Every week between now and the one-year anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shootings, Orlando Weekly will profile a person killed on June 12, 2016. This week: Eddie Justice.

His friends knew him as Brycen Banks.

That’s the nickname Eddie Jamoldroy Justice, 30, created for himself. It makes sense when you learn he was an accountant, and as his friend Guardini Bellefleur described him, a little bougie. He drove a Mercedes, owned a business and lived in a high-rise in downtown Orlando, “in a sky house, like the Jeffersons,” his mother, Wilhelmina Justice, told the Associated Press. A few months ago, he had

met Alejandro Ortega and they fell deeply in love.

Justice also loved Latin Night at Pulse. When the gunman attacked, Justice was there with a group, including his best friend and survivor of the shooting, Demetrice Naulings. Naulings told CBS News that during the shooting, Justice told him, “Take care of me. Please don’t leave me.” He was separated from his friends in the rush to escape the club and was trapped in one of the club’s bathrooms. During that time, he texted his mother, saying, “Mommy I love you.” In his final text, he called the gunman in the bathroom with them “a terror.”

At a vigil for Justice, Naulings reminisced over their last good memory together at Naulings’ birthday party in May. Naulings dyed Justice’s hair blond, and all night, he flaunted his new look.

“We were a battery together,” Naulings says.

“He was the positive, I was the negative. He made everybody smile around him … he was my No. 1 fan.”

Naulings says he’s going to continue talking about Justice because he wants people to know his friend didn’t die in vain.

“I’m speaking for people who won’t have a chance to have a life ever again,” he says between tears. “I’m speaking for my best friend, who was supposed to speak for me.”

It’s been a hell of a few weeks in Orlando, but we’re finally getting back to some sense of normalcy, and that’s partly due to the weirdness happening in the rest of the state.

Take a seat, Florida: The state’s newest restrictions on abortion clinics just can’t catch a break. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unconstitutional HB 2, a Texas law that imposed restrictions on abortion clinics, because it imposed an undue burden on women’s abortion access. Wouldn’t you know it, Florida put a similar law on the books earlier this year called HB 1411. Despite the Sunshine State law’s backers saying it’s super-duper-constitutional, it looks a tad vulnerable from here.

Congratulations, Florida, you keep playing yourself: Then late Thursday, HB 1411 got knocked down again when a federal judge ruled in favor of Planned Parenthood and blocked parts of the law hours before it went into effect. The injunction stops Florida from ending contracts for preventative care like cancer screenings and STD tests with abortion clinics like Planned Parenthood, and blocks a rule requiring state officials to inspect half of patient records at abortion clinics each year. Just witness this legal shade U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle threw at Florida: “The defendants’ assertion that the unconstitutional-conditions doctrine does not apply in this context is incorrect. … No court has embraced the defendants’ position. And there is no logic to it. That a woman has a constitutional right to an abortion does not mean a legislature can impose otherwise-unconstitutional conditions on public funding.”

Orlando’s Pulse keeps beating: We learned more terrifying details about those long hours inside Pulse after the massacre started. Public records show people trapped inside called 911 for help and dispatchers heard screams, moans and final words.

Orlando Police Department records show no shots between around 2:18 a.m. and until the hostages are rescued around 5 a.m., but dispatch records from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office show reports of gunfire at 2:30 a.m. and 2:34 a.m. This is important because it’s the reason OPD gives for switching their response to the emergency from “active shooter” to “gunman with hostages.”

Would you like guac with your sunscreen? The catastrophic blue-green algae bloom currently floating along Florida’s Treasure Coast has been described as “green goop,” “chunky green-pea soup” and this gem from the Miami Herald, “guacamole-thick muck.” The contamination via water releases from Lake Okeechobee angered residents so much it forced Gov. Rick Scott to declare a state of emergency in several counties and the Army Corps of Engineers to reduce the flow of the lake going into the St. Lucie Estuary. Locals blamed Scott, Scott blamed Obama, and the green goop keeps spreading.

Parks and sexreation: Colohatchee Park in Wilton Manors, a gay-friendly city, has a “wild life” problem – and for once in Florida, it’s not a wildlife problem, aka some animal whose habitat we’ve destroyed. The New Times Broward-Palm Beach reports residents are complaining about too much sex in the park, which “has been known as a cruising destination for gay men for years,” according to the weekly newspaper. Residents have proposed creating more interest in the park through a fitness trail and a dog park to attract other activities, while one resident is reportedly all in for the first sex-in-public adult park. mcordeiro@orlandoweekly.com. orlandoweekly.com

wenty-one years ago, Tony Mauss and a group of his male friends went to get tested for HIV. They weren’t scared they had caught the virus. The friends, part of a gay student group at Iowa State University, wanted to be ready for a question American Red Cross workers would ask them when they tried to donate blood in 1995: Are you a man who has had sexual contact with another man, even once, since 1977?

After they all tested negative, the group went to a Red Cross blood drive at a bus on campus. Everything was going well until the workers there asked about their sexual history. Once they answered yes, they’d had sex with other men in the past, the workers looked at them sheepishly, saying, “We’re sorry,” and citing the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s ban on blood donations from men who have sex with men. Mauss and his friends pulled out documentation showing the results of their recent HIV tests.

“We told them, ‘Well, we’ve been to the doctor, we’ve gotten tested, and we’re negative,’” Mauss, then 23, remembers telling the workers. “Can you explain to me why you’re not going to take my blood if I have proof that I’m negative?”

The workers remained unmoved and told them they had to leave. Mauss wasn’t surprised. For the next decades, he would have to explain to family and friends

why he couldn’t give blood. Protesting the ban was a skirmish, not a battle like the ones for equal housing, employment and marriage opportunities for the LGBT community, but it still stung.

Three weeks ago, on June 12, Orlando’s LGBTQ community was struck by one of the worst mass shooting massacres in modern U.S. history when 49 people were killed and 53 injured at the gay nightclub Pulse. After the early-morning bloodshed, people started lining up by the thousands at Orlando’s blood donation centers.

Mauss says in between his emotions of fear and sadness that day, there was a glimmer of hope when a rumor started going around that blood centers had lifted the FDA ban against men who’ve had sex with men in the past year. That hope was quickly shut down by the local center OneBlood, who announced via Twitter, “All FDA guidelines remain in effect for blood donation. There are false reports circulating that FDA rules were being lifted. Not true.”

It didn’t surprise Mauss, but it cut deeply, especially because his blood could have helped a community in Orlando he belongs to.

“I’m in a long-term relationship,” he says. “I’ve tested negative my whole life.

It’s rather silly that if you were going to test the blood anyway, why wouldn’t you take my blood? To realize that these are

my people and that maybe I could help, maybe I could do something tangible, but I can’t give blood because I’m a gay man who happens to be sexually active, is angering.”

In the weeks after the tragedy, the hints of a battle over the ban are present: Lawmakers in Congress and LGBTQ advocates are urging the FDA to change its policy for good, but the agency remains entrenched to “protect the blood supply.”

I

t’s only been seven months since the FDA changed its guidelines on blood donation from men who’ve had sex with other men from a lifetime ban to a 12-months-celibate deferral period.

The original ban started in 1983 in the face of the AIDS crisis, back when many still called it the “gay cancer” and little was known about how the human immunodeficiency virus worked. As mostly gay, bisexual and queer men died, the hysteria surrounding the disease reached an alltime high because of a belief that the virus could be spread by casual contact.

“Mothers didn’t want me picking up their babies,” author Edmund White, a gay man who’s had HIV since 1985, told CNN in 2011. “People didn’t want to kiss you on the cheek. People certainly didn’t want to have sex with you, especially other gay people. It was very isolating and demeaning. That was a long battle.”

The FDA ruling indefinitely banned queer men because “of the strong clustering of AIDS illness and the subsequent discovery of high rates of HIV infection in that population,” according to the agency.

Thousands of recipients of donated blood had already become infected with HIV.

As scientists learned more about the virus, they found heterosexual people and children could get HIV, and that it was transmitted through blood, semen and pre-seminal fluids, vaginal fluids, rectal fluids and breast milk. Advanced research also helped develop medication to suppress the virus, prevent transmission and help HIVpositive patients lead healthy lives.

Tests also became much more advanced at screening HIV in donated blood, and it’s now a standard practice to test all blood for HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis and the West Nile Virus. The New York Times reports tests can screen donated blood for the virus “in as little as nine days after the donor has been infected.” That “window period” of nine days means donated blood could falsely test negative for HIV if the donor were infected and gave blood within the

same nine days, which is the FDA’s argument for continuing several bans.

The FDA requires blood centers to ask dozens of questions regarding eligibility and defers several populations, including: sex workers, with a permanent ban; injection drug users, with a permanent ban; people who have recently acquired a tattoo or piercing, with a 12-month deferral; people who’ve completed treatment for syphilis or gonorrhea, with a 12-month deferral; and women who’ve had sex with queer men, with a 12-month deferral.

The agency says the use of deferral questions, donor education material and HIV donor testing has reduced the risk of HIV transmission through donated blood from one in 2,500 units before standard testing to a current estimated risk of about 1 in 1.47 million transfusions.

“In order to best protect the blood supply in the U.S., the FDA based the December 2015 policy update on what we know about HIV epidemiology in the U.S. today,” says FDA spokesperson Tara Goodin in an email. “Previously, there was not enough scientific evidence to support a change in blood donation policy for men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States. The deferral policy is a behavior-based policy, not one based upon sexual orientation. Current epidemiology shows that a history of male-to-male sexual contact was associated with a 62-fold increased risk for being HIV-positive, whereas the increase in risk for a history of multiple sexual partners of the opposite sex in the last year was 2.3-fold.”

LGBTQ advocates argue the 12-month deferral against queer men is discriminatory because straight couples can transmit the virus just as easily, and HIV testing is advanced enough nowadays to easily screen for the virus.

“The policy turns away good donors with no regard to their sexual behaviors,” Seminole State College student Blake Lynch told Orlando Weekly in 2013.

“We need blood so bad that they’re let-

ting 16-year-olds donate.” In March of that year, Lynch launched a campaign, Banned4Life, hoping to collect 100,000 signatures in order to convince the FDA to lift the ban or at least reconsider the parameters.

In June 2013, the American Medical Association rebuked the FDA ban, saying, “The ban on blood donation for men who have sex with men is discriminatory and not based on sound science.” And in November 2014, upon hearing of the impending policy change, Banned4Life posted on its Facebook page, “One step forward today! The Dept. of HHS wants to recommend a one year deferral instead of a lifetime deferral for MSM. We applaud the progress, but are still disappointed that they are focusing on sexual orientation instead of individual sexual behavior.”

On June 15, 2016, Lynch, now a registered nurse, penned an op-ed for the New York Times headlined “I Am a Gay Man From Orlando. Why Can’t I Donate Blood?”; he pointed out that “gay men like me would like the opportunity to give our much-needed, healthy blood to those who are fighting for their lives right now at Orlando Regional Medical Center.”

He also stated, “When I called OneBlood, the blood center that serves the Orlando area, I learned that it still vets donors according to the FDA’s old, more stringent guidelines while it works to update its own policy.”

On the day of the Pulse shootings in Orlando, even queer men who had not had sex within the past year were still turned away by the local OneBlood center. OneBlood spokesman Pat Michaels told the Washington Post that OneBlood had not updated its system to allow queer men who had been celibate within the past year to donate, but that it would be updated later this year. Orlando Weekly reached out repeatedly to OneBlood, but did not receive further comment.

LifeSouth Community Blood Centers, which supplies blood to more than 100 hospitals in Florida, Georgia and Alabama, was planning to update its guidelines regarding queer men later this summer, but after seeing the outpouring of people who wanted to help on June 12, they updated their guidelines that same day, says Gary Kirkland, a spokesperson for the organization.

The organization had already done much of the background work to update quickly, such as training their staff and changing information on the automated system. Soon, they’ll have to update their systems again to screen for the Zika virus.

“Blood donation is highly regulated by the FDA, and if you’re not following the rules, you’re not going to be in business,”

look at the science that shows, in fact, that there’s nothing inherently different about the blood of gay or bisexual Americans.”

Grayson, who represents Orlando, called donating blood after a tragedy a form of solidarity and citizenship.

“We can’t say that we have first-class citizens and second-class citizens,” he says. “We can’t say some people can give blood and other people can’t based upon their sexual orientation or anything like that. … In one location, we had two blocks that had to be cordoned off because the line was that long – a line two blocks long in the rain of people anxious to give blood that day. And that’s a recognition of the impulse we all feel in times of tragedy to help, and no one should be turned away in those kinds of circumstances.”

Bob Poe, a candidate for Florida’s 10th Congressional District who recently came out as HIV-positive, says aside from stigmatizing all LGBTQ people, the deferrals contribute to the stigma of people living with HIV. (Even today, some people still don’t realize that carrying the virus is not the same as having AIDS.) “It’s time to allow people who are able to make their contribution in society,” he says. “Lifting the ban doesn’t affect me personally, but I know many people who really wanted to do their part that day and couldn’t, but brought water and food to people instead. There’s absolutely no reason to continue this ban, because all it does is limit the supply and stigmatize LGBTQ people.”

Mauss says he hopes people will recognize the deferral as a policy that needs to be challenged as a discriminatory practice.

“I’ve had enough time to come to terms with it, and I understand why it was initially enacted because people were terrified,” he says. “But I don’t understand why it’s still there in 2016.”

Kirkland says. “We were facing 50 to 100 donors that day, so we were able to make that change quickly. It was not as daunting as it would have been for OneBlood to try to make those changes as people lined up on the streets.”

Kirkland says every week, they have a couple of donors they have to call back and inform them that their blood tested positive on their screening tests for HIV and they should be tested.

“If someone is sick, they need to know,” he says. “The whole purpose of the questionnaire is it’s the first line of defense in keeping the blood safe.”

O

pponents of the deferral against queer men point to a study published in the Columbia Medical Review last year that says the updated policy “is as discriminatory as the lifetime ban and will not significantly increase the number of eligible donors. A shift away from a categorical and unnecessary ban towards a systematic and scientifically based series of tests and screenings that focus on indicators of risky sex would grow America’s pool of blood donors without increasing the risk of transfusionrelated transmission of HIV.” On a call last week with U.S. Reps.

Alan Grayson, D-Florida, and Jared Polis, D-Colorado, along with the National Gay Blood Drive, the advocates argued the deferral should be based on sexual behavior, not on sexual orientation, because it turns away millions of potential donors.

“The gender of one’s partner has nothing to do with whether one is engaged in risky behavior or not,” says Polis, the first openly gay parent in Congress. “It’s high time for this outdated and discriminatory policy to end, and I’m confident with such broad-spread support among both the American public as well as members of Congress, the FDA will be moved to orlandoweekly.com

ttending a Winter Park City Commission meeting can be an interesting experience, as just about anything can become a heated controversy in this city – like building a new and improved library or preserving historically significant buildings. Adding to the push-pull incongruity, artist Erik Groff is exhibiting his work this summer on the second floor in the Commission chambers and an adjoining meeting room.

“Inwardly, I’m smiling at the irony. My work used to be a matter for the police, and now I’m in the hallowed chambers of a city hall,” Groff said to us at the opening reception.

Groff is an Orlando-born artist who moved to Oakland, California, and made a name for himself in street art. Not graffiti, exactly; more like street sculpture.

“We typically harvested cardboard and wood, and my crew threw them up around Berkeley and Oakland for years,” he says, reminiscing about California, where he occupied a twilight zone between graffiti and gallery. Not quite whimsical, not quite rude, his cityscapes were stuff of urban legend in the Bay Area, appearing overnight in alleys and on bridges, lasting till the rain took them. Leftover house paint gave him few choices of colors, but the work somehow made the city look happy.

He jumped the curb into the gallery in California, starring in a few underground YouTube videos. (Look him up to check out those Oakland cityscapes; they’re great.)

He’s since relocated to Englewood, an artist’s colony on Florida’s west coast, with his wife and daughter. His work appears in the City Hall gallery courtesy of the Winter Park Public Art Advisory Board.

After his return to Florida several years ago, Groff’s style is sharp as ever, and some of his best work harks back to his roughand-tumble days in the Berkeley scene.

“At first it was just an impression of what I saw out of my studio window in Oakland,” Groff says. “The buildings marched down the hill in such a great rhythm.” Colorful, animated architecture pops off the wall in new assemblages, making a city look like a rock concert mob.

Groff paints on canvas as well: Dreamlike heavy black lines wander through amorphous fields of amber and teal, echoing Paul Klee’s best and most enigmatic expressionism. Multidimensional faces partly emerge from the trancelike geometry in his paintings, which are a bit freer in spirit than his muscular cityscapes. In many of his pieces, comic, anthropomorphic windows, zany trains and airplanes, and hints of largerscale dragons and other mythical creatures animate the space.

“These are satisfying to me,” he declares.

Perhaps they’ll calm tempers in the Chambers and soothe the city’s fractious leadership.

of the past few weeks, Orlando’s arts community has shown remarkable tenacity with an outpouring of creative energy that proves “the show must go on” isn’t merely a cliché.

One of my privileges as a theater critic is welcoming new performance troupes to town, and it was sadly symbolic of the “circle of life” that Daystar Studio Productions opened Spring Awakening, their debut offering in Central Florida, on June 19, exactly one week after the Pulse shootings.

Turner, strong performances from Lyle Moon and Wendy Starkand (alternating with Sara Jones) as the adult characters, and a marquee venue in the Dr. Phillips Center’s Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater. But despite the best efforts of cast and crew, the performance I attended ultimately fell flat both creatively and financially (a guess based on the rows of empty seats around me).

The show closed before a review could be printed, but since Daystar plans to continue producing shows in town, I offer up these constructive criticisms as a housewarming gift to them, and as a cautionary tale to other theater troupes starting up: ✓ RESEARCH YOUR AUDIENCE If your title has been presented locally multiple times in recent memory (in fact, I wrote a column in 2011 about attending two different productions of Spring Awakening on the same day, and there’ve been others since then), you’re unlikely to draw as much attention as you would with an underproduced property. Likewise, the average going rate for Orlando theater tickets is $10-$20 for emerging companies, and $25-

Spring Awakening $50 for top established troupes. If you’re charging up to $90 and you’re not an Equity tour, you’re pricing yourself out of this market. Finally: Shows open on Thursdays or Fridays for a reason; an eight-day run starting on a Sunday leaves little time for published reviews, and less to build word of mouth.

✓ EVERY ACTION HAS A REACTION When mounting a well-known show, you may choose to borrow certain staging elements from Broadway (as Daystar did, without giving credit to Michael Mayer or Bill T. Jones), but you must understand their original intent before adapting them. If a character originally sang crouching because he was clinging to a microphone stand, but you are using headset mics instead, don’t just leave the actor squatting on stage.

“W

e’ve run out of all the ingredients to make an Old Fashioned” is not what one expects to hear inside a swish restaurant on a Friday night at 8:45 p.m.

Nor does one expect to see a lemon slice supplant an orange peel in one’s Negroni because “we’ve run out of oranges.” But I’m not one to espouse blasé defeatism when confronted by the irksomely unexpected.

Maybe it was because the members of this family-run operation were just so eager for patrons to view their restaurant favorably that it was hard not to cut them some slack; maybe it was the mollifying color of our server’s nail polish. Or maybe it was both.

Fact is, Oudom Thai & Sushi, the latest in a string of boîtes to occupy the ground floor of the Sanctuary condominium building downtown, can’t rely on history’s munificence to make a successful run; nor can it hope for longevity based on a plucky dispo-

sition and an outpost in DeLand. The most common refrain heard at the table during our dinner was, “It’s OK,” so becoming a prosperous and thriving operation may be an arduous task. The good news is that Thai cuisine is a populist one, and it’s a draw even when it’s just OK, like it was on this Friday night.

No doubt it’s still a beautiful space, only now it’s a beautiful space in which to consume ho-hum chicken-and-veg spring rolls ($3.99), flavorless octopus sashimi ($4.99) and soggy eggplant tempura ($6.99). Or one of the many “OK” dishes, like straightahead chicken panang curry ($13.99) – made notable by a generous inclusion of snow peas and the fact that it was served in a fancy bowl. Pad Thai ($11.99), described as “boring” by one of my guests, didn’t strike the rest of us quite as harshly, but I’d be hard-pressed to find a compelling reason to order it again.

Breaking our meal’s monotony was the whole snapper ($19.99), dramatically presented as is the norm, and deep fried in a fine “triple flavor” sauce in all its sweet,

sour and spicy glory, as is also the norm.

Seeing three different variations of boneless duck dishes on the menu was a bit of a surprise (though not nearly as surprising as seeing beef tartare listed on there as well).

After much discussion, the table’s consensus was on a crispy tempura-battered duck in panang curry ($18.99). The ducky duck didn’t lose any of its crisp under the heavy saucing and, dare I say, even performed some flavor acrobatics for our collective palates.

What Oudom needs to work on are the lingering effects of its dishes – making the effects less ephemeral and more lasting. It’s what the everyday restaurant-goer seeks.

Sending a paying guest off with a dessert of mango sticky rice ($8), not quite comprising that ideal textural balance between dense-creamy-gluey-chewy, isn’t the way to go about it. Neither is serving a too-sweet apple pie ($8) with what we’re sure was Cool Whip on top.

No, what made an impression instead was the sudden change in lighting that suddenly illuminated the dining room in different colors like a scene out of 2001: A Space Odyssey. A button was pressed, but a HAL 9000-like hiccup in the controls caused a mesmerizing malfunction.

This conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.

you end with a limey beer chaser. In this Remix, that means the drink gets stronger as you sip, not weaker – especially since there’s no ice diluting it. As for the mechanics of it, Neil DeGrasse Tyson could probably explain better than I, but it’s got something to do with Bernoulli’s principle or Pascal’s law or hydrostatic pressure or fluid dynamics or something. Leave me alone, science nerds.

Unlike a restaurant that sells Mexican Bulldogs, your kitchen will require very little investment in the way of special equipment for this Remix, and no glassware at all. All you need is an assortment of canned mixers (the short 6- or 8-ounce cans are best), a handful of mini airplane bottles of your favorite liquors, straws (full-length ones, not short) and a churchkey can opener (see photo above).

Back in the day before pop tabs, beer drinkers used the pointy end to “pop a top�; you might still use a churchkey now to get at Hershey’s syrup or any other canned liquid.

In the case of this drink, you’re going to use it to make an extra hole in your mixer can, in which you’ll insert a mini liquor bottle. Et voila, a magically self-mixing, stronger-asyou-sip summer cocktail! jyoung@orlandoweekly.com

Now use the churchkey to punch at least one and as many as three extra holes on the side opposite the standard opening.** In one smooth movement, invert the bottle over the can and jam it into the extra opening you made. (Use the straw that you already inserted to deal with the little bit of overflow that will fizz out.) Enjoy! * The choices are limited only by the selection at your liquor and grocery stores, but some of our favorite combos were: lime-basil vodka with a short can of lime tonic, Sailor Jerry’s rum with Barritt’s ginger beer, and the classic Jack and Coke. Structural challenges were encountered when attempting to insert a Patrón Silver mini into a San Pellegrino grapefruit soda; the Patrón’s flared lip necessitated four punches and a pretty hard push. Basic conclusion: The shorter the can, the longer the neck of the mini, the better the drink. With a shorter bottle or a taller can, the meeting point between the two liquid levels is broken earlier, so you miss out on the fun of the slowly changing mix. ** MASSIVE MASSIVE DISCLAIMER: There WILL be sharp metal edges so DO NOT put your mouth on the can. USE A STRAW. And pay attention while you’re making the extra hole – if you see metal shards drop into the can or something, don’t drink it, dummy.

alling it a cocktail may be a stretch, but this month’s Remix candidate is definitely a classic. It may not meet the standards of propriety and taste of some of our more time-honored and traditional drinks – the Manhattan, the Sazerac – but it’s undeniable summer fun wrapped up in a physics demonstration.

The Mexican Bulldog is called by many other names: Corona-rita, cervezarita, margarona – even, in New Mexico, a Lava Lamp (which is no more random than “bulldog,�

I guess). It’s a margarita (usually a slushy frozen one) with a Corona (sometimes a pony, but usually a full-size bottle) jammed upside-down into the glass. Obviously this requires special barware, either a really big glass with a hollow stem or a plastic holder that clips onto the glass and stabilizes the beer bottle. Like that tiki-bar classic the Volcano Bowl, the Bulldog falls into a category of cocktails we might classify as thrill rides: a weird visual appeal plus the ability to get you smashed fast.

The physics part? The beer in a Bulldog (or the liquor in our Remixed Bulldog) seeps slowly into the drink – not all at once, but increasingly as the margarita (or mixer) level goes down. In a Bulldog, that means

The Peppy Bistro International fare awaits the College Park restaurant-goer cool enough to step into this friendly bistro standing where one of the city’s better Mexican restaurants once stood.

Mexican dishes comprise but a small part of a menu dominated by Italian and Spanish classics – a fat meatball fashioned from ground beef and short rib; a seafood paella we can’t wholly recommend on account of encountering some broken mussel shells; and lamb chops over couscous. Verde Cantina Thornton Park spot promises more than Tex-Mex, but fails to deliver. A pedestrian tilapia ceviche hardly qualifies as “Mexican soul food” and neither does an oversalted burger fashioned from beef and chorizo. The chunky guac might please, so long as fresh tomatoes are used, but one thing is certain – your tacos will quickly disintegrate into a fattoush of mush. Zora Grille Kebabs done in the Persian style are the real draw to this Iranian eatery. While spices and seasonings need tinkering, the meats are splendidly succulent. Saffron-fragrant rice is an essential accompaniment to kebabs and heady stews like the khoresht gheymeh – yellow lentils, Angus chuck, diced potatoes and dried lime. Another essential component of the meal: Persian tea served with dates.

tart with a tired premise, throw in a sophomoric script, add a novice director, simmer in juvenile juices for 98 minutes, and you have the half-baked recipe for Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, one of the worst films of the year.

Brothers Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave (Zac Efron) ruin every family gathering.

So when it’s time to plan their sister’s Hawaiian wedding, their parents insist they bring smart, responsible dates who will keep them from mischief.

“When are the two of you going to grow up?” their mom asks. “We are not party ruiners; we’re party creators,” the boys reply.

Still, they want to please their parents, so they place an ad online to find the perfect girls. After the ad goes viral, they appear on The Wendy Williams Show – yes, really – to discuss their dateless predicament.

But they still can’t find the right matches until Alice (Anna Kendrick) and Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza) randomly arrive. What they don’t know until it’s too late is that the girls staged the meeting and they aren’t the smart, wholesome ladies they appear.

Instead, they are the female equivalent of Mike and Dave. And there you have the lone intriguing aspect of the film – an aspect that’s never fully explored amid the embarrassingly unfunny and infantile humor, nonsensical plot and haphazard structure.

More a collection of overly long SNL skits than a movie, Mike and Dave seems to be missing scenes. Characters appear as paper cut-outs, and motivations make no sense.

Why do the women even want to go to Hawaii? They don’t like their dates and have

little interest in anything except drinking and doing drugs. If this were clever farce, it would be forgivable. But newbie director Jake Szymanski and writers Andrew Cohen and Brendan O’Brien don’t seem to grasp the essence of farce. This is more fart: curse words and sex jokes thrown at the screen to see what will stick, all in an effort to pump up a lame PG flick into an R-rated romp.

And when it tries to turn sweet and serious, it sinks into cringe-worthiness.

I feel saddest for Kendrick. Though she’s the best of the leads, her career has gone from Up in the Air to up in smoke. (The Cheech and Chong reference is intentional, considering Kendrick’s character’s stoner sensibility.) Also worse off for their involvement with this film are Plaza, Efron and Stephen Root (who plays the father but is better known for his scene-stealing roles in Coen brothers films). Devine, however, doesn’t take a cinematic step down as much as a sideways shuffle along his road to eventual obscurity.

Only Sugar Lyn Beard, as the bride, rises from this muck smelling sweet. She’s the best and funniest thanks to her effervescence and sight gags, but even she is mostly lost in a film that has not one genuine or sincere moment.

“You’re better than this,” Tatiana tells Alice. Indeed, we are all better than this – not just the actors who portray vapid, horrible people, but also we, the audience, who are stupider for having watched them.

The Secret Life of Pets One of the most dosh. British title of the inevitable sequel: Pets short-sighted corporate decisions I’ve ever witnessed was when Universal Orlando replaced its joyous, timeless Hanna-Barbera ride with a Jimmy Neutron attraction. As Mitch Hedberg would have said, “Jimmy Neutron? Yeah, I remember that … day.” Some franchises have legs and some just don’t, so it’s fortunate that Illumination Entertainment came along with its Despicable Me/Minions juggernaut, which I’ll wager is going to be a much longer-lived occupier of that old Hanna-Barbera space than poor Jimmy was. And Universal seems to know it, having reportedly set aside even more room for an attraction based on Illumination’s new The Secret Life of Pets.

Good call. Not only do they have Illumination’s sterling track record to rely on, but also the new movie’s can’t-miss premise: The humans step aside momentarily so we can get an unvarnished portrait of what our fur babies do all day. Netflix and rut? No, silly: Stab each other in the back and then rue the consequences.

You know, just like the Republican National Committee.

I guess we’ll never know if Uni left some kibble on the table by opening the movie after the mammoth July 4th weekend – although given the staying power Finding Dory has exhibited, it might be just as well. Even wiser in retrospect was the decision to open Pets last weekend in the U.K., where is scored all kinds of 11th-hour EU 24

Swiss Army Man Buddy picture, meet body picture. In a pitch that puts the “high” in high concept, a castaway played by Paul Dano staves off his loneliness by sharing good times with a magical corpse (Daniel Radcliffe) that washes ashore at exactly the right time. Personally, I’ve always considered the original American Werewolf in London the high bar for banter between a living dude and his cadaverous pal, but I’m always open to a good paradigm shift.

And so, it appears, are the festival audiences and critics who have pronounced Swiss Army Man one of the most engagingly goofy headscratchers in many a moon.

A Rolling Stone cover story once declared that the original Guns ’N Roses could veer from terrible to brilliant in the course of a typical set – and sometimes during a single song. A similar herky-jerkiness is being attributed to Swiss Army Man by reviewers – as well as the ability to strike different members of the same audience as a unique work of genius and one of the worst pictures ever made. If you aren’t enticed by the prospect of that sort of parking-lot debate, I don’t know what to tell you, except maybe to dangle the carrot that the titular corpse is also gifted with propulsive flatulence. Hey, Discovery Channel: I think you just booked the first night of Shart Week. (R)

ock & roll is best served raw. And the Golden Pelicans are the rawest there is. They’ve been bashing it out since 2011, putting out a consistent string of 7-inches and LPs, many self-released on drummer Rich Evans’ Total Punk label, and booking several American tours and, recently, a tryst through Europe. And they’re flexed for 2016: two 45s and a tour booked for August.

Evans says of their upcoming 7-inch on Third Man Records, “They asked us to come play, and I knew about their live series. … They said we’d talk about [a release] after the show.” They didn’t. Then, about a month ago, the Pelicans received an email with a set of contract agreements.

They handled it, and after a bit more silence across the wires came a set of four rough mixes. Recorded March 25, 2016, these are four of the band’s strongest cuts, their raw power unhampered by studio perfection and spiced up with intermittent, abrasive banter.

Third Man is Jack White’s record label and mega-studio based in Nashville. Of the studio, Evans jokes, “There was as many

sound guys as there was us. If we’d gotten in a fight, it would have been a fair fight.

They had three different boards. There were two guys up top … one guy, we had no idea where he was, just this voice we would hear, and another guy in the booth next to us.”

Vocalist Eric Grincewicz adds, “It was just like Europe. It’s amazing. The hospitality there was incredible.” Evans continues, “On top of the way they treat you, the place was just fucking incredible. It’s a wonderland.” Bassist Sammy Meneses interjects a crucial detail: “There’s taxidermy.”

Grincewicz expands on the point: “Yeah.

Dead animals everywhere.” Evans takes up the thread: “Everyone that works there is dressed in black suits with yellow ties.

It’s very old-school. Jack White’s office looks like a classic detective office – cool blinds and a brick wall on the other side.

It’s elevated above everything else.” (We’re picturing something between the Maltese Falcon and Inspector Gadget. Just a hunch.

Fans can expect the Third Man 7-inch to be available within the three to six months.

Next on the Golden Pelicans’ slate is a 7-inch on Wild Wax records.

“It’s the guys that booked our European tour. They had us go into this really nice studio in Germany. They took us to Hamburg. Two of the tracks [recorded in that session] are on there,” Evans says. “It

should be out in time for our tour.” The European tour occurred in August of 2015, spanning Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden.

The upcoming tour is a West Coast run.

“It starts in Vancouver and ends in Tijuana. So it’s really a North American tour,” deadpans Evans through some giggling. Mexico’s a first: “We went and hung out in Mexico on tour once, but we never played there.”

“The poster [for Tijuana] looks pretty ridiculous. So far I just see our name. I’m kinda thinking it’s just us.” They commiserate over the possibility of playing for an hour. Grincewicz explains, “You show up and they make you play for an hour. We’ve got an hour. I don’t like doing an hour” – he drags the words out, sounding exhausted – “I like about 25 minutes.” When you cut all the fat from a song, as the Pelicans do live, leaving just the muscle, it clocks in pretty brief. Some bands genuinely don’t get off on hearing themselves fart.

“We’re playing a festival in Seattle, Pizza Fest. Our Oakland and San Francisco shows are pretty awesome. Oakland is with Personal and the Pizzas and Midnight Snaxx. I tried to get as many Total Punk bands on to the shows as possible. Then San Francisco is with Violence Creeps and Life Stinks, who I’ve done records for,” finishes Evans.

The Wildtones at Will’s Lil’ Tiki Party

Will’s Lil’ Tiki Party (June 26) was the latest themed experiment by the inventive party-makers at Will’s Pub. For this, the venue was transformed in one of the most complete atmosphere takeovers I’ve ever seen here. From the poke food truck outside to the great vintage Hawaiian visuals to all the bamboo, fronds and coconuts covering the walls, ceiling and even the sound booth, it was total immersion. And people answered the call, matching the spirit by turning out in number and wearing enough aloha patterns to permanently damage my retinas.

It would hardly be a Will’s event without live music. The one band I hadn’t encountered before was new Orlando group the Uke-A-Ladies, a clever name that pretty much spells out their deal. With the setup of an all-female ukulele trio, I know what you’re thinking: It’s gonna be twee. And it sometimes was. But while so many like them would’ve gladly settled for the lovely conceit of a cutie-pie act, the Uke-A-Ladies are actually much more.

They’re not a novelty act that simply tickles your fancy and rots your teeth. Any band with three members who are solid players, good singers and great harmonizers is something to be taken with some gravity, something you’ll do once you hear their originals and a gripping rendition of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene.”

I’m talking about a tiki party in the Will’s Pub universe, which means typical beach party things like pool inflatables among the crowd resulted in situations that went from wild to violent. This was neither a basic show nor a mere social. It was an event. Summer’s officially here, party people. God help us all.

THE BEAT

I frequently rue the absence of a real honky-tonk in the area, but the same could almost be said for a real blues club.

Thanks to a story we ran two years ago (“King Snake Records, back porch jams, memories of the chitlin’ circuit”), I’d heard about the blues jams at the Alley in Sanford. As the article uncovers, Sanford packs some musical heritage that, though little-known nowadays, is deep as part of the legendary and crucial chitlin’ circuit.

Little of that tradition exists around there any more, at least not with any significant profile. But perhaps some vestige could be seen here at the last Sanford club (and likely beyond for quite a distance) dedicated to the blues.

I wanted to check the joint’s real everyday pulse, to see if it had any connection

whatsoever to that communal music tradition. So I dove into one of the several jams (June 29) that the Alley holds every single week rather than a feature show. Even though it’s open, this is a group jam session and not a basic open mic. And there were some seasoned, real-deal players in the mix so skilled that the only tells that some were playing together for the first time were the introductory post-song handshakes. Another nice thing going on here was that this night’s cast was notably diverse in generation, gender and color.

That’s sweet relief for anyone who’s seen too many old white dudes turn the blues into beige.

What looked like a small crowd was actually an astonishing amount of participants since most would at some point in the night take a stab at the stage. In the two hours I was there, I saw at least three full bands’ worth of players perform.

These were blues people here. It was in the air. Around the campfire of this open stage were community and communion.

The blues still lives in this house.

Sanford is currently undergoing its biggest renaissance in memory with lots of new investment. But this tectonic shift is yet another crack for some important history to slip through. That’s why a bastion like the Alley and nights like these blues jams are so essential to the full cultural stock of this burgeoning little city.

The brutally honest singer-songwriter found her way to fame through YouTube covers and SoundCloud originals, like many other artists these days, but she has quickly upgraded from her role as the opening act for Imagine Dragons and the Weeknd to headlining her very own tour. Halsey’s forte is songs about sadness and sex; for a measly $28 bucks, the show will give you more of an emotional roller coaster ride than a cheap bottle of wine. Her full-length debut album, Badlands, stood at spot No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 and, even more impressively, Halsey guested on Bieber’s most recent album, Purpose. This girl ain’t an amateur. – Bridgette Norris

Whether it’s a testament to the good-naturedness of Orlandoans or just our balmy climes, we seem to have impressed a few extremely talented country singers in the past few years, judging by the frequency that they squeeze Orlando into their tour schedules. While folk-punk Austin Lucas (pictured) may have started the trend a few years ago before his sound matured into something more classically country (pronounced “Americana” if you’re a marketing executive), Knoxville, Tennessee’s Matt Woods has picked up the slack in recent years. Woods even likes us so much that he filmed a music video inside the Bull & Bush – starring Alex Luchun as the saddest clown in the history of sad clowns – and poached Larry Fulford to be his drummer for two albums and more than a few tours. These guys tend to have a devoted, harddrinking, sing-along audience at their Orlando shows, and it may have something to do with the fact that the fandom is mutual. – Thaddeus McCollum

Orlando Pride vs. Boston Breakers It’s been a rough month since June 12, and there’s still a lot of things we might never understand, but for those of you who’ve been shut up inside your house, perhaps it’s time to get back out there. There’s no better opportunity than the Orlando Pride’s home game against the Boston Breakers this weekend at Camping World Stadium (RIP Citrus Bowl). Yes, the 2-1 loss to the Portland Thorns last week was a blow, but it’s nothing Pride captain Alex Morgan and the rest of this all-women team can’t move past and channel their frustration into a victory over Boston. There’s no better marketing tool than nostalgia – just ask Donald Trump – and that goes doubly in the music business (see the recent trend of bands touring and playing their fans’ favorite albums front-to-back). But for radio gods of yesteryear who maybe only had a handful of hits in heavy rotation, Art Alexakis of Everclear (pictured) has put together this package tour every summer for the past few years. The concept is simple: all the songs you remember from these bands packed into short sets with no suffering through “Here’s another one from our new album.” Everclear, whose “Santa Monica” probably still gets stuck in your head every now and then for no discernible reason, are joined by underrated Detroit post-grungists Sponge, reality TV staple Mark McGrath’s band, Sugar Ray, and Lit, who we were excited about until we remembered that the band that did “Steal My Sunshine” was named Len. My wife and I have been married for 14 years and in a committed (I assumed) relationship for 17 years. Sex between us (often kinky) has always been great. We have a wonderful life together and two perfect children. I thought we were good; turns out things were too good to be true. I learned recently that my wife has been unfaithful to me throughout our marriage. She began an affair with an older man soon before we were married, and they were physically intimate for five years, including bondage and a Master/sub relationship. The physical sex stopped, but phone sex and online flirting continued up until I discovered this two weeks ago. This is a man I know. She has introduced our children to him. There’s more: She slept with another man (just once, more bondage) but also flirted with him online and met up with him while I was away. She slept with yet another man she works with (just once, vanilla this time). She had phone sex with at least two other men and flirted with still more on Facebook. This came out because I was jealous about something that now seems minor and checked her e-mail.

(Not proud of that.) She is repentant and relieved that I finally know, and she promises that she will be faithful from now on. I’ll always love her, and I know she loves me. We had one session with a counselor and another is scheduled. Results were mixed. One thing that came out was that she has never been faithful to a romantic/sexual partner. I could forgive a one-time drunken fling, but this is a consistent pattern of infidelity that runs from the beginning of our marriage, and I had no idea. I cannot process it. I thought she had always been as loyal as I’ve been, which is to say completely. I can’t put my wedding ring on – it feels like a lie. I have no one to talk to. For the sake of our future, the love we still share and our children, we are committed to fixing things, but we’re not sure how.

Heartbroken And Devastated I’m going to preface my response with what someone in my position is expected to say and what, given the circumstances, may even be true: Your marriage is over. The scale, duration, and psychological cruelty of your wife’s betrayals may be too great for you to overcome.

But you didn’t need me to tell you that, HAD. You knew that already. So I can only assume you wrote wanting to hear something else. You don’t need me to outline the reasons you should leave, and you don’t need my permission to go. You wrote because you’re looking for a reason to stay.

I’ll give it my best shot.

A long-term relationship is a myth two people create together. It’s not chemistry, it’s not math, it’s not engineering. It’s a story, HAD – a story we tell each other, a story we tell others and a story we tell ourselves.

And sometimes it’s a story we have to revise.

Right now, it feels like the story you’ve been telling yourself and others about your marriage is a lie: not partly, but wholly. You thought your marriage was a loving, committed, and “completely loyal” one, but it’s not – it can’t be and it never was, because she was cheating on you from the beginning.

But loyalty isn’t something we demonstrate with our genitals alone. Your wife wasn’t loyal to you sexually, and that’s painful. And the conventional “wisdom” is that people don’t cheat on partners they love.

But you were married to this woman, and you describe your marriage as good, loving and wonderful. And it somehow managed to be all those things despite your wife’s betrayals. She must have been loyal to you in other ways or you would’ve divorced her long before you discovered her infidelities.

Think back over the last 17 years: every kind and loving gesture, every considerate action, every intimacy, every moment you took care of each other – was it all a lie?

I’m not trying to exonerate your wife, and I’m not trying to minimize her betrayal or your pain. But if you want to stay together you’re going to have to tell yourself a new story, one that makes room for contradiction (loves you, cheated on you), betrayal (shitloads), apologies (shitloads from her), forgiveness (shitloads from you) and … some accommodations going forward. If I may paraphrase Maya Angelou: When someone finally shows you who they are – after you found the incriminating e-mails – you should believe them. Your wife has never been faithful to you or to anyone else, at least not sexually. Adjusting your expectations and making accommodations accordingly is more realistic than expecting your wife to become a different person.

Finally, HAD, a little bonus advice. I ran into Esther Perel, author of Mating in Captivity: Unlocking Erotic Intelligence, the day your letter arrived. Perel is a psychotherapist and couples counselor whose most recent TED Talk (“Rethinking Infidelity”) is one you’re going to want to watch. I shared your letter with Perel and asked her what she thought: Based on her vast experience working with couples confronting infidelity, did she think your marriage was doomed?

“No, I don’t,” said Perel.

Perel’s response honestly surprised me.

We spoke for 10 minutes, and I recorded the conversation. It won’t fit in this space, so I’m going to post Perel’s thoughts as the Savage Love Letter of the Day when this column comes out. So you’re going to get a second opinion from an actual expert, HAD, and – spoiler alert – it’s a hopeful one.
