in Auto Chlor are obscured in a roster of pseudonyms that’s as enigmatic as a Black Moth Super Rainbow lineup (e.g., xx periscope, yy periscope, $, Sonic Broom, Forgot Spoo, O. Chit, EWAP x, CuCu Preserve, Rex Dangerous, lil leaf, the pillow book, L. Lite A.L., etc.). But hidden behind all the arcane aliases on this particular release are lots of noteworthy Orlando freaks, not to mention some other big underground names. So, rather than let this significant fact go unheralded, I used a little bit of ace journalistic persuasion and got them to agree to be identified this once just to underscore how much of a star-studded coup this three-part work is, locally and beyond.

“EMOTIONAL ARSONISTS” I’m a 19-year-old girl who was dumped a few months ago. My partner found out he didn’t like my body when we were having sex for the first time and he told me right after.

We were actually still in bed naked when he told me. He kept cuddling me to make me feel a bit better but it still hurt to hear.

He means a lot to me and we want to continue to be friends. I wish someone had told me that having sex with someone isn’t a guarantee that everything will always work out. I started therapy but I also wanted some advice from you.

Rejection sucks and it always hurts and for that reason we should strive to be as considerate as possible when we have to reject someone. Considerate but clear, considerate but unambiguous, but always considerate. And what this guy did to you — not even letting you get dressed first — was as inconsiderate as possible and you have every right to be angry with him.

If you had to get a therapist after sleeping with someone, it’s a pretty good indication that person should have no place in your life — as a lover or a friend — going forward.

I’ve gone through many variations of relationships, from monogamous to open. My new partner is incredibly smart, open-minded, loving, GGG — all the things, right?

So, I find myself a bit perplexed and troubled by a statement she made.

So why am I writing to you? I have a high sex drive and a history of parental neglect and abuse. I find that I seek validation from women and I have a fairly good idea that it’s due to what I endured from my mother.

We’ve only been seeing each other for a few months since we have been dating and I do love her.

I know people often get caught — even with a hall

pass — and I don’t want to lose her because of this.

I want to make peace with never being with another person or with using the “hall pass” I’ve been given.

How do I do that?

And yet we’re told that monogamy is always easy for people who are emotionally healthy — which is a lie — and then we waste time digging through our childhood histories for something that might explain why this thing that’s supposed to be easy — monogamy — is so hard for us. It’s a waste of time, HALLPASS. You can and should see a therapist to help you work through the trauma you suffered as a child, of course, but don’t waste your time with a therapist who pathologizes your relatively normal desires or seeks to assign blame for them.

So what do you do about your girlfriend? How about you … maybe … talk to her?

Your new girlfriend has been perfectly clear — she doesn’t care if you cheat so long as you use protection and she doesn’t find out about it — but you need additional clarity. If you were to sleep with someone else and she found out about it despite your best efforts to prevent her from finding out about it … what then?

If finding out you used the hall pass she gave you is something she couldn’t forgive, HALLPASS, then you obviously can’t use it without risking the relationship. (You’re right: People get caught.)

Additionally, if that’s really how she feels, then your girlfriend shouldn’t be handing out hall passes in the first place.

But if cheating is something she could tolerate — so long as protection was used and some consideration was shown for her feelings, i.e. you at least attempted to be discreet/keep it from her — then you don’t have to hand in that hall pass.
