Ahead of 2020 election, DeSantis asks court to prevent many felons from voting: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis asked an appeals

court last week to continue preventing felons from voting while the state appeals a federal judge’s finding that a law requiring indigent felons to pay “legal financial obligations” to be eligible to vote is unconstitutional. A three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a U.S. District judge’s ruling that the state cannot deny the right to vote to felons who are “genuinely unable to pay” courtordered financial obligations, such as fees, fines and restitution. DeSantis wants the full appeals court to review the case. In a brief, his lawyers wrote that “a majority of the active judges on this court will likely agree to hear” and overturn the threejudge panel.

Florida’s parental-consent abortion bill heads to likely signature by DeSantis: Minors who seek abortions would be required to

obtain parental consent or convince judges to waive the requirement under a bill that received final legislative approval and has the support of Gov. Ron DeSantis. The House voted 75-43 in favor of the bill and then the Senate voted 23-17 to pass the bill (SB 404) on Feb. 6. Laura Goodhue, Planned Parenthood of Florida PAC campaign manager, issued a statement following the vote accusing Republicans of playing politics in an election year and vowing to mobilize what she called an “unprecedented campaign to register, educate and turn out Floridians who will vote to hold these politicians accountable.”

Orlando’s state attorney and public defender partner with Morgan firm to start bail fund for poor people: As a way to

help poor people who have committed nonviolent offenses pay bail, the offices of Orange-Osceola State Attorney Aramis Ayala and 9th Judicial Circuit Public Defender Bob Wesley announced last week the creation of the Community Bail Fund, in partnership with the Morgan & Morgan law firm. The firm said it would match the first $250,000 raised for the fund. “The cash bail system has created a structure where people of means are treated fairly and [the] poor are unduly penalized for their circumstances,” said Ayala.

Seminole County alligator sinks inflatable kayak, stranding two boaters: Two kayakers on the Econlockhatchee River had their inflatable

kayak sunk by an alligator last week, stranding them on the river bank until they were rescued by the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office. The kayakers told deputies the inflatable kayak hit something and began to deflate. Rescue crews arrived by helicopter to find and retrieve the kayakers along the Econ River, which, at 55 miles long, is the longest in Florida. Seminole County Sheriff’s Office also warns anyone who spends time on the river to beware of alligators.

Flu is a bigger worry for Florida than coronavirus: The flu

remains a far deadlier illness to worry about in Florida than the coronavirus, state lawmakers were told last week. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had received reports of more than 31 million cases of influenza or influenza-type illnesses nationally between October and the first two weeks of February, Tampa General Hospital physician and University of South Florida faculty member John Sinnott told members of the Senate Health Policy Committee. More than 350,000 people have been hospitalized and there have been more than 25,000 deaths. Meanwhile, the coronavirus, or COVID-19, was first reported in Wuhan, China on Dec. 31. The World Health Organization reported 73,424 cases of the virus and 1,873 deaths as of last week. orlandoweekly.com

THE BLOOM AND THE BERN Two theories of how to beat Donald Trump BY JEFFREY C. BILL M A N

here are many, many things wrong with Michael Bloomberg’s billiondollar vanity exercise. But there is one thing he gets right, and it’s also the thing that gives me pause about Bernie Sanders’s increasingly likely nomination. The issue isn’t ideology. On that score, I’m mostly in Bernie’s camp. I believe in universal health care and a Green New Deal. I think ICE should be abolished, private prisons should be banned, wealth should be taxed, carbon emissions should be taxed, coal plants should be shut down, public schools should be better funded, public housing should be much better funded, public universities should be free, the arts should be publicly supported, childcare should be publicly supported and military adventurism should be vastly curtailed. But I also think Donald Trump poses a singular threat to our institutions, and that if he wins, we’ll spend four more years sliding toward authoritarianism. Priority one is defeating him. Bloomberg’s campaign isn’t premised on ideas. The whole thing – the hundreds of millions of dollars he’s spent, the billions more he says he’ll spend – can be summed up in one sentence: Trump is bad, and I can beat him. Let’s make one thing emphatically clear: Mike Bloomberg is the absolute wrong person to deliver this message. Bloomberg’s history of racist, sexist, transphobic comments is disqualifying. Stop-and-frisk is disqualifying. Trying to literally buy an election is disqualifying. Having the plutocratic hubris to first suggest that other candidates drop out so he could go manoa-mano with Sanders, then showing up in Nevada after half-assing his debate prep, is disqualifying. (Watching Elizabeth Warren disembowel him was fun.) Bloomberg is a terrible candidate. Democrats would be nuts to nominate him. But that doesn’t mean we should ignore the one thing he accurately intuits: If the election is a referendum on Trump, Trump will lose. Unseating an incumbent is hard under the best circumstances; only once in the last hundred years has a party lost the White House after one term in power – in 1980, during a recession and the Iran hostage crisis. It’s even more difficult when the economy is growing. Any normal presi-

dent would be favored this year, when GDP is growing at about 2 percent, we’re adding about 200,000 jobs a month, and unemployment is under 4 percent. But Trump isn’t a normal president. He’s never had positive approval ratings. He probably never will. Democrats scored massive wins in 2018 because voters disliked him. Hillary Clinton was on track to wipe Trump out when the campaign was focused on him – until James Comey refocused it on her email scandal just before the election. Democrats are ahead in generic polls, and most major Dem candidates consistently poll several points ahead of the president.

Bloomberg’s theory, then, is to simply let Trump beat himself. For all of his braggadocio, Trump understands this. He doesn’t want a referendum. He wants an enemy. Any Democrat will be attacked, called a commie, a baby killer, the Antichrist; perhaps Trump’s totally independent Department of Justice will launch an investigation into some family member. But Sanders is leading a self-described political revolution. He also has a long, problematic history of praising aspects of repressive regimes, including the Soviets and the Sandinistas. (Just this weekend, on 60 Minutes, he threw in some nice words for Fidel Castro’s literacy program.) An election that could be a referendum on Trump will instead become a referendum on Bernie Sanders and on (democratic) socialism and his revolution. That’s what Trump wants. Maybe it’s what Bernie wants, too – sweeping reforms shouldn’t be secondary players in an election. It is not what Democratic Party leaders – or Dems in vulnerable congressional districts – want. I normally don’t empathize with establishment pearl-clutching. For decades, the party has been terrified of its own shadow, even as radicalizing Republicans redefined the political center. But I do worry that Sanders is the wrong person running the right campaign at the wrong moment. The thing about revolutions – or major

legislation – is that they usually follow disasters. The 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments followed the Civil War. The New Deal came amid the Great Depression. The Civil Rights Act followed JFK’s assassination. Even the Affordable Care Act followed a global economic collapse. The economy isn’t nearly as great as Trump claims, and perhaps it will crash in the next eight months, but right now, we’re not there. That’s not to say Sanders is unelectable, or that Democrats vying for the so-called moderate lane would be more electable. Sanders can inspire and mobilize in a way that Joe Biden and Mike Bloomberg never will. But I would argue that a campaign focused more on prosecuting Trump’s malice, incompetence and corruption than on selling a massive overhaul of the U.S. economy – while attempting to explain the differences between communism, socialism and democratic socialism – is more apt to succeed. Peter Hamby made a compelling argument for Vanity Fair last month that my concerns are misplaced: “What if Sanders is actually the MOST electable Democrat? In the age of Trump, hyper-partisanship, institutional distrust and social media, Sanders could be examined as a candidate almost custom-built to go head-to-head with Trump this year.” Sanders, Hamby continued, has five things going for him: celebrity, media savvy, a clear message, a fundraising machine and an army behind him. That last thing is the most essential. Bernie’s theory is that he’s going to rewrite the playbook, that his movement will inspire young and previously disenfranchised voters to turn out in record numbers, while his economic populism will peel away segments of the Trump coalition. In a close election, which forecasts suggest this will be, a surge of new, unlikely voters could put Sanders over the top – if they’re in the right states, and if they’re not offset by otherwise-Trump-wary suburbanites scared off by the S-word. This is the high-stakes gamble Bernie is making. It’s a bet Trump appears eager to take. The National Book Foundation seeks to diversify the literary conversation in America BY REBECCA RENNER

he literary world can often feel insular, but Lisa Lucas, executive director of the National Book Foundation, is trying to change that. In this year’s final week of Rollins College’s Winter With the Writers series, Lucas will speak about the National Book Foundation’s work, the role of literature in our lives, the need for diversity in literature and much more. “It’s always interesting to use the National Book Awards as a lens through which we can understand what’s happening in publishing and with books,” says Lucas. “Given that so much of it seems like it’s centered in New York City, I think sometimes we’re speaking to ourselves in a way.” For Lucas, opportunities outside the New York publishing bubble, like Winter With the Writers, are especially valuable. Her top goal is to build a nation of readers. To do that, she needs to talk to those readers, to ask them what is missing

from the literary world. Who’s excluded from literature? “I’ve always maintained that, of course, we need diverse voices,” says Lucas. “Obviously, we’re not necessarily publishing enough diverse voices, [or getting] recognition for those voices. When I say diverse, I’m not just talking about people of color, LGBTQ people – all different kinds of voices. But I think that who we are, who literature is, remains very uniform.” The National Book Foundation is diversifying the literary conversation by partnering with community institutions like libraries, book festivals, universities, community colleges and public housing authorities. “The thing I’m proudest of that didn’t exist four years ago that exists now is that we’ve given 1.3 million books to public housing authorities around the country,” says Lucas. “Where do you

start building a reader? In childhood.” Kids need opportunities for “owning books and feeling like books are fun and feeling like they’re valuable.” Lucas will speak about literature in America at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Galloway Room of Rollins College’s newly renovated Kathleen W. Rollins Hall. The next day, Winter With the Writers welcomes two National Book Award finalists, Kali Fajardo-Anstine and Ilya Kaminsky, its final readers of the season. Fajardo-Anstine, author of Sabrina & Corina, gives a fiction master class at 2 p.m. Thursday. Kaminsky is the author of Deaf Republic, a finalist for the NBA for Poetry in 2019. His poetry master class at 4 p.m. Thursday, titled “Correspondences in the Air: How poets speak to, learn from, and steal from other poets,” discusses how poets draw their influences from their contemporaries as well as poets throughout history. Finally, Kaminsky and Fajardo-Anstine will give a joint reading Thursday evening in Bush Auditorium. Ginger Minj’s new “TV Land Live!” series will affectionately satirize six classic shows, starting with groundbreaking blue-collar sitcom “Roseanne” With NBC’s The Good Place

recently concluding its run and vintage reruns predating 1990 nearly nonexistent on Nick at Nite, it seems like the glory days of the traditional television situation comedy are long gone. Well, RuPaul’s Drag Race breakout star Ginger Minj (known locally as the alter ego of Orlando actor Joshua Allan Eads) has spent the last couple of years featuring in a hit Netflix film and touring around the world, but now she’s come home to tackle a challenge even tougher than lip-syncing for her life: resurrecting the classic American sitcom on stage, starting with one of the most controversial stars of all time. The origins of Ginger Minj’s new TV Land Live! series, which launches this Thursday, Feb. 27, at the Parliament House’s Footlight Theatre, lie in a “drunken taco Tuesday” early last year, when Minj and Gidget Galore (aka co-producer and designer Richard Kuntz) cooked up a plan to parody their favorite Hulu indulgence, The Golden Girls. Their initial three-week run of The Golden Gals sold out, leading to extensions, encores and a Christmas musical. “It just turned into something that we saw potential in,” Minj explained to me last week during preparations for the production. “We were taking every penny that we made from the previous run each time and investing it into the show, to make it a little bit bigger and better than the last.” That urge to expand eventually led to this year’s slate of six different installments, which will affectionately satirize

shows from Gilligan’s Island and Bewitched to Designing Women and The Munsters. It all starts this weekend with Minj’s tribute to Roseanne, which Ginger calls “a million times funnier than anything that we’ve done so far.” In order to write the show, which is cheekily dubbed Rozeanne, Minj took five of the original series’ most iconic moments – as selected by an audience survey – and wove them into a script that is “wholly original, but has all of those elements that they know and love and are expecting.” While the plot pulls incidents from Seasons 1 through 9, Minj says the tone is “closer to the first couple seasons of Roseanne, when it was really truly about the core family.” Although the show is a parody, Minj insists, “We’re not laughing at them, we’re laughing with them. We’re celebrating the

foundations that they laid, and we’re trying to tell the story from a new, mostly queer perspective.” And as far as any worries about copyright infringement go, Minj was approached in Los Angeles by a producer of the current ABC reboot The Conners, who said the show’s stars were fans and thanked her for “keeping the legacy alive.” Entirely absent from Rozeanne, though, are the hot-button political issues that have made Roseanne Barr herself such a divisive figure. “There’s so much going on politically that we wanted everybody to be able to come and enjoy the show and forget about the bullshit for a minute, including ourselves,” says Minj. “I want to get back to the Roseanne that I grew up with, that I loved, that kind of raised me,” she adds, citing similarities between her modest orlandoweekly.com

upbringing and the show’s groundbreaking blue-collar setting. That sentiment is echoed by Minj’s special guest co-star, Daniel Franzese, who plays Roseanne’s husband, Dan. “While Roseanne the person is problematic, I’ve always been a fan of the show and the breakthrough stuff it has done for LGBTQ storylines and working-class storylines,” Franzese told me over the phone ahead of opening night. Best known for playing Damien in the film Mean Girls, Franzese befriended Minj after they met at a Drag Race viewing party, and the pair toyed with creating a YouTube series together impersonating the Conners. Even though Franzese is busy as an actor, writer and stand-up comic – he’s appearing May 27 at the Tampa Improv – he also makes a point of performing at gay bars like the Parliament House for discount rates, saying, “The higher I go up, the more I want to send the elevator back down.” Ironically, he’ll be performing in Orlando at the same time as Mean Girls: The Musical, which Franzese calls “its own thing, and that thing is fabulous,” joking that he thought he was going to explode into purple glitter while watching it on Broadway. Ginger Minj recently returned to Orlando following a five-week Los Angeles run in Women Behind Bars alongside cult icons Mink Stole and Traci Lords; that came on the heels of rehearsing for a new national tour of Xanadu that was postponed due to management issues a mere week before opening. And if you really do love adobo chicken, then get it here in burrito form ($8.95). Seasoned potatoes and stewed mung beans substantiate the hefty roll. There are other handhelds: a longaniza burger ($8.95) served on a Hawaiian bun will make a moaner out of you. The patty is fashioned from a house-made sweet pork sausage, topped with a grilled pineapple and garnished with a pickled papaya salad called atchara. Sweet and meaty indeed. Corn on a stick ($4.50) had many of the same trimmings as the sisig (garlic mayo, crushed chicharrones, pickled jalapeños, fresh calamansi) but the corn itself left much to be desired. I’d order this during the spring sweet corn season without hesitation. If Collantes offers kare kare ($11.95) as a special, get it. Oxtail and short rib loll in a luxuriant peanut stew that’s hearty without being thick. Diced eggplant, bok choy and long bean add to the dish’s sleepy picture of peasantry, which made it all the more amusing when a dab of shrimp paste startled my senses from their stupor, like smelling salts to an unconscious boxer. The funky flavor was ultimately neutralized by heaping spoonfuls of halo halo ($7), a dessert of jackfruit, red beans and coconut strips mixed with flan then avalanched with shaved ice and condensed milk. It’s an invigorating sleet of an ending which we weathered like champs and looked forward to sampling again because the forecast, we both agreed, called for repeated visits.

Drive is expanding. The restaurant will move into the adjacent space that most recently housed Jet’s Pizza and will increase capacity to 152 seats from its current 44. Chef-owner Henry Moso is shooting for an October completion date and anticipates construction will close the restaurant for two or three weeks … Sanford Brewing Co. has opened its outpost inside the Maitland City Centre … Mecato’s Bakery & Café has opened downtown at 20 N. Enzian Theater hasn’t given up on their expansion dreams

he Enzian Theater still wants a second screen. Maitland’s art-house theater surprisingly abandoned their ambitious “Enzian Forever” expansion in 2018 because of parking issues. However, the cinema is now seeking to add an additional screen by walling off the back of the existing auditorium, in addition to renovating its kitchen and restrooms. This change would technically be an improvement rather than an expansion because it would use most of the building’s existing structural “footprint.” It would also not boost indoor capacity beyond the allowable 250 (though the theater currently limits its attendance to about 220). The plan, therefore, would not require additional parking or an approval process on the scale of Enzian Forever. Indeed, the Maitland City Council has already given the go-ahead, on a 3-1 vote at a meeting on Feb. 10. That vote overturned a previous decision, on Dec. 18, that claimed the plans did not amount to a “minor change” and would require a lengthier approval process and public hearings. However, this doesn’t represent a final approval, according to Robert Sargent, Maitland’s public information officer. Instead, it means that no further involvement of the City Council or the Planning and Zoning Commission is required. The next step is a simple approval from city staff, contingent upon the construction plans meeting the scope of a “minor change.” That approval could happen in as little as a month, according to Sargent, though the Enzian has

provided no construction timetable. “Renovation plans have been approved as a minor change by Maitland’s City Council, and in light of this, Enzian staff will continue to work with city staff on the project moving forward,” says Janie Pope, Enzian’s director of development and public relations. The Enzian has not yet shared precisely how it intends to partition its existing theater and how it intends to achieve the ceiling height necessary for a second movie screen. Plans filed with the City of Maitland call for the following: 1. Increase of structure by 1,000 square feet to provide approximately 450 square feet for purposes of kitchen efficiency and to improve the men’s and women’s bathrooms. The exterior of the addition provides for no openings and is totally contained within the city’s setback area; 2. Separating 50 of the 250 permitted seats into a second “intimate” theater to allow for staggered starting times. Seat count is the same as presently permitted; 3. Addition of a weather canopy to protect public from inclement weather when standing in line; 4. Upgrading handicapped parking area to comply with current standards and adding one additional handicapped parking space; and 5. Moving interior stairwell to office from inside the existing structure to outside the existing structure.

The document also states, “The cumulative effect of these changes do not result in the reasonable likelihood of adverse impact to adjacent properties.” It’s unclear whether a 4K digital projector and 35mm reel-to-reel film projector are part of the project. That 35mm projector, which programmers have long wanted, would make it easier to secure film prints. It would also allow the Enzian to better compete with Alamo Drafthouse, which is expected to open a cinema later this year in south Orlando, on Daryl Carter Parkway, near Vineland Premium Outlets. That theater is expected to have a reel-to-reel 35mm projector, in addition to multiple 4K projectors. The Enzian currently has a 2K digital projector and a platter-system film projector, which is not as popular with studios as the reel-to-reel system. The Enzian has not said how much the project will cost or how it intends to pay for it, but the theater could use money left over from the $6.5 million Enzian Forever project. That plan called for a new lobby, restrooms, offices and two additional screens, so this new plan is likely to be significantly less expensive. But it’s not clear how much of that money remains. When Enzian Forever was canceled, the theater offered donors their money back upon request, but many chose to let Enzian keep the donations contingent upon the funds being used for future renovations, according to former Enzian executive director David Schillhammer. feedback@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

OPENING THIS WEEK: Emma Jane Austen is arguably more popular now than she’s ever been, so yet another adaptation of her story about a wealthy matchmaker seems like a no-brainer. I just wonder if there’s going to be some subconscious pushback to watching the well-to-do decide where the rest of us should be investing our deepest emotional desires. I mean, it doesn’t seem to be going that great for the Democratic National Committee, does it? (PG; opens Thursday at Regal Winter Park Village & RPX) The Invisible Man Universal’s plan for a “Dark Universe” of interconnected films based on its classic monsters fell apart after one disastrous Mummy update. So the Invisible Man that’s making it to theaters this week is instead a standalone thriller, with Elisabeth Moss playing a woman who’s victimized by her abusive and now-invisible ex. OK, so Moss knows a thing or two about rebelling against awful men, and the title character as imagined by H.G. Wells was never anyone’s idea of a delightful young chap. But still, this whole project reeks of desperate calculation. Guys, forget about movies and just concentrate on that Universal Monsters land you’re rumored to be opening at Epic Universe. All we want is Claude Rains the way he was meant to not be seen. (R) My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising It’s the second feature outing for the student body of anime’s favorite school for superheroes. What to expect? Well, The Guardian colorfully describes one of the villains as “an anthropo-

morphized wolf with an alligator tail in a trench coat smoking a fat stogie.” Personally, I wasn’t interested until they specified the stogie was fat. Coming home is the important part. We will never get rich and famous with that attitude. And that is just fine.” Rather than chasing fame and fortune, Nichols is just hoping to learn from his past and maybe enjoy his time onstage a little more than he did when he was younger. “I just watched the Ken Burns’ country music documentary. There was a story about Minnie Pearl being nervous before her first night at the Grand Ole Opry and the Solemn Old Judge told her something like, ‘Just love ’em, honey, and they’ll love you right back.’ I think I always viewed the audience as adversaries and I wish I would’ve been a little smarter about that.” Another smart move would be to catch Lucero’s triumphant Orlando return at the Social this week. music@orlandoweekly.com orlandoweekly.com

Shining yet another bright spotlight into the heavy rock netherworld, Orlando promoter Endoxa Booking just featured Plaque Marks from Philadelphia, the capital of heavy music it seems these days. Of all the bands in their collective résumé – a CV that also includes acts like Creepoid, Ecstatic Vision and the Powder Room – Plaque Marks mainline the most stylistic juice directly from the bulging veins of exhilarating thug rockers Fight Amp. And that is a very fucking good thing. Their attack is a heavy, hairy mongrel of noise rock and punk. It’s the kind of scuzz and sepsis that’s earned Plaque Marks a spot on the roster of Minneapolis label Learning Curve Records, in the good company of Amphetamine Reptilecertified legends like Hammerhead, Vaz, Gay Witch Abortion and Seawhores. In concert, they bash out their raging, tar-thick songs with all the requisite overdrive and bloodthirst, dredging noxious grooves like an even more polluted Pissed Jeans. But their stage show proves they’re more than mere blunt force trauma. Sharpening all that full-frontal nastiness and danger into a blade of gutter glory is a deadly efficient band of real skill and high-wire flair. Relative obscurity notwithstanding, Plaque Marks are looking like one of the most endowed and lockedin noise-rock bands in the game right now. Another fresh look on this bill was brand-new Tampa-Orlando band Wreath, whose classic hardcore ethic will thrill

fans of Minor Threat and the like. Clean, clarified and tough, it’s punk rock forged from the twin rigors of music and politics. Rounding out the night were local powerviolence group Throwin Up. Their dirty hardcore prowls the fringes with metal extremity, showing fangs of thrash and grind. Add in their singer’s crazed energy and guttural retching and you’ve got the soundtrack to a stampede going over a cliff.

BL_ANK AT THE IN-BETWEEN SERIES, FEB. 17

Downtown experimental music serial the In-Between Series just kicked off its 2020 season with one of its most intense chapters yet. Capitalizing on the touring migration bonanza caused by Miami’s annual International Noise Conference, the latest feature was Bl_ank. This audiovisual noise percussion act is the solo project of Baltimore artist William Hicks, a man who keeps collaborative company with cats from defining bands like the Flaming Lips and Deerhoof. Going in, this was the only edition of the In-Between Series out of the many I’ve attended that not only offered but actively

encouraged earplugs. A good omen if ever there were one – as was the full, standingroom gallery filled with the city’s noise freaks. From behind a rig of drums, knobs, pedals, laptop and video projector, Bl_ank immediately snapped everyone to attention and quickly went about distinguishing himself as experimental but not necessarily arcane. Unlike many free-improvisation percussionists, he doesn’t just ride a blur of chaos. Built into his rhythmic drives are open pockets for improvisation – where he proves as inventive as any free-jazz dynamo – but he is a master of control. Even when the pounding, popping percussive energy hits fever pitch, Hicks commands it like a seasoned jockey, channeling the force into discipline and purpose. Watching him bang out lock-tight breakbeats is to know what it’s like to see drum & bass executed live by an actual human. Although drumming is Bl_ank’s forwardmost charge, it’s woven into an integrated tapestry with electronics and visuals. The electronic sounds pulsed, pierced and rose to smother in monolithic sheets of harsh noise. Behind him, video clips – triggered to follow his sonic movements – flashed in constant motion. The cumulative effect is proof positive that wild unpredictability and high-impact clarity need not be mutually exclusive. Word to that, and to earplugs. As often happens after an In-Between Series show, there was an audience Q&A. Like the performance itself, the Q&A was illuminating, yielding the revelation that the video aspect of the Bl_ank experience was urged by none other than Wayne Coyne. Comedian, actor and writer Patton Oswalt is steering his I Love Everything Tour to the City Beautiful this weekend. Oswalt’s appearances in film and television continuously surprise, whether as sidekick Spencer in the familyfriendly sitcom The King of Queens, Remy in hit kids’ film Ratatouille or Paul Aufiero in the decidedly darker Big Fan. His comedy is scathing, self-deprecating and delightfully nerdy, with riffs on religious carol “The Christmas Shoes” and George Lucas pitching the Star Wars prequels being consistent YouTube gold. His life was upended tragically in 2016 when wife Michelle McNamara died very suddenly and unexpectedly, leaving Oswalt to try and pick up the pieces of his life and carry on. The Annihilation comedy special that followed a year later was comeback as therapy, heartbreaking and hilarious in equal measures. You’d be well advised to make it out to this Saturday gig to see the next chapter in a decidedly unique story. – MM

This Turnbuckle Tuesday show has a somewhat bittersweet tinge to it (or maybe celebratory; depends on where you land on the optimist/pessimist spectrum). Headliner the Archeas, from Louisville, Kentucky, just released “Rock N Roll,” the penultimate platter of the long-running 7-inch single series on Orlando’s Total Punk Records. Now, this doesn’t mean the end of Total Punk at all, just the end of their signature home-brewed, hand-stamped vinyl singles that explored the outer, weirder fringes of punk. Archaeas are a great note to (almost) go out on – blown-out, dirty art-punk that should be a riot live. For Freedoms Town Hall: Rebranding Patriotism CIVICS

In his 1941 State of the Union address, President Franklin D. Roosevelt laid out a goal for the United States, to shake off isolationism and seek to build “a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.” The four freedoms Roosevelt articulated: freedom from fear, freedom from want, freedom of worship and freedom of speech. Norman Rockwell painted his own interpretations of those four freedoms, but – like so many well-intentioned relics of another era – those paintings center whiteness, Christianity and men. This town hall discussion springboards off Hank Willis Thomas and Emily Shur’s For Freedoms series, photographic updates of the Rockwell images remade for a new era currently on display at Rollins’ Cornell Fine Arts Museum. Artists, professors and students will share their insights on what patriotism is in the 21st century and its effects as felt in everyday life. As we approach our next presidential election, we can’t say that we’ve achieved those four freedoms for every American, much less everywhere in the world. I’m a 31-year-old cis bisexual woman. I’m hetero-romantic and in a monogamish relationship with a man. We play with other people together.
