Readers react. Florida students would get a day off from school to come down from their Halloween sugar highs, under a bill filed last week by Sen. Annette Taddeo (“State senator wants to make the day after Halloween a school holiday,” Jan. 7). Taddeo filed the bill to designate the day after Halloween as a school holiday after fielding many requests from students, teachers and parents in her district, she says, adding that as a parent, she “totally gets it.” @Gina-Renée Clark Make Election Day a holiday. Eating too much candy and then needing a day to recover is not a reason to celebrate in America. Having the time and freedom to vote is an imperative. @Dan Kaye I want the Monday we go back to Daylight Savings Time to be a holiday. @Patti Daddio Then I want the Monday after Super Bowl Sunday off.

@Richard Neilan Our schools already rank at or near the bottom compared to other states, and we’re going to give students MORE time away from the classroom? That’s just stupid. Last week we reported that Orlando police had arrested a man seen shooting an AR-style rifle on the streets of downtown Orlando. The man claimed he had been attacked and punched, so he went to his car to retrieve the rifle and a loaded handgun, and returned to the scene to fire a “warning shot” over the heads of his assailants, he said. @Michael Kelmachter Here’s the thing – even if he was attacked, he was able to proceed back to his vehicle, retrieve his weapon, and said he was going to fire a warning shot. If you have time to go back to your car, you have time to get in your car and leave. You have time to call the police. But instead because of our gun culture, he chose to take the most violent approach. Where did the rounds he fire end up? … We must change the idea that guns are solutions to problems.

New study says Florida’s Black teens make up over 70 percent of all adolescent gun-related homicides since Stand Your Ground: Last month came the latest study of many to highlight “Stand Your Ground” laws’ racial bias. The Joyce Foundation found that since the NRAbacked laws debuted in 2005, teenage gun-related homicides in Florida (between 15-19 years of age, and not counting suicides) have jumped to 2.16 deaths per 100,000 teens, which is significantly up from 1.53 deaths for every 100,000 before that. While white teens also saw a bump in homicides after 2005, rising from 0.56 to 0.61 deaths for every 100,000, however, Black teens increased .97 per every 100,000 teens to 1.55. In other words, Black teens made up 63.5 percent of all adolescent firearm homicides before “Stand Your Ground” and 71.8 percent after the laws went into effect.

Video shows a man firing an AR-style rifle on the street in downtown Orlando: Shocking video showed a 26-year-old man firing an AR-style rifle while walking on South Orange Avenue in downtown Orlando at 3 a.m. Jan. 9. The Orlando Police Department says the incident was prompted by a fight outside a nearby club. The man, identified as Ryan Sarjoo, claimed he was punched in an attempted robbery. He then went to his car to retrieve the rifle and a loaded handgun, and returned to the scene to fire a “warning shot” over the heads of his assailants. Witnesses called the police and took cell phone videos. When officers arrived, witnesses say Sarjoo had placed the rifle back in his car, but he was still armed with a cocked handgun in his pants when he was apprehended. He was arrested for openly carrying a firearm. orlandoweekly.com

A FIGHT EVERYONE LOST

Trump and Khameini, Americans and Iranians, not to mention Soleimani and the Ukraine BY JE FFREY C. BILL M A N

F

or a couple of hours last Tuesday night, I had the sinking feeling that the United States was about to embark on yet another generational conflict. Iran had responded to President Trump’s killing of its Quds commander, Gen. Qassem Soleimani, by launching missiles and rockets at two American bases in Iraq. Days earlier, Trump had vowed on Twitter to “quickly & fully strike back, & perhaps in a disproportionate manner” if Iran did so. He said that the U.S. would target 52 sites – one for each of the 52 hostages Iran took four decades ago – including some that are “a very high level & important to Iran & the Iranian culture.” (Targeting cultural sites is a war crime, but never mind that.) Given the rhetoric – and Trump’s pathological need to prove how much tougher he is than Barack Obama – it was difficult to see how the U.S. could back down. Missiles would be in the air soon, headed toward Tehran. Perhaps Iran would make good on its threat to level Dubai in response, or perhaps it would attack Israel. Lots of people would die. The worst-case scenario was about to play out on live television. But it didn’t. Iran hit the brakes. Its retaliation was more for show than to cause harm. No one was killed. After the attack, Iran said it didn’t intend any further action. It offered Trump an off-ramp. The next morning, a slurring and snorting Trump took it. He said the Iranians backed down. He insisted (without evidence) that he had killed Soleimani to prevent an imminent attack. He patted

himself on the back for being tougher than Barack Obama. He repeatedly lied about Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran. He promised to slap more sanctions on Iran. He urged NATO – the allies he’s alienated – to get more involved. He urged Iran – the country he’s antagonized – to negotiate a new nuclear deal, even though he withdrew from the last one. It was an odd speech. The optics were unsettling, too. Trump sounded off, flat, heavy, exhausted. Maybe he hadn’t slept well – he’d just bumbled his way to the precipice of a world crisis, after all. (On the other hand, Sen. Lindsey Graham thought it was Trump’s “Tear Down This Wall,” so your mileage may vary.) Now that things have calmed down – for the time being, anyway – I’ve been trying to figure out what exactly the Iran standoff accomplished. What, in other words, was the point of stoking this fire? I don’t see how the affair benefited the U.S., unless you ascribe to Soleimani god-like superpowers. The Quds force has about 20,000 members; its leader’s death won’t affect operations. The idea that killing Soleimani disrupted an imminent attack is far-fetched at best. Instead, Trump felt pressured by the Republican hawks who will judge his impeachment trial and wanted to avenge a recent Iranian-backed militia action against the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. In the process, the U.S. made itself even more of a pariah. The Iraqi parliament voted to expel American troops, and then the U.S. threatened to cut off Iraq’s access to a New York Fed account

holding oil revenue (after Trump had threatened to impose sanctions on a supposed ally). Protests against the Iraqi and Iranian governments became protests against the American government. The Iranians bailed on their commitments to the Obama nuclear agreement. European allies grew increasingly frustrated. The region is no closer to peace today than it was before Soleimani was killed, nor is the U.S. any closer to a resolution with Iran. America, it seemed, gained nothing except a dead adversary. Trump, perhaps, gained a campaign talking point. But a USA Today poll found that, by a 2-to-1 margin, Americans thought Trump’s decision had made the country less safe, and a majority thought his behavior toward Iran was “reckless.” Maybe that’s why his polling numbers remain low. In any event, Nancy Pelosi will transmit the articles of impeachment to the Senate this week, and this episode will fade into the background as Trump’s trial begins. That leaves Iran, which initially looked not too worse for wear. To much of the world, Trump was the belligerent one; Iran – its atrocious human rights record aside – had played the grown-up. It had stopped things from spiraling out of control. And if Iraq did boot coalition forces, that would likely strengthen Iran’s regional position. And while Trump could levy more sanctions, there was only so much juice left in that squeeze. But then the world learned – and Iran admitted after three days of denials – that a Ukrainian 737 that crashed outside Tehran shortly after Iran’s missile strike wasn’t downed by mechanical failure, but by an Iranian surface-to-air missile. On heightened alert, the Iranians – who, ineptly, hadn’t shut down commercial flights – mistook the plane for an American counterattack and got triggerhappy. Iran tried to blame American aggression for the 176 lost lives, many of them Iranian, but by Saturday, Iranians weren’t having it. In Tehran, protesters were calling out their supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, shouting, “Death to the dictator!” and “Death to liars!” according to videos posted to social media. Days before, the country’s anger was pointed at the U.S. No longer. In the end, this seems like a fight everyone lost. feedback@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

SPLITSVILLE Officials move swiftly on highway extension into Split Oak Forest as environmentalists scramble BY SOLOM ON GU STAVO

I

n a six-day approval blitz in December, a plan to extend Osceola Parkway into Split Oak Forest was approved by the Central Florida Expressway Authority Dec. 12, Osceola County Dec. 19 and Orange County Dec. 17. The plan, which awaits state review, is not a done deal. But the triple approval was a huge step. This has alarmed local conservationists, who are concerned about the deleterious effects of laying roads in one of Central Florida’s most pristine forests. Split Oak Forest is owned by Osceola and Orange counties, purchased as a mitigation bank against wetland impacts. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has spent more than 20 years maintaining the forest, untouched in centuries by Central Florida’s rampant development. Only hiking and permitted horseback riding are allowed. Hunting, camping and biking are all prohibited. The proposal, billed by proponents as an effort to ease traffic on Orlando’s congested roadways, is to connect the Osceola Parkway toll road from State Road 417 to the Orlando International Airport with a nine-mile extension that cuts through the Split Oak Forest. A previous plan split the 1,700-acre forest down the center with the highway. The plan that passed in December was the result of a “study-reevaluation” that moved the road south. CFX passed the updated plan unanimously. The Osceola board vote was four-to-one, with Commissioner Peggy Choudhry as the lone “no” vote. Orange County voted five-to-two in favor, with commissioners Maribel Gomez Cordero and Emily Bonilla in opposition. The new plan also donates 1,550 acres of conservation land next to Split Oak, nearly doubling the reserve. The highway would be on a 60-acre easement in Split Oak, with a 100-acre buffer between it and wildlife. To venture into the conservation land at all is to cross “a line in the sand,” says Valerie Anderson, president of Friends of Split Oak Forest, a grassroots nonprofit devoted to protecting Split Oak. Orange County Charter Review Commission member Eugene Stoccardo calls the breach “a threat to every single conservational act.” Anderson says she is going to begin protesting and pursuing legal action. She points to a voterpassed 1998 constitutional amendment that bars governments from getting rid of conservation land

unless the land is no longer worth conserving. Rachel Deming, assistant professor of law at Barry University, says that no agency has said this about Split Oak, and that a court could strike down the road construction as a constitutional violation. Other detractors of the plan, while unhappy about any disturbance to Split Oak, have settled into mitigation mode, hoping to at least lessen the impact. “I’ve been at this long enough to know you can’t just say ‘no, no, no,’” says Sierra Club president Marjorie Holt. She says she’s been fighting to protect Split Oak for over 20 years. Since Orange and Osceola counties are “hellbent,” in Holt’s estimation, on extending the parkway through Split Oak, a pragmatic thing to do is prevent any further construction, be it for more roads or commercial development. Holt, who is still considering ways of pre-empting the road altogether, says the donation of 1,550 acres around Split Oak is “the least devilish” of the details in the newer deal. Split Oak was set aside decades ago for a reason: The unblemished land is a unique ecosystem that relies on forest burns. But she says the donation is in the direction of a somewhat tolerable compromise. Charles Lee, director of advocacy for Audubon Florida, who also balked at the first plan – “it was an outright disaster” – thinks the latest deal is more than a compromise. “It’s clearly a good deal to add that much conservation land,” he says. The extra 1,550 acres next to Split Oak would otherwise be used for developments that would bump up against the forest. Osceola County says one of those developments was going to be an industrial water treatment plant. “This is a 10 to 1 gain compared to the acres impacted,” claimed Osceola County in a statement on the extension. The county says the extra land will create “opportunities for new wildlife corridors while preserving existing ones.” “It is also important to note that the project does not set a precedent,” said Osceola County staff in the statement, adding that state statute allows for facilities like roads through conservation lands and that discussion thus far overlooks the original purpose of easing traffic on the east side of Central Florida. The plan still needs to be reviewed by Florida Communities Trust.

Venturing into conservation land is crossing “a line in the sand,” says Valerie Anderson, president of Friends of Split Oak Forest.

Kieran Castaño’s paintings aren’t just beautiful – they’re necessary

W

hen I first encountered Kieran Castaño’s paintings and comics in early 2017, the artist was nursing wounds fresh from the 2016 election. Castaño channeled the energy of resistance by celebrating identities marginalized by Trump and the violent white nationalist movement invigorated by its return to a mainstream platform. As we reach the end of 45’s first term and the November 2020 election approaches, the myriad of issues broached in Castaño’s work remain relevant. Castaño has honed his pointillist, illustrative style during these past few years and found a powerful artistic voice in pastiche references to art historical canon, popular culture, and politics. The work Castaño created in 2017, including the series Trans Portraits and several paintings referencing Caravaggio’s painting “David With the Head of Goliath” (ca 1610), grew into the oeuvre on display in A Certain Kind of Light, a solo exhibition of his art at Mills Gallery. Consistent throughout Castaño’s works in various two-dimensional media is a distinctive pointillist style of mark-making, which he describes in a recent video interview with the show’s curator, Nathaly Ruiz. Castaño, who has autism, likens the repetitive physical motions required to paint in this style to the repetitive body movements referred to as self-stimulating behavior, or “stimming,” common in folks with autism: “The only way that I can make art, from me, and not get tired … is if I paint in this style where I’m actually physically releasing energy into the painting.” The paintings Castaño has created through this process seem generative of energy, as well – incisive from a distance and abstract at close range, their subject matter as well as their form facilitating empathetic responses. Castaño’s “Thank You,” painted in 2019, is a simple and poignant depiction of a casket adorned with flowers and draped in a shroud emblazoned with Donald Trump’s tweets regarding his

imposition of a ban on trans people in the military. This painting has become hyper-relevant recently as tensions between the U.S. and Iran rise after Trump ordered a U.S. airstrike on Baghdad that killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani. “What’s the Issue?,” painted in 2019, depicts a man gazing into the mirror in a women’s bathroom to check his facial hair, wearing a clearly misgendered nametag (“Katherine”). The reflection reveals a young child looking, confused, toward an obfuscated parental figure, ostensibly due to the masculine figure so out of place in the women’s room. This painting reveals the on-theground realities of so-called “bathroom bills,” such as the one overturned in July of 2019 by a federal judge in North Carolina, that ban trans people from using the restrooms on state property that best fit their gender identity, and force them to use the one that matches the sex listed on their birth certificate. In his artist statement, Castaño says, “I use color as light to shine on Trans subject[s] and related themes. To me, color used as light represents wisdom, truth and self-love gained from our unique journeys to find and know our true selves. I use pointillism to bring out the authenticity of every color within ourselves.” As those in power continue to engineer marginalizations of so many individuals based on their identities, self-representation and an awareness of the intersections of public and private life become valuable tools of resistance. arts@orlandoweekly.com

BY SETH KUBERSKY America’s gun violence crisis will hit home at House of Blues on Sunday, Jan. 19, when activist Manuel Oliver, the father of a slain Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student, makes Disney Springs the sole Orlando stop on his national tour of Guac: My Son, My Hero. Oliver’s one-man multimedia performance traces the aftermath of his son Joaquin’s murder, which led Manuel and his wife, Patricia, to found Change the Ref, a grassroots awareness-raising organization intended to help future leaders counteract the NRA’s influence. The show, which combines monologues with live painting and audience participation, was created with the help of Broadway heavyweights like co-writer/director James Clements, actor Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton) and lyricist Benji Pasek (Dear Evan Hansen). Good news for supporters of Sanford’s Theater West End, which had announced that it was in danger of losing its recently renovated venue if a nearly $30,000 deficit was not resolved by midDecember. Shortly after Christmas, the company announced on its Facebook page that it had raised $25,324.25 through online crowdfunding, plus an additional $2,395.50 in offline donations, from more than 200 people. While the total was short of their initial goal, they say it was enough to “meet our obligations to move forward” with a season that includes The Great American Trailer Park Musical (Jan. 24-Feb. 9), Green Day’s American Idiot (April 10-26) and A Chorus Line (May 29-June 14). Company members from Disney’s Aladdin will present a fundraiser cabaret for Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS while their tour is in town. “Songs From a Whole New World” will be held on Monday, Jan. 27, at the Mezz; a $10 donation allows you to hear this talented troupe perform new and original songs in an intimate setting.

Strong female-centric shows dominated at this year’s sold-out Orlando Fringe Winter Mini-Fest

CANDICE ROBERTS IN LARRY | PHOTO COURTESY OF ORLANDO FRINGE

Summertime, and the Orlando and incessant string of sexist non-sequiFringe theater festival that heralds its return, doesn’t arrive for over four more months. But just try telling that to the 80-degree weather or the arts patrons who packed the Lowndes Shakespeare Center for last weekend’s Orlando Fringe Winter Mini-Fest, which saw multiple sold-out shows for the first time in its four-year history. The four-day festival kicked off last Thursday night with the unveiling of a provocative poster campaign for the full Fest in May, which features graffiti-style stencils and the slogan “Incite Art.” “For the past two years we’ve given a message of community and embracing each other. … This year our climate has changed a little bit,” Fringe executive director Alauna Friskics explained during the presentation. “There are people whose liberties might be in jeopardy, they’re losing their voice, and we want to give a pathway for those voices to come back.” One artist whose voice was definitely heard last weekend is Vancouver’s Candice Roberts, who was awarded the Critics’ Choice top prize for Larry, her boldly transgressive one-person comedy. In a plot embodying the spirit of “anything can happen at Fringe,” one of this year’s performers has failed to show up, which leaves lanky, long-haired stagehand Larry an ideal opportunity to prove that it can’t be that hard to put on a show. What follows in an increasingly surreal series of awkward variety acts – ranging from a barrage of bad penis jokes, tap-dancing to heavy metal music and audience-participation Budweiser chugging – all wrapped in a blanket of casual misogyny. With his patently fake ZZ Top beard

turs, Larry is like the Canadian poster boy for toxic masculinity, but he’s trying his best to get “woke,” if only to impress the girl of his dreams. Larry’s odyssey of self-actualization involves an unforgettably awful cover of a Pink Floyd classic, and culminates in a soul- (and skin-) baring dream sequence that demonstrates the fearless lengths Roberts will go to for her audience. Roberts calls her unique brand of feminist physical theater a “clown show,” but it sure ain’t Cirque du Soleil. Whatever you label it, Larry packed the full breadth of the Fringe experience into one performance. In addition to Larry, Roberts also led The Myrtle Sisters: Out of Time, another of my favorite Mini-Fest offerings, albeit on the opposite end of the family-friendly spectrum. Emerging from a lo-fi steampunk time machine, the trio of bespectacled siblings from the Jazz Age has smashed into our era with a Macarenasworn mission to collect and share dances from across the centuries. It’s a sad commentary on current culture that the best moves 2020 has to contribute are flossing and the Baby Shark dance, but the Myrtle Sisters observe and ape it all with enthusiasm during the audience-participation opening of this delightful all-ages show. This talented trio of physical comics could easily milk an hour of material out of some interactive improv and their repertoire of toe-tapping old-timey pop tunes like “Sister Kate,” which they sing in nostalgic three-part harmony. But Out of Time achieves a higher level of entertainment by investing each character with a distinct personality and objectives, which

are winkingly illuminated in fourth-wallbreaking asides. Shirl (Candice Roberts) is the high-strung, guitar-strumming leader; Gladys (Kat Single-Dain) is the underappreciated worker bee; and goldfish-obsessed Edna (Nayana Fielkov) may seem dim, but she shines the light of truth when it counts. The sisters’ affectionate arguing and acrobatic dance moves reminded me of the Triplets of Belleville. The action, which includes slow-motion pie fights and fishbowl headstands, is nothing less than inspired, and the briskly paced production leaves its audience wanting more. This adorable adventure would make a perfect first Fringe experience for kids and kids at heart. The list of strong female-centric shows at Winter Mini-Fest continued with Lindsay Taylor’s knockout solo turn in The Lightweight, Eleanor O’Brien’s educationally erotic How to Really, Really? Really! Love a Woman, and Jennica McCleary’s talent-packed Winnie’s Rock Cauldron Cabaret. One more to watch for during its encore at May’s festival is Six Chick Flicks, or a Legally Blonde Pretty Woman Dirty Danced on the Beaches While Writing a Notebook on the Titanic, in which the crack comic team of Kerry Ipema and KK Apple affectionately skewer six classic so-called “chick flicks.” The show, which was created in collaboration with “Fringe God” TJ Dawe, consists of 10-minute, two-person parodies of a half-dozen movies, beginning with Titanic (whose buoyant doors become a running gag) and ending with a ridiculous re-creation of Dirty Dancing’s iconic choreography. Ipema and Apple spoof the flims’ storylines and stars with SNL-worthy aplomb, but also step outside the narrative to point out how these supposedly female-friendly films reinforce the patriarchy. skubersky@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

Chef Jack Jone’s specials (offered four days a week, Fridays through Mondays) advance Thai cuisine in this city like no other, with dishes like khao soi in an incredible curry broth and tempurabattered soft-shell crabs pan-fried in red curry paste with shrimp fat and palm sugar. Pastes and broths are painstakingly made – sample the delicate wontons in broth fashioned from pork bone, soy and ginger for a small taste. TERRALINA CRAFTED ITALIAN This restaurant touts the charms and delights of Italy’s Lake District, but don’t expect a seafood-focused menu – rather, you’ll find one offering a snapshot of the Boot’s best: antipasti, meatballs, pastas (some house-made) and wood-fired pizzas. There are grilled items to be had as well (pork chops, ribeye, mahi) and a decent list of Italian wines. Open daily. 1650 E. Buena Vista Drive, Lake Buena Vista, 407-934-8888; $$$

DULL-LITTLE

Latest iteration of the Dr. Dolittle story fizzles BY T HADDEUS MCCOL LU M

D

r. John Dolittle, the Englishman who can talk to animals, has been a part of children’s literature for 100 years, ever since English author Hugh Lofting published the first Dolittle novel in 1920. The character has weaved his way through the century in children’s books, film and adaptations, and radio and television series, the latest being the mononymed Dolittle from director Stephen Gaghan (Syriana) from a script by Gaghan and screenwriting team Dan Gregor and Doug Mand (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend). Robert Downey Jr., freshly released from his career-defining string of performances as Tony Stark, Marvel’s Iron Man, lends his talents to portraying the character.

This latest attempt at reviving the property as a modern franchise, though, is kind of a mess. Adapting the original Doctor Dolittle or any of its sequels in the present day poses quite a challenge for screenwriters, as the original texts are steeped in early 20th-century colonial racism. One of the main characters, Prince Bumpo, is an African prince who helps the doctor and his animal friends in exchange for having his face bleached white. There’s no way to write around that kind of tasteless throwback other than to excise it, which Dolittle wisely does. But what we get instead is the story of the doctor – a heartbroken widower in this instance – getting pulled out of retirement

to find the cure for a mysterious illness that has struck Queen Victoria (Jessie Buckley). The ensuing adventure pits Dolittle, his tagalong apprentice Tommy Stubbins (Harry Collett) and a pack of animals voiced by various famous actors against rival Dr. Blair Müdfly (Michael Sheen) in a race for the cure. Sheen is a delight as the villainous Dr. Müdfly, bringing the same level of dedication to that character’s mustachetwirling smarm as he did to the bookish Aziraphale in last year’s Good Omens miniseries. Downey, on the other hand, seems so uninterested in the character of Dolittle that he treats the entire exercise as a way to practice his Welsh accent – yes, that’s Welsh, not Scottish – while bouncing from one sight gag to the next. The animals and their jokes will please children, but aren’t anything that adults will necessarily be impressed by. The visual effects are fine, though definitely not stateof-the-art. A second-act caper involving Antonio Banderas as a silver-fox pirate king and Ralph Fiennes as a golden-toothed tiger looking for psych counseling is a high point, but is forgotten fairly quickly. If Dolittle had gone the Cats route and leaned hard into the ridiculousness of its premise, it would have at least been memorable. Even though Cats has been universally derided, it at least has people flocking to the theater to see just how bonkers it could possibly be. Alas, Dolittle just isn’t weird enough to justify the weirdness of its premise – and this is a movie that includes the most elaborate dragon-fart joke ever put to screen. At least kids will love it. tmccollum@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

ON SCREENS IN ORLANDO

Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys for Life PHOTO COURTESY SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT

BY STEVE SCHN EI D ER

OPENING THIS WEEK: Bad Boys for Life Years ago, director Michael Bay told the press that the prospect of a third installment in his Bad Boys franchise was iffy at best, simply because he and star Will Smith commanded the biggest salaries in Hollywood. But the studio found a clever workaround: They just cut Bay out of the picture! In his place for this supposed final outing are Belgian directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who have never before helmed a major Stateside release, and whose combined salaries are thus presumably equivalent to Martin Lawrence’s dry-cleaning bill. Too bad for the bean counters that Smith’s take can’t be keyed to the performance of Gemini Man, ’cause then they could all afford Pelotons! So what are we to expect from this highly anticipated and suddenly affordable third installment? Well, the plot finds erstwhile partners Marcus and Mike facing retirement but pursued one last time by a mobster with a grudge against them – which isn’t exactly a concept so revolutionary you’d need 17 years to come up with it. And yes, it’s been that long, although sometimes the passage of time is better marked in lowered standards than in years: When I saw Bad Boys 2, I thought that human corpses being used as slapstick props was the most inhumane spectacle I had ever witnessed. Ah, yes ... life four Republican National Conventions ago. Anyway, it ultimately doesn’t matter how I feel about Bad Boys for Life, since the Christmas episode of Saturday Night Live

revealed that the biggest controversy facing black America right now is where along the quality scale the film is going to fall: just above great, or slightly below the greatest ever? Have fun arguing that one, everybody. Just don’t trip over any corpses. (R) Weathering With You Japan’s official entry in this year’s Oscars is an animated romantic fantasy about a teenager who runs away to Tokyo, where he “lives in isolation and finds a job as a writer.” (All together now: Redundant!) As part of his new life, he befriends a girl who seems to be able to control the weather – which is quite the boon indeed in the midst of a particularly rainy season. In Orlando, their relationship would consist of trysts lasting from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. daily. Director Makoto Shinkai’s previous picture, Your Name, is the top-grossing anime film of all time worldwide. Weathering With You, which was released in Japan last summer, is currently No. 6 on that particular chart, so grab a seat for the flick’s American bow this weekend if you’re interested in making a bit of history. And no, smartass, I don’t know if it’s supposed to rain. (PG-13)

ALSO PLAYING: Chhapaak In this Hindi-language biopic, actor Deepika Padukone plays Laxmi Agarwal, who at age 15 survived an acid attack by a man whose romantic advances she had declined. Which reminds me: What do we all think of Harvey Weinstein’s walker? (NR; at Universal Cinemark at CityWalk and XD) orlandoweekly.com

ot, blistering, cathartic melancholy that bows its head in mourning before exploding with a rage that only heartbreak or disenchantment can conjure: These are the sounds that Gillian Carter make. Brutal and beautiful, sometimes within the breadth of a two-minute song – what spews forth from this Orlando trio is nothing less than an assault on the senses. At the helm of this ship, navigating the turbulent waters of a strange post-hardcore sea of cinematic expressionism, is vocalist-guitarist Logan Rivera. It’s his often dark lyrics and heavy themed songwriting, with “inspirations that can come from anywhere … a new riff, life, events in history, different tunings,” that have kept the engine of the band churning for a jaw-dropping 15 years. “Next year is the 10th anniversary of our second record (Having Lost …), so we have some ideas we’re toying with.” Rivera hints at some manner of anniversary happening in the works, but he “wouldn’t want to spoil any surprises.” The band are also working

on material for a new release and, of course, relentlessly touring the planet. “One state, one country at a time. We’ve been doing it for such a long time now that we can handle whatever the road throws at us and go with the flow,” he says. His plate may look full already, yet when Rivera isn’t fronting Gillian Carter he’s putting an equal amount of animalistic energy into drumming for local noise-punks Witchbender. “I have a couple of [other] recording projects I’m working on,” he tells Orlando Weekly, “but those are just for fun.” Beyond metal, punk, screamo and all of the variations that lie therein, what other creative stirrings could be buried in the complex mind of this tireless worker bee? “Nu-disco, indietronica … I’d love to start an indie-pop project like Metronomy or something,” he confesses. In addition to dabbling in various musical ventures, Rivera records a podcast called “Young, Hip & Sexual,” a venture that finds him, bandmate Bob Caruso and friend Chaz Brockington “being goofy. He also enjoys painting: “I currently don’t have any plans to release any artwork for this or any other bands, but if anyone is interested, hit me up.” At some point, he might also sleep – but not this week. This week, he and his band play Will’s Pub on a bill that’s topped by sludge masters of the swamp Black Tusk and Fort Lauderdale doom metal band Ether Coven. It may be an opening gig for the guys, but don’t expect that to turn down the volume of their performance one bit. “We treat every show like we’re performing at Download Fest, so whether we’re opening, performing in the middle of, or closing a show, we make sure all energy is at 110 percent.” And if it’s a crowd that’s new to them, all the better: “Those crowds make us play harder.” music@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

BY B AO L E - H U U FLASHLIGHTS AT PUNK ON THE PATIO | PHOTO BY JEN CRAY

While last week was all in with the new (new year with a new venue actually named the New Standard), this week kicks off with a farewell to a beloved scene institution.

PUNK ON THE PATIO FINALE, JAN. 7

Almost to the very day of its 2016 debut, Punk on the Patio just sang its swan song. In an epoch of declining live music in downtown, the courtyard concert concept of Montgomery Drive’s Marshal Rones has been a great and valiant event. Of the night’s lineup, Orlando band Like Father were a surprise. There’s no shortage of emo revivalism right now. But like some well-tailored 1990s indie dream, Like Father take true emo heart and crank it with great fuzz and impressive rock brawn, giving unexpected kick and dimension to what can be a mawkish genre. Then there was local pop-punk band No Handouts. They are, in their own words, a “Female-Fronted, Multi-Racial, Multi-Gender, LGBTQIA+, Local Activist Alt Band.” For all these noble Benetton ideals, though, this group’s aesthetic is much more Hot Topic. They’re a young band, so perhaps they’ll one day outgrow their freshman inclinations, but all the heart and good intentions in the world can’t redeem mall punk. Once Flashlights got on, however, everything was as it should be to send off POTP properly. Although perhaps one of Orlando’s most underappreciated bands despite tangible accomplishments like getting signed to Hard Rock Records and recording an album with Frightened Rabbit’s Scott Hutchison and Andy Monaghan, Flashlights are with-

Besides their setup as a keyboard-anddrums duo, irrepressible Pennsylvania couple act Slingshot Dakota are notable for an approach to emotional rock that pushes overtly pretty melodies with pronounced sonic heft. They’re less about being cool or clever than they are about unleashing heart with as much brio and scale as a two-piece can muster. As their theatrical flair would suggest, they go for it with total abandon. With these two, it’s epic or bust. While drummer Tom Patterson bangs it out like he’s rocking an arena, the panout question one of the decade’s oramic keyboards of Carly Comando push best. Unfortunately, they haven’t been both the soaring melodies and the groaning, propulsive low end. Add in a climactic active in perhaps a couple of years. Lisa Bielawa

This double-barreled night of new music was originally announced as a three-day festival, but due to unforeseen circumstances, had to be cut back. It’s a shame, but this program still has plenty to offer. The evening begins in the Plaza’s Main Hall with musicians from the Orlando Phil performing Mozart’s Symphony No. 36 alongside Lisa Bielawa’s violin concerto Sanctuary, with soloist Jennifer Koh. After a cocktail break, a second show unfolds in the more intimate Palmer Room, featuring Koh and Bielawa performing Bielawa’s related Sanctuary Songs. Bielawa built these works during a 2018 fellowship at the American Antiquarian Society, during which she researched instances of the word “sanctuary” in American writings. “I explored broadsides, poetry, political tracts and speeches, novels and children’s literature,” says Bielawa, “in order to reach a greater understanding of its layered meaning within American consciousness.” The three Sanctuary Songs appear on Koh’s 2019 album, Limitless, but why not treat yourself and experience them live? – Jessica Bryce Young 7 & 9 p.m. | The Plaza Live, 425 N. Keith Sweat MUSIC

Last time Quiet Storm king and loverman supreme Keith Sweat swept through Orlando, it was as part of a group Valentine’s Day show with Bobby Brown and El DeBarge. This time around you get Sweat all … to … yourself. The come-hither canon of Keith Sweat still sounds fresh and lascivious to 21st-century ears – “Get Up On It,” “My Body,” “Freak Me,” “Lose Control” – and it’s all down to Sweat’s voice, by turns seductive and plaintive. He’s a worthy successor to Luther Vandross, and this uncertain year could definitely use a little romance. – Matthew Moyer 9 p.m. | Hard Rock Live, 6050 Universal Blvd. | 407-351-5483 | hardrock.com | $47.50-$83.50

EVENT

CIVICS

Our fellow citizens in Puerto Rico are getting a lot of challenges tossed their way of late, between earthquakes and Trump’s callous disregard of his duties to provide aid and comfort in times of emergency. This is a vibrant island and culture that needs to be celebrated, and so La SanSe returns for another year just in the nick of time. The free event offers a wealth of music, arts, food, vendors, traditional dancing, drink and perspectives from Puerto Rico and its people, so interwoven into the cultural fabric of Central Florida. The musical offerings, featuring a partial Menudo (!) reunion (get ready to scream, and then maybe register to vote with Boricua Vota), Andres Jimenez, LIMI-T 21, Puertorrican Power and Los DPR, among others, are top-shelf. Weekend plans: made. – MM

Three years after the inaugural Women’s March on the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration, Women’s March 2020 is back to protest on behalf of women and femmes. As thousands descend on Washington, D.C., Women’s March Florida chapters from all over the state gather at Orlando City Hall to demonstrate in support of the Equal Rights Amendment, racial equity, LGBTQ community protections, immigrants rights, Trump’s impeachment and more. The day of strong-voiced sisterhood starts with a Martin Luther King Jr. parade, includes DJ sets and vendor tables, and features keynote speakers like State Attorney Aramis Ayala on prison reform and Ph.D. student Isabel Sousa-Rodriguez on immigration and issues for transgender women. Southern Fried Sunday, a hallowed local tradition of combining barbecue with country, roots and rock music, turns 14 this month and to celebrate, Will’s Pub is bringing an Austin, Texas, tradition to town. Chicken Shit Bingo, made famous by Ginny’s Little Longhorn saloon in Austin, is played by taking a chicken, putting it on top of a grid of numbered squares, and placing bets on what squares it will do its business on. Get the right sequence of numbers on your $2 ticket and you’ll win a bunch of money. Lauris Vidal provides live musical accompaniment to the chicken-watching, while the Rachel Decker Band, Tony Macaluso & the Hearts of Fire, Jordan Foley Duo and JunoSmile play inside. Science Night Live: Otronicon Edition PHOTO BY ROBERTO GONZALEZ

Beer Pairing Dinner Lake Nona’s Park Pizza & Brewing Company gets in on the Orlando Beer Week action with a special beer dinner this week. Eight different beers are paired with a six-course meal that includes shrimp & tasso hushpuppies, black truffle tart and charred octopus. The meal is a collaboration between Park Pizza head brewer Marco Reyna and Boxi Park executive chef Jon Fahey. Reservations are required. 6:30 p.m. Wednesday; Park Pizza & Brewing Company, 6941 Lake Nona Blvd.; $60; parkpizzalakenona.com.

Kölsch Garten Orlando Beer Week continues this week with events at breweries and taprooms around town. Redlight Redlight pays tribute to the underrated German Kölsch style of beer – a light ale with a relatively low ABV, great for session drinking. After a few rounds, get a bite to eat from the Swine & Sons pop-up kitchen. 1 p.m. Saturday; Redlight Redlight, 2810 Corrine Drive; various menu prices; orlbeerweek. com. Centermost Point Invitational Beer Festival One of the crown jewels of Orlando Beer Week is the Centermost Point Invitational. The beer festival brings 20 curated breweries from across the state to the grounds of Ten10 Brewing, offering you the chance to try dozens of craft beers. The “What Ales Ya?” podcast is in attendance to interview beermakers, while a variety of food trucks provide lunch options. Noon-4 p.m. Saturday; Ten10 Brewing, 1010 Virginia Drive; $30-$40; orlbeerweek.com.

Science Night Live: Otronicon Edition Orlando Science Center always kicks off the year with Otronicon, a weekend devoted to emerging technologies from virtual reality to robotic surgeons. The abundance of kids around during daytime hours means adults rarely get as much time to play with the tech as they’d like, though. That’s where Science Night Live, OSC’s regular adults-only night, comes in. Grab drinks and hors d’oeuvres and get up close with the future while only having to worry about fellow adults getting in your way. 8 p.m. Saturday; Orlando Science Center, 777 E. Princeton St.; $16; osc.org.

Mark Normand CO M E DY

Comedian Mark Normand’s career seems to be on the verge of breaking out. The New Orleans native cohosts the popular weekly “Tuesdays With Stories” podcast with fellow comedian Joe List, and has performed on pretty much every late-night talk show. He’s received accolades from fellow comedians like Jerry Seinfeld, who referred to Normand as “the best young up-and-coming comic” late last year. Normand returns to Orlando this week for an intimate show at Soundbar, supported by locals like Shaw Smith and Big Tim Murphy; see him now before he gets a Netflix special. – Thaddeus McCollum 8 p.m. | Soundbar, 37 W. B Y DA N S AVAG E

I’m a 26-year-old bisexual woman with a history of self-harm. It hasn’t been much of an issue for the last few years, but my sex life has improved a lot in that time. I realized that I am quite submissive and masochistic, and I have found a wonderful Dominant partner who I’ve gotten to explore that kink with in a positive and healthy way. Last night, I watched the movie Secretary, and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s character is someone who selfharms but stops when she begins a Dom/sub relationship with her boss. Obviously this film is flawed and not exactly a great guideline for healthy BDSM relationships. (The power dynamic! The lack of consent! That weird come scene!) However, I did find myself relating to her character and am now questioning my motives for pursuing this kind of sexual relationship. I worry that I may be unintentionally using the pain that I lovingly experience from my partner as a replacement for the pain I used to experience from my bad habits. Or am I using BDSM as a form of harm reduction? Is it rational to even compare these two things? Seeking Careful Advice Regarding Recent Emotional Discovery “I completely get where SCARRED is coming from,” says Lina Dune, the creator of Ask a Sub (askasub.com). “You’re discovering your kinks, and then the culture comes in with a not-entirely-accurate film or hot take, and it can taint your self-discovery.” Dune is known as a “fairy submother” to her thousands of followers on Instagram, where she regularly posts about the D/s lifestyle and frequently highlights red flags that newbies to the kink scene may miss. (A Dom who insists he “doesn’t negotiate” with subs? Run away.) While still relatively young herself, Dune has been active in the kink scene for many years and identifies as a 24/7 lifestyle sub. “There’s a difference between self-harm and what SCARRED is doing with her Dom in a consensual, rational, measured environment with safe words in place,” says Dune. “And it’s telling that she didn’t write in to say, ‘Oh my god, I’m using D/s to self-harm!’ Rather, she’s worried she might be unintentionally or unknowingly engaging in some form of self-harm.” While the fictional character played by Maggie Gyllenhaal stops engaging in acts of self-harm after entering into a D/s relationship with the fictional character played by James Spader, SCARRED, you don’t want to overinterpret that fictional narrative. Meaning, while the film suggested there was causal relationship between Gyllenhaal’s character entering into a D/s relationship and no longer engaging in acts of self-harm, that doesn’t mean the same is true for you. “The culture infantilizes us all when it 40

comes to owning our sexual desires – and that’s especially the case for women,” Dune says. “The message is: ‘You don’t know what you’re getting into’ or ‘You don’t realize the effect this is having.’ But if there’s one thing SCARRED is an expert on, it’s herself. It’s not like she’s in a trance when she’s with her Dom – no matter what the movies want us to believe about D/s relationships – which means she’s consciously choosing this for herself, and it feels healthy and good. Our bodies don’t usually lie. And I’d be willing to bet that self-harm did not feel that way.” But even if it turns out you’re right – even if, worst-case scenario, joyful consensual kink in the context of an intimate connection with another person is somehow a replacement for solo acts of self-harm that isolated you – it could still be a good thing. Dune suggests that you explore your feelings with a kink-positive therapist, and I want to second that. “From my perspective, it looks like SCARRED may have been manufacturing her own version of exposure therapy, which some somatic-based psychologists have suggested is exactly what negotiated, consent-based kink play can provide,” Dune says. “For example, a person with a fear of being powerless may find it helpful to experiment with powerlessness in small, controlled doses in the context of a structured, negotiated BDSM situation. Looking a fear in the eye and then being able to back away from it at will and end with a cuddle and a check-in with your play partner can make you feel more powerful, not less. So if SCARRED can consciously work through this with a therapist and her Dom, this BDSM relationship has the potential to be very healing, just as long as she maintains her autonomy within it.” I’m a 26-year-old straight man, and I haven’t gotten laid in a while. I never actually got much to begin with. I lost my virginity late (age 23, also my first kiss) and had bottled up quite a bit of frustration until then (still got a lot of that left over). I also suffer from crippling social anxiety – so crippling, in fact, that I can’t even get to know people online, which rules out online dating. I have recently come to the realization that the only way for me to ever get better is to stop wanting to get laid so much. Which. Is. Hard. The first step is learning to be OK with things as they are, which I am making progress with. But sex is everywhere: TV, movies, magazines. On the few occasions I do get to spend time with people, sex comes up a lot. People seriously complain to me about not having “gotten any” for two months, and that’s not enough for them. I’ve heard people describe themselves as “late bloomers” because they had their first time at 17 or 19. I feel like such a freak. I have a male roommate who fre-

quently has women over. I hear them going at it through the wall and get panic attacks because of it. I need some advice on how to be OK with not getting any, not really having gotten much to begin with, and just generally being nervous and inexperienced and self-conscious and lonely. I know that’s a lot, but perhaps you have some valuable thoughts for me. After-School Special Since there’s no way to strip the sex scenes and sexual references from every TV show you watch, magazine you read or conversation you have, ASS, working on yourself is going to be a far better use of your time than demanding a remade/desexed world. And by “working on yourself,” of course I mean “getting your ass into therapy.” Whether or not you ever get laid again, getting professional help to address your frustrations and social anxiety is going to improve your life. (It will also up the chances that you’ll get laid again, ASS, but no promises.) And take heart: For every letter like yours I get from a straight guy, ASS, I get an identical letter from a straight woman. Which means there are a lot of women out there who are just as inexperienced, self-conscious and lonely. Once you’re in good working order – not perfect, just functional – you might be able to connect with one of those women or some other woman. (But no one wants to connect with a guy who gives off a ragey vibe, so please stay away from incel forums.) And your inexperience makes you less freakish these days than you seem to realize. While 54 percent of high-school students had had sex by age 18 in 1991, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, today only 41 percent of highschool students have had sex by age 18. Which means there are a lot of “late bloomers” out there, ASS. And while you’ve doubtless heard that confidence is attractive, you most likely haven’t been told that a person doesn’t have to be experienced to be confident. A guy just has to be comfortable enough in his own skin to be open about who he is, where he’s at and what he’s looking for. But first things first: Get yourself a good therapist … and maybe a pair of noise-canceling headphones. Bumpy (A395292) is a 3-year-old neutered male who was brought to our shelter as a stray and he needs your help to find his forever home. Bumpy has tested positive for heartworm disease; however, his treatment is sponsored. He has been neutered, microchipped, vaccinated and is ready to go home the same day he is adopted! Bump was recently featured on a local news station, where he showed off his great obedience skills which are “sit,” “lay down” and “give paw”! For the month of January we are celebrating our “New You, New Pet” adoption promotion. Adoption fees for cats and dogs will be $20. The fees include sterilization, vaccinations and a microchip. Orange County Animal Services is located at 2769 Conroy Road in Orlando, near the Mall at Millenia. The shelter is open 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
